Lovett says Jefferson City is mired in dysfunction. While his CV may sound dry, the married girl dad brings passion rooted in Midwest values like hard work, devotion to family, and humility to both his long list of civic contributions and his candidacy. He can still rattle off the Boy Scouts creed in seconds flat.Lovett spoke from his home office in Ballwin, a suburb on the west side of St. Louis, in the same house where he listened to and learned from his grandfathers stories of fighting the good fight. LGBTQ Nation: You lost your race for the same seat youre running for two years ago against the same candidate, Rep. Philip Oehlerking, by less than 200 votes. Whats changed between then and now, and why do you think youre going to prevail in the rematch?Colin Lovett: Last time around, I was a first-time candidate, so you dont know what you dont know. Youre drinking from the fire hose, trying to learn how to be a good candidate. Youre building name recognition and ID throughout the district. A lot of the people that are voting have never heard your name. So we spent a ton of time and effort in that first cycle getting our name out there and making the introduction of who am I and why am I good for the district. We came that close, and weve basically not stopped campaigning since then.I come from the Harvey Milk school of politics of run, and if you dont succeed, run, and then run again. This next iteration, its been so exciting, because now as we go door to door, people will say, Oh yeah, I remember you. I voted for you in 22, and Im voting for you again. Or when we get to tell them how close this race was, theyre shocked. I had no idea that this race was that close. And we get the opportunity to describe how consequential these state legislature races are. Were only three seats away from breaking the Republican supermajority in the House. It was six seats in 2022. Of 26,500 registered voters, there were 10,000 people that didnt cast a vote in 2022, at least for the state rep race. And we only lost by 181. Weve had a lot of success in educating our voters on those things. Were going to bring them home this time. You havent mentioned your opponent. What about his performance in the last couple of years? So about my opponent, one of the hallmarks of my campaign is we have really tried to do a good job at telling our voters what Im going to bring to the district and what I want to do, and not disparaging and striking him down. But I will say, he has a record now, and he is pretty extreme on the issues. He voted alongside the Republican super-majority to make it more difficult for ballot initiatives to pass, to restrict reproductive freedom, access to health care. Hes been a big proponent of privatizing public education in the state. Its disguised under parental rights and freedom, but theyre going to gut public education dollars to put them into private religious and parochial schools and charter schools.Missourians will be voting in November on a ballot initiative called Amendment 3, which would enshrine the right to abortion in Missouris constitution. Is Donald Trump right that everything is working out fine for women in the aftermath of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade?Absolutely not. Providers are so terrified of the draconian laws that have been put into effect that they wont provide the healthcare services women need, so people are forced to travel across state lines, and that leads to severe health complications up to and including death, and its just horrible. We need to make sure that we are giving people the freedom to make healthcare decisions about their own bodies, and that includes issues around pregnancy and healthcare around abortion, but also around our trans community and being able to make decisions about our bodies in that way, too. The government really just needs to stay the hell out of the way. Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley who memorably ran out of the Capitol on January 6 after fist-pumping to a crowd of election-denying protesters on his way in attended a rally a few weeks ago and conflated Amendment 3 with kids getting sex change operations in schools. Afterward, a spokesman confirmed that Hawley was making a false argument that reproductive health care encompasses transgender care. What do the tactics say about Hawleys character?I think at this point were starting to see Hawley, and not just him, but other candidates in our state, afraid that theyre going to lose their seats, and theyre going to say whatever they need to fear monger. And, yeah, its a complete lie. What are the details in Amendment 3 that hes making that connection with?Youll have to ask him.In July, a St. Louis circuit court judge slapped down the Republican Missouri Attorney General Andrew Baileys nefarious investigation into transgender childrens medicalrecords. Bailey claimed, based on false testimony provided by a notorious anti-trans activist, that Washington University in St. Louis systematically pressured or deceived parents and insurance providers into purchasing irreversible gender transition interventions. The implication was that the school and others associated with gender-affirming care are doing it for the money. With that road blocked, where do you think Baileys next battle will be in his culture war on trans people? If only I could predict the future, right? I mean, for one, I really would love to see our candidate for attorney general, Elad Gross, defeat Andrew Bailey and become an actually good attorney general, where we dont have these attacks lobbed on our trans kiddos and our trans community.I dont know where Baileys going to go next. I mean, there seems to be a lot of attempts to just completely antagonize the trans community in every way possible, from access to health care to being able to play sports in schools. What else could they go after? They could go after housing and public accommodations. I mean, there just seems to be an all-out war on the trans community. There was recently some excitement around a local gym and a person who identifies as trans not being able to use the facilities that they needed to. At the Department of Revenue, there was a form that you could access to be able to legally change your gender. All of a sudden, that form was gone from the website. It just seems like the leadership in the state, which right now is controlled by pretty extreme anti-trans people, are coming for whatever they can. Thats really not what Missourians are like. Its just what, unfortunately, we have elected in our leadership right now.Video just surfaced of failed anti-LGBTQ+ Missouri candidate for secretary of state Valentina Gomez dancing with the gays at a New Years Eve party last year in New York, to a DJ set from Drag Race alum Aquaria. She replied to one publication saying, its impossible to walk around New York City without running into a mentally ill f**got. Youre not a doctor, but how would you diagnose someone like Gomez?Well, in honor of it being Mean Girls Day, I would say she doesnt even go here (laughing). If you look at what the election results showed, she was widely unpopular, and its easy to get on camera and just shout a bunch of inflammatory nonsense, and she certainly got some attention, but the values of Missouri did not align with her candidacy. Maybe she should think about other things than running to serve the people of Missouri. Youre for low taxes, a balanced budget, Second Amendment rights, increased funding for police and religious freedom protections. How do you describe your politics, and have you ever voted Republican?I have never voted Republican, but if we really came down to a scenario where we had fascist leaders in the Democratic Party, I would consider voting for the right person rather than a party.I have an eight-year-old who is in public schools, and every time she goes to school, I worry about gun safety and school shootings. We need to enact some of the low-hanging fruit gun laws to be able to make our schools and public places safer. But were a Second Amendment state. We own guns. We like to be able to protect our households. In order to be pro-LGBTQ and equality, you dont have to be against balanced budgets and being smart with the money. We should be smart with our public tax dollars and try and keep taxes as low as possible while funding some of the critical public services that our government provides. Its really about having leadership there to be able to make those balanced, nuanced decisions and make sure that were being responsible, but also providing care and service to the people who need it the most. Thats one of the reasons government is there. You know, you can walk and chew gum at the same time.As you mentioned, the Missouri Legislature is overwhelmingly red, and theres probably zero chance either chamber will flip Democrat in this years election. One of your policy goals is pushing through the Missouri Non-Discrimination Act (MONA), which would bar discrimination in the state based on sexual orientation and gender identity and hasnt been taken up by Republicans. With little chance that bill and other legislation you support will pass, how do you view your role in Jefferson City if youre elected? When people are running for office, they have to align with their party on their messaging. Once you get elected and get into office, you find that you can work with those people. And I really look forward to using my ability to work with people from all walks of life, some that I agree with, some that I dont agree with on everything, to be able to make progress for Missourians. As it relates to MONA, you can be fired in Missouri for being gay or trans. You can be denied housing for those same reasons, too. MONA has been brought up in every legislative session since the year 2000 or 2001. In the last few years, weve gotten really close. The challenge is that if the Speaker of the House doesnt deem it to be something that can be taken up for a floor vote, it just dies. But weve progressively, throughout the years, gotten a little closer each time. Itll require a bipartisan effort and working together to make sure that we can get it teed up and across the finish line.I think its fair to call you super civically engaged. Youre running for office, youre president of your homeowners association, youve served on the boards of the LGBT Center of St. Louis and with the St. Louis Civic Orchestra and lots of other organizations. Who or what do you credit for your civic-mindedness? I caught the bug from my grandfather. He enlisted after Pearl Harbor was attacked, like, literally, the next day, and he was the head of the military police unit that guarded the Little Rock Nine in 1957 at Central High School. I was educated by him and his stories of fighting the good fight. The other thing Ill say about that is, for me, it was Harvey Milk. When I came out in my 20s, I was kind of oblivious to LGBT history. Then I saw the film Milk and I was just stunned at how much history there had been in our community, and I just threw myself into community service and jumped into every LGBT org that I could, to just do what I could to continue to fight. If youre not at the table, youre on the menu. We just saw that in the dog whistle from Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in the Dobbs decision. Its an important reminder that weve come a long way, but we cant take it for granted.I interview a lot of LGBTQ+ candidates and electeds and not all of them advertise their identity the way you do. In particular, candidates will be forthcoming about their gender and sexuality in conversation, and happily accept strategic support and an endorsement from groups like the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, but then its hard to find much evidence on the front door to their campaign their website that theyre a member of the same community. You, on the other hand, are front and center with your identity, with video of you and your husband walking your dogs through your neighborhood right on your splash page. Whats your calculation of the value of identity in your campaign, and why doesnt every LGBTQ+ candidate share it the way you do? I cant speak to everyone else and why they do or dont. I mean, its kind of like coming out. Everyone has to go through that journey on their own time and when its the most right for them. But to me, it was really important to be completely honest and transparent about that. Heres my family, heres my husband, heres our daughter. Its part of who I am.And so we put it on our literature. Its on my website. Its everywhere I go, and I dont lead with LGBT issues, but its ingrained in who I am as a person, and its certainly part of my history and advocacy and how I got involved. And it really goes back to that Harvey Milk thing, right? Come out, come out, wherever you are, and being present. And if they know us, they vote for us, 10 to one.Whats the single most important thing the world should do to address the climate crisis? Accept that its real. You were an Eagle Scout. What did membership in the Scouts teach you that youve brought to your public service and life in general, and is there a place for a single-sex group for kids like the Boy Scouts of America was when you were growing up in society today?Interesting question. Being an Eagle Scout, I think the first thing that always comes to mind for that is its like cheerful service with a smile, right? Its service to my community, doing the right thing. I mean, I could rattle off that a scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent (laughing). But its true, and you live those values, and you just incorporate it into what you do. I got to learn how to survive in the woods. That was certainly fun, all the way down to some Lord of the Flies situations (laughing), but, you know, trying not to burn down the woods. Those values shouldnt be exclusive to boys. The Girl Scouts equally have great leadership programs and skills, but theyre different organizations. I think that people who identify as male should be able to join Girl Scouts of America, and I think people who identify as females should be able to join formerly-known-as Boy Scouts of America. And everybody in between. Theyre just good programs. Would you support national mandatory service for young people in the military or some other form of public service of their choosing, like the Peace Corps or Teach for America?Maybe mandatory. Maybe not, but maybe incentivized. You know, its such a good experience and opportunity for people to serve their community. Ill be honest, I havent thought about it in depth, but maybe an exchange of service for benefit. That could be a start. Ill think about that. Youre a gun owner. Whats the gun and what do you use it for?We have guns to be able to protect our house if somebody breaks in. Ill just leave it at that. Dont break into my house. What can you tell us about your husband? How did you meet, and who proposed to whom?As so many couples do, we met online, and I proposed to him. It was funny, because I was planning on proposing in Florida, and he was on a work trip, so I was planning on bringing the ring down and all of that. Well, then come to find out his parents were also joining us on this trip, so I had to find a way to sneak away from the parents to be able to propose, and then I got in really big trouble because I didnt ask for permission ahead of time. But it was really great. We got the beachside proposal, and he said yes on the first ask.Donald Trump says hell be a dictator on day one if he wins the presidency a second time. Whats your plan for day one if you win your race in November? I will be making lots of phone calls. Unlike being President of the United States, being a state representative doesnt give me a lot of unilateral power. So its going to be understanding the makeup of the Missouri legislature, forging relationships with other state representatives and lawmakers to understand where we can make tangible progress, and finding the folks that I can work with to champion some of our legislative priorities and make sure we get stuff done. The last Missouri legislative session was one of the most dysfunctional, unproductive sessions that weve had to date, just because of all the infighting and the disagreement. I think we can be better than that. What are you most looking forward to if youre elected to represent the constituents of Missouri District 100?Yeah, I mean really, its doing the job.My goal goes back to that Boy Scout thing, right? Cheerful service with a smile doing whatever I can in the capacity of my office to be as good of a public servant as I can be. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMEU court bars Meta from using sexual orientation to target adsA European Union (EU) court has ruled that Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, cannot target users in the EU with ads based on public statements theyve made about their sexual orientation.Gay Austrian privacy activist Max Schrems brought the suit against the social media giant after nearly a decade of receiving ads that he believed targeted him due to his sexual orientation, arguing the company violated the EUs landmark General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which regulates how ones personal data can be used. Related These 5 LGBTQ+ business leaders are transforming the world These LGBTQ+ business leaders are making history and influencing how everyday people around the world live their daily lives. Schrems posited that company data shows it can figure out users sexualities from their online behavior even when they dont declare it on their profiles. He said Meta then tailor ads based on this information, a practice the company has denied doing, according to Wired. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The case was brought to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) after a lower Austrian court ruled that Meta had a right to target Schrems based on his sexuality since he spoke about it at a public event. CJEU ruled in opposition to the Austrian court. The fact that Mr. Maximilian Schrems has made a statement about his sexual orientation on the occasion of a public panel discussion does not authorize the operator of an online social network platform to process other data relating to his sexual orientation, obtained, as the case may be, outside that platform, with a view to aggregating and analyzing those data, in order to offer him personalized advertising, the ruling stated.Schrems acknowledged that the question of whether folks on a public stage can be targeted through data does not apply to that many people. Its a really, really niche problem, he told Wired. But the court also ruled that personal data cannot be aggregated, analyzed, and processed for the purposes of targeted advertising without restriction as to time and without distinction as to type of data.Matt Pollard, a spokesperson for Meta said the company will review the entire ruling when fully published. Meta takes privacy very seriously and has invested over 5 billion Euros to embed privacy at the heart of all of our products. Everyone using Facebook has access to a wide range of settings and tools that allow people to manage how we use their information, Pollard said.In a statement, Shrems lawyer Katharina Raabe-Stuppnig, explained, Meta has basically been building a huge data pool on users for 20 years now, and it is growing every day. However, EU law requires data minimization. Following this ruling, only a small part of Metas data pool will be allowed to be used for advertising even when users consent to ads.Schrems called his privacy issue with Meta just another one in the long list of violations they have. The walls are closing in, he said. The company has certainly found itself in hot water with LGBTQ+ users before. A report released earlier this year from LGBTQ+ media advocacy group GLAAD found that Meta has failed to enforce its policies against anti-transgender hate posts, including posts made by high-profile political influencers and media outlets.Additionally, some LGBTQ+ content creators on Meta have accused the company of limiting their posts reach because of Metas new restrictions on political content, including content involving politicians and queer social issues. As thetrillion-dollar companysrevenuessoar, Meta continues tolay offcritical trust and safety teams and increasingly relies onineffectiveAI systemsfor content moderation, GLAAD wrote in its report. Metas enforcement failures have promptedrepeatedrebukesandconcernfrom theOversight Board(the independent body that makes non-binding but precedent-setting content moderation rulings on Metas platforms). AsAxiosandThe Vergehave documented, some users find that their reports on harmful content are not reviewed at all.In 2023, a report from Media Matters for America found that Meta allowed anti-LGBTQ+ group Gays Against Groomers to spread hate speech and misinformation about LGBTQ+ people on its platforms in violation of the companys policies for over a year.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 33 Views 0 Reviews

Half the men decked themselves in stunning drag wearing elegant wigs and shimmering lam dresses, glittering fairy dust wafting their painted faces.A year before, activists demonstrated outside (and a few got inside) the APA conference held in San Francisco. As a result, conference organizers conceded to permit a panel to lead a discussion workshop at this years annual conference in DC under the title, Lifestyles of Nonpatient Homosexuals. The panelists included Dr. Franklin Kameny, Director of Mattachine DC; Barbara Gittings, Director of the Philadelphia office of Daughters of Bilitis; and Jack Baker, first out U.S. student body president at the University of Minnesota. In their capacity as official conference panelists, they were granted inside access to all proceedings, including admission to the annual Convocation of Fellows, in which all attendees were to hear U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark deliver the keynote address in the hotels over-the-top Regency Ballroom.Earlier in the week, some of us checked out the hotels layout. The day before, a comrade placed a wedge in a doorway coming from the Rock Creek Park woods into the hotel, where we gained access. All along, the panelists were to serve as our Trojan horses. After the Convocation was called to order and halfway through Clarks address, our insiders opened the doors, and in we poured, chanting, waving, and shouting. On stage, we witnessed a stunned Attorney General surrounded by similarly stunned and also upset APA officials. Seated in the front rows were elderly men who wore gold medals around their necks. When they saw us, they stood and began beating us with their medals while shouting, Get out of here. We dont want any more people like you here! Others yelled: Youre sick, youre sick you f**gots, you drag queens! Other psychiatrists stood up from their seats and attempted to push us physically from the hall. I was able to escape their grasp, and I sat locking arms with a contingent on the floor just beneath the stage.I then saw Franklin Kameny rush the stage and grab the microphone, his booming voice cracking through the pandemonium even after the technician cut the power. Psychiatry is the enemy incarnate, he yelled, the anger seemingly oozing from his pores. You may take this as a declaration of war against you!And this was, indeed, our intent: to declare war on the psychiatric profession for the atrocities, the colonization, the professional malpractice it had perpetrated over the preceding century in the name of science. It was war on the biological and psychological pathologizing of sexually and gender-transgressive people. Degenerates & psychopathsFrom the so-called Eugenics Movement of the mid-nineteenth century through the twentieth century CE and beyond, medical and psychological professions have often proposed and addressed, in starkly medical terms, the alleged deficiencies and mental diseases of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people.During what has come to be known as the Eugenics movement in science (coined by Francis Galton in England in 1883 from the Greek word meaning well born or of good origins or breeding and from which the socially constructed hierarchical concept of race was codified), some members of the scientific community viewed people attracted to their own sex as constituting a distinct biological or racial type those who could be distinguished from normal people through anatomical markers. For example, Dr. G. Frank Lydston, U. S. urologist, surgeon, and professor, delivered a lecture in 1889 at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Chicago in which he referred to homosexuals as sexual perverts who are physically abnormal. the unfortunate class of individuals who are characterized by perverted sexuality have been viewed in the light of their moral responsibility rather than as the victims of a physical and incidentally of a mental defect Even to the moralist there should be much satisfaction in the thought that a large class of sexual perverts are physically abnormal rather than morally leprous. Also, the American medical doctor, Allan McLane Hamilton, wrote in 1896 that the [female homosexual] is usually of a masculine type, or if she presented none of the characteristics of the male, was a subject of pelvic disorder, with scanty menstruation, and was more or less hysterical and insane. In 1921, physician Perry M. Lichtenstein wrote, A physical examination of [female homosexuals] will in practically every instance disclose an abnormally prominent clitoris. And from 1857 France, Ambroise Tardieu wrote, This degeneracy is evidenced in men who engage in same-sex eroticism by their underdeveloped, tapered penis resembling that of a dog, and a naturally smooth anus lacking in radial folds. In addition, rather than considering homosexuality, bisexuality, and gender nonconformity merely as emotional, gender, and sexual differences along a broad spectrum of human potential, some sectors of the medical and psychological communities forced pathologizing language onto people with same-sex and both-sex attractions, as well as on those who cross traditional constructions of gender identities and expression.Dr. Sigmund