It shows teenagers that theyre going to be okay, and that they should embrace and celebrate exactly who they are.What have you heard from LGBTQ+ young people regarding the show?Ive heard from many LGBTQ+ young people that Heartstopper has helped them in their own life in some way, whether thats in their coming out journey, finding self-acceptance, help with reaching out to family and friends, and speaking more openly about difficult subjects such as mental illness.In season 3 we see the character Isaac continue to explore what it means to be aroace (asexual and aromantic). What inspired you to include this narrative, and why do you think its important for audiences to see asexuality represented alongside other queer identities?It was important to me to include an aroace character in Heartstopper because I am also aroace and I know firsthand the effects of the lack of representation of aroace people in media. There are extremely few examples of aro or ace characters in TV and film, which contributes to the fact that many a-spec people have no idea that they might be aro and/or ace, because theyve never heard of those identities.Heartstopper is really a perfect opportunity for me to provide some representation to those people, and I hope that it will help them find some understanding and acceptance of themselves, or at least inspire them to learn more. I also hope that it will teach people about these identities, so that our community can be better understood.How do you hope Heartstopper encourages allyship within the LGBTQ+ community, and what key lessons do you want viewers to take away?I hope that by showing a range of experiences under the queer umbrella, it promotes the importance of empathy, friendship, and community. The main lesson to take away from Heartstopper is that no matter what dark time you might be going through, with the right support around you there is always joy and hope to be found.What else can we expect in Season 3?Theres so much to explore in season 3! A former leader at a Michigan church has been charged with 11 felony counts related to alleged child sexually abusive activity.As Michigan Live reported earlier this week, 29-year-old Zachary Joseph Radcliff was arraigned on October 20 and charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, child sexually abusive activity, aggravated child sexually abusive activity, and using the internet to communicate with another to commit a crime. Vance, and the MAGAsphere have resurrected outdated and archaic definitions of heteronormativity, idealizing women being consigned to the home to raise children and men as breadwinners performing super-masculine roles of strength, power, and control.It is no mere coincidence or slip of the tongue that Donald Trump waxed non-poetically for 20 minutes at a recent rally honoring and glorifying the supposed giant schlong of legendary golfer Arnold Palmer. Equally deliberate is his choice of playing Macho Man at certain gatherings. Add this to Vances diatribes against supposed Childless Cat Ladies, whom he vilified for not accepting their alleged God-given mandate to multiply for the sake of producing good consumers for the capitalist machine.TheAmerican Civil Liberties Unionhas recorded 530 anti-LGBTQ+ bills that have been proposed this year in the U.S. as of September. These bills cover several issues, including the banning of LGBTQ+ books and topics in school curriculums, banning transgender people from using the school facilities of their choice, banning transgender athletes from sports teams, banning gender-affirming healthcare, and banning accurate information on identification documents for transgender people.While transgender topics are not among the top concerns for the U.S. electorate, accordingto a Gallup poll, Trump and his allies have been belligerent in forcefully pushing anti-trans messaging in the closing weeks of the campaign. The Trump campaign and Republican political action committees have spent more than$21 millionon anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ+ TV ads as of October 9. LGBTQ+ rights as a political football The 1992 Republican Party platform, the first U.S. presidential election after the fall of the Soviet Union, stated that [The Republican Party] opposes any legislation or law which legally recognizes same-sex marriages and allows such couples to adopt children or provide foster care.In the 2004 election, George Bush and his political advisor, Karl Rove, used the tactic of encouraging Republican state legislatures to place anti-same-sex marriage ballot initiatives to help turn out the Republican vote. Prop 8 in California which would effectively ban same-sex couples from enjoying the rights, responsibilities, and benefits of marriage passed in 2008. In Florida and Arizona, state constitutional amendments legally defining marriage as between a man and a woman also passed. In Arkansas, a ballot measure banning same-sex couples from adopting children passed as well.The origin of the scapegoat dates back to the Book of Leviticus (16:20-22). On the Day of Atonement, a live goat was selected by lot. The high priest placed both hands on the goats head and confessed over it the sins of the people. In this way, the sins were symbolically transferred to the animal, which was then cast out into the wilderness. This process thus purged the people, for a time, of their feelings of guilt, shame, and fear.Stereotyping can and