Voters trust Kamala Harris on trans equality issues over Donald Trump
A new Fox News poll shows that on one of the most contentious issues of this election equal rights for transgender people voters trust Vice President Kamala Harris more than they trust former President Donald Trump. The poll also showed that Harris has a 2-point lead. Related Despite new protections, LGBTQ+ people face massive discrmination in the workplace Nonbinary people face even more discrimination than most LGBTQ+ people. Harris leads on most issues, including abortion, health care, and election integrity. However, the strongest lead she has is on transgender rights. The question about who voters trust more on abortion, health care, and climate change yielded similar responses. When it came to taxes and guns, respondents were evenly divided, and respondents said they trusted Trump more on the economy, Israel/Gaza, and immigration.Republicans have spent the last four years stirring up hatred and fear regarding trans Americans, targeting them with bans on gender-affirming care, bathroom bills, and sports bans at the state and federal levels. However, that tactic may hurt Trump more than help him. Harris holds the lead among most groups when it comes to trust on trans equality issues. She is ahead by 10 points among men and 21 points among women. Among voters aged 65 and older, she leads by 21 points, and among voters under 35 she leads by 27 points. Even among Independents and swing state voters, Harris is ahead by 19 points and 10 points, respectively. Republican voters and other conservative-leaning demographics like white evangelicals were the only groups to say they trust Trump more on trans equality issues.Trump has repeatedly launched anti-trans attacks against Harris. He has falsely claimed on several occasions that teachers are performing sex change surgeries on children and sending them home as another gender. Trump has also criticized her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), for making the state a sanctuary for transgender individuals escaping anti-trans laws in other states. On Fox News, Trump said Walz is very heavy into transgender. Anything transgender he thinks is great, and hes not where the country is on anything.Trump is vehemently anti-trans, saying he would put in place a total ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth and national bathroom restrictions for trans students. In his Agenda 47, in the section President Trumps Plan to Protect Children From Left-Wing Gender Insanity, Trump says he would ask Congress to pass a bill establishing that the only genders recognized by the United States government are male and female and they are assigned at birth. Also in Agenda 47, Trump said he would pass a federal law banning child sexual mutilation, though gender-affirming surgeries are almost never performed on minors. He also says that he will ask Congress to permanently stop federal taxpayer dollars from being used to promote or pay for these procedures.Further, in Agenda 47, his Plan to Save American Education and Give Power Back to Parents would include a law that keeps men out of womens sports. The new poll shows that this extremist fear-mongering and lies about trans American does not seem to be having the desired effect. School board votes to allow discrimination against trans students
A school board in Wisconsin voted to remove gender identity from its anti-discrimination policy on Monday, leaving trans and nonbinary students open to discrimination and harassment punishment. The Muskego-Norway School Board updated its discrimination policy to remove gender identity from the list of protected categories while leaving the ban on sexual orientation discrimination in place. The policy previously said, The Board does not discriminate on the basis of sex (including sexual orientation or gender identity), in its education programs or activities. Related Lesbian firefighter may get $1.3 million for enduring 21 years of shocking harassment Her colleagues swore at her, injured her, and then urinated on her belongings. The board initially considered removing bothsexual orientation and gender identity from the policy. Instead, School board president Terri Boyer proposed removing gender identity from the policy to remain consistent with Wisconsin state law. State law bans discrimination based on sexual orientation in several areas, including employment and housing, but not discrimination based on gender identity. Still, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) encourages schools to include gender identity or expression in their anti-discrimination policies to create safe and supportive environments for LGBTQ+ students.Neither Boyer nor district officials responded to media inquiries from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about why a school would strip protections away from students. Parents felt that the school was not being supportive of LGBTQ+ students, especially when trans students across the country have faced hostile legislation. Earlier this month, LGBTQ+ advocacy groups filed a federal complaint against the nearby Kettle Moraine School District, citing Title IX violations for similar policy changes. Far-right extremist group Moms for Liberty is behind many of these changes. Moms for Liberty recently sued theBiden administration over its updated Title IX regulations, which expanded Title IXs ban on discrimination based on sex to include gender identity. As a result of the lawsuit, a temporary injunction has been placedthat blocks the Department of Education from enforcing the new regulations in schools where the children of Moms for Liberty members are enrolled.Suzanne Eckes, an education law professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,said that trans kids must still be protected. Whether they kick it out of their policy or not, they still need to follow the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals decision. She was referring to a 2017 decision from the appeals court that found in favor of a trans student who was misgendered in school and forced to use the wrong bathroom, ruling that Title IXs protections in education extend to trans students.Abigail Swetz, executive director of Fair Wisconsin, one of the LGBTQ+ advocacy groups involved in the federal complaint against Kettle Moraine, said that both Fair Wisconsin and GSAFE, another LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, are currently gathering information to decide on the best course of action, which may involve filing additional complaints. This is why it is so important that we learn of votes like the one taken by the Muskego-Norway school board, Swetz said.Recently, an English teacher at a Wisconsin public school sued his former school after his contract was not renewed because he repeatedly misgendered students. He then said that being forced to use the trans students pronouns violated his religious beliefs.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Trump judge rules for Catholic employers who want right to discriminate based on abortion & IVF
A North Dakota judge sided with the Catholic Diocese of Bismarck and a Catholic employers association, successfully blocking parts of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) related to anti-discrimination regulations related to abortion, fertility treatments, and LGBTQ workers.U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Traynor, a Trump appointee, criticized the regulations as clearly anti-religion, following arguments heard in federal court in Bismarck the previous week. Related HRC blames anti-LGBTQ+ politicians for national rise in hate crimes Hate crimes against us are not yet showing signs of subsiding, the Human Rights Campaign noted despite greater acceptance of queer people generally. Time and again the First Amendment rights of American citizens has been the subject of litigation (in) federal court, he wrote in a footnote included in theorder.Organizations must continually sue to keep the federal government from infringing on basic and well-settled rights to freedom of religion. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The case challenges provisions in two recent EEOC documents: a rule enforcing the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act and non-binding guidance on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits workplace discrimination. The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2022, says that workplaces must make accommodations for pregnant and postpartum mothers. However, the EEOCs rule extends protections to those seeking abortions or fertility treatments, which the plaintiffs argue was not Congress intent. The Catholic employees association says that the rule violates their First Amendment rights since the Catholic Church opposes abortion and in-vitro fertilization and accommodations should not be extended to employees experiencing either. The rule lacks a blanket exemption for religious employers, and the EEOC says religious exemption claims will be handled case by case. Were living in fear that well go through thousands of enforcement actions, said Andrew Nussbaum, an attorney for the plaintiffs. In April, the EEOC said that harassment based on reproductive health care decisions including abortion, fertility treatments, and contraception, could now be considered sex discrimination under Title VII.This also conflicts with the plaintiffs beliefs, as the Catholic Church opposes abortion, artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, gender ideology, transgender affirmation, and improper access to single-sex spaces, Traynor noted, quoting the complaint.Laura Bakst, an attorney representing the EEOC, said the rule allows the federal agency to decide cases with full context the nature of the employer and nature of the issue. Chris Geidner, who a journalist who focuses on law and the former legal editor at Buzzfeed News, called the decision an extreme ruling that, if upheld by a higher court, could have dramatic consequences. He pointed out that the injunction is open-ended, includes for-profit businesses that say theyre Catholic and agree with the CBAs positions, and is in its potential effect nationwide in scope.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Trans candidate Vivian Smotherman was attacked by Libs of TikTok. Shes fighting back by winning.
Vivian Smotherman, a former hog farmer, out trans woman, Navy veteran, and educator with a career in the oil industry behind her and a brand-new double degree in history and anthropology just added to her resume is running for the state Senate from her district in Southwestern Colorado. The married grandmother of three lives in Durango with her wife Joanna whom she met on the apps and says she brings diverse, real-world experience to a race that was uncontested before she jumped in earlier this year.We caught up with the sunny and ever-engaging candidate, 54, on the campaign trail early in the morning at an outdoor market in Aurora, where she was in search of breakfast and a coffee. She was, she said, doing amazing.LGBTQ+ Nation: Last week, you were the subject of an email distributed by the Colorado GOP that deadnamed you and quoted from online scowl Chaya Raichik of Libs of TikTok that youre a man pretending to be a woman and mentally ill. What was your reaction? Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Vivian Smotherman: We laughed. The insanity of the things that they spit out! There was actually another letter that came out today against me, and now Im trying to kidnap children and chemically castrate them. The evil that I apparently am capable of is unrivaled. Are you going to sue? Whats your recourse in a political campaign? My opponent is a decent human being, and he apologized to me, and at this point he has all but alienated himself from his own party because hes not as insane and crazy as they are, and they have disowned him. So I think thats enough. Our campaign is doing fantastic, and were confident that were going to come out on top of this thing, and letters like that, emails, and the spewing of lies and hate, it just helps us, and it hurts them.Kamala Harris has described both reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ rights as among a group of fundamental freedoms that shell fight to protect as president. Colorado is a blue state with a gay governor, but its also largely rural, and it has Lauren Boebert skulking around. What kind of pressures are the LGBTQ+ and trans communities facing in Colorado, and what can be done to address them?I think we face an incredible amount of pressure. We know the nightclub shooting in Colorado Springs a few years back, and battles are always erupting where the extreme right are trying to make a statement. But the acceptance of the LGBT community has been going on in Colorado since I first came here in the 70s. Its a very welcoming state. Its a very friendly, warm state. And the people that are spreading this stuff, theyre a minority, which is why were so blue. The GOP is less than 25% of the voting population here in Colorado, but they like making noise. Lauren Boeberts current congressional district overlaps with the one that youre running in. Have you crossed paths with her, and what would you say if you did?I have not crossed paths with her once. She went to the other side of the state and she has completely abandoned my district and all of the bills, all of the legislation, all of the efforts she was making to help the people there. She just quit cold turkey and started campaigning elsewhere. Thats just another example of what a poor leader she is, because its all about her.Colorado ranks among the top states for book bans, according to an American Library Association report in 2023. 80% of those bans across the country have been instigated by national groups like Moms for Liberty, who provide angry moms with cut-and-paste complaints about the same titles in school districts in every state. Have you interacted with these women, and how would you describe their effect on civil discourse? Their effect is horrible. The letter that we started this conversation talking about, it appears that that was actually written by I think her name was Darcy or Marcy from Moms for Liberty, so it is closely tied to that group. About a year ago, they were involved with a group that came to my town, Durango, and tried to bring in a racist charter school, and our community shut them down cold. And then they went to the legislature, and they tried to make rules with the State Board of Education that the community was not allowed to keep them out. That also failed. So yes, there is some book banning in Colorado. It is, for the most part, restricted to extreme MAGA areas. How do you define a racist charter school? They come in and they talk to your parents, and they say, Were a fantastic school. We have these fantastic scores and results. And you look at them, and you say, Well, your student body, theyre entirely white and theyre entirely upper middle class. Youre not letting in any diversity into your student body. Thats a racist school. The fact that they wont let in, especially in our neck of the woods, Indigenous people or ethnic and culturally diverse people they wont let them wear their hair the way the culture does, or dress the way the culture does, thats what I mean by a racist charter school. They take deliberate steps to make sure that only a certain demographic is allowed in.Initiative 89 on the Colorado ballot this fall will change the Colorado Constitution to recognize a womans right to an abortion. What do you predict the votes going to be?I think its going to be overwhelmingly positive. I wouldnt be surprised if we hit 70 or 80% for that. This state is very into protecting women and womens rights. We have it already on the books that abortions are legal. We also have it in the books that a red state or any other state trying to find out why a woman came to Colorado, we dont share that information. Thats none of their business. You have a lot of events to attend this week, including the State Legislative BBQ sponsored by the Pueblo Chamber of Commerce this Friday. You must go to a lot of functions where theres food, like BBQs and county fairs. Whats your strategy? Do you avoid eating, do you eat beforehand, or do you just load up on the calories? No, I eat very little, which is strange coming from a larger woman like myself (laughing). But once Im around people and were in that environment and theres excitement going on and theres conversations, theres just smiles and happiness. The last thing I think about is eating.Whats your favorite county fair dish or snack?Oh, oh, well, I love the Navajo tacos. Whats a Navajo taco? How do I describe it? Fried bread? Thats the biggest difference, is its served on fried bread. Its sloppy, its yummy, its delicious. And Ill eat those every chance I get.On Saturday, theres a Pride festival in the town of Alamosa, which is the home of your Republican opponent. Whats the difference between a small-town Pride event and one in San Francisco or New York? And what does it represent for the people who live there? This will be my third or fourth Pride festival this summer. The first one we did was 300 people, and it was amazing, because that town was in a very red county, and this was their first Pride ever. And I was very honored that I was the keynote speaker. And when I speak at Pride events, its non-political. Its simply about relating stories of my own personal experience and that being transgender is not a curse. It can be a wonderful thing. It can be a gift. You can really thrive as a transgender person. I say, listen, I know it can seem rough at times.I transitioned in probably the hardest setting you could ever imagine transitioning. I was an oil field worker in the Gulf of Mexico, offshore, and thats where I came out and said, Hey, Im not going to be a him anymore. Im accepting who I am, and Im going to be a her.And you know what? All of those Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi all of those extreme Southern men, they were wonderful. They accepted it. They took it. They knew me for who I was, and they respected me for who I was, and they were unbelievably supportive. And these are oil field workers, you know? They take hate with their breakfast every morning. Theyre really good at it. But thats what Ive given in my Pride talks, is that message that says, When youre yourself and people respect you, thats all that matters, and you can be whoever you want to be. Just be true. When I finished one speech and I stepped off the stage and there was a line of people wanting to talk to me, wanting to thank me for the words, for the inspiration. And what was really touching is there were two bears that were waiting in line, and they were in a red county thats always been red. I dont think either one of them were out of the closet, which broke my heart, but they were so warm and came up to me and thanked me and said, Hey, you know, you really made a difference with those words. So word is getting out. People are responding to me just beautifully. They love the enthusiasm, they love the honesty, they love the integrity, and they love the work ethic. It sounds like another campaign right now. You know, when you put in the effort, and people recognize it, people respect it, and thats what its about. And to serve, to be a senator, or, you know, even a president, its about doing the work. Its about getting out there and exhausting yourself for the people that youre trying to serve.Education is a big part of your platform. You write, Education is the greatest gift society can bestow upon its children, but it needs to serve the children, not the administrators trying for better jobs, and certainly not the corporations looking for a compliant labor force. Describe how the education system is complicit in producing a compliant labor force. What Ive seen in our country, literally since George Bush, Jr got in and he did his No Child Left Behind, the focus of education has really shifted from a balanced education that had arts and sciences and had humanities, to now they are continually deemphasizing and removing those requirements and constantly increasing the math requirements and the science requirements. Those are all done because thats what you want your workers to be good at. Civics and humanities classes teach people to really think objectively, and by getting rid of those, theyre creating workers. Theyre creating citizens that do not know how to think, that only know how to fill in the blank answer to the problem, and its just very rote work. But life is so much more than that. Life is about art. Life is about expression. Life is about humanities, reading, history, all of these things. We dont have to train kids simply to get jobs. You went back to college two years ago for a history and anthropology degree. What did you concentrate on in your majors? Trans issues. I did some amazing research for my anthropology senior seminar where I was exploring how did I word it? The ability of trans people to code switch. Transgender people, they use linguistics. People use code switching as a term that says, you know, if youre bilingual and you go into a situation, you can go back and forth in that conversation seamlessly. So my research was looking at how transgender people have that ability.I can go into a group of men, and suddenly I can speak man with them, because I grew up doing that. I can also go into a group of women and feel just as comfortable and speak just as fluently as a woman would. That gives a trans person an enormous amount of power and influence in any social situation, because they can react appropriately depending on whos around them, and thats something that most people cannot do.And then, for my history research, I was looking at trans people throughout history, like Catalina de Erauso, who was a 16th-century Basque noblewoman. She came from a good family and escaped a convent when she was 15 turned her nuns habit into mens clothing, and spent the rest of her life doing amazing adventures all around the New World. She was killing, she was gambling, she was fighting, all of this as a man, and eventually she got discovered, because they arrested her and tried to execute her. And she said, No, no, wait. Im really a female. After that, she managed to get back to Spain, where she appealed to the King, who gave her a military pension that normally would only go to a man because of her service. And then she went to the Pope in Rome, who gave her dispensation to continue living the rest of her life as a man. This was over 500 years ago, and you have a very successful trans person.Would you support mandatory national service for young people in the military, or some other form of public service of their choosing? No, I dont believe so. I dont see any reason for that in our society right now.Whats the single most important thing the world should do to address climate change?Education. Lets educate everybody on the dangers that climate change poses to our planet. As long as were bickering and fighting and avoiding the issue out of ignorance, were never going to get anymore. Predictions!I think this is going to be an amazing election cycle. We were terrified as centrists and moderates and progressives of what a second Trump term would mean, and as much as we all love and respect Joe Biden, we were getting fearful that it wasnt going to be enough. Then obviously Kamala came out, and the energy changed, the motivation changed everybody got so excited. Theres so much goodness in the air surrounding her. Theres more hope. Theres more possibilities with her as a candidate.Listen, we have to root out the cancer that is MAGA, and I think its just going to be a landslide come November.Whats the thing youre most looking forward to if youre elected to represent the constituents of Colorado Senate District 6?Six months ago, I would not have thought I was going to be in this business. Ill be honest with you, it just came out of the blue. But I did it because I see the things around my district that need addressing, problems that need solving, and I looked in the mirror and I said, You know what? I have a career of solving problems. Thats what Ive done my entire life and we can make a difference. Im just going to try to solve the problems. Also, maybe just getting a license plate that says senator on it. And I dont even know if thats a thing, but if it is, thats what I want.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Everything we know about Austin Wolf's arrest, court date & what happens next (updated)
