What we can learn from the Lavender Scare of the 1950s
While most people are familiar with the Red Scare of the 1950s, theLavender Scarewas a lesser known but equally dangerous part of this period. During the Red Scare, federal workers were interrogated, fired, and some, including Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, were evenexecutedwith the justification that the government was rooting out communist spies. The full extent of the Lavender Scare is still unknown, asdocuments related to the period still hadnt been released to the public as of 2017.What LGBTQ+ Life Was Like Before the Lavender ScareTo understand how the Lavender Scare came about, its important to first look at the period just before. In many ways, the 1920s and 1930s were agolden age for LGBTQ+ Americans. After World War I, the Roaring 20s welcomed a new period of cultural and sexual freedom. With a booming economy and a renewed zest for life, the once rigid rules for American society began to loosen up. LGBTQ+ spaces flourished and nightlife and speakeasies were a common meeting point for these communities. Movies, songs, and other forms of entertainment increasingly featured LGBTQ+ themes and charactersand the general American public began hearing about LGBTQ+ topics for the first time. The BacklashIn 1934, theHays Codewas introduced to silence any content that wasnt deemed wholesome, moral, and correct thinking. It ordered that no film should lower the moral standards of those who see it and that the sympathy of the audience shall never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil, or sin. This included such acts as sex (or even kissing that was a little too passionate), mocking religion, and illegal drug use.It also banned interracial romances as well as any and all topics related to LGBTQ+ people. This new morality standard set the scene for the late 1930s through 1940s, as church leaders and government officials sought to control public morality. Though World War II made the government focus on a unified country above all else, when it ended, so did the remaining tolerance for LGBTQ+ individuals.Timeline of the Lavender ScareThe Lavender Scare was a joint effort by different branches of Americas government to target and remove LGBTQ+ employees from the federal government. The end of World War II in 1945 marked the start of the Cold War. Suddenly, communists were the boogeyman of American living rooms. Within the next decade, everything changed for LGBTQ+ Americansparticularly those in the federal workforce.1946-19491946: Congress passed abudgetwith a rider that allowed the secretary of state to dismiss any federal employees for the sake of national security.1947: The U.S. Park Police began aSex Perversion Elimination Programwhich targeted gay men for engaging in consensual same-sex relations.President Truman also passed an executive order that demanded loyalty from federal workers and targeted anyone who displayed immoral conduct.1948: Congress passed a law for the treatment of sexual psychopaths that defined sexual psychopaths as a person, not insane, who by a course of repeated misconduct in sexual matters has evidenced such lack of power to control his sexual impulses as to be dangerous to other persons because he is likely to attack or otherwise inflict injury, loss, pain, or other evil on the objects of his desires. The acts targeted by this law included indecent exposure, sexual acts involving children, prostitution, and sodomy.Despite the statement that a sexual psychopath was not considered insane, they were listed as a patient throughout the act, were examined by psychiatrists to determine if they fit this term, and committed toSt. Elizabeths Hospital(formerly known as the Government Hospital for the Insane) if they were found guilty. There, they could be held until the Superintendent of the hospital determined that theyd sufficiently recovered.1950By 1950, LGBTQ+ Americans and communists were becoming increasingly linked by politicians who saw both as godless, going against traditional family values, and morally weak or psychologically disturbed. Though amemoto the secretary of state outright stated that there was no evidence to support the claim that LGBTQ+ people were any threat to national security, it went on to add that the tendency toward character weaknesses still made LGBTQ+ employees unsuited for work in the federal government.February: Senator Joseph McCarthy made a now-infamous speech claiming to have the names of 250 known communists who were currently employed within the state department. Of these, two were suspected communists simply because they were identified as homosexual.March to May: TheWherry-Hill Investigationwas a committee of two who sought to create a procedure to identify and fire moral perverts and prevent them from being hired or rehired by the federal government. During this period, a supposed90 out of 100suspected LGBTQ+ people resigned, which the committee took to mean a larger scale effort would yield more substantial results across the government.June: The newly created Hooey Committee took over where the Wherry-Hill Investigation had left off. They led unprecedented surveillance of employees who were suspected to be LGBTQ+ andprovided inputinto how to legislate a master database of identified LGBTQ+ people.December: The Hooey Committee submitted a report to the Senate encouraging federal agencies to aggressively enforce policies regarding immoral conduct. This report laid the groundwork for decades of further discrimination by declaring LGBTQ+ Americans national security threats simply for their sexuality.1952 to 19531952: The American Psychiatric Association classified homosexuality as a sociopathic personality disturbance. This was not changed until decades later.1953: President Dwight D. Eisenhower issuedan executive orderthat barred any employees suspected of being LGBTQ+ from all levels of the federal government. This order stayed in effect until the 1960s.Progress Since1975:The Lavender Scare officially came to an end when theU.S. Civil Service Commissionreversed the ban, ensuring that LGBTQ+ people could no longer be barred or fired from the federal government because of their sexuality.1993: President Bill Clinton signed the policydont ask, dont tell, which ended the ban on LGBTQ+ military members but required them to keep their sexual identity secret.1998: Clinton issued an executive order removing most remaining limitations for LGBTQ+ federal employees.2011: Dont ask, dont tell was repealed.2017: President Barack Obama officially repealed Eisenhowers executive order banning LGBTQ+ employees from the federal government. Secretary of State John Kerry also made aformal apologyto LGBTQ+ federal employees, saying, These actions were wrong then, just as they would be wrong today.Lasting ImpactsThroughout the Lavender Scare, between10,000totens of thousandswere fired from federal employment, though the true impact is difficult to estimate, as anyone who was not fired was required to keep their identity a secret in order to stay employed. Those who were fired often faced unemployment or underemployment, as they were barred from federal jobs and faced discrimination and exclusion in the private sector.Guilt by associationmeant that even those who admitted to knowing LGBTQ+ people became targets during this period, which further isolated the community. According togovernment archives, Suicide was not uncommon. Some of these tragedies we know about; others remain forever hidden because obituaries typically omitted the cause of death in such cases.Could History Repeat Itself? In many ways, weve once again been living in a golden era of LGBTQ+ acceptance. From the repeal ofDont Ask, Dont Tellto the2015 Supreme Court decisionthat affirmed the right to same-sex marriage, the 2010s saw huge strides in LGBTQ+ rights.By 2022,61% of Americanshad a positive view of the legalization of same-sex marriage, a total reversal of surveys from as recently as 2004. InFebruary, Gallup announced that9.3% of Americans now identify as LGBTQ+, a number which has doubled since 2020, suggesting that an increasing number of people are comfortable being out. However, with progress also comes backlash.Over the last two years, the American publics acceptance and support of transgender individuals hasnoticeably decreased. While the majority of Americans still support protections for transgender people in jobs, housing, and public spaces, more than ever believe that schools teaching anything related to gender identity should be illegal.Given this national shift, its perhaps not surprising that78% of LGBTQ+American adults expect President Donald Trumps administration to negatively impact those who are transgender, and 71% expect the same for the rest of the queer community.January 2025On his first day of office, Trump signed anexecutive orderthat claimed to defend women from gender ideology extremism and restore biological truth to the federal government. This orderincluded but was not limited to:Defining Sex:The order declared that there were only two sexes (male and female) and that gender identity would not be acknowledged or factored into any nondiscrimination laws.Federal Identity Document Gender Markers: It removed the X designation for non-binary individuals and required that any future passports, visas, or Global Entry cards (including renewals) use the sex assigned at birth regardless of legal gender on other official documents. It also designated that the Office of Personnel Management shall ensure that the records of Federal employees reflect their sex assigned at birth rather than their gender.Dismantling LGBTQ+ Discrimination Protections: The order encouraged agencies to ignore the previously established interpretation of the 2020 Supreme Court decision (Bostock v. Clayton County), which prohibited discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals in the workplace, educational institutions, housing, health care, and more.Bathroom Separation:It stated that agencies should take appropriate action to ensure intimate spaces, such as bathrooms, were designated by sex assigned at birth rather than gender identity. It also specified that officials prioritize investigations and litigation related to a persons right to single-sex spaces in the workplace.Remove Federal Funding for LGBTQ+ Topics:Trump halted federal funding that was in any way related to LGBTQ+ topics or individuals. (However, since then, the courtshave stepped in to indefinitely block this move.)Remove Documents Related to LGBTQ+ Topics: Ordered agency heads to promptly rescind all guidance documents inconsistent with the requirements of this order. This includes but is not limited to documents such as, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions Enforcement Guidance on Harassment in the Workplace, U.S. Department of Education Toolkit: Creating Inclusive and Nondiscriminatory School Environments for LGBTQI+ Students, Supporting Intersex Students: A Resource for Students, Families, and Educators, and Supporting Transgender Youth in School.Removing References to Gender in Federal Agencies:The order instructed federal agencies to remove all statements, policies, regulations, forms, communications, or other internal or external messages that promote or otherwise inculcate gender ideology. This led to several federal agencies ordering theremoval of pronouns from employee email signatures.Transgender women moved to mens prisons:The order called for all prison occupants to be housed according to their sex assigned at birth, meaningtransgender women were to be moved to mens prisons.Trump directed the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to end all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mandates, policies, programs, preferences, and activities.Within his first week, Trump reinstated and expanded theban on transgender Americans serving in the military. Since then, thePentagon has announcedthat it plans to create a procedure to identify transgender service members and discharge them from the military within the next thirty days.In amemo, Pentagon leadership stated that any diagnosed history (past or present) or exhibited symptoms of gender dysphoria makes a person incompatible with military service. It also states that service members must meet high standards of readiness, lethality, cohesion, honesty, humility, uniformity, and integrity and that this is inconsistent with the medical, surgical, and mental health constraints on those with gender dysphoria. On January 29, Trump issueda new executive orderthat characterized discussion of LGBTQ+ topics in public schools as radical, anti-American ideologies. The order warned of potential prosecution of any teachers or officials who mentioned such topics to children, falsely characterizing them as sexually exploiting minors by acknowledging their pronouns and gender identity. It also instructed schools to promote patriotic education and reestablished the1776 Commission on Promoting Patriotic Education, which was previouslycriticized by the American Historical Association.February 2025On Feb. 25, Christopher F. Rufo, a City Journal writer, shared screenshots from employee chats that took place within the National Security Agency (NSA) employees internal system. These chats were within LGBTQ+ employee resource group meetings and spaces, discussing topics such as gender transition surgery and polyamory, according to Rufo. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard stated on X that these workers had been identified and that action is underway. The same day, she told Fox News that she put out a directive today that they will all be terminated and their security clearances will be revoked. According to Deputy Chief of Staff Alexa Hennings post on X, all intelligence agencies were told to identify employees who participated in the chatrooms and to terminate their employment and revoke their security clearances.March 2025As of March 11, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) reported there were 511 anti-LGBTQ+ bills in the U.S., 449 of which were advancing beyond their initial introduction, and three of which had already passed. At 74 bills, Texas has the highest number of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation currently being introduced or advanced at the state level. One suchbillwould make it a felony to use anything but your sex assigned at birth on public documents or employment records, punishable with fines up to $10,000 and up to two years in prison. On March 4, President Trump gave thejoint address to Congresswhere he highlighted his term so far, including his executive orders aimed at LGBTQ+ individuals. He stated that weve ended the tyranny of so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion policies all across the entire federal government, and indeed, the private sector and our military. He also focused on transgender people at times, saying that one of his executive orders was banning public schools from indoctrinating our children with transgender ideology. What You Can Do to Resist a Future Lavender ScareFor those wondering what can be done, here are a few actions individuals can take to protect themselves and their communities:Keep your community safe:Most social media and messaging apps are not a safe place for discussing LGBTQ+ topics or organizing efforts. For written communications, switch to apps like Signal which focus on privacy and arent in the current administrations pocket. When in doubt, focus on in-person communication outside of federally run buildings.Make your voice heard: There has been a rise in backlash against legislators recently, from huge turnouts attown hallsto good, old-fashionedprotesting. Apps like5Callshave simplified the process of reaching out to Congress and are a great, low-energy, low-time-commitment way to get started.Strengthen your community: Now is the time to seek out LGBTQ+ spaces and find the others in your area who are facing similar challenges. When governments fail us, its our friends, family, neighbors, and community members who stepup to help. The post What we can learn from the Lavender Scare of the 1950s appeared first on News Is Out.

