WWW.OUT.COMLGBTQ+ publications are losing advertisers amid DEI purgeIt's not just individual companies or Pride celebrations even journalism is starting to suffer as conservatives wage war on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Brands are becoming increasingly reluctant to sponsor or work with LGBTQ+ publications amid anti-DEI campaigns, with several prominent outlets reporting loss of support from advertisers. Mark Berryhill, CEO of equalpride, the parent company of The Advocate, Out, and Pride.com, told The Guardian that companies recently may have been a little bit more cautious than they have been in the past.Weve tried to do a better job in this political climate of just selling the importance of our buying power, Berryhill said. Everybodys cautious and I dont think its just LGBTQ. I think theyre cautious in general right now with their work with minority owned companies."Tag Warner, CEO of Gay Times, revealed that the publication has lost 80 percent of its advertisers in the past year, as well as over $6.7 million in expected advertiser revenue. Executives at Amaliah, GUAP, and Stream Publishing, which publishes Attitude magazine, also reported facing hesitancy from brands recently though it didn't start with Donald Trump.Even before Trump's executive orders terminating all DEI positions in the federal government, dozens of major companies had already abandoned their practices. Many made their decisions after conservatives online specifically targeted them for their policies and threatened boycotts, with failed filmmaker turned failed congressional candidate Robby Starbuck taking credit for spearheading the movement.Many of the companies abandoning DEI also stopped sponsoring Juneteenth and Pride events. Heritage of Pride, the organization that produces New York Citys annual Pride events, previously had five "Platinum" donors those who had donated $175,000. This year, it has just one. Groups behind WorldPride, San Francisco Pride, Silicon Valley Pride, Oakland Pride, St. Louis Pride, Columbus Pride, Twin Cities Pride, and Toronto Pride have also reported losing sponsors.Research suggests that companies abandoning their inclusive practices may be acting hastily. Americans are twice as likely to buy or use a brand that supports LGBTQ+ rights, according to a GLAAD survey, and those ages 18 to 34 are over five times more likely to want to work at a company if it publicly supports LGBTQ+ rights.The one thing that maybe this whole controversy has helped us with a little bit is to really make brands realize its a business decision. Its not just a charity or something you should do because you feel guilty," Berryhill continued. "You should do it because its the right thing to support LGBTQ journalism. Were small. We need to get the word out. We have important stories to tell. But its also a good business decision. For decades, federal funds have supported access to preventive care, primary care, mental health services, housing, and lifesaving medications. Cutting HIV programs would greatly reduce access to care for people living with chronic conditions, low-income families, and uninsured communities across the country, notes a press release from the #SaveHIVFunding campaign.Muoz, best known for starring as Alexander Hamilton in Hamilton on Broadway, is a gay man who has been living with HIV for more than 20 years. He has long been an activist for LGBTQ+ rights, reducing HIV stigma, and funding HIV prevention and treatment.Peppermint, runner-up in season 9 of RuPauls Drag Race, is now starring in Netflixs Survival of the Thickest and has performed on Broadway in Head Over Heels, which made her the first out transgender woman to originate a principal role on Broadway. Friday will bring the reveal and presentation of the #SaveHIVFunding #CutsKill Quilt, featuring an interactive installation symbolizing the lives that will be affected by cuts to federal HIV programs.Programs fighting HIV and AIDS have a long history of bipartisan support. The proposed cuts could threaten the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the global program started by Republican President George W. Bush in 2003, which has saved an estimated 26 million lives; domestic programs funded through the Ryan White CARE Act; Medicaid, which provides health insurance for 40 percent of Americans living with HIV; and access to HIV prevention drugs in the strategy known as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP.Medicaid expansion has been associated with a 33 percent increase in PrEP prescriptions, but Medicaid cuts recently passed by Congress will reduce coverage and access to HIV care. It is supported by over 150 national and local organizations. WWW.OUT.COMThis transgender boxer is fighting to save his mentor and unlikely friend from ICE captivityNolan Hanson couldn't shake the feeling of "dread and doom" when his colleague didn't show up to work in March. Winter still gripped New York City when the boxer arrived at Gleason's Gym for one of his shifts, only to realize that another trainer and a dear friend of his was nowhere to be found. It wasn't like Talap Mamyrkanov to ditch work