Stephen Millers stance on LGBTQ+ rights: A comprehensive overview
Stephen Miller, a prominent political advisor who serves as President Donald Trumps White House deputy chief of staff for policy and U.S. Homeland Security advisor, has long been a controversial figure in American politics. Known for his hardline conservative views, Miller has used his right-wing advocacy group America First Legal (AFL) to spearhead numerous legal challenges aimed at rolling back protections and rights for LGBTQ+ individuals.Miller actively campaigns against what he perceives as woke agendas from schools and businesses, generally opposing any expansion of LGBTQ+ rights as illegal and harmful to women and children. As such, his presence in the White House has echoed Trumps anti-LGBTQ+ worldviews. Below is an overview of Millers positions on key LGBTQ+ issues. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Duke University in 2007. Millers political career began as a press secretary for U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and John Shadegg (R-AZ), followed by his role as communications director for Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL). In 2016, he joined Trumps presidential campaign as a senior policy advisor and speechwriter, contributing to key addresses, including Trumps inaugural speech. During Trumps first term, Miller served as Senior Advisor to the President, where he was instrumental in formulating and implementing stringent immigration policies, such as the travel ban targeting predominantly Muslim countries and the family separation policy at the U.S.-Mexico border. After Trumps initial tenure, Miller founded America First Legal (AFL), a conservative legal organization aimed at opposing progressive policies. In November 2024, President-elect Trump appointed Miller as Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and Homeland Security Advisor for his upcoming administration, signaling a continuation of hardline immigration stances. Millers stance on LGBTQ+ issuesAs the founder of America First Legal (AFL), Miller has been at the forefront of legal battles that often target LGBTQ+ rights and protections.Millers approach to LGBTQ+ issues is part of a larger strategy to combat what he calls radical progressive legal organizations. He views AFL as the long-awaited answer to the ACLU and promises relentless litigation and oversight to promote an America First agenda. Same-sex marriageWhile Stephen Miller hasnt been as vocal about same-sex marriage as he is about other LGBTQ+ issues, his overall approach to LGBTQ+ rights suggests he likely opposes it. Millers organization, AFL, has consistently taken legal actions against what they term woke policies, which often include initiatives to acknowledge LGBTQ+ people and their rights. Trans children in sportsMiller has been particularly outspoken against transgender participation in sports. He supported the passage of the so-called Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act,legislation that would ban trans students from playing sports at any federally funded schools and education programs. Miller said the law is necessary to block men from competing in womens sports. He hasaccused peoplewho support trans athletes of want[ing] men in their daughters sports leagues, locker rooms, and restrooms, heralding the end of womens sports and womens spaces and [supporting] the radical trans agenda and the erasure of women. Miller has also said that he believes that campaigning on this cross-cutting issue will help Republicans win elections. All but 2 Democrats vote to let men compete in womens sports. https://t.co/Mv3hnkUOGf Stephen Miller (@StephenM) January 14, 2025 Transgender access to public bathroomsThe AFL has repeatedly opposed policies that allow trans people to use restrooms and other facilities matching their gender identity. The AFL has said such policies are part of an outrageous assault on Americas women and girls that threatens their physical safety; essentially demonizing trans people as bathroom predators. Gender-affirming care for trans youthEven though almost all major American medical and psychological associations consider gender-affirming care to be safe, effective, and essential to trans childrens well-being, Millers organization has repeatedly referred to gender-affirming care as experimental chemical castration and genital mutilation and supported attempts by Republican attorneys general to obtain the private medical records of people seeking gender-affirming care. The AFL claims that gender-affirming care consists of horrific, life-altering procedures being pushed on children by a radical few all to advance an ideological agenda and so that unscrupulous doctors and others in the medical industry can make more money. In reality, many types of gender-affirming care are reversible and have been safely administered to trans and cisgender children for decades. Furthermore, the for-profit medical industry makes far more money off of all Americans from unethical and unregulated drug pricing, the Center for American Progress reports. Dont say gay/LGBTQ+ discussions in schoolsMiller and AFL have been supportive of legislation like Floridas Dont Say Gay law. In an April 2022 letter, Miller accused the Walt Disney Corporation of violating the law by opposing the states Dont Say Gay law, claiming the company supports the introduction of age-inappropriate sexual material in kindergarten classrooms, including radical gender ideology.Miller and the AFL have said that such laws are necessary for parents to protect their children from woke indoctrination. Miller has said of schools with LGBTQ+ inclusive policies, The extreme social gender experiments being forced onto small children are nothing short of government-directed child abuse and child sexual exploitation. He has also previously said that Republican officials and law enforcement should arrest people for abusing children with trans ideology. The AFL filed lawsuits against school districts and corporations that implement LGBTQ+-inclusive policies or curricula. Miller supports laws and policies that would force teachers to out trans and nonbinary students to their potentially unsupportive parents. Miller and AFL also support laws banning minors from seeing drag performers, though such laws have been struck down as free-speech violations. The Harris campaign has decided they want to fight a culture war this summer with the GOP. Their cultural priorities are:Sex changes for minorsDrag shows for kidsPornography in schoolsMen in womens sportsMen in girls restrooms and locker roomsrace-based everything Stephen Miller (@StephenM) July 30, 2024Discrimination protectionsMillers AFL has said that pro-trans policies seek to erase biological sex. The AFL has opposed interpreting laws against sex discrimination as being inclusive of trans people and gender identity. The AFL has also accused pro-LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations of being woke, left-wing, and anti-family institution[s] that [push] the lgbtq agenda and the transgender lie. The Democrat Party has declared war on women.Open borders.Crime.Men in womens sports, locker rooms, restrooms.Giving opportunities for women away to men in dresses.Forcing women to call men she.Ending legal protections for women by awarding them to confused men. Stephen Miller (@StephenM) October 2, 2024Other LGBTQ+ issuesMillers AFL has taken a broad stance against LGBTQ+ rights in general. Theyve filednumerous lawsuits targeting woke corporations like Mattel,Target, andBen & Jerrys that acknowledge LGBTQ+ existence or push for LGBTQ+ rights, includingcompanies that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts.Miller and the AFL have also opposed guidelines issued by the Department of Human and Health Services (HHS) under President Joe Biden that advise foster care organizations on how to handle LGBTQ+ youth. AFL has also called for an investigation into Navy Drag Queen Joshua Kelley for allegedly engaging in partisan politics, acting disrespectfully towards his superiors in public forums, bringing discredit upon the military through obscene social media posts, and wearing the uniform under circumstances that imply Navy endorsement of personal views and activity. Stephen Millers careerGraduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 2007Served as a press secretary for Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and Senator Jeff Sessions early in his careerDeveloped a reputation for anti-immigration policies while serving as communications director for Jeff SessionsBecame a senior policy advisor for Donald Trumps 2016 presidential campaign, helping shape hardline stances on immigration, including opposition to DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), a plan to delay the deportations of children who immigrated to the U.S. as childrenAppointed as Senior Advisor to the President in January 2017, playing a key role in drafting executive orders, including the controversial Muslim BanServed as the architect behind the zero tolerance family separation policy at the U.S.-Mexico border, leading to the separation of thousands of families in 2018Founded America First Legal in 2021, a conservative legal group described as a right-wing answer to the ACLUBecame a vocal critic of immigration reform and diversity initiatives in media appearances, frequently aligning with Trumpian and nationalist rhetoric The impact of Stephen Millers advocacy on LGBTQ+ rightsIn conclusion, Stephen Millers stance on LGBTQ+ issues is consistently oppositional. Through his work with America First Legal and his influence in conservative politics, Miller has positioned himself as a key figure in efforts to roll back LGBTQ+ rights and protections across various domains of American life.Stephen Millers approach to LGBTQ+ issues is emblematic of a broader conservative strategy to challenge progressive social policies. The 19 best LGBTQ+ songs of 2025
What was your favorite queer song of 2025?The Out team has been listening to the best queer music all year, and now, after announcing our favorite queer albums of the last 12 months, we're back to tell you our favorite queer songs!Last year, we counted songs from Tyler, the Creator, Doechii, Billie Eilish, and Chappell Roan as our favorites. Find out how many of those artists made this year's list below!'Abracadabra' - Lady GagaWhen the music video for this standout track from Gaga's latest album, Mayhem, had its surprise premiere during a commercial break during the 2025 Grammy Awards, the world stopped. The beat, the hook, the choreography... this is peak Gaga. Once again, she proved why she's the most creative pop star in the world.- Mey Rude'Crank' - SlayyterThere are songs that you hear the teaser of for the first time, and your body has a carnal desire to hear the whole thing. That was my reaction when I first heard CRANK by Slayyyter. This track is an explosion of synths, a throbbing bass, and Slayyyters indelible way with words. I was already excited about her upcoming third album, but after this song, CANNIBALISM!, and BEAT UP CHANEL$, Im exponentially more excited about her new project.- Moises Mendez II'Gnarly' - KatseyeWith out members Lara Raj and Megan, Katseye is one of our favorite young bands. The K-Pop-inspired global girl group exploded onto the pop charts and fans' hearts with the endlessly catchy, reference-heavy, dance-pop anthem "Gnarly." The music video also features some of the hottest choreography of the year, making us love the song even more.- MR'Folded' - KehlaniKehlani hasnt found the mainstream success shes deserved for years until the release of her song Folded earlier this year. The immensely talented R&B singer finally got their first top 10 single with this slinky, nostalgia-nodding tune about hoping to rekindle a romance that seems to have ended poorly. Her vocal delivery and the songs production is reminiscent of the early 2000s crooners that stole our hearts years ago and upgraded the sound for a modern audience.- MM'Cuntology 101' - Lambrini GirlsLaunching from zero to a million in one second, "Cuntology 101" is the punk rock response to the previously mentioned "Gnarly." British political punk band Lambrini Girls kick up the energy and the attitude in this blazing track that celebrates being yourself, feeling comfortable, being a slut, and neurodivergence. There's no other way to say it: This song is cunty.- MR'Polo' - Kim PetrasIt's a new day for Grammy-winning pop star Kim Petras! The German-born singer released several new tracks this year that indicate an exciting new era of revelation. Petras has never sounded better than on tracks like "I Like Ur Look" and the technotronic, cyberpunk-sexy "Polo." Working with trans producer Margo XS, Petras is becoming an icon of the digital age.- MR'The Subway' - Chappell RoanEver since Chappell Roan first performed The Subway at New Yorks Governors Ball in June 2024, her fans have been begging her to release the song as a single. She released Good Luck Babe and The Giver as singles following her massive year in the spotlight, closing out this star-making era with this hauntingly beautiful track about not being able to get over a love lost and the pain of trying to move on. Now that shes in a new relationship that shes kept quiet about, maybe the song could be about her mourning her old life, before the fame, the grueling touring schedules, and the social media fodder.- MM'Berghain' - Rosala ft. Bjork and Yves TumorRosala's latest album, LUX, is a symphony of sounds (literally) and features the singer singing in 14 languages across a wide range of musical genres. Never is the epic scope of the album more apparent than on the sprawling track "Berghain," where Swedish singer Bjrk and experimental artist Yves Tumor join her on the song, which begins with a symphony and choir before Rosala begins singing in an operatic style. The song transforms when Bjrk's otherworldly refrain of "the only way to save us is through divine intervention" comes in, and once again when Yves Tumor's haunting voice comes in, adding, "I'll fuck you till you love me."