Cops kill conspiracy theorist who shot-up gay-owned pizzeria
Police in Kannapolis, North Carolina, killed 36-year-old Edgar Maddison Welch, the so-called Pizzagate conspiracy theorist who carried a gun into a gay-owned Washington, D.C., pizzeria in 2016 under the belief that the business nonexistent basement was a venue for a child-molestation ring that involved high-ranking Democrats. On January 4, two Kannapolis police officers lethally shot Welch during a traffic stop. One officer pulled Welch over to arrest him for an outstanding warrant for a probation violation. But when the officer opened Welchs car door to apprehend him, Welch allegedly pulled out a handgun from his jacket and pointed it at the officer. When a second officer told Welch to drop his weapon, Welch reportedly didnt comply and was fired upon by both officers. He was hospitalized and died from his wounds two days later, The Guardian reported. Welch entered the restaurant with an assault rifle and customers fled, terrified for their lives. Welch then fired at least one shot to break into a storage closet, looking for a basement where the child sex abuse allegedly took place the restaurant has no basement. After finding no evidence of the child sex trafficking ring, he exited the restaurant and surrendered himself to police waiting outside. He was subsequently sentenced to four years in prison for a federal charge ofinterstate transport of firearms and was required to pay $5,744.33 for damages to the restaurant. Three days before the attack, Welch had tried to convince some of his friends to join in his escapade and break up the pedo ring, showing them a video about the conspiracy theory on YouTube. He reportedly texted one of the friends, Im sorry bro, but Im tired of turning the channel and hoping someone does something and being thankful its not my family. One day it will be our families. The world is too afraid to act and Im too stubborn not to.During his trial, Welch told the court he had acted in a foolish and reckless way, but he maintained that he still believed in other aspects of Pizzagate. Pizzagate, which is a precursor to the QAnon conspiracy theory and other right-wing theories of LGBTQ+ people and their allies grooming and sexualizing children through abuse, began on X (then-Twitter) and right-wing fake news websites, alleging that emails from former U.S. Rep.Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and Clintons then-campaign chair John Podesta. The conspiracy theorists claimed the emails used code words referring to pedophilia andhuman trafficking. In November 2016, a now-deleted post on Reddit claimed that everyone associated with Comet Ping Pong [was] making semi-overt, semi-tongue-in-cheek, and semi-sarcastic inferences towards sex with minors, adding, The artists that work for and with the business also generate nothing but cultish [and Satanic] imagery of disembodiment, blood, beheadings, sex, and of course pizza. The story circulated on anti-LGBTQ+ right-wing websites like Alex Jones InfoWars and was promoted by anti-LGBTQ+ alt-right influencers like Mike Cernovich andJack Posobiec. It has since been promoted by transphobic billionaire and X-owner Elon Musk. In November 2016, Alefantis told The New York Times that his pizzeria and its associated employees had come under constant assault due to the conspiracy theory. Its owners, employees, mural painters, and musicians who had previously played at the restaurant received threats of violence and death. Other conspiracy theorists claimed that children who had been photographed eating at Comet Ping Pong were themselves child sex trafficking victims. Several other nearby pizzerias and businesses also received threats. Pictures of Comet Ping Pongs non-existent basement were, in actuality, just images of other business basements. The business was attacked again on January 25, 2019, when a white man deliberately set a fire in one of its backrooms. However, employees quickly put out the fire, ensuring that no one sustained any injuries. Police arrested the arsonist days later.Pizzagate has been disproven and debunked by numerous fact-checking and news organizations including Snopes, Fox News, and CNN, as well as investigators at theMetropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia.Alefantis called Pizzagate an insanely complicated, made-up, fictional lie-based story and a coordinated political attack. Days after Welchs shooting at the business, Clinton told NPR, The epidemic of malicious fake news and fake propaganda that flooded social media can have real-world consequences.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Donald Trumps love of chaos is a feature of his strategy, not a bug
One of the things that Donald Trump is really good at is chaos. Sometimes its intentional, like his efforts to sow doubts about his loss in the 2020 election. Sometimes, its spontaneous, like when he decided last month that he wanted Congress to repeal the debt ceiling limit, throwing weeks of Congressional negotiations into doubt. And then there are the trademark Trump brain burps and hare-brained schemes. Sometimes these are fleeting flashes from Trumps train of thought, such as the idea that mainlining bleach could kill the COVID virus. Other times, these are hare-brained schemes that Trump fixes on. Related Brian Sims marries his partner early to get it done before Donald Trumps presidency starts There are very treacherous times were going into, and having the protections of the law. The latest example of the latter is Trumps obsession with buying Greenland and invading Panama. (For good measure, Trump said Canada should be part of the U.S., that seemed to just be trolling on Trumps part.) This set off a flurry of media coverage about Trump as a 21st century William McKinley, culminating in a spectacularly silly story in The New York Times about just how much Greenland would cost to buy, the Times equivalent of a Zillow estimate. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today As with all things Trump, the incoming president views these issues through a tiny lens of his own, which is real estate and a 1950s fifth-graders sense of history. Trump doesnt see countries so much as he sees property to be acquired. Instead of acknowledging that Greenland is not for sale and that Trump is just fantasizing, the media spent endless time chasing down the bright shiny object that Trump threw before them. The same is true of the Panama invasion. Trump was asked by a reporter if he would rule out military or economic coercion to acquire either Panama or Greenland, so the idea didnt originate with Trump. In typical Trump fashion, Trump gave a non-answer, along the lines of his many people are saying shtick. No, I cant assure you on either of those two. But I can say this, we need them for economic security, Trump said.Immediately, the headlines blared that Trump wouldnt rule out invading Panama. But Trump probably never had that idea before a reporter raised it. When faced with a direct question, Trump will always be noncommital, which is what happened here. The problem that all the invasion talk highlights is that the media still treat Trump as if he were a normal politician. If a normal politician said what Trump said, it would be a clear signal about policy. For Trump, its just a shoot-from-the-hip response, with no regard to the implications. But youd never know that from the breathless coverage that follows. Instead, there are follow-ups from Trump supporters plastering Trumps comments with fig leaves to make him sound like a policy guru. In fact, Trump probably does think he can buy Greenland just like Jefferson secured the Louisiana Purchase (assuming he knows Jefferson did). Thats because Trump thinks the U.S. can act as it did when it was a much younger nation, by acquiring land. And acquiring land is what the real estate mogul loves, so of course hes going to apply his previous career to his current one. What happens while the media run around talking about Greenlands strategic importance (which for Trump is probably the excuse, not the reason, to acquire more land), is that really important ssues got lost. When was the last time you heard about Project 2025? Or Pete Hegseth? Or Robert Kennedy Jr.? What about mass deportations or tariffs or anti-trans measures? You know, the actual stuff that will happen and change (indeed ruin) peoples lives. This is the brilliance behind Trumps randomness. He knows that he can send the media off on a wild goose chase at a moments notice, changing the narrative. The media think that everything Trump says is news, even when its hogwash, and have to treat it seriously. Under the guidelines that theyve imposed on themselves, they cant acknowledge that a lot of what Trump says is just made up in the moment. Instead, they have to analyze it as if it was a thoughtful statement. The result is that truly serious things that are happening get buried. Trump is a creature of the media. He had a symbiotic relationship with the tabloids, and he learned just what the media need: distractions. Trumps thought processes are just a flood of distractions, creating chaos. Unfortunately, hes found a willing partner in the media.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Mark Zuckerberg orders Meta offices to remove tampons from mens bathrooms
Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly ordered the removal of tampons from mens bathrooms at the Meta offices in Silicon Valley, New York, and Texas. Once available for trans and nonbinary employees who used the mens bathroom, the tampons have been scrapped as part of Zuckerbergs anti-LGBTQ+ policy spree, which appears to be in response to Donald Trumps election victory. Related Black trans lawmaker asks UN to investigate Meta for new hate speech policies Facebook and Instagram will soon explicitly allow homophobia and transphobia. The company also reportedly deleted nonbinary and trans themes from its Messenger app, which until recently had been available for several years.Zuckerberg also recently sat for an interview with the massively popular anti-LGBTQ+ podcaster Joe Rogan, during which he declared companies need more masculine energy and that he is optimistic about Trumps second term because the president-elect just wants America to win. Zuckerberg is also one of several tech CEOs who has donated $1 million to Trumps inaugural fund. According to a report from the New York Times, Zuckerbergs sweeping changes are the result of a series of confidential meetings the CEO planned with a small group of top executives that took place in December. Its a departure from the way policymaking at the company is typically carried out (much more gradually and with input from employees and other leaders). Many employees are angry. One told 404 Media, No one is excited or happy about these changes. And obviously the employees who identify as being part of the LGBTQ+ community are especially unhappy and feel the most unsupported in this. A small number of people are taking time off and are sharing that they are considering leaving the company due to this change.Another one told the same outlet, I find it very hard to understand how explicitly carving out which groups of marginalized people can have what we otherwise classify hate speech directed at them will be beneficial for the communities we hope to build on our platforms.President Joe Biden even called out Zuckerberg for removing fact-checking policies, saying the decision is shameful. Several employees told the Times that Zuckerbergs massive shift is in part to prepare Meta for the Trump era but also that it reflects his personal views and that he no longer wants to keep those views quiet. It seems safe to assume Zuckerberg feels emboldened by the election results to do whatever he wants. Donald Trump takes office next week. What happens next?
On November 6, 2024, LGBTQ+ people woke up to a dark new world.Donald Trump had just been reelected after being the center of one career-ending scandal after another for what felt like every week for almost a decade. His win raised a lot of questions: Why were so many people willing to set aside his obvious lack of qualifications? Did most of America really support the policies that he sold throughout the campaign, like mass deportation and ending transgender peoples rights? How far will he go to enact his less popular policies? How many people would he hurt along the way? How many lives would he harm or end because he cant understand the realities of peoples lives and because of the cruel people he would put in positions of power?Kamala Harris is a fairly normal politician, as well as a charismatic, smart, and driven woman who had a knack for being relatable and who ran a competent but brief campaign that tacked to the center. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today She was widely seen as running for the second term of a president who was, by objective measures, successful. President Joe Biden ended the war in Afghanistan. He gave Ukraine a fighting chance when invaded by Russia without sending American troops. He managed to avoid a recession at the price of brief and fairly mild, by world standards inflation. Unemployment went down and inflation-adjusted wages went up across the economic spectrum. He got several large pieces of legislation passed, including the biggest anti-climate change legislation in history. And, relevant to this publication, his administration was the most pro-LGBTQ+ administration ever. But the twice impeached, convicted felon, admitted rapist, and adjudicated sex abuser whose mental faculties were clearly failing at his advanced age won anyway. More Americans voted for him than did for Harris albeit by a small margin and now we have to prepare for the consequences. Some would throw up their hands and say that the American people deserve to face the consequences of their decision this past November, but those consequences will not be born equally. While all signs point to LGBTQ+ people voting strongly against him, he has promised an even harsher anti-LGBTQ+ administration than the first time around, without even the safeguards of one Democratic congressional chamber to blunt the impact. January marks the launch of LGBTQ Nations first monthly edition. Entitled Only when its dark enough can you see the stars, its focused on questions like these. Questions about how we got here, interrogating what broke in American society, how hatred for our community became a centerpiece of Trumps campaign. Questions about survival, about how LGBTQ+ people can access their rights as government officials take them away, about how to deal with a culture that has become emboldened in its attacks against us. And questions about how to prevent this from happening again in future elections. The cover story of this edition is our yearly Queer State of the Union series, where LGBTQ Nation editors and writers sit down with leaders in activism, politics, and thought to discuss the state of LGBTQ+ rights and what people in the community can expect this year. In the first interview of this series, journalist Nico Lang talked to trans rights activist Sydney Duncan about the wide array of attacks on trans youth that could occur this year.Only when its dark enough can you see the stars is a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jrs Ive Been to the Mountaintop speech, where he discussed how he would answer the question, Which age would you like to live in? if God asked him. He describes a few historical periods but says that his answer would be just a few years in the second half of the 20th century. Now thats a strange statement to make, because the world is all messed up, Dr. King said. The nation is sick. Trouble is in the land; confusion all around. Thats a strange statement. But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough can you see the stars. And I see God working in this period of the twentieth century in a way that men, in some strange way, are responding. Many were reminded of the quote recently when Harris brought it up in her concession speech. I know many people feel that we are entering a dark time, but for the benefit of us all, I hope that is not the case, she said. But heres the thing. America, if it is, let us fill the sky with the light of a billion, brilliant stars, the light of optimism, of faith, of truth, and service. The interview with Duncan will be published shortly. Donald Trump is targeting trans rights. Sydney Duncan is fighting back.