without notice, as Hanson says, "he was never sick, or even if he was sick, he would still come." If it were an appointment or other engagement, Hanson knew Mamyrkanov would have asked him to coach his fighters in his place. "I was looking at the clock and just really distracted the whole day. I knew something was wrong," Hanson tells The Advocate. "The next day I went on this website where you can look up people to see if they've been detained by ICE, and that's where I found him."Hanson, a transgender man, moved to Brooklyn in 2014 seeking a change from his home in Wisconsin. Mamyrkanov, who is Central Asian and Muslim, came to the city as an asylum seeker in 2019, fleeing religious and ethnic persecution in Russia. Both took roles as trainers at Gleason's as a way to meet new people while staying connected to the sport they love. While the two didn't have much in common on a surface level, their love of the sport spoke for them, with Hanson saying they "had that connection pretty much right away." Mamyrkanov, the only instructor at the gym who teaches in the Soviet boxing style, began imparting his knowledge to Hanson, and an unlikely friendship blossomed. "We're both incredibly serious about boxing, so that's something that unifies us," Hanson says. "He's also just incredibly friendly. He's one of the funniest people I've ever met. We would just crack up together. Maybe there's some part of it where we related as outsiders in the gym. He's the only Russian-speaking trainer, he's the only Central Asian coach there that teaches Soviet style, and I'm the only trans guy trainer. So, maybe there's something about being more on the periphery that connected us."Despite attending regularly scheduled check-ins with his immigration agent, Mamyrkanov was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at one of these meetings in March, and remains in their custody almost six months later, according to Hanson. While Hanson desperately tried to locate him, Mamyrkanov was moved from the city to New Jersey, and from New Jersey to upstate New York. He was then scheduled to be deported.While Russia's constitution states on paper that the country is secular and protects freedom of religion, reports from the U.S. State Department detail how the government persecutes religious groups by designating their services as extremist activities." Groups such as Jehovahs Witnesses, the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars, Hizb ut-Tahrir, Tablighi Jamaat, followers of Turkish Muslim theologian Said Nursi, the Church of Scientology, Falun Gong, and evangelical Protestants have routinely been subjected to imprisonment, torture, and asset seizure.With Hanson's help, Mamyrkanov was able to obtain an attorney who filed successful motions to stay his removal and reopen his original asylum case, which was dismissed in 2021. His case is set to be heard Wednesday, after which his colleague hopes he'll return to the gym. After Mamyrkanov worked hard to build his client base, Hanson says that "most of them are not coming" to the gym anymore. The loss of the beloved instructor has been particularly hard on his teenage students, who were just beginning to show an interest in boxing and have since fallen out of it. "Without him, they just don't really want to box," Hanson says. "It's traumatic, you know? I mean, you've got no preparation. He was just gone suddenly. It's been really difficult for them."Some of Mamyrkanov's students miss him so much that they've driven up to Buffalo to personally visit him in detention. Those who remain at the gym are now under the care of Hanson, who's trying to fill his mentor's shoes the best he can."I really miss him a lot," Hanson continues. "I've taken on a number of his students the ones that are still coming to the gym and training. My goal has been to keep the type of energy that he brought to the gym, and try to keep his fighters' intensity level and their activity level similar to what he had them at, so that when he comes out, they're ready to go and they don't deteriorate in his absence."Hanson and Mamyrkanov still talk regularly, though the latter isn't very forthcoming about his well-being. Mamyrkanov isn't one to complain, but Hanson knows that "he misses his life." While "he's really eager to get out of the detention center," Hanson also knows that "he's incredibly resilient.""He doesn't complain," Hanson explains. "I never knew anything Talap went through in his life ... He used to allude to difficult times or being poor, but he doesn't complain. So, I've asked him, 'Are you safe?' He says, 'Yes, I'm safe.' 'Are people treating you okay?' 'Yes, everybody's okay.' 