    No punchline, just poly, why this series lets non-monogamy be the heart, not the joke
    The HBO Max series Six Is Not a Crowd kicks off with a classic rom-com setup: a wedding, a meet-cute, a spark. Dami (Nicols Furtado), a lifelong monogamist, meets Caro (Delfina Chaves). They go on a date, and when things seem to be heading down the usual boy-meets-girl path, Caro casually introduces her other boyfriend and girlfriend. Cue the dramatic lightning strike. No, really. "We are polyamorous," she says, just as a bolt splits the sky. It's a moment the show's creators call a deliberate nod to the shock factor, but not for shock's sake.Instead, Six Is Not a Crowd (originally Felices los 6) uses its surprises to spark conversation. Created by Argentine writers Tessie Sills and Javier Rozenwasser, the series leans into familiar rom-com tropesthink Friends or early Apatowbut evolves them into something rarely seen on screen: a romantic comedy where polyamory isn't a punchline, but the emotional center.I've seen shows toy with non-monogamy before, but usually with a wink and a jab. Take Netflix's The Four Seasons, released last month. In one scene, the married characters of Jack (Will Forte) and Kate (Tina Fey) stroll through their old college town, reminiscing, when Kate asks whether the next generation is "just going to give up on marriage?" Jack's response? "People like to say they're poly or not into labels, but even in a throuple someone's gotta clean the air fryer." In the season finale, Kate turns to Jack and declares, "You're my soulmate"a tidy return to monogamous tradition. All is right with the world again. It's a common pattern: polyamory is entertained, briefly, before the narrative restores the status quo.That's why Six Is Not a Crowd is so refreshing. It doesn't just flirt with ethical non-monogamy; it lives there. And for the first time, I saw myself as a bi person in queer relationships reflected on screen with care, complexity, and warmth.According to the creators, that was intentional. "Unfortunately, we're still at a point where we need idealized versions in order to push back against the decades of stigmatizing portrayals of non-monogamous and queer relationships in mainstream media," Sills explains to me from her home in Buenos Aires.As a bi, ethically non-monogamous woman herself, Sills co-wrote Six Is Not a Crowd with her then-partner Rozenwasser. "At that time, we were a non-monogamous couple questioning the traditional relationship escalator. We needed a story that reflected a different way to love, and we set out to write it."Rozenwasser grew up watching romantic comedies. "They filled me with hope about 'finding true love.' But I gradually started to ask myself if the concept of finding 'the one and only' was, in fact, the only way to find love."That question planted the seed for Six is Not a Crowd. By drawing on research into ethical non-monogamy and bringing Sofa Wilhelmi onto the writing team, the creators built a world where love triangles aren't a source of conflictthey're the destination.By turning the classic rom-com formula on its head, the series unlocks something honest. At the end of episode 4, Dami finds himself caught between his partner Caro and his monogamous ex Romina, in the exact kind of scene we'd expect in a more traditional love storyexcept, in this scenario, the tension comes from clashing expectations. Caro drops by while Romina's over. "Are you with someone right now?" Caro asks, then cheerfully adds, "You should've kicked me out."Caro knows Dami's dating other people. There's no problem there. The issue is Damiflailing in old patternsdishonestly introduces Caro to Romina as just "a friend.""We were raised in Dami's worldas were most of the potential viewers of the series," Rozenwasser points out. "And even if we could say the 'world is changing' and that 'everyone is more open nowadays,' we knew that it isn't completely true and that there would be an interesting and funny story in the clash of those worlds."This cultural friction is precisely where the show's emotional core lies. The drama hinges on Dami's struggle to communicate across relational paradigms within a society that is still largely structured around heteronormative monogamy. We see this theme play out in other moments. After a threesome with his partner Caro and her girlfriend, a traditional sitcom might cut to Dami bragging in a locker room, surrounded by bro-ish jokes and high-fives. But Six Is Not a Crowd goes in the opposite direction.On an indoor soccer field, Dami tries to explain to his friends what that night meant to him. He's earnest, even reverent: "There was a lot of foreplay. I was there, but I wasn't there." As the music swells, he recalls with a smile, "I didn't know I had so many sensitive parts of my body."His monogamous friends, predictably, don't get it. "Did you fuck?" a friend asks. "Technicallyno," Dami admits. "But it was better."The scene mines the tension between emotional vulnerability and performative masculinity for laughs. It's not mocking Dami for feeling something; it's asking why we're still so bad at talking about sex. Yet Six Is Not a Crowd isn't here to teach us how to negotiate triad dynamics or draft a relationship agreement. It's not a polyamory how-to guide. Instead, it offers something far more generous: a space to laugh, cry, and reflect on what we actually want from intimate relationships.Through a refreshingly diverse cast of poly characterssome queer, some straightthe show widens the lens on how we connect, how we fail, and how we keep showing up for one another anyway. It allows love to multiply, sidestepping the familiar playbook that resolves love into a single tidy equation between two people. As Rozenwasser explains, the show is asking, "What if the love of your life had other loves of their lives?"As for what comes next? Neither creator would spill details, but hinted that there may be more to explore. "Once you've written characters that defy traditional relationship norms, it's pretty hard to go back to thinking of monogamy-exclusive movies or series," Rozenwasser concedes. In the meantime, their hopes for the series are clear. "I hope people walk away with a little more compassion, curiosity, and willingness to talk," Rozenwasser notes."And I hope viewers see that love and commitment don't have to look just one way," Sills adds. "I wish I'd seen more stories where having feelings outside of a relationship didn't mean you were broken, untrustworthy, or destined to silence part of yourself just to fit into society. I wish I'd understood earlier that desire doesn't have to follow just one path.     Could you be polysexual? If you find that queer, bisexual, or pansexual dont fully explain who you are and who you are attracted to, it might be time to look into this rarely discussed sexual identity. Identity is complicated, with a lot more nuance and gray area than we like to admit, and not only is coming to terms with your LGBTQ+ identity difficult, but deciding what label fits you best can be just as tricky. Then, theres the complicating factor of needing to come out to your family, friends, and potential lovers. Figuring out your sexuality can be overwhelming and even scary, but dont worry, weve got you covered. We spoke with LGBTQ+ sex and relationship experts to find out what polysexuality is, what signs to look for if you think you may be polysexual, and tips and tricks for coming out.What does it mean to be polysexual?The prefix poly, means many and is defined as a sexual orientation where someone is attracted to multiple, but not necessarily all, genders. This means that polysexuals may be attracted to men, women, nonbinary and genderqueer folks, trans people, or any other gender expression.A polysexual person might be attracted to women and nonbinary people, but not to men. Alternatively, they might be attracted to men, genderqueer people, and transgender people, but not to women, says Dr. Gregory Jones, an openly gay psychologist, certified sex therapist, and the CEO and founder of the Capital Center for Psychotherapy and Wellness in Washington, D.C.This can be complicated by how fluid gender identity and sexuality can be, how they can evolve over the course of someones life, and how terms and distinctions change at a societal level over time. It's about having a wide, delicious buffet of attractions instead of an open bar, explains Gia Green, an adult performer and sex writer and Lustery, who is also polysexual herself. For me, it's about acknowledging the people I desire without feeling like I have to check any gender box to justify it. It's fluid, flexible, and leaves room for preferences never experienced before.How is it different from being bisexual or pansexual?While many think bisexuality refers to being attracted to two genders (men and women), the term encompasses nonbinary and trans individuals, too. Bisexuality doesnt mean sticking to the gender binary. Come on, lets bury this myth once and for all, folks. Pansexuality, on the other hand, is the attraction to people regardless of their gender, which means that polysexuality is somewhere in between bisexuality and pansexuality because it refers to individuals who are