WWW.PRIDE.COM'Smile 2' star Naomi Scott brings a pop star's nightmare to wicked, gruesome, jaw-dropping lifeMoving through the world as a visibly queer person can be equal parts thrilling and terrifying. Eyes follow you, those who love and support you delight in and connect with you, and those who dont? Well, theres a palpably heavy weight to those gazes as well. In that moment, youre both highly visible and utterly unseen. That dichotomy of exhilaration and unease, of power and vulnerability, of accolade and isolation is at the very crux of Smile 2. A sequel to the surprise hit of 2022, it manages to up the ante of terror, gore, and emotional depth over its already pretty chilling predecessor. After a short and gloriously shocking opening sequence, Smile 2 moves the action from the domain of mental health into the glittering high-pressure world of pop superstardom. Skye Riley, played by Naomi Scott in what may become a career-defining performance, is a pop star on the precipice of her big comeback following a tragic accident thats left her rehabbing ongoing injuries and her boyfriend Paul (Ray Nicholson) dead. But her problems only metastasize when she witnesses the suicide of her drug dealer Lewis (Lukas Gage) passing on a demonic, mind-twisting presence to the troubled pop star. On paper, the film is high concept, but in both writing and performance, its actually grounded and frighteningly relatable. Again returning to that concept of being both in the spotlight and yet invisible, its a feeling both queer individuals and pop stars know all too well and it resonated for Scott, too. [Skyes] going through something, and things that I think people can relate to, to an extent, but in a very unrelatable context. And so theres both simultaneously this connection that you have with Skye and this distance youre observing, but youre also really with her, she tells PRIDE. That connection to Skyes vulnerability, Scotts ability to wring every ounce of pathos from every moment, and filmmaker Parker Finns choice to make her emotional turmoil the lynchpin of the film, often filming her seemingly within inches of the actresss face, pulls the viewer in, making them equal parts "in it" with Skye and complicit in observing her psychological spiral.Feeling yourself pulled into the film, seeing your own anxieties, fears, and life experiences represented on screen through the lens and metaphor is exactly what returning writer and director Finn was after with Smile 2. When pressed on how he wants audiences to interpret the demon, hes quick to push back. I love being able to create something where audiences can project upon it. I think that thats always really important to me. I never want to overly put my thumb on the scale for anything, he tells PRIDE. I am always trying to explore things that are on my mind that Im interested in, and I feel like I was trying to make myself the first audience member for it, but to create something that is relatable and hopefully universal for people to feel that. The world that Skye exists in is also innately queer. In casting, we see in the inclusion of the aforementioned Gage and out actor Miles Gutierrez-Riley (Agatha All Along) who stars as Skyes mothers gay assistant Joshua. But also there is essential queerness to all of the close relationships in her life, the Mommy Dearest flavored dynamic with her momager (Rosemarie DeWitt) or the intimacy of her friendship with Gemma (Dylan Gelula). While entirely unremarked on textually the film creates a queer tapestry as its backdrop.Watch PRIDE's full interview with Smile 2 director Parker Finn below. While Smile 2 is sure to be a crowd-pleaser, the creeping sense of dread, funhouse-like jump-scares, and gleefully nasty plot twists and turns are exactly the experiences you crave in the fall. But, like the best of the horror genre, theres no shortage of deeper commentary happening under its hood. It serves as a mirror and a viewport into our cultural and personal anxieties. Theres a veritable kaleidoscope of ways to interpret the meaning of the demon, whether thats trauma, guilt, or even internalized homophobia, and Finn is all too happy for people to bring their own experiences and exegesis to the film. My favorite horror films [are] the ones that linger with me. I love things that go bump in the night, obviously. But its that internal, human psychological element, that feeling of exploring something thats uncomfortable, uneasy, something we might all be feeling, but putting it through the lens of genre allows you to sort of look at it from a different angle, and engage with it in a different way, says Finn. If there was ever a moment for the catharsis of watching horror and experiencing fear in a contained and safe way its now. The world feels like a particularly frightening and unsafe place and the countdown clock to the most consequential and for many people, in particular queer and trans persons, existential election of our time. The general sense of anxiety and unease is at an all-time high. Add to that the fact that spooky season is in full swing, it truly couldnt be a better time for Smile 2 to grace the big screen and wriggle its way into our psyches. It also helps that we are, as Finn says, in a renaissance of horror with thoughtful, transgressive films dominating the genre. I love how so much horror right now is being thoughtfully made, and films that have something on their mind, I think is really important, he says. I think that we can have cultural conversations, that horror gives us a way in that maybe wasnt so obvious before that, and it allows you to take something that could be very heady or hard to talk about and create this like really exciting experience that has catharsis. And I think that catharsis is so important to me, both as a viewer and a filmmaker. There is something profoundly cathartic about witnessing Scotts raw and unhinged performance in Smile 2. I would put this performance in the same category as Toni Collettes in Hereditary or Demi Moores in this years body horror shocker The Substance. It is that unleashed. It was that commitment to character that drew Scott to the role in the first place that and being a fan of Finns previous work. I watched the short film in 2020 and was a fan of that, Laura Hasnt Slept. I watched [Smile] in the cinema, was a fan of that movie, and felt like Parker is a filmmaker who really prioritizes character, she recalls As an actor, thats very exciting, because the character isnt just used as a device to push the plot forward. The movie is the character and thats what makes him a great filmmaker. The two met prior to production to discuss the film and Skyes journey. Scott was eager to take on the challenge of the physicality of the role, but also her psychological complexity. I was like, Wait a second, this sounds so up my alley. I need to do this movie. And then, of course, reading it and feeling like, yes, this really does deliver on the promise of it being a character piece, and just falling in love with Skye and all the things that shes going through, she says. It really runs the gamut of her being kind of numb at the beginning of the movie with a lot of going on under the surface, and then obviously that just begins to really peel away and reveal whats really there. There is so very much to peel away metaphorically and viscerally. Theres an alchemy to bringing that to life on screen, a dynamic between actor and director, and Finn shares why Scott was the perfect partner in making the film. It all starts with casting the right person in the role. Naomi is this absolute force of nature. For this role in particular, she has this incredible gravitas, where I believe her as this mega pop star, but then you turn around in the next moment, shes breaking down. Hitting rock bottom is so vulnerable, so human, so raw. The fact that she can do both while also singing while also doing choreography is incredible, he gushes. The way I like to work with my leads is to be partners in crime. Were doing this together, its all about this curation and making sure that we are on this journey together. And thats what made Naomi such a wonderful partner in this, is that we really felt locked in together.Still, watching Skye break down both mentally and physically, its hard not to wonder how the actor behind the performance was faring. Thankfully, Scott shook it off like a glittery tassel coat. The honest answer is, it doesnt touch me. Im very protective of myself and of the performance aspect, she says, although she admits there were certainly moments of exhaustion on set. I did have amazing support around me and people around me, and I left it there. Then just watched Love is Blind and I was fine, she jokes. While the actress thankfully walked away unscathed, audiences are in for a rattling and terrifying experience when Smile 2 hits theaters this Friday, October 18 one we cant recommend highly enough0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 51 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.PRIDE.COMFar-right hater Laura Loomer attacks Buttigieg family in homophobic tiradeExtremist and high-profile Donald Trump supporter considered too racist by some of the MAGA movements most fervent members, Laura Loomer, launched a deeply homophobic tirade attacking U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten, falsely claiming they are abusive for raising children as a same-sex couple.Loomer, a far-right provocateur with a history of incendiary remarks and peddling of conspiracy theories, targeted the Buttigieg family in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) starting on Wednesday, calling the couples parenting psychological abuse. Loomers attack comes as she continues to align herself with former President Donald Trumps 2024 campaign. The controversy erupted after Pete Buttigieg, the nations first out gay Senate-confirmed Cabinet member, posted a sarcastic message from his personal X account responding to Trumps claim that he is the father of IVF during an all-womens town hall hosted by Fox News host Harris Faulkner in Georgia on Tuesday, which aired Wednesday. In September, Trump, during the only presidential debate of the election, declared himself a leader on fertilization.Vice President Kamala Harris responded to Trumps latest claim on X.Donald Trump called himself the father of IVF. What is he talking about? His abortion bans have already jeopardized access to it in states across the countryand his own platform could end IVF altogether, Harris wrote. Also mocking Trumps statement, Buttigieg posted, Im the father of IVF getting banned in Alabama, highlighting the contradiction between Trumps claim and the reality of anti-abortion laws in GOP-led states that have also impacted fertility treatments.Loomer responded with a vitriolic attack on the Buttigiegs. She falsely suggested that the couple, who adopted their two children in 2021, used a surrogate and accused them of harming their children. You incubated a baby in a biological womans womb and pretended to breastfeed with plastic nipples in a hospital bed like a psychopath, Loomer wrote. Homosexual men cannot give birth. Gay men cant get pregnant or make breast milk. You arent even a real father. Donald Trump is.Chasten Buttigieg, a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, initially responded on X, calling out Loomers hate-filled rhetoric and Trumps connection to her. Is this who we want in the White House influencing policy on childcare or education? Sitting in the Oval Office pushing Project 2025? he wrote, referencing a conservative agenda aimed at reshaping federal policies and rolling back LGBTQ+ rights. Let them keep doubling down on this type of weird bigotry while we focus on knocking on doors, making calls, and bringing people together. #KamalaHarris is for the people. MAGA is for whatever this is. (@) Loomer doubled down in response, claiming the Buttigiegs psychologically abuse their children by raising them in a same-sex household. I know what we dont need or want in the White House. Men like you who think its ok to psychologically abuse children by depriving them of maternal touch when they are babies, she wrote. She then went on a weird tangent about breastfeeding.Someone should call CPS on you for mimicking a child sucking on your nipple when you arent even a biological woman, Loomer wrote. An AI-generated image of Pete Buttigieg breastfeeding that Loomer referenced has been debunked and flagged as false multiple times on social media, and the Buttigieg familys adoption journey has been widely covered. Yet Loomer continued to spread falsehoods, suggesting that Child Protective Services should intervene.LGBTQ+ families like the Buttigiegs face unique challenges, but they are a growing and significant part of American society. According to the Williams Institute at UCLAs School of Law, between 2 million and 3.7 million children in the U.S. are being raised by LGBTQ+ parents. About 191,000 children are being raised by same-sex couples, and 29 percent of LGBTQ+ adults are raising a child under 18. LGBTQ+ couples are also seven times more likely to foster or adopt children than their heterosexual counterparts, according to Family Equality.Chasten Buttigieg told The Advocate that the focus should remain on the upcoming election and the high stakes for LGBTQ+ families. With less than three weeks to go until the election, it is clear that for Trumps closest allies the plan is distraction and division while Democrats are laser focused on solutions and action. The American people dont need conspiracy theorists or Project 2025 anywhere near the White House, he said. I hope folks will keep knocking on doors and having conversations with the people in their lives about the very high stakes of this election.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 51 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.PRIDE.COMTerrible Texas AG Ken Paxton sues doc for providing transition care to youthTexas Attorney General Ken Paxton, known for his anti-LGBTQ+ views, has sued a doctor in the state for providing gender-affirming care to young people, the first such suit in the nation.Paxton filed the suit Thursday in Collin County District Court against May C. Lau, MD, who works at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He alleges that Lau violated Texass law against gender-affirming care to transgender minors by providing cross-sex hormones to at least 21 young people for the purpose of gender transition. He also claims she violated the states business and commercial code by engaging in false, misleading, and deceptive acts and practices to mislead pharmacies, insurance providers, and/or patients by falsifying medical records, prescriptions, and billing records to represent that her testosterone prescriptions are for something other than transitioning a childs biological sex or affirming a childs belief that their gender identity is inconsistent with their biological sex, as the suit puts it.Growing scientific evidence strongly suggests that gender transition interventions prescribed to or performed on children in an attempt to anatomically or hormonally alter their biological sex characteristics have damaging, long-term consequences, says a press release from Paxtons office. Additionally, the prohibited treatments are experimental, and no scientific evidence supports their supposed benefits. This is not true. Such treatments are not considered experimental, and they have been shown to have positive and even lifesaving effects on youth people. This care is supported by every major medical group in the U.S.Texas passed a law to protect children from these dangerous unscientific medical interventions that have irreversible and damaging effects, Paxton said in the release. Doctors who continue to provide these harmful gender transition drugs and treatments will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.Story developing0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 54 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTexas sues doctor for providing gender-affirming care in first of its kind lawsuitTexas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) has filed the first-of-its-kind lawsuit against a medical provider for allegedly providing gender-affirming care to minors in violation of S.B. 14, the states ban on such care for minors.Paxton filed a lawsuit against Dr. May C. Lau, a medical provider at Chidrens Hospital in Dallas, for allegedly prescribing hormone replacement therapy to at least 21 minors between October 2023 and last August. Lau allegedly used false diagnoses and billing codes to mask these unlawful prescriptions, the lawsuit states. Lau may lose her medical license if the lawsuit succeeds. Related These 4 trans-related Supreme Court cases affect everyones future civil rights While the cases focus on drag bans and trans protections, they address larger issues of free speech and civil rights. Paxtons lawsuit falsely refers to gender-affirming care as dangerous and experimental medical procedures. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The medications used in such care have been used safely in children for decades for the purposes of gender transition and to treat other medical issues in cisgender children. In fact, Texas law stands in opposition to the best care practices for treating gender dysphoria recommended by every major American medical association. These associations agree that such care is safe, effective, and essential for the overall well-being of trans people.Although the Texas Supreme Court, whose judges are elected officials, upheld the states ban in an 8-1 ruling last June, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has opposed a similar ban passed in 2023 by the Tennessee legislature. The DOJs lawsuit will likely be argued this December or in January 2025 in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. The court will likely issue a ruling in June or early July 2025. The laws are inflicting profound harms on transgender adolescents and their families by denying medical treatments that the affected adolescents, their parents, their doctors, and medical experts have all concluded are appropriate and necessary to treat a serious medical condition, the DOJ wrote in court filings.Paxton has a long history of opposing gender-affirming care. In February 2022, he issued anon-binding opinioncalling gender-affirming health care a form of child abuse. Childrens Hospital in Dallas stopped providing gender-affirming care to trans youth that year in response.Soon after issuing his order, several employees with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS)quit, andsome state attorneys refusedto enforce his opinion by investigating families that provide gender-affirming care to their trans children. The Texas Supreme Court ruled that neither Abbott nor Paxton had the authority to issue the order. Several families with trans children also filed a lawsuit against Abbott. The presiding district judge in the lawsuit issued a temporary restraining order against any such DFPS investigations.Paxton also demanded out-of-state hospitals and PFLAG, an LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, turn over records related to the families of trans youth seeking gender-affirming care. Both groups successfully opposed Paxtons efforts.