Why is immigration such a mess? Revisit Julio Torres's 'Problemista'
U.S. lawmakers are sparring over immigration hearings, cases of legal immigrants and tourists being detained continue to grow, and overall tensions between protesters and law enforcement officers keep rising in cities like Los Angeles and beyond. Overall, The New York Times reports that an estimated "900 protesters in at least 10 cities have been arrested since Friday [June 6] in demonstrations against federal immigration raids."Searching the word "immigration" on Google Trends with parameters set to the past 30 days shows top related queries like "what is immigration" and "U.S. immigration," which suggest that the average person is trying to understand what the concept of immigration in the U.S. even means. In 2023, Julio Torres made his big screen debut as the director, writer, and lead star of the surrealist dramedy Problemista released by A24. The film centers on Alejandro, whose life story is similar to Torres's. Both the character and the creator are born in El Salvador, move to the U.S. with big dreams, and must navigate the complex maze of the immigration system. If you haven't seen Problemista and are genuinely confused about why migrants have a hard time navigating the daunting and dizzying dynamics of the U.S. immigration system, you might get a pretty good understanding from the short but potent "maze" scene in the film.So let's break that down. The scene starts with Alejandro (Torres) visiting his immigration lawyer, Khalil (played by Laith Nakli).Khalil asks, "You gotta get another sponsor. Pronto. Rapido. What happened to the toy people? They won't hire you?""I don't know. I mean, they're just not gonna be taking applications for a while," Alejandro replies. An immediately impatient Khalil says, "OK, look, you don't have a while. You have a month to find someone to co-sign your visa. And if you don't, you have to leave the U.S.""Yeah, I, I, I, I've been working on that," Alejandro responds, stuttering. "I started freelancing for this lady. She's Well, whatever. It'll just be a few hours here and there."Khalil asks, "Well, that's rapido. You think this lady can sponsor you?""I mean, we'll see," Alejandro responds.Khalil is fascinated. "We'll see" he muses. "That's a better slogan for us: 'We'll see.'" The immigration lawyer adds, "Look, the other thing is: You can't take money right now. I hope this lady's not paying you.""What do you mean?" Alejandro asks.Khalil explains, "You can't take money until they officially sponsor you."The maze scene in Problemista begins, and legendary actress Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet, Death Becomes Her, Conclave) is the narrator. The rules of the game are as follows:First, you must find a sponsor for a work visa. Then, you must submit it by paying application and lawyer fees totaling up to around $6,000.And only then is Alejandro allowed to earn money Money that he needs so he can submit his application to, well, earn money. And he must do it before the fall of the last grain of sand. The maze is impossible to navigate Unless, of course, he's willing to bend the rules.See on InstagramThe maze scene cuts back to Alejandro facing his immigration attorney."Cash," Khalil says. "You need cash."In the next scene, Alejandro is seen on his computer exploring job posts on Craigslist specifically looking for cash-based opportunities, such as sex work, which is what he ends up doing for money later that night.Problemista is now streaming on Max.

