Rimming, explained: Sex experts share tips and techniques for better pleasure
Queer as Folk may have broken barriers by featuring a rimming scene 26 years ago, but there is still a lot of stigma around this taboo sex actprobably because homophobes have linked it to anal sex and therefore gay men and consider it dirtywhich means that you while youve likely heard of it, you may have never given it a try.Ok, so there was also an analingus scene in White Lotus a few years ago and one in Euphoria, but its still a taboo subject that most people wont talk about in polite society. But rimming can be a fun, extremely pleasurable, and normal part of your sex life, regardless of you sexual orientation or gender identity. Everyone has nerve endings back there, so why not explore them? So, whether youre still a newbie and dont really know what youre doing, or youre a salad tossing virgin, dont worry because weve reached out to sex and sexual health experts who will have you looking like an ass eating veteran in no time!So youre curious about rimming, but should you give it a try?If youre curious at all, then its worth giving it a try. You may discover that you enjoy giving, receiving, or both! According to Birna Gustafsson, a sex educator and public health advocate who focuses on queer pleasure, STIs, and contraception myths, if youve ever explored your own anus with your fingers while masturbating or if the idea of licking your partner or being licked by them has you quaking with desire, then eating ass may be for you. If you notice that adding some pressure to the outside of the anal area heightens your sensation during sex or masturbation, rimming can be exactly what takes your pleasure to the next level, she tells PRIDE.Analingus can also be incredibly pleasurable and a great way to start exploring anal play, renowned anal surgeon Dr. Evan Goldstein, who is also the Founder and CEO of Bespoke Surgical and Future Method, explains. The anus is rich with nerve endings, and when stimulatedespecially with the warmth and softness of a tongueit can trigger full-body pleasure, even intensifying orgasm by activating the pelvic floor muscles that also wrap around the penis and prostate, he says. "For many, rimming can be the perfect gateway to anal play: external, non-penetrative, and deeply erotic in its own right. How do you bring it up to your partner or hookup?Communication is key when you want to try something new in bed and rim jobs are no different. Be honest about your interest, and stay open to their response. If theyre hesitant, thats okayits not everyones go-to (youre licking someones asshole after all). Respect their boundaries, just as youd want yours respected, Dr. Goldstein says.Gustafsson agrees and says that if you want to munch on your partner or hookups peach, you can ask how comfortable they are with exploring anal play and then explain how much youre looking forward to trying this with them. You can also ensure your pleasure by letting them know how much the idea excites you or how curious you are to see how they like it, she says. Our experts also provided some suggested questions you can ask to get the conversation started:Hey, Ive been curious about trying somethingcan I run it by you?Ive been exploring more down there on my own, and I want to know how it feels with a mouth. Im so curious, but Ill take your lead. How do you feel about that?I love the way your mouth makes me feel. Ive noticed youre going a little more south, do you ever think about going further? Id like to know how it feels, are you into that? What should you do to prep?Since were talking about eating ass, good hygiene is going to be your best friend here. If you think youre going to get some backdoor action, make sure you shower and clean your anus and the surrounding skin with warm water and a mild soap. You might want to go ahead and douche beforehand too so that if your partner has an impressively adventurous tongue, or rimming leads to anal sex, youre already ready to go, Dr. Goldstein says. You may also want to do a little landscaping before someone sticks their face back there, but it really depends on your preference and that of your sex partner. Its all about preferencesome folks love it natural, others want a smooth landscape, he explains. If hair removals on the table, we recommend laser over shaving, waxing, or depilatories. Those methods can cause microtears, irritation, and even trigger dormant HPV.How can you try analingus safely?Whether youre a salad tossing newbie or it makes a regular rotation in your sexual repertoire, you should be practicing safe sex. But what does that mean when it comes to analingus?Like all sex acts, analingus has its risksmostly related to STIs (like Hepatitis A, Herpes, HPV, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and others), as well as bacterial infections (like e.coli and salmonella). Giardia, a microscopic parasite that is passed through feces, and other parasites can also be present, Dr. Goldstein warns. Luckily, there are things you can do to help reduce this risk.Apparently, cleanliness is next to godliness even when talking about rim jobs! Its important to make sure youre clean before you get started, and then once everyone has come, you should hop back in the shower to clean off again. Dr. Goldstein also recommends avoiding playtime if either partner is under the weather or has an active STI, getting regular checkups with your healthcare provider (including oral and anal screenings), and rinsing your mouth with mouthwash once playtime is over because micro-scratches on your gums can allow bacteria in.You can also use dental dams or single-use latex underwear like Lorals to provide added protection and peace of mind. These thin barrier methods are surprisingly pleasurable, dont knock it til you try it! They can transfer even feather-like, barely there sensations or tongue-flicks, Gustafsson says. But even if both you and your sex partner have clean STI panels, you still want to take precautions because fecal bacteria can still cause infection or illness. After rimming someone, avoid licking their vulva/vagina or tip of their penis. Bacteria from the rectum should avoid coming into contact with the urethra or the vagina to prevent infection, she recommends.5 tips and tricks for getting the most out of rimmingTry different positions Variety is the spice of life, so try different positions like doggy style, with the receiver on their back, or face sitting. You can also try having the giver kneel on the floor at the foot of the bed with the receiver on their hands and knees on the bed with their butt facing you so that they can grind against your mouth or they can hover over your mouth while youre lying down. For those into power play, this position is a great way of being a receiver while maintaining control, Gustafsson says.Use your tongue like a proUse the the tip of your tongue to create a firm point to stimulate your partner, but avoid dating motions. Instead, create feather-like, barely there strokes in one direction, Gustafsson explains. Start slow, this is a great way to tease the area and get a sense for how much pressure they enjoy. Since it is such a delicate area, less is more! Try light flicks, firm strokes, breath play, gentle sucking, and circling their anus with your tongue. You can also use the middle part of your tongue to create firm pressure. But if youre tongue starts getting tired, press your tongue against them and move your whole head up and down to lap at them. This way, your jaw and neck are doing the bulk of the work while your tongue gets a break.Lend a handWhen youre rimming, you mouth isnt the only thing that should be getting in on the action. To take you and your partner from a normal orgasm to fireworks exploding behind your eyes, add in other forms of stimulation. While youre licking and sucking on your partners peach or their doing it to you, add in a hand job, fingering, or using a vibrator. The receiver can also masturbate while getting rimmed.Spreading your own cheeks can give your partner direct access to your hole (and signal youre into it), Dr. Goldstein recommends.Explore the surrounding areasNo need to stick to just the anus, try licking and touching the taint, balls, inner thighs, or even hips, which Dr. Goldstein says are extra-sensitive and crave attention too.Keep it wetA wet tongue feels better than a dry one, and dont be shy about using your own spit. You can also use lube to make things extra slippery. Adding a drop of silicone lubricant can make things go smoother, especially if youre adding fingers to the mix while rimming them, Gustafsson says. Keep in mind, though, that too much lube or wetness from saliva can saturate the nerves and actually make it more difficult for the receiver to feel what youre doing. Is it normal to feel shame? Its common to feel shame about wanting to explore anal play, especially because your mouth is involved in analingus and society has conditioned us to view it as dirty or taboo since its associated with queer pleasure and submission. Some people dont enjoy rimming, but for others it is a primary source of sexual pleasureboth are ok.But heres the thing: pleasure isnt shameful, Dr. Goldstein says. The anus is packed with pleasure potential, and theres nothing dirty about being curious or wanting more sensation. If someone makes you feel judged for wanting to explore, thats a red flagnot a reflection of your desires. The right partner will meet your curiosity with respect, not shame.Gustafsson also says that some people dont get down with rim jobs until they are horny, For many people, they dont feel much of anything until theyre aroused, so rimming is enjoyable after theyve already started touching themselves or each other. But if you are flooded with shame before or after the act itself, you can overcome this by owning and embodying your pleasure, she explains. Is rimming just for gay men?No, rimming is for everyone. The popular imagination may associate all butt stuff with gay men, but anyone can enjoy anal sex and analingus. Many vulva owners love it as the area is sensitive on its own, and the legs of the clitoris are nearby, Gustafsson says. "Many people also enjoy the taboo aspect of the act, regardless of their sexual orientation. While we all differ in our sexual preferences, everyone has an anus, so it is a universal experience to explore and seek pleasure in such a sensitive, erogenous zone.Dr. Goldstein couldnt agree more, Analingus is for anyone with a buttwhich is, well, everyone. Regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, rimming can be a powerful, pleasurable part of intimacy. It relaxes the body, builds trust, and for many, feels amazing with or without penetration. Think of it as the warm-up act that can also steal the hole show. Pun intended!Experts cited:Dr. Evan Goldstein, a renowned anal surgeon who is also the Founder and CEO of Bespoke Surgical and Future Method.Birna Gustafsson, a sex educator and public health advocate who focuses on queer pleasure, STIs, and contraception myths.