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 44 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTrump tried to silence Stormy Daniels with hush money agreement againFormer President and current Republican nominee Donald Trump reportedly tried to get adult film performer Stormy Daniels to sign a hush money agreement again, after he was already found guilty of charges connected to the first time he bought her silence. This week, out MSNBC host Rachel Maddow broke the story on All In with Chris Hayes. According to Maddow, Daniels lawyer provided her and her team with documents showing that, with the November election looming, Trumps lawyers offered to reduce the amount Daniels owed the former president in legal fees after she lost a defamation suit against him in 2020. In exchange, Trumps lawyers wanted Daniels to agree not to talk about the former president. Related Trump has spent over $19 million on anti-trans ads even though they turn off voters It turns out more voters care about these other issues Daniels, of course, was at the center of the criminal trial in which Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to payments Daniels received ahead of the 2016 election to cover up his alleged extramarital affair with the adult film actress. Subscribe to our Newsletter today In a separate case, Daniels sued the former president for defamation. The case was dismissed, and Daniels was ordered to pay upwards of $600,000 to cover Trumps legal fees.According to Maddow, Daniels was able to raise enough to cover what she owed Trump through a GoFundMe account. But during what Maddow described as standard negotiations over the precise amount she would pay, Daniels got a call she wasnt expecting. On Hayes show, Maddow threw to cellphone video, apparently taken by Daniels, of that call, in which a voice identified as Daniels lawyer, Clark Brewster, tells Daniels that they want to cut some kind of deal where they silence you. In the midst of this negotiation over paying off the last legal settlement between them, Trump is trying to get another hush money deal with Stormy Daniels ahead of this election, Maddow explained.Trumps lawyer basically offered to take it off the bottom line. They would pretend that Stormy Daniels owed less money to Trump than they actually believed she owed if she also signed an agreement to not talk about Trump, she continued. This time, they were apparently planning to launder the new hush money payment to Stormy Daniels through the payment of a legal judgment. In addition to the footage of the call, Daniels lawyer also provided Maddow and MSNBC with a July 25, 2024, email from Trumps lawyer, Harry J. Ross, in which Ross writes that while Trumps lawyers disagree that a payment of $620,000 would be in full satisfaction of the three judgements, they would agree to settle these matters for $620,000.00, provided that your client agrees in writing to make no public or private statements related to any alleged past interactions with President Trump or his suitability as a candidate for President. As Maddow noted, Trumps lawyers were essentially agreeing to take $30,000 less than they believed she owed if she agreed to sign another nondisclosure agreement similar to the one that led to Trumps criminal conviction. Both Daniels and her lawyers emphatically rejected the offer. According to Maddow, Daniels lawyer says they finally settled on a $627,500 payment, which she paid without signing another NDA.Maddow said that Trumps lawyer did not respond to questions about the matter but instead forwarded her questions to the Trump campaign. In a statement, Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung wrote, These purported documents were attained as part of an illegal, foreign hacking attack against President Trump and his team. Maddow reiterated that MSNBC received the documents directly from Daniels lawyer. There was no hacking involved. We did not get them from any hack or the leaking of any hacked documents, she said. The bottom line here is, the Republican nominee for president, Donald Trump, is currently awaiting sentencing for crimes involving a secret hush money payment he made to [adult film] star Stormy Daniels just before the 2016 election to keep her from talking about him, and specifically about having sex with him, Maddow said. And now, just before the 2024 election, Trump has once again demanded that Stormy Daniels sign on to an agreement not to talk about him, offering to knock thousands of dollars off her bill if she did it.Maddow said that MSNBC contacted the New York district attorneys office, which prosecuted Trump in the initial hush-money case, and they declined to comment. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMYou, our readers, care a lot about reproductive freedomLast week, LGBTQ Nation asked you, our readers, what your biggest concern is when it comes to topics that are popping up on ballot initiatives across the country this year, and you all picked abortion rights. In 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the federal right to get an abortion and effectively forcing pregnant people in states that dont approve of abortion to carry fetuses to term even if they dont want to. The backlash against this decision has been enormous and became a major issue in the 2022 elections. Related You all believe Kamala Harris should focus more on direct appeals to anti-Trump Republicans We asked readers what Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz can do to win over more voters. Most of you think Republicans are the key. This year, measures related to abortion are on the ballot in 10 states. In nine of those states Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New York, and South Dakota the measures would, if passed, protect the right to an abortion. The tenth state Nebraska has two competing ballot initiatives related to abortion, one to protect it and another that would ban it.Over 44% of readers picked abortion rights in the poll. Voting rights was next at 22%, and the other three choices energy and the environment, education reform and funding, and minimum wage and sick leave all got fewer than 14% of the vote. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMScott Wiener never backs down from a fight. And we are better for it.It was the photo worth a thousand Tweets. Wearing a skinny black leather tie above tight black jeans, a smiling, shirtless Scott Wiener posed at San Franciscos infamous Folsom Street Fair. That should have been the end of the storyanother Sunday Funday in the sununtil Wiener, a popular California state senator from the Castro neighborhood, posted the image on X, eliciting howls from right-wing agitators led by the ultimate troll, Elon Musk, who just happens to own the social media site.Going all Senatorial at Folsom pic.twitter.com/fFjagP5c96 Senator Scott Wiener (@Scott_Wiener) September 29, 2024Wiener was accused of everything from perversion to grooming. Subscribe to our Newsletter today It was another slanderous, destructive thread that has become the norm on X, a cesspool of racists, antisemites, and, of course, their bedmates, homophobes. These agitators have dominated the site after Musk dismissed the content moderation team and restored dozens of white supremacist accounts, driving away pretty much everyone without an axe to grind. But the backlash was nothing new to Wiener, whose outspokenness has won him the endearment of his constituency and the rights undying hostility. In 2018, he became one of the first legislators to acknowledge that he was taking PrEP, the medication regimen that prevents HIV transmission. The reaction, even within some quarters of the gay community, was fierce. In 2022, his bill to provide refuge for trans kids and their families was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D). The bill protects trans young people and their families when fleeing states that criminalize parents for allowing gender-affirming care. There is no sacred cow he wont take on. In the past few years, hes led the charge to address Californias acute housing shortage, which has made cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles unaffordable for millions, including queer people who gravitate toward established gay neighborhoods. The shortage has exacerbated the homeless crisis and driven the middle class out of the state, looking for more affordable climes. Wiener has authored an astonishing 76 bills that have been signed into law to streamline the building approval process and to overcome local opposition to building new housing, which holds up new construction for years. At well over six feet, with ramrod posture, he cuts a dashing figure on his frequent outings in the Castro. Hes hardly a rabel rouser in personthoughtful, well-spoken, almost shy.Wiener is running for his third term in California State Senate District 11, a race he leads comfortably. Political observers believe he is gearing up to run for the Congressional seat in his district, now occupied by none other than Nancy Pelosi, who is expected to retire after her next two-year term, which might be after she becomes speaker of the House again next year.LGBTQ Nation caught up with Wiener by phone a few weeks before the election at his Castro District home as he prepared to celebrate Rosh Hashanah at his local synagogue. Haha. But did you enjoy the afternoon?Sen. Scott Wiener: Yeah, it was a good time. Most of us looked at the photo of the leather tie and thought Cool outfit. But then the attacks came, and a leather tie over a bare chest suddenly means something entirely else to the right wing, including Elon Musk, who recently moved X out of San Francisco. Suddenly you were everything from a douchebag to a groomer. Pursuing an X tread these days is like descending into hellor at least a sewer.Yeah, I mean, its gotten horrible. I got active in the community in 1990 during a very, very tough time for the community: the mass die-off of gay men, a hostile federal government, and no civil rights protections. It was a very dark time for our community, and things improved. And over several decades, we were mainly moving in one direction. I never thought we would go back to those days. I never thought we would go back to the time when it was considered acceptable in public discourse to slander LGBTQ people as pedophiles, to a time when it is okay to suggest that we were somehow going to abduct kids or something. Related Kamala Harris from the Veil of Ignorance: How this election is a battle for liberalism itself John Rawls proposed examining policy through a veil of ignorance. LGBTQ Nation talked to an out Rawls scholar to learn more. We now have an entire political party basing its platform on the demonization of our community. Instead of acknowledging the truth, which is that some kids are gay or lesbian or trans and that theyre just going to be who they are. Instead, they demonize. They dont even call it trying to convert kids anymore. Now, they call it grooming, and what a sad state of affairs it is.But here we are, and we have to fight this by just leading our authentic lives. We must push back hard against this slanderous narrative. As you say, it has seemed a slow road to equality. Suddenly the road is blocked, or were even going backwards. To what do you attribute that?Theres a sickness in our body politic. Its the same sickness that gave us Donald Trump, QAnon, and MAGA. Its a sickness that has infused modern American politics with conspiracy theories, particularly on the right. It is threatening our democracy. Social media algorithms fuel it, and its very, very dangerous to LGBTQ people. It was an optimistic time when social media first sprung up, particularly Facebook and Twitter. You know, queer kids in rural Nebraska could connect and could find safety and acceptance. There were lots of good things happening. It contributed to marriage equality because it was easier for Americans to get to know us over social media, not just in person. Now, all that has changed. Social media is not purely destructive. Many good people connect with people, giving them access to much information and perspectives they would not otherwise hear. But there is also this dark side in terms of people going down bizarre rabbit holes and getting brainwashed. Social media allowed a broad swath of society to see LGBTQ people as human beings. It allowed LGBTQ young people to see that there is hope for their future. But its also now a platform for vile extremists to slander us.Social media companies were funded and founded in Northern California. But theyve begun to relinquish at moderation, especially X, which is supposedly moving to Texas.People have a First Amendment right to say terrible things about others. Ultimately, we need to marginalize these disgusting, vile, bigoted viewpoints that slander LGBTQ and show what the truth is.But how do we do that? Algorithms are making that impossible. The X thread about your Folsom appearance overflows with cruelty and falsehoods. Social media platforms must be accountable for what theyre doing to our democracy. Right now, theres no accountability, but they need to own the fact that they are helping fuel bigotry and brainwashing. But that wont happen, at least not now. Elon Musk is the head troll, and he just called you an utter scumbag. Not just a scumbag, but an utter one. Haha. Your response that this was a projection seems right on. But more generally, how do you translate the community event that celebrates sexuality to more conservative voters who dont know us?Folsom is a beautiful community event. But its not for everyone. If its not for you, dont go. Unfortunately, you now have a whole cottage industry of people cherry-picking this or that or the other thing happening at Folsom. Then, they use it to denounce an entire community. But most people people buy into that. Most people would agree that if you dont like it, dont go. We are talking about a limited group of people, but they are dangerous. A large majority of Americans support equality and people being able to associate with whomever they want and enjoy themselves. When I was young and with a limited income, I was able to live in queer communities, whether in West Village or Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C., or Castro. You could work in a cafe and rent a room in one of the safe places where you could develop personally and socially amid a supportive community. Is that dream now over for young people due to the cost of housing? The cost of housing in urban areas, which have historically been our havens, is a problem. Thats why I focus so much energy on trying to end our housing shortage, make it easier to build new homes, and bring down the cost. Its not just about the gay kids who want to live in the Castro. Its about, you know, people become homeless because theyve lost housing. They move to the suburbs, which creates longer commutes. What arguments should we employ to bring people around? We have a dysfunctional, broken system in which service workers cant afford to live in the communities where they work, and young people cant afford to live in the communities where they grew up. The Harris-Walz ticket is undoubtedly the most pro-gay in history, with Harris coming of age surrounded by queer community and Walz, of course, famously volunteering to advise the gay-straight alliance at the public school where he was a teacher.President Biden is the most pro-LGBTQ president in American history. Remember, he came out for marriage equality even before President Obama. Lets not forget this. And Ive known Kamala Harris for 22 years, and she gets it regarding LGBTQ people. We are going to have real friends in the White House. Can you tell me a personal story about Harris when she was in San Francisco? When she ran for District Attorney in 2003, I volunteered for the campaign and took her on a crawl of gay barsMidnight Sun, the Mix, Twin Peaks, to Daddys. She was just so at ease and just comfortable being in a queer environment. Shes 100 percent supportive. You have a law degree from Harvard and are now a prolific lawmaker. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMDonald Trumps trans panic could cost lives. Just look at the Lavender Scare. There is perhaps no more critical election in U.S. history than the one in which Americans will vote on November 5. Vice President Kamala Harris has said repeatedly as she campaigns that former president Donald Trump poses a threat to democracy as well as to a myriad of aspects of Americans daily lives. The specter of January 6, 2021, remains vivid for most Americans, so its not a hyperbolic statement or mere electioneering. In addition, Harris has cited the Heritage Foundations Project 2025, which is a plan to remake the American government. It will also deeply threaten historically marginalized communities, notably immigrants and LGBTQ+ people. Related An epidemic of hate is threatening South Africas progress toward LGBTQ+ equality A rise in hate crimes shows the most LGBTQ+-friendly country in Africa is succumbing to influence from surrounding nations. While Trump claims to know nothing about Project 2025, members of his former administration were among its authors and architects. Harris has it up on her website, so voters can see what Project 2025 would do, and she referenced it in the September 10 debate. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Yet since the debate, Americans have also witnessed firsthand the impact rumor and innuendo an important element in the Project 2025 playbook can have on whole communities after Trump asserted that Haitian immigrants in Ohio are kidnapping pets and eating them. That false claim debunked in real-time in the debate by ABC moderator David Muir and many times since by various Ohio officials, including law enforcement and even the Republican governor has shown the nation how a fast-moving rumor can impact both a small community like Springfield, Ohio and take over an entire country. From McCarthy to TrumpThats what happened when the Red Scare the threat of Communists infiltrating American society at every level in the 1940s and 1950s gave birth to the Lavender Scare: a belief that homosexual men and women were seen as sexual perverts, deviants and a national security threat. As Trump and his running mate, Ohio senator JD Vance, have made false accusations against Haitian immigrants, most Republicans in both the House and Senate have supported these rumors. This is similar to when Wisconsins Republican Sen. Joseph McCarthy spread rumors about Communists in the U.S. government decades ago. Many of McCarthys fellow Republicans at that time including President Dwight D. Eisenhower supported McCarthys dogged work to weed out Communists in American society, but it was also a bipartisan effort, with some Democrats supporting McCarthy as well. Democrats were also actively engaged in the homosexual purges that led to the Lavender Scare in which McCarthy claimed that homosexuals were more vulnerable to blackmail from the Soviets and were,, therefore,, a national security risk and posed a significant threat to the country as the Cold War ratcheted up.In 1947, the U.S. Park Police started their Sex Perversion Elimination Program, which targeted gay men for arrest and intimidation. In 1948, Congress passed an act for the treatment of sexual psychopaths in the nations capital. That law facilitated the arrest and punishment of people who acted on same-sex desire and also labeled them mentally ill.The subversive aspects of both homosexuality and Communism became linked. In 1950, even the Communist Party had issued a warning about the threat of homosexuality.McCarthys efforts to eradicate Communists and his focus on homosexuals in particular brought a significant number of closeted writers, actors, and even politicians before his House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) hearings. Ironically, his main support for his work was his assistant, 26-year-old Roy Cohn, a closeted gay man who would later become Donald Trumps attorney. Executive Order 10450 The direct connection between McCarthy and HUAC to Eisenhowers Executive Order 10450 issued on April 27, 1953, which led to the expulsion of homosexuals from all levels of American government remains unclear. But a link certainly existed. The policy was succinct and unforgiving: Anyone suspected of being a lesbian or gay man was summarily dismissed from their positions, no matter the placement. There were no protections for these men and women from being outed, either. The devastating impact of that policy reverberated for years and touched thousands of gay men and lesbians. Executive Order 10450 was not rescinded until 1995 and continued to bar gays from entering the military until the establishment of Dont Ask, Dont Tell, which in turn was not repealed until 2011. Eisenhowers own Project 2025Eisenhowers acceptance of McCarthys actions and McCarthyism itself has been minimized, yet it was only two months after issuing that executive order that Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed by the federal government on June 19, 1953 at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, New York. The Rosenbergs were the first American civilians to be executed for espionage and the first to be executed during peacetime. Eisenhower did not stop their execution.Eisenhower is often called the last good Republican president and a serious conservative who put country over party. Yet Eisenhowers history shows something quite different, and he succumbed to the worst aspects of bigotry and propagated two of the worst policies in modern U.S. history: his Executive Order 10450 and Operation Wetback even referencing the latter by name can get you a timeout on Twitter/X for using an ethnic slur.Executive Order 10450 removed homosexuals from every arena of American government from 1953 until well into the 1970s. The HUAC and Lavender Scare impact was extraordinary and largely hidden. In his 2020 book, The Deviants War: The Homosexual vs. the United States of America, Eric Cervini reports the prosecution of around one million gay or lesbian individuals in the U.S. from 1945 to 1960 and that by the end of the 1940s, Washington officials announced the Sex Perversion Elimination Program.Eisenhowers Operation Wetback removed Mexican immigrants, including American citizens, from the U.S. Millions of Mexicans had legally entered the country through joint immigration programs in the first half of the 20th century. Many of these immigrants were then naturalized citizens. Operation Wetback sent them back to Mexico in much the way Trump asserts he will do with immigrants if he is re-elected. This plan is also a foundational tenet of Project 2025. The ongoing purge But the assault on homosexuals was not just about McCarthy, nor was it solely the purview of Republicans. The Subcommittee on Investigations was chaired by Democratic Senator Clyde R. Hoey from 1949 to 1952 and investigated the employment of homosexuals in the Federal workforce. McCarthy embraced this theme in the HUAC hearings, as The Hoey Report stated that all of the governments intelligence agencies are in complete agreement that sex perverts in Government constitute security risks. The head of the Washington D.C Metropolitan Police Department vice squad, Lieutenant Roy Blick had testified that 5,000 homosexuals lived in Washington, D.C., and that around 3,700 were federal employees. This lit a fuse to weed out these men and women from the government. Chilling ripple effects Eisenhowers association with McCarthy highlights how he was far from a benign leader and was in fact one of the most dangerous for lesbians and gay men both at the time and historically. As renowned activist Harry Hay would later tell the New York Times, We lived in terror almost every day of our lives. The breadth of impact of the Lavender Scare has not been widely reported, but the 2017 documentary The Lavender Scare shows how even after men and women were purged from their government jobs, they were pursued by the policy. One example is Madeleine Tress, 24, who worked as an economist for the U.S. Department of Commerce when two investigators who worked for the U.S. Civil Service Commission called her in. They told her they had evidence of her lesbianism. She was asked to swear an oath. She asked for an attorney and was told she could not have one. Tress lost her job. Later, as the film details, she also lost her Fulbright award. NPR posted an interview with her in 2023, and the transcript is chilling. These incidental effects of Executive Order 10450 exemplifies what the confluence of McCarthy and Eisenhower did to gay men and lesbians with the Lavender Scare. But the impact went far beyond job losses. Some people died by suicide after being outed, as the repercussions were so devastating on multiple levels that they couldnt bear the fallout. They were labeled as deviants and ostracized in their respective professions. Will history repeat itself?Frank Kameny was working for the United States Army Map Service as an astronomer when he was fired in 1957 for being homosexual. Kameny tried repeatedly but was unable to find another job in the federal government after that firing. The impact that had on Kameny propelled him into becoming one of the most pivotal LGBTQ+ civil rights leaders, devoting his life to the gay rights movement. Kameny was instrumental in creating the Mattachine Society of Washington in 1960. In 1965, four years before the Stonewall Riots, Kameny picketed the White House on the grounds of gay rights. That same year on July 4, Kameny led a picket line for gay rights at Independence Hall, which included veteran Philadelphia lesbian activist Barbara Gittings. As the election approaches, lets remember this history of what a seemingly benign president and an ideologue of a senator can do to threaten, terrorize and even cause the deaths of whole groups of marginalized people. Its a lesson worth reviewing and a history that continues to impact LGBTQ+ history past and present.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 43 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.PRIDE.COM25 HILARIOUS reactions to Kamala Harris shutting down MAGA hecklers by ROASTING Trump's crowd sizeThat's gotta burn! (@) Not only has Vice President Kamala Harris won people over with her personality and policy positions, garnering her $1 billion in campaign contributions, but she has also become the queen of comebacks and her latest target was Trump-supporting hecklers. On Thursday, at a rally in La Crosse, Wis., Harris gave an impassioned speech about the importance of abortion rights, placing the blame e for the overturning Roe v. Wade squally on Trump's shoulder where it belongs. "We're not going to be gaslighted on this. We remember Donald Trump hand-selected three members of the United States Supreme Court with the intention that they would undo the protections of Roe v. Wade, and they did as he intended," she said to uproarious applause and cheers. That's when conservative hecklers started shouting at her from the audience, but Harris had the perfect comeback ready to go. "Oh, you guys are at the wrong rally," she said, causing her supporters to cheer even louder. "No, I think you meant to go to the smaller one down the street." You know, the one down the street where people pass out from heat exhaustion, Trump forces you to listen to his impromptu DJ set and racist rhetoric, and his crowds are never as big as he likes to claim.Considering how much Trump's ego is tied to the size of hiscrowds, this was a perfect way to diss him. But the roast didn't stop there; the internet was more than happy to keep it going on x (formerly Twitter), where people commented, "Of clock them again, mother" and "I'M SORRY SHE ATE THAT" and made jokes like, "She better stop with this heat or she might reverse all the hard work we've been doing on climate change!"Keep scrolling to see the funniest reactions to Kamala Harris cutting Trump down to size! WWW.PRIDE.COMWhat is solosexuality and how common is it?If you havent noticed yet, sexual identity is diverse and encompasses a wide range of preferences and behaviors. One emerging and often misunderstood identity is solosexuality, which refers to individuals who prefer or exclusively engage in masturbation over partnered sexual activities. For many solosexuals, this preference forms an integral part of their sexual identity. Despite its growing visibility, solosexuality is still frequently misunderstood and stigmatized. Lets take a look at the concept behind solosexuality, its origins, common misconceptions, and its growing prominence as a recognized identity. What is solosexuality?Solosexuality describes individuals who have a strong or exclusive preference for masturbation over other forms of sexual activity. For solosexuals, masturbation is not merely a substitute for partnered sex but a deeply satisfying and fulfilling practice.Although it may seem like it, solosexuality isn't the exact same thing as asexuality, but instead is a branch of it. Solosexuals may still participate in romantic relationships and maintain emotional bonds. Those who identify as solosexual may still desire emotional connections with others while preferring masturbation as their primary mode of sexual expression. This also doesn't mean that solosexuality is inherently linked with a lack of desire for intimacy. Many solosexuals maintain close friendships and other meaningful relationships while meeting their sexual needs through masturbation. The origin and evolution of the termWhile masturbation has always been a part of human sexuality, the recognition of solosexuality as a distinct identity has only recently gained prominence. The term "solosexual" has been in use since the late 1990s, though, like many recent terms for varying sexualities, it started gaining traction in the 2010s after communities formed on places like Reddit and BateWorld. This brought the conversation into the mainstream and gave a safe space for solosexuals to explore and connect with likeminded people. The cultural acceptance of solosexuality also grew as people steadily became more open about their sexual preferences. Over the last decade or so especially, the breakdown of taboos around masturbation and increased acceptance of diverse sexual identities has given solosexuals an avenue to express their identity and form communities, both online and in real-life settings like masturbation clubs in major cities. The community has also grown over the years as far as how they outwardly represent themselves, as well. They had a flag from pretty early on, but the community came together to create the flag in the first half of 2024, ultimately landing on one that represented masculinity (blue), virility (red), and the hanky code color for masturbation (white), with the five stripes representing the five fingers of a hand. However, like any other growing form of identity, solosexuality continues to battle stigma despite these advances, especially since a large populaion in the mainstream often regards masturbation as inferior to partnered sexual experiences.Solosexuality vs. pornosexualitySolosexuality is also often discussed alongside pornosexuality, but it's important to note their differences. Where solosexuals prefer masturbation, pornosexuals are individuals whose primary sexual attraction is directed toward pornography. Although there is overlap between solosexuals and pornosexuals, not all solosexuals rely on pornography for arousal. In fact, a number of solosexuals prefer internal fantasies, their partner, or even imagery of themselves as sources of sexual stimulation instead. Some solosexuals do not engage with pornography at all, as they view their sexual experiences as deeply personal and rooted in self-pleasure. In some cases, solosexuals may also identify as autosexul, or individuals sexually attracted to themselves. Masturbation serves as an intimate act for these individuals and fosters a unique connection with their own body, distinct from partnered sexual interactions.Misconceptions around solosexualityOne of the significant challenges that solosexuals face is the widespread belief that masturbation is a lesser or temporary form of sexual expression, viewed as inferior to partnered sex. They also face the stigma that their solosexuality is linked to unresolved trauma or social dysfunction. In national sex therapy discussions, some professionals have debated whether solosexuality is an intimacy-avoidant behavior stemming from early-life trauma or a legitimate sexual orientation in its own right. The notion that solosexuals are intimacy-avoidant or traumatized has been echoed in some clinical perspectives, but this is not universally applicable. While it is true that some individuals may identify as solosexual due to anxiety about intimacy or attachment difficulties, others are simply more comfortable and happier with solo sexual behaviors. Sex and intimacy specialists also note that many solosexuals are genuinely content and do not exhibit any psychological issues. I think I might be solosexual -- what do I do?Due to the growing visibility of solosexuality, it won't take you long to figure out you're not alone and there are plenty of online communities to embrace you without judgment. That said, despite its gaining traction, solosexuality still remains a largely misunderstood identity, so be ready. Most of the confusion stems from the fact that solosexuality intersects with other sexual and romantic identities in various ways. Some solosexuals may be aromantic, meaning they do not experience romantic attraction, while others are in committed relationships but prefer solo sexual activities over partnered sex.Additionally, some solosexuals view masturbation as a communal activity. They may participate in group masturbation or engage in settings dedicated to prolonged solo sexual experiences, such as gooninga kink that involves extended ecstatic masturbation sessions. Communal aspects demonstrate that solosexuality does not always mean isolation or a lack of connection with others. How to support your solosexual friendsSolosexuality, like other sexual orientations, is a valid expression of human sexuality. Though aspects of it may be debated in a professional space, it is clear that many solosexuals view their preference as an essential part of their identity. For these individuals, masturbation is not simply a means to an end; it is an intimate, self-affirming act that brings connection and satisfaction. If you find yourself on the end of judgment around solosexual individuals, just remember that they're content with their sexual identity, and they find emotional intimacy through friendships and family relationships while meeting their sexual needs through solo pleasure.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 59 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTim Walz defiantely defends trans people from Republicans demonizing attacksYesterday, Democratic vice presidential candidate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz defended transgender rights at length during his appearance on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast.During the discussion, co-host Abby Wambach discussed Walzs sponsorship of a gay-straight alliance while he worked as a school teacher in the 1990s. She said, Well, thank you Governor Walz so much for protecting, even in the late 90s, queer kids. And so I have to ask, what will a Harris-Walz administration do to protect our queer kids today? Related Kamala Harris points out that Trump supported gender-affirming care for inmates in Fox interview The Trump campaign has been attacking Harris for supporting the Constitutional right to health care in prison. She was ready with a response. Walz promptly responded by discussing possible actions that he and Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris could take, such as advocating for LGBTQ+ people, opposing hate crimes, and increasing education. Such ads have been a strong focus of former President Donald Trump while campaigning as the Republican presidential nominee. We see it now: The hate has shifted to the trans community, Walz said. They see that as an opportunity. If youre watching any sporting events right now, you see that Donald Trumps closing arguments are to demonize a group of people for being who they are. Were out there trying to make the case that access to healthcare, a clean environment, manufacturing jobs, and keeping your local hospital open are what people are really concerned about, he continued. Theyre running millions of dollars of ads demonizing folks who are just trying to live their lives. He then talked about the struggles of coming out for queer kids and how that can entirely change a familys politics.Look, youre reaching a lot of folks in hearing this, and for some people, [their anti-LGBTQ+ prejudice is] not even out of malice and its not a pejorative; its out of ignorance, he said. They maybe have not been around people. Youve all seen this, however it takes you to get there. But I know its a little frustrating when you see folks have an epiphany when their child comes out to them.Harris made a similar though shorter defense of trans people in her recent interview with Fox News Brett Baier. He had pressed her on the issue of trans rights, but she pivoted to talk about how shell enforce current laws protecting trans people and added that most Americans do not care about trans issues, making them a distraction from more pressing topics.