Chris Salvatore on turning 40, 'Real Friends,' and fitting in
For a long time, I did not realize how much I was still carrying.Turning 40 this year came with a lot of reflection, and it showed up in ways I didn't expect especially as I started writing a children's book, My Neighbor Norma, which felt like the most honest and heartfelt thing I had ever done. A story inspired by the beautiful bond I shared with my elderly neighbor, Norma, who taught me so much about kindness, presence, and the beauty of being yourself. Though it's a story for children, it holds truths for people of all ages. It came from love.Underneath the joy of creating something meaningful, I began to feel something rising to the surface. At first, I thought it was shame. Shame for still doing adult content. Shame for having an OnlyFans. Maybe that part of me still needs healing. But as I really sat with it, I realized this wasn't just shame. It was a wound of judgment. That wound, which started when I was a child, still runs deep. I was bullied for being different. I was called names, picked apart, and made to feel like I didn't belong. I was made to feel like there was something wrong with me, and that judgment became internalized. Even all these years later, it still shows up when I am doing something vulnerable and meaningful. It whispers things like, "You are going to be judged. People will not accept you. They will say you are not enough."Writing a children's book brought that old voice roaring back.I started questioning whether I was even allowed to write that book. Would people say it was inappropriate because of my other work? Would they accuse me of having bad intentions? Would they say I wasn't allowed to write stories for kids because I was gay? That wound wasn't just shaped by my childhood; it was later reinforced by my time in the entertainment industry. Over time, I experienced firsthand how producers, directors, agents, and casting directors carry unspoken biases about people who have done adult work. Though it wasn't always said out loud, you can still hear it: This quiet assumption that people who have done adult entertainment are somehow not serious enough, not marketable enough. That you can't be in a family movie, or play a mainstream role, or even get cast on a reality show. Those assumptions in entertainment industry reflect how our entire society still looks down on people who have done adult work. It treats them as less-than, or unworthy of respect. Whether it is rooted in fear, image control, or outdated morality, that bias sends a clear message that you are disqualified from being seen or celebrated in certain spaces.A recent experience brought this home for me in a very real way. A few years ago, I was cast on the reality show The Real Friends of WeHo. After filming a few days with the crew, I felt excited and hopeful about being part of a show that was meant to highlight LGBTQ+ voices and stories. And then, without warning, I got a call saying that I had been cut from the show. I later found out from other cast members that certain people didn't want to film with me because I had an OnlyFans. That experience became even more surreal and, honestly, ironic after realizing that one of the cast members who objected to filming with me actually sent me nude images of himself years before. We had even exchanged flirty messages back then. However, right before the show started filming, he blocked me on social media, and I assumed he was trying to erase any evidence of our past interactions. It was a striking example of how people can hold you to a different standard than they hold themselves, and how quickly they will try to rewrite history when it no longer serves their narrative.Looking back, I realize that his actions were probably driven by fear. Fear that the images we exchanged would somehow get out there. Fear that his own involvement in anything explicit would damage his reputation.Maybe it was because we are taught from a young age that nudity is shameful or dirty. Maybe it was the influence of managers and agents, who often instill deep fear in their clients, warning them that any trace of nudity or adult content could ruin their careers. It wouldn't be the first time I heard someone say something like, "My team told me to scrub everything that showed too much skin," or "They said I had to delete anything explicit if I wanted to be taken seriously."That kind of fear is something I know far too well.I don't hold resentment towards him. Today, I can see that he was just as caught up in the pain of judgment as I was. At the time, however, experiencing that rejection was crushing. It was another moment when the old wound of judgment flared up, reinforcing a message I had carried since childhood: That I would never be fully accepted because of who I am or the choices I've made.It hit me hard. I spiraled into a depression, felt rejected and unworthy, and started questioning everything about myself: My dreams, my work, and my ability to take up any space in this industry. The show, which aired for one season, received a lot of criticism and negative comments from viewers. In