'Do you have friends?' And he has a couple people that he talks with in there, but he says, 'This is jail.'"Hanson is also the subject of a coming-of-age documentary that's been filmed over the past five years for HiLo another project that's felt the weight of Mamyrkanov's absence. Hanson maintains that the gym, the documentary, and life in Brooklyn just won't be the same without his "insanely passionate and also incredibly disciplined, engaged" friend. "I'm just trying to spread the word to get as much support around his case as possible," Hanson says. "Anyone who is in a situation like his, they need a lot of support, and 99.999 percent of the people don't have it. So, I'm grateful to be able to try to help however I can, and I really have hope that he'll be free. I've helped clients come out at work, come out again after trauma, and come out for the very first time. In fact, I'm even scheduled to speak on the main stage at a conference for 500+ LGBTQ+ tech leaders this year.On paper, I look confident and settled in my identity. The truth? Every time I self-disclose, my heart rate spikes, and a shadow of fear creeps in.Earlier this year, our mailperson noticed the giant Pride flag hanging in the living room window. "I noticed your Pride flag," he said. My heart skipped a beat. I braced for impact and prepared for a fight. Then he smiled warmly and added, "Happy belated Pride Month!" I eventually smiled in return; after he left, it took several minutes for my body to re-enter the room, return to the present, and feel safe again. Despite how proud and confident I seem on the outside, it's still scary every time I choose to share my truth."Will this person accept me? How will this impact my business? Am I safe? Could they harm me?" These questions run through my head at light speed each time I choose to come out. When I came out to my parents during my senior year of high school, I thought I was over the hardest part.I was wrong.Coming out isn't a one-time declaration; it's a process. It's a lifelong journey of continually revealing one of the most sacred, tender parts of myself to other humansoften strangersand hoping they'll hold it with care rather than cast it aside.This journey is both deeply personal and wildly political. It's about survival, yes, but also about claiming space in a world that often tries to diminish, or entirely erase, queer lives. I see it every day in my work with queer leaders. One of my clients, a finance executive at a major tech company, still whispers every time he talks about his husband. Another, a successful media executive, refuses to mention her wife at work because she knows it could impact her career trajectory.Their experiences mirror mine and so many others'. Despite visibility and progress, the stakes are high and the fear is real.Most of the time, I'm met with acceptance or indifference. In the current political climate, the latter can feel like a real win. But sometimes, I'm met with hate and violence. A few days ago, when walking next door for ice cream, someone shouted, "Fucking faggot ass," as I entered the store. I hadn't said a word, yet their reflex was to hurl a hateful slur.This is precisely why I hung a gigantic Pride flag in our window. It's not because I'm brave. Honestly, I hate to admit it, but 15 years after coming out, I'm still terrified every single time I come out. I hung the flag because I refuse to shrink. I want to shine. I want my neighbors, my clients, and the world to know that I am who I am, and their words won't change that.But I must also say this: being seen as a queer person is incredibly complicated.It's not just about flying a flag or declaring your truth publicly. It's about the quiet, daily negotiations with safety and vulnerability you have to perform. It's about those times when you lower your voice or hide a part of yourself because you're unsure if the risk is worth the reward. It's about navigating the tension between wanting to be fully proud and visible and wanting to protect yourself from being broken.That tension is where courage and life liveand oh, it's fucking scary.At the end of the day, I want people to know: I am who I am, and their words won't change it. I am who I am, despite what they say. So, yes, I'm still scared to be seen. After 15 years, that hasn't changedand it might never change. I'd love to have a relationship (I haven't had one for over 20 years), but clearly that's not going to happen based on my current mental state. Any suggestions? D.Hey D., Im not privy to your therapy sessions, so I dont know what your current mental state is. A porn addiction can be tough, but it can be worked through with a therapist, and you have one. Thats great. Before I answer, I should say this: These questions about dating and sex about the people you want sex with, how you feel about them, and how you believe they see you are things you should bring to your therapist too. Babe, everyone ages. It is a fact of life. It is life. Its not fair that a person can be hedonistic and confident in their youth but later struggle in these arenas that the body gains some things and loses others on its course through life. Thats not fair. But thats the deal of living and the gift and beauty in it. To age well is to find ways to enjoy and appreciate the change. Aging means accepting the lesson that things do change that they are, in fact, constantly changing and always were, both in our bodies and in the world we live in. That means, in less fanciful terms, that even as you were being a slut, you were getting older you just didnt notice it so much and for whatever reason, you see it more now, and you feel like you cant