Update 9/25/24: Austin Wolfs first hearing in his federal criminal case has been delayed once again.A federal court in the Southern District of New York has granted another 30-day continuance, moving the deadline for a preliminary hearing or indictment to October 28. Magistrate Judge Katharine H. Parker approved the extension at the request of both parties, as discussions for a potential plea deal continue. Wolf, whose legal name is Justin Heath Smith, was arrested in June on federal child pornography charges and remains in custody. In the latest filing, Assistant U.S. Attorney Getzel Berger noted that both the defense and prosecution are continuing negotiations but do not expect to reach a resolution before the previous Friday deadline. Defense attorneys Michael Baldassare and Thomas Andrykovitz consented to the extension. Berger emphasized that the continuance serves the interests of justice and outweighs the publics and defendants right to a speedy trial.Update 8/27/24: Wolfs court date for his preliminary hearing has been moved once more and will now take place on September 27, 2024. Both sides continue to negotiate a disposition of the case. The delay indicates that both parties are still working on a plea deal.Update 7/20/24: A preliminary hearing for Austin Wolf, previously set for late July, has been rescheduled. The Southern District of New York filed a 30-day continuance which was agreed to by both the defense and prosecution and presented to Magistrate Judge Tarnofsky who approved it. The new date has been set for August 28, 2024, though this is likely a sign that the defense and prosecution are working on a plea deal. It is worth noting that the vast majority of federal cases never go to trial and are pled out.Justin Heath Smith, the 42-year-old adult content creator known as Austin Wolf, is being held in detention in Brooklyn after a judge ruled he was a danger to the public and a flight risk. Smith faces federal child pornography charges and has been accused of sending and receiving hundreds of videos of child pornography, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorneys Office in the Southern District of New York.Court documents from the Southern District of New York allege that Wolf used the messaging app Telegram to share videos with another individual, who prosecutors say was an undercover FBI agent. A search conducted in April at Wolfs Manhattan apartment uncovered an SD card containing hundreds of illegal videos, according to prosecutors. The videos reportedly depict minors, including prepubescent children and infants, in sexually explicit situations. The latest on Austin Wolfs arrest The Advocate contacted the U.S. Attorneys Office in the Southern District of New York, however a spokesperson declined to comment. On Monday, attorney Thomas H. Andrykovitz, who represents Justin Smith / Austin Wolf, told The Advocate that his client is being held in terrible conditions. The governments press release contains nothing but unproven and untested allegations against a man that is presumed innocent. Justin is thankful for the incredible support he is receiving from his friends and supporters, Andrykovitz said. He is presently detained at [Metropolitan Detention Center]. It is well documented in judicial decision after judicial decision that the conditions of confinement at MDC are inhumane. Mr. Smiths conditions are no different. The staff at MDC have already failed to provide him with his basic medications.Benjamin OCone, a spokesperson from the Office of Public Affairs at the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP), confirmed to The Advocate that Smith is in federal custody at MDC but would not comment on Andrykovitz' specific allegations "for privacy, safety, and security reasons." O'Cone added that the federal prison system provides essential medical, dental, and mental health services to all inmates and has an administrative remedy program for addressing inmate concerns. What's next for Austin Wolf's criminal caseIf convicted, Wolf faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum sentence of 20 years. Wolf made his initial appearance before a judge on Friday, June 28, who determined that detention was necessary due to the risk of flight and the potential danger he poses. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 29.How the porn industry is responding to the newsWolf's arrest and the serious charges against him have sent shockwaves through the adult entertainment industry, where Wolf is well-known and has a substantial fan base. As the legal proceedings unfold, the community remains divided, with some expressing continued support and others grappling with the disturbing nature of the allegations. Here is how the members of his industry have responded to the news. (@) Men.com is an adult film studio that exclusively signed Wolf as a model, but the site parted ways with the porn star immediately following his arrest. I reluctantly support aJewishstate because of antisemitisms long & ugly history
Because theJewishpeople have never been truly safe in any nation for the long term, I reluctantly accept and support the need for aJewishhomeland.I would have much preferred to have seen the creation of aJewishstate following World War II carved out from lands in eastern Germany through western Poland. However, that boat has since sailed on an ocean of fallen tears. The fact is that both Palestinians andJewsare indigenous to what we call the Middle East, andJewsexisted there when the area was known as the land of Canaan. Palestinians andJewsare distant cousins. Yes, it is also true that mostJewswho reside in what today is called Israel arrived during the late 19th and 20thcenturies. Related Israels shocking attack on Lebanon is setting itself up for long-term failure Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu oversaw a plan to sabotage pagers and walkie-talkies in Lebanon but it could blow up in his face. Today,23countries have declared Islam the state religion; there arethreeHindu majority countries; infourcountries Buddhism is the official religion;15nations have declared a form of Christianity as their official religion; and157countries and territories are majority Christian. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today How Christian History has contributed to Middle Eastern conflictsI recently led a discussion with a group of progressive Christians on the history and current conflicts between Palestinians andJewsin the Middle East, the very issue that has sparked massive demonstrations on campuses and communities worldwide.Following introductions and the workshop agenda, I opened with a critical question, which I asked them first to consider alone, and then to pair with a partner to discuss. When I completed the question, I heard audible gasps and looks of disbelief and even of shock. The two-part question was:Has any part of the overall history of Christianity affected current events in the Middle East?If so, how? If not, why not? While it took a few minutes for some of the participants to absorb the question, they eventually connected with one another. After approximately 10 minutes, we had a larger group discussion about what came up for them. After some reluctance, some acknowledged with a sense of surprise rather than of objection: Im still in utter shock. I never thought about this question, one said. Another added, This is not the direction I thought we would be going in this workshop.A third remembered a slide from a PowerPoint presentation I sent to the participants two days prior to the workshop of a condensed history of the Middle East: I think I understand. It began the first time early Christians accusedJewsof killing Jesus.I followed with additional questions: WouldJewsrequire a state if Christian countries had welcomed them as trusted neighbors and as contributing participants to the cultural tapestry of the countries in which they inhabited, especially if they had unrestricted access to travel to and in the Holy Lands? And then I asked, If Christians had welcomedJews, would the Christian Cross have ultimately been chiseled into the Nazi Swastika? In other words, without two millennia of Christian persecution, could we have avoided the Holocaust and the desperate need for aJewishhomeland? The final question I asked them to discuss was, How have Christian countries impacted the development of the state of Israel, the displacement of Palestinians, and the continuing tensions between the peoples of the area?Antisemitism: A condensed (and unfortunately long) historical timelineFormerPresident Donald Trumpgave a campaign speech Thursday, September 19, purportedly on the topic of antisemitism.During his speech, Trump lecturedJewsthat they must vote for him in the upcoming November presidential sweepstakes, and if they do not, that theJewishpeople would be partially to blame for his defeat. Trump repeated his perennial warning that the Democrats hold a curse overJewishvoters.Trump said if he loses the race: Blame theJews.Throughout millennia, strong leaders have blamedJewsfor causing the problems of humanity. They have stereotyped and accusedJewsof many crimes, including: Killers of GodIn service of / fathered by the DevilCatholic host desecratorsPoisoners of drinking wellsTransmitters of diseasesUsurers (people who make loans at unreasonably high rates)Ritual murderers & abusers of Christian childrenPeople of immature / inadequate religious consciousnessForced circumcisers onto non-JewsProselytizers of JudaismClannishAlien raceWanderers / statelessFreedom-killing CommunistsSuper CapitalistsSexually perverseOversexed or sexually frigid femalesLecherous males preying on Christian womenFeminized and non-athletic malesControllers of world economic systemsExaggerators of the extent of anti-JewishoppressionControllers of the mediaFinancially cheap cheatersExploiters of the oppressedHolders of dual / multiple loyaltiesGreedy for wealthSo, let us go back millennia through a condensed timeline to find out where these tropes developed and extended to current eras. I could go back further, but I will begin in ancient Egypt:Several plagues fell upon ancient Egypt, so Blame theJews. Under ancient Greek rule, since they will not assimilate to our ways, they must die and for their own death, Blame theJews.Greco-Roman writers accusedJewswho adhered to their religious beliefs as bigots fighting in defense of circumcision and a pigless diet, so lets Blame theJews.Under ancient Roman rule and the murder of Jesus of Nazareth, early Christian writers declared for Jesuss death, Blame theJews. During the split between Judaism and Christianity during the first century of the common era,Jewswho would not convert were depicted as evil, rebels, and heretics against God, and eventually murdered so, Blame theJews.Money lending (forbidden to Christians) fell toJews, who were seen as cunning, cheap, and miserly thieves and in the service of the landed classes so, Blame theJews.Pope Urban II who called and funded the First Crusade in 1095 argued, Let us first avenge ourselves on them [theJews] and exterminate them from among the nations so that the name of Israel will no longer be remembered, or let them adopt our faith. In other words, lets Blame theJews. In 1144, the beginning of the so-called Blood Libel in England, when Christians accusedJewsof sleighing William of Norwich, a Christian male child, to use his blood in the making of their sacredJewishmatzos, resulting in Christians murderingJews. So, lets Blame theJews.Powerful leaders evictedJewsfrom several European nations during the Middle Ages, and in Germany, they were forced to wear a pointed hat to distinguish them from Christians so that others could Blame theJews. The Fourth Lateran Council of the Church orderedJewsto wear distinctive yellow badges in 1215 choosing yellow because it symbolized racial disgrace to help Blame theJews. Pope Gregory IX ordered all copies of theJewishholy book, theTalmud, confiscated in 1239, so lets Blame theJews.King Edward I, in 1290, issued an edict expelling allJewsfrom England, which remained in force until 1657, andJewswere expelled from France in 1182 & 1400, so lets Blame theJews. From 1348 to 1354, masses connected with the myth thatJewswere baby killers,Jewswere unjustly blamed for bringing on the Bubonic Plague by poisoning drinking wells, killing nearly one-third of the entire European population into Asia. Even though ticks had spread the disease through rats, nonetheless, masses decided, lets Blame theJews. Spanish Christian theologians in 1391 devised the doctrine ofLimpieza de Sangre(purity of the blood) whereby BaptizedJewsremainedJewishin the view of the Church, and therefore, a danger to society. BaptizedJewswere forbidden to practice medicine, surgery, or pharmacy because it was thought thatJewswere always ready to murder Christians, so lets Blame theJews.King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella during the Spanish Inquisition drove the lastJewsfrom Spain and Portugal who had not already been murdered sinceJewswere no longer needed for the economic roles they once filled, so lets Blame theJews. The Protestant Reformation in the 16thcentury resulted in a schism in Christianity. Catholic and Protestant leaders, however, agreed on one issue: the evilness of theJews. So lets Blame theJews. In 1526, Protestant reformer Martin Luther published a book called,On theJewsand Their Lies. Some have referred to this as the first work of modern anti-Semitism, so lets Blame theJews. For example: Luther wrote, First, their synagogues should be set on fire.He said Jewishprayer books should be destroyed and rabbis forbidden to preach. The homes ofJewsshould likewise be smashed and destroyed and their residents put under one roof or in a stable like gypsies, to teach them they are not master in our land. He effectively said, Blame the Jews. The 18th-century French philosopher Voltaire asserted, TheJewsare nothing more than an ignorant, barbarian people, who combine the foulest greed with a terrible superstition and an uncompromising hatred of all the peoples who tolerate them and at whose cost they even enrich themselves.[T]heJewsare cowardly and lecherous, greedy, and miserly, so lets Blame theJews. In many European countries, Christian leaders often forcedJewsto reside in designated, often overcrowded areas. Bishops often prohibitedJewsfrom living among Christians. These areas would come to be called Ghettos, so lets Blame theJews. The largest European ghetto was in Imperial Russia where the majority of RussianJewswere forced to live between 1835 and 1917. Called The Pale of Settlement, it extended from the Crimea to the Baltic Sea, so lets Blame theJews.During the United States Civil War in 1862, Major General Ulysses S. Grant unfairly accusedJewsof plotting to illegally engage in the cotton trade, and ordered allJewsexpelled from the states of Tennessee, Mississippi, and Kentucky, then under the control of the Union Army forces an action reminiscent of European forced expulsions ofJews. So again, lets Blame theJews. Wilhelm Marr, a Hamburg, Germany anarchist and writer, coined the term anti-Semitism in his 1879 pamphlet, The Victory of Judaism over Germanism. He hatedJews, and he warned of the imminent finalJewishvictory to conquer and enslave the Western world so basically, lets Blame theJews.Francis Galton, a cousin of Charles Darwin, coined the term eugenics in 1883 from the Greek, well born or good origins or breeding. Galton championed the science of improving the qualities of a race by controlling human breeding, claiming that TheJewsare specialized for a parasitical existence upon other nations, so lets Blame theJews.Phrenology the study of the shape & size of the human skull, based on the belief that they indicate human mental facilities and moral character becomes a stream within the eugenics movement. Some phrenology advocates assert that a section of the Jewishskull and brain are abnormally developed, indicating thatJewsare highly concerned withmoney and finances. This, they assert, has developed as an evolutionary process over time. As late as 2014, Nicholas Wade in his book,A Troublesome Inheritance argued thatJewspossess an evolutionary genetic adaptation to capitalism the same way that Tibetans who live at high altitudes possess an evolutionary genetic adaptation to extreme environments, so lets Blame theJews. Frederick Nietzsche, a leading European philosopher, in 1887 published hisThe Genealogy of Morals, in which he wrote: It was theJewwho, with frightening consistency, dared to invert the aristocratic value equations good/noble / powerful / beautiful / happy / favored-of-the-gods and maintained that only the poor, the powerless, are good; only the suffering, sick, and ugly, truly blessed.Jews, to Nietzsche, were a disease corrupting the nations, so lets Blame theJews.Originally appearing under the reign of Czar Nicholas II in Russia around 1895, an anonymous author who worked for the Russian secret police in Paris wrote a booklet,Protocols of the Learned Elders ofZion, to influence the policies of the Czar regardingJews. It contained the alleged minutes of a supposed conference organized by rabbis to plot howJewswould overtake and dominate the world. So lets Blame theJews.ThoughJewswere allowed very little control over the conditions surrounding their lives in many European countries, by the end of the 19thcentury c.e., the stereotype ofJewsas powerful with an interest in world domination persisted into the current era, led purportedly by the super-industrialist Rothchild family, so lets Blame theJews. Adolph Hitler said about Germanys loss in WWI: Blame theJews.Hitler asserted that he had been influenced by the theology of Paul in the Christian Bible, and by the works of Martin Luther, as well as many Christian theologians of his time regarding the evilness and inferiority of theJews. In his 1925Mein Kampf, Adolph Hitler wrote, Today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against theJew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord, so lets Blame theJews.Henry Ford, the U.S. automotive pioneer argued thatJewscontrolled world finance. He had theProtocolstranslated into English in 1927 and published it in his newspaper,The Dearborn(Michigan) Independent, thereby introducing it to a large U.S. audience. Adolph Hitler bestowed on Henry Ford the highest award given to a non-German. Following WWII at the Nuremberg Trials, Baldur von Shirach, Hitlers leader of Hitler Youth, stated that Hitler had become Jew-wise by reading Henry Fords own writings about theJews, so lets all Blame theJews. Father Charles E. Coughlin an Irish-Catholic priest, anti-Jewish, and anti-Communist used his radio broadcasts in the U.S. during the 1930s to warn that theJewswere out to destroy the U.S. economy. He defended Hitlers treatment of theJewsas warranted in the fight against Communism, so lets Blame theJews.Following the McCarthy era, xenophobes alleged that an underground Communist cabal had infiltrated the U.S. government, and since Communist was viewed as a Jewish influence, lets Blame theJews.According to the fraudulent Great Replacement Theory, white people are being replaced by a globalist conspiracy bringing in immigrants of color in primarily European-heritage nations like the United States and Great Britain. So we must Blame theJews because we wont allow Jewsto replace us.Well, as Spanish philosopher GeorgeSantayana, has warned, Those who cannot remember the past are destined to repeat it. Unfortunately, we keep forgetting, or more correctly, we fail to learn our past, and, therefore, we keep repeating it.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Chappell Roan claps back with two FIERY videos addressing her election views controversy