a strange way, seeing that helped me remember that other people's judgments were about bigger issues, not about one's worth.Looking back, that experience was a painful but important teacher. It reminded me that real power is not in trying to please everyone or fit into someone else's mold it's about standing in your truth, no matter who chooses to walk away.An experience that broke my spirit also broke something open in me, making room for new feelings of self-acceptance over self-erasure. It taught me that feeling unseen by others didn't stop you from seeing yourself. That you could, and should, stand tall in your own light.I've come to learn that we'll always be up against something. That the goalpost of what's deemed acceptable will keep moving. Years ago, it was about whether out gay actors could still get cast in projects. It then became about the "risks" of featuring trans actors and/or characters. Adult film creators being featured in mainstream media is one of several polarizing topics right now, and we'll be going up against something else tomorrow and beyond. Those lines and frontiers will keep shifting, often making us feel like our inclusion won't come without some fight. As a cisgender white gay man, I hold a level of privilege that many in the LGBTQ+ community do not. While I have faced rejection and judgment, I also know that trans people, particularly trans women of color, face even harsher scrutiny, violence, and erasure. Drag performers are being targeted by politicians who want to ban them from reading books to children, and trans people are fighting every day just to have their basic rights, like their health and humanity, recognized. In a political climate where these communities are under constant attack, it feels more important than ever to use our voices and tell our stories. To speak up not only for ourselves, but also for everyone whose rights and dignity are under threat.I am committed to doing that work, and part of that commitment means recognizing my privilege and making space for others who face even greater barriers. Acceptance isn't just about loving myself. It is about creating a world where we can all be seen, valued, and safe. The solution, ultimately, isn't about chasing acceptance from the outside, or making yourself fit into a box that keeps getting re-packaged to capitalize on a moment. The real solution is internal accepting yourself and accepting others. The solution is refusing to abandon any part of yourself just to make other people more comfortable.Even as I learned to accept myself more fully, I still wrestled with the old wounds of judgment. Before the children's book I wrote came out, for instance, I found myself scrubbing my social media. I deleted any sensual or revealing photos, and I stopped promoting my OnlyFans. I convinced myself that people would reject me if they saw all of me, that I had to make myself smaller, and more palatable, or more appropriate. I convinced myself that the only way to be accepted as an author was to hide parts of myself that didn't fit that particular mold.To my surprise, once the book was released, the backlash I had prepared myself for never came. Instead, I received messages from parents, teachers, friends, and strangers saying how much the story moved them. People told me they cried, and that it opened conversations in their homes, and that it reminded them of good still existing in the world. The response was filled with love.No one questioned my intentions. No one accused me of anything. Except for one person: A former friend who I hadn't spoken to in years, shared a comment that read, "Parents beware."That was it. One sentence. One person.Even though we hadn't spoken in years, this person had once known me in a way that felt real. We had shared enough parts of our lives that prompted me to calling them a close friend at one point in my life. Though we had drifted apart, their words still carried weight in my mind. It didn't like the judgment of a stranger. It felt like it came from someone who knew my flaws and my dreams. It felt personal, and it brought up old fears that people who see us most clearly are usually the ones who reject us the hardest. For a moment, it made me question whether those fears were still true. There is something deeply human about how we internalize a voice of doubt and let it echo in places that still feel tender. It reminds me how our self-worth is shaped not just by what others say, but by what we still believe about ourselves. The psychology of it is fascinating and humbling: How one small voice can tap into something much bigger inside of us. That we're still longing to be fully accepted exactly as we are.One of the most important lessons I took away from writing My Neighbor Norma one that Norma herself would say to me all the time was, "Don't try to be anybody else. Just be you. Be smart."So I am making a choice. I'm choosing love over fear.Even in writing this and sharing it now, I can feel the fear rising. I still wonder how it will be received. But by speaking my truth, I am choosing love. Love for my younger self. Love for the man I have become. Love for the journey I'm still on.If you're reading this and ever felt like you had to hide parts of yourself to be accepted, I want you to know you're allowed to be your entire self. You don't have to fit into someone else's idea of what is respectable or lovable. You don't have to choose between your past and your future. You can stand in your truth, exactly as you are, and still be worthy of love.Sometimes, the most healing thing we can do is stop asking for permission and start offering ourselves the acceptance we've been waiting for.You are already enough. You have always been enough. You can follow Chris Salvatore on social media by visiting his Linktree. 'No Kings' protests: What to know about the June 14 rallies against Trump