often does result in singling out individuals and groups as targets of hostility and violence, even though they may have little or nothing to do with the offenses for which they stand accused. That is when stereotyping becomes scapegoating. With scapegoating, there is the tendency to view all members of the group as inferior and to assume that they are all alike in most respects. This attitude often leads to even further marginalization.When stereotyping occurs, people tend to overlook all other characteristics of the group. Individuals sometimes use stereotypes to justify the subjugation of members of that group. In this sense, stereotypes conform to the literal meaning of the word prejudice, which is a prejudgment, derived from the Latinpraejudicium. The limitations of states rights I have often heard it said that the issue of whether to legalize same-sex marriage, transgender rights, and reproductive healthcare rights should be left up to the individual states to decide. Conservatives argue that the national government should not intrude by imposing its will on the states.I argue most emphatically that reproductive healthcare, marriage rights in general, and transgender peoples right to healthcare and equal access to public facilities are and must remain federal government issues.Take the following cases, for example.If the issue of prohibiting the practice of slavery had not been settled in Lincolns 1863 Emancipation Proclamation and later codified in the US Constitution, I question whether Southern states would have voluntarily outlawed the practice of slavery, and I indeed believe the practice of legalized slavery would have existed long after the Civil War in some states. If the issue of school desegregation had not been settled in the 1954 Brown v Board of Education US Supreme Court decision and later strengthened in the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964, I question whether the states would have voluntarily relinquished the practice of racial segregation, and I indeed believe that this practice would remain to this very day in some states, though arguably it does continuede facto.If the issue of prohibiting individuals from different races from engaging in sexual relations (miscegenation) had not been settled in 1967 by the U.S. Supreme Court in Loving v Virginia, I question whether the states would have voluntarily relinquished the practice of arresting and incarcerating people of different races found engaging in sexual relations, and I indeed believe that these arrests and incarcerations would remain to this very day in some states.The founders of this country provided a mechanism for the protection of minorities against the tyranny of the majority. The checks and balances between the three branches of government and the authority of national legislation have time and again offered some form of protection for minority rights and responsibilities though of course not perfectly and not without major adjustments and reversal of policy along the way. If we leave these important issues of social justice and social inequality to majority rule, then many of the evils that have plagued this country throughout its history will never end. How tyranny is bornWe still live in a society that attempts to define and perpetuate fairytales about the real lives of women and LGBTQ+ people and even proclaims that some of us do not have a right to exist. But exist we do, everywhere and in all walks of life.Women and LGBTQ+ people in many areas of this country continue to be regarded as second-class citizens at best. We continue to be represented as sinners and destroyers of the traditional family, as recruiters and molesters of young, impressionable children, and as antithetical to traditional values.The bigotry once again reminds me of the concept of tyranny of the majority articulated in the 1830s by Alexis de Tocqueville, French political scientist and diplomat, who traveled across the United States for nine months between 1831 and 1832 conducting research for his epic work,Democracy in America.Though he favored U.S. style democracy, he found its major limitation to be in its stifling of independent thought and independent beliefs. In a country that promoted the notion that the majority rules, this effectively silenced minorities. This is a crucial point because in a democracy, without specific guarantees of minority rights, there is a danger of domination or tyranny over others whose ideas, ideals, or identities are not accepted by the majority.Progressive people are standing up to the terrorism of false and fraudulent definitions of family, and we are expanding the parameters. We are removing from our vocabulary words that delineate people according to relationship status, for example, the value-laden terms unwed mother, illegitimacy and illegitimate child, bastard and bastard child, out of wedlock, bachelor, old maid, Miss, Mrs, and other exclusionary terms.We are consigning these words to the archives of history because when currently used, they continue to separate people from one another, and they result in lower self-esteem.Human diversity is a true gift, as evidenced by the fact that families come in a great variety of packages, with differing shapes and sizes, colors, and wrappings. If, however, we still need to cling to a common definition of family, I would remind us of one offered by singers/songwriters, Ron Romanovsky and Paul Phillips, who tell us, the definitions plain for anyone to see. Its official! The national GOP platform has been stripped of all anti-LGBT language! wrote Charles Moran, president of the Log Cabin Republicans (LCR), earlier this year. Moran and his queer conservative group have been seeking to expand former President Donald Trumps LGBTQ+ voter support, just as it grew between the 2016 and 2020 elections.Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) calls Morans claim an absurdity. Despite Morans claim, the GOP platform promises to ban LGBTQ+ content from schools and roll back legal protections for transgender people of all ages. The platform also promises religious liberty protections for Christians who discriminate against queer people. Related Rep. Mark Takano makes direct appeal to progressives wary about supporting Kamala Harris This is too important election to sit out, he said. And its not just about Harris views. Not a single Republican is willing to vote for the Equality Act, which would protect LGBTQ people from discrimination in matters of housing, employment, and public accommodation, Torres tells LGBTQ Nation. But Santos resigned after barely a year, embroiled in campaign finance scandals and lies about major parts of his personal biography.We have no interest in tokenism, Torres said of Santos. We have an interest in policy. We have no interest in any candidate, including LGBTQ candidates, who oppose LGBTQ rights. You cannot be pro-civil rights while opposing the Civil Rights Act, and pro-voting rights while opposing the Voting Rights Act, you cannot be pro-equality while opposing the Equality Act [which Santos did].This November, voters have the historic opportunity to expand the number of out LGBTQ+ House members from nine to 15, which would be the largest group of queer national legislators ever to exist in the lower congressional chamber. Torres is fighting hard to make that possibility a reality. Hes co-chair of Equality PAC, a political action committee that champions LGBTQ+ House candidates and allies who support the Equality Act, which would outlaw anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination nationwide something Torres calls the Holy Grail of LGBTQ equality in America.Equality PAC is ushering in a golden age of LGBTQ representation in Congress, Torres says. Were poised to elect the first trans member of Congress, Sarah McBride of Delaware; the first LGBTQ member of Congress from the South, Julie Johnson of Texas; and the first LGBTQ Latina from Washington state, Emily Randall.The Equality PAC, which has raised $50 million for its candidates since its founding in 2014, helped Johnson avoid a runoff election by just 100 votes, Torres said. The PAC also helped Randall win a fiercely contested congressional race in her home state. While he and many other LGBTQ+ people and allies consider the far right implacable in its anti-queer stances, Torres says increasing the number of LGBTQ+ House members matters when it comes to forming intra- and inter-party alliances and also its representation from within the queer community.Take McBride, for instance, Torres says. As the nations first-ever trans member of Congress, shell be the best person to speak about issues affecting the trans community. This is particularly important as Republicans nationwide vilify trans people as a threat to the safety and well-being of women and children, a decades-old conservative trope.When a community exists as an abstraction to you, then you can easily demonize it. You can easily dehumanize it, Torres says. But when you have to stare someone in the face in the halls of Congress, it changes the dynamic. It brings the human element that is lacking in Congress. In a somewhat similar vein, Amanda Simpson made history during the administration of former President Barack Obama as the first trans presidential appointee. In response to the national media attention and anti-trans commentary, Simpson told ABC News.com, Being the first sucks.If McBride wins, shell be the most visible trans politician in the nation and possibly a target for anti-trans hatred at a time when violent threats against public officials have increased.However, Torres says Equality PAC is fully invested in her success as a public servant, and that also means ensuring shes protected, supported, and capable of remaining a strident advocate in the House. Theres no doubt in my mind that shes going to excel in Congress, Torres says. In order to be a first, you have to be exceptional in order to overcome the barriers that the trans community continues to face. And Sarah is exceptional.Torres says Equality PAC has regularly punched above its weight class as one of the youngest and smallest political action committees, raising over $50 million from supporters nationwide since its founding.Thats no small achievement, he says. The Trevor Project released new research today about the mental health of intersex individuals, revealing the worrisome fact that 33% of LGBTQ+ intersex young people have either been subjected to or threatened with conversion therapy at some point in their lives, a higher rate than the 12% of endosex (as in, not intersex) LGBTQ+ youth who said the same. The survey shows an increased rate of attempted suicide among queer intersex youth.The data, coming from the 2024 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People, analyzes survey responses from intersex people between the ages of 13 and 24. 