  • King Princess Maisie Richardson Sellers Nine Perfect Strangers
    WWW.OUT.COM
How Maisie Richardson-Sellers 'fought' for her 'Nine Perfect Strangers' character
Maisie Richardson-Sellers has long made a name for herself through grounded, magnetic performances across genres from playing Amaya Jiwe on DC's Legends of Tomorrow to embodying a queens cunning in The Originals. With each role, shes carved out a space for complex, emotionally rich Black women on screen. Now, she brings that same depth to Hulus Nine Perfect Strangers, portraying Wolfie, whose exterior slowly unravels to reveal pain, resilience, and growth. Its in episode 4 where Wolfies story truly breaks open, offering a layered look at her past and peeling back the quiet survival shes been operating in since her arrival at Tranquillum House. In her conversation with Out, Richardson-Sellers shares how she fought to ensure Wolfies backstory felt full and authentic, not just a passing detail. She also revealed she had to unlearn an emotional habit of staying silent in moments of pain, a personal breakthrough that deeply informed her performance. Maisie Richardson-Sellers in Nine Perfect StrangersHuluYouve played everything from time travelers to psychological thrill leads, but in Nine Perfect Strangers, we meet Wolfie through her relationship. How much of her identity did you build from who she loves versus what shes survived?Maisie Richardson-Sellers: Wow, that's a good question. What I love about Wolfie is she is such a collage of things. She's the onion right at the heart of everything. Shes this beautiful, powerful, dedicated spirit. As the years have gone on, she's been covered, cloaked, dimmed, and sort of trapped largely by herself in this sort of toxic relationship. Also, the fact that she didn't have the finances to afford going to school to study to be a violinist, which was her passion, is one of the things that kind of dampened her magical spirit. Shes free falling at the moment when you meet her. I think she's trying to find some kind of a lifeline to grab onto and at the moment, its Tina. We go on a journey throughout the season of her trying to figure out who she is independently and how she can survive. In episode 4, we get to see her beforehand, which is beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time because you see who she was and who she's become and it gives you hope of who she could be.Whats a version of yourself that only shows up on set, and what part of you never makes it to camera?Thats a smart question, Ty. I think the best version of me that shows up on set is I'm extremely professional and careful in my work and the way I present myself because I think respect, discipline, and commitment are sort of my pillars of the way I work. I'd say the part that shows up least is actually the cheeky, spontaneous, slightly more erratic and mischievous side as that one stays in the streets I'd say. [laughs] King Princess, Dolly de Leon, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Murray Bartlett in Nine Perfect StrangersHuluYouve been in front of the camera and behind it, so when you direct, do you ever find yourself protecting your actors in ways you wish someone had protected you when you were just starting out?One-hundred [percent]. My main thing as a director is to listen, provide, and create a safe environment where people feel safe to play, to share, and to be vulnerable. Quite often, those things get lost in the madness and chaos of the set. I've seen it happen too many times. Ive seen people do things that they later regret because they felt pressured to do it, or they'll hide something during their scene when I know they could have gone deeper or pushed themselves harder or be challenged because they feel insecure or unsafe. My first priority is creating a bubble of protection so they can be the best versions of themselves on my set. Its collaboration, with making sure that everyone feels like their voices matter and everyone's also listening to each other as well as listening to myself and themselves. If you could teach a master class for young, queer creatives of color but you could only teach it through storytelling no advice, no lecture what scene from your real life would you use to educate them? The first thing that's coming to my mind is an audition. I was auditioning for Legends of Tomorrow. I hadn't had much experience and I was 23 years old at the time in Los Angeles. Ive never been a series regular before. Everyone was looking glam and glitzy and gorgeous. Back in the day, you used to have to wait and see all your competition [laughs] and I came in a tank top and jeans. Everyones kind of like looking at me and everyone's chit chatting. They all know each other. I felt so small and I just sat there. I was like, no, I refused to question myself by asking, why not me? I gathered myself and got my self motivation and power together. I went in and I smashed it. I gave my best, and I gave my true self. I didn't try to be like any of the other women. I just was like, this is me and it was a very honest performance. I was the underdog. I was the misfit. I use those things to my advantage and as a result, I won. I think especially as queer people, as people of color, often we are not the dominant voice in the room. We're not the one who's necessarily given the microphone. We're not the most numbered. I think it's even more important to lean into what makes you an individual and not try to blend in or try to dim light for the comfort of others in that space. King Princess and Maisie Richardson-Sellers in Nine Perfect StrangersHuluA lot of queer love on screen still feel like it needs to be explained for a mainstream audience. How intentional were you on Nine Perfect Strangers about showing the different perspectives and challenges of love with your character? One thing that was really important to me and in the work I create as well, is that queerness is not the center of that storyline. I think we need to move beyond that. It's one facet of our many, many faceted identities, right? I think what's good about this relationship between Wolfie and Tina is it's not about them being queer. It's about them being a couple who are struggling, who happen to be queer, and that's a part of their storyline, but it's not the main story and it's not about their queer sorrow or their queer trauma. One thing that was really important to me, which did not exist in the early scripts, was that Wolfie had a clear backstory. Why is she who she is? I fought really hard with the producers and the writers, and they wrote it. I'm so glad they did because now you understand her.In Nine Perfect Strangers, Wolfie is in a relationship that isnt built on fantasy, but its layered, its heavy, and its real. What did you learn about emotional intimacy by stepping into Wolfie?Emotional intimacy for me is intrinsically linked with a sense of safety. The safer that I feel, the more vulnerable and intimate I can be. I think with Wolfie, that's what she's craving. That's all she wants from Tina, which is to gain emotional intimacy. Tina's refusing her at every point, and that's making her feel starved. Its almost like her food sources being cut off by Tina denying this. It showed me just how someone can slip into survival mode when they're not being fed and stimulated and allowed to feel safe emotionally. She doesn't recognize herself. You see her just spiraling because a lot of the time you see Wolfie just acting on impulse and not being true to herself. Thats such a disorienting experience. Maisie Richardson-Sellers in Nine Perfect StrangersHuluWhats one emotional habit Wolfie has in her relationship that youve either unlearned in your own life or are still working through?I'm working through and have made huge progress on sometimes putting other people's comfort before my own. So therefore, not saying the thing I really want to say because I'm worried about sort of disrupting the peace or upsetting someone or making them feel a certain way. Sometimes I'll just swallow it. I think seeing that Wolfie does that to the extreme made me realize that that's not productive for anyone. It's not productive for me because then I build resentment and it's not productive for the person because they're never going to learn. It taught me to take more power over my voice and more autonomy over the way I feel, and to refuse to be treated in any way other than the way that I feel is just and fair for myself.Nine Perfect Strangers is now streaming on Hulu.

Electric Forest is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for everyone in the LGBTQ+ community
Happy Forest! When iconic Pride Month events come to mind, it's easy to immediately think of well-known gay parades and festivities that take place in popular areas like Los Angeles, New York City, or even Pensacola, Florida. It's incredible to see queer visibility celebrated in big cities and small towns across the United States, but there's one festival that occurs in the heart of Pride Month that truly encapsulates queer joy more than any other destination.Electric Forest hit a magical 13th year in Rothbury, Michigan this June and the inclusive festival brought LGBTQ+ visibility to the forefront at a time it's needed most. With multiple Pride activations, iconic music sets, drag brunches, immersive art installations, and thousands of queer people dancing all weekend long... Electric Forest is undeniably a can't-miss event that everyone in the LGBTQ+ community should experience at least one time in their lives. See on Instagram It's actually quite shocking just how gay this festival is. As I ventured through the breathtaking forest every single day, I was overwhelmed with all of the queer love that made Electric Forest feel like such a safe space.Let's be clear... I'm not just referring to all of the rainbow colors that beautifully lit up the forest each night. For this year's programming, Electric Forest recruited Jake Resnicow to take over the festival's Pride stage that featured legendary sets from The Knocks x Dragonette, Confidence Man, BAMBII, TAAHLIAH, and a slew of drag performers. However, the fun wasn't just limited to the Pride stage. One of the major things I personally love about Electric Forest is that the queer activations take place at every corner of this stunning festival.Throughout the spectacular meadow, it's likely you'll witness a queer couple getting married on-site at The Chapel or you'll see a group of gays rocking eccentric outfits as they venture from stage to stage. Plus, let's not forget that this year's festival literally had a gay soire that even had the headliner, Wreckno, propose to their partner! Talk about gay rights! See on Instagram There's so much political discourse surrounding LGBTQ+ equality today, so it's very inspiring and comforting that Electric Forest prioritizes queer acceptance in these challenging times.Electric Forest made history as the first major music festival to feature a Pride parade back in 2018 and the momentum has only grown since then. At a time where it feels like queer acceptance is regressing, this special festival is quite literally doing the exact opposite. In many ways, it feels like Electric Forest is embracing a future that many close-minded people are too afraid to embrace. As a proud gay man myself, I find myself struggling to accept where we are as a society today. That's why music festivals like Electric Forest are the medicine needed to keep up the good fight.I found myself saying, "I wish life was like this all the time" to many new members of my chosen family throughout the weekend. The real world may not be up to par with where Electric Forest is at, but thankfully, this very beautiful festival isn't going anywhere anytime soon.Trust me when I say Electric Forest is the escapism you just may need during these uncertain moments in history. To learn more about this exceptional festival and plan your once-in-a-lifetime trip, check out the official website here. You won't regret it! 'M3GAN 2.0' review: More camp, more kills, less chills