On the evening of the 2024 election, Sydney Duncan was completely blindsided. A longtime LGBTQ+ advocate and attorney, Duncan says she was not expecting neighbor after neighbor to vote the way they did, especially given the stark differences between the two candidates. President-elect Donald Trump, for his part, is the first Commander-in-Chief in American history to have been twice impeached, including over his role in inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in January 2021, and the first to have been convicted of a felony resulting from his time in office. He was found guilty in April 2024 of 34 felonies for falsifying business records to conceal his hush money payments to former adult performer Stormy Daniels.I really, really did not see that coming, Duncan tells LGBTQ Nation of the election returns, which saw Trump becoming the first Republican since 2004 to win both the popular vote and the Electoral College. Im still processing it. Since the election, Ive been pinching myself to try to wake up from this nightmare, but here we are.Among the most difficult aspects of watching Trump retake the White House is knowing that he did so, in part, by vociferously opposing trans rights. During the presidential race, Republicans reportedly spent more than $222 million on advertisements directly targeting the trans community, including TV spots claiming that Democrat Kamala Harris is for they/them. If re-elected, Trump vowed to push for a federal ban on gender-affirming medical care for trans minors and policies restricting the ability of trans student-athletes to play sports in alignment with their lived gender. In what could be a preview of things to come, the House of Representatives recently instituted a bathroom ban targeting incoming freshman Sarah McBride (D-DE), the first out trans woman ever elected to Congress. Related The newest LGBTQ+ members of Congress are fired up & ready to serve The 119th Congress has begun, and three LGBTQ+ freshmen have officially made history. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Duncan, who works as the senior counsel for Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE), says that she has seen firsthand the deleterious impact of anti-trans policy living in Alabama. The state has on the books the nations most onerous trans youth health care ban, which prohibits transition care through the age of 19, and one of its harshest Dont Say Gay laws, which restricts LGBTQ+ education through the end of the eighth grade. She sometimes jokes that her job at A4TE, the nations largest trans advocacy group, is preventing the rest of the country from becoming Alabama, but the remark hardly feels in jest following Trumps win. Were ready in Alabama because were living through it, she says, adding that LGBTQ+ advocacy groups like A4TE have already begun to prepare for what they believe the incoming administration has in store: Things can get worse, and I think we have pretty clear eyes on what thats going to look like, at least initially. Im OK, and I think my community is doing OK, but the kids here are not. They have really taken the brunt of the anti-trans rhetoric. As the LGBTQ+ community looks ahead to four more years of Trump, Duncan spoke with LGBTQ Nation about how advocacy groups like hers are preparing and what keeps them motivated to fight. For Duncan, her north star is the sheer inevitability of trans liberation: This isnt something that you can stop. Its not something that you can just put back in a bottle. A new trans advocacy organization emerges View this post on Instagram A post shared by Advocates for Trans Equality (@transequalitynow)In many ways, A4TE was built for this moment. Launched in June 2023, the nonprofit results from a merger between the nations two largest trans advocacy groups: the National Center for Trans Equality (NCTE) and the Trans Legal Defense and Education Fund (TLDEF). The organization combines TLDEFs decades of legal expertise with the lobbying prowess of NCTE in order to grow and develop trans political power at a time when trans Americans are still jockeying for their seat at the table. A4TEs work combines public education efforts with high-impact litigation to advance trans equality.Less than a year after its founding, A4TE certainly has much work ahead. Duncan says that experts are anticipating that Trump, in the very first days of his term, will issue an executive order prohibiting federal funding for gender-affirming care. Such an order, she adds, is likely to be patterned after the Hyde Amendment, a 1980 law banning public insurers like Medicaid from covering abortion care. Trump may not meet much political opposition should he take such action: A must-pass defense bill recently signed into law by President Joe Biden included a provision blocking the children of active or retired servicemembers from seeking coverage for gender-affirming treatments under TRICARE, the militarys medical plan. It was the first anti-LGBTQ+ bill to be enacted in the U.S. since Dont Ask, Dont Tell in December 1993.It would be devastating, Duncan says of a possible amendment attacking gender-affirming care. It would end health care for a lot of people and remove the ability to get health care by removing it from their employee health plans. Our opponents say that [trans health care] is drive-through medicine and that its easy to access and easy to get. But the reality is, its not. Its sometimes expensive. Its cost-prohibitive to a lot of familiesand a lot of families who rely on resources provided through the government to get these kinds of things. Duncan also fears that Trump will issue a federal order defining gender and sex in a very limited way, similar to proposed regulations floated during his first term in office. Trump has already indicated that he has an appetite for revisiting the policy: On his 2024 campaign website, he called upon Congress to pass a national law stating that the only genders recognized by the U.S. government are male and femaleand they are assigned at birth. Those kinds of efforts will not be exclusive to the federal legislature: Alabama has, in recent sessions, pushed theWhat Is a Woman? Act to define trans people out of existence, and more states are likely to follow in 2025 as anti-trans legislation reaches record levels. Last year, at least 669 bills targeting trans Americans were put forward in 43 states, per the Trans Legislative Tracker website. In looking ahead to the new Trump term, Duncan says that it may be a matter for Republicans to throw everything they can against the wall and see what sticks. All indications are that they are going to take a lot of shots at the trans community, she says. They have both houses of Congress, so were expecting some bad legislation on top of that. We expect a tidal wave. Were going to be slammed. Also keeping A4TE busy is the recent Supreme Court case that will determine the future of trans health care. In U.S. v. Skrmetti, the nations highest judicial body will weigh in on the permissibility of state-level laws limiting the kinds of medical treatments that can be prescribed to trans minors. Currently, 26 states limit doctors from providing best practice medical treatments if the patient is a trans person under the age of 18including Tennessee, the state whose attorney general, Jonathan Skrmetti, is named as the defendant in the suit. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Advocates for Trans Equality (@transequalitynow) If the Supreme Court decides that Tennessee is permitted under the Constitution to limit trans medical care without scrutiny, the ruling could provide a green light for other states that wish to restrict gender-affirming treatments while emboldening any similar efforts at the federal level. Trumps running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), introduced legislation in July 2023 that would jail doctors for up to 12 years for providing transition care to minors.Duncan cautions, however, that even a positive outcome from the Supreme Court doesnt necessarily equate to trans rights for everyone. It would simply mean, she says, that states must operate under heightened scrutiny when passing anti-trans laws: that they are required to demonstrate a rational basis for the legislation rather than acting out of pure animus.Right now, they dont really have to say: Heres our evidence, says Duncan, who attended oral arguments in the case this December on behalf of A4TE. Were still going to face those state laws, but the states will be more burdened to say: Were bringing these laws because of these reasons, and the law is going to do this in concert with that reasoning. Right now, they dont have to do that. Right now, its just: We dont like trans people. Were not going anywhereProtesters demonstrated outside the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 4, 2024, as Justices considered states ability to prevent transgender adolescents from using puberty blockers and hormone therapy. Photo: Megan Smith / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesAlthough early signs indicate that the Supreme Court is likely to uphold Tennessees law targeting trans youth health care, Duncan remains hopeful that a rubber band effect is imminent: that after years of attacks on the very existence of trans people, the momentum will reverse. She believes that what the trans community needs is the kind of pendulum swing that accompanied Ellen DeGeneres 1997 coming out, which helped humanize the everyday experiences of gay and lesbians to an American public that, by and large, widely held negative views of the community. A Gallup poll conducted the prior year indicated that a slim majority of Americans still believed that homosexuality should be illegal. Just 26 percent of respondents in the same poll felt that queer couples should have the right to marry.Thats why representation matters in media and in life, Duncan says, noting the impact of Laverne Coxs 2014 Time magazine cover on her decision to live her life openly as a trans woman. Media is so fragmented right now that I dont know if that same thing is possible for trans people. There needs to be something that happens that draws all eyes to it. If it draws my eye and not my neighbors eye, then its not going to do that. But if it has X factor, that says that these are real people, and this is a real human experience, I think that will cause a shift.Every day, I see people waking up, living their best lives, and refusing to be any other way than the way they are.Sydney Duncan, Advocates for Trans Equality Senior CounselBut while the community awaits its own sea change in public opinion, Duncan maintains that trans people will continue to persist the same way that they always have. Before joining A4TE, she worked for five and a half years as the attorney for Alabamas largest LGBTQ+-led resource provider, Birmingham AIDS Outreach, and Duncan has seentime and againthe state fail to stop people from being trans. After signing the states gender-affirming care ban, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) tweeted in May 2022, If the Good Lord made you a boy, youre a boy. If He made you a girl, youre a girl. Its Alabama common sense. Although these kinds of laws are intended to discourage people from living their truth, Duncan says that shes only gotten louder and more obnoxious in the face of far-right hate.Every day, I see people waking up, living their best lives, and refusing to be any other way than the way they are, says Duncan. I think thats beautiful. I think its so radical and empowering. Watching that gives me hope. Nobodys saying, Ill just give up and go back to the way it was. Theyre saying, Hell no. Amazon removes section on LGBTQ+ rights from its policy page
Amazon has joined the slew of companies rolling back its DEI efforts in apparent celebration of Donald Trumps anti-woke agenda. The changes specifically target LGBTQ+ people, with the section on LGBTQ+ rights being completely removed from its Positions page. The section once emphasized that the company would continue to fight for protection and equal rights rights for transgender people as well as for the passage of the Equality Act. Now, the only mention of LGBTQ+ people on the page is as part of a list of marginalized communities against which the company supposedly does not tolerate inequitable treatment. Related Meta employees speak out against new anti-LGBTQ+ & anti-DEI policies Zuckerbergs policies are part of a growing anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment and a shift away from diversity, equity and inclusion. The page also once stated that Amazon provides gender transition benefits based on the Standards of Care published by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). The removal of this statement has employees worried that they are losing this benefit, but the company told the Washington Post which is owned by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos that it is still available. With these moves, Amazon joins a wave of corporate retailers buckling under pressure from right-wing groups to shed their DEI initiatives, including Walmart, Stanley Black & Decker,Molson Coors,Jack Daniels, Ford Motor Company,John Deere,Lowes Hardware, Target andHarley-Davidson. Earlier this month, McDonalds, the worlds largest fast-food chain, announced it was retiring aspirational representation goals and would pause survey submissions to third-party groups including the Human Rights Campaigns Corporate Equality Index, among other concessions to anti-DEI activists. And in the tech world, Amazons rollbacks are apparently becoming par for the course. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has launched an anti-LGBTQ+ policy spree this month, seemingly emboldened by the election results to do whatever he wants. Zuckerberg, Bezos, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Apple CEO Tim Cook have also all donated $1 million to Donald Trumps inaugural fund. Neil Gaiman accused of sexual abuse again as queer survivor takes a stand & fans have her back
***WARNING: Some of the content in this article deals with sensitive topics of abuse. Please read with caution.New allegations and details about Neil Gaiman's alleged abuse have been revealed. In case you haven't heard, Vulture just dropped a bombshell expos on Gaiman titled "There Is No Safe Word," which describes, in shocking detail, the allegations from eight women who detail his sexual assault, coercion, and abuse. It also implicated his ex-wife Amanda Palmer in some degree of complicity with his alleged crimes. The piece, written by Lila Shapiro, who also gave us an in-depth look into Joss Whedon a few years ago, highlights the chilling dissonance between Gaiman's public persona as a feminist and the shared stories by his accusers. Among them is perhaps most notably Scarlett Pavlovich, a 22-year-old gay woman who worked as a nanny for Gaiman and Palmer.I wrote about Neil Gaiman, and the women accusing him of sexual coercion, assault and abuse. www.vulture.com/article/neil...[image or embed] lila pearl (@lilashapiro.bsky.social) January 13, 2025 at 4:20 AMThis is also not the first time Pavlovich has said anything. In the Vulture piece, Pavlovich describes an unsettling power dynamic and alleged assaults, recalling one incident where Gaiman joined her in a garden bathtub despite her discomfort. I said no. He said, Dont ruin the moment, she told Shapiro, adding that what followed left her feeling a subtle terror. Pavlovichs story adds another harrowing pain point as she noted, Im gay. Id never had sex [with a man].Elsewhere, Pavlovich recalled Gaiman telling her that Palmer told him he "couldn't have" her, which only fueled his desires. According to Pavlovich, she said Gaiman wished "it were the gold old days we we could both [he and Palmer] f**k you."Seven of the eight accusers in the article emphasize that they had no interest in BDSM, a culture Gaimans representatives claim he engaged in consensually. However, as Shapiro points out, If just one party consents, then its not BDSM but abuse.Despite the gravity of these claims, Gaimans career remains largely intact, for now, and major projects with Netflix and Amazon Prime are still currently slated for later this year. LA wildfires just made this lesbian bar close for good. The city only has 1 left.
The devastating fires in Los Angeles, California have claimed 24 lives in a week of destruction wrought across the vast metropolis. On Sunday, a beloved lesbian bar in the Silver Lake neighborhood announced it was another victim of the unprecedented natural and urban disaster.Owners of The Ruby Fruit, a tiny and popular wine bar and restaurant serving the sapphically inclined, said on Instagram, We have come to the heartbreaking decision that at this time, operating The Ruby Fruit is no longer possible due to financial impact from the current natural disaster. Related Conservatives blame LA wildfires on fire chief being gay They dont know what she did, but her being gay, they say, proves that she was a diversity hire. The community gathering spot opened in a small strip mall on Sunset Boulevard in 2023, a rare addition to the declining number of lesbian bars in the United States. At the time, it was the only bar dedicated to LGBTQ+ women in Los Angeles.Honeysat Star Love in East Hollywood opened soon after. Subscribe to our Newsletter today In 1980, there were 200+ lesbian bars in the U.S. By 2021, that number dwindled down to 24, according to The Lesbian Bar Project. A small resurgence in the last few years included The Ruby Fruit. The name of the bar, created by co-owners Emily Bielagus and Mara Herbkersman, was an homage to Rita Mae Browns 1973 coming-of-age lesbian novel The Rubyfruit Jungle. The devastation felt within our small community, as well as the unfathomable destruction that continues day after day, is truly beyond comprehension, the co-owners wrote. Sadly, along with all the feelings of grief and shock that we have experienced over the last few days, also came this undeniable reality: that running our small business is no longer sustainable. The hospitality industry functions on a day-by-day basis and right now, as they say the math just isnt mathing. View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Ruby Fruit (@therubyfruit)At just 500 square feet, The Ruby Fruit had a small footprint, but the bar held outsized influence among its community in its short run. Conde Nast Traveler called its mutable energy unique among similar institutions, with the owners focused on community and a brand of hospitality devoted to every customer. After we opened The Ruby Fruit, we quickly learned that we had to function as not just a restaurant but a community space, Herbkersman told the magazine. The queer community is full of diversity and nuance. We want to create a little bit of space for everyone to feel at home.We try to talk to everyone, Herbkersman said. The Ruby Fruit is so small that you actually can do that. The spot was host to TRANScendent Tuesdays, a gender-expansive mixer, along with other regular programming like Queereoke and queer open mic Verse4Verse Poetry.Crowds often spilled out into the parking lot lining the small mall. For now, Bielagus and Herbkersman are using the space as a donation drop-off and distribution center for victims of the fires.Even as we write this, we have folks filling their cars and driving supplies to area shelters and resource centers. The U.K. is finally restoring honor to veterans harmed by its anti-LGBTQ+ military ban
The United Kingdom has announced its plans to build a memorial for LGBTQ+ veterans who were persecuted and discharged under the countrys ban on queer military members, which remained in place from 1967 to 2000. The bronze memorial will resemble a crumpled sheet of paper and contain phrases from LGBTQ+ people affected by the ban. The announcement of the monument follows a government pledge to give 70,000 ($85,159) to military members harmed by the ban.The memorial whose design was chosen from 38 submissions and five finalists will be constructed at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, a county about 145 miles northwest of London, just north of Birmingham. It will include phrases collected from LGBTQ+ soldiers during a recent investigation into the policy spearheaded by Terence Etherton, a member of Britains House of Lords. Related Another trans military ban would cost the United States billions of dollars And that could be the least of the problems caused. The phrases include ones like A battle for love, a place to belong, and together we stand. Though most of the letters will be gray in color, some individual words like respect, strength, and pride will be highlighted in gold. Its construction is being overseen by the LGBTQ+ military charity Fighting With Pride, The Hereford Times reported. The trustees are delighted that we have such a strong winner for the LGBT+ armed forces community memorial, said Ed Hall, chairman of Fighting With Pride. Its been incredibly important to all of us at Fighting With Pride that we held a rigorous creative process to find the right design that will provide a place of peace and reflection for the LGBT+ armed forces family. 25 years after a ban on LGBT people serving in the military was lifted, a new monument is unveiled. Campaigned for by @fightingwpride & designed by Abraxas Academy, the design represents a crumpled letter, made up of words taken from evidence to the Lord Etherton report. pic.twitter.com/dMj6lRYU5V Chamber UK (@ChamberVoice) January 12, 2025The lasting harm of the UKs anti-LGBTQ+ military banWhile the U.K. decriminalized same-sex encounters in 1967, it erected a ban on military members under the pretense that queer service members harmed morale and threatened preparedness. The ban, which affected hundreds of thousands of military members, resulted in military members facing intimidation, blackmail, discrimination and harassment, the seizure of personal letters and photos, intense psychological interrogations, invasive medical examinations that sometimes involved sexual assault, forced resignations and outings to family members, dishonorable discharges, prison time, alienation from military supports and benefits, and even suicides over the shame, isolation and poverty that resulted from all of the above.Several military members discharged under the ban told researchers that the policy, Made me [feel] embarrassed of my own sexuality. Made me feel a lesser person, one who was open to abuse and ridicule. Some LGBTQ+ military members told the BBC that staying closeted felt like a self-betrayal and that they hid their same-sex relationships, often censoring themselves in private letters and referring to their partners in public by names often used by members of the opposite sex. Another said the policy made them feel lonely, dirty, outcast, and left them severely gay bashed threatened, robbed, deprived, imprisoned, mind games, loss of confidence, removed the joy of sex, self-hate, made to feel ashamed of being me, nervous. It took away my career, it took away my pension, it took away my future, yet another said. It just, it just utterly destroyed it, and it took away a job I know I was good at it just took away my home, my livelihood, my future, career, pension. It doesnt really get much worse than that, does it?Finally, some justice nearly 25 years after the bans repealA group of ousted LGBTQ+ veterans and allies eventually formed an activist group called the Rank Outsiders. Together, along with other U.K. LGBTQ+ groups like Stonewall, successfully raised public awareness about the bans inherent unfairness and pressured the MoD to repeal the ban in 2000.In July 2023, then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, apologized on behalf of the nation for the ban. In December 2024, the government said that veterans who were discharged and negatively affected by the ban could receive up to 70,000 ($85,159) as compensation. Veterans can also apply to have their rank restored and discharge reasons amended.Lt. Cdr. Duncan Lustig-Prean, who was blackmailed for his homosexuality and discharged under the ban, told the BBC that seeing the monument will be an intensely emotional experience not just because we never expected to get this far, but also because for anyone who serves, remembrance of those who gave their lives is profoundly important to us.Thats one of the reasons why I really want to go and see that memorial and contemplate the LGBTQ people who died for this country, as well as those who gave their careers because of this policy, he added.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Is discovering your partner owns Trump media stock a relationship dealbreaker? Lesbians weigh in
With Inauguration Day around the corner, many LGBTQ+ people are dreading watching politicians who want to roll back our rights take control of the government. But one redditor was stunned to discover her girlfriend felt differently all because of money.u/ExcellentComment5507 turned to the actuallesbians subreddit for advice after learning her girlfriend had previously purchased stocks in Donald Trump's media company."She's owned them for a while now but I only found out today," she wrote. "She mentioned how excited she is for January 20th for that reason because it will do well for her stock."It was clearly a shock, as she notes the two have known each other since high school, been dating for a year, and she considers her girlfriend "genuinely such a good person, and a liberal.""I love her more than anything but this feels wrong. Am I being overdramatic?" she asked. The title of the post indicated that she wanted to know if this should be a dealbreaker for the relationship, and it sparked some interesting debate surrounding what, precisely, was the problem here.Several of her fellow redditors admitted they didn't see a problem with LGBTQ+ people finding a way to profit from something that is otherwise likely to cause problems. from actuallesbians from actuallesbians from actuallesbiansBut others pointed out there's often a difference between profiting where you can in this sort of system and actively investing in something that benefits Trump and/or his political allies. from actuallesbians from actuallesbiansUltimately, the majority of responses centered around concern that the original poster's girlfriend was actively "excited" for Trump's inauguration just so she could make a little cash. from actuallesbians from actuallesbians from actuallesbians from actuallesbiansAnd one redditor who managed to step back from the understandably high emotions so many are feeling leading up to January 20th and make a pretty decent point."I think it would be a deal breaker for me," wrote u/Purple_Bowling_Shoes, "because it's not intelligent. No one has ever invested in trump and made a profit."