attracted to many, but not all, genders.Pansexuality is broader in scope than polysexuality, as it includes every gender identity without limitation, explains Angela Vossen, a relationship coach and founder of Sextasy, who self-identifies as polysexual and polyamorous. This distinction isn't necessarily clear or significant for many people.So you may be attracted to men and gender fluid people, but not women, or they might just vibe with masculine-presenting folks regardless of how their bodies look like, Green says. We all have our patterns of desire, and polysexuality names that with clarity and pride.6 signs you may be polysexualYes, some people have a clear understanding of their sexuality from a young age, while other people discover it later in life, but it can also be an ever-evolving process of reevaluating how you feel and the type of person you are attracted to. So if you dont have it all figured out yet, dont worry, you arent alone.Understanding your sexuality can be tricky, but our experts have some signs to look out for if you think you might be polysexual.1. Youre attracted to more than one gender, but there are also ones that dont spark any sexual interest in you.2. When you are fantasizing about your future or having sex fantasies, you get excited by switching out the gender identity of your potential romantic/sexual partners.3. You feel comfortable embracing the idea of liking multiple gender expressions without feeling the need to have your attractions be universal.4. Youve labeled yourself as bisexual or pansexual in the past, but neither label accurately describes you because bisexuality feels too limiting, and pansexuality feels too broad.5. You resonate with stories about polysexuality or depictions of it on social media or in pop culture.6. When you read about the term polysexual, it felt right and seemed to fit.It can be very important for some people to feel a sense of connection and relief when identifying themselves sexually. If you feel that the term polysexual connects to you, you may be polysexual, Dr. Jones assures.Tips for coming outOk, so youve decided the polysexual label fits you and are ready to start telling your friends and family. But what is the best way to come out to people?First, coming out can be difficult, and you should do it on your own terms and at your own pace. But once youre ready, think about picking a private, calm, and safe environment to talk to people you trust, like close friends and supportive family members. The people you tell might be unaware of what polysexual means, so be prepared to explain it in simple terms, and prepare yourself for the fact that they may have follow-up questions. You can also set firm boundaries if youre not ready to have a deep discussion with anyone yet, and end conversations if they go in a negative direction. Start with one or two trusted people to build confidence. Use resources like letters, texts, or casual conversations if a face-to-face talk feels overwhelming, recommends Vossen. If safety is a concern, consider delaying coming out to certain people until youre in a more secure situation (e.g., financially independent or with a support network).Since polysexuality is a lesser-known sexual orientation, not everyone will immediately understand, and some people may need time to process. Let them, but prioritize your own well-being and think about connecting with polysexual or LGBTQ+ groups either online or in-person, who you can share you experience with and gain support.Finding a sense of community is also incredibly important in coming out, regardless of your sexual identity, Dr. Jones advises. Community is powerful in lifting you up, as well as a safe place for healing and growth. Please remember there is no right or wrong way to do this, and that identity can be fluid over time. Today, you may identify as polysexual, but over time, that may evolve into a different orientation, and that is okay!Youre also under no obligation to come out at all, and if you choose to, you can also make the whole thing a lot more casual, Green says.Come out the way you get off in your own damn style, she suggests. For me, that means skipping the performative coming-out moment and focusing on self-alignment. Maybe you just drop it in casually: Oh yeah, I'm polysexual, I'm into multiple genders, not all of them. Or maybe you want a more intimate moment with someone you trust. Either way, remember: you're not asking for permission. And, a queer icon.James Gunn's new Superman movie is just around the corner, and it's already igniting debate across the internet about superheroes and what they represent.Starring David Corenswet as the titular Man of Steel, Superman tells the story of an alien from the planet Krypton who landed on Earth as a baby and now possesses incredible powers. It seems like a simple premise, yet the film is making headlines after writer/director Gunn pointed out something obvious: Superman is an immigrant."I mean, Superman is the story of America," he said. "An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost."Fox News immediately dubbed Superman "Superwoke." Commentator Kellyanne Conway said, "We don't go to the movie theater to be lectured to and to have someone throw their ideology onto us.""You know what it says on his cape? MS13," Jesse Watters added, referencing alleged gang tattoos a man named Kilmar Abrego Garcia had on his knuckles that were used as evidence he should be deported.Dean Cain, a conservative actor who played Superman on the TV show Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, has now added his two cents."Changing beloved characters I dont think is a great idea. I think if you wanna create a new character, go ahead and do that, but for me, Superman has always stood for truth, justice, and the American way," he said to TMZ. "And the American way is immigrant-friendly tremendously immigrant-friendly, but there are rules."Cain said, "It was a mistake by James Gunn to say it's an immigrant thing," and that he's rooting for the film's success, "but I don't like that last political comment."Conservatives are angry enough hearing the fact that Superman was not born in the U.S.A., so what will they think when they realize that the character is also a gay allegory?Here are four ways Superman is, and has always been, a queer allegory.Secret Identity and Double LifeGay people know intimately what it's like to keep a secret from everyone around you. Many also often understand what it's like to feel you have to live a double life.The concept of a secret identity is a clear allegory for being in the closet and for the idea of "passing." Many queer people feel they have to "pass" as straight or cis while in public to protect their true identity and protect their safety."It is for many reasons we often hold onto our secret identities," trans writer Riley Chattin wrote in The Advocate. "Whether our secrets are self-imposed, or we are told that we should never disclose it, we learn that it must remain hidden behind the exterior that society accepts. Only in the dark of night, like Batman, do we go out with completely different clothes. Maybe even hide our faces in a webbed Spider-Man-like mask so those closest to us cannot recognize us."Being Different / an OutsiderWhen Gunn talks about Superman being an immigrant, he's talking about him being an outsider. Superman is not like most people. He's not like most men. He knows he is different and has to navigate the world and all his relationships, knowing most people will not be able to relate to significant parts of his life. These same things can often be said for queer people.Queer people are often found in community with each other precisely because they are different. Most of the population is not queer and many people even find understanding queerness to be difficult. If queer people are outsiders, at least superheroes are too."More than any Superman film before, Man of Steel presents Kent as an outsider, struggling to find his place in a society where he does not see himself reflected," Jase Peeples wrote about the 2013 film. "It's a predicament not unfamiliar to many in the LGBT community -- especially those who grew up in an era before gay characters were commonplace in media, when others like us could be discovered faster than a speeding bullet through the internet."HypermasculinitySuperman's name declares him as the ultimate man. Superman is handsome, strong, and has a body like the men you'd find in a Tom of Finland drawing. While straight men admire Superman's masculinity, gay men find it both aspirational and hot.The CostumeSpandex, a bright cape, and the underwear on the outside? Did I describe Superman's costume or an outfit you'd see at any Pride festival?Of course, gay people are often drawn to the fashion sense of superheroes, and Superman's costume is one of the all-time greats!No matter how much conservatives complain, Superman's story is an immigrant story, and it is a queer story. Queer people have always seen themselves in superheroes, and will continue to do so. If conservatives want heroes that don't represent the queer community, they need to look elsewhere.James Gunn's Superman will be released in theaters on July 11.

