WWW.UNCLOSETEDMEDIA.COMMontana Governor Signs Bathroom, Trans Athlete Restrictions into LawMaria Silvers, Montana Free Press.Gov. Greg Gianforte, right, pictured at a May 2023 bill signing ceremony. Photo credit: Mara Silvers / MTFPSubscribe nowRepublican Gov. Greg Gianforte on Thursday signed two bills restricting transgender Montanans access to public bathrooms and locker rooms and participation on athletic teams, sparking legal action from civil rights advocates against one of the new laws slated to go into effect immediately. The news came from the governors office via a press release in the early afternoon and an accompanying video posted to the social media platform X. There, Gianforte said the legislation would help safeguard fairness, privacy, and security in sports and public places.Over the last few years weve seen far-left gender ideology sweep the nation, Gianforte said. But here in Montana weve stood up against this radical agenda and maintained equal opportunity for all Americans while also protecting women and girls.House Bill 121, which affects public bathrooms, locker rooms and sleeping areas, in addition to those residing at domestic violence shelters, was written to take effect immediately upon being signed into law. House Bill 300, pertaining to student athletes in K-12 and university settings, is not slated to take effect until Oct. 1.An attorney for the ACLU of Montana said the organization filed a lawsuit Thursday afternoon against HB 121 on behalf of transgender and intersex plaintiffs. The same-day lawsuit was prompted by the laws immediate effective date, the attorney said. This is yet another attempt to demonize and marginalize transgender Montanans and we wont stand by idly, said Alex Rate, the organizations legal director. Both bills saw broad support from legislative Republican lawmakers, reflecting how the issue of strict gender roles has become a cornerstone of the state and national GOP in recent years.Gianfortes Thursday announcement was lauded by national groups including the Alliance Defending Freedom and Independent Womens Voice, which has advocated for similar gender bills in other states.Throughout committee hearings and debates, backers of both bills consistently sidestepped opponents allegations they intended to restrict the lives and expression of transgender people. Rather, supporters described cisgender women feeling uncomfortable or threatened when in close proximity to transgender people in vulnerable spaces, such as locker rooms and dormitories.Subscribe for LGBTQ-focused, accountability journalism. Supporters also described the hypothetical situation of predatory, cisgender men masquerading as women for the purpose of invading public spaces, an argument that Democratic lawmakers and transgender opponents panned as disingenuous and fearmongering. We have trans people in our communities. We have trans people who are employees, who are students. We have trans people who face abuse and come to the shelter, said Rep. Zooey Zephyr, D-Missoula, the first openly transgender woman to serve in the Montana Legislature, during a January debate over HB 121. This is not an issue is what was said again and again by the people impacted on the ground. The plaintiffs in the ACLU lawsuit include two state employees, a political intern for the Montana Democratic Party who works at the state Capitol building, and an accessibility coordinator at Helena College, a public university, all of whom are transgender or do not identify as either gender. Another plaintiff is intersex and, because of his biological characteristics, does not know whether HB 121 classifies him as male or female. The law creates a route for legal action against any public facility including jails, schools and government buildings or domestic violence shelter that do not take steps to ensure that multi-user bathrooms or locker rooms are sex-segregated based on chromosomes and reproductive biology. In court filings, attorneys for the ACLU of Montana said the law presents plaintiffs with impossible choices about how to navigate public spaces where they work, as well as public parks and libraries.Discomfort with or dislike of transgender people cloaked as a privacy or safety concern is not a legitimate basis for imposing unequal or stigmatizing treatment, attorneys wrote in the brief for a temporary restraining order.Rate added that the ACLU of Montana did not have an immediate plan to challenge HB 300, the prohibition on athletic participation, though he said the latter bill suffers from the same constitutional infirmities as the bathroom ban.Lawmakers from both parties this session questioned how HB 300 is legally distinct from prior bills that sought to restrict student sports participation. A bill from 2021 was struck down as it applied to colleges and universities after a judge found it infringed on the role of the Montana Board of Regents. Another bill that sought to institute strict definitions of sex across Montana law was found unconstitutional in February based on equal protection and privacy violations.Supporters pointed out that HB 300 amends a broader, preexisting section of law that prohibits discrimination in education. They also said the policy is in line with the federal governments stance on interpreting gender discrimination, an analysis that has flipped between the administrations of former Democratic President Joe Biden and current Republican President Donald Trump. The NCAA has also recently changed its protocols for transgender athlete participation, under pressure from the Trump administration, requiring participation to be based on sex assigned at birth. In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education told Montana Free Press that it is anticipating minimal issues with complying with both laws.A preliminary review of campus bathroom facilities shows that minimal effort will bring our campuses into compliance, said Galen Hollenbaugh, deputy commissioner for government relations and communications.Regarding HB 300, Hollenbaugh said, the Montana Board of Regents policy requires the Montana University System to comply with NCAA regulations.Following a presidential Executive Order, the NCAA has revised the relevant regulations regarding trans athletes, neutralizing any MUS compliance issues with HB 300, Hollenbaugh said.If objective, nonpartisan, rigorous, LGBTQ-focused journalism is important to you, please consider making a tax-deductible donation through our fiscal sponsor, Resource Impact, by clicking this button:Donate to Uncloseted Media0 Comments 0 Shares 118 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMComedian James Tom comes out with new name after experiencing Grindr and Fire IslandTrans comedian James Tom just announced his new name!In a new revealing personal essay for Them, Tom detailed the journey of self discovery he went through to get to a place where he felt comfortable announcing his name change and new pronouns to the world. The stand-up comic and actor best known as a writer for gay pirate series Our Flag Means Death and for roles on Life and Beth and the Ayo Edebiri and Rachel Sennott series Ayo and Rachel are Single has identified as some version of queer since he was a teenager, and spent years experiencing people being confused by his gender expression and what pronouns to use. But for every frustration I faced, my nonbinary identity also freed me from the burden of other peoples perceptions. It was okay that people called me 'sir' from behind and pivoted to 'miss' when I turned around, Tom wrote. It