Freud, for example, saw homosexuality as a developmental disorder, a fixation at one of the intermediate pregenital stages. He believed this was caused, at least in part, by an incomplete resolution in males of the Oedipal complex. The Swiss physician, August Forel, wrote in 1905: The [sexual] excesses of female inverts exceed those of the male and this is their one thought night and day, almost without interruption. [Male inverts] feel the need for passive submission and occupy themselves with feminine pursuits. Nearly all [female and male] inverts are in a more or less marked degree psychopaths or neurotics.Educational opportunities for primarily middle-class women improved somewhat during the mid-19thcentury in the United States. Since women were often locked out of most institutions of higher learning, a number of womens colleges were founded, such as Mt. Holyoke College, Vassar, Smith College, Wellesley College, and Bryn Mawr. There were, however, many conservative critics who attacked this new trend, warning that educated women would be unfit to fill traditional roles in society, and others, like Dr. Edward Clarke, in 1873 warning that study would interfere with womens fertility, causing them chronic uterine disease. Dr. Havelock Ellis concluded, Womens colleges are the great breeding ground of lesbianism. When young women are thrown together, they manifest an increasing affection by the usual tokens. They kiss each other fondly on every occasion They learn the pleasure of direct contactand after this, the normal sex act fails to satisfy them. Ellis posited that female homosexuality was increasing because of the rise of feminism, which taught women to be independent of men.All of this has resulted in members of the medical professions committing LGBTQ+ people often against their will to hospitals, mental institutions, jails and penitentiaries, as well as performing forced pre-frontal lobotomies, electroshock, castration, and sterilization. We have been made to endure aversion therapy, reparative therapy, Christian counseling, and genetic counseling. The physician Irving Bieber co-authored a study in 1962, Homosexuality: A Psychoanalytic Study of Male Homosexuals sponsored by the New York Society of Psychoanalysts, in which he concluded that homosexuality constituted a psychopathology that could be cured or prevented with psychoanalysis.Bieber then told the New York Times in 1973, A homosexual is a person whose heterosexual function is crippled, like the legs of a polio victim. In addition, the psychiatrist Charles Socarides, founder of the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), argued that homosexuality is an illness, a neurosis, possibly caused by an over-attachment to the mother, which he too argued could be treated.Bieber and Socrarides became the authoritative and often-referenced researchers in the area of causation and treatment of homosexuality. Fighting medicalized oppressionThe year following our storming the Shoreham Hotels Regency Ballroom, APA held its next annual conference in Dallas, Texas. No activist propped open a side entrance, and no multi-group contingent burst into the assemblage, for something seemed to have changed within the organization over the intervening year.Barbara Gittings and Franklin Kameny again presented their views and facilitated a workshop discussion, this time joined by Dr. H. Anonymous (a.k.a. psychiatrist Dr. John E. Fryer) wearing a costume mask to hide his identity while discussing his experiences as a gay psychiatrist and member of the APA.By 1973, the American Psychiatric Association had finally changed its designation of homosexuality for those comfortable with their sexual orientation, now asserting that it does not constitute a disorder: [H]omosexualityper seimplies no impairment in judgment, stability, reliability, or general social or vocational capabilities. Two years later, in 1975, the American Psychological Association followed suit and urged mental health professionals to take the lead in removing the stigma of mental illness that has long been associated with homosexual orientations. In the American Psychiatric Associations DSM-V, the diagnosis of gender identity disorder, which the manual has imposed upon transgender people since it published DSM-III in 1980, underwent what the APAs subcommittee working on the change considered as a more neutral designation, gender dysphoria, which they considered as descriptive rather than diagnostic and pathologizing. In the case of LGBTQ+ people, the scientific community has consistently deployed the medical model to investigate and pathologize the other. In so doing, heteronormativity and cissupremacy (oppression and colonization against trans people) become perceived as unremarkable or normal unquestioned hegemonic norms against which all others are judged. This medicalization of homosexuality, bisexuality, and trans identities served to strengthen oppression and maintain heterosexual and cisgender privilege. Destroying the status quo I am very proud of the actions we took during those difficult and exciting times in the 1970s. We contributed our small piece to the large jigsaw puzzle of queer history. Its a piece that when interlocked with the others as we comrades interlocked arms to prevent the outraged psychiatrists from evicting us from the Regency Ballroom, helped expose the biases and, most importantly, the foundational power dynamics in the social constructions of abnormality, disease, mental illness, hysteria, disability, and immaturity for us and for so many other marginalized groups, including women, people of color, people who are differently abled, young people, and elders.Following our successful and historic zap on the APA psychiatrists that day in May 1971, we exalted comrades returned to the GLF commune at 1620 S Street in northwest DC, and we sang in unified and joyous harmony When the Gays Go Marchin In.And in fact, we did!Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMChristian Nationalists dream of taking over America. This movement is actually doing it.Mother JonesNovember+December issueinvestigates the Christian nationalist movement that aspires to take over government at all levels, from school boards and state legislatures to Congress and the Supreme Court. Read their series of storieshere. This articlefirst appeared on Mother Jones. It has been republished with the publications permission. One August evening,I drove through the cornfields and dairy farms of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to attend a government-themed prayer night at Ephrata Community Church. The sprawling house of worship looks like an office park and houses a cafe and an indoor playground in addition to a large sanctuary. This event, however, was in a converted barn across the parking lot called Gateway House of Prayer. For the last 15 years, it has been open 24 hours a day for the faithful to worship when the main church is closed, with parishioners keeping watch in shifts. It was a Thursday night. Gradually, about 22 congregants, mostly seniors, all of whom were members of the community, filtered in. Over the next two hours, the group prayed, sometimes quietly and sometimes very loudly, and sometimes in strings of syllables, a charismatic Christian tradition known as speaking in tongues. Of the prayers that I could understand, many were what youd hear in any churchgratitude for Gods goodness or entreaties for family members going through hard times.Shutterstock Kellers Mill Covered Bridge in Ephrata, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania | Shutterstock Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. One prayer leader encouraged attendees to join a pair of prophets who were taking daily Communion for 90 days at exactly 4:14 p.m. Why so precise? The answer can be found in two Old Testament verses: Esther 4:14, which says Christians are called to speak up in the face of persecution, and Nehemiah 4:14, which is about fighting, the prayer leader said, on behalf of our sons, our daughters, our families. The devotees she mentioned were leaders in the New Apostolic Reformation, a charismatic evangelical Christian movement led by a loose network of self-appointed prophets and apostles, who claim that God speaks directly to them, often in dreams. They believe that Christians are called to wage a spiritual battle for control of the United States. In the vanguard of an ascendant Christian nationalist movement, they are seeking an explicitly Christian command of public schools, social policy, and all levels of the government, including the courts. Some scholars claim NAR is the fastest-growing spiritual movement in the United States. Evangelical writer C. Peter Wagner described it as the most significant shake-up in Protestantism since the Reformation. Its laser focus on starting a spiritual war to Christianize America has led the Southern Poverty Law Center to call NAR the greatest threat to US democracy that you have never heard of.Its the transformation of an entire societysomething so transcendentally revolutionary that most people never even thought about something like this.Fred Clarkson, senior research analyst with the extremism watchdog group Political Research AssociatesEstimates of Christians influenced by NAR vary widely, from 3 million to 33 million. But the number of adherents isnt the extent of its influence; its main tenets have moved beyond the confines of churches and into the political mainstream, largely thanks to traveling apostles and prophets who preach at evangelical churches all over the world. Fred Clarkson, a senior research analyst with the extremism watchdog group Political Research Associates, described the New Apostolic Reformation as a seismic cultural shift. Its the transformation of an entire society with this certain kind of Christo-centric worldview, he told me. Were talking about something so transcendentally revolutionary that most people never even thought about something like this. Donald Trumps former national security adviserMike Flynnhas hosted NAR leaders on his ReAwaken America tour, and House SpeakerMike Johnson(R-La.) has worked with its apostles. Just this past weekend, GOP vice presidential hopeful Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio)appearedin Pennsylvania at an event hosted by Lance Wallnau,a Texas business strategist-turned-NAR superstar. Wallnau, who has called Kamala Harris a Jezebel and speculated that people on the political left may be controlled bydemons, helped developProject 19, a right-wing political initiative to win 19 key counties in swing states for Trump.I asked Clarkson for a metaphor to describe how New Apostolic Reformation concepts have spread beyond the confines of the movement. At first, he suggested the cellular process of osmosis, or perhaps a tea infusion, but neither accounts for the intentionality of the movements leaders. How do you infuse your Christian ideas into Babylon? he asked, referring to an ancient city that rejected God. Thats the nature of their thinking. It can be deeply subversive. It can also be utterly in your face.Shutterstock | Shutterstock Since 2016,many NAR prophesies have concerned Trump, whom adherents see as having been divinely chosen to lead the country. Trumps introduction to the movement came in 2002 when heinvitedFlorida apostle Paula White-Cain to be his personal minister after seeing her preach on television. By the time he became president, he had acquired a handful of other NAR spiritual advisers: most notably, a South Carolinabased apostle named Dutch Sheets and prophet Cindy Jacobs, who helms an influential ministry in Texas. Throughout his presidency, Trumps NAR counselors were mostly ignored by White House reporters, dismissed as latter-day versions of evangelical pastor Billy Graham with Richard Nixon, or Jeremiah Wright with Barack Obama. Yet these are the key religious people around Donald Trump and the people who brought him the presidency, Clarkson said. Theyre the people who influenced his presidency and the people who are leading the religious wing of his reelection campaign. As the 2020 election drew near, their role became more important. White-Cain warned her followers that Christians who dont support Trump will have to stand accountable before God one day. Shortly after Trumps defeat, Sheets became an influential figure in the Stop the Steal campaign, leading rallies across the country. He warned that the results of the presidential election were going to be overturned and President Trump is going to be put back in office for four years. Around the same time, White-Cain gave aspeechimploring religious Americans to strike and strike and strike and strike and strike and strike and strike and strike and strike and strike until you have victory. Eight days before the Capitol insurrection of January 6, 2021, a group of apostles held astrategymeeting with Trump and his advisers. In a January 1blog post, Sheets shared a dream from a prophet named Gina Gholston, in which she described moving toward the Capitol, not at a full gallop, but at a steady, determined, fast trot. As we began, written in white letters on the ground in front of us were the words, DONT STOP. A year after the insurrection, Sheets recounted a dream in which Trump had told him that he would be a political martyr because, he had said, loosely quoting the Bible, God has put the tools in me to tear down, root up, and confront the system.NAR leaders have targeted the Supreme Court, too. In 2018, during Justice Brett Kavanaughs contentious confirmation hearings, Sheets urged his followers to ask God to grant them a majority of Justices who are Constitutionalists, literalists (meaning they believe the Constitution is to be taken literally, exactly as it is written), and who are pro-life. He prayed for another vacancy on the Court soon, which he felt was coming quickly. In abroadcast, Wallnau, the NAR leader who recently hosted Vance in Pennsylvania, described the accusations of rape against Kavanaugh as a spiritual attack. The apostles visions for the Supreme Court didnt get much mainstream attentionuntil theNew York Timesbroke aseries of storiesabout flags displayed at the homes of Justice Samuel Alito. Religion is prominent in public life in Ephrata. | Shutterstock Meanwhile, NAR apostles have ensured that their teachings have spread into local civil societies. In Redding, California, the 11,000-member Bethel Church now funds the local police force and trains public school teachers. In Pasadena, Korean American apostle Ch Ahns Harvest Rock Church bankrolled local candidates, including one for state Senate. The Remnant Alliance, an NAR-affiliated group, teaches Christians across the nation to run for school boards. And then there is Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a county of 550,000 people spread out over a patchwork of fertile farmland, where I traveled to understand what this kind of local transformation looks like. Since the mid-1600s, Pennsylvania has been known for religious fervor. First came the Quakers, followed shortly after by the Anabaptists, or plain people. Ephrata, for example, was a hub for the Brethren, but the area is also known for Mennonites and particularly the Amish. Today, Lancaster also has become an NAR hub. A popular sports event venue hosts far-right Christian conferences. NAR-affiliated churches control the school boards. One local group holds Bible study in public schools; another baptizes students in portable troughs in front of public high schools. At the prayer night I attended, spiritual warfare rhetoric was on full display. An elderly woman described Lancaster public schools as being so infiltrated with evil, she prayed that school boards would open up their eyes and ears and stop just screaming things that they think are good. If they did their homework, theyd see theyre not good. Another woman announced that she had a vision of a claw machine. Instead of cheap prizes at the arcade, her clawwhich symbolized the demonic influence of secularismhad picked up peoples minds so that they cant discern whats right and wrong. Her metaphor became an entreaty to God: And I want to saydrop those minds and take them back for the Lord. The group broke out in a chorus of Fight, fight, fight!Shutterstock A Christian cross and a Jewish menorah atop a Bible | Shutterstock The New ApostolicReformation may be influential, but its also hard to pin down. With no single leader, annual conference, or website outlining statements of belief, it isnt a distinct Protestant denomination, like Baptists or Presbyterians, but a vast and amorphous network of prophets and apostles who oversee their own ministries, issue prophetic declarations, and journey to churches all over the world to spread their ideology. Though many adherents fit the stereotype of the white, male Christian nationalist, some of the most prominent American apostles are African Americans and women; some of the most powerful global apostles come from African nations. But in Lancaster, the churches are overwhelmingly white. The term New Apostolic Reformation was coined in the 1990s by the influential evangelical writer Wagner, who emphasized that he was not the movements leaderbecause it had none. It was instead a coming together of several smaller sects that shared a belief that God appointed apostles and prophets who possessed special gifts of the spirit, like the ability to perform miracles, for instance, or speak in tongues. In what became known as the fivefold ministry, NAR churches organized themselves into five areas of leadership: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. Leaders were urged to use their influence to create an environment in which the blessings and prosperity of the Kingdom of God can permeate all areas of society, to conquer the Seven Mountains: Religion, Family, Education, Government, Media, Arts & Entertainment, and Business. It was Wallnau who popularized this doctrine of Christian dominion, which is sometimes known as the Seven Mountain Mandate, or 7MM. According to a recent Denison University poll, between March 2023 and January 2024, the percentage of Christian Americans who believed in the Seven Mountain Mandate increased from just under 30 percent to 41 percent. The concept routinely appears in conservative political discourse. Alabama Chief Justice Tom Parker, who championed fetal personhood in a February 2024 ruling, said in aninterviewwith a prominent NAR apostle that God created government and thats why he is calling and equipping people to step back into these mountains.Promoting a Christian nation has seeped into some of the Supreme Court justices opinions. In the 2019 caseAmerican Legion v. American Humanist Association, the court ruled in favor of the American Legion, which had erected a 40-foot cross on public land in Maryland. Alitowrotethat taking down the cross would be aggressively hostile to religion. In the 2022Kennedy v. Bremerton School Districtcase, the court ruled 63 in favor of a public high school football coach who lost his job for routinely leading prayers during games. Writing for the conservative majority, Justice Neil Gorsuch unilaterallydeclaredthat the court had long ago abandoned a decades-old precedent that established that government employees cant advance a particular religious ideology. After the court declined in February to take up a case filed on behalf of people who had been removed from a jury because of their belief that gay marriage was wrong, Alitowrotein an unusual personal statement that he worried Americans who do not hide their adherence to traditional religious beliefs about homosexual conduct will be labeled as bigots and treated as such by the government.Theres very little question that [Christian nationalist] views are very much reflected in where this Supreme Court majority is on religion and church and state.Elliot Mincberg, Supreme Court scholar and fellow with the pro-democracy organization People for the American WayThe perception that Christians are being persecuted by the government is a potentrallying cryof the Christian nationalist movement. Elliot Mincberg, a Supreme Court scholar and fellow with the pro-democracy organization People for the American Way, said, Theres very little question that [Christian nationalist] views are very much reflected in where this Supreme Court majority is on religion and church and state.Clarkson has watched as the ideas popularized by NARthe Seven Mountain Mandate, the fivefold ministry, and the concept of spiritual warfarehave infiltrated churches that arent officially connected to the movement. There are so many Christianities, and they change over timethis is a perfect example, he said. People dont necessarily know where every belief they hold came from.NAR also appropriates Jewish imagery. Two days after I heard one shofar at Ephrata, I attended an all-day prayer burn at a barn in the countryside where several attendees blew them. Others wore tallitot, or Jewish prayer shawls. A group of tween dancers carried a chuppah, a four-posted canopy often used in Jewish weddings. The group sang in Hebrew as they danced the hora, a standard feature in Jewish celebrations. Then, one of the NAR leaders I recognized from Ephrata took the microphone and began to speak about Jesus. Hes the Lord of hosts, she said. A cacophonous roar of shofars came from the crowd.Shutterstock A boy blowing a shofar | Shutterstock When I asked an attendee about all the Jewish references, she explained that it was simply a way to acknowledge the shared heritage between Christians and Jews. But thats not the whole story, as Clarkson later reminded me. Many NAR adherents believe that they have a special role as Christians in the end-times to deliver Israela time when Jews will finally recognize Jesus as their Savior.Lancaster hasbeen home for centuries to the plain people, the Amish, the Mennonites, and the Brethren who, to various degrees, eschew machines and other trappings of modernity. But its demographics have shifted markedly over the last few decades. About 7 percent of Lancasters senior citizens are people of color, compared with a quarter of the youth. The gap between registered Democrats and Republicans has also narrowed.Much of this purpling is taking place in the cobblestone streets and stately brick buildings of Lancaster City, which has welcomed 5,000 refugees to its population of 58,000 over the last 20 years. When I visited, I encountered a street festival in full swing. Young people grabbed overflowing plates of chicken tikka from an Indian food truck, and a crowd around the main stage danced to the music of a Liberian hip-hop artist. The way that youre going to heal society is that youre going to eliminate many government functions.Rachel Tabachnick, an extremism researcherwho studies NARCity officials may embrace this diversity, but county leaders dont. In February, the Lancaster City Councilpasseda law prohibiting police and city employees from asking people about their immigration status; county commissioners promptlydeclaredLancaster a non-sanctuary county. In June, after the City Councilpasseda resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, County Commissioner Josh Parsons called the move a propaganda victory for Hamas. Lancasters overwhelmingly Republican state representatives tend to side with the county, even publiclydenouncingthe citys efforts to welcome immigrants. These state representatives regularly interact with NAR leaders. In May, two of themmetwith Sean Feucht, an NAR-aligned pastor who travels the country holding prayer rallies on the steps of state Capitol buildings. Also present at the meeting wasAbby Abildness, aregional leaderfor a prominent NAR figures network. Abildness, who works with the states prayer caucus group inside the Capitol to promote Christian initiatives in government, has spoken candidly about her desire to blur the boundaries between church and state. We need them and they need us, she said, because we cant go write those laws.NAR influence in Lancaster churches began appearing in the early 2000s, but the Covid culture wars accelerated its spread. Six years ago, when Rebecca Branle, the owner of a local bike shop and mother of three, moved to Ephrata, she knew her family might stand out because they didnt attend church. We werent religious like everyone else, but I didnt think it was that big of a deal, she recalls. But in 2020, the pandemic hit, and once-negligible differences became flash points. After Branle posted a rainbow flag and a Black Lives Matter sign on her property, someone shot a bullet through the barn window, and in another incident, someone left a single slab of granite outside; Look Behind You was written on it in permanent marker, accompanied by a smiley face with the eyes crossed out. In smaller print appeared Gays will burn in hell and You can repent. She was scared for her familys safety, but also confused: Especially this community of people who say theyre so religious, suddenly this kind of talk is okay with them? The pandemic frightened many evangelical church leaders as well, but not because of the illness. Closing churches and mask mandates, which someconsideredoffensive to God, were the real concern. Some pastors called vaccines the mark of the beast. To them, the pandemics major lesson was that government had become too powerfuland Christians had neglected to exert influence over that mountain.Don Lamb, an ebullient, redheaded pastor whose complexion turns ruddier when he gets excited, felt the impact of Covid profoundly. We sat in the basement of LifeGate church in the small Lancaster enclave of Elizabethtown, population 12,000, and Lamb described how once his congregation of 150 were just doing our things, staying within our four walls, preaching the gospel. But when mask mandates came into effect, it was authoritarian into the nth degree, and so that awoke the church to say, We need to be involved here. In sermons, Lamb and his brother and co-pastor, Doug, urged their congregation to oppose not only pandemic restrictions but also mail-in ballots, critical race theory, pronoun protocols, and other culture war issues. When Joe Biden won the 2020 election, the Lambs believed that his victory was the result of coordinated election interference by the left.Who gets to define the vision of societyonly the liberals