The most epic trans love story is streaming right now and it's a literal godsend
To describe the plot of Kaos in simple terms is quite a challenge; its complex and multilayered with dozens of characters all intersecting in fascinating and complicated ways. A big part of the enjoyment of watching is seeing the way the series reveals these connections throughout the season, but at a high level its a modern reinterpretation of Greek myth.Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) has had a pretty good run as the top god of Olympus, but one day he wakes up to find a new wrinkle on his face which sends him into a spiral of existential dread and fear of mortality (relatable). As his paranoia increases that the prophecy of his end is approaching, he becomes increasingly erratic. It doesnt help that theres dissension among the divine ranks of his family, and on Earth. There is a shift coming, a shift toward, well, chaos and there are many many moving parts, and many players both knowingly and unknowingly involved. Like I said, its complicated. But its also genius. And so very, very unapologetically queer. The writing is brilliant, witty, surprising, and clever. The cast is, well, worthy of a tale of the gods, and visually it is visionary. My gods, if you arent watching it, youre missing out on some truly stellar storytelling and one of the most compelling and steamy trans love stories this year. One of the players in this complex web is Caeneus (Misia Butler), a trans man adrift in purgatory, with the weight of a painful betrayal on his back. His job in the afterlife is to guide the dead through a frame to their final reward, regenerating and coming back to life again, reincarnated. Its a profoundly lonely existence; that is until he meets Riddy (Aurora Perrineau), a recently deceased woman who also has an important role to play in the prophecy. She's found herself trapped in purgatory after her husband steals the coin from her lips meant to pay Charon (Ramon Tikaram) to help her cross the River Styx. Riddy and Caeneus share an instant connection and one that blossoms into romance. However, because this is a Greek tragedy, things are complicated by the fact that her husband, Orpheus (Killian Scott), is tearing apart the fabric of existence to make his way to her in the underworld. If elements of that story and the characters name are ringing bells, its because the shows creator, Charlie Covell (The End of the F***ing World), lifted and reinterpreted them from classic Greek myth. Take the story of Caneaus who in the classical literature, was born female but was later transformed by Poseidon into a male. Making him our earliest trans hero. The effect of his inclusion in Kaos is subtle and poignantly radical because it underscores that trans people have not only existed since the dawn of time and storytelling, but that they are heroic, essential beings who are woven into the very fabric of humanity and fate. They are not a fad, not a modern anomaly, Kaos says, transness is core, it is essential, it is humanity.None of this is lost on Butler, who admits this is why hes always seen himself in and been drawn to the Greek classics and their innate queerness. Its always been something that I have been obsessed with for as long as I can remember, he tells PRIDE. Even in the very simple translations and iterations that you get as a child, you get a sense of this very queer perspective of the world that they have created through the myths. I think Charlie called the show Kaos because of reading in Ovids Metamorphoses a line about the world being begat out of chaos. The metamorphoses in themselves are all about change and the different ways in which we change and flow between different states. That at its core is a very queer concept. That comes through all throughout the series, where not only do queer characters and actors abound in this world, but Kaos infuses implicitly queer culture into its world-building, whether its making the Valkyries a gang of dykes on bikes, or populating the world with gay and pansexual romances were here and were queer. Its not just Caeneus story thats so woven into the fabric, but also all of The Fates (Suzy Eddie Izzard, Ch, and Sam Buttery). They are even more arcane and more woven into the very fabric of reality and being. Theyre all trans as well, Butler points out.Not only does this make for a more rich, compelling world, but it also means the show is able to do something all too rare: It doesnt hang all its trans representation on one character, dooming them to fail at giving audiences a broader view of the community. It also lifts some of the oppressive weight of that responsibility off the back of one actor. I was only part of a wider whole, and I didnt have that impetus or pressure to represent anything too holistically, because I could only ever represent a part of it, says Butler.Instead, Butler was free to play a far more rich and complex character for whom transness is only one part of his being. Its a role that the actor says is reflective of his own story. Im not someone who tends to go stealth a lot, I cant really anymore. Im pretty much open to the world, says Butler. Im very proud of being trans, and I think that theres a lot of power that I have found in it. Its been really tough at times, but its also been incredibly empowering, and I think that thats what we see with Caeneus is that his transness isnt ignored. Its not just dangled and tokenized. Its really integrated into who he is as a person. But it also doesnt take center stage. Its his love story with Riddy, his navigation of his mum and her betrayal and his death and just being in Purgatory and his dog, we have all these threads that we get to explore. As an actor, it was such a privilege to see it done with a trans role.Hes so very right: Its thrilling and moving to see a character like Caeneus being brought to life by an actor like Butler, because along with the simple pleasures of watching a good yarn unwind you can see the future of trans storytelling being written with every scene, every plot point, every trope-and-trap-defying moment. Falling in love with the character of Caeneus is not just possible, its inevitable, because Butler succeeds in infusing him with an aching pathos and a dreamy sad boy allure. Hes sweet, pure, and his attractiveness is gravitational. All of which is to say its not a stretch to believe that Riddy would not only be drawn to him but feel an instant cosmic connection, even in purgatory. Butler credits that crackling chemistry to a surprising demand from the director that he and Perrineau avoid one another until it was time to film their scene. When we shot that first scene on my first day on the bench where were kind of properly getting to know each other. That is very early days, [for] Misia and Aurora getting to know each other, too, Butler reveals. I hope that that translates as kind of that bubbly first chemistry because it really felt so exciting and special to be acting alongside someone as talented and beautiful and lovely as her.The ploy worked, and what comes across on screen are exactly those early moments of attraction, insecurity, magnetism, and eventually connection. Its sweet and its sexy and it feels excitingly like a paradigm shift in the way we see trans masc men presented on screen. Its really very revolutionary to see a transmasculine person be seen in this way and to have a sexual relationship with someone as well, agrees Butler.Sometimes trans masculine characters can be kind of desexualized, and I have felt really empowered by it. I really would love to do a rom-com. Im so obsessed with rom-coms and with romance movies, Ive always been a hopeless romantic. So to have the opportunity to play someone who is, yeah, deeply in love with someone in a way that I really resonated with, with Caeneus and the way that he falls in love, it felt really familiar. That probably also helps with the verisimilitude. After all, a major element of the series requires that you believe that two men would be willing to destroy the fabric of the universe for the love of one woman which makes Perrineau so perfect for the role. For Aurora Perrineau, we would! laughs Butler. That said, the question were left with is: Where do we go from here? The first season ends with a question of what happens next. While Butler cant reveal where Caeneus story will go next, one thing we both agree on is that were hopeful and praying to all the gods we get to find out.If you havent started streaming Kaos, theres no better time than right now. This show is doing the thing we crave: offering complex, exciting, boundary-breaking queer and trans characters, being heroic, villainous, knowing, and clueless. Its utterly, thrillingly, human even when they just so happen to be gods.