Auntie's Guide: Disclosing your trans identity with confidence
The Allure of the Butterfly GardenI visited a local museum's butterfly garden on a lazy Sunday afternoon. After exploring the gaming exhibitions and a doll collection, walking through the garden felt like a dreaman enchanting forest as these spritely creatures fluttered about. The stark contrast between the warmth of the enclosed garden and the somewhat frigid temperature outside made it even more alluring.Visitors also have the chance to see butterflies emerge out of their chrysalises. It's taken me nearly four decades to see this process happen, and sadly, I'll have to go there again for another opportunity. Though the internet is riddled with videos of this occurrence, I can only imagine the wonder and beauty of seeing a butterfly emerge in its new form. After all, I did something very similar many years ago. No wonder butterflies have become a potent symbol of the trans experience. Like a butterfly emerging out of its shell, trans folks know all too well the power of metamorphosis and self-discovery. Disclosure has the potential to further elevate our transformation. What is Disclosing?Merriam-Webster defines disclosure as the "act or an instance of making known something previously unknown or concealed." I prefer to think of it as a butterfly unfurling its wings to reveal its new, transformative self, the act of identifying as trans to a person or group. Whereas clocking reveals one's identity unwittingly, disclosing is quite the opposite. It allows a trans person to acknowledge our identity on our terms.Whenever Auntie went out on the town with friends, there were occasions when I conversed with the stranger next to me. Sometimes, it complemented our outfit choices; other times, we discussed plans for the upcoming weekend. Then there were occasions where a conversation arose after a gentleman sent over a drink or shotsthough, I wished it were snacks. The conversation could be nothing more than an introduction with harmless flirtation. But then there are moments where a gentleman asks for my number. Or more. That's when I felt my insides twist and turn. Why Choose to Disclose Your Transness? Can disclosing be considered gender-affirming care? Well, sadly, I'm not a professional doctor. But I can attest disclosure is a form of affirmation. Even if people assume you're trans, speaking your identity into truth affirms your transness even more.It can also build genuine friendships and relationships. I've been pleasantly surprised how disclosing has formed social bonds beyond the community. And not the "Oh, I have a Black trans friend" type, either. Genuine friendships are built on wanting to learn, support, and understand each others' experiences. And through these friendships, disclosing helps find those who will genuinely support and validate you. We live in an increasingly hostile world. Though it may be fearful to reach out to find a friendan ally, a fellow agitatorwe need networks that affirm and protect us from the outside. Why Not Disclose? There are many reasons some may not choose to disclose. First and foremost, safety. I acknowledge my privilege of living and writing from a blue state with protections for my gender identity. Transphobia is rife in many communities regardless of political leanings, but even worse in communities and states where trans safety and dignity are not guaranteed. While some may have the resources to move to safer areas, those without have to continue living in areas where being trans is met with fear, hostility, and violence. "Going stealth" is often the best way to survive. Some may choose not to disclose due to personal boundaries. Like a butterfly, disclosing can make one feel highly vulnerable once revealed to the world. Preferring not to disclose isn't quite going back into the proverbial chrysalis. Still, it allows us to reaffirm our right to privacy even in our most intimate relationships. Non-disclosure also applies when it comes to the fear of discrimination or rejection. Not every person works in a trans-affirming job; not every person lives in an area where transamorous relationships could thrive. The fear of being discriminated against when it comes to employment, housing, medical care, or relationships based on gender identity still runs high.Disclosing is an act of bravery. But bravery does not equate to living an easy or "soft" life. When and How Should a Trans Person Disclose? When and how to disclose your identity depends on several factors, from navigating workplaces to a budding friendship or relationship. But remember, these factors are based on your comfort and willingness to disclose to others. As for Auntie's advice, I have some tips for preparing, assessing, communicating, and evaluating when disclosing to someone.Or, as I like to call it, here's how to P.A.C.E. yourself:PreparationPrepare and practice what you want to say.Only disclose when you feel ready and comfortable.Set boundaries for the conversation.Don't feel pressured by others.AssessAssess a safe place for the conversation. Sometimes, a private place can be ideal; other times, it is more comfortable in a public setting where other people are present.Consider the timing, environment, and the person you're considering disclosing to. Sometimes, it is fitting to disclose at dinner, and other times, during or after a movie or show.Evaluate the level of trust and closeness in the relationship.Think about the person's past behavior and attitudes towards LGBTQ+ issues.CommunicateCommunicate clearly and directly, but also in a gentle and approachable manner. (The goal is to tell your story, not to lecture.)Consider the varying ways to disclose your situation, from verbal to written or through a trusted person.Use "I" statements to express your feelings and experiences.Be prepared to answer questions, but also set boundaries. (I choose not to answer sexual questions, regardless of intimacy.)EvaluateEvaluate the response and consider it when preparing to disclose. (Trust me, disclosing isn't a one-time thing.)Give people the time and space to process.Acknowledge your feelings, process your emotions, and practice self-compassion and self-care.Seek therapy or counseling if needed.Disclosing on Dating Apps: Is There Hope?Like every lousy ex, I have a love-hate relationship with dating apps. There are periods when I delete them entirely off my phone. Then, like a late-night "hey" text, I find myself downloading them again.Fortunately, in the digital dating age, disclosure is much easier and more convenient. Some apps, like Bumble and Tinder, allow you to disclose right on your profile, and there are apps like Taimi and Grindr where disclosure isn't necessary. But even though my profile mentions I'm a trans woman and proudly includes either the trans flag or "I AM TRANS" in capital letters, there are men who look at my pics more than what my profile says of me. The results range from immediately 'unliking' my profile to "Oh, my bad; I didn't know" to outright and unnecessary harassment. Even on dating apps, disclosing is difficult when trying to bloom.Fortunately, one app has devised an ingenious idea to remedy the situation.Last month, Hinge launched a new feature called Match Note. Made to support the needs of "underrepresented daters," the app worked with organizations like TransTech Social and Disability:IN to learn and understand our unique challenges. Now, users can provide a note to potential suitors by sharing private details automatically, even before a conversation begins. The hope, Hinge aims, is to provide "greater agency and control over their dating journey."I've tried this feature for about a week now. Honestly? The matches feel more intentional, and the repetitive task of asking if they've read my profile is gone. Sure, there have been a few trolls who want to "debate," but I prefer to let them argue with their friends and parents, not me. And then there's been some fantastic gentlemen along the way. One in particular set up a date at the nearby art gallery this weekend.Though a trip to the butterfly garden may be in order.Coming Out of Our ChrysalisI doubt we'll ever read about an actual butterfly's emotional growth. But it would be a beautiful book if they grabbed a pen and started scribbling down. It would be a tale of learning to find their true, evolved self. It would be a story of how they were told they couldn't dream of reaching the skies but, through wonder and determination, did so. It would be a novel of dragging themselves through the dirt to grow into something awed and adored.Over the years, the churning of my insides and the nervous building have given way to being calm and at ease. Partly, because I've P.A.C.E.'d so often, it's become like clockwork. But also because I've come to see disclosure not as a burden or weight to carry through my transition but as wingsones that allow me to live in the sun of my truth and the warmth of my authenticity. Like the graceful butterfly wings, I've learned that disclosure doesn't weigh me down but allows me to fly in the breeze of my new womanhood, living the unimaginable and daring the impossible. And, once my wings spread, I have no desire to put them away. So wherever you are in your journey, and whenever you choose to disclose, know that your transformation is always valid. And when you're ready to spread your wings, know that Auntie's here for you. You have to be able to make fun of yourself. Also communication I love a good communicator and nothing else matters if youre not open with the person that youre with. 8. Mad TsaiI definitely think taking care of your body is the most important thing. Being on PrEP and making sure you have all the materials to be safe is a must and I like doing a face mask. I feel like thats my kind of self care.7. Jari JonesMy self-care as a trans woman differs from other people in the community. In the morning time Im making sure Im centering myself and that I have the best outfit for me. Im making sure Im taking care of my mental and sexual health; Im taking my PrEP! I feel like when I check off those things from my list, Im able to go out in the world and be my best self.6. And I think that everyone can benefit from a new idea about sex.5. Johnny SibillyIt's important to feel good when you're going out into a vulnerable situation and, you know, putting on a shirt that you love, like a color that you love them. That makes you feel like a bad bitch.4. Dexter MayfieldA main advice that I would give to anybody entering into any dating space is to be open, because a lot of times, something that comes your way, you've never seen before you've never interacted with before, but for some reason, you vibe with it. Don't be afraid to explore that. Be open to whatever the universe may bring to you.3. Ryan Jamaal SwainI gave myself grace. I never considered myself to be perfect in any type of way. You can be a masterpiece and a work in progress at the exact same time.2. Jesse MontanaGet out there, say yes to more things, and just live your life, and just have no regrets, and have no fear. For everybody, just don't forget what we went through and be excited and just live your life to the fullest.1. Amanda Seyfried says she only exists to make the gays happy
We sense a potential mother!Amanda Seyfried's rsum speaks for itself. Mamma Mia, Jennifer's Body, Mean Girls, Les Misrables... there's simply too many legendary characters that this talented actress has portrayed on the big and small screens.Although her impressive career showcases a wide range of diverse roles throughout the years, one thing has been consistent since day one. The LGBTQ+ community has fallen in love with quite literally anything Seyfried has to offer and it's a blessing she doesn't take for granted."I just exist to make you guys happy! I've just been lucky to be part of these iconic movies. I'm an ally and we all enjoy the same things. It's hell out there, especially right now. We have these touchstones to fall back on. We're more alike than we are different, even in this f'ed up country," Seyfried tells PRIDE. See on Instagram With so much chaos happening politically around the world, Seyfried is well aware that her renowned filmography brings peace and escapism to people who could really use it at this time."We can overcome the bulls***. We can actually enjoy each other and what art has to offer. Now more than ever, you've got to click on Mamma Mia or Clueless or Troop Beverly Hills. We are living in a world where we have to rely on these movies more than ever and Mamma Mia just happens to be one of them. Thank the Lord for putting me in that movie and for putting Cher in the second one!"Speaking of escapism, Seyfried's latest role in the thrilling new Peacock series Long Bright River tackles heavy topics that'll be sure to resonate with audiences dealing with very real struggles in their personal lives."I'm always looking for a challenge. This was a pretty important story to tell. We've seen stories about the opioid epidemic and it hits all of us. It's a global thing. This perspective seemed really important and really responsible and really respectful of the community. I never want to stop telling stories about this crisis." It's one thing seeing it in the media. These are people and there's a community that really does care. We're not so different most of the time," Pinnock says."There is a healthy amount of dissociation and escapism. It's asking you to stay present with things that are uncomfortable. That's really powerful filmmaking. It has powerful messaging alongside all the suspense," Cummings adds."Everybody has their story. A lot of people will be able to relate to this dealing with loss and trying to make sure that your family feels the love that they need and deserve," Doman concludes.Long Bright River is streaming now on Peacock. 'Ted Lasso' is officially back for another season will there be a sapphic twist?