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 42 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.PRIDE.COMFrom doodles to drag icons, this queer artist is illustrating his way into our heartsWhoever thought doom-scrolling would spark a conversation. While flipping through Instagram, I found an animated video of the fabulous TS Madison speaking with drag icon Katya Zamolodchikova. "Not the bore worms," Madison exclaims sensuously. Katya is shown laughing, with the illustrator dragging their shoulders up and down. This was my introduction to the phenomenal Jeffrey Aviles. From the Womb to the CanvasLike so many of us, Jeffrey grew up with cartoons as a staple in his childhood. For him, they provided the first source of artistic inspiration, and he created his designs based on Cartoon Network and Disney Channel shows. While some artists might be content with paying homage to the past, Aviles sought to infuse his work with a personal twist and make it unmistakably his own. "I like to think that I came out of the womb with paper and pencil," Jeffrey laughs. "I've always been drawing, and it's something that comes naturally to me," he shares. Though he dabbled in fashion and animation at school, he later dropped out to follow his artistic instincts. He believes, "If you do something and it comes out naturally, I think that's talent." Balancing the Personal and Pop CultureToday, Jeffrey's presence on social media has catapulted his work into the spotlight, with his followers awaiting to like and laugh at his latest post. "I like to be very unserious with my social media," Jeffrey admits. For him, social media is less about counting likes and more about sharing a public diary, which includes illustrations that span the spectrum from polished artwork to offbeat animations of iconic pop culture moments. "If you come to my page, you'll find something you'll like," he explains. "It's like Target: you go in there, there's something for everyone, and I hope you come out with a lot by the end of it." This easygoing attitude allows Jeffrey to effortlessly switch between different styles and themes.'Hunk-ing up our Queer WorldIf there's one project that Jeffrey holds close to his heart, it's his ongoing Hunk series. It's a colorful, playful universea bit Bratz meets Barbiewhere male characters are brought to life in all their muscular, expressive glory. "I wanted to create this perfect gay world where these different characters just accept one another and are friendly with one another," he explains. In Hunk, everyone is invited to the party, and there's no room for judgment. It's a reimagined world where anyone can feel welcomed beyond aesthetic perfection. "And if you get turned on by it, then hey, I don't mind that either," he laughs. The attention to detail, the fleshed-out personalities of each character, and the desire to create something beyond mere eye candy make this project his pride and joy. From Viral Videos to Collaborations with IconsOf course, our conversation wouldn't be complete without discussing those viral videos. These animated gems capture beloved queer moments, often taking scenes from shows like The Golden Girls or RuPaul's Drag Race and adding Jeffrey's comedic flair. These videos have garnered the attention of some pretty iconic figures, from TS Madison to queens like Raja and Tammy Brown. And time and time again, Jeffrey still sounds starstruck. "I love TS Madison! For her to notice me, this small artist, and share my workit's an honor!" Jeffrey's videos are an extension of his creativity and commitment to bringing humor and joy to his audience. He humbly admits that boredom was the initial inspiration behind these animations. Clearly, he's onto something special. "People have commented saying they've been going through hard times and that my page gives them a laugh," Aviles says. His ability to find humor in the mundanelike when Lady Gaga mentioned she "switched baristas" to Caitlyn Jennerspeaks to his unique sense of vision and imagination. Aviles has carved a space in our digital realm for mental rest and respite, coming away feeling a little lighter and more jovial. And his journey is far from over. Jeffrey is working on a calendar featuring some of his more intimate drawings and an upcoming collab with RPDR alum Tammy Brown. His videos also caught the eye of an award-winning writer-director Ernie Bustamante, who is producing a documentary on Sonia Manzano, the first Latina woman on Sesame Street. Jeffrey will lend his hand to include animated shorts in the film. As his profile rockets, he remains grounded, reminding us that unpolished, spontaneous moments often lead to the most beautiful, memorable work. And perhaps we can all remember that as we navigate our lives: to keep that sense of wonder alive, to experiment, and, most importantly, never be afraid of failure.Marie-Adlina de la Ferrire is the Community Editor at equalpride, publisher of Pride.com.Voices is dedicated to featuring a wide range of inspiring personal stories and impactful opinions from the LGBTQ+ and Allied community. WWW.PRIDE.COMWhat's the deal with Cooper Koch's wedding ring?Cooper Koch's wedding ring has not gone unnoticed by eagle-eyed fans. But the story behind it isn't quite what you'd expect.Koch, who made waves as Erik Menendez in Ryan Murphy's controversial Netflix drama about the infamous brothers, stopped by Andy Cohen Live this week to chat about his work. But things took a personal turn when Cohen spotted the wedding band on his finger and asked for the scoop. As it turns out, the actor started wearing the ring because he needed a piece of jewelry to wear to the Emmy Awards, where his twin brother, Payton, was nominated for editing."I was with my boyfriend, and we went into my room, and I was looking through my jewelry. And I had this ring that was my grandfather's, and I was like, 'Oh, I should just wear this ring,'" he said. "And then we just put it on my ring finger, and it just kind of became this little, I don't know... romantic, like, protective mechanism."In other words, Koch is taken, even if the ring on his finger doesn't represent the legal commitment broken hearted fans initially assumed. This also represents his public confirmation that he's in a relationship, although the identity of his beau remains a mystery for the time being."He's very much committed to me, as much as I am to him," he said of his boyfriend, before adding, "We do need to get him a ring. But it's really more of a nice, like, totem."0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 56 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.PRIDE.COMEverything you need to know about the Greys Anatomy writer who faked cancer & new docuseriesElisabeth Finch, the queer former Greys Anatomy writer, and co-executive producer who faked having cancer, is back in the headlines this week because Peacock just released Anatomy of Lies, a docuseries about the hoax. The 47-year-old accused grifters name was first splashed across the front page back in March 2022 when The Ankler published an expos alleging that she had been lying about a rare cancer diagnosis, which even inspired a few episodes of the steamy medical drama. The wild lies she told are the subject of the new documentary series, including the fact that she shaved her own head and faked having to take breaks to throw up in the bathroom to further her story, EW reports.Who is Elisabeth Finch?Elisabeth Finch is a television writer who worked on shows like True Blood and The Vampire Diaries before landing a job as a writer on Greys Anatomy based on the lie that she had cancer. While working on The Vampire Diaries, she began telling family, friends, and colleagues that she had been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer called chondrosarcoma and would have to go through chemotherapy. It was an essay she penned for Elle about her experience living with cancer that caught the eye of Greys Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes, who was so impressed she offered her a job. That did Elisabeth Finch lie about?Ive never had any form of cancer, she later admitted to The Ankler after her lies had been exposed. I told a lie when I was 34 years old and it was the biggest mistake of my life. It just got bigger and bigger and bigger and got buried deeper and deeper inside me.But if that wasnt bad enough, she also claimed that she had to have a life-saving abortion after becoming pregnant while undergoing chemotherapy. She went on to tell people that she had to have part of her tibia removed as part of her cancer treatment and that she lost a kidney because of her chemo treatments. According to a Vanity Fair report that came out in 2022, Finch also told people the wild lie that True Blood star Anna Paquin had donated a kidney to her (although Finch claims she never said this), People reported. Her myriad health conditions werent the only thing she lied to those close to her about. She also told people that a close friend died during the 2018 domestic terrorist attack at the Tree of Life Synagogue, even though she didnt know any of the victims. Despite her older brother being alive and well, she also told colleagues that he was abusive during their childhood and that he attempted suicide but ended up shooting himself in a non-fatal way, which forced her to make the decision to pull the plug and end her brothers life. How was she caught?Sadly, Finchs lies finally caught up to her after she got married. In 2019, she checked herself into a mental health clinic after claiming she had PTSD from her experience with the Tree of Life tragedy (which she lied about). There, she met mother-of-five Jennifer Beyer, who was dealing with PTSD in the aftermath of an abusive marriage. The two fell in love and got married in 2020, but before long, Beyer found herself questioning Finchs stories. A little internet sleuthing later, and Beyer confirmed her worst suspicions. Then, two years after they tied the knot, while the couple was getting divorced, Beyer told Rimes and Greys Anatomy showrunner Kris Vernoff about what she had discovered. After doing their own investigation, the executives at Shondaland and Disney confirmed that Finch had been lying. What is the docuseries about? (@) The docuseries is based on a two-part Vanity Fair article by Evgenia Peretz, who also directed the show alongside her husband, David Schisgall. The three-part series tells the story of Finch's increasingly complicated web of lies beginning in 2015 and takes viewers through the publication of the bombshell article that exposed all of her lies.Finch refused to take part in the docuseries, but after its release, she posted a long statement on Instagram that said in part, "I trapped myself in the addiction of lies, betraying and traumatizing my closest family, friends, and colleagues. I'm making amends and expressing my genuine remorse as best I can when people are ready. And I've accepted the fact that some may never be. I've been receiving mental health treatment for nearly three years, and I work hard every day to sustain a life where the truth matters more than anything."See on InstagramWhere is Elizabeth Finch now? After getting caught, she was placed on administrative leave and then resigned from Greys Anatomy and checked herself into the same mental health facility where she went to deal with her faux PTSD. Then, more than six months later, she confessed to her long string of lies in an interview with The Ankler. She hasnt returned to television writing since.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 46 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.PRIDE.COMAngie Katsanevas calls out Lisa Barlow ahead of 'RHOSLC' reunion tapingShe may be Greek, but don't expect an olive branch from her.Angie Katsanevas has quickly become a top-tier Housewife since her debut on season three of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.Back then, she was simply a 'friend' and just two seasons later, she's holding center snowflake on the hit show's intro. Talk about main character energy! To celebrate the new season and her promoted role, Katsanevas returned to Piranha Nightclub and Gipsy Nightclub in Las Vegas to reunite with her passionate LGBTQ+ fans and tease what's to come in upcoming episodes."The gays love Angie K and Angie K loves the gays! I'm an ally to the LGBTQ+ community. I've had to work for everything since I was a young kid and I put in the work. I give 150 million percent to everything I do in my home with my family and on the show," Katsanevas tells PRIDE. See on Instagram Fans of RHOSLC always love the drama and shifting dynamics between the ladies, so it's safe to say audiences are enjoying the tension rise between Katsanevas and her former bestie Lisa Barlow."It's actually disheartening. I thought that we had a stronger friendship than that. We're not seeing eye-to-eye and I hope that we can address some things at the reunion. She's still tweeting and being a twat on Twitter. I'm too busy to respond."Beyond her beef with Barlow, Katsanevas' feud with Meredith Marks isn't slowing down as the women still aren't on friendly terms from the past couple seasons."I'm really going to leave it to the viewers this season. I brought the scroll. I have a sense of humor! I've tried to be nice, I've tried to be funny... I've done it all and nothing has worked. You guys decide at the end of the season. Who put in the work to try and make it work?"Although she's going back and forth with a couple of her costars, Katsanevas has become best friends with OG RHOSLC star Mary Cosby and fans are living for the dynamic duo."I didn't know I needed it, but I needed it! We make each other laugh. It's effortless. It's a real friendship and I love her. I couldn't ask for a better friend."The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City airs Wednesday nights on Bravo. WWW.PRIDE.COMNick Smith finally said the thing we all know about gays and Halloween out loudInfluencer Nick Smith is calling other gays out for the Halloween costumes he just knows everyone is going to put together this year, like every other year."You know that meme where it's the drawing of the horse, and it's incredibly detailed, and as the drawing goes on, it fiddles out?" he asked during a recent episode of the I Never Liked You podcast he co-hosts with Matteo Lane. "That is gay Halloween costumes."He went on to clarify what he meant, talking about the "incredibly ornate detail" that often goes into the top half of a costume, "and then just jockstrap and sneakers.""That was basically me last year," Lane admitted, laughing. "I was sexy Squirtle.""Yes. Every gay detail, detail, detail, jock," Smith said.Is he wrong? Mmm, no, there's definitely some truth to that. Halloween has long been used as an excuse to dress up in wild and raunchy costumes. And for some people, going all out means striking that chaotic balance between showing off their costuming skills and showing off...other things they've got going for them.@thatnicksmith09Gays on Halloween are nothing if not consistent! Watch the full episode at thekink in my bio! @MatteoLane #halloween #podcast #ineverlikedyou #matteolane #nicksmithUltimately, Smith admitted he just isn't a big fan of Halloween."When I can't see people's faces, it really freaks me out. Especially here in the city... And it's like, the costume aspect? I mean, it's fine. The candy? I don't love candy," he said. "Now I know why I'm single."0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 57 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.PRIDE.COMTegan Quin gets raw about toxic stan culture: 'Our society is f*cked'Tegan Quin has a stark opinion on modern stan culture and shes not holding back anymore. Every artist feels this way. Every famous person feels this way. Every politician, everybody who is even remotely famous, has dealt with this as far back as the Beatles and Elvis, Quin tells PRIDE. People are stalked I mean, look at Princess Diana to death in some cases. Most of the famous people you love at some point or another have gates and security at their houses. Theyre constantly hunted by paparazzi, and every single one of us is guilty for clicking on celebrity gossip and photos. Our society is fucked. Those are some strong words, but then Quin has very good reason to feel so passionately about the state of the fandom union. It is earned outrage, as audiences will see displayed and unwound in the frequently shocking and utterly absorbing documentary Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan & Sara. The film sees the singer alongside filmmaker Erin Lee Carr (Britney Vs. Spears, Mommy Dead and Dearest) embarking on a years-long investigation into a fan turned catfish known as Fegan (fake Tegan). Fegan has spent more than a decade terrorizing Tegan and Sara and using the formers identity to manipulate and emotionally torture their fans. Along the way, the very real Tegan is forced to confront both victims and perpetrators in the hunt to discover who hacked her personal files and attacked them as well as the people closest to them publicly. This person shared intimate details, photos, unreleased demos, private family medical information, and more with the world, and generally robbed the duo of a kind of innocence and feeling of safety, both in their spaces with fans and with their closest inner circle and even romantic relationships.Fanaticals premise sounds like a nail-biting true crime story and a whodunit. What it ultimately proves to be is more of a whydunit and a treatise on a larger societal problem, one egged on by a culture that encourages toxic parasocial relationships. Spurring these conversations is a major factor in why Quin decided that now was the time to open up and tell the world about this genuinely frightening chapter of her life. The Quins, whove always shared a deep connection to their fans, have in recent years increasingly shared pieces of their histories in intimate projects that go beyond their music. With their memoir-turned-TV-series High School, their graphic novel Junior High, and their Words + Music piece Under Our Control, Tegan and Sara have propped open the door to previously private parts of their lives but always with a purpose in mind.