WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMBlack MAGA activist says MTG called him in the N-wordOn September 12, former Black Voices for Trump director Harrison Floyd alleged that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called him the n-word in private. Floyd was responding to Greenes takedown of far-right activist Laura Loomer, who posted anti-Indian comments about Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. Despite her own history of inflammatory rhetoric, Greene called Loomers comments extremely racist and said they do not represent MAGA Republicans or President Trump. [Marjorie Taylor Greene] has no room to call anyone a racist, or talk about what the MAGA community stands for when she refers me as a Ni**er in private, Floyd wrote on X. She has never publicly supported me, and tried to save her own skin. Our country many serious issues, yet anytime [MTG] is in the spotlight its always an issue of race / racism. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMUnmarried GOP candidate tries to pawn off friends family as his own wife & kidsAs Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance faces continued controversy over his outrageous claim that childless cat ladies are running the country, a childless, single man running for one of Virginias U.S. House seats who lives alone with his dog has enlisted a woman and her children to pose as his family. Derrick Anderson, a former Green Beret running for an open seat in Virginias Seventh District, posted footage to his YouTube channel posing with a woman and her three daughters in what looks like a photo that might be used for an annual holiday card, according to The New York Times. WWW.PRIDE.COMKit Connor and Joe Locke painting each other is the CUTEST thing on the internetToday is a good day to be a Heartstopper fan. Most of us are eagerly anticipating the upcoming third season, which is slated to have the show's first sex scene, and we'd be lying if we said we weren't at least a little excited about that.Ahead of the upcoming October 3 release of the season, fans got a double dose of excitement in both a 2-minute clip posted from the season as well as an interview with the main actors, Kit Connor and Joe Locke, doing a painting challenge for British Vogue that included a round of them attempting to paint each other. (@) The clip of the show comes from the first few minutes of the season premiere, which see Locke's character, Charlie, initially having a conversation with himself practicing how to tell Connor's character, Nick, that he's in love with him and hopes he feels the same way.The clip ends with Nick showing up.In the painting interview video with British Vogue, Locke says of Heartstopper season three that we can expect "more sadness and more horniness," with Connor admitting that his first impression of Locke was that he had "very interesting shaped thumbs," with Locke countering that his first impression of Connor was that he was "smaller than I thought he would be." (@) As the two go back and forth with various challenges throughout the interview, two things become clear:The first is that these two are right where they belong as actors; neither one of them will have art hanging in th eLouvre any time soon. The second is that there's no two better main actors for Heartstopper, and their chemistry is something we could all hope to find with someone in life, whether just as friends or as something more.We also know we're excited to see how the upcoming season of Heartstopper will play out, though we're not completely sure our heartstrings are actually ready for the emotional tugging we're inevitably about to endure.Regardless, check out the full painting challenge interview with Locke and Connor below, then keep scrolling for some of our favorite reactions to how adorable these two are. The plan included mandatory pronoun recognition, drag queen story hour, and boys participating in girls sports. School choice defeats the woke mind virus, DeAngelis wrote. The Advocate noted that DeAngelis reportedly didnt attend the Rescue The Republic conference inWashington, D.C., last Sunday where he had been scheduled to speak alongside other anti-LGBTQ+ extremists like Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice, Charlie Kirk, and Jordan Peterson.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 59 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMWill Ferrell & Harper Steele insisted that Netflix release their documentary before Election DayWill Ferrell and Harper Steele wanted their new documentary, Will & Harper, to be available to stream ahead of the 2024 election. The film, which follows the long-time friends on a road trip across the U.S. former Saturday Night Live head writer Steeles first such trip since coming out as transgender had its world premiere in January at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and was acquired by Netflix the following month. Related Will Ferrell says transphobia stems from not being confident or safe with yourself I dont know why trans people are meant to be threatening to me as a cis male. As Ferrell told Variety at Will & Harpers recent Los Angeles premiere, he and Steele were adamant that the streamer debut the film prior to election day. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today When we sat down with Netflix we made it clear that we wanted this out before the election, the actor said. We wanted it to have enough runway for people to get to see it and hopefully start having important discussions in their living rooms.Following a limited theatrical release, Netflix premiered Will & Harper on September 27, a little over five weeks before the November 5 election.Weve heard from people who say they cant wait to see this with friends and family who maybe dont share the same viewpoint and theyre looking forward to watching it all together, Ferrell told the outlet. Hopefully, it could slowly chip away at some of that. In a recent interview with The Independent, director Josh Greenbaum explained that everyone involved with the film was aware that it would be perceived as political considering the wave of Republican-backed anti-trans legislation that has swept the country in recent years. But at its core, its a very pure, simple story of two friends, Greenbaum said of the doc. I think more hearts and minds can be changed and affected by that. In the climate were in now, if you smell an agenda, or you sniff out that someone is trying to convince you of anything, you lose half the audience. In no sense were we trying to avoid politics, but it didnt feel central to the story we were telling. The film, which has been lauded by critics, is largely focused on Ferrell and Steeles friendship but also explores the former SNL writers discomfort traveling through red states and visiting the rural dive bars she used to love as an out trans woman. For the most part, the pair are greeted warmly by the strangers they meet on the road in the film, though they both grapple with how much Ferrells fame acts as a buffer. For instance, early in the doc, Ferrell and Steele attend an Indiana Pacers basketball game in Indianapolis, where they encounter Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb (R), who is eager to get some face-time with the Anchorman star.I will say that when you walk into a bar or basketball game with Will Ferrell, people tend to want to be kind, Steele said during a recent appearance on The Late Show with Seth Meyers. We have an uncomfortable moment with the governor of Indiana, who is not very kind to trans people, but he needed to take a picture with Will so bad that he dropped all of his principles. And that, to me, is what Will does for me.As Steele alluded, in 2023, Holcomb signed several anti-trans bills, including one that banned gender-affirming care for Indiana minors and another that banned gender-affirming surgery for incarcerated individuals in the state.Holcomb has not commented on his interaction with Ferrell and Steele or on his brief appearance in the film. But as Steele told Meyers, In general I do believe people want to be kind. And its just the news and the press and the politicians that are polarizing us. WWW.PRIDE.COMMatt Bellassai dishes on the glorious return of Whine About ItSure, shared interests are a great way to bond with someone new but have ever tried sharing things you loathe? Now thats how you forge real connections! It was certainly how I formed my completely one-sided, parasocial friendship with host Matt Bellassai back in 2015 when his Whine About It series was (in this writers humble opinion) the peak of wit at BuzzFeed. For the uninitiated, on Whine About It, Bellassai would guzzle some wine while sitting in the office and then unleash a glorious rant of epic proportion against whatever topic was currently drawing his ire. Mornings, roommates, weddings, nature, his friends nothing and no one was safe from his glorious takedowns, and it was a delight to behold. Since leaving BuzzFeed, Bellassai has struck out on his own pursuing various solo projects including the Unhappy Hour podcast, which ran for six seasons, his stand-up tour, and the Diss and Tell podcast which he still co-hosts alongside Sydney Battle. But thats not allL hes also taken to TikTok to share his disgruntled musing as well as reviewing the A Court of Thorns and Roses book series, or, as he calls it, the fairies who make boom boom books. His baking show Baked Baking is exactly what it sounds like: he gets stoned and cracks open the oven, and its honestly delightful. Despite that busy schedule. Bellassai announced today that he is making long-time fans wishes come true. Hes going back where it all began, for one night, with a special performance of Whine About It at the Helium Comedy Club in Atlanta.PRIDE caught up with Bellassai to chat about why now is the perfect time for a good old-fashioned whine sesh. We also discussed actual wine, his forays into TikTok, and all the things getting on his nerves right now, of which there are many. In other words, he had us howling. See on InstagramAt last, Whine About It is coming back for one night! Why now?I was just rewatching some of my old videos, and honestly, it was different than I remembered it in my recollection. I feel like I have become more high energy, shockingly in my old age. I was 25 when I started Whine About It, and Im 34 now so its been, you know, eight, nine years and I was a lot more, dare I say, demure. I have this show thats coming up in Atlanta, and I wanted to use this as a chance to bring back Whine About It for a night. Have a lot of fun with it. Have this hit of nostalgia. But also the spirit is right for the moment. Everything sucks right now. Its election season. Everybody needs an outlet to bang their head against the wall for a little bit. Wine consumption is up. Complaining is up. So it feels right. You have been doing stand-up and there is wine present, so Im curious, how is this format going to be different from what youre doing on the road currently? My stand-up hour tends to be a little more autobiographical. Theres a little more of my life stories, stuff like that. This is going to be getting back to just ranting about those evergreen topics that everybody can agree that we hate. See on InstagramI know you dont want to give away all your topics, but I do hope that there is an extended section on JD Vance and Trump, because I would love to hear you go in on so many things that they have been up to. I could probably do an entire hour just whining about him and Trump and it is Georgia, so you know, its not, Its not an insignificant place.Laughter and coming together feel really important to do right now. I completely agree. I always say, my ethos has always been optimistic pessimism. I like complaining about stuff thats been my brand now for quite a while but its never defeatist, its never nihilistic. Its always like, were laughing and were still hopeful. There can still be joy and we can still have fun. It doesnt have to be completely gallows humor and completely dark. See on InstagramSo on the subject of wine, Im curious, are you bringing your own, or will you be enjoying a local delicacy when you are in Atlanta? So the secret that I havent kept secret is that I know almost nothing about wine. I am, like, far from a wine connoisseur. People often ask me what my opinions on wine are, and what my favorites are. And Im like, Im chugging it. Im not the person to ask. Im far from a sommelier. So, a lot of times when I go to these comedy clubs. Im just like, Give me whatever you got. Ill take you to get red wine on tap. Its a gamble. Its always a risk. But Im not going to be casually enjoying this. Im going to be pounding it back while I scream about something. The way that you suffer for your art is so admirable.Im just that selfless. Speaking of selflessness, can we talk about your TikTok series Baked Baking where you get baked and, well, bake something? I am genuinely impressed that everything you make actually turns out kinda great!Thank you! I actually think of myself as a fairly decent baker. Ive been baking for a while. It was really a pandemic-inspired hobby that started and I have just gotten pretty okay at following directions.See on InstagramWell as a luminary in food Tiktok, Id love to get your take on Logan and the cucumber recipe craze.Oh, my God. I want to know how many fingers that man is responsible for chopping off. I feel like Ive seen just as many videos of people going to the emergency room as I have of people successfully making a cucumber salad.See this is the problem that I run into. I dont like being a hater. I dont want to yuck anybodys yum. That is the philosophy: If you like it, thats fine. That being said, Ive never once in my life thought I desperately need to eat an entire cucumber. Never. That has never occurred to me. I dont want that, and yet, I see 20 videos daily of that twink making cucumber salad.I love it! OK, lets end with a very important question: Whats annoying you right now? The obsession that people have with slime is so baffling to me. Specifically, slime that is made to look like edible food. I dont know if youve seen this, it is deeply upsetting to me, both on