Its been a wild year for Chappell Roan, who had a meteoric rise to stardom after the release of her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. She went viral for kissing Olivia Rodrigo, shes basically taken over, and her stardom has brought on unwanted stalkers.Oh, and now shes under some major fire for not endorsing Kamala Harris which indicates we may have actually already seen the full rise and fall of this Midwest Princess (but they could never make us hate you!)If youve been out of the loop for the last few days or so, quick recap: Roan did an interview with The Guardian on September 20, where she said of the election, I have so many issues with our government in every way. There are so many things that I would want to change. So I dont feel pressured to endorse someone. Theres problems on both sides. I encourage people to use your critical thinking skills, use your vote vote small, vote for whats going on in your city. After the intense backlash, Roan took to her TikTok to address the controversy. Even though she turned off the comments, it caused so much continued conversation that she wound up posting another one as a final effort to get people off her back.See on InstagramI have encouraged people to use critical thinking skills, learn about what they're voting for, learn about who they're voting for, and ask questions, and it's being completely taken out of context, per usual, she said in the first video, stating that theres a nuance to what she says in interviews and that she thinks its important to question everything more than what face value provides. This is my third election in voting, and the world is changing so rapidly, and I want to be part of the generation that changes things for good, because we need it, she continued. If you come to my shows, if you read my full interviews, if you literally know anything about me and for what I stand for, you know that this is not lip service. This is not virtue signaling, that my actions have always paved the way for my project and the people who really know me. Actions speak louder than words, and actions speak louder than an endorsement. In clarifying what she said in the interview, she reiterated that the most important change she wanted from this years US election is trans rights, stating, They cannot have cis people making decisions for trans people. Period. She also confirmed she would not be voting for Trump, but made it clear, I will always question those in power and those making decisions over other people. And I will always stand up for whats right and what I believe in Im sorry you fell for the clickbait.@chappellroanIn the second video, a more visibly upset Roan addresses us, having just woken up to people just skewing it even more.Endorsing and voting are completely different, she said, a main focus of her message when it comes to celebrity endorsements. She once again addressed her issues with both sides of the spectrum and policies on both ends, saying, That's why I can't, like, put my entire name and my entire project behind one, because there is no way I can stand behind some of the left's completely transphobic and completely genocidal views You know what is right and wrong. F*ck Trump for f*cking real, but f*ck some of the sh*t that has gone down in the Democratic party that has failed people like me and you and more so Palestine and more so every marginalized community in the world. While she did admit she would vote for Kamala, she stressed that no one would make her feel bad for questioning the actions of the government or the internet. This is not me playing both sides, she said. This is me questioning both sides because this is what we have in front of us... Vote for who, in your mind, is the best option for what we have right now Im not picking the sides of what we have right now. Yes, ones obviously better than the other, but Jesus f**king Christ, I hope you dont settle for what we have and put your name behind someone that you dont fully, fully trust.@chappellroanIm done talking about it. If you dont get what im saying from this, its a lost cause. And im not forcing you to agree with me. This is my statement. Have a good dayNaturally, the response has continued to be mixed. Unhinged anti-LGBTQ+ Republican banned from Instagram for hate speech
Valentina Gomez, the failed GOP candidate for Missouri secretary of state who once set LGBTQ+ books on fire using a flamethrower for a campaign ad, has been removed from Instagram following multiple organizations reporting her posts, including GLAAD.Gomezs Instagram was full of messages supporting her primary campaign, which she lost in a stunning defeat in August. So dont be weak and gay. Stay f**king hard. She also lost her job with Nestle Purina after her numerous anti-LGBTQ+ stunts. In a video talking about her no longer working with the dog food company, she claimed, Today, I fired them. No amount of money, stock, or bullying will make me compromise my values. So I will never support a company that wants to empower and protect pedophiles and groomers in our schools and libraries.Gomez most recently posted on Instagram about Imane Khelif, an Olympic boxing champion who was the subject of online hate after anti-trans public figures incorrectly called her a trans woman. The post described Khelif as a man and called her the F-slur, which was flagged for breaking Metas community guidelines. GLAAD president and chief executive Sarah Kate Ellis said Instagrams unfortunate slow reaction to Gomezs hateful posts caused her to escalate her language and to post more.Hopefully, this latest action is a sign that Meta will prioritise enforcing its policies when it comes to disgusting lies, slurs and calls for violence against our community, Ellis said.Gomez lost her primary in August, finishing in sixth place. Marjorie Taylor Greene praised as quiet, shy & highly respected in Donald Trump speech
During a speech that was ostensibly about the economy, GOP candidate Donald Trump praised Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), saying that shes shy, quiet and really highly respected in Washington, despite her extremism especially on LGBTQ+ rights issues as well as reports of her being ostracized by both centrist and more conservative members of her party.During the speech, in which Trump rambled about immigration, air conditioning in California, and Oprah Winfreys love of key lime pie, while also repeating his past claim that Vice President Kamala Harris lied about a summer job she had in the 80s at McDonalds, Trump took a moment about 45 minutes into his speech to praise Greene, who had introduced him as a successful businessman that gave us the best four years of our life. Trump claims that Marjorie Taylor Greene is "really highly respected in Washington," which is one of his biggest whoppers ever pic.twitter.com/wO8PjgGm4N Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) September 24, 2024Greene has a long history of attacking LGBTQ+ rights. She tried to shut down Congress multiple times to keep the House from voting for the Equality Act, which would provide civil rights protections for LGBTQ+ people. She introduced a bill to ban gender-affirming care for trans minors and make such care more difficult to obtain for trans adults. She has an anti-trans sign outside her office that she originally put up because a Democrat hung a trans flag, which upset Greene. She hired a self-proclaimed ex-gay as an intern. She also voted against marriage equality, saying that marriage is between one man and one woman and thats how God created it.Greene is so extreme that more moderate members of her own party have called her out. Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD) accused her of engaging in a failing act of political theater when she tried to get Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) removed from the speakership earlier this year for not being conservative enough in her opinion. But that hasnt endeared her to the far-right either. Last year, Greene famously got kicked out of the House Freedom Caucus a group of far-right lawmakers for her repeated attacks on her colleagues. Shes not a member of the Freedom Caucus, and she shouldnt be in the future, then Freedom Caucus member Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) said at the time. She doesnt even get along with another extremist who was elected to the House the same year as she was and is a fellow supporter of the QAnon conspiracy theory, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO). Greene allegedly referred to the gentlewoman from Colorado as a wh**e behind her back and a b**ch to her face. No lie is beneath this nutcase, one person commented on Trumps claim that Greene is highly respected in Washington.Greene wasnt the only anti-LGBTQ+ extremist Trump praised yesterday. He also called Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban really a great leader and bragged about Orbans endorsement of his campaign.Trump is now touting Orban's endorsement. Hate preacher defends unhinged colleagues alleged wife-beating in shocking video
A notorious anti-LGBTQ+ Independent Fundamental Baptist (IFB) hate pastor has been caught on tape defending the domestic violence of a fellow hate-mongering preacher in a recently posted covert recording. In the video recording of a phone conversation between John Anderson the estranged son of Pastor Steven Anderson of Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona and Pastor Jonathan Shelley (a fellow anti-LGBTQ+ IFB leader), Shelley bends over backward to excuse John Andersons accusations his father beat his mother with an electrical cord countless times, slapped her hard across the face repeatedly, and left her bloodied on numerous occasions. Related Hate preacher says hed rather eat his own vomit than be gay in unhinged sermon He then pretended to eat his own vomit in front of his congregation to show how serious he was. In the call, John Anderson notes the hypocrisy and deceit his father has displayed, publicly denying accusations by him and his sibling (admitted Nazi Issac Anderson) that Steven Anderson punched his wife with a closed fist. I just want to know from your perspective, youre saying that you witnessed your dad with a closed fist punch your mom, and you saw that? No, I never said that. He slapped her, John says after detailing the electrical cord beatings and other violent abuse that both he, his siblings and his mother endured.I have spoken with your dad about some intimate details. Frankly speaking, he told me that he never closed-fist hit your mom.Screenshot/Twitter Hate Pastor Jonathan Shelley Shelley uses the distinction to justify Steven Andersons behavior as consensual discipline of a wife by her husband. That distinction, according to Shelley, justifies Steven Andersons public denials of his childrens allegations, and the alternative abuse itself.Heres the thing, John, Shelley says. Im not going to disqualify a pastor over domestic abuse because the Bible is silent on that.I asked him if he used physical discipline on your mom, Shelley continued, and he told me that whatever he had done between him and your mom was consensual, and that it was behind closed doors, you know, and that whatever his kids were aware of were an exaggeration of what happened.Shelley added that wife-beating in America that was legal for hundreds of years and exercised by many people regularly.John Anderson countered, Being gay is legal in America right now, and you dont think thats okay.In response to the audio recording post, Steven Anderson denied the allegations. Steven Anderson has responded to this video, saying :"just because I'm a pastor, it doesn't mean that people have the right to know everything that's going on between me and my wife behind the closed doors of our bedroom. It's inappropriate to discuss those things publicly, and Protestia (@Protestia) September 25, 2024Both Shelley and Steven Anderson preach that homosexuality is a perversion punishable by death. In 2021, Shelley asked his congregants, Are you sad when f*gs die? No. I think its great! I hope they all die! I would love it if every f*g would die right now.In another sermon, Shelley observed, If someone walks into a homo bar and shoots em all, shoots a bunch of homos and kills all of them, you know how many tears Id shed for that? Zero, he said, adding that he doesnt care how many of them die because they worship the devil. Steven Anderson has said we would rather eat his own vomit than be gay in one unhinged sermon. Like his enabler Shelley, violent hatred of gay people is a recurring theme in his theology and church leadership. Quoted one Christian commenter in reply to the audio recording post, Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife that your prayers be not hindered. It sounds like Stephen Anderson has an uncertain eternity.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

20 times 'Drag Race' queens painted like Trixie Mattel to, ahem, varying degrees of success
RuPaul Drag Race star Trixie Mattel's hyper-exaggerated makeup look is so iconic that many of her fellow Ru Girls have tried painting their faces to mimic hers.Mattel got her start in beauty school and then as an employee at Sephora before diving into drag. Since then, the comedy queen went on to be a break out star on the seventh season of Drag Race, eventually taking home the crown on All Stars season 3. Now, she's also a country music singer and has launched her own successful makeup line.In fact, her makeup is so recognizable and iconic yesterday that Kennedy Davenport who has had a long-standing feud with Mattel even joined the ranks of queens who have taken her look for a spin. In a newly released YouTube video, chaotic queen Mistress Isabelle Brooks painted Davenport's face in Mattel's unforgettable style while the two gossiped about what happened to cause the feud. "I was the one with the beef," Davenport explained. "My heart was broken. When I befriend somebody, I really take that to heart. I just felt, in the instances of filming [All Stars 3], not one time did she tell me she was reading me every chance she got. I really thought that we had created a bond that we weren't able to create during season 7." Trans woman had to get multiple surgeries after being shot. The shooter just got convicted.
In Washington, D.C., a man has been found guilty of aggravated assault while armed after shooting a trans woman he accused of stealing $80 from his pocket while she performed oral sex on him.A D.C. Superior Court jury found Jerry Tyree, 46, guilty of one count of aggravated assault while armed, one count of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, two counts of felony possession of a firearm, and one count of possession of liquid PCP. Related He killed a trans woman because he had to do it. Now hes going away for decades. Prosecutors didnt charge him with a bias crime due to a lack of evidence, but the impact on the trans community was still felt. I was relieved, for one thing, and kind of happy that justice was served,Kayla Fowler, the victim of the shooting, told the Washington Blade after the verdict came down. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Prosecution witnesses testified that Fowler and Tyree met at a well-known gathering place for female transgender sex workers on the afternoon of the assault. After negotiating a price for oral sex, the defendant and the victim walked together into a nearby apartment building, where the victim performed oral sex on the defendant, according to a statement released by the Office of the U.S. Attorney for D.C.The defendant then accused the victim of robbing him, and when she denied doing so, the defendant pulled out a small silver handgun and shot the victim directly in the penis before leaving the scene, the statement recounted. Police were called by a neighbor and the victim was transported to the hospital, where she underwent multiple surgeries. Tyree was arrested a month after the shooting in November 2023 for possession of the same handgun used in the assault, less than a mile from where he shot Fowler on a staircase at the apartment building. Several glass vials, including one partially filled with suspected PCP, were also found in Tyrees possession.Prosecutors at trial said ballistic and DNA evidence, including a sample of Tyrees semen found at the scene, proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Fowlers account of the crime was true.In testimony before the jury, Tyree argued that it was Fowler who pulled the gun and ended up shot accidentally after a struggle following Tyrees accusation that Fowler had reached into his pocket during the sex act and extracted $80.He said he took the gun from the scene before fleeing out of fear Fowler would chase and shoot him following the altercation. In questioning from the prosecution, Tyree was asked if he knew Fowler was a trans woman. He replied, Im not a homosexual. I dont mess with men.Fowler testified that Tyree had become angry after shed asked him to wear a condom when she performed oral sex on him. She said the defendant backed away from her, tore off the condom, and masturbated to ejaculation on the staircase landing where they had their sexual encounter.Tyree faces 10 to 30 years in prison for the assault and related gun and drug charges. Fowler has since moved to Baltimore. I left the area because it was harsh for me to live in the area after what happened to me. I was scared for my life, she told the Blade, adding, I had to undergo two major surgeries. I had to wear a colostomy bag for three and a half months to let me urinate.Speaking of the LGBTQ+ community and her fellow sex workers, Fowler said, I would like them to be aware of their surroundings. Dont trust everyone. Just be yourself and just be careful about what others may do to you because of the life we live.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

X suspends hateful users 99% less often than Twitter used to
The social media site X, owned by transphobic billionaire Elon Musk, just released its first transparency report since Musk took it over. The report shows that only 2,361 X accounts were suspended for hateful conduct this year, a 99.7% decrease from the number suspended in 2021, before Musk took it over in October 2022. The lack of moderation reflects Musks willingness to let hate speech flourish on the site, even as advertisers flee. Related Twitter just made it even harder for trans people to report online abuse This is far from the platforms first move against trans people since Elon Musk took the helm. The report, which looked at policy enforcement from January 2024 to June 2024, showed over 224 million reports of user policy violations. The reports resulted in over 5 million accounts being suspended. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today It is difficult to compare this to the companys previous transparency reports. The last Twitter report was a 50-page document that covered the last six months of 2021. During that time, Twitter said there were 11.6 million reports of accounts violating the sites user policies, 4.3 million of which had actions taken against them, and 1.3 million accounts that were suspended as a result. The current report on X is shorter than the previous one, at only 15 pages. Most illuminating is its data on actions X took against hateful conduct. Xs policies on hateful conduct state, You may not directly attack other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, caste, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease. Such attacks include referencing historic acts of violence to intimidate; spreading stereotypes, slurs, and dehumanizing language; inciting harassment or discrimination; and displaying hateful images. This year, X received nearly 67 million reports of hateful conduct. However, X only labeled or removed 4.9 million of the reported posts (about 7.3% of the total reported), and only suspended 2,361 accounts (roughly 0.0035% of the total reported). In other words, only 2,361 accounts were found to have violated the companys hateful conduct policies to such a degree that they warranted suspesion from the platform. The 2,361 suspended accounts represent a 99.7% decrease from the over 5 million that were suspended in 2021. This data reflects how the site has tolerated more hate speech and misinformation since Musks takeover. In April 2023, the site quietly removed a line in its Hateful Conduct policy that gave trans people additional protections against digital abuse. Additionally, in October 2023, the site rolled back its moderation policies against misgendering, deadnaming, and slur usage in favor of general categories like dehumanization, violent speech, and abuse and harassment. The report also suggests the vast majority of actions taken against Xs hateful conduct and harassment policies were conducted by humans. X also has a profit incentive for allowing hate speech to thrive on its platform. Although Musk has been steadily losing advertiser support on the site (something he has publicly encouraged), he nonetheless makes money directly from neo-Nazi hate speech and far-right X accounts like Libs of TikTok. Libs of TikTok is known for publicly shaming LGBTQ+ individuals and sending massive hate campaigns against them, which often result in bomb threats and mass public harassment against children, educators, health professionals, politicians and others.Musk also fired much of the trust and safety team on the site and made the sites API (a set of rules that allows software programs to communicate and exchange data with each other) harder to access for researchers, erecting barriers to data collection. This blocks researchers from reporting numbers that would illustrate the sites dwindling user count as people flee X for other platforms. The report also reveals that X has complied with more government takedown requests internationally than it did when it was known as Twitter. There were 72,000 across every country, with compliance rates ranging from 68% in Turkey and 80% in the European Union. The average rate is 70%, much higher than the rate in 2021, which was around 50%. Theodora Skeadas, a former member of Twitters public policy team, told WIRED, They might have enforced a certain amount of content. But the numbers might be understating the severity of impact because of reduced capacity for manual review. Skeadas, who also helped build Twitters Moderation Research Consortium, says that with fewer staff, automated systems might not be audited as regularly as they should. This is important, she says, for human rights defenders, journalists, women, protected demographics, race, ethnic, religious, minority groups. Those are the cases that generally receive special attention by public policy teams and teams that were ensuring safe spaces on the platform.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Pastors condemn Black GOP candidate for racist comments about Martin Luther King Jr.