- MR'Kiss' - Demi LovatoDemi Lovato has done it all. Shes conquered genres from rock music to pop to Latin, but now she wants to take her fans with her to the club. The lead single off her latest album, Its Not That Deep, Fast was the perfect teaser for whats to come. While promoting that single, she stopped by a party where she played Kiss for the first time, and it was captured in a mesmerizing 28-second clip. It was the perfect marketing tactic for this new era, showing that the perfect place to listen to this song (and her new album) is in the club.- MM'Lemonade' - Maren MorrisMaren Morris is sweeter than ever on her latest album, but that doesn't mean she doesn't also have a bigger bite. In the song "Lemonade," she lets go of all her unneeded baggage, declaring, "You're a waste of lemons, a waste of limes / You're a waste of my present, a waste of my prime." With clever lyrics and a soothing melody, this is an empowering anthem for fed-up people everywhere.- MR'Hotbox' - Lil Nas XLil Nas X has had a tumultuous year, but before things took a turn, he put out an album called Dreamboy. The out rapper released the lead single Light Again in November 2024, but the single that really stole the show was Hotbox. The song samples Pharrell and Jay-Zs song Frontin, and he just slides all over this beat with his usual impressive rapping skills and charisma.- MM'Nosebleeds' - DoechiiIn Doechiis song Nosebleeds, the music cuts away, and you hear her say, Everybody wants to know what Doechii would do if she didnt win, I guess well never [know], which is a nod to Kanye Wests Grammy acceptance speech after he won for College Dropout. This surprise release was put out after this years Grammy Awards, where she became the third woman ever to win in the Best Rap Category for her mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal. Its a propulsive track backed by a menacing beat, threatening her haters to never doubt her because if they do, theyll feel her wrath.- MM'Vodka Cranberry' - Conan GrayIn a world of bland male popstars, Conan Gray stands out with this introspective and sensitive lyrics and disarming voice. On "Vodka Cranberry," he opens up about the heartbreak of keeping someone in your life who's not meant to be there. When the song reaches its emotional climax in the chorus, Gray sings about drunk-dialing his ex, a feeling most of us know all too well, and lays his emotions bare.- MR'Fineshyt' - AmaaraeOff her third album, Black Star, "Fineshyt" is an absolute bop from the Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae. When Charli XCX said she wants to hear the club classics, this is the type of song she's talking about. Amaarae is so enamored with her partner that she can't say no to her. "She's my fine shyt / I love her then I don't / She always on the phone / I give her what she want / My fine shyt," she sings in the earworm hook.- MR'Puta' - ArcaArca imagines a cyberpunk present in the Venezuelan producer's first solo material since 2022. It's choppy, dark, sensual, and steamy, perfect for losing yourself in a dark club or bedroom. If you want to feel like you're living in a future where everyone is in control of their bodies and sexualities, this is your perfect soundtrack.- MR'Big Ol' Hammer' - G FlipNonbinary Australian alt-rocker G Flip released their best album to date in 2025, and their song "Bed on Fire" could easily be on this list as well. Still, we're instead going to highlight the haughty and hilarious anthem of non-male masculinity, "Big Ol' Hammer." G Flip praises their partner for making them feel "like a mustang / like an alpha / In a toolbelt / with a big ol' hammer," and we can't help but agree. The music video starring Fortune Feimster and a dozen hot dykes and queers line-dancing in a garage is just the cherry on top.- MR'Clam Casino' - Chrissy ChlapeckaThe recent trend of lesbian pop stars dipping their toes into country (look at Chappell Roan's "The Giver" and Zolita's "Small Town Scandal" for examples) and Chrissy Chlapecka's "Clam Casino" is the most fun of them all! Filled with hilarious double entendres and a proud lesbian attitude, this song is a ready-made party anthem.- MR 'Leave Me Alone' - ReneRappIt felt like Rapp really came into her pop-star persona on her newest album, Bite Me, and the caustic, confrontational "Leave Me Alone" is a perfect summation of that. On the in-your-face track, she jokes about her lack of PR training, shades her former show The Sex Lives of College Girls, and declares that she just wants to be left alone to have fun. Sometimes, we feel the same way!- MR'worst behaviour' - kwn ft. KehlaniKwn is one of the few artists who can match Kehlani's sexy swag bar for bar, particularly on this song from her EP With All Due Respect. Cowritten with Sasha Keable, this smooth R&B track features an even sexier remix featuring Kehlani. If the song isn't enough for you, check out the sensual music video featuring one of the pairs in music and shibari suspension!- MR

Trump has put snitching & scapegoating back in fashion
A family story: Just before the beginning of World War II in my ancestral town of Krosno, Poland my great uncle, Inek Trenczer, courted and fell in love with a woman of the town, Malka Fruhman, and they decided to marry. Their plans, however, were abruptly and tragically interrupted when the Nazi German army invaded Poland on September 1, 1939.Inek and Malka, who were both Jewish, understood that they were both at great peril. Ineks Polish army unit was ordered to travel east to regroup and train before advancing on the superior German military. Related Trump is pushing several new big lies that will devastate the country The German Gestapo set up headquarters near Malkas family home. Officials issued orders to find all Jewish residents of the town. Officials also alerted Catholic residents to turn in all Jews, under direct threat of incarceration or death for all violators of the decree. The Jewish civilians of the town, including my Trenczer and Mahler family relatives, tried to escape Nazi troops by first fleeing east, but finding no safety, most either traveled back to their homes or tried to hide in the woods. Some implored their Catholic neighbors for a safe place to hide. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Malkas friend promised to shelter her, but, instead, walked one block down their street and alerted the Gestapo where she was hiding. Finding Malka, a Gestapo officer shot her right there on the spot.Malkas fianc, my Trenczer relative, following the Nazi evacuation of Krosno, returned looking for any surviving relatives and friends. When investigating whether Malka was still alive, he learned about the women who betrayed her. With profound grief and contempt as the only remaining emotions in his heart, he quietly walked up to the betrayer and shot a bullet directly into her head.War and loss had killed his own humanity. Surveillance is all about finding and denouncing scapegoatsSurveillance can bedefinedgenerally as the systematic finding, observing, and monitoring of a person, a specific group, or a location used primarily (but not exclusively) by governments for information-gathering, influencing, managing, or as a means of controlling. While democratic societies place restrictions on governmental and private surveillance to ensure reasonable levels of privacy, authoritarian governments rarely limit domestic privacy controls.Denunciation (fromLatindenuntiare, to denounce) is the act of publicly scapegoating a person or group by consigning blame for a perceived offence or for a social problem.Authoritarian statesrequire levels of cooperation from the larger population to successfully carry out their methods of control.Authoritarian officials employ two primary means to prompt this cooperation. Authorities useincentives, through coercion or the promise of rewards, to obtain denunciations from the public. Those who cooperate are termed informers. This was evident in the case of Malkas neighbor. Authorities also gain access to networks as individuals denounce or inform on one another with the promise of amnesty from consequences.A distinction must be made, though, between denunciation by aninformerand justified reporting by a whistleblower, the latter of which is someone who exposes misdeeds by a person, company, or government to avert dangers to the public. McCarthyism: Looks like witches are back in seasonSenator Joe McCarthy talking to closeted Republican operative Roy Cohn at his Army hearings. | Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division The term othering was coined by Nathaniel Mackey (1992) as an action verb that is something people do to turn the other from a noun to a verb. This othering thus minoritizes the other, which does not necessarily refer to numerical status, but, rather, indicates a social ranking within a socially constructed hierarchy.During the late 1930s and throughout the 1950s, some officials within the U.S. government set about to instill fear of communism in the U.S. and abroad.During the Cold War era following World War II, a brash and accusatory Wisconsin Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R) attempted to boost his political career by fomenting fear and paranoia when claiming that communism and communists surreptitiously were subverting the U.S. and its government. McCarthy initiated his radical plan in February 1950 when he provocatively claimed in a speech in Wheeling, West Virginia that 205 card-carrying Communists worked for the U.S. State Department. The surveillance of suspected communists in the government increased. In response to McCarthys allegations, Deputy Undersecretary of State John Peurifoy testified at a Senate appropriations committee meeting on February 28, 1950. He denied, on one hand, that his department hired communists, but, on the other hand, disclosed that several persons had been fired for being security risks, including 91 homosexuals. As a result, the surveillance of suspected homosexuals in the government increased. These disclosures set off a firestorm. Within one month, Republicans in Congress ordered investigations looking into the extent of the homosexual problem and the infiltration of sexual perverts in government. And the inquisition began. It is important to note that the Soviet government itself criminalized homosexuality under Joseph Stalin and blamed homosexuality on the West as a product of bourgeois decadence. The U.S. countered by blaming homosexuality on a Soviet Communist international godless conspiracy.Even prior to World War II, the House Committee on Un-American Activities(HUAC) was created in 1938 as a means of investigating and exposing suspected communists and communistsupporters in society. Its major attack later was on the Hollywood film industry.Blacklisting of Hollywood writers, actors, producers, directors, and others suspected of communist affiliation began with the committees hearings in October 1947, and it flourished throughout the 1950s. Senator McCarthy conducted witch hunts in an attempt to find and eliminate suspected communists. The Hollywood Ten, a group of distinguished writers and directors, were cited for contempt of Congress for not divulging the names of alleged communists in the film industry. They were jailed for failing to cooperate with the House committee and acting like informers. The individuals, who were persecuted during what is now referred to as the McCarthy Era, had their once prominent careers destroyed. They lost their friends and family on false rumors that spread about them, such as planning to start a revolution and attempting to overthrow the government of the United States. The Trump Administration and its GestapoAn officer with Immigration and Customs Enforcement | Shutterstock The authoritarian regime of President Donald J. Trump continues to exercise the weaponry of surveillance and denunciation in its campaign of control.Even before his first term, when he was running to be the Republican partys presidential standard bearer,Trumpannounced that if elected president, he would watch and study whether to increase surveillance on mosques because a lot of talk is going on at the mosques.Continuing during his takeover of the Oval Office, Trumps cries against Islamic jihadist terrorists and illegal aliens as the major threats to our nation and his calls to place U.S. Muslims on a national registry and surveillance to track their movements and the movements of illegal aliens increased his othering of these groups as the targets of blame for causing the United States major problems. Multi-billionaire Elon Musk through DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) served as an agency head of surveillance by collecting U.S. residents official and sensitive information, activities, associations, and spending habits without their consent.Trump has ordered unidentified and masked (primarily) men, and has substantially increased funding and expanded resources, scope, and number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers throughout the country. They have acted in ways that have contradicted Trumps promise of arresting undocumented immigrants who had committed criminal offenses. ICE officers have, instead, often arrested, detained, and disappeared people who have not committed crimes, and have deported them to foreign authoritarian countries (not of their birth), without due process of law. The U.S.Department of Homeland Security, under Secretary Kristi Noam, has become the Department of Surveillance and Rounding Up or the Department of Gestapo North America. Through I.C.E., it functions as a data collection and enforcement agency to hunt, surveille, arrest, and deport anyone with brown or black skin or who speaks Spanish: whether they are official U.S. citizens, or whether they are undocumented and have never committed any criminal offenses.Though an ICE public tip line has been around for nearly two decades for people to report criminal undocumented immigrants, it has expanded its outreach and scope. To identify the supposed crimes committed by prisoners in Nazi concentration camps, German officials instituted a coding system, which included affixing patches of differing colors to the prisoners