How Arnold helped FUBAR's Fortune Feimster become an action star
If youve had the pleasure of seeing her laugh-out-loud stand-up shows or Netflix comedy specials like Sweet & Salty and Good Fortune, you know that Fortune Feimster comes armed with an arsenal of good jokes and gut-busting anecdotes. But have you ever seen her armed with a pistol or automatic weapon while taking down some bad guys? If not, you can in the Netflix original series FUBAR where she plays Roo Russell, a wise-cracking CIA agent (and yes, shes gay) with a talent for firing off some highly amusing zingers to her ragtag group of operatives. Those fellow CIA operatives are led by Luke Brunner, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who often leads his team of tight-knit secret agents into high-stakes missions that often end up FUBAR (fucked up beyond all recognition), hence the shows name. Feimster, who is best known for appearing in funny films like Office Christmas Party and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar and television shows like The Mindy Project, officially entered her era as an action-comedy star when FUBAR first debuted on Netflix in 2023. Now, The L Word: Generation Q star is back to once again dabble in this mold-breaking genre and reprise her role as Roo in FUBAR season 2, which premieres on Netflix on June 12. In season 2, Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) and Guy Burnet (Oppenheimer) join the cast as two villains who are plotting a world threat that convinces our lovable group of heroes to come out of hiding and embark on yet another perilous mission.Working side by side with the guy known as The Terminator in explosive action sequences is no small feat, and its a pinch me role Feimster never imagined herself taking on, as she told Out during this exclusive interview. While out promoting FUBAR season 2, the comedian turned action star took some time speak about the unforgettable action-comedy tips she learned from Schwarzenegger, her seductive dance number with the hunky Van Winkle, and whether or not Roo will find a lesbian love interest in the yet-to-be confirmed FUBAR season 3 and beyond. The word legend gets tossed around a lot these days, but Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of those actors who fits the bills. Even though you had already worked with him for an entire season, did you still have those pinch me moments where you can't believe that you're working side by side with The Terminator?Yeah, at this point, he's one of the few world-famous movie stars. There's few people in the world that don't know who he is. We've gotten to know him in such a personal way and have all become friends so going into season 2, I think we felt so comfortable that you at times sort of forget that. You'll then be out in the world with him, like, we would go ride bikes with him or go to dinner and just see how people react to him. You quickly remember that this guy has been a part of so many people's lives for so long, and then you see him doing these big speeches and weighing in on things going on in the world. He's just a very impressive person. He is very a pinch me kind of person to work with. With films like Kindergarten Cop, Arnold is one of those actors who helped write the book on blending action with comedy. You're becoming this action-comedy star now because of FUBAR, so what words of wisdom or memorable advice did he offer you in regards to blending these two genres as an actor?Well, it was certainly a trip to be offered this part because I just did not think anyone would think of me for an action part. So I was really excited to take on the role to just show people that this can look many different kinds of ways as far as delivering action and the type of person who can do it. But, yeah, he was just very, have fun with it. And he would give me little tips, like when shooting the gun, don't blink, and things like that. One of the most memorable action scenes I had with him, in the first season, we were in a cabin, and there were all these explosions going off and debris everywhere. And he and I had to army crawl across this cabin beside each other. And so I'm just thinking in my head, you got to keep up with him. You got to keep up with him. And then when they yelled cut! he looked over at me and said, Now you know what I've been doing for the last 40 years. And I thought, man, this is such a trip.On the flip side, were there any comedic pointers you ever offered to him?He certainly doesn't need my help. Hes so in touch with his own sense of humor and has such a great sense of humor. I loved how much he appreciated comedy. Milton Berle was one of his good friends, and he would tell me stories about those Friars Club roasts and different types of jokes that Milton would tell to him. And one cool thing that happened this season is that Arnold actually came to my stand-up show in Toronto. And that was such a neat moment to have him come support me in that way. And the next day, he sent me a picture of him holding up the pass to my show. And it meant a lot for him to see what I do