Your favorite killer doll's favorite killer doll is back.M3GAN 2.0 is out in theaters now, bringing the beloved gay icon and Out digital cover star back to the big screen. Sign up for the Out Newsletter to keep up with what's new in LGBTQ+ culture and entertainment delivered three times a week straight (well) to your inbox!Gerard Johnstone, who directed the first film, is back to helm the sequel. Johnstone also wrote the screenplay for M3GAN 2.0 after the original film's writer, Akela Cooper, stepped back. In the cast, Allison Williams reprises her role as M3GAN's inventor, Gemma, and Violet McGraw returns as Cady, the girl who was paired up with M3GAN in the first movie. This sequel starts a few years after the events of 2022's M3GAN and charts Gemma's public comeback after being blamed for M3GAN's initial rampage. In classic social-media-influencer-style, Gemma has written a book about the situation and became a public speaker and advocate for stricter artificial intelligence regulations, as well as parenting without the aid of technology. When a new and even deadlier android named AMELIA (Autonomous Military Engagement Logistics and Infiltration Android) played by Ivanna Sakhno goes rogue and starts hunting down the people who created her, Gemma and Cady are warned that they might be next And that's when M3GAN gets her epic comeback, now with an upgraded body.Together, Gemma and M3GAN learn that AMELIA is part of a larger plot to set free the most advanced AI model in the world from a secret, underground bunker where it is being hidden. They subsequently decide that it's up to them to stop AMELIA from succeeding. In other words, it's up to M3GAN and Gemma to essentially save the world from an AI apocalypse.M3GAN 2.0 leans more into the campiness that made the first film an instant classic, and that works well for it. Plenty of scenes and lines will leave audiences in stitches and have the gays snapping their fingers.Williams is excellent, as always, and takes bigger swings in this film making her role even more fun. The dynamics between Gemma and M3GAN are also more compelling in the sequel than they were in the original feature. One scene, which serves as a callback to the original's scene where M3GAN sings Sia's "Titanium" to Cady as a lullaby, uses an 1980s classic, and is one of the best and funniest scenes in the film.McGraw is also given more to do M3GAN 2.0. Cady's has grown up, and also learned martial arts and self-defense after being terrorized by the killer doll in the first movie. The sequel departs from the horror elements of the first M3GAN film, opting for more action instead, and the results are mostly positive. The new action elements enable M3GAN to shine and help maintain the pace. Still, the film is bogged down by an unnecessary two-hour runtime.Films like M3GAN tend to work best at 90-100 minutes. For instance, the first film comes in at a tight 102 minutes. M3GAN 2.0 runtime reaches 120 minutes, and it does feel like it.Despite its best attempts, this sequel could've, and should've, leaned even more into its campiness and c*ntiness. Instead, it shows Gemma installing an inhibitor chip in the new M3GAN that prevents her from murdering people. The movie's PG-13 rating also serves a similar role in holding back M3GAN from being her full self.M3GAN is c*nty, but because of her rating, she can't say c*nt.Ultimately, M3GAN, Gemma, and Cady are perfect, but M3GAN 2.0 would've benefited from having a better villain. In comparison to M3GAN, AMELIA doesn't really have any personality (which is part of the plot, as her programming is different). But M3GAN deserves a villain who can match her charisma.Still, the M3GAN franchise needs more installments, and I'm eager to see what M3GAN 3.0 has in store for us.Out review: 3/5 stars.M3GAN 2.0 is playing in theaters. 100 entries, nine LGBTQ+ films.A list titled "The 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century" was published by The New York Times this week, and some of our favorite LGBTQ+ films made the cut.The publication polled more than 500 people while compiling this list. The participants were described as people who work in and around around the film industry, such as screenwriters, directors, and actors. The qualified picks span beloved films from the past 25 years, beginning at the turn of the century in 2000.The ranking ranges between classics from directors like Quentin Tarantino and David Fincher, but also includes more indie, non-English features. There are huge surprises, too (looking straight at you, Superbad!) But whether or not you agree with the full list, we're pleased to spotlight the LGBTQ+ picks that made it onto the list.Scroll through to see the nine queer films that made this list from The New York Times. And honorable mentions: Mulholland Drive, Anatomy of a Fall, Black Swan, and Best in Show are not listed here, but these films made the Times cut and also have prominent queer characters and stories.77. 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' (2022)Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All At Once is an experimental and nihilistic film with a devastating queer story at its heart. In 2023, the movie won the Academy Award for Best Picture A24's first-ever Oscar in the category.72. 'Carol' (2015)Carol is a queer classic directed by Todd Haynes that follows an aspiring photographer as she develops a romantic relationship with an older woman in 1950s New York.67. 'Tr' (2022)Starring Cate Blanchett, Tr is a psychological drama that dives into the world of a female director of a major German orchestra who is accused of sexual misconduct.52. 'The Favourite' (2018)The Favourite tells the story of Queen Anne's fragile day-to-day life being hijacked when she becomes enamored with an alluring new servant who has hidden motives.38. 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' (2019)Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a French film that follows an isolated artist who develops feelings for the subject of a wedding portrait she's been hired to paint.37. 'Call Me By Your Name' (2017)Call Me By Your Name is a sweepingly romantic and also devastatingly film that beautifully captures the yearning, steamy sensuality, and heartache attached to a doomed first love. 18. 'Y Tu Mam Tambin' (2001)Though likely not regarded as queer at the time of its release, Y Tu Mam Tambin is a sensual Mexican film that follows two teenage boys who fall for an older woman while exploring their sexuality together.17. 'Brokeback Mountain' (2005)Brokeback Mountain might've lost the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2006, but this iconic story of two cowboys falling madly for each other in a world that despised them has cemented itself as one of the best love stories of all time. 5. 'Moonlight' (2016)As one of only two LGBTQ+ films on this list that won the Oscar for Best Picture, Moonlight is an aching meditation on the toll of masculinity and repression in a hostile world, while still searching for softness and love.

Don Bachardy reflects on his artfully queer life
Don Bachardy, a living legend of the art world and a queer icon, at age 91, is finally getting his long-deserved, first museum show: Don Bachardy: A Life in Portraits. Running until August 4, this extraordinary retrospective at The Huntington in San Marino, California, showcases over 100 of his instantly recognizable portraits from a prolific seven-decade career in which he gave life to luminaries of the artistic world as well as friends, lovers, and himself in brutally honest self-portraits.I feel lucky to have once sat for Bachardy in his Santa Monica home, a time capsule overflowing with paintings and mementos from his exceptional yet tumultuous 33-year relationship with Christopher Isherwood, author of landmark books such as Goodbye to Berlin (which inspired the play and film Cabaret) and A Single Man. Don Bachardy, Self-portrait, acrylic on paper, 29 23 in. Don Bachardy Papers. The Huntington. Don Bachardy, 2018.Courtesy The HuntingtonBachardy was 18 when he crystallized his relationship with the 48-year-old Isherwood on Valentines Day, 1953. Their lives and careers, captured in the deeply moving documentary Chris and Don: A Love Story, were intertwined from that day until Isherwood died in 1986.Bachardys masterworks remained critically under-recognized for much of his career in the towering shadow of Isherwood, whose 1976 memoir Christopher and His Kind cemented his status as a key figure in the gay liberation movement. Bachardy, however, doesnt seem to mind. At the Huntingtons opening, he hadnt lost a scintilla of his unique voice or the sparkle in his eyes. When I mentioned how great he looked, Bachardy responded with a mischievous smile that hes not bad for 86, shaving five years from his age. He also gushed about his upcoming documentary, Face to Face: Don Bachardy.Don with Marilyn Monroe. Taken by Ted Bachardy, 1952, 3 3 in. Don Bachardy Papers. The Huntington. Courtesy The Huntington The exhibition makes clear how Bachardys career was hugely influenced by Hollywood. Ingrained as his first film memory was seeing Bette Daviss Jezebel when he was 4 years old. Bachardy and his brother Ted Bachardy spent their teenage years sneaking into premieres in the hope of meeting movie stars. A 1951 snapshot shows Don Bachardy, at 16, glowing beside Marilyn Monroe.Bachardy began drawing idealized portraits of celebrities from movie magazines. That all changed when Isherwood offered to be his first live sitter. The resulting portrait was far from flattering, but it was truthful, wrinkles and all, capturing Isherwoods aura. Bachardy was hooked. From that moment on, he would only do live portraits. Don Bachardy, Letter to Christopher Isherwood, 9 5 15/16 in. The Huntington. Don Bachardy, 1964.Courtesy The HuntingtonIts estimated that Bachardy has created over 17,000 portraits to date. Each subject, from Bette Davis to Angelina Jolie, sat for hours for Bachardys laser-focused eyes. The unparalleled ocean views, paired with the sitters vulnerability and exhaustion, evoke an almost spiritual experience that reveals their likeness and their soul. Bachardy often asks the sitter to cosign the portrait as his collaborator.Hundreds of these portraits are Bachardys unflinching depictions of Isherwood as he was deteriorating from cancer. It began to seem that dying was something which we were doing together, Bachardy wrote in his diary.Ahead, Bachardy