No Kings: What to knowThis Saturday, June 14, is set to be the largest mass protest of President Donald Trump's second term so far.June 14 is a notable day for many reasons. In the United States, the day is known as Flag Day, commemorating the adoption of the U.S. flag on that day in 1777. It's the anniversary of the Army's founding, which will have happened 250 years ago this year. It's Donald Trump's 79th birthday. It will also be marked by the largest mass mobilization of protests and rallies since Trump's second term started in January. In celebration of Flag Day, the Army's anniversary, and his birthday, Trump has planned a large-scale military parade for Saturday through the streets of Washington, D.C. The parade will reportedly include over 6,000 soldiers, 49 aircraft, and 128 vehicles, including tanks, 25 horses, two mules, and a dog in "a spectacular military parade in Washington, D.C., like no other," according to an Instagram video posted by Trump. That won't be the only significant event that day. Across the country, and in a few places in Mexico and Canada, people are organizing No Kings protests and rallies in response to what many see as an increase in authoritarian power grabs and overreach from the current administration. Over 2,000 No Kings protests and rallies are scheduled for June 14. Here's what you should know about them. What are the No Kings protests about? The No Kings movement is in direct response to actions taken by the Trump administration that many see as corrupt, authoritarian, and morally wrong."Theyve defied our courts, deported Americans, disappeared people off the streets, attacked our civil rights, and slashed our services," the movement's website reads. "The corruption has gone too far. No thrones. No crowns. No kings."The protests are being held on the June 14 to counterbalance Trump's military parade in Washington, D.C., which is seen by many as another sign of his administration's excess and corruption. Organizers are calling for the protests to be peaceful."No Kings is a nationwide day of defiance," the website says. "From city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, were taking action to reject authoritarianism and show the world what democracy really looks like."Are the No Kings protests tied to immigration raids and ICE?While the No Kings protests aren't directly related to the anti-ICE protests over recent immigration raids in Los Angeles and surrounding areas, the raids are an important issue to the movement."Whether you're outraged by attacks on civil rights, skyrocketing costs, abductions and disappearances, the gutting of essential services, or the assault on free speech this moment is for you," the website says, referencing mass arrests made by ICE agents in workplace raids in areas like the LA Fashion District.Where are No Kings protests? There are over 2,000 No Kings protests planned across the United States, with a few also scheduled to take place in Canada and Mexico. To find out where the closest one is, check out the movement's map. What are Donald Trump's plans for June 14?Trump will be in Washington, D.C., celebrating his birthday with a large military parade, something he has wanted to do since his first term as president. Will there be a No Kings protest in Washington, D.C.?No, there will not be a No Kings protest in the nation's capital. According to the movement's website, it is avoiding Washington, D.C., because that is where Trump's parade will be."Instead of allowing this birthday parade to be the center of gravity, we will make action everywhere else the story of America that day: people coming together in communities across the country to reject strongman politics and corruption," it says. Instead, No Kings is hosting a large march and rally in Philadelphia in an attempt "to draw a clear contrast between our people-powered movement and the costly, wasteful, and un-American birthday parade in Washington."What has Donald Trump said about the protests?Trump has said that he has no patience for anyone who wants to protest the parade in the capital. "If theres any protester that wants to come out, they will be met with very big force," Trump said, per NBC News. "I havent even heard about a protest, but you know, this is people that hate our country, but they will be met with very heavy force."

'And Just Like That' S3 E3 Recap: Why would a man be there?