wasnt until 2022, after being on testosterone for three years and experiencing a breakup, that Tom realized he was attracted to men and started exploring that.Testosterone allowed me to access a latent desire for men that had likely always existed, but felt impossible to realize as a woman. As a boy, though, dick became ubiquitous, Tom revealed. There are cathedrals everywhere for those with eyes to see. I took to f****try like a fish in water, and with my new gay surroundings came new ways for people to perceive me, and more importantly, new ways for me to perceive myself.See on InstagramAt different points in his transition journey, Tom has identified as a butch dyke and then nonbinary, but it turns out identifying as a twink felt more authentic than any other identity he had landed on throughout his gender expression journey. To my surprise, I could see myself much more clearly as a beautiful twink than the butch-spectrum dyke I had tried to be for most of my life, he explained. No wonder I had always preferred Kylie Minogue to Tegan and Sara. But whereas my masculinity was taken at face value in dyke spaces, I knew I would have to really assert it around cis gay men.The comedian, who was part of of the all-genderqueer Netflix comedy special Hannah Gadsbys Gender Agenda, started using James as his name on Grindr and then took a life-altering trip to Fire Island the year the Fire Island movie came out where he partied and was truly accepted as a man for the first time.Magically, Fire Island, a film about feeling out of place on Fire Island, had given me an opportunity to feel included on Fire Island. James was invited to the party, he wrote. That life-changing trip happened three years ago, but now Tom is ready to come out with his name change and new pronouns to the whole world.Ive been out as various shades of gay since I was 13, but Im still learning how to come out, he explained. Perhaps due to my own avoidant tendencies, I have never liked the thought of rupturing peoples existing idea of me. And because Ive been openly queer for most of my life and all of my career, I have managed to circumvent a big coming out moment until now.See on InstagramTom has now had top surgery and has been on hormones, but publicly changing his name still felt incredibly audacious. For me, changing my body is about taking control of my vessel and being able to see myself. Changing my name is a demand that other people see what I see, he wrote.Toms journey to self discovery and self acceptance hasnt always been easy or seamless, but hes learned to accept that he may continue to change. One of the biggest lessons Ive learned through transition is that I cant always predict the ways I will change, I can only be open to changing.Hes also aware that after coming out in such a public way there may still be moments of awkwardness or times when people are confused, but Tom is ready to step through the portal and meet myself on the other side.I like the person I am, or the person Im becoming, and I think if Id done it differently, I would be someone else, he wrote. It was Jes Tom who nailed the audition so that, someday, in the near future, James Tom will see his name in the credits. I wouldnt have it any other way.0 Comments 0 Shares 123 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMBob the Drag Queen shades Mistress Isabelle Brooks weight loss: 'Girl, you have to get new pads'Walk into the turret purse first.Bob the Drag Queen gave reality TV fans so many memorable moments on the latest season of The Traitors. The star had no problem killing off iconic Real Housewives and sharing her opinions every second she competed in the Scotland castle."I don't know who they thought they were going up against. Bring them all on honey! I did not go as hard as I could. If you don't believe me, go watch Sibling Rivalry. I was being very kind to the Housewives," Bob tells PRIDE.Bravo fans definitely weren't fond of Bob's gameplay throughout the season, especially after he encouraged his fellow traitors to murder Dorinda Medley and Chanel Ayan."The Housewife fans... they're tweeting from an account Dorinda's wine glass or Nene Leakes' wig or Robyn's elbow. These Drag Race fans are tweeting from their actual work page! Drag Race fans are bold honey and Housewife fans are old. If I can survive the Drag Race fandom, I can survive anything." See on Instagram Love him or hate him, Bob made quite a splash on the third season and even teased a potential comeback if the offer were to come his way."I deserved more screen time! You know what? Maybe if there's a Traitors All Stars I'll come back. Maybe if I can go do The Amazing Race with Mont [X Change], I'll do that as well. I'll tell you one thing you will not find me on Survivor eating bugs."With The Traitors steadily gaining in popularity, it would be such a treat to see more RuPaul's Drag Race legends compete on the Emmy-winning show."Plane Jane, Mont X Change, TS Madison... get them on The Traitors. I don't know if NeNe Leakes said no, [but] NeNe Leakes and Tiffany Pollard need to be on The Traitors."For seasons two and three of Traitors, only one alum from RuPaul's Drag Race has been cast, so it would be refreshing to see a couple controversial queens cast on the next season."Plane Jane and Mistress Isabelle Brooks are the new troll queens. [Mistress] has been taking shots of Ozempic and semaglutide apparently. She was taking lots of shots, hasn't she? Congrats on your weight loss, but girl, you have to get new pads when you lose weight."Bob and Mistress have had a playful feud for quite some time now, so the reality star couldn't help but throw some shade at her notorious frenemy."What's not clicking? The proportionizing is all math, but she went to public school in Texas, so obviously she's not good at math. Why is Lana Ja'Rae wearing Latrice Royale's pads? It doesn't work mama." See on Instagram Although season three of The Traitors has come to an end, Bob is still grinding and making big moves in the entertainment industry. His latest passion project and debut novel Harriet Tubman: Live in Concert just dropped this week."It's a book about Harriet Tubman coming back to life and writing a hip-hop album. I have a strong love for Harriet Tubman and I love hip-hop! I got a chance to blend all these things together. If you get the audio book, it has two original songs on it! They're two songs made just for this project. I like to create the kind of art that I'd like to consume."Harriet Tubman: Live in Concert is available wherever books are sold. WWW.PRIDE.COMAdore Delano is outraged over her passport gender marker update denial & we all should be, tooTrans Drag Race icon Adore Delano is furious that she cant get a passport that accurately reflects her female gender amid the Trump administrations anti-trans policy to halt passport applications to Americans whose gender is different than their assigned sex at birth. In a TikTok video posted on Friday morning that is currently going viral, Delano told fans that her name is now legally Adore Delano, but the federal government isnt recognizing her updated gender. But its true you guys, theyre not changing my gender federally so my passport will remain male, Delano said in her TikTok video that has already amassed nearly a million views at the time of publication. Fking wild because I travel outside the country for a living. Im filming my first movie outside of the country this week. So all of my documentation that are federal will remain male, she said.