Ted Lasso is officially coming back for another season and the new focus could give the show another go at a sapphic storyline.Apple TV+ made the announcement on Friday morning via a press release that confirmed months and months of speculation."We all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to 'look before we leap,'" star and creator Jason Sudeikis said in a statement. "In Season 4, the folks at AFC Richmond learn to leap before they look, discovering that wherever they land, its exactly where theyre meant to be."Ted Lasso, which followed the titular coach (Sudeikis) moving to the UK to work with a struggling football club, allegedly aired its final episode back in March 2023. But even then, there were hints both within the narrative and from those involved with the show that there might be more stories to tell.Specifically, the season three finale saw Keeley (Juno Temple) pitching the idea of a womens team to club owner Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham). Although some initially wondered if this might open the door for a spin-off, Sudeikis confirmed season four of Ted Lasso will feature his character coaching a womens team. (@) It took the "feel good" series until the third season to get around to including any queer storylines or characters (or rather, to acknowledge that several of the existing characters had secretly been queer the entire time). So centering the show around a womans football club is no guarantee of sapphic inclusion, but considering there are so many openly queer female players in the sport, it would be a tragedy for Ted Lasso not to dive into that.Season three of the show introduced two queer storylines one that centered around AFC Richmond player Colin (Billy Harris) struggling with coming out to his teammates, and another that featured Keeley exploring her bisexuality with Jack (Jodi Balfour), a billionaire investor in her marketing firm.As much as we adored the idea of it, the execution was controversial. Ted Lasso was beloved, in part, for its messages of redemption and hope. Characters who repeatedly made terrible and even cruel decisions were given a chance to redeem themselves within the narrative. It was jarring, then, that Jack was ultimately painted as more of a two-dimensional villain. While she initially came across as a charming and supportive girlfriend, that abruptly shifted into something controlling and thoughtless. To add insult to injury, it felt as if Jacks failures with Keeley were explicitly used to contrast her ex-boyfriend, Jamie (Phil Dunster), working through his own redemption arc.Messy sapphic characters are absolutely delightful, and only portraying queer relationships as healthy or "good" gets tiresome fairly quickly. But in a show like Ted Lasso, this particular discrepancy stuck out, even if we all assumed Keeley and Jack were doomed to fall apart before the seasons end.So much remains unknown about season four of Ted Lasso, including whether Temple will return (shes reportedly still in talks). And there were certainly other controversial decisions throughout the second and third seasons that have some fans hesitant to celebrate its return. But in a time where relatable, humanizing stories about LGBTQ+ people are extremely important, were keeping our fingers crossed that Ted Lasso takes another run (or two, or three) at sapphic stories this time around and that it does so with the same thoughtfulness and care that meant so much to people when it began.

Gay horror comedy The Parenting is light scares but heavy on heart and dick jokes
Is there anything more terrifying and ripe for comedy than a weekend away with you and your partners parents? Only one thing that could make that pressure cooker more intense: A demon, of course. Or so Kent Sublette, writer of HBOs new queer horror comedy The Parenting believes. The film, which is now streaming on HBO Max, follows gay couple Rohan (Nik Dodani) and Josh (Brandon Flynn) as they face this watershed moment in their relationship. The couple gathers their respective families up for a weekend in an idyllic cabin in the country where, unbeknownst to Josh, Rohan is also planning to pop the question. Not intense enough? It just so happens that the house is already occupied, by a 400-year-old demon and the ghosts of its previous victims. The origin of this story actually came from Sublettes own personal experience. Its loosely based on a trip that my husband and I took with our parents when we first started dating, he tells PRIDE. It was wonderful. They got along, but a friend of ours let us use his house in Connecticut for three days. Three days is too long for that. So it was stressful. We would joke that the only thing that would make this more intense is if this house was haunted. He wasnt the only one to channel real-life experiences into this project. Dodani connected with the anxiety his character Rohan felt in bringing his Type A mother (Edie Falco) and silently imperious father (Brian Cox) into a house with Joshs more relaxed and classically Midwestern parents (Lisa Kudrow and Dean Norris). Meeting your partners parents is truly one of the most terrifying things in the world, no matter who you are, whether youre gay or straight or anything in between, he tells PRIDE. This movie is about...the way we turn into teenage versions of ourselves around our parents, or the desperate need for everything to go perfectly, or, like, the fear of the people we love maybe not loving the people were bringing into the family. Its a fairly universal experience, so the choice to center this story around a gay couple feels significant, and not lost on Dodani. Having a couple like Josh and Rohan at the center of it is really exciting, but at the end of the day it really is just like a relatable human story with a demon, explains. For his part, Flynn also pulled from personal experience in his role as the more laid back but prone to putting his foot in his mouth Josh. Im just a crass kid from Miami who says whatever, and has no filter, he shares with PRIDE. So, there were a couple of moments that I was just like, Oh, Ive been here before! While The Parenting features lots of cheeky humor dick jokes fly freely throughout theres actually something very wholesome about the whole endeavor. At its core, the film is about acceptance and family, both of the by birth and found variety. These are exemplified by Norriss character, Cliff, who is Joshs father and Sara, played by Vivian Bang, the couples chosen family who finds a way to insert herself into the weekend, where she belongs. Your chosen family are just as pivotal and essential, as your family, Bang shares with PRIDE, on the importance of her characters inclusion in the story. My friends are so meaningful to me. I have such good friends, and so Sara is literally the friend that everyone needs. Despite not receiving an invite to the weekend, Sara finds a reason to insert herself into it. I just understand Sara viscerally, just feeling so slighted for not being part of the family, when she knows that she belongs and shes gonna make a space for herself at the table. Or in this case, a house thats haunted by a 400-year-old demon, she says with a laugh. She acts as both a support system for the couple and often as a mirror when they dont want to face uncomfortable truths, whether thats being avoidant about things with their parents or accepting that theres an actual literal demon in the house.Driving home the theme of family and acceptance is Cliff who, in one of the quieter moments of the film, tells his son just how much he cares about him but also how much he admires him. Its incredibly sweet and moving and a moment that Norris hopes resonates with parents of queer kids. Hes very ham-handed, he doesnt have a filter, he talks a little too much, but the most important thing for me, for that character, was that he [does] love his son [and is] unconditionally and completely accepting of him, Norris tells PRIDE. That kind of drives him through the movie, because hes like, were going to make this weekend work. This juxtaposition of raunchy humor and heart was a big part of what made director Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins, Special) excited to come on board the project. This one reminded me of the movies I grew up with as a kid in the 80s. Ive always wanted to do something that was a little freaky and spooky. I grew up with Poltergeist and Creepshow and Beetlejuice and Gremlins and all of these kinds of freaky, subversive, funny, scary movies, and you dont see them as much these days, he tells PRIDE. When I read The Parenting, I instantly wanted to do it. I thought this was the perfect version of this kind of movie for me.Theres also a real sense of joy that radiates from the film, which Norris reveals started with true camaraderie on set. It was so much fun. We literally bonded the day we all landed there. I shared a house with Lisa Kudrow, and Parker Posey and Edie Falco were right around the corner. We just all hung out, cookouts, movie nights, game nights, just fun stuff. We would do all kinds of improv riffs, he recalls, adding, then get Brian Cox in there, and it was just, like no weird ego stuff at all. Everyone just appreciated and respected everybody, like, immediately. It was amazing, probably one of the most amazing off-set cast experiences that Ive ever had.But it wasnt just laughs for the cast of the horror comedy there were some scares as well. Flynn revealed that during filming they stayed in a supposedly haunted hotel, and one night they decided to see if they could make contact with its ghostly inhabitants. We did have a seance, Flynn reveals. We were living at this hotel called the Colonial Inn, in Concord, Massachusetts, and its haunted. Nik was staying in the brides suite, so we had the seance in Niks suite because the front desk person was a clairvoyant and brought along a witch with him. We tried conjuring her, but she didnt come. However, according to Bang, her costars did a better job communicating with the dead than they thought. I think we conjured some spirits, because I did have some experience with it, and now Im a total believer, without a doubt that there are some energies, she says. The attendant at the inn that we were in told me my wing was not haunted. And then he said, I think you guys conjured something because now it is. But thats not all: Bang says that after they attempted the seance, she began seeing signs of the supernatural in her room including fog and a mysterious ring of purple lights.Spooky? Funny? Yeah, that sounds about right for this charming horror comedy throwback. The Parenting is now streaming on HBO Max. Watch the trailer below.

Wisconsin conservative admits he was wrong about his anti-trans beliefs this was all it took
As anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is sweeping the nation, one man stepped up and proved that it is still possible to change hearts and minds.A video of an older man apologizing and admitting he was wrong about the transgender community is making the rounds on Reddit after he spoke out at a Wisconsin assembly meeting amid a heated back-and-forth about a bill to ban gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth.First of all, Id like to apologize to you people. I was invited here to give my support for Bill 104. I have very little knowledge of gay people and things like that there. So, when I came here, my eyes were opened, a retirement-age man named Larry said during the public comment section of the assembly meeting. from JustGuysBeingDudesBill AB 104 would ban gender-affirming care for anyone under the age of 18 and would stop health care providers from making medical referrals for medical care if done for the purpose of changing the minors body to correspond to a sex that is discordant with the minors biological sex, the Wisconsin Examiner reports. The March 12 meeting to discuss this bill that would stop doctors from prescribing puberty blockers or gender-affirming surgery for minors, ended up giving Larry a crash course in gender identity and instead of doubling down on his anti-trans beliefs, he listened and ended up switching sides of the argument. While Republican assembly members argued that the bill was necessary to protect children, Democratic State Rep. Renuka Mayadev pointed out that the Wisconsin government should be more concerned with how anti-LGBTQ+ hate has led to violence in the U.S.Theres a transgender man, who was tortured and assaulted and beaten to death. He was beaten because of the hate that people have, and I want to know why arent we protecting people like Sam? Mayadev asked, The Examiner reports. [The bill] is not solving any problems. Its meddling in the patient-doctor relationship. According to a 2024 study published by JAMA, teenagers who are prescribed puberty blockers and hormones have a high level of satisfaction, with 97% continuing treatment. It was this kind of information that helped to sway Larry.I was one of the critics that sat on the side and made the decision that there was only two genders, he explained to the assembly members. So I got an education that was unbelievable. And I dont know exactly how to say this, but my perspective for people have changed. So I dont want to take up no more of your time. Id like to apologize for being here, and I learned a very lot about this group of people. In the video, the audience can be heard clapping for Larry after his apology, likely because admitting to being wrong is difficult for most people who have dug their heels in on an issue. One of the most important things you can do in life is to be accountable, cryfmunt wrote in the videos comment section on Reddit. You have to admit when you're wrong or have made a mistake. Regardless of anyone else's beliefs, this guy saw something that changed his perspective and he admitted to it in probably the most public forum he will ever speak at. And on top of that he apologized. Imagine if everyone could do that.