uniforms: pink triangles for homosexuals, yellow Stars of David for Jews, red triangles for communists, and so on. Nazis used the blue triangle to distinguish prisons who were for emigrants, for example, German citizens who initially had left their homeland after the National Socialists came to power in 1933, but had then returned and were therefore suspected of espionage. The blue triangle was also forced onto the garments of foreign forced laborers, other immigrants to Germany who were not considered Aryan, and onto the so-called stateless.Donald Trump and members of his autocratic regime have imposed a virtual blue triangle onto the bodies of anyone not born in the United States. The regime is currently attempting to strip birthright citizenship status from anyone whose parents were not born there as well. The Trump administration has initiated the equivalent of a surveillance and denunciation website, entitled, Misleading. Biased. Exposed: Media Offender of the Week, on which it purportedly brings attention to what it deems as the biggest offenders of media bias. The sign atop the Washington Post building at night | Shutterstock The week I clicked onto the site, it accused theWashington Postof biased reporting on Department of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseths order to bomb small boats in the Caribbean:THE OFFENSE: The Washington Posts Alex Horton and Ellen Nakashima published an article from two unnamed sources claiming that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered a Joint Special Operations commander to kill everybody during an anti-terrorist operation in the Caribbean Sea.THE TRUTH: The Department of War killed 11 narco-terrorists in a coordinated strike designed to kill the narco-terrorists who are poisoning the American people. This attack was the first in a series of lethal kinetic strikes against Designated Terrorist Organizations. The Washington Post published this unsubstantiated claim in an attempt to discredit the United States warfighters and inflame anti-American sentiment. The administrations representation of itself is highly contentious at best since it has offered no verified proof that the people on the boat were actually transporting illicit drugs, that they were narco-terrorists, that they intended to go to the United States, that they were killed with any due process of law, and that the traditional methods of detaining alleged drug smugglers was by the U.S. Coast Guard through non-lethal means. As in other autocratic regimes, the Trump administration actively recruits ordinary citizens to report actions the state opposes. Denunciation requires an army of informants expected to collaborate in the collection of data and become complicit in state crimes to control criticism. The White House also launched its Media Bias Offender Tip Line, which asks members of the public to submit news stories they believe are biased, with the stated goal of holding the fake news accountable. President Trump issued theexecutive orderRestoring Truth and Sanity to American History. And in a January 21, 2025 federal government memorandum, Initial Guidance Regarding DEIA Executive Orders which repealed former President Joe Bidens order to increase Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility in the Federal Workforce. In this anti-DEI climate, a June 9 federal government memo to the National Parks Service (NPS), under Interior Secretary Doug Bergum, ordered signage posted throughout U.S. national parks asking visitors to report (denounce) any information they witness in the parks that in any way depicts the nation or its history in a negative way. The memo also reads in part: All NPS units are required to post signage that will encourage public feedback via QR code and other methods that are viable. The government also directed the National Park Service to conduct a review by mid-July 2025 of all images, descriptions, information, and other materials that could possibly belittle or denigrate the United States. In Trumps directive to Burgum, all Department of Interior websites must not inappropriately disparage Americans past or living (including persons living in colonial times), and instead focus on the greatness of the achievements and progress of the American people or, with respect to natural features, the beauty, abundance and grandeur of the American landscape. Some non-governmental organizations often conduct surveillance and denunciation campaigns. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a pro-Israel Jewish civil rights organization, led its Mamdani Monitor effort to scrutinize the language, actions, policies, and appointments of New York City mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani. As the first Muslim and person of South Asian descent elected to lead the nations largest city, which includes a Jewish population of well over 1 million people, Mamdani is also a critic of Israel and the Gaza war.According to ADL Director Jonathan Greenblat, theproject includestracking actions by Mamdanis administration that impact Jewish community safety and security. It also includes establishing a tip line for people to report antisemitic incidents in New York.We must ask ourselves, our governments, and our organizations some critical questions: Are these surveillance and denunciation actions justified for the general public good? Are at least some of them assaults on the publics rights regarding freedom of thought and ideas, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of and from religion, freedom of association, and generally, freedom to criticize?Do at least some of them take the country on the path toward a mafia-style autocratic state, and make those who denounce others complicit in state crimes? As we have seen throughout history, autocrats conduct surveillance campaigns and recruit informants against people who lack power. We the People, however, still retain the power to reverse this trend.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Jordan Firstman sorry for calling 'Heated Rivalry' sex 'not gay' after backlash
Jordan Firstman admitted he put his foot in his mouth regarding his critique of gay sex in Heated Rivalry.Earlier this week, the I Love LA star slammed the popular queer hockey romance as being inauthentic. "Im sorry, I watched those first two episodes of Heated Rivalry, and its just not gay. Its not how gay people fuck. Theres so few things that actually show gay sex," the actor told Vulture. As comparison, Firstman said a straight guy could not write" the gay sex scenes in his own HBO Max show starring Rachel Sennott even though Heated Rivalry's creator, Jacob Tierney, is gay.Firstman's remarks prompted some backlash online, including from Heated Rivalry star Franois Arnaud, who clapped back at the critique Friday in an Instagram comment. "Is there only one way to have 'authentic' gay sex on TV?" Arnaud asked. "Should the sex that closeted hockey players have look like the sex that sceney LA gay guys have?"On Saturday, Firstman expressed penance for his remarks in an Instagram Story. "I love Heated Rivalry and ultimately I'm a f*ggot who can't shut the fuck up but I'm gunna get better at that," he wrote.Criticism aside, fans can't get enough of Heated Rivalry, which is now a top-streamed show on HBO Max and has broken records for its original Canadian platform Crave. The show was just renewed for a second season.

Heated Rivalry: Trans actor Harrison Browne talks Scarlett Johansson, Jacob Tierney, 'sexy' hockey
Heated Rivalry episode 4 introduces fans to Connors: A pro hockey player who rooms with fellow teammate Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) and is played by Harrison Browne. While fans and critics engage in yet another intense discourse about straight actors vs. queer actors getting cast in certain roles, Browne enters Crave and HBO Max's hit new series as another male athlete on Ilya's team.In case you didn't know, Browne was an actual professional hockey player from 2015 to 2018 in the Premier Hockey Federation (formerly known as the National Women's Hockey League). By doing so, Browne became the "first openly transgender athlete in professional team sports in North America," The New York Times reports. In 2025, Browne published a non-fiction book with his sister, Rachel Browne, titled Let Us Play: Winning the Battle for Gender Diverse Athletes. He wrote, directed, and starred in his first-ever short film, Pink Light, which premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Now, he is reaching an even bigger audience as a Heated Rivalry star.Over the course of our conversation, Browne tells Out how he navigated each step within his coming-out story as a trans athlete, discusses his new short film Pink Light; recalls his casting process on Heated Rivalry, and teases a very exciting project currently in the works. Franco Lo Presti as Cliff Marleau, Connor Storrie as Ilya Rozanov, and Harrison Browne as Connors on Heated Rivalry season 1 episode 4.HBO Max/Crave CanadaOut: Many people were recently introduced to you through Heated Rivalry. How would you explain your coming-out story as a trans man who still competed as a pro hockey player after disclosing that information?Harrison Browne: I came out as the first out transgender athlete in professional team sports, That's the title that I would say it is. I played in the NWHL, which is now known as the PWHL, and I came out through an ESPN article in 2016.However, since I was playing women's hockey, I was beholden to anti-doping protocols. So, at first, all I could do was to come out socially. I was really embraced by the league at that time. Hockey is my entire life, so it was really nice to just be able to be myself while playing the sport. When did you start playing hockey?I actually started at nine, which is kind of late for a Canadian. I was a soccer player, but one of my best friends growing up, her dad was in the NHL, and I wanted to do everything that she was doing. So I tried it, and I just fell in love with the speed element of it and like being in a different environment, being in this cold rink and being able to just skate faster than I could run. It was just this whole other world that I could be part of. I loved it.You retired from professional hockey and started an acting career, which subsequently included honing in your skills as a writer and director. Your short film, Pink Light, is amazing and you're now on Heated Rivalry, one of the biggest shows of 2025. What was it like, to pivot that way?Yeah, it's not really the typical route that you see a lot of hockey players go to, right? [Laughs.] But I think it had a lot to do with my story and the media attention that I did receive.I was in some documentaries and had cameras following me around for about two years. I was also asked to do a lot of public speaking events. I was memorizing lines and doing all these things, but I had to retire because I wanted to physically transition. I couldn't live my life in this limbo anymore. However, when I did retire, I didn't know what to do with my life. I was losing my identity as an athlete who had played hockey for 16 years, day in and day out. Suddenly, I just had all of this free time. Nobody telling me what to do, which diet to follow, or even where to be. I was really stuck in figuring out what I wanted to do with my life. And then Scarlett Johansson almost played a trans man. Harrison Browne as Scott in Pink Light.Toronto Film FestivalOh!When that happened, I saw an opportunity for a trans story to be told, but it got squashed. I didn't know any trans man, especially one who was an actor. Elliot Page hadn't come out at that time. I saw this gap in the market, I knew I was comfortable in front of the camera, and I knew I'm comfortable memorizing lines. So I just started to take acting classes.I didn't think I was going to be Scarlett Johansson-level of acting right off the bat, but I know what training is. I know what it takes to learn a skill and commit to something. So I just dove in and didn't look back. It's pretty crazy to think that that little decision, and Scarlett Johansson, were these little sparks that shot it off. That controversy happened around "the tipping point" which was really epitomized, I think, with Laverne Cox on Time magazine. We had many exciting and queer-inclusive shows like Orange Is the New Black, and Pose, and the excellent documentary Disclosure also came out around that time on Netflix. Going into showbiz, did you know that it was unfortunately going to be an even bigger challenge for a trans male actor to get cast and break through?Growing up, I can point to Boys Don't Cry as the only thing I saw that seemed like it represented a future for me... and that was really bleak. I wanted to challenge the entertainment industry. We need three-dimensional trans representation, and having them in stories that aren't just about transitioning, too. Stories that show an adult who's past that point in their life. There's so much more than just the transition aspect of it. I just really wanted to create that for myself. For somebody, looking in, who needed to see it at a younger age.RELATED: Trace Lysette's performance in Monica was breathtaking and absolutely deserved an OscarI knew that there wasn't a lot of trans masculine representation; there was a big gap in that. But I didn't see it as a challenge, I saw it as an opportunity, because I saw firsthand how much my representation in sports meant to people who were looking in. I get messages on social media all the time from parents concerned about their child, and even young adults who are still struggling. The messages are usually like, "Seeing you be yourself really helped me."Athletes have always told me about all of these grateful, and sweet, or intense messages they get from fans. It also seems like this comes from all kinds of senders: Young folks who feel seen, or a kid's parents, or even young adults. Representing the LGBTQ+ community in sports feels even more intense than most other public-facing careers. How do you navigate those messages that, while important, and sweet, can also be pretty heavy, and heartbreaking? It can be