and secularists? Thats what makes us more determined to fight. On January 6, 2021, Don Lamb and several parishioners went to the rally outside the US Capitol. What was meant to be a peaceful gathering, he said, became violent only after police were already throwing or launching flash-bang grenades at the audience. He believes that the protesters who breached the building were set up and that the chaos could have been avoided. We could have surrounded the Capitol with 100,000 Christians arm to arm just saying, Grace, Amazing Grace, he said, and there would have been no protesters who would have broken that line.Lamb follows Lance Wallnau, and he subscribes to the Seven Mountain Mandate. Trump, he told me, was providentially given the stage of America. Yet he doesnt consider his church to be part of NAR. The term Christian nationalism irks him. The real problem with our nation, he says, is liberal nationalisms obsession with cancel culture, identity politics, and elite institutions. Who gets to define the vision of societyonly the liberals and secularists? he asked me. Thats what makes us more determined to fight.Don and Doug Lamb often refer to the persecution of Christians in their sermons. The previous Sunday, Doug began by urging his congregation to love their neighbors, even those with whom they disagreed. But by hours end, he was berating Muslim immigrants in England who have taken over the entire country instead of assimilating. When a Muslim visits, he said, Theyre not coming as a guest. They want to take over your house. He likened this to the futility of seeking peace with those who follow Satanlike gay people who destroyed the church in America, he said. You cant compromise the truth and have peace with people who are diabolically opposed to what you believe. Later, Lamb clarified that a better way to phrase this sentiment might have been: You shouldnt compromise the truth to be at peace with those who oppose you.Shutterstock Ten Commandments at start of path in forest | Shutterstock Some LifeGate congregants appear to be using those messages to inform local politics. In 2021, three church memberswon seatson the Elizabethtown school board, flipping it to a conservative majority. This past June, the school board voted to work with the Independence Law Center, a Christian law firm that has worked with school boards to ban transgender athletes in the county. A tertiary branch of the Family Research Councila group that has long advocated against the separation of church and statethe law center has deep ties to NAR and is steeped in Washingtons extreme conservative religious right. After our conversation, Don took us on a tour of his church. In the cozy, sunlit sanctuary, someone had left a flyer on a pew. The heading read, Practical areas to prepare to speak out to societal issues. The fourth item advised Christians, People dont care that you are a Christian, a citizen, or even a femaleyou are the enemy! Note: This would not happen to Muslims, Atheists, or BLM groups. Lamb later told me that You are the enemyof their agenda would have been more accurate. Branle, the Ephrata resident whose barn was vandalized, understands how it feels to be seen as the enemy. When she emailed local police about veiled threats she had received, an officer responded: Can you elaborate on specifically what you perceive the threat to be? This appears to be a statement of opinion, which is protected speech. After reporting a few more incidents to police, I just stopped talking to them, she said. It felt a lot like it wasnt helping.Groups affiliatedwith NAR are also the quiet heartbeat of institutions serving Lancasters neediest residents. TNT Youth Ministry, an evangelical group, providesclassroom volunteers and field trip chaperones, and it runs Bible studies in local public schools. Another NAR-adjacent ministry, REAL Life Community Services, boaststhat it is the only full-time social services department in one town.Community service is a typical mission of faith groups the world over. But for Christians who believe they are called to influence the government, the objective is not spurred by faith alone. Rachel Tabachnick, an extremism researcherwho studies NAR, notes that many of its adherents believe that the way that youre going to heal society is that youre going to eliminate many government functions. The church, not the government, will decide whether to feed you or house you or clothe you. While in Lancaster, I visited the Blessings of Hope food distribution center, a Walmart-size grocery store that collects surplus food from manufacturers and makes it available to food pantries throughout the region at a deep discount. Rows of shelves filling the cavernous warehouse were crammed with giant bags of nacho cheese, dried chow mein noodles, gefilte fish, and onion ring mix. An army of volunteers, mostly women, many wearing the traditionalhaubehair covering for married Mennonite women, unloaded pallets of boxes.Shutterstock An Amish girl at a Market in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. | Shutterstock David Lapp, a 42-year-old father of 12 and CEO of Blessings of Hope, was in charge. He grew up Amish and speaks with the German-inflected lilt typical of the plain communities in the region. In the early 2000s, he and his eight brothers began to read more about evangelical Christianity. By 2006, after the Amish officially excommunicated them for straying from the churchs teachings, they began to follow NAR leaders, including prophet Andrew Wommack, whobelievesthere is a demonic deception that is blinding those who spoke out against Trump. They have helped convert several Amish people, introducingthem to Wommacks work. Several of the Lapp brothers founded Blessings of Hope in 2006, and it has become a massive operation spread across five warehouses, providing 50,000 meals a day. Their work has drawn national attention: Ivanka Trumptouredthe distribution center during the 2020 campaign.Lapp still dresses in the style of the Amish, with a handmade collared shirt, suspenders, and a bowl cut, because we felt like God asked us to keep the traditional garb more as a bridge back to our people. He sees his work as a divine calling. His organizations closest competitor, he said, is the behemoth nonprofit Feeding America, which he described as more of a government-run, government-funded organization whose church participants are not allowed to share the gospel when theyre giving out food. Lapp, who believes in the Seven Mountain Mandate, sees publicly funded food pantries as a missed opportunity for the church. When government administers social services, he said, theyre going to miss the hearts of the people.Shutterstock Praying hands and a U.S. flag | Shutterstock Back at EphrataCommunity Church, I attended a Saturday evening service in the main building. Toddlers danced in the aisles as the worship band jammed. Some of the congregants had brought shofars in zippered carrying cases. After a somewhat banal sermon, I met executive pastor Jim Ehrman, who told me that he had only recently learned about NAR. Ephrata Community Church, he explained, had long had a loose affiliation with apostle Randy Clark, but we dont have a reference for it other than a group we care about was accused of being that. I pressed further. Wasnt his church about to host John Bevere, an NAR-affiliated pastor who has warned against the practice of tolerance?I had no idea he would have been associated with it, Ehrman said. As far as the Seven Mountain teaching was concerned: We do agree [the mountains] are there, but were very much like, No, its who you are and how you carry yourself into those. Theres not somemandate to take over. When I told him about the prayer night, he seemed bemused. All the talk of spiritual warfare I had seen was just the frame and the language they pick up, he said. Was Ehrman just being coy about his churchs connections to the New Apostolic Reformation, or was he genuinely naive to a movement that was so powerful and pervasive? In a sense, it didnt matter. Another imperfect metaphor for the influence of NAR is climate change. Like it or not, its happening. The question for many pastors is how to steer their congregations through an increasingly chaotic and extreme religious landscape. For Ehrman, the label was unimportant. What mattered was that armies of angels were indeed battling with the principalities of darkness. There are literally unseen beings who are at odds with the work of Godon this earth, he said. And we believe that they are trying to influence things as well.Additional reporting by theLancaster Examiner.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 30 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMBlack LGBTQ+ women want Kamala Harris to speak out on these key issuesSince running for office, Vice President Kamala Harriss silence on LGBTQ+ issues has been appallingly deafening. Kamalas website has one sentence about us under the heading Protect Civil Rights and Freedoms: As President, shell fight to pass the Equality Act to enshrine anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQI+ Americans in health care, housing, education, and more into law. The president and vice presidential debates havent mentioned LGBTQ+ issues either. We need her voice to speak out for us in a few key ways. Related Kamala Harris says GOPs anti-LGBTQ+ attacks are making Americans feel unsafe She implied that Republicans beat people down so they feel alone small and not a part of the United States. Taking us for granted? Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Im getting used to saying Madame President,' said Paul Glass, co-founder and Program Coordinator of LGBTQ+ Elders of Color. But with that said, it is important for her to recognize us and elevate the LGBTQ+ community. The fact that she has not spoken definitively about our community is a misstep in my mind. I think its something she needs to correct, Glass added. I think she needs to have a town hall and address the issue concerning LGBTQ+ issues in particular. However, with less than a month away, Harris and her campaign may feel she lacks the time to hold a town hall meeting with us. With LGBTQ+ Americans mostly aligning with Democrats, Harriss groundswell of support from the LGBTQ+ community immediately followed her announcement in July. Immediately after announcing her bid for the White House, a press release from the Human Rights Campaign announced that over 1,100 LGBTQ+ leaders, celebrities, influencers, and activists had signed a letter endorsing Harris. For two decades, Harris has been a staunch supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, beginning with her tenure as San Franciscos district attorney in 2004 to the present as the Biden-Harris administration with the passing of many pro-LGBTQ+ policies and initiatives. Some feel her track record speaks for itself. However, others think its not enough to rest on her laurels. Unmet trans issuesShe has the iconic video talking about trans rights and trans lives from when she ran many years ago, but what about 2024? Giselle Byrd told me. Shes the new executive director of The Theater Offensive in Boston and the first black transwoman to head a major theater company in the country. The life is different. Our opportunities are different. But we are still seeing the same sort of injustices. Trans folks are still being murdered, she asked. How are we being protected at a federal level because there is not a lot of protection for us? We are not thinking beyond gay marriage. With anti-trans bills continuing to be introduced into legislation across the country to obliterate any traces of transgender Americans from public life education, bathrooms, athletics, military, healthcare, and legal recognition Harris cannot afford to not speak up on trans civil rights while on the campaign trail, because Trump is. The Team Trump Agenda 47 Policy Tour clarifies its plan to revoke gender-affirming care. The plan states it will stop the chemical, physical, and emotional mutilation of our youth because no serious country should be telling its children that they were born with the wrong gender.Although a pro- LGBTQ+ ally, Sen. Harris (D-CA) made some missteps on transgender advocacy. In 2015, she denied gender-affirming surgery for a trans sister in prison. In 2019, Harris co-sponsored the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA) and the Stop Enabling Sex Trafficking Act (SESTA) with 27 Republican and Democrat senators. Had she repealed FOSTA-SESTA, both acts working together would have decriminalized sex work, created a safer and consensual work environment online, provided financial stability, and stopped sex trafficking. What Harris must doHarris has the LGBTQ+ vote in the bag. However, once in office, we must use our voting clout. The LGBTQ+ community must push Harris on a laundry list of issues. These immediate ones that would exponentially improve quality of life:Repeal FOSTA/SESTA to decriminalize sex workers, allowing sex workers the dignity of a safe work environment.Protect gender-affirming care because the government should not decide. Protect the 2022 Respect for Marriage Act that expands same-sex and interracial marriage rights against a Trump Supreme Court.Pass the Equality Act prohibiting anti- LGBTQ+ discrimination nationwide beyond employment and in every aspect of our lives, like housing, federal funding, and public education, to name a few.We must stress to Harris that democracy can only begin to work when those relegated to the fringes of society can begin to sample what those in society take for granted as their inalienable right.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 29 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMMarjorie Taylor Greene tried to mock conspiracy theorists. It backfired spectacularly.People cannot believe Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) a known conspiracy theorist took to X over the weekend to mock none other than conspiracy theorists. The anti-LGBTQ+ congresswoman who has most recently asserted that Democrats control the weather and created brutal hurricanes to ravage red states posted a meme depicting someone in a massive tinfoil hat. It states, Almost everyone in America right now. Greene added her own, Yep to the post. The post shocked X users, considering Greene was once a follower of the Qanon conspiracy theory, which posits that there is a secret international Satanic child sex cabal, led by Hillary Clinton and Tom Hanks, which Donald Trump was working behind-the-scenes to dismantle. She wrote at least 57 articles about the conspiracy on a now-defunct website, earning her the title of QAnon candidate when she ran in the 2020 elections.Greene also continues to peddle an endless stream of lies about gender-affirming care, repeatedly claiming that liberals are spreading so-called gender ideology to force kids to transition. On Saturday the same day Greene posted mocking conspiracy theorists she posted that Democrats think its okay to allow kids to have their genitals barbarically mutilated with irreversible gender-affirming care.' WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMFirst national estimate of trans youth reveals devastating mental health crisis3.3% of high school students in the United States identify as transgender, with an additional 2.2% still questioning their gender identity, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While about half of cisgender students reported being female, about two thirds of trans or questioning students identified as such. The report also found more white than Black students identify as trans. Related Trans kids are more than their genders. American Teenager invites us into their dynamic lives. Nico Langs new book reminds readers of the real people and families who have been effected by anti-trans legislation. Trans students also appear to be more open when it comes to sexuality. While almost 80% of cisgender students said their sexual identity was heterosexual, only 8.7% of trans students and 7.5% of questioning students said the same. The findings in the report demonstrate that transgender and questioning students experience more violence, less school connectedness, more unstable housing, poorer mental health, and more suicidal thoughts and behaviors than their cisgender peers, the report states. 40% of trans and questioning students reported being bullied at school, and 26% said they attempted suicide in the past year. In comparison, only 5% of cisgender males said the same. Indeed, the Trevor Projects 2024 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People confirmed the importance of affirming spaces, finding that LGBTQ+ youth with access to such spaces are less likely to attempt suicide. WWW.PRIDE.COMHistory's hidden gems, 10 LGBTQ+ heroes you haven't heard of (yet)Happy LGBTQ History Month! While many may take time to carve pumpkins this month, Im carving out space to honor the legends who paved the way for folks like us. October is LGBTQ+ History Month, a time when we not only celebrate the trailblazers who came before us but reflect on the wild, wonderful, and sometimes messy history of those who dared to live their truthlong before it was hashtag-worthy.Though the world has come to recognize and celebrate giants like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Bayard Rustin, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, there are plenty whose flowers have yet to be given. These figures refused to stay in the shadows in a world that often tried to make them invisible. From sword-wielding opera singers to transgender spies, they didnt just make historythey redefined what it means to live authentically.Julie d'Aubigny: The Opera Singer Who Fought for Love and FreedomThe opera singer who sword-fought her way into history, Julie was the original hot mess, but oh, what a glorious one. She broke the hearts of men and women, threw punches, and had the nerve to run away with a nun after trying to burn down a convent. Julie didnt just live outside the lines; she scribbled all over them.Chevalier d'Eon: The Trailblazing Trans Aristocrat Who Defied Gender NormsIf Julie was a tempest, the Chevalier dEon was the storms eye. dEon is one of the first well-documented trans women in history, a French aristocrat in 18th-century France who served as a diplomat and spy. An expert swordswoman, she fought for her right to live authentically centuries before trans rights were acknowledged.William Dorsey Swann: The Queen of Drag Who Stood Up to the LawThe drag queen who stood up to the law! Before RuPaul was sashaying on our screens, William Dorsey Swann organized underground drag balls in 1880s Washington DC. Swann not only claimed the title of Queen but also led the first known protest for LGBTQ+ rights in America. Simon Nkoli: South Africa's LGBTQ+ Freedom FighterSimon Nkoli wasnt just a South African LGBTQ+ activist, he was an author and freedom fighter who stood on the front lines of both the anti-apartheid, gay liberation, and AIDS awareness movements in South Africa. With courage as big as his heart, Simon turned his experiences of imprisonment into a platform for equality, making it clear that freedom meant freedom for everyone. Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil: India's Openly Gay Royal Who Fought for LoveBeing a prince comes with expectationslike, say, marrying a princess. But Prince Mavendra Singh Gohil had other plans. A scion of a former Indian ruling family, this modern-day royal made international headlines as the first openly gay royal in India, using his platform to champion LGBTQ+ rights in his country. The prince later found his happily ever after in his husband, the American-born DeAndre Richardson. If Bollywood ever needed a real-life love story, this ones a royal epic. We'wha: The Indigenous Two-Spirit Who Bridged WorldsIn the Zuni culture, WeWha was a Two-Spirit in their indigenous community. Wewha was a beloved cultural ambassador in the 19th century, and when they traveled to Washington DC, they were even introduced to then President Grover Cleveland. Little did the president know, he was meeting the epitome of gender fluidity centuries before the world caught up.Billy Tipton: The Jazz Musician Who Kept His Secret Until the Very EndBilly Tipton was a talented jazz musician and bandleader who got his start in the mid-1930s. It was not until after his death that it was revealed Tipton was assigned female at birth. For decades, Billy navigated the world as a successful musician, proving that talent was what mattered, not his gender. Billy blurred the lines in more than one, and history is finally catching up. Khnumhotep and Niankhkhnum: The Ancient Egyptian Lovers Who Lived Before LabelsLong before social media allowed us to upload picture-perfect images of queer couples, two royal manicurists in ancient Egypt were way ahead of the trend. While some historians may shout They were just really good friends, images of Khnumhotep and Niankhkhnum show them in intimate poses, forever side-by-side, in an eternal relationship that defied labels but never doubted love. King David and Jonathan: Biblical BFFs...or More? The Bible tells us that David and Jonathan loved each other as their own soul, and whether or not their relationship was platonic or romantic is still debated. But lets face it, their emotional bond and fierce loyalty give epic bromance a whole new meaning. Im sure a harp is playing a slow jam for these two somewhere. Gerry Studds: The First Out Gay U.S. CongressmanWhen U.S. Congressman Gerry Studds came out in 1983, it wasnt by choice. Outed amid a scandal, Studds didnt back downhe stood tall and continued to fight for LGBTQ+ rights, becoming a trailblazer for gay representation in American politics. You know youre making history when even a scandal cant keep you down. We're here, we're queer, get used to it!Whether its a Congressional office, an Egyptian tomb, or freeing your partner from a convent, love and identity have always found a way to thriveeven when society wasnt ready for them. These figures didnt just bend the rules: they broke them, redefined them, and handed them back to us with a wink and a strut.0 Comments 0 Shares 28 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMWhat is your biggest concern regarding statewide ballot issues this election? While the presidential and U.S. congressional races get the most attention during election season, many voters are also concerned about statewide ballot and legislative issues. So were wondering: Which issues are amongst your biggest concerns in your state?National Democrats have highlighted workers rights by aligning with unions, and 11 states will have abortion-related ballot measures (an issue that typically lures Democratic voters to the polls). But energy and environmental issues came up during the recent vice presidential debate especially as two hurricanes recently pummeled southeastern red states.Additionally, education reform has become a more pressing issue as Republicans and Christian conservatives seek to redirect taxpayer funds from public schools to for-profit private and religious schools that can discriminate without government oversight. In fact, Project 2025, the blueprint for Trumps second term, advocates for this.Naturally, these issues and the election itself all hinge on voting rights and reforms (including ranked-choice voting), which would increase access and representation at the ballot box. While not everyone is a single-issue voter, wed like to know the issues that feel most important to you. Let us know in the poll below.Reader Poll Week of October 14thAlso, make sure that youre registered to vote.0 Comments 0 Shares 29 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMDem releases ill-advised dog whistle ad against trans student athletesTexas U.S. House Rep. Colin Allred (D) has become the first national Democratic candidate ever to release a TV ad responding to Republican transphobic attacks.I dont want boys playing girls sports, Allred says in a new ad. The ad is a response to several aired on behalf of his Republican opponent for the U.S. Senate, anti-LGBTQ+ Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX). Cruzs ads have attacked Allred for supporting the Equality Act a federal law that would ban anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination and opposing a national Republican ban on trans athletes in sports. Related Republican AGs ask Supreme Court to let states ban trans people from sports They say the Constitution protects a states right to discriminate against trans people. Trans advocates have insinuated that Allreds ad is transphobic and needless, seeing as most American voters arent concerned about transgender athletes. Recent polling shows that Allred isthree to five percent behind Cruz among state voters. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Ted Cruz is lying again, but now hes lying about our children, Allred says at the beginning of his new ad. Im a dad, Im also a Christian. My faith has taught me that all kids are Gods kids. So let me be clear: I dont want boys playing girls sports or any of this ridiculous stuff that Ted Cruz is saying. The ad then shows imagery of Cruz in an airport in February 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, wearing a Texas flag and taking a flight to Cancun, Mexico during a historic ice storm that killed at least 246 Texans and left millions without heating or electricity.Ted Cruz is lying about my record because he cant defend his own, Allred then says as the screen fills with text from four publications that accuse Cruz of lying at various points from 2015 through 2024. He has done nothing to secure the border. He wants to raise the retirement age for social security. Hes full of it. You know that. Im Colin Allred, and I approve this message.Colin Allred out with a response to what's now three GOP TV ads hammering him over trans issues."Let me be clear: I don't want boys playing girls' sports, or any of this ridiculous stuff Ted Cruz is saying." pic.twitter.com/mSEkIq8a6y David Weigel (@daveweigel) October 11, 2024 Three weeks ago, Cruz released an ad stating, Somehow its become controversial to say that boys and girls are different, but they are. Colin Allred supports boys playing in girls sports. As proof of its claim, the ad notes that Allred voted against H.R. 734, the so-called Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, during an April 2023 vote. The bill (which has not become law) would amend Title IX regulations so that individuals whose biological sex at birth was male cannot participate in programs that are for women and girls.Allred also supports The Equality Act, legislation that would add sexual orientation and gender identity to pre-existing federal anti-discrimination laws. The act would explicitly prohibit gender discrimination in education and, therefore, school sports. However, Republican attorneys general would likely challenge trans-inclusion in scholastic sports, just as theyve opposed the Biden Administrations interpretation of Title IX to forbid anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination in public schools. In September, Cruz released another anti-trans ad against Allred, stating, Our girls are being left in the dust, robbed of their right to compete freely. Allred voted in Congress to oppose Texas State law that protects womens sports. Colin Allred voted to allow boys in girls bathrooms, boys in girls locker rooms, boys in girls sports. Thats not competition. Thats not fair. Allreds campaign told the Texas Tribune that Cruzs ad was a disgusting, false attack, and another example of how Ted Cruz only wants to divide Texans.Cruz will say anything to distract from his dangerous abortion ban that is putting womens lives at risk, trying to raise the retirement age for Social Security and Medicare and fleeing to Cancun during a deadly winter storm, Josh Stewart, an Allred spokesperson, said in a statement.Cruz has reportedly spent $6.7 million on ads against Allred. The ads are part of a $65 million spending blitz by Republicans nationwide to air transphobic political ads in a bid to win suburban female voters. Trans journalist Erin Reed called Allreds response ill-advised and wrote that, although Allreds ad doesnt specifically mention transgender people, his line about boys playing girls sports is likely to be heard as an anti-trans dogwhistle in Texas, where nearly every anti-trans ad has framed transgender girls as boys.' Since Allred had full control over the messaging in the ad, he could have avoided the dogwhistle by being clearer about his views and support for transgender youth, Reed said. Allred will debate Cruz on Tuesday.Regardless, polling indicates that most voters arent worried about trans athletes and are less likely to support transphobic political candidates. Whilea 2023 Gallup pollshowed that only 26% of Americans think trans athletes should be allowed to play on sports teams that fit their gender identity, polls in five battleground states conducted byThe New York Timesand Siena College show that majorities of Americans think society should accept transgender peoples gender identities.Recent HRC pollingshows that only 5% of voters say theyre concerned about gender-affirming care comparatively, 52% are more concerned about economic inflation raising the cost of living. Additionally, 61% said they wont support candidates who support banning gender-affirming care including 41% of Republicans.A June poll by the Texas Politics Project found that state voters care about immigration and border security, the economy, inflation, abortion and womens rights trans issues didnt rank amongst the voters top concerns.Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at the University of Houston, told The Houston Chronicle that while Cruzs ads dont resonate with most Texas voters concerns, theyre designed to inflame the Republican base so that they show up to vote against Allred in the November elections.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 26 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COM25 rules of texting etiquette for gay menBecause apparently we still dont have this down...Texting has been a mainstream thing for well over a decade, but it seems like some rules just go over peoples heads. Rules, you ask? Yes, there are rules to texting, and potential boyfriends just dont seem to get how to text. So, lets talk about 25 rules that are now officially written into law for all the texting etiquette gay and bisexual men should know.1. Limit group text message responsesI get it when youre trying to organize an event and you just want to invite everybody right away without sending out a bunch of individual text messages. Often, the person sending those messages says not to respond to the group message, but rather individually. Dont be the person or people that turn the group chat into a party.2. Be appropriateSex talk is fun and theres always a time and a place for nudes, but texting isnt the place for you to say things you wouldnt say to a person face-to-face. Be respectful and appropriate when youre texting, unless sexting is the actual point.3. Let people know when you switch your numberWe all know what its like to send a message that gets a who is this? response. We also know what its like when the person we think were texting is no longer attached to that number. Let people know when youre making a switch.4. Use exclamation marks! They are your best friends! Use them!! Literally doesnt even matter what youre saying, you still use them!!! Theres physical research to support this. In 2015, The Washington Post published an article titled, "Study confirms that ending texts with a period is terrible."Quoting from that article, "Researchers, led by Binghamton University's Celia Klin, report that text messages ending with a period are perceived as being less sincere, probably because the people sending them are heartless." So STOP IT! Be sincere and have a heart. Use exclamation points!5. Respond (if youre not busy)I get it. Youre out with your friends and you dont want to be rude, so you dont reply. Okay. Thats fine. Thats great. But Im not talking about that. Im talking to you if youre lying in bed, watching TV, see a text, then go, "Ohhh, Ill just reply to this later." How dare you?6. Don't start the text and then just stopNow this is just cruel. Especially if its to a guy you like. When you start to reply, so the guy on the other end sees those anticipatory three dots, then all of a sudden, it disappears and you dont reply. Heartless. Truly a monster.7. Avoid using 'okay,' 'fine,' or any other one-word response that can easily be perceived as passive aggressiveFirst off, dont be passive aggressive. But then second, dont send texts that could easily be perceived as passive-aggressive. These one word responses are just cruel. They dont express what youre thinking at all, and its so unclear if youre actually upset or not.8. Show an appropriate level of excitementWhen I say something that gets you excited, I wanna see CAPS LOCK in your response. I wanna see a dozen exclamation points. I want 6 texts sent right in a row telling me how much youre freaking out and love it. THAT is what good friends do.9. Don't attempt to have serious conversations via text"We need to talk. Ive been thinking a lot about this and"Really??? Yes, we need to TALK. Exactly, what you said. We should have this talk in person. Not via text where our tones can easily be misconstrued and taken the wrong way.10. No long essays about your feelingsI get it. Its a lot easier to write down our feelings than to speak them. Its okay to have one of those 10-page texts like once a year, but you cant hide behind texting every time youre feeling a strong emotion.11. Stop it with the 'hey' textsIve written about this before, and people vehemently disagree with me, but Im holding fast to my beliefs. 'Hey' texts drive me completely insane. At least ask something like, "Hi, how are you?" or "What have you been up to?" Get to the point. Youll notice that real friends dont simply text each other "Hey." Its only people who don't really know one another. So get to know someone. Ask them a question if you want to talk to them!12. Dont just stop in the middle of a conversationSometimes you cant help but stop texting right as youre in the middle of a conversation. Something comes up at work, or you run into a friend on the street. I get it. But what I at least try to do if I can, is sayHold on, Ill BRB.That way he knows not to wait for a response from you.13. End the conversation clearlyThis isnt necessarily a must-do when it comes to texting, but its greatly appreciated. Its nice to know when a texting exchange has come to a full stop. I like being able to know that I no longer need to check my phone because weve ended the conversation. So aTalk to you soon!orHeading out now!is always a courteous text to send.14. No unsolicited nudesSo this is more for messaging on sex apps (although Ive gotten unsolicited nudes via Facebook message, which seems highly inappropriate to me) Umjust dont send them? Solicited nudes are great. Asking to send nudes are great. Unsolicited nudes of your asshole are jarring and off-putting. (Even if you have, like, the PERFECT peniswait until youre messaging back and forth before sending him that super intimate pic.)15. Be patientYes, its annoying when someone doesnt text back right away, but at the same time, dont follow up like 8 minutes later with a???Its really annoying, and frankly, a little desperate. If youre trying to set up a time to meet with someone and are waiting for their response, thats different. (I would say just go ahead and call them at that point.) But if youre just playfully chatting back and forth, dont be upset or immediately follow up when someone doesnt text you back right away.16. If youre texting someone you havent texted in a whileLets say youre texting someone you havent texted in a while. Lets also say that you both had sex once or twice a few months ago and then never spoke afterwards. Suddenly, youre thinking about how good that D was and you want some more of it. For the love of God, dont just send ahey, because odds are, he didnt save your number. He may have forgotten about you completely. You want to avoid the awkwardNew phone. Who dis?So I say,Hey, its Zach. Been a while. What you been up to?(FYI, this also really increases the likelihood you will get the D again, so it really behooves you to reintroduce yourself and reference the last time you saw one another.)17. Make sure you're texting the right personLike making sure the person youre texting knows who you are, it may also be a good idea to make sure youre sending the right text to the right person. Theres nothing more embarrassing than trying to reconnect with a hookup and accidentally texting the wrong one. Its embarrassing for everyone, and could also be hurtful if handled insensitively.18. Text him the moment you know youre running lateLets say you have a date with a guy. One of the most annoying texts to receive is aHey, running late. But its significantly more annoying to receive that text 4 minutes after the proposed meetup time. The moment you know youre running late, (which should be at least 20 minutes before the date, if not more), let your date know. Also let him knowhowlate. Theres a big difference between twiddling your thumbs at the bar alone for 5 minutes and 30 minutes.19. Dont text when youre hanging out with someoneThis is a little different than the other tidbits of texting advice Ive given because it doesnt have to do with the actual texts themselves, but its still important. If youre hanging out with friends (or on a date with someone) and youre texting other people the whole time, just know that youre being really, really rude. I hate how common its become to have your phone out at the table when youre out with someone. Can we go back to having this be considered impolite?20. Text firstI hate this idea that youre not allowed to text first. What does it even reveal, exactly??? That you like the person?? That you had fun on the date?? That you want to hang out with them again?? These are allgoodthings you want the man that you like, had fun with, and want to hang out with again to know. Playing hard to get works for sex, but then once youre got (i.e., have sex) then the game is over and hes done liking you. So text him when you want to text.21. You can call them tooJust a reminder that you text from your phone. And your phone, originally was for calling. Sometimes things are easier to do by call. (Like set up a time and place to be somewhere.) Some convos shouldnt be happening over text at all. (Like those long serious convos which I previously discussed.) Dont forget that your phone is also a goddamn phone.22. Have realistic expectationsRemember that not everyone is a texter so to speak. Even many millennials dont like texting all the damn time. So dont necessarily expect that hell want to text you every day after one date. Thats a lot for many people. You need to gauge his responses. If his responses are curt, and hes never the one to text you first, then hes probably not that into you. (Or he may want to slow things down.) You may have come off to strong. But if hes texting you back within seconds all day, then obviously you can keep texting him as much as you are. The key here is having realistic expectations (and changing how you text depending on the quality and quantity of his responses).23. Avoid emoji/reaction responsesI know the iPhone has made it easy to hold down a message and simply press like or have some other reaction to it. Likewise, it can be tempting to simply send an emoji as a response. However, if it isnt clear that the conversation is over, and your reaction doesnt leave room for a response, it can be a little frustrating. Say something!24. Spell out your wordsHey, what r u up 2? Wanna hang l8r?Were not in high school anymore. Im sorry. Maybe its the writer in me, but its probably a good idea to at least present yourself as somewhat literate. Even if youre not a good speller, and even if you can be forgiven for mixing up the your/youre fiasco, at least make an attempt to write out your words in full when youre trying to communicate.25. Utilize audio messages when you canSometimes, its nice to hear someone elses voice. There may be times when texts lead to confusion, or youre trying to set up plans, or something of the sort. Feel free to send a voice message when its appropriate, either to just say hello and let him know youre thinking about him, or sharing a story thats simply too long to text.0 Comments 0 Shares 26 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMThe GOP doesnt even try to hide how outlandish its lies are any moreLies about immigrants eating pets. Lies about the federal government not helping hurricane victims. Wild conspiracy theories about the White House controlling the weather. Hateful fictions about schools performing gender assignment surgeries. The Republican party under the malign influence of former President Donald Trump has become the party of lies and conspiracies. From QAnon and birtherism to the Big Lie about the 2020 election, the GOP has become a veritable factory of falsehoods, slander, and disinformation. Related The rights attack on trans rights is a useful dodge for its anti-abortion stand To distract voters, the right keeps saying abortion laws mean trans kids can have gender-affirming surgery at school. The flood of lies about Hurricanes Helene and Milton underscore just how serious a problem this is. Trump took every opportunity to bash the federal government for spending money meant for hurricane relief on undocumented immigrants. (Not true. In fact, thats what Trump did when he was president.) He claimed that the government was limiting help to citizens to a measly $750. (Again, not true.) He was aided by Marjorie Taylor Greenes bizarre suggestion that Democrats steered the weather for their own benefit and by Elon Musks spreading lies that the federal government was blocking emergency crews from entering the disaster area. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today All the lies did was make the emergency response that much harder, sowing distrust among the people who most needed the help but that was the goal of the lies. The only credit that Trump wants is for himself. He has to discredit everyone else, even if that means harming people who support him. Remember that Trump said I alone can fix the nations problems. That means he is the only source of salvation. Getting people to accept his lies is how Trump tests loyalty. He can tell the most outlandish lies like how his 2017 inauguration had the largest crowd ever in part to protect his ego but also to test how far people will go to support him. At first, his lying was met with a mixture of bemused tolerance, but over time the lies grew bolder and bolder, culminating in the lie about the 2020 election result. By now, people who once knew better looking at you, J.D. Vance suddenly began bolstering Trumps lie. Indeed, in a New York Times interview last week, Vance refused not once but five times to answer whether Trump lost the election. Hes not alone in that. House Speaker Mike Johnson refused to answer the question as well, saying it was a gotcha question. Actually, its a true/false question. But the only source of truth in the Republican party now is Donald Trump, a notorious liar who is exhibiting signs of cognitive decline. The truth is what Donald Trump says it is. If Trump says that he won in 2020, Republicans will back him up. If he says that schools are performing gender assignment surgeries without parental consent, no one will push back. If he says the federal government is spending money on undocumented immigrants that it should be spending on Americans, Republicans will just swallow it (unless its their district thats getting hurt). The overall effect isnt just flooding the nation with lies. Trump and his fellow Republicans are systematically destroying the nations belief in truth and in experts. Medical experts already took a hit during the pandemic. But now, by creating demonstrably gaudy lies, every expert and truth itself is under siege. [W]hat feels novel in the aftermath of this months hurricanes is how the people doing the lying arent even trying to hide the provenance of their bullshit, Charlie Warzel wrote in The Atlantic. Similarly, those sharing the lies are happy to admit that they do not care whether what theyre pushing is real or not. Thus, we have a vice presidential candidate saying, If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then thats what Im going to do. Vance was talking about pet-eating Haitians, but it could apply to anything that comes out of his mouth. (Not that hes been overly concerned about suffering Americans, especially women, based on his voting record.)The upshot is that we now have a significant segment of society that distrusts its basic institutions: government, medicine, schools. Thats intentional on the part of Republicans, of course. They want to control all of the institutions so that they comport solely with the partys view. So the lies to undermine the institutions, indeed reality itself, will never stop. The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears, George Orwell wrote in 1984. It was their final, most essential command. It is the command that Trump and the Republican party now demand of its adherents. Unfortunately, even if Trump loses the election which he will never acknowledge Truth will remain irreparably damaged, and with it, Democracy itself. Rowling (@jk_rowling) October 10, 2024It is not necessarily clear that Butlins even supports allowing trans folks to use whichever restroom theyd like, as the company also made clear to the media the guards were removed due to the way they violently handled the situation and not due to the victims genders. The incident occurred earlier this month at the Bang Face music festival, which took place at a Butlins property. Trans attendee Jae Roberts posted a video to Instagram alleging that a security guard followed someone into the womens bathroom because they had facial hair and told them they could not be there. Everyone in the toilets responded with it was perfectly fine for that person to be there, Roberts reportedly said in a video that has now been made private. They were not in any way threatened by this person. They were not in any way inconvenienced by this person. Roberts said the security guard then left and returned with a larger group of guards. They then allegedly attacked five trans folks, including Roberts, pinning them against walls and dragging them down the stairs. This is appalling behavior from the security guards and an obvious display of transphobia, not to mention a completely unprovoked act of aggression and escalation, a situation where no one felt threatened, no one had any kind of issue, Roberts said. Rowlings transphobia has continued to grow over the past several years, with the Harry Potter author even recently revealing that she considers her opposition to trans equality her religion. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMRight-wing pundit says Obama talks to men like an effeminate soy boyTrump-loving anti-LGBTQ+ radio host and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk called Barack Obama a low testosterone soy boy after the former president appeared in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to support Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris. Kirk said Obamas speech was the most femboy, effeminate, low testosterone, soy boy approach on how to talk to men, parroting the Trump campaigns obsession with stereotypical masculinity. Related Trump advisor gives bizarre dating tips to alpha men after Fox host calls him a sexual matador That video needs to come with a warning for people that are easily nauseated. He also added that Obama is not exactly a great example of an American strong man.Kirk also criticized Obamas body language, saying he is in the corner, kind of just slunched over. Donald Trump and his running mate Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) have positioned themselves as strongman candidates who will protect women by upholding conservative gender roles. The entire extreme right, it seems, has exploded with denigrations of so-called beta males and praise for traditional versions of alpha males. Fox host Jesse Watters, for example, consistently attacks the masculinity of Democratic men when they do basic things likeuse straws. In August, he criticized Democratic vice presidential candidate,Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D),for the wayhe waves, saying, Men should not move this way. Its not the way we move, before accusing him of having a crush on Kamala Harriss husband, Doug Emhoff. In February, Watters attacked Biden for eating ice cream, saying [Its] just not a good look.Last week, Trump called longtime radio personality Howard Stern a beta male for making a fool of himself on his low-rated radio show when he interviewed Lyin Kamala Harris, and hit her with so many softball questions that even she was embarrassed. Kirks insults toward Obama were likely referring to a speech the former president made at a Harris field office. During his speech, Obama spoke directly to Black male voters about the importance of supporting Harris amid reports that her popularity among this group remains relatively low. Youre thinking about sitting out or supporting somebody who has a history of denigrating you, because you think thats a sign of strength, because thats what being a man is? Putting women down? Obama said. Thats not acceptable. Youre coming up with all kinds of reasons and excuses, Ive got a problem with that. Because part of it makes me think and Im speaking to men directly part of it makes me think that, well, you just arent feeling the idea of having a woman as president, and youre coming up with other alternatives and other reasons for that.Obama then slammed Trumps vision of masculinity. And by the way, Im sorry, gentlemen, Ive noticed this, especially with some men who seem to think Trumps behavior of bullying and putting people down is a sign of strength. And I am here to tell you that is not what real strength is. It never has been, Obama said.Real strength is about working hard and carrying a heavy load without complaining, Obama added. Real strength is about taking responsibility for your actions and telling the truth even when its inconvenient. Real strength is about helping people who need it and standing up for those who cant always stand up for themselves. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMPope Francis meets with trans activists after denouncing gender-affirming carePope Francis on Saturday met with a group of LGBTQ+ activists and allies who encouraged him to overturn the Catholic Churchs ban on gender-affirming care for transgender people.I really wanted to share with Pope Francis about the joy that I have being a transgender Catholic person, Michael Sennett, who took part in the meeting, told Reuters. WWW.PRIDE.COM20 tips for happier, healthier bottomingWhether you're an experienced bottom or a newbie, these tips could come in handy. As gay men, a good portion of some of our lives will be dedicated to the art and craft of anal sex. At its best, bottoming is a mind-blowing and carnal experience that feels really good. At its worst, it is painful and unpleasant. Clearly, there is a right and wrong way to do it, and a learning curve few guys start off as bottoming champions. You need years of practice, and sometimes you need tips from someone who knows what he is doing. The tips in this slideshow progress from beginner bottoms to more advanced bottoms, so if you are just beginning your magical bottoming journey, the advice at the beginning may be more useful to you than those in the back. Enjoy the ride. 1. Ask for adviceIf you're newer to bottoming, it's natural and almost required to have a bunch of questions on how it works. The fact that you're here in the first place is an indication of your curiosity, whether just for the first time or if you're looking to take your bottoming a little deeper (no pun intended.)Fortunately, outside of research that you do on your own, there are plenty of people who are ready and willing to answer your questions to make sure you're doing things correctly. There's a lot of shame surrounding the world of bottoming, and it can feel intimidating to sort out the mess of who's actually worth talking to.TikTok and Instagram accounts like the Bottom Digest and Doctor Carlton also offer a lot of advice on being a successful bottom, so feel free to turn to social media or further answers outside of this article for any questions you may still have.2. Educate yourself on the anatomy of the anusThis seems maybe counterintuitive and perhaps a little gross, but its important to understand what youre working with down there before you start working with it.Most people consider the anus an exit only, but there is plenty of information out there on ways to make it pleasurable upon entrance. Youre obviously already in a good place to learn, but take some time researching your body to really understand how it works.3. Consent is sexySometimes, youre not in the mood to be on the bottom. However, there can be pressure to perform, even when you dont want to. If you feel any pressure or discomfort, dont be afraid to say no.There are tops out there who will continue to pressure you, but do your best to stand your ground. Sex needs to be enjoyable for both parties, and if you let someone violate you once, its only a matter of time before you start to grow more bitter toward it.4. Consume high amounts of fiber. One of the most prominent rules of gay sex applies to bottoms of all calibers: watch what you eat. My vegetarian friends say that they hardly need to clean before sex they simply use the bathroom and are good to go. This is because they consume a high fiber diet, which cleanses the colon. Meat-eaters like myself benefit from fiber regimens like daily Metamucil or Benefiber to keep our runways clear. In my experience, the best fiber regimens are those that come in powder form that you mix in a glass of water, and most contain psyllium husk a natural fiber with multiple health benefits. Sugar-free psyllium husk fiber can be purchased on its own, and I have even seen it sold in capsule form. I have not had the same good results from fiber capsules as I have from Metamucil, but some guys might. Metamucil is part of my daily routine. Fiber is extremely good for you, and when it comes time to clean out your butt for sex, your stools will be compact and together, making cleaning considerably easier. Loose, runny stool is a nightmare to clean out. Too much fiber can dehydrate you and cause cramps and hemorrhoids, so do not take more than the recommend dose. Make sure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated something every healthy person should do anyway.5. Find a cleaning regimen that works for you. Some guys can simply tell when theyre good. These men have an uncanny ability to just know without a shadow of doubt that their colons are clear and ready for a pounding, no douching required. These men are mysteries to me. I respect them the way I respect firefighters and contortionists. I cannot quite believe they can do what they do, but they do it nevertheless. I always have to make sure things are good down there before having sex. Some guys do a pre-sex check with a lubed finger, but I do not trust my fingers, which are shorter than most of dicks I want to take. So while a finger check might be convincing for some, I always fear there may be stuff further up. This is why I almost always clean out beforehand. Lets face a fact: douching, using an enema, and frequently cleaning out the ass would probably be frowned upon by most healthcare specialists. Some consider it an acceptable occasional practice to relieve constipation, but most would frown at the idea of douching as frequently as every week (or more). I choose to clean frequently because I like to have mess-free anal sex, and have not had any problems from excessive douching. Many straight people have this idea that gay sex is a messy affair, but as Dan Savage wrote in his book American Savage, You dont have anal sex with an ass full of shit for the same reason that you dont have oral sex with a mouth full of food. Because its uncomfortable and it makes a mess. Most guys have different cleaning methods depending on the kind of sex they want to have. Most guys begin cleaning in the shower with water and a finger, and for some that is enough. Many guys move on to using a douching bulb or enema. This works for most guys too, although douching bulbs and enemas will not clean your ass as deeply and thoroughly as hoses and shower attachments can. I use a hose a shower attachment with a short, smooth nozzle with slightly warm water and low pressure (high pressure is not recommended ouch). These different cleaning methods have different benefits and different risks which I will go into in the following slides. 6. If you clean out with a douching bulb or enema, take your time. You should never rush the cleaning process, especially if you are a beginner. Cleaning out is more than putting water up your butt. Good cleaning is also about relaxing your ass muscles and getting comfortable with the feeling of being penetrated before you start play. The brand Colt makes great douches and cleaning devices, and their products can be found at most sex stores, and they are not too expensive. A good douching bulb will have a large rubber bulb and a smooth plastic nozzle. If you use one in the shower, lube up the nozzle with silicone lube, which will not wash off in water. Gently and slowly stick the nozzle up your butt and gently, slowly squeeze the bulb. When the bulb is mostly empty of water, gently and slowly (I will repeat those two words often because all cleaning requires you to go gentle and slow) pull the nozzle out. Hold the water in your ass for a few seconds, then relax and release it into the toilet. Chances are good that you will need to do this more than once. I know some guys who are good to go after one squirt. Since I prefer rigorous sex, I will usually douche three times at least.I cannot stress this enough: take your time with cleaning. Do not rush it. Not only can you hurt yourself if you rush the process, but a rushed cleaning job will probably not get you completely clean. After some practice, you will discover a frustrating truth: whenever you think you are all set, suddenly that second anal chamber will open and you will have to douche again. If you have time, clean once, then wait about thirty minutes and clean again. 7. If you clean with a shower attachment, relax. The trick with cleaning with a douching bulb is to hold the water in your butt for a few seconds. (I do body squats in the shower to push the water up a little deeper.) That same rule of thumb does not apply to cleaning out with a hose or shower attachment. When you use a hose, relax your ass and let the water run out freely. Do not try to hold it in. Make sure the water is moderately warm, not hot, and relax your butt. Hold the nozzle in for a few seconds, allowing the water to run out gently, then pull the nozzle out. Repeat until clean.Douching with a shower attachment gets me a more thorough clean, typically faster than with an enema. I have experimented with different nozzles, but generally the basic plastic or metal douching nozzle that you get from a sex supply store works great. I stole my first nozzle (a smooth, stainless steel one) from a shower room at the Armory in San Francisco the filming studios for Kink.com (sorry guys). Since then, I have used nozzles that are longer, slender, and made of smooth PVC or rubber that clean deeper. I must caution that these are for more advanced bottoms. Deep cleaning is not without its health risks (more so than cleaning your ass with an enema) but it gets me better prepared for hours of hard sex, ass play with big toys, and fisting. 8. Train your butt with toys. I have a delightful condition I call classic bottom syndrome. I have learned to enjoy the feeling of getting fucked and having stuff in my butt so much that my brain now links orgasm with anal. You could say that my pleasure focus point has shifted from my dick to my butt. I admittedly do not masturbate as much as I used to, and it takes me much longer to cum when I do not have something in me.Not only are anal prostate orgasms more intense for men, but some, like myself, learn to love the feeling of the anal spinchter (the circular muscle that opens and closes at the base of the colon, which is clenched tight and shut for most of your life and opens when you have to use the bathroom) opening around an object, whether it be a penis, a butt plug, or hand. The opening and closing of this muscle on its own can be very erotic. I discovered this sensation through toy play. Gay sex tends to focus only on the prostate, since a good top is basically rubbing the prostate with his dick. When my ex-boyfriend and I decided to start playing with toys, I discovered sensations that I had never experienced before. He started pushing a small butt plug in my ass during foreplay, and I learned that the feeling of being opened can be just as intense as being fucked. Toy play has made me a better bottom and, for many guys, is the gateway to becoming more comfortable with sex. Toys open you up and get you used to the feeling of penetration at your own speed. 9. Avoid those ultra-realistic dildos in sex toy shops. Most of the veiny, ultra-realistic dildos in sex toy stores are not designed for anal. Most of them are too hard, and many of them have a rough, porous texture. These are novelty items. You might purchase one because it was modeled after your favorite porn stars massive, 12 dick, but it is probably not something you want in your butt. Those synthetic, sculpted veins can be sharp and very painful. Remember that the colon is lined with thin, delicate tissue that is easily torn and punctured. Smooth toys work best. 10. Experiment with lubes until you find your favorite. My favorite lube is Pjur Back Door silicone lube. I know this after experimenting with every kind of lube imaginable, from lotions to kitchen ingredients to Elbow Grease and more. Browse my list of must-try lubes in 30 Liquid Assets Every Gay Man Should Know. A good lube makes a big difference. Many guys prefer spit I do but spit typically will not work for rough sex or extended play. When I go hard, I use silicone lube. Silicone lube is messy and stays slick forever, meaning it can sometimes present clean-up problems (avoid touching door handles), but it works fine with latex and non-latex condoms and keeps your ass lubed up longer than water-based lube. Silicone lube can also be used in the shower, since it will not wash off with water, meaning you can use it for douching and for shower sex. 11. Know your allergies.I have a latex allergy. This means that when have sex with condoms, I use SKYN non-latex condoms [https://us.skyncondoms.com/products/#skyn-large], which are just as effective at latex condoms at preventing STIs. When I get fisted, I use non-latex gloves. My sex life did not really begin until a friend told me he has a latex allergy and suggested maybe that was my problem as well. The very next day, I went out and bought my first box of non-latex condoms. My life was changed. Latex allergies are more common than you might realize. If you are repeatedly having uncomfortable sex and your hole feels like it is burning or badly irritated every time you use latex condoms, try a non-latex condom made of Polyisoprene (read: not condoms made from lambskin, which does not protect against STIs, just pregnancy). 12. Be less paranoid about poop.It took me a long time to stop asking guys during sex to pull out and check their penises for shit. Few of them would have cared if there was any, but I did. In my mind, I could not imagine having sex with a dirty hole. This paranoia has ruined sex for me several times in my life and frustrated tops who knew what they were getting into literally. It is butt sex, after all, and if you do it enough, you are at some point going to encounter traces of that other thing the ass does. The best tops may prefer a clean hole, but most of them know that sometimes the body behaves outside of ones control even after an hour of cleaning. Whether you are a total top or a total bottom or totally versatile, be less afraid of shit. Its going to happen.13. Red means stop. Keep an eye out for blood. Every time you have anal sex, you get micro-fissures. These are tiny tears that may not bleed at all and will probably not cause any pain, but they are still gateways for HIV transmission. However, when you see red, it is a sign that you have gone too rough or perhaps have not used enough lube, and it is time to stop. If you are a recreational bottom, this will happen at some point in your life. Do not live in fear of bleeding stress and sex phobia are more unhealthy than most other ailments but know that your likelihood for anal injury is higher if you are a cock-loving bitch who loves getting pounded. Im a cock-loving bitch who loves getting pounded, and I have had anal fissures more than once in my life. An anal fissure is a non-serious rectal tear that takes a frustratingly long time to heal usually several months but is generally not considered any more severe than a hemorrhoid. Again, fiber will aid the healing process of both these common ailments that befall bottoms. While anal fissures are quite common, some ass injuries can require a trip to the hospital. If you puncture your colon or are bleeding badly and in extreme pain, get yourself to an Emergency Room as soon as possible. Ass injuries are not to be scoffed at. But I must also stress that if you have smart, sane, and consensual sex, and only push your limits within reason without exceeding your abilities, you can enjoy bottoming for years without problems. 14. Bareback bottoms should get tested regularly. We now live in an age when PrEP gives HIV-negative men and women extra precaution against HIV transmission a precaution that, according to every statistic available, is more dependable than regular condom use. But while PrEP has the potential to lower HIV transmission rates among the people who can get access to the costly medication, rates for other STIs like chlamydia and gonorrhea and syphilis are soaring among gay men. I do not shame barebacking because most of my sex is bare and condom-less. I am a piggy guy who loves male bodily fluids cum, sweat, piss, spit, in that order but I also know my sex practices involve STI infection. Most clinics and LGBT centers say that sexually active gay men should receive a full-range testing every three months. Since I am having regular bareback sex, I get tested every month, no exceptions. Getting tested every month is not a preventative healthcare practice, but a responsive one. While I agree that most responsive healthcare regimens are less healthy in the long run than preventative care our overmedicated society is evidence of that I concede here that monthly STI testing and PrEP jointly face a present reality: gay men are having bareback sex, and lots of it. The thinking goes that if you get tested regularly for everything then you will catch STIs and treat them before they become bigger problems (and lets face it, if you are a sexually active gay man, you are going to get an STI at least once in your life). This thinking does not work so well for HIV, since HIV can stay in the body for months before it registers on an HIV test, during which time the virus is very transmissible. But for men on PrEP who make the decision not to use condoms, monthly testing is the minimum degree of self-care that you should practice. While bareback pigs frequently incur shaming and anger from people both in and outside the gay community, stigmatizing a lifestyle does little to address its reality. Barebacking is in, and the vast majority of homos I know do it. This fact is probably a nightmare to public health workers and a damning picture of gay promiscuity to sex-phobic and homophobic people all over the world, but neither of those opinions change the fact that many of us (I am tempted to say most) are fucking bare and not apologizing for it. So rather than cast blame, the wisest response is for me and every health care worker and conscientious gay man to urge guys who bareback to get tested as frequently as possible.15. If you want to be a cum dump, do it the right way. The previous slide automatically leads to my next topic: being a cum dump. Being a cum dump means different things to different guys, but generally a cum dump is a guy who, for a certain, predetermined amount of time, takes anonymous loads in the ass from as many guys as possible. Cum itself for many guys is the fetish, so being a cum dump kind of the ultimate goal for someone who fetishizes cum itself. Some guys take this to risky extremes and will stay blindfolded on a bed in a hotel room with the door unlocked for a day or two (not recommended, since this can lead to bodily harm and loss of valuables and property). For others, being a cum dump may simply mean being a bareback bottom at an orgy or going to a bathhouse or sex club and taking as many loads as possible. Whatever being a cum dump means to you, if you choose to do it, plan in advance to receive a full-range testing two weeks after and a few weeks after that. If you are planning to be a cum dump for a lengthy amount of time, you may need to clean deeply (with a hose or shower attachment) and, if you decide to be a cum dump away from home and the privacy of your home bathroom, you may want to carry a douching bulb with you for emergency trips to the nearest restroom.16. Anti-diarrhea treatments will keep you clean most of the time. There is a trick I learned at the Folsom Street Fair a couple years ago. If you take Imodium or some anti-diarrhea treatment (and you do not, in fact, have diarrhea) it will stop everything. After cleaning once or twice, the treatment will stop your bodys poop-making processes, especially if you take the maximum dosage, and keep you clean for a long, wild evening. Different gay men have argued the health benefits of doing this. It is probably not the best thing to do, but neither is excessive cleaning or really rough sex, which can cause hemorrhoids and fissures and other ailments. Gay men do not always make the healthiest choices in fact, my experience shows that we tend to make a lot of unhealthy ones but we have perfected the art of fucking. There is a caveat to this trick: it might not work perfectly. While I have generally had good success with Imodium, over-dosage has messed up my stomach and actually caused me to have a bowel movement. It can make you feel cramped and give you a stomachache, especially if you eat food after taking it. My backup plan is to always carry a douche in a drawstring bag, but this is not always doable. I have cleaned in strange places in the bathrooms of clubs and bathhouses, in the showers at truck stops, and once in the bar owners apartment over the club (the music was pounding through the floor below). 17. If you want to get fisted, do it the right way. Fisting inserting the whole hand into the anus tends to draw gasps from people who are not into it, gay men included. Regardless, fisting is one of the most intimate and erotic sex practices I have ever experienced. Guys into fisting understand pleasure and ass limits in a way that few others do, and theirs is a fraternity unified by red socks and red hankies and a gleeful love of all things ass. There are many books and websites on how to fist properly Fist Me! The Complete Guide To Fisting by Stephan Niederwieser is a great one but the biggest challenge for someone with dreams of being a fisting bottom is the hours of patience and practice that must come before he finally pushes past the knuckle. You will probably not take his fist the first time you try, and that should not be your goal. Get comfortable, first and foremost, with getting fucked. Then start with anal toys, gradually working up to larger and larger sizes. When you feel you are ready to get fisted, only do it with someone with years of fisting experience. You do not want an amateur or beginner playing in your butt. Not only is getting fisted a sensory overload, but it requires more trust and vulnerability than perhaps any other sex act (with the exception of various kink and BDSM scenes). Improper fisting can cause severe rectal damage and send you to the hospital, so only explore fisting with someone who knows what they are doing and someone who is sober.Go slowly and use lots of lube. You cannot use too much lube in fisting. While Crisco is certainly the most old-school fisting lube, J-Lube and the French product Fist Powder Tech are also recommended. Try different lubes to figure out which one you like the most. 18. Know the risks to bottoming on drugs.Sex drugs are invariably part of our world, so it would be a disservice for me to say Dont do drugs and let that be the end of it. I am not sweepingly anti-drug, although I believe certain substances heroin, meth should be avoided. Drugs come with a plethora of risks all on their own. They can lower your ability to fight infection, may diminish the efficacy of your antiretroviral medication, and can obviously cause severe addictions along with a slew of harmful side effects. You will probably do drugs at some point in your life, or have staggeringly drunken nights, or both. If you choose to have sex on any drug or mild-altering substance alcohol being one of them know that substances can limit your ability to detect pain or know when your butt has had enough. I have friends that have used drugs to push their ass boundaries, gone too far, and wound up in the hospital. And I know at least two fisting bottoms who died of drug overdose at very young ages. If you choose to do drugs, remember that the most common sex drugs Ecstasy, Molly, GHB, and the like will act as accelerants. They will probably affect your stomach, especially if you have not eaten, and quite commonly will make you have a bowel movement. If you are able to carry a douche or enema with you, you might want to at least do a squirt after you take a hit. I must stress that regardless what you choose to do, sharing needles and injecting any substance into your body is an extremely high-risk practice that invites Hepatitis, HIV, and other infections. Steer clear of injection drugs.19. Work with your tops. Some tops like a submissive bottom, others like a dominant one. You will only learn this through communication so communicate! Even if you are not versatile sexually, there are many benefits to being a versatile bottom, able to ride it when he is feeling tired and able to shut up and take it when he is feeling rough and in charge. There are different exercises you can do to train your hip muscles and lower back muscles to make you a better bottom. Some great ones are covered in David Artavias article 9 Exercises Guaranteed To Make You A Better Bottom on Gayety. I would also add that, since the spinchter is itself a circular muscle that can be stretched and exercised like all other muscles in the body, certain ass-training toys like kegel balls, Ben Wa balls, and smooth butt plugs can be used to exercise your hole and make it better at opening and clenching. There is this absurd idea that bottoms do not do any of the work in sex, which is false. Not only do bottoms typically have to clean out beforehand, but we also set the tone and speed of sex and control its advancement. Good sex is about exchanging power and playing with different degrees of dominance and submission. You must read each others body language and please each other in different ways. Part of your job as a bottom is to take the dick, but the other part is to please him and give him attention. This second task has no pointers or rules, because every top is different and has different things that get him off.20. Celebrate being a bottom! There is a lot of bottom shaming in the world. Invariably bottoms are the ones that get teased and mocked the most in gay discourse, and tops glorified. There is a very ugly, misogynist, heteronormative reason for this that invariably comes from the idea that guys who fuck are a step closer to being straight and even male while guys who get fucked are automatically feminized, degraded, gayer, and a step closer to women. The deeply misogynist and homophobic tones of this discourse should not be surprising, since misogyny is no stranger to gay culture and some of the worst homophobes in the world are gay men who direct this hatred at themselves and their own kind. When I first came out of the closet, I announced myself as a top. I did this so that the straight men around me would see me closer to being an equal. I was afraid of femininity and afraid of what I perceived as gay stereotypes and flamboyance, and I did everything I could to appear differently including calling guys bro and topping only (badly, I might add). My topping phase lasted through two brief college relationships before I accepted a truth that I had known all along: I was a bottom. And not just any kind of bottom. I wanted to be unable to sit afterward. I masturbated to the idea of using Preparation H after a rough night to decrease the swelling. I wanted my hole wrecked. When I finally tried to carry out these fantasies, I could not take anything bigger than a pinky finger. But I worked at it and learned by body and made mistakes, and now I can enjoy hours of marathon sex and go exercising the next day no Preparation H required. I am a bottom without shame or apology. I love my butt, I love men, and I love men being in my butt. The next time you go hunting, do so with confidence and self-love. You are not lucky to find a good top a good top is lucky to find you.0 Comments 0 Shares 28 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMThe 15 best LGBTQ+ coming-of-age moviesDid your fave make the list?Coming-of-age films can remind us of the best and the worst of times about growing up and getting older. Sometimes, things work out great, and other times, life has other plans.Heres a list of 15 coming-of-age movies that feature gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or otherwise queer protagonists who are still in their teens and just trying to figure it all out.15. The Way He LooksTwo boys discover their sexuality in this incredibly sweet coming-of-age tale from Brazil Leonardo is a blind teenager who is craving his independence. His life is turned upside down when Gabriel enters his life. At first, Leo's best friend Giovana is interested in pursuing a romance with Gabriel, but instead, the two boys slowly become closer unexpected romance blossoms between them. 14. Three Months (2022)Caleb, played by Australian pop star Troye Sivan, is a South Florida teen who likes the simple things: His weed, his camera, and his grandma. The night before his high school graduation, however, he discovers hes been exposed to HIV. He spends the following summer finding love in unexpected places as he waits for his results. 