JD Vance bizarrely stresses that hes not gay while bashing transitioning as conversion therapy
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) and gay conservative podcaster Tim Dillon repeated transphobic right-wing talking points during an interview over the past weekend, with Vance stressing to Dillon that hes not gay. Dillon claimed that allies of transgender people want nine-year-old girls to have a beard, and Vance also claimed that medical transitioning is conversion therapy to turn gay people trans. During the interview, Vance claimed the medical industry is profiting off of transitioning minors and insinuated that they are trying to convince gay kids that they are, in fact, transgender. Related The GOP is spending millions on transphobic ads. Polls suggest it may backfire. It shows that Republicans are desperate right now. Im not a gay guy, but Ive heard this from gay friends of mine Vance said before Dillon started laughing uproariously at Vances need to say that hes not gay.JD Vance: Im not a gay guy pic.twitter.com/wlGbKlViwX PatriotTakes (@patriottakes) October 28, 2024Ive talked to this about gay friends who feel like, very personally affronted [by gender-affirming care for youth], Vance claimed. They feel like, if they were 14 years old, and maybe theyre confused Would somebody have had them transition? Course, yeah, in some ways its like the new its like the pharmaceutical answer to conversion therapy, right, is, Oh no, you know youre not gay, right? Youre a totally different gender!' Subscribe to our Newsletter today Vance offered no evidence to substantiate his claim that cis gay kids are being forced to transition. Earlier in their conversation, Dillon dishonestly framed a question about gender-affirming care for trans youth, asking sarcastically, Why cant a seven-year-old consent to a life-altering medical surgery? Is it because you guys are fascist? I dont understand. Like, why wouldnt you allow an eight-year-old to fully transition? Why cant a nine-year-old girl have a beard? Gender-affirming surgeries are never conducted on pre-pubescent children and almost never conducted on minors at all. Gender-affirming care for seven-year-olds involves letting them wear the clothes they want, go by a name that affirms their identity, and play with the toys they want.Vance then claimed that gender-affirming care is being provided by a profit-motivated entity [that] tries to manipulate government policy and has made billions of dollars off of cross-sex hormones for children.Thats kind of weird that the very people who are getting rich off this are also lobbying the American Medical Association [AMA] and the U.S. government to force this on American citizens, Vance added. The AMA is only one of numerous major medical associations that have recommended gender-affirming care as safe, effective, and essential to the well-being of trans youth for decades. In reality, there are only an estimated 300,000 trans people between the ages of 13 and 17 who might require such hormones, according to the Williams Institute. This group represents 0.08% of the entire U.S. population and the money made off of this group pales in comparison to the profit made by the pharmaceutical industry off of cisgender patients.Dillon then said that he and other out gay people are wondering, Why in Gods name would a five-year-old, a seven-year-old, a 12-year-old, a 14-year-old be taking puberty-blocking hormones, be transitioning Leave kids alone Its very simple. A lot of gay people feel that way. There are transgender people that feel that way. There are people all over the spectrum that feel that way. None of them are ever listened to. Yes, it is the most extreme, loudest voices in that movement that are listened to.Vance then said he came out in support of banning gender transition for minors during [his] Senate campaign. He then said that a friend of his who really disagrees with my views on transgender politics and kind of rejected our friendship over his views likely a reference to his transgender former Yale Law School classmate Sofia Nelson, who is transgender claimed that puberty blockers and hormone therapy for trans youth are totally reversible. That is totally and profoundly false, Vance said. While the long-term and side-effects of hormone therapy differ from patient to patient, they have been used safely on children mostly cisgender for decades to prevent early onset puberty and rare cancers. The Mayo Clinics website says that puberty blockers dont cause permanent physical changes. When a person stops taking GnRH analogues, puberty starts again.Dillon said, I think when weve got weve allowed the debate to be defined by a very extreme portion who its not about logic. Its about people throwing tantrums and people going, You have to agree with me.' He then said that nobody supports teaching children about critical race theory or gender theory, asking, Why are we not educating people in math, in reading and science? He was repeating a common and untrue right-wing talking point meant to dissuade taxpayers from supporting public schools. The Republican National Platform threatens to cut federal funding for any school pushing critical race theory, radical gender ideology, and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content on our children. The wide-ranging aim seeks to censor and punish any viewpoints that acknowledge institutional racism, misogyny, and queer phobia.Vance called leftist views on anti-racist education bullshit that has made people hate each other, adding, Lets get back to just trying to emphasize that were all human beings. Were all Americans.Earlier in their discussion, while talking about U.S. military presence in foreign countries, Dillon said, Now it seems to be that were shoehorning domestic issues into foreign policy, meaning that you can no longer sell a war by saying were there to democratize a country or we are there to preemptively invade a country before they attack us. But we can say we are there so that drag queens in Russia can have more of a say.Vance replied, You asked why we were in Afghanistan for 20 years, its like because the Afghanis really need to learn about gender studies. Both men were echoing right-wing talking points criticizing the military for embracing drag queens and Russian rhetoric, claiming that the West seeks to push gender perversions abroad. But the U.S. has not invaded Russia and is supporting Ukraine to protect its democracy and its independence, not to protect drag queens in Russia, and the war in Afghanistan was started in the wake of the 9/11 attacks over two decades ago.Vance then claimed, Yeah, [U.S. tax dollars are] funding programs to teach people that there are nonbinary genders out there. The exchange on LGBTQ+ issues starts at the 29:40 mark.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