a sensual level and also on an intellectual level. I hate it so much. These people will make very elaborate tableaux of a full meal, but everything is slime. And then theyll make these, like ASMR videos of them picking up what looks like a delicious piece of cinnamon toast, and then they crumble it up, and it is so infuriating to me.Honestly? Same. Make food, food again.Tickets for Whine About It are on sale now. Lets all buy them so he will take it on tour and I will selfishly get to see the show live, too.0 Comments 0 Shares 46 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMMaisy Stella reveals why she came out as something other than a lesbian in 'My Old Ass'The question, What advice would you give to your older or younger self? is central to the new comedy My Old Ass, from writer/director Megan Park. But the film in which Maisy Stella (Nashville) and Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation, Agatha All Along) play younger and older versions of the lead character Elliot, also explores what it means to identify as one label under the LGBTQ+ umbrella only to discover ones sexuality is more expansive.Keep up with the latest in LGBTQ+ news and politics. Sign up for The Advocate's email newsletter. It just had to be a genuine self-exploration and a bit of confusion. I also think labels are tricky. I grew up in a very lucky way and a way that I know is not everyone's experience, Stella says. I really was never pressured to put a label on myself, and I was always what I am. I was always open and I was always queer, but I was never forced into anything. Maisy Stella and Aubrey Plaza in My Old AssMarni Grossman Amazon Content Services LLCMy Old Ass opens on Elliots final summer at home on her familys rural cranberry farm before she heads to college in Toronto. She hangs out on the lake with her best friends, Ruthie (Maddie Ziegler) and Ro (Kerrice Brooks), hooks up with the cute young woman from town on the regular, and endures her younger brothers. Elliot is proudly out as gay or a lesbian at home and among friends until she meets the guy her older self warned her about Chad (Wednesdays Percy Hynes White). Its a boon that the actors playing the character are both queer, lending heart and authenticity to the story where the one thing Elliot was sure she had figured out was her sexuality. While Elliots burgeoning attraction to Chad is new and curious, its not nearly as strange as the night Elliot summons her older self while shes high on shrooms during a campout with Ruthie and Ro. That 35-ish version of Elliot arrives replete with Plazas sardonic world-weariness, and just as young Elliot gleans wisdom from the person she becomes, Stella calls working with Plaza not just a learning experience, but a masterclass.Aubrey is just such an artist where she really does just have this thing about her that is just so undeniable. And Ive always been such a huge fan of her, Stella says, adding that Plaza is genuinely brilliant and funny. Maisy Stella in My Old Ass Marni Grossman Amazon Content Services LLCI learned so much from her from filming. I was so taken with her as a scene partner, I was like, Oh, OK. That's how you do it. She was just very reassuring. She would, before any scene, [ask] What do you need from me? What can I do to help you with this? she says.Though Elliot resists her attraction to Chad unsure of why elder Elliot insists she steer clear of him the real reason arrives late in the film and is a powerful twist that highlights Plazas dramatic chops she eventually allows herself to feel something, and she comes out in reverse to her friends and family.Ive always found labels to be a little bit intimidating closing yourself into something when Im young and Im changing and growing. I was excited to play a character that was just being honest with themselves, just allowing themselves to change and to just explore and be genuine and honest, Stella says. Courtesy Amazon Content Services LLCAs for what Stella would want to ask her older self if she could, she thinks she has a good idea. I feel like my mom is my future, so every time I look at her Im like, I am going to turn into you, she says, adding that its comforting. So I feel like I have a future self walking around and I know where I'm headed.Watch the full interview with Stella above. My Old Ass is in theaters now.0 Comments 0 Shares 46 Views 0 Reviews

Vance, was interviewed by Tucker Carlson just days after the disgraced talk show host praised a Holocaust denialist. Days later, Vance spoke at a rally in Pennsylvania organized by a preacher who claims Vice President Kamala Harris practices witchcraft and that democracy should be abolished in favor of right-wing Christian dominion over all aspects of culture and politics under which queer rights would be banned.LGBTQ Nationchatted with Chandler via Zoom from his home office about everything from the beauty of gay life in London to the threats to democracy posed by the Heritage Foundations Project 2025.Provided Author Daniel Chandler LGBTQ Nation: How did you come to write Free and Equal?Daniel Chandler: Ive had an unusual route. My first degree is in history. Then I studied political philosophy. I spent time working in government and public policy. Now Im in the Economics Department, and my mission as an academic is to bridge some of these disciplines that have grown apart to think seriously about what a truly just society would look like.Where did you work in public policy?I worked at the Prime Minister Strategy Unit. That was my first job, and I spent a couple of years in the Cabinet Office, a bit like the White House in British terms. I worked at think tanks, then moved to the London School of Economics to get my PhD. How did that lead to the book? The book is a political intervention, not an academic one. And the goal was to set out a progressive vision of the sort missing from mainstream political discourse. Progressives have a lack of intellectual reference points. The new right under Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan could look to thinkers like Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek in the 80s for confidence. Its not apparent to progressives today where they should look for similar inspiration at this moment when the world is crying out for something big and constructive and new. And thats where John Rawls comes in.What is your queer social justice reference point? James Baldwin is a major inspiration. He fits very much within the tradition. He put forward a kind of progressive queer tradition that embraces universal values of freedom, justice, and equality while opposing the idea that society should be about the advancement of one group over another. Before we delve into universalism, tell me about your particular life in London.I live with my partner of nearly 13 years. I love cooking, so theres a lot of hosting. But I also love Londons queer scene. There are some great bars we frequent. We live near a pond with a history as a very queer-friendly space. And I also recently discovered a fantastic queer nude sunbathing space. It has an easygoing, chill, relaxed atmosphere. How would John Rawls feel about a queer nude sunbathing? He wrote his famous book in the 70s. How did he feel about queer life? Well, we wouldnt have even called it queer at the time. It would have been gay and lesbian. He wrote almost nothing about our issues. But he was a fundamentally liberal individual, and I think he would have taken it for granted that his philosophy would provide a vigorous defense of the freedoms that the queer community needs to live their lives according to their own beliefs and in their own way. And I think he would instinctively have celebrated all the different spaces the queer community created for himself. He would have been pleased.Provided John Rawls And thats why he would be proud of us. As a student at Vassar College in New York in the mid-1980s, I struggled with coming out. It was a hard time: gay-bashing was an epidemic. HIV was a crisis, killing thousands while the Reagan administration turned a blind eye. In 1986, the conservative Supreme Court ruled that states could criminalize consensual same-sex sodomy. I thought, What kind of world am I coming out into? It was ugly.Living across the hall from me was this kid with the same name, Chris, who was out. He was flamboyant and fabulous, and he understood my struggle. I kept getting confused on campus with him. People would say to me, Oh, youre that out gay kid. But I wasnt ready for the label. Then, I read A Theory of Justice in my political philosophy class. Rawls helped teach me that allowing people space to be who they are helped everyone. Universal freedoms mattered, not my particular situation. Gradually, I wanted to be like the other Chrisinstead of fearing him. I didnt have that personality but could see courage and confidence. The concept of the veil of ignorance was easy to grasp. It helped me realize that ideas and philosophy made a difference; it wasnt just academic. As a fellow gay man, Im moved by that story. Philosophical concepts are compelling and more powerful than we imagine. They structure how we think about ourselves and our social position meaningfully and are the raw material of public discourse. How so?In moments like this, when people struggle to talk across divisions, its more important than ever to step back and try to find some kind of source of agreement, some framework within which we can have reasonable debate. Philosophy is fundamental to the spirit of rules. What was your own coming out experience?I also feared the more overt aspects of queer culture. And I feel like thats been my journey, coming to love and embrace being gay in every way. Where Rawls has come into my queer life is in giving me a way of thinking about the politics of being gay and how we should go about defending freedoms while showing respect for people with views we disagree with. How do we draw on Rawls to defeat reactionary developments in America, such as the Heritage Foundations Project 2025, the framework for attacks on us in a second Trump administration? MAGA is pretty open about replacing democracy and the rule of law with autocracy or, more likely, kleptocracy. The Trump agenda has moved from vague rhetoric to quite substantive anti-LGBTQ commitments in Project 2025. Having the right arguments to defend our freedoms is more important than ever. And by right, I mean morally correct and most likely to persuade. How do you break through that with wavering Trump supporters because they, too, are going to suffer when democracy suffers? Trump or Hungarys Viktor Orban benefit only themselves. They dont care about the rest of us.Majorities in the U.S. and most advanced Western democracies still support wide-ranging rights and freedoms. The extreme positions taken by MAGA are not representative. Thats also not a cause for complacency. For the first time in decades polls show support for various measures of equality going backward. Were beginning to see anti-trans and anti-gay political rhetoric shape public opinion in a worrying way.The idea that politics is a battle for one group to impose their religious or moral perspective on the rest of the population is gaining ground. In some academic literature this is called post-liberalism, and in this we are seeing a kind of an outright rejection of fundamental liberal principles, encouraging people to live according to their own beliefs. We are losing the idea that its not role of the state to impose any particular moral or religious order on its citizens, that we can all live according to our own morals and that helps everyone thrive. That idea was pretty settled for decades. Its scary that its shifting. How should we respond?Part of the answer is to is to double down on liberalism. In the case of marriage equality or LGBT rights, we are not asking people to give up their religious beliefs. Were not asking everybody to come to gay pride. We might campaign for that in the wider culture, but we recognize that its not the role of the state to tell people what they should believe. Freedoms are not grounded in telling people what they must believe or how to behave, but in enforcing everyones freedom to live according to their own beliefs. We need to persuade people who dont necessarily identify with queer culture that they should nonetheless support these basic individual freedoms. And we do see that there are people who disapprove of gay relationships but still think that people should be free to enjoy them. We need to make sure that we include the broadest set of people in thinking that part of their responsibility is stand up and defend these freedoms.Christian nationalists want abortion and sodomy to be illegal. They want to ban books and porn. They want to funnel their sectarian religious beliefs through a Christian legal system, doing away with the separation of church and state. Yet the liberalism Rawls advocated and the Founders advocated applies to religious minorities too. Christian nationalists assume that their version of Christianity is going to be the majority, that they can impose it even on religious minorities. But they would quickly find is not the case, and they would be on the losing side of a different religious majority. Anyone who thinks the state should impose a particular model of Christian values on American society is at odds with the deepest, most cherished principles that lie right at the heart of the American political tradition that they sit outside. This is not a left-right distinction. Liberalism exists for them too, and they too have benefited from it historically by being able to preach and practice their religion without government interference. In fact, they benefited from this liberalism, these civil protections, well before the LGBT community did. That argument is a powerful way to try to build common ground between groups that might seem to have very little in common.Delighted last night to present the 2024 Voltaire medal to @dan_chandler A very worthy recipient, his talk on "Free and Equal" was a stirring manifesto for political action to put into practice the theories of John Rawls. If you haven't yet read Daniel's book, I urge you to! pic.twitter.com/DHy7rTAQaG