After founding the worlds first Transgender District, Aria Said is reclaiming rest as resistance
In a bustling caf or perhaps on a luxurious velvet chaise lounge in some fabulous house in The Lone Star State, Aria Sa'id might be delicately sipping tea while lost in the pages of a fashion magazine. The 35-year-old might modestly tell you she's just another woman trying to navigate life. But don't let that humility fool you. Aria has pioneered groundbreaking initiatives and established herself as an influential trans advocate. But what's most captivating about her is the honesty with which she shares her path: the struggles, the triumphs, and the quiet moments of her journey. "I've been in the game since I was a teenager," she casually remarks. Sa'id is best known for founding the world's first transgender district in San Francisco's historic Tenderloin neighborhood, a densely populated area with a rich trans history and threatened by gentrification. What started as a bold move to reclaim space and legacy quickly turned into a beacon of global inspiration. But leading such transformative work wasn't always glamorous. Sa'id is candid about the toll activism took on her spirit, a sentiment echoed by many others who place their bodies on the front of the movement. Despite accolades, visibility, and speaking engagements that took her around the globe, she describes her leadership tenure as "some of the worst times of my life." The isolation and responsibility were overwhelming, culminating in her facing profound personal loss when one of her young staff members tragically passed away at the brutal hands of a transphobic attacker. Aria Sa'Id in her chic and stylish home. courtesy picturedThe exhaustion wasn't merely emotional. Aria recalls burying trans women across the country, quietly stepping in when others stepped out, bearing the weight of a community too often left unsupported after the tragedy. "When I would reach out to those families, I was always amazed that nobody had ever talked to them," she admits with a quiet sigh. "They're left to pick up the pieces" as their trans daughter is going viral for being murdered. She openly acknowledges her breakdown and the pivotal moment that catalyzed her shift toward wanting the 'soft life.' The contrast couldn't be more striking as she moved from the intensity of frontline activism to curating life's small, luxurious moments. She now champions the idea that self-care, space, and intentional living are not just frivolous fantasies but radical acts of resistance, especially for Black trans women. Her transition to Houston from San Francisco was equally spiritual as it was geographic. "I needed a change," Aria reflects, eyes sparkling with the discovery of newfound joys in a city she unexpectedly loves. "Houston surprised me," she laughs, describing the contrasts of luxurious G-wagons parked beside neighborhood BBQ joints, along with a community more supportive than she imagined possible. It's in this new chapter that Aria's love of fashion has reemerged. Her platform, Lush Life, is as much a style guide as it is a manifesto for romanticizing everyday existence. She fiercely believes in redefining abundance beyond material wealth. "Who gets to tell us what luxury is?" she challenges playfully. She reaffirms that the soft life is not linked to a large bank account or the "need a sprawling estate" to enjoy living beautifully within one's means. Yet, amidst this serene vision, Aria remains acutely aware of the harsh realities. She, like many trans and queer bodies, is navigating an escalating climate of transphobia and homophobia while simultaneously advocating for joy and tranquility. It can be an ongoing challenge. However, through these challenges, Aria continues to lend her voice and share her experiences to uplift and protect. She remains connected to the community, supporting or consulting with local and regional organizations. By partnering with brands committed to authentic representation, such as BAACAL, Aria bridges her passion for advocacy with her personal style. "We only get one guarantee to do life one time," she muses, echoing sentiments reflected in the ethos of Virgil Abloh's philosophy. "You are the designer of your life and you get to custom design your life." Within us, we all have a designer. Someone who takes the fabric of life, cutting and draping it so that we can live boldly and beautifully. And as Pride Month unfolds, Aria Sa'id reminds us that activism isn't confined to the streets or advisory boards. It's also found in living authentically and joyfully, luxuriously in all the soft, quiet spaces we deserve to inhabit.