13. Cruel Intentions (1999)My, my, Cruel Intentions is one saucy coming-of-age film. This movie, which features an iconic lesbian kiss between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair, was sexy, diabolical, and downright delicious fun. The film is also based on a French epistolary novel called Les Liaison dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, originally published in four volumes in 1782, in which two amoral lovers-turned-rivals who amuse themselves by ruining others and who ultimately destroy each other. 12. Crush (2022)High school crushes are hard, and when aspiring artist Paige joins her high school track team to impress her crush, she gets more than she bargained for when the coach assigns her a partner, A.J., and she finds out what true love feels like. This Hulu original examines the difference between love and a little crush from a high schoolers perspective with witty and snappy dialogue.11. My First SummerAfter her mothers death, 16-year-old Claudia isolates herself and hides away on a remote property. Grace, a local teen, appears in her garden, and the two find a much needed love and support in each other. Hailed as an outstanding debut from writer/director Katie Found, the romance between Claudia and Grace is sensitive, sweet, and uplifting all at the same time.10. Booksmart (2019)In this raunchy comedy, Amy and Molly hope to make up for their time spent focused on school with one wild night of partying before graduation. Unlike many of the other movies on this list, Booksmart treats Amy's sexuality as matter-of-fact as she spends the film pursuing a girl she has a crush on. Filled to the brim with zany characters and delivering one quotable line after another, it's one of the most distinct high school comedies to be released in the 2010s. The friendship between the two leads is at the heart of the movie though, and their chemistry is what makes this a modern teen classic.9. My Own Private Idaho (1991)Gus Van Sant's cult classic is widely regarded as a landmark in queer cinema of the late twentieth century. The film features electric performances from River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves, as it follows Mike and Scott as they embark on a search for Mike's mother, learning about one another along the way. It's a touching and at times brutally honest tale of transitioning from one phase of life to another and it doesn't pull any of its narrative punches. Though its Shakesphere-inspired story is relatively tame by today's standards, its subject matter and style were innovative at the time and opened the door for several later films on this list.8. Boys Don't Cry (1999)Hilary Swank won an Oscar for her portrayal of real-life transgender man Brandon Teena in this retelling of the final months of his life. When he befriends Lana, the two fall in love despite the extreme bigotry surrounding them. Notably, it was one of the first films with a transgender protagonist to reach a mainstream audience and find box office success. It succeeds by portraying Brandon not as a token trans character, but as a fleshed-out one with his own wants, needs, and characteristics. It's a rough film, and some elements of it may not have aged very well, but that doesn't erase its place in LGBTQ+ film history.7. Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013)Clocking in at three hours, Blue Is the Warmest Color is certainly a slow burn, but one that cares about and revels in its central characters. The movie centers on the young love between the young Adele and the artistic blue-haired Emma. Director Abdellatif Kechiche places the audience right in the center of the whirlwind romance with stunning visuals to highlight the emotional depths the film dives into. It manages to be a gorgeously sincere look at two young girls in love while never feeling overly sentimental. The fervency between the two leads is palpable as the radiant performances and superb cinematography work together to craft an utterly unique vision.6. Mysterious Skin (2004)Mysterious Skin tells the parallel story of UFO enthusiast Brian and teenage gay call boy Neil who share a painful event from the past. The two deal with their trauma in vastly different ways as Brian attempts to find the truth in alien abduction theories and Neil tries to find fulfillment in New York. Although it's a particularly harrowing film, it treats its themes and content with the greatest care, crafting a beautiful and ultimately uplifting story. Featuring a marvelous early career performance from Joseph Gordon-Levitt, it's a hidden gem that's hard to watch but truly thought-provoking. 5. God's Own Country (2017)This British indie flew under the radar when it premiered in 2017, which is a shame since it's one of the year's best films. It tells the story of Johnny, a depressed alcoholic farmhand who begins to rethink his life when he meets and begins to fall for Jorge. A poignant romance wrapped up in a gritty setting, this juxtaposition sets the stage for the raw passion of the leads' relationship as it develops over the course of the film. Despite the muddy backdrop, it's ultimately a story of learning how to love oneself, as well as another, and the beauty, is hidden underneath the muck. 4. Pariah (2011)A deeply personal film, Pariah is writer/director Dee Rees's semi-autobiographical story of self-discovery. Alike is a young poet who has recently come to terms with her attraction to women and her preference to present herself androgynously. While she has supportive friends, her parents struggle with her changing identity. It presents familiar themes in a fresh way as Alike juggles her true self with her relationship with her family. That said, every character is written and played with a degree of empathy, never outright villainizing her parents for their views and helping us to understand how difficult Alike's struggle is. Equal parts heartbreaking and inspiring, Pariah manages to tap into the most human elements of coming out.3. Love, Simon (2018)When Love, Simon debuted in 2018, it was the first film from a major Hollywood studio to focus on gay teen romance and it made quite a splash. Simon is a secretly gay high school student who finds solace in a pen pal named Blue. The two come out to each other and Simon begins to have feelings for him even though he has no idea who he's talking to. It manages to tap into the anxieties of coming out with more than enough charm, humor, and sincerity to go around. Just as groundbreaking as it is heartwarming, Love, Simon is one of the most important LGBTQ+ movies of the 2010s.2. Call Me By Your Name (2017)Based on Andr Aciman's novel by the same name, Call Me by Your Name follows seventeen-year-old Elio over a single summer in Italy. He falls for the artistic grad student Oliver and the two begin to bond and eventually have a passionate summer fling. Despite telling an admittedly simple story, the emotions are raw and true and Timothe Chalamet's phenomenal performance is a masterpiece unto itself. Director Luca Guadagnino captures the frenzied intimacy of first love with gusto with every shot more evocative than the last. The movie lives and breathes as it follows Elio on his journey and it will stay with you long after your first viewing.1. Moonlight (2016)As the first Best Picture winner to feature LGBTQ+ themes, Barry Jenkins' dazzling portrait of a young man growing up black and gay was the only choice for our top spot. It depicts the life of Chiron as he comes to terms with who he is in three parts as a youth, as a teen, and as an adult. Loaded with themes of race, sexuality, and identity, Moonlight reaches a depth that many films attempt but few are able to achieve. With a compelling hero and a singularly brilliant vision, it is a movie that transcends the life it portrays and is surely one we will be talking about for a long time to come.Honorable Mention: Get Real (1998)Honorable Mention: Alex Strangelove (2018)Honorable Mention: But I'm A Cheerleader (1999)Honorable Mention: I Killed My Mother (2009)Honorable Mention: G.B.F. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMRon DeSantis is forcing Florida colleges to remove their LGBTQ+-inclusive coursesFloridas 12 state universities are removing any classes that may distort significant historical events or teach[] identity politics in order to conform to S.B. 266, a law passed by the state legislature in 2023, which prohibits schools from spending state or federal funding on anything that advocates for diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) policies, promotes political or social activism. The law has also resulted in the shutdown of LGBTQ+ student centers and cultural support programs on campus. As a result, colleges and universities are removing classes like Anthropology of Race & Ethnicity, Introduction to LGBTQ+ Studies, Sociology of Gender, Women in Literature, Chinese calligraphy, the History of Food and Eating, Humanities Perspectives on Gender and Sexuality, Social Geography, a class on Magic, Witchcraft and Religion as well as a Social Problems class that examines issues like racial and gender inequality and crime, Politico reported. Related Ron DeSantis administration bans diversity programs in colleges Promoting diversity is discrimination, according to Ron DeSantis. The bill allows officials in the states university systems Board of Governors filled with appointees of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) to review colleges core curriculum classes for any theories that systemic racism, sexism, oppression, and privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States and were created to maintain social, political, and economic inequities. If officials find such content, the curriculum can be removed, realigned, or expanded to stop such viewpoints. Some of the classes have had their public descriptions and student outcomes changed to avoid violating the law.The Board of Governors will look over each schools proposed course listings for the 2025-26 academic year and make suggestions over which courses should altered or removed. Schools that refuse could lose vital state funding or be targeted by DeSantis and the board for other penalties.Critics have said that the law violates academic freedoms, forces colleges to accept government-approved viewpoints, will drive talented educators and students away from Floridas universities, and could even cause some schools to lose their national accreditation from groups that require DEI programs as a critical part of higher education. Other professors and department chairs have complained that the law is so broadly written that its unclear whats allowed and whats forbidden. The power to make these decisions has traditionally been left up to colleges and universities. But the law is part of DeSantis war against DEI policies and his plan to shift his states schools toward a conservative ideology.[DEI] has basically been used as a veneer to impose an ideological agenda and that is wrong, DeSantis said while signing the law in May 2023. If you want to do things like gender ideology, go to Berkeley, go to some of these other places You dont just get to take taxpayer dollars and do whatever the heck you want to do and think thats somehow OK.In 2022, DeSantis also signedthe so-called Stop WOKE Act,which forbids schools and businesses from offering educational programs onracism and gender-based discrimination. The law is currently on hold as a court considers its impact on our constitutionally protected rights to free speech. Federal Judge Mark. E. Walker, who blocked the Stop WOKE Act in 2022, called the law positively dystopian, stating that it officially bans professors from expressing disfavored viewpoints in university classrooms while permitting unfettered expression of the opposite viewpoints.Professors enjoy academic freedom so long as they express only those viewpoints of which the State approves, Walker said of the law.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMAnti-trans woman with no hair devastated when she faced anti-trans harassment herselfA woman who opposes trans equality got attention this week for complaining on social media after she got harassed by someone who thought that she was transgender. Lindsay Walter, who posts on X as Lindsay Hannah, describes herself as a runner, writer, and alopecia advocate. The 33-year-old, who is currently preparing for the 2025 London Marathon and raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK, frequently posts about living with the condition, which causes hair loss. Walter wrote.According to Walter, the woman followed her out of the bathroom and continued to shout at her that she was disgusting for being in the womens bathroom and that it was for women as others stared. I calmly say, I have Alopecia. I am a woman, but I just dont have hair, Walter recalled. Recently, it has been stirring up hatred of Haitian immigrants and U.S. citizens of Haitian descent in Ohio, with Donald Trump himself and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), claiming that they were stealing and eating their neighbors pets. Trump drew attention early in the campaign when he said that immigrants are poisoning the blood of our country, words that Democrats said were similar to those used by Adolf Hitler. Even as recently as last week, Trump was compared to Hitler for his invocation of an old law to justify mass detainments and deportations of millions of immigrants. Trump has been promising supporters that he will implement the largest deportation in U.S. history if he wins, which would involve invoking wartime powers and using the military.Moms for Liberty has been labeled an extremist organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center, a designation that the group claims is unjustified. The group got attention during the pandemic for its calls to end any support for LGBTQ+ students in schools and to ban books, with a heavy focus on those by LGBTQ+ authors or with LGBTQ+ themes.Moms for Liberty has been at the forefront of the fight against trans equality in schools, leading a major lawsuit to end Department of Education guidance that bans discrimination against trans students. In August, Trump attended a Moms for Liberty event where he claimed that schools were turning kids transgender and even said that students would go to school cisgender and then come home a few days later with an operation. This is not happening anywhere. Minors almost never have access to gender-affirming surgery, such surgery is not performed on minors without their parents involvement, and schools dont provide medical care to minors without parental consent.Despite this being a lie, Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice claimed that Trump was right to tell that lie because she claimed that schools are the ON-RAMP for gender transitioning of minor children. The organization held panel discussions at the Republican National Convention this summer.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 31 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMBill Maher says Hamas would throw Chappell Roan off a building for being gayComedian and talk show host Bill Maher slammed queer singer Chappell Roan for speaking out against Israels war in Gaza telling her she would have been thrown off a roof due to her sexuality if she had grown up in Palestine. Mahers almost nine-minute segment offered an open letter to Chappell Roan during which he accused her of succumbing to misinformation by getting her history from TikTok. Related Chappell Roan says shes voting for Kamala Harris while insisting there are problems on both sides The pop star has faced criticism for recent comments about the U.S. presidential race. You killed at Coachella this year, but when Hamas kills at a music festival, its a whole other thing, he said. Doesnt the sight of so many young women raped at a music festival make it a little personal?Chappell, if you think it was repressive growing up queer in the Midwest, try the Mideast, he continued. Youre a female drag queen and you sing: I f**ked you in the bathroom when we went to dinner, your parents at the tables. That wouldnt fly in Gaza, although you would straight off a roof. He then said the morality police would kill your feather-boa-wearing ass. He accused her of enabling terrorist organizations like the Taliban, ISIS, and Hamas by speaking out against Israels war in Gaza. Youre a singer, and youre advocating for a place and a culture you would never want to live under, he concluded. Gender may not be binary but right and wrong kind of is.While LGBTQ+ people are indeed oppressed in the region, Mahers comment specifically about being thrown off a roof may have been the result of misinformation. In December, Reuters published a fact check confirming that a 2015 video showing members of ISIS throwing people off a roof in Iraq had been incorrectly captioned as referring to Hamass actions in the current Israel-Hamas war. Roan has repeatedly spoken out against the Biden administrations role in Israels ongoing war in Gaza. During her breakthrough performance at New York Citys Governors Ball in June, she called for freedom for all oppressed people in occupied territories and has raised funds for Palestinian aid via the merch table at her shows. In September, Roan toldRolling Stonethat shed considered acceptingan invitation to perform at the White Houses Pride celebrationthis year so that she could protest the war by reading poems written by Palestinian women, but she ultimately declined.Israels treatment of Palestine has long divided the LGBTQ+ community. Israel has spent millions to tout itself internationally as the most LGBTQ+-friendly nation in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Palestine grants nearly no civil rights to its own LGBTQ+ citizens.Pro-Palestinian protestors have long accused Israel of using its LGBTQ+-inclusive policies to pinkwash its human rights violations against Palestinians. As a result, anti-queer conservatives in the U.S. often resort to homonationalism, citing Muslim-majority countries anti-LGBTQ+ policies as a pretext for racism, Islamophobia, and violence against Muslims. The American queer communitys disunity over Israel and Palestine has gained greater significance following the October 7, 2023 Hamas militant terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians, which reportedly killed 1,200 civilians and took 253 hostages.Since then, the Israeli military has killed about 38,000 Palestinians,Reuters reported in July. An estimated2.3 million people have been displaced from their homesby forced evacuations amid Israels continued attacks in Gaza. Israel was also accused of genocideby the World Courtfor its destruction of Palestinian homes, schools, hospitals, refugee camps, and vital infrastructure. An estimated half of all Palestinians in Gaza are now experiencing starvation as a result of Israels continued military action, the United Nations World Food Program has said. While queer voters worry about the harmful anti-LGBTQ+ impact of a second Trump term, a spokesperson from Queers Undermining Israeli Terrorism (QUIT) toldLGBTQ Nationin July that Biden and the Democrats are continuing to alienate voters and risk re-election by refusing to end the United States largely unconditional support of Israel.Roan recently got flak on social media for comments she made about how she believes that both sides that is, both Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have problems and therefore she wont be publicly endorsing anyone in the presidential election. She then posted a follow-up video confirming she was voting for Harris: So, hear it from my mouth if youre still wondering: No, Im not voting for Trump, and yes, I will always question those in power and those making decisions over other people, and I will stand up for whats right and what I believe in.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 31 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMLGBTQ+ rights have long been at the mercy of public opinion. This November will be no different.LGBTQ+ ballot initiatives have long been used as a wedge issue to turn out the conservative vote and to give or take away freedoms that are usually guaranteed by the government. The 2024 election is no different. This November continues a decades-long tradition of leaving LGBTQ+ civil rights up to public debate.New Yorkers will consider whether to add sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression to their anti-discrimination amendment in the state constitution. Reproductive rights are on the ballot in 10 states as well. Related LGBTQ+ protestors once stormed a conference to declare war on psychiatry. I proudly was one of them. I sat locking arms with a contingent on the floor while the psychiatrists yelled, Youre sick, youre sick you f**gots, you drag queens! And California, Colorado, and Hawaii voters will decide if their states will repeal their constitutions bans on same-sex marriage. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Same-sex unions have, in fact, always been the top issue on state referendums. 34 states have sent the question to voters since 1998, many passing state constitutional amendments against same-sex partnerships. Putting these amendments on the ballot was used as a strategy to turn out the conservative vote for George W. Bush in 2004, when 11 states passed them.Marriage equality lost at the ballot box every time until 2012, when it was put to a vote in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington and won in all of them. This followed national public opinion polls, where support for same-sex marriage crossed the 50% threshold around 2009.All states anti-marriage equality constitutional amendments were rendered invalid in 2015 with the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision, but the amendments remain in several state constitutions. As such, activists are fighting to repeal them, especially in the event the conservative-dominated Supreme Court overturns Obergefell something Justice Clarence Thomas hinted was a possibility after the court overturned Roe v Wade. Saving the childrenThe 1978 election in California introduced the first state ballot initiative related to LGBTQ+ rights. Prop 6, also known as the Briggs Initiative since it was sponsored by Orange County legislator John Briggs, garnered national attention and public denunciation from then-president Jimmy Carter (D), and even from then-California governor Ronald Reagan (R).The initiative sought to ban anyone who engaged in public homosexual activity or conduct from working in California public schools. The proposal was part of a trend of other states repealing anti-discrimination measures, inspired by anti-gay activist Anita Bryants successful 1977 Save Our Children campaign to repeal Dade County, Floridas ordinance banning discrimination based on sexual orientation, also done by popular vote. Harvey Milk helped to lead the campaign against Prop 6, which was defeated by a 16-point margin.Other state ballot initiatives have sought to legalize or ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity and voters more often sided with anti-discrimination as the years went on. In Oregon in 1988, voters revoked the governors authority to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation, and in 2018, Massachusetts voters upheld a law prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity. Maine and Oregon have most frequently put LGBTQ+ rights to a vote. In Maine, voters first blocked same-sex marriage in 2009 and then approved it in 2012, both times with 53% of the vote. Anti-discriminating protections for LGBTQ+ people in Maine were denied by referendum in 1998 and 2000 and then approved in 2005. In Oregon, voters defeated a dont say gay measure in 2000 by a 5.7% margin. The concept of using sexual orientation as a protected identity at all was also put to a vote multiple times as a conservative strategy to block homosexuality from being added to anti-discrimination ordinances. In the 1990s, the majority voted to allow sexual orientation to be a protected identityin Oregon, Idaho, and Maine. And it isnt just laws explicitly about LGBTQ+ rights that affect the community. Other ballot-driven Voter ID laws, including those in Arkansas and North Carolina, will no doubt prevent some trans folks from voting, as well as other LGBTQ+ people who are intersectionality marginalized.Regardless of ballot measures, the state representatives voters choose this election will also have a significant impact on LGBTQ+ rights. Legislatures led by publicly-elected Republicans have introduced or passed hundreds of anti-LGBTQ+ bills in recent years, including banning or limiting access to gender-affirming health care, bathrooms, accurate IDs, inclusive education, inclusive books, drag performances, and sports participation. Voting for state-level and local candidates who support LGBTQ+ rights will impact laws for years to come, even when they are not put to referendum. Vote like your rights depend on it Civil rights for other groups have also gone to public referendum dozens of times since 1868, like the question of legality of discrimination on the basis of race, sex, and disability. Like sexual orientation, voters supported discrimination in earlier years and began to support equal rights later on. Womens rights, however, gained approval in the 1970s while LGBTQ+ rights didnt see popular support until the 2000s. The decision to provide or deny civil rights is more often determined by courts and legislatures which are becoming more conservative and the idea that constitutional rights can be determined by public opinion has allowed racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination to become enshrined into law.Public opinion about LGB and transgender rights is often conflicted and in flux, so ballot measures are not a safe option for gaining rights either, though the majority do currently support anti-discrimination laws for LGBTQ+ people.Nevertheless, LGBTQ+ rights are on the ballot. As such, its essential to vote this year both on the LGBTQ+ rights referendums and for candidates who will have the power to enact pro-equality legislation. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMSuit over gender dysphoria could dismantle new disability rulesThis articlefirst appeared on Mother Jones. It has been republished with the publications permission. When the USDepartmentof Health and Human Servicesfinalized a rulein May asserting that gender dysphoriacanbe considered a disability under federal anti-discrimination laws, it codified what the overwhelming majority of courts have found for nearly a decade. The new rule put states on notice: Discrimination against transgender people in employment, education, health care, child care, housing, and elsewhere mayviolate federal disability protections, and the Biden administration was prepared to fight it.Now, ina lawsuitled byTexas Attorney General Ken Paxton, 17 states are asking a federal court to strike down the rule in its entirety, including numerous provisions that have nothing to do with trans people. This isnt a random collection of states; 15 of them have passedrestrictions on gender-affirming care, and all have embraced myriad anti-trans policies. Related Missouri experts defending gender-affirming care ban exposed as quacks One was on the stand defending convicted child rapist Jerry Sandusky. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Among the states objections to the new federal rule: They would have to expend time, money, and resources to accommodate employees with gender dysphoria, including using the pronouns that align with their identities, eliminating sex-specific dress codes, and letting employees use gender-aligned bathrooms or locker rooms.Nebraskasattorney general is concerned that his states restrictions on gender care put it at risk of disability rights complaints and federal investigations.South Dakotaobjects to the rule essentially add[ing] a new category of potentially disabled individuals whose gender care must be covered by Medicaid. But gender dysphoria is just part of the 130-page federal rule.It also protects disabled parents rights in child welfare cases and prevents hospitals fromusing disability as a factorin determining who gets care in crisis situations, such as equipment shortages during a pandemic. It addsLong Covidto the list of conditions that may constitute a disability and strengthens protections against unnecessary institutionalization, requiring that care be offered in the least restrictive setting and, ideally, in a patients community. The attack is really about the regulatory process of the federal government, and this will impact almost every interaction that a disabled person has with the services and supports that they receive.Mia Ives-Rublee, senior director of the Center for American ProgressDisability Justice InitiativeStriking down the entire rule would have wide-reaching implications for all disabled Americans and other marginalized groups who rely on federal agencies interpretations of decades-old laws to enforce their rights, says Mia Ives-Rublee, senior director of the Center for American ProgressDisability Justice Initiative. Theyre utilizing LGBTQ issues as a wedge, Ives-Rublee says. The attack is really about the regulatory process of the federal government, and this will impact almost every interaction that a disabled person has with the services and supports that they receive. The new rule pertains to two federal statutes passed decades ago to protect people with disabilities on multiple fronts. TheRehabilitation Act of 1973prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability by the federal government, federal contractors, andin itsSection 504by any organizations or employers that receive federal funds. TheAmericans with Disabilities Act(ADA), signed into law in 1990, broadened disability protections into most aspects of public life, including education, access to businesses open to the public, and public transportation. Both statutes define a disability as a physical or mental impairment thatsubstantially limits one or more major life activities. When the Rehabilitation Act and ADA were passed, gender dysphoria was not a recognized medical condition, andbothstatutesexpressly excluded transvestism, transsexualism, and gender identity disorders not resulting from physical impairments from the definition of disability. But over the decades, medical experts and courts have come to understand that for many people who identify with a gender different from the one assigned to them at birth, there can be profound psychological distress and other major negative effects in their work and social lives. In 2013,gender dysphoria was addedto theDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Since then, lawsuits by individualsthe primary way the ADA is enforcedhave forged a body of legal decisions that recognize gender dysphoria as a protected health condition and its exclusion from disability protections as discriminatory, says Ben Klein, senior director of litigation and HIV law atGLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders. The exclusion of gender dysphoria was based on obvious animus toward a disfavored group. That is a concept that judges who look at petitions have easily understoodthe bias is so clear, Klein says. The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals broke legal ground in 2022 when it became the first federal appeals courtto ruleon the issue of whether gender dysphoria could be considered a disability under federal disability protection statutes. The court determined that the basis of a gender dysphoria diagnosiswhether it causes a noticeably negative impact on daily lifedistinguishes it from the ADAs definition of gender identity disorder. (The US Supreme Courtdeclinedto hear the case in June 2023, letting the decision stand.) Lower federal courts have found, similar to the 4th Circuit, that gender dysphoria is distinct from gender identity disorder. Others have found that even if gender dysphoria is a gender identity disorder, it results from a physical impairment: a mismatch between a persons physical body and gender identity that can be remedied through gender care.In finalizing its new rulethe first administrative update to Section 504 in half a centurythe Department of Health and Human Services alluded to this body of case law, which it said has shifted the legal landscape of disability discrimination protections. But none of that matters much to the states that joined the Texas lawsuit, which was filed with little national media attention in late September. The lawsuit seizes upon the original exclusionary language in the ADA, claiming that what the medical community now considers gender dysphoria falls under the laws concept of gender identity disorder. The Biden Administration is once again abusing executive action to sidestep federal law and force unscientific, unfounded gender ideology onto the public, Paxton said in apress releaseannouncing the suit. Texas is suing because HHS has no authority to unilaterally rewrite statutory definitions and classify gender dysphoria as a disability.Beyond the gender dysphoria issue, the lawsuit also makes broad claimsabout new regulatory burdens and substantial costs associated with the rules impacts to state Medicaid programs. Alaska, Montana, and Nebraska, for instance, argue that the rules least restrictive setting requirement will be difficult to implement because of health care worker shortages and their states unique geographies. One of the goals of the ADA is to address discrimination and stereotypes, particularly about stigmatized health conditions. Gender dysphoria is the quintessential stigmatized health condition.Ben Klein, senior director of litigation and HIV law atGLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders.Klein and Ives-Rublee emphasized that both the Rehabilitation Act and ADA were written vaguely with the intent that, over the years, experts working for federal agencies would reexamine and refine the regulations implementing the statutes, as scientific and public understanding of disability evolves. When the ADA was passed, trans identity was pathologized, Klein says. One of the goals of the ADA is to address discrimination and myths and stereotypes, particularly about stigmatized health conditions, he tells me. Gender dysphoria is the quintessential stigmatized health condition. The new Texas case is just one of many avenues GOP officials are using to enforce their anti-trans beliefs. As Ivereported, Republican attorneys generalmany from the same states as in the Paxton lawsuitare also threatening major medical associations with criminal investigations for promoting trans youths access to gender care.Ives-Rublee warns that the Texas suit is also part of a multifaceted attack on the power of federal agencies to interpret civil rights laws, includingprotections for pregnant workersand access to reproductive health care. This broad conservative effort to rip the teeth out of the administrative state was emboldened by a series of Supreme Court decisions last term, including one thatended courts expected deferenceto federal agency interpretations of vague laws.Because the gender dysphoria lawsuit was filed in the federal district court in Lubbock, Texas, any appeal will go to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, home to some of the most radically conservative decisionsin recent legal history. If the 5th Circuit sides with the states in this case, it would create a conflict with the 4th Circuit decision that could force the Supreme Court, with its far-right supermajority, to weigh in. I am almost 100 percent sure this is their intention, Ives-Rublee says.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 35 Views 0 Reviews

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 18% of U.S. adults have depression.Researchers cited narriers to care for LGBTQ+ women as one source of the disparities. While 77% of the U.S. population has a primary care doctor, just over half of LGBTQ+ women do.Historically, medical spaces have not been safe for us, said Savy Elahian, lead data analyst for the report.Theres been experimentation, theres been medical racism. Its important to understand the historical impacts, especially for LGBTQ+ people of color, she said.Respondents of color were twice as likely to report they lacked access to quality health care. They also reported higher rates of disability and attempted suicide.Thirty-eight percent of respondents reported they thought they had a problem with drugs or alcohol some or most of the time, but just 6% reported having been told by a healthcare provider that was the case. Its one indication of the disconnect between LGBTQ+ women and their physicians. LGBTQ+ women and gender-diverse people are really missing out on preventative care and holistic wellness, Elahian said.Respondents were also questioned about the violence theyve experienced. 47% of queer women had survived some form of intimate partner violence, compared with 35.6% of women in general. Friends were by far their most significant resource in the aftermath versus police, who were not helpful at all in more than half the cases. One collection of data points revealed a positive disparity: Study questions about sexuality and sexual practices revealed queer women are having more sex than people in the general population, and they said their sex lives bring them significant joy and pleasure. If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. If you got to do what I do, if you got to spend your days in the presence of these young people, you would feel so positive, so optimistic, so empowered.Scroll on to meet a few of GenderCool Project's inspiring young Champions.ASHTON (he/him)When Ashton came out at the age of 12, there weren't too many resources out there accessible to a kid, especially someone who wasn't on social media or the Internet. Before he found the word transgender, he would search phrases such as girl who feels like boy or stuck in the wrong body.It wasn't necessarily something that I grew up being aware of. I just grew up feeling different than my peers and feeling like I didn't fit the mold I was supposed to, Ashton says. Growing up with Christian teachings and parents from the Dominican Republic, Ashton also says that he often reflects on whether his discomfort with his gender growing up was linked to the fact that I was a person of color, usually in predominantly white schools and spaces, and feeling othered. But he never let the discomfort define him, and wants others in his communities to know they, too, are limitless.Just because you are a person of color, have these differences, and you have an intersectional identity, doesn't mean that you can't live your life authentically like everyone else, Ashton says. After joining the Human Rights Campaign as a Youth Ambassador, and even introducing President Joe Biden at a White House Pride event, the 20-year-old now attends Yale, where he studies Political Science with a concentration in Political Psychology. Hes learned that hes passionate about storytelling and would like to continue doing it in whatever capacity that may be. One of the ways hes pursued this is through his co-authorship of A Kids Book About Being Inclusive. At the end of the day, that's what it's all about: inclusivity. Whether it's for gender identity, sexuality, religious differences, whatever it may be, Ashton says, adding, I see my advocacy not necessarily just for the LGBTQ community, but a bigger initiative of young people who are passionate about creating change in the world.REBEKAH (she/her)Rebekah has a passion for writing and sharing her experiences, which is why the co-author of A Kids Book About Being Inclusive says the project was based on our own personal stories. The goal was to explain inclusivity by putting it down to tiny examples that kids could understand.Though writing isnt the 17-year-olds only interest shes also a field hockey player for her school, which has embraced her talents. The only trouble that I faced has been within myself, Rebekah says. New Jersey has some really awesome policies around trans kids in school, but especially in sports. I have been really lucky with my coaches being willing to work with me, understand my story, and allow me to play as just a kid. My peers are some of the biggest supporters that I have.Rebekah is thinking about pursuing political science when she attends college to continue her advocacy work. While she doesnt have a specific school chosen, shes looking northeast because of safeties their pro-LGBTQ+ laws. It's been really interesting to see how my peers go about this college finding process, because they don't really have to think about their safety as much, Rebekah says. She wants to emphasize that theres no one size fits all when it comes to trans youth, which is something she wishes the adults talking about them understood. We're thriving in our communities. I think so much of the narrative isn't around that, Rebekah says. We don't think about being trans every second of every day. We don't think about being LGBTQ every single second. We're just kids, and we just want to have fun. We want to play on our sports teams. We want to get involved with school activities.Trans kids want to play sports for the fun of it, just like every other kid on the team, she adds. ADELYN (she/her/ella)Though only 16, Adelyn is currently dual-enrolled in community college classes on a pre-law track. The high school student eventually wants to focus on civil rights law, which she was drawn to by all the social injustices going on around her. In my community, not only as a trans person, not only part of the LGBTQ community, but also here where I live so close to the border, I see injustices being made towards immigrants, Adelyn says. Adelyns home state of Texas has passed some of the harshest anti-LGBTQ+ laws in the nation. While the hormone ban has gotten us pretty bad, she says she hasnt gotten the rough end of the stick, though moving did cross our minds when the laws were first enacted. When she was younger, Adelyn gave a speech at the Texas legislature in defense of trans youth. The intimidating task didnt phase her even then, as she says it was a very easy thing for me to do.I have a voice, and I get to defend myself in front of whoever it is because my parents taught me to stand up for myself, Adelyn says. Adelyn doesnt give speeches anymore out of concern for her safety, but she believes even more strongly today that being trans isnt what most people would think it is, explaining, I live a pretty normal life. If she could speak to her lawmakers now, she would tell them again to get their priorities in line. There are so many more issues going on in Texas, so many other things that need our legislators focus, Adelyn says. Re-address your focus to the issues that are actually affecting Texans day-to-day. Don't target us for your gain.DANIEL (he/him)Daniel has been in tune with his identity since childhood, and was even featured in the PBS documentary Growing Up Trans at age 9. He knew early on that he wanted to cut his hair and wear boys clothes, which his parents were extremely supportive of. At that age, I didn't really even have words for what it was I was going through. I just knew that I didn't feel right living as a girl, he said. And my parents, with their support, I was able to really become who I was meant to be.Now 19, Daniel is a student at University of Connecticut majoring in Human Rights and Womens, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. He is an honors diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) student specialist, helping to give students the foundation to understand one another, understand how intersectionality plays into our lives, and how biases may play into our lives and our understandings of others. In my college experience so far, I've really seen a lack of understanding, Daniel says. People just come from so many different backgrounds, and then they're thrown into college, and it's so much more diverse than it may have been in their high schools or their hometowns.I don't feel like our schools are doing enough to educate people about these topics, so that's really what I've been trying to do, he adds.Daniel wants to someday work with companies on DEI efforts, possibly in consulting. He hopes that the work will help others to have conversations, have discourse, be open to new ideas, opinions, and perspectives, because I feel like that's really what is lacking right now. And the first step to understanding, he says, is knowing, which is why its important to know the truth about trans youth. I'm so much more than my transgender identity. I love to go to paint club, I love to go to the gym on campus, Daniel says. Being trans is just a tiny part of me. It's impacted me so much, but I'm so much more than that.CHAZZIE (she/her)The importance of being the voice for people who feel like they don't have a voice isnt lost on Chazzie, the inspiration behind and face of GCP. After socially transitioning at the age of 9, she says it makes me really happy that I'm able to be who I am at only 18 years old.Chazzie helped found her high schools broadcasting club, where she gave reports in both English and Spanish. Shell be attending the University of Arizona in the fall for broadcast journalism, shooting for a career on camera. I hope to be one of the first transgender on-air news anchors of my generation, because there isn't a whole lot of representation of that now, Chazzie says. There's a lot of people behind the camera, but not in front of the camera. And I'm the kind of person who wants to put herself out there. The young reporter has done just that, with stories about her life being featured in several national outlets and even garnering her a GLAAD media award. Chazzie was also very fortunate to speak alongside other families of trans youth on Transgender Day of Visibility 2022 at the White House, where she hope[s] to be back soon. The message she would send to officials is simple.I am more than just a label. I am human. And seeing these high people of power use their voice to knock us down and pin this little label on to define us is really upsetting, Chazzie says. I really want people to realize that at the end of the day, I am just a teenage girl. I'm a daughter, I'm a sister, I'm a friend. And there's so much more about me than a little label.GenderCool Champions (left to right) Sivan, Daniel, Kai, Ashton, Gia, Chazzie, and Hayden at the 2022 GLAAD Media Awards.0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

In the video, Snyder sits at a bar with a glass of white wine, looking around for someone. Charli xcx's "Guess" is playing- the remix with Billie Eilish of course. Captions start popping up around Snyder reading, "She's got a boyfriend," "She's single again," and, "She's irrelevant."The final caption reading, "SHE'S HAPPY" appears as our mystery guest arrives, a woman with long hair in a taupe suit, who enters the frame and promptly gives Snyder a kiss.Snyder had previously been engaged while on Love is Blind to Izzy Zapata, only for Snyder to call it quits, leaving Zapata at the alter. Nothing more is known about the mystery woman or the pair's relationship, but the most important part is that Snyder is happy.DetoxA drag event in Chicago turned into a coming out opportunity for one popular performer, as RuPaul's Drag Race fave Detox shared with the audience that she's trans. The casual reveal came in the midst of her performing the parody song "Chow Down (at Chick-fil-A)" alongside Willam Belli. As Pink News pointed out, Detox switched up the lyric where she usually proclaims that she's a top, and instead boldly declared to the audience, "I'm trans now."The show took place on Wednesday night, a DNC (Drag Night Chicago) right alongside the DNC (Democratic National Convention). And that's no coincidence. Put on by Drag PAC, it was meant to draw attention to the issues that are facing the LGBTQ+ community and encourage young voters to get out there and vote in the upcoming election.@sethseesshows#detox #willam #dragrace #drag #rupaulsdragrace #chowdown #chickfila #chicago #metro #willambelli #dwv @The Only DetoxIlana GlazerComedian and actor Ilana Glazer officially came out as a "nonbinary woman" during an interview with The Independent in August. The realization that they're nonbinary comes in the middle of a long journey of more deeply finding her own sense of self. "It has taken me years to parse these parts of myself out, Glazer said, crediting much of the progress on this journey to years-long standing appointments for psychoanalysis three times a week. Ive found a real dedicated practice to understanding myself. I really used to believe those people [who thought I was Ilana the character] had seen these personal parts of me, but thats not true. I now understand better who I am."That better understanding of self goes deep, with Glazer now understanding herself to be a "nonbinary woman." It was their pregnancy to their now 3-year-old daughter that brought these feelings to the surface, even though, "Being pregnant on paper was the most female thing I could ever do," she says, "but it actually highlighted both the masculine and feminine inside of me." Julia FoxOn July 8 Julia Fox took to TikTok to let the world know, she's that lesbian! The actor shared a TikTok video that began with a clip of @emgwaciedawgie's viral video, where the TikTok user says "I love when I see a lesbian with their boyfriend. It's like 'Aww, you hate that man,' and then it cuts back to Fox.Fox is walking down the street and responds by saying "Hey, that was me. I was that lesbian. So sorry boys. Won't happen again."Trey CunninghamSee on InstagramUSA trackstar Trey Cunninham is officially, out, proud, and gay! The American high hurdler who is ranked 11th in the world opened up about his sexuality in an interview with The New York Times "We say our goals out loud, he said regarding how his athletic training applies to his coming out. If theres something we want to achieve, we say it. Putting something in words makes it real.Ayesha MadonSee on InstagramHeartbreak High Ayesha Madon gave us another reason to feel proud this year when she came out as bisexual in an interview with Gay Times. I only kind of properly admitted, out loud, that I was bisexual two or three years ago. It feels recent. Its pretty interesting watching myself be attracted to [girls]. My first kiss was with a girl. Ive actually never spoken about my sexuality before in anything, so this is pretty new, she shared in the interview. She went on to tell the story of that first kiss, and it's honestly so cute. My first kiss was with a girl called Louise and I had the biggest crush on her. She was in my acting class when I was like 11. I remember she was chewing gum and in order to kiss her I had to like to pretend that I wanted to like try the gum! she recalled. We kissed and it was amazing. Since then, I had the inkling, but being surrounded by so many creatives and how much more normalized its becoming. It has given me the courage to feel comfortable in that as well. Sometimes I feel like Im a fake queer person because Im not massive on queer culture, sometimes, I feel that liking girls is not enough?AmethystSee on InstagramOn July 7 RuPauls Drag Race season 15 star Amethyst sharing with the world that she is trans. The 29-year-old comedy queen from Connecticut took to Instagram to share her story in a moving, hand-written note. "The truth is, I've been struggling severely with my gender dysphoria more than ever in recent months," she wrote. "It's something that I've always concealed in the back of my mind, and through the years has slowly crept its way to the front.""Last year was when things really started to hit me hard, and this mental warfare has really just escalated since then. I let it get to a point where it was eating away at my life, my thoughts, my relationships, my confidence, but most importantly my sense of self, she revealed. I knew what needed to be addressed by always told myself that Ill get to it when Im ready. Happily, that time has finally come."I wanted to let you know that I'm trans, and began HRT [hormone replacement therapy] a little over a month ago," she continued. "Even in this short amount of time, the comparison to how I felt just a few months ago is night and day. It's a different sense of happiness that is slowly but surely bringing back my self-assurance, and every day it gets easier to look in the mirror."She also revealed her new name, Amy, which she uses out of drag, and that she thanks her season 15 sister Malaysia Babydoll Foxx for coining.Kitty SpaceSee on InstagramDrag Race France season two star Kitty Space has come out as trans, in a moving post on Instagram. My name is Kiara, she began in the caption. I'm so happy to come out as trans. It was hard, hard to hide but today I want to live free, to be happy by being myself. What I am deep inside: a woman. She went on to explain the questions that she had been asking herself in the lead-up to coming out. Living hidden while being unhappy? Where to live free and fulfilled? The question has been asked at length. Protect my loved ones who would take it badly or protect myself?"Ultimately there was only one answer for Kiara and that was to live her truth openly and proudly. I chose to protect myself. Also, protect those who hide and who do not dare. Let's live free. Its our body, our gender, our choices. Amber RuffinSee on InstagramAmber Ruffin waited until the very last day of Pride Month this year to make a big announcement and we could not be more thrilled. The comedian, writer, Tony Award nominee, and talk show host was ready to let the world know her truth: shes queer!Ruffin shared the news with her fans on Instagram, sharing a photo of her in a purple Queer tank top, along with pictures of her hanging with gay icons Murray Hill and Grimace and a video from a Pride parade. And that was a mega, mega thing for me because I for so long...I am surrounded by gays like all my friends are gay, so it wasn't that I was repressing anything, it was just that I didn't think that I could be, recalled Gunning. 