Andrew Copson (@andrewcopson) September 11, 2024But they are using liberal freedoms to attack it.Christian nationalists weaponize liberal arguments in a way in order to attack LGBT rights. They use the liberal commitment to religious freedom to undermine freedom and equality. The queer community sometimes sees that weaponization of liberal arguments and thinks the solution is to ditch liberalism. Because if liberalism can justify religious people refusing to serve their queer customers, then whats the point in liberalism? That would be a mistake. My book is trying to make sure that progressives hold onto the liberal tradition, because its in that tradition still that the strongest arguments lie for the things that they really care about and at the same time show Christians who might not feel comfortable with gay relationships that the basic principle on which LGBT rights depends is also at the heart of their own freedom. In fact, even conservative justices like Anthony Kennedy have been open to our arguments. Sodomy laws eventually were overturned; marriage equality won the day. In Bostock, a Trump-appointed justice upheld trans rights under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Weve been able to make progress within the electoral system as well. The right to speech, the right to protest and assemble, these constitutional guarantees have served us well even if progress has been too slow for too many of us. And think about what Stonewall produced, a massive worldwide Pride movement that thrives half a century later, liberating untold millions. But some people who marched in early Prides lost jobs, were rejected by family, were subjected to violence. Perhaps we have lost track of how hard won out victories have been, how much we have sacrificed to gain them. Yes, and in the wake of book bans and dont say gay laws, we are seeing what happens when free speech is no longer a consensus value. We need to double down on these arguments that have led to historic progress.Do legal arguments about leaving us alone get a bit defensive though? Shouldnt we be reminding Americans about all the great things we bring to the table? Our communities make the world better in so many ways. Before this MAGA backlash, there was a growing sense that you could learn from the queer community, from the trans community, about gender and about sexuality. Straight people felt liberated by our idea about relationships and family, the benefits of living authentically rather than how others want you to live. The privacy argument doesnt have to be a purely defensive one. We frame it in a positive way. Its about everyone having the freedom to live according to beliefs. You can celebrate a society in which people are free to be different. We defend freedom of conscience. People can come to their own conclusions about the kinds of relationships they want to have, the meaning of life, the nature of the universe, and thats huge positive good for a society even when we disagree. Were speaking at a time when American politics has been unsettled by the Harris-Walz ticket. She hails from San Francisco and lived in the midst of a big queer community. She is mixed race and speaks the language of intersectional inclusion, the language of queer equality. Walz sponsored his high schools gay-straight alliance and, as governor, made Minnesota a trans sanctuary state. Its the gayest ticket in American history, no doubt. My instinct is that Harris is very much in the Rawls tradition. I watched her first campaign ad, released after Biden stepped aside. And I suppose I was struck by how the closing message of this ad was basically Kamala Harris is the anti-Trump. That represents continuity with the basic electoral strategy of the Democratic Party towards this election up to now, which is to try to build the broadest anti-Trump coalition. But this doesnt set out a constructive, positive agenda of the America that voters want to see. The anti-Trump approach may well be enough to win this election, and I can see the logic behind it. But it will not enough to defeat Trumpism in a lasting way. That will require mainstream progressive parties and politicians to set out a compelling vision of what a genuinely fair and just society would look like.My hope is that this book can help provide the raw material for making that kind of vision a reality.Chris Bull, the author of Perfect Enemies: The Battle Between the Religious Right and the Gay Movement, is the editorial director of Q.DigitalSubscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 37 Views 0 Reviews

This thought experiment is what the great American philosopher John Rawls dubbed the Veil of Ignorance in his 1971 book A Theory of Justice. Building on the work of thinkers such as John Stuart Mill and John Locke, Rawls drew on a deep respect for privacy and individualism along with a desire for economic equality of opportunity, a good half-century before the right wing had begun to dismantle these democratic ideals. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMLGBTQ+ History Month is celebrated around the world. It all started with one man & a dream.Thirty years ago this month on the evening of October 3, 1994 a few dozen students at the University of MissouriSt. Louis gathered inside a small auditorium to kick off a film festival to celebrate the first Lesbian and Gay History Month, as it was called at the time.Ten films were screened on four successive Monday nights documentaries like Before Stonewall (1984), Silent Pioneers (1985), and West Coast Crones: A Glimpse into the Lives of Nine Old Lesbians (1991; as well as feature films like Parting Glances (1986) and the closing-night special, The Boys in the Band (1970). Related Joe Biden made queer history twice this week PLUS: LGBTQ+ activists are gettin fired up and getting down! Back then, LGBTQ+ history was largely still closeted. We hoped in successive years that this new month would be recognized at secondary schools, in higher education, and in communities nationwide. That night, however, we didnt know if anyone would even join us or if the entire concept of an LGBTQ+ History Month was doomed to failure. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Flier for the University of MissouriSt. Louis film festival to honor the first ever LGBTQ History Month. Provided by Rodney Wilson. In addition to being a graduate student, I was a young high school social studies teacher in the St. Louis suburbs in the early 1990s. Queer people did not exist in our lessons. My late-1980s American history textbook an 800-page survey of the history of the United States from indigenous America to the Cold War confrontation with the Soviet Union entirely omitted queer history. The world outside my classroom spun with breaking LGBTQ+ news Ryan White, Allen Schindler, the 1993 March on Washington, marriage equality, Dont Ask Dont Tell, the film Philadelphia, AIDS, Pedro Zamora, electoral politics, and a decade that saw entertainment come out of the closet, according to Entertainment Weekly. Yet little of this was discussed in high schools. Righteous unrestThe first history month in the world, the origin of all history months, was called Negro History Week when it was first observed in February 1926. It was founded by Dr. Carter Woodson, who spent his life advocating for the transformative power of African American history. The son of a formerly enslaved mother and father, he was a historian and scholar who believed knowing the history that preceded ones birth frees the mind and liberates the spirit. As the 20th century progressed, particularly after the Second World War, a wave of righteous unrest arose among marginalized peoples all over the world. Colonial yokes were cast aside. Second-class citizens demanded first-class standing. Multiple civil rights movements were born. Previously unstudied groups began to demand inclusion in the classroom, in textbooks, in governments, in museums; and one identity group after another adopted Dr. Woodsons viewpoint that their history is as significant as that of the majoritys and these newly awakened groups adapted his techniques.Latinos in California founded National Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968. Asian and Pacific Islander Americans inaugurated their own heritage month a few years later. The first Womens History Week was organized in 1978. Indigenous groups in the United States claimed November as Native American Heritage Month in 1986.Many others have since followed Irish, Deaf, Jewish, Arab, and Italian Americans all have their own history months now. These history months are each communitys opportunity to place its history on the calendar, to jostle their way into the conversation about personal, group, and national identities and challenge the view that history is mainly white, male, straight, cisgender, or Christian. Surviving the hysteria In January 1994, I sent a letter to all the known queer organizations in the United States regarding my desire to establish October of that year as Lesbian and Gay History Month, adapted from Dr. Woodsons model. I selected October because its in the academic year; the first and second Marches on Washington were in October; and October 11 had been designated National Coming Out Day since 1988.Endorsements came quickly. A national coordinating committee of highly capable and energetic educators and activists was organized. We gathered resources, bibliographies, essays, and activity recommendations and created a curriculum packet. There was controversy, of course. On the floor of the House of Representatives, Republican Rep. Dan Burton of Indiana shouted that parents should scream bloody murder about this new history month. And Beverly LaHaye, head of the conservative womens group Concerned Women for America, wrote to her followers that every Christian parent in America will view this official observance of homosexuality as a direct assault on innocent, unsuspecting children. But the idea survived the hysteria. Today, LGBTQ+ History Month is a well-established occasion. Syracuse University, for example, hosted twenty-five History Month events last October. Equality Forums History Month Icons Project has recognized 558 queer icons since 2006 31 every October for 18 years. And this publication, LGBTQ Nation, has published dozens of queer history articles every October since 2011.In the thirty years LGBTQ+ History Month has existed, nineteen other international locations have established a history month, starting with the UK in 2005 and most recently New Zealand, which inaugurated its history month this past July with a day-long event at the National Library.History month teams are now connected to each other through the International Committee on LGBTQ+ History Months (ICoHM), founded in 2021. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTrans McDonalds employee wins $930,000 after barrage of workplace harassmentAfter an 11-year legal battle, a transgender woman in Washington, DC was awarded $930,000 in her lawsuit over workplace discrimination at a local McDonalds fast food restaurant. The jury agreed with Diana Portillo Medrano that she was subjected to a barrage of taunts, laughter, ridicule, and harassment because she is a transgender woman, as described in the suit against the owners of the northwest DC franchise. Related Judge rules straight, cis principal cant be the victim of anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination She says her civil rights were violated after she stood up for LGBTQ+ people. A judge disagrees. The lawsuit stated that the defendants in the case franchise owner International Golden Foods LLC (IGF) and MCI Golden Foods LLC, based in Burke, Virginia used Medranos undocumented status as a pretext to fire her after she reported the serial harassment to the D.C. Office of Human Rights. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Evidence presented during the eight-day civil trial revealed Medrano was one of many employees hired by the company without legal authorization to work in the United States. Medrano emigrated from El Salvador. After she formalized and elevated her complaints, defendants fired her on pretextual grounds. Defendants discriminated against Ms. Medrano because of her gender identity and retaliated against her in violation of the District of Columbia Human Rights Act, the complaint stated.Medrano was hired in 2011 as a customer service rep at the franchise and was recognizedand promoted for her good work, the lawsuit said. Her coworkers treatment of her changed after she started her transition. Despite a successful five-year career with McDonalds marked by raises, promotions, and awards and absence of discipline, [laintiff Diana Medranos supervisors and co-workers discriminated against her because she is a transgender woman, the lawsuit said. She was fired in 2016.Managers and supervisors routinely referred to her as male despite her expressed request that they respect her gender identity as female, encouraging co-workers to harass her relentlessly in like fashion, the lawsuit stated. When she complained to her managers, they claimedthat the harassment was justified because she hadnt legally changed her name. The jury awarded Medrano $700,000 in punitive damages and $230,000 for emotional distress. The jury clearly found that IGF continually used unauthorizedemployees, hired and employed unauthorized workers knowingly, Jonathan Puth, one of Medranos attorneys, told the Washington Blade. And they never fired anyone for that reason at any of their stores except for Diana. They were motivated to retaliate against her because she kept complaining about discrimination, he said. When you are sureof what you have experienced, no matter how much time passes, the truth will come to light, Medrano said in a statement. Our truth is our best weapon to achieve justice, she said. It is truth, justice, and faith in God that have helped me gethere.Diana is our hero, Puth said following the verdict. She stood up for her rights in the face of terrible harassment and kept fighting even after she was fired for doing so. This verdict puts other employers on notice that tolerating harassment of transgender employees is both unlawful and costly.