Video game trolls players with 'lesbian toggle' that makes hilarious change to the game
Indie puzzle game Blobun has lesbians laughing because of a joke setting that is likely angering some straight players.Blobun has a lesbian toggle that allows players to eliminate all of its lesbian content. That seems like a bizarre choice from an inclusive game developer until you realize that Stephanie, the protagonist of the video game, is gay and so turning off the lesbian content means erasing her from the game, making it unplayable. No lesbians allowed? No game for you then!Jess, a video game collective who created Blobun, said the idea came after helping with a friend's video game ad campaign. It all started a while back with our friends game Buck Up and Drive, which features billboards with various fake advertisements, Blobun developer Jess said in an email interview with Polygon.Jess convinced Buck Up and Drive creator Fbio Fonte to add trans flags as possible advertisements and encouraged him to add a Pride toggle to the game that turned every billboard in the game into a Pride flag. Some people were angry about it, but on the whole everyone loved it and thought it was really funny, Jess said. But with Blobun, they took this a step further by making the game unplayable if the lesbian toggle is used. The feature ended up being so popular that in the demo they expanded it so that if its turned on, not only does Stephanie disappear from the game, but players cant view the credits, and Stephanies silhouette is even removed from the logo. Guys, gals, and nonbinary pals...we gottem, Jess captioned a photo of the lesbian toggle in a thread on Bluesky.warning!!!! our game has lesbians in it. Do NOT play Blobun on itch or steam!!! or you will see the lesbians.., they continued.Jess said that some people have been angry about the comical addition to the game, but most people think its funny. Its been really funny so far seeing peoples reactions, whether it be confusion because they didnt realize what the toggle was doing, laughing because they figured out exactly what the toggle was doing, or (in rare instances so far) being upset about it, Jess said. It was really important to us though, especially in the current political climate, to put this in the game both to represent ourselves, our friends, and many people out there as well as to filter out the kind of people we dont want playing our games anyways.

Kennedy Jr., who in the past has said that he believes poppers cause AIDS.Double Scorpio wiped its social media and website and replaced it with a statement posted on March 13, 2025, saying, "Double Scorpio has stopped all operations following a search and seizure at our offices by the FDA" and that the company believes the FDA has "performed similar actions" towards other manufacturers and sellers of the product."Thank you to everyone who has supported us these last eight years. Weve always cared about making an authentic product and being engaged with and supporting our community," the statement continues. "We are very proud that we managed to build a brand that people can trust, and we dont want to see that trust exploited. The links listed here will be the only channels where we will communicate from going forward. Thanks for everything and remember, keep supporting queer businesses, creators, and your local queens."According to news site Fast Company, several other merchants they spoke to confirmed other companies experienced similar crackdowns. Pac-West Distributing, one of the producers of popular poppers brand Rush, has also wiped its website, replacing it with a graphic showing the company's logo.Poppers, also known as alkyl nitrites, are a chemical that, when smelled, relax the smooth muscles in the body, including the sphincter muscles in the anus, and increase heart rate and blood flow, often leading to a sense of euphoria. They are a popular party drug, especially in gay communities. The Food & Drug Administration is an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services that "regulates clinical investigations of products under its jurisdiction, such as drugs, biological products, and medical devices." And until now, it has mostly stayed away from poppers, leaving them to operate in a legal grey area.In 2021, the FDA said it was "advising consumers not to purchase or use nitrite 'poppers' which can result in serious adverse health effects, including death." However, it never cracked down on producers in this way.The FDA is currently under the guidance of Trump's new secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.Kennedy is a known spreader of conspiracy theories, including that "HIV does not cause AIDS, that COVID-19 was designed to spare Ashkenazi Jews (those from Eastern Europe) and Chinese people, and that Lyme disease is likely a militarily engineered bioweapon," per The Advocate. In one video, Kennedy can be seen saying that AIDS was not a virus, but was spread through poppers use among gay men."The virus is a passenger virus, and these people are dying mainly because of poppers," he said. "A hundred percent of the people who died in the first thousand [with] AIDS were people who were addicted to poppers, which are known to cause Kaposi sarcoma in rats. And they were people who were part of a gay lifestyle where they were burning the candle at both ends."When asked about this statement in 2023, White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates told The Advocate that "AIDS is a horrible tragedy, and we can never insult the hundreds of thousands of Americans whose lives it has stolen with extreme conspiracy theories that dangerously undermine public health."Many health experts and LGBTQ+ advocates have spoken out against Kennedy's appointment, with the National LGBTQ Task Force saying in a statement: "Mr. Kennedy's approach to public health is not in the best interest of our communities, nor does he intend to eradicate critical issues to safeguard health and safety for us all.""We look to the Secretary of HHS to protect the health and well-being of all. RFK Jr. has consistently proven he is incapable of grasping, let alone upholding, the principles of equity and scientific integrity," a statement from Advocates for Trans Equality reads. "His disregard for scientific evidence and embrace of misinformation endangers vulnerable populations, including trans people, intersex people, people living with HIV, and low-income families relying on Medicaid."

6 sapphic reality shows, ranked by their level of chaos
With a new lesbian dating show, cutely titled You Hauled, on the horizon, its time to revisit some of the other series that have gotten us to this point. Sapphic-centered reality TV shows may be few and far between, but when they do hit our screens, they rarely disappoint. And like any good reality show, they tend to get messy. Sometimes really, really messy. So lets take a look back at some of our faves ranked by the amount of chaos they delivered, just the way it should be.1. 'I Kissed a Girl' (2024)Chaos Level: This Danii Minogue-hosted dating show that spun off from I Kissed a Boy was ultimately more sweet than chaotic. Contestants navigated first kisses, building connections, and, of course, some jealousy. But the focus was more on finding love than making a spectacle, and the drama rarely escalated beyond brief misunderstandings. If you're looking for more "aww" than "OMFG," I Kissed a Girl has you covered.Where to watch: Hulu2. 'Coming Out for Love' (2023)Chaos Level: Coming Out for Love featured 16 women attempting to win the heart of influencer Amber Whittington. And, of course, all the contestants lived under one roof in the process. There was plenty of drama to go around with this one, although it didn't quite match the chaos levels of some other sapphic reality shows. Where to watch: YouTube3. 'Tampa Baes' (2021)Chaos Level: Tampa Baes followed an extended friend group of lesbians in Florida. But while the trailer promises all the messiness that comes with a small, tight-knit community of sapphics, the show itself swung wildly between shocking drama and somewhat dull monotony, to the point that it was hard for viewers to know what to make of it. And with such a large cast, it was easy to start getting invested in a pocket of drama only to get swept away for a long interlude with other characters.Where to watch: Prime Video4. 'Candy Bar Girls' (2011)Chaos Level: Filmed in Londons legendary Candy Bar, this 2011 Channel 5 series followed the staff and regulars navigating the citys queer nightlife scene. Although there were plenty of heartfelt moments of authenticity throughout the show, its setting definitely kept things wild. Unfortunately, the bar itself got priced out and had to close its doors less than three years after the episodes aired.Where to watch: Unavailable5. 'The Ultimatum: Queer Love' (2023)Chaos Level: Netflixs The Ultimatum sees one person in each couple issue an ultimatum get hitched or get out. Adding to the intrinsic tension, everyone swaps partners for three weeks for a "trial marriage," before doing the same trial run with the person they came with. The Queer Love spin-off followed the same format, but centered entirely around women and non-binary folks. And yes, it was every bit as dramatic as you would expect. When are we getting a season two??Where to watch: Netflix6. 'The Real L Word' (2010)Chaos Level: Between messy breakups, tequila-fueled blowouts, and on-screen hookups, The Real L Word rose to truly legendary levels of chaos. Although it balanced some of the insanity out with the occasional "stable" couple just trying to do things like start a family or get ahead in their careers, this look into the lives of Los Angeles (and eventually New York City) sapphics will always be remembered first and foremost for its mayhem. And we wouldn't have it any other way.Where to watch: Paramount+

Pierre Poilievres Complete Track Record on LGBTQ Issues
Photo by Humberland. Design by Sam Donndelinger. Subscribe nowFor over 150 years, the United States has been Canadas closest ally. But in the last few months, that relationship has deteriorated as the Trump administration has imposed sweeping tariffs on certain Canadian goods, called former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau governor and threatened to annex the country. This unprecedented strain is occurring as Canada is on the precipice of electing a new leader. On Friday, former central banker Mark Carney was sworn in as Prime Minister. In the coming months, Canadians will decide whether Carney retains this position or if Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre will take over.Polls suggest the election will be tight. Uncloseted Media wanted to investigate both candidates track records when it comes to LGBTQ issues. While Carney has yet to publicly take a stance on queer matters, Poilievre has a colorful past. From flip-flopping on gay marriagewhich he now supportsto echoing the anti-trans rhetoric of the Trump administration and Republicans in the U.S., here is Poilievres complete track record.Early Life: 1990sWhen Pierre Poilievre is about 12 years old, his adoptive parents split up and his father comes out as gay. That was never a source of difficulty for him, Andrew Lawton writes in his 2024 biography about Poilievre. In a Toronto Star op-ed about the biography, columnist Andrew Phillips notes that its surprising there is not more information about this in the biography. Its hard to believe there isnt more to say about events that would be life-shaking for anyone.Member of Parliament: 2004PresentJune 28, 2004Poilievre is elected as a Member of Parliament, representing Ontarios Nepean-Carleton Constituency.April 19, 2005Video by House of Commons. As a conservative member of parliament, Poilievre speaks to the House of Commons against the Civil Marriage Act, which was intended to legalize gay marriage. It is an honour to rise today in support of the traditional definition of marriage. He continues his speech by accusing the Liberal Prime Minister, Paul Edgar Philippe Martin, of [dividing] Canadians with their obsession with imposing gay marriage.Poilievre frames the issue of legalizing gay marriage as being in opposition to the traditional family. He refers to a bishop who opposes gay marriage as pro-family. Despite Poilievres opposition, the Civil Marriage Act passes on June 28, 2005.Photo by Jake WrightDec. 7, 2006Poilievre votes in favor of a Conservative motion that seeks to overturn same-sex marriage by defining marriage as a heterosexual relationship while recognizing existing LGBTQ marriages. The motion is defeated by a vote of 175-123, with 13 conservatives voting against it.Member of Parliament for Carleton: 2020-2022Photo by Andrew ScheerJan. 17, 2020In an interview with the Qubeqois French-language publication La Presse, Poilievre clarifies that his position on gay marriage has changed: "I am in favour of gay marriage. Period. I voted against it 15 years ago. But I have learned a lot, like millions and millions of people across Canada and around the world. I see that gay marriage is a success. The institution of marriage must be open to all citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation," Poilievre states.Video via of Pierre Poilievres X account. Jan. 22, 2020Richard Dcarie, who was an advisor to former Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, makes homophobic comments during an on-air interview with CTV News. He says being gay is a choice and declares that the government has a responsibility to encourage the traditional values that we have had for the past years.Poilievre responds to Dcaries comments on X: The comments are as unacceptable as they are ignorant. You do not speak for Conservativesor for Canadians. Being gay is NOT a choice. Being ignorant is.Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada: 2022- PresentSept. 10, 2022Poilievre is elected leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. By tackling liberal inflation, we will put you back in control of your life and your money.Video courtesy of Global News. June 2, 2023During a press conference in Winnipeg, Poilievre is asked about a Ugandan law seeking to imprison LGBT people, as well as whether he plans to attend a Pride march. The Ugandan law is outrageous and appalling, responds Poilievre. We should continue to give refuge in Canada to LGBT people who are persecuted abroad.Poilievre goes on to acknowledge the beginning of Pride Month in Canada: I wish everyone a happy Pride month because our freedom is something in which all of us can take pride.July 2023At the Calgary Stampede, Poilievre poses for a picture with a man wearing a Straight Pride shirt. Straight Pride is a movement formed in response to the advancement of gay rights, emphasizing the importance of heterosexual relationships over queer ones. After news of the controversial picture spreads, Poilievre says he [doesnt] agree with the T-shirt."Photo courtesy of @BSpence1983s account on XSept. 