However, in her statement, the singer whose real name is Hayden Silas Anhednia and her fans have expressed that they think she's the target of a transphobic hate campaign.Cains Spotify page was hacked, and the person who hacked it wrote that Cain, who is a trans woman, was a weird boy, Stereogum reported.An X account called @herweirdsilas uploaded screenshots of Cains unsavory posts that were originally posted to a subreddit dedicated to the singer. The original post on Reddit has since been deleted. The screengrabs include her responses to questions on a Q&A platform called Curious Cat, where she admitted to using the N-word and wrote, build that wall. There was also a screenshot of her wearing a shirt that read, Legalize Incest along with posts mocking people who use they/them pronouns, making fat jokes, and jokes about rape. Im not affiliated with the hacking of her Spotify, and despite the obvious transphobic rhetoric that the hackers have, this shouldnt change your opinion about the recent allegations, reads a post by the X account that reupped Cain's old posts. They are just some bad apples and clearly not trying to hold her accountable.Since facing criticism, transphobic social media users have taken the opportunity to sling transphobic comments at Cain and to misgender her. As discourse online ballooned, some have advocated for nuance. 'Ethel Cain did something wrong and we can hold her accountable for that while also recognizing the transmisogynistic smear campaign she's experiencing,' is apparently too nuanced of a take for Twitter, one person wrote. (@) Taking accountability for her old posts, Cain wrote that she was 19 at the time and knew what she was saying. She wrote that she spent her later high school years as a progressive, as a way to reject the indoctrination of my environment and rebel against the prejudice, hatred, and ignorance of the culture I grew up in, she wrote. I flip-flopped again, rejecting all notions of my former 'cringe SJW [social justice warrior]' behavior and intended to be as inflammatory and controversial as possible. I would have said (and usually did say) anything, about anyone, to gain attention and ultimately just make my friends laugh."Cain went on to say that the release of these unearthed posts was the result of a vindictive attack. All of these things resurfacing are not the actions of a well-meaning individual concerned by something they discovered easily and casually on the internet, the 27-year-old wrote. These are screenshots obtained through extensive digging, hacking, and cooperative effort amongst a group of individuals who do not care who else is hurt by witnessing this media as long as I am ultimately hurt the worst in the end.The information that was gathered about her has been hoarded over the past couple of years Cain said, adding that shes been tipped off in various ways. This massive smear campaign has been a long time in the making, waiting for the right moment to be unleashed, and now it finally has, she continued. The statement concluded: I will not allow this smear campaign to silence me in the same way I have not allowed any of their previous attempts to silence me. Again, in this day and age, just as I must be diligent with my voice and my actions, you share the same responsibility.While Cain's fans acknowledged and are upset with her problematic old posts, people on social media have recognized the coordinated effort to deplatform her. While having these discussions, please do not invalidate the feelings of people who were hurt by her past behavior, one fan page wrote on their Instagram story. She is the victim of a vile, egregious, transphobic hate campaign, she is holding herself accountable for past behaviors. Two things can exist at once.     It all comes down to this!Editor's note: This article contains spoilers for episode 11, titled "Tournament of All Stars Talent Invitational," of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 10.After fiercely competing on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 10 for many weeks, seven queens in addition to one wildcard queen who had been eliminated from the Tournament of All Stars but will now return to lip sync for the crown have now qualified to the grand finale and have a shot at earning a spot in the Drag Race Hall of Fame.A sickening group of 18 queens entered one of three brackets in the Tournament of All Stars and earned enough points to move forward in the competition. Nine competitors made it to the semi-finals, where they competed in the Snatch Game (episode 10) and in the Talent Invitational challenge (episode 11). One queen was eliminated in each of those episodes, but instead of moving forward with seven finalists, Mama Ru and the judges are bringing back one eliminated queen to be the eighth finalist in the lip sync smackdown for the crown.Are you ready, boots?Who won the Talent Invitational challenge on All Stars 10?Pretty hurts, but someone has to do it, and Bosco had the judges eating out of her hand during this entire number for the Talent Invitational challenge of All Stars 10.This was, overall, a very good Variety Show challenge in the Drag Race queendom. Nonetheless, Bosco was absolutely that much better in both the concept and the execution of her performance as a gorgeous diva and doll who is just too pretty to bother having any talent while displaying many actual talents during her number. Oh, and the other queens watching Bosco from the audience were living for it, too. (Yes, we clocked you, Daya Betty!)RuPaul established that Bosco, Jorgeous, and Ginger Minj were the top 3 best performers of the night, but declared that Bosco was the rightful winner of this final maxi challenge in the Tournament of All Stars. Even though they didn't win the challenge, Jorgeous and Ginger happily re-grouped with the other safe girls of the week after all, being "safe" in this episode meant that a queen had officially qualified for the grand finale, which is next Friday, July 18.The bottom 2 queens from this Talent Invitational was a dramatic pairing: Lydia B Kollins and Mistress Isabelle Brooks. Drag daughter and drag mother! "That's the gag of the season," BeBe Zahara Benet would've said if she was present. And she would've been right.Which queen was eliminated on All Stars 10 episode 11?As the bottom 2 queens of the week, Lydia B Kollins and Mistress Isabelle Brooks had to lip sync for their lives to qualify for a spot at the grand finale of All Stars 10 And if all of the theatrics and dramatics weren't already gay enough, the song for this final lip sync for your life in the Tournament of All Stars was the Brat anthem "Guess" by Charli XCX featuring Billie Eilish. Gawd, being gay is so great.Lydia shook her groove thing. MIB woke it up. Yet, in a Shakes-queer-ean twist, a daughter slayed her mother after all. Ru told Lydia to shantay and move forward to the grand finale, while Mistress was asked to sashay away.Which queens were picked by the judges for the wildcard twist on All Stars 10?Out100 honoree Angeria Paris VanMicheals, who won All Stars 9 and entered the Drag Race Hall of Fame in 2024, joined this final part of the episode and helped the judges reveal which queens had been chosen for the wildcard twist.Three mainstay judges were able to pick a queen that they'd want to enter the wildcard twist. The choices went as follows:Ross Mathews chose Mistress Isabelle Brooks.Ts Madison chose Kerri Colby.Michelle Visage also chose Kerri Colby.Next up, Pit Crew stud Bruno Alcantara entered the scene to participate in the draw. The host of Happy Endings With Bruno entered those three balls two for Kerri, one for Mistress and started to spin the wheel. After enough spinning, Bruno reached in, grabbed one of the three balls, and showed it to Angeria and the judges.However, the name on that chosen ball the eighth queen who will get to lip sync for the crown along with the seven other finalists was not revealed to the camera.     This gay grandpa was fined $16k for protesting trans youth suicides, and he would 'do it again'