Hollywood needs more queer Muslim storieshere are 5 to consider
Name a Muslim. Go ahead, call them out. Ramy Youssef! Yes. Hasan Minhaj - Yes! The stars of Hulus comedy series Deli Boys Saagar Shaikh and Asif Ali. Any women? Malala! OK. Now name a gay Muslim. Anyone? Yes, Tan France is one. Yes, Im one too. Yes, Tan France and I have the same hair. Thats not necessarily a gay Muslim thing. (Or maybe it is.) But are you struggling to name anyone else? I mean, probably. Its fine. Who cares? Wait. But is it fine? Should we care? I think, respectively, No and Hell, yes. I mean, we consume content at a truly alarming rate. Some of that content must feature queer Muslims, right? Well, less than 1 percent of speaking characters on television are Muslim, period. So maybe, 1 percent of that 1 percent are queer or trans?More than that, research has shown that Muslims are one of the most negatively portrayed minorities in U.S. media. Most people nowadays get their news, politics, sports, truths, recipes, workout tips, and factual data from popular culture. Yes, that includes TV and film, but it's really Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, headlines (not articles), and memes (not books). So our opinions are formed based on little factual information about people, society, and the truth. Those opinions are shaping everything from the way we treat other humans to policy and law. Slight tangent here: At the Sundance Film Festival, I watched this incredible new doc, Heightened Scrutiny, from director Sam Feder. The film follows Chase Strangio, a brilliant trans lawyer who works for the American Civil Liberties Union, and his legal battle around the L.W. v. Skrmetti case. The landmark case takes on Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for minors, a law that threatens to codify discrimination and violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. The film delves into how politicians, lawyers, and judges have used news articles, social media posts, and headlines as fact regarding a so-called dange to trans adolescents who receive said care. All the misinformation is being used at the highest levels to hurt and endanger our communities. So then how does that apply to Muslims? As a vilified and publicly maligned group in the U.S., we face danger every day. You may not think Muslims matter in your community, but they do. We do. Muslims make up over 25 percent of the worlds population. That's more than 2.1 billion people. And if there are that many of us in the world, you better believe some of us be gay. I mean, you probably know gay Muslims that you didnt know were gay or Muslim. Or maybe you dont know any of these stories from our collective global history at all. And lets face it, its unlikely youre gonna stumble upon them based on the job Hollywood has done so far. So Ive taken it upon myself to be a guide, if you will. Ive been doing it for everyone in my life for over 20 years. Why stop now? I will quit when were ahead. My career as an actor, then writer, and now director and producer is dedicated to telling queer Muslim stories and to centering the experiences of my communities, often using comedy to connect us to audiences. But we need to move beyond comedy and beyond trauma to explore a new queer Muslim cinematic universe that spans all genres, demographics, platforms, and formats. What better time than Pride for my LGBTQ+ entertainment industry fam to get up to speed on some of the gayest Muslims in history? I think we should be writing about these sexy, powerful, brilliant people. I invite you to be inspired by these little pitches, and together, lets make a TV show, fan fiction, romantasy, smut if you want, or a Hollywood epic.A SHORT LIST OF QUEER MUSLIM IP AND CHARACTERS YOU SHOULD BE DEVELOPING: (disclaimer, I am not a historian, Im a writer, filmmaker, and regular human inspired by the possibilities, romance, and drama of our people)Abu Nawaz 756-814Historical drama, erotic epic. A Persian poet in Baghdad in the court of Caliph Harun al-Rashid. Abu Nawaz wrote about wine, love, and pleasure very homoerotic, very male-on-male gaze. His work was shared widely until the 20th century when countries and governments started burning his books. He may have drunk himself to death. Theres even a gay group named after him the Abu Nawaz Association. Heres an excerpt from a translated version of one of his poems, A Boys Beauty: Slim-waisted, with a cheek so bright,it shames the rose, outshines the light. His curls like nightfall, lips like wineI drink his smile and call it mine.If