Ted Cruz rages at judicial nominee over past support for LGBTQ+ rights
Republican senators used transphobic language during a Senate hearing Wednesday while questioning a New York state judge and former congressman, Judge Anthony Brindisi, who has been nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York.At his confirmation hearing, Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) obsessed with Brindisis past support of the Equality Act, using transphobic language to question him, and used tired Republican talking points to accuse him of supporting men in womens restrooms. Related Trans candidate Vivian Smotherman was attacked by Libs of TikTok. Shes fighting back by winning. Smotherman exuded confidence talked to LGBTQ Nation about her campaign, racist charter schools, and studying trans history. The Equality Act, which Brindisi co-sponsored when he was in Congress, is a bill that would add sexual orientation and gender identity to federal civil rights legislation. Subscribe to our Newsletter today During the Judiciary hearing, Graham made false claims, including that the Equality Act would endanger women by allowing biological males to use womens bathrooms. I thought it to be an unacceptable outcome to share locker rooms and bathrooms based on gender identity, Graham said, pressing Brindisi on whether he still backed the bills provisions. Why did you sponsor and vote for legislation that would mandate that women be victimized? Cruz further asked the nominee. Cruz called the Equality Acts name Orwellian. In the exchange, Cruz repeatedly interrupted Brindisi. Why did you believe women and girls dont have a right to be free from harassment, to be free from biological men disrobing in front of them?In response, Brindisi said that the bill merely prevented discrimination based on gender identity, adding that he believed all people have the right to feel safe. Cruz also brought up the recent failed confirmation of nominee Sarah Netburn, who, as a magistrate judge, recommended that an incarcerated trans woman be moved to a womens prison from a mens prison. Cruz was irate about the decision, Do you think the women in womens prisons have any rights? Do they have any right not to be incarcerated, particularly the right not to be incarcerated with a 62 serial rapist?Carl Tobias, chair of the University of Richmond School of Law, called Cruzs line of questioning outrageous and noted, Its hard to see [Republicans] as champions of women inmates. Thats ludicrous. All of the nominees, even Brindisi, are well-qualified, mainstream nominees, he told Courthouse News in an interview. The gratuitous comments from Cruz are just off the mark. He noted that Republican lawmakers decided that attacking LGBTQ+ rights is good politics. Its always easy to do something that is negative vis a vis a minority, especially transgender people, he said. And despite the grilling he received from the Judiciary Committees GOP contingent, Tobias predicted that Brindisi would likely advance through the panel on a party-line vote and that he would have enough votes to be confirmed by the full Senate.Democrats have been on a fast track in recent months, pushing to surpass the 234 judicial confirmations made during the Trump administration, including a plethora of LGBTQ+ nominees. Wednesdays hearing featured the final group of Biden administration nominees set to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Were experiencing a renaissance of queer Hispanics in film and it could save lives
Two Mexican boys fell in love last year on the big screen in the film Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. Though it only grossed $407,838 at the box office, it still represented a historic achievement as possibly the first-ever U.S. film to show two Hispanic boys in love. After years without much onscreen representation, LGBTQ+ Hispanic actors and characters have begun appearing more frequently on the silver screen. The shift towards this trend has been gradual, and it remains as fragile as it is important; especially as right-wing politics continues to reduce Hispanics to either a biased voting bloc or as immigrants threatening to destroy the nation. Related 45 years ago, Cheech & Chong released a massively popular pro-queer punk rock song The stoner comedians performance of Earache My Eye was surprisingly progressive in an era of bad gay media representation. A quick look reveals a number of notable queer Hispanic and Latine film roles over the last decade: Hispanic actress Kitana Kiki Rodriguez played the vindictive sex worker anti-hero in the 2015 dramedy Tangerine; a bisexual Dominican love interest named Kevin romanced the Black gay lead in the 2016 Academy Award-winning coming-of-age film Moonlight; transgender Latinx actress Zoey Luna played a young witch in 2021 supernatural thriller The Craft: Legacy; part-Hispanic actor Taylor Zakhar Perez played the presidents charming son Alex Claremont-Diaz in the 2023 rom-com Red, White & Royal Blue; and Argentine actor Juan Pablo Di Pace played a lead in the 2024 drama The Mattachine Family. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today This seeming increase in queer Hispanic and Latine characters has been a long time coming. Even though the Hispanics and Latine people have grown from 12.5% to 19% of the U.S. population from 2000 to 2022, only 5.5% of speaking characters in mainstream films during the same period were Hispanic or Latine, according to a 2023 study by the University of California (USC).McKinsey & Company An infographic showing the diverse characteristics of the U.S. Latino community. During most of that time, Hispanic and Latine film roles remained heavily stereotyped and mostly invisible. Early 20th-century films depicted Hispanics and Latine people as unprincipled fathers, saintly mothers, and rebellious greaser sons. Late 20th-century films began depicting them as farm laborers, distressed immigrants, drug-dealing gang members, maids with broken English, temperamental or over-sexualized lovers or in non-speaking, background roles. These roles also suffered from colorism, with dark-skinned Hispanics and Latine actors playing villains and lighter-skinned ones playing heroes or victims. And these biased depictions also revealed a deeper Hollywood bias. While two Hispanic actors won Oscars in the 1950s, another didnt win until Benicio del Toros 2000 Best Supporting Actor win as a Mexican police officer in the crime drama Traffic. No Hispanic or Latine actor has won an acting Oscar since.Thankfully, the queer Hispanic and Latine characters in modern films differ drastically from their 20th-century counterparts in one major way: Theyre not background and supporting characters theyre fully fleshed-out main characters with self-determination and complicated emotions. Magnolia Pictures Sin-Dee Rella drags her boyfriends mistress across Los Angeles by the hair in the 2015 dramedy Tangerine. And while theyre more heroic than in the past, theyre also imperfect: Alex in Red, White and Royal Blue royally screws up a diplomatic visit withaBritish prince, risking his moms presidential re-election in the process. The transgender Latinx witch in The Craft: Legacy recklessly uses magic for selfish reasons, endangering herself and her friends. Sin-Dee, the trans sex worker protagonist in Tangerine, literally drags her no-good boyfriends drug-addled mistress across town by her hair as a sign of her power and seriously misplaced priorities. Even the teen Mexican-American couple in Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe feel conflicted about their racial and sexual identities. The number of queer Hispanic and Latine characters on the big screen have increased over the last decade. In 2013, only one of the 31 LGBTQ+ characters who appeared in mainstream movies was Hispanic or Latine, according to a GLAAD study. By 2023, 17 of the 292 LGBTQ+ characters in mainstream and direct-to-streaming movies were Hispanic or Latine, GLAAD reported. But despite this 1,600% increase, the overall percentage of queer Hispanic and Latine characters in film compared to the overall number of LGBTQ+ characters in film has