reflects on his life and career as part of this authors project on queer art history, which can be found on Instagram @breakingthegaycodeinart. David Hockney.Courtesy The HuntingtonI have goose bumps sitting in the same chairs where you and Isherwood posed for David Hockneys exceptionally rare portrait of an openly gay couple in 1968. How did this seminal painting come about? When Hockney first arrived to Los Angeles, Chris was the first person he called. Hockney was fascinated by my relationship with Chris, and he suggested doing a double portrait. He came to the house, did some drawings, and started painting in his studio nearby. Chriss figure in the painting is very fresh; you can see it was done in one go. Mine, however, is much thicker because by the time he got to it, I was in London, and I couldnt pose for him. I dont think he was ever satisfied with my portrait. Bette Davis, graphite and ink on paper, 291/8 23 1/8in. Don Bachardy Papers. The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens. Don Bachardy, 1973.Courtesy The HuntingtonHow important is your queerness in your work?Being gay is the basic condition of my being an artist. Its through my queerness that everything I regard beneficial in my life has come to me, including Chris Isherwood. How did you feel about Isherwood when you first met him?Its a mystery to me how, when I met him at 18, I had the sense to realize that he was like nobody else Id met and that everything he was telling me was true and important to my growth into adulthood. I tormented him with questions, but he was endlessly patient until I got it in my head. Chris was the best father figure, guide, and role model I could possibly have had. Christopher Isherwood, acrylic on paper, 26 20 in. Don Bachardy Papers. The Huntington. Don Bachardy, 1979.Courtesy The HuntingtonHow much did Christopher influence you as an artist? When I told him I wanted to be a movie star, he didnt mock me, but he constantly prodded me to be an artist, encouraging me to go to art school. Our intimacy was the best lesson. He was completely truthful in his writing, and he taught me to be the same in my art. He introduced me to stars like Montgomery Clift, Marlene Dietrich, and Natalie Wood, who would later pose for me. I was awestruck! It was he who made it possible for me to be an artist. Crystal Martin, acrylic on paper, 26 20 in. Howarth & Smith Collection. The Huntington. Don Bachardy, 2003.Courtesy The HuntingtonWho was your biggest influence as an artist?Francis Bacon. His portraits were so wild and expressionistic, like nobody elses. I was so worried about capturing the truth in my work that I didnt add any expressionistic touches until I felt comfortable as an artist. Bacons face was one of the greatest Ive ever looked into. The portrait I did of him in 1961 is among my best. You had an interesting relationship with photographer George Platt Lynes.I met George when Chris and I flew to New York on my Christmas vacation from UCLA. My first time on a plane! George asked Chris if he could photograph me. I was so excited. George was still so attractive, with silver hair, suave and sophisticated. He asked me to wear white sailor pants. I remember him pinning them at the shoot because he felt they werent tight enough. James Baldwin, pencil and ink, 29 23 in. Don Bachardy Papers. The Huntington. Don Bachardy, 1964.Courtesy The HuntingtonChris owned some of Georges gorgeous male nude photographs. I had sworn to Chris that I would never pose nude for George, but the minute George suggested I take the sailor pants off, they fell to the floor without a moments hesitation. [Laughs] I was already a little bit in love with George. He flattered me up to the skies and, at 19, that was irresistible.Youve painted hundreds of male nudes, many of them in odalisque poses; however, I wouldnt necessarily describe them as homoerotic would you agree?Im both pleased and mystified that you dont find them homoerotic because Im certainly wildly turned on by many of the young and old nude men I painted. Drawing from life implies depicting my model as truthfully as possible. I dont give into my homoeroticism, but I certainly use it when I render my favorite parts: penises and faces. However, I need to be objective; its all important to me. Warhol did a great drawing of Chriss beautiful feet. I regret not having done one myself.Ignacio Darnaude, an art scholar and lecturer, is currently developing the docuseries Hiding in Plain Sight: Breaking the Queer Code in Art. Plastique Tiara surpasses Trixie Mattel, becomes most-followed 'Drag Race' star
Plastique Tiara has now become the most-followed queen on Instagram within the entire RuPaul's Drag Race franchise surpassing All Stars 3 winner Trixie Mattel, who spent several years at the top of the ranking.Sign up for the Out Newsletter to keep up with what's new in LGBTQ+ culture and entertainment delivered three times a week straight (well) to your inbox! As of Monday, June 30, Plastique has officially become the most-followed Drag Race queen on Instagram with an audience of 4.32 million followers.Even though Trixie is on the cusp of crossing 4.3 million followers, Plastique's huge social media momentum is already placing the Vietnamese queen and All Stars 9 competitor in the No. 1 spot with a comfortable lead.In July 2024, Plastique became the second most-followed RuGirl on Instagram briefly tying with Katya as they both reached 2.7 million IG followers. While Trixie was still taking her notorious break for a few months in 2024, the All Stars 3 winner made herstory by crossing the 4-million mark of Instagram followers, becoming the first-ever Drag Race alum to do so.It certainly felt inconceivable that any other queen Plastique, Katya, or whoever else! would catch up to Trixie in the near future, that notion was quickly challenged when Plastique increased her Instagram audience to 3 million fans in February 2025. Up until then, Trixie was the only RuGirl to cross the 3-million mark (and subsequent 4-million mark) of Instagram followers But she wasn't sitting alone in that VIP any longer. And just like that, it happened! In April 2025, Plastique crossed 4 million Instagram followers and got very close to surpassing Trixie. Two months later and during last few days of Pride Month Plastique is officially at the very top of this ranking.RuPaul's Drag Race is available for streaming on Paramount+.

Elliot Page seemingly hard launches his new girlfriend on Instagram
Elliot Page closed out Pride weekend with an Instagram post that needed only two emojis to make his point. In the photo, Page and Overcompensating actress and comic Julia Shiplett leaning into each other in matching dark jackets and sunglasses, the pavement beneath them painted in vivid rainbow stripes, was captioned simply with a rainbow and a double heart emoji. Within minutes, everyone had the same takeaway: the Umbrella Academy star just hard-launched his first public relationship since transitioning in 2020.For Page, 38, the reveal marks a new public chapter after several very private ones. He came out as transgender in December 2020, divorced dancer Emma Portner five months later, and wrote candidly in his 2023 memoir Pageboy about past relationships with Kate Mara, Olivia Thirlby, and an unnamed closeted actress. Last summer, he told the Los Angeles Times that post-transition dating felt the most fun Ive ever had, crediting a newfound ease in his body for deeper connections. Saturdays grin seems to prove it.See on InstagramShiplett, best known for her dry-as-dust turns in Prime Videos queer rom-com Overcompensating and cult favorites High Maintenance and Love Life, seemingly confirmed the news in equally word-sparse fashion. Her Instagram Story showed Page standing shirtless in a steaming hot spring, the caption reading, Happy prideee . (@) Shiplett, 38, has also built a stand-up following by skewering bisexual panic, awkward hookups, and millennial ennuimaterial that dovetails neatly with Pages dry humor. The pair has so far kept specifics offline, and representatives for both declined to comment. Still, the timing of the post on Prides final weekend reads like a deliberate love letter to the community that has championed Pages journey from Juno breakout to trans icon.Until we see them on a red carpet or trading giggles in someone elses selfie, that single rainbow road will have to suffice. But for now, Pride 2025 ends with a reminder that queer joy and a well-placed emoji can light up an entire feed.

Chinese police arrest dozens of gay erotica writers in pornography crackdown
Dozens of writers have been arrested in China this year for publishing gay erotica online as law enforcement's crackdown on pornography increasingly targets LGBTQ+ stories. Police have arrested as many as 50 writers in Gansu in the past several weeks, according to The New York Times, which spoke with two lawyers representing detained authors who said they knew of at least six other cases. Other attorneys told the BBC that at least 30 writers, nearly all of them women in their 20s, have been arrested across the country since February. Many of the writers were arrested after publishing on the Taiwan-based adult fiction website Haitang Literature, which allows authors to earn money through tips and subscriptions. One of the most popular genres on the website is "danmei" romantic and sexual relationships between men. Some of the writers have come forward about their arrests on the social media platform Weibo only to be censored or taken down. One woman wrote, as first reported by the BBC, "I'll never forget it being escorted to the car in full view, enduring the humiliation of stripping naked for examination in front of strangers, putting on a vest for photos, sitting in the chair, shaking with fear, my heart pounding."The production and distribution of pornographic materials is illegal in China based on a 1997 law that defines obscene material as publications, films, video and audio recordings, and images containing depictions of sexual acts." Writers who make more than 250,000 yuan ($34,500) from selling erotic materials face a maximum sentence of life in prison. The law, which applies even to writers making little or no money off their work, has not been consistently enforced. It has been used to shut down not just other fanfiction and erotica websites with those running the platforms receiving sentences of up to 12 years in prison but also to prosecute individuals consuming pornography in the privacy of their homes.More than 50 writers were detained in the province of Anhui from June to January by a special task force assigned with targeting online distributors of erotic fiction. Some of the top authors on Haitang Literature received varying sentences of one to five years in prison, differences being based on whether or not the writers were able to pay back the money they earned."If I could go back, I'd still choose to write. And I will keep writing," another writer said on Weibo. "Right now, I can only hope the law will see beyond the words on the page - and see the girl who skipped meals to save money, the girl who sold her hair to buy a pen, the girl who believed her mind could carve a way through fate. I hope it gives all of us a fair chance."