love for boys be sin, then yesin sin I live, and I confess.Rumi (1207-1273) and Shams (1185-?) Im thinking something in the vein of Portrait of a Lady on Fire, In the Mood for Love, or The English Patient. Its unequivocally one of the greatest love stories of all time, but we dont know whether this love ever manifested in a physical relationship, but the love Rumi had for Shams was undeniable. When Rumi met Shams in 1244, their spiritual bond was so intense it reshaped Rumis life and poetry. Shams became not just Rumis teacher but his beloved mirror, awakening divine love within him. Their connection defied convention. It was so intimate and consuming, it stirred jealousy among Rumis followers. After Shamss mysterious disappearance, Rumi mourned through ecstatic verse, referring to his very soul as Shams. Rumis greatest poems are love letters to Shams: The moment I heard my first love story, I started looking for you, not knowing how blind that was. Lovers dont finally meet somewhere. Theyre in each other all along.Suleiman the Magnificent 1495-1566This has Game of Thrones written all over it. Born in Trabzon in what is now Turkey, he became the sultan of the Ottoman Empire in 1520, unexpectedly inheriting the throne at 26. Hes depicted as the ruler of the world, someone to unite the East and West, the rightful inheritor of Rome. After his 46-year reign, he was deemed magnificent because of his military conquests, his legal policies, and cultural advancements in art and literature. And he was very close to an Albanian slave, Ibrahim.Over the years, Suleiman gave him the highest titles including Grand Wazir, Governor General of South Eastern Europe. Suleiman even had a bed made next to him for Ibrahim in Topkapi Palace, now a museum. This palace was an all-male space that was supposed to house one adult male. But during Suleimans reign, there were two. He even made Ibrahim the Royal Falconer, for fucks sake. Eventually, Ibrahim fell in love with and married a Ukrainian concubine, Roxlana (a.k.a. Hrrem Sultana). After their wedding, she had Ibrahim killed, perhaps out of jealousy. Clearly, this makes for an epic tale.Umm Kulthum 1898-1975She would be the center of our musical biopic meets musical drama. An Egyptian singer, songwriter, and actor, she married a man, and theres no confirmation she was queer. But everything about her exuded queer icon. She surrounded herself with women, clutched a silk scarf during performances, and wore floor-length gowns. When she was younger, shed dress as a boy to perform since singing in public was not allowed for girls. Her performances were legendary and could last over five hours. She had more nicknames than I have regular names. Those included "Star of the East," "Mother of the Arabs," "The Voice of Egypt," and The Lady, to name a few.Muhsin Hendricks 1967-2025 This would be an RBG-esque documentary. Born in Cape Town, he was the world's first out gay imam. After studying Islamic theology in Karachi, he returned to South Africa, where he courageously came out in 1996, leading to his dismissal from religious teaching positions. In response, he founded the Inner Circle (later the Al-Fitrah Foundation), creating a supportive space for LGBTQ+ Muslims to reconcile their faith and identity. Hendricks's advocacy extended globally through workshops, interfaith dialogues, and appearances in documentaries like A Jihad for Love, promoting inclusive interpretations of Islamic texts. Tragically, on February 15, 2025, he was fatally shot and killed in South Africa.Listen. You dont have to wait till were dead to write about us or support our stories. There are lots of people who are alive right now whose work we should adapt for the screen Like Samra Habibs book We Have Always Been Here, Fatimah Asghars When We Were Sisters, or remember Tan France? Hes got an incredible memoir, Naturally Tan, about his life and childhood that I wish were a TV show. There's also Zaina Arafats incredible You Exist Too Much or Randa Jarrar. Just pick any one of her books like You, Me, and Mohammed Ali, A Map of Home, or Love Is an Ex-Country. There is no shortage of incredible, spellbinding stories by queer Muslims to repopulate our culture with the truth and the reality of who we are.Fawzia Mirza is a filmmaker and actor whose work includes Signature Move. Her upcoming feature, The Queen of My Dreams, is a semi-autobiographical celebration of family and queerness starring Amrit Kaur (The Sex Lives of College Girls), Nimra Bucha (Ms. Marvel), and Hamza Haq (Transplant) that come out in theaters June 20.