Donald Trumps niece calls him out for attacking enemies instead of helping during the LA fires
Donald Trumps niece clinical psychologist Mary Trump is calling out his behavior during the Los Angeles wildfires, which she says is a harbinger of how he will handle crises as president. There are currently an estimated 24 people who are either dead or missing and over 12,000 structures have been damaged so far, with over 150,000 more people still under evacuation orders. Related Donald Trumps lesbian niece calls him out: No idea what hes talking about She said her uncle is deeply ignorant since he didnt know the Constitution prohibits one of his biggest campaign promises. The fires have also become the subject of massive misinformation, which Trump is only contributing to. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Late last week, Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way. Donald Trump also referred to Newsom as Newscum in that post. There was no water restoration declaration. It was just made up to put blame on Newsom.Mary Trump wrote on her Substack that her uncle should be rallying support and taking action to aid his fellow Americans instead of spreading false information to attack his perceived political enemies and stoke division. She said this is a sign of things to come during his second administration. Weve seen the real world consequences of what happens when Donald is in charge during a crisis, Mary Trump wrote. Hes withheld disaster aid from states whose governors didnt pay him sufficient [deferential respect]; hes diverted resources away from first responders; hes repeatedly failed communities in crisis, and hes often made recommendations based on pseudo-science that have made everything worse. What we can expect, because weve seen time and time again: If you need help in a crisis, but you do not kiss Donalds ass sufficiently, he will not help you. He will use the crisis to perpetuate misinformation and conspiracy theories which will lead to a greater loss of life. He will blame the victims. He will divide us against each other. That is the playbook, she added. She listed numerous disasters that occurred during her uncles first term, including Hurricane Maria and the COVID-19 pandemic, both of which she said he didnt adequately respond to and showed his jaw-dropping lack of empathy.Mary Trump then accused her uncle of sowing discord because it wears down his opposition. I do know what Donald gets out of stirring up chaos and division during those times when we need unity, she wrote. Division benefits him, even if, or maybe especially if its at the expense of the rest of us. Division wears us down, even as it leaves him unaltered. I actually think it energizes him.We know whats coming and we know how to combat whats headed our way: stick togetherdont let anybody tell you that the best way for you to survive in a crisis is to stop caring about other people.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Amazon removes 'equity for Black people' and 'LGBTQ+ rights' from company policies
Amazon has quietly removed several policies from its public websites aimed at protecting workers, including "solidarity" pledges with its Black employees and health care benefits for transgender workers. The pages were removed about a month ago, according to The Washington Post. The changes include several to policy, as well as department titles. A section previously called Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is now Inclusive Experiences and Technology, and the section advance DEI through technology is now a pledge to advance the employee experience. One of the removed policies includes an outline of the gender-affirming care benefits provided to employees under Amazon's health care plan, which it said were "based on the Standards of Care published by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). Also removed was the company's pledge that it is working at the U.S. federal and state level on legislation that would provide anti-discrimination protections for transgender people.Though Amazon previously stated that it stood "in solidarity" with its Black employees, the company also removed that section, as well as one claiming to support legislation to combat misconduct and racial bias in policing, efforts to protect and expand voting rights, and initiatives that provide better health and educational outcomes for Black people.Spokesperson Kelly Nantel confirmed to the outlet that the company update[s] this page from time to time to ensure that it reflects updates weve made to various programs and positions.Several major U.S. businesses have announced they would be ending their diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in the past year, including Ford Motor Company, Harley-Davidson, Lowe's, and Tractor Supply among others. The decisions came after pressure from conservative extremists online, including failed filmmaker turned failed congressional candidate Robby Starbuck, who has taken credit for the companies' decisions. However, experts believe that Starbuck's pressure alone does not explain the shift.Meta recently announced the end of its DEI programs almost immediately after announcing new content rules that allow users to abuse LGBTQ+ people, citing the shifting "legal and policy landscape surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in the United States." McDonald's also cited Supreme Court decision against affirmative action in its decision to end DEI programs the, as well as changes among "other companies."

Beloved Lesbian Bar in Los Angeles Closes Due to Wildfire Impact Leaving Only One Left in Major City
The devastating wildfires sweeping across Los Angeles have claimed 24 lives in just a week, leaving a trail of destruction that has impacted homes, businesses, and communities throughout the city. Among the casualties is The Ruby Fruit, a beloved lesbian bar in the Silver Lake neighborhood that had served as a vital gathering spot for the LGBTQ+ community. On Sunday, the bars owners, Emily Bielagus and Mara Herbkersman, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram that The Ruby Fruit would be closing its doors due to the financial strain caused by the ongoing disaster. We have come to the heartbreaking decision that at this time, operating The Ruby Fruit is no longer possible due to financial impact from the current natural disaster, the post read.A Rare Sanctuary for LGBTQ+ WomenOpened in 2023, The Ruby Fruit was a rare addition to the shrinking number of lesbian bars across the United States. Located in a small strip mall on Sunset Boulevard, the bar became a vital hub for LGBTQ+ women in Los Angeles. At the time of its opening, it was the only bar dedicated to lesbian women in the city, a distinction that was later shared by Honeys at Star Love in East Hollywood. In a country where lesbian bars have become increasingly rare, the closure of The Ruby Fruit marks a significant loss for the LGBTQ+ community. According to The Lesbian Bar Project, the number of lesbian bars in the U.S. dropped from over 200 in 1980 to just 24 by 2021. Despite these challenges, a small resurgence in recent years had breathed new life into establishments like The Ruby Fruit, which quickly garnered a loyal following. The bars name was inspired by Rita Mae Browns 1973 novel Rubyfruit Jungle, a groundbreaking coming-of-age story about a lesbian womans journey to self-acceptance. For co-owners Bielagus and Herbkersman, the name was a tribute to the books legacy and its role in queer literary history.A Space for CommunityThough only 500 square feet, The Ruby Fruit had an outsized impact on the local LGBTQ+ scene. The bars intimate setting allowed it to function not only as a bar but also as a community space where queer individuals could feel seen and supported. In an interview with Cond Nast Traveler, Herbkersman described how the space evolved beyond a restaurant, becoming a hub for connection and inclusion. After we opened The Ruby Fruit, we quickly learned that we had to function as not just a restaurant but a community space, Herbkersman said. The queer community is full of diversity and nuance. We want to create a little bit of space for everyone to feel at home.View this post on InstagramA post shared by The Ruby Fruit (@therubyfruit)The bar hosted a variety of regular programming, including TRANScendent Tuesdays, a gender-expansive mixer, and other popular events like Queereoke and Verse4Verse Poetry, a queer open mic night. These events brought together a diverse range of people from across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support. On many nights, the bars small space would overflow into the parking lot, a testament to its popularity and the strong sense of community it had cultivated.Wildfires Devastate Los AngelesThe ongoing wildfires have affected many businesses and residents across Los Angeles, but the impact on The Ruby Fruit was particularly devastating. Bielagus and Herbkersman explained that the financial realities of operating the business in the aftermath of the fires made it impossible to continue. The hospitality industry functions on a day-by-day basis and right now, as they say the math just isnt mathing, the co-owners wrote in their farewell post.Despite the bars closure, Bielagus and Herbkersman are still using the space to give back to the community. They have transformed The Ruby Fruit into a donation drop-off and distribution center for victims of the wildfires. Even as we write this, we have folks filling their cars and driving supplies to area shelters and resource centers, the post continued. Please keep an eye on this Instagram account for more information regarding that.In the wake of the closure, both owners expressed their gratitude for the support they received over the past two years. There isnt much more to say beyond: we love you, LA. We love you, queer fam. We are grateful for the support youve shown us, they wrote. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.A Loss for the Queer CommunityThe loss of The Ruby Fruit is a particularly painful blow to the LGBTQ+ community in Los Angeles, a city that has long been seen as a haven for queer individuals seeking support and acceptance. The bars closure highlights the broader struggles faced by many small businesses in the hospitality industry, especially those serving marginalized communities. For many, The Ruby Fruit was more than just a place to grab a drink; it was a safe haven where queer individuals could be themselves without fear of judgment. Its closure underscores the devastating toll the wildfires have taken on the city and the fragility of spaces that serve as essential cultural and social resources for vulnerable populations. As Los Angeles continues to grapple with the aftermath of the fires, the legacy of The Ruby Fruit will live on in the memories of those whose lives were touched by the bars unique spirit and its commitment to building a welcoming, inclusive community. The post Beloved Lesbian Bar in Los Angeles Closes Due to Wildfire Impact Leaving Only One Left in Major City appeared first on Gayety.

Lawyer Calls for Hate Crime Charge After Black Transgender Student Stabbed in Houston
A lawyer representing an 18-year-old Black transgender high school student who was stabbed in a violent attack on a METRO bus in Houston is demanding that the suspect be charged with a hate crime. The victim, identified only by her first name, Rue, was attacked on December 22, 2024, as she got off the bus in broad daylight.According to local reports, Rue was approached by a man, later identified as 26-year-old Joseph Fuerborn, who asked to use her phone to make a call. Rue agreed, but when she asked for the phone back, Fuerborn reportedly refused and became violent. He allegedly stabbed Rue three times, puncturing her lung, before fleeing the scene.Assailant Arrested, Charges PendingFuerborn was quickly apprehended by law enforcement, with the knife used in the attack still in his possession. He has been charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, a charge linked to another armed robbery he was allegedly involved in. Despite these charges, Rues attorney, Kevin Murray, is pushing for Fuerborns charges to be upgraded to include a hate crime. She didnt do anything to provoke this attack, Murray said. This was an unprovoked assault that appears to be rooted in transphobia. We believe this should be considered a hate crime. While the suspect is in custody, the decision on whether to pursue hate crime charges will ultimately be made by the office of Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare.Victim Speaks OutRue, who has dreams of becoming a fashion designer, spoke publicly for the first time on January 3, 2025, outside the Harris County Criminal Courts Building. She recounted her terrifying ordeal, revealing how she feared for her life during the attack.I thought I was going to become one of those like my worst fears ever come true, Rue said. I thought my life was going to end before I even got to start it.Rue spent the holiday season recovering in the hospital from her injuries, which included a punctured lung. She continues to undergo medical treatment, but she says the emotional toll of the attack is significant. Despite this, Rue expressed her desire to stay involved in the community and advocate for trans rights going forward.I just hope to be more safe, Rue added in an interview with KHOU. I want people to know that we arent here to harm anyone, and I just want people to stop harming us.Concerns Over Rising Violence Against Transgender PeopleThe incident has brought renewed attention to the alarming trend of violence against transgender individuals, particularly Black trans women. Local LGBTQ+ advocates, including representatives from the Houston LGBTQ+ Political Caucus, have condemned the attack and called for stronger protections for the trans community. At the heart of this incident is a broader, more dangerous issue: the rising violence against transgender people, said Austin Ruiz, a spokesperson for the Houston LGBTQ+ Political Caucus. We cannot ignore that Black trans women are particularly at risk, and incidents like this are a painful reminder of the need for stronger protections and greater awareness.Data compiled by the Transgender Law Center shows that Black trans women are disproportionately affected by violence. In Texas, 57% of all reported victims of fatal anti-trans violence between 2017 and 2020 were Black, a statistic that highlights the ongoing danger faced by this community. The Human Rights Campaigns 2024 report on violence against transgender and gender-expansive individuals declared a national state of emergency due to the rising rates of violence. Texas, in particular, has been identified as the state with the highest number of incidents of fatal anti-trans violence in the U.S., partly due to the states contentious anti-LGBTQ+ laws. The report also noted that Black trans women make up more than 60% of all victims of fatal anti-trans violence across the country since 2013.Ongoing Advocacy and SupportIn response to the attack, local advocates and activists have organized rallies and events to raise awareness about the violence faced by transgender people. Rue herself attended a rally on January 4, where she called for more safety measures and urged the community to support trans individuals rather than attack them.I hope to be more involved in the fight for trans rights, Rue said at the rally. We need to stand up for ourselves and make sure people know we have a right to live without fear. While Rues recovery continues, her experience has galvanized local support for stronger protections and greater public education on the issues facing the transgender community. We gays love Grindr but here's whyI still refuse to use it
If you're queer, you've probably already very familiar with the infamous dating app Grindr. (If you haven't, you truly live in your own world and, no sarcasm, I'm so envious and in serious awe.) It's the app that has veritably swept a nation of queer folks and made dating and hooking up convenient for tons of bored, horny gays on the go. All joking aside, people use it for lots of different reasons and I respect that...but I still choose not to use it myself. If your immediate response is "Who cares?" that's totally fine, because you probably don't have to care about what I have to say anyway. If you love the app and were looking for a hate read, sorry to break it to you, but I'm also not trying to judge people who peruse Grindr on the regular. What I'm really trying to do is make space for people who don't use Grindr to discuss the issues and triggers the app presents them with. Grindr (and countless other online dating/hook-up services) has become such a cultural norm among modern gays, but there are still many people who are still not using it. And I'm one of them.Let's explore some of the reasons why Grindr is just not a thing in my life. You just might relate.1. The app can be incredibly homonormativeThe first time I downloaded Grindr, I was super excited to get to see other available gay people around me. I was still in the community-forming stage at that point and was just giddy at the idea of having other people I could be gay with. What I found when I downloaded the app hit me deeply.NO FEMMESNO FATSNO POCSI was shocked to see such blatant and widespread prejudice in the preferences of the men around me (in the Philadelphia area). It was as if people were "shopping" for people as opposed to trying to get to know them. In the past I've had my own struggles with homonormativity, preferring masculine men to feminine ones, but I learned that attraction is moral and political. For one, if you set such preferences, you give other people the right to do the same. If you don't want to date someone of color, you give white people and people of color the complete, justifiable right to deny you based on the color of your skin. The simple fact is, when you declare yourself not attracted to a type of person, you are promoting prejudice, which is nothing more than the act of judging a person or group of people before you know them. Unless you know every POC person on the planet, you can't logically say you're not attracted to any of them. While Grindr officially removed ethnicity filters from the app in 2020, this system of hierarchies and societal trends in its users turned me off me from Grindr immediately. What I wanted from Grindr was a sense of community, but what I found was a lot of people seeking hookups like they were ordering food off of a menu. It wasn't for me.2. Where's the romance?I'm not saying you can't find love on Grindr (anything is possible, right?). I'm also not saying the majority of people who use the app are looking for serious relationships. I'm a very romantic person and found that the speed with which conversations moved on Grindr was far too fast. I'd feel like I barely knew someone before they were inviting me out to dinner or to their house. It threw me for a loop. There's no shame in moving quickly. Some people move faster than others, and that's okay. Again, it just wasn't for me. I prefer the tension that IRL conversations create; the kind that makes you think before you speak and makes you awkward. I feel like people are more themselves in person because on an app, people have time to say the things they think people want to hear. People can create the personas they wish to be and avoid the very real parts of themselves that they think people won't like.3. Men can be very scaryI'm petite. Most adult men weigh more than me. People can say whatever they want online. People can use and send pictures that aren't their own. I know I sound like a paranoid mess with a superiority-complex, but the reality is that I have one life and I'd rather not risk it for a stranger I met through an app. It's true that you never know what people are like even if you know them in real life, but it's also true that rape and sexual violence can (and does) happen to gay men too. It can happen to anyone. I know it's a stretch and that people will say there's always risks in life, and because that's true I try not to take unnecessary risks. I'm sure there are plenty of safe and kind people on Grindr, but I'm too worried to take a chance to find out. I don't have the trust level or confidence required to really enjoy the app. Maybe that's my loss.4. Sex isn't really all that important to meI'm team sex positivity. I think if people want to bang on the table, in a church, on the stairs, in a park, or however, wherever they want, that's fine. No one has a right to tell people what to do with their body as long as all parties involved are consenting and safe. For some people, though, sex just isn't worth all the time and effort. I'm one of those people. Maybe my hormones never kicked in.