Black pastors are condemning North Carolina gubernatorial candidate and Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R) for his prior statements against civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. However, white Evangelicals are still celebrating Robinson.Earlier this month, a CNN investigation revealed that Robinson had previously called himself a black Nazi on a porn site and also said that he would own slaves if he could. Of Martin Luther King Jr., he said Get that f**king commie bastard off the National Mall! Im not in the KKK. They dont let blacks join. If I was in the KKK I would have called him Martin Lucifer Koon! He also said King was worse than a maggot and a huckster. Related MAGA extremist Mark Robinson called himself Black Nazi & perv for trans porn In one post, he allegedly described peeping on women in the shower. In another, he allegedly called a Black civil rights leader Martin Lucifer Koon. Kings child, Martin Luther King III, condemned Robinsons comments, telling NBC News His praise for slavery, disparaging rhetoric, and grotesque characterization of my dad and his legacy are deeply worrisome for North Carolinians and all Americans who oppose racism and bigotry. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today King III said that he and his wife will be supporting Robinsons opponent, North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, as well as local candidates who will stand up for women, Black and Brown North Carolinians, and everyone else who Mark Robinson chooses to disparage.Bishop Sir Walter Mack of Union Baptist Church in Winston- Salem also alluded to Robinsons comments, saying, What we need to do is help people to understand what King stood for, and that was to unify people and to bring people together in the spirit of love, and that is the language and the method that we need to hold on to today. We wont glorify anyone or anything that comes against the work and the legacy of Dr. King. Its all about the love that he presented.Mycal Brickhouse, of Baptist Grove Church in Raleigh, said that Robinsons statements show a political leader who embraces a narrative of hatred and supremacy, creating more problems by casting a unifying leader as a threat. Instead of promoting polarizing and malicious views, we should learn from historys lessons, and remember the negative effects of devaluing others humanity to boost ones assumed superiority. Eric Vickers, pastor of Georgias Fairfield Baptist Church in Lithonia, said, Among the numerous repulsive and erroneous assertions, to be a Black man in America and disrespect the sacrificial labor of Dr. King and the army of nonviolent, civil rights soldiers, is an affront to his ancestry and the freedoms he enjoys. He will have reduced himself to a bigot in blackface and a mascot for Project 2025.At this point, for Mr. Robinson, the best way forward is the way out, Vickers added. It is clear that voting in this election is of great consequence and the church must be engaged and concerned about the kind of society we will inherit if we fail to participate. When former President Donald Trumpendorsed Robinson, he called Robinson Martin Luther King on steroids. This is despite the fact that Robinsononce calledKing a bad pastor and a communist and called the Black Civil Rights Movementa communist plot to subvert capitalism and to subvert free choice. Robinson has publicly stated that he will not be withdrawing his candidacy from the election, with the opportunity to formally remove himself from the ballot having passed last week. Stein, meanwhile, is up by 14 points according to recent polls by Elon University.White Evangelicals, meanwhile, are sticking with Robinson.I do not know whats true and whats not true, said Dwight Frazier, a church member at Central Baptist Church in Henderson, who attended a luncheon led by the American Renewal Project, a group that encourages Christian pastors and church members to enter into North Carolina politics. Everybody has something thats wrong in their past and does some things they wouldnt be proud of. I think he loves the Lord and I think hes trying to do the right thing. Hes still a good man, in my opinion. The American Renewal Projects founder and leader, David Lane, maintained that Robinson is brilliant. I dont know whats truth and untruth in terms of the allegations against him, but I dont regret all that we did, said Lane. He was fabulous. Its just that, from a biblical standpoint, Old and New Testament, man is born in sin.In addition to his racist comments, Robinson admitted to enjoying transgender porn. He has notoriously called for the arrest of trans bathroom users and the murder of LGBTQ+ individuals.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

30 HILARIOUS responses to Alex Jones CRYING like a baby because he has to liquidate his assets
(@) Right-wing conspiracy theorist and human scum Alex Jones is having a bad day, which means the internet is having a really good one!Yesterday, it was reported that Jones' Infowars media platform and its assets are set to be sold off piece by piece in auctions to pay the close to $1.5 billion dollars he owes to the families of the Sandy Hook victims, after he spent years peddling conspiracy theories about them, according to MSNBC.But Jones isn't going quietly into that good night. Instead, after a judge liquidated his personal assets in June, he went on his little Infowars show to sob about the injustice of having to pay for the damage he did to the families whose children were slain in a grizzly school shooting because he couldn't stop running his mouth calling the tragedy a "hoax" and making up vile lies about how the families were hired "crisis actors.""I'm not trying to be dramatic here, but it's been a hard fight, and these people hate our children," Jones cried because he wanted people to feel sorry for him and care about his children even though he had no empathy for the children who were killed. Of course, Jones never actually believed that Sandy Hook was faked; he even said in court that the shooting was "100% real," he just knew he could make money off of peddling the lie to his gullible followers. But now he has to pay up because you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. The clip of Jones throwing a tantrum like a giant baby is currently going viral on X (formerly Twitter), where it was shared by liberal podcaster @BrooklynDad_Defiant along with the relatable caption, "I was in a bad mood, but then I saw this clip of Sandy Hook truther Alex Jones crying because he's about to lose all of his shit, and I felt better instantly. Try it!" And the internet agreed! Sleazy GOPs fave alleged gay porn star linked to Republican Project 2025 doc
Corey DeAngelis, a prominent school choice advocate and vocal critic of LGBTQ+ rights in education, who was recently exposed for allegedly having a history in gay adult films under the name Seth Rose, leading to widespread accusations of hypocrisy, is also a contributor to the extreme Project 2025 agenda. The plan, spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation, seeks to institutionalize Trumpism should the Republican former president win a second term. The projects controversial blueprint includes a dangerous rollback of protections for LGBTQ+ students, alarming advocates and civil rights groups.Related: Right-wing anti-LGBTQ+ education activist exposed as former gay adult film actor: reportProject 2025 proposes eliminating the U.S. Department of Education, a move that would remove critical protections for marginalized students, including those who identify as queer or gender non-conforming. DeAngelis appears on page 27 of the document as a contributor from the American Federation for Children. Critics say the plan threatens to undermine the safety and inclusion of LGBTQ+ youth in schools across the country. GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis condemned DeAngeliss involvement in a statement to The Advocate. DeAngelis connections to the longtime anti-LGBTQ group Heritage Foundation and his co-authorship of Heritages fascist, dangerous blueprint Project 2025, are further proof that he is willing to sell out student safety to anti-LGBTQ extremists. Targeting any student makes every student and school less safe, Ellis said. The danger of Project 2025 is particularly concerning for LGBTQ+ students, who already face hostile environments in many schools. According to GLSENs 2021 National School Climate Survey, almost 82 percent of LGBTQ+ students reported feeling unsafe at school due to their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. The survey also revealed that 32 percent of LGBTQ+ students had missed school in the past month because they felt unsafe, highlighting the critical need for federal protections that Project 2025 seeks to dismantle.Data from GLSENs survey also shows that schools with Gay-Straight Alliances and LGBTQ+ inclusive curricula foster safer, more welcoming environments for students. LGBTQ+ students in these schools experience fewer incidents of harassment and are more likely to feel a sense of belonging. However, the rollback of federal protections proposed by Project 2025 would jeopardize these positive gains, further endangering vulnerable students.Related: Project 2025: A blueprint for the oppression of LGBTQ+ AmericansDeAngelis, affiliated with the Betsy DeVos-backed American Federation for Children, has come under increasing scrutiny since his alleged adult film history was revealed. DeVos is the controversial former Education Secretary in the Trump administration. The organization has scrubbed all references to him from its website and placed him on leave. This employee has been placed on leave as we look into the matter, and we will not be commenting further, a spokesperson for the group told The Advocate. The Cato Institute, where DeAngelis serves as an adjunct scholar, confirmed that his status with the organization remains unchanged, though the organization distanced itself from his outside affiliations. Adjunct scholars work with Cato on defined projects, however, outside of that work may align with other groups that do not adhere to our mission and values. We proudly continue to advocate for greater freedom for all, including gay rights and school choice, a Cato spokesperson told The Advocate.DeAngelis did not respond to multiple requests for comment, and his Stanford University email reply indicated that he was out of the office and on paternity leave. His silence on social media and in the press has been noteworthy. In a pointed post on X (formerly Twitter), American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, a frequent target of DeAngeliss rhetoric, quipped, Has anyone heard from Corey DeAngelis in the last few days? He normally tweets at me incessantlyhes been very silent. Hope hes ok. (@) Project 2025 calls for eliminating the Department of Education, which exists to help make sure every student, including LGBTQ students, receive a quality education in a safe environment. DeAngelis fraud on school districts across the country should be seen for what it is: an anti-LGBTQ attack, underwritten by the most extreme anti-LGBTQ groups. DeAngelis and Heritage have no business anywhere near Americas schools, students, and families, Ellis said.

Trans director Sydney Freeland is here to upend your ideas about Indigiqueer folks & make you cry
Writer and director Sydney Freeland's intersecting identities of being an Indigenous trans woman means that she's used to seeing negative stereotypes of her communities shown on screen, but as a filmmaker, she's been able to create movies with the kind of diverse representation she rarely sees.Freeland's latest feature Rez Ball, which she co-wrote with Reservation Dogs creator Sterlin Harjo, does just that by setting an underdog sports movie on a reservation and having their coach be an Indigenous queer woman. The new Netflix film, based on the book Canyon Dreams by Michael Powell and set on the Navajo Nation reservation, follows the high school basketball team, the Chuska Warriors, as they are reeling from the loss of their star player after he took his own life. Hometown hero Heather Hobbs (Jessica Matten) who made it big playing on the WNBA takes over as coach to whip the boys back into shape and take home a championship win with Jimmy Holiday (Kauchani Bratt) as her new team captain. It was important for Freeland to include a queer character in her film, but she didn't want that to be the main focus. "You don't want to do something for the sake of doing something, but the character of Heather Hobbs, it made sense for her, and she kind of presented herself on the page in a very organic manner and fashion," Freeland tells PRIDE. "You try to lean into this from a story forward first perspective, so that really kind of dictated all of the approaches."Although Heather's queer identity informed Matten's performance, she was glad that Rez Ball was more interested in the story of the boys coming together as a team than her character's backstory. "In order to normalize and humanize minority communities or the LGBTQ+ community even further, it's by kind of not shining a light and making that the emphasis of the plot line. She just is. So that in and of itself is normalizing that it should be normal," she tells PRIDE. "It's a very normal part of my upbringing as well, too, being surrounded by people in those communities that were just family and friends and that there wasn't necessarily a need for that to be the emphasis."The film focuses on telling an Indigenous story from an Indigenous perspective. It excels when it takes a familiar sports movie trope think Hoosiers or Friday Night Lights and puts a Native American spin on it, like when Heather has the players herd her grandmother's sheep on the reservation to teach them about teamwork.Freeland who grew up on a reservation herself says that when writing the script, she and her co-writer "didn't go in with a desire to reinvent the wheel," instead, they walked a well-trodden path but made it their own by choosing to have the coach be from the community instead of an outsider. "We didn't want to have the white savior character come in to teach these natives how to live and play basketball the right way," she explains. That decision, combined with hiring almost all Indigenous actors and filming mostly on the Navajo Nation's land, gives the film its distinctive flavor."There were all of these unintended positive consequences of that one simple decision to say, 'No, we want to have this be told from the inside out,'" Freeland says.Heather coaches the boys to play rez ball a style of basketball popular on reservations that prioritizes a fast tempo, aggressive play, and quick scoring. "We run fast, we shoot fast, and we don't ever stop," she says during the film. But that's not the only way Native American culture is brought into Rez Ball. The newly minted team captain, Billy, comes up with a plan for all of the players to learn Navajo so they can shout out plays during the game without the other team being any the wiser. Bratt was even inspired to begin learning about his own Indigenous heritage and language because of Jimmy's story and how everyone on the cast "reps their tribe so hard.""After this film, that was one of the things on my own I tried to do, and trying to learn my own language and strengthen my own identity within my own people," Bratt tells PRIDE. "And I think Jimmy sort of goes through a similar experience in the story where learning that language and strengthening that identity as an Indigenous man ultimately helps him be stronger in who he is, and that ultimately helps him rise to the challenge."While Freeland highlights the culture's beauty and how the community pulls together to support the team, she doesn't shy away from showing the struggles that are all too common on reservations. The issue of alcoholism is raised without much commentary or introspection, but that is the point. These problems become the backdrop to your life when many are caused by systemic injustices that aren't easily remedied. In Rez Ball, Freeland manages to strike a balance between authentic and nuanced depictions of what it's like to be Indigenous and live on a reservation while still making the emotions and struggles feel universal."I think one of the things that was so important to myself is we wanted to show all of the aspects and all of the facets of life back home on the reservation," she explain. "There's a lot of great things, there's a lot of not great things, there's a lot of trauma that people back home have experienced, but a lot of times we're portrayed as very stoic and serious and sort of monolithic, but native people are some of the happiest most hilarious people I know. But at the same time, we've been through a lot of shit, so for myself, it was really about just trying to embrace all of those different aspects and facets of the experience and not shy ways from it."Rez Ball premieres on Netflix on September 27, 2024. In the wake of criticism of her recent comments about the U.S. presidential election and her refusal to endorse a candidate, out pop star Chappell Roan says she will vote for Kamala Harris in November. On Wednesday, September 25, the 26-year-old Good Luck, Babe! singer posted a video on TikTok in which she confirmed that shes voting for f***ing Kamala, notably mispronouncing the vice presidents first name in a manner similar to former president Donald Trump and right-wing talking heads. Related George Takei slams Chappell Roan for saying both sides of the election are the same Chappell Roan is getting criticized for saying that both sides of the election have problems. The post comes after several days of backlash to comments Roan made in a September 20 profile in The Guardian. The singer told the U.K. outlet that she has many issues with the U.S. government and that she doesnt feel pressure to endorse a candidate. She also cited transgender rights as a key issue for her, insisting that They cannot have cis people making decisions for trans people, period. Many on social media, including out actor George Takei, accused Roan of both sidesing, i.e., falsely equating Republicans clearly anti-LGBTQ+ policies with what she and others may see as Democratic policies that fall short of their ideals.Roan had previously posted a TikTok video on Monday, September 23, responding to the criticism, arguing that her quotes had been taken out of context per usual. She reiterated her call for people to use critical thinking and question authority and question world leaders. If you come to my