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMColorado will pay $1.5 million to a Christian web designer who won the right to discriminateThe state of Colorado will reportedly pay more than $1.5 million in legal fees to an anti-LGBTQ+ web designer who won the right to discriminate in the landmark Supreme Court case 303 Creative v. Elenis. In a statement, Bryan Neihart, senior counsel for the anti-LGBTQ+ hate group Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which represented Smith, defended the practice of the victor in a civil rights case seeking legal fees from the losing side. Related GOP mailer bashed Ted Cruzs opponent for letting a trans girl play girls sports. It was all lies. Trans man Mack Beggs is incensed at how the GOP butchered his story. Our clients Lorie Smith and her design studio, 303 Creative, prevailed at the U.S. Supreme Court and achieved a landmark victory a victory that helps to protect all Americans freedom of speech from government censorship and coercion, Neihart said. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today After Smith a Christian web designer sued the state of Colorado in 2016 over its anti-discrimination law the Supreme Court ruled that some small businesses have a free speech right to refuse service based on their personal beliefs. Smith argued her free speech was being stifled because she wanted to get into the wedding website business without serving LGBTQ+ customers because she believes that God is calling her to promote and celebrate His design for marriage between one man and one woman only. The Court said that Colorados LGBTQ+-inclusive anti-discrimination law cant be enforced against her for refusing to make websites for same-sex couples even if shes making similar websites for opposite-sex couples. After the decision, many argued the case was riddled with alleged lies. When Smith filed her suit, she said she had never made a wedding website, and no same-sex couple had asked her to make one for them. The state of Colorado brought that up to question her standing in the case and try to get it thrown out. Then, in early 2017, her lawyers at ADF said that she, in fact, hadreceived such a request from a man named Stewart, who wanted design work for his wedding with his fiance, Mike. They printed out the request received through Smiths website shortly after she filed her lawsuit which included his contact information. They submitted it to the court. But after the Court had already ruled, a journalist discovered that the man was straight, married to a woman, a web designer himself, lived in California, and had never heard of Smith or her case before. ADF called the revelation a lie and a desperate attempt to malign ADF, our client, and a critical ruling affirming all Americans free speech. ADF also argued that Smith didnt need to have received a request for a same-sex wedding website because her argument before the Court was that the mere existence of Colorados anti-discrimination law was enough to silence her speech. After the ruling, the progressive think tank Data for Progress asked people in a poll whether they support such exemptions to anti-discrimination law, and it turned out Americans largely disagreed with the decision. 65% of people said that a business should not be allowed to turn away clients based on their race, religion, disability, or sexual orientation, even if the business owner claims serving diverse people is against their personal beliefs. When asked about specific situations, over half of respondents still said that they are against discrimination. Data for Progress asked about whether a business should be allowed to refuse service if their services are used for a same-sex wedding, and only 42% of registered voters agreed, while 52% disagreed.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 45 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMLibs of TikTok blamed shooting threat on epidemic of trans violence. The perpetrator was cis.Last week, the X account Libs of TikTok, run by Chaya Raichik, inaccurately claimed a school shooting threat was made by a trans person. Raichik has not recanted her claim even after law enforcement confirmed a cisgender girl made the threat. Leaked texts reveal that on September 24, a teenage girl in Tampa, Florida threatened to shoot up Alonso High School. The Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office (HCSO) posted on X about the incident after they arrested her. However, their post inaccurately referred to the girl as he, leading to Raichik assuming the girl was transgender. WWW.PRIDE.COMJames Dean biopic about his alleged gay romance is on the way & we're already SEATEDA new James Dean biopic was announced on Monday, the 69th anniversary of the iconic actor's tragic death. And it's focusing on his relationship with another man.Is it too soon to be seated? Because, we are. The movie, written and directed by Guy Guido, will be based on the book Surviving James Dean by William Bast. Bast was a classmate of Dean's at UCLA, and the book charts their progression from roommates to lovers over the course of five years until Dean's death. According to Bast, the relationship was kept a secret due to Dean's quickly burgeoning career as an actor."I have been a fan and historian of James Dean since I was 18 years old, so I knew about his 'friend' Willie, even when information about their relationship was straight-washed by the Hollywood machine," Guido said, per The Hollywood Reporter. "As a filmmaker, I love telling the story of a celebritys life in their coming-of-age period. As a gay man, I was particularly drawn to Basts unique story."The film is still in early stages. There's no cast and no financing, but it seems likely Guido is hoping announcing the intention to bring this story to the screen will drum up the appropriate amount of interest. And so far, that seems to be working, at least as far as social media is concerned. (@) (@) (@) (@) (@) Regardless of who ends up nabbing the role of Dean, it sounds as if Guido is determined to make sure it's done right."I am obsessed with getting the look right when it comes to casting and directing a film about a famous person," he said. WWW.PRIDE.COMThe Boulet Brothers say who they will NEVER cast & spill secrets on the 6-6-sickening new seasonToday, The Boulet Brothers Dragula says Hello uglies to season 666 and its six-six-sickening. The shows creators, Dracmorda and Swanthula, promise its going to be the most wild card of a season yet. As the diabolical duo explain, theres a magic to casting a reality series and together they have cracked the alchemical code.Along with plenty of fresh meat, season 666 will also feature a couple of familiar faces, Majesty (formerly James Majesty) and Yuri (formerly Yuri Gauii). That in and of itself will shake up the game, but beyond that, The Boulets decided to take an even more daring route with their casting this time around. This one was unique because in previous seasons, as the shows gotten bigger, weve become a little bit distanced from the club world and the drag performance stages, Swanthula recalls to PRIDE. But there was always a floating folder in the casting process that we labeled the wild cards. It was just like the people we didnt really know a lot about. We dont know what theyre going to do. How will they be on camera? If there was a question mark, they ended up in that folder. Season six comes around, and wejust said, were casting everyone from the wild card folder.Even Majesty, that was such a wild card decision, adds Dracmorda. Theres a lot of talk of Well, shouldnt she be on a Titans season? Youll see [in the premiere episode] why he ended up on this season. But that in itself was a wild card choice. And were like, you know what? This seasons gonna be crazy. Lets go for it, like, lets just throw them in the mix and see what happens, she reveals to PRIDE. Clearly, the duo are on the right track. Not only is the show more popular than ever, but even the The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences had to take note of the drag and television excellence coming out of The Boulets dark laboratory. This year, the two were nominated for two Emmys for Outstanding Makeup for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program and Outstanding Hairstyling for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program. While the nods feel very correct, the duo reveals the news still came as a surprise. The funny thing is, we were in bed and I didnt even know that they were announcing the nomination, recalls Dracmorda. I just wasnt paying attention. And [Drag Race judge] Michelle Visage texted me while I was in bed at like, 8:00 in the morning. It was like, Congratulations! And I was like, On what? What happened? Then I went online and tried to dig around, like, Oh my god, wow! So, it was really shocking.See on InstagramWe got inundated with texts, and everyone was like, Oh my god, congratulations. What are you going to wear? And Im like, Oh God, just shut up. Let me enjoy this before you stress me out how were going to appear there! jokes Swanthula. To be honest with you, were so used to being outliers in everything, on the social fringe, so to be recognized in that way, Im literally googling, How prestigious are the Emmys exactly? Its the topm so it was very much like a pinch myself sort of moment. It felt very affirming when we were there. It felt very correct. For fans of the show, this recognition was a long time in coming. Theres something so powerful about seeing the work of queer people and queer culture not only being celebrated, but the people who create it getting that same kind of attention. All too often, queer culture is plucked, grabbed ,and appropriated by the mainstream, leaving the artists behind. Its a trend The Boulets are well aware of. Weve had, what, six seasons now, a spin-off Titans season, and the Resurrection feature? Traitors is a new show, for example, which shares some similarities with Dragula. The way that they kill the people at the end and Alan Cummings is very Boulet Brothers in his presentation. You see how they were recognized immediately. So, there is still a cross to bear by being queer and making queer art. Its not embraced as quickly. says Dracmorda. Thankfully, thats changing for The Boulets who aspire to more Emmy nods next season, including one for casting. Based on their new approach this season with casting, we think they may have this one in the bag.In the past, the duo have spoken about the alchemy of casting but digging a little deeper into how they find their monsters, Swanthula says there is in fact a bit of a formula they follow. You have to have a love of reality TV, not just drag, but reality and [have a] knowledge of people, she explains. She goes on to add that first you find artists who are musts and then the fun part begins: finding the elements that, as she puts it, agitate, support, contradict to stir up drama and raise the stakes. That being said, there are limits to just how agitating a star can be. Just to be frank, we dont cast assholes like, we just wont do it, says Dracmorda. There are people out there that, people ask, Why arent they on the show? and same thing with judges. Im like, because theyre an asshole. Im not going to put someone like that on the show. Im not going to elevate someone like that. For the most part, the queens feel theyve been successful in executing that ethos. I think in the entire history of the show, theres only one that has snuck through, in my opinion, who has proven to be more destructive, I guess, Dracmorda shares. We really want to elevate the people that we cast on the show. Now, will we cast someone as delusional? Absolutely. I mean, unaware, delusional, all those things are great, but we dont want to elevate someone who just has sort of a hateful heart.Sometimes crafting the prefect cast also means casting queens who have previously starred on another drag competition, like Yuri this season, or Jade Jolie in season four. Again, this comes back to adding a spice and agitation. Its evidenced by the way the season four artists tested Jades bona fides as a super monster; these queens come in with a little something extra to prove. Because people have preconceived notions about who they are and what theyll do, and if youre really this and trying to almost gate-keep being alternative which I hate, explains Swanthula. The entire art form is alternative. Whether youre a pretty supermodel or youre an ugly supermonster, the mainstream world is not looking at you like a sane person. So the separation I dont appreciate. Jades journey is a little bit different and her reception was different than Yuris. In fact, The Boulets reveal Yuri almost starred in not one, but two previous seasons of Dragula, season three and season five, but it turns out season 666 was her destiny. Also, if theres any doubt if she or any of the other drag artists featured this season belong on the show, the exterminations will quickly sort the normies from the monsters. For those unfamiliar with the exterminations, theyre the test of will, grit, and endurance. Theyre often terrifying, grotesque, or painful and this season The Boulets say theyre more wicked than ever. We did not skimp on the exterminations this year, sometimes well be like, Oh my god, the first two episodes were so rough. Lets change three and four and make it easier. We did not do that this year. So fans will be shocked every episode, reveals Dracmorda.See on InstagramBeyond simply being unbelievably entertaining, the exterminations exist to both push the artists and to reveal their deeper layers. There is a method to the madness. Its as fun as it is to watch drag queens doing insane things. You know, the whole idea behind it is to succeed and show business, you really have to push yourself outside of your comfort zone, says Dracmorda. Some people rise to the occasion. Its also the way that some queens are able to save themselves from elimination when theyve let themselves down in the floorshow although taking part in the extermination alone isnt always enough to propel the artist through to the next challenge. What makes the difference? Its complicated. You can tell when