What is RedNote and is this TikTok alternate a good choice for LGBTQ+ people?
With a TikTok ban impending, many users are turning to RedNote as an alternative but it might not be everything they're seeking. Here's all you should know about the platform before diving in. What is RedNote? RedNote is a short-form video platform that doubles as an e-commerce site, offering shopping and the ability to leave reviews on products. It is the alternative to TikTok in China, where it is known as Xiaohongshu, which translates to "little red book." RedNote recently became the number one app in U.S. stores online ahead of the impending ban. Because the company is based in China, the platform could eventually be subject to a similar ban as TikTok's.What content is allowed on RedNote?TikTok refugees have already noted harsh restrictions on RedNote that have resulted in their content being removed or their accounts being suspended, including for mentioning LGBTQ+ identities or for women, wearing a slightly low-cut top. One TikTok user returned to the platform to share that she had bee banned from RedNote after posting a selfie with "a tiny bit of cleavage," and a separate video mentioning "trans plight." A Black user asked for help online after her selfie was removed all for wearing a shirt in the same tone as her skin. Why is TikTok being banned? The U.S. Supreme Court recently heard legal challenges to a law that requires ByteDance, TikToks China-based parent company, to sell the app or face a nationwide ban. Passed in Congress with bipartisan support and signed by President Joe Biden, the law requires ByteDance, TikToks China-based parent company, to sell the app or face a nationwide ban. Unless the Supreme Court delays or overturns the ban, ByteDance has said it will start the process of shutting down TikToks U.S. operations on Jan. 19. Lawmakers have argued that the app poses national security risks because of its foreign ownership, despite the First Amendment concerns a ban creates. Is TikTok really a national security threat? While lawmakers have claimed they cannot release much of their evidence proving TikTok's threat to security due to it being classified, experts say that the app isn't any more invasive than other social media platforms. A 2021 study by the University of Torontos Citizen Lab found that TikTok's data harvesting is nearly identical to that of Facebook or Instagram's, and an investigation into the app by the C.I.A. found no concrete evidence of Chinese authorities using users' data, according to The New York Times. Can TikTok be used after the ban? While TikTok could theoretically remain operational on personal devices that have already downloaded the app after it is removed from stores on Jan. 19, it will not be able to continue indefinitely without updates, which ByteDance will no longer be able to deploy. To prevent issues, TikTok has suggested that it will begin shutting down operations in the U.S. once the ban takes effect.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Allegedly Orders Removal of Tampons from Mens Bathrooms in Controversial Policy Shift
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly ordered the removal of tampons from mens bathrooms across the companys offices in Silicon Valley, New York, and Texas. The move, which affects restrooms previously equipped with tampons for trans and nonbinary employees, is part of a broader series of policy changes at the company that critics say signal a shift toward more anti-LGBTQ+ stances.According to sources familiar with the decision, the removal of tampons is one of several actions in a sweeping series of changes that Zuckerberg has implemented in recent months. These changes, which some argue reflect a more conservative approach, have sparked outrage among employees and LGBTQ+ advocates.A Shift in Metas PoliciesThe tampon removal follows other controversial policy changes at Meta, including the companys decision to loosen its hate speech policies. Last week, Zuckerberg announced that the company would reduce its reliance on content moderators and fact-checkers, a move that will allow more controversial content to remain on its platforms. This includes content that may promote harmful rhetoric about LGBTQ+ individuals, such as referring to them as mentally ill.Meta also recently ended its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices in hiring, training, and supplier selection. These policies, which had been a key component of the companys commitment to inclusivity, are now being rolled back. Additionally, Zuckerberg has reportedly authorized the deletion of nonbinary and transgender themes from Metas Messenger app, which had previously been available for several years.Zuckerbergs Comments Fuel BacklashZuckerbergs recent actions appear to be part of a broader strategy to align the company with more conservative viewpoints, a shift that some believe is connected to the rise of Donald Trumps political influence. In a recent interview with popular anti-LGBTQ+ podcaster Joe Rogan, Zuckerberg praised what he called masculine energy in business, while expressing optimism about Trumps second term. Zuckerberg, a major political donor, is one of several tech CEOs who contributed $1 million to Trumps inaugural fund. The CEOs public remarks have fueled speculation that his decisions at Meta are increasingly influenced by his personal views, as well as a desire to align the company with the political climate that has gained momentum under Trumps influence. In December, Zuckerberg convened a series of confidential meetings with top executives to discuss these changes, a departure from the companys traditional decision-making process, which typically involves broader input from employees and leadership.Employee Reactions: Anger and DisillusionmentThe policy changes have been met with widespread anger from Metas workforce, particularly among employees who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. One employee told 404 Media, No one is excited or happy about these changes. And obviously, the employees who identify as being part of the LGBTQ+ community are especially unhappy and feel the most unsupported in this. A small number of people are taking time off and are sharing that they are considering leaving the company due to this change.Another Meta employee expressed frustration with the direction the company is taking, saying, I find it very hard to understand how explicitly carving out which groups of marginalized people can have hate speech directed at them will be beneficial for the communities we hope to build on our platforms.Widespread Criticism from LGBTQ+ Groups and Public FiguresThe changes have drawn sharp criticism from LGBTQ+ rights organizations and public figures, including President Joe Biden. Biden recently condemned Metas decision to remove fact-checking policies and loosen its hate speech guidelines, calling it shameful and expressing concern over the potential harm these changes could cause to marginalized communities.LGBTQ+ advocates have voiced particular concern about the tampon removal, arguing that it is part of a broader pattern of erasing support for trans and nonbinary individuals. Its a clear message that the company no longer values the needs and rights of LGBTQ+ employees, said one advocate, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.Zuckerbergs Political and Personal Views at the ForefrontSeveral reports suggest that Zuckerbergs policy changes are not just a response to shifting political dynamics in the U.S., but also a reflection of his personal views. Sources close to the company say that Zuckerberg, emboldened by Trumps political success, is now more openly expressing his conservative leanings. One insider stated, He no longer wants to keep those views quiet, and he is pushing Meta to reflect that. The companys pivot is seen as a direct response to what Zuckerberg perceives as a growing conservative movement in the United States, one that values traditional, masculine business practices and rejects what some view as the excesses of the previous eras focus on diversity and inclusion.Impact on Metas Reputation and FutureAs Meta continues to roll out these controversial changes, the companys reputation among its diverse employee base and the general public is being tested. Many employees fear that the companys shift toward more conservative values will undermine the inclusivity that has been central to Metas image, especially among younger and more progressive demographics. The removal of tampons from mens bathrooms, in particular, has ignited conversations about the importance of maintaining inclusive policies that recognize the needs of transgender and nonbinary individuals. Critics argue that such moves could alienate a significant portion of the LGBTQ+ community and damage Metas standing as a tech leader committed to social progress. While Zuckerbergs decisions have sparked significant backlash, the CEO appears undeterred, confident that his approach will help position Meta for success in an increasingly polarized political climate. Whether this shift will pay off in the long run remains to be seen, as Meta navigates the complexities of balancing corporate values with the demands of an evolving social and political landscape. The post Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Allegedly Orders Removal of Tampons from Mens Bathrooms in Controversial Policy Shift appeared first on Gayety.

Supreme Court takes up case claiming Obamacare promotes homosexual behavior
The Supreme Court on Friday announced it will take up a case that imperils a core tenet of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) preventative care. This tenet requires insurance providers to cover pre-exposure prophylactics (PrEP), medications that can greatly reduce HIV transmission, as well as potentially hundreds of other preventive services, among them cancer screenings and heart statins. The case was originally brought by a group of individuals and a Texas business, Braidwood Management, who sued over the mandates because the company had moral objections to covering PrEP and screenings for sexually transmitted diseases and other treatments that they believe promote homosexual behavior. Related Donald Trump had a plan to end HIV by 2030. His re-election may kill that plan. In 2019, he announced the Ending HIV Epidemic Initiative. But the GOP seems determined to gut it entirely. Braidwood is a for-profit, closely held management organization owned bya trust with Dr. Steven F. Hotze, a religious Christian, as the sole trustee and beneficiary, according to KFF, the health policy research group. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Braidwood is represented by Gene Hamilton, a former Justice Department official in the first Trump administration, who now leads America First Legal with fellow Trump alum and Homeland Security advisor designee Stephen Miller. Also representing the plaintiffs is Jonathan Mitchell, who argued on Trumps behalf in the Colorado ballot access case before the Supreme Court last term, CNN reports.Braidwoods challenge to Obamacares preventative care provision was upheld in a succession of court decisions before its latest appearance before the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, which agreed with previous rulings in favor of the plaintiffs but only blocked the provision for Braidwood. Both the Biden administration and the plaintiffs agreed that the 5th Circuits ruling opened the door for another party to sue in order to block the mandates nationwide, so the parties asked the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the case. The case,Braidwood Management Inc. v. Becerra, rests on the assertion that as inferior officers, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which issued recommendations for preventive services like PrEP, operated outside the Constitution because its members are not approved by the Senate, thus violating the Appointments Clause. The plaintiffs also claiedm the requirement to cover PrEP violates Braidwoods religious rights under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, a 1993 law that prohibits the government from significantly burdening a persons religious exercise. If the challengers prevail on either the constitutional or the religious claims, the governments ability to require insurance plans to cover evidence-based preventive services without cost-sharing could be limited.Other preventative care benefits among the hundreds at risk in this provision are prenatal nutritional supplements, physical therapy for older Americans to prevent falls, and lung cancer screenings. Those screenings save 10,000 to 20,000 lives a year, according to the Biden administration. PrEP is an essential tool in the arsenal to fight and eliminate HIV as a serious health threat in the U.S. and around the world. PrEP access has been credited for reducing HIV and STI transmission rates around the world. Though PrEP doesnt prevent STIs, those on the medication tend to get regular sexual health screenings, making them more likely to detect and receive medical treatment for STIs.In her petition to the Supreme Court to take up the case, U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar wrote that the 5th Circuit ruling jeopardizes healthcare protections that have been in place for 14 years and that millions of Americans currently enjoy. This Courts review is warranted because the court of appeals has held an Act of Congress unconstitutional and its legal rationale would inflict immense practical harms, she wrote. The case should be heard, she said, because the appellate decision threatens to disrupt a key part of the ACA that provides healthcare protections for millions of Americans.A decision in the case is due by the end of the Supreme Courts term in June.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Whitney Cummings bizarre conspiracy about L.A. lesbian firefighters draws criticism & mockery
Comedian, actress, writer, and podcaster Whitney Cummings has been slammed for sharing controversial remarks on social media in reaction to the Los Angeles fires including a homophobic conspiracy theory. Amid sharing posts that declared she would arm herself with a wooden sword to fight alleged arsonists and blaming the media for misreporting information about the fires, Cummings posted a video Friday questioning the leadership of the "lesbians in charge of" the Los Angeles Fire Department."I came across a video of the fire chief. A lesbian. Love it.... Tried to be one, didn't take," Cummings said in an X video. "I don't think I'm a lesbian...I just live in Los Angeles. The men are so effeminate that honestly, at this point, dating a woman is like the straightest thing you can do."Cummings is referring to Los Angeless first out LGBTQ+ fire chief, Kristin Crowley. Throughout the disaster, Crowley has become a lightning rod of social media criticism among conservatives, who have called her a "DEI hire" and accused her of being unqualified despite decades of experience.Though Cummings acknowledged that "lesbians can be firefighters" and that she's not "thinking about your genitals or your preferences" when it comes to emergency responders, she then proposed that gay women running the LAFD are deliberately "recruiting more lesbians" to work with them.Cummings compared this alleged hiring process to a gay man only hiring other gay men, a straight woman wanting to hire "more hot guys" to work with, or a straight man declaring that his workplace needs "more hot blondes." Cummings then posed the question, "Isn't that essentially just recruiting people in your dating pool to work at your office?"The video concluded with Cummings showing an X post claiming that "all of the people in charge of L.A.'s fire response are lesbians named Kristin." She adds, "I don't recall voting on a prop that said we could recruit our fire team off Grindr. What?" (@) Lesbians were not Cummings's only controversial target. In other incendiary social media posts, Cummings mused about "people in L.A. talking about fire retardant more than they need to because they're having fun using the R-word again." She also joked about hoping that alleged arsonists "aren't near where Diddy stored his video tapes."And when an X user replied with a conspiracy theory that the recent L.A. fires were related to a "massive land grab and the upcoming Olympics," Cummings replied, "A lot of people talking about this." (@) (@) (@) PRIDE's sister site, Out, has reached out to Whitney Cummings for comment.Best known for creating the CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls, starring on NBC's Whitney, and hosting the Good for You podcast, Cummings is set to appear soon as a guest judge on RuPaul's Drag Race season 17.How are people reacting to Whitney Cummings's posts?Whitney Cummings's conspiracy theories about the 2025 Los Angeles fires have prompted a negative response from Hollywood stars, influencers, and other social media users. Content creator and Out100 honoree Matt Bernstein (@mattxiv) wrote on X: "I'm fine with a straight guy but THREE straight men? Something's fishy," in response to Cummings's reaction about three lesbian firefighters. (@) Without naming names, actor, writer, and comedian Guy Branum shared a few reactions Saturday that seem pointed at Cummings. These X posts read: "Multiple lesbians being at the top of an organization that requires brute strength, technical skill, and a desire to save people isn't DEI, it's nature taking its course." (@) In what seemed to be a reaction to Cummings's intent to fight arsonists with wooden swords, Branum stated, "If you are trying to hunt down an arsonist with a blowtorch, you should probably bring a weapon that isn't, you know, highly flammable." (@) Branum also called out this type of behavior in an Instagram video:"This is not a universal amongst comedians right now, but I just wanted to say that I think being a vigilante is bad. Going into dangerous areas where there are active fires and emergency crews are working, with weapons, because you think you're going to hunt down the arsonists It's danger to yourself, it's a danger to innocent people who you could mistake for arsonists, and it's a danger to the rescue crews who might have to save you from harm you do to yourself."The Bros star continued, "I love free speech, [and] I love America protecting free speech, but I think that people advocating, modeling, and doing dangerous things during times of crisis is dumb and it's wrong. I feel obliged to say: I don't think you should do it. I don't think you should encourage people to do it. I think it's really dumb. And I think, if you don't like California, I'm excited for you to leave."See on Instagram@theserfstv shared a Family Guy meme that shows Lois Griffin staring at a pill bottle that reads:"Throwing LGBTQ+ people under the bus to salvage dead career." (@) X user @KrangTNelson wrote:"[Seeing people pour gasoline into the sewer] f*ck I gotta text comedian Whitney Cummings about this." (@) Cummings is far from the only person to blame LGBTQ+ people for the L.A. fires. In addition to the online vitriol aimed at Crowley, a man made headlines last week for saying "all the gay people in L.A." were responsible for the destruction in an interview with local reporters, who quickly shut him down. This story is developing