shows, if you read my full interviews, if you literally know anything about me and for what I stand for, you know that this is not lip service, this is not virtue signaling, that my actions have always paved the way for my project and the people who really know me.Actions speak louder than words, she continued, and actions speak louder than an endorsement. Roan did not dispute the Guardian quote as printed but claimed that a lot of people are just not reading it.So, hear it from my mouth if youre still wondering: No, Im not voting for Trump, and yes, I will always question those in power and those making decisions over other people, and I will stand up for whats right and what I believe in.In her September 24 post, a groggy and clearly frustrated Roan argued that people were continuing to skew her comments even more. Endorsing and voting are completely different, she argued. I dont agree with a lot of what is going on with, like, policies. Like, obviously, f*** the policies of the right, but also f*** some of the policies on the left! She did not name the policies on the left she was referring to.Thats why I cant endorse, she continued, adding that shes unwilling to put her name and her entire project behind a single political party. There is no way I can stand behind some of the lefts completely transphobic and completely genocidal views.F**k Trump for f**king real, Roan added. But f**k some of the s**t that has gone down in the Democratic Party that has failed people like me and you, and more so Palestine. And more so every marginalized community in the world. @chappellroan Im done talking about it. If you dont get what im saying from this, its a lost cause. And im not forcing you to agree with me. This is my statement. Have a good day original sound chappell roan As them notes, Roan has repeatedly spoken out against the Biden administrations role in Israels ongoing war in Gaza. During her breakthrough performance at New York Citys Governors Ball in June, she called for freedom for all oppressed people in occupied territories, and has raised funds for Palestinian aid via the merch table at her shows. Earlier this month, Roan told Rolling Stone that shed considered accepting an invitation to perform at the White Houses Pride celebration this year so that she could protest the war by reading poems written by Palestinian women. Roan ultimately declined to appear at the White House. She has not, however, specified a single policy or piece of anti-trans legislation backed by Democrats. In this months Rollin Stone profile, Roan did express relief that she didnt appear at the White House, because they just made a huge statement about trans kids a couple weeks ago. Roan may have been referring to comments made by Biden administration spokespersons to The New York Times and Fox News in June, stating that the administration opposes gender-affirming surgeries for minors, which are exceptionally rare. In July, a White House spokesperson clarified the administrations position in a statement to The 19th, saying that the administration continue[s] to support gender-affirming care for minors, which represents a continuum of care, and respect[s] the role of parents, families, and doctors in these decisions. In the same statement, the White House spokesperson reiterated the administrations opposition to Republican-backed laws banning gender-affirming care for young people, quoting a statement President Joe Biden made in June 2023: As President Biden has repeatedly said, Its wrong that extreme officials are pushing hateful bills targeting transgender children, terrifying families, and criminalizing doctors. These are our kids. These are our neighbors. Its cruel and its callous. While the Democratic National Committee (DNC) faced criticism for not featuring any transgender speakers at Augusts Democratic National Convention and for seemingly shying away from trans issues to appeal to swing voters, a DNC spokesperson noted in a statement to LGBTQ Nation that this years convention boasted over 50 trans and nonbinary delegates. And as LGBTQ Nations Mira Lazine noted, the 2024 Democratic platform states the partys commitment to transgender rights and its intention to oppose restrictions on transgender healthcare. Trumps Agenda 47, meanwhile, touts the Republican nominees intention to ask Congress to pass a bill establishing that the only genders recognized by the United States government are male and female and they are assigned at birth. It also says Trump would sign a federal law banning what it describes as child sexual mutilation the rights characterization of gender-affirming surgeries, which, again, are almost never performed on minors. Also included in Agenda 47 is Trumps Plan to Save American Education and Give Power Back to Parents, which promises to cut federal funding for any school or program pushing Critical Race Theory, gender ideology, or other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content on our children, adopt a Parental Bill of Rights that includes complete curriculum transparency, and to keep men out of womens sports.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

  • Anti-Transgender Laws Cause up to 72% Increase in Suicide Attempts Among Transgender and Nonbinary Youth, Study Shows
A first-of-its kind peer-reviewed study found state-level anti-transgender laws increased past year-suicide attempts among a sample of more than 61,000 transgender and nonbinary youth in the United StatesSeptember 26, 2024 Researchers at The Trevor Project, the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ young people, published a study in the peer-reviewed journal, Nature Human Behaviour, that found anti-transgender state-level laws has a significant and causal impact on suicide risk among transgender and nonbinary young people across the United States. From 2018 to 2022, 48 anti-transgender laws were enacted in the U.S. across 19 different state governments. The study examined the causal relationship between these laws and suicide risk over this five-year time period, using national survey data collected from more than 61,000 transgender and nonbinary youth. Results concluded that, during this time period, anti-transgender laws significantly increased incidents of past-year suicide attempts among transgender and nonbinary youth by as much as 72%.This groundbreaking study offers robust and indisputable evidence to support what we have already known: the recent wave of anti-transgender laws in the United States is quite literally risking the lives of young people across the country, said Dr. Ronita Nath (she/her), Vice President of Research at The Trevor Project. From a scientific perspective, studying the phenomenon of how these policies impact LGBTQ+ young peoples mental health is relatively new. In our analysis of data collected from more than 61,000 transgender and nonbinary youth across five years, this study critically confirms for the first time a causal relationship between anti-transgender laws and heightened suicide risk among transgender and nonbinary young people. The studys findings demonstrated a significant increase in suicide attempts among all participants whose home state had enacted at least one anti-transgender law. The highest increase in suicide attempt rates ranging from 7% to 72% was reported among participants younger than age 18. Across the full sample of transgender and nonbinary young people ages 13-24, an increase in suicide attempt rates of 38% to 44% was observed. It is without question that anti-transgender policies, and the dangerous rhetoric surrounding them, take a measurable toll on the health and safety of transgender and nonbinary young people all across the country, said Jaymes Black (she/they/he pronouns), Chief Executive Officer at The Trevor Project. As we get closer to critical elections this November, these young people will continue to be reduced to political talking points. I urge every adult no matter your political beliefs to remember that transgender and nonbinary young people are our family, our friends, and our neighbors. Its not necessary to fully understand their experience to acknowledge that they like all young people deserve dignity, respect, and the ability to lead healthy and full lives. The laws enacted, which are rooted in anti-transgender biases and misconceptions, encompass a range of issues, from limiting access to gender-affirming medical care or bathrooms to prohibiting transgender and nonbinary youth from participating on sports teams or in school activities that match their gender identity. The researchers examined the impact of state-level anti-transgender laws on suicide rates among transgender and nonbinary young people using a difference-in-differences research design. This statistical method compares the changes in outcomes between a group that is exposed to a treatment (in this case, anti-transgender laws) and a group that does not experience this treatment. The design controls for differences across states, as well as national-level trends over time. The unique data collection in this study created the opportunity to directly compare changes in suicide rates among transgender and nonbinary young people before and after anti-transgender laws were enacted in states. This research complies with all relevant ethical regulations and was reviewed and approved by an independent Institutional Review Board, Solutions IRB. Anti-trans laws cause increase in suicide attempts according to massive new study
A new study, which was published earlier today in the journal Nature Human Behavior, reveals that anti-transgender laws have a direct, causal relationship with youth suicide attempts: attempted suicide rates increased by as much as 72% following the passage of such laws. The study analyzed laws in the United States, breaking their sample down into participants for each state plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. The authors tracked self-reported suicide attempts in youth ages 13 to 17 across multiple years, including after anti-trans laws were enacted in peoples home states. The rate of attempted suicide increased by up to 72% following the passage of an anti-trans law in ones home state. Related 40% of LGBTQ+ youth have considered suicide, new CDC study finds Queer youth were also more likely to abuse substances and miss school due to bullying. Anti-trans laws have been enacted in states across the country, ranging from Utahs bathroom bans on trans people in government facilities to Idahos forced misgendering laws to Floridas severe restrictions on gender-affirming care. These laws have forced trans people and families of trans people across the country to flee their home states out of fear for their safety. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Similar results were found in a sample containing trans and gender nonbinary (TGNB) participants up to the age of 24, with the authors reporting a 38 to 44% increase in past-year suicide attempts following the passage of anti-trans laws. A separate analysis of TGNB youth who had already reported a history of suicide attempts before these laws were enacted shows that, in each age group, there were still substantial increases in the number of people who reported attempting suicide, ranging up to a 49% increase. In many of these cases, the researchers found that rates of suicide attempts grew over time, which the authors suggest is due to the effects of these laws being felt more with each passing day. That is, the authors suggest that it is not about whether TGNB youth learn that these laws exist or about when media reports on them, but rather the tangible effects these laws have on their lives that cause the results seen in this study. Our findings point to evidence that TGNB (transgender and nonbinary) young people in states where anti-transgender laws were enacted experienced statistically significant increases both in the number of past-year suicide attempts and in reporting at least one past-year suicide attempt, especially one and two years after anti-transgender law enactment, write the authors of the study. Our findings build on recent scholarship that demonstrates the association between enactment of state-level anti-transgender laws and increased suicide-related internet searches by people living in those states by providing evidence of a causal relationship between enactment of state-level anti-transgender laws and increased suicide attempts among TGNB young people. Results held up to numerous checks for robustness and to ensure that the results were not some sort of placebo effect, or a false result caused by errors in the data analysis process. The results also held when controlling for confounding variables. The results suggested that trans youth of color and the youngest in the population were the most likely to attempt suicide. A final analysis found that the COVID-19 pandemic had a minimal impact on the change in rates. This groundbreaking study offers robust and indisputable evidence to support what we have already known: the recent wave of anti-transgender laws in the United States is quite literally risking the lives of young people across the country, said Dr. Ronita Nath, vice president of research at The Trevor Project and co-author of the study, in a press release. These laws have become a major subject of contention in the 2024 presidential election. Anti-trans laws are a core part of Project 2025, a Heritage Foundation-backed set of instructions for Republican government officials to enact far-right policies at the national level should Donald Trump win the election. The study, which was conducted by researchers with The Trevor Project, analyzed results for cohorts between the ages of 13-17 and 13-24. The former sample comprised over 35,000 individuals, while the latter sample comprised over 61,000 individuals. The study was conducted through five separate representative non-probability cross-sectional samples, or samples that represent an entire population but are non-random and do not follow the same participants over time. Participants were recruited via targeted ads on social media sites like Facebook or Instagram and filled out online surveys during each data collection period.Editors note: If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Dem lawmaker accused of writing racist, homophobic tweets. He says someone else wrote them.
A Pennsylvania Democratic state senator has denied Republican claims that he made racist and homophobic remarks on social media over a decade ago, NBC News reported. On Tuesday, Sept. 24, the Pennsylvania Senate Republican Campaign Committee (SRCC) accused Sen. Jimmy Dillon (D-PA) of posting offensive comments about Black, Asian, and LGBTQ communities on X, formerly known as Twitter, through an account associated with the basketball academy he runs, called Hoops 24-7. Related Trans candidate Vivian Smotherman was attacked by Libs of TikTok. Shes fighting back by winning. Smotherman exuded confidence talked to LGBTQ Nation about her campaign, racist charter schools, and studying trans history. The SRCC pointed to five tweets from 2011 to 2015, which have since been deleted, but screenshots were provided. Distasteful tweets from more than a decade ago written by someone else dont change that.A spokesperson for Dillons campaign said that the SRCCs accusations were typical, phony MAGA Republican distraction.Theyre digging up decades-old tweets written by someone else and waving them around like maniacs, the spokesperson said. • Title IX and Back to School: What it Means for LGBTQ+ Young People
Its back to school season, and millions of young people across the country are returning for another academic year. Returning to school can bring up a multitude of feelings excitement to see old friends and make new ones, anticipation of meeting new teachers, and even some nerves about more difficult course material. LGBTQ+ young people experience all of the same emotions when returning to school, but theres often additional factors including anxiety, depression, and other adverse mental health outcomes depending on how supportive and affirming their family, community, and school environment is.This past April, the U.S. Department of Education released the Final Rule under Title IX. The new rules represented a historic opportunity to advance explicit protections for LGBTQ+ young people against discrimination. The Trevor Projects research has found that school policies play a significant role in LGBTQ+ young peoples mental health, with the presence of even one anti-LGBTQ+ policy being associated with higher rates of anxiety, depression, and past-year suicide attempts for young LGBTQ+ students. As such, the implementation of the new Title IX rule marked an important advancement in ensuring safer schools for LGBTQ+ young people nationwide. While the rule went into effect on August 1, 2024, these updated protections for LGBTQ+ youth in every state were not an immediate reality. Lawsuits challenging the 2024 Rule have temporarily blocked the Rule from taking effect in 26 states and several individual schools across the country. Just last month, the 11th District Court of Appeals granted injunctive relief in the case State of Alabama, et al. v. U.S. Department of Education, et al., which reinstated the ban on the new Rule in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. This district ruling is particularly concerning given that LGBTQ+ youth in the South already report having increased past-year suicide attempts and less access to LGBTQ+ acceptance and affirming spaces when compared to other regions. Access to affirming spaces, including schools, is an essential component of reducing suicide risk among LGBTQ+ young people. In creating a world where all LGBTQ+ young people are safe and affirmed, we know that legal protections such as Title IX are only the baseline for creating LGBTQ+ inclusive schools. To ensure every LGBTQ+ young person can bring their authentic self to school every day, its essential that school administrators and staff review their protocols and procedures to determine how they can best support students in their district. Resources such as The Trevor Projects Affirming Schools Checklist and GLSEN can serve as a guide to support comprehensive policy updates and implementation.Information on Title IX and how to file a complaint with the Department is available on the Department of Educations website. The post Title IX and Back to School: What it Means for LGBTQ+ Young People appeared first on The Trevor Project.

These husbands went from broke to financially successful. Now they want to help you.