  • Richie On The Bear Fx Show
    WWW.OUT.COM
Why 'The Bear' is queerer than it seems
FX's The Bear released its third season last week, and as any fan of the show can attest, it stirs up a range of emotions frustration, stress, anxiety (and hunger!). However, for me, one emotion is pride. Over the last three seasons, I felt myself getting choked up watching the show. The lump in my throat didn't start forming at the parts you would think like Natalie (Abby Elliot) giving birth and having a heartwarming moment with her mom, Donna (Jamie Lee Curtis), or the moment Donna decides not to attend the restaurant's opening night. It was the pride of having been a hospitality worker and watching Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) go through a similar journey of self-discovery as he fell in love with working in the restaurant industry, just as I did, and the innately queer idea of finding a chosen family. As a character, Richie has been the misunderstood outsider. And while he is not queer (none of the characters in The Bear are as of yet), the idea of chosen family is. After immerses himself in the art of fine dining and gets taken under the wing of the employees at the restaurant he trained at, he discovers confidence, a purpose, and even safety. He finally felt understood after his formal training, when he learned what the foundations of hospitality are and why restaurants go to great lengths to make sure guests have the best experience possible. This point of found family is underscored in episode 3 when Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) is talking to Marcus (Lionel Boyce) and says, "Theres probably one really true thing about restaurants: Youre never alone." This familial aspect of working in a restaurant becomes evident through this most recent season, an aspect that doesn't really get considered when it comes to mainstream coverage of this show. For those who've worked in a restaurant, you know that when you're immersed in a high-pressure environment like this, especially in fine dining, the bond is as quick as it is strong. I worked as a host/matre d' in the restaurant world for five years at nine different restaurants across New York City, and the stories I have are enough to fill a book. The work was hard, the hours were grueling, I stood on my feet (in dress shoes) for 10-plus hours a day, and there was rarely a night where an angry guest wouldn't take their frustrations out on me. But more often than not, it was rewarding to give someone the best experience with just a few simple actions.I was also lucky that I had a manager who fiercely protected her employees and treated us like her kids sometimes, so we'd call her our restaurant mom. She would tell us when she was disappointed not to scold but to help us learn to not make the same mistake again. She advocated for her employees to upper management. And when she left, she still looked out for us and got us jobs at her new restaurant. In some ways, Jess (Sarah Ramos) the stern, yet good-natured fine dining employee Richie poaches to join the Bear and is helping to get the team in shape reminds me of my restaurant mom. From her, we learned hand gestures, terminology, how to take care of regulars, how to write down notes about what the guests like (such as having sparkling water ready on the table upon arrival), and how to handle high-pressure situations (though, I admittedly wasnt always the best with that). On top of that, she made us feel safe, because she believed in her employees and advocated for us, gave us opportunities to prove ourselves, and helped us work towards our goals.I've met some of my best friends while working in a restaurant, some of whom I've known for almost 10 years. At the last job I held before leaving the restaurant industry for good, I worked at a Vietnamese shop called Madame Vo. The owners are a husband and wife duo whom I love dearly, and we still message each other to celebrate each others wins. This environment made it so much harder to leave the industry, because they fostered such a familial vibe, which really helped the employees get along better, therefore making the flow of the restaurant (most of the time) seamless.Corporate America can be cold, distant, and many of the owners of these major businesses are not people who form personal relationships with their thousands of employees. There, its definitely not advisable to see the teams you work with as your family because of the volatility of the job market and decisions will be made with the bottom line in mind. But in a restaurant, thats very much not the case (unless you work at a chain restaurant). The owners and managers (good ones at least) are positive forces of change in their employees lives. The more a business feels safe and familiar, the better chance it has at success.Which is what we see in this most recent season of The Bear a chosen family working together to form a well-oiled machine. If one part malfunctions, the whole thing comes crashing down, which is why we see Richie and the group help each other with personal issues and lean on each other for support throughout the series. This found family is what helps them succeed in life and it's a recipe for success in business as well.Moises Mendez II is a writer with Out magazine. Follow him on Instagram @moisesfenty. • Tiny Chef Needs Your Help Video
    WWW.OUT.COM
Tiny Chef is a queer iconand he needs our help
The queer community loves to adopt an icon. They don't need to be overtly queer; these figures just need to have the essence of queerness. Over the years, we've taken in the Babadook, the killer AI doll M3GAN, and the green M&M, among other notable characters. As a member of queer media, I propose that we embrace a new queer icon a small, felt stop-motion character with a rainbow apron, currently capturing the hearts of millions Tiny Chef.Last Tuesday, the Tiny Chef TikTok account (where he originally gained a following before being picked up by Nickelodeon) uploaded a video of the title character answering a call from Nickelodeon. He excitedly tells the network that he has so many ideas he wants to execute before he's cut off, only to be told that The Tiny Chef Show has been cancelled after three seasons. Even through his garbled English, you can feel all of the big emotions in his tiny little body. "But we won an Emmy," he says, looking defeated as he wipes away his tears. Tiny Chef goes on to ask what will happen to his teammates and friends before accepting his fate and hanging up the phone. He puts his face in his hands and cries as he sits on his bed. @thetinychefshow SOS Cheffers, please go to the link our bio to learn how you can help us keep Chef on social media. Tiny chefs cooking show has officially been cancelled (very unexpected) and without the support of a major network we need crowd funding to keep cookin over here. Yesh this es weal! We want to thank @nickelodeon for giving Chef two blamazing seasons and all the besties he made there. Chef wouldnt want anyone to blame his friends over there, hes just deeply sad he doesnt get to continue hosting a show he adores. Please let cheffy know how much he means to you in the comments hes really feelin this one. While I don't think Tiny Chef is inherently queer, something about his character screams gay. Maybe it's his mannerisms, the sass with which he delivers his semi-understandable garbling, or the over-the-top feelings he puts on display. He is the strongest contender for the next queer icon and he needs our help.In less than a week, the aforementioned video garnered over nine million views and over 1.6 million likes on TikTok alone. The video circulated on social media platforms, including X and Instagram. He was met with an onslaught of support from commenters who were mad at Nickelodeon for making this adorable little creature cry. "I dont know him, but you did not just make him cry like that; you should apologize to him," one person wrote in the comments. "We ride at dawn! NOBODY makes tiny chef cry!!" another person commented. On Thursday, the account shared an update video of how Tiny Chef was doing after the devastating news. The video featured a shattered Tiny Chef in his rainbow apron playing "Paint It, Black" by the Rolling Stones on a banjo with his back turned to the camera. 'Drag Race's Naysha Lopez claps back at Violet Chachki & Gottmik's Roscoe's shade
RuPaul's Drag Race superstars Violet Chachki and Gottmik released a spicy new episode of No Gorge, their joint podcast, on Thursday, June 26. While the two drag artists explore various topics on this new episode, certain negative remarks from the episode are making the rounds within the Drag Race fandom and queendom. For instance, this new No Gorge episode features Violet bringing up different tangents related to her season 7 costars like Trixie Mattel, Katya, and Ginger Minj. Meanwhile, Gottmik gets candid about her Snatch Game-winning impersonation of Paris Hilton. There's also a surprising (and random) mention of Roscoe's Tavern a prominent queer venue in Chicago that's been a staple of the LGBTQ+ community since 1987 that comes up in the No Gorge episode. After catching wind of the comments made by Violet and Gottmik about Roscoe's, Naysha Lopez made space in the All Stars 10 episode 9 viewing party live-stream to defend the venue and clap back at the comments made on No Gorge. Here's our full breakdown and timeline explaining this new RuPaul's Drag Race drama. New episodes of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 10 are released every Friday on Paramount+.Gottmik warns fans that the Paris Hilton impersonation is going away.See on InstagramQuotes always make more sense when they're presented with some context, so let's unpack the polarizing quotes from Violet and Gottmik in their latest episode of No Gorge which was titled "We Have an Announcement and Were Losing Our Minds."It all starts with Gottmik warning fans that the Snatch Game-winning impersonation of Paris Hilton will be sunsetting in the near future. "We're filming this pod and then I'm going to the airport. I'm going to be Paris Hilton for a month," Gottmik says on No Gorge. "You guys, this is the last time. I cannot do this anymore. That was years ago."For