9, 2023Poilievres Conservative Party approves two new party policies barring transgender youth from what the motion describes as "life-altering medicinal or surgical interventions." Poilievrewho, as party leader, is not obligated to adopt policies passed at the conventionrefrains from taking a clear stance. He says he will be studying them carefully and talking with our caucus members. When we've had a chance to do our homework we'll have more to say."Subscribe for LGBTQ-focused journalism.Sept. 2023In June, New Brunswick passes a policy that requires parental consent for students under 16 to be referred to by their preferred name and pronouns. In August, Saskatchewan follows suit, using the notwithstanding clausealso known as Section 33to pass the motion titled the Parents Bill of Rights. In response, a wave of protests break out across the country. While pro-LGBTQ groups feel these policies violate queer students autonomy and privacy, protestors condemn the sexualization of education and push for parents rights. In response, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau releases a statement on X: Let me make one thing very clear: Transphobia, homophobia, and biphobia have no place in this country. We strongly condemn this hate and its manifestations, and we stand united in support of 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians across the country you are valid and you are valued.Photo courtesy of Pierre Poilievres X account. In a reply to the post, Poilievre says Trudeau always divides to distract from all he has broken. Framing the issue of LGBTQ policies in schools as one centered around parents rights (a common strategy used in the U.S.), Poilievre accuses Trudeau of demonizing concerned parents.Parents should be the final authority on the values and lessons that are taught to children, says Poilievre. Trudeau should butt out and let parents raise their kids.November 2023In a video taken at a meet-and-greet in a Toronto suburb, Poilievre says to members of the Chinese-Canadian community that Justin Trudeau does not have a right to impose his radical gender ideology on our kids and our schools. What conservatives often label as radical gender ideology often refers to the acceptance and usage of students preferred pronouns and gender identity.Jan. 31, 2024Conservative Premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, announces a new plan to ban some elements of gender-affirming healthcare for trans kids. Smiths plan includes prohibiting puberty blockers and hormone therapies for those aged 15 and under, and it bans gender reassignment surgeries for minors aged 17 and under.Only eight chest surgeries were performed in Alberta for reasons of gender dysphoria from 2022-2023. Bottom surgeries were already restricted for minors nationally.Feb. 6, 2024Poilievre pledges his support for Smiths proposals. He says he [thinks] we should protect children and their ability to make adult decisions when theyre adults.Video courtesy of The Canadian Press.Feb. 7, 2024During a news conference on Parliament Hill, Poilievre is asked by a journalist to confirm, in the context of Albertas proposed policy, that he was against the use of puberty blockers for people under 18. He answers, yes. Its important to note that Smiths proposal would only ban blockers for kids under the age of 16.Photo by The Registered Nurses' Association of OntarioFeb. 2024The Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) issues an Action Alert titled, Hon. Pierre Poilievre, stop targeting transgender youth! RNAO urges Canadians to sign the alert that accuses Poilievre of echoing and amplifying anti-transgender views across the country. These views are ill-informed and dangerous to the health and wellbeing of some of the most vulnerable youth in our society, the report states. To receive new posts and support investigative LGBTQ journalism, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Feb. 21, 2024Poilievre states that trans women, who he refers to as biological males, are not to be permitted in womens sports leagues and change rooms. In response, Amnesty International, an NGO focused on human rights, condemns Poilievres statement: This shameful rhetoric [puts] trans and gender-diverse people at further risk; it obscures the realities of gender-based violence in Canada.Prime Minister Trudeau also condemns Poilievre, stating, Mr. Poilievre went off against the LGBT community again this morning. Let far-right politicians pick fights with trans kids, Trudeau continues. Shame on them.Feb. 21, 2024Egale Canada, a leading Canadian LGBTQ advocacy group releases a statement saying Poilievres transphobic comments were irresponsible and dangerous. Egale Canada urges Pierre Poilievre, and all of our political leaders, to immediately stop contributing to the spread of harmful disinformation. It is more urgent than ever that we all work together to take action to end the violence against 2SLGBTQI people in our country.March 2024A civil and human rights e-petition is put forward in the House of Commons by Liberal Member of Parliament Randy Boissonnault. The petition asks Poilievre to issue a formal apology for the anti-trans comments on Feb. 21. The petition received 238 signatures, less than half of the 500 signatures required to certify the petition.June 2024Poilievre has yet to appear at a Pride March, which has become a common tradition for Canadian leaders from all partiesincluding Justin Trudeau, Jagmeet Singh and even conservative Premier Doug Ford.June 3, 2024In a media statement, Poilievre says he disagrees with a member of his caucus, Arnold Viersen, who opposes gay marriage and supports abortion restrictions. "Canadians are free to love and marry who they choose. Same-sex marriage is legal and it will remain legal when I am prime minister, full stop, he says.He goes on to say that he will lead a small government that minds its own business, letting people make their own decisions about their love lives, their families, their bodies, their speech, their beliefs and their money. We will put people back in charge of their lives in the freest country in the world."Jan. 21, 2025One day after President Donald Trump signs an executive order proclaiming male and female as the only legitimate sexes, Poilievre says he is only aware of two genders. Poilievre suggests the Canadian government should not have a role to play in conversations about gender identity, stating we should have a government that just minds its own damn business and leaves people alone to make their own personal decisions.Timothy Caulfield, a professor at the University of Albertas Faculty of Law and School of Public Health, calls Poilievres comments ridiculous and adds that Poilievre is trying to align himself with the MAGA sentiment about gender. Caulfield also critiques Poilievre for politicizing LGBTQ rights: Its the Conservatives that have made this a wedge issue, as theyve in the past with culture war topics.Jan. 2025LGBTQ rights organizations in Quebec and across the country speak out against Poilievre, with many in the trans and nonbinary community fearful for their rights if he were to become Canadas next Prime Minister.Trans people are under attack to the degree that we havent seen for decades. And Ill say Im scared for my life right now, trans rights activist Celeste Trianon told CTV News.Additional reporting by Sam Donndelinger and Spencer MacnaughtonIf objective, nonpartisan, rigorous, LGBTQ-focused journalism is important to you, please consider making a tax-deductible donation through our fiscal sponsor, Resource Impact, by clicking this button:Donate to Uncloseted Media

Dr. Mimi Hoang on bisexual+ mental health, visibility and community support
57% of queer American adults identify as bisexual, the most common LGBTQ+ identity marker for Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z alike. With each subsequent generation, more individuals statistically identify as bisexual, with 15% of Gen Z reporting this identity. The particular challenges for this community are nuanced, and Dr. Mimi Hoang, known professionally as Dr. Mimi, has devoted her career to advancing awareness of these issues. As a psychologist, Dr. Mimi, who is Chinese and Vietnamese American, owns a private practice, where she specializes in working with LGBTQ+ Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) folks. I interact with lots of other queer, Asian-American women in my line of work, which is wonderful, she says.In her sessions, she addresses issues of identity, healthy relationships, and social anxiety. Ive worked with so many bi+ folks in the community. As a psychologist, I was always working with multicultural groups. I started to merge the two areas of my organizing and my work.Outside of her office, Dr. Mimi serves as the program coordinator of the LGBTQIA+ Affirmative Therapy Center at Airport Marina Counseling Services and is a therapy professor at the University of Southern California. She also serves on the board of Los Angeles BI+ Task Force, which she co-founded in 2008. The Task Force promotes education, advocacy, and cultural enrichment for the greater Los Angeles community. On May 3, the LA Bi+ Task Force will host the annual B+ Well Conference, a space for collective healing work for the bisexual-plus community. Dr. Mimis expertise also supports the review board of Fluid Health, an online sexual health platform for queer and trans folks needing information about their sexual well-being.I love keeping things interesting and having a variety of projects, she says with a smile.Reflecting on her own coming out journey, Dr. Mimi remembers, it wasnt easy. I came out in the late 90s and there was much less bisexual visibility back then.Dr. Mimi HoangIn response to this challenge, Dr. Mimi cofounded amBi, a bisexual social community, in 2006the first of its kind in Los Angeles. She credits her familiarity with leadership in school with the inspiration to start the group.Through this initiative, bisexual folks came together over shared struggles. They feel very invisible, especially if they are mostly monogamous or in a heterosexual-presenting relationship. It can result in a lot of self doubt and insecurity. When asked what she would say to folks struggling with biphobia, whether internal or external, Dr. Mimi encourages self-acceptance. Your identity, your attractions, are inside you, she says.In 2013, Dr. Mimi attended the first bisexual community roundtable at the White House. This was the first time an administration independently recognized issues facing the bisexual community. These issues are wide-ranging, including mental, physical, and sexual health disparities.Even today, coming out continues to be a primary concern for the bisexual community. Younger folks are getting a lot more exposure, and so people are coming out at earlier ages. Still, the stigma persists. You might be aware that there is a B in LGBTQ+, but it doesnt necessarily mean that it will be an easy road for you.The stigmatization extends to folks who practice non-monogamy or come out later in life. As of 2018, about 22% of bisexual folks surveyed regarding their relationships identified as non-monogamous. 71% of LGBTQ+ individuals surveyed by a 2024 Gallup poll came out before the age of 30, although among bisexuals, there is an age disparity among folks who are openly out as bisexualthose over 45 are less likely (18%) to be out to those close to them.It can especially be challenging if bisexual individuals come out while already in a monogamous relationship, says Dr. Mimi, which can lead to impostor syndrome.External biphobia is still very real. That can come from the workplace, friends, and even our romantic partners, explains Dr. Mimi. This can lead to depression and anxiety, and oftentimes abuse and body image issues, including eating disorders. You might be aware that there is a B in LGBTQ+, but it doesnt necessarily mean that it will be an easy road for you.Dr. Mimi HoangDr. Mimi also addresses the darker side of biphobia. There are issues of power and control in relationships, our sexuality is fetishized, theres jealousy, or theres slut-shaming, she says. People sometimes think that its fun and trendy to be bi, but we get stigmatized and sometimes even mistreated by our romantic partners. There is a higher risk of suicidality for bi and pan folks and higher rates of intimate partner violence for bi+ womenespecially with partners of different genders. This work, while admirable, does not come without challenges. Its hard to fight when you dont feel well, says Dr. Mimi, who emphasizes the importance of rest and community support in successful advocacy work.Dr. Mimi encourages the larger bisexual community to do the same. Find an affirmative therapist, find community. This is such an important time to go out and not be isolated. Call somebody, join a group, or start a group if you feel like youre strong enough to do it.I truly believe in mentoring and community and working on your mental health, Dr. Mimi says with confident optimism. Ive been able to continue my social justice work because Ive always done it with other people. I mentor others and I have been mentored myself. Having that guidance and wisdom passed along is helpful I can pass along my insights to others. That way, I can have a replacement when I need to take a step back and rest.Dr. Mimis works to make mental healthcare a safer and more accessible experience for queer clients by training new therapists on LGBTQ+ affirming care and providing sliding scale services to her clients. She is especially passionate about intersectionality in terms of health, wellness, and community. A lot of bi+ women are women of colormore representation of WOC in the bi+ community even though it may not seem that way in the media. While women make up the majority of bisexual individuals in the United States, women of color, particularly young, Black women, make up a significant portion of this group. This also accounts for a drastic increase in bisexual identification in the late 2010s.Being a bisexual woman of color comes with minority stresses layered on each other, Dr. Mimi explains. Its important to be aware of. Our community also comes with so much resilience and strength. There is so much we can learn from the badass bisexual of color who own who they are and resist, and embrace their own beauty and joy.Dr. Mimi offers two life coaching courses for bisexual+ folks looking to fully embrace themselves and their identity. Bi on Life and Bi on Love blend individual and community empowerment to create lifelong confidence and connections.Of the future of the bisexual-plus community, Dr. Mimi remains hopeful. It all starts from knowing who you are and coming to terms with that. The post Dr. Mimi Hoang on bisexual+ mental health, visibility and community support appeared first on News Is Out.