Village People will play at anti-LGBTQ+ groups Trump inauguration event
Village People the disco band whose members were deliberately stylized as macho gay characters will play events celebrating the inauguration of soon-to-be President Donald Trump, arguably the most anti-LGBTQ+ president of all time.We know this wont make some of you happy to hear, wrote the bands lead singer Victor Willis (who dresses as the bands policeman character) in a recent Facebook post, however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics. Our song Y.M.C.A. is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost. Related Is it actually gay? Heres the true meaning of the song YMCA The bands frontman claimed the hit dance song isnt gay, but his gay bandmates remember things differently. Willis wrote that the band will perform at various events during Trumps second inauguration, including at least one event with Trump in attendance. The band is scheduled to perform at an inaugural eve ball hosted by the anti-LGBTQ+ conservative group Turning Point USA, according to the events website. The events high-profile attendees will include anti-LGBTQ+ figures like Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, Donald Trump Jr. and transphobic Trump administration nominee Tulsi Gabbard. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Turning Point USAs founder Charlie Kirk has promoted Christian nationalism, Trumps baseless conspiracy theories about fraud in the 2020 elections, and demonized transgender people, according to the Anti-Defamation League. The organization has a professor watchlist of educators who allegedly push dangerous anti-American immoral, and radical sexual/gender ideology onto students. Kirk himself has advocated the legal persecution ofthe alphabet mafia, groomers, [and] chemical castration of children, now all dog-whistles for LGBTQ+ community members and their allies.Trump repeatedly played Y.M.C.A. during his re-election campaign events and would occasionally pump his fists in the air to its beat. Willis has argued that the song itself isnt gay and is merely dedicated to his youth at the eponymous fitness community centers. However, David Hodo, who performed as the bands construction worker, said the song was absolutely written to celebrate gay men at the YMCA, adding and gay people love it.Willis raised eyebrows last December when he announced that, starting in January, he will sue each and every news organization that falsely refers to Y.M.C.A., either in their headlines or alluded to in the base of the story, that Y.M.C.A. is somehow a gay anthem. In his announcement, Willis basically said that the songs renewed popularity is making Willis a lot of money. His position appeared to contradicthis 2020 requestthat Trump no longer use any Village People music.Willis, who is heterosexual, said he originally asked Trump to stop using the song because the number of people complaining to him about it had become a nuisance, though his original request suggested discontent with Trumps threats on the American people. However, Willis said he changed his mind because Trump was having a lot of fun with the song and he didnt have the heart to stop him from using it.Gay cultural critic Michael Musto believes that the song has been straight-washed.All these years later, the gay subtext is gone, and its a rah-rah crowd-pleaser for the baseball stadium crowd, Musto said, noting the songs popularity at sporting events. It happens. A rallying song for the oppressed turns into a middle-of-the-road spirit-lifter, mainly because the straights like to steal things from the gays, take away all the scary edge, and make it their own.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Marjorie Taylor Greene rages at Sarah McBride for reading to kids: Child predator!
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is now calling Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE) a groomer and a child predator, despite not having any evidence that McBride had done either of those things. She also shared McBrides deadname on social media.Greene shared a clip from a Jazz&Friends National Day of School&Community Readings event at which McBride spoke about Jazz Jennings, a trans television personality who has been open about her transition since a young age. In the video, McBride is holding a copy of I Am Jazz, Jennings book. The events involved reading LGBTQ+ books to kids. Related Marjorie Taylor Greene threatens to beat up Sarah McBride on day before Trans Day of Remembrance Greene said that it would be assault for McBride to use womens facilities at the Capitol. She went to the doctor, and the doctor said that she, shes a girl and everyone should treat her as, treat her like a girl, McBride explains in the video to an audience of children at the Welcoming Schools event. Which is to say, they should call her Jazz and they should treat her with respect. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today McBride explained that Jennings was a girl but that people thought she was a boy, which is a common way of explaining trans identity. This groomer is lying to children, Greene wrote on X in response, sharing the video originally posted by hate influencer Chaya Raichik, who goes by Libs of TikTok online. God created us in HIS image, male and female, he created us.No doctor, body mutilation, or lifetime of pharmaceutical drugs will ever change your sex/gender. Congressman [deadname] McBride is a child predator and LIAR.Grooming refers to manipulative behaviors that the abuser uses to gain access to a potential victim, coerce them to agree to the abuse, and reduce the risk of being caught, according to the anti-sexual violence organization RAINN. The term groomer has come, over the last several years, to be used as a slur against LGBTQ+ people, with conservatives using it to insinuate that LGBTQ people are pedophiles, sexual predators, and threats to children, according to the media organization GLAAD. There is no reason to believe that Rep. McBride is a groomer or a child predator. The video showed a part of a Jazz&Friends National Day of School&Community Readings event. The events are sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA) and HRC, an LGBTQ+ organization. They are held in libraries and community centers and sometimes in private homes, according to their website, and involve reading books to kids. In a separate clip posted by Raichik to X, McBride can be seen reading the book to the kids. The children in the video Greene shared were likely attending with their parents or guardians. McBride is the first out trans member of Congress. Just after she was elected, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) introduced a resolution to ban McBride from using the womens facilities at the Capitol complex, despite how trans people have been working at and visiting the Capitol for years without incident. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) enacted the rule without putting it up to a vote by the House.Mace also posted about the HRC/NEA event that McBride participated in and said that she was grooming while calling Jennings book sexually explicit. Karine Jean-Pierre made Fox reporter blush during final White House press briefing
Out White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and Fox Newss Peter Doocy shared what initially seemed to be a conciliatory moment on Monday, January 13 before Doocy Foxed it all up.In what, according to Raw Story, is expected to be their final interaction in the White House press briefing room, Doocy, who has been one of the most antagonistic member of the White House press corps during the Biden administration, at first struck an uncharacteristically respectful note, thanking Jean-Pierre for putting up with him for over two years. Related Fox reporter mocked for extremely embarrassing question at White House briefing I dont even understand, Karine Jean-Pierre asked, exasperated. You could have stopped taking the hard questions years ago, and you didnt, so we appreciate that, he said. How will I fill that void without you?You tell me, Doocy replied, to which Jean-Pierre shot back, Start some rumors in here, I guess. In video from the interaction, a nearby reporter can be heard commenting that Doocy was getting red as Jean-Pierre and others shared a friendly chuckle.A smiling Doocy then addressed his final question to Jean-Pierre: Whos the leader of the Democratic Party during Donald Trumps second term in office.Jean-Pierre demurred. Honestly, that is for people much smarter than I to make that assessment, that decision, she told Doocy. Obviously, voters will decide. That is not something for me to decide.I cannot predict the future, so that is not something that Im going to do from here, she added. So, no leader of the party, Doocy responded.Thats not what I said, an exasperated Jean-Pierre replied. Im regretting this right now regretting all of this. You asked me about what 2028s gonna look like between now and 2028, she continued, explaining Doocys own question to him along with her answer. Thats not for me to decide. Thats not for me to speak to.Doocy shared a similar moment with Jean-Pierres predecessor, Jen Psaki, when she stepped down in May 2022, telling her that he was sorry to see her go.Are you? Psaki asked, eliciting laughter from other reporters. Doocy told Psaki that she had always been a good sport, and added that he couldnt wait to see Jean-Pierre, the first LGBTQ+ person and the first Black woman to be named White House press secretary, in the role.During an interview with the hosts of Pod Save America, Psaki had previously suggested that she didnt hold Doocys muckraking against him. LGBTQ+ stories to watch: The most anticipated movies and TV shows of 2025
LGBTQ+ movie and TV fans used to have to scour the archives of the indie and festival scene to find queer-friendly stories. In 2025 weve finally made enough progress that gay-friendly cinema is one of the most relevant genres being made today. Some of Hollywoods most famous stars are willing to attach their names to pride-filled projects, a brave act that catapults these films and series into the mainstream. As we turn the page to a new year its a great time to look forward to plenty of new LGBTQ+ movies and TV series. From cop romance dramas to some of Netflix and Maxs most iconic shows, these are the queer stories were excited to tune in for in the next 12 months.John Lithgow and Olivia Coleman in Jimpa. Photo: Protagonist PicturesJimpaOlivia Coleman and John Lithgow? What more could you ask for? These legendary screen icons will bring much critical and fan attention to Jimpa, one of the most anticipated LGBTQ+ dramas to debut at the Sundance Film Festival in recent times.Coleman will play a character that has a nonbinary child. Lithgow plays the beloved gay grandfather that Colemans child needs in their life. With so many respected actors and Sophie Hyde as the director, Jimpa has the potential to make people rethink the way queer people can support each other within the same family and across generations.PlainclothesPlainclothes is yet another anticipated Sundance Film Festival 2025 movie that fans of feel-good romance movies should look forward to. Russell Tovey plays a cop who accidentally falls in love with a target during an assignment to arrest gay men around New York in the 1990s. The movie is inspired by events such as the Metropolitan Police performing a witchhunt against gay men in London during the same decade. Tovey is familiar to queer audiences with performances in series such as American Horror Story: NYC and Looking. The Wedding BanquetThe Wedding Banquet made big waves in the 1990s. Directed by Ang Lee, the movie is a story of a bisexual man torn between a lavender marriage and his true desires to be with his gay love. This remake will be directed by Andrew Ahn and stars Lily Gladstone and Kelly Marie Tran.It remains unclear whether the story will be a direct translation of the original plot or will tweak the characters. It comes out in theaters on April 18.YellowjacketsHorror and LGBTQ+ are genres that go together like peanut butter and jelly. The lived experience of overcoming the scariest parts of homophobia and societal judgment as a queer person works in perfect unison with scary movies and shows. The frightening elements serve as a fitting analogy for queerness.Yellowjackets follows the journey of a group of high school soccer players when they crash in the wilderness. The show jumps between that timeline and the contemporary one in the 2020s to demonstrate how the past and present are always working in conjunction with each other. With confirmed lesbian romances and ones that are rife with bisexual questioning, Yellowjackets is the quintessential queer adventure series for LGBTQ+ fans. The show returns to Showtime and Paramount+ on February 14.Stranger ThingsYoud be forgiven if you forgot what happened the last time Stranger Things released new episodes on Netflix. Vecna last terrorized the Upside Down in the summer of 2022, but the streamer claims the final season will finally come out sometime in 2025.Set in the 1980s, Stranger Things has been daring in experimenting with queer relationships and characters thus far and in the process has allowed older generations to see their upbringing manifested on the small screen the way it should have been four decades ago. Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) are the two LGBTQ+ characters to watch in season 5.The Last of UsPedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey helped make the first season of The Last of Us one of the most successful video game adaptations of all time. While the main relationship drama that pushes the plot forward is the father/daughter dynamic between Joel and Ellie as they adventure through an undead-inundated wasteland, Ellies sexuality will also be explored much more in season two on Max.Ellies girlfriend, Dina (Isabela Merced), will make her debut throughout the new episodes that start releasing some time in April. Mainstream lesbian relationships are severely lacking in recent years on TV. The Last of Us has a burden and responsibility to make this pairing shine and theres no reason to expect anything other than sharp writing and great acting just as we saw in the maiden season. The History of SoundHistorical LGBTQ+ dramas give a voice to those queer people who were silenced. The History of Sound is a World War I film starring Paul Mescal and Josh OConnor as two companions who bond through the trauma of the early 20th centurys greatest human conflict, by recording the songs that soldiers used to capture the loneliness of the battlefield. OConnor already has experience in the queer drama sphere with his starring turn in Challengers. The History of Sound will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The HousekeeperUma Thurman and Phoebe Dynevor star in this period drama set in the 1930s. A housekeeper and a novelist fall into a secret love affair against all odds while trying to hide their true identities from the world. Set against The Great Depression, The Housekeeper should transport viewers back to a time when being LGBTQ+ was more societally unacceptable, the stress of which was exacerbated by the financial burdens of the decade. It is unannounced when the film will be released but it is tentatively set for sometime in 2025.Kiss of the Spider WomanJennifer Lopez and Diego Luna are the big names in this retelling of Kiss of the Spider Woman, which was previously an award-winning Broadway musical and a novel. Lopez is a film star in the imagination of Luis Molina, a gay man who dreams of a better life while wrongly imprisoned during the Argentine Dirty War. This one will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January. The post LGBTQ+ stories to watch: The most anticipated movies and TV shows of 2025 appeared first on News Is Out.