So few of the men turn out to be likable in the Sex and the City universe, but the women tend to let the nice guys finish last. However, in And Just Like That..., the men are testing our leading ladies' patience in this week's episode. From unclear relationship boundaries to backstabbing, the men are bothering these women living in this picture-perfect version of New York City. After an uneventful second episode, the pace picks back up with episode 3, titled "Carrie Golightly."This third episode sees our show's protagonist, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), decide that she doesn't want to be a corporate shill. She declines trips from Google or SXSW; instead, she'd rather go to Williamsburg, Virginia, to go and see her romantic entanglement, Aidan (John Corbett), and his two teenage sons. She manages to convince Seema (Sarita Choudhury) to tag along, but only after Seema gives a Samantha-esque one-liner: "I wouldn't even travel to Williamsburg, Brooklyn." Back home in NYC, Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker) is dealing with documentary production woes. At the same time, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) seems to be investing more time into a budding romance, and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is trying to revive her party-girl days to sell more paintings. There was much to chew on with this episode (unfortunately, not Mama's Homestyle Fried Chicken), so here are our hot takes for this episode. If we had to choose, there are only three men we enjoy. There are only three tolerable men in this show: Charlotte's husband, Harry (Evan Handler); Lisa's husband, Herbert (Christopher Jackson); and Adam (Logan Marshall-Green). The rest are on thin ice. Christopher Jackson, Evan Handler on And Just Like ThatCraig Blankenhorn/HBO MaxHarry is a goofy, but lovable, supportive husband who wants to see Charlotte thrive and have some fun along the way. He goes for a night out on the town with her and the gallery girls to try and sell some paintings at the after-after-after parties, but can't seem to get his new jeans unbuttoned and accidentally pisses himself. But instead of making the situation about himself, he puts on his big boy pants, takes himself home, and champions Charlotte's quest to make some extra commission. We'll get to Herbert in a second, but Adam, the gardener who is tasked with reviving Carrie's outdoor oasis, deserves his moment to shine. Not only is he a born-and-bred New Yorker, but he's a man whose work landed him a feature in Vogue, where he was deemed "New York's Plant Picasso." As if he couldn't be more attractive, he's not shy about going after what he wants. He is outside Carrie's Gramercy Park townhouse when he runs into our favorite luxury real estate broker, Seema, as she stops by the house to pick Carrie up on the way to the airport. The two engage in some flirty banter, but it seems as though Seema may have underestimated his undeniable rizz.As Carrie gets into the car, she reminds Adam to watch over Shoe (her cat), and he confidently quips back, looking directly at Seema, saying, "Ive never met a kitty I couldnt bend to my will." If that doesn't make you blush, we genuinely don't know what could. We would love to see these two get together. We've had enough of Ryan Serhant in his Netflix show.Yes, Ryan Serhant is a good-looking man, but we'll never forgive him for what he did to Seema in the name of "business." After her gay business partner, Elliot (John Glover), tells her that he's retiring, he reveals that Serhant is buying his stake in the company, becoming the primary controlling partner and putting his name on the business. She tries to reason with the two men, but they are steadfast in their decision to ice her out of the business deal. So she decides that if she's gonna be kicked out, she might as well start on her dream of owning her real estate firm with her name on it. Ryan SerhantCraig Blankenhorn/HBO MaxSerhant quickly became one of the most visible brokers in the city after his (admittedly entertaining) Netflix real estate show, Owning Manhattan. His role in And Just Like That... is proving that even women with wealth, power, and money are subjected to the patriarchy. Seema tried to get him to agree to keep her name on the logo, but his acquisition means that he will steamroll the entire operation and slap his last name on everything in his signature color, bright cobalt blue. His presence makes sense as the catalyst for Seema's career change, but it doesn't mean we're happy about it.Now, why is Steve McQueen in it?No shade towards Academy Award-winning director, screenwriter, and producer Steve McQueen. We've never met, but we assume you're lovely. However, we have a bone to pick with you (or this fictionalized version of you, because the real one has nothing to do with this).Lisa learns that her longtime producer, Grace (Quincy Tyler Bernstein), got offered a dream job to work with McQueen (who directed 12 Years a Slave). Instead of finishing out their current project, Grace is considering abandoning ship and taking the job immediately, which Lisa takes as a dig and gets upset with her about. She takes out her frustration on a pot of mashed potatoes when her husband, Herbert (Christopher Jackson), comes in. He seems to have taken some of his level-headedness as George Washington in the original company of Hamilton to his character in this show because he listens to her frustration, calmly explains Grace's side, and helps talk her down from a ledge. That's why we love him; he's a considerate partner who doesn't ask his wife to sacrifice her ambitions, and an even better dad.Again, no shade towards the real McQueen (but the show version can catch this smoke), but we know you'd argue that this is just business. Still, we're pissed off that you even did this to our girl in the first place.