be that slut again. You think the reasons why are purely external basic, skin-deep, physical looks and that hot young guys dont want you because they only want other hot, young guys. You know what? You might be right. If youre only seeing sexual value in guys who are young and hot, youre doing the same thing theyre doing to you: valuing them purely based on image. Youre allowed to, but so are they. It goes both ways. You might have to be willing to expand your field to include people who dont immediately trigger your desire to guys who dont look like porn stars, who just looknormal. And this might not happen right away: You might have to explore actively, make an effort, and try sex with different kinds of men. Can ones sexual interests (ones type or types) be expanded and changed? Absolutely no question. People do it every day. You are not bound to chase the type of men you chased in your 20s and 30s forever. My god, how boring that would be! There was a period in my life, some years ago, when I decided to actively explore sex with different kinds of people including heavier people, much older people, younger guys (until then, I was not interested in younger guys), and even women. Heres what I learned: Sex can be great with all kinds of people. Chubby guys, older guys, guys with average looks and average bodiesthe sex was just as likely to be awesome with them as with a hot young chiseled stud with an OnlyFans account. I even learned Im not even strictly gay I can enjoy sex with anyone, of any gender, if we have a good connection, good chemistry. These were valuable, beautiful insights about myself, garnered from a period in which I committed to expanding my taste something anyone can do. It just requires effort a willingness to talk, ask, face rejection, and explore sex with others. Cruising culture, in particular, is excellent for this. In-person cruising is so different from the filtered grid of Grindr. Sometimes youre horny and the only guy in the woods with his dick out is someone you would not choose on an app but hes there, youre there, and you both need to get off. Thats beautiful. Yes, there are risks to in-person cruising: risk of arrest, risk of danger. But the loveliest sex experiences of my life have been from cruising. In cruising the practice of it, the lifestyle a general sense of camaraderie, complicity, and gratitude prevails, and this sense often feels like love to me. Its a communal love for the men who wander into these places looking for fun men like me. Cruising culture is healing. Because, frankly, you need to try sex with people you dont immediately find attractive. Ive had incredible sex with men your age who, by Grindr standards, had average looks but they knew what to do, how its done, and how to make me feel good. Its sad to me that youre robbing yourself of these kinds of experiences by believing you wont enjoy them. One final, crucial question: How do you know the guys youre attracted to dont find you attractive? Have you asked them? All of them? Or are you making a general, sweeping assumption from a few rejections or, worse, from time spent on apps like Grindr? You cant crawl into the consciousness of anyone let alone a whole mass of people (like this general, disinterested hot guys populace you believe exists) and see how they view you. If people could do that, sex and dating would be easier, but we cant. You are trapped in your own mind and can only gauge others interest by what they say and do. It is wrong to assume everyone you put on the pedestal of super sexy will be disinterested in you: Thats projection. Thats your own internal judgement being projected onto them. You might have endured a few or more than a few rejections on Grindr. So have I. So have we all. Babe, get off Grindr. Go to a gay bar. Go to a cruisy darkroom, or gay sex club, or gay video arcade, or literally anywhere men are standing around, in person, checking each other out, and on the prowl. Nothing else has been said publicly since then, until now.In an interview with Out a week after the online debacle, Hearon discussed getting into his first online drama with none other than MrBeast, which he says he found "fucking funny" and didn't think too much of the whole situation."He reached out to me after he deleted the post to apologize, and I was just like, 'Dude, I thought it was funny. I didn't think you were wrong, and it made me laugh, so no worries, we're all good," Hearon tells Out. "I think people were too sensitive... he didn't know who I was and in his defense, if I spent my young adulthood building a 990 million follower platform and then I saw a fat, gay comedian listed above me on an influencer list, I'd probably ask some questions too."But Hearon assures his audience that the two have buried the nonexistent hatchet. "When he called to apologize, I told him that it was no big deal, we're all good and I wish you well."For those who don't know, MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, was ranked number seven on Rolling Stone's creator list. Hearon secured the sixth spot on the list beating out the world's most followed YouTuber. In an unexpected turn of