@itsadoredelanolegally Adore Delano BUTTrans and nonbinary Americans are currently fighting back against President Trumps executive order that directed the State Department to only issue passports that "accurately reflect the holders sex, Reuters reports. It was only two months ago that Delano happily posted on Instagram about turning in paperwork to legally change her name and gender after coming out as trans in 2023 and being open about undergoing facial feminization surgery. GENDER & NAME PAPERWORK TURNED IN! now we wait, she wrote on Instagram.Delano said she tried everything she could think of to get a new passport with a female gender marker but was told that were like a month-and-a-half to two months too late and that the option to change your gender marker has already been removed from the Social Security website. Theyre really out here calling us men, girls!Delano isnt the only trans celebrity who has struggled with getting a passport with the correct gender marker. Euphoria actress Hunter Schafer also made a TikTok video to share her "harsh reality check" that her new passport had a male gender marker. No one, no matter their circumstance, no matter how wealthy or white or pretty or whatever, is excluded. This is real.Schafer expressed her anger at the Trump administrations new pocky but told fans that it doesnt change her transness."I don't give a f*ck that they put an 'M' on my passport. It doesn't change really anything about me or my transness, she explained. However, it does make life a little harder. I'm pretty sure it's gonna come along with having to out myself to border patrol agents and that whole gig much more often than I would like to or is really necessary."0 Comments 0 Shares 120 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMWatch: Pedro Pascal adorably flustered over NSFW joke about Mr. Fantastic's stretching abilitiesPedro Pascal unintentionally painted a mental image for fans that's going to be hard to forget during a recent conversation about his new film. The actor stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week to discuss the upcoming season of The Last of Us as well as his role in Marvels latest attempt at a Fantastic Four movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps.Kimmel waited until the end of the conversation to inch towards a NSFW question that had been on his mind."In the trailer, we dont see you stretch, which is Mr. Fantastics power," he said. "Do you know whats in the next trailer? Will we see the stretching ability?"When Pascal admitted he doesnt know whats in the next trailer, the TV host barreled on all the same."I was wondering if all ofMr. Fantastics body parts stretch," he said. "And I wondered if you know the answer to that question. And did you even ask that question? Because it was my first question."Clearly flustered, Pascal laughed and finally gave the only answer he could possibly give: "Everything has to stretch."Amusingly enough, Kimmel decided to drive the point home by pulling a panel from the comics that illustrated (not visually, of course) what he was not-so-subtly getting at. And it would certainly seem everyones on the same page about just how much stretching Mr. Fantastic can do and where. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is scheduled to hit theaters July 25, 2025. And now we will presumably be waiting for a release date on the relevant porn parody conceived by someone inspired by this interview.0 Comments 0 Shares 126 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMJD Vance ruthlessly mocked after everyone in Greenland refused to welcome wife Usha VanceVice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, landed in Greenland on Friday afternoon, but they had to rearrange their entire trip to avoid embarrassment after people in the country said they didnt want to welcome the couple. And now, of course, the internet is roasting Vance for being unpopular wherever he goes. In anticipation of the visit, American officials went door-to-door in Nuuk, Greenlands capital, in the hopes of finding residents who wanted to greet Usha Vance, but no one took them up on the offer, Danish TV reports per The Daily Beast. Instead, that part of the trip and an excursion to see a dog sled race were pared down to just a visit to the remote American missile defense station on the island. The controversial trip was part of President Trumps push to take Greenland from Denmark one way or the other. But things didnt go to plan as Greenlands government called the trip highly aggressive, people planned to protest outside of the airport, and the organizers of the sled race said they never invited the second lady to attend, The New York Times reports. The internet quickly started mocking Vance for bungling this PR stunt of a trip so badly. People quipped that Hating JD and Usha Vance has united the world, while someone else hoped they choke on fermented shark, and another person suggested that no one would want to put their furniture at risk around Vance, writing, Whod want to put their coach in danger like that?Keep scrolling to see the funniest reactions to the Vances being shunned by an entire nation! WWW.PRIDE.COMIn 'Survival of the Thickest,' queer joy and activism are one and the sameThis week, Survival of the Thickest returns for its sophomore season on Netflix, and the show, which already felt like a much-needed and joyful escape, is even more poignant now. For the unfamiliar, the series follows the exploits and experiences of Mavis Beaumont (as played by Michelle Buteau and based loosely on her book of essays), and her friends as they navigate both career challenges and (queer) romantic ones. Mavis has dreams of becoming both a famed stylist to the stars and of making the world by way of the fashion industry a more welcoming and accessible place for people with larger bodies (or, as she puts it, folks with oddy bodies and fatty baddies. Season two picks up with Mavis quickly finding herself single again but ready to pour herself into growing her brand, and creating more space and acceptance for everybody beginning with her own brick-and-mortar store.Sign up for the PRIDE.com Newsletter to get a candid take on whats fresh and fun in LGBTQ+ culture this week! Its aspirational to be sure, but much has changed in the real world since season one made its way to Netflix in July 2023. So while the show is as funny and charming as ever, Mavis quest to take on the system just hits a little different this time. And thats a very good thing. Its not lost on Buteau who is excited to use her platform to elevate the voices and stories of marginalized people and is unapologetically an ally to the queer community. Everybody is our brother and sister were all family. So can we just do that? she asks PRIDE.She has high hopes that LGBTQ+ people will feel uplifted by this season which sees multiple queer love stories unfold. Buteau says her desire is one that the queer audience knows. That they are worthy and important and that they matter and that they should have happy endings and a community to go through stuff with. For the actor, creator, and producer of the show, Buteau sees the show as, such a love letter to my friends and I always say the oddy bodies and fatty baddies in the queer community to be like we got this lets keep going. While I have this moment on this platform to do this show Im gonna do what I can to make us shine, bitch. While she is serious about her allyship, Buteau cant help but joke about the pleasures and pitfalls of bringing her love stories to the screen this season. Fresh off of a