  • Worldpride 2025 Trixie Mattel Solid Pink Disco
    WWW.OUT.COM
Glitter or grit? How Trixie Mattels Solid Pink Disco turns crocs into a queer battle cry
Like many queer people, I've been going to pride events longer than I've been out myself. I've witnessed and participated in marches and block parties, parades and protests with tens of thousands and tens of tens, the flooded shutdown blocks of New York City, and the timid display of queer vendors in Fort Worth, Texas, outnumbered by protestors. In my short life, I've experienced the two, presumably ever-distancing, sides of the queer experience in the United States. All of which informs my character, my perspective, and ultimately, my interest in Trixie Mattel. Trixie's resume is challenging to convey. After competing in season 7 of RuPaul's Drag Race and winning season 3 of RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars, she had a solid, devoted fanbase from the show alone. Between seasons, she created a stand-up comedy tour, released her debut studio album, and co-starred in three seasons of the YouTube show UNHhhh with Drag Race alum Katya Zamolodchikova. She has also been a judge on a drag queen singing competition show and released an EP, a double album, and a New York Times Bestseller book (co-written with Katya Zamo). She produced and starred in two seasons of a home renovation show, Trixie Motel, in which she renovated a Palm Springs motel into a fully operating, 7-room, Trixie-fantasy motel. She also went on five tours (two co-headlining again with Katya Zamo), created a highly successful makeup company, and published a feature documentary, Moving Parts, with her business collaborator and then-partner, David Silver. As an individual or a persona, Trixie Mattel is a true multi-hyphenate, often existing in this magical intersection of genres you didn't see coming. When asked what she might recommend to creatives at any age trying to find their own hyphenates, she advised all artists to feel as empowered as drag queens to explore across mediums."Drag queens get to do hair and sew and make music and tell jokes," she told me. "We don't limit ourselves in any one discipline." Did I mention some of her music is folksy, and she plays the autoharp? A potentially steep departure from the glittering fantasia of the Drag DJ Set, Solid Pink Disco. That is, until you see it.The entire evening felt artfully constructed in Trixie's likeness. The show's two openers, Drag Race alum Shea Coule and DJ Mateo Segade, set the tone for a non-negotiable girly, funk-a-licious dance party akin to a giddy sleepover. True to the invitation, every person in the crowd I could see wore at least one article of pink, if not a head-to-toe set. Wigs, mostly bright pink or (Trixie) blonde, scattered the crowd. Older gay guys with shirts off, gorgeous-eyeliner-goth lesbians, and groups of friends held hands and drinks and sang together. Tiaras, glitter cowboy hats, a handful of Trixie-beat faces, a few impressive Juno Birch-a-likes, and generally, a venue full of queer people were bouncing by the time Trixie walked out. Then, the ground began to shake. All boas and screaming and hands in the air, the place erupted as Trixie pranced onstage between two dancers to the opening, stylized strums of "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'". High-energy beats took off while Trixie twirled in a pink, fringe, sequin mini-dress. Weaving 60s to 80s, hot girl pop and rap and disco bled together like a pillow fight that had staff and security getting down as they passed out water bottles. "I Feel Love," "Gimmie Gimmie," and "Hung Up" were warm, classic throughlines between modern pop hits by Kim Petras, Chappell Roan, and others. The music never stopped but was punctuated by costume changes and partnered dance numbers as the performer transitioned between roles, ranging from a saloon showgirl to an 80s exercise video instructor. At one point, she jumped rope in sync with the dancers and called us jobless for turning up on a Tuesday at her show; the crowd cheered in agreement. Behind a gorgeous woman bouncing in an enormous blonde wig were captivating, often hilarious animations of Trixie's signature face. Visuals of aliens, Renaissance, or flapper dancing, Trixie Mattel wove in and out of compilations of digital culture that seemed to coexist with, or even inform, the Trixie Universe.Iconic clips of I Love Lucy, The Powerpuff Girls, and snippets of Madonna music videos shared the screen with 1950s heart-eyed cartoons, horror movies, and anime. Stamped