very heavy. Especially after the recent election and what's going on in the States, it's been tough to stay positive and to protect your mental health in that space. I feel a lot of empathy towards kids that are being barred from playing sports, and who are being barred from medical care, and parents that have to deal with this... just so much hate and negative rhetoric that's happening around trans individuals. What hurts me the most is thinking about kids who won't be able to play sports, because I then think about how much sports meant to me. Sports saved my life. It was a space that I could identify as an athlete. It was a space that I didn't have to "be a woman," or have to identify as a man, or anything like that. It was just a gender-neutral space that I could be free with my friends, and make memories, and build confidence. I don't know where I would be without that. It's hard for me to hear from young people like, "I don't know what to do," because I felt pretty helpless in some spaces, too. But I always try to respond to as many [messages] as I can, and speak on my own perspective, and just send messages of support and hope. That's all we can really do right now. Harrison Browne as Scott in Pink Light.Toronto Film FestivalUltimately, I wanted to do something about what's happening in the States: This conversation around trans athletes in particular. So I teamed up with my sister to write a book called Let Us Play: Winning the Battle for Gender Diverse Athletes. It explores things we can tangibly do, like debunk myths, interrogate what's happening in the media, show facts, stats, and really fight for this community. Also, accepting what I can't do in this moment has helped me a lot, because I felt really helpless at times. I didn't know how to fix things, or make things better, for people.Doing that within my own circle... I found a lot of comfort in that. I know that it's been helpful for youth and parents who have read the book, too. Many gay athletes have struggled with "locker-room talk" over the years, with the broad understanding of that term is connected to cis straight men boasting about themselves and speaking negatively about women. Was there, perhaps, a different version of that in your league? Did you feel comfortable coming out as a trans man to your teammates?Women's hockey, in particular, has been such a safe space for me. I can only speak to my own experiences within locker rooms, but have look in on the PWHL right now Players date each other. Players have short hair. Players really go out of the gender binary, and really fight for themselves to be able to express themselves in the way that they want to be. They don't even need to identify in the LGBTQ+ community just a strong woman who wants to be muscular and wants to break down these ideas of what masculinity means, or what femininity means.Within women's hockey locker rooms, I think most people can understand what discrimination is. Most people can understand what it's like to be judged based on who you are, and what you're capable of doing, and being put into boxes means. For me, most of our dressing rooms were like 50 percent gay, 50 percent straight. I didn't know many trans athletes growing up, and I didn't encounter any out transgender individuals while I was playing, but I knew that most people in the league understood the LGBTQ+ community. Harrison Browne as Scott in Pink Light.Toronto Film FestivalAnd, with hockey, we're all called our last names, or nicknames, anyway. I didn't have to deal with "my birth name that I wasn't really connected with." I could just be Brownie within those spaces, 'cause my last name is Browne, and Brownie was my nickname.I just told them one day, "Hey, I'm still the same Brownie, but can you use he/him pronouns?" And everybody was like, "Yeah, absolutely." Mistakes occasionally happen because it is a gendered space. So there's a lot of "let's go girls" and "let's go ladies." But that's okay, it happens. You don't want people to walk around on eggshells. My teammates and coaches in the [formerly named] NWHL always wanted to make sure that I was feeling the most included that I could possibly be. I didn't have many negative experiences through coming out, and I wasn't worried about coming out in that environment. At this point in time, I think many straight, cis people can understand the concept of queer people having to come out several times, at different points there are relatives and personal friends, there are peers and colleagues, and eventually you might come out to the public. If you're comfortable discussing it, how did that timeline look for you?So I came out publicly in 2016, when I was playing the NWHL. But I had come out in college, already, I think either my sophomore or junior year. I was probably 20 years old when I came out to my teammates at that time. I was always known in the women's hockey world as "the trans man playing on the team," it just wasn't public knowledge at that point. But I did come out four years prior to coming out publicly [as a professional athlete]. See on Instagram Over the years, I did have moments of deep fear. Like, "How are people going to accept me for being a man when I don't look like one, or when I don't sound like one?" But I always had the support of at least one or two of my teammates that I could disclose things and could really feel comforted. First comforted by them, and then when coming out on a larger scale. It wasn't just like, "Here I am!" [Laughs.] It took a while to feel comfortable in my own skin and even accept myself. But yeah, I am very fortunate to have had the reception that I had.Pink Light is a very cool short film that you wrote, directed, and starred in. The project centers a former pro hockey player who "time travels back to his per-transitioned self, when he was waiting for life to begin" (via Mubi). What inspired you to make Pink Light, and how did the actual short film come about? It really came from feeling a bit frustrated at the types of trans characters that I was auditioning for, and not feeling like I was getting the opportunities that I wanted to tell a really deep trans story. So I was like, "Well, I gotta create this myself." Then, when it came down to writing it and directing it, I started to really fall in love with that process. The process of directing, in particular, I didn't realize that I would really enjoy.Acting is really subjective. And that, to me, is sometimes elusive. To be like, "What are we doing in this space?" That amount of control is not there, for the most part. But directing is this space where I actually felt like I was playing hockey. I don't know how to explain it! [Laughs.] But I had this control, and these teammates that I was able to work with, and we all had different roles that we were playing; different things that we had to achieve. The person who played the younger version of me, CJ Jackson, is this really popular player in the PWHL, and an amazing actor, too. Pink Light was their first time acting. And CJ also related to it feeling a hockey game. I was like, "I know." Both of us had that similar kind of feel. See on Instagram I've always loved those abstract conclusions, and observations, and conversations that we can have between collaborators in a creative process. And finding common ground is exciting, but I even love to just hear someone trying to make sense of things and explain something that they haven't figured out yet. Feeling vulnerable about something and still wanting to figure it out with other people is magical, but we keep getting fewer chances to do that with one another. I think that's why we need the specificity of things to be explored in a project like Pink Light. I really wanted to create something that I wish I had seen when I was younger. People don't know what it is like... Dealing with this stuff A lot of people have been talking about trans athletes. And I was like, "You don't understand what being trans, and being an athlete, and having to have these juxtaposing identities, feels like."I wanted to give a voice to this community that's being talked about ad nauseam right now, and create something that I really needed to see when I was struggling with sticking with my sport and accepting myself.Hearing you say that reminds me of Elliot Page who also went in the direction of producing, and directing, after finishing his run on The Umbrella Academy. He was clearly very grateful for the show immediately changing things up to honor, and celebrate, and reflect his coming out as trans. But once that wrapped, I think we all identified he had this new curiosity to pursue his own stories.Yeah, I think there's a really big power in taking back the narrative, and taking back storytelling, for your own community especially when lots of people have been doing it for us. Why are we letting people tell our stories when we are more than capable of doing it? This has been a really empowering experience for me.RELATED: There are no out NHL players. Could Heated Rivalry change that?I'm in the process of developing a feature and we just got funding for a portion of it. It has empowered me to feel, especially as an actor, to not feel like I have to wait for something. It's really been life-changing.And that feature is the longer version of the Pink Light short, right?Yes! So we premiered at TIFF in September, which was really amazing. We had a couple of production companies asking, like, "What's next? We want more from this." And most of the audience, even, was like, "We want more. There's 10 minutes; it's too short."So, yes, the feature is a continuation of it that lives more in the past version. We dig deeper into college hockey, and the NCAA hockey, and being a trans athlete, and figuring out how you navigate those spaces while really celebrating the queer community within women's hockey as well. Franco Lo Presti as Cliff Marleau and Harrison Browne as Connors on Heated Rivalry season 1 episode 4.HBO Max/Crave Canada Let's talk Heated Rivalry. Given your legacy in professional hockey, and your pursuit of an acting career, did producers approach you to be in it? Did you audition?I just auditioned. Obviously, being a hockey player, that's one of my niches. Anytime that there's a hockey movie or hockey TV show, I'm usually seen for it. But this is the first time that I've ever landed one. And to play an NHLer or MHLer, 'cause they renamed the league has been an amazing experience for me to not feel imposter syndrome. It's been so interesting for me to feel that way through acting. I think everybody can relate to the physical nature and the optics of what acting is. And so, myself, I'm 5'4". I am not a large person. I'm muscular, I'm fit, and I know how to play hockey, but I don't necessarily read as a hockey player to somebody watching a TV show. They're like, "Oh that guy's too short," or whatever.I've felt a lot of imposter syndrome, going out for these roles, and the breakdowns are like 6'3", really large, big stature. I'm not that. I really tried to think what the casting directors would want to see out of a male hockey player, and I tried to conform myself to their idea of that character. Heated Rivalry was one of the first times when I just showed up as myself. There are many short men in the NHL. There's Martin St. Louis. There's Nathan Gerbe, who used to play.I'm not an authority on hockey, but that stature sounds wild. I mean, this isn't basketball.Right! And it's even skewing more to smaller players now that there's not as much physicality. So I just took that out of the narrative and decided to just be myself. I have a large breadth of hockey experience that I think can be really good for a television show with this nature.I auditioned for a character, and I didn't land that character. But Jacob Tierney [Heated Rivalry showrunner] reached out to my agents and said, "I want to offer him this other character." I was just like, "Absolutely, that sounds amazing."To be included in that, and to just hear, hands-down, like, "We got you because you're a good actor and you're an amazing hockey player. Not because you're trans." That was a really affirming experience for me. Connor Storrie as Ilya Rozanov; Harrison Browne as Connors on Heated Rivalry season 1 episode 4.HBO Max/Crave CanadaI love Jacob Tierney's approach to the casting process of Heated Rivalry as going beyond the just "checking of boxes." But between writing a book, starting a brand-new career in acting, and going on to direct your first short film (Pink Light) all projects created by you, a history-making Canadian trans athlete, and created for other people in the LGBTQ+ community it's just very exciting to see you included on the show, which is super popular, and queer, and has a gay showrunner, and has queer love story at the center. An out trans man who made history as a professional hockey athlete, and who is now an actor, director, and writer himself, is included on this show. I know it's not the sole reason, but it also just feels so meaningful.Yeah, the representation for that, for people who know my story and are looking in, it will be pretty amazing. And to have the show picked up by HBO Max. It's getting so much attention. To be part of it is a true honor. Jacob really just ran an amazing set. Him casting me I'm really happy to be part of this. I have a lot of respect for him.Even the supporting actors are standing out so much on this show. It's gotten so big. What is your reaction to this response that the show is getting? It's amazing. I am really blown away by it, and I think it's a crucial story right now, too. The conversation around LGBTQ+ representation on the men's side is in a big reckoning right now with the banning of Pride Tape, and what's happened in Pride Night games, so this is a really great story to spark even more conversations. Also, it's really nice to see hockey be "sexy," you know? Hockey is an amazing sport that I think deserves way more attention. The response to Heated Rivalry gives me a lot of hope. There's an audience for my stories, and the things that I want to tell. And that's epic.Heated Rivalry season 1 is streaming weekly new episodes every Friday on HBO Max.