heartbreak, Mavis is ready to embrace her hoe side in season two, which sees her set out on a spree of dates: some that go well and some that go hilariously wrong. But theres a method to all the madness, says Buteau. I had a lot more intimate scenes than I had in season one. I think trying to figure out how to tell that story in the most beautiful way, but also honest way, so its like maybe less makeup because I think its very important to tell women that they dont need a beat face in order to be loved or dicked down, or however you enjoy your sex, she explains. Adding, But Im not gonna lie being on set having cooked meals for you all the time and then trying on a bunch of lingerie in between lunch, its just like, What is this gonna be? That was a little challenging, but it was also really fun. Its also an honor, but its also really hard not to fart on them sometimes. That quote perfectly encapsulates the ethos and balancing act that Survival embodies. Its activism and humor, sexiness, and humanity all rolled into one utterly watchable series. Fart jokes? You bet, but it also presents a world that suggests what our real one could be if we just led with love and acceptance. Its also why the inclusion of drag legend Peppermint, playing a version of herself, adds so much depth and hope to the proceedings. The drag superstar, broadway actress, and trans activist doesnt mince words when it comes to seeing how this show can serve as a powerful tool of empathy building in a time when we truly need it most.In the day and age where were hearing people who werent elected to be very close to certain high offices in the country, talking about how empathy is the enemy and the death of this country, which is not true, but that is what has been said because they know that empathy is the one thing that will defend people against this type of dehumanization, Peppermint tells PRIDE. You cannot dehumanize who you empathize with, and that is key.She continues. We need each other, and I can impact you, and you can impact me. Its inevitable, if were sharing space, we will impact each other and improve on each others lives, she tells PRIDE. Thats one of the things that Michelle and the writers do so well [in season two.] Like the best of entertainment, Survival of the Thickest manages to do both things, entertain first and foremost, but it also invites us to open up our hearts to characters, some of whom are like us, some of us whose lived experiences are totally unlike ours and to love them both. Thats not just a recipe for queer joy, its one for survival. Survival of the Thickest season two is streaming now on Netflix. Watch the trailer below. \0 Comments 0 Shares 134 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.UNCLOSETEDMEDIA.COMHow Far-Right Manfluencers Are Grooming Lost BoysPhoto by Rebecca Lai, Modern-Day Debate, Anything Goes With James English. Design by Sam Donndelinger.Subscribe nowOn Nov. 5, 2024, shortly after Donald Trump won the election, Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist Holocaust denier, posted to X, Your body, my choice. Forever.Over 100 million people saw the post. It was part of a surge of sexist and abusive hate and harassment toward women, LGBTQ people and other minorities that came after Trumps reelection. In a similar post the next day, far-right influencer Andrew Tate responded to a user who asked for a president that is not a rapist. REQUEST DENIED, responded Tate. In another response to a left-wing influencer who posted that American decency was destroyed tonight, Tate responded by writing, Crying faggot alert.Tate, an influencer with more than 10 million followers on X, has compared women to dogs, believes it should be illegal for them to drive and thinks they should bear some responsibility for being raped. He himself is currently under criminal investigation over a string of allegations, including human trafficking and sex with a minor.Tate and Fuentes may seem like extreme examples, but theyre far from alone when it comes to far-right male influencers, or manfluencers, who find internet fame by hating on minority groups.Adin Ross, who has 2.6 million followers on X, went on a homophobic rant on the streaming service Kick: Youre wearing a pink beanie. Youre a grown man. Kill yourself. Kill yourself, fag. Please die. Nobody will care. Please do the world a favor, he said, at a time when 41% of LGBTQ kids in the U.S. considered suicide. Matt Walsh, who boasts 3.6 million followers on X, has profited from bullying trans kids, writing a childrens book that compares being trans to being a walrus. And Joe Rogan, who has the third most popular podcast on Spotify, has said trans people will cause societal collapse and has used vile language to describe trans people using the bathroom: You cant just put lipstick on and now you can shit in the womens room!Photo by Steven Crowder, B.Lou and Anything Goes With James English. While narratives about LGBTQ people grooming and indoctrinating kids are pervasive in far-right spaces, there is increasing evidence that suggests so-called far-right manfluencers are pushing the next generation of men to more extreme positions that many experts warn are contributing to a rise in domestic abuse, physical violence and even terrorism. These online spaces that are much, much more accessible, particularly to young boys, they're sort of grooming kids. Right? says Gretchen Baldwin, a senior researcher at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. Maybe they're not directly sending these kids to the more extreme dark corners of the Internet, but they're preparing them. They're laying the groundwork for kids to then go toward these more extreme movements. But whats making far-right manfluencers so successful in 2025? And what tactics are they using to lure in young men and boys and keep them watching?Subscribe for LGBTQ-focused, accountability journalism. Loneliness and DespairOne reason far-right manfluencers are seeing such success today is because they are capitalizing off of a loneliness epidemic. According to a 2021 study by the Survey Center on American Life, the percentage of men who report having no close friends has risen fivefold since 1990, with 15% of men reporting having no close friendships. In addition, the male suicide rate was four times higher than that of females in 2022.Weve lost a lot of third spaces, says Baldwin, referring to spaces outside the home and work that we can socialize in, such as coffee shops, malls and bowling alleys. So now the Internet in many ways [has become] that third space.Baldwin says these far-right manfluencers offer an online place that feels traditionally masculine where boys can connect with other guys. Some aspects of these communities are innocuous: Tate provides his followers with workout routines and motivational speeches. He also offers a program called The Real World, that aims to teach young menfor $49.99 a monthabout cryptocurrency and e-commerce, with a focus on Tate's "41 Tenets for men."Screenshot via CobratateBut much of these influencer's rhetoric is rooted in ideals of Christian nationalism, white nationalism and misogyny. In 2021, Fuentes created his own streaming platform, Cozy.tv, with far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Since then, Fuentes has called for holy wars against Jewish people; professed his love for Hitler; encouraged a Catholic Taliban-style government in the U.S.; labeled homosexuality disgusting; and has said women shouldnt be allowed to vote. One of their tools is emphasizing that [young men] are