context, Gottmik is referencing the Snatch Game Live on Tour by ITD Events, which starts this Wednesday, July 2 at the Llewellyn Hall in Australia. The tour will also feature Drag Race stars like Hannah Conda (as Liza Minnelli), Jimbo (as Shirley Temple), Jujubee (as Eartha Kitt), Pythia (as Zeus), Tia Kofi (as Anne Boleyn), and Trinity The Tuck (as Caitlyn Jenner). Drag Race Down Under judge Rhys Nicholson will be hosting the event."I literally texted our manager today and I was like, 'What the fuck Rick and Morty-ass timeline happened that I'm a professional Paris Hilton impersonator?'" Gottmik notes, jokingly. "That is so embarrassing."Violet replies, "The Drag Race thing, I fear, is going to haunt us for the rest of our lives."Violet Chachki jokingly complains that even her barber wants to talk about 'All Stars 10' and Ginger Minj.Violet explains, "I got my haircut todayThat's like my one little self-care thing. [But] it's June. I'm ran through. It's Pride Month, so I got to do my self-care momentMy barber's like, 'So have you been watching the latest season?' And I'm like [Violet makes a face]."The Drag Race season 7 winner clarifies, "I love my barber. He's a gay bear. Butit's been 11 fucking years [since season 7], and because there's drama going on now on the show""What is the drama?" Gottmik asks.Violet says, "The drama is about Ginger [Minj]. I can't even I'm so annoyed.""I saw," Gottmik replies. "Vanjie actually sent me a clip of it the other day, and I was so scared because I was like, 'Why did she send that to me?' Because she never sends me Drag Race stuff. I was like, 'Oh my god, am I like mentioned? Was Denali going off on Roscoe's or something?'"Violet Chachki and Gottmik discuss Roscoe's viewing parties and the queens who attend them. After realizing that the clip from Roscoe's Tavern has nothing to do with either of the No Gorge cohosts, Violet starts discussing Roscoe's itself. "Girl, Roscoe's is like" Violet starts, laughing. "I can't, I can't, I can't," she adds. While Gottmik appears to be avoiding that conversation, the season 13 finalist and All Stars 9 contestant circles back to that discourse right away. "I mean, that actually needs to be studied," Mik observes. "Some of these girls are ready to risk it all""Risk it all to sit on a fucking patio chair at some fucking bar," Violet argues. The No Gorge cohosts speak over each other during the next few seconds, but Violet alleges that queens accept these invitations even though "the bar is monetizing boots" on the tea they're spilling through the Roscoe's viewing parties live-streams. Gottmik adds, "And doesn't pay them to monetizeIt's wild."Violet repeats, "The bar is monetizing boots on y'all basically spilling the tea. Get a podcast, girl. Why are you letting them monetize all the tea?""No, it's so crazy to me," Gottmik comments. "Stop doing that," Violet adds.Gottmik explains why queens supposedly 'risk it all' by attending viewing parties at Roscoe's.See on InstagramGottmik circles back to the argument that queens "are ready to risk it all" by taking these viewing party gigs at Roscoe's. "Literally stop risking your careers for Roscoe's," the season 13 star declares before bursting out laughing."Stop risking your careers for Roscoe's," Violet agrees. "We should make t-shirts."They both laugh again.Violet Chachki reveals that she's 'catching strays' on social media because Ginger Minj is competing on 'All Stars 10.'Violet rationalizes that she's "catching strays" from All Stars 10 because her social media algorithm is showing her "Drag Race stuff about Ginger."Violet continues, "And people are basically tagging me or I'm seeing stuff saying that I shouldn't have won [season 7] 10 or 11 years ago, and that she [Ginger] should've won."Even though Violet seems annoyed by the algorithm showing her more "Drag Race stuff," Gottmik hilariously interrupts Violet to ask if Ginger was on her original season. (And yes, she was. That season's top 3 finale was between Ginger Minj, Pearl, and Violet Chachki. In the end, Violet was crowned America's Next Drag Superstar.)"And now people think Ginger should've have won your season?" Gottmik asks.Violet replies," Yes, instead of being on Drag Race 17 times."Gottmik asks "who else" was in the top 3 of season 7. Violet reminds Gottmik that it was Pearl, and they briefly reference the "Is there something on my face?" moment between Pearl and RuPaul in the Werk Room.Violet Chachki comments on Trixie Mattel and Katya hosting an upcoming recap of season 7.See on Instagram"Also, Trixie and Katya are doing a Ru-watch of season 7," Violet brings up. "They wanted me to [be a part of it]." However, the crowned queen of season 7 explains why she feels that the invitation from Trixie and Katya was "so weird.""They had their assistant send me a DM asking me if I would send them a voice [recording]," Violet says. "It was like, 'What the fuck?' You guys, call me. You have my fucking phone."Violet adds, "Having your assistant reach out when you're friends with somebody is so like 'Who do you think you are, girl?' Text me!""No, they do it all the time," Gottmik responds. "I think they're probably forced, against their will."Violet says, "It's so weird. I would never have my assistant or producer reach out to someone I consider a friend. It's so weird. Anyways"This portion of the No Gorge episode ends with Violet complaining that she "cannot escape" the ongoing Drag Race discourse. She muses, "Am I going to be like 50 fucking years old, and will I have to get plastic surgery to change how I look, [because] I just want to get my haircut?"Naysha Lopez claps back at Violet Chachki and Gottmik's remarks about Roscoe's.See on InstagramToward the end of this Roscoe's Tavern viewing party covering All Stars 10 episode 9 which featured Alyssa Hunter and Kween Kong as special guests and took place just one day after this latest episode of No Gorge was released on YouTube Naysha Lopez declares that she's been given "the green light to express my mind.""All jokes aside, I've been calling them Tweedledee and Tweedledum, and I can really go in[But] I won't do that. I'm talking about Violet and Gottmik, two of the nicest queens from RuPaul's Drag Race," Naysha starts. "They have a podcast. They do a thing. Blah blah blah, whatever. And they were saying that they don't understand why queens risk their entire careers and come on Roscoe's and, you know, give the tea, and this and that, and blah blah blah."The former Miss Continental winner and All Stars 8 star continues, "Two things: When they come here First off, this is one of the best places you could ever work. Ever. Every single queen that works here is treated like the queen that they are. The implication that they're coming here and we're just making money off them Baby, every single one of these people up here is getting a check. Every single person is getting paid.""For someone to say, 'Why would you risk your career giving the tea?'" Naysha adds. "Correct me if I'm wrong on the numbers, but I'm gonna say about 90, 95 percent of the girls that have ever been on Drag Race come through this stage, and not one career has been ruined. Not one. And this goes for every single person that says I talk too much Because yes, I do."Naysha goes on, "But if you notice, whenever I interject or start talking about something, it's because they [Naysha points to Alyssa and Kween to illustrate the point that queens starring in ongoing seasons are likely limited within the scope of what they can and cannot say.] When we have girls up there, I tell them what they can't say, and how they should word it: Their opinions, their feelings.""I've been on the show. I've read the contract. I know what you can and cannot do," she argues. "We're aware of it. You are not at risk for losing your career. On the contrary, we're giving you a platform to be yourself, to tell your side. And if the show did not highlight who you are as a person, I'm glad that for 2 hours and 30 minutes, you can do it right here."As the audience claps, cohost Batty Davis says that many queens have gotten redemption from the fandom by appearing on Roscoe's. "No one is here because they're forced to," Naysha points out. "Every single girl from that last season, it has now become, 'I got on Drag Race. When do I go to Roscoe's?' It's a thing.""No disrespect to Violet and her little minion At all," Naysha concludes. "But when you're gonna say little things like this: Mean what you say, and say what you mean. Don't imply, because that's just lying.""And not to mention Have we had them on this stage?" Naysha asks. Batty responds that yes, they have. Naysha adds, "Yes, we have. They've been through Roscoe's. They know what's up."Did Violet Chachki and Gottmik ever do a Roscoe's viewing party live-stream?Violet and Gottmik were featured in a Roscoe's Tavern viewing party live-stream from May 28, 2022. That evening, cohosts Naysha and Batty, along with special guests Violet and Gottmik, watched episode 3 of All Stars 7, a.k.a. the all-winners season.Within the first 15 minutes of the live-stream, Naysha pointedly asked Violet and Gottmik about the response they had been receiving from fans as the two special cohosts of Fashion Photo RuView for the all-winners season of Drag Race.In case you don't remember: From the very first episode of that Fashion Photo RuView season, Violet and Gottmik received tons of scrutiny for negatively critiquing certain outfits worn by fan-favorite contestants. The fan response was particularly intense when Violet shared negative opinions about a look from Raja.On that particular Roscoe's viewing party live-stream, Violet and Gottmik got to speak their minds and share their side of the story even though they had already launched their joint No Gorge podcast at the time. Nonetheless, their statements at Roscoe's made the rounds on social media and helped diffuse the incredibly unfair but very intense wave of negativity they had been receiving for just expressing their opinions on runway looks.Editor's note: As of this writing, none of the queens mentioned in this story have shared additional comments about this situation.RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 10 drops new episodes every Friday on Paramount+.