events, MrBeast shared an X post arguing that he should've gotten a higher placement."According to this list, a guy with 1 million followers is more influential than me," MrBeast's since-deleted X post read. "What did I do to piss off the Rolling Stones?" In the same X post, MrBeast attached a screenshot of Hearon's placement on the list.The internet quickly rallied behind Hearon, an adored comedian, prompting the YouTuber to back down from his argument and delete that initial X post complaining about the ranking. The retailer also released a statement announcing an investigation into how a likeness of Mangione, who is currently jailed at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, made its way onto its site. (@) In a statement provided to BBC News, the company stated: "The image in question was provided by a third-party vendor and was removed immediately upon discovery. We have stringent standards for all listings on our platform. We are conducting a thorough investigation, strengthening our monitoring processes, and will take appropriate action against the vendor in line with our policies.It is still unclear whether or not the photo was artificially created via AI or Photoshop, but the brand vows to get to the bottom of this. Though the shirt is quickly selling out.Mangione has been imprisoned at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since December after he was arrested and was charged with the murder of Thompson. The crime took place in Midtown Manhattan on December 4 and Mangione was arrested five days later in Pennsylvania, where he was caught with a a fake ID, a handwritten manifesto criticizing the healthcare industry, a ghost gun, and a silencer.He's been charged with a number of charges including stalking, murder, and using a firearm with a silencer. However, ever since his arrest, the suspected shooter has become an internet darling. The more popular the case became, the more people began to dig up old photos of Mangione, there was fanfiction written about him on Archive of Our Own, and fan edits started popping up all over social media. Hemsley, who has been on a hiatus from social media since the announcement, reflected on his experience of coming out in such a public way, saying the "online trolls and degrading comments" were far outweighed by the many people who reached out with words and gestures of support. He also expressed solidarity for others in the community struggling with the decision to come out and welcomed the thousands of new followers that he's gained in the past week.The full post, which went up on September 2, reads:Last week altered my life in a way Ill never forget. WWW.OUT.COMJavier Muoz and Peppermint warn Congress 'we will be back to HIV wards' if funding is cutBefore Congress can cut crucial funding for HIV prevention and treatment, Broadway stars Javier Muoz and Peppermint are making them listen to the people who will be impacted.Muoz, best known for starring as Alexander Hamilton in Hamilton, and Peppermint, runner-up on season nine of RuPauls Drag Race and the first out transgender woman to originate a principal Broadway role in Head Over Heels, met with Democrat and Republican lawmakers alike on Wednesday afternoon to persuade them not to vote for a budget they warned will "eviscerate" government programs dedicated to HIV. For Muoz, an out gay man who has been living with HIV for over 20 years, it could be a matter of life or death. "This is not something that is outside of my existence or my life. This is my life, this is my health, this is my future," Muoz tells The Advocate. "This is my ability to actually maintain breathing and living and access to my treatment on a daily basis."The House Appropriations Committee recently released its FY26 funding bill, which would cut HIV treatment and prevention by $1.7 billion cuts much steeper than even those initially proposed by Donald Trump. This would revoke over $1 billion through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including $220 million from the president's Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) initiative.The proposed budget would slash the budget for the Ryan White CARE Act by 20 percent ($525 million), ending grants to over 400 clinics that provide care. It would also threaten the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the global program started by Republican President George W. Bush in 2003 which has saved an estimated 26 million lives; Medicaid, which provides health insurance for 40 percent of Americans living with HIV; and access to prevention drugs such as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP.This would destroy "any advancement, things that are on the horizon, things that might put us towards closer and closer towards ending this virus," as Muoz describes it; advancements such as combination therapies, one-pill-a-day treatments, and "the fact that I have no side effects with my medication.""They will put us back to where we started. We will be back to HIV wards AIDS wards in hospitals," Muoz says. "We will be dwindled down. We will watch our loved ones die again, and it is completely needless. We are in the