Transphobic bully Riley Gaines doesn't deserve an apology from Simone Biles
Over the last few days, those involved in the debate over trans participation in sports have experienced a lot of whiplash.Former swimmer, famous internet bully, and sore loser Riley Gaines (who tied for fifth with trans athlete Lia Thomas in one college race and wasn't given the fifth place medal at the ceremony) once again used her online platform to harass a teen girl on June 6.Gaines shared a picture on X of the Minnesota Class AAAA Softball State Champions for 2025, which includes one trans girl, and captioned, "To be expected when your star player is a boy." (@) In response, Simone Biles, an international sports superstar and the most decorated gymnast of all time, called Gaines "truly sick" and a "straight-up sore loser.""You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!!" Biles wrote. "But instead You bully them One thing's for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!" (@) Gaines fired back, saying her "take is the least controversial take on the planet" and claiming that Biles was "being a male-apologist at the expense of young girls' dreams.""This is actually so disappointing," she wrote. "It's not my job or the job of any woman to figure out how to include men in our spaces."I wholeheartedly agree. As a woman and a lesbian, I love spaces that are exclusively for women. Unfortunately for Gaines, there are no men involved in the argument around trans girls competing in sports.Fortunately for Gaines, she has a rabid group of social media-obsessed followers who were quick to pounce on Biles. These people have nothing better to do than harass a young Black woman who is standing up for literal children. (@) Eventually, Biles was pressured into apologizing for getting "personal with Riley" and said that "these are sensitive, complicated issues that I truly dont have the answers or solutions to, but I believe it starts with empathy and respect. I was not advocating for policies that compromise fairness in womens sports. My objection is to be singling out children for public scrutiny in ways that feel personal and harmful. Individual athletesespecially kidsshould never be the focus of criticism of a flawed system they have no control over. I believe sports organizations have a responsibility to come up with rules supporting inclusion while maintaining fair competition. We all want a future for sport that is fair, inclusive, and respectful."Unsurprisingly, people on the political right are calling Biles "angry," a "bully," and saying she has "fallen from grace." This is typical rhetoric brought up whenever a Black woman speaks out about something or is passionate. In reality, the only bully here is Riley Gaines. (@) In her arguments against Biles, Gaines brought up convicted sexual predator Larry Nassar, a cis man. "All the horrific sexual abuse @Simone_Biles witnessed and spoke out against caused by one man, yet believes women should be forced to strip naked in front of men to validate the man's feelings," Gaines wrote. "You know how many gold medals you'd have if your 'inclusive' dream came true? Zero."In 2021, Biles and several other decorated gymnasts bravely testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about the sexual abuse that they, and hundreds of other women and girls, faced at the hands of Nassar, who was a doctor for USA Gymnastics. Biles is unfortunate enough to know the harsh reality of what abuse from men feels like, and she knows it is not comparable to letting teen trans girls compete in girls' sports.Trying to use Nassar's sexual abuse of Biles against her wasn't the only low blow Gaines attempted. Gaines also called out Biles for "body shaming her" in a tweet where Biles told her to "bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male." She replied by saying she's 5'5".If Biles were forced to compete against Gaines in a swimming race, the 5'5" Gaines would have a genetic advantage over the 4'8" Biles. Gaines has more human growth hormone in her body, a drug banned by most sports organizations. By her own rules, does this make Gaines a man?It is also hilariously ironic that Gaines is trying to call out Biles for "body shaming" her when Gaines has made a career out of body-shaming women. She says that Biles' comments come "at the expense of young girls' dreams," but what about young trans girls, young intersex girls, and young girls with hormone imbalances?I know Gaines would say they aren't "real" girls, but she doesn't get to decide. She's not an expert in biology or gender, and she certainly doesn't get to have any say over the life of a teenage girl who lives in a different state from her and has no relation to her.The biological reality of the situation is that Gaines is a bully who loves to target vulnerable teenage girls who happen to be trans because she knows she has a large crowd behind her. In the end, apologizing to people like Gaines isn't going to open them up to listening or discussing the issue; it's only going to empower them. Gaines clearly doesn't have an issue with going low. Taking the high road isn't going to elevate Gaines. It only makes it so that she has tools and abilities that decent people like Biles don't have.In other words, because Gaines is willing to be such a nasty and hateful bully, she has an inherent advantage over other women. If she wants her values to remain consistent, it may be time for her to step away from competing against women on this issue.Mey Rude is a staff writer for Out.Voices is dedicated to featuring a wide range of inspiring personal stories and impactful opinions from the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. Cooper Koch reveals two failed auditions to play Menendez brotherhere's who beat him