    It was in the late 1970s when a teenage James Lantz lost a close friend to suicide something he believes to this day happened "because he was gay and was not accepted."The filmmaker describes his upbringing in a small Virginia town as conservative and Christian, recalling the kind of place where "nobody was out." Now 64, Lantz feels as if he's been transported back to his youth as he grapples with the losses of five transgender and nonbinary young people, all of whom died by suicide in the same Pennsylvania county within 18 months. It was their stories that would reignite Lantz's life mission, and ultimately land him in jail with a fine of over $16,000. "Having grown up a closeted gay teen in Virginia ... I knew how that felt," Lantz tells our sister brand, The Advocate. "I know that I got extremely depressed sometimes. I know that I have been suicidal at times. I know what these kids are experiencing. All they need is just a little bit of support. They need an adult in their life, or just an adult anywhere, to listen and say I see you, I support you, and you are loved."Related: Pennsylvania fines gay grandpa with stage 4 cancer $16k for protesting trans youth suicideLantz pleaded guilty on Tuesday to criminal mischief and misdemeanor vandalism as a result of his demonstration in April of last year, during which he interrupted a Senate session by yelling at state Sen. Ryan Aument. The Republican had sponsored several anti-LGBTQ+ bills, including the state's "Don't Say Gay" law, a trans sports ban, and a ban on LGBTQ+ books that he referred to as "pornographic."Around 39 percent of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, according to a 2024 national survey from The Trevor Project, including 46 percent of trans and nonbinary youth. Those who reported living in accepting communities attempted suicide at less than half the rate of those who reported living in unaccepting communities. Despite this, the Trump Administration recently ended the 988 suicide hotline's specialized services for LGBTQ+ youth.Upon hearing about the five deaths, which took place in Aument's Lancaster County between 2022 and 2024, Lantz said that he requested to meet with the senator on over six occasions, but that he never received a response. Neither did the family of one of the trans youth, who are Aument's neighbors. Lantz says that he was "so incensed" by Aument's "ghosting" that he wanted to take action, but he realized "the only way that I can be heard here was to go down and try to confront him directly." So, he looked up when the state Senate would be in session, and formulated a plan.On April 29, 2024, Lantz made it through security with a small hand sanitizer bottle he had filled with superglue. Officers found flyers he intended to distribute in one of his pockets and confiscated them, but missed the others he was keeping in a different pocket. He says his plan wasn't intended to cause damage, but rather to protect himself."I'm a grandfather with stage 4 cancer," Lantz says. "If a policeman not even just tackles me, but shoves me down onto the ground, I'm going to break a lot of bones, because the cancer is gravitated to my bones. The reason I carried the glue was I thought that there would be less of a chance for them tackling me. I'm not going anywhere if my hand is glued to the railing."Once he was on the fourth-floor visitors gallery, Lantz "put a whole bunch of super glue on my hand and plopped it on the railing and waited about 30 to 60 seconds for it to take." He saw Aument on the Senate floor below, and "belted out what I had to say to him" as he scattered his flyers.Lantz commanded the floor, speaking about the five youth who died by suicide for several minutes, issuing three demands for Aument: to reach out to the parents and express condolences, to reconsider the legislation that he introduces, and to resign. Aument resigned in December to become State Director for U.S. Senator Dave McCormick without commenting on the trans youth. He was replaced in a special election by Democrat James Andrew Malone, despite the district leaning Republican."I think I scared the shit out of Senator Aument," he says. "He whipped around and cringed as though the voice of God was yelling at him."Aument scurried under the balcony to avoid looking at Lantz, Lantz says, and law enforcement quickly acted to remove him, both of which Lantz expected. What he says surprised him was the support he received from those around him, even the people tasked with ending his demonstration. The filmmaker recalls the officers who removed him being "pretty chill," and the nurse who worked to unstick his hand whispering to him, "Those poor kids."Even when he arrived at the police station, Lantz says the processing officer who greeted him told him, "Sir, I really respect you for what you did. We should be asking our politicians to be answerable to their actions more often."Lantz spent 12 hours in a jail cell, and was charged with two felony counts of institutional vandalism and criminal mischief, as well as a misdemeanor offense for obstructing an official proceeding. The felony vandalism charge was lowered to a misdemeanor as part of his eventual plea deal. Lantz has been fined $16,575 for the damages the official invoice obtained by Penn Live shows $11,250 for carpet replacement, $3,775 to remove the glue, and $1,550 to repair the wood trim. Alisa Davidson, a prosecutor with the Dauphin County District Attorneys Office, told the outlet that the fines are high because the damaged objects are historic.Lantz isn't quite sure where the carpet damage charges come from, calling it an "insane amount of money." He now must set up a payment plan with the state, which is pushing for him to pay back the fines within just a year. "I've been a filmmaker for all my professional life and an adjunct college professor for some of that. I don't have that money at all," he says."What this proves is the sad fact that while Pennsylvania did not ignore the glue that I accidentally spilled on the chair, they did ignore the suicides of five trans and nonbinary youth," Lantz continues. "Which logically would say that in the state of Pennsylvania, a chair is worth more than a trans youth."Lantz, known online as "Angry Gay Grandpa," has not yet launched a public fundraiser to cover the cost of the damages, but has been raising money through GoFundMe since February for a commercial seeking to uplift LGBTQ+ youth. Not Losing You is a public service announcement that aims to bridge the gap between queer children and their conservative or Christian families who may not understand them."I want to be in the living room and some of these rural community homes where there is a, a gay or trans youth," Lantz explains. "I want [their parents] to realize 'I don't have to say that I'm gonna vote for a Democrat and I don't have to say that I understand what you're going through. But I can say no matter what, I don't want to lose you.'"In what he calls the "final chapter" of his life, Lantz is "absolutely dedicated to getting out as much media as I can to support trans and LGBTQ youth, because I don't want any more kids dying by suicide." The deaths in Lancaster County are especially tragic, the filmmaker says, as he deeply believes "these could have been preventable.""These five trans and nonbinary youth suicides, my cancer, and my absolute dedication to not having kids die by suicide was a combination that made me do things I would never have done in a previous life, or before the last five years with my cancer," Lantz says. "But this just pushed me over the edge, and I was proud to do it.     Words have meaning. That's a phrase conservatives love to throw around when talking about sex and gender. So why, when it comes to stealing gay terms, do conservatives toss the real meaning out the window?One of the many, many disturbing trends among those on the right is the dubbing of current President Donald Trump as Daddy. Many of his fans shout from the rooftops how much they love "Daddy Trump" and how they trust him with their lives. Do they know that for most people who use the slang term, Daddy has sexual, and often gay, meanings? Do they care?Conservative pundit Tucker Carlson spoke at a Trump rally ahead of the election last year, where he said that Trump winning the presidential election would be like that old childhood threat when "dad gets home," meaning punishment would be doled out and order restored. He compared America to a "hormone-addled 15-year-old daughter" who slams her bedroom door."When Dad gets home, you know what he says? Youve been a bad girl, youve been a bad little girl, and youre getting a vigorous spanking right now, Carlson said to thunderous applause. And no, its not going to hurt me more than it hurts you. No, its not. Im not going to lie. This is going to hurt you a lot more than it hurts me. And you earned this. Youre getting a vigorous spanking because youve been a bad girl."Not satisfied with how far he had gone, the crowd began chanting, "Daddy's home!""Dad" wasn't enough; they needed the raw sexual energy of "Daddy."The trend took off again at the end of June when NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte called Trump "Daddy" during a NATO meeting.Trump had compared Israel and Iran to "two kids in a schoolyard" who are fighting "like hell.""Daddy has to sometimes use strong language to get them to stop," Rutte said.Rutte later told Reuters that he was referring to the United States as "Daddy," rather than Trump."In Europe, I hear sometimes countries saying, 'Hey, Mark, will the U.S. stay with us?' And I said that sounds a little bit like a small child asking his daddy, 'Hey, are you still staying with the family?'" Rutte said.Trump, however, embraced it, saying, "He did it very affectionately, 'Daddy, you're my daddy,'" per Yahoo News.Now, the Trump White House is running with the title, releasing a video posted to social media that says, "Daddy's Home." The video features images of Trump at the summit and includes Usher's song "Hey Daddy (Daddy's Home)".Trump is even selling shirts for his fans to wear, emblazoned with his infamous mugshot and the word "DADDY." Now, voters everywhere can let the whole world know Trump is their Daddy and they are his boys.When conservatives are calling Trump "Daddy," what do they think they are saying?As gay Michigan state senator Jeremy Moss told republican lawmaker Jonathan Lindsay when he suggested that more people should call the president "Daddy Trump," "You don't want to know what daddy means in my community."Still, we're going to tell you.The Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang lists the oldest recorded use of "Daddy" as slang in 1681 when prostitutes used it to refer to their pimp.Maybe conservatives aren't using it so wrong after allIn more modern usage, the term took off in popularity in the 1970s in the gay leather subculture, where Leather Daddies were typically dominant, masculine figures in the BDSM community.It's also a popular term in the straight BDSM and kink community. The term may not be as gay there, but it's still about sexual domination and a paternalistic role.Daddies are everything men want to be as they get older. If you take all the things that are attractive about aging, being established, emotional maturity, and life experience, and you get a Daddy.Trump is old, and he is a man, we'll give him that. And technically, he is a father. But the Daddy stops there.According to countryqueer.com, one of the key characteristics of a Leather Daddy is hypermasculinity. "Emphasis on rugged, mature masculinity beards, muscles, body hair, and a strong, confident posture."Daddies are well-dressed, with impeccably tailored suits, well-maintained haircuts, and sharp grooming.They don't wear ill-fitting suits, layers of fake tan, and ever-moving comb-overs. They are charming and likable. These arent bad dads. A daddy is the best dad you can imagine. He's someone you want to spend time with and someone you want to emulate."Daddies are eroticized versions of the father figure, authoritative and in control," The San Francisco Standard writes."Sexually, a daddy is usually the top. If the relationship is rooted in BDSM, as many are, hes also the dom, or even a master."Richard Prott, a professor of sexual identity development, is quoted in The Standard, saying, "In the context where I run, that flair tends to be one of protector, guide, mentor."A Daddy is strong and steadfast. He knows what hes doing, hes capable and good at what he does. He provides stability and protection from all the chaos of the world; he doesn't cause it.He is an alpha and a leader. He's not the kind of man who kowtows to any foreign leader who might have something to offer him. He's not the kind of weak-willed man who turns his country into an international pariah so that he can appease the one world leader who puffs him up.Daddies are providers and authority figures and have their community's best interests at heart. They take care of the people who call them Daddy, making their lives better. They make them feel safe and cared for.They don't cut health insurance and nutrition programs. They don't break Teen Pregnancy Prevention Programs that have been working for years. They don't end federal HIV prevention programs.They don't rush into a military airstrike against Iran that could further destabilize the region and cause Americans across the country to fear that a world war is starting.A Daddy fights his own battles. He doesn't rely on curable "heel spurs" to avoid serving in the military.A Daddy respects women and people who are different from him, and earns respect in return. They aren't found liable for sexual abuse and ordered to pay millions of dollars by a judge.You know who is a Daddy? Wilson Cruz. Not only is he handsome, talented, well-spoken, and well-dressed, but he's a true leader for his community. In addition to being a groundbreaking queer Latino actor, his work with GLAAD and GLSEN saves lives and gives queer youth hope for a better future.Anderson Cooper is a Daddy. The CNN anchor is a proud father and silver-haired fox, but he also knows when to stand up for what is right. He's not afraid to speak truth to power, and he doesn't compromise his morals to make himself more popular. He also doesn't resort to homophobic insults when talking about people he disagrees with.Despite having almost no attributes usually found in a "Daddy," conservatives still insist on using the term for Trump. They still feel drawn to it and the sexual connotations that come with it.If youre calling Trump "Daddy," you may as well start saying you're bottoming for him, too.

"Everyone deserves to go to work and do their job without their boss trying to have sex with them, Dixon tells the Reporter.In his lawsuit, he alleges that the media mogul made several unwanted advances toward him, "including one in which the producer pinned him against a wall and groped him and another in which Perry snuck into his bed," according to the Reporter. On the HBO series, Dina is more than just a love interest for Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) she's a character that stands on her own, and also happens to be a loyal partner to Ellie at a time when she needs it the most.On that note, it's worth noting that Merced identifies as queer in real life not just her character on The Last of Us. "I've been queer my whole life, so I never really thought about it," Merced told The New York Times in April. "But I remember playing the game and seeing the scene in the dance and thinking, 'That's so cool.'"The Last of Us is streaming on HBO Max.David Corenswet 'The Politician'David Corenswet starred in the first season of Ryan Murphy's The Politician as River Barkley a wealthy, popular, and troubled character who had a love affair with his school mate, Payton Hobart (played Ben Platt).In front of everyone else, River had a longtime girlfriend and considered Payton as a rival for his political aspirations. Between just the two of them, however, River and Payton actually had a romantic connection and a deeper relationship than what other could see.River had a tragic death in season 1 and only appeared as a recurring character in season 2. But, given how queer-inclusive The Politician was, Corenswet stood out to gay audiences for playing that character. Now, that actor is none other than Clark Kent himself.The Politician is streaming on Netflix.Rachel Brosnahan 'House of Cards'While viewers may recognize Rachel Brosnahan for her performance as the titular character on Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the actress who plays Lois Lane in this Superman movie has a long list of acting credits Some of which are queer!For instance, Brosnahan starred as the iconic Rachel Posner on House of Cards: A sex worker who used Doug Stamper (played by Michael Kelly) for money but identified as a queer woman. Overall, Brosnahan appeared in the first three seasons of the Netflix series.House of Cards is streaming on Netflix.Rachel Brosnahan 'Manhattan'As Abby Isaacs on WGN America's Manhattan, Brosnahan delivered another great performance of a queer character. Set in the 1940s, there was certainly a bigger focus on that character for just being the wife of Dr. Charlie Isaacs (played by Ashley Zukerman).And yet, viewers fell in love with Abby as a result of Brosnahan's nuanced and lived-in performance.Manhattan is streaming on Prime Video.Nicholas Hoult 'Skins'Now that's what we call a "twink death."From starring on the original, British version of Skins as a bisexual character named Tony Stonem to now embodying one of the most iconic super-villains of all time Lex Luthor in Superman, Nicholas Hoult continues to understand the assignment, no matter what project he's attached to.Skins is streaming on Hulu.