someones defeated. And sometimes by the time you drive them out to the location theyre waiting for all the equipment to get set up and you can just tell theyre done. I think that determines a lot, explains Dracmorda. To expand on that just slightly, because sometimes it will be where, 'wow, the performances or the looks were so close in the judging. Lets look at the extermination.' The extermination almost then becomes, like, a qualifier, adds Swanthula. You have to endure this...whether you like it or not, if you want to stay here, thats whats got to happen. Then [if you do] it could potentially go back to the drag. How were they on stage? How was their presence? How were they during the judgment? Can they take a critique? Are they professional? These are all things that we consider. After all, once the season wraps and airs, The Boulets tour with many of these queens and having an idea of how they operate under pressure can be very... illuminating. (@) Not that The Boulets have much time to ruminate on anything at the moment, as they have so many projects in the works including entering their video game vixen era. The two made history as the first-ever horror hosts to be featured in the extremely popular Dead By Daylight. Its so awesome. Were so excited. Its an honor. Its really exciting for us to be the first horror hosts featured in the game, gushes Swanthula. If youve been a Dragula fan for a long time, you probably would have thought this day would never come to light: The Emmys and you can play The Boulets in a video game? Its wild!People in the industry would be like, what? but its almost more of an honor than winning the Emmy, to be in Dead by Daylight, admits Dracmorda. All the horror icons are in there. Its Jason and Freddy [Krueger] and Michael [Myers]. I mean, everybodys in there, and us! It was really humbling. While most people would be satisfied with taking both the worlds of television and video games by storm, theres truly no rest for this wicked duo. Case in point: Theyre heading into spooky season with one more incredible project up their dark and billowing sleeves: their new EP Halloween Houseparty. While musically The Boulets are known for having a harder, gothy edge, these new tracks are a major and delightfully spooky departure. The sound of the new EP is all retro rockabilly and classic standard vibes with a camp and creepy edge. In other words, prepare for it to make its way onto all of your spooky season playlists, in perpetuity. For The Boulets, this new EP was a true passion project that reveals another side of the duo theyre excited to share with fans. We love vintage Halloween stuff. I collect Halloween blow molds, like the light up, old school antique ones. I have many battles on eBay to collect them all. And I think that this album is a classic holiday Halloween album, shares Dracmorda. The Boulet Brothers arent just glamor and evil. Theres a part of us that really appreciates camp and kitschiness, says Swanthula, explaining that the new EP was actually born in part out of one of the new performances they did on the season five tour. We developed a new show, and we call it like our Halloween Mask show, with retro dancing skeletons in the background. It was cutesy, we were presenting ourselves as cute and dark, not evil and dark. Swanthula admits that they were initially concerned the fans wouldnt take to seeing them through this new lens. Instead, the reception was overwhelmingly positive, and they knew they were on the right track with the new music. One thing all of this makes very clear: The Boulets have found their lane and are blazing down it all the way to hell were just excited to be along for the ride. The Boulet Brothers Dragula season 666 is streaming now on Shudder and AMC+, Halloween Houseparty drops October 4 and is available to preorder now. The first single from it, All Hallows Eve, is available to stream now on Apple Music, Spotify, and other music platforms.0 Comments 0 Shares 34 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTrump advisor calls Tim Walz an effeminate caricature in lead-up to VP debateJason Miller, senior advisor to former President Donald Trump, called Democratic vice presidential nominee Gov. Tim Walz (MN) effeminate in the lead-up to Walzs Tuesday night debate against Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH). Walz was very good in debates, Miller told CNN on Tuesday morning. I want to repeat that Tim Walz is very good in debates. Really good. Hes been a politician for nearly 20 years. Hell be very well prepared. Hes not going to be the wildly gesticulating effeminate caricature we see at rallies pointing to Kamala Harris and dancing about on the stage. Related JD Vance contradicts Trump, praising admirable anti-abortion & IVF laws He praised a collection of essays that blame IVF and childless women for harming America. Pressing Miller to explain his comment, CNN anchor Masie Hunt replied, Effeminate has a lot of specific connotations to it. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Miller replied, Well, uh. Goofy and bouncing around. Its not someone who comes across as this alpha male, someone whos a killer thats going to come out there and be sharp on the debate stage. But thats what were going to see tonight with Tim Walz. Again, not to say that JD Vance isnt going to show up and do very well, but Tim Walz will be an absolute killer.Numerous online pundits have said masculinity has become a subtext this election, with Vance and Trump positioning themselves as strongman candidates who will protect women by upholding conservative gender roles. The Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, has painted Republicanss anti-abortion policies as a threat to womens bodily autonomy and the right of all Americans to make personal medical decisions.Walz is a father, a hunter, a former military servicemember, and a former football coach who has steadfastly supported LGBTQ+, reproductive, and workers rights. Vance is also a father and former military service member, but he is opposed to LGBTQ+ rights (including marriage equality) and has made repeated statements criticizing women who dont have children, even going so far as to characterize them and stepparents as miserable childless cat ladies.Out gay Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) said he expects Vance to appeal to transphobia during Tuesday nights debate. His favorables are underwater. We know that Gov. Walz is popular with the electorate, so I expect [Vance] to be nasty and lie and bring up, you know, parts of the record it would not surprise me for him to bring that up, Garcia told The Washington Blade, adding, [Vance] will say whatever it takes to try to get support. But I think the governor is well prepared, Gracia added. [Walz has] talked about being a dad and being a governor for all people, and not bullying kids and not bullying young people, and I think people will relate to that.Last week, Miller said Trump would support Republican attorneys general monitoring womens pregnancies to prosecute them for getting out-of-state abortions. In May 2021, a court tossed Millers defamation lawsuit against a now-defunct website that accurately reported court documents alleging that Miller had an extra-marital affair with a female stripper who he then surreptitiously dosed with an abortion pill after finding out she was pregnant. The dosing led the woman to abort and nearly die, she alleged.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 51 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMBlackmailed gay men are being forced to fight Vladmir Putins war in UkraineChechen human rights group SK SOS has reported gay men in the Russian republic are being forcibly conscripted into Russias war with Ukraine. One man has died in the fighting. As reported in a Telegram post by the outlawed organization established in 2021 to provide assistance to LGBTQ+ individuals facing life-threatening persecution, discrimination, and abuse in Chechnya a new wave of detentions in August follows the forced recruitment of gay men that started shortly before President Vladimir Putins partial mobilization of Russian men into the army in September 2022. Over 100 gay men are estimated to have died in the state-sponsored persecution between 2017 and 2019.The September 4 Telegram post by SK SOS detailed an increasing wave of detentions of gay men in Chechnya in late August this year. Security forces are using the same methods of entrapping gay men in the forced recruitment effort, then using their social media accounts to set up dates with other men and detain them for the same purpose. State authorities methodology of terror has been the same since their first forced recruitments in 2022, with fabricated criminal charges and warnings of pre-trial detention where detainees sexual orientation would be revealed to fellow inmates followed by blackmailing them into the army.In 2023, another raid in Chechnya netted several members of the LGBTQ+ community. While the women among them were released to their families the same evening, four men were forcibly sent to Ukraine, SK SOS reported. Their fates remain unknown.Russia and Chechnya have been closely allied in their harassment of LGBTQ+ citizens in the one-time breakaway republic. In February last year, a 28-year-old gay Chechen refugee wasarrested in Moscowas he tried to return to the Netherlands. He was traveling home after attending his fathers funeral. In 2021,two young gay menwho escaped from Chechnya after being tortured were caught by Russian police and returned to Chechen custody, the Russia LGBT Network reported. WWW.PRIDE.COMDirty Diddy hit with new sex crime allegations from 120 men, women, & minorsOtherwise known by the stage names Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, and Diddy, the hip hop artist and business entrepreneur Sean Combs was arrested on Monday, September 16 in New York City on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. Now, lawsuits coming from 120 new victims which includes men and women are expected to be filed against Combs. These suits reportedly accuse Combs of "sex crimes dating back to 1991, several of whom were minors at the time of the alleged incidents," The Hollywood Reporter's Winston Cho writes. The new accusers also claim that they were drugged and raped. The THR report names Tony Buzbee as the lawyer who's representing this group of 120 new accusers. Buzbee reportedly says that "companies and individuals who were aware of and profited off of turning a blind eye to Combs' misconduct will be named in the litigation. They could include Bad Boy Entertainment and its president Harve Pierre, Universal Music Group and Epic Records, among various others that've already been roped into legal actions over Combs' alleged crimes."While it is accurate to say that certain high-profile celebrities might be involved in these accusations, it is important to note that this is a very serious legal case with incredibly concerning allegations. Thus, it is unwise and irresponsible for members of the public to start accusing celebrities that they assume might be involved in these circumstances based on theories and assumptions. What matters now, more than ever, is listening to the actual victims filing these lawsuits and allowing this case to play out in the legal system. See on Instagram Combs' arrest from mid-September was followed by his "not guilty" plea. At the time, CNN reported that Combs was "held by himself at the Special Housing Unit in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn."Just a few days ago, on Saturday September 29, People reported that Combs was "no longer on suicide watch" and had received visits from family members while waiting for his trial. With 120 new accusers, however, it's now even clearer that Combs will remain in custody and will face several legal cases over the next few months and years. This story is still developing0 Comments 0 Shares 55 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COM15 groundbreaking queer films every Gen Z gay NEEDS to seeSeminal queer cinemaGeneration Z is making waves and upsetting the status quo in unique ways by living louder and prouder than past generations had been able to and speaking truth to power in bigger numbers than weve seen before, but older generations still have something to learn from the older queer generations!Including the seminal LGBTQ+ films that have both been shaped by and impacted queer culture and have influenced countless tv shows and movies that young people love today think Drag Race and Heartstopper.Despite how it may feel these days, we have made amazing strides in getting closer to equal rights and being able to live loud and proud more than previous generations, and while most of that is thanks to the tireless work of LGBTQ+ activists, movies about queer people have helped to move the needle too. Movies have the power to create empathy where none existed before, show the general public a segment of society that was largely ignored, and make marginalized groups feel seen and accepted. So lets take a look at the groundbreaking, iconic, and seminal queer films that every young person needs to see!1. Glen or Glenda (1953)Synopsis: A psychiatrist tells the stories of a transvestite (named Glen or Glenda) and a pseudohermaphrodite (named Alan or Anne). Why it's important: Loosely inspired by the gender-affirming surgery Christine Jorgensen, which made national headlines, and directed by enthusiastic cross-dresser Ed Wood, while not perfect, the film is a plea for tolerance and a surprisingly loving depiction of a trans woman that was unheard of in the 50s. Its a film that is frequently referenced and was the starting point of a lot of the campy and avant guard queer movies we see today.2. Boys in the Band (1970)Synopsis: A group of 30-something gay men gather to celebrate the birthday of their friend Harold, who is a self-hating gay man, but one of their straight friends crashes the party. Why it's important: Based on the groundbreaking off-Broadway play and starring the original cast, this is a seminal piece of queer cinema because every plot youve seen in a gay movie since likely has its genesis in this film. While there may be some stereotypical characters, it showed gay men on screen at a time and focused on gay topics at a time when that was unheard of.3. Pink Flamingos (1972)Synopsis: Notorious Baltimore criminal Divine goes up against a sleazy married couple who attempt to humiliate her and seize her title as "The Filthiest Person Alive."Why it's important: This cult film, made by out gay director John Waters and starring the drag queen Divine, was banned in several countries but remains a classic of queer cinema for its outside art feel, its transgressive visuals and taboo-smashing plot, and for celebrating filth like only the king of sleaze could.4. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)Synopsis: A musical that follows a newly engaged couple who break down in an isolated area and must seek shelter at the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-n-Furter.Why it's important: Not only does The Rocky Horror Picture Show feature a whole spectrum of queer characters including Frank-N-Furter, Riff Raff, and Magenta, who all come from the planet Transsexual and was super campy, but it became a cult classic at midnight theaters with audience interaction and on-stage performances that became a haven for queer youth to express themselves. 5. The Color Purple (1985)Synopsis: Based on the novel by Alice Walker, spans 40 years and tells the story of Celie, a Black woman living in the South who survives incredible abuse and bigotry. When she is 14 she becomes pregnant by her father, she's then married off to an abusive and uncaring man, and then forms a close relationship with a woman named Shug. Why it's important: Although there have been other adaptations since the 1985 Whoopi Goldberg starring version remains iconic. Author Alice Walker has been very clear about Celies queer identity, and in the film, the only loving, romantic relationship Celie has is with Shug. While their physical relationship is relegated to a single seen in this Stephen Spielberg-directed film, at the time, people were still incensed that it was included at all.6. Desert Hearts (1985)Synopsis: While waiting for her divorce papers, a repressed professor of literature is unexpectedly seduced by a carefree, spirited young lesbian. Why it's important: Made by out lesbian director Donna Deitch, at a time when few women were directing movies at all, let alone queer ones, this seminal lesbian film is one of the most romantic queer movies ever made. Not only does the film have a nuanced depiction of a lesbian love story, but it was also the first lesbian-themed feature film written and directed by a woman.7. Paris is Burning (1990)Synopsis: This documentary chronicles the New York drag scene in the 1980s, focusing on balls, voguing and the ambitions and dreams of the queer community. Why it's important: Jennie Livingstons documentary showed America a part of Black queer culture that most were unaware existed. It celebrated queer culture and serves as a time capsule and intimate look at the pageant and ballroom scene of that era and the discrimination queer Black youth faced every day.8. Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)Synopsis: Housewife Evelyn Couch's (Kathy Bates) befriends Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy) on a visit to a nursing home. Ninny recounts the exploits of her free-spirited sister-in-law Idgie (Mary Stuart Masterson) in the 1920's, and the bond Idgie shared with her friend Ruth (Mary-Louise Parker). Why it's important: While the film is never explicitly queer (it's partially set in the '20s, after all), it quickly became a lesbian classic because of the love story between Idgie and Ruth. Their love story is sweet and sad, and although the words gay or lesbian aren't used to describe them, even their small town recognizes what the two women are to each other.9. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)Synopsis: This comedy follows a Australian drag queens played by Terrence Stamp, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce as they travel on a bus named Priscilla to a gig in the Outback and get into hijinks along the way.Why it's important: The film was a surprise worldwide hit with mainstream audiences and broke boundaries because it showed gay men in drag as opposed to straight men cross-dressing like had been done in the past.10. To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995)Synopsis: Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo star as drag queens who travel cross-country until their car breaks down, leaving them stranded in a small town. Why it's important: You can criticize it for not getting drag quite right and for sanitizing a subversive part of queer culture, but its also a heartwarming movie that was groundbreaking in the 90s and brought drag queens into the homes of everyday Americans.11. The Birdcage (1996)Synopsis: Starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, The Birdcage follows a gay Miami drag club owner and his drag queen companion who agree to pretend to be a straight couple so that their son can introduce them to his fiance's right-wing parents. Why it's important: The '90s was still a rough time to be queer and gay characters in movies were still few and far between. So, while the LGBTQ+ characters may seem like caricatures, The Birdcage was groundbreaking because it showed a loving gay couple who had a healthy, happy son of their own and gay culture inside the club.12. Bound (1996)Synopsis: Corky, a lesbian ex con hired to work in an apartment as a plumber, meets neighbors Caesar, who launders money for the Mafia, and his girlfriend Violet. The two women have a love affair and decide to steal $2,000,000 that Caesar has in custody before he gives them back to Mafia boss Gino Marzone. Why it's important: Starring Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly and directed by the Wachowski sisters, who had yet to come out as trans, this low-budget erotic thriller borrowed from noirs of the past but made the hero a woman, and her love interest another woman. It was daring in the mid-'90s to make such a sexy, erotic movie focused on a lesbian couple.13. But I'm a Cheerleader (1999)Synopsis: A naive teenager played by Natasha Lyonne is sent to rehab camp when her straitlaced parents and friends suspect her of being a lesbian. Why it's important: This film holds cult classic status for many reasons, including the candy-colored aesthetic, the queer characters, the fact that it made straight people the butt of the joke in the 90s, and for being a self-aware comedy about growing up queer in a homophobic place.14. Boys Don't Cry (1999)Synopsis: Based on a true story, Boys Don't Cry follows a young transgender drifter named Brandon as he navigates love, life, and trying to pass as a boy in rural Nebraska, but is ultimately murdered in a violent hate crime. Why it's important: While there has been fair criticism since the movie came out because of the broad interpretation of Brandon Teena's harrowing story and because Hilary Swank was cast instead of a trans actor, the film also humanized a trans man and catapulted the brutal hate crime that killed him into the spotlight. Directed by genderqueer filmmaker Kimberly Pierce, who even traveled with the Transexual Menace activist group as research for the film, Boys Dont Cry remains a seminal queer film despite its problems.15. Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)Synopsis: This film, adapted from the critically acclaimed off-Broadway hit, follows a German emigrant living in a trailer in Kansas is the victim of a botched sex-change operation, and tells the story of the "internationally ignored" rock singer, Hedwig, and her search for stardom and love. Why it's important: Hedwig and the Angry Inch came out shortly after 9/11 and took theaters by storm. At a time when the most prominent queer characters in media were the sanitized gay men on Will & Grace, Hedwig celebrated a genderqueer character challenging the status quo.0 Comments 0 Shares 50 Views 0 Reviews

At a time when the most prominent queer characters in media were the sanitized gay men on Will & Grace, Hedwig celebrated a genderqueer character challenging the status quo.0 Comments 0 Shares 52 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTim Walz got 3 great attacks on J.D. Vance during the vice presidential debateGov. Tim Walz (D-MN) ended on a strong note in his somewhat shaky Tuesday night vice presidential debate against Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), nailing Vance on his refusal to clearly state that former President Donald Trump lost the 2020 election. Walz also zinged Vance on the issues of abortion, immigration, and school shootings. Playing for moderate voters, Walz didnt deliver the knockout punch that Democrats desired. Vance has spent the last few weeks regularly interviewing on news programs, and his comfort and polish showed. Walz who has spent the last few weeks mostly speaking at rallies seemed nervous and sometimes stumbling through rushed talking points. While he didnt consistently attack Vance or call out his many falsehoods, Walz still shined at several key points that ultimately accomplished his goal of contrasting Trumps vanity with Kamala Harris vision. Related Kamala Harris repeatedly got under Donald Trumps skin during explosive first debate Harris goaded Trump into going off the rails and discussing immigrants eating cats and governors executing newborns. LGBTQ+ issues werent mentioned, though Walz did briefly mention Republican book banning as a form of censorship. Regardless, here are three debate moments where Walz effectively attacked Vance and Trumps record (and two other moments that made for a memorable occasion). Subscribe to our Newsletter today Walz gets Vance to apologize for GOP anti-abortion hardlinersWalz effectively stunned Vance in a segment on reproductive rights, noting women who have suffered from not being able to get medically necessary care under abortion bans since Trumps Supreme Court justices overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 court decision that legalized abortion nationwide.Vance lied about his own record, claiming he has never supported a national ban he has and saying that Republicans support expanding fertility treatments, even though GOP lawmakers also think that they facilitate murder. At one point, Vance admitted, My party, weve got to do so much better of a job at earning the American peoples trust back on this issue where they frankly just dont trust us. Hes right, and it may spell trouble for Republicans as 10 states will vote on abortion-related ballot measures, and the issue has typically increased Democratic turnout to the polls. Contrasting himself, Walz said, In Minnesota, what we did was restore Roe v. Wade. We made sure that we put women in charge of their health care. This is a basic human right. We have seen maternal mortality skyrocket in Texas, outpacing many other countries in the world. This is about health care. In Minnesota, we are ranked first in health care for a reason: We trust women. We trust doctors.Vance later said he wouldnt support the creation of a federal pregnancy monitoring agency, as proposed in Project 2025, The Heritage Foundations blueprint for Trumps second presidency. However, this week, Trumps senior advisor says the former president supports hunting down and punishing women who seek abortions in other states, the mechanism for which would necessarily involve monitoring womens pregnancies.Vance then claimed that Walz signed an abortion statute in Minnesota stating that says a doctor is under no obligation to provide life-saving care to a baby who survives a botched late-term abortion. Walz accused Vance of trying to distort the law.Walz did indeed sign a law no longer requiring doctors to try and preserve the life of any infant born alive after an attempted abortion; Walzs law said, instead, that doctors must care for such an infant. However, the laws supporters says it allows families and doctors to forgo medical intervention in rare cases where infants are delivered with fatal complications after medically necessary abortion procedures, Axios explained.Jack Gruber-USA TODAY via iMAGN images View from the Spin Room as Republican JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walz square off during the CBS News vice presidential debate. CBS cut the mics during a scuffle over Vances racist immigration liesDuring a segment on immigration, Walz alluded to Vances repeated lies about Haitian immigrants eating house pets in Springfield, Ohio, saying, [Vances claims] vilified a large number of people who were here legally in the community of Springfield. The Republican governor said, Its not true. Dont do it.'Theres consequences for this. Theres consequences, Walz continued. And the consequences in Springfield were the governor had to send state law enforcement to escort kindergarteners to school, because the schools had received bomb threats over the repeated anti-immigrant claims. In his rebuttal, Vance replied, Look, in Springfield, Ohio and in communities all across this country youve got schools that are overwhelmed, youve got hospitals that are overwhelmed, youve got housing that is totally unaffordable because we brought in millions of illegal immigrants to compete with Americans for scarce homes. CBSs debate co-moderatorMargaret Brennanquickly fact-checked Vance, saying[Springfield] does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status, temporary protected status under U.S. federal law. Vance then replied, Margaret, the rules were that you guys werent going to fact-check, and since youre fact-checking me, I think its important to say whats actually going on. He then claimed that the Biden-Harris administration uses an application called the CBP One app where illegal migrants can apply for asylum or apply for parole and be granted legal status at the wave of a Kamala Harris open-border wand. While the app exists, it remains the sole way for undocumented immigrants to apply for an asylum appointment, the first step in a process that can take months or years. Only 547,000migrants scheduled an appointment through the app over the last year, according to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol. As Vance continued talking, Walz said that the federal laws that granted protected status to Sprinfields Haitian immigrants have existed since 1990. Vance continued to claim otherwise, but the moderators then cut the mens microphones. Brennan said, Gentlemen, the audience cant hear you because your mics are cut. We have so much we want to get to. Thank you for explaining the legal process. At another point during the immigration discussion, Vance dodged a question on how Trump would fulfill his promise to conduct the largest mass deportation of immigrants in the nations history; specifically, whether Trump would instruct immigration enforcement officers to separate undocumented parents from their U.S.