When John Schneider and David Auten were just a year and a half into their relationship, they learned that they had a combined $51,000 in credit card debt. Though they had both worked in finance for nearly 15 years, their over-the-top, fabulous lifestyle was leading them to a future where theyd never own a home or have any retirement savings. It was that kind of kind of slap across the face that said, Get your financial you-know-what together, if you really want to have any sort of life that you really will enjoy in the future,' Auten told LGBTQ Nation. Together, they created a plan and paid off their debt in three years. Related LGBTQ+ business owners want to make a positive impact on their communities A new study finds that queer entrepreneurs are more interested in giving back than their straight counterparts. But many of their friends were similarly spending above their means to appear successful, and it was then that the couple realized that almost no financial firms or advisors geared their messages towards LGBTQ+ people. To fix this, they self-published a book, began a social media presence under the name Debt Free Guys, and launched their Queer Money podcast to offer financial advice to queers of all income levels. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The now-husbands have just launched a new video series with Yahoo! Finance calledLiving Not So Fabulously,in which they talk to LGBTQ+ community leaders about their own financial journeys.LGBTQ Nation spoke to the couple about their work, the financial issues most common among queer people, and how the LGBTQ+ community can superpower its own financial influence.(The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.)How did you two realize the importance of queer representation in financial marketing and advice? David Auten: [When] we confessed to each other that we had $51,000 in credit card debt, we kind of had that realization that we were having lots of fun in the moment, but we were not saving anything for the future. So that was the first step. [But] we knew so many other people in our circle of friends and in our community who were [also] spending way more money than they were making. It was clear that we were all spending to live a certain lifestyle. So when John and I finally started to get together an idea of what to do, it was first, Lets write a book. We self-published, but we were actually trying to publish it with a traditional publisher, and they said, Nobodys going to read your book, its just not going to sell because nobody knows who you are. So thats when we started blogging and getting into the personal finance space, and realized that there wasnt anyone talking to the [LGBTQ+] community, and we kind of felt like that was our responsibility.John Schneider: Thats why were super excited about the unique show weve created in partnership with Yahoo Finance, because theyre the biggest platform out there for financial news and market news. Were really hoping that that captures the attention of the community and sort of acts as a threshold into having the broader discussion about anything from paying off debt, improving your credit score, all the way up to investing and saving for retirement.Yahoo Finance David Auten and John SchneiderWho are some of the people youll be talking to on your show?David Auten: Last week, we interviewed Todd Sears. Hes the CEO of Out Leadership. He was the first financial advisor to really break into serving the LGBTQ+ community space as a financial advisor. Within a year, he had over $100 million of assets under his management, and that caught the attention of Merrill Lynch and caused Merrill Lynch to invest $3 million into the LGBT community. We also interviewed Michael Selditch, a director. He just premiered his new movie, Happy Clothes. We already published an episode with Patrick Riley, a field producer for Oprah Winfrey By 2022, his emergency savings were depleted because he wasnt getting as many jobs [during the shutdowns of 2021]. On top of that, then he had a house fire, completely lost everything. So he talks about the struggle of not having adequate emergency savings at that point in time because of decisions he made, he didnt have adequate homeowners insurance. He talks about how he overcame all that. Another episode that Im excited about is an interview with Ruth Jacks. Shes an executive at Wells Fargo She went from being a homeless single mother to becoming an executive at one of the largest banks in the world, and just how she got there and overcame all her struggles, psychological and real, various challenges to get going from destitution to the successes shes had. We are kind of focusing on those individuals that we look up to in our community to reduce the shame that many of us have around the things that weve done with our own finances.Youve worked extensively with LGBTQ+ people across the nation. What are the most common financial issues they face? David Auten: For two years in a row, we did studies with The Motley Fool where we surveyed 2,000 LGBTQ+ folks. One of the startling statistics that came back was that, in 2023, 72% of people surveyed said they were dealing with a high amount of financial stress. Our community is [also] struggling to keep up with the cost of living. [During the shutdowns], 56% of LGBTQ+ folks said that they or someone in their household had either lost their job, been furloughed or had their hours reduced, compared to 44% of non-queer people. So as a queer person, you were more likely to be in that situation where your household was struggling financially. And what sorts of needs are you seeing among those of us in the community who are a bit more financially well-established?John Schneider: One of the biggest issues highlighted from our study was that only 10% of respondents either a will or an estate established thats, like, 90% of us who dont have that established Every person needs to have a will or an estate established. Otherwise, the states going to figure out what to do with what is left over, or your family and you might not have that great of a relationship with your family,A lot of us dont get the benefit of inheriting money because were LGBTQ+, weve been ostracized or kicked out of our house or our family, so that money doesnt trickle down to us. Its exactly the situation thats going to happen with David here when his parents pass away. So how are we going to build generational wealth and keep that money within the community so that the LGBTQ+ folks coming up behind us can start off maybe on a better foot than we did?David Auten: For folks who do have money and have saved for retirement, theres a big question mark as to where we can safely retire. We live in the Midwest, and if we dont want to retire in the Midwest, where do we go? We dont want to go to Florida. Were definitely not going to go to Alabama or Louisiana.Theres this question mark of, Where can I live, where I can be me, where I can be safe and I dont have to worry? As we start to check the boxes of where we can live, all of a sudden we go to states and cities that are becoming more and more and more expensive. That means that what we have saved doesnt go as far, [and we wonder,] Am I going to outlive my money because Ive been forced to live in a place like San Francisco or L.A. or Palm Springs? You two have also stressed the importance of using queer wealth to create positive social change. Can you tell me a little bit more about that?David Auten: On average, LGBTQ+ folks, 20 million of us living in the United States, were going to donate about $20 a year to LGBTQ+ organizations by the end of our lives $20. We spend more than that on cocktails on Friday night, right? That is really putting in place all these roadblocks for the community. Right now, a well-funded, well-heeled group of people on the far right have been building up a warchest of billions of dollars for the last 50 years They have invested this money, and now that money is growing, and the growth is paying to build this army of lawyers and politicians and organizations that are fighting against us. Whereas we do a lot of pass-through: We donate to a charity, and that charity immediately spends the money, right? So we dont have the power of the stock market behind us. So John and I are encouraging, especially individuals who have a little bit extra, to start setting up donor-advised funds so that we can use the market growth as a catalyst or as a fuel to help us be able to fight against those organizations that are trying to take us down as a community. Some businesses are getting targeted or shamed on social media for supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Others have begun rolling back their DEI commitments. What does this trend mean for the average queer worker or consumer?John Schneider: I think that in time, the blowback will dissipate. Theres too much data out there to show that inclusive and accepting workplaces have more ingenuity, more creativity, and theres actually correlation to a bottom-line growth. Any CEO or business leader who cares about bottom-line growth needs to care about their LGBTQ people and all minority groups if they actually want to create a better organization.Whats probably going to happen is theyre going to [re-introduce] these DEI efforts, but theyre going to call them something else theyre not going to start necessarily discriminating against people just because of the blowback. Our community needs to have sort of a soul-searching moment, because up until maybe last year or the year prior, we were having a lot of discussion accusing brands of rainbow-washing [by mainly supporting the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month], and then as soon as they get some blowback and start to roll back some of those efforts, now were saying, Well, whered you go? David Auten: If youre a CEO or an executive, and you care about the pipeline of growth for your company, you look at the data and you see that 20% of millennials identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community, nearly 33% of Gen Z identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community, you have to be thinking to yourself, We cannot not tap into that those billions or trillions of dollars that are going to be spent. We will maybe have to hold [CEOs] hand to the fire to start showing that they care about the community. I think, in the next couple of years, were going to see a lot more talk around, How do we identify companies that are walking the walk, instead of just talking it? What makes you feel more optimistic about the LGBTQ+ communitys ability to consolidate, grow, and effectively deploy our influence?John Schneider: Im hopeful because I see whats happening at the association levels and the movement trying to get more queer folks into the decision-making hierarchy in corporations. Organizations like Out Leadership, Reaching Out, Lesbians Who Tech, Out in Finance these kinds of associations and groups are organizing around whatever industry they have in common outside of being queer.I think that thats going to happen more and more for our community, and well see more queer folks rise in the ranks across America [and] be in places to be able to make decisions that are beneficial to folks in the community. One of the things that John and I talk about is something called cascading homophobia. If Im a gay man and I want to get hired, promoted, or be on a particular project, and the person who is able to make the decision may have to answer to their boss [who has] shown themselves to be overtly homophobic or transphobic, the decision-maker is stuck in the middle: Do I make a decision that benefits the person that I really want to have the job but is gay, or do I listen to what my boss says and protect myself? That homophobia oftentimes cascades down to queer individuals not getting the promotion, not getting hired, not getting the project where they get to shine. So, if there isnt that kind of somebody looking up and saying, I dont care what you say, Im going to promote this person, like the rest of us would for each other, then we dont progress right? We dont make better, bigger paychecks; we dont have the financial strength; we cant share it with the community. So I think thats one of the things that [feels[ really optimistic: All these organizations are focused on how we as a community can become more powerful as employees, as consumers, as individuals, and the decision-making as that starts to happen is where were going to start to see real progress in the community when it comes to our finances and our outlook for the future.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Amazing mother explains exactly why she isnt afraid of drag queen story hours in viral video
Danielle Scampini Linn, a mother in Wisconsin, has received applause online for her moving speech at a PBS News Hour town hall event about the issues that actually matter to her as a parent. When I put my kids to bed at night, Im not afraid of Drag Queen Story Hour. Im afraid of whats actually going to happen to them. Im afraid of what the planet will look like in the next 20 years because were not taking care of it, she said. What is scary is the idea that I think, every single day when I drop my kids off at school, will I see them come home? or will someone come into the school and shoot them?Gun violence, specifically Americans easy access to guns, is especially personal for Linn, who shared that her father died by suicide ten years ago because he was very easily able to access a gun in this state, despite having a mental illness. Linn also stood up for trans kids, denouncing the discrimination and bullying that trans kids face. Richard Madden shows off chiseled abs in new movie trailer and we are SEATED
We are excited for the plot of Richard Madden's new film. We love a good murder mystery, and Prime Video has us seated and ready for their upcoming movie Killer Heat.Starring Madden (Game of Thrones), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception), and Shailene Woodley (Big Little Lies), the film is based on Jo Nesbs 2021 short story The Jealousy Man. According to IMDb, it will follow twin brothers, both played by Madden, who find themselves in a dangerous love triangle on an isolated Greek island. The Jealousy Man would then be the wounded detective, Gordon-Levitt, assigned to the investigation. This one has everything from intrigue, violence, drama, and, most importantly, Maddens chiseled abs on full display (pardon us while we take a moment to go wipe up the drool.)While the Scottish actor has refrained from mentioning his sexuality in public, his portrayal of the gay character John Reid in Rocketman at least lets our fantasies run a little wild, and we'll watch him in anything he's in.Apart from Maddens abs, here are a few other things were excited about from the film:Shailene WoodleyAhailene Woodley looks fierce af in this film and it looks like a great progression of character as compared to what she did on Big Little Lies (even though theyre obviously not the same character at all.) Robert Madden playing multiple rolesMaybe this means well get extra shirtless time? More sex scenes? Perhaps a hot threesome like what may happen in Robert Pattinsons new film? At the moment, theres no knowing, but were excited to watch him pull off a couple of characters anyway. The full intrigue of what's going onIf you havent read the short story its based on, youre not alone. Even if you have, anyone who knows anything about book-to-film translations knows its always going to have something different, and were excited to see the type of creative liberties this movie explores. Plus, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is just as sexy as Robert Madden, and wed be lying if we didnt want to see them together in some capacity. The sexual tensionWe know theres going to be sex in the movie. We dont know if there will be full-on nudity, but since Madden showed us some skin before, were hoping we get enough sex scenes to make way for a super-hot ranking.Stream the film for yourself on Amazon Prime when it hits on September 26.

Rep. Clay Higgins racist tweet is only the tip of the iceberg
This articlefirst appeared on Mother Jones. It has been republished with the publications permission. On Wednesday afternoon,Rep. Higgins, then 30, was commenting on Pat Buchanans run for president, which came one year after the former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard and neo-Nazi David Duke was nearly elected governor of Louisiana.Duke wont get the vote. A U.S. activist allegedly accepted $300K from Russia to push anti-gay laws in Africa
A wide-ranging investigation by the Wall Street Journal has uncovered evidence linking Russian cash to an anti-LGBTQ+ U.S. activist who helped promote Kill the Gays laws in Uganda and across Africa. The publication found a large infusion of Russian cash helped fund an international conference in Uganda organized by Mormon anti-LGBTQ+ activist Sharon Slater and her Arizona-based Family Watch International organization to promote deadly queerphobic laws in the continent. Related Rachel Maddow connects Ugandas Kill the Gays bill to Arizona Christians Ugandas Parliament passed the law again today. It makes it a crime to just identify as LGBTQ+. Emails, WhatsApp messages and interviews with conference attendees indicate Russia transferred $300,000 to help cover the costs of the March 2023 event. The conference occurred around the passage of Ugandas precedent-setting Anti-Homosexuality Law, which mandates the death penalty for repeat homosexual offenders. Global perspectives delivered right to your inbox Our newsletter bridges borders to bring you LGBTQ+ news from around the world. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Days before the conference, held in Entebbe along the shores of Lake Victoria, Uganda Parliament lawmakers received an email carbon copied to Slater, the conference organizer confirming that the Russian Embassy had just completed the transfer of cash.Despite the emailed evidence to the contrary, Slater denied any knowledge of Russias contribution to her anti-LGBTQ+ campaign. She told the Journal that she and Family Watch never had any involvement with the Russian government on any African issues. She also claimed Family Watch has never supported anti-LGBTQ legislation in African countries and wasnt responsible for the treatment of homosexuals under African laws. At the conference, attendees, including Slater and representatives from some 20 African nations, agreed to a common set of principles. Among them were a pledge to outlaw homosexuality and another to legally define a persons gender as either male or female.Adding to the evidence of Russian collusion, months earlier Russias ambassador to Uganda met with Ugandan Parliament speaker Anita Among, urging her to fast-track the Kill the Gays law through parliament, where it passed overwhelmingly and was cheered by lawmakers. This is the time you are going to show us whether youre a homo or youre not, Among told the packed chamber. Similar laws modeled on both on Ugandas draconian legislation, which Slater spent years helping draft, and Russian President Vladimir Putins gay propaganda laws, have passed or are making their way toward signature in Kenya, Ghana and other African nations.Slater and Family Watch have spent decades spreading their version of anti-LGBTQ+ hate across the African continent with a message that has resonated with allies in opposition to decadent Western values, including right-wing Catholics and Christians in Africa and Russias Orthodox Church.Western countries and the United Nations, Slater has stated repeatedly, are working to mainstream homosexuality and transgender ideology into the laws, policies and programs of every African country.Following Slaters Russia-funded event, she told Ugandas First Lady Janet Museveni, in comments later broadcast on Ugandan state television, I cannot tell you the power that I think will reverberate across Africa, that will affect the whole world, from this conference. 30 HILARIOUS reactions to JD Vance misgendering himself and we can't stop LAUGHING
(@) Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance has only been on the national stage for a few months, but in that time, he has repeatedly managed to make himself into a laughing stock, and lucky for us, hes done it yet again!During a campaign stop in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday, Vance accidentally misgendered himself while fielding questions about the Trump campaigns support of North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who has been embroiled in a sex scandal. Other than being a wife to this beautiful lady here and a father to our three kids, the greatest honor of my life has been running for this office of Vice President of the United States, Vance told the crowd.Yes, you read that correctly: Donald Trumps running mate said its an honor to be a wife. Vance didnt seem to notice the hilarious flub and kept right on talking with the audience full of supposed Vance and Trump supporters laughed at him.Between this and his penchant for wearing eyeliner and dressing in drag (theres even photographic evidence!), youd think Vance would be kinder to the trans community, but hes a Republican, which means hes a massive hypocrite. Vance introduced a bill last year that would have banned transition-related medical care for minors nationally and would have charged healthcare providers who violated the law with up to 15 years in prison, he once said he would oppose federal protections for same-sex marriage and has repeated the right-wing talking point that LGBTQ+ people are groomers. He also introduced the Passport Sanity Act, which would have banned X gender markers on U.S. passports, saying at the time that there are only two genders. Those are big words from someone who likes to wear makeup and calls himself a wife.MeidasTouch media network posted a video clip of Vances speech on X (formerly Twitter), and people flooded the comments section, calling it a Freudian slip and joking that the VP hopeful is now embracing gender fluidity. An anti-trans conservative accidentally misgendering himself in front of a crowd of Republicans and then being ROASTED for it online is exactly the kind of pick-me-up we need today.Keep scrolling to see the funniest reactions to Vance accidentally calling himself a woman! Earlier this week, 20 Republican attorneys generalbanded togetherto send a letter to the leadership of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the national professional association for pediatricians, accusing them of breaking the law for supporting age-appropriate and life-saving gender-affirming care for trans youth. The letter accuses the organization of violating consumer legal protections for allegedly deceiving the public on the reversibility of puberty blockers while also seeking detailed information on their internal evidence assessments and communications. Related Ron DeSantis may sue Bud Light over the Dylan Mulvaney video He wants to punish the beer brand for associating with radical social ideologies and woke virtue signaling. The letter was sent by Idaho Attorney General Raul Labrador. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today According to journalist Erin Reed, this letter holds no legal weight, and as such, the AAP is under no obligation to respond. The letter claims that puberty blockers, a form of medication given to youth to temporarily delay puberty so that they can better understand their identities before the permanent effects of puberty set in, are unsafe and not reversible. In support of this, it cites the Cass Review, a review of the literature on puberty blockers in transgender youth that has been used to justify bans on puberty blockers in the United Kingdom. However, the letter does not mention the numerous critiques of the Cass Review, all of which suggest that it got much of the science wrong, failed to consult with proper experts, and left out pertinent research that should have changed the conclusion.A separate review by the Sax Institute, which was commissioned by the New South Wales, Australia, Ministry of Health, found that puberty blockers are safe, effective, and entirely reversible. It drew from established research on not only transgender youth but youth with precocious puberty, or early-onset puberty, who wanted their puberty delayed to be more in line with their peers.Research on precocious puberty and puberty blockers has been happening for decades, and it all supports puberty blockers as safe and life-saving. The letter also cited news articles, fringe journal pieces, and opinion pieces from anti-trans advocates in support of their claims. Among those cited is Leor Sapir, a non-expert who publishes on the conservative Manhattan Institute-backed outletCity Journal. The letters citations also include news articles from New York Times Azeen Ghoryashi, who some have criticized for allegedly biased coverage of transgender issues, and psychiatrist Dr. Stephen Levine, who frequently provides expert testimony in court cases opposing gender-affirming care while often being dismissed due to judges finding he lacks professional experience with gender-affirming care. The letter also claims that the widely regarded World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) is unreliable, citing in support of this a set of leaked documents from the organizations internal communications called the WPATH Files. Reed found these leaks contained over 200 factual errors regarding gender-affirming care and judged them as containing irrelevant information regarding the professional merit of WPATH.The letter concludes by demanding all internal communications held with WPATH in relation to their Standards of Care, detailed information regarding the AAPs views on puberty blockers, and its views on the leaked WPATH Files. LGBTQ Nationreached out to the American Academy of Pediatrics for comment. However, they did not respond before the publication of this article.Other states that are represented here include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia. Are you into podophilia? Here's how you'll know
Theres so much more to exploring sex than basic penetration or oral encounters. There are kinks and fetishes aplenty for people to explore, with some a little more taboo than others. You may know all about the growing popularity of maschalagnia, or a fetish involving sniffing armpits. While the stigma for maschalagnia has lessened over time, its not as popular as an even bigger fetish known as podophilia. You may have had to stop and re-read that word, but you did read it correctly and it is different than what you may have initially read it as.Podophilia is a foot fetish, and while many people claim to be repulsed by the idea, its actually one of the most commonly practiced fetishes out there, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. Lets take a look at what it is, some misconceptions about it, and how normalized the practice has become. Whats the deal with feet fetishes?Having a foot fetish is similar many other fetishes in that those who dont practice it may not understand it and therefore try to shame you for it.If you experience podophilia, the long story short of it is, youre sexually attracted to feet or objects associated with feet. Even if people try to shame you for it, theres nothing wrong with it and you should never be embarrassed so long as you practice safely and with conscent Often, people sexually attracted to feet find themselves on the butt-end of a joke that is, until they watch a super hot scene like in Fellow Travelers when Jonathan Bailey sucked on Matt Bomers toes.Is there any psychology behind the sexual fascination?Theres always a psychological reasoning behind any desire, fantasy, kink, or anything in between, but that doesnt have to be as scary as people make it out to be.In 2019, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) published a study through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that focused on sexuality in the 21st century, with an aim to explain fetishism. It noted that the first reports of various types of fetishism date back to the early 19th century, which isnt actually as long ago as it seems.During the exploration, the research provided psychoanalysis and behavioral theories to explain the genesis of fetishistic disorders, with the primary theory being that the event that spawns the fetish occurs during childhood. Its explained that, during childhood, people may fixate on a certain object, which causes them to sexually fixate on it during adulthood because they consider it to be a good object. The idea is that, as people grow, they become aroused by the objects or body parts that remind them of their childhood. How popular are feet fetishes?Sometimes questions like these are difficult to be precise about because oftentimes people, fearing judgment, will not be totally forthcoming about their desires. With that said, a study done by the International Journal of Impotence Research (IJIR) showed podophilia was one of the most commonly practiced fetishes as early as 2007.The findings at the time showed that around one-third of participants had a preference for body parts or objects usually associated with the body, stating that feet and objects associated with feet were the most common target of preferences.Although you don't have to subscribe to any sexual identity, foot fetishes tend to be more common among men of all types, regardless of their sexual preference. Is there a difference between a foot fetish and shoe fetish? You may not think it upon initial definition, but having a foot fetish and having a shoe fetish are actually two entirely different things. For those who prefer feet, that preference usually comes with bare feet. Similar to those who enjoy sniffing armpits, you may want the feet to be dirty or sweaty, or you may prefer them to be clean and smooth. For those who experience a shoe fetish, also known as retifism, the sexual arousal comes from feet being in shoes, and can even appeal to wearing the shoes yourself. You may prefer specific types of shoes like heels or sandals, but most simply enjoy shoes in general. While they are not one and the same, many people have a fetish for both. I think I have a foot fetish, what do I do?Communication is always so important, regardless of the topic at hand. When it comes to podophilia, especially if youre in a relationship, talk with your partner about your desires and see if you can find a common ground; they may be just as interested but are nervous to share. If you do decide to explore, either in a relationship or any other partner, you may start out small with some massages or perhaps washing their feet. You may feel more comfortable having your feet played with after having a pedicure, which would make a foot job (stimulating the genitals with your feet) a lot easier and more comfortable.Although some sexually transmitted infections such as genital herpes, syphilis, and human papillomavirus (HPV) can be transferred through skin-to-skin contact, for the most part, exploring a foot fetish is considered relatively safe. What type of online platforms exist for me?In the Age of the Internet, there will always be a place for you to explore what you need.If you're looking to make money off of your feet, sites like OnlyFans or OnlyFeet are a great avenue and also provide a space where you can keep your identity private. Sometimes people pay plenty of money to do something as simple as watch you take off your socks. There are also options for some feet-only fetishism, as well.FeetFinder allows users to create profiles that allow them to either view, buy, or sell pictures and videos of feet. It's considered among the largest and safest places online to do so.Subsequently, FunWithFeet allows for the same. Both platforms offer blogs and more in-depth knowledge about foot fetishes and also offer a community to help you with any of your questions. As always, it's most important that you explore safely, honor your body along the way, be kind to yourself on your journey, and don't let anyone else tell you how to think or feel.