  • If Youre Lgbtq Your Healthcare Is At Risk And Experts Say Now Is The Time To Act
    WWW.PRIDE.COM
If youre LGBTQ+, your healthcare is at risk here's how to act now
LGBTQ+ individuals have long faced significant health disparities, but in 2025, the fight for equitable healthcare has taken on an even greater urgency. With the Trump administration rolling back protections and increasing attacks on queer and trans rights, National LGBTQ Health Awareness Weekrunning from March 17 to March 21isnt just about visibility. Its about survival. This years theme, Health Equity NOW!, is a demand for better access, better care, and better outcomes for LGBTQ+ people. But in an era where lawmakers are stripping away protections, how can queer and trans individuals prioritize their health? How do we fight back against a system that is actively working against us? PRIDE had a chance to chat with some experts who weighed in on how self-care, community support, and activism are all essential to resisting oppression. Heres what they had to say.Mental health and resilience in a hostile climateFor many LGBTQ+ people, mental well-being has more to do with survival than self-care.The onslaught of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, coupled with increased social hostility, has led to rising rates of anxiety, depression, and trauma among queer and trans individuals. When living in a climate of increasing attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, mental well-being is not just self-careits survival, says Elika Dadsetan, CEO and Executive Director of VISIONS, Inc, a nonprofit committed to building inclusive communities and fostering resilience in the face of systemic barriers. Resilience doesnt mean ignoring fear and exhaustion. Instead, it means building intentional practices that allow you to keep going despite them. Some of these practices include regulating the nervous system to counteract chronic stress. Grounding techniques, deep breathing, and movement-based practices like walking or stretching can help regulate stress responses, Dadsetan advises. Another key step? Limit exposure to harmful media. Staying informed is important, but doomscrolling fuels anxiety. Set boundaries around news consumption and curate social media feeds to include affirming and joyful content.Finding healthcare in a system designed to exclude youThe rollback of protections for LGBTQ+ healthcare access has made it even more difficult for queer and trans people to find affirming medical providers. In states enacting bans on gender-affirming care or restricting reproductive healthcare, access is disappearing. When I work with LGBTQ+ clients, particularly transgender individuals, one of the most distressing topics that comes up is access to affirming healthcare, says Cory Schneider, a psychotherapist specializing in LGBTQ+ mental health. People are terrified that they wont be able to get gender-affirming care or that their current providers will lose funding. And these fears are valid.Despite these barriers, resources still exist. Kiki Fehling, a licensed psychologist and expert in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), highlights several directories that connect LGBTQ+ individuals with affirming care. The LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory is a comprehensive directory with primary care physicians, dentists, therapists, OBGYNs, and more, she says, noting you can filter by gender, race, sexual orientation, location, and whether or not they accept insurance.Additionally, Inclusive Therapists focuses on serving LGBTQI+, neurodivergent, and disabled BIPOC individuals. Services like Folx Health and Plume also provide telehealth options for those in states with restrictive policies and work to ensure gender-affirming care remains accessible. Both Schneider and Fehling recommend these platforms. The power of community support and mutual aidWhen government institutions fail, LGBTQ+ people must turn to each other. Chosen family, community-based care, and mutual aid are more than survival strategiesthey are acts of resistance, says Dadsetan.Schneider agrees, emphasizing that queer people cannot endure this fight alone. When I train parents and educators, I hear the same concern: How do we create safety when the law is failing us? The answer is always community. Mutual aid is another critical aspect of survival. In uncertain times, financial and emotional mutual aid networks help redistribute resources and create safety nets for the most vulnerable, says Dadsetan. Whether its assisting with healthcare costs, housing, or legal fees, community support can make all the difference.Protecting LGBTQ+ youth from systemic harmLGBTQ+ youth are among the most vulnerable in this political climate, facing attacks on their rights in schools, healthcare settings, and even within their own homes. One of the biggest fears I hear from LGBTQ+ adults, especially parents and teachers, is: What happens to the next generation? says Schneider. With attacks on LGBTQ+ education and bans on gender-affirming care for youth, their well-being is at risk. But LGBTQ+ identities cannot and will not be erased.Fehling highlights the importance of intergenerational support. LGBTQ+ youth need trusted adults who can provide guidance, advocacy, and safe spaces for self-exploration, she says. Additionally, resources like GLSEN, PFLAG, and The Trevor Project continue to provide essential support for LGBTQ+ youth facing discrimination and isolation.Legal advocacy and knowing your rightsDespite federal rollbacks, LGBTQ+ legal protections still exist in many states, and organizations are fighting back against discriminatory policies. When clients come to me panicked about their rights being taken away, I remind them that while federal protections are under attack, state and local advocacy still matters, says Schneider. Organizations like Lambda Legal, the ACLU, and the National Center for Transgender Equality offer resources to navigate these challenges. For those in hostile states, preparing for legal and medical uncertainties is crucial. Now is the time to secure legal documents, Schneider warns. These next four years will require strategy, resilience, and unwavering support.Queer joy is an act of defianceIn times of oppression, finding joy can feel impossible, but experts insist it is one of the most powerful tools for resilience.Joy is not a privilegeit is a necessary counterbalance to oppression, says Dadsetan. Celebrating LGBTQ+ identity, culture, and history is an act of defiance against those who seek to erase it.Fehling echoes this, emphasizing that joy isnt just about feeling good. Research suggests that being part of a queer community significantly benefits mental health., she says. Its about surrounding yourself with people who love and accept you in all of your queerness. For those struggling in unsafe environments, even small acts of self-expression, like listening to queer music or reading queer literature, can be powerful. Preparing for the next four yearsThe next four years will be challenging, but LGBTQ+ communities have always been resilient. Experts stress the importance of balancing activism with self-care, ensuring that individuals dont burn out in the fight for their rights.Activism and mental health are inseparable, says Schneider. Dan Savage reminds us, During the darkest days of the AIDS crisis, we buried our friends in the morning, we protested in the afternoon, and we danced all night Keep fighting, keep dancing. This National LGBTQ Health Awareness Week is a reminder that taking care of ourselves is an act of resistance. From prioritizing mental health to securing affirming healthcare, from strengthening community ties to finding joy amidst struggle, every step we take toward our own well-being is a step toward collective liberation.

Former Disney star turned adult entertainer says she gets more respect now
For years, Maitland Ward was best known for her role as Rachel McGuire on Boy Meets World. However, since making the leap into adult films in 2019, the former Disney star says her career shift has led to more respectboth in Hollywood and beyond.I really think people treat me with more respect now, honestly, especially even in Hollywood right now, Ward told Fox News Digital. Im pitching my memoir into a TV format and talking with people. Theyre so respectful, and theyre so positive about my story, especially younger people and different people that I speak to in Hollywood and stuff. While some might expect backlash from transitioning from a Disney-backed sitcom to adult entertainment, Ward insists the reaction has been overwhelmingly supportive. See on InstagramI didnt get anybody coming out hating me for it or anything, she said. I really got a lot of positivity overall, which shocked everyone I knew. Everybody thought people were just going to rip me apart, and I was going to be judged and raked across the coals, but I got so much positivity.See on InstagramWard, who struggled with body image early in her career, says her experience in adult entertainment has empowered her in ways she never expected. She's also not the only Disney star to turn to adult entertainment, as Wizard's of Waverly Place actor Dan Benson turned to OnlyFans a few years ago after people sold his nudes as a way to take control of his own story. At the time, he said, Ive been having a tremendous amount of fun. Ive met a lot of really great people in the adult entertainment industry and its changed my life for the better. With that said, Benson also quit the platform in February 2025, saying, "Thank you to everyone who has supported me this whole time. I might go back to acting. I might just go and try and get a normal job and disappear. Just be a normal person. I dont really know. I hope I can remove some of the stuff that is already out there. So if youre thinking about doing this, just be thoughtful, because I know its going to be really hard.McGuire, on the other hand, has been in the industry since 2019 and doesn't seem to have any interest in slowing down.See on Instagram"Just to be naked by myself and be confident in my body and myself, I would never have been able to do that [before], she said in the Fox News interview. Porn has really given that to me, that empowerment, to be able to stand in my own skin, to be able to create projects that I want to create and be proud of, to go against the mold and do something that other people havent done or have been too scared to do and to have the courage and confidence to do that. Her work in the industry has also allowed her to take creative control over her career. Im creating full-length movies. Im doing things like making projects that I really feel passionate about, Ward explained. I work with a female director, who has been amazing. And I think people are always surprised by that, that two women are creating these long erotic, pornographic art pieces. And I think thats really special.Despite her past in mainstream television, Ward has made it clear that her future is fully in her own hands. Im able to create my own brand, my own content, the way I want to create it, she said. And for her, that sense of controland the respect that has come with itis more valuable than anything she found in Hollywood.

'The White Lotus' gets swarmed by morality police after this shocking brotherly moment
The latest episode of The White Lotus has people with delicate sensibilities shrieking and averting their eyes after two brothers shared a little smooch. The surprising kiss went down when Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) and Lochlan (Sam Nivola) were hanging out with Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon) and Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood). The two ladies kissed and urged the brothers to do the same so they did. (@) People shocked by the incestuous turn clearly havent been paying much attention to The White Lotus or even HBO in general. Last season of the popular show included something that initially appeared to be incest, although it was revealed to be a ruse. There were also plenty of other "incest vibes" that viewers called out during the season. Not to mention the fact that Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon have been two of the networks most popular modern shows, and both involve incest storylines deeply woven into the fabric of the story.Still, the weeks building up to this moment already had people acting as if they were going to be irreparably traumatized by fictional incest which, in turn, became an opportunity for others to point out how goofy that is. (@) "No, its just a movie. Its pretend. Youre an adult, you should know that." (@) "go watch Backyardagins if The White Lotus offends you" (@) "ITS A FICTION, NOT A MORAL TREATISE." (@) "its a television show" (@) "I thought everyone knew up front that this show is a satire with dark comedy mocking rich white people osea is the point of being obsessed with morbidity" (@) Despite the haters being loud with their virtue signaling, fans of The White Lotus who are able to differentiate between fiction and reality still had a good time with the episode. (@) "Gay incest, lorazepam withdrawals, white Christian woman judging in the background, this episode of white lotus has it all" (@) "the incest is actually happening HAPPENING #whitelotus" (@) "in a bar full of gay men cheering for the white lotus incest kiss" (@) One of the great things about weekly TV shows is that the stories are ongoing. They don't wrap up in a single episode. We don't know the intention behind this incest plot, where it's going, or what it's ultimately trying to say. Maybe it will stick the landing in an interesting way, or maybe it won't. In the meantime, folks are gonna enjoy watching two dudes kiss and the world isn't even going to explode in the process. And any viewers looking to only consume stories that portray things matching their personal morals should probably step away from content created for adults and airing on a premium cable network.