with out-of-context clips from Trixie's own YouTube videos, gluing down eyebrows, or putting on 10 pairs of eyelashes, it all felt like a house party thrown by a bestie while the parents were away. The theme of "pure" queer, feminine fun was clear; however, totally Trixie. Despite the genre and the 10 PM on a Tuesday setting, the evening was thoughtfully designed by the same person who creates folk and pop songs, sometimes on the same album. Nods to western or southern glamour didn't stop at the opening number. One of the signature moments in this iteration of the Solid Pink Disco tour: midway through the set, Trixie holds up a pair of pink, bejeweled crocs and a pair of fringe, sparkling, heeled boots. Offering them to the crowd to "make the audience choose, gladiator style," she takes turns raising each to the sky as if to measure the cheers. "It probably won't surprise you, but they always go for the Crocs," Mattel lamented when asked if the heels ever win that battle. It felt like the perfect metaphor for the Trixie persona. She agreed, "That's how I know that they are my people." When her manicured hands raised the Crocs in victory, the audience howled in agreement. That was the moment I began to absorb the impressive unity brought by Solid Pink DiscoI had never witnessed such coordination in a crowd. To request your audience wear a color is one thing; to see a few thousand people honor that request in their unique style felt altogether different. That said, for presumably obvious political and geographical reasons, Pride this year already felt different. Washington, D.C., as the host of the 2025 World Pride, had been generating headlines for months. Never mind a crowd of people in pink gathering for a Drag Queen DJ set on a Tuesday night. "In the [same] way Pride is important, a party like Solid Pink Disco just reminds you that you have nothing to be ashamed of." That much was definitely true, but again, it felt like something moresomething distinctly Trixie. When asked how she hoped Solid Pink Disco would resonate with fans, Mattel hoped, aside from dancing until the point of exhaustion, that "people feel liberated and free at the party and carry that feeling into their everyday lives."Put simply, "it inspires people to keep some pink in their closet for a rainy day." I felt it working on me. As a relatively busy queer person with a 9-to-5 job and an appetite for personal projects, I couldn't remember the last time I painted my nails. I could feel the irony in my writing of artistic liberation inspired by drag queens. I thought of Alaska Thunderfuck [5000], another Drag Race competitor and winner of All Stars season 2. She has a song that reminds fans and peers alike: If you're not wearing nails, you're not doing drag. The next day, I painted my nails with the only pink polish I had. Since then, I smile when I see it in the mirror or type at my computer, remembering Trixie's remix of "Wannabe."I'm already thinking about what color I want next. For the past week, I've often thought of Trixie's sparkly pink Crocs. How the joke probably stemmed from necessity, the more comfortable choice is obvious.I thought of all the versions of Trixie fans I watched file into the venue, how they united in humor and comfort, and the color pink, which they lovingly described as "healthy escapism" by the slumber party host.In the landscape of life, Trixie thinks, "I guess if Solid Pink Disco the party is the Croc, then the partygoers are the Jibbitz. Maybe that makes me the foot? I don't know, ask me next Pride."ARRANGED FOR OUT.COM BY NIKKI AYE, DIGITAL PHOTO EDITORVoices is dedicated to featuring a wide range of inspiring personal stories and impactful opinions from the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. 'Just in Time': How Jonathan Groff brought Bobby Darin to Broadway
Biopic musicals on Broadway go one of two ways: These shows can be an obvious tourist trap for out-of-towners who want the chance to sing songs like Sweet Caroline with a crowd, or they can be carefully constructed retellings of iconic entertainers that are imbued with heart and soul. Happily, the latter category includes Just in Time, the Jonathan Groff-led bio-jukebox musical centered around the mid-century crooner Bobby Darin, known for hits like Dream Lover, Beyond the Sea, and Splish Splash. The Tony-winning actor takes audiences on an emotional ride throughout the singers tumultuous life, which was tragically cut short at the age of 37 due to a weak heart caused by recurring bouts of rheumatic fever.Groff