-born children who legally have birthright citizenship.Vance then claimed that the Department of Homeland Security under Kamala Harris has lost 320,000 migrant children, some of whom are being used as drug trafficking mules. Vance may have been misrepresenting a federal oversight agencys report which claimed that 32,000 migrant children who arrived at the border unaccompanieddidnt show up to their court hearings. While Walz criticized Vance for vilifying people in his anti-immigrant rhetoric and said theres no credible evidence that migrant children are being used as drug mules, CBS has reported about the phenomenon in the past. Brennan also mentioned CBS News polling which showed that over 50% of Americans support mass deportations. However, the national organization Immigration Hub says a majority of Americans oppose mass deportations when given the option for immigrants to pursue a pathway to legal citizenship.Jack Gruber-USA TODAY via iMAGN images Donald Trump Jr. listens as Republican JD Vance speaks to Sean Hannity in The Spin Room after the vice presidential debate. Walz reveals Vance wont say Trump lost the 2020 election Only at the debates conclusion did the co-moderators ask possibly the most important question, whether Vance would support an unconstitutional and illegal challenge to overturn the 2024 presidential election.Co-moderator Norah ODonnell told Vance, After the 2020 election, President Trumps campaign and others filed 62 lawsuits contesting the results. Judges, including those appointed by President Trump and other Republican presidents, looked at the evidence and said there was no widespread fraud. The governors of every state in the nation, Republicans and Democrats, certified the 2020 election results and sent a legal slate of electors to Congress for January 6th.Senator Vance, she continued, you have said you would not have certified the last presidential election and would have asked the states to submit alternative electors. That has been called unconstitutional and illegal. Would you again seek to challenge this years election results, even if every governor certifies the results? Vance replied, Well, Norah, first of all, I think that were focused on the future. He then said that the more important threat to democracy is the threat of censorship of people who spread COVID misinformation and other conspiracy theories on social media.Walz replied, [Trump] lost this election, and he said he didnt. One hundred and forty police officers were beaten at the Capitol [during the January 6, 2021 riots by Trumps followers to stop the 2020 elections certification], some with the American flag several [police officers] later died. And it wasnt just there: In Minnesota, a group gathered on the state capitol grounds in St. Paul and said Were marching to the Governors residence and there may be casualties. The only person there was my son and his dog, who was rushed out crying by state police.A Presidents words matter, Walz continued. To deny what happened on January 6, the first time in American history that a president or anyone tried to overturn a fair election and the peaceful transfer of power. This has got to stop. Its tearing our country apart. Vance then claimed that Trump peacefully handed over power when he left office on January 20, 2021, and added, We have to remember that for years in this country, Democrats protested the results of elections. Hillary Clinton in 2016 said that Donald Trump had the election stolen by Vladimir Putin because the Russians bought, like, $500,000 worth of Facebook ads.Walz replied, January 6th was not Facebook ads. He then said, This was a threat to our democracy in a way that we had not seen. And it manifested itself because of Donald Trumps inability to say, he is still saying he didnt lose the election.Walz then directly asked Vance, Did he lose the 2020 election?Vance replied, Tim, Im focused on the future. Did Kamala Harris censor Americans from speaking their mind in the wake of the 2020 COVID situation? Walz grimaced and said, That is damning. That is a damning non-answer.Later Walz added, When [Trumps former Vice President] Mike Pence made that decision to certify that election, thats why Mike Pence isnt on this stage. What Im concerned about is, where is the firewall with Donald Trump? Where is the firewall if he knows he could do anything, including taking an election and his vice presidents not going to stand to [up to] it?Thats what were asking you, America. Will you stand up? Will you keep your oath of office even if the President doesnt? he continued. And I think Kamala Harris would agree. She wouldnt have picked me if she didnt think I would do that because, of course, thats what we would do. So, America, I think youve got a really clear choice on this election of whos going to honor that democracy and whos going to honor Donald Trump.Jack Gruber/USA TODAY / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Republican JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walz greet before they square off during the CBS News vice presidential debate in New York City on Oct. 1, 2024. Walz & Vance find rare moment of unity in school shooting segmentAt another point in the debate, Walz called school shootings a parents biggest nightmare, adding, I got a 17-year-old, and he witnessed a shooting at a community center playing volleyball. Those things dont leave you. When it was Vances time to reply, he said, Tim, first of all, I didnt know that your 17-year-old witnessed a shooting, and Im sorry about that.Walz replied, I appreciate that.Vance added, Christ, have mercy. It is awful. He then blamed school shootings on an influx of guns coming through the U.S.-Mexico border, poor school security, and a mental health crisis in this country. Walz, comparatively, championed common-sense gun reforms like enhanced red flag laws, enhanced background checks, and an assault weapons ban and warned against turning schools into forts. This idea of stigmatizing mental health: Just because you have a mental health issue doesnt mean youre violent, Walz added. And I think what we end up doing is we start looking for a scapegoat. Sometimes it just is the guns. Its just the guns. And there are things that you can do about it. Was Walz too nice during the debate?Walz and Vance shook hands before and after the debate, the two men largely avoided personal attacks, and at several points, they even acknowledged that the other cared as deeply as they did about issues like undocumented immigration, off-shoring, trade deficits, and school shootings (though they disagreed about their proposed solutions).Numerous pundits and social media commenters pointed out that Walz could have attacked Vance more forcefully, especially during Vances whopping lie about President Trump working to preserve the Affordable Care Act, a landmark piece of healthcare legislation that Trump and Republicans repeatedly tried to repeal.Historically, vice presidential debates dont result in huge poll shifts. Regardless, Walzs warm Minnesota nice overtures likely have less to do with Vance himself and everything to do with Democrats continued attempts to win over reluctant Republican moderates and swing voters, those who want to feel acknowledged and listened to by Democrats and who simply cant bring themselves to vote for Trump.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 45 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMCharmaine McGuffey beat her old boss in an election after he fired her. Now its the rematch. In 2017, Charmaine McGuffey, then the highly-decorated Major in Command of jail and court services for the Hamilton County Sheriff in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the highest-ranking woman in the offices history, was fired by her boss, Sheriff Jim Neil, who had a history of telling her to sit down and be quiet.McGuffey was a liberal agitator in a law enforcement hierarchy dominated by conservative men, including Neil, who had to apologize in 2016 to the Democratic Party in Ohio for appearing on stage at a Trump rally Neil had won office as a Democrat. Related Trans councilwoman Andrea Jenkins explains Obama is the (2nd) coolest motherfker she ever met LGBTQ Nation put Jenkins in the hot seat to talk poetry, the Black Panthers, and of course, Bullwinkle J. Moose. McGuffey had been in hot water before for speaking truth to power, when she and some friends were confronted by police while walking to their car after leaving a gay bar. She lashed out at the officers for targeting them and was charged with disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and menacing. The charges were dropped, but Neils predecessor disciplined McGuffey for conduct unbecoming and slapped her with five days unpaid leave. Subscribe to our Newsletter today McGuffey took the reprimand in stride and as an opportunity to come out. She met her wife of 11 years not long after.Another opportunity was almost as life-changing. After Neil fired her for speaking out about use of force in the department, McGuffey who says being a woman and gay were contributing factors in her dismissal decided to challenge him in a run for sheriff herself.Democratic party leaders wouldnt forgive Neil for his alarming appearance with Donald Trump, and endorsed McGuffey. She walloped the sitting sheriff 2-1 in the primary and won the general election by five points, even as Trump beat Joe Biden by eight points in Ohio the very same year. But now, Jim Neil is back, showing his true colors and running for his old seat as a Republican. The race for Hamilton Countys top cop in 2024 is a head-to-head battle between old adversaries and red and blue ideologies. The new sheriff says of Neil, He made poor choices.Taking on McGuffey again may be one of the poorest. Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey spoke to LGBTQ Nation from her office at the Hamilton County Justice Center in Cincinnati.LGBTQ Nation: A sheriff is the top law enforcement officer of a county, and theyre generally elected. A police chief is the top cop in a city or other municipality, and theyre usually appointed by the mayor or a police commission. Which system do you think engenders more accountability?Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey: Well, certainly the sheriff engenders more accountability. Im accountable to 800,000 constituents. Thats the population of Hamilton County. Thats a lot of people, and those people frequently stop me, call me. They do expect their elected official to be not just accountable, but also present. How do you describe your politics, and should they matter in your line of work?Well, I think politics do matter. You know, the previous administration liked to describe himself as, Im not a politician. Well, yes, you are. Tell the truth, right? Because whenever youre running for office, youre a politician. You know, whenever youre asking people to put you in a position, and not someone else, you are politicking.Im a law-and-order candidate. I tell people that, and Im a Democrat. Ive been a Democrat my entire life. I was born a Democrat, much to my familys dismay. But I hold to and order. The officers know it, the prisoners in this jail know it. Everybody knows it. Its how Ive run my career. But I also factor in the fact that I am bound to also listen to my constituents on a number of issues. Now, what would those be? Well, they would be the issues of fair treatment, particularly when we deal with criminal justice reform and incarceration. Historically, we have had a hard incarceration model, which means people come to jail and they start losing things immediately, and I can run down the list: you can lose your job, you lose contact with your family, you lose money. And then we have these prisoners sit in jail with literally nothing to do.I had a judge one time tell me, Well, I want my guy that I sentenced to six months, I want him to sit in that cell and stare at those four walls. And my answer to that is, Oh, really, because when he gets out, hes going to do more crime. He has nowhere else to go, because youre pushing him now out the door and saying, Now go out and do better with less.' And where is the logic in that message? The other thing people want in criminal justice reform is they want to know that when they get approached by a uniformed officer, whether its because they got pulled over or for whatever reason, that that officer is going to use good manners, right? And I get it, there are people out there that dont use good manners when they talk to us, okay? But we are professionals. We are sworn to be above that. And I know that sometimes we have to escalate sometimes we have to escalate. We have to use language that is pretty harsh, and do some things that are in the use of force realm. But when you start that initial conversation with someone, you have to focus on using good manners, and you have to stay in that realm. And particularly, a lot of times were approaching people with mental illness, and thats something else the public wants people to understand and differentiate between: someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis and somebody whos just being an idiot, right? Those are some of the things that the public expects from us, and the Hamilton County Sheriffs Office delivers because I insist on it.Your opponent is the former sheriff of Hamilton County and your old boss, Jim Neil. How big a threat is he to your reelection, and how would you describe the difference between