Laid off Grindr workers are fighting to get their jobs back
Almost two years after Grindr laid off 82 out of 178 employees 46 percent of the staff the union of workers for the company announced that it is still fighting for its laid-off members to regain their jobs. The union even started a fundraising campaign to help support the employees who are still out of work.Sign up for the Out Newsletter to keep up with what's new in LGBTQ+ culture and entertainment delivered three times a week straight (well) to your inbox! The union, named Grindr United, updated members of its continued fight in a statement shared toward the end of June, which was stylized as a conversation between two Grindr users in an attempt to get more people to pay attention to the cause. This mockup of back and forth Grindr DMs deliver new details about the case. Namely, that "Grindr workers tried to unionize so we could have a seat at the table and fight for an app that serves our community. Management forced us out, and now we are 18 months into a legal process to get our jobs back."This stylized statement ends with the union writing, "If you can, we're fundraising for those of us still without work." (@) Grindr, a social network and app often used for hooking up and dating among queer people, has faced a slew of criticisms after George Arison, a gay businessman, took over as CEO in September 2022. Since then, the company's leader has been the subject of controversy after past X posts (formerly tweets) came to the surface and reportedly showed him potentially agreeing with some of Trump's policies, as well as voicing support for an anti-LGBTQ+ Virginia governor were unearthed. In October 2022 right as the company was preparing to go public on the stock market X posts (tweets) from Arison's past about conservative politicians were unearthed. In 2020, he reportedly shared posts identifying himself as a conservative, and even "agrees with some of Trump's policies." Reports also include Arison showing support for a conservative politician who was targeting rights for LGBTQ+ kids. After those X posts were made public, Grindr shared a statement to TIME that read, "George is an out gay man, proudly married to his husband and the father of two children. George is passionate about fighting for the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ people around the world."Arison navigated the negative press in a way that left him relatively unscathed, but also implemented a rigorous use of AI and boasted about running a "super lean company" with a "high revenue per head" on a podcast called 20VC (included below). @20vc_tok This company earns $2M per employee! #20VC with Grindr CEO George Arison. Link in bio. #HarryStebbings #Business #businessadvice #businesstips #entrepreneur #entrepreneurship #founder #ceo #businessstories #Grindr #startup Arison has openly discussed a push toward AI, reasoning that he expects that start-ups can get off the ground with "much less" employees than previously needed thanks to the help of "synthetic employees."Out reached out to Grindr United and to the actual company, Grindr, for comment. Neither party has responded as of this writing.

You're our favorite "Trailer Park Barbie," and remind us why we love cowgirls so much.We love your sexy and fun version of pop country, and songs like "Buckle Bunny" end up on repeat at our house all the time. Your new song "Snakeskin" has been one of our favorite songs this year. We all gagged when you joined Beyonc on "BLACKBIIRD" in an iconic moment in music history. You're forever a part of that, girl! You've been paving the way for Black women in country for years, and now that you've come out as pansexual, you're proudly representing a new community that loves you. You're also one of our favorite fashion icons right now. We're looking for some new snakeskin boots. Maybe you can show us where you get yours?Thank you, Tanner, for always being yourself and for sharing your genuine self with the world and your fans!Jools LebronSee on InstagramHi, diva! Jools, you're not like the other girls. We owe you everything for teaching us all how to be demure and mindful last year. Without your guidance, we would've been lost while doing everything from traveling, getting dressed for work, and going to job interviews.Your advice and wise words were so ubiquitous, "demure" was Dictionary.com's word of the year. You know you're that bitch when even Ralph Fiennes is quoting you.We love a femme princess, and you are internet royalty! You put the beauty in beauty influencer. You know what's cutesy, Jools? You!We also appreciate the way you represent and lift up the dolls. When you used some of your money to help your bestie get housing, you showed us how big your heart is. In your TikToks, you taught us not to do too much, so we'll end it here. We love you, Jools.Keke PalmerSee on InstagramKeke Palmer, you are an icon of icons and a queen of queens. From your time as a child and teen star to your successful transition into adult stardom, you always impress us. We will always know who you are, Keke, and we will always love you.Josie TotahSee on InstagramDear Josie, we promise we would never ask you out on a hiking date! When you played Lexi on Saved by the Bell (for which you got a much-deserved Critic's Choice nomination!), we got a taste of your acting powers, giving us one of the best TV reboots ever. And we love you so much as Mabel on The Buccaneers! You bring humor and lightness, and some great lesbian spirit to the historical romantic drama based on Edith Wharton's unfinished book, and now that it's back on, we can't wait to see you in it every week. Thank you for making trans girls' wildest lesbian period romance dreams come true!We also love you when you're being yourself! Along with your fellow dolls, Dylan Mulvaney and Miss Benny, you're living the modern Sex and the City life of our queer dreams.Next up, you're starring in the horror film Faces of Death and Mike Flanagan's new adaptation of Carrie, so we can't wait to cheer you on as a new scream queen.Aulii CravalhoSee on InstagramAuli'i, you're so much more than just a Disney princess to us.Of course, we love you as a more grown-up Moana in the billion-dollar smash hit Moana 2, and we're so proud that you're lifting up your community by producing the live-action Moana and giving another actress a chance to embody the role. But it's been your work outside of that massive franchise that really got us to love you. You played cool high school characters that queer teens can totally relate to in Crush and 2024's Mean Girls. In Mean Girls, you got to make Janice the queer icon she was always meant to be! Thank you for giving the weirdos the representation they deserve. And can we talk about how great you are on stage? First, you dazzled as Eva Peron in Evita, but then you stunned us as the youngest person to play Sally Bowles on Broadway. Auli'i, your smile lights up every room you're in, and we love the way you're never afraid to be yourself. Keep on shining!Maren MorrisSee on InstagramMaren Morris, we'd be more than happy to meet you in the "Middle" any day! We've loved your music for a decade, and we've been inspired by you just as long.We love the way you stand up for the LGBTQ+ community, especially when you stood up to Brittany Aldean's hateful comments about trans kids, and then raised money for GLAAD. When you challenged the country music establishment in 2023, we loved the way you stood up for what you know to be right. Then, in 2024, when you came out as bisexual, you made us even more proud that you are a part of our community and that we can look up to you whenever we want to see a proud, queer woman. You're a Grammy winner, you're a master of multiple genres, and you're just getting started. "My Church" is one of our favorite songs of all time, and as one of the Highwomen, you're a part of the greatest supergroup in Country Music. You're a legend, Maren, and we hope you feel like it!Isabela MercedSee on InstagramThis year on The Last of Us, the whole world got to see how great you are, Isabela Merced. Just like Ellie was falling for your character Dinah, we fell in love with you while watching! You brought new dimensions to the character, and your real-life queerness added genuine heart to their dynamic, creating one of our favorite TV romances of the year. Even though you're young, you're one of our favorite pop culture Mommies thanks to your roles in The Last of Us and Alien: Romulus, where you made us jump out of our skin.Thank you for representing queer Latinas everywhere. We love how proud you are of your culture, and you help us take pride in ours. You're blowing up, and we can't wait to see you this summer in Superman as one of our favorite superheroes, Hawkgirl. You're our hero, Isabela!Catherine McCaffertySee on InstagramCatherine McCafferty, we'd love to go on a pretty gay date with you!We are huge fans of your show Pretty Gay, where you go on first dates with some of our other favorite queer and lesbian celebs and comedians. Every time you pop up on our social media feeds, we know we're going to love it. We're suckers for a good clown, and you never fail to make us cackle. But you also make us think! Not only are you one of the funniest people online, but you're shining a spotlight on critical lesbian issues like scissoring, having crushes on your friends, and how to tell if another girl is flirting with us!You're both an excellent date and an excellent interviewer two qualities that are much rarer than you might think! In all seriousness, you're doing a great job at demystifying the world of sapphic dating, making it better and less intimidating for all of us! Thank you for giving us all great examples of how hilarious and amazing queer dating can be!

  • Elio Disney Pixar Movie
    WWW.OUT.COM
Queer subtext in Disney's 'Elio' was reportedly cut by Pixar
Elio, the adorable new film from Pixar and Disney, is the latest film to have its LGBTQ+ content cut ahead of debuting on the big screen. The first screening of the Elio, viewed in 2023, had an alleged queer subtext to the titular character. However, that storyline is no longer in the movie's final cut according to a story from The Hollywood Reporter.Sign up for the Out Newsletter to keep up with what's new in LGBTQ+ culture and entertainment delivered three times a week straight (well) to your inbox! The reports explain that director Adrian Molina originally crafted Elio in a way that was never meant to be a coming-out story, but did include some of the early signs of queerness for an 11-year-old. Examples brought up in the reports include one scene of Elio collecting trash on the beach and turning it into a pink tank top, then having a "trash-ion show" for a hermit crab. Another scene showed Elio's bedroom with pictures that suggested he had a male crush.Studio executives were allegedly not satisfied with that original cut of Elio. Moreover, viewers who were present for that first screening liked the film but reportedly claimed that they wouldn't go see it in a theater. Molina later screened the film for Pixar leadership, and reportedly left that experience feeling "hurt." He ultimately exited the project in 2024. THR reports that "much of Elio was reworked under new co-directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi." The queer subtext faded and Elio became "more masculine" following feedback from leadership. "It was pretty clear through the production of the first version of the film that [studio leaders] were constantly sanding down these moments in the film that alluded to Elios sexuality of being queer," one anonymous Pixar artist said in the report. "A lot of people like to blame Disney, but the call is coming from inside the house. A lot of it is obeying-in-advance behavior, coming from the higher execs at Pixar."The animated feature grossed an estimated $41.9 million at the domestic box office as of this writing (via IMDb Pro) a very low figure for a Disney/Pixar movie with a reported budget of $150 million. The anonymous Pixar artist who was quoted in the report couldn't help but wonder how it would've performed if Molina's original story had been preserved. "I'd love to ask Pete and the other Disney executives whether or not they thought the rewrite was worth it. Would they have lost this much money if they simply let Adrian tell his story?"Though Elio is quite sweet and heartfelt, it's upsetting to hear that the film is another casualty in the erasing of LGBTQ+ characters and plotlines from Hollywood studios, which Disney has been a significant part of.Elio is now playing in theaters.