[With] High School and Junior High, the purpose was to create LGBTQ content to hopefully reach a younger audience, or anyone who was searching for it, recalls Quin. With Fanatical theres a desire to have this reach fans and regular human beings, and to have them ask the hard questions they ask themselves, [like] are they currently having a parasocial relationship with a famous person and band? Are they projecting or imparting feelings, thoughts, emotions, and experiences into a celebrity or someone they dont actually know? What does their behavior online look like? I hoped that people would watch it, and even just on a baseline level, would say, Man, its maybe not nice to say shitty things under a celebritys Instagram post, because theyre actually real people, and they feel like shit when they have to see that, and it drives them offline. When Quin initially sat down to write the story, her intent was for it to possibly become a podcast; however, it quickly took on a life of its own with [producer] Jenny Eliscu and [director] Erin Lee Carr coming on board and developing it into a film. Its timing feels serendipitous as it drops this week just as were in the midst of a larger cultural conversation around how fans interact and have expectations from the celebrities they adore. While fandom isnt innately problematic, when lines grow fuzzy and disappear, or the love turns to resentment, it can become not just unhealthy but dangerous. Its something that Chappell Roan has notably been speaking out about in recent months, a conversation that Quin not only relates to but applauds.First of all, I love Chappell, and I think its so amazing that shes speaking out the way that she is. I think this younger generation in general then, of course, the celebrity or music or entertainment side of this younger generation is so amazing. They catapult themselves onto social media with like, brazen [confidence], no media training, no filter, and its amazing, she says. I think whats happening with Chapell right now is the latest version of taking a normal person and then tossing them into another universe. Its unnatural, its sickening, what happens when you become that famous that quickly. Its something thats been on the minds of both Quin sisters lately. Sara said something recently that was really interesting, recounts Quin. There has been a lot of focus on female artists, specifically like Mitski, boygenius, Hayley Williams, and Chappell Roan in the last handful of years, talking about how overwhelming and scary [it can be]. Theres been this narrative that came out that both our ears have pricked up about, profiling how all the queer artists are being attacked by their queer audience. While those conversations are certainly valid and essential, they really are just the tip of the iceberg, as Quin is quick to point out.It feels like maybe a teeny bit yucky, she continues. Because Justin Biebers been screaming for people to listen to him and stop hunting him and stalking him and ruining his life for years. Katy Perry wore an Adidas tracksuit for, like, three years in public because then it made the photos that the paparazzi were trying to sell less valuable. While on paper its quite obvious that all of this is profoundly problematic, its been so normalized in practice that its seen as a victimless crime but thats far from the truth, and its far from uncommon. This is literally what we do to the people we love, explains Quin. We have a systemic problem when we have a culture that rewards you for curating intensely intimate and inappropriate information for strangers on the internet. We reward people for telling us too much. The algorithm rewards you for showing too much. And certainly from the music side of things record companies, publishers, streamers, touring companies everybodys like, Get on social media, say more about yourself, give the more intimate portraits. Were being encouraged to build these parasocial relationships. So, I just think we have a bigger problem than we know how to deal with right now.But the Quins realize theyre not powerless, and through Fanatical theyre reclaiming some of their agency by opening up and revealing a story that has thrived in the dark, especially because up until the day of our interview, Quin reveals, fake Tegan remains active in their catfishing endeavors. There are still people who are grappling with the reality of this and are unsure if its me or not, and fake Tegan was still responding to some of the victims. So, I just hoped that the movie would blow up fake Tegan and theyd stop doing it, she reveals. Because the truth is, people have and continue to be hurt by their catfishing, including the Quins. It makes me sad when people approach me and are like, Do you know who I am? Weve been talking online for years. Its sad. It makes me feel sick. It makes me feel bad. I think that I just hoped that by telling the story, we could change those things, Quin says.Making the film has offered both Quin and the victims a surprising amount of catharsis. A whole new buffet of positives and negatives came out of it. I was like, Oh my god, this is kind of cathartic. Oh my god, maybe this could be cathartic for the other victims. Oh, wow. It is cathartic for them. Oh, wow, theyre all carrying grief, too. And theyre carrying trauma. A lot of them were involved in things that were really sketchy and many people apologized for some of their behaviors, and that was really helpful to me to move past some of the things that had happened to us, she shares. It also gave Quin a chance to unburden herself of many things shes held back from saying in the past. I definitely feel like thats partly because were 25 years in, and we kind of dont give a shit anymore. For years, we felt silenced by the culture, by our industry, by the power that the fan has. Were supposed to just be good, were supposed to just be kind and grateful and never be entitled, and definitely never express any sort of exhaustion or fatigue, she shares. All of a sudden its nice to be in a film going, Do you notice the barricades and the security? Theres a reason why those are there. Youre a huge mass of people, many of whom, who knows what you would do. I think the vast majority of people are well-meaning, but people do crazy things and they do things that are really wild sometimes. It also gave her a greater sense of empathy for both the victims, the perpetrators and those who were a bit of both, all of whom Quin says she wants to protect from feeling villainized, including fake Tegan, she adds. I have a lot of compassion for everybody, even fake Tegan, honestly. Lifes hard. The worlds hard. Navigating this is hard. We all have issues. Its an incredibly empathetic and generous response, but one that came at the end of many difficult conversations, particularly with those who straddled the line of injured party and offender, particularly ones who still didnt seem to understand how painful and violating the catfishing was for Quin herself. My email has been hacked, my world has been upended. I was afraid and to say that to some of these people and have them react in a way that was very shocking. Many of the victims were like, Yeah? Why? Youre rich and famous and popular and like, you probably dont even care. [I was like,] What!? That never got easier to hear, she recalls. And yet, she has hopes that this film will be healing for everyone involved including fake Tegan. Im hoping the movie is a gentle, ethical, compassionate look at people who made some mistakes or some decisions and got hurt or hurt other people, she explains. Quin was ultimately able to get some of the if not every answer she set out to find. Life is rarely as neat and tidy as we would like. Once we sort of figured it out, like, Oh shit, its this person. I just felt a lot of compassion for them. I was like, This is a complicated character. This is a person with a lot of stuff. The common denominator among everyone that comes into the story is that they were really young and they were queer, and I think I have maybe a little excess compassion because of that, she reflects, adding that she is ready to move on. I would love to talk to them. Id love to talk to the person who I think is fake Tegan as fake Tegan. I want them to know theyre absolved in a way. I want them to know that Ive forgiven them, and I can move on. But I dont think thats going to happen.Quin may know who is behind the years-long hacking and who created so much turmoil in both sisters lives and that of their loved ones but the larger mission continues. Its bigger than a person. Its the psychology of human beings and loneliness and queerness and the Internet and parasocial relationships, and its just so big, she concludes.Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara is streaming now on Hulu. The two-minute video opens with the father a farmer driving a tractor. It then shares that more trans teens have attempted suicide since states passed anti-trans laws. The father stops driving to examine a photo of himself with a male-presenting child. The pair are wearing matching camouflage jackets and the photo says, Holter and Dad, Father-Son Team 1st Place, Archery. Related First national estimate of trans youth reveals devastating mental health crisis The study calls for more interventions to create safer and more supportive environments for this demographic. If you want to change your name, if you want to wear a dress I dont know the kind of support you need, but lets get you some for all this, this transgender stuff. The girls face brightens. Wait, are you serious? Dad, what is this? This is me supporting you, he replies. This is me saying I love you. This is me not losing you.The pair embraces as the dad looks near tears. He tells his daughter he loves her, and then after a pause, he calls her by her new name: Holly. The video was created by the Not Losing You Film Project, a non-profit working to prevent trans youth suicide and support rural LGBTQ+ youth during the 2024 election. The website explains that the filmmaker, James Lantz, protested and was arrested at the Pennsylvania State Capitol to bring attention to the five trans and non-binary youth suicides that have occurred in the same Pennsylvania county where many anti-LGBTQ legislations in Pennsylvania were sponsored, supported and pushed by GOP Majority Whip, State Senator Ryan Aument.Lantzs advocacy work can also be found through his web series, Angry Gay Grandpa. The onslaught of legislative attacks against trans youth has caused a mental health crisis among the group. A study published in September revealed that anti-transgender laws have a direct, causal relationship with youth suicide attempts and that attempted suicide rates increased by as much as 72% following the passage of such laws.Editors note: If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMIran is extremely hostile to LGBTQ+ people. Its also a global hub for gender-affirming surgery.Throughout history, theprime stimuli maintaining LGBTQ+ oppression have been the destructive doctrines and judgments radiating from primarily orthodox and fundamentalist religious communities.Individuals and organizations have utilized religion to justify the marginalization, harassment, denial of rights, persecution, oppression, and murder of entire groups of people based on their identities. They are also actively fighting a horrific war against LGBTQ+ people by tossing people suspected of engaging in same-sex sexuality (primarily men) from high rooftops as others below pelt them with rocks.During the heightened and continuing tensions in the Middle East,Iranhas come to the attention of the world community as it supplies financial aid and armaments to its proxies (including Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthis) who are launching bombs and lethal drones in attempts to bury the state of Israel. In a metaphorical sense, the repressiveIranianregime has launched a deadly war on its own citizens to the point of execution.Let us not forget that sinceIrans revolution, which replaced the Shah with an orthodox theocracy, many segments of the population have experienced repression underIranianSharia law, including women, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans residents. Even same-sex sexuality between consenting partners in private is defined as acrime.Iranianlaw condemns men involved in sexually penetrative acts (sodomy orlavat) with punishments ranging from flogging to death, and so-called non-penetrative acts (tafkhiz, placing of a mans sexual organ between another mans thighs or buttocks Article 235 of the countrys penal code) with flogging.Irans Legal Code Article 237 prescribes the punishment of between 31 to 74 lashes for homosexuality of the male human [shown through] sexual conduct that falls short oflavatandtafkhizsuch as kissing or lustful touching. WWW.PRIDE.COMCate Blanchett talks man buns & giant female brains in 'Rumours'The satirical film Rumours arrives just in time for the 2024 U.S. presidential election to excavate the size of womens brains, perceived male primacy among world leaders, and exactly what language Alicia Vikanders character speaks when shes distressed. For the record, its Swedish. The genre-defying film is set at the G7, the annual economic summit of seven leaders from democratic countries. Leaders from Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy, the United States, and France toil away at useless economic plans while a giant brain pulsates in the forest and zombies prone to circle-jerking around a bonfire take over the world. The cast of Rumours Courtesy Bleecker Street Its Cate Blanchetts host of the summit and German chancellor, Hilda, who determines Vikanders secretary-general of the European Commission, Celestine, is in fact, not speaking gibberish as the other world leaders contend when they find her wandering the woods of Bavaria. Written and directed by Guy Maddin and Evan and Galen Johnson, Rumours is guffaw-inducing in its ridiculousness and searing in its depiction of a failure of leaders to lead even among themselves during a zombie uprising. One of the films delights is its satirizing of gender roles, which Blanchett notes is timely. A running joke in the film is that Hilda, Celestine, and the U.K.s Prime Minister Cardosa (Nikki Amuka-Bird) have all succumbed to the wiles of the man bunsporting Canadian P.M., Maxime, who is given to wide emotional swings when he drinks.I think the G7 sometimes can seem satirical without even doing anything. But what I love about the script that was so beautifully wrought is that it leans into, in a really delicious way, into cultural stereotypes and into tropes about female leaders, Blanchett says. I mean, there's still judgments made about whether they have children or not, whether theyre married or not, about their sexual orientation, how they dress. Theyre scrutinized in a way that male leaders arent. The [writer-directors] really leaned into that," says the double Oscar-winner who launched a program to benefit women, trans, and nonbinary filmmakers. The cast of Rumours Courtesy Bleecker Street When Italian P.M. Antonio (Rolando Ravello), U.S. President Edison (played by quintessentially British actor Charles Dance), and Denis Mnochets French President Sylvain happen upon the outsized brain in the woods, Sylvain authoritatively declares it must be a womans giant brain because its smaller than of a mans giant brain.Thats the moment Blanchett says is the pinnacle of how Maddin and the Johnson brothers skewered sexism. To actually be able to laugh at that when there is such rampant aspirational misogyny in the world at the moment, Blanchett says. I think it's a collective laugh at the stupidity of a lot of the assumptions that are made about female leaders.Watch the full interview with Blanchett and Denis Mnochet above. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTrans assault survivor endures nightmare ordeal after court deadnames herA transgender woman in Vallejo, California has endured a distressing legal hurdle after being assaulted: The district attorneys legal paperwork exclusively refers to her by her deadname.Jeriann Guzmann had her name legally changed in 2012, so she was shocked when her countys district attorney sent a letter to her sons home addressed to her deadname. She hasnt lived at that address for 15 years. Related Black transgender woman repeatedly deadnamed after fatal hit-and-run Her family contacted media outlets but the errors havent been corrected. Im frustrated. Im angry, because deadnaming a trans person, that leads us into depression can lead to suicidality, can lead to anxiety, and this is why we dont like dealing with authorities, Guzman told the Vallejo Sun.The ordeal caused a lot of challenges for her, as she ran into quite a bit of trouble correcting this issue with the DAs office. Subscribe to our Newsletter today When she reported the error to the woman at the front desk, the receptionist would not allow her to speak to anyone else. Both the police report and the county system were listed under her deadname. The receptionist told her to sign the restitution form by her deadname, which Guzman was not willing to do.So youre telling me to commit fraud, because that person no longer exists, Guzman saidThe police department had their doors closed, and no one answered the after-hours phone. Over a week later, her call had still not been returned. Next, she reached out to Tom Bartee, district director for State Sen. Bill Dodd (D). Bartee said he would reach out to the DAs office on her behalf. She eventually received a call from Solano County Deputy District Attorney Jordan Karmann, who apologized for the delays and for her deadname being present, saying he had no idea how this happened.Karmann told her that while the police report had the right name, the court documentation and cover letter did not. The receptionist had only looked at the cover letter. He said that he would get this addressed in court with a note to the judge. The DAs office also advised the police on this. No one knows how the incident happened. Guzman is unable to get a copy of the police report as they have not given her the necessary information. Its not just me now, being transgender. There are 250,000 of us in the state of California, Guzman said. How many DAs arent willing to do the extra legwork and say, No, this is so and so.? How many people in the state of California are getting information sent to addresses that they havent looked at in 15 years? She has also had similar issues with other government agencies. When I applied for a hunting license they said that I didnt exist. [Deadname] existed, she said, adding they told her they got the information from the DMV. She had reached out to the senior district representative for U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA), Mel Orpilla, who put her in touch with the head of the Sacramento DMV, who stated she was listed under Jeriann Guzman. So then he kicked it over to the Department of Fish and Game, the head of Fish and Game called me, and we did everything over the phone to get my record so I could actually be getting my own license, she said.Shes also been billed twice for the same procedure under Medicaid, with one bill going to her deadname and one going to Jeriann. Ive gone again with Mel all the way to Social Security to figure out what the hell is going on. She also had an issue with unemployment benefits, who told her that she did not exist. It took six weeks for this to get straightened out after numerous bureaucratic hassles. All of these hoops directly cost her money. She reports having to spend over $400 because every agency wants an original copy of her name and gender change. It costs $40 every time she requests copies from the court. We are the poorest of the poor, the most educated, but the poorest of the poor, she said. She had immense trouble trying to find employment. I had 300 applications out, and the best job I could get at the time was Savers in Vacaville at $8.50 an hour, after I had been managing the Marriott Hotel in Napa, she said. If I was found dead, are they going to use my deadname, even though I legally changed my name? Deadnaming trans people not only disrespects them in death, but in life we fight so hard to be our authentic selves, and for something like this to happen, shows me that no matter what I do, I can never be me.Spokesperson for the Vallejo Police Department Rashad Hollis told the Vallejo Sun via email, Please have Ms. Guzman contact Vallejo PDs records division or talk to our records clerks in our lobby to correct any discrepancies.