  • Send The Fit Turned Into Date Canceled But Who S Really In The Wrong
    WWW.PRIDE.COM
How 'send the fit' turned into 'date canceled' and kicked off an online gay debate
Lets be honest: Going on dates is totally terrifying, regardless of how you look or the mutual interest. A common fear is sharing something about yourselfsuch as what you intend to wear on a forthcoming dateonly to have your suitor either ghost you or just completely lose interest.Unfortunately, for writer/comedian Zach Zimmerman, the latter nightmare came to fruition after a date canceled on him after he answered the question about what he planned to wear on the date.In a tweet shared on March 16, Zimmerman screenshotted the suitor asking him to send the fit. After a short video showing it off, the person responded, Hey! Youre very attractive and Im not opposed to grabbing a drink but I dont think were going to be compatible honestly. In the tweet, Zimmerman captioned the interaction saying, I may never recover. Dude asked what I was going to wear and then cancelled the date. (@) With such a relatable and brutal story, youd think people would line up in support of Zimmerman, but instead his comments including things like u look like ur mom dressed u and Youre lucky to have gotten to ask for a date. If it were me, I wouldnt even ask you. Your outfit screams Broadway Queen. Im pretty sure you love Wicked. (@) We're not quite sure why loving Wicked is catching strays, but Zimmerman was quick to respond to the haters and addressed the backlash as best he could. (@) He also admitted he was away from home on a writing trip, which also limited clothing options like shoes. (@) In fact, so many people disapproved of his outfit that he wound up sending out a separate tweet saying, who knew everyone was so anti-plaid?? (@) Of course, not everybody came at Zimmerman sideways, and a number of comments were supportive of the comedian and his awkward dating experience. (@) For his part, Zimmerman has taken all of this in stride, even quipping that his mother did, in fact, buy his shorts and shoes, but he still put them on himself. (@) Check out some of the supportive comments below. (@) "The Hey! as if you arent already in an active convo is lowkey cruel" (@) "What was he going to wear? I wanna hear both sides of this" (@) "we'll never know" (@) "if being yourself is you sending videos and being funny and he cant take that, then he was never a guy you wanted to spend time with anyway" (@) "You are very handsome and your outfit and style is just fine. You are a very sweet person men can tell this, and if they turn you down its not always because of your looks or your style.. its simply because some people dont want to break golden hearts" (@) "thats HIS loss, not yours! you dodged a major bullet w that plan falling through, thank god it did! and ignore the losers in the quotes, none of them ever had a chance with you anyways so their word holds no weight. ur THAT girl and WILL find someone who sees that and values you" (@) "See Id have broken the date off just for him asking to see my outfit before agreeing to meet." (@) "Well date you. I mean everyone sane. Well date you gladly." (@) "Thats a different level of disrespecthe just lost out big time" (@) "Dont let then bully you. Live in your truth king" (@) "His shallow taste is his loss!" (@) "You look so good" (@) "Planned the fit for nothing tragic." (@) "Eh, you dont need someone that critical and unforgiving." (@) "To the people wanting to date someone based on what they wear, just get a life cause you clearly aren't thinking"

'Boo-hoo': MAGA supporter cries 'discrimination' after getting kicked out of Indianapolis bar
Trumpers who went out of their way to cause trouble for an Indianapolis bar are getting the viral attention they so desperately craved for better or for worse."I have a question," a womans voice says as she approaches the bar in the short video that has spread across social media. The bartender straight up tells her that they arent answering her questions and that she needs to leave because shes a Trump supporter."Dont you guys want our money?" she asks."No, actually we dont," the bartender responds. "Get out of my bar right now. Im not fucking around; get out of my bar."Another bartender suggests they could call the police if she refuses to leave, to which the woman behind the camera complains that "this is discrimination." Patrons off-camera can be heard bursting into laughter and clapping as the first bartender merely replies "Boo-hoo! Boo-fucking-hoo!" View on ThreadsAccording to News 8, the woman recording the video was Elise Hensley. She and her friends showed up to the bar on Friday night decked out in MAGA gear, and were shocked when they were asked to leave. She claims she didnt do anything that warranted that reaction, and returned to record a video and get the bartenders on the record stating that they were refused service because they were Trump fans. The bar tells a different story."On Friday, March 14th, a group of individuals visited Chatterbox and intentionally misgendered and harassed a Chatterbox employee, resulting in them being asked to leave by our staff," reads a statement posted to Instagram. "They they continued verbally assaulting our patrons and staff, threatened our established, and returned to record a video which has now been posted on multiple social media platforms."They went on to add that they "do not tolerate dehumanizing or disrespectful language or symbolism in our establishment" and "have a right, by law, to refuse service to anyone who disrupts our business."Independent publication Hoosier Enquirer said on X that they conducted their own investigation into the matter, which included talking to customers who witnessed the altercation. Their conclusion was that Hensley "attacked the bartenders while using homophobic slurs directed at the gay staff members."That hasnt stopped the online discourse from raging back and forth between those happily rallying around the bar and fellow MAGAs who continually fail to grasp the paradox of tolerance. Two-Spirit Influencers Speak On Indigenous Issues in Trump Times
Video by E. E. OliverSubscribe nowThis Thursday, March 20 marks the fourth annual Two-Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQQIA+ Celebration and Awareness Day in Canada. The day, which has not been made official in the eyes of the Canadian government, is meant to celebrate the diversity and resilience of Two-Spirit, queer, and trans-Indigenous identities. It was conceived by Indigenous scholar Harlan Pruden and is held in alignment with the spring equinox each year. This day is vital for raising awareness and educating the public on [the] Two-Spirit resurgence through demonstrations, proclamations, and community celebrations, says Martin Morberg, the program manager at the Two-Spirit Program at the Community-Based Research Centre.Ahead of this important day, Uncloseted Media spoke with Canadas Drag Race star and Two-Spirit activist Chelazon Leroux and Two-Spirit actor and influencer Haley Robinson about the problems their community faces in todays political climate. They speak about the misunderstandings many non-Indigenous folks have about their community and how they have seen societal conceptions evolve.Subscribe nowWatch the full interview above or read the transcript here:Spencer Macnaughton: Hi everyone, I'm here with Haley Robinson and Chezlazon Leroux, two Two-Spirit influencers. Guys, thank you so much for speaking with me and Uncloseted Media today.Chelazon Leroux: Yeah, thank you for having me.Haley Robinson: Hi. Thank you.SM: I think a lot of people watching this will have never heard the term Two-Spirited, honestly. What does Two-Spirit mean to you, and how is the idea of being Two-Spirited part of your identity?HR: For me, it means a person that walks in between two worlds, spiritually and culturally. In more basic terms, Two-Spirit is like an umbrella term of describing Indigenous identities of having both female and male spirit.SM: Explain a little bit more about what you mean having male and female identity.HR: It just means that I don't follow the Western ideals that came over during colonization. I see myself as someone who's kind of in between. I don't necessarily see myself as a female, I don't necessarily really see myself as a male, I kind of see myself as a person that's like in between that walks both worlds. So yeah, again, it's different for everybody because not every Two-Spirit person is gender diverse. We have straight, cis, Two-Spirit people. It all really depends on their identity and how they see themselves, but that's how I see myself as a Two-Spirit person.CL: I always like to start with the historic understanding. Two-Spirit was a word invented in 1996 in Winnipeg, Manitoba for a lesbian and gay Indigenous conference. The reason why they created this word [was because] they knew they needed an English word to describe this identity that we had known for in different tribes and different nations across Turtle Island. We knew there was differences that there was something in between man and woman, and each language has their own word for that. So they needed an English word so that we could start having these conversations. Two-Spirit came along as a really convenient word to describe to settlers and allies about what this meant.SM: So in journalism, at least, news organizations here in the States will say LGBTQ, and north of the border, they'll say 2SLGBTQ+ sometimes, right? How do you feel about incorporating 2S, as in Two-Spirited, into the acronym that's used at large? Is that important? Should it be incorporated?HR: A lot of people thought that adding Two-spirit was honoring the Indigenous people who were first here. But then also in some communities, they don't believe that Two-Spirit really fits in with the LGBTQ community because it's its own cultural, spiritual thing. So, I don't personally use 2SLGBTQ. I usually say LGBTQ+, and then I say I'm also Two-Spirit. I just like to keep them separate because being Two-Spirit is part of a cultural identity.SM: And you don't necessarily relate the cultural identity of being Two-Spirited to the cultural identity of being LGBTQ, you see them as separate?HR: Yeah, I see them as separate. There are Two-spirit people who are in the LGBTQ community, and there are Two-Spirit people who aren't. I like to personally keep them separate because even though they kind of wander between the same line, it's not necessarily on the same line.SM: What is the difference between Two-Spirit and identifying as, say, non-binary or even trans? There is a distinct difference, but can you explain it to somebody who might have no clue?HR: So nonbinary is essentially like you don't see yourself in the binary roles of the Western ideals. Two-Spirit is the same in that way, but it's again really taking a role in your Indigenous communities, taking up the roles of being an in-between person, a knowledge keeper, an educator, a healer, a medicine person. Whereas non-binary and trans, they're part [of] the LGBTQ community of not following that binary of Western ideals, but it's not necessarily connected to a culture.SM: The idea of stigma within Indigenous communities toward Two-Spirited folks. Is there any? And if so, how does that manifest?CL: The point of colonialism is to remove every piece of Indigenous identity. That was residential school and for those who don't know that was the act of government both in U.S. and CanadaU.S. they'd say boarding schoolbut removing children from reserves as early as four or five years old to go live on these religious funded and government approved/operated boarding schools that would abuse Native kids and strip their identity, cut off their hair, take off their regalia, abuse them for speaking language. So the mission statement was to kill the Indian within the child, but keep the child. And that was followed through with abuses: sexual, verbal, physical. It's a horrific story. And what that has done is incited trauma and religious understandings through abuse. For a lot of young boys, their first sexual experiences were abuses from priests. So their only understanding of queer intimacy or queer people is physical sexual abuse. So because of that, they don't know what a healthy queer person looks like. They don't know what a Two-Spirit person is because they were removed from community, and even the traditional understandings of Two-Spirit. So there's this identity that they weren't raised to know about and they only have abuse as a source of reference. So they project that.SM: Can you speak specifically about the stereotypes that folks have about Two-Spirited individuals that are really frustrating for you?CL: I'm at the intersection of drag, Indigenous, queer, Two-Spirit. So all of those thingsthe biggest label is predator or grooming children. It happened when I first came off of Canada's Drag Race and I started doing a lot of media interviews, there was even a community called like Alberta that tried to protest me from coming there assuming that I would be trying to push transgender ideals or encourage kids to get sex changes. The thing that these people make up in their minds is so telling to me of their understanding. Because when I think of myself and community and reading to a child or sitting with elders or performing in front of community, the last thing on my mind is sex. That is the furthest thing. And so to me, it is more dangerous for someone to have a mind that is able to sexualize an image of kids and queer people and women so readily. That is more threatening to a community than someone who is just there to support and listen. So I've learned that that again is a projection of their mind and how disturbing is that that their brain is so quickly able to go to that and anger and violence. That is more a threat to communities than I am putting on a wig and some makeup.HR: I get that on a daily, I get people commenting, telling me I'm an abomination, I'm ruining the children, and I'm like, Girl, I'm not doing anything, I'm just chilling.CL: We're just chillin'.SM: What are they reacting to on your social?HR: Just being myself, just yeah, existing and looking different and being different. I get a lot of people constantly telling me that I'm hideous, or they'll like make jokes about me being trans and like, Oh, you'll never be an actual woman, blah, blah, blah. And it's like, again, it just shows their understanding of what they think Two-Spirit is, which is like, they don't know anything. And so just being yourself and being present in the moment as a Two-Spirit person, people don't like that. They wanna harm you because they think that you being yourself is a harm.SM: I do want to get your guys' reactions to Trump's election, especially concerning the Two-Spirited community. In American politics, there were some signs of progress. When President Biden confirmed Deb Haaland as the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary. But now, like