position to do more and better, and it's inexcusable to even have these cuts on the table."The U.S. House of Representatives and Senate have not yet voted on the cuts, but must do so before the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30. Until that happens, Peppermint is urging others to "take advantage of these services while you have them" by utilizing the clinics near them and "routinely getting checked" for STDs. "After nearly 30 years living in New York City, I've really been proud of the things I've been able to do, and that is in huge part thanks to my being able to identify as a trans woman and have matching documents, matching paperwork, matching IDs, and then also the healthcare that I was able to utilize," Peppermint says. "The official line is that Satan has been 'traveling with' the president, and Trump insists he and Satan are 'just sort of hangin' out,'" The Hollywood Reporter's recap of the episode explains. And recently there were plans to hold performances of the show at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Though, those plans were ultimately canceled earlier this year after President Donald Trump ousted the Democratic members of the Kennedy Center's bipartisan board and made himself chairman.At the red carpet for the theatrical premiere of the proshot, which releases in cinemas nationwide on Friday, Lin-Manuel Miranda spoke with Out about the show's decision not to perform for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. "Well, in one sense, we were lucky in that we didn't have a contract in place, so there were no legal ramifications to us pulling out," Miranda said on the red carpet. "Morally, it was not complicated, because the Kennedy Center has historically been a bipartisan birthplace for the best of our nation's arts. Trump's administration politicized that when they fired the board and Trump named himself head of it."He added, "We were just not going to participate in that if we had the option not to, and I'm very thankful we have the option not to... WWW.OUT.COMHow 'John Proctor is the Villain's queer playwright found a Hollywood endingThe ending of John Proctor is the Villain a revisionist take on The Crucible set in a modern U.S. high school is a wallop straight to the heart. Its a cathartic culmination of the emotions these teen girls have carried with them throughout the entire show, soundtracked by Lordes Green Light. For eight shows a week, audiences left the theater having just experienced one of the most honest and vulnerable depictions of girlhood put to stage but on September 7, the show will close (after multiple extensions) and that will be the end of their stories at least for now.The Tony-nominated shows playwright, Kimberly Belflower, is still processing he emotions of what a wild ride the whole experience has been. I never dreamed that it would make it to Broadway, Belflower, reflecting on the shows success, tells Out in an interview the week that the show is closing. When Belflower was in high school, she and two of her friends made impossible lists in journals that her friend rediscovered recently, dreams they thought they could never achieve. On Belflowers list, there were two items: Have a show on Broadway and get nominated for a Tony check and check.So much of the show came from Belflowers own experiences. She hails from a similarly small town in Appalachian Georgia, and the characters are an amalgamation of herself and her friends growing up, tied into a modern setting of a post-MeToo cultural reckoning. The first drafts of the show, she explained, were written in collaboration with college students after being commissioned by the Farm Theater's College Collaboration project; Belflower says these students were her biggest resource in the early stages of writing. One of the shows protagonists, Shelby (originally portrayed by Sadie Sink), returns to school after a prolonged leave of absence. A revelation further upends the chaos that the town is already experiencing.Broadways progression in conversations about women, femmes, and feminism stalled around the 2010s, marked by the rise of girlbosses and a focus on basic feminist principles. Audiences love a female character righteously declaring, Women can do anything a man can do. John Proctor is The Villain cracks that idea wide open and puts the audience in a position to consider their own internalized biases, along with those of the characters on the stage.As Belflower began having more conversations with college students, she said she noticed that it was very easy for the young people she worked with to recognize Harvey Weinstein as a monster full stop. One day, she explained, she asked her class, What if these same allegations came out against Harry Styles? To the shock and horror of the young people she was talking to, they all wholeheartedly agreed that wouldnt happen. It sparked the opportunity to look deeper within herself and recognize that she wouldnt be a perfect feminist in those moments and it would really challenge a lot of things that I take for granted as my deeply held beliefs. This became the basis for her show, she said, because that naturally