Cooper Koch is nothing if not tenacious! The 28-year-old actor broke out in 2024 for starring in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story as Erik Menendez. His impassioned performance led to a Golden Globe nomination, a spot in Variety's Actors on Actors interviews, and millions of fans.In his Actors on Actors interview a web series hosted by Variety Koch was paired up with The White Lotus star Sam Nivola. The two discussed playing characters defined by their relationships to their brothers, working with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, and how they got their breakout roles.Fans already knew that Koch was passionate about the Menendez brothers, speaking out about their real-life case and even visiting them in prison. Now, we know how deep that passion goes.During his appearance on Variety's "Actors on Actors," Koch revealed that he had actually literally auditioned for the 2017 limited season dubbed Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders that centered on the Menendez brothers (Koch's second audition ever). And Koch had also auditioned for the 2017 Lifetime movie Menendez: Blood Brothers, once again not booking the role."I just felt like this insane cosmic, universe-y thing that was like, 'I have to play this part,'" Koch told Nivola in their one-on-one interview. "It was just that immense empathy that you feel for a person, and I had to do it."Koch eventually earned his chance to play one of the Menendez brothers on Ryan Murphy's Monsters series on Netflix. The series was so successful that it propelled Koch to become a household name around the world, and a legitimate Emmy contender, too. However, Koch's revelation did some spark a curiosity within us: Who the heck were the other actors who beat him in those auditions for the Lifetime movie and the limited season of Law & Order?Nico TortorellaSee on InstagramNico Tortorella starred as Lyle Menendez in Menendez: Blood Brothers when he was 29 years old. The Shield star Benito Martinez played the Menendez patriarch Jos, and musician Courtney Love played the mother, Kitty Menendez.Tortorella was already a rising star at the time, having played Trevor Sheldon in Scream 4, and starred in the TV shows The Beautiful Life, Make It or Break It, The Following, and Younger. After those shows, Tortorella has often appeared as himself, including on RuPaul's Drag Race and Legendary as a guest judge, and RuPaul's Secret Celebrity Drag Race as a competitor.Over the years, Tortorella came out as bisexual, genderfluid, and polyamorous. The actor also got married to Bethany C. Meyers in 2018, and they have two kids together.Myko OlivierSee on InstagramBefore playing Erik Menendez in Menendez: Blood Brothers, Myko Olivier had many small roles in television and short films, including the MTV series Awkward, Zendaya's Disney series K.C. Undercover, Nickelodeon's Sam & Cat with Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande. He also starred in Glee as one of the Warblers.Since then, Olivier has continued to steadily work on shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Code Black, Doctor Odyssey, and Good Trouble, where he played Tyler Banks for nine episodes.Gus HalperSee on InstagramLaw & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders aired in 2017 and starred Edie Falco as defense attorney Leslie Abramson. Actor Gus Halper played Erik Menendez in the series. Before Law & Order, he had landed roles in TV shows such as Power and Chicago P.D. Halper's career took off after this performance on Law & Order, and he was soon starring in shows like Happy!, Madam Secretary, Ramy, Dickinson, Evil, Fear the Walking Dead, and Law & Order: Organized Crime. In 2023, he appeared in the Oscar-nominated film Rustin as civil rights activist Tom Kahn alongside Colman Domingo (who played the title character).Miles Gaston VillanuevaSee on InstagramOn Law & Order, Lyle Menendez was played by actor Miles Gaston Villanueva. 11 popular Bible passages translated into Polaria secret gay language
Omis and palones, it's time to vada inside the Bona Book!Omis and palones, it's time to vada inside the Bona Book!Suppose you're not familiar with Polari, a fascinating secret language invented by gay men in the U.K. in the first half of the 20th century. In that case, you might not realize that this article just prompted men and women to look inside the Good Book, a.k.a. The Bible.Polari was a gay slang popularized when homosexuality was still illegal in the U.K., necessitating a way for gay men to communicate without being in danger of being arrested. While there are no Polari speakers today, there are those who are working hard to ensure it doesn't disappear forever. Those people include Sister Matic deBauchery of the Ectstatic Dancing Habit (also known as Tim Greening-Jackson), a member of the