    A variety of talents!The Variety Show sometimes referred to as a Talent Show has turned into a recurring challenge in the RuPaul's Drag Race franchise over the years.Since its introduction on All Stars 2 and continuity in subsequent All Stars seasons, the Variety/Talent Shows of Drag Race have also been brought to flagship seasons of the U.S. series challenging even new queens to introduce themselves to the judges and the fans in the hopes of making a good first impression.With so many dazzling, hilarious, and unexpected performances over the years, it's easy to remember and celebrate this group of talented queens serving stage presence and star quality on the main stage.Below, check out the list of queens who won the Variety Show or Talent Show challenge of their respective seasons on RuPaul's Drag Race and All Stars.Roxxxy Andrews 'All Stars 2'The first-ever Variety Show on RuPaul's Drag Race happened on All Stars 2, and Roxxxy Andrews was one of two winners for this challenge. By winning the Variety show challenge at the grand premiere, Aja not only proved that she was a force to be reckoned with, but she also showed how much she had evolved despite the short time between season 9 and All Stars 3.BenDeLaCreme 'All Stars 3'The cast of All Stars 3 really underestimated BenDeLaCreme's talents going into this season, but it didn't take long for this queen to show them what she's got. Ben performed a hilarious burlesque number in this All Stars Variety Show and then also went on to win the lip sync against Aja.Mo Heart 'All Stars 4'Formerly known as Monique Heart (now Mo Heart), this season 10 queen was one of two winners in the "All Star Super Queen Variety Show" from All Stars 4. She performed an on-brand song with her "brown cow stunning" catchphrase, and it was a pure delight to watch her return to our TVs.Trinity The Tuck 'All Stars 4'Trinity The Tuck is the other winner from All Stars 4's "All Star Super Queen Variety Show." The queen performed a cheeky original song about teaching people how to tuck and ended the number by showing off her fierce tuck to the panel of judges. Mama Ru was LIVING!India Ferrah 'All Stars 5'Despite the shift in the format from top 2 lipstick to Ru-mocracy group voting, All Stars 5 maintained the Variety Show as the challenge featured in the grand premiere. This time, India Ferrah won with an original song referencing the "drag is not a contact sport" quote that made her known in the Drag Race fandom.Yara Sofia 'All Stars 6' (@) Yara Sofia proved the star power of an OG Drag Race queen by winning the "All Star Variety Extravaganza" at the grand premiere of All Stars 6. Through her kooky sense of humor and off-the-wall look, Yara had Mama Ru laughing for a long time, which culminated in her winning that first challenge.Kornbread 'The Snack' Jet 'Drag Race' Season 14The Variety Show challenge was established as a tradition over several All Stars seasons, and it was brought to regular cycles of Drag Race in the U.S. starting with season 14.     Dating shows for queer people? We will be watching!Historically, LGBTQ+ dating shows have been iconic, chaotic, hilarious, and dramatic. Unfortunately, there haven't been that many in comparison to the flood of dating shows for straight people.From chaotic bisexual dating shows in the 2000s to attempts of making queer versions of The Bachelor to free-for-all shows where LGBTQ+ cast members are all free to explore connections with one another, fans have been keeping up with several creative approaches trying to reformat this genre of reality TV for queer people. While some of these shows were clearly not taken as seriously as their straight counterparts, queer people have always looked for representation wherever we can find it and that's still true to this day.Queer fans of reality TV are still waiting for a massively successful LGBTQ+ dating show to reach mainstream audiences and air for many years to come. But before they talk, flirt, or do anything else, two contestants must share a kiss And everything else must wait.Where to watch: Hulu.'I Kissed a Girl'Dannii Minogue returned as Cupid in the sapphic spinoff of BBC Three's I Kissed a Boy, which is also streaming on Hulu for U.S. viewers.I Kissed a Girl, a lesbian dating show spinoff that is actually not referencing the Katy Perry song, follows a group of 10 girls looking for love amongst themselves and finding out what a kiss can reveal about one another.Where to watch: Hulu.'Who Likes My Follower?'Who Likes My Follower? is a Netflix dating series produced in Spain that featured LGBTQ+ contestants and coaches in its first season. In turn, single contestants come into the dating show ready to fall for someone who's all about that farm life. In the second season of the show, Farmer Kirkland stood out to viewers as he had an entire group of single guys vying for his heart.Where to watch: CTV (in Canada).'For the Love of DILFs'Hosted by Stormy Daniels, For the Love of DILFs is a show where gay men are separated into two groups "daddies" and "himbos" as they all compete for to form connections and find love.Where to watch: OUTtv.'The Ultimatum: Queer Love'Netflix's original The Ultimatum series created a new, all-queer dating show The Ultimatum: Queer Love, which has aired for two seasons both hosted by JoAnna Garcia Swisher so far.Considering how messy drama, the entertaining contestants, and interesting storylines that this show has featured in the past, reality TV fans will keep coming back for more.Where to watch: Netflix.'Vanjie: 24 Hours of Love'Vanessa Vanjie Mateo broke the internet with her legendary "Miss Vanjie" exit from RuPaul's Drag Race season 10. She then returned to compete in season 11 and placed fifth overall.In 2022, Vanjie got to lead her very own dating show, Vanjie: 24 Hours of Love, and actually dated the contestant who won the season, Jack Janowicz, for months. Alas, the couple eventually went their separate ways. Fans have speculated that the 24 Hours of Love format could be used for other Drag Race stars. Moreover, Vanjie's journey to the All Stars 9 finale has absolutely left fans wanting to see more of Miss Vanjie on TV. Season 2, perhaps? One reality TV icon who has always understood the assignment was Too Hot to Handle legend Francesca Farago, who ended up getting matched with Abbey Humphreys (Twentysomethings: Austin).And they just went for it! Giving fans a glorious moment of queerness on a mainstream dating show on Netflix.Where to watch: Netflix.'Are You the One?'Season 8For the first time in reality TV history, season 8 of MTV's Are You the One? featured an all-LGBTQ+ cast of contestants.Specifically, all contestants on Are You The One? season 8 identified as pansexual, and the season which aired in 2019 was also praised for featuring trans cast members on a dating show. That person goes through a series of dates that take place on different nights (but are all edited together for our viewing pleasure). The end result of each episode is always interesting, besides the fact that it's quite revealing in terms of how people really act like on a date.Where to watch: Netflix.'Married At First Sight UK'Over the years, the U.K. version of Married At First Sight has featured several notable LGBTQ+ contestants and couples. From Zoe and Jenna, to Matt and Dan, to the casting of Ella Morgan a trans woman in the series, Married At First Sight UK is really pushing for more inclusivity in the dating shows genre.Where to watch: Channel 4 in the U.K.; Unavailable for streaming in the U.S.'Ex on the Beach'For a few years now, MTV's Ex on the Beach has been featuring LGBTQ+ contestants on every single season. In its first season, 12 Dates of Christmas featured three leads, one of whom (Garrett Marcantel) was a gay man. Viewers were then introduced to Garrett's various love interests over the course of the season.Queer representation was turned up even higher in the second season. Among the three leads, one was a gay man (Markelle Smith) and another was a lesbian woman (Amanda Grace Jenkins). As a result, two third of the overall cast for this dating show consisted of queer love interests vying for either the gay lead or the lesbian lead.Unfortunately, 12 Dates of Christmas was reportedly one of 87 shows that were canceled and removed from the HBO Max catalog, as reported by IndieWire. In subsequent years, Tila Tequila became a much more polarizing figure and also denied ever being attracted to women in any way, claiming that she only did and said such things for A Shot at Love to work as a dating show.Where to watch: The Roku Channel.'Love at First Lie'MTV's Love At First Lie featured quite a few LGBTQ+ couples. For instance, the cast included queer couples like Stephanie and Arabella; Jake and Alfie; Tom and Steven; Fannie and Clove; and Jack and Joe.Generally speaking, the premise of this show was a challenge for the couples to spot which pair of lovers among them was actually fake (not a real couple at all), all while actually going through the motions of being in a dating competition.Where to watch: Paramount+.'Next'The campy and hilarious Next was an episodic speed-dating show that involved as many as five people at a time.     Media mogul Tyler Perry is at the center of controversy after he was accused of sexual assault by one of the actors on his show The Oval. The actor, Derek Dixon, filed a $260 million lawsuit against Perry in Los Angeles Superior Court last month, and the more Dixon speaks out, the larger the story becomes. He recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about why he felt it was time to do so.But Perry isn't the only one facing claims of sexual assault. The senior vice president of scripted programming at Tyler Perry Studios, Mark E. Swinton, was accused of grooming and rape by actor Braxton Wells in a series of videos uploaded to Instagram. In his videos, he says that Perry knew about the assault and is complicit in helping cover it up.Dixon and Wells are not the first to accuse Perry of inappropriate behavior. In 2023, an actor named Christian Keyes, who worked on multiple projects for Perry, including Diary of a Mad Black Woman, alleged that he was the victim of sexual harassment at the hands of a "Black Hollywood billionaire" in an Instagram Live. On June 13, the actor, who has appeared in more than 80 episodes of Perry's BET show The Oval, sued the influential billionaire for sexual harassment, sexual assault, and coercion. "Everyone deserves to go to work and do their job without their boss trying to have sex with them, Dixon tells the Reporter.In his lawsuit, he alleges that the media mogul made several unwanted advances toward him, "including one in which the producer pinned him against a wall and groped him and another in which Perry snuck into his bed," according to the Reporter.     