being left out. You're being left behind. You're being pushed out of the center by women, gay people, immigrants, Black people, Brown people, is what they tell them, says Baldwin. They feel kicked while they're down, she says.Men are indeed struggling, with millions of them having dropped out of the workforce and women continuing to outpace them in college enrollment and graduation. These manfluencers recognize this struggle and blame minorities for their hardships. In doing this, they reaffirm a traditional male privilege. If things arent working out for you, then packaging that entitlement and the grievances that come from it and harnessing it against women and against LGBTQ people allows them to take advantage of things that men and boys in our society have been socialized into thinking that they're entitled to, says Rachael Fugardi, senior program manager of partnerships at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).Share Uncloseted MediaActivating Hate That Already ExistsAnother reason far-right manfluencers see such success is because many Americans approve of this extreme rhetoric. A 2023 study found that 56% of fathers aged 35 and younger and 23% of teen boys had a favorable view of Andrew Tate. Additionally, Tates brand of hate has spread to impressionable young boys in classrooms across the U.S. and the United Kingdom. And teachers around the world have shared on social media that theyve seen an uptick in male students repeating sexist vitriol in class to get a rise from their classmates and teachers. In 2023, Tate had become such a problem that the UK government asked teachers not to discuss him in class. Despite this, a primary school had to call in a charity to talk to students after four 9-year-old boyssome of whom said they had no problem with Tates viewslocked a girl in a cupboard, threatened to fuck her in the throat and then made her watch porn video clips. One teacher said that during the harassment workshop, one student frequently referenced Tate, saying: You shouldnt take no for an answer [from a girl] as that shows weakness. In America today, Fugardi says the political climate is only making things worse. We're seeing rhetoric that is hard to imagine showing up in classrooms after Trump was elected, she says, noting that men under 30 were one of the groups that swung sharply toward Trump in the 2024 election, with more than half of them voting for him.Trump himself engages with these manfluencers and made it integral to his campaign. And his actions have echoed the ideology of many popular manfluencers. He has dined with Fuentes at Mara-Lago, has been accused by at least 26 women of sexual misconduct and rape, has been found liable in court for sexual abuse and has said he will protect women whether they like it or not.I think these influencers become a lot more normalized when it is endorsed in the highest levels of American government, says Lydia Bates, a program manager at SPLC who works alongside Fugardi.Subscribe for LGBTQ -focused journalism.A Helping Hand from Big Techs AlgorithmIn addition to feeling emboldened by the current political climate, far-right manfluencers bad behavior is rewarded by algorithms created by big tech companies. The things that Andrew Tate is saying [are] not new. What's new is the platform that he has [and] his ability to manipulate algorithms and poorly enforced social media policies that gets into all of our homes, says Fugardi.A 2024 study by the University of Kent found that after only 5 days on TikTok, users were subjected to a fourfold increase in the level of misogynistic content being presented on the platform's For You page. And a 2024 study from Dublin City Universitys Anti-Bullying Centre found that YouTubes recommended video feature was also responsible for quickly pushing manosphere, or alpha male and anti-feminist, content to accounts. All of the male-identified accounts were fed masculinist, anti-feminist and other extremist content, irrespective of whether they sought [it] out. They all received this content within the first 23 minutes, the study found.Once the user showed interest, the amount of content rapidly increased. By the last round of the studys experiment, 78% of the YouTube videos and 76% of the TikTok videos being recommended were toxic, primarily falling into the manosphere category. The authors of the study described the content as rail[ing] against equality and promot[ing] the submission of women. Much of this was anti-transgender content.YouTube did not respond to a request for comment. In an email statement, TikTok told Uncloseted Media that misogyny has long been prohibited on their platform. They referenced their Community Guidelines that call misogyny a hateful ideology. Not Just A Joke: Irony PoisoningAs young men are fed this content, a key tool used by far-right manfluencers is irony poisoning. [Tapping into humor] helps normalize that way of talking and behaving, says Lucas Gottzn, a professor of child and youth studies at Stockholm University, whose research focuses on mens studies and violence. They hide behind trolling and minimizing the hate by saying, I didnt mean it, its just for fun.One viral example of irony poisoning is when Fuentes did a Rumble livestream in 2024. He told his 234,000 viewers that hes part of Trumps paramilitary wing and if Donald Trump called me up and said, Look, we need to capture my political enemies and torture them I would be like, sir, yes. After he was done with his monologue, he told his viewers, I'm kidding, kidding, kidding, kidding. Dude, listen, we're just having fun with it, OK? It's all jokes. Don't worry. I'm just kidding. OK?Bates and her team at the SPLC dont think its funny. In a 2024 report they wrote titled Not Just a Joke: Understanding & Preventing Gender- & Sexuality-Based Bigotry, the SPLC team connected irony poisoning to more extremist behavior.Edgy humor, the not just a joke thing, is a massive segue into male supremacist content. They're also preying on young men and boys' insecurities in terms of their physical appearances, their romantic relationships, their finances, Bates told Uncloseted Media.Connections to Violence Against Women And TerrorismOne 2023 study by Womens Aid found that children and young people exposed to misogynistic content were more likely to think there should be a more dominant person in a relationship and also viewed hurting someone physically as more acceptable. In addition, the Department of Homeland Security says, The threat of violence from violent extremists radicalized in the United States is high.According to the Global Terrorism Index published on March 5, Western countries in 2024 saw their first major rise in terrorist incidents since 2017, with lone-wolf attacks accounting for 93% of fatalities over the past five years. In the UK, minors accounted for 42% of terror arrests last year, reflecting a broader Western trend where youths account for one in five terror suspects.Subscribe for LGBTQ journalism. On top of all of this, the percentage of hate crimes against all minorities continues to rise year after year.We have proof that a number of mass casualty events, gun violence events in the U.S. were carried out by men who have frequented far-right chat rooms, says Baldwin. And even for the many folks who dont take it to the extreme of terrorism, there are some alarming implications to this rhetoric. Research shows that young boys who are consuming misogynistic content online are more likely to respond to surveys saying that violence [in a relationship] can be okay if