remained somewhat stagnant. In 2013, queer Hispanic and Latine roles made up 6% of all queer movie characters in 2023, they still made up just 6%.This stagnation has arguably contributed to a lack of understanding or even negative public perceptions of Hispanics and Latine people, possibly to lethal consequences.Omar Ornelas / El Paso Times / USA TODAY NETWORK via IMAGN Volunteers with the Border Network of Human Rights carry crosses with the names of the victims of the Aug. 3 El Paso Walmart shooting at a memorial on the massacres fifth anniversary. On August 3, 2019, a 21-year-old white supremacist gunman intentionally targeted Hispanics and Latinos in a Walmart in the border city of El Paso, Texas. He killed 23 people most were Mexican. An investigation revealed that he believed in the Great Replacement Theory, a racist and increasingly Republican conspiracy theory that Hispanics and other non-white immigrants are trying to replace white Americans and destroy the countrys capitalist and Christian values. Many noted that then-President Trump made vilifying Hispanic and Latine immigrants a regular trademark of his presidency. On the shootings first anniversary, U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX).wrote an essay in Varietythat stated, There is a dangerous nexus between the racist political rhetoric and the negative images of Latinos as criminals and invaders that Americans see on their screens. About a year later, Castro organized a September 2021 House Judiciary Committee hearing about the lack of diversity in media. In his testimony, award-winning Hispanic actor Edward James Olmos said that film has a uniquely influence over viewers minds. Were talking about the single most important art form that humans have ever created, Olmos said. Nothing attacks the subconscious mind more. You sit down before a theater screen, a dark room, with no peripheral vision. Everything goes into the subconscious, and it stays there. In her article about queer Latine representation in film, film critic Nadia Awad wrote, We know lack of representation can nurture a context for dehumanization, violence, and policies that hurt communities for generations. Representation is the first step towards becoming part of a story, and our stories tell us who we are. When collections of stories accumulate over a long period of time, certain themes and ideas start to be thought of as natural or common sense. The lack of representation persists behind the camera as well, with few Hispanic or Latino directors, producers, and studio executives, and few casting directors and film festivals soliciting work from Hispanics. Movies centered on Hispanics and Latine characters received substantially smaller production budgets; roughly $10 million compared to $25 million for movies centered on non-Hispanic/Latine characters, according to a study by the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.Similarly, films with Hispanic and Latine leads receive fewer marketing dollars and are shown in fewer theaters than films with non-Hispanic/Latino leads, the study added. Online critics also tend to rate Hispanic- and Latine-led films much lower than films with non-Hispanic/Latino leads. This all perpetuates a cycle of exclusion, creating fewer Hispanic/Latine roles in a shrinking number of Hispanic/Latine-themed films, and also fewer opportunities for Hispanic and Latine creatives looking to tell culturally authentic stories.McKinsey & Company A chart showing the different genres of Latino-led films pursued by non-Latino and Latino directors. When Aurora Guerrero, a queerChicana filmmaker, wanted to explore a same-sex crush between two Latina teenagers in her 2012 film Mosquita y Mari, her team had to crowdfund the films $80,000 production budget just to get it made. Though the film achieved critical success, she still struggled to find work for three years after its release. So many women of color, so many Latina women get passed over for an opportunity to direct, Guerrero said. So there are these barriers that are very difficult to get past when people dont take the time to really see you, to really consider you and let you compete with your talent.By refusing to tell our stories and by refusing to put us in charge of telling them, Hollywood power brokers are complicit in our exclusion, 270 Latino creators wrote in an October 2020 open letter to the film industry. The letter called for Hollywood tocreate more Latine-fronted projects for, by, and about the Latine community and also the hiring of Latine creators for non-Latine projects. But as the overall number of queer Hispanic and Latine film characters has risen over the last decade, so too has another trend: Hispanic and Latine directors are mining the rich vein of cultural history to create documentaries and biopics that reintroduce lesser-known queer Hispanic history-makers to a new generation. In 2016, queer Hispanic producer Joe Castel released Nelly Queen: The Life and Times of Jose Sarria, a film about the Spanish-Colombian drag queen who was the first openly gay candidate to run for public office in North America. In 2017, Daresha Kyi a longtime producer of English and Spanish films released Chavela, a biopic of lesbian Hispanic singing legend Chavela Vargas. In 2020, the documentary Mucho, Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado shared the explots of the flamboyant Mexican TV psychic. In 2023, Cassandro presented a biopic of Sal Armendriz, a real-life gayextico(drag) lucha libre wrestler who was known for wearing makeup and animal prints in the ring and for drawing power from the homophobic opposition he faced in the traditionally macho sport. The 2024 documentary Frida told the story of disabled painter Frida Kahlo through her own surrealist self-portraits, diaries, letters, essays, and interviews. These films are helping contemporary film viewers reconnect and find power in the past, popularizing iconic Hispanic and Latine queer figures and expanding the public imagination of queer Hispanic and Latine peoples contributions to American and world culture.Hispanic film criticYolanda Machadoconsidered the lasting legacy of such films, writing, Representation on-screen, doesnt just further our storiesit helps bridge the gap between younger and older generations who were raised in a very close minded and non-accepting way.The bridges will matter all the more as younger Hispanics and Latine people increasingly identify as LGBTQ+, and as Hispanics and Latine people gradually become 25% of the U.S. population, a demographic shift expected to occur by 2060.(Additional research for this article was provided by Daniel Villarreal.)Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

You all want JD Vance to get grilled at the vice presidential debate
Last week, LGBTQ Nation asked its readers what they want Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) to be asked at the vice presidential debate next week on October 1, an event that will be hosted by CBS News. Throughout the week, thousands of readers voted, and two options ended up in a near tie: if Vance stands by his comments that its good to create stories as he claims Haitian immigrants are eating dogs and spreading HIV, and how Vance went from having a close trans friend in law school to demonizing trans people as a Republican politician. These options ended up with around 30% of votes in the poll. They were followed by a question to Walz about how so many states are suing the Biden administration over the Department of Educations Title IX guidance protecting trans students and what a Harris-Walz administration would do about that, which 22% of readers picked. The question for both candidates about how their respective administrations would fight the criminalization of LGBTQ+ identities in other countries ended up last, with 18% of readers voting for it. So a majority of you all picked an option involving Vance getting grilled. LGBTQ Nationwill have another poll next week atour Equality For All 2024 election news center. In the meantime, make sure youre registered to vote. Your Vote is a step toward Equality for All Make sure youre ready to vote!