your terms in office? Its a very stark difference. Im a leader that keeps my hand on the wheel. I dont run for cover whenever something pops up that might be controversial. Im transparent, and I go to the media. What Jim Neil did is run for cover every time and anytime anything controversial came up. He pushed it off to somebody else, and what that allowed him to do is point fingers later.Youre the leader. You decide what way people do their jobs. You decide how accountable they are. He certainly has absolutely zero respect for criminal justice reform, right? He cant manage that and he didnt manage it in the eight years that he was here. He fired me because I was working actively in criminal justice reform. He made poor choices. In my last election my opponent was out of his weight class when he stepped in the ring with me, and I knew it and he didnt. And then it got proven. After you were sworn into office in January 2021, when you surveyed the Hamilton County Justice Center, what did you see?Oh my gosh, the place was a shambles. I mean, the jail was crumbling, and none of the infrastructure had been repaired or paid attention to. The locks didnt work on the cells. The deputies were walking out the door in droves because they werent safe. Assaults were through the roof. And use of force Ill give you an example. There were 77 excessive use of force investigations when I came on that year, and now that Im here, in 2024, so far weve had seven, and thats a culture change. And that was intentional, and I changed it immediately upon taking office. So there was a lot of dysfunction. The chain of command had collapsed. And for a paramilitary organization, if you dont have chain of command, you are in chaos. And thats really what we walked into, absolute chaos. Your Vote is a step toward Equality for All Make sure youre ready to vote! You grew up the daughter of a single mom along with two sisters, and youve said that you knew you wanted to be a police officer by the time you were 14. What inspired you at that age, in that household, to want to become a cop?Well, my mom was forced to fend for us and herself. Our dad was gone, out of the picture. There wasnt anybody else helping us. And mom, she worked very, very hard. And I watched her. I watched her make the impossible happen every day. I mean, she bought us a house, and she didnt have this high-paying wage job. But she got us to where we needed to be. When I watched her and how strong she was and the way she played the game, she was always fair. She always encouraged us to treat everyone with respect. And I follow in her footsteps. People will ask me sometimes I think this is fun theyll say, Man, youre so tough. I mean, wow, you know? And I go, You think Im tough, you should meet my sisters. I mean, wow!But anyway, thats how I grew up, and its the model that I follow. I knew early on that if youre not the leader in the group of kids youre going to have, you can potentially have a very bad day. And I always want to have good days, so thats where I stand. After taking office, you launched a community affairs division to enhance community engagement, along with a call center to answer questions from the public related to the legal and court systems. In the first 18 months, staff responded to over 70,000 calls for assistance. That sounds like an overwhelming success for a service that didnt exist before. What kind of questions are staff answering and what kind of assistance do callers get? Well, the staff answers a whole array of questions, because the criminal justice system is incredibly complex, and there are a whole lot of people out there that dont know how to navigate it. People want to know, whats my court date? I lost that paperwork, right? How do I get to courtroom such and such? How do I get my nephew bonded out? I dont even know the steps. What is his bond? Is he even in jail? We have Spanish speaking people, sometimes they come down in person. I have a Spanish speaker in that unit, and we will literally walk people to the places they need to be.And heres my question to the public: where did all those calls go when there wasnt the call center? I know where they went: they went nowhere. The phones were ringing off the hook, and nobody was answering them, and nobody had to care.So I created that, and Ill tell you, we get lots and lots of compliments. Now, we did get a guy that called and he wanted a tree removed from his front yard, so, you know, we had to move him on to someone else (laughing). But in general, thats a service, and thats our brand. How have stories of police abuse in cases like those of Michael Brown and Tamir Rice and Eric Garner and Tyree Nichols affected how you see officers engagement with the public, and how do you shape that relationship?I brought on a state-of-the-art training model called ABLE, thats Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement, which means our officers are empowered if they see someone, even of rank, whos losing it with somebody, whos going overboard, who has their knee on their neck and theyve lost their temper and their perspective. That deputy is allowed to go over and pull that person off. Theyre allowed to intervene and stop that interaction, and they will not be disciplined for it.In fact, that ABLE training, which is an eight-hour training model for every deputy, has already generated many, many commendations and coins and accolades to people who have intervened. Its working and theyre doing it and thats why our deputies are trained, Hey, dont let it get out of hand, and dont allow people that outrank you in any kind of way to do it when you know its wrong. Are cops on a power trip?Well, you know what? I think what cops are is, theyre stressed, honestly. I think theyre incredibly stressed. I mean, were working long hours. My deputies here have been forced to work mandatory overtime, which means, hey, youre getting ready to get off work and you just get told, No, you got another eight to do. I mean, thats hard. And they see things that you cant unsee, right? And theres always the layer of you can lose your life. I mean, lets just put that in perspective for police officers, right? And thats something else that I brought to this model, is we have a very robust officer wellness model, because thats something that weve never paid attention to. We want to make sure that these men and women have someone to call, that they have counseling at their fingertips, right? That they are able to say, Hey, Im struggling and I need help. Because you do. Its a hard business, its a very harsh business. And our officers, you know what? They take that oath and they mean it: I will put my life down because of the greater good. And I would like the public to please keep that in perspective, realize that police officers are stressed, and they become more stressed if they think you are putting them in more danger than they need to be in. Theres some bad actors, yeah, but its up to the leader to weed those bad actors out, hold them accountable and get rid of them. You have a stellar resume in several aspects of law enforcement. You entered the Criminal Justice Program at the University of Cincinnati after high school and started out as a jail service deputy. You were captain of the Ohio training academy, the lead hostage negotiator for your department, captain of the honor guard, plus youre an accomplished self-defense instructor, and more. Which one of your jobs has been the most satisfying and why? That is a hard question. And, hey, I commend you on getting all those words right, because thats a lot (laughing). But you know what, I will tell you, when I was a training commander, that was just so incredibly rewarding and significant because I was training up those brand new people. Thats their first look at the system, right? Theyre coming in, theyre 20-something years old. Some of them out of the military, and some of them bring in great skill sets, and some, you know, are just starting out. But I super-enjoyed that I ran with them. I ran with every Academy. Im a physical fitness person and physical fitness instructor, etc., and I ran right alongside of them, three to five miles a day whenever we worked out. And that was 100 academies that came under my purview and I enjoyed that, because I was molding those men and women. When you first started in the sheriffs department, you were a jail service deputy. Whats your most vivid memory from those early days working your shift? My vivid memory is the fact that I found out just how greatly people struggle. You know, I found out from watching these men and women come into jail in that era just how little leg up they had in life, right? I watched these women come in who we released right back out to their pimp, right to the men standing outside that are getting ready to run them right under the bus again. I watched people come in that are in just such bad health. I learned a lot about mental illness. One of my most poignant stories is escorting the nurse around to a locked-in woman who was just pleading with the nurse, Please make the voices stop. Please, please make these voices stop. And you know, the thing I learned there is the nurse could not have been more kind to her, and spoke to her, and just it still brings tears to my eyes. It impressed me. And the nurse said, Im going to help you with this. I need you to take this pill, and did help restore her, and treated her with such dignity. I never forgot that. And I thought to myself, Thats the model Im going to use. I was in my early 20s, and it was very significant.Have transgender inmates been a source of tension at Hamilton County and how have you dealt with the issue? You know, I havent really had any sources of true conflict regarding the transgender population that might come into this jail. Ive created a transgender policy that I ran through HRC, and Ive had attorneys from their organization look at it and give me the suggestions Im going to follow. Were very conscious in this jail that we treat people with respect. As Sheriff and in your other roles, youve been on the front line of the fentanyl crisis. What have you witnessed? Well, Ive witnessed tragedies. Ive witnessed women who are not able to head up their households, who are addicted to drugs. And also, of course, men, but realize that the women that come into this jail have children, right? And they are oftentimes the lone parent in those situations, and when they are getting high and theyre not able to take care of their business, that is going to affect and trickle down to what the children are doing. And were talking about youth violence, were talking about kids that dont have any parents, that dont have direction. And, of course, the deaths. I mean, my God, the hundreds and hundreds of deaths. Its just its incomprehensible. You just cant absorb the sadness of it. Its too much.I have deputies that are out there day-to-day administering to those people. We carry Narcan. I have Narcan in my personal car, okay? And we do revive people, because Im telling you, someday that person you revived is gonna improve, and theyre gonna come to their senses and realize, Hey, I have real responsibilities here for my children, and I have things that I have to do. Would you support a form of mandatory national service for young people in the military, or another form of public service, like the Peace Corps or Teach for America?I absolutely would. Id support that. I think thats a great endeavor, honestly. You know, you learn so much when you really work with people. Its one of the things that I was blessed with. You run a major county government department with an energy-intensive infrastructure. Whats the single most important thing the world should do to address the climate crisis? Oh, wow. First of all, youre getting a little bit above my pay grade (laughing). But I am going to say we need, all of us, collectively, need to respect nature. We need to respect the fact that we right now still have some trees left, right? That we have some species of animals and fish and frogs and all the things and how that all connects to the ecosystem. Respect nature and the rest is going to come.Youre married and you live with your wife Christine and your two dogs in Cincinnati. What can you tell us about her, how did you meet, and who proposed to whom?Oh my gosh, thats great. She is the most fabulous person I know, and I met her some 12 years ago. I knew, honestly, I knew the moment I met her, I wanted to marry her. We met at a party, just a random meeting at a party, and I looked across the room, and there she was, and I thought, I want to marry that woman. And Im kind of like that. I get vibes, and I do pretty well with that. And I proposed to her in probably six months. That surprised her greatly. We thank God every day that we found each other. Shes absolutely beautiful.Have your dogs ever misbehaved enough to put them in doggie jail?Oh my gosh (laughing). I have a little Min Pin, okay? And anybody thats ever owned a miniature pincher knows that that dog runs the household. I wouldnt put her in jail, I would take her out, sit her in my truck with the windows down, and she could sit out there for a while. She really enjoys that. Whats the best thing about serving the constituents of Hamilton County as their sheriff?Well, I tell you what Im most proud of, and the best thing is, is that people talk to me. They approach me. Im out and about a lot, you know. And people who have been formerly incarcerated, homeless people, people who have struggled in life and everything, they know me, and they feel very free to approach me and talk to me, and they have conversations with me everyone in Hamilton County but Im very proud of that because I dont know how many law enforcement leaders will get approached by people who were formerly in their custody and just have conversations with them, you know. Theres things I appreciate about you no matter who you are.Hey, I want to thank you for allowing me to be so candid. Im typically not always this candid, but you kind of said, Hey, its sort of free-wheelin, and so I felt good to just be myself. So, thank you for that. I hope to meet up with you soon.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