you say sorry afterward. So there's a direct link between this kind of rhetoric and real-world violence, says Fugardi, adding that one in three women have experienced physical or sexual violence, often by an intimate partner. What Can Be Done?Gottzn says calling out hateful behavior doesnt go far enough and that we have a responsibility to understand the issues young men and boys face in today's world to combat this crisis. It's very easy to say, Yeah, this [is] misogynistic. But you have to actually try to counteract that, he says. I think that it's good to criticize men, and these influencers, but you also need to understand and listen to the issues of the young heterosexual men who follow them and get into that loop.We really need men in young people's lives to engage in these spaces. And it doesn't just have to be dads. It can be male coaches. It can be any man in a young person's life, says Baldwin. If parents are concerned their boys could be experiencing online radicalization, Baldwin points to resources like Equimundo, which provides resources that give more information on the manosphere. If a child requires deradicalization, she recommends programs like Life After Hate.Fugardi and Bates agree that focusing on the struggles men face is critical. We do need to be addressing loneliness and mental health and all these things, but we need to address that for its own good. And we need to [independently] address misogyny and perceptions of entitlement and sexual aggression, dominance and supremacism.Tate and Fuentes did not respond to Uncloseted Medias request for comment. If objective, nonpartisan, rigorous, LGBTQ-focused journalism is important to you, please consider making a tax-deductible donation through our fiscal sponsor, Resource Impact, by clicking this button:Donate to Uncloseted Media0 Comments 0 Shares 139 Views 0 Reviews

I am a ballroom house mother, a sister, a daughter, and a friend that anybody would want to have. In this self-introduction, Midori gave me a glimpse into her world. She may wear many hats (and crowns), but she dons them all with the grace of a seasoned professional and the heart of a nurturing caregiver.Recounting the moment on the Miss International Queen USA stage, she laughed about a piece of advice given backstage right before her name was announced: Dont let your emotional meltdown make for an unflattering photo. When her name was finally echoed through the venue, the myriad emotions threatened to sweep her off her feet.So many things, so many things, she said with a smile, recalling the moment she realized shed won. Mentally, I was like, Is this real? but also like, Okay, dont get too caught off guard. We want to make sure we take a good photo! View this post on Instagram A post shared by TuckItUp (@tuckituppp)The result shows her exuding absolute regal joy with no running mascara. More than anything, she felt victorious and proud. Not only had she earned the right to represent on an international stage, but she joined a small but powerful sisterhood: I am a part of the legacy of being the third Black winner ever since the franchise has been here, she shared. Im really honored to be a part of this experience and to shine my unique story. Her journey to the top was no small feat. She recalls competing in Miss Washington USA, a cis pageant, and placing in the top six. The moment was bittersweet; she believes her self-doubt undermined her final performance. I told myself that as a trans woman, I dont belong hereI felt as if I let myself down, she admitted.Yet, as luck (or fate) would have it, an opportunity to compete in Miss International Queen landed in her lap. Although initially hesitant, a recruiter convinced her to accept. Initially reluctant to take a chance, she decided to dive right in. In just two months, she compiled a pageant package of clothes and routines, many of which she designed herself, and threw herself headlong into the competition. And as the world knows, it paid off in the best possible way. But life for Mont isnt all stage lights and celebratory confetti. She recounted a recent trip to Houston and the unease she felt, being trans in Trump's America, on going into public bathrooms. But shes determined trans folks remain resolute in the face of adversity. We need to be visible, she stated plainly. We need to stand up and use our voices to show everyone that we are thriving.Part of that effort means leaning into the community. Hate might be loud, but Midori believes trans folks, especially trans women of color, can be louder when standing together. We are human beings, she underscored. We have hearts and emotions and feelings just like everyone else. The next significant milestone in her pageant journey is competing in Thailand for the Miss International Queen crown. She can hardly contain her excitement at the thought. Ill be competing against the best of the best [from] every nation, she said. And my goal is to not only go there and enjoy myselfbut to also showcase what USA has. Shes ready for the challenge, from the pageant in Thailand to the politics in the United States. This isnt just about winning a trophy and a title but honoring trans history and solidarity, proving diversity is Americas not-so-secret weapon.I asked Midori what message she wanted to share on todays Trans Day of Visibility. Her piece of advice felt both timely and timeless. I would love all of the younger generations to know that you can do anything, she reflects. It doesnt matter what other people are telling youIf you believe what you believe, then stand in that. Stand in your truth. And dont allow the opinions of the outside world dictate what your future is.For Midori Mont, the crown isnt just an accessory. Its a promise she makes to herself and her community. Its a promise to show up, speak up, and spark change wherever she goes. And if anyone is living proof of that, its this unstoppable queen. If Midori has taught us anything, its that in the grand production of life, every last one of us deserves to be seen. And if we let ourselves, we might discover that the stage has been waiting for us all along.0 Comments 0 Shares 158 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMAsk Auntie: Reflecting on my trans journey toward visibilityA Transformative Valentine's DayI'll never forget the first time I saw her reflected in the mirror. It was Valentine's Day, 2002. I decided to go to the mall after school because I had no Valentine to celebrate the day with. It had been over a year since I had stealthily packed clothes in my bookbag, changed before going to home class, and changed out before getting on the bus. I switched schools as a freshman and was beyond relieved: this high school felt more like a college, where we picked our courses, left campus for lunch, and had Thursday mornings off to go volunteerthough, somehow, I was able to pull it off and spend time with my girlfriends at the mall. (There was an amusing time we pulled off getting into an all-boys school for "research." A tale for another time!)I continued my social transitioning, albeit discreetly, as a sophomore in high school. I would wear headwraps instead of wigs and never dared to wear makeup, due more to my lack of makeup skills than getting caught. Sadly, my mother refused to understand; she felt my life would go on the same trajectory as my trans aunt, Kiki. The obstacles many Black trans women faced then are no different from now: lack of accessibility to equitable housing, employment, medicine, and more. Though we argued at one point during my first