Expert says Dems have once-in-a-generation chance to flip hundreds of seats across the nation
Sweeping Democratic victories in off-year elections seem to be foreshadowing a very good midterms for the party, and one expert believes its even bigger than that. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fundamentally transform legislative power, Heather Williams, president of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC), which focuses on electing Democrats to statehouses, told Mother Jones. Related Dems historic performance in deep red district an ominous sign for the GOP: We changed the story This is more than a potential repeat of the 2018 blue wave, Williams added. We are looking at the makings of an environment that looks more like 2010 in reverse. In 2010, the publication explains, Republicans gained almost 700 seats and flipped 22 legislative chambers nationwide. The party also took power during critical redistricting years, allowing it to continue its reign. And in many races, Democrats won by such large margins that news organizations declared winners within minutes of polls closing. This is as big as it gets, saidMSNBC host Joe Scarborough at the time.Just this week, Miami elected its first Democratic mayor in almost thirty years. House Republicans haggle on trans rights while Trump insults history-making woman
Marjorie Taylor Greene says that GOP leadership promised theyd have the House vote on her anti-trans bill next weekThe trade: House Republican leadership made several deals with hardline Republican members to get their votes for the military appropriations bill this week, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) says that one of the promises made was to hold a vote on her bill to ban gender-affirming care for trans minors, something she has been pushing for years without much success. Why it matters: Families of trans kids have been fleeing red states for years as they enact tougher policies attacking their rights. If this bill passes, doctors could be thrown in prison for providing safe and effective health care no matter what state they practice in. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) was outraged that some of the anti-trans riders in the 2026 NDAA were removed in order to get it passed by both the House and the Senate. She said the bill still forces women in our military to compete against (and shower with) biological men pretending to be women. Why it matters: Even though Republicans control everything at the federal level, defenders of LGBTQ+ equality are still able to eke out small victories like this one, taking the teeth out of a college-level sports ban. After she spent years working to help Americans stay healthy, the Trump administration changed the name on her official portrait to her deadname as a petty insult. Why it matters: The Trump administration can try to dress up their anti-trans policies as protecting women or protecting children or whatever, but fundamentally, this incident shows that they have antipathy for a historically oppressed minority. University dismisses 2nd professor in kerfuffle over anti-trans students essay Anti-LGBTQ+ activist allegedly hired two men to kidnap her developmentally disabled daughter to teach her what evil isIt was harrowing: Authorities believe Tammi Hamby hired the two men who drove her daughter to a field, zip-tied her wrists to a tree, and then demanded money from her, all while the mom watched. The daughter escaped to a nearby house, where residents called 911.Why it matters: Hambys activism focused on removing LGBTQ+ books from libraries because she claimed those books groomed children by exposing them to ideas their parents dont want them to be exposed to. Rosie ODonnell says shes loving life in exile
In January, gay comedian Rosie ODonnell pulled up stakes and moved to Ireland. She was looking to escape the mental jail in which Donald Trump locked her during his first term in office, and where he threatened to put her again in his second, along with deporting her. Trump was playing PR flack John Baron to promote himself on Page Six and tabloid TV shows like Inside Edition. They finally came to blows in 2006, when ODonnell traded her Queen of Nice persona for liberal attack dog in her first outing as a host on The View. Trump was a ratings hit by then on The Apprentice, and gaudy, easy prey for ODonnell, who mocked his hair, called him bankrupt, and compared him to snake oil salesmen.Left the first wife, had an affair; left the second wife, had an affair. NDAA votes prove that trans peoples lives are simply a political bargaining chip for the GOP
Weve known for some time that the rise of anti-trans politics in the Republican Party was likely an intentional tactic devised by political strategists in backrooms. But the recent events in Washington, D.C., and the eventual passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) bring the craven nature of those moves out into the light. In the wake of same-sex marriage being legalized nationwide by the Supreme Court in 2015, Republicans needed another minority rights issue to get their base angry over. The growing mainstream awareness of trans people at the time played perfectly for those goals, and that move is evident in the escalation of anti-trans bills since 2015. Related The anti-trans movement is sadly going to outlive Trumps presidency Prior to the government shutdown at the end of September, the appropriations bills that conservatives in the Republican-controlled Congress were putting forward included a wealth of anti-trans riders. Six amendments were added to the 2026 NDAA, the $900 billion military funding bill, on September 10 that would have restricted gender-affirming care for service members and their families, banned trans women from sports, banned trans people from using the restroom at military facilities, removed gender identity questions from military surveys, and banned Pride flags. While that speaks to a strong anti-trans sentiment, it appears that Republicans may have largely included them partially to satisfy the anti-trans extremists in the party and to represent something they could give up during deal-making with the Democrats. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today By the time the government was steaming towards a shutdown and stopgap bills, or continuing resolutions, were being considered, all of those anti-trans riders had evaporated. Republicans seemed ready to drop them as a way to push through other appropriations and to focus on ensuring Obamacare subsidies expired, forcing up healthcare prices for many Americans. The big fear was that once the government was reopened, new appropriations bills would include all those anti-trans clauses. That fear was clearly well-founded. The NDAA once again included a ban on Defense Department resources going towards gender-affirming surgeries, a ban on trans women taking part in programs or activities at the military service academies that are designated for women or girls, and other anti-diversity language. But this past week, deal-making prior to the bill passing on Wednesday resulted in those anti-trans clauses being attenuated. The restrictions on gender-affirming healthcare were removed entirely, and the sports ban was altered to only affect those enrolled in the military academy, not visiting teams. That wasnt a total win, but it was a big step in the right direction. We dont know what they gave up to remove those anti-trans riders, but it seems the president and House Republicans might not be as deeply invested as theyd like us to believe. What we do know, however, is what bargaining chip was handed over to at least one representative to secure a yes vote on the NDAA.Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) heavily criticized the NDAA bill for its massive spending of taxpayer money in ways that wouldnt actually help American citizens, tweeting, These American People are $38 Trillion in debt, suffering from an affordability crisis, on the verge of a healthcare crisis, and credit card debt is at an all time high. Funding foreign aid and foreign wars is America Last and is beyond excuse anymore. This week we are voting on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that funds our military and its, once again, filled with Americans hard earned tax dollars used to fund foreign aid and foreign countrys wars. These American People are $38 Trillion in debt, suffering pic.twitter.com/Rgbcrvy7aY Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (@RepMTG) December 8, 2025However, she changed her no to a yes, and not because she suddenly thought the bill was worthwhile. She revealed this week that all it cost was a promise from House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) that her pet project bill would get a vote on the House floor on December 17.The Protect Childrens Innocence Act, Greenes bill, is not about protecting children. It is a massive gender-affirming care ban for trans youth, which would allow for doctors and parents alike to be charged with a felony for providing minors with gender-affirming healthcare.Greene has been pushing this bill for years, while a near-identical measure has been proposed multiple times in the Senate with a list of co-sponsors that has included JD Vance. However, it has never actually been put to a vote. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has claimed to support such a ban in the past, but has either been focused on other matters, didnt think it would pass, or has been holding this anti-trans bill as a bargaining chip to spend when he needed Greenes vote one day. Now, Greenes vanity project is suddenly getting a vote, just as shes on her way out the door. Not because of its merits as a bill, nor because Republicans agreed with the anti-trans aims, but because that vote was traded for her agreement to help pass the NDAA.Greenes bill is unlikely to pass, but it will allow her to say she did what she promised, and she can blame Capitol Hill for it not becoming law. It all emboldens anti-trans hate in the name of political maneuvering without a care for what is actually said.California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) spoke this week about how much pro-trans legislation he has passed in the state. He also said that he didnt support trans inclusion in sports, noting that his disagreement comes from his heart, and that it wasnt a political decision.Hes wrong about denying trans children inclusion in school sports, and he knows that its not a politically good position to take. But when Republicans are hating us because their strategists tell them to, theres perhaps something refreshing (if depressing and annoying) about someone genuinely believing in something rather than being guided by cynical positioning. Donald Trump calls reporter dramatic for saying Americans will suffer if health care prices rise
During an interview with Politico, Donald Trump snapped at a reporter for reminding him that the expiration of Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies will have an immediate effect on American families. Dont be dramatic, he told her, more than once. Related Donald Trump calls reporter obnoxious & terrible for repeating his own words back to him Reporter Dasha Burns pressed Trump on whether he would try to strike a deal to extend ACA subsidies before they expire in two weeks, which will cause healthcare premiums to skyrocket for many Americans.Trump said he didnt know yet and continued to ramble about not wanting insurance companies to get any money and just wanting to give money straight to the American people so they could buy their own health care. Right now, people are buying their holiday presents, Burns said. Theyre planning for At that, Trump interrupted her. Dont be dramatic, he groaned. Dont be dramatic. No, no, Burns pushed. Theyre planning their budgets for next year, Mr. President. Trump continued to ramble about his vague plan. Im giving them money, he said. I want to give the money to the people to buy their own health care. Thats a good thing, not a bad thing. He said again he wants to let the people to go out and buy their own health care. It works like magic, he said. Burns kept emphasizing that in the short term, premiums would still go up, and Trump simply replied that he would give money to the people. The subsidies were the reason behind the recent 43-day-long federal government shutdown, the longest in American history. Democrats would not approve a budget bill until Republicans agreed to renew the subsidies. Republicans refused to even negotiate.Ultimately, enough Democrats voted alongside Republicans on a deal to end the shutdown that did not include an extension of the health care subsidies they had been fighting for.Without the subsidies, some peoples health care premiums are set to increase by thousands of dollars per person, according to a KFF analysis, with older Americans who are nearing retirement being disproportionately affected. This will likely result in people dropping insurance coverage, increasing health care costs for everyone (as the pool of people paying into health care shrinks). Others will face severe hardship if they have a health issue without insurance to cover it.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Cis Squid Game actor says he didnt want his trans character to be a caricature