Amid fear, trans students and families plan for Trumps second term
On the Saturday after the election, Cheryl Suydam headed to an impromptu meeting for parents of trans kids. The gathering was called by the local chapter of PFLAG, an advocacy group that supports LGBTQ+ people and their families, to discuss their feelings after American voters elected a president who ran on an openly anti-trans platform, Chalkbeat reports.Every single person in that room was absolutely terrified, Suydam said.Suydam and her husband are the parents of three daughters, including a 15-year-old who is transgender. They live in Asheville, North Carolina, a more progressive community in a state that is less so.About two dozen parents seated around a living room discussed changing their childrens legal names while they still could, starting medical treatment while it was still available in other states, and moving to more welcoming communities. It was cathartic to connect with others living this same experience and feeling the need to mobilize in some way, Suydam said.President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to bar transgender athletes from competing in womens and girls sports, ban gender-affirming care for minors, investigate whether such care should be available even to adults, roll back the Biden administrations Title IX changes that gave transgenders students more legal protections at school, and punish schools that teach what Trump calls left-wing gender insanity.Teachers are wondering: What resources will I be able to use to keep kids safe? And thats not just LGBTQ kids, but all students, said Scott Miller, co-chair of the LGBTQ+ Caucus of the National Education Association.Students and teachers in Republican-led states that have passed anti-trans laws have experience resisting those laws, said Craig White, director of Supportive Schools at the Campaign for Southern Equalityand they have lessons for people in the rest of the country if the federal government pushes those policies into more states. Many anti-LGBTQ+ policies are vague, leaving room for districts and teachers to take a more supportive approach and for students to keep exercising their free speech, White said. Activists are also contesting those laws in the courts.Since Trumps election, White said he has been overwhelmed with calls from people who want to organize. My weeks have not just been doom and gloom, White said. Within just a couple of days, Ive seen people turning towards energy and activism and organizing. I have not even been able to keep up with the number of people contacting me and saying, Okay, were ready to take action. What do we do now?'Students Move to Secure Documents, Treatment Before InaugurationIn Texas, Mandy Giles works supporting families of trans children. Since the election, shes received many messages expressing fear and seeking advice.Parents of trans kids and young adults have been scared for a long time in Texas, but there has been a feeling that there was some level of federal protections that now may be going away, Giles said. She runs a monthly support group in Houston. The first meeting after the election had the most attendees everbut at least half of the families in the meeting said they will be moving out of state soon. Some families have been with us since the beginning, Giles said. We had some tearful goodbyes because we knew we wouldnt be seeing each other again before the end of the year.In North Carolina, Suydam has found support locally despite hostile state laws. The state has restricted discussions of gender and sexuality in elementary schools, banned gender-affirming care for minors, and barred transgender youth from competing in middle, high school, and college sports. Its an incredible community, Suydam said. As soon as my daughter came out, we contacted the school, and they quickly started using her preferred pronouns and name. Her daughter, whose name she asked to withhold to protect her privacy, started hormonal therapies before state legislators passed a bill in 2023 to ban gender-affirming care to minors. The law allowed minors who already were under treatment to continue. But her daughter had to stop swimming after legislators passed a law that students can only join sports teams for the genders they were assigned at birth. She used to be a competitive swimmer and has only competed as a female, Suydam said. Since these laws were passed, she has stopped because they gave people the freedom to talk openly against trans athletes. So, it never felt safe to talk to her teammates or the parents of the teammates about the fact that she was trans. The family is preparing for the coming months. Im actively updating all of her documentation to reflect her name and gender now and in the next few weeks while I still can, Suydam said.Trumps election means that any hopes of federal protection to counter state laws have disappeared. People are thinking about how they can protect themselves and their family members, advocates said.Ben Cooper is an attorney based in Columbus, Ohio, who has provided free legal advice at a legal aid clinic for LGBTQ people since 2016. Since the election, he said hes seen more people rushing to get their names and gender markers changed in legal documents. This type of change is regulated by state law, but advocates fear the Trump administration may adopt policies that affect federally issued documents like passports. My advice is: If youve been thinking about adjusting your documents, then theres no time like the present, Cooper said.Milo McBrayer, 17, who identifies as transmasculine and queer, is also considering fast-tracking his documents before Trump takes office.I am also thinking of going out of state to start gender-affirming care, said Milo, who also lives in Asheville. Because of North Carolinas ban, I didnt plan to do it before I turned 18, but now I dont know if my ability will go away after Trump takes office.Milo said that he has also become more active in local groups that support trans people as a way of building a stronger support system. One of those is the Pansy Collective, a group of LGBTQ+ artists, who recently organized a bug-out bag workshop. The workshop covered information about how to be safe and what to bring if you need to escape quickly, whether thats fleeing a natural disaster such as Hurricane Helene or moving across state lines to access gender-affirming medical care. The workshop was mostly about reducing anxiety by providing educational resources, said Riley, an organizer with the group who asked that his last name not be published.Bullying Is a Major Concern for Transgender YouthLast year, the Youth Risk Behavior Survey estimated that 40% of students who identify as transgender or who are questioning their gender identity suffered bullying at school. Advocates worry the election may exacerbate hostile environments in some schools.According to the Movement Advancement Project, 25 states have no specific protection for LGBTQ+ students in their anti-bullying laws, and two statesMissouri and South Dakotaactively ban schools from including LGBTQ+ students in their anti-bullying policies.Even in states such as North Carolina, where students have some protections from bullying, ensuring that schools respect the law is not always easy.In my old school, people just had the audacity to yell slurs at you walking down the hallway, said Milo, who transferred to a charter school for his senior year. And even though I was being bullied pretty heavily, the school refused to do anything about it because it was about me being trans. And that has turned into a political issue, not a human rights issue. In his new school, The Franklin School of Innovation, he feels much more comfortable and has found community among other queer students.Even in liberal states like California, trans students and their families can have difficulties. Juliet Stowers is an elementary school teacher in Orange County, California, and the parent of a 16-year-old trans girl. She said that it is not rare to hear anti-trans rhetoric in her district, and many parents complain about the presence of trans kids in schools. Some days, it can be debilitating, she said. Trump is saying that we, as teachers, are offering hormones or performing surgeries when we have to pay for the pencils in our classrooms.Stowers said shell continue working in the community to support other educators, parents, and kids.My daughter is terrified, but Ive been telling her, Dont worry, there are many people ready to fight. We are ready to fight,' she said.Across the country, Milo feels similarly.I felt very failed by the adults in my country, he said of the election results. So, I have been spending a lot of time grieving. But I have also been trying to do a lot of community work by helping my friends as much as I can, sharing resources to cope with this situation, and talking about it openly. This story was produced by Chalkbeat and reviewed and distributed by Stacker. The post Amid fear, trans students and families plan for Trumps second term appeared first on News Is Out.

LGBTQ+ equality is the only thing that improved under Joe Biden according to Americans
A new poll from Gallup shows that LGBTQ+ rights is the only policy area in which more Americans believe progress has been made than believe progress has been lost. The poll asked people whether they believe that the U.S. made progress, stood still, or lost ground on various issues including taxes, education, and healthcare in the last four years since President Joe Biden took office. For 17 of the 18 topics Gallup asked about, people responded that the country has lost ground. Related New poll finds strong majority opposes gender-affirming care bans for trans minors At the same time, a slim majority calls transitioning morally wrong. The last, though, was Situation for gay, lesbian, transgender people. Thirty-nine percent of Americans believe that the country has made progress here while only 23% believe that the country lost ground. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today | Screenshot/GallupIts hard to know how people were interpreting some of the categories. For example, different people might interpret progress on the question of taxes differently, either referring to how they believe the distribution of the tax burden changed or to how much they were personally paying in taxes. The economy could refer to unemployment, inflation, housing, or several other issues.Democrats, though, were more likely to have a better impression of the country than Republicans and had a net positive view of the Biden presidency when it came to energy, the situation for Black people, infrastructure, trade relations, national defense, terrorism, crime, the U.S.s position in the world, climate change, healthcare, education, and race relations, as well as LGBTQ+ equality.Republicans said that the country lost ground on 17 out of 18 issues by much wider margins than the general population, but they did agree that progress was made on the situation for gay, lesbian, transgender people. The results could be explained by how many people base their perception of the country on who is currently in the White House. Republicans sentiment about the economy dropped precipitously when Biden took office in 2021, while Democrats sentiment increased, for example. The perception that things have only improved for LGBTQ+ people is at odds with increased attacks on transgender rights that have occurred over the last four years. No states had banned gender-affirming care for trans youth at the beginning of 2021, but now over half of states have. Hundreds of anti-LGBTQ+ laws have been introduced at the state-level each year by Republicans since Biden took office. And just last year, the first anti-LGBTQ+ piece of legislation to pass Congress in decades was signed into law.In 2017, the same poll found a much wider gap on the question about LGBTQ+ equality with regards to the Obama administration, with a gap between made progress and lost ground of 52% compared to 16% for Biden. During the Obama administration, Dont Ask, Dont Tell was repealed, marriage equality became a reality in all states, and approval of LGBTQ+ people increased precipitously. Americans still thought progress was made under Donald Trumps first term, but with a margin of only 4%.The 2017 survey only asked about gays and lesbians and the 2021 survey about Trump asked about gay and lesbian Americans.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Rep. Becca Balint calls Republicans mean motherf**kers for their campaign against trans kids
In college, U.S. Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT) was nicknamed the Admiral by her womens crew team for her formidable skills motivating the rowers. At just five feet tall and south of 100 pounds, Balint may not have looked the part, but she defied first impressions and impressed with success. Shes displayed the same qualities in her political career. In her sophomore election last November for the at-large seat representing her state in the House of Representatives (tiny Vermont only gets one congressmember), Balint, 56, demolished her Republican opponent by more than 30 points; she did the same in her first run in 2022. The wins followed her quick rise to Majority Leader of the Vermont Senate after just two years in office. Shes the first woman and first openly LGBTQ+ person to represent her state inCongress.Effective leadership is more than barking orders and winning elections, though, and Balint listens as much or more than she speaks. While her opponents can come under withering criticism for behavior the mother-of-two finds juvenile (fellow members Nancy Mace, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Speaker Mike Johnson fall into that category for their treatment of trans colleague Rep. Sarah McBride), Balint is also behind the scenes listening to help Republicans find their courage in the face of MAGA colleagues dangerous and cruel provocations. Not that Balint doesnt relish making good trouble. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today My wife always says, I find the line of decency, and then I cross it, she admitted. With that, the Admiral jumped right in.LGBTQ Nation: You made a to-the-point Facebook post in November, writing, Leave trans kids alone. Beyond the wild demonization of trans people that Republicans and the Trump campaign undertook to gin up their base, was there something in particular that inspired you to write that post late on a Saturday afternoon five days after the election? Rep. Becca Balint: Yeah, look. Heres what I want people to understand: this did not just happen with this campaign, okay? The Republicans decided before the 118th Congress that this was the issue they were going to use to fire up their base. So many Americans have moved on from being outraged about same-sex marriage and I always joke that, you know, everyones been to a lesbian wedding at this point so they decided, okay, well, weve lost that battle. Essentially, what is the issue and Im going to use their own words against them like, what issue is going to trigger them? And it was trans kids. And it came up in committee hearings, it came up in amendments, and it was a completely orchestrated, concerted effort to demonize children and their parents. And I just have had enough. Ive had enough that theres no bottom. Ive had enough that they will stop at nothing to turn Americans against each other. Every American, every child, deserves health care that is appropriate for them, and the fact that they have no qualms about making life more difficult for children is disgusting. And so it was a culmination of everything that I had seen. And, of course, this was the meanest, most dehumanizing, demonizing campaign a Republican ticket has ever run. And I think we need to call it for what it is, which is hate and fear-mongering.Pronouns: a well-intentioned fad or a cultural necessity? You know, I think that language takes a long time to take hold in a culture. And so what I see what I think Republicans are missing, as well is actually most Americans are really trying hard to figure out how to be allies, how to be strong supporters of everyone in their community. And so, of course, the Republicans like to mock the whole concept of pronouns, but really it comes down to people wanting to be seen for who they are, the totality of who they are.And so, one of the things that Ive been thinking about is, on the one hand can I swear? Go ahead.Okay. On the one hand, the Republicans need to stop being such mean motherf**kers. Like, they need to stop being so horribly cruel. And on the other side, we as Democrats also need to give people grace who are really trying who are really trying and maybe theyre not getting it quite right. And Ive heard this from young people, actually, who want to be good allies, who want to be supportive of their friends, and they feel like they dont always get it right, but there seems to be no grace given for them for trying. And I think we do have to give people credit for trying, because language and culture takes a while to shift. It really does. Youre introducing a bill in Congress called the Combating Loneliness Act, which is aimed at reducing social isolation in the United States and addresses what you call three critical areas: social infrastructure, community health care, and supporting mental health in schools. You wrote in an opinion piece about it, Humans, we are hardwired for connection, and went on to say that Americans have always had intense policy disagreements in this country. But we didnt so easily and casually attack the inherent dignity and self-worth of Americans on the other side of the political aisle. Were at a very unhealthy place right now, individually, and collectively. I think many people would agree, but as far as the causes behind that condition, I didnt see any mention of social media in your argument, which many of those same people see as the root cause of the mental health crisis and attendant loneliness epidemic your bill intends to address. Twitter gave rise to Donald Trump. Instagram is devastating young peoples self-esteem. Facebook is a cesspool of Russian bots and misinformation the first reply to your Leave trans kids alone post was generated by a bot. Exactly what kind of value does social media bring to society?I think about this a lot. Look, there is no question that social media is part of the problem of a crisis of disconnection, especially among young people. It can be a tool for good. It can be a tool for healthy connection, connecting groups together who might not find each other otherwise, especially if youre living in a rural area and you dont feel like you have a lot of opportunities for social connection around you. And most specifically, if you are in the LGBTQ community, right? So there are positives. The challenge for us in Congress in trying to attack this problem of the horrible algorithms that drive people, most specifically, to extremes on the right that are full of misogyny and homophobia and racism, is that you want to make sure its carefully crafted so that teens and youth can still access connections that they wouldnt be able to find otherwise. And whats been difficult is to thread that needle.Because what has happened is folks on the other side have tried to craft much more sweeping language, which would identify groups that were just trying to connect queer youth with each other as being pornographic, or being not fit for youth. And so, yes, weve got to address this issue. We have to do it carefully. But I also think there is a really important point here to be made about awareness. I dont think a lot of parents understand, really, how the algorithms work. And so when you are a young person, and your eyeball pauses for a few moments on something, the algorithm is learning that. Oh, you want to see more of that. And I have heard this from parents across Vermont, that they know that their kids, and most particularly their boys and young men and their families, are seeing material that is driving sexism, misogyny in particular, and certainly other content that is demonizing groups of people. So that has to be a focus of the work going forward.Would you support national mandatory service for young people in the military, or some other form of public service of their choosing, like the Peace Corps or Teach for America?Yeah, I mean, I would. I dont see this Republican conference ever going along with that, because they will do what theyve done for years, which is call it socialism and communism. They will not entertain any idea about bringing us together. Their brand right now is about dividing us and driving us apart. But yes, when young people feel a sense of purpose, a calling to do something that isnt just about them and its about their community and groups of people that need assistance, they do feel better about themselves. We know that altruism helps people feel better about their place in the world. Youve said that ever since you can remember, you wanted to run for public office. Whats your first memory of politics or a political event?Oh, well, I mean, it all depends on how you define political event, because I ran to be class president in first grade and was victorious, so long line. But one of the most meaningful moments that I had seeing how my voice could make a difference was I was tapped to sit as a high school student representative to my board of education, and I was in a room full of mostly men, I think overwhelmingly men. There might have been one woman on the board and they were debating whether to entirely cut the JV cheerleading program. And it was really funny because, as a gay woman, I think its kind of funny that I was the champion of the cheerleaders, but my older sister was a cheerleader. Their argument was that it wasnt really a sport. There wasnt a lot of worth in it. And I knew from my own sisters experience that she actually got a lot from it. It was physically very demanding. And I said, I