13% of intersex youth report having been subjected to conversion therapy, while 20% have been threatened with it. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Increasingly troubling is the fact that conversion therapy attempts are associated with a significantly increased risk of attempted suicide. 43% of LGBTQ+ intersex youth subjected to conversion therapy report attempting suicide within the last year, compared to 22% of LGBTQ+ intersex individuals who were not subjected to conversion therapy.55% of intersex LGBTQ+ young people report considering suicide within the past year, compared to 39% of endosex LGBTQ+ individuals. 25% of intersex LGBTQ+ young people report having attempted suicide, compared to 11% of endosex LGBTQ+ young people.The data shows that roughly 11% of intersex youth have received an invasive surgery that they did not consent to in order to conform to normative standards of sex, typically before the age of one. 17% report ever receiving such surgery with or without their consent and this led to higher rates of suicide attempts, at 34% compared to their intersex peers who had not received such surgery, at 18%, among intersex LGBTQ+ youth. Rates of attempting suicide were higher among intersex LGBTQ+ young people who had undergone a surgery which altered their anatomy and/or organs to fit normative expectations, compared to their intersex LGBTQ+ peers who had not undergone such a procedure. This discrepancy highlights the long-lasting harm and psychological damage which can be caused by medical attempts to cure intersex individuals, the study says.According to the survey, 73% of intersex LGBTQ+ individuals report increased symptoms of anxiety, compared to 66% of endosex LGBTQ+ individuals. The rates of depression, though, were about the same; 55% of intersex young people report experiencing recent symptoms of depression, compared to 53% of endosex LGBTQ+ individuals.The data also reveals that the vast majority of intersex individuals have an LGBTQ+ identity in addition to being intersex. Most of these young people identified as gay, asexual, or bi+ in some way, and only 2% of intersex LGBTQ+ youth said they were straight. 75% of intersex individuals in the sample identified as transgender or nonbinary, with 19% identifying as cisgender and the remaining percentage questioning their identity. The survey also shows where their specific gender identities lie. Specifically, 45% of intersex LGBTQ+ young people identified as nonbinary, 20% as transgender men or boys, 11% as cisgender women and girls, 10% as transgender women and girls, and 7% as cisgender boys and men, says the Trevor Project.The survey data comes from the broader 2024 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People. 1.4% of participants in that survey were intersex individuals. 256 intersex individuals participated in the study and were recruited through targeted ads. The Trevor Project emphasizes that this data does not apply to straight and cisgender individuals who do not identify under the LGBTQ+ umbrella due to their exclusion from the survey. A new survey focused on voters opinions about transgender rights has uncovered good news for the LGBTQ+ community and confirmation that the Harris-Walz campaign is on the right track when it comes to their focus on fundamental freedoms.In the midst of a flood of disparaging ads about transgender people released by the Trump campaign and his allies and other MAGA Republican candidates, Data for Progress asked voters if transgender people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. An overwhelming number of all voters, 74%, strongly or somewhat agreed, including 58% of Republicans. The Reagan Administration was determined to ignore the AIDS epidemic. As the death toll climbed across the country, Reagan refused to even say the word AIDS, waiting until 1985 to name the deadly illness. It wasnt until 1987 that he formed a task force to address the disease, and his administration did not implement a single one of its 597 recommendations.In response, a group of four gay men in Minneapolis came together to form the Philanthrofund Foundation, or PFund for short, in 1987. Aaron Zimmerman, the current Executive Director of the organization, told LGBTQ Nation the founders primary principle: We need to save ourselves. All four men donated $1,000 to their new organization about $2,800 each after adjusting for inflation and asked the community for support. As soon as PFund started, the team needed to get over a major roadblock to community support. At the time, nothing was safe from homophobia. So while Philanthrofund Foundation may seem like a strange name, it reflects the founders worries about naming their new foundation something obviously queer. Philanthrofund Foundation was safe neighbors and mail carriers would never suspect PFund was by and for LGBTQ+ people if they saw mail, signs, or flyers. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The name is even more important when you learn the second reason PFund was founded.After LGBTQ+ people died of AIDS, their estate would typically go to their next of kin. All of their belongings were being returned to the families that abused and rejected and abandoned them; to families that, in all likelihood, never once visited them in the hospital; to families that may have believed AIDS was divine punishment for being gay. The PFund Foundation gave queer people another option they could write their will and leave part of their estate to the organization instead. When the families read the will, a name like Philanthrofund Foundation wouldnt set off any alarms.Oh, half the money is going to Philanthrofund Foundation? Oh, that sounds charitable, Zimmerman explained. The wills were less likely to be contested by bigoted family members thanks to the neutral-sounding moniker. As PFund received more donations, the founders decided the LGBTQ+ community should get to decide how they would use the money after all, it was the communitys money in the first place. They would get together with other LGBTQ+ people and everyone would review the grant applications. Today, PFund calls this community-centered grantmaking (CCG).Many things have changed in the decades since PFund was founded, but parallels have cropped up in the last few years. Trans health care is being restricted, gay couples are being denied wedding services, and books featuring or written by LGBTQ+ people are being pulled off school and public library shelves. And once again, LGBTQ+ people were left without support during a pandemic.History definitely repeats itself, Zimmerman said. It just reaffirms PFunds reason for existing. PFund has also changed over the years early on, PFund was very gay and lesbian-focused; Zimmerman said that if you ask lesbians about those first years, theyll tell you it was very gay-focused. In 2015, PFund officially committed to ensuring its grants reached three priority communities: Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ people of colo; trans and gender nonconforming communities; and rural LGBTQ+ people.Weve really tried and tried and failed to define and reimagine over the last 10 years or so to define what it actually means to be equitable in that way, Zimmerman explained. Theyve worked on their application process, their advertising, their grant review rubrics anything they can do to improve equity.Based on the numbers, its working. Last year, PFunds Equity Fund grants went to some of the hardest-to-reach communities, with almost 40 percent reaching rural LGBTQ+ people, more than half going to trans people, and more than 70 percent reaching BIPOC LGBTQ+ people. As a comparison, the highly-resourced Gates Foundation provided 43 percent of its grants to rural communities in 2023. Its no wonder the Gates Foundation highlighted their new Equitable Grantmaking Community of Practice, which works on ideas about community-led strategies, participatory grantmaking, and new funding models in their 2022 DEI report.Almost four decades later, community-centered grantmaking remains the center of PFunds giving philosophy. Theyve refined the process over time of course at first, the founders would personally invite people to join a grant review board. Now people apply to be on the review boards an experience volunteers find so rewarding that PFund may soon need to add a limit to how many times each person can apply per year.PFund also works with far more money than it did at the start the Equity Fund awarded over $300,000 in 2023 and that was just one grant program. It has also expanded to cover a larger region and award grants to organizations across the upper Midwest and the First Nations therein. That expansion has changed how it forms its community review boards. The number of people on the review board changes based on the grant. The scholarship review boards have as many as 40 members, while grants with fewer applicants might have 14. PFund also tries to have at least one of its board members in each group of reviewers; that way, the board can make sure PFunds staff arent taking too much control of the process.PFund also tries to select reviewers that reflect the community the grant is supposed to serve. For example, all the reviewers for their current Transcend Fund which aims to support trans and gender nonconforming communities are transgender, gender nonconforming, or nonbinary. The Transcend Fund reviewers come from four of the five states that PFund serves, which helps ensure the grants arent all being given to organizations in PFunds home state of Minnesota.Staff create rubrics for reviewers to use while grading applications through an intensive community listening process that determines PFunds strategic goals. The goals are distilled into principles, and the rubrics try to guide reviewers to applicants who meet those principles. This year, for example, PFund heard that first, LGBTQ+ communities feel like they dont have control over their political futures; second, that they struggle to access basic needs; and third, which came as a surprise to Zimmerman, that LGBTQ+ people feel lonely and want better community spaces where they can gather. So challenging those became the three strategic goals.PFunds staff and board of directors worked to find principles that apply to each of those goals and came up with five: holistic health; education and leadership; economic empowerment; visibility and advocacy; and vibrancy and community. This years rubrics try to help reviewers prioritize applications that support at least one of those principles.Some things have stayed the same, though: Reviewers get time to read through the applications theyre assigned and grade them, then meet as a group to choose who will receive the awards. Ultimately, the community gets to decide who they want to support, a point that Zimmerman