South Korean actor Park Sung-hoon is opening up about his approach to his transgender character in the second season Squid Game.Netflixs hit thriller series drew criticism last month when it was revealed that the cisgender Park had been cast in the role of Hyun-ju, a former special forces soldier and transgender woman. Critics have long argued that apart from denying trans actresses work, casting cisgender men to play trans women reinforces the anti-trans perception that trans women are really men. That insidious belief is not only at the heart of efforts to deny trans women access to public bathrooms, changing rooms, and shelters, but can also lead to violence against them. Related Squid Game creator says it was impossible to cast a trans actor as season twos trans character While Park did not directly address the backlash, he noted in a January 8 interview with local reporters that he approached the role with caution, and consulted with actual trans people in an effort to make sure Hyun-ju would not come off as a caricature, according to Korea JoongAng Daily, the English language edition of South Korean daily newspaper JoongAng Ilbo. Subscribe to our Newsletter today I never wanted to overdo the voice or exaggerate my gestures, and [Squid Game creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk] fully agreed with me on that, Park said. Since my natural voice is quite deep, I felt that altering it too much would undermine the emotional authenticity.Park went on to explain that he worked closely with Hwang and the shows costume and makeup teams to develop the characters look. But, he said, Hyun-jus short bangs were my idea.He also noted that in a particular scene, Hwang asked him to think about how Hyun-jus mother would have felt when she first learned about his characters sexuality.Hwang wanted that emotion to come through, but at the same time, didnt want to overdo it, Park said.Park also explained that Hwang had spotted his feminine side and saw the character in him in his performance as a grieving father in a 2021 episode of the South Korean anthology series KBS Drama Special. I was raised with two older sisters, so it was difficult not to be influenced by them growing up, Park said. But I had kept this feminine side of me hidden.Hwang, meanwhile, addressed criticism of his casting of Park late last month, telling TVGuide.com that while he initially intended to cast a transgender actress, there are close to no actors that are openly trans, let alone openly gay, because unfortunately in the Korean society currently the LGBTQ community is rather still marginalized and more neglected, which is heartbreaking. In a subsequent interview with Decider, Hwang explained why he felt it was important to include a trans character in the shows second season.I saw the people who come to join the games in Squid Game as people who are usually marginalized or neglected from society, and not just financially speaking, he said. Today, unfortunately, in Korean society, the gender minority is a group that is not as accepted widely within society. Which is why I created the character Hyun-ju as a male to female transgender woman.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Donald Trump stops giving PrEP to gay men & sex workers, ensuring HIV outbreaks abroad
The U.S. State Department has issued a memo stating that the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program to prevent HIV in low- and middle-income foreign countries, can only offer HIV-preventing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medications to pregnant and breastfeeding women (PBFW) rather than to LGBTQ+ people, sex workers and other groups at high-risk for contracting HIV.The memo circulated by the State Departments Global Health Security and Diplomacy program states, People other than PBFW who may be at high risk of HIV infection or were previously initiated on a PrEP option cannot be offered PEPFAR-funded PrEP during this pause of U.S. Foreign Assistance or until further notice. Related Donald Trumps freeze on foreign aid puts 500,000 childrens lives at risk The pause mentioned in the memo refers to a 90-day hold on all foreign aid issued by President Donald Trumps executive order on reevaluating and realigning U.S. foreign aid. This could cruelly lead to the infection, and eventual death, of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. There is no other explanation for these guidelines other than cruel, vindictive behavior meant to cause pain and suffering to vulnerable communities disfavored by President Trumps right-wing base, Besen continued, adding, Arent conservatives supposed to be pro-life, or do they only care about life for those who are just like them?Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a waiver for lifesaving medicines and medical services affected by the pause, but his memo explained that PEPFAR funds will be restricted in various ways. In addition to denying PrEP medications to all but PBFW, Rubios restrictions also prohibit surveys and systems tracking the spread of HIV and child abuse in regional populations, as well as any projects scheduled beyond December 31 of this year. As a result, the programs HIV-prevention drugs are reportedly still not reaching their intended recipients, many clinics have ceased offering services, and healthcare workers havent been paid, the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) reported. These all increase the likelihood of rising HIV rates, outbreaks, and HIV-related deaths abroad, KFF and Besen said. The freeze and restrictions on PEPFAR funding have coincided with the dismantling of USAID the independent U.S. international development agency that implements most U.S. global health programs by Trumps unofficial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). DOGE, which is not an official federal department created through required congressional approval, isheaded by the worlds richest man, Elon Musk.Musk has made the elimination of the agency a top DOGE priority, stating, USAID is a criminal organization. Time for it to die, without citing any evidence. Although USAID is the primary source of funding for HIV/AIDS relief for over 25 million people in 54 countries, the agencys website has since been disabled. A large portion of USAIDs personnel have been furloughed or fired; PEPFAR recipients have been left with no way to reach longtime contacts or access guidance. The Trump administration announced its intention to remove almostall USAID workers from their jobsand out of the field worldwide. Rubio said recipient organizations would have to apply for waivers to restart the funding.Opponents have called Trump and Musks actions against PEPFAR and USAID illegal and unconstitutional. No, Crumbl is not Crumbl-ing, gay CEO Sawyer Hemsley says
Sawyer Hemsley, founder of the popular bakery franchise Crumbl, has taken to social media to set the record straight (well) on rumors that the company was on the verge of closing down.On Friday, November 12, Bloomberg reported that Crumbl had "laid off dozens of corporate employees and announced it would drastically reduce its expansion plans." The publication alleged that the "average store revenue had plummeted 37 percent" in recent years, widening the gap between Crumbl's "well-performing stores" vs. the "struggling ones."Hemsley clapped back at the report in a TikTok video shared over the weekend to his personal account."I'm here to clear up the rumors that people think Crumbl is closing. That is absolutely not true," Hemsley started. "We're actually moving offices for reasons such as updating our Crumbl Test Kitchen. Weve seen the attempts to stifle our ability to express and celebrate our community values, he added. Yet time and time again, our community has risen to the occasion. And this latest challenge will be no exception.A post from the citys official social media account said the murals that had to be removed which included one declaring, Black History Matters reflect the soul of our community. That message cant be erased. This is our city, our voice, and our story Together, well continue building a community that is resilient, inclusive, and united. While state and federal officials have said that street art distracts drivers, data from theBloomberg Philanthropies 2022 Asphalt Art Safety Studycontradicts that claim. The study found that crashes involving pedestrians or cyclists drop 50% at painted intersections. It also reported a 25% decrease in conflicts between drivers and pedestrians, a 27% increase in drivers immediately yielding to pedestrians, and a 38% decrease in pedestrians crossing when the walk signal was not lit at intersections involving public art. The data also revealed that injuries resulting from crashes drop 37% in painted intersections. Heated Rivalry is Hoopla's No. 1 book since the TV show premiered
We're so into playing hockey and reading books right now.Heated Rivalry has only released four episodes so far, but the TV series has already become a cultural phenomenon. Of note, it is Crave's No. 1 original series of all time, it has topped HBO Max's daily charts for most-watched TV shows in the U.S., and it still has very limited physical copies available for sale due to an intense interest in purchasing the novels.Wondering if the success of the Crave/HBO Max series had translated into more fans wanting to borrow Rachel Reid's Game Changers series of novels, Out reached out to Hoopla one of the biggest platforms in digital media service for public library users and asked. Not only was the answer a resounding yes, but the statistics shared by Hoopla are fascinating. Hudson Williams as Shane Hollander and Connor Storrie as Ilya Rozanov on Heated Rivalry season 1.HBO Max/Crave CanadaA rep for Hoopla tells Out that the Heated Rivalry novel has become the No. 1 most borrowed e-book across its entire library since the TV show premiered on both Crave and HBO Max. The novel is also the platform's No. 3 most borrowed audiobook as it stands. The increased interest in reading the books that originated the characters seen on Heated Rivalry only grew when the TV series premiered its first two episodes on Friday, November 28. Yet, despite only having a couple of weeks as opposed to all or most of 2025 to catch up, three novels within the Game Changers literary series by Rachel Reid have already cracked Hoopla's top 10 list of most borrowed e-books for the entire 2025 calendar year.Hoopla also disclosed the top 10 list of most borrowed LGBTQ+ fiction books for the entire year of 2025.The House in the Cerulean Sea by T. J. Klune (audiobook)Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid (e-book)For the Fans by Nyla K. (audiobook)Saint by Sierra Simone (audiobook)The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (e-book)Pucking Sweet by Emily Rath (audiobook)The Long Game by Rachel Reid (e-book)Game Changer by Rachel Reid (e-book)Blood of Hercules by Jasmine Mas (e-book)For context, Game Changer was Reid's first novel in the series, and it focused on the love story between Scott Hunter (played by Franois Arnaud on the TV show) and Kip Grady (played by Robbie G.K. on the show). Heated Rivalry is the second novel in the series, which introduced readers to beloved characters like Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie). The sixth and final book in Reid's Game Changers universe, The Long Game, serves as a direct sequel to Heated Rivalry given that it centers Shane and Ilya once again. It bears repeating that three of six books related to this hit TV show have made it into this top 10 list from Hoopla even though this live-action adaptation of Reid's work was released in (very) late November unlike the seven other books in this year-end list. Following the announcement that Heated Rivalry season 2 is officially happening, it's pretty exciting to think about people picking up the habit to read books all over again.Reading is fun, after all And fundamental!Heated Rivalry is streaming on HBO Max.