think its really strange that youre thinking of continuing to fund not just the JV football team, but like, the third string team that plays, you know, scrimmages, essentially, and theyve lost every game, right? Like, what are we doing here? And I dont know where I found my voice to be able to say that to a room full of adults, but I made my case. I pointed out to them how unfair it was, and in the end, they voted to save the program. And so it was a moment of realizing, actually, when you speak candidly, when youre able to make your case and shine a light on aspects of the issue that theyre not thinking about, you can make a difference. That was very powerful for me.You cite slain San Francisco supervisor and activist Harvey Milk as an influence. How did you come to learn about him, and whats one thing from his experience in politics that youve brought to your own?I was a voracious reader of the news, starting in about 5th grade, you know? I just needed to know what was going on in the world, and when I heard about his assassination, of course, it was just personally devastating, as someone who really wanted a life in politics thinking, Well, maybe thats not going to happen in my lifetime. Maybe theres just not a safe environment to do that. One of the things that really intrigued me about Harvey Milk was that when he first ran, he ran on those issues that were directly impacting his community. And one of the things that was very important to people in his neighborhood was that people werent cleaning up after their dogs, and it was impacting peoples quality of life. And it wasnt a big, sexy issue, but it was about listening, about listening to the people. This is a small issue, but it impacts our quality of life, and feeling like people are not being respectful of each other, and that really stayed with me.You describe yourself as a progressive? How do you define the term? For me, it is about constantly looking to become better people, and through becoming better people, create a government that is better and meets the needs of all of the people. For me, it is a much more holistic kind of understanding of the word progressive. And I also see it as bringing as many people into the movement as you possibly can. Thats the only way that were going to have a real economic revolution here. And I mean revolution in the sense of a sea change, because when we talk about the crisis of loneliness, when we talk about issues around the hyper-partisanship, so much of it not all of it but so much of it is rooted in this gross, crass economic disparity.I taught history for a long time, and I do think you can really make a strong case that we are in a second Gilded Age here. You know, back to the Age of the Robber Barons, and the robber barons have just taken different forms. Theyre now Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos and others. But its killing us. Its killing not just the economy of so many people. It is destroying the democracy from the inside. And so I do think we as progressives if I can do a little self-critique here I think we as progressives have to be much better about being in rooms with people who dont necessarily agree with us, and we need to sit in that discomfort, and we need to listen deeply. We need to go back to what Sen. Paul Wellstone said: We all do better when we all do better. Weve forgotten that, when we idolize the billionaires at the top who are continuing to squeeze every last dime out of working people. They are like idols.Theres an anti-intellectual streak that runs through Trump and his MAGA base and loyalists that theyll be directing at college and university endowments in his second term, among other lines of attack. Youre a product of those elite institutions, with time at Barnard, Smith College, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and at Yale. Whats your defense of higher learning in America?Look, higher learning has a place to constantly be pushing the intellectual envelope, to to strive for evidence and data. And Im someone you know, I love footnotes, I love the details, I love to dive into the details. And I have had to retrain myself over the last few years about not talking about the details and the footnotes when Im talking to my constituents, because it can feel quite off-putting. I read a lot of history and philosophy and social psychology, and I try to sprinkle it into the stump speeches that I give so that we can think about sort of higher ideals, but I try to do it in a way that is inviting people in and not making a dividing line. We should be constantly examining the data and refining the work that were doing, and academics are so good at that. But the way that we are communicating the ideas has to be much more inclusive. As an aside, one of the things that Ive learned since the election and talking to my colleagues in more battleground districts is the fight over loan forgiveness has become a much more potent class issue than any of us, I think, anticipated. And so, of course, when you look at the data, the people who are really benefiting from that are low-income people. They are people of color, right? Overwhelmingly, theyre holding more debt. But the way that weve communicated about it and talked about it was really off-putting to people within the working class who had gotten other means of certification, who didnt necessarily go to college, and there was a question of fairness around it, and equity, and so we cant be blind to that. That took me by surprise. As elected leaders, there is this incredible pressure to be perfect and not admit mistakes and not revisit dont do the post-mortem entirely, and I think we have to do that. You know, thats how I live my life. Doesnt feel good, but you got to do it. Protecting the planet is high on your list of priorities. Whats the single most important thing the world should do to address the climate crisis? We have to absolutely reduce CO2 emissions. Theres just no other way around it. And I get so concerned with the reelection of Trump that we are no longer seen on the world stage as a potential leader on this issue. Its very, very heartbreaking for me, because it does impact real people on the ground. Weve had catastrophic flooding in Vermont now for two summers in a row. In our capital, Montpelier, two years ago, every single small business in our downtown was destroyed every single one, and its going to continue to happen. Were just going to continue to move closer to the point of no return. And I know for young people, in particular, its their number one issue. We cant shy away from that work because thats its critically important. Theres no other way around it.You met your wife, Elizabeth Wohl, when you were a rock climbing instructor at a Vermont summer camp in 2000. It sounds like a perfect meet-cute scenario. How did it go down? Oh, my goodness. Oh, we just, you know, we made each other laugh. That was it. I mean, we just crack each other up. Actually, one of the things that we bonded over, which is quite silly, but we used to write these historical parodies, because I taught history for a long time, so she would help me write songs to teach my kids about all the content so they could remember it. And we did a great Britney Spears one on all the Greek myths. We did one on the Romans and Egyptians, and one on the Pilgrims. And when you find somebody that you can just be creative with, while also having serious conversations, its just such a gift. You have two kids, Abraham and Sarah, as you mentioned. How old are they, and what do they think of politics? They are now 17 and 14. Sarah will be 15 this summer, and they are both interested in my work, for sure, and we have long-ranging family dinners. And they really challenge me. Like, Ill walk through the door and my son will say, Lets talk about your votes this week, which keeps you on your toes, right? (laughing). Whats the best thing about representing your constituents from Vermont in Congress? One of the best things about it is that this work combines my love of people and my interest in helping to solve problems. Doing meaningful work on behalf of Vermonters and their families is such an honor for me. As hard as it can be at times, the job is always interesting. And I really enjoy that aspect of it.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

How to take the perfect dating app photo to boost your matches, according to photographers
If you're looking for love in the new year you probably already know that building the perfect dating app profile takes time. It doesn't just happen accidentally. It takes finesse! That's why we polled the experts on how to write the best profile, and the kind of photos people want to see, but maybe you're wondering how to take those pics that make you look your most alluring. Now we're back with advice from two professional photographers. Atlanta-based portrait and wedding photographer Omotola Ajibade, and Pittsburgh-based portrait photographer and photography teacher Don Orkoskey laid out all the details on how to hone your selfie-taking skills. Here are 5 tips from Ajibade and Orkoskey to take your selfies to the next level!Contrast makes you pop!"First, people are drawn to contrast," says Orkoskey. "So, make sure that you're well-lit but that your background is dark. It doesn't need to be black, but it should make you really stand out from the background and pop off the screen." This tip applies to a lot more than just your background, it's also good to consider when planning what you're going to wear. "Contrasting colors help us to pop off the page as well. It's important to know what colors you look good in. It doesn't matter if it's jewel tones or earth tones. You can make those pop by using brightly colored accessories. Just make sure you're not overdoing it, you don't want to be a neon sign unless that's really your personality, in which case, go for it!"Pay attention to lighting.Ajibade keeps his lighting advice simple, and says, "The most important thing is to position yourself so your face and eyes are well-illuminated."In practice, here's what you want to look for. "Generally, I recommend avoiding lighting situations where the light is coming from exactly above or below the person's chin," he says. "In the first scenario, the light can create a hotspot directly on the forehead, making it look larger than reality. Light from below tends to look unnatural and ghoulish because very little light enters the eyes. In such situations, you may need additional lighting."This is another aspect where Orkoskey's contrast advice is applicable! He says, "When it comes to finding contrast you've got to be like Punxsutawney Phil and look for your shadow. I call this the Punxsutawney Rule, if you can see your shadow and the edges of it are hard you've got the right amount of contrast to make a photo that will pop. The challenge now is to face into that light without it causing you to squint. If you can catch some of that light in your eyes to make them sparkle you'll be irresistible."Angles. Are. Everything.Case in point for how important angles are? Orkoskey says, "When it comes to the right angle to photograph yourself think back to 2020's Zoom face fiasco and compare that with the standard selfie angle. The reason the selfie angle is more flattering is because whatever is closer to the camera is going to appear larger."Play with positioning your camera. "If you're self-conscious about your midsection then placing the camera slightly above your eyeline will move that part of your body farther away from the camera," explains Orkoskey. "On the other hand, if you love your curves, show them off."Ajibade explains that this is true for whatever you place in front of the camera and that this gives you a lot of power to highlight your favorite features. "Whatever is closest to the camera is always going to be the largest in the frame, and that's the thing that viewers' eyes will most likely be drawn to. This can be a great opportunity to highlight a feature you love about yourself. So, if you love your smile, then angle it so it features more prominently. Additionally, this means you can de-emphasize other parts you might be insecure about by pushing them further from the camera."However, Ajibade also warns against taking this advice too far. "Avoid extreme angles unless they serve an intentional purpose. For example, angling the camera up towards the subject too much can create a powerful and domineering appearance. Likewise, angling the camera down towards your subject can create a more diminutive or demure look. If that's not your general vibe, avoid making images that create that impression."Selfies are like real estate: location, location, location! You should be the main focus of any picture, but the setting and background are also a great way to show more of your personality. "For any portrait," says Ajibade, "I always recommend being comfortable in your clothing, the environment, and the situation. Part of the utility of photographs is that they allow your potential match to envision what a date with you might look like. Some of your photos should be in places that you're comfortable in like a favorite park, coffee shop, bookstore, etc."He also has some very logical tips for showing off your interests and hobbies without broadcasting too much information to strangers. "Sometimes, people are worried about security and safety. If that's the case, pick a location that is similar to your favorite place (maybe even on the other side of town) but not your exact favorite place." A genius idea!Authentic is always better than perfect.Remember: these aren't for starting a modeling career, they're for prospective partners to get a sense of who you are. So be yourself! Ajibade says. "Your images should help you imagine what dates with you could look or feel like. I generally recommend at least one photo of each of the following: a casual/everyday look (for low-stakes outings), a dressed-up look (for important occasions like a work party, fancy dinners, etc.), and a photo of you participating in a favorite hobby or pastime. The hobby photo can include pictures with friends, provided they consent to having their photos on the internet."He also advises against looking overly stiff or posed. "When working with portrait clients, one thing I do get a real smile is to play a special from their favorite comedian or ask them to think of something funny. Often, within a few minutes, we've got a couple of real smiles and have loosened up for the rest of the shoot."Orkoskey reminds us that even if you're not naturally comfortable in front of the camera, you've got to fake it until you make it! "Your face should look natural but if you're too worried about the photos that stress is going to show. So, if you can't shake the anxious look then channel someone you love and respect. Think about how they'd pose, the expression they'd use, the power and confidence they have. This will make all the stress leave your body. Just be aware that it might also make you look self-absorbed or over confident so be sure to pay attention to how much you're putting on in case you need to take it down a notch."And there you have, go forth and level up that selfie game! Experts cited:Omotola Ajibade, a portrait and wedding photographer based in Atlanta, Georgia.Don Orkoskey, a portrait photographer and photography teacher based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Rachel Maddow comes back to MSNBC five nights a week just in time to report on Trumps second term
Lesbian political commentator Rachel Maddow will resume hosting her eponymous MSNBC program The Rachel Maddow Show five nights a week during the first 100 days of the incoming administration of soon-to-be President Donald Trump. She began hosting the program only on Monday nights in May 2022 to focus on four podcasts, a new book, and film projects.Maddows new schedule will begin on the night of Trumps inauguration on January 20 and go until April 30. The first 100 days of each new presidency has become a somewhat arbitrary measure of the leaders effectiveness in using their political capital, generally high favorability ratings, and eagerness of a new Congress to advance their agenda, according to Voice of America. Related Rachel Maddow blasts MSNBC for inexplicable hiring of election denier Ronna McDaniel She said its like a district attorney hiring a mobster. In the first Trump term, one of the things that we learned was this idea of watching what they do, not what they say, Maddow recently told USA Today. The actions of the administration are often much more consequential than whatever crazy thing hes recently said. Indeed, MSNBCs viewership declined 46% after the election compared to the first 10 months of the year, according to The Los Angeles Times. However, she said she expects many viewers to re-engage because Trumps second term will have serious consequences for many Americans. When Maddow scaled back her hosting responsibilities in May 2022, journalist Alex Wagner took over, keeping the original shows monologue and guest interview format but changing the programs name to Alex Wagner Tonight. Starting on January 20, Wagner will begin hosting a field reporting series entitled Trumpland: The First 100 Days in which she examines Trumps policies impacts on communities across the nation.Maddow provided her insights and commentaries throughout the election season, expressing shock at the outrageous personal questions asked in Trump hiring forms, mentioning the one very easily disprovable lie that Vice President-elect J.D. Vance told at his debate and also raised worries about Trumps eventual victory early into the campaign.Acknowledging the end of fact-checking on increasingly right-leaning social media networks and the rise in people who get news through those networks (as opposed to TV news journalists), Maddow said, As long as were still here, our job is pretty clear: Follow the facts, dont be intimidated, tell true stories, help people understand the world. And Im going to keep doing that.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Turkeys president blames gays for falling birthrate, calls LGBTQ+ rights neoliberal
Turkeys President Recep Tayyip Erdoanlaunched a new Year of the Family initiative aimed at shoring up his countrys tumbling birthrate and held the LGBTQ+ community partly to blame for it.In his remarks at an event in Ankara on Monday, the longtime authoritarian leader cited what he called the historical truth that a strong family paves the way for a strong state. But the family is under attack, Erdoan said, by forces including gay people, who are part of a foreign conspiracy to undermine Turkey. The target of gender neutralization policies, in which LGBT is used as a battering ram, is the family, Erdoan claimed. They also lead to LGBT and other movements gaining ground. In such an environment, population loss is inevitable, he added.Turkeys annual population growth rate dropped from 2.53% in 2015 to 0.23% last year. Erdoan called the numbers alarming and said Turkey was losing blood. He admonished families for not heeding his advice in 2007 to have at least three children and lamented people getting married later in life and rising divorce rates as causes for concern. If we do not take the necessary measures, the problem will reach irreparable levels, he said. The Turkish president unveiled a package of policies including interest-free loans for newlyweds; improved monetary allowances for the parents of newborn children; financial, counseling, and housing support to encourage new families; and free or low-cost child care, the AP reported. What else he could do to combat the battering ram of perverse ideologies was left unstated. Mandy Moore's family taken in by Hilary Duff after losing home in LA wildfires
Hilary Duff and husband Matthew Koma have opened their home to fellow aughts pop icon Mandy Moore and her family amidst the ongoing wildfires plaguing Los Angeles.Moore previously shared images of the devastation wreaked upon her Altadena home in the Eaton fire, noting that the main part of their house was left "miraculously...not livable but mostly intact.""We lost our garage and back house," she wrote on Instagram. "Everyone we know lost everything. Every house on our street is gone."Like many others, Moore and her family turned to loved ones for a temporary place to stay as they try to figure out what to do next. A recent Instagram post shared by her brother-in-law, Griffin Goldsmith, revealed that it was Duff and Koma who stepped up to take the This Is Us star in."Our dear friends @matthewkoma and @hilaryduff thought it wise to set up a gofundme for us to help with everything moving forward," he said. "Not to mention they are currently housing my brother's family. They've taken care of my entire family from the moment this began. I will never be able to thank them adequately. This is the kindest act any human could do for another."Goldsmith is the brother and bandmate to Moore's husband, Taylor Goldsmith. She had previously shared that their music studio "with every instrument and piece of equipment they've ever owned" was among the losses they suffered in the fire. His post also highlighted the reality that many families in areas impacted by the fire are currently experiencing not just a loss of their own homes, but of the community they built in the area.See on Instagram"We had convinced our whole family and closest friends to join us in Altadena. Our parents were around the corner. They lost their house as well," he wrote. "Taylor and Mandy are just down the street. Kit's best childhood best friend Chelsey and her husband Michael live about six blocks away. Wylie and his wife Clara are two blocks from us. Our first crew member and very old friend, Jake, and his wife Andy are just down the street. All of these houses are gone."On Monday night, the brothers performed their band's song, "Time Spent in Los Angeles," on Jimmy Kimmel Live! as part of a fundraising effort for musicians affected by the fires.