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 41 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMConservatives tried to start a boycott of LGBTQ+-friendly businesses. Their efforts backfired.Several small business owners in Lancaster, Ohio, say they saw an increase in new customers after a local anti-LGBTQ+ group tried to start a boycott campaign against them.According to local NBC affiliateWCMH, the group Fairfield County Conservatives began circulating a list of local small businesses on social media following two September city council meetings at which members protested drag performances hosted during Lancasters family-friendly Pride celebration the same month. Members characterized the events as pornographic, an anti-LGBTQ+ tactic that has become all too common in recent years. Related Conservatives say boycott overtrans-inclusive policiescost Planet Fitness millions. Its a lie. Conservatives are mad someone got kicked out of Planet Fitness after taking pictures of another gym-goer in the womens locker room. Fairfield County Conservatives member Chuck Burgoon, who is also the executive director of Fairfield Family Forum, told WCMH that the groups list was meant to inform the community about businesses that have supported The Rainbow Alliance of Fairfield County, a local LGBTQ+ group that hosted the Pride events. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today None of us have called for anyone to boycott these businesses; we were just trying to figure out who was supporting [the events], Burgoon said. Our downtown has suffered greatly, and it has come back now. We dont want to lose that again, so we havent called for anybody to boycott anyone. But the owners of businesses on the list arent buying it. Brandon Love, owner of gift shop Bewilderment argues that the list was always meant to discourage people from patronizing the businesses on it. He claims to have seen posters slandering his shop around town, while Teresa Speakman, whose Mud Gallery was not on the list, says shes seen Fairfield County Conservatives members taking photos and videos of businesses in downtown Lancaster with pro-LGBTQ+ signage and merchandise.Love thinks that if Fairfield County Conservatives are going to launch a boycott, they need to stand by it.If the group had intended to launch a boycott, their efforts apparently backfired.Weve probably had at least 200 people who have never been to Lancaster that have come to town to support the boycotted businesses, Love said. People from, not just Columbus, but out of state have been visiting us on the daily now, and so its definitely something I didnt expect. Speakman, an LGBTQ+ ally who displays a Pride flag at her gallery, said shes also seen increased support. Ive had people come in here and say, Oh, thank you for your flag, your rainbow flag, thank you for being here. Thank you for being a safe space, she told WCMH. Im always interested in building community, and Im an ally of anyone that needs a safe space.Love has even responded to Fairfield County Conservatives list with his own, comprised of many of the same businesses on the anti-LGBTQ+ groups as well as others that are either LGBTQ+-owned or supportive.Brandon took their boycott list and made another list public that said, Hey, these are actually businesses that you do want to support, Speakman explained. So, it was kind of turned around to being shared and shared and shared, and has brought me a lot more people that have found me. Ive been boycotted before as a queer-owned business, I think Ohios just kind of sick of their rhetoric and tired of being a hateful state, said Love. Its just not true, this is our home, too. Were queer people, were here, we have communities, we have businesses. At the same time, Burgoon and other members of Fairfield County Conservatives continue to push for the Lancaster city council to adopt a measure banning adult cabaret performances. According to WCMH, the measure would be similar to House Bill 245, a Republican-backed bill introduced in July 2023 that opponents say would amount to a state-wide ban on drag performances in public spaces.During testimony before the Ohio House Criminal Justice Committee in June, Democrats questioned why the bill would be necessary when local laws address lewd behavior. But for members of Fairfield County Conservatives, those existing laws dont go far enough. At a September 23 city council meeting, members of the group shared a screenshot from a video taken during a September 14 Lancaster Pride event showing a drag performer with their legs splayed open. Lancaster city law director Stephanie Hall argued that while she considered the image tasteless, the performer did not break any laws. The video from that night shows the performer in question was in that position for a split second while performing a dance routine. Dance, like speech, is an expression that is protected, Hall said, according to WCMH. Fairfield County Conservatives member Robert Knisley said this was why the group is pursuing a legislative solution.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 36 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMRepublicans are mostly united in their views on LGBTQ+ rights. Democrats are not.Late last month, the Eleventh Circuit court of appeals heard oral arguments for a lawsuit filed on behalf of LGBTQ+ teachers in Florida over a new education policy that prohibits teachers from using pronouns or titles that do not correspond with the sex assigned to them at birth.Although Florida often dominates the headlines when it comes to battles over education and LGBTQ+ rights, these kinds of lawsuits are cropping up across the country. Earlier this month, a district court awarded a Virginia teacher nearly $600,000 after he sued his former employer, who fired him when citing his religious faith, he refused to use the correct pronouns for a transgender student.Last spring, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the firing of a gay teacher at a private Catholic high school in North Carolina after that teacher married his long-time partner. Related Another Democrat bends on trans rights in new ad responding to GOP attacks If Democrats begin to compromise on transgender rights the damage could be irreversible, one advocate warned. Not surprisingly, political affiliation affects how the public reacts to these kinds of lawsuits. In a recent national survey we conducted with the assistance of the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), participants were randomly assigned to read a story either about a transgender teacher being fired from a religious school for coming out as transgender or about a religious teacher being fired from a private secular school for refusing to use the pronouns of a transgender student. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Only 23 percent of Republicans thought that the private secular school should have the legal right to fire the religious teacher. The vast majority (91 percent) thought doing so was morally wrong. Yet, 77 percent said it was lawful to fire the transgender teacher from a religious school. Republicans, in other words, had strong and relatively uniform reactions to these two scenarios.Democrats were much more likely to support the rights of the transgender teacher and to oppose the rights of the religious teacher. But whereas nine out of ten Republicans took a supportive view of the religious teacher, only two-thirds of Democrats expressed support for the transgender teacher.One-third of the Democrats who read about the religious teacher at a secular school opposed the teachers firing. About the same number (34 percent) of the Democrats who read about the transgender teacher at a religious school supported firing that teacher. Among Independents, there was an even greater divide, with an almost even split in their views on the religious and transgender teachers. The GOP has prioritized a concentrated attack on transgender personhood and rights, and public opinion polls suggest that its base tows the party line. Much of the partys anti-trans attacks have focused on public schools, which Republicans have blamed for grooming children and violating conservative parents rights to dictate their childs gender expression. In contrast, Democrats, who purportedly seek to defend transgender people amidst widespread conservative attacks are, in fact, far less ideologically coherent. Democrats are more heterogeneous when it comes to their attitudes, appearing more receptive to the conservative idea that transgender rights have gone too far. Political scientists Matt Grossmann and David Hopkins call this asymmetric polarization. Republicans tend to be a coalition unified by a particular ideology, one which is both anti-public school and anti-LGBTQ+ rights, whereas Democrats tend to be a coalition of numerous group-based identities. It may thus be easier to mobilize Republicans around specific attitudes on religion and LGBTQ+ people than it is to mobilize Democrats around these same issues. This reality makes the fight for LGBTQ+ students and teachers rights all the more challenging. While the Biden administration did publish new guidelines in Title IX to incorporate sexual orientation and gender identity protections, twenty-two Republican-led states have sued to halt them from taking effect. And for two decades now, the Supreme Court has made it increasingly easy for private religious schools to both absorb public education funding and to lawfully discriminate against their workforce. With Florida and other states expanding school voucher programs where public money can support private (and often religious) schools and Oklahoma mandating the display of the Ten Commandments in all public classrooms, battles over education, religion, and LGBTQ+ rights are likely to intensify. This election season, the Heritage Foundations Project 2025 proposal to privatize education may further exacerbate conflicts around religious freedom and LGBTQ+ rights. With Democrats holding more sympathy for religious teachers objections to respecting students pronouns than Republicans do for transgender teachers, LGBTQ+ advocates have an uphill battle when it comes to education and religion. In fact, there is evidence that all Americans not just Republicans are becoming more opposed to various measures of transgender rights and more supportive of religious refusals to serve or accommodate LGBTQ+ people. LGBTQ+ rights reveal fractures within the Democratic party. But LGBTQ+ people are more than polling metrics, and the GOPs anti-LGBTQ+ agenda affects more than queer people. Democrats must reckon with this reality in order to defend both LGBTQ+ rights and the social institutions like education that are core to our democracy.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 37 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMRep. Sam Park on Marjorie Taylor Greene: Bless her heartIf Marjorie Taylor Greene the self-absorbed, fingers-on-a-chalkboard MAGA gremlin and U.S. representative from Georgia had an opposite number outside her bizarro world of election-denying conspiracy theorists and Trump-deranged pillow hucksters, it might be Georgia state Rep. Sam Park (D).Park, 39, was elected to his first term the same night Donald Trump was elected to his, a surreal experience, Park says, that had half his staff celebrating his win and the other half in tears over Trumps ascendency. That dynamic has been at play in one form or another over the last eight years as Park has navigated wins and losses in the Georgia House of Representatives, lately as Minority Whip of the Democratic Caucus, and suffered, like the rest of the country and Democrats in Georgia, the misanthropy of the MAGA king and his disciples like Greene.Park is everything theyre not: kind, thoughtful, self-aware, a team player and Korean: hes the good son of first-generation immigrants. Subscribe to our Newsletter today On a clear, sunny day just before launching a neighborhood canvass from his home on the east side of Atlanta, Park was monitoring the progress of Hurricane Milton following a heavy hit in southeastern Georgia from Hurricane Helene just weeks before. We got lucky and avoided the worst of both storms, Park said, so far.LGBTQ Nation: Georgia became a majority-minority state in 2022, one of two swing states with that distinction in 2024, along with Nevada. Your district is majority-minority, as well. What part does that play for Georgia in the election this year, and from where you sit, how threatened does the white majority in the General Assembly feel?Rep. Sam Park: Its a critical aspect. It is generational change driving demographic change thats driving political change in Georgia. Thats certainly been my experience as a Georgia native, but also as someone whos been in politics for the past eight years as an elected official. In terms of how threatened the current majority is, they are very much threatened, and we saw that through redistricting efforts at the congressional, state, and local level. They drew racially discriminatory maps that were struck down by a federal court that then had to be remedied by drawing five additional majority Black seats in the State House, I think one additional majority Black district in the Congress, and two for the State Senate. They did so by essentially engaging in partisan gerrymandering, which is why our congressional delegation remains 9/5, despite us being a 50/50 state.Youre the grandson of refugees from the Korean War and the son of Korean immigrants to the United States. Whats one stereotype about Koreans thats true?(Laughing) We have good skincare products!Youre the first openly gay man elected to the Georgia State Legislature. What was the worst reaction from any one of your new colleagues?I mean, Id say the worst reaction would have been just voting for anti-LGBTQ pieces of legislation. Whats your role been in arguing against those? How are you making the case among your straight colleagues?I mean, as the whip, its critically important for me to educate and inform my members as to how a bill like that would harm my community our community and whip their vote to make sure that they vote the right way.Did your arrival have any overtly positive impact? Yes, without a doubt I think it did. In 2016, Republicans passed religious liberty legislation that would have permitted state-sanctioned discrimination against the LGBTQ community. The Republican governor vetoed that bill. At the same time, I unseated a three-term Republican chairwoman in 2016, which no one really expected, and I think it demonstrated to both Democratic and Republican colleagues that Georgia voters were perfectly fine with electing an openly gay person. And for about six years, we did not pass a single anti-LGBTQ bill, until last year, when they passed legislation banning gender-affirming care. As whip, I think I lost one or two Democratic members on that bill.Theyve also seen Ive been able to help grow our House Democratic Caucus, such that we are hopefully going to be within striking distance of flipping the chamber outright in two to four years. As a first-time candidate, you challenged and unseated the three-term incumbent by a two-point margin. You beat her by 18 in a rematch two years later. In the last election you buried another opponent by 36 points, but hes coming after you again this year. Could you possibly double your margin again and beat him by 72?(Laughing) I would love to, but that is unlikely, and this speaks to Republican gerrymandering efforts. For the past three election cycles, this one included, Ive had a new district. In 2022 they drew my family out of my district, thinking that I still live with family. This year, they drew me in with another Democrat. That Democrat decided not to run against me because he thought I would have a greater impact than he would. Hes also a friend, a pastor, does a lot of great work in the community. So, Im in a more leaning Republican district this cycle than I was in 2022.You won your first race in 2016 the same night that Donald Trump won his. What went through your mind? It was surreal, like, what was happening? Half my team was crying. Half my team was celebrating. I think we wrapped up festivities a little sooner than expected, just because it was such a shocker for everyone that Trump ended up winning that night.Youre in your fourth term as a rep. Whats something that youve learned as a veteran legislator that you wish youd known in your first term?In politics, you have to know how to take a punch and you have to be able to throw a punch. Politics is a contact sport. You grew up in a household with a mom and two sisters. What role did you play in that family structure, and what was a typical evening at home for the four of you?