stressed in our conversation. This year Zimmerman met with a trans theater group and encouraged them to apply to the Transcend Fund. When the application deadline came closer, he reached out again and asked why they hadnt submitted a grant application. The theater group felt like there were other, more important things that needed to be funded to support trans people.Zimmerman had heard queer people across the midwest saying they needed more community spaces. He knew that was one of the strategic goals this year.Its best when we can get a diverse set of applicants to really showcase to the community all of the ways in which were trying to combat anti-LGBTQ or anti-trans rhetoric and hate and violence, Zimmerman explained. He hopes LGBTQ+ organizations wont self-select out of PFund grant applications.Why dont you let the community decide whether or not they want to have theater be one of the priorities? he asked them. A 38-year-old dad is in police custody after tying a noose around the neck of his sons teenage friend because he said he was gay.According to the King County Prosecutors Office in Bremerton, Washington, Joseph Sweeney overheard a conversation his son and the friend were having and asked if the 14-year-old was gay. The boy replied, Yes, is it a crime to be gay in this house? Related This dad beat up his 2-year-old son for acting gay. Hes going away for a long time. He told the judge his son preferred playing with Barbie dolls and kitchen sets to robots, cars, and soccer balls, so he punched him in the face. Thats when Sweeney put a noose around his neck and tightened it, according to sheriffs deputies with the Kitsap County Sheriffs Office. He later made jokes about the 14-year-old boy being a princess.A search of Sweeneys trailer turned up an unregistered firearm, which Sweeney admitted to owning, despite being prohibited from gun possession due to a prior domestic violence protection order issued in Kansas City last year.The boys stepfather, who lives in the home where the incident took place, said it was blown out of proportion.I do see why everybody is going to be so concerned about this situation, but to be honest, all of what is being claimed right now is incredibly false and these types of things would not happen in my house, Thorne Toliver told KIRO News.Yes, a rope was involved with their play, but it didnt get out of hand, he said. As goes for tightening, there was never tightening. Thats not something that would happen, and certainly in my house. Theres not going to be any form of extreme violence or hate towards each other, he added.His stepson seemed to downplay the incident as well, saying of his biological dad, I told him to be careful and he got it around his neck, making sure it wasnt tight at all, not to hurt him. Later he got it around my stomach. I accidentally got it tight because I was scrambling around.He didnt assault us, the 13-year-old said. Amazon Primes Good Omens TV show was a hit when it premiered in 2019, so much so that the show is headed for a third season after it was only supposed to air for one.Even though season three was already meant to be the end of the beloved series, production for the show came to a screeching halt a few months ago after Neil Gaiman, who authored the novel of the same name alongside Terry Pratchett, was accused of sexual assault by five different women.In the wake of the backlash against Gaiman, Variety reported that the final season will not only carry on without him, but that it will also only consist of a singular 90-minute episode.See on InstagramAccording to Variety, production for the episode will resume in early 2025 in Scotland. But while Harris is not expected to win the state on election day, as NBC News notes her Houston rally comes as the Senate race between Sen. Ted Cruz (R) and Rep. Colin Allred (D) has tightened. Allred is also expected to appear at Fridays rally. The Harris campaign told NBC News this week that the vice president would address the impact of the states six-week abortion ban at the event.A Houston native, Beyonc has so far not endorsed a 2024 presidential candidate and has remained silent about the race. But she has supported Democratic nominees in the past, performing at former President Barack Obamas 2008 inauguration and at a rally for Hillary Clintons 2016 campaign.She has also been a long-time supporter of LGBTQ+ rights. In 2013, she publicly voiced her support for legalizing same-sex marriage. At a Raleigh, North Carolina, stop on her 2016 Formation World Tour, she spoke out against the states anti-trans bathroom law, H.B. 2, which was later repealed. After the Trump administration rescinded Obama-era protections for transgender students in public schools in 2017, the singer posted a link to LGBTQ+ youth advocacy organization GLSENs 100 Days of Kindness initiative, commenting that #LGBT students need to know we support them in a Facebook post. More recently, Beyonc released an entire album, 2022s Renaissance, inspired by and honoring Black queer ballroom and house music culture, dedicating the album to her late gay uncle. Out lesbian Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) is currently running for reelection. Shes facing a challenge from Republican entrepreneur Eric Hovde.Republicans have been releasing a slew of attack ads against Baldwin. One such ad, which comes from the Senate Leadership Fund Super PAC, claimed that Baldwin supported