Utterly abysmal: Protestors demonstrate why anti-trans bathroom laws cant be practically enforced
An anti-trans bathroom bill that took effect in Texas on December 4th is proving complicated to enforce, something trans advocates have known all along would be the case. On December 6, transgender protestors with a group called the 6W Project visited the Texas Capitol and attempted to use the restrooms that aligned with their gender identities to make a point about the lack of enforcement mechanisms in the law. Related Nancy Mace blames transgender people for her public airport freak-out At first, they easily entered the bathrooms of their choice, then proceeded to give speeches in the Capitol Rotunda, The Texas Tribune reported. But when they attempted to use the restrooms a second time, officers stopped them and asked to see their IDs. Officers claimed in a statement that the ID requests were voluntary, though those who did not show their IDs were barred from entering the bathroom. The officers did allow two trans women with female markers on their IDs to enter the womens restrooms. Officers also reportedly only guarded the womens restroom and not the mens. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today I think that the Texas government just established that they have no consistent enforceable standards for this law, protester Matilda Miller told the Texas Tribune. What we did was not radical, it was not profound, added 6W Project co-founder Ry Vazquez. People use the restroom every day in a public setting, and for it to become what it is now, where it is now an active threat to someone who is not prepared, is utterly abysmal.Marketed as The Texas Womens Privacy Act, TexasSenate Bill 8has become better known as the bathroom bill. Its enactment marks the culmination of a10-year effort by Texas Republicans. Under the bill, access to restrooms and other facilities in taxpayer-funded buildings must be limited based on sex assigned at birth. The law applies to county and city buildings, state agency buildings, city-managed airports, public schools, and public universities. The law does not allow an individual to be punished or fined by the state; rather, it fines the institution that allowed the infraction $25,000, plus an additional $125,000 per day for additional violations. Critics of the law have worried that it will spark violent over-policing by the institutions at risk of these massive fines. This policing will affect both trans and cis people who dont fit strict gender norms. AsBrian Klosterboer, senior staff attorney for the ACLU of Texas, said, Were still very worried that its gonna lead to a lot of harassment against trans people in particular, but also against any person who maybe looks too masculine or too feminine, or someone just wants to report them to the police or to a local entity. The law has already been used in ways that lawmakers may not have intended. Students at the University ofTexasSan Antonio (UTSA), for example, are being forced out of their current dorm rooms and made to relocate because of the ban. At UTSA, mixed-gender dorms include pairs of rooms separated by a shared bathroom; often, those rooms are occupied by people of different genders.Any students sharing a bathroom between their rooms with someone of a different sex assigned at birth are being forcibly rehoused to comply with the new law. I dont understand how you can police this to fully consenting adults, said Katarina Rendon, a UTSA sophomore. Theyre separating brothers and sisters. Theyre separating couples. You choose to live with who you want to live with, and theyre taking that choice away. Rendon says that she and her mother were given only one day to relocate her room to a different wing.Even more, research has shown no evidence that allowing trans women access to single-sex spaces like bathrooms poses a safety risk to cisgender women. In fact, forcing trans people to use facilities that do not align with their gender identity can result in high rates of harassment and violence against transgender people as well as cisgender people, particularly women who do not conform to traditional ideas of femininity, according to theMovement Advancement Project. A 2021 study from UCLAs Williams Institute found that trans people arefour times more likely than cis peopleto be victims of violent crime.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Trump set to issue a dollar coin with his face next year as Treasury rejects woke coin designs
Out Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent rejected several woke designs for commemorative coins for the nations 250th anniversary next year, choosing instead a set of coins that will mostly honor white men. And now the administration seems poised to issue a coin bearing the face of a current, living president, something usually seen only in monarchies and dictatorships. Related Gay Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is hiding evidence of Jeffrey Epsteins crimes, senator says The Treasury unveiled a set of commemorative coins that will be available next year, mostly for collectors, even though they will be legal tender. The designs for the quarters in the collection were unveiled last week and will feature various presidents on one side and moments in U.S. history on the other: a straight Pilgrim couple and the Mayflower; George Washington and a Revolutionary War soldier; Thomas Jefferson and the Liberty Bell; James Madison and Independence Hall; and Abraham Lincoln and two interlocking hands to represent the Gettysburg Address. The collection will also include a nickel with a new picture of Thomas Jefferson on it and a dime with the only solo woman featured on one of these coins: Liberty herself, along with an eagle on the back, removing Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt from the coin. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The New York Times reports that the designs announced at an event last week were selected by Bessent himself over the recommendations of an 11-member committee of numismatists, historians, and other members of the public. The committees recommendations included designs that portrayed a more colorful and diverse history of the U.S., including one with abolitionist Frederick Douglass to honor the end of slavery, a Suffragette carrying a Votes for Women flag to honor womens rights, and Ruby Bridges, the 6-year-old Black girl who attended a formerly whites-only school, to honor the Civil Rights Movement. This is the first time since the committee was created in 2003 that the U.S. Mint approved designs that were not vetted by it. Members of the committee did not attend the ceremony announcing next years designs. But one coin whose design has not yet been officially announced is the dollar coin. U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach a Trump appointee said earlier this year that the Treasury would mint a dollar coin with Trump on both sides next year. The front would have a portrait of Trump on it, and the back would have a picture inspired by the image of Trump during an assassination attempt last year. The move would end the practice of not putting the current president on currency, something started by George Washington in the 1700s, who rejected a proposal to put his own face on U.S. coins. While monarchs like those of Great Britain are depicted on other countries currency, Washington thought putting his own face on a coin would be too similar to what was the practice in England.CNBC reports that the Treasury still says the design for the dollar coin has not been finalized, but the U.S. Mints webpage about the dollar coin lists only three contenders for the heads side, and all three are pictures of Trump. The six designs shown on that webpage for the tails side are all of eagles. A Mint spokesperson pointed out that there is no law against putting a sitting president on money without commenting on the appropriateness. In Congress, Democrats are trying to pass a law to ban the Treasury from putting Trumps face on the dollar coin. The Change Corruption Act, introduced by Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), would ban the U.S. Mint from making any currency with the likeness of a living or sitting President.President Trumps self-celebrating maneuvers are authoritarian actions worthy of dictators like North Koreas Kim Jong Un, not the United States of America, said Merkley in a press release. We must reject his efforts to dismantle our We, The People republic and replace it with a strongman state by demanding strong accountability to prevent further abuse of taxpayer dollars. Since Republicans control both chambers of Congress and Trump himself is president the bill is unlikely to pass. Beach snarked that Democrats were so triggered by the proposed coin celebrating our nations 250th anniversary that they are trying to recklessly change law to block it.The coins are authorized by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, signed by Trump in January 2021, which mandates the Treasury to create commemorative coins for the nations 250th anniversary. The law mandates five designs for quarters, with the requirement that one of them represent womens contributions to the U.S. That was supposed to be the quarter depicting a Suffragette, but its now the coin with the straight Pilgrim couple. The Mayflower Compact Quarter fulfills this legislative requirement, a Mint official told the Times. The women of the Plymouth colony were essential for the colonys survival by making medicines from native plants, preserving food, and educating children. Its likely the women formed early connections with the Native American Wampanoag community, collecting knowledge about farming and food preparation. Two other coins a penny and a half-dollar will be released only as collectibles.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Scumbag-in-Chief: Trump brags about his greatness while blaming Rob Reiner for his own murder
Donald Trump has used the sudden and tragic deaths of legendary director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, to brag about his own greatness. The Reiners were found dead in their Los Angeles home Sunday afternoon from an apparent homicide. Despite there being almost no information on what happened (other than their son, Nick Reiner, being arrested afterward), Trump blamed the late directors death on his being anti-Trump. Facing internal revolt, Mike Johnsons days as Speaker of the House are clearly numbered
Mike Johnsons days as speaker of the House are numbered. The only question is how long he will last.A series of events in the past few weeks has undercut what little power Johnson ever had among his fellow Republicans in the House. GOP representatives the group that he theoretically leads are so angry that they publicly call him names. Republicans are using parliamentary procedures to get votes on bills that Johnson doesnt want to bring to the floor. Related MAGA Republicans threaten to lay waste to Mike Johnson if he doesnt keep all his promises Incumbents panicking over the potential to lose their seats, in a Democratic landslide, are blaming Johnson for their problems. He has to make promises he must know he cant keep to get bills passed. And Donald Trump is doing nothing to help Johnson in his time of need.It couldnt happen to a nicer guy. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Johnson has always been a weak speaker. As a reminder, he got the job primarily because no one else was bland enough to win the requisite number of votes. Johnson was the fourth choice for the job. That hes managed to hold onto his job for more than two years is a testament to the partys unwillingness to go through the humiliation of another long, drawn-out search for a replacement that will satisfy both the far-right and the less far-right wings in the House.Apparently, though, Johnson has infuriated enough people that he is barely holding onto his job. The far-right House members have never been fans, threatening him since day one. Despite Johnsons impeccable credentials as a bigot and Christian nationalist, the extremists dont think he is pushing their agenda hard enough. Because the GOP holds such a slim majority in the House, a handful of dissident votes would cost Johnson the speakership. There have been past attempts. In May 2024, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was booed off the House floor for trying to oust Johnson. If she had only waited, shed have had the support she needed to succeed. He certainly wouldnt have the votes to be speaker if there was a roll-call vote tomorrow, Rep. Elise Stefanik told the Wall Street Journal earlier this month. I believe that the majority of Republicans would vote for new leadership. Its that widespread. Stefanik called Johnson a political novice unfit to be speaker. Shes angry that he pulled her nomination as ambassador to the United Nations to satisfy some personnel shuffling in the White House.Usually, that kind of rhetoric would be a cloak for personal ambition. But Stefanik is running for governor of New York (very likely losing) and will be leaving Congress. Johnsons treatment of women in the House is, by most accounts, what youd expect from a man who believes women should be subservient to men. Speaking anonymously, one female GOP representative slammed Johnson for refusing to treat women as equals. We arent taken seriously, the representative told NBC News. You have women who are very accomplished, very successful, who have earned the merit, who arent given the time of the day. That attitude has led some incumbents to consider retirement like Greene while complicating efforts to recruit women as candidates. Its not just women heading for the door. A flood of GOP representatives are unhappy and leaving, especially when faced with brutal polls for Republican candidates everywhere. The count is over two dozen so far and likely to keep rising. The less extreme Republicans in swing districts are furious that Johnson hasnt let them have a vote on extending subsidies for insurance premiums under Obamacare, knowing that they will be hammered during next years election cycle for supporting the cuts. In the meantime, Republicans in the House are