led into some more complicated, complex depictions and discussions of contemporary feminism. Belflower came out as queer in her late 20s, and she points to the fluidity of theater as a way to explore this other side of herself that she hadnt had the chance to explore when she was younger. She got the exposure to different types of people and different types of relationships, and I don't know if I ever would have fully come to terms with the spectrum of my sexuality if I didn't have theater," she says.Theres a moment where there may be an inkling of queerness in one of the shows protagonists, Raelynn, the preachers daughter (played by Amalia Yoo). In one scene, she catches herself talking about having a crush on Selena Gomez before she stops herself. Belflower says shes heard the criticisms that Raelynn's queerness is glossed over and dropped but she asserts that isnt the case. Raelynn wasnt ready to talk about it yet, the shows playwright explains, because at this stage in her life, she doesnt know that [shes queer] yet.Shes also seen the John Proctor fanfic that exists, where fans of the show have fictionalized a world in which Shelby and Raelynn are in love. I've always said that this is a love story about a female friendship, and I didnt mean love story like romantically, but I think there's absolutely a world where Raelynn, when she's 27 and is like Oh I might have been in love with Shelby.Before Sink left the show for her scheduled exit, Lorde had mentioned wanting to see the show after the two ran into each other at the Met Gala this year because she knows that her song is being used in it (she had to sign off on the rights). After one attempt of getting Lorde to the show (she had to inevitably cancel the first time), the singer DMed Belflower and told her she needed to come see the show before Sink leaves. The stars aligned, and she made her way to John Proctor. Belflower said Lorde seemed to be struggling for words after the show was over and told Belflower, Sorry, that was a lot for me. To which the playwright responded, But do you understand why it had to be your song? And Lorde said yes. See on Instagram I will never recover, Belflower said about the experience. But the same could be said about the show throughout its entire run. After three extensions, its coming to a close. But that doesnt spell the end of this plays story. In July, it was announced that the Broadway show was going to be adapted into a movie through Universal Pictures. The production is set to be executive produced by Sink with Marc Platt and Tina Fey serving as producers.There was a lot of interest from other producers, Belflower revealed, but Fey and Platt made the best offer and the 30 Rock legend has taken the playwright under her wings for this project. Belflower hasnt had a chance to write the script or think about casting just yet, but she is excited to expand the view outside of the classroom where the Broadway show takes place and get to focus on more intimate moments that are difficult to display on a Broadway stage.This show has become a cultural touchpoint for so many young people now, and Belflower has heard from them directly. I get a lot of young women, especially telling me things that have happened to them and things that they've had to live through and work through, she explains. I'm like both so honored that they trust me with that, and that my play helped them feel seen its very cool and great to get praise, but also I take it as a responsibility because I know that it's not necessarily even about me but really it's about what it cracked open in them and the play is kind of like this mirror in a way.John Proctor is the Villain closes Sunday, September 7 on Broadway. You're clearly very passionate about music, and very good at making it. Why did it take you this long to release your debut album?Nicky Doll: I wanted to make sure I would be proud of what I put out. I have worked for years on this project. Every time I was decided to release it, it wasn't good enough, and I would postpone.As a queer artist, I also wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting an opportunity, because we don't always have that many. It needed to be perfect, in my eyes, and I am extremely proud of it.The album title references the Greek gods Apollo and Artemis, who are twins. It feels like a reference to the lives of most drag artists who exist in these binaries of "male" or "female." But you tell me: Why did you choose APOLLO ARTEMIS as the name of your debut album?That is exactly it, but not just that. APOLLO ARTEMIS defines who I am as a whole. I not only have a duality in identity, gender expression, and emotions, but I also have a very light side and a dark side. I wanted to show that we don't have to pick and choose and that even my music project can have different sides to it. Apollo and Artemis are the divine twins, and I believe that [out-of-drag name] Karl and Nicky are also both, and coexist inside of me.Do you feel more connected to one of those sides at this point of your life? Or do you still feel a kinship to both Apollo and Artemis in equal amounts?Very good question! I think that, thanks