I drove across the country in my car, not knowing a thing or two about what I was getting myself into. No map for how it would all work out; no certainty, no safety net. Just me, my voice, and a purpose I couldn't ignore. That's the power of faith. The kind that whispers like your story is bigger than this moment. Bigger than fear. Bigger than me.When I left New York City, it wasn't just about geography. I needed to reset my life. I needed the space to go after my dreams in a new light, whatever that meant. I didn't have the answers but something inside me was calling for more. And I finally dared to follow it.Everyone around me seemed to have an idea of what I should be. I constantly modified my image as a performer. I wasn't always sure who I truly was under all of that. I wore the mask well, but something deeper inside knew I was meant for more.Music was the only place I felt like myself. Not someone else's lyrics or notes. My voice. My stories. My fire.When I arrived in Los Angeles, I had no connections. No job or friends. Just me, a car, and a dream. That distance from my loved ones was real.     Jim Obergefell fears same-sex marriage 'will be erased'
    On June 26, 2015, Jim Obergefell sat in the U.S. Supreme Court, holding hands with his friends, surrounded by his legal team, waiting to hear the decision that would not only define his life but also reshape the landscape of marriage equality in the United States. When Justice Anthony Kennedy began reading the decision, Jim immediately sensed the weight of the moment. My first reaction was, We won, he recalls. And then it sunk inYeah, Jim, we won.Holy hell. This decision, our decision to fight, had such enormous repercussions, such enormous impact on our community, on our nation, he continues, still seemingly in disbelief a decade later.That victoryObergefell v. Hodgesbecame a landmark ruling, legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide and affirming the dignity of countless LGBTQ+ couples. But for Jim, the road to history began in an intimate and deeply personal place: his love for his late husband, John Arthur. How the Love Story Turned into a Civil Rights Battle Jim and John had been together for over 20 years when John was diagnosed with ALS. As his health deteriorated, the couple realized that their time together was running out. In a final act of love and defiance, they decided to marry. We started talking about marriage in the mid-90s, but we wanted marriage, not just a symbolic ceremony, Jim explains.When the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was struck down in 2013, they saw their chance. With the help of friends and supporters, the couple flew from their home state of Ohiowhere same-sex marriage was still bannedto Maryland, where they were legally wed on the tarmac of the airport, inside a medical transport plane.Just that experience of saying I do and making our promises to each otherit changed us, Jim remembers. In some ways, nothing changed, but in the really important ways, everything changed, he reflects, noting with a grin how they started constantly calling each other husband.But Ohio refused to recognize their union. John was dying, and the state would not allow Jims name to be listed as his surviving spouse on his death certificate. Faced with this erasure, Jim took a step he never anticipatedhe sued.I never imagined that my love story with John would lead to a Supreme Court case, Jim says. John and I werent activists. We werent out and about. Most of our friends were straight married couples. For us to end up doing this wasnt something we ever dreamed about. But in the face of discrimination, they foughtnot just for their marriage, but for the rights of countless others.Sadly, John never had the opportunity to see the outcome of their efforts, as he passed away on October 22, 2013. Not surprisingly, [after the decision] my first thought was, John, I wish you were here. I wish you could know our marriage can never be erased.And then it hit me, for the first time in my life as an out gay man, I felt like an equal American, he says.When I walked out of the courtroom, the crowd just opened up before us. People were crying, cheering, trying to hug us, high-five us. It was electric, Jim recalls.That victory, however, came with unexpected weight. People have called me Mr. Marriage, which I find a little weird, Jim admits. But I was so fortunate to be part of the fight for marriage equality. It wasnt something John and I ever planned. It was just something that happened because we found ourselves in a spot where we had to ask ourselves: What do we believe in? And what are we willing to fight for? I always knew Id be sharing my story for the rest of my life, he says. But now it feels different. Now, I tell my story not just with joy but with fearfear that this story will be erased, our marriage will be erased, that our right to say I do will be erased.With anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment rising in political spheres, Jim urges the community to remain vigilant. We have taken some great steps forward, but with every bit of progress in our nation, we take steps back. If we dont remind people where weve been, were going to lose it. Still, he remains hopeful. I feel fortunate that I can be a voice for our community, that I can continue to fight for those who are marginalized and vulnerable because the LGBTQ+ community includes everyoneand we must fight for all of us. A Legacy of Love Despite the weight of his role in history, Jim still sees his journey as deeply personal. It still feels surreal to me that theres a Supreme Court case with my name on it, he reflects. But we fought for our sense of love, our sense of family, and our ability to live, to exist, and to be treated with dignity.There are millions of people out there fighting [once again] for whats right, fighting to make the world better.     LGBTQ+ individuals have unique challenges when it comes to addiction. When pursuing recovery services, some clients can face difficult issues such as discrimination or judgment, which can limit the healing process.It may even discourage some people from pursuing the lifesaving care services they need. Its important to explore why location, community support and affirming care are critical for LGBTQ+ individuals achieving sobriety.Higher Rates of Substance UseOver the years, researchers have examined the rates of substance use among individuals who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. According to Rehab.coms Drug Use Statistics Report, those who identified as a sexual minority were nearly twice as likely to use substances than those who identified as heterosexuals.Sexual minorities also had an increased likelihood of using multiple substances such as alcohol, cocaine and heroin. Even more daunting, the Human Rights Campaign found that the risk of substance use among transgender youth was four times higher than cisgender individuals. One of the possible causes of this is the isolation that LGBTQ+ members can experience in society at times.Other challenges that contribute to this increased usage include family rejection, discrimination and a lack of support. This research highlights the increased need for specific programs for LGBTQ+ individuals at addiction treatment facilities.Experiences of LGBTQ+ Members Seeking TreatmentWhile addiction treatment centers may offer many of the same effective recovery services, it unfortunately doesnt mean that the experiences of LGBTQ+ members are equal to their counterparts. Researchers looked into the experiences of individuals who received treatment in facilities that did not offer LGBTQ+ specific programs.Some of the patient level experiences that were found to have occurred included name-calling, bullying, sexual harassment and physical distancing from peers. The negative experiences were not just limited to the patients. LGBTQ+ staff members also experienced name-calling as well as misgendering and lack of intervention in peer bullying. As a result of the stigma and discrimination that patients experienced, some individuals resorted to identity concealment and substance use relapse.Participants in the study provided recommendations to help promote more affirming care within addiction treatment facilities. Some of the recommendations included rigorous staff training, non-discrimination policies and direct involvement of LGBTQ+ clients in substance use policy making and treatment planning.Availability of LGBTQ+ Specific ProgramsA study looked into the availability of LGBTQ+ specific services at substance abuse facilities within the United States. Researchers found that only 17.6 percent of substance abuse facilities offered these specific services.Interestingly, it was found that while states with a higher LGBTQ+ population positively correlated with mental health facilities offering LGBTQ+ specific programs, it wasnt the case for substance abuse facilities. Nonetheless, places with a higher degree of acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals can more likely provide a supportive atmosphere. There may also be more sober living arrangements and social networks within the community which can be a great support system for individuals in recovery.Unfortunately, the case can be the opposite for locations that have limited resources and may be less understanding of these issues. A lack of specific LGBTQ+ programs may lower the likelihood that an individual will seek help for their addiction due to the fear for ones safety and the possibility of receiving judgment. As a result of the stigma and discrimination that patients experienced, some individuals resorted to identity concealment and substance use relapse.Participants in the study provided recommendations to help promote more affirming care within addiction treatment facilities. Some of the recommendations included rigorous staff training, non-discrimination policies and direct involvement of LGBTQ+ clients in substance use policy making and treatment planning.Availability of LGBTQ+ Specific ProgramsA study looked into the availability of LGBTQ+ specific services at substance abuse facilities within the United States. Researchers found that only 17.6 percent of substance abuse facilities offered these specific services.Interestingly, it was found that while states with a higher LGBTQ+ population positively correlated with mental health facilities offering LGBTQ+ specific programs, it wasnt the case for substance abuse facilities. Nonetheless, places with a higher degree of acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals can more likely provide a supportive atmosphere. There may also be more sober living arrangements and social networks within the community which can be a great support system for individuals in recovery.Unfortunately, the case can be the opposite for locations that have limited resources and may be less understanding of these issues.     