treating Johnson as a roadblock that they can go around. Johnson can determine what bills come to the floor for a vote, but through a process called a discharge petition, House members can bring a bill to the floor directly. There have been a record number of discharge petitions this year. The most famous one was the petition to release the files related to convicted pedophile (and erstwhile Trump pal) Jeffrey Epstein. Johnson was so desperate to prevent that vote that he kept the House out of session for almost eight weeks during the government shutdown. He refused to swear in newly elected Rep. Adelita Grijalva (D-AZ) for 50 days, knowing that she would be the final signature needed to force the vote. House members steamed over Johnsons tactic because other work should have been happening during their forced leave. In the end, Johnson burned his political capital for nothing, since Trump caved to pressure and announced that he supported the release of the files. Other end runs around Johnson have been equally humiliating. With bipartisan support, the House passed a bill to protect some federal workers who are union members and another bill banning stock trading by members of Congress. Neither bill is going to pass the Senate, but Johnson earned a lot of enmity for blocking his party members from bringing the bill to the floor the usual way.Not that thats been working for Johnson anyway. He had to pull out all the stops to get the National Defense Authorization Act passed. The spending bill, which is marked by anti-trans bigotry, should have been an easy sell. Instead, the America-first contingent in the House hated spending money on foreign wars while the federal deficit grew. That led to promises from Johnson that he may not be able to keep.If Johnson was looking for backup from the president, hes learning that loyalty is a one-way street for Trump. Trump hasnt spent any energy on a health care bill that Republicans could use to mitigate the cuts that they voted for. Indeed, at times, Trump has seemed to go out of his way to embarrass Johnson. Trump didnt inform the speaker before he pardoned Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), a Democrat indicted on conspiracy and bribery charges (which Cuellar denies). Republicans had considered Cuellars seat a good prospect to flip, but not anymore. Trump had hoped Cuellar, a conservative with an anti-trans voting record, would become a Republican, but Cuellar said he will remain a Democrat.I didnt know anything about it, Johnson was forced to admit. The main issue before Johnson now is how long until hes no longer the speaker of the House. Its possible that Republicans, knowing they will lose the House anyway, will decide not to go through another demeaning exercise of trying (and failing) to find a new speaker. On the other hand, they may just want to kick Johnson out for the sheer pleasure of it.Either way, Johnson will be out one way or another. The only question is whether its due to voters angry with Republicans in the House or Republicans in the House angry with one of their own.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Kim Petras claps back at Nicki Minaj's transphobic tirade
As Nicki Minaj continues her MAGA spiral, one of her former collaborators, Kim Petras, has responded.Over the last month, rapper Nicki Minaj has been sharing more and more social media posts praising President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, while attacking California Governor Gavin Newsom and trans youth. Now, one of her former collaborators, Grammy winner Kim Petras, has clapped back.On December 12, Minaj shared a post on X referencing a video where Newsom, a Democratic presidential hopeful, said he "wants to see trans kids" but also said "you have to accommodate the reality of those whose rights are being taken away as we advance the rights of the trans community, in terms of the fairness of athletic competition.""Imagine being the guy running on wanting to see trans kids. Culver City elects first out gay mayorand Elphaba helped celebrate
Culver City, the California city where The Wizard of Oz was filmed, has elected its first out gay mayor and some notable Ozians were there to celebrate.Freddy Puza was unanimously voted by Culver City's city council last Monday to become mayor, making him the first out LGBTQ+ person to hold this post in Culver's 108-year history.Culver City is a major entertainment hub; it's home to Sony Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where Judy Garland made cinema (and gay) history as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. To mark Puza's election, Oz witches Glinda and Elphaba were present at Puza's swearing-in last week. Puza, the former vice mayor of Culver City who was first elected to the city council in 2022, was sworn in by the city clerk and his mayoral badge was pinned on by his nephew and goddaughter. "It was, truly, a wicked good time," Puza says of the ceremony. Culver City Mayor Freddy Puza with Glinda and ElphabaCourtesy Freddy PuzaPuza also recognized the importance of his election during the current political moment. "It is a honor to serve and make history as Culver Citys first openly LGBTQ Mayor, after serving as the citys first LGBTQ Vice Mayor. The significance of that is not lost on me, especially in a moment when LGBTQ+ rights are still treated as negotiable, when LGBTQ+ youth face disproportionately high suicide rates, and when being LGBTQ+ remains criminalized in parts of the world. This moment sends a message far beyond our city: a message of visibility, dignity, and hope," Puza says. "Diversity is not a slogan. It is our strength. When leadership looks like the people it serves, something shifts not just in City Hall, but in classrooms and living rooms. It shifts in the minds of kids who have been told, implicitly or explicitly, that leadership isnt meant for them. Today, they can see that it is," he adds. "Growing up, there [weren't] many out role models. I was led to believe my future would mirror the narrow, negative stereotypes of LGBTQ+ people portrayed in the media. Standing here now proves those stories wrong. That door is open, and once its open, it doesnt close. We move forward with pride."Puza will serve as Culver City's mayor for a 12-month term, and is "committed to making Culver City a destination and a home thats welcoming for all." Freddy Puza and Elphaba make a heart after Puza's historic election.Courtesy Freddy Puza

A December 4 article on the groups Washington Stand website says the restaurant waffles on wokeness for condoning a message that is radically at odds with the biblical values that most people associate them with. While most of Chick-fil-As chains are run by local operators, the fact that any location felt comfortable posting such a controversial message is further proof that the company hasnt weeded out the LGBT extremism that sparked so much backlash just a couple of years ago, FRCs website states. Chick-fil-A built a business model based almost entirely on faith. And frankly, that means they should be held to a higher standard.Christians even tried to get Chick-fil-A corporate to denounce the franchisee, but no dice. Chick-fil-A embraces all people, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity, the companys corporate office said in a statement its been sending out to people who complained about the Facebook post, according to FRC. The statement also says that the company is embedding Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) in everything we do. When Chick-fil-A says it embraces everyone, thats faithful to Scripture, David Closson, director of FRCs Center for Biblical Worldview, said. But to embrace contested identities such as transgender identities or identities rooted in same-sex behavior as morally legitimate expressionsis something altogether different. A company grounded in Christian conviction should be able to love and serve every person without endorsing categories that contradict biblical truth. For years, social conservatives were buoyed in the culture wars by the ability of companies like Hobby Lobby to resist left-wing political trends and fads because of their private ownership, said Steve Soukup of Political Forum, a rightwing blog.Chick-fil-As insensitivity to the current of cultural rebalancing represents the mirror image of that resistance.Free Enterprise Project Director Stefan Padfield told the Washington Stand: Chick-fil-A is free to embrace DEI and we are free to eat elsewhere. The media first reported on Chick-fil-As anti-LGBTQ+ donations in January 2011, when several large donations to anti-LGBTQ+ organizations like Family Research Council and the conversion therapy group Exodus International were uncovered. The companys CEO, Dan Cathy, said thatthey were guilty as charged when it came to homophobia.Despite some attempts to shift, Chick-fil-A has continued to donate to organizations that discriminate against LGBTQ+ people and that have official anti-LGBTQ+ policies, until as recently as 2017.But the fast food chain has cleaned up its image in the last several years as it tries to expand internationally, and has even been accused by major Republicans of being too woke. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) said that Chick-fil-A surrendered to anti-Christian hate groups last year, and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said the chain badly lost its way for having a DEI initiative at all.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Even Marjorie Taylor Greene is shocked by Donald Trumps latest rant
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) had some choice words for Donald Trump after he posted a long message to social media making legendary director Rob Reiners death all about himself.Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their home on Sunday in what investigators believe was a homicide, and their own son has been arrested as a suspect in their deaths. Related Marjorie Taylor Greene says GOP leader promised a vote on her bill to put pro-trans doctors in jail The gruesome death shocked many people, but not Donald Trump, apparently.A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood, the president wrote on Truth Social.Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS. Administration announces investigation into health care providers conscience rights
The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced an investigation that may simply be an attempt to prevent access to gender-affirming care. The investigation targets the specter of health care professionals being pressured to provide care that might be against their moral or religious views, but experts suggest that it is really about creating an atmosphere of fear around offering gender-affirming care and abortion care. The OCR press releasefrom Tuesday reveals a major investigation into the health department of a state that is not named in the announcement. The OCR suggested that its licensing policies, interpretations, or enforcement practices regarding behavioral health might violate federal law by discriminating against providers who refuse to provide certain types of care or by requiring them to provide that care. Behavioral health refers to mental health, substance abuse, and associated conditions and symptoms. Related Allowing parents to opt kids out of lessons doesnt protect religious freedom. It destroys it. In particular, the investigation targets sex-rejecting procedures, female genital mutilation, and abortion. Both sex-rejecting procedures and female genital mutilation seem to be intended to target gender affirming care with inaccurate and derogatory terms. The Department of Justice, this year, said that it would try to prosecute doctors who provide gender-affirming care under a law that bans female genital mutilation. It is important to note that the presidential administration has not shown any interest in addressing the nonconsensual surgeries conducted on intersex children. Subscribe to our Newsletter today As the press release does not name the state the OCR is investigating, it is unclear what they believe is a possible violation. Some medical organizations in the United States and some state laws require providers to either administer care or, if it conflicts with their religious or moral views, provide a timely referral to another provider. The OCR claims that the investigation is driven by a need for more healthcare providers to be available, seemingly suggesting that behavioral healthcare providers are choosing not to practice because they fear being required to violate their own beliefs. Paula M. Stannard, the OCRs director, said in the announcement, Amid a national shortage of behavioral health providers, every qualified professional is essential to meeting the needs of people in crisis. OCR is committed to ensuring that faith-based organizations can contribute fully and that no provider is asked to violate their religious beliefs or moral convictions as they step forward to serve. While the presidential administration is eager to claim that this is about religious and moral freedom, advocacy experts insist that these sorts of investigations are about creating a system of fear and deterring doctors from providing certain types of care at all.Theyre only obsessed with preventing trans people from accessing the care that their bodies need, Adrian Shanker, a deputy assistant secretary for health policy under Biden, told Advocate. Between these investigations, consistent rule changes, and public announcements of federal enforcement plans, Shanker suggests that the intended effect is to leave healthcare providers wrong-footed and unsure of what they can do without fearing reprisal from the federal government. The result, Shanker says, is for providers to offer compliance in advance, or to roll back their offerings of abortion or gender-affirming care entirely. The HHSs announcement is light on specifics, and it asks anyone who feels theyve been discriminated against for their exercise of conscience to come forward. This might suggest that they are seeking justification for an expanded investigation or an ideal plaintiff for a test case.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