to Nicky, I become a more powerful, complex, human being. Let's take it to the start: When and how were you invited to be a part of that moment, and was it a collaborative process?I was lucky to have been asked to be part of the Ceremony by the International Olympic Committee. Given my impact both in and out of the country, they wanted to showcase French people in its totality, and queerness is part of our culture. I was extremely thankful for the experience.If I had to do it again, I would in a heartbeat. The ignorance that followed which represented not even 15 percent of the reactions didn't affect me whatsoever. As queer people we're used to be pointed out and excluded from spaces. Not on my watch!What was it like to walk out of that performance I assume feeling amazing and seeing so much nonsense from conservatives?Walking out of that bridge was a surreal moment. We were all extremely proud to have lived this together. Regardless of the rain, regardless of some of the backlash, we were standing alongside other artists to represent our community, to show that we exist, our lives are valuable and that we are sickening!There's one specific man who made wild claims about the drag artists after seeing that performance in the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Olympics. He was previously sued by Crystal, of Drag Race UK, and lost the case to Crystal. Any update about your case?Indeed, one thing I wasn't going to tolerate was to be called a "pedophile." I think that this stigma is extremely toxic and has been weaponized to villainize homosexuals. If someone was going to use his platform to share that kind of ideas, I needed to show him that words have meaning. And that, if we fought for our rights, I intend to use them. As of now, there isn't update on the case, but I remain hopeful that justice will be served.See on InstagramI love how "naughty" and sensual the songs in the album are. But I wonder: Where are these vibes coming from? A romantic relationship that's spicing things up? Enjoying life, living it up, and meeting trade? Spill the tea, Nicky!Some songs definitely are spicy, but so am I! [laughs] I feel like I wanted to show all my sides in this project. You can find some disco, some electro, some dance, some pure pop. The performance of them are sometimes glamorous, sometimes over-the-top and theatrical, but also dangerous and sexual. It's a journey, and I'm glad people will embark on it.What is it about Seine City that made you want to create a song about it? It is also the closer of the entire album.I was doing a residency in Vegas for RuPaul's Drag Race Live!, and the song title just came to me. Sin City might be in the U.S., but Paris by night is just as naughty and exciting. So I wrote Seine City with Kalika who's an incredible hyper pop artist. And, who knows, maybe some visuals of that song are on the way? We shall see!This might be a little clich because a lot of people feel the same way, but "How Do I Look" is still my favorite song of the entire project. Why do you think "How Do I Look" is resonating so much with fans? Do you have a favorite song from this album?I think "How Do I Look" feels familiar; it's not overwhelming, and has an empowering message of self-love, which is why I wanted the lead single to be that song. We often seek validation elsewhere. Why not self-provide confidence and feel flawless at all times but for ourself, first?One of my personal favorites is "Come With Me," which is a song I wrote to my inner child. It was a very painful and cathartic song to write. I did it with two amazing souls: Lexxe and Florio. Apologizing to your inner child for leaving in order to come back stronger is something I think a lot of people can relate to. However, given the outpouring of love you have received since being on Drag Race season 12, and then hosting Drag Race France and being so incredibly successful on that platform, this song could also be about your relationship with the fans. What's take on the song?That is exactly what came to mind when I wrote this song. It was about the intense relationship I have with my fans. The adrenaline to go on stage and feel the energy sent right back at me when I'm performing. I also wanted to create an anthem of positivity god knows we need it right now.How does it feel to not go as far as you'd want to in season 12, but still build this stunning, powerful, enormous platform with Drag Race France, which is literally turning drag artists into huge superstars even the ones who don't win?I was always a wild cat. I always did things my way, and never really fit any mold. To be the host of a franchise feels correct, to be completely honest, because Drag Race is a succession of challenges that mimic what the industry can throw at you in the real world.I have worked relentlessly, and handled so many situations, that I inject some of that into my own franchise. I am incredibly proud to also show through my talented girls that winning isn't always the ultimate goal. Many contestants are killing it and didn't win their season Just like me!Is music something that you love doing and plan to continue making more of?