While on set for Love Inc.s milestone 10th issue cover shoot (now available on newsstands nationwide!) we knew we wanted to do something extra special for our cover stars, Lance Bass and Michael Turchin. Not only are they celebrating their 10-year wedding anniversary (talk about perfect timing), but theyve also long been icons of LGBTQ+ love and visibility, both in the entertainment world and beyond. So we decided to take a sweet trip down memory laneliterally.During a break on set, we surprised the couple with a mini version of their original wedding cake, and their reaction was everything.The original cake a seven-tier masterpiece was created by The Butter End Cakery in Santa Monica, California, and was anything but traditional.     Chris Hughes has opened up about his relationship with Jojo Siwa and her sexuality in a new interview with The Sun's Fabulous Magazine.The 32-year-old media mogul met the 22-year-old reality TV star on the set of Celebrity Big Brother UK in April, and following their stint on the show, the couple has faced a substantial amount of backlash. Siwa, who previously identified as lesbian, came out as queer and updated her pronouns on live TV, while her relationship with Hughes was still platonic and budding. Following the show's finale, Siwa swiftly broke up with her girlfriend, Kath Ebbs, at the Celebrity Big Brother UK after party after she flew out to London to attend. Hughes and Siwa began dating shortly after. "It upsets me that she is being thrown hate online," Hughes said in his latest interview. "I do feel a sense of responsibility that being with me has led to her getting hate. I dont understand how anyone could be mean to someone as caring as her."Hughes took the time to clarify that Siwa is "still part of the LGBTQ+ community." "Joelle has been with girls all her life," said Hughes, using Siwa's real first name. "She is bisexual. Shes not now straight just because shes with me." He also said that they "both want kids." The lovebirds met in April 2025. Hughes went on to address speculation about his own sexuality. "Ive had more people call me gay in the last two months of my life than ever before. But it doesnt bother me as long as people arent nasty, opinions are fine," said Hughes. "I may be feminine in the way I do things, but I wouldnt change the way I am for anything. I cry a lot, but we live in a world where toxic masculinity exists, and there isnt an ounce of that in my body."This interview comes after a week of pregnancy rumors swirling around Siwa. She's been fanning the flames of the rumor on social media, making a two-truths-and-a-lie TikTok with one of the options being, "I'm pregnant." Siwa's mom left a comment on her video that read, "Grandma Jess reporting for duty." In June, Siwa opened up about her evolving sexuality. "When I came out at 17, I said, 'Im pansexual, because I dont care [about gender].' But then I kind of boxed myself in and I said, 'Im a lesbian.' And I think I did that because of the pressure." When the interviewer asked her where that pressure came from, she said, "In a weird way, I think it came a little bit from inside the [LGBTQ] community at times. From people I know, from partners Ive had. You just get put in this world where you feel like, because you now have said, 'Oh, I'm a lesbian,' you have to be a lesbian. And the truth is, sexuality is fluid."Though perhaps a bit messy in execution, Siwa said that she's "beyond happy with it all," referring to her coming out process, and if she "could go back in time, I wouldnt change a thing. Really. Zero. I would change nothing." In the midst of all the hubbub, Siwa dropped out of the Back Lot Bash in late June, a Chicago pride event that caters to queer women, at the last minute due to reported "scheduling conflicts."

    A "superwoke" Superman movie is leaping over box office records in a single bound!The new film from Warner Bros. and DC Studios has flown to an estimated $122 million at the North American box office over the weekend, making it the number one movie in the United States and Canada.Superman, starring David Corenswet in the titular role, has also earned $95 million overseas, bringing its total earnings to $217 million for its opening weekend, and making it one of the biggest film openings of the year. It's also one of only three films in 2025 to debut with more than $100 million in domestic ticket sales, according to USA Today.Its box office success comes despite conservative backlash to the film, calling it "woke" and complaining that it pushes a political agenda on viewers.Conservatives dubbed the new film, "Superwoke," after writer/director James Gunn said that Superman is an immigrant and the film tells that story."We don't go to the movie theater to be lectured to and to have someone throw their ideology onto us," Fox News commentator Kellyanne Conway said."Changing beloved characters, I dont think, is a great idea.     Celebrated queer poet Andrea Gibson dead at 49
    Andrea Gibson, a queer spoken word poet known for powerful pieces about identity, life, and love, has passed away.According to Gibson's Facebook page, the 49-year-old poet passed away on July 14 "in their home surrounded by their wife, Meg, four ex-girlfriends, their mother and father, dozens of friends, and their three beloved dogs."Gibson was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2021."Since learning they had cancer in 2021, Andrea has been a champion of finding beauty in unlikely places and gratitude in the hardest hours. Over the last four years, they danced with their diagnosis and continually aimed their internal compass toward joy. One of the last things Andrea said on this plane was, 'I f*cking loved my life,'" the Facebook post says."Not long ago, Andrea wrote a poem titled 'Love Letter From the Afterlife.' In it, they offered this line: 'I am more here than I ever was before. I am more with you than I ever could have imagined.' Today, and all days forward, we hope you feel Andreas enormous spirit and immense presence beside you."Gibson's first book of poetry, Pole Dancing to Gospel Hymns, was published in 2008. They released six more books, as well as seven albums of poems, in their career.Gibson was the subject of the recent documentary Come See Me in the Good Light, which won the Festival Favorite award at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.     Rochester group launches worlds first trans laureate program

Named after Bernadine Casseus, a beloved local transgender woman and ballroom community advocate, the program arrives amid an increasingly hostile national climate for transgender people and aims to uplift transgender, nonbinary and gender-expansive individuals through civic engagement, artistic expression and public storytelling.The Trans Laureate embodies our belief that art can heal, unite and catalyze change, said Marie-Adlina de la Ferrire, founder of Navassa, niece of Casseus, and community editor of equalpride.De la Ferrire said the program was inspired both by her late aunts legacy and the urgent need to support trans voices at a time of widespread cultural and political attacks. Rather than focusing solely on defense and survival, she said the program seeks to place trans brilliance center stage, empowering individuals to lead through art and connection.The Trans Laureate will serve a one-year term starting in January 2026, curating public events such as performances, workshops, readings and exhibitions, while acting as a cultural ambassador locally and beyond. The position includes a $5,000 budget for an honorarium and community programming.Applicants must be at least 21 years old, identify as transgender, nonbinary or gender-expansive, and have a demonstrated record in community engagement, the arts, humanities or storytelling. Finalists will be interviewed in the fall, and the inaugural laureate will be announced during Trans Awareness Week in November.The program expands Navassas broader mission to merge art and civic life. Other projects include Flower City Queens, a fundraising calendar showcasing drag performers from Rochester, with proceeds supporting LGBTQ+ initiatives in both Greater Rochester and Haiti.The program has received initial support, including a $2,500 Pride Grant from Trillium Health Foundation. To ensure long-term sustainability, Navassa has launched a GoFundMe campaign and is seeking additional support from cultural institutions, foundations and individuals committed to trans-led programming.Securing an inaugural Pride Grant from Trillium Health Foundation shows that our region stands behind trans creatives but lasting impact will take collective effort, de la Ferrire said.