Will Ferrell EXPERTLY calls out the absurdity of transphobia in new interview & we're SOBBING
"Why does transphobia exist?" is a large question with many even larger and more multifaceted answers. One such answer was recently supplied by comedian and actor Will Ferrell in a new interview withThe Independent."Whether or not you can ultimately wrap your head around that, why would you care if somebodys happy? Why is that threatening to you? If the trans community is a threat to you, I think it stems from not being confident or safe with yourself. Period! The interview was with Ferrell and Harper Steele, his former Saturday Night Live collaborator and close friend of 30 years. Steele came out as trans in 2022, after which she and Ferrell decided to take a cross country road trip together. The pair were accompanied by filmmaker Josh Greenbaum, who turned the journey into the new documentary film Will & Harper. After a sensational debut at Sundance earlier this year, the film was picked up by Netflix, where it is now available to stream starting today. So a question like, "Why does transphobia exist?" is one that Ferrell has been contemplating a lot as of late. He responded, "I think we fear what we do not know."It's an excellent response. It brings to mind Harvey Milk's Gay Freedom Day speech from 1978, delivered less than a year before his assassination. In the speech, Milk called on the LGBTQ+ community to, "Come out to your neighbors, to your coworkers, to the people who work where you eat and shop. Come out only to the people you know, and who know you. Not to anyone else. But once and for all, break down the myths, destroy the lies and distortions."See on InstagramNow, Ferrell calls on his fellow cis men to do the work to connect with and defend the trans community. Ferrell recalled that when Steele came out to him and some other close friends via email in 2022, an email that started with a truly iconic subject line, "Here's a Weird One." Ferrell said, "All of us were extremely supportive and expressed love, but that sort of opened the questions like, 'How can we help you? What do you need us to do?'"Steele responded, "I just ask you as my friend to stand up for me. Do your best to, if Im misgendered, just speak up on my behalf, thats all I ask. That's exactly what Ferrell has done. During their trip, Ferrell saw just how much things have changed day to day for Steele and trans women like her. "The hatred is out there," he said. Still, his love and support of Steele only grows. Its very real and its very unsafe for trans people in certain situations. But I dont know why trans people are meant to be threatening to me as a cis male. I dont know why Harper is threatening to me.See on InstagramHis joy for Steele is overwhelming. He said regarding the transphobia Steele has faced, "Its so strange to me, because Harper is finally her. Shes finally who she was always meant to be."Ferrell is such an excellent person to be making these arguments because they come with no pretense or condescension. He's spoken very openly about how before Steele came out, having said in an interview at Sundance that he had "zero experience with the trans community." He continued, "I had met trans people, but I didnt have anyone personally in my life, so this was all new territory for me, which is why I think this film is so exciting for us to kind of put out there in the world. Its a chance all of us in the cis community to be able to ask questions and also just to listen and be there as a friend to discuss this journey. Will & Harper is streaming now on Netflix. 10 things you should know about poppers
10 things you should know about poppersA number of us take them casually. Some of us are even addicted to them. A few of us dont have sex unless were using them. Poppers.A staple in the gay community, and something a number of us use to get a little head rush during sex and loosen our rear. So what are poppers, really? What is this weird smelling liquid we love to inhale? Here are 10 things you should definitely know about poppers.2. Poppers work by relaxing the smooth muscles in your bodyThis includes the sphincter muscles in your anus, which is why you loosen up right after inhalation.Smooth muscles surround the bodys blood vessels, so when they relax, it causes blood vessels to dilate, which results in the increase of heart rate and blood flow throughout the body. This is what leads to the feeling of euphoria you get after using them, according to The Good Drugs Guide.1. Poppers is slang for a chemical class called alkyl nitrites Sothe word poppers is actually just slang for alkyl nitrites. Good to know, because we shouldprobablyknow what were putting into our bodies, right?3. Poppers became big during the gay disco of the 70sIn the '70s and '80s, gay men would sniff poppers at gay clubs to enhance the music and get high. In the '90s, poppers were used in the growing gay rave scene. Now, however, poppers have become more popularized, and some straight people use poppers recreationally (not for sex) at clubs too.4. Taking poppers and Viagra is very dangerousBoth Viagra and poppers cause a persons blood pressure to drop. The combination can result in fainting, stroke, or a heart attack/death, according to LGBT Foundation.5. Dont ingest themSoundsobvious, right? But some people have ingested poppers, usually accidentally, and that can cause death, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.6. Only 3 percent of the population use poppers Compare that to the 10 percent of American adults who report smoking marijuana in the past year. As far as drugs go,popper use isnt that popular, even though its legal. But the 3 percent makes sense, because gay men predominantly use poppers and that percentage roughly reflects the number of gay men in the population.7. The UK almost banned poppersRememberwhen that happened back in early Spring of this year? Apparently, the only reason it didnt pass was because of a technicality, according to The Guardian.8. Canada banned poppersIn 2013, Canada cracked down on the distribution of poppers, warning that sales of poppers could lead to a three-year jail sentence or a $5,000 fine, according to DailyXtra.com.9. Negative side effectsLike any drug, there are some negative side effects from taking poppers. The main short term ones are light headedness/headache and occasional dizziness or fainting. Long term side effects include eye damage or loss of eyesight Poppers Maculopathy and extremely high doses can potentially lead to the fatal methaemoglobinaemia where blood is unable to carry oxygen to cells in the body. (Its like what happens with Carbon Monoxide poisoning), LGBT Foundation reports.10. You technically need a prescription for amyl nitriteAmyl Nitrite was originally a prescription drug in 1937 and remained until 1960, but in 1960, the FDA removed the prescription due to the fact that its relatively safe. In 1969, however, it was reinstated as a prescription drug. You can buy substances that obtain alkyl nitrites other than amyl nitrite at most sex shops that sell recreational drug paraphernalia. They may be purchased legally, and are advertised as nail polish remover (or something else along those lines).