'I still can't articulate it in the best way.'But I realized I was a big, old gay. I was like, That's what it's been, that's what it is. And that was like a massive moment where everything kind of clicked and I made sense of myself then, she shared. But now that shes out to herself and the world shes truly feeling great. It's been amazing, and very freeing and very grounding. I feel like really peaceful actually.Joe Fitzpatrick AKA "Dirty Bulk" BronsonOn June 2, Bronson who wrestles as one-third of the tag team the Iron Savages came out by responding to a quote-tweet chain on X (formerly Twitter) with a super cute selfie. The wrestler posted a smiling selfie and bisexual flag in response to a "you and your flag" quote-tweet chain after his fianc, pro wrestler Gabby Forza, posted a selfie of her own alongside a pansexual Pride flag.Bronson responded to all the love he's gotten online by posting a series of statements written in Apple's Notes App and posted on X. "The last 24 hours have just been so overwhelming ever since openly admitting that I am bisexual," Bronson wrote. "I've been left speechless by the endless phone calls, texts, DM's, replies from faithful fans, my close friends, our scumbag, and so many others I've had new interactions with. Between the social media response and just now getting off a 55-minute phone call with my parents that was overflowing with so much love & uplifting support I could run through a brick wall right now from how grateful I feel."He went on to talk about his wrestling costars, who have also come out. "Well, lately I've felt different. Not only have I been heavily inspired by Gabby and how proud she is to be bi/pansexual & queer, I've been inspired by so many others as well. Many of my friends & coworkers that are out and proud, and even some that are still in the closet waiting to one day feel ready."Bruce Joel RubinBruce Joel Rubin, best known as the screenwriter for the iconic supernatural romance, Ghost, just proved its NEVER too late to come out and be your full authentic self.Rubin, who is 81, shared that he was "fully gay" for the first time in his new memoir Its Only a Movie. Speaking with The Guardian Rubin shared, Ive never not been gay... I am fully gay, and I always knew it. Also very much in the know about Rubin's sexuality, his wife of 50 years, Blanche. Clearly, I held back my sexuality. My sexual life was always very internalized. Of course, one wants orgasmic life, but I had orgasms with Blanche. She and I had a good sex life, Rubin revealed, also sharing that they explored polyamory over the years. We had a conjoined relationship with a guy I liked in our ashram. She had a private moment with him, and so did I. Also, I had a few other things along the way, which I didnt write about because they might embarrass people. Its not like Ive been dead to that world. But Im happily gay. And Ill tell you something youll find out: when you hit your 80s and you think your libido is gone, it comes flying back. So big! Male beauty for me is overwhelmingly powerful. Just seeing someone in the supermarket, I feel this explosive joy.As to why Rubin decided to finally come out publically, well it was just time. I dont like that I was closeted for so long, he said. But it would just have confused people. Adding, I didnt want to leave this world with any secrets."Daniel BedingfieldSinger Daniel Bedingfield first broke through in 2001 with his hit "Gotta Get Thru This," Now the singer has opened up again, this time about the man he loved. During a performance London Palladium on April 23, Bedingfield shared his song Borderline had a queer history. I wrote this song with a man I loved about a girl we both loved, he said. In my era, you had to be gay or straight, or fuck you. He continued: Im not very gay, but we were on a hot spring, sitting on a rock, missing her.Bethany AntoniaSee on InstagramHouse of the Dragon star Bethany Antonia came out as a gay on her Instagram on April 20. While we were delighted to learn that the actor is officially fam, it wasn't the joyful coming out we would have wished for her. Antonia plays Princess Baela Targaryen in House of the Dragon. Targaryens have traditionally been depicted as white with blonde hair, and the inclusion of Black actors in these particular roles has received some racist trolling online. The racist message Antonia received was another instance of backlash against the diverse casting backlash. Antonia shared the message on her IG stories, with the caption, "Wait till they find out I'm gay too' with an emoji of a clown's face."While that troll was certainly a clown, we are still thrilled to count Antonia as a member of our rainbow family. Sophia BushSee on InstagramSophia Bush has been the subject of endless speculation ever since it was revealed last fall that she and soccer star Ashlyn Harris were dating. However, in an essay for Glamour, the One Tree Hill alum clarified that those accusations were unfounded. According to Bush, it's just a tale of two friends who supported one another through a mutually difficult time. She didn't even realize there might be more to it until other people they knew pointed it out."I don't know how else to say it other than: I didn't see it until I saw it. And I think it's very easy not to see something that's been in front of your face for a long time when you'd never looked at it as an option and you had never been looked at as an option," she said.Although Bush noted that she hates the idea of "having to come out in 2024," she did confirm that she's come to the conclusion she currently identifies as queer. And we officially welcome her with open arms to the alphabet mob!Matt Terry View this post on Instagram A post shared by Matt Terry (@mattterry) The X-Factor season 13 winner Matt Terry opened up about his sexuality for the first time with the release of his new single "His Car" on March 22. After years of speculation in the British tabloids about his sexuality, the new song details the first relationship he ever had a with a man which he kept secret.I am so ready to show who I am with my music, he said in an interview with the Gay Times. Throughout the years, Ive had media reach out and offer me money like, Well give you this much if you want to talk about your sexuality, and I would say, Absolutely not. Im too proud and have too much self-respect. But now, I want to set the record straight with this song and video.F1NN5TERPopular Twitch streamer F1NN5TER took a big step when he shared with fans that hes been taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and now identifies as genderfluid. In a YouTube video titled Coming Out, F1NN5TER shared that it felt a bit like Id uncovered a part of myself that Id been purposely shutting down for as long as I could remember, and never questioned why.I spent so many months scared and stressed out, trying to pick a label. Im still not done yet. I still havent figured absolutely everything out, but Im feeling comfortable enough to talk about it now, he said. For now, he decided that the label of genderfluid is what suits him best, and that he still prefers he/him pronouns. However, he acknowledges that might change, said that hes ultimately fine with any pronouns, and that what he tells people in real life about his gender identity is, I just dont care.He also shared that he identifies as bi. Now, he's living his most authentic self after coming out on February 24 in an interview with Pink News. I do, yeah. Im somebody that walks into a room and there are some people who walk into the room, you go, Well, theyre not gay, and They are gay. My own sexuality is sufficiently liberal to have encompassed many different experiences, which are not anyones business.Madame LaQueer View this post on Instagram A post shared by Madame LaQueer (@madamelaqueer) RuPaul's Drag Race season 4 star Madame LaQueer started 2024 by coming out as trans in her Instagram Story and embraced her true identity as her full identity as Madame Cassandra Uzumaki LaQueer. WWW.PRIDE.COMDoes Paul Mescal ditch his one-night stands in the park?Last December, rumors hit the internet that anytime Paul Mescal has a one-night stand, he'll take the woman on a walk to the park the next morning and then simply run away from her. The idea of it was so strange, and so specific, that TikTok could not get enough of it.@holdensmith962hes so unserious #paulmescal #london #normalpeople #normalpeopleedit #daisyedgarjones #paulmescaledit #fyp #popcultureAs it turns out, the actor himself found the whole thing pretty hilarious, too.He was asked about the rumors in a recent interview with GQ, and reportedly responded by "belly laughing and turning red."The viral rumors spread while Mescal was with his family for the holidays. He and his siblings, he said, "were looking at the videos and we were pissing ourselves at it." (@) But unfortunately, his poor mother was less amused."The one thing that upset me was that... I remember my mum looking at the videos and she was getting upset. Isn't that devastating?" the All of Us Strangers star recalled. "I was like, Oh, it's funny to usmy brother, me, my sisterbecause we know that this is the way the internet works. It's hilarious. If it was true, it'd be fucking bad, but as a rumor, it's funny.""Then I was like, Oh, if you're a mother, her impulse is to come out and be like, 'He wouldn't do this,'" he added.Hopefully Mescal and his siblings were able to convince their mom that everything was a-okay. And now the actor has at least gotten the opportunity to shut down the rumors himself."Categorically untrue," he said.Still, this one's good enough that it might just live on all the same. WWW.PRIDE.COMThis 'Drag Race' star isgetting absolutely ROASTED over endorsing Trump for PresidentIn a shocking turn of events, Santino Rice continues to be both incredibly wrong and unabashedly confident about his terrible opinions.Rice, who is best known for his work as a contestant on Project Runway season 5 and as a recurring judge on the first 6 seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race, has a lot of horrible takes that he loves to share with the world. He's outspoken on his anti-vaccination and anti-abortion stances. Since being fired from RPDR in 2015, Rice has slipped further out of cultural relevancy and into far-right Christian Nationalism. To say one nice thing about Rice: if it takes "courage to be disliked" then this man has some of the most courage I've ever seen. (@) He has truly become a parody of himself and the movement he is a part of. His X feed is a masterclass in ultraconservative nonsense posting. It's just all-caps screaming about the greatness of America and it's one and only savior, President Donald J. Trump, as far as you can scroll. For someone constantly spouting that through God all things are possible, Rice's behavior is less than Christlike to put it lightly. When Santino said "Calling Kamala Harris r*tarded is offensive to r*tards," I'm not sure which of Jesus's teachings that was supposed to embody, but Rice clearly knows something I don't!At least he took the time to clarify that his hatred of Vice President Kamala Harris isn't rooted in any sort of misogyny. Thank goodness! Riced posted this explanation to X on Sunday: (@) It's so great to hear that Rice would hypothetically vote for some woman some day. Glad we got that cleared up!Rice's statement obviously made a huge impact on others, what with its 39 likes and 27 reposts at the time of writing this article. I'm certainly glad that Rice found the courage to post something so brave and controversial- not because I agree with anything he's ever said, but because there's nothing like watching someone you hate get absolutely roasted on the internet! And to watch him get roasted by a bunch of drag queens? That's too good, it's not even my birthday!RuPaul's Drag Race UK winners The Vivienne and Lawrence Chaney both had words for Rice. (@) (@) There were also plenty of non-celebrities ready to put Rice in his place. (@) (@) (@) (@) (@) Rice has never had sound opinions, not on Drag Race and certainly not now. And those who take the time to let him know that he is a hateful, backwards bigot? They're really doing the Lord's work.0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews

Combs told the boy, who was trying to break into the music industry, that the assault was a rite of passage. The second alleged White Party incident involved a man working a last-minute security detail at the event. He says in 2006, he felt extremely ill after drinking a beverage laced with narcotics. Combs allegedly pushed him into van and raped him, the filing states.A promotional event in 2008 at Macys flagship store in Manhattan was the site of another attack, one lawsuit claims. Combs was there to promote his Sean John clothing line when the employee of a rival clothing brand says he was confronted in a stockroom and forced to perform oral sex on Combs as three armed bodyguards watched. The latest assault took place three years ago at another Combs party, his alleged victim, a music consultant, says in his suit. He claims that while he was incapacitated, he was taken to a backroom where he was raped by multiple men, including Combs. The team of lawyers representing the men includes Andrew van Arsdale of AVA Law Group, who argued for hundreds of victims in a sexual abuse lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America, now known as Scouting America.Van Arsdale and attorney Tony Buzbee of the Buzbee Law Firm announced earlier in October they would be filing over 100 lawsuits against Combs in New York, California, and Florida. They say the alleged victims ranged in age from 9 to 38 at the time of the assaults.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 35 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMKamala Harris FINALLY says the quiet part about Trump out loud and its SO SATISFYINGWhile Donald Trump was busy becoming more erratic by the day, Vice President Kamala Harris was finally saying what weve all been thinking about the MAGA leader that he is weak and unstable. On Sunday, at a Greenville, North Carolina rally, Harris called Trump out for refusing to release his medical records, turning down a 60 Minutes interview, and declining a second presidential debate.Of course, it makes sense why Trump would run scared from all these opportunities. Hes the oldest person to ever become a presidential nominee at 78 years old, the news anchors at 60 Minutes wouldnt lob him softball questions like FOX News doesnt, and Harris wiped the floor with him in their first debate. During her speech, Harris told the audience that Trump is not being transparent with the voters by hiding his health records. Axios even requested his medical records from the Trump campaign but was sent a nearly year-old letter from his doctor instead. Ive done it. Every other presidential candidate in the modern era has done it, Harris said. He is unwilling to do a 60 Minutes interview, like every other major party candidate has done for more than half a century. He is unwilling to meet for a second debate. (@) Then, she said the quiet part out loud, and it was glorious to watch! It makes you wonder why does his staff want him to hide away? she asked. One must question are they afraid that people will see that he is too weak and unstable to lead America? Is that whats going on?Harris, on the other hand, released her own medical records for the public to examine, willingly participated in a 60 Minutes interview last week, and has said shes up for more presidential debates. And this isn't the only time she's called out Trump out recently. On October 14, at a camping event in Eerie, Pennsylvania, Harris played a highlight reel of the Republican nominee, which she said illustrated that he is "unstable and unhinged, and he is out for unchecked power." (@) Whether Trumps forcing a town hall full of people to listen to more than 30 minutes of music while he sways on stage like hes lost in the sauce, claiming that Haitian immigrants are stealing and eating peoples pets in Ohio, or forgetting that hes not running against Barack Obama, Trumps disturbing antics are frequently written about but rarely called out by stating the naked truth that he is not only racist and sexist, but also far too incompetent to be trusted with the nuclear codes. But apparently, Harris is done beating around the bush and is now saying it like it is. We never knew how cathartic it would be to have another politician call out Trump without using euphemisms! So folks, for these reasons and so many more, it is time to turn the page, Harris ended to uproarious applause and cheers from the audience.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMA volleyball team balked at playing against trans woman. The university wasnt having it.Individual players with the University of Nevadas womens volleyball team will be allowed to opt out of their upcoming match against the San Jose State University womens volleyball team. Nevadas team had initially voted to forfeit the October 26 match due to San Jose State University allegedly having a transgender woman, making Nevadas university the fifth recent one to forfeit. However, the University of Nevada, citing the Nevada Constitution and state laws, said it will have its team compete as originally agreed. Related 3 universities forfeit volleyball tournament over alleged trans player Anti-trans state politicians and an impending lawsuit also pressured the team to pull out. In a statement explaining its decision, the University of Nevada wrote that a majority of the womens volleyball team voted on October 13 to forfeit the match. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The players decision and statement were made independently, and without consultation with the University or the athletic department, the statement said, adding that the players decision didnt represent the position of the university. The University and its athletic programs are governed by the Nevada Constitution and Nevada law, which strictly protect equality of rights under the law, and that equality of rights shall not be denied or abridged by this state or any of its subdivisions on account of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, ancestry or national origin, the statement continued. The University is also governed by federal law as well as the rules and regulations of the NCAA and the Mountain West Conference, which include providing competition in an inclusive and supportive environment. The University intends to move forward with the match as scheduled, and the players may choose not to participate in the match on the day of the contest, the statement concluded. No players will be subject to any team disciplinary action for their decision not to participate in the match. This statement comes after the University of Nevada womens volleyball team sent a statement to Outkick, a sports and political commentary website owned by Fox Corporation, stating their rationale for not competing against San Jose State University. We, the University of Nevada Reno womens volleyball team, forfeit against San Jose State University and stand united in solidarity with the volleyball teams of Southern Utah University, Boise State University, the University of Wyoming and Utah State University, the team told OutKick. We demand that our right to safety and fair competition on the court be upheld. We refuse to participate in any match that advances injustice against female athletes. The school released that statement without consulting our team at all, Senior Sia Liilii of Nevadas team told OutKick. We were pretty upset that we were not made aware that a statement was going to come out. We were actually in Las Vegas preparing for our match against [University of Nevada, Las Vegas], our in-state rival. It was a really frustrating time, especially because we were about to go and play a big game. We decided that were going to stand in solidarity with other teams that have already forfeited and that we wouldnt participate in a game that advances sex-based discrimination or injustice against female athletes, Liilii added.Schools that chose to forfeit against San Jose State for allegedly having a trans female player include Southern Utah University, Boise State University, Utah State University, and Wyoming University. The player in question has been playing for three seasons now without issues of her participation. She has been compliant with NCAA requirements for testosterone levels throughout this entire period, and has never violated the requirements. There is no evidence of discrimination against cisgender female athletes due to her participation. Todd Kress, coach of the San Jose State University team, said that his team has dealt with hate mail as a result of the publicity over the teammate. Some of it, to be honest, is disgusting, Kress said. Im more worried about our student-athletes and what they receive and how thats impacting their mental health, Kress told local media.Concentrating on what we can do on the court has, quite frankly, been very tough lately, Kress said. There have been outside forces who have sought to divide our team, our university, our conference and our sport. I know its been weighing on the players in our locker room who have put in years of hard work. We have an incredible group of young women who are trying to put the controversy aside. I just have faith that well eventually be able to put the outside noise aside and be able to play for each other and find love for one another again.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 36 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMMichelle Visage spills the tea on her open marriage and how compersion is the key to its longevityMichelle Visage opened up about her open relationship, and we are taking notes! The 55-year-old ballroom legend and RuPaul's Drag Race judge (and now host of Drag Race Down Under) spoke candidly with British writer and actress Cush Jumbo on her podcast Origins with Cush Jumbo about her love life, and what it means for her and her husband to be in an open relationship.Visage and her husband David Case, an author better known by his pseudonym Jax Spenser, and Visage have two children together and have been married since 1997. While there are many jokes made between Visage and the other Drag Race judges about her presumed promiscuity, Visage must be doing something right to be in a such a happy marriage for 27 years. So what's their secret?See on InstagramWell, it certainly doesn't hurt that they're both breathtakingly gorgeous. He works Drag Cons with me," said Visage, "and he comes to all these things with me, and listen- my husbands quite good looking. So the gay men have let it be known that hes quite good looking."Case also has a knack for celebrating Visage. She continued, saying about Case's feelings towards her many accomplishments, "So he beams with pride. Hes got that thing down. I think you call it compersion."Compersion, while sometimes described as the opposite of jealousy, is I think better explained as the opposite of schadenfreude. Instead of feeling happiness at other's pain or misfortune, you feel happiness at the joy others are experiencing- a sympathetic joy. Many in open relationships, even those who have been nonmonogamous a long time, still work through their own jealousy and envy and are still capable of feeling compersion at the same time. See on InstagramWhile not a requirement for an open relationship by any means, compersion makes things a lot easier. Visage herself even said it's not something she experiences to the extent that Case does, but they make it work through love, honesty, and communication. We live openly, so he would get off knowing that I was so happy, and no matter what it is that I do and Im not just talking sexually, whatever it is," Visage said. "I dont know if I have compersion in me to be really excited if hes doing something with another woman but I know that it exists, and he is 100% that.Cush responded, poignantly adding, "Its like giving you the opportunity to have the space to feel like you never have to hide any piece of yourself.Visage agreed, "And I dont and neither does he."See on InstagramVisage's full episode of Origins can be listened to wherever you get your podcasts.0 Comments 0 Shares 38 Views 0 Reviews