Why 'Bridgerton Ball' scam is being called the new 'Glasgow Willy Wonka Experience' explained
Fans are fuming after trying to escape into a Regency-era fantasy world by attending a Bridgerton-themed ball turned into an epic fail!Photos and videos taken by attendees are going viral on social media for the event on Sunday, which was advertised as a way for fans of the Shondaland series to step into the enchanting world of the Regency-era for an evening of sophistication, grace and historical charm in a historic building in downtown Detroit.Instead of the glitz and glamour fit for a queen, people who bought tickets for the "Bridgerton Ball" were greeted by a nearly empty event hall with no seating that left decked-out attendees sitting on the floor, a pathetic grass background for photos, raw chicken dinners, and to top it all off, the only entertainment provided was a single pole-dancing stripper and a lone violinist. Hundreds of people paid anywhere from $100 to $1,000 per ticket to attend what many are calling a scam and comparing to the Willy Wonka Experience that earned headlines back in March for being such a mess, except the Bridgerton Ball was less terror-inducing and more just sad, according to the Hollywood Reporter. (@) People who bought tickets and donned beautiful gowns and suits were probably expecting something akin to Netflixs touring event called the Queens Ball: A Bridgerton Experience, but instead got Party City-level decorations and were left buying Kit Kats from vendors so they would have something edible to eat. This may not have risen to the level of the Fyre Festival scam, but people who were disappointed and angry with the event put on by Uncle & Me LLC took to social media to air their grievances. Some made TikTok videos documenting the bizarre experience, while others posted photos on X (formerly Twitter).@kiimberylyDearesr gentle readers, Enjoy my POV on unclenme bridgerton ball YIKES #bridgertonball #unclenme #scammers #detroitbridgertonNot only were people comparing it to the fever dream that was the Willy Wonka Experience, but also writing that someone should make a documentary, calling it a dumpster fire, and clowning on the Temu decorations. The Cut even interviewed the dancer, Tink, who was only hired three hours before the event and paid $800 to pole dance, and was told to mingle with guests and say Hello, Im your Bridgerton fairy, calling the request weird. I didnt really think about it too much because of the Great Gatsby event I did; they had pole dancing there. But now, thinking about it, Great Gatsby is in the 20s. Bridgerton is the 1800s. But I just had a role to play, and they were paying me, so I did it.Keep scrolling for more funny reactions to the Bridgerton Ball! (@) (@) (@) (@) (@) (@) (@) (@) (@) (@) (@)

Black, gay hospital worker called out his employer for unsanitary conditions. He faced slurs.
A Michigan man says he faced racist and anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination and was later fired after he reported unsanitary conditions in two Detroit hospitals where he was contracted to work.According to the Detroit Metro Times, Just Right Law, a Michigan law firm specializing in workplace discrimination, filed a lawsuit last week on behalf of Jarrell Atkins against his former employer, North Carolina-based Compass Group and Crothall Healthcare. In his suit, Atkins, who is Black and gay, alleges retaliation, hostile work environment, wrongful termination, and violations of Michigans Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. Related Detroit is working to build an LGBTQ+ business district. Heres how theyre doing it. The Detroit Regional LGBT Chamber of Commerce is spearheading what could be a decade-long effort. Last year, Atkins filed a complaint to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) reporting unsafe, unsanitary, and dangerous conditions at Detroits Harper-Hutzel Hospital and Childrens Hospital of Michigan. Compass Group and Crothall Healthcare were contracted to provide cleaning services for the hospitals for-profit parent company, Tenet Healthcare. In his MIOSHA complaint, he claimed that doctors at the hospitals were delivering babies with unclean surgical equipment and that hospital workers used equipment contaminated by raw sewage and feces in surgical operating rooms. Atkinss suit alleges that Compass and Crothall fabricated records to avoid penalties.Atkins, who was fired in March, also claims that upper management at Compass and Crothall used racial and homophobic slurs around him, ignoring his complaints about the offensive language. As the Detroit Metro Times notes, Atkins is the third former Compass Group and Crothall Healthcare employee to sue the company in recent years alleging they were fired for raising concerns about Tenets hospitals. This lawsuit is just part of a sharp blade that is being used to eradicate the cancerous culture of profits over safety fostered by Compass and Crothall, Muneeb M. Ahmad, an attorney with Just Right Law, told the outlet. Lindsey Graham's transphobia out of the closet during judicial nominee questioning
Republican senators on Wednesday used transphobic language in their harsh questioning of a New York state judge and former congressman nominated to the federal court.During the hearing on his nomination to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York, Judge Anthony Brindisi was repeatedly challenged by Republican U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Ted Cruz of Texas over his past support for the Equality Act.Related: Trump ally Laura Loomer goes after Lindsey Graham: We all know youre gayBrindisi was one of 200 sponsors of the Equality Act during his tenure as U.S. Congressman from 2019 to 2021, representing New Yorks 22nd congressional district. The historic act would have amended existing civil rights laws to ban discrimination based on an individuals sexual or gender identity. Both senators peppered Brindisi with questions about the act and the use of bathrooms and locker rooms aligned with an individuals gender identity. Are you okay with a biological male who identifies as a female sharing a locker room? Graham asked Brindisi.I thought it to be an unacceptable outcome to share locker rooms and bathrooms based on gender identity, Graham commented about Brindisis support for the act.Cruz described the act as Orwellian during his equally lurid questioning of the state judge in Syracuse.Judge Brindisi, should biological men be able to expose themselves to unwilling women, including underaged girls? Cruz asked Brindisi.Brindisi disputed the senators framing of the legislation, which passed the House in 2019 and 2021 but died in the Senate without a vote. The bill also faced a certain veto from then-President Donald Trump if passed by the Senate.Brindisi was nominated to the federal court by President Joe Biden on July 31 of this year. (@)

I was once an architect of the Christian nationalist agenda. I regret it all.
This articlefirst appeared on Mother Jones. It has been republished with the publications permission. In 2014,at an elegant gala inside the Supreme Courts gilded Great Hall, a tuxedoed Justice Clarence Thomas turned to me and voiced his approval for my work. I glanced over to where Chief Justice John Roberts and his wife, Jane, were entertaining two of my associates, trustees of theSupreme Court Historical Society, a private, nongovernmental entity for which Roberts served as honorary chair. At that moment, I knew the secretive operation I had run, aimed at emboldening Thomas and his conservative colleagues to render the strongest possible decisions in favor of our right-wing Christian agenda, had succeeded. My organization, Faith and Action in the Nations Capital, had created an initiative we calledOperation Higher Courtthat trained wealthy couples as stealth missionaries, befriending Thomas and his wife, Ginni; Samuel and Martha-Ann Alito; and Antonin and Maureen Scalialavishing them with meals at high-end restaurants and invitations to luxurious vacation properties. Alongside these amenities, our ministry offered prayers, gift Bibles, and the assurance that millions of believers thanked God for the decisions this trio of justices rendered on abortion, health care, marriage, and gun ownership. The Supreme Court was the pinnacle of my success, but I had started with Congress, advanced to the White House, and only then took on the judicial branch. Under the banner of Faith and Action, our mission, in evangelical parlance, was to bring the Word of God to bear on the hearts and minds of those who make public policy in America. Backing me were some 50,000 donors, spread across the country, along with hundreds of church leaders and several prominent lawmakers. The goal was to convert a secular culture into a God-fearing, foundationally Christian, socially conservative, and politically Republican one. To achieve it, we raised tens of millions of dollars, mobilized activists, and lobbied lawmakers relentlessly. We accomplished all of this from the headquarters I procured in Washington, just across the street from the Supreme Court. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today In effect, we were like other lobbyists and pressure groups, only our visits to offices included saying a prayer or reading a Bible verse with the occupant. Clergy, often arrayed around the stately benches where members of both houses of Congress sit during official proceedings, accompanied us to more formal meetings. Our large public events, like the annualNational Memorial for the Pre-Born and Their Mothers and Fathersor theUS Capitol Bible Reading Marathon, would turn government venues into temporary church sanctuaries. Christian nationalist was yet to become a common expression, but my allies and I were that in every way. We believed America was founded as a Christian nation and needed to be preserved as such.Besides establishing a national organization aimed at making America part of a revivified Christendom, I chaired the National Pro-Life Religious Council, which dedicated itself to endingRoe.After Norma McCorveyrecantedher pro-abortion stance as Jane Roe, Faith and Action supported her financially. I consulted for the American Center for Law and Justice, an ultraconservative legal advocacy organization; campaigned for George W. Bush, Mitt Romney, and John McCain; and helpedRoy Moore, then Alabamas chief justice, physically install a Ten Commandments monument in the state Supreme Court building. When President George W. Bush nominated Roberts for chief justice, I was in a private box seat at the Senate confirmation hearing. At Alitos confirmation, I was the guest of Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the three-time Senate Judiciary Committee chair. And when Donald Trump chose Neil Gorsuch after Scalias death, not only was I present for the hearing, but a month before, I had coordinated prayers for Gorsuch and his family in a nearby chapel. On more than one occasion, I knelt in prayer alongside Mike Pence (when he was a member of Congress from Indiana) and other lawmakers in the vanguard of the new right.YouTube screenshot Rev. Rob Schenck preaching My efforts were rewarded handsomely. I spoke at many of the largest churches in the country and at events that drew thousands of attendees. I grew accustomed to being picked up by executive limousines, flying in private jets, and eating in the finest restaurants. We in the religious right helped foster apolitical culturethat has produced the likes of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), and former President Trump. It also gave rise to the Mississippi Republican legislators who challengedRoe v. Wade, handing Justice Alito the opportunity to write the opinion that destroyed it. My task was to convince religious leaders, officials on every level of government, and big-money benefactors that our nation was literally going to hell and the only way to rescue it was a mass conversion to Christian sensibilities. Preachers and politicians might be able to persuade some people, but the force of law would be necessary to coerce others.Much to my present regret, we succeeded. My three siblingsand I were raised to respect people of all religionsand none. In my late teens, I searched for a faith and found it in a little country church where I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Almost immediately, I felt called to give my life to Christian service. A few years later, in the late 1970s as a young minister in Rochester, New York, I received a disturbing call from a woman demanding to know my position on abortion. I hadnt given it much thought, I said, and she excoriated me. Unsettled, I looked for information on the Christian view of abortion. I found a 1978 sermon titled Abortion-on-Demand:Is It Murder? by theReverend Jerry Falwell Sr., a celebrated Southern Baptist preacher and host of the popularOld Time Gospel Hour. He called for ending legal abortion. Christians ought to join forces together on this one issue and, whatever it takes, put it through, he said. [T]he question of abortion on demand threatens our nation.America could either choose Gods way and enjoy prosperity or take the devils path to destruction. Gods way meant wives were to dutifully submit to their husbands as unto the Lord; children were to obey their parents; and everyone was to attend church, Sunday school, and Bible study. Prayer and Bible reading needed to be returned to public school classrooms. Children should be taught that sex is strictly for married couples; young people must remain virgins until their wedding night; and intercourse, while enjoyable, was principally for procreation.Falwells gospel differed distinctly from the one I had initially responded to, the one with a compassionate Jesus who blessed the poor, the forgotten, and the persecuted. Falwells message, while sprinkled with side references to marginalized people, implied they may have caused their own problems. Instead of calling upon believers to be peacemakers and to love one another, as Jesus did, Falwells Christians were modern-day crusaders conquering an evil, secular world. I embraced his challenge, feeling I could remedy the ills that beset our country, from drug use to premarital sex.By 1983, I was fully engaged with our new national evangelical political influence and had a front-row seat at the annual convention of the National Association of Evangelicals, where, for the first time, asitting president addressedthis body of leaders. In that now-famous Evil Empire speech, named for his reference to the former Soviet Union, President Ronald Reagan ticked off everything I had come to see as threats: secularism, promiscuity, and government interference with churches while barring school prayer and restricting students religious speech. Abortion on demand now takes the lives of up to one and a half million unborn children a year, Reagan continued. Human life legislation ending this tragedy will someday pass the Congress, and you and I must never rest until it does. He framed a perfect argument for this audience, saying, There is sin and evil in this world, and were enjoined by Scripture and the Lord Jesus to oppose it with all our might. He framed a perfect argument for this audience, saying, There is sin and evil in this world, and were enjoined by Scripture and the Lord Jesus to oppose it with all our might.I was all in.Thus inspired, I was primed for my second conversion.Pat Robertsona popular Christian television personality, media mogul, and, for many of us, divinely anointed prophetwas my guide. Robertsons vision for the country was the first to dominate electronic media, starting with the Christian Broadcasting Network, the international television enterprise hed founded in the early 1960s. In 1977, adding education to his list of divine objectives, he founded Regent University. With theAmerican Center for Law and Justicein 1990, he created an organization to counter what he perceived to be the excessively liberal ACLU. The enemies of America were secular humanists, he argued; to defeat them, we needed to restore Judeo-Christian traditions. With our favorite president and most revered prophet urging us to fight for the soul of our nation, fight we would. Naturally, we got behind Robertsons 1988 presidential campaign. In 1987,my twin brother, Paul, the pastor of a large church in suburban Buffalo, New York, held afuneralfor fetal remains that one of his parishioners found in a waste container outside a local medical building. He convinced me to join him and others in blockading the facilitys doors. This is how I became part of what we referred to then as theRescuemovement, a loose network of activists determined to shut down reproductive health care services. At first, our actions mimicked nonviolent tacticslike the sit-ins of the civil rights erabut the tone changed markedly during the Clinton years, when movement leaders became more aggressive. Physical confrontations between pro-choice and anti-abortion protesters became more common. Then, theshootingsbeganthree deadly incidents targeting abortion providers within two years. Even as I publicly expressed concern and shock over the violencewhile emphatically distancing our movement from any responsibilityI realized we had unleashed forces we might never be able to control. In my corner of the movement, male leaders began sporting broad-brimmed cowboy hats, oversized belt buckles, Western boots, and sometimes empty holsters, indicating that they had ready access to firearms. The once laser-focused anti-abortion message was replaced by a mishmash of screeds asserting strictly binary gender roles, opposition to LGBTQ rights, and denunciation of feminazis and Jezebelslike Hillary Clinton.Though I was uncomfortable with some of the more extreme methods and rhetoric, I remained committed to what I saw as an effort to reclaim morality. I also felt called to expand my ministry to all three branches of government, so in 1994, I relocated to Washington. First, I distributed plaques of the Ten Commandments to Republican members of Congress, encouraging them to unapologetically champion a Judeo-Christian agenda. I also invited a controversial Alabama judge to DC, where I staged anational news conferencefor him in the Capitol.Roy Moore had defied a federal court order to remove his hand-carved replica of the Ten Commandments from his courtroom. I recruited co-sponsors for a congressional resolution co-authored by thenAlabama Sen. Jeff Sessions that passed the House but stalled in the Senate. It stated, The public display, including display in government offices and courthouses, of the Ten Commandments should be permitted. When Moore was elected chief justice, I helped him set in place a large granite Ten Commandments monument inside the Alabama Judicial Building. He later refused to move it, in direct defiance of afederal court order. (Later, as a Senate candidate, Moore would beaccusedby multiple women of sexual assault and misconduct, allegations he denied.)When religion is placed at the service of a political party, it corrupts both. To claim that one political figure uniquely represents Gods will is a form of anti-Christian idolatry. In Washington, I also occasionally administered Holy Communion