This brave teen is traveling 450 miles regularly to get gender-affirming healthcare
Like over half of the states in the U.S., Iowa has passed anti-trans laws directed at minors. Thanks to the rights anti-trans rhetoric, anti-trans laws have skyrocketed in the past couple of years. These laws have devastating consequences for the upwards of 11,000 trans teenagers who live in those states. Veronica is one of those trans teenagers. In a story reported by NPR, Veronica shared the 450-mile journey she takes every few months to get from Iowa, her home state, to Minnesota, which allows gender-affirming healthcare. Related Amazing mother explains exactly why she isnt afraid of drag queen story hours in viral video Im not afraid of Drag Queen Story Hour.. What is scary is every single day when I drop my kids off at school, will I see them come home? When Iowas ban on gender-affirming care for minors took effect in March 2023, Veronica was in the midst of treatment and only had a few months to find an out-of-state option or stop her treatment. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Veronicas mom, Emily, shared, You never think, as a mom, I cant wait for my kid to grow up and leave the state, but thats where Im at right now.Emily said that she knew Veronica was trans before she came out, she realized when she saw a trans woman speak at class she was taking in 2017. It was like I was hit by a bolt of lightning. I was like, This is my child. I know this in my soul, in my heart. [After that] I was kind of just waiting to hear I wasnt pushing it, but I just knew.Veronica has faced cruel comments from classmates and neighbors, and her mom has had to fight to change her name in the high schools system. Theres no good option for which bathroom to use at school. Emily says neighbors and classmates have made cruel comments. Speaking to her daughter, Emily said, I cant wait for you to find your people, your support, your health care providers everything you need. I want that for you, even if its far away. For most families, moving away wasnt an option. Veronica has three young siblings, and her father and grandparents all live in Iowa. So she and her mom decided that every couple of months they would have to travel 450 miles so Veronica could continue getting treatment. When Iowas ban took effect, Veronica was taking puberty blockers. She had come out as trans to her friends three years ago and her parents and siblings two years ago. If she were to stop taking the puberty blockers, male puberty would have restarted, meaning some bodily changes such as voice deepening, the growth of her Adams apple, facial hair, shoulder-broadening, and more would have taken effect and permanently changed her body in a way that would have exacerbated her gender dysphoria. She still gets puberty-blocking shots, which is what she travels to Minnesota for every couple of months. In December of last year, her new doctor started her on hormone therapy, taking daily pills of estradiol, a type of estrogen, while she continued getting puberty blocker shots to keep her testosterone levels down. The family also has to get her estrogen pills at a clinic in Minnesota, as refills are banned in Iowa. While Veronica said, I feel like its helped me feel a lot better about my body, her mom has other reasons for why shes glad her daughter can continue treatment: if she looks like a cisgender woman shes less likely to be the target of violence or discrimination for being a trans person.Veronicas doctor in Minnesota agrees her mental health seems to have improved since he began seeing her. Shes doing well in an ideal world, I would see her more often, but it is a burden [for her] to get here, he said.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Top or bottom: What your astrological sign reveals about your sex life
What do the stars say about your role in the bedroom? These days, it seems like everyone judges everyone based on their Zodiac signs. Scorpios avoid Libras because they drive them crazy. Aries are supposedly toxic for Pisces because they dont like to be told what to do. Everybody hates on the Geminis, and as a Gemini myself, I call favoritism.Regardless of your role in the bedroom, heres what your astrological star sign says about your love life. Feel free to check your Sun, Moon, and Rising, or run a natal report if youre not sure what those are or how to find them.As always, take whatever resonates, and leave the rest behind.AriesFor you, sex and play are one and the same. Theres an eager, fired-up quality to your fucking: No matter how many times youve performed a specific act or fooled around with a certain Grindr fling, you climb into bed like its the very first time. Your pleasure always comes first, but you relish the high of returning the favor.Sex position: Total top or power bottom. Either way, you call the shots.TaurusAn extravagant dinner full of aphrodisiacs and a deliberately drawn-out tease are your pleasure-centric choices for how you approach dating and hooking up. Youre slow and methodical in the bedroom, but your lovers know thats a pro, not a con. Sex is meant to be a multi-sensory experience, henny!Sex position: Two wordsservice top.GeminiArousal is as much a mental experience as it is physical, and no one understands that better than your Mercury-ruled sign. You love the chasecrafting the perfectly worded Lex ad, pursuing a hottie who catches your eye at the gay barand when your mind and body are fully engaged, youre as eager to please as you are to receive.Sex position: Top-leaning versbut with the right partner, youll try just about anything.CancerYoure known on the streets for your sweet, reserved demeanor (thank your ruling planet, the Moon), but between the sheets, you crave intensity. For you, sex is an all-consuming thrilland ultimate expression of vulnerability. Thats not to say you cant do casual. You can, so long as you and your hookup are both willing to let your guard down.Sex position: Bottom, possibly submissive or into kink.LeoYour hottest hookups transport you beyond the confines of your body or circumstance. Naturally creative, you pride yourself in your willingness to experiment in bed. Youre no stranger to a stoned makeout sesh or poppers-aided fuck, and you delight in knowing that no two sexual encounters will ever be exactly the same. (How boring would that be?)Sex position: Vers.VirgoCategory isstrategy. Goal-oriented inside and outside of the bedroom, you approach fucking with the meticulousness and determination of a true tactician. You hit that sweet spot every time, and your stamina is sure to nab you tens across the board, not that anyones keeping score.Sex position: Top or top-leaning vers.LibraTheres something inherently unconventional about your sex life (beyond your queerness, that is). Whether you lean more kinky than vanilla or simply attract people who are your total opposites, you appreciate how physical desire can be simultaneously connective and transgressive. Youre more likely than most to seek community based on your sexual intereststhink play parties or online groups.Sex position: Vers, possibly into kink.ScorpioStereotyped as the sex lovers of the zodiac, Scorpio placements tend to be pretty libindinous (in medical astrology, this Mars-ruled sign does govern over the genitals, after all). But for you, physical desire goes much deeper than surface-level attraction. To truly escape into sensual pleasure, you need some level of emotional connection with a partneror at the very least, a shared sexual fantasy.Sex position: Top-leaning vers. Youre selective about who you let in, pun intended.SagittariusIf love is a battlefield, youre in it to win, and you usually do. Unafraid to lean into your most carnal desires, you have no problem asking for what you want in bed and encourage your lovers to do the same. Patience isnt your strong suit in any area of life, including sex, but what you lack in stamina, you easily make up for in passion. Sex position: Top.CapricornYou give good 9 to 5 in your public life, but beneath your boss-bitch, no-bullshit exterior is the heart of a true romantic. Youre an indulgent, highly tactile lover in even the most casual of hookups, and if you catch feelings (*gasp*), you shamelessly spoil your partner. Work hard, play hard!Sex position: Bottom-leaning vers.AquariusNaturally curious, youre one to get to know a potential hookup before getting them off. You love a little intellectual sparring and basically consider witty banter a form of foreplay. Your ideal partner? Someone who isnt afraid to laugh with you in bedafter youve ravaged each other to the point of speechlessness, of course. Sex position: True vers.PiscesFor you, sex is best when youre truly comfortable. Whether you deck your bed out in bougie linens, always offer to host hookups, or tend to fall into bed with friends, you need some level of emotional or material security in order to fully let loose.Sex position: Bottom.