says that Just in Time almost didnt happen. But the shows producer, Tom Kirdahy, helped him launch the idea of a Bobby Darin project off the ground. In 2019, when Groff was starring as Seymour in the off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors, which Kirdahy also produced, Groff pitched him an idea about Darin and revealed he was obsessed with him. They decided at that moment that they were going to make the show. He was just one of those performers who just resonated with me in my soul, says Groff, who has shared that as a child he would twirl in his mothers heels listening to Darins hits. He was the rare male performer that I felt, when I watched him, [could] activate the same part of me that got me really excited about the great divas like Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand . He was this male singer that wasnt just male vibrato. He had this passion and energy he was an incredible performer, Groff adds. There were some logistical obstacles to launching the production, including the existence of an Australian jukebox musical based on Darins life called Dream Lover, which had a Melbourne run in 2017-2018. They were told it wouldnt be easy to get the rights to Darins life, Groff says. But Kirdahy met with Darins son, Dodd, and had lunch with him. I want to litigate the case for your fathers greatness, Kirdahy told Dodd over lunch, as recounted to Out. I believe theres only one person who can do this, and its Jonathan Groff. By the end of their meeting, he says, he walked out with the rights to Darins story, and they embarked on a six-year journey to bring it to the Broadway stage. Michele Pawk as Polly Walden, Bobby Darins mother (center), with Valeria Yamin (left) & Julia Grondin (right).Matthew Murphy/Evan ZimmermanGroff has been involved with the project since its inception, which is a first for him. That made his nomination at this years Tony Awards that much more special. The energy that happens in that theater every night is so special, says Groff, who is also a producer. The Tony committee honored me and our show with six nominations, which makes it even more intense and emotional because it takes a village and many years to create something, so when it gets celebrated, its extraordinary. Its clear that Kirdahy and Groff have a special connection, as the two showered one another with praise during their pre-Tonys interview. Kirdahy a Broadway bigwig whose rsum includes The Inheritance, Hadestown, and the current revival of Gypsy was married to the late, great American playwright Terrence McNally, who died in 2020 after battling COVID, just one year after they started working on Just in Time. Kirdahy says that making this show saved his life, because before McNally died, he made Kirdahy promise the project would get made. Kirdahy shares how it was spiritually nourishing to honor his late husbands wishes. In some ways, I feel like Terrence is a spiritual godfather of the show, Kirdahy says, choking up. Hes watching over us with such pride.Just in Time isnt the only way McNallys legacy will live on through these two creatives. On May 30, he was honored with a street named after him in New York City, with Groff taking part. Thats in addition to the upcoming movie adaptation of his stage musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, starring Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna, and Tonatiuh, which Kirdahy is producing. Theres not a day that goes by where I dont think about him, and I owe it to him to do my best work because he had so much belief in my abilities even when I didnt, Kirdahy says. And the message of Just in Time is vital in this moment. The musical is about a life well lived, which asks us to be mindful about how precious time is, Kirdahy sums up. Its casting in a time of queer erasure is also critical. That Groff is a gay actor who leads us to this incredible connection across generations and across demographics is far more powerful than, frankly, we understood [it] would be when we began this journey, he adds. When they began creating Just in Time several years ago, we didnt really know how divided we were going to be and that the arts would be under assault, Kirdahy says. This show is a testament to the power of live theater and the community that gets created and the ties that bind us. Maybe its a path forward for sanity and shared joy, rather than the kind of sort of incessant deliverance of trauma that is keeping us apart. This article is part of the Out July/August issue, which hits newsstands May 27.