with many minority groups, there has been a backsliding. Donald Trump, as he seeks to purge the federal government of so-called woke initiatives, agencies have flagged hundreds of words to limit or avoid according to a compilation of government documents and some of these words include literally Indigenous community, Native American, tribal. How do you guys react when you learn that the American presidential administration is trying to remove those words about your community in 2025?CL: Two-Spirit identities have lived here on these lands way before any form of government was here, way before any political party was here, way before any form of colonization was here. So we're not going anywhere. So no matter how many words you strike from a book, we don't care because we've been erased before, we've been denied our existence before, but that has never stopped us from living. So I know it is fearful. I understand it feels like a threat to our being and our identity. But we are not defined by words in a book or a constitution or a government. We are defined by our community and our people. And so long as that exists, we will never stop living.SM: There must be a frustration, though, with the politicization of this, to conflate just being Two-Spirit or being BIPOC or being Indigenous with being woke. I mean, it just is nonsensical and must be so frustrating when you think this is my identity, this has nothing to do with, you know, these made up wedge issue words like woke.CL: In this sense of colonialism, identity for so long, if it wasn't a straight White man, it did not exist or wasn't important. So when you say it feels regressive, they're trying to get back to that point. That you just have to be White and a man to be in power. That is the whole point of it is to say Indigenous people never existed here, so therefore we can take the land. And so to conflate wokeness to us not existing here, that's the point. It's to remove our identities or to wittle it down to one word so it's easy to get rid of.SM: So to just kind of flip to another political question, but north of the border. Canada, as we know, has a horrific history as it relates to Indigenous people, a history with residential schooling that was filled with abuse, forced sterilization, and many manifestations of forced assimilation. There have been efforts at reconciliation and reparations in certain cases. I wanna know where you guys feel Canada is at right now in terms of the treatment of Indigenous communities.HR: The government really tries not to pay too much mind [to] Indigenous communities. Like they do the bare minimum. They'll go to the communities, they'll be like, I'm so sorry, give this heartfelt speech and cry and give little parts of land back. But it's like, What else are you really doing? Like, isn't there still dirty water in these communities that nothing's being done about?Subscribe for LGBTQ-focused, accountability journalism. SM: You said dirty water, right? And this is a massive social problem in Canada and in the United States. Explain what you mean by that and why this is a problem that persists in 2025.HR: In a lot of Indigenous communities they have a boil water advisory because the water that's coming through the taps are unsafe to drink, it's undrinkable water. In some communities you can't even use the water to shower because it's dirty water. And these communities have been speaking out for years about not having clean, fresh drinking water to drink from and so far, nothing has happened. We continue to have a boil water advisory in these communities and to the point where some people will come out of those communities and we're always asking, we're like, Is this water okay to drink? Because we're not used to having fresh clean water being able to come from the tap and being able to drink that.SM: Another question that I wanted to ask was the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, MMIW. I just finished watching the Gabby Petito documentary, the, white, cisgender woman where so many resources, so much money was put into finding her as, you know, a young blonde white woman. And of course, every case should get resources, right? But can you talk about the problem of MMIW in the community right now?HR: Sorry, I'm trying not to get emotional about it because I had a very personal experience with MMIW. So when I became homeless, I made friends with another girl who was kind of going through the same things as me. I remember she went missing and we put up all these missing posters and the families and the friends went out and searching. There wasn't a lot of cops that came out to help, until way later. I think after a month when she was missing, cops went out and they found her, like, across the city from where we lived, under a pile of snow. And they essentially just labeled it as an unsuspicious death and that was it. They closed it, swept under the rug, nobody talked about it anymore. And we were pissed. We were so angry that this person that we loved so dearly was just swept off to the side and that's when I really started learning more about MMIW and I learned that this happened to a lot of Indigenous women, girls, Two-spirit, and people in our communities where we go missing and then they find us and we just are just another person that was found and they don't realize that we were people that were loved, we were family members, we were partners, and it just hurts my soul again seeing all this over and over again, MMIW, and we just continue talking about it but it seems like nothing is done and it seems like nobody cares and wants to put in the work that we put in. We put in so much work to look for our own community members but when is it that we're going to have help from the outside of community members to help us?SM: When you found out that your friend's death was labeled unsuspicious, how does that make you feel when you're also so acutely aware of the large issue of MMIW in society?HR: They instantly labeled it as an addict who just died. But they didn't do any investigations. I remember we were waiting for any sort of autopsy report and nothing was done. They didn't do an autopsy report and then they just labeled unsuspicious or like just leave it alone. And it does make me mad. People think that we deserve that ending because of how our life has been going because we did this or because we did that. Because we're an addict, because we're homeless, which is completely unfair too. That's just building on more stereotypes and building on more hate and more fear.SM: In 2019, a UN spokesperson declared that the plight of MMIW in Canada has been declared a genocide. They said that a national inquiry found reasons to believe that Canada's past and present policies, omissions and actions amount to genocide under international law. Do you think that's warranted?CL: As far back as I could remember, being a young Indigenous person, four or five years old, anytime we showed up on any form of media and news outlet, it was always missing and murdered. And it was always justified because of addictions, because of sex work. Oh, they didn't deserve to have a life because they did these things. But they never asked what led to that. Residential schools, abuses, trauma, intergenerational trauma. They just said they deserve that ending. because of the way life went for them. So now all Canadians are programmed to numb their brain out because they've seen these stories. The mindset becomes, Canadians will never care to look for them, so they're the easiest target. And you will see this disgusting rhetoric in certain comment sections or Facebook threads about how we lack value in lives. That we don't deserve a life. And because you don't give us that respect or value of life, we're disposable to abuse and to trauma and, Oh, they'll never go looking for them.Uncloseted Media is a reader-supported publication. It is so many easy and free resources. It's so simple as watching one of Haley's videos or my videos. And that has been, I think, our biggest change in Indigenous narrative with social media. Honestly, no government was going to do it for us. No TV show was going to do it for us. So it was a matter of social media and speaking our truth that really changed the narrative over the last five years. TikTok was a huge change in our narrative as Indigenous people because we were the ones telling the story. There wasn't a non-Indigenous person recording and then changing the narrative. It was us recording, telling the story, and posting and explaining. So that was a huge shift in media and the creation that we have had. Second of all, showing up to community. So showing up to a pow wow or community gathering that are open to all peoples. Even if you read all the textbooks in history about Indigenous people, you didn't sit with them. So you don't even have the lived experience to understand and feel what it is. And I think that's the difference of why there is a lack of empathy or connection, or why settler peoples can so easily detach from realities, because they never put humanity behind the words or the statistics.SM: Tell me a little bit about what you love about being Two-Spirited.CL: Two-Spirit, as Haley explained earlier, challenges so many colonial views just by our existing. Just by sitting there in the room, all these colonial beliefs pop right up and you don't even have to say nothing. And that is powerful. Us working through all of that and the discomfort and the lack of knowledge and community brings them to a greater understanding and essentially bonds us. And so that's what we always do. And that's what I love is that it's still a historical identity that rings true today.SM: Canada's getting ready for an election, and I mentioned it before, Poilievre is the Conservative candidate, Mark Carney is the Liberal candidate. Is there one candidate, I know no politician has ever been fantastic toward Indigenous populations, but is there one that y'all see as the better fit?CL: Pierre Poilievre I don't believe, reflects Indigenous values. He has gone to Indigenous community gatherings. In his whole political career, he has never really mentioned anything positive about Indigenous people. More so the extraction of land and resources was his focus. So I don't think that aligns with Indigenous views and worldview at all, is that we like to protect the land and make sure it's sustained for future generations. And I believe his core belief is to extract as much money or pocket as much money for financial reasons, and even if that comes at the cost of land or Indigenous communities and reserves and resources. I believe Mark Carney is the better candidate for myself at this point, because at least in my head his resume is so well rounded with financial situations and currently going through a global financial issue and time right now, so I think he's probably the most equipped to deal with it.SM: What's a question you want to be asked that you guys don't get asked in these contexts that you think is important to speak on?CL: That is a great question that I never thought about because we're so used to getting the same questions. HR: I know, I'm so used to getting the same questions over and over again, I've never thought of that.CL: Oh, What is the most exciting development that you have witnessed from birth to now for Indigenous people or Two-Spirit people? What is the change that you love seeing?HR: I remember when I was growing up and it was so hard to find any sort of representation. And so just being able to see so many amazing Indigenous actors, voice actors, singers, and the Two-Spirit representation that we're having now, like, I don't want to toot my own horn either, but I felt so, like... Oh my gosh, this is happening as a Two-Spirit person. I got my first commercial for a Hyundai commercial. Like it's happening all the time. We have so many now and there's so much more in the works too. It's crazy. I love it.SM: You guys are both young influencers and have a really big impact in younger demos as Two-Spirited influencers. What kind of responsibility do you feel in that space?HR: For myself, I was put in a lot of dangerous, scary situations, and I wish I had community to be able to help me and to help guide me in those situations. So being an adult now, I find it's my duty to be able to create these spaces and to create these communities and to always continue help uplifting Indigenous Two-Spirit youth. I'm not necessarily like one that you should always follow, I make mistakes too, but I just hope that me being myself can really inspire other youth to be themselves as well.SM: I think there was one quote that I saw where you said that your drag is unapologetically Two-Spirit. And I just wanted you to kind of explain that out.CL: Well, the OG quote, I believe, was unapologetically Indigenous, but you could also say Two-Spirit. So, when I say unapologetically Indigenous, unapologetically Two-Spirit is that I don't care which room I walk into, whether that be Drag Race, into a media room, in front of a camera. I'm going to bring my community with me, even if I'm alone.I make my own spaces. It doesn't matter if I'm the only Two-Spirit person in the room. I'm still there. It's still on Indigenous land. It is my space. So I'm never gonna question that.SM: You're amazing. I'm so grateful for your time. Anything else that I didn't ask that you wanted to add that you think is important to say in this context?CL: A lot of my friends are so anxious about the state of the world and I said, You cannot control what other people have to say about you but you can live authentically and you can stand and sit with your community. That's the only thing you could really do right now and still fight and go to rallies. You can do these actionable things but I think a lot of people get paralyzed by their being threatened by government. And honestly I think there's always gonna be some group that tries to. But as a reminder, Sylvia Rivera, Marsha P. Johnson, what choice did they have when you're pushed to such an extreme away from society, but to fight to exist? And that's what I like to remind people that Pride was not always a celebration, it was a protest. And so to honor that spirit of those who came before you and remind yourself, you have to probably fight just as hard, if not harder, because there's going to come these conservative times. And so I'm actually really excited for Pride this year, because it's la reminder and like an F-U to the systems that we're still going to laugh and we're still going to celebrate and we're still going to love, regardless of any government-mandated oppression.SM: Thank you both so much for your time and insight. I really, really appreciate it.CL: Thank you for having us.HR: Thank you for having us!If objective, nonpartisan, rigorous, LGBTQ-focused journalism is important to you, please consider making a tax-deductible donation through our fiscal sponsor, Resource Impact, by clicking this button:Donate to Uncloseted Media