Texas AG sues Biden administration so he can discriminate against trans kids
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton recently announced that he is suing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, and various members of the Biden-Harris Administration for implementing new rules requiring foster care agencies to consider whether prospective families will affirm a childs LGBTQ+ identity when deciding child placement. The rule, Designated Placement Requirements Under Titles IV-E and IV-B for LGBTQI+ Children, was revealed on April 30 and went into effect on July 1. It specifies that all foster care placements must be safe and appropriate for all childrenincluding LGBTQI+ children, meaning that LGBTQ+ children cannot be harassed or discriminated against by being placed in housing that doesnt affirm their identities. Additionally, children under this rule dubbed the final rule are protected from being forcibly outed to prospective parents or staff at foster care agencies. Related Anti-trans laws cause increase in suicide attempts according to massive new study Trans youth in states that enacted anti-trans laws had up to a 72% increase in suicide attempts. The final rule stipulates that foster care agencies have until October 1, 2026 to implement its provisions. Agencies that dont will risk losing funding under Title IV-E and Title IV-B, both of which are legal provisions regulating funding for foster care facilities. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Paxton alleges that the final rule would harm Texas by limiting the sovereignty of states. He also claims it threatens substantial economic injury to Texas because of the additional costs for compliance. His case doesnt explain how this specific rule is different from any other proposed rule from federal agencies regulating foster care and other state services.Paxton alleges that the final rule violates Texas state law, owing to Texas bans on gender-affirming care and restrictions on allowing trans youth to access sex-segregated spaces that align with their gender identity. His lawsuit makes comparatively scarce mention of how these laws relate specifically to sexual orientation or ones intersex status.Paxton made several legal arguments to oppose the final rule, including that it is entirely arbitrary, overextends federal authority, and violates the Spending Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which says Congress must legislate how the government spends taxpayer funds.Paxtons lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction on the rule, and for damages to be awarded to the plaintiffs. The Biden Administration is attempting to hold the Texas foster care system hostage to force unscientific, fringe beliefs about gender upon the entire country, Paxton said in a statement. The new rule directly violates federal law and threatens to undermine our vital foster care programs, putting children who need safe, loving homes at risk.Support for transgender individuals is backed by almost every single leading medical organization in the United States, including the American Psychological Association, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Endocrine Society. The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), the leading regulatory body on transgender care, recommends affirming trans children in the latest edition of their Standards of Care. WPATH details how failing to affirm trans children can result in immense harm, worsening mental health and increasing the potential of suicide attempts.A recent study published in Nature Human Behavior reveals that anti-trans laws across the U.S. directly cause transgender youth to attempt suicide. Angry mob throws knife at LGBTQ+ students in high school parade
Police in Marion, Iowa are investigating an assault on queer students marching in their high schools homecoming parade this week.According to witnesses, a group of about 10 students shouted slurs at the LGBTQ+ kids as they marched behind a banner for Linn-Marr Spectrum, the high schools gay-straight alliance (GSA). The group began throwing objects at the GSA marchers, including an open box cutter. Related Book bans have increased nearly 200%. Florida and Iowa are partly to blame However, a quieter form of soft book bans also threatens free speech and LGBTQ+ representation in schools. The kids marched on despite the assault. This behavior is unacceptable and does not reflect the values of our district. We are dedicated to ensuring that all students feel safe, respected, and valued, and will not condone actions that threaten them, they added. The mother of one of the GSA students said she was proud of her daughters decision to keep marching but feared for her safety.I cannot fathom being a child going to homecoming and not feeling safe, Jennifer Pitkin told KCRG-9 News.Theres a lot of other kids affected that dont speak up, and this is their norm, she said. While the thrown box cutter didnt injure anyone, Pitkin had a message for the perpetrators.I want you to stay home, I want you to never go to a Pride parade again my kid and these kids would not be held down, she said. I promise you, they would not be held down.Police had no information about the progress of their investigation.Linn-Mar Spectrum was recently named GSA of the Year by Iowa Safe Schools at their Spirit Awards in Des Moines. Anti-LGBTQ+ hostility runs high among the far-right in Iowa. There, a federal court recently upheld an LGBTQ+ book ban for public schools in the state. Trump advisor says Donald Trump will allow state to hunt down abortion-seekers
Jason Miller, senior advisor to former President Donald Trump, said that if Trump wins again, Its going to be up to the states whether or not they set up regimes to monitor womens pregnancies so they can prosecute them for getting out-of-state abortions. In other words, Trump will support Republican attorneys general and other law enforcement officials hunting down people who cross state lines to receive abortions for any reason. Gay student assaulted in notoriously anti-LGBTQ+ school district
A climate of fear and reprisal created by anti-LGBTQ+ parental rights campaigns in school districts across the country has resulted in the assault of a gay teenager in Chino Hills, California.A senior at Ruben S. Ayala High Schoolin Riverside County sustained injuries when a fellow student flipped the table the gay 17-year-old was manning for the schools Gender and Sexuality Alliance group. The victim was thrown backward and landed on his back on a concrete planter. He was transported to urgent care, where doctors diagnosed him with a back injury. Related School board meeting descends into chaos as people debate outing trans kids to their parents Some of the 300 attendees chanted Kick him out during the contentious four-hour meeting after a state official supported trans kids. The incident was caught on tape by a school security camera. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The whole thing happened so fast, the student told The Advocate. One moment, I was packing up and the next I was on the ground. My back hit the planter hard, and I couldnt believe someone would actually do that. The victim, who was not identified by name to protect his privacy, says he and his fellow GSA officers were verbally abused repeatedly before the attack. His mother said school administrators suspended the assailant, but thats as much as theyve told the family. They wont tell us what really happened to him, the students mom said. The San Bernardino County Sheriffs Department is investigating the assault.I can confirm deputies in Chino Hills are investigating an incident at the school involving a student who was reportedly assaulted by another student, Gloria Huerta, a public information officer with the department, said in a statement. The investigation is ongoing, and as soon as we can, we will release additional information. The incident follows years of bullying endured by the gay senior at the high school, where LGBTQ+ acceptance is under assault by a school board thats engaged in a culture war inspired by far-right parental rights activists.Last year, a board meeting for the Chino Valley Unified School District erupted into chaos as members and attendees debated outing transgender students to their parents. An estimated 300 people attended and 83 commented, many waving flags and banners advocating for and against LGBTQ+ students. The board voted 4-1 to approve the policy, which required educators to notify parents within 72 hours if their child requests to use bathrooms, pronouns, or names that dont match the gender and name listed on their birth certificate. The room erupted in cheers when the measure was passed. California court rulings have since overturned the policy.Sonja Shaw, president of the board, has been a leader in the parental rights push, but denies her virulently anti-LGBTQ+ ideology has contributed to a hostile environment in the districts schools.I categorically reject the assertion that our districts policies have created an unsafe environment for students, she said. As school board president, I have always advocated for transparency, parental rights, and student safety. Every single student, regardless of their identity, deserves to feel safe and supported in our schools, and I stand by that wholeheartedly. The assaulted students mom says the culture war playing out in the school system is directly responsible for the climate of fear that her son and other LGBTQ+ students are living in.The school district is pushing this anti-LGBTQ+ agenda, and thats trickling down to the school. My sons safety doesnt seem to be a priority for them, she said.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Gala Varo on feeling the love like never before and why shes afraid it will all go away
One thing Global All Stars continues to teach us is that this is a collection of INCREDIBLY talented queens. Theres no question that Gala Varo is that girl. From her incredible pole dancing routine in the talent show, to her instantly unforgettable lip sync to one of the strangest and most delightful picks ever, Mahna Mahna, shes snatched the hearts of the fandom if missing out on the crown. But isnt the former the best prize in the end? (Although that check would be nice, too!) For Gala, it has meant everything. PRIDE caught up with the queen to talk about how shes feeling now that all the dust has settled. She opened up about both the struggles she faced in the competition, and how shes been riding the wave of love from the audience, but also how she feels afraid that that wave will crash. She also revealed what happened before she shared with her sisters that she was considering leaving the competition early, and how friendships are what kept her going. PRIDE: Now the dust has settled and you look back at your time on Global All Stars, how are you feeling about it?GALA VARO: Well, at that time it was really, really difficult. You can see in the last episode that I was so in my head. I was thinking the worst of me, I wasnt doing so good. It was getting so hard because of the language, and I wasnt good because I hadnt won anything, any challenge. So I was like, okay, my thing is the girl group, the talent show, these physical things. So I was seeing that the next episode is going to be more comedy, more acting. For a queen that doesnt speak English, it is really hard. So it was like. Im a fighter and a survivor, so I need to push it, and maybe Im gonna lip sync, and Im gonna lip sync till the end. Yeah, I totally understand how discouraging that would be. I was shocked when you shared that you almost quit, but I loved how quickly all of your sisters rallied around you to encourage you. What did it mean to you to get that kind of support from them?Im gonna tell you a secret. That day in the morning I read letters from my best friends. My best friends [write] letters for me [for] when I feel alone or when I feel bad. It was amazing. I got the strength to keep going. I read the letters five minutes before I entered the workroom. I was having all these emotions and feelings that I wanted to share with my sisters. And they were so, so amazing, so kind, so gentle with me. They gave me all the love and support that I needed at that moment. Those moments are so beautiful in the workroom, and then you turn around and win the mini-challenge. Do you feel vindicated? It was a surprise for me because I was just trying to exist. I was like, Okay, I need to do this. And when I won I was like, I won? Why? Im not even here. My head is in another place, my head is in Mexico with my friends. The Snatch Game challenge might not have gone in the direction you wanted, but it did result in one of the wildest lip-syncs ever. How do you feel about that performance? Because I was LIVING? If you have watched me perform before, I always use sexual songs or high-energy songs. Take On Me was okay. Bang Bang is okay. But then mana, Mahna Mahna is like, Holy shit, what is happening? But actually, I like to have fun on stage. So I thought that that was a big opportunity to try to make something different, to show the judges that I also can have fun and enjoy something different. I was trying just to have fun, be silly, and make faces.I think it was a tough call for the judges because were both so amazing and wild. And Im not alone in feeling that way, the audience has really rallied around you all season. I am curious if youve seen that and if so, what its meant to you.Oh my God. The love and support from the audience is insane. Ive never lived this kind of love before. Latin people and Mexican people are really passionate; when we love, we love. And when we see our representative queens... they are our people and feeling that in this moment, I am this queen representing all of them, its a big thing. I can feel all the love, and its amazing. Sometimes I get a little bit afraid because I say, maybe one day they are going to stop loving me, or maybe when I leave the competition they are going to hate it, and they are not going to show me any more love. But I know that those are just these thoughts that are just in my head, and Im just going to give them my best. I totally get that. And that is, I can see why that would get in your head. But I will say, to combat that voice, that weve seen you at your most confident, just on fire, and loved you. Then weve seen you struggling and having moments of vulnerability, and we were with you then, too! Okay, Im gonna end with a silly question. If youre anything like me you have a big group text, and the small group text where the REAL tea gets spilled. Do you have one with your Global All Stars sisters? And if so, whos in it?Oh my God! [Laughs] You want that tea? Okay. We are 'Mango Team. The Mango Team is Soa, Eva, Athena, and Pythia, and that's it!