providing puberty blockers and sex change surgeries to minor children. Another ad from the Hovde campaign stated that Baldwin ensured hundreds of thousands of our tax dollars went to a Madison nonprofit that pushes an aggressive LGBTQ agenda on kids. Puberty Blockers and Sex ChangesThe claim that Baldwin supports puberty blockers and sex change surgeries likely stems from a post on X Baldwin published on October 5, 2023. The post quotes Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D), who showed a video that expresses his intent to veto anti-trans bills.Baldwin wrote: Trans kids deserve to feel safe and welcome in Wisconsin, not discriminated against. They deserve the freedom to just be kids, play sports, and get the health care they need, all without politicians butting in. Thanks for standing up for LGBTQ+ kids, @GovEvers. There is no evidence that Baldwin supports such surgeries for minors.However, the ad is likely referring to Evers commitment to veto any bill that restricts gender-affirming care for minors and the support Baldwin expressed for that. He did thisvery thingand vetoed a ban on gender-affirming care just months after the original video was published.Nevertheless, the ad suggests this is supporting a specific medical decision which is not the case. These types of vetoes express support for allowing families to decide what type of care is appropriate for them and their child, contrary to what the ad implies. I object to restricting physicians from providing evidence-based and medically appropriate care to their patients, restricting parents from making medical decisions with physicians to ensure their kids receive the healthcare they need, and preventing patients from receiving that basic, life-saving care, Evers wrote in his veto message.Gender-affirming care is medically necessary according to leading medical associations like the American Medical Association and also the U.S. government. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Offices for Civil Rights details how denial of coverage for gender-affirming care violates the Americans with Disabilities Act. Earlier this year, federal courts ruled that such care is medically necessary and needs to be included in state-funded health insurance plans.Gender-affirming care includes hormone replacement therapy, puberty blockers, fertility preservation treatments, and gender-affirming surgeries, which may include surgeries to change ones chest and genitalia. Puberty blockers are a safe, evidence-backed form of gender-affirming care that is widespread internationally. They are backed by medical institutions like the Endocrine Society and the American Medical Association.Minors almost never receive any form of gender-affirming surgery. In 2019, a study found that only 85 minors in the United States received any form of gender-affirming surgery at all. Of these minors, 96.4% received some type of top surgery, most commonly breast reductions. Almost all of the surgeries conducted were on minors between the ages of 15 and 17, and none were performed on minors under the age of 12. This same study found that cisgender boys with gynecomastia, a condition that leads to unwanted breast development, were more likely to get gender-affirming surgeries at a rate of 146.This low prevalence is in part due to the stringent guidelines protecting minors from receiving any type of care, especially surgeries. The Madison NonprofitThe claim about the Madison nonprofit refers to Baldwin directing $400,000 in funding earlier this year towards Briarpatch Youth Services, a runaway and homeless shelter for youth in the city of Madison.It is true that Briarpatch has a support group for LGBTQ+ youth called Teens Like Us, however none of the funding Baldwin sent went to this program. This program is only a weekly meeting group, and there is no evidence that Briarpatch provides any medical care for youth or that any agenda is being pushed. The group creates a welcoming, safe, and inclusive space for meeting other youth from the LGBTQ+ community.PolitiFact and Wisconsin Watch additionally have provided evidence that this is not true. In a statement given to LGBTQ Nation, Jill Pfeiffer, the Executive Director of Briarpatch, said: Reputable outlets such as PolitiFact and Wisconsin Watch have verified that public claims made about our agency are false. Briarpatch is not a clinic as has been claimed.The funding provided to Briarpatch through Baldwins efforts is earmarked to develop a therapeutic counseling program for youth who are experiencing homelessness and facing other challenges. Those funds cannot be used for other programs such as Teens Like Us.Regardless of political talking points, we continue to focus on strengthening our community by making sure youth facing hardships have access to voluntary resources and services they need to flourish and succeed. The Baldwin campaigns responseIn response to a request for comment from LGBTQ Nation, a representative with the Baldwin campaign directed us to the Wisconsin Watch fact check, one from The Advocate, and one from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Each of these refutes Hovdes claims, each suggesting that Hovde made false and/or misleading claims in his ad.Based on the above evidence, the claims made in the Senate Leadership Funds ad and the Hovde campaigns ad are false and entirely based on misleading information.LGBTQ Nation rates both claims as False.