MAGA bro clowns himself with his definition of 'woke' & the internet has a field day
(@) The first two weeks of 2025 have been ROUGH we've already experienced bombings, Donald Trump not going to jail, and Los Angeles being on fire but watching a MAGA supporter look foolish when trying to describe their own belief system is making everything better. In a video now going viral it has 1.6 million views at the time of publication political commentator and YouTuber Luke Beasley, who has a series where he interviews Trump supporters, talked to one very sunburnt MAGA bro and asked him about why the right is so obsessed with companies going "woke" and how he would define the term."Woke? Like leave the damn kids alone, that's for sure. That pisses me off," the man answered. The progressive YouTuber pressed, "Woke is leave the kids alone?""Basically, just being woke like you're just shoving crap down our throats. Like you have to do this, and you have to do that, and you have to obey this, and you can't say that because Sally over there is going to get offended," the tattoo-covered Trump supporter answered."You can't read this book, you can't be gay, etcetera," Beasley adds, following the man's argument to the natural conclusion, and surprisingly the man agreed, "Yeah, dude, all sorts of things."The MAGA supporter agreeing with Beasley that "woke" ideology is bad because it's an attempt to control people, like telling them they "can't be gay," is hilarious and ironic considering how much the Republican Party tries to push their own morals and values onto the rest of America. He almost ran face-first into the point but ended up missing it by a mile. While this muscle-bound conservative might not have seen the humor in the interview, people in the comments certainly did. The reactions to the short video are priceless, from people lusting after the muscular Republican with comments like "He can top me" and "smash, next" to others claiming he must be closeted, writing, "'can't be gay, etc' oh he clocked dudes tea" to commenters making fun of the sunburned shirtless MAGA supporter by saying, "Dude is going to need a lot of ivermectin for his skin condition in the future."Keep scrolling to see the funniest reactions to a MAGA bro looking dumb in front of the whole internet! (@) "using sunscreen and not getting skin cancer is also woke, huh?" (@) "He is the living embodiment of this meme" (@) "Sunscreen is woke." (@) "HE CAN TOP ME" (@) "smash, next." (@) "'can't be gay, etc' oh he clocked dudes tea" (@) "Whenever I ask any of the "anti-woke" MAGA GOP to define "woke," I never hear from them again." (@) "omg hes hot tho" (@) "Went right over his head" (@) "uhm??? he's giving CLOSETED'..." (@) "Thanks for the big yellow arrow pointing him out as the trump supporter. I couldnt tell by the everything about him." (@) "Dude is going to need a lot of ivermectin for his skin condition in the future" (@) "His definition of woke is basically the republican party." (@) (@) "Like Fortune 500 companies, corporations, places that pay good salaries & benefits. Those woke companies. (Where do these folks work anyway?)" (@) "To this day, I still don't know what is defined as "woke" by the right. Yet, it has stuck. We even have some Dems saying they're not woke or that certain institutions aren't woke. But no one ever defines its meaning!!" (@) "Definitions are really hard for the right." (@) "The guy can't even afford a shirt? Sad." (@) "Might need to introduce him to 'woke' sunscreen." (@) "Does he need a GoFundMe for a shirt?"

Pete Hegseth grilled by Democrats over past comments & behavior against women
Mondays Senate confirmation hearing of Pete Hegseth a former Fox News host and President-elect Donald Trumps pick for secretary of defense included numerous questions about his alleged drinking problems, allegations of sexual assault and past statements opposing women serving in military combat roles. In many instances under questioning from Democratic senators, Hegseth deflected or avoided answering questions directly.Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) kicked off the criticisms, stating, I do not believe you are qualified to meet the overwhelming demands of this job. The totality of your own writings & alleged conduct would disqualify any service member from holding any leadership position. Related Pete Hegseth walks back his opposition to gay people serving in the military Donald Trumps defense secretary nominee is also changing his tune on women serving in combat roles. Shortly after being named as Trumps nominee, media reports revealed that Hegseth was accused by his own mother of abusing women and by previous coworkers of drinking on the job and sexually pursuing female colleagues. He had also beenpreviously accusedof paying off a woman who accused him of raping her while they attended a Republican conference in 2017 and of racking up over $400,000 in debt while serving as president of the organization Veterans for Freedom. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Hegseth repeatedly said during his hearing that the accusations against him were a coordinated smear campaign orchestrated in the media against us.Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) noted that Hegseth has repeatedly argued women should not be allowed to serve in combat roles because theyre not as capable as men. Hegseth has previously said,[Including women in combat roles] hasnt made us more effective, hasnt made us more lethal, has made fighting more complicated.Referring to Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Joni Ernst (R-IA), Sen. Shaheen asked Hegseth, Should we take it that you believe that the two women on this committee who have served honorably and with distinction made our military less effective and less capable?Hegseth said, Women in our military, as I have said publicly, have and continue to make amazing contributions across all aspects of our battlefield. Later, Shaheen asked, Why should women in our military, if you were the secretary of Defense, believe that they would have a fair shot at an equal opportunity to rise through the ranks if, on the one hand you say that women are not competent, they make our military less effective, and on the other hand, you say, Oh no, now that Ive been nominated to be the secretary of Defense, Ive changed my view.Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) also criticized Hegseths recently changed view on women in combat, saying, Ive heard of death bed conversions. But this is the first time Ive heard of a nomination conversion.Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) asked Hegseth about the rape accusation from 2017. Hegseth responded, I was falsely accused in October 2017. It was fully investigated. And I was completely cleared. However, Hirono replied, I dont think completely cleared is accurate. Indeed, Hegseth paid off the woman and never challenged her claims in any court of law. As such, there was no legal investigation to completely clear him.Hirono then asked Hegseth about accusations of his being drunk on the job when serving as president for Concerned Veterans for America (C.V.A.). Several former C.V.A. employees said in a whistleblower report that Hegseth was repeatedly intoxicated during various work events and had to be carried out of events due to his inability to walk while drunk.Hegseth dodged a question from Hirono asking whether hed commit to resigning as Secretary of Defense if he drank on the job. He also refused to answer her question of whether he would order the military to comply if Trump ordered soldiers to shoot protestors in the legs. That sounds to me that you would comply with such an order, Hirono said in response to Hegseths silence. She later asked whether Hegseth would you carry out an order from President Trump to seize Greenland, a territory of U.S. NATO ally Denmark, by force. Hegseth tried to deflect the question by saying that Trump hadnt revealed his military strategy yet. Hirono said she understood Hegseths answer to implicitly be yes.Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) pointed out that Hegseth cheated on his wife, sleeping with another woman two months after the birth of his infant daughter. Hegseth tried to deflect by calling his daughter a child of God and misleadingly claiming that he had been completely cleared of sexual assault accusations. However, Kaine repeatedly asked him about it, in an effort to show unbecoming conduct. Adultery is grounds for a soldiers dishonorable discharge under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). Kaine also noted that Hegseth never revealed anything about these accusations to Trumps presidential transition team under fear that it would hurt his chances to become the Secretary of Defense."You had just fathered a child two months before by a woman who was not your wife I assume at each of your weddings you pledged to be faithful to your wife" absolutely brutal line of questioning here from Kaine to Hegseth on his infidelities and sexual assault accusation pic.twitter.com/3VYhuQ7JOh Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) January 14, 2025 Republicans largely supported Hegseth during the hearing. Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) refused to allow a second round of questioning, and, after the hearing, said, This was a tour de force, a takedown, a triumph. I think it was a magnificent display. I dont think it could have gone any better.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Two Democrats help House Republicans pass anti-trans sports ban
House Republicans voted today to pass a bill that would ban transgender students from playing sports at any federally funded schools and education programs. LGBTQ+ advocates condemned the vote. Its unclear when its companion bill in the Republican-controlled Senate will receive a vote and doubtful that the bill will receive enough Democrat support to pass the upper chambers 60-vote threshold to overcome a filibuster. The bill, entitled the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, passed largely along party lines in a 218-206 vote, with two Democrats supporting the transphobic bill along with all Republicans the Democrats were Texas Reps. Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar. Three Republicans and six Democrats didnt vote, while one Democrat voted present, The Hill noted. Related Two House Democrats say they oppose trans athletes competing against girls & women They made their statements after Republicans rad anti-trans political ads against several Democratic candidates. Politico noted that Gonzalez aired an election season ad stating that he opposes trans women playing womens sports, and that the issue was a notable one for Latino voters, the majority of which supported President-elect Donald Trump in the last election.Ina November interview with Politico, Cuellar said that Democrats have underestimated how strongly voters feel about the issue, especially in rural America and his district in South Texas. The bill would amend Title IX the federal civil rights law prohibiting sex discrimination in government-fundedschools and education programs to prohibit schools from allowing trans female athletes to participate in athletic programs or activitiesdesignated for women or girls. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today While the bill defines sex as based solely on a persons reproductive biology and genetics at birth, the Congressional Equality Caucus, noted that the bill could force any student to answer invasive personal questions about their bodies & face humiliating physical inspections to prove that theyre a girl. The caucus referred to the bill as the Child Predator Empowerment Act. BAD BILL MOVING Its day 12 of the 119th Congress, and House Republicans are already considering a federal ban on trans girls from participating in school sports. Here's a about H.R. 28, better known as the GOPs Child Predator Empowerment Act, and what it means: Congressional Equality Caucus (@EqualityCaucus) January 14, 2025When introducing the bill, Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) wrote in a statement that repeatedly misgendered trans women, The radical left is not in step with the American people on the issue of protecting womens sports. Americans have loudly spokenthat they do not want men stealing sports records from women, entering their daughters locker rooms, replacing female athletes onteams, and taking their daughters scholarship opportunities. In a statement opposing the bill, out lesbian Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT) said, This is interrogation of young girls about their bodies; this asking people to show them whats underneath their underwear. That is what were talking about.Another opponent of the bill, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) wrote, There is no enforcement mechanism in this bill. And when there is no enforcement mechanism, you open the door for every enforcement mechanism. While Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) drew criticism after the 2024 election for saying that he opposes trans girls and women in girls and womens sports, he didnt support the bill, calling it too extreme and saying, This is not the sort of balanced, fairness-oriented policy Ive advocated for, and I wont vote yes on this bill just because it is the first option that comes to the floor.Over 400 LGBTQ+ and civil rights groups haveasked congressional legislators to oppose the bill. In a statement against the bills passage in the House, Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson wrote, We all want sports to be fair, students to be safe, and young people to have the opportunity to participate alongside their peers. But this kind of blanket ban deprives kids of those things. This bill would expose young people to harassment and discrimination, emboldening people to question the gender of kids who dont fit a narrow view of how theyre supposed to dress or look. It could even expose children to invasive, inappropriate questions and examinations.Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, Executive Director for Advocates for Trans Equality, wrote in a statement, The American people have a laundry list of urgent matters impacting our families everyday and our ability to put food on our tables and roofs over our heads, and these anti-trans politicians are ignoring the peoples business to take up the hateful agenda of right-wing extremists. In a statement released Tuesday, Allison Scott,Director of Impact and Innovation at theCampaign for Southern Equality, called the House vote a cruel and unjust abuse of power that targets a very small number of young people who just want to play school sports with their friends.I want to send a clear message to transgender young people and their families: No law can strip you of your inherent dignity and humanity, and we will never stop working alongside you and a huge community nationwide to ensure all people can live authentically and with joy, she added, calling upon senators to reject the legislation. Equality California, the states LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, said the vote represents yet another effort [by Republicans] to deny transgender youth the dignity and respect they deserve.Participation in sports provides kids with invaluable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, discipline, and cooperationfundamental lessons that every young person deserves the chance to experience, the organization stated. Beyond the field, sports also contribute significantly to students overall well-being, fostering better mental health, boosting academic performance, and enhancing self-esteem and confidence.Local schools and athletic associations across the country are already creating policies that protect transgender youth and ensure a level playing field for all studentsand theyre working, the group added. Our schools should be focused on providing the best possible education and helping to improve the well-being of all students, not actively harming students mental health and creating a hostile environment by singling out certain people. Every child deserves equal access to these opportunities.Of all the athletes competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which oversees competition in most federally funded colleges and universities, fewer than 0.002% are estimated to be trans.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Unsurprisingly, fans on platforms like X have had A LOT to say about the announcement.Meanwhile, Underwood said she is honored and humbled.I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event, Underwood said. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.Fans React to Carrie Underwoods ChoiceThe spokesperson also confirmed Underwoods performance of America the Beautiful, a patriotic anthem revered for Ray Charles iconic 1970s rendition. While some fans applauded her for promoting unity, others saw the move as a devastating shift, especially given Trumps contentious track record on LGBTQ+ rights.Platforms like X (formerly Twitter) filled with emotional reactions. Ive been to every one of your concerts. This is heartbreaking, one fan wrote. I thought you stood for love and acceptance, not hate and division. Another user declared, Blocking her on all apps. In a 2019 Guardian interview, she emphasized her reluctance to engage in politics publicly. I try to stay far out of politics if possible, at least in public, because nobody wins, she said. Her song The Bullet, released in 2018, was seen by some as a critique of gun violence. Underwood pushed back on the interpretation, explaining, It was more about the lives that were changed by something terrible happening.Despite her neutral stance, Underwood has taken the stage in politically charged moments before. At the 2017 Country Music Association Awards, she and Brad Paisley joked about Trumps social media antics with a parody of Before He Cheats, singing, Maybe next time, hell think before he tweets.LGBTQ+ Concerns Amid Trumps ReturnTrumps return to the political spotlight has reignited fears over anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