Directed by queer director, Desiree Akhavan, and starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Sasha Lane, and Forrest Goodluck, it follows a girl in the '90s who is caught having sex with another girl and sent to conversion therapy camp, where she makes new friends and learns to stand up for herself.Read our review.Streaming on Tubi.14. 'Crush'Crush is a fairly light movie, but that doesnt stop it from delivering a powerful message of happiness and growth for teen lesbians. The movie follows high school lesbian Paige Evans (Rowan Blanchard), who joins her schools track team in order to get closer to her crush. Instead, she starts getting closer to her crushs bisexual sister (Aulii Cravalho). Its a delightfully queer movie that will make you smile, laugh, and sigh.Check out our interview with the stars.Read our review.Streaming on Hulu.13. 'Mosquita y Mari'Queer filmmaker Aurora Guerrero tells the story of two young Latinas as they become close friends and fall in love. Its a rare kind of story that is beautifully told in glances, intimate touches, and shared secrets. Queer Latinas looking for a movie that can speak to them must check out Mosquita y Mari.Currently unavailable to stream in the U.S.12. 'The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love'This 'opposites attract' love story is about 17-year-old tomboy and burnout Randy Dean, who meets a rich girl from her school named Evie Roy. The two start being friends at school, but soon their relationship evolves. While not everyone in their community is accepting, the two girls are able to fight to have a relationship.Check out our interview with the director.Streaming on Netflix.11. 'Princess Cyd'Jessie Pinnick stars as a headstrong 16-year-old who spends the summer in Chicago with her aunt while exploring her sexuality. Pinnick is terrific in the movie, and it never makes Cyds queerness a source of her problems. It simply shows a queer teen having an amazing and life-changing summer.Check out our interview with the director.Streaming on Tubi.10. 'Alice Jnior'This 2019 Brazilian coming-of-age film flew under the radar but definitely deserves your attention. It stars Anna Celestino Mota as Aice, a 17-year-old trans girl and YouTuber who moves from the city to the countryside. Once there, she has to enroll in a Catholic school and starts being bullied while she makes new friends and seeks out her first kiss. Its rare for films to explore the lives of trans women who love women, so this film is truly special.Available to rent on Prime Video.9. 'Blockers'One of the funniest comedies in years is also an absolutely terrific lesbian coming-of-age movie! Gideon Adlon plays Sam, one of three teen girls who make a pact to lose their virginity on prom night. While the other two girls parents want to stop them to protect their daughters, Sams dad (Ike Barinholtz) is on a mission to stop his daughter because he knows shes gay and will regret hooking up with a boy. Its got some serious laughs, as well as some very tender father-daughter moments.Check out our interview with Adlon.Available to rent on Prime Video.8. 'Show Me Love'Also titled F*cking ml, this 90s Swedish classic is about Agnes and Elin, two schoolgirls who, at first, kiss on a dare. Soon, the girls realize they have more in common than they thought, including real feelings for each other. It's a sweet look at young love.Available to rent on Google Play.7. 'Booksmart'Only one of the two lead characters of this movie is gay, but the other is played by queer actor Beanie Feldstein. The queerness of this movie and its overall greatness are enough to put it high on this list. Olivia Wildes feature directorial debut is a hilarious joyride in the vein of Superbad, but for queer girls.Read our review.Available to rent on Prime Video.6. 'The Half of It'Alice Wu is a master of the lesbian movie. With The Half of It, she delivered a stunning and understated triumph with this queer, Asian-American retelling of one of the all-time classic love stories, Cyrano de Bergerac. The film follows teenage Ellie Chu, who writes love letters to the popular girl she has a crush on on behalf of her friend Paul Munsky. All the young actors deliver terrific performances, and the movie will leave you feeling warm inside.Check out our interview with the director.Streaming on Netflix.5. 'Rafiki'Wanuri Kahiu's 2018 Kenyan drama follows two young women, Kena and Ziki, growing up in Nairobi. The two girls are the daughters of local political rivals, but still, a relationship blooms between them. Because homosexuality is illegal in their country, they have to keep their love a secret. While homophobia can be a tired trope in films like this, Rafiki addresses it in a way rarely seen, taking on the issue of criminalized homosexuality that still exists today.Read our review.Streaming on Tubi.4. 'Bottoms'Lesbian coming-of-age movies don't get more raunchy, sleezy, or funny than Bottoms. Starring Rachel Sennott as PJ and Ayo Edebiri as Josie, Bottoms is a teen comedy about a pair of loser lesbians who start a self-defence club at their high school in order to attract girls. It's 92 minutes of pure lesbian chaos and fun, complete with steamy makeouts and over-the-top violence.Read our review.Check out our interview with the director.Available to rent on Prime Video.3. 'I Saw the TV Glow'Viewers might not think of Jane Schoenbrun's 2024 instant horror classic when they hear 'lesbian coming-of-age movie.' However, what else would you call a film about two teen girls who may be in love and are trapped in a hellish alternate reality where they are forced to come of age as awkward teens who feel like they don't belong in their own bodies or lives? How about genius? Jack Haven and Justice Smith deliver compelling performances as teens and young adults (and in Smith's case, an older adult) in this movie that examines the horrors of growing up.Read our review.Check out our interviews with the filmmaker and cast.Streaming on Max.2. 'Pariah'While the tone of Pariah isnt as cheerful as some of the comedies on this list, theres no denying its power and how triumphant it ends up being. Based loosely on director Dee Rees teen years, Pariah follows a 17-year-old Black lesbian learning to embrace her identity and love the life she has. Pariah knows that life can be, and often is, hard on a Black teen lesbian, but it never stops showing how beautiful it is to be one.Available to rent on Prime Video.1. 'But I'm a Cheerleader'But Im a Cheerleader is a brilliant campy comedy from Jamie Babbit about a teen cheerleader (Natasha Lyonne) who is sent to a gay conversion camp by her parents. There she meets a gaggle of gays and ex-gays, including ones played by RuPaul, Melanie Lynskey, and of course, her love interest played by Clea DuVall. Its a comedy classic and one of the first and best truly happy lesbian films. It still stands up today, nearly 25 years after it was released. If youre a queer teen who wants to know that happiness and love are possible for you, watch this movie.Streaming on Tubi.

Zac & Dylan Efron just turned a casual lake day into the thirst trap of the summer
If you heard a collective splash on gay Instagram this week, that was the sound of everyone diving into Zac andDylan Efrons latest IG drops. Zac, 37, kicked things off with a carousel that opened on him shirtless at the helm of a speedboat, aviators on, arms flexing like its still Baywatch press-tour season. Swipe once and hes carving a perfect wake-surf line. Swipe again and you get him strolling the dock in nothing but board shorts and a strategically slung blue towel. Scroll to the end for an adorable sunset video with the bros trading cowboy hats.See on InstagramDylan, 33, answered with a slick montage set to Briscoes Easy Does It. Over the text prompt Describe summer in one word, the Traitors champ cannonballs off the deck, plays around with some handstands, and shares some dock time with his brother and longtime girlfriend Courtney King, whom he playfully tosses into the water. See on InstagramPredictably, comment sections became a parade of parched reactions. (@) Save a horse, ride Zac and Dylan Efron, claimed one user.Zac and Dylan Efron not at the same time bc theyre brothers but idk one can tag in while the other goes to the gym and vice versa idk, said another. (@) The Efrons have history here: Dylans infamous back arch photo sent Insta into meltdown last year, and Zac has done his own share to catch our attention. But this joint flex hits more wholesome, homosocial, and dripping with bro-bod glory. While we wait for another summer roundup, queue the screenshots, crack a seltzer, and remember hydration is a lifestyle, especially when two shirtless Efrons are out making waves.

  • Jonathan Bailey Plays The Clarinet

Jonathan Bailey knows his way around a woodwind
Is there anything Jonathan Bailey cant do? We know he can act, he can sing, he can dance, he can make literally every human swoon, and he can wear the hell out of a pair of slutty little glasses. Turns out he's a wiz on a woodwind too. Today, @ClassicFm released a video on Instagram of the Jurassic World: Rebirth star paying a visit to the famed Abbey Road Studios, where composer Alexandre Desplat was recording the score for the film with a 105-piece-strong orchestra. The actor has been performing music since he was five, and he played in an orchestra when he was 18. If you could have told me at that age that one day there was an opportunity to play with a 105-piece orchestra at Abbey Road with Alexandre Desplat conducting both the John Williams score and also his own incredible original score, I would not quite believe it, said Bailey in the video. Initially, the actor was there just to sit in on the session, but Desplat invited him to play the clarinet solo for his character, as well. Bailey, initially surprised, put his lips to the instrument and proceeded to blow everyone away. That was a highlight, a highlight of my life, Bailey added. Can this man be any more charming? Every time we think hes peaked, he finds a new way to make us absolutely adore him. What he recorded that day is the version that appears in the film. Watch the video below.