year in high school, part of the impetus that drove me to a different school, there was fortitude in me that never wavered. After a bit of retail therapy, I stopped by a small salon. I don't remember what led me to go in, but I remember the stylist. She was a bit older (maybe early 20s?) and resembled Gwen Stefani la "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" era. I asked her if she could wax my brows. At the time, I had those bushy, Princess Amelia-like pre-transformation brows, and the stylist knew how to trim and shape my brows perfectly. (She may have laid the foundation for their shape today!) Then we talked about makeup. I admitted to her I never wore makeup. She doted on me like a big sister and made recommendations from MAC. I eagerly bustled to the nearby MAC counter at Macy's with her notes and, fifteen minutes later, was back in the salon seat as she painted my face.I sometimes wonder what enthused her about doing my makeup. Perhaps it was because she had nothing else to do, as the mall was relatively empty that evening. Maybe she was honing her skills as an aspiring makeup artist. I like to believe she had friends like me, who also discovered their true selves, with a fabulous cis-ally walking alongside us in our journeys. When she was done, she turned me around in the salon chair to see the results. For the first time, I saw my true self in the mirror and felt visible. The Shadow of Fear and TraumaI want to say the rest of the night felt as glamorous as I was after the stylist did my makeup. Sadly, it was not. The night ended with yelling, screaming, shattered glass from a broken mirror, cuts on my hands and arms, and running next door barefoot to call the police. It was a traumatic experience that left physical scars for a few weeks and emotional wounds that lasted for years.I honestly don't know how I was able to cope with pushing my trans self back into the proverbial closet. Meditation? Prayer? McDonald's? I was one of those D.A.R.E. kids who took it seriously, so I didn't start drinking until the ripe age of 21. But I learned to adapt in some ways, though the true me yearned to breathe free.Fifteen years later, I would see her in the mirror again. A Journey to AuthenticityI had a public "coming out" party in early June 2017. My close family and friends knew that I was transitioning over a year prior, not long before I began my medical transition in early 2016. The greatest euphoria wasn't just feeling the physical changes in me over the coming yearsthat "tingly" sensation in the breasts, or the way my body hair thinned out (if only it did it for my waist!)but the joy in seeing the greatest adversaries in the earlier part of my trans teen's journey now become my greatest allies. There have been times I've cried tears of joy in seeing these changes, not just the familial and physical but also the growing acceptance in the greater community. But I have also shed tears of sorrow. Tears for my younger self, who cried themself to sleep after a harrowing night on Valentine's Day many years earlier, forced to wipe away their identity like day-old makeup and throw away their clothes. Who was forced to acknowledge their truth as a "phase." Who once thought of giving up on life but found an inner light to lead them through the dark underpass.Looking in the mirror, I don't see a timid reflection forced to hide because of fear. I now see the embodied testament of my resilience. When I see the adult trans woman in the mirror, it reflects and honors the younger me who once doubted her right to exist freely. The Significance of Trans Day of VisibilityOn Trans Day of Visibility, we uplift trans voices that are increasingly met with shouts of hate, fear, and violence. For me, Trans Day of Visibility is more than just a date on the calendar. It is a solemn promise to live boldly in my truth and help others do the same. Each time I speak my truth, I pay tribute to those who fight so we can stand taller and prouder of our identities. Each time I offer a hand or words of encouragement to another trans soul, I spark a light that casts away the shadows of despair.I choose to be seen, whole, and unafraid, writing new chapters in my story that speak of unknown possibilities. Now more than ever, I choose never to let fear limit my potential, never to let fear take the helm of my life, and never to let the fear of living in my truth hold me from destiny.Trans Day of Visibility reminds us that although the journey is long and, at times, challenging, it is also filled with love, hope, and hard-won joy.Whether you're looking at your true self in the mirror for the first time or many, I hope the person looking back at you reflects a journey worth taking. WWW.PRIDE.COMLove Wins! Two queer couples get engaged during Minnesota Frost's Pride gameThings were far from chilly during a recent hockey game in Minnesota where two separate engagements took place both celebrating queer love. The Minnesota Frost played one of their Pride Unity Games on Sunday, March 30, and the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Facing off against the Toronto Sceptres, the home team scored with a 5-2 win, breaking out of the losing streak that had plagued them for the prior three matches. While that in and of itself would have given attendees plenty to cheer about, there were other reasons to celebrate."We felt the love yesterday at Xcel with not one, but TWO proposals!" reads a post from the teams official Instagram. "Congratulations to the happy couples!"See on InstagramJumbotrons at sporting events have a long history of turning the spotlight on couples, whether for kissing or for these (hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime moments. They have an equally long history of heteronormativity, and sometimes outright homophobia, so scrolling to the last slide in the carousel and seeing a queer couples engagement broadcast to the crowd like that feels pretty special. And thats something that was clearly felt by spectators, both online and in person."This was SO cool to see in person!" wrote @cammie12357. "Big props to the Frost for being a part of these couples big moments.""We were sitting next to the second couple. They were just darling, and so, so happy!" @donnit14 chimed in."ON PRIDE NIGHT," @katiejohnson_mpls added. "im crying! So sweet!"Proposing in such a public way is definitely a major swing to take, but in the current political climate, its as important as ever for LGBTQ+ people to live loud and proud. And considering how happy these couples look, it was a power play that paid off.0 Comments 0 Shares 152 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMVivian Wilson says everything about her fathers, Elon Musk, is a scamThese days, Elon Musk has a whole line of people ready to crucify him for anything and everything, but perhaps no critic is as vocal as his transgender daughter, Vivian Wilson.Maybe he should rethink making Nazi salutes and hiring children to dig into peoples Social Security Numbers and private lives, but he isnt likely to slow it down anytime soon, even with people dropping their Teslas. After saying she wanted to utilize the platform Twitch in a recent interview with Teen Vogue, Wilson quickly doubled down on her critiques of the worlds richest man and took all of that fire to the platform.See on InstagramAppearing on left-wing political commentator Hasan Pikers YouTube livestream, the 20-year-old transgender activist wasted no time sharpening her claws. He was not a liberal darling, Wilson said, pushing back on narratives