Manchester Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.Sr. Matic deBauchery is so dedicated to preserving the gay language that he translated the entire Bible into Polari, making one of the most famous and important pieces of literature in the world more accessible to queer audiences and more fun.Sr. Matic is the Mistress of Polari, and after translating the Bible, is working on a translation of the Qoran, according to the Manchester Sisters' website. The entire Bible is available online or as a downloadable PDF for anyone who wants to read it, but if you're just looking to see some of the most well-known verses and passages, we've got a list for you.Keep reading to see eleven of the most well-known Bible passages in the New International Version and in Polari.Genesis 1:1-3NIV: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, Let there be light, and there was light.Polari: In the beginning, Gloria created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was nanti form, and void; and munge was upon the eke of the deep. And the Fairy of Gloria trolled upon the eke of the aquas. And Gloria cackled, Let there be sparkle: and there was sparkle.Exodus 3:1-5NIV: Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There, the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire, it did not burn up. So Moses thought, I will go over and see this strange sightwhy the bush does not burn up. When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, Moses! Moses! And Moses said, Here I am. Do not come any closer, God said. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.Polari: Now Maureen kept the flock of Jethro her Auntie in law, the godly homie of Midian: and she led the flock to the backside of the desert, and trolled to the mountain of Gloria, even to Horeb. And the fairy of the Duchess appeared unto her in a flame of binco fakement out of the midst of a bush: and she looked, and, varda, the bush burned with binco fakement, and the bush was not consumed. And Maureen cackled, "I will now turn aside, and varda this dowry vardaing, why the bush is not burnt." And when the Duchess vardad that she turned aside to varda, Gloria screeched unto her out of the midst of the bush, and cackled, "Maureen, Maureen." And she cackled, "Here am I." And she cackled, "Draw not ajax hither: put off thy slingbacks from off thy plates, for the place whereon thou standest is fabulosa ground."Psalm 23:1-6NIV: The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his names sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.Polari: The Duchess is my shepherd; I shall not want. She maketh me to lie down in green pastures: she leadeth me beside the still aquas. She restoreth my nishta lucoddy: she leadeth me in the paths of bonaness for her name's sake. Any road up, though I mince through the valley of the shadow of carking it, I will fear no nana: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy trolling fakement they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my eke with lube; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall troll after me all the days of my life: and I will lett in the lattie of the Duchess for ever.Proverbs 3:5-7NIV: Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.Polari: Trust in the Duchess with all thine thumping cheat; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge her, and she shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own ogles: fear the Duchess, and troll off from nana.Song of Solomon 1:2-3NIV: Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth for your love is more delightful than wine. Pleasing is the fragrance of your perfumes; your name is like perfume poured out. No wonder the young women love you!Polari: Let her kiss me with the kisses of her screech: for thy love is benar than sherry. Because of the savour of thy bona ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the nanti charvers love thee.Jeremiah 29:11NIV: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.Polari: "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you," cackleth the Duchess, "thoughts of peace, and not of nana, to parker you an expected end."Matthew 6:33-34NIV: But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.Polari: But charper ye first the kingdom of Gloria, and her bonaness; and all these fakements shall be added unto you. Lell therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall lell thought for the fakements of itself. Sufficient unto the journo is the nana thereof.John 3:16NIV: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.Polari: For Gloria so loved the world, that she parkered her only begotten homie chavvie, that whosoever believeth in her should not perish, but have everlasting life.John 14:6NIV: Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."Polari: Josie cackleth unto her, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no homie trolleth unto the Auntie, but by me."Romans 12:2NIV: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Gods will ishis good, pleasing and perfect will.Polari: And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that bona, and acceptable, and absolutely fantabulosa, will of Gloria.Philippians 4:13NIV: I can do all this through him who gives me strength.Polari: I can do all fakements through Crystal which strengtheneth me.