  • Fubar Arnold Schwarzenegger Fortune Feimster
    WWW.OUT.COM
How Arnold helped FUBAR's Fortune Feimster become an action star
If youve had the pleasure of seeing her laugh-out-loud stand-up shows or Netflix comedy specials like Sweet & Salty and Good Fortune, you know that Fortune Feimster comes armed with an arsenal of good jokes and gut-busting anecdotes. But have you ever seen her armed with a pistol or automatic weapon while taking down some bad guys? If not, you can in the Netflix original series FUBAR where she plays Roo Russell, a wise-cracking CIA agent (and yes, shes gay) with a talent for firing off some highly amusing zingers to her ragtag group of operatives. Those fellow CIA operatives are led by Luke Brunner, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who often leads his team of tight-knit secret agents into high-stakes missions that often end up FUBAR (fucked up beyond all recognition), hence the shows name. Feimster, who is best known for appearing in funny films like Office Christmas Party and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar and television shows like The Mindy Project, officially entered her era as an action-comedy star when FUBAR first debuted on Netflix in 2023. Now, The L Word: Generation Q star is back to once again dabble in this mold-breaking genre and reprise her role as Roo in FUBAR season 2, which premieres on Netflix on June 12. Arnold Schwarzenegger as Luke Brunner, Monica Barbaro as Emma Brunner, Travis Van Winkle as Aldon Reece, Fortune Feimster as Roo Russell in FubarCourtesy of NetflixOnce again, she reunites with Schwarzenegger and her team of CIA comrades played by Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Travis Van Winkle (Road House), and Milan Carter (Dolemite Is My Name). In season 2, Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) and Guy Burnet (Oppenheimer) join the cast as two villains who are plotting a world threat that convinces our lovable group of heroes to come out of hiding and embark on yet another perilous mission.Working side by side with the guy known as The Terminator in explosive action sequences is no small feat, and its a pinch me role Feimster never imagined herself taking on, as she told Out during this exclusive interview. While out promoting FUBAR season 2, the comedian turned action star took some time speak about the unforgettable action-comedy tips she learned from Schwarzenegger, her seductive dance number with the hunky Van Winkle, and whether or not Roo will find a lesbian love interest in the yet-to-be confirmed FUBAR season 3 and beyond. The word legend gets tossed around a lot these days, but Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of those actors who fits the bills. Even though you had already worked with him for an entire season, did you still have those pinch me moments where you can't believe that you're working side by side with The Terminator?Yeah, at this point, he's one of the few world-famous movie stars. There's few people in the world that don't know who he is. We've gotten to know him in such a personal way and have all become friends so going into season 2, I think we felt so comfortable that you at times sort of forget that. You'll then be out in the world with him, like, we would go ride bikes with him or go to dinner and just see how people react to him. You quickly remember that this guy has been a part of so many people's lives for so long, and then you see him doing these big speeches and weighing in on things going on in the world. He's just a very impressive person. He is very a pinch me kind of person to work with. With films like Kindergarten Cop, Arnold is one of those actors who helped write the book on blending action with comedy. You're becoming this action-comedy star now because of FUBAR, so what words of wisdom or memorable advice did he offer you in regards to blending these two genres as an actor?Well, it was certainly a trip to be offered this part because I just did not think anyone would think of me for an action part. So I was really excited to take on the role to just show people that this can look many different kinds of ways as far as delivering action and the type of person who can do it. But, yeah, he was just very, have fun with it. And he would give me little tips, like when shooting the gun, don't blink, and things like that. One of the most memorable action scenes I had with him, in the first season, we were in a cabin, and there were all these explosions going off and debris everywhere. And he and I had to army crawl across this cabin beside each other. And so I'm just thinking in my head, you got to keep up with him. You got to keep up with him. And then when they yelled cut! he looked over at me and said, Now you know what I've been doing for the last 40 years. And I thought, man, this is such a trip.On the flip side, were there any comedic pointers you ever offered to him?He certainly doesn't need my help. Hes so in touch with his own sense of humor and has such a great sense of humor. I loved how much he appreciated comedy. Milton Berle was one of his good friends, and he would tell me stories about those Friars Club roasts and different types of jokes that Milton would tell to him. And one cool thing that happened this season is that Arnold actually came to my