that Musks descent into far-right ideology is some kind of new development. I f**king know him. He was never on the left. It was a marketing scheme. She didnt stop there. While Musk is often touted as a brilliant innovator behind Tesla and SpaceX, Wilson was quick to pop that bubble. He doesnt engineer anything, she said. It turns out if you lie, and people believe it, people will think youre smart or God. I f**king hate that.Even Tesla, isnt safe. Its not a car company. Its a Ponzi scheme, she said, citing the companys inflated P/E ratio. As for his plans to colonize Mars? Its not happening, people Its a marketing scheme that everyone somehow fell for despite being debunked by a f**king Google search.See on InstagramThis is the first time shes made a claim like this, and its unclear if thats actually true, though the profitability of colonizing Mars has previously been discussed.Still, Wilsons takedowns are nothing if not unfiltered. He was just yelling at employees in the car while [my siblings and I all] watched, horrified, she said of Musks parenting style.Last year, Musk and SpaceX were sued by eight former employees under allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation.Critically, Wilson made it clearagainthat her identity is not the cause of Musks radicalization. People think that we live in a novel and that [my transition] is some tragic character motivation. This is not a novel. I am not the reason, she said. I cannot take credit for that, unfortunately. If Musk hoped to silence his daughter, its safe to say the plan backfired. WWW.PRIDE.COMEthel Cain & Pedro Pascal throw support behind Rachel Zegler amidst 'Snow White' dramaEthel Cain and Pedro Pascal are the latest celebs to throw their support behind Rachel Zegler amidst her continued scapegoating for the underperformance of Disneys live action version of Snow White.Zegler has been drawing backlash for Snow White ever since her casting was first announced back in 2021. At the time, the complaints largely revolved around racism with "skin as white as snow," the character should be played by a Caucasian person, her detractors insisted.Since then, people have come up with new reasons to be angry about her involvement in the film. She had the audacity to point out that theres some creepy stuff going on with the romance in the original that does not play well in a modern world. And drawing even more performative outrage, she said "free Palestine" on X (fka Twitter) last summer and later spoke out against people who voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 election. Her Palestine comment reportedly prompted an in-person scolding from producer Marc Platt (Ben Platts father) in addition to a continual pile-on from strangers online. Now that Snow White is underperforming at the box office and the folks who love pointing fingers scramble for something to blame beyond "everyone is tired of these boring remakes," Zegler is shouldering a lot of the flack. Never mind that shes got a devoted fan base, or that Gal Gadot has become a flop magnet, or that pesky racism we mentioned earlier, or any of the other myriad of reasons the film has yet to make back its unnecessarily bloated budget. Its easier to blame Zegler.Fortunately, fellow actors have been showing support for the young star amidst this foolishness, both publicly and privately.Zegler previously shared that former Shazam! Fury of the Gods costars Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu have been in her corner, as has Jameela Jamil, who is certainly no stranger to public controversy herself. She even said that Ariana Grande reached out to her out of nowhere at some point to offer support.Melissa Barrera, who similarly received flack over her support of Palestine, reposted something on Instagram last week that denounced the way Variety was allegedly attempting to "paint [Zegler] as difficult and politically radical."More recently, Cain chimed in, sharing an Instagram story that simply reads, "@rachelzegler dont let em get u down, legend." (@) "ethel cain is always on the right side of history and im obsessed," one fan replied.Pascal made a similar choice, opting to share a photo of Zegler and writing "#icon" underneath it. (@) Right-leaning tabloids like The Daily Mail have already bent over backwards highlighting the backlash Pascal has received for taking a small (but meaningful) stand for Zegler. But considering his legion of fans and the number of people who are cheering on his public support, it seems safe to say he wont be too bothered. (@)0 Comments 0 Shares 154 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMWhite Lotus' Mike Whites dad ghostwrote for the religious right, then turned against itFor all its biting satire, chaotic sex, and dead bodies, HBOs The White Lotus has always felt, somehow, like a love letter to queer viewers. Maybe its the gay characters, maybe its the men in speedos or maybe its creator Mike Whites ... dad?In a recent episode of The Dishcast with Andrew Sullivan, White revealed a personal chapter that could rival any plot twist from his Emmy-winning series: his father, James Melville Mel White, was once a ghostwriter for the religious right, penning books like Pat Robertsons Americas Dates With Destiny and Billy Grahams Approaching Hoofbeats: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse while secretly battling his identity as a closeted gay man. "He wanted to be the next Billy Graham, Mike says. For decades, Mel was a respected pastor, professor, and Christian filmmaker. He wrote bestsellers for televangelist giants like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and Billy Graham all while enduring exorcisms, conversion therapy, and even electric shock treatments in a desperate attempt to pray the gay away. It was probably the worst time in my life, Mike said, recalling the moment he realized his father was struggling with his sexuality. It was not on his agenda to be gay. It was a very long, drawn-out process.Behind the scenes, Mel was unraveling. But in public, he was flying private and pulling six-figure book deals $125,000 for five months of ghostwriting, to be exact. It was lucrative and he couldnt have been an out, gay man and remained associated with these people, Mike said. So he stayed closeted until my sister and I got through college.Once his kids graduated, Mel left the church and never looked back. He came out, fell in love with his husband, Gary Nixon, and pivoted to queer activism with the same passion he once used to sell Gods word on TV. In 1998, the couple co-founded Soulforce, a group rooted in nonviolent resistance to confront religious-based LGBTQ+ oppression. The two also went on to compete together as a father/son duo on both The Amazing Race 14 and The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business.See on InstagramMy dad would go around the country to religious colleges with gay students and have them bear witness to the harm that was being caused, Mike said. His gay activism was specifically targeted toward trying to convince the religious right and those that he had worked for prior. Its a legacy not lost on Mike. At the 2022 Emmys, he thanked Mel during his acceptance speech, calling him out as struggling, but clearly with deep love. And when you look closely at The White Lotus its tenderness, its queerness, its tragic comedy you start to see the story of a father and son who both learned, in very different ways, that living your truth might just be the most radical act of all.0 Comments 0 Shares 156 Views 0 Reviews