best, and thats stand-up. Travis Van Winkle as Aldon Reece, Fortune Feimster as Roo Russell in FubarChristos Kalohoridis/NetflixWhen you first read the script for season 2, what got you most excited? Were you pleased with Roos arc?I was excited for the actors that joined us, Carrie-Ann Moss and Guy Burnet. They're both incredible actors and I was pumped that they would elevate us. You know, you bounce off of people like that and they inspire you to bring it a bit more, and I knew that was going to be good for the show. And just seeing the different arcs that our characters had. I did not anticipate my character becoming a boss, that is not something I ever saw in her future, but you know that's what keeps it interesting. For season 3 and beyond, assuming you get renewed, where would you like to see this character go?Listen, we have the best time filming with each other. We get along so well. I think any of us would love to continue if that is in our future. Stories lend themselves to these cliffhangers and there's much more to explore. For my character, I can't foresee her being capable of being a boss for long. I feel like she's gonna do something to mess it up. I would be curious to see what that would be and how it would unfold and I imagine it would be a pretty epic fail whatever it was that she messed up.In that first episode of season 2, you have that seductive dance number with a shirtless Travis Van Winkle. Did you two nail that scene in the first take or what is impossible to not bust up laughing?I love to dance, and it's something I don't get to do often on screen. We had a really awesome choreographer who taught us how to do this. So it was just kind of like nailing the moves first. But then once I got on set and felt comfortable with the dance, adding some more body rolls and getting in Travis's face, it was pretty fun to try to make him break. So we definitely had moments where we weren't taking it too seriously. And then you just want to get the dance right. But it was definitely one of those days where we were giggling a lot. Travis Van Winkle as Aldon Reece, Fortune Feimster as Roo Russell in FubarChristos Kalohoridis/NetflixRoo is known for bringing the most laughs, thanks to you, of course. You have some of the best one-liners in the show. Being that youre a comedian, do you stick to the script closely, or do you sometimes go with your comedic instincts and let loose with those comedic zingers?Nick Santora, our creator, sets up a lot of this stuff and then they just let me run with it. What's nice is that Nick gives us stuff on the page. And that's really fun to bounce off of and we start there. But he knows that I'm a writer and he knows that I'm a comedian. So he's often telling me, You know this, so do what's on the page and then have a ball. So we'll get what he wrote first and then we'll do what they call a fun pass or something like that where they just let me say the most insane things. And some of that stuff makes it in. Some of it is too wild, but I like that. He trusts me enough to give it a shot and to see if there's any way to improve upon or come up with something we hadn't thought about. In season 2, there are a lot of love triangles and romances blooming, but Roo seems to be sitting on the sidelines playing relationship therapist for her team. Being the only LGBTQ+ character in the show, would you like to see a love interest for her?Yeah, why not? You got a peek of it near the end of this season which was just a fun little payoff for her angst at the beginning part of the season. But yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing some growth with her there. She's been kind of a loner and the type of character that's like, I don't need anybody. So it would be nice to see a softer side of her. Maybe it comes through as some sort of romance, who knows, but yeah, that would be fun.The Matrix icon Carrie-Ann Moss is one of the new additions to the cast. If you had some say, what comedy or action stars would you like to see join the FUBAR cast in future seasons? There's so many funny people out there. He's so ridiculous but any chance to work with Will Ferrell. Seeing him as some kind of villain would be pretty cool. But man, there's so many funny comedy people you could just drop in there and see them shine. We mentioned Danny DeVito. I know he has a history with Arnold. You already got Tom Arnold in there, that's one of his buds, so to have Danny come in too, I think fans would really like to see what those two guys would be up to in a show like this. Now that FUBAR has given you a taste of action comedy, do you see yourself maybe playing in this sandbox a little bit more?I'm working on a script. A movie that I've written is an action comedy, and it's inspired me to try to get that made even more. I feel like I know this world so much better now. So to get to create something of my own from the ground up and see it come to life and play another character that's funny but also is doing some action stuff, that would be a dream of mine to get that made.Season 2 of FUBAR is now streaming on Netflix.