stand-up show in Toronto. And that was such a neat moment to have him come support me in that way. And the next day, he sent me a picture of him holding up the pass to my show. And it meant a lot for him to see what I do best, and thats stand-up. Travis Van Winkle as Aldon Reece, Fortune Feimster as Roo Russell in FubarChristos Kalohoridis/NetflixWhen you first read the script for season 2, what got you most excited? Were you pleased with Roos arc?I was excited for the actors that joined us, Carrie-Ann Moss and Guy Burnet. They're both incredible actors and I was pumped that they would elevate us. You know, you bounce off of people like that and they inspire you to bring it a bit more, and I knew that was going to be good for the show. And just seeing the different arcs that our characters had. I did not anticipate my character becoming a boss, that is not something I ever saw in her future, but you know that's what keeps it interesting. For season 3 and beyond, assuming you get renewed, where would you like to see this character go?Listen, we have the best time filming with each other. We get along so well. I think any of us would love to continue if that is in our future. Stories lend themselves to these cliffhangers and there's much more to explore. For my character, I can't foresee her being capable of being a boss for long. I feel like she's gonna do something to mess it up. I would be curious to see what that would be and how it would unfold and I imagine it would be a pretty epic fail whatever it was that she messed up.In that first episode of season 2, you have that seductive dance number with a shirtless Travis Van Winkle. Did you two nail that scene in the first take or what is impossible to not bust up laughing?I love to dance, and it's something I don't get to do often on screen. We had a really awesome choreographer who taught us how to do this. So it was just kind of like nailing the moves first. But then once I got on set and felt comfortable with the dance, adding some more body rolls and getting in Travis's face, it was pretty fun to try to make him break. So we definitely had moments where we weren't taking it too seriously. And then you just want to get the dance right. But it was definitely one of those days where we were giggling a lot. Travis Van Winkle as Aldon Reece, Fortune Feimster as Roo Russell in FubarChristos Kalohoridis/NetflixRoo is known for bringing the most laughs, thanks to you, of course. You have some of the best one-liners in the show. Being that youre a comedian, do you stick to the script closely, or do you sometimes go with your comedic instincts and let loose with those comedic zingers?Nick Santora, our creator, sets up a lot of this stuff and then they just let me run with it. What's nice is that Nick gives us stuff on the page. And that's really fun to bounce off of and we start there. But he knows that I'm a writer and he knows that I'm a comedian. So he's often telling me, You know this, so do what's on the page and then have a ball. So we'll get what he wrote first and then we'll do what they call a fun pass or something like that where they just let me say the most insane things. And some of that stuff makes it in. Some of it is too wild, but I like that. He trusts me enough to give it a shot and to see if there's any way to improve upon or come up with something we hadn't thought about. In season 2, there are a lot of love triangles and romances blooming, but Roo seems to be sitting on the sidelines playing relationship therapist for her team. Being the only LGBTQ+ character in the show, would you like to see a love interest for her?Yeah, why not? You got a peek of it near the end of this season which was just a fun little payoff for her angst at the beginning part of the season. But yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing some growth with her there. She's been kind of a loner and the type of character that's like, I don't need anybody. So it would be nice to see a softer side of her. Maybe it comes through as some sort of romance, who knows, but yeah, that would be fun.The Matrix icon Carrie-Ann Moss is one of the new additions to the cast. If you had some say, what comedy or action stars would you like to see join the FUBAR cast in future seasons? There's so many funny people out there. He's so ridiculous but any chance to work with Will Ferrell. Seeing him as some kind of villain would be pretty cool. But man, there's so many funny comedy people you could just drop in there and see them shine. We mentioned Danny DeVito. I know he has a history with Arnold. You already got Tom Arnold in there, that's one of his buds, so to have Danny come in too, I think fans would really like to see what those two guys would be up to in a show like this. Now that FUBAR has given you a taste of action comedy, do you see yourself maybe playing in this sandbox a little bit more?I'm working on a script. A movie that I've written is an action comedy, and it's inspired me to try to get that made even more. I feel like I know this world so much better now. So to get to create something of my own from the ground up and see it come to life and play another character that's funny but also is doing some action stuff, that would be a dream of mine to get that made.Season 2 of FUBAR is now streaming on Netflix.