(Laughing) Probably being told to do the dishes or take out the trash. Im the youngest. Im the baby. I was raised by three strong women and I did my best to be a good brother and a good son.Youve said your mom ensured that you and your sisters attended church every Sunday. What part does faith play in your role as a legislator? My faith is a critical part of informing my views and perspectives on serving my constituents, on serving my neighbors, on seeing a stranger as if they are a neighbor, right? And so it certainly grounds me in terms of my moral compass, but also compels me to serve to the best of my capacity and to demonstrate as much love as I can for my fellow neighbor. Youve changed churches since you were a kid. Where did you start, and where did you end up?My mom was an organist and a church pianist, so as a kid, I would go to maybe, like, three different churches every Sunday, maybe one or two Korean churches, and then primarily we went to First Baptist Church of Atlanta. And then that kind of evolved, and right now I go to Gwinnett Church, which is a sister Church of North Point Community Church.Did you hear any anti-LGBTQ rhetoric as a kid in a Baptist church, and what effect did that have on you? I certainly heard some fire and brimstone growing up a Baptist. But even First Baptist Church of Atlanta back then, they certainly were not like a Westboro Baptist Church-type of environment. But it was, Homosexuality is certainly a sin, which made things very difficult growing up in a conservative religious household.Ive always been fascinated by the success that Christianity experienced in Korea. Among those who practice a faith there today, about a third identify as Buddhist. Do you have any interest in religions that predate the arrival of Christianity in Korea?Absolutely. What form does that take? Its more a matter of spirituality, you know, the metaphysical. Its important for everyone, in my opinion, to try and discover their purpose, asking the big questions. What is the purpose of life, the meaning of life? What is my purpose in it? I think all those questions are critically important. It goes back to that saying, The unexamined life is one not worth living. I think all different sorts of religious thoughts and ideation and philosophies for me are always something of interest that Im always open to exploring and considering. After you graduated high school, you helped your mom open and manage a small family business. What was it, and what did you learn through the experience about your constituents whove started small businesses themselves? It was a check-cashing business. Learned a lot of Spanish, as that was a large part of our customer base at the time. You know, small businesses are difficult, but also the bedrock of our economy. Part of that is the American dream of having the opportunity to start your own small business, to have the means to take care of your family. So that experience certainly taught me both the importance of small businesses and facilitating social mobility, but also just the reality that, especially immigrant communities, we are hard-working people, right? Whether you come from Asia, whether you come from Latin America, Central America, immigrants are hard workers and critical members of our community.By the end of the last general assembly session in March, legislators failed to pass any of the more than 20 anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced over the last year. Two unrelated bills, hijacked by MAGA lawmakers at the last minute and stuffed with anti-LGBTQ+ amendments, also failed. Is the MAGA fever breaking in Georgia, and is that a leading indicator for Donald Trumps chances in the swing state?Great question. Its interesting, because I think the State Senate is more MAGA, and I dont see that breaking, certainly not this year. There were a lot of far-right pieces of legislation coming out of the State Senate, which is not at all competitive. Republicans will likely maintain control of that body the rest of this decade, and so theyre primarily focused on their base in order for them to maintain power, as the only political competition that they would face would be in their Republican primaries. On the House side, Id say you dont see as much MAGA. MAGA is a smaller faction there because the numbers are closer and the battlegrounds for a lot of these competitive state House districts lie in the suburbs in which you have more of a moderate, highly educated voting population. The suburbs for this election cycle will remain battleground areas in the state, and more likely than not will be the determining factor as to whether or not Georgia goes for Kamala or for Trump. What is the single most important thing the world should do to address climate crisis? We have to accelerate our transition to renewable energy. Renewable, sustainable energy is critical. In Georgia, that looks like the electrification of the transportation grid, movement toward EVs, not just with respect to manufacturing, but also when it comes to use, for buses, for micro-transit initiatives. And then we also have Plant Vogtle, the first nuclear power plant constructed in the United States in at least 30 years, which creates carbon-free energy for the next 30 to 50 years. So, on one hand, were trying to accelerate toward renewable energy. On the other hand, were also trying to expand access to clean energy. One of your priorities in the House is educational opportunities for the next generation. What would you support national mandatory service for young people in the military, or some other form of public service of their choosing, like the Peace Corps or Teach for America?Id be open to that. Im very wary of mandates. I think if you incentivize to a certain degree, in which a majority of young people engage in some form of public service, I think that would be preferred, as opposed to a mandatory enrollment in some sort of program. What do you think the benefits would be for young people? An understanding that were in this together a sense of community that should also inform their sense of identity as an American.Outside the legislature, you serve as General Counsel for Positive Impact Health Centers, a nonprofit working to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Georgia. With the advent of PrEP and other tools in the arsenal in the fight against HIV and AIDS, how close are we to ending the epidemic? We have a long way to go. In Georgia, theres an estimated 20,000 people living with HIV who are out of care right now. At Positive Impact Health Centers we serve about ten to 15,000 people living with HIV, and we have some of the highest viral suppression rates in the nation, so the nonprofit does just such incredible work. We remain very much focused on 1) trying to get as many people into care, and then 2) trying to expand access to PrEP around the state. One of the big challenges that weve seen in Georgia is the lack of Medicaid expansion, which would cover a good chunk of the 20,000 people living with HIV who are out of care. Why has Medicaid expansion been blocked in Georgia?Politics. Back in 2014, Georgia was one of the few states that made it more difficult to expand Medicaid. It took away the power from the governor and gave it to a Republican-dominated legislature based on gerrymandered maps. Their opposition to Medicaid, as far as I can glean, is more political as opposed to policy, right? Medicaid expansion was a part of Obamacare, and Obamacare was so politicized and demonized for the past ten years that Republicans have essentially ended up shooting themselves in the foot by harming themselves and their constituents by refusing to proceed with common sense policy like expanding Medicaid.Earlier in your political career, you worked in different capacities with a superstar roster of political talent, including Congressman Jamie Raskin, and Georgias Stacey Abrams, U.S. Senator John Ossoff, and Jason Carter, Jimmy Carters grandson. Whats one thing from all one or all of them that youve learned along the way?Leadership is about service. Its not about you. Its about helping as many people around you as you possibly can. Thats what good leadership is. How has that manifested itself in your career?Certainly, it speaks to the notion of, if you want to go far, you have to go together, as opposed to, if you wanted to go fast, you go alone, right? If I wanted to run for higher office or get more attention, or have a higher title, theres certainly things I would not have done, as opposed to doing everything I can over the past few years, certainly in the House, to serve and support each of my members to be the best that they can for their constituents, right? And so if anything, its kind of that servant-leader model that I think has been most conducive strategically, moving the caucus toward a majority and breaking through the Republican trifecta. Is flipping the House inevitable given the demographic shifts in the state? No. Demographics are not destiny. Demographics provide opportunity, but we still have to do the work of talking to voters and building a coalition based on common ground. You posted a pic on social yesterday dressed in shorts and a Stand with Sam t-shirt, which looks cool, and revealed some pretty serious guns. Whats your workout routine and how social are you at the gym?(Laughing) So I stopped going to the gym during the pandemic, and I try to go back, but for the most part, I just work out from home. Weights, yoga, jogging, hiking. I do try to exercise at least 30 minutes to an hour every day as a part of just good habits and all that good stuff.Where do you socialize?I dont do too much socializing. I think I need to work a little bit more on that (laughing). I get tunnel vision. So, like, when were in election season, like right now, its just do everything possible to turn out the vote for Kamala Harris. Are you seeing anyone now? Im currently single, so Im open. (Laughing) Looking for dates.Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is probably the most famous politician out of Georgia right now. Outside of her addiction to attention-seeking and slavish devotion to Donald Trump, how effective is she as a representative for her constituents, and whats one nice thing you can say about her?Oh, thats a tough question. I say, bless her heart. You know, she has the right to think what she wants. Shes entitled to her opinion, but not the facts.Whats the one thing you enjoy most about serving the constituents of Georgia House District 107?Its an opportunity to do as much good as I can with the opportunities that Ive been given.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 36 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMMoscow police detained over 50 people in raid on LGBTQ+ venuesPolice in Moscow raided two gay clubs last weekend, detaining over 50 people, in what Novaya Gazeta Europe described as the continued escalation of the Russian governments crackdown on the LGBTQ+ community.Photos and video from the raids was posted on pro-Russia Telegram channels MSK1 and SHOT on October 12 showing masked police storming into downtown Moscow club Central Station, forcing shouting at patrons and forcing them to lie on the ground. One clip shows officers searching people, with one cop violently kicking a detainees leg. Related Russian bar employees arrested for promoting LGBTQ+ extremism Drag performers were stripped as their outfits were confiscated by authorities. Novaya Gazeta Europe reports that the club was holding a Friday, October 11, event marking National Coming Out Day. Police stormed the venue at around 1 a.m. on Saturday morning under the pretext of fighting drug trafficking. A photo on MSK1 and a video on SHOT show one clubgoer who appears to have been forced to empty their bag, the contents laid out on the floor. Subscribe to our Newsletter today According to Novaya Gazeta, about 200 people were at Central Station at the time of the raid. Its unclear where the more than 50 people taken into custody were being detained.Police also raided another popular central Moscow LGBTQ+ venue, Three Monkeys, which is reportedly managed by the same owners as Central Station. The raids follow what one post on SHOT reportedly described as civilian complaints. An October 7 post on the channel included photos and video of drag performers at Three Monkeys, with Moscow locals reportedly complaining of all sorts of naughty things and Half-naked men dressed as women dance around the stage, and the guy guests [kissing] each other freely. The same day, another pro-Russia Telegram channel posted video of drag shows at Central Station in which performers allegedly mocked the countrys invasion of Ukraine. The channel wrote that the venue, along with Three Monkeys, should be shut down for discrediting the Russian army, according to Novaya Gazeta. As the outlet noted, last weekends raids are just the latest in Russias continued crackdown on the LGBTQ+ community. Since the countrys Supreme Court declared the international LGBT social movement an extremist organization last November, there have been multiple raids on LGBTQ+ bars and other establishments in cities across Russia, and multiple people have been arrested and charged under the countrys anti-LGBTQ+ laws. Following a similar raid on a nightclub in the city of Orenburg in March, the venues art director and administrator were both charged with being members of an extremist organization. The case was reportedly the first of its kind since the Russian Supreme Courts ruling. According to Novaya Gazeta, this is not the first time Central Station has been targeted. The venue was briefly forced to close in 2014 following violent attacks in the wake of Russias 2013 law banning so-called gay propaganda in the presence of children. The clubs St. Petersburg location was forced to close late last year.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 30 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMInternet goes wild as angry mother-to-be blames bakery for ruining gender revealA soon-to-be mother is going viral online for her video in which she called out a bakery for allegedly ruining her gender reveal surprise by telling her what color was inside her cake.In the video, TikTok user morbidmama7, who is called Ariel in the video, plays a voicemail message left for her by an unnamed bakery about a problem with her cake order as she makes faces. She says that she asked for a cake that would have a raspberry filling if shes having a child who will be assigned female at birth and a blackberry filling if shes having a child who will be assigned male at birth. Related Parents are openly grieving the sex of their babies. What fuels gender disappointment? LGBTQ+ parents may feel especially pressured to embrace any sex. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMWhy do Democratic candidates get so defensive about trans issues?Saddled with a felon for their presidential nominee and with no platform to run on other than Donald Trumps dementia-tinged ramblings, Republicans are reaching back 2o years for their tried-and-true campaign strategy: when in doubt, attack the LGBTQ+ community. Back in 2004, it was an assault on the idea of marriage equality. This year, its a heavily financed ad blitz against trans rights. From attacks on trans student-athletes to efforts to restrict gender-affirming health care, Republicans have decided that exploiting the culture war playbook is their best chance to win voters over. Related Trump has spent over $19 million on anti-trans ads even though they turn off voters It turns out more voters care about these other issues Unfortunately, Democrats often assume a defensive crouch and grant Republicans the field before the argument even starts. That was on display last week, when both Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio and would-be Senator Colin Allred of Texas responded by agreeing with attacks on trans athletes. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Brown is being pilloried in ads funded by a GOP PAC that claim Brown voted multiple times to allow transgender biological males in womens sports and supported allowing minor children to receive sex change surgeries. Brown responded with his own ad, not in support of trans rights, but instead noting the state already bans trans girls from competing. The ad even echoed the offensive line about biological males in sports. Allred similarly made a point of throwing trans athletes under the bus. In response to ads from his opponent, the odious incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz, Allred uses language that would do the GOP proud. I dont want boys playing girls sports, Allred says in a new ad.As a congressman, Allred has a record of support for LGBTQ+ rights, including voting against the offensive Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023. That bill was an example of the kind of over-the-top posturing that makes voters despise Congress for not addressing real issues. But thats not what Allred said. Moreover, both he and Brown recycled the GOP talking point that trans students are actually boys in disguise, language that not only perpetuates lies about trans athletes but puts them at risk for violence. When Democrats come under attack for being too liberal, their immediate response is to fold. When Republicans come under attack for being too conservative, their immediate response is to double down. Why cant the Democrats learn from the Republicans on this one point? The attack on trans rights is an opening to go after the GOP for extending their efforts to control every part of citizens lives. The GOP wants to tell women what do with their bodies, but it doesnt stop there. They want to tell parents what to do with their kids bodies. Its as if the GOP wants to be in every exam room which, in fact, they do. In schools, do you want a senator telling you who gets to play on the high school soccer team? Because it doesnt stop there. Republicans will tell you what your child can read. They will dictate what teachers can teach. Given the chance, they would probably want to decide who gets to play the glockenspiel in the school band. Even if you dont want to directly defend trans rights for fear of offending a more conservative electorate, there are plenty of ways to turn the argument around and make it about the GOP playing Big Brother. It would be nice if Democrats would lose the defensive crouch and instead go on the offense whenever someone tries to tar them as too friendly with the LGBTQ+ community. The fact of the matter is, most people dont care about trans rights as a political issue. The people who care the most are not likely to be voting for Democrats in the first place. Candidates cant let attacks go unanswered, of course. But there are ways of doing so that dont betray some basic principles. One of them isnt to cede ground to your opponent. The other is to do your best to protect your supporters. That isnt always easy. But at least you have to try. Last week, it didnt look like they were trying all that hard.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 26 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMHow should Democrats respond to the GOPs anti-trans attacks?Republicans have spent tens of millions on transphobic political ads and used anti-trans attack lines during debates. Democrats responses have been varied.Democratic vice presidential nominee, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, recently defended trans people and slammed Republicans for demonizing them. Vice President Kamala Harris has responded by saying she would continue to enforce federal laws protecting trans people from discrimination. However, two congressional candidates have recently released ads responding more negatively to anti-trans attacks against them. Senate candidate Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX) released an ad saying, I dont want boys playing girls sports. Sen. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMMike Johnson has angry outburst when pressed on Donald Trumps bizarre penis commentsSpeaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) an evangelical Christian who has his teen son monitor his internet usage to keep himself from viewing adult content online got visibly miffed on CNN this weekend when a journalist tried to get him to explain Donald Trumps bizarre comments about a golfers penis.Dont say it again, Johnson snapped at CNNs Jake Tapper on State of the Union yesterday. We dont have to say it! Related Mike Johnson speaks alongside pastor who says demons started Pride month at hate groups summit The pastor said the Stonewall Riots opened a portal to another realm, allowing a pagan god to come back to Earth and cause a sexual revolution. At issue were comments Trump made at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday during one of his rambling sessions where he discussed late pro golfer Arnold Palmer at length before discussing the size of his genitalia. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. But this guy, this guy, this is a guy that was all man. This man was strong and tough. And I refuse to say it, Trump said before he just said it, but when he took showers with the other pros, they came out of there, they said, Oh my god, thats unbelievable.I had to say it. I had to say it. We have women that are highly sophisticated here, but they used to look at Arnold. And I had to tell you the shower part of it, because its true. What can I tell you? We want to be upfront, we want to be honest. OMFG "When he took showers with the other pros, they came out of there, they said 'oh my god. That's unbelievable" Trump says that when other golfers showered with Arnold Palmer they would marvel at how big his dick is pic.twitter.com/kVypi7Uzr6 Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) October 19, 2024On Sunday, Tapper brought up the comments while interviewing Johnson. By then, clips of Trumps comments about Palmer had already gone viral on social media. Donald Trumps campaign suggested he would begin previewing his closing argument Saturday night with Election Day barely two weeks away, Tapper said. But the former president kicked off his rally with a detailed story about Arnold Palmer, at one point even praising the late, legendary golfers genitalia. Is this really the closing message you want voters to hear from Donald Trump? Stories about Arnold Palmers penis?Johnson did not want to talk about Trumps comments but was also unwilling to criticize Trump for making it a part of the election news cycle. So he instead attacked Vice President Kamala Harris: I think that the headline that I read about the rally in Pennsylvania yesterday was the big question, and its the one that Kamala Harris has not been able or willing to answer. And that is, are you better off now than you were under the Trump administration four years ago? Tapper responded by pointing out that if President Joe Biden had made similar comments to Trump, Johnson would be on this show right now saying you were shocked and appalled, and you would suggest it was evidence of his cognitive decline. Tapper brought up a New York Times article that compared Trumps speeches from 2015 to this year and noted that his rhetoric has changed and that he has gotten angrier, less focused, more profane, and increasingly fixated on the past. Why is he talking about Arnold Palmers penis in front of Pennsylvania voters? Tapper asked.Jake, you seem to like that line a lot, Johnson replied and forced a chuckle, even though he didnt seem to find the discussion amusing at all. Let me tell you that Donald Trump is doing rallies around the country to say something. The two talked over one another, arguing about whether people should be discussing Trumps comments on Palmer, and Johnson tried to end the argument by saying hell address it. Tapper stopped talking and let Johnson address it. Dont say it again, Johnson said. I get it, theres lines in a rally when President Trump is at a rally, sometimes hell speak for two straight hours. Youre questioning his stamina? His mental acuity? Joe Biden couldnt do that for five minutes! He said that Biden couldnt get as many people to go to his rallies if he were holding them and said that Tapper can cherry pick, you know, a few words or lines out of a two-hour event and claimed that the same could be done with Harris rallies because she does word salads and she couldnt, she couldnt hold court like that without a teleprompter.Tapper then brought up Trumps statements that he would use the military and the national guard to imprison leftists. Johnson lied and said that Trump was talking about gangs and Tapper said, Nope, and played another clip where Trump named Democrats he wanted to imprison, including Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Arnold Palmers daughter, Peggy Palmer, criticized Trump for his comments.I thought it was an unfortunate way to remember my dad, she told The Independent. My father was very modest. Weve lost our sense of outrage in this country over just about everything, and Im not sure thats OK There are other things about my dad that would be better to focus on.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 29 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMMaking history while reporting it: a legendary journalists crusade against AIDSI clipped Randy Shilts obituary from theSt. Louis Post-Dispatchand carefully placed it inside my copy of And The Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic his most famous, most successful book. At 42 and at the peak of his intellectual, creative, and cultural power, Shilts had died of the disease he chronicled. It was February 1994.I didnt read Band when it came out because I wasnt out myself in 1987. When I read it in 1991, I became frustrated and scared to discover the missed opportunities, government inaction, and scientific infighting that defined the early history of the AIDS epidemic. The book also convinced me that everyone had to do something in the war against HIV, so in part because of Shilts, I volunteered in 1992 for an AIDS vaccine clinical trial at Saint Louis University. Related Donald Trumps trans panic could cost lives. Just look at the Lavender Scare. This isnt the first time Americans have witnessed the impact rumors and innuendos can have on entire communities. Shilts last book was a treatment of another epidemic the institutional homophobia that was cutting its way through the lives of everyday Americans and across the United States armed forces. He was in the dying stage of his short life when he wrote Conduct Unbecoming: Lesbians and Gays in the U.S. Military. As in his previous two books, Shilts collected assorted threads and wove together a nearly 800-page record, this time about American homosexuals under arms, from the Revolutionary War to Dont Ask Dont Tell. With these three books, Shilts was an important presence in my life in the 1990s, but I hadnt thought much about him in the years since. With the publication of a new biography, When the Band Played On: The Life of Randy Shilts, Americas Trailblazing Journalist, he came rushing back telling his story; arguing his case; making his points; enduring praise and criticism; and being analyzed, evaluated, exposed, and defined with a fresh, objective perspective that is only accessible three decades after ones burial and after the heated arguments of ones time have faded into cooled memories.Born the third of six boys in 1951, Shilts was raised in a destabilized home in suburban Chicago with an alcoholic mother and a struggling working-class father. While living in Oregon at 21, he self-analyzed to an understanding that he was indeed a gay man. In the year he turned 30, he became the first openly gay reporter at the San Francisco Chronicle, the perch from which he observed the world for the rest of his life, gaining national fame. The biography is meticulously researched and well-sourced, containing dozens of interviews with Shilts family, friends, colleagues, ex-boyfriends, and flings. It also offers full access to Shilts journals, providing an intimate portrait (sometimes too intimate, perhaps) of his Shakespearean strut for an hour upon the stage. The biographys author, Minnesotan Michael G. Lee, is an adjunct professor, a steady-handed writer, and a Ph.D. in social work who has labored in HIV/AIDS, health causes, and community agencies for over twenty years. Hes a serious student who researched the life and times of Randy Shilts for over a decade before publishing this biography. When the Band Played On recalls the arguments of Shilts wild, exceptional life and offers forgotten and new details about the lingering questions: What was the Patient Zero controversy? Why did some in Randy Shiltss own community call him a gay Uncle Tom? Was he an arrogant prick? Did he ever find true love? What motivated him? What brought him to tears? Why was he so driven? WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTrump supporter says Kamala Harris will meet her maker: This is a mans country!A supporter outside of GOP candidate Donald Trumps town hall event in Pennsylvania said that Vice President Kamala Harris will meet her maker if she cant be a better Christian, saying that Trump is needed in the White House because this is a mans country. Were here to represent America, the supporter, who identified himself as Andrew, told a reporter from the conservative Right Side Broadcasting Network (RSBN). Were here to represent the truth, Jesus Christ, and were here to represent what Americas all about: freedom. Related Trump has spent over $19 million on anti-trans ads even though they turn off voters It turns out more voters care about these other issues He said he believes Harris doesnt care about freedom and that he doesnt think anybody that is a part of the far left or Democratic party is for the betterment of this country or this state. They dont want anything to do with God, they dont want anything to do with humanity and the people that are the backbone of this country. The reporter then asked about Harriss now-viral clapback to a group of hecklers at one of her rallies. While the vice president spoke about reproductive rights, the hecklers yelled, Jesus is Lord, Lies! and Christ is King, as they were escorted out of the venue. Harris replied, Oh, you guys are at the wrong rally. She then added a dig at Trumps crowd sizes, No, I think you meant to go to the smaller one down the street. The crowd erupted in cheers. Andrew shared his thoughts on the moment: I think she better get on her hands and her knees and start crying out to the one and true living God, cause if not, shes gonna meet her maker real quick. The RSBN reporter then claimed Harris alienated two-thirds of the country with her comments because the United States is a majority-Christian nation. Andrew replied by calling Harris one of the dumbest women that could ever run before asserting that women dont belong in positions of power. This is a mans world. This is a mans country. This country is supposed to be run like a business, and that is why Donald Trump is the one that we need at this moment America needs to come back to its true moral values and true Christian faith. Religion does, in fact, play a role in Harriss life. She is a Baptist but also was influenced by Hinduism growing up, and her husband, Doug Emhoff, is Jewish. I dont know that weve had another president who is this religiously diverse and who has had that kind of experience, Nathan Finn, senior fellow on religious liberty with the Southern Baptist Conventions Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, told Deseret News. Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, president ofInterfaith Alliance, agreed. I dont think weve ever before had a candidate who has navigated various religious spaces and celebrated those various spaces in such an intimate way as the vice president. Shes coming from a background where one parent is from the Hindu tradition and one parent is Christian from the Caribbean. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMA school board member compared the Pride flag to the swastika. She was relieved of her duties.A Catholic school board trustee tried to ban the Pride flag after comparing it to the Nazi swastika a second time and got kicked off the board in the process. The Niagara Catholic District School Board in Ontario censured Natalia Benoit in January after an independent investigator agreed she breached the boards code of conduct by making the hateful comparison. She was relieved of her duties and barred from attending board meetings for six months. Catholic schools in Ontario get public funds. Related Judge smacks down dads demand to hang straight pride flags in kids classrooms Nathan Feldman also sought $3 million in damages for alleged discrimination his children faced for not being allowed to hang the flags. Just weeks after returning, Benoit again introduced a proposal to amend the flag-flying protocol to exclude the Pride flag, which would bar schools and offices from displaying the inclusive standard. More than 15,000 LGBTQ+ individuals were interred in concentration camps, according to the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. The report investigating Benoits actions described the Nazi flag as a distinctly recognizable symbol of Nazi propaganda, and the Nazi regime was characterized by its pursuit of racial purity pursued through policies designed to exterminate Jews and other minorities including homosexuals by mass murder, among other means. The Pride flag, by contrast, is one which always reflects in essence a rainbow and is born out of an intention to include persons historically marginalized in society. Benoit was unrepentant after the report was issued. There is no comparison of flags, she wrote. It is a statement that no flags should be flown which would cause conflict and controversy in our schools. Alleging the comparison was only spreading lies provoking a hostile environment. The board began flying the Pride flag at its high schools in 2021 and at elementary schools in 2022. Board chair Danny Di Lorenzo said that despite Benoits provocation, he hadnt received many complaints about flying the flag. I got some negative, some positive comments, he explained, adding its generally accepted within Ontarios Catholic schools. The New Testament has many stories of Christ himself reaching out to those who are marginalized, Director of Education Camillo Ciprianotold CBC last week. After discussions with several priests and the local diocese, he said, I will continue to fly it as long as it remains my decision.I think that its a sign of inclusion, a sign of acceptancenot a sign of promotion, board chair Di Lorenzo said. The Bible also says acceptance of others and that Jesus accepts everyone. I think thats where we have to stop and reflect on the Bible We do have a loving God and we do have an accepting God.Benoits resurrected proposal goes to a vote before the board on Tuesday.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 37 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.PRIDE.COMCONFIRMED this historic villain was really 'Agatha All Along' & now we can't stop singingAgatha Harkness' capacity for evil seemingly knows no bounds. In the latest episode of Agatha All Along, it was revealed that Harkness was a part of some of the worst moments in history: the 1937 Hindenburg disaster, the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, and that time a radiant red-headed woman dared to flirt with Dolly Parton's husband.Yes, that's right, Agatha Harkness is the eponymous Jolene.See on InstagramDuring the latest episode of the miniseries, "Familiar by Thy Side", a flashback shows Joe Locke's character "Teen" (AKA Billy Kaplan, AKA Wiccan) researching Agatha Harkness's vast history. It spans centuries going as far back as the 1690s, when Harkness avoided being killed during the Salem Witch Trials. There's also a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment where we get a glimpse at an internet post archiving a newspaper article reading "Does this 1972 Surveillance Photo of Dolly Parton Show The Real Jolene?" Underneath are two copies of the photo, showing Parton slapping Agatha "Jolene" Harkness square across the face.In an interview for The Wrap, Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer was asked to officially confirm whether or not Harkness really was the infamous "Jolene." She responded with a laugh, saying, "In the MCU, hell yeah."See on InstagramA follow up question was asked about how the writers decided when and where Harkness would show up throughout time, and Shaeffer explained the process. She said that he likes to assign the writers homework, one assignment being to, "Give me five low-level, nefarious things that Agatha has done in her deep past."Neither the Hindenburg or the Titanic would be described as "low-level", and frankly trying to steal Dolly Parton's man doesn't either! The cheek, the nerve, the gall, the audacity, and the gumption! Shaeffer credited writer Laura Donney for the idea and described when she pitched it to the team."That was a Laura Donney idea. And it was one of, I remember being one of the most fun days in the room, was everybody coming in with their sort of low-level Agatha nasties. And that was Laura Donney. She was like, 'Shes Jolene.' And we were just like, everybody fell out. It was so funny."0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 43 Views 0 Vista previa

I sign autographs for every single one of them.Once Elvira wrapped up her autographs and photos, she said she asked Grande if they could also have a photo, to which Grande allegedly responded, No, I dont really do that.See on InstagramAfter an audible gasp and boos from the audience, Elvira added that Grande also added salt to the wound by leaving the show before it started -- though her 20 guests stayed behind to enjoy it. All of this was in response to the dads question about how Trump would help Bronx public schools perform better the dad didnt mention trans kids at all.Could you imagine without parental consent? At first, what I was told that was actually happening, I said, you know, its an exaggeration. No. It happens! It happens in areas where it happens. You know, in Washington, I dont know if you ever noticed that you got Department of Education, Department of Education.