and delivered sermons in the Congressional Prayer Room, offered invocational prayers at functions in the Capitol complex, and linked arms with groups like the Family Research Council, the Heritage Foundation, and the formidable Council for National Policy. The CNPa nearly clandestine cabal of conservative religious, business, and political movers and shakersassembled some of the countrys wealthiest and most powerful figures inclosed-door sessions, where we heard from insiders like Supreme Court spouse Ginni Thomas and Richard Viguerie, the doyen of conservative fundraising. He held forth during cocktail hours, regaling listeners with stories of how the Red-baiting 1950s Wisconsin Sen. Joseph McCarthy inspired him to battle the communists bent on taking over America.By the winter of 2001, many other religiously motivated public interest groups were working the executive and legislative branches, so I decided to concentrate on the judiciary. In confidential meetings of top anti-abortion activists known as the115 Forum(named for a hotel meeting space), we discussed how the federal judiciary, especially the Supreme Court, was the obstacle to any progress we had made in the other two branches. Something had to be done about what some derisively called Article Threes, the judges and courts authorized under that section of the Constitution. Supporting federal and state legislative efforts could only take us so far. We needed to get to these jurists personally.First, I befriended a couple of lower-level federal judges. Sen. Hatch introduced me to others. But a culmination of my efforts was an invitation to members of the prestigious Judicial Breakfast Group from The Chambers of Justice Clarence Thomas announcing me as the speaker. The subject would be the Ten Commandments. I concluded my talk by asking the 50 or so judges in the room to proudly incorporate their Christian beliefs into their jurisprudence.YouTube screenshot Rev. Rob Schenck at an anti-abortion protest Federal judges and especially Supreme Court justices, unlike politicians, never need to shake hands across a rope line. Accessing their world required creativity. I found it through the little-knownSupreme Court Historical Society. Founded by the late Chief Justice Warren Burger, the independent nonprofit holds an annual dinner hosted by the chief justice and attended by most associate justices. Tickets are strictly controlled. By establishing a close relationship with the societys staff, I managed to secure seats each year for several of my donors, whom I would coach on how to connect with the justices attending the event. As a result, two of my most active participants, Don and Gayle Wright of Dayton, Ohio, ingratiated themselves with the Alitos, Scalias, and Thomases. When I trained my donors to interact with conservative justices on the court, I told them to reinforce for their powerful new friends how important their decisions were to the countrys future, and how critical Judeo-Christian values are to Americas success. I encouraged them to underscore how millions of citizens thanked God for their presence on the top court. In a notable instance, the Wrights were tipped off about a pending decision before it was announced to the public. As I latertoldthe House Judiciary Committee, Gayle relayed that she had learned the outcome of theBurwell v. Hobby Lobbycase while at the meal with the Alitos, that it was in Hobby Lobbys favor, and that Sam is writing it. The ruling would affirm that companies with religious objections were not required to provide contraceptive coverage in their health insurance packages. I also told the House committee that Gayle had shared the news with me and that I told the president of Hobby Lobby, Steve Greenhis parents were donors to my organizationthat they had won the case. The Green family found themselves in the enviable position of using the advance notice to prep their spokespeople so they could be ready at the microphone outside the court following Alitos reading of the majority opinion. They could shape the public narrative, a distinct advantage over their opponents. When word of our campaign eventually broke in theNew York Times, Justice Alito responded, I never detected any effort on the part of the Wrights to obtain confidential information or to influence anything that I did in either an official or private capacity, and I would have strongly objected if they had done so. He added, I have no knowledge of any project that they allegedly undertook for Faith and Action. Gayle Wright denied obtaining or passing along any such information. Steve Green declined to comment to theTimes, and his mother told the paper he hadnt been notified in advance. Lets just say this is not how I remember what had happened.Rev. Rob Schenck speaks to PBSIt took yearsfor the scales to fall from my eyes. A major turning point occurred when I took a leave of absence from Faith and Action to pursue a late-in-life doctorate. Part of my research involved the German Christian movement of the 1930s, which supported the Nazi Party. One of the most respected Bible scholars of that period, Paul Althaus, declared Hitlers ascent to the chancellorship to be a gift and miracle from God. I began to suspect that we evangelicals were similarly allowing our faith to be co-opted for political purposes. Devastating consequences seemed inevitable for evangelicalism and for our country. These fears were reinforced when I attended a tribute banquet for Pat Robertson around 2010. Virtually every evangelical luminary was there. When Robertson introduced his guest of honor, Donald J. Trump, I was shocked. In Bible college, my preaching instructor had suggested that the New York playboy was a perfect illustration for what it meant tonotlive as a Christian. I asked a friend of Pats why Trump was there. They both were members of the billionaires club, he explained. Besides, he may make a good president someday. Trump worked the room, filled with the biggest names on the religious right, garnering hearty applause. When Robertson introduced his guest of honor, Donald J. Trump, I was shocked. In Bible college, my preaching instructor had suggested that the New York playboy was a perfect illustration for what it meant tonotlive as a Christian.Another reckoning came after working with Abigail Disney on a film about American evangelicals love affair with firearms. The Armor of Lightwon an Emmy, but many of my colleagues labeled me asellout to liberal gun grabbers. Pastors told me my appearance in the film created tensions in their congregations. When I visited one church as a guest preacher, my host forbade me from mentioning guns in his pulpit. I have 50 armed people sitting out there every Sunday, he warned, and I dont know what theyll do if they get mad at you. He gave me a wry smile. Seriously.Meanwhile, as a Republican presidential candidate, Trump displayed pomposity and an ugly denunciation of the most vulnerable, both of which are diametrically opposed to the Christian virtues of humility, kindness, love for neighbors, and care for strangers. In June 2016, when his campaign invited scores of my closest friends and longtime colleagues tomeetwith him in New York, I declined. My contacts texted me from the gathering, reporting on the deal they were striking with him. Trump essentially promised to appoint anti-abortion federal judges and Supreme Court justices in exchange for our constituents loyal support. James Dobson, founder of the enormously influential Focus on the Family, assuredattendees that Trump was a baby Christian. When I arrived at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Trumps nomination was a fait accompli. Sitting at a luncheon table with evangelical leaders, I expressed bewilderment over our support of him. Repeatedly, I was assured he would advance our cause. After Trumps acceptance speech, I decided to leave the fold.It took two years to extract myself. I dismantled the organization I had spent more than two decades building, walking away from a multimillion-dollar donor base. I called countless people to explain why I was leaving the movement Id helped lead. I reached out to others to beg their pardon for the harm I had inflicted. I repented in prayer for my errors and the damage they caused. Then, I privately dedicated the rest of my life to doing as much repair as possible.YouTube screenshot Rev. Rob Schenck speaks to CBS News Following the insurrection of January 6, when Christian banners, Bibles, and prayers in Jesus nameappearedin the assault on the Capitol, I felt even greater urgency in warning my fellow evangelicals of the grave danger Trump and his MAGA cult posed to Christianity and US democracy. My change of course so late in life has been painful, disorienting, and costly. Besides losing decades-long friendships and enduring menacing threats, my wife and I have faced a significantly reduced income. Ive even driven Uber to cover household expenses. One night, I picked up an organizer of the National Prayer Breakfast, an event in which I had once played a significant role. I was wearing a mask and said little, but then, with trepidation, I realized I would be dropping him at the home of a congressman I had worked with closely for more than 20 years. When my passenger got out, I was relieved to have gone unrecognized. Still, Ive never questioned the decisions that brought me to that moment. In my third conversion, I realized that when religion is placed at the service of a political party, it corrupts both. To claim that one political figure uniquely represents Gods will for the body politic is a form of anti-Christian idolatry. To elevate one set of spiritual beliefs above another and do it by force of law removes a nonnegotiable tenet of evangelical faithfree will. We are born again when wechooseto believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, not when were forced to do so.Because it is immoral, I believe Christian nationalism is inevitably doomed. But in the meantime, the pain, suffering, and injury it will inflict will be enormousjust consider women facing difficult pregnancies, trans children seeking care, librarians attacked for certain books. We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit. We want to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theater, and in the pressin short, we want to burn out the poison of immorality, which has entered into our whole life and culture as a result of liberal excess. This may sound familiarmaybe some overheated Republican talking points. The most epic trans love story is streaming right now and it's a literal godsend
To describe the plot of Kaos in simple terms is quite a challenge; its complex and multilayered with dozens of characters all intersecting in fascinating and complicated ways. A big part of the enjoyment of watching is seeing the way the series reveals these connections throughout the season, but at a high level its a modern reinterpretation of Greek myth.Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) has had a pretty good run as the top god of Olympus, but one day he wakes up to find a new wrinkle on his face which sends him into a spiral of existential dread and fear of mortality (relatable). As his paranoia increases that the prophecy of his end is approaching, he becomes increasingly erratic. It doesnt help that theres dissension among the divine ranks of his family, and on Earth. There is a shift coming, a shift toward, well, chaos and there are many many moving parts, and many players both knowingly and unknowingly involved. Like I said, its complicated. But its also genius. And so very, very unapologetically queer. The writing is brilliant, witty, surprising, and clever. The cast is, well, worthy of a tale of the gods, and visually it is visionary. My gods, if you arent watching it, youre missing out on some truly stellar storytelling and one of the most compelling and steamy trans love stories this year. One of the players in this complex web is Caeneus (Misia Butler), a trans man adrift in purgatory, with the weight of a painful betrayal on his back. His job in the afterlife is to guide the dead through a frame to their final reward, regenerating and coming back to life again, reincarnated. Its a profoundly lonely existence; that is until he meets Riddy (Aurora Perrineau), a recently deceased woman who also has an important role to play in the prophecy. She's found herself trapped in purgatory after her husband steals the coin from her lips meant to pay Charon (Ramon Tikaram) to help her cross the River Styx. Riddy and Caeneus share an instant connection and one that blossoms into romance. However, because this is a Greek tragedy, things are complicated by the fact that her husband, Orpheus (Killian Scott), is tearing apart the fabric of existence to make his way to her in the underworld. If elements of that story and the characters name are ringing bells, its because the shows creator, Charlie Covell (The End of the F***ing World), lifted and reinterpreted them from classic Greek myth. Take the story of Caneaus from classical literature, he was born female but was later transformed by Poseidon into a male. The effect of his inclusion in Kaos is subtle and poignantly radical because it underscores that trans people have not only existed since the dawn of time and storytelling, but that they are heroic, essential beings who are woven into the very fabric of humanity and fate. They are not a fad, not a modern anomaly, Kaos says, transness is core, it is essential, it is humanity.None of this is lost on Butler, who admits this is why hes always seen himself in and been drawn to the Greek classics and their innate queerness. Its always been something that I have been obsessed with for as long as I can remember, he tells PRIDE. Even in the very simple translations and iterations that you get as a child, you get a sense of this very queer perspective of the world that they have created through the myths. I think Charlie called the show Kaos because of reading in Ovids Metamorphoses a line about the world being begat out of chaos. The metamorphoses in themselves are all about change and the different ways in which we change and flow between different states. That at its core is a very queer concept. That comes through all throughout the series, where not only do queer characters and actors abound in this world, but Kaos infuses implicitly queer culture into its world-building, whether its making the Valkyries a gang of dykes on bikes, or populating the world with gay and pansexual romances were here and were queer. Its not just Caeneus story thats so woven into the fabric, but also all of The Fates (Suzy Eddie Izzard, Ch, and Sam Buttery). They are even more arcane and more woven into the very fabric of reality and being. Theyre all trans as well, Butler points out.Not only does this make for a more rich, compelling world, but it also means the show is able to do something all too rare: It doesnt hang all its trans representation on one character, dooming them to fail at giving audiences a broader view of the community. It also lifts some of the oppressive weight of that responsibility off the back of one actor. I was only part of a wider whole, and I didnt have that impetus or pressure to represent anything too holistically, because I could only ever represent a part of it, says Butler.Instead, Butler was free to play a far more rich and complex character for whom transness is only one part of his being. Its a role that the actor says is reflective of his own story. Im not someone who tends to go stealth a lot, I cant really anymore. Im pretty much open to the world, says Butler. Im very proud of being trans, and I think that theres a lot of power that I have found in it. Its been really tough at times, but its also been incredibly empowering, and I think that thats what we see with Caeneus is that his transness isnt ignored. Its not just dangled and tokenized. Its really integrated into who he is as a person. But it also doesnt take center stage. Its his love story with Riddy, his navigation of his mum and her betrayal and his death and just being in Purgatory and his dog, we have all these threads that we get to explore. As an actor, it was such a privilege to see it done with a trans role.Hes so very right: Its thrilling and moving to see a character like Caeneus being brought to life by an actor like Butler, because along with the simple pleasures of watching a good yarn unwind you can see the future of trans storytelling being written with every scene, every plot point, every trope-and-trap-defying moment. Falling in love with the character of Caeneus is not just possible, its inevitable, because Butler succeeds in infusing him with an aching pathos and a dreamy sad boy allure. Hes sweet, pure, and his attractiveness is gravitational. All of which is to say its not a stretch to believe that Riddy would not only be drawn to him but feel an instant cosmic connection, even in purgatory. Butler credits that crackling chemistry to a surprising demand from the director that he and Perrineau avoid one another until it was time to film their scene. When we shot that first scene on my first day on the bench where were kind of properly getting to know each other. That is very early days, [for] Misia and Aurora getting to know each other, too, Butler reveals. I hope that that translates as kind of that bubbly first chemistry because it really felt so exciting and special to be acting alongside someone as talented and beautiful and lovely as her.The ploy worked, and what comes across on screen are exactly those early moments of attraction, insecurity, magnetism, and eventually connection. Its sweet and its sexy and it feels excitingly like a paradigm shift in the way we see trans masc men presented on screen. Its really very revolutionary to see a transmasculine person be seen in this way and to have a sexual relationship with someone as well, agrees Butler.Sometimes trans masculine characters can be kind of desexualized, and I have felt really empowered by it. I really would love to do a rom-com. Im so obsessed with rom-coms and with romance movies, Ive always been a hopeless romantic. So to have the opportunity to play someone who is, yeah, deeply in love with someone in a way that I really resonated with, with Caeneus and the way that he falls in love, it felt really familiar. That probably also helps with the verisimilitude. After all, a major element of the series requires that you believe that two men would be willing to destroy the fabric of the universe for the love of one woman which makes Perrineau so perfect for the role. For Aurora Perrineau, we would! laughs Butler. That said, the question were left with is: Where do we go from here? The first season ends with a question of what happens next. While Butler cant reveal where Caeneus story will go next, one thing we both agree on is that were hopeful and praying to all the gods we get to find out.If you havent started streaming Kaos, theres no better time than right now. This show is doing the thing we crave: offering complex, exciting, boundary-breaking queer and trans characters, being heroic, villainous, knowing, and clueless. Its utterly, thrillingly, human even when they just so happen to be gods.