Why is Tim Gunn not on 'Project Runway' season 21? Here's what we know
After serving as an iconic mentor for the designers competing in the series, Tim Gunn is officially not coming back for Project Runway season 21 and let's just say that the reasons behind that decision are a little confusing (and kind of messy).Sign up for the Out Newsletter to keep up with what's new in LGBTQ+ culture and entertainment delivered three times a week straight (well) to your inbox!Project Runway will air for the first time on Freeform the Disney-owned cable network previously known as ABC Family along with streaming services like Hulu and Disney+. But even though season 21 is bringing back host Heidi Klum, mainstay judges like Nina Garca, and even a few contestants from past seasons, the new season does not include Tim Gunn. Choices! While some fans assumed that Gunn himself had probably decided not to return for the reality competition series, that doesn't seem to be the case.Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum exchanged messages about coming back for season 21."Heidi sent me a text saying, 'There's talk about bringing Project Runway back with us, with you and me, and would you do it?,'" Gunn told People. "And I said, 'Would I do it? Of course, there's not a moment of hesitation in me."He added, "So Heidi and I were texting and texting, and several months later, she sent me a text asking, 'Are you happy with your contract?' I'm a truth-teller. I don't even mince words. I said, 'Well, I haven't seen a contract.' And she said, 'You haven't?'"Gunn recalled asking his agent to figure out what went wrong. Gunn's agent "contacted the executive producers of this new show, and they said, 'We don't want him.' And [my agent] said, 'Well, he's done 19 seasons of Runway, 16 with Heidi. The two of them won an Emmy together as hosts, and now you're going to separate them?' And they said, 'Yes.'"Tim Gunn was reportedly offered to make a 'small cameo in one episode.'"Several weeks after that conversation, they went back to [my agent] and said, 'Well, we've thought about it, and we'd be willing to offer Tim a small cameo in one episode,'" Gunn explained in the same People interview. "What do I do? Wave from a bus? As the designers are going into Mood [Fabrics]? Heidi comes to see me at the retirement home and we play croquet? So, no, thank you."He continued, "As Heidi would say, you're either in or you're out. And I'm out."Tim Gunn felt 'devastated' and 'disappointed' about not being asked to return.Gunn admitted that he was "initially devastated, then kind of humiliated," upon hearing the news that he wasn't brought back for a new season of Project Runway. And yet, the fashion and reality TV icon is making it work nonetheless."I thought, how lucky am I to have had the experiences that I've had over the last 20 years?" he said. "This is phenomenal. I stopped the boo-hooing. I thought, it's really throwing hubris in the face of an angry God to mourn not being on this new show. So I've come to terms with it."Gunn continued, "Am I disappointed? Sure. And most of all, it's about not working with Heidi. But we move on, and things happen for a reason. I don't know what the reason is yet, but it will be revealed."Heidi Klum told Tim Gunn that she was 'fighting for him' to be cast.It is Gunn's understanding that Klum was also devastated about him not returning to the series. "She was really upset. She kept saying, 'I'm fighting for you, I'm fighting for you.' Which is lovely of her, and nothing that I should expect. And I said, 'Heidi, just take good care of yourself. Don't worry about me. I'll be fine.'"When asked by People if he plans on watching season 21, Gunn was as always a class act.Yes, Gunn is planning to watch the new season. "I have her back and I'm with her in spirit always," he added.Project Runway season 21 premieres on Thursday, July 31 on Freeform, and will also be available for streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