Beloved queer horror series 'Chucky' canceled after third season
Our favorite possessed doll has possibly been murdered for the very last time. The horror comedy series Chucky has just been canceled and will no longer return for a fourth season. The first three seasons aired on Syfy and USA Network, but now a planned abbreviated final season has been axed.Chucky is a continuation of the Child's Play series created by out gay director, Don Mancini, and follows the bloody exploits of a doll possessed by a serial killer. The show follows a group of teens as they try to keep Chucky from killing everyone they love. The third season, which finished airing in May, chronicled Chucky's journey all the way to the White House as Jake (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Bjrgvin Arnarson), and Levy (Alyvia Alyn Lind) try to bring him down.Mancini, who had already planned out a fourth season, doesn't seem to be deterred by the cancellation. "I'm heartbroken over the news that Chucky won't be coming back for a fourth season, but am so grateful for the killer three years we did have," he said in a statement, Deadline reports. "I'd like to thank UCP/Syfy/Peacock/Eat the Cat, our awesome cast and Toronto-based crew (the best in the business), and finally, to our amazing fans, a big bloody hug. Your incredible #RenewChucky campaign really warmed Chucky's cold heart. Chucky will return! He ALWAYS come back."Mancini also took to X (formerly Twitter) right after the news broke to assure fans that Chucky was down but not out. "HE'LL BE BACK," he wrote. (@) The series is wild, bloody, campy, and more queer than we ever could have hoped for. From gay main characters who fall for each other to Chucky's nonbinary kids to Tiffany Valentine (Jennifer Tilly) exploring her Sapphic side, the queerness that was subtextual in the early movies is fully TEXTUAL here, which is why it's even more disappointing that this fun series has been canceled alongside so many amazing queer shows like A League of Their Own and Dead Boy Detectives, that have gotten the boot.We rarely get queer representation like this on TV, so we're going to need another network or streaming service to pick it up ASAP! Neflix, are you listening?!

Kit Connor & Rachel Zegler's Broadway debut in 'Romeo + Juliet' had the audience & CAST in TEARS
Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor made their Broadway debuts last night in the latest take on William Shakespeare's classic tragedy, Romeo + Juliet. And although the majority of their respective adoring fanbases will have to wait for a shot to see the show live, it didn't stop them from celebrating right alongside them on social media.Much fanfare was made ahead of the opening performance. Conor has amassed a slew of support following his starring role in Heartstopper, whereas Zegler had already proven herself to be cut out for The Great White Way thanks to Steven Spielberg's 2021 film adaptation of West Side Story. (@) But what fans of the two ultimately focused on the most was an endearing video of the cast taking their bows at the end of the inaugural performance. The crowd can be seen standing and cheering as the two hug. And even at a distance, it's clear they got emotional as each took center stage. (@) (@) (@) (@) "The youth are f**ked," reads the official description of director Sam Gold's Romeo + Juliet, per Playbill. "Left to their own devices in their parents world of violent ends, an impulsive pair of star-crossed lovers hurtle towards their inescapable fate. Will Ferrell says transphobia stems from not being confident or safe with yourself
Will Ferrell offered his thoughts on the source of transphobia in a profile published earlier this week.I think we fear what we dont know, the actor told The Independent. Related Will Ferrell expresses regret for his Janet Reno drag performance on SNL Thats something I wouldnt choose to do now. Ferrell and long-time best friend Harper Steele have been busily promoting their new documentary, Will & Harper, which is currently streaming on Netflix. The film follows the pair on a road trip across the U.S. and has been lauded by critics as a moving and quite funny portrait of their friendship. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Steele, a comedy writer, came out as trans in 2021, later writing a letter to friend and long-time collaborator Ferrell expressing her hope that he would stand by her and speak up for her if she were ever misgendered.According to The Independent, Will & Harper was inspired in part by Steele wondering if she would still be able to travel the country and make friends with strangers as an out trans woman. But on their road trip, Ferrell told the U.K. outlet, the pair met many people who were just You do you youre not a threat. There is hatred out there. Its very real and its very unsafe for trans people in certain situations, Ferrell admitted. But I dont know why trans people are meant to be threatening to me as a cis male. I dont know why Harper is threatening to me.Its so strange to me, because Harper is finally her, Ferrell said, returning to the topic of transphobia. Shes finally who she was always meant to be. Whether or not you can ultimately wrap your head around that, why would you care if somebodys happy? Why is that threatening to you? If the trans community is a threat to you, I think it stems from not being confident or safe with yourself. Steele said that the transphobia in ostensibly left-leaning media outlets like The New York Times is frequently in the background of my head. Its why I first tend to ask reporters who interview me if they believe in me, she said. Do they believe that I exist? That Im valid? Because thats not always part of the conversation. I like to start there. Because there are many people in the liberal community who cant seem to get their heads around it for one reason or another. Will & Harper director Josh Greenbaum told The Independent that everyone involved with the film was aware that it would be perceived as political considering the wave of Republican-backed anti-trans legislation that has swept the country in recent years. But at its core its a very pure, simple story of two friends, Greenbaum said of the doc. I think more hearts and minds can be changed and affected by that. In the climate were in now, if you smell an agenda, or you sniff out that someone is trying to convince you of anything, you lose half the audience. In no sense were we trying to avoid politics, but it didnt feel central to the story we were telling.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Trump has demonized Jewish people for years, despite his alleged support of Israel
FormerPresident Donald Trumpgave a campaign speech on Thursday, September 19, purportedly on the topic of antisemitism.During his speech, Trump lectured Jews that they must vote for him in the upcoming November presidential sweepstakes, and if they do not, that the Jewish people would be partially to blame if he is defeated. Trump repeated his perennial warning that the Democrats hold a curse over Jewish voters. Related Superman was secretly a symbol of Jews standing up to Nazi bigotry In 1934, one year after Hitlers rise to power, two Jewish men created Supermana hero that has inspired generations. Trumphas frequently questionedwhy Jewish Americans would consider voting for Democrats, especially Kamala Harris. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Sadly, and I have to say this, and it hurts me to say it, Trump continued, youre going to still vote for Democrats, and it doesnt make sense. I say all the time that any Jewish person that votes for her, especially now, her or the Democrat Party, should have their head examined.Trump then brought Israel into his diatribe. You have to defeat Kamala Harris more than any other people on Earth, Trump said, talking to Jewish voters in the audience. Israel, I believe, has to defeat her. You know that? And Ive never said this before: More than any people on Earth, Israel has to defeat her.Antisemitism is a topic that Trump has great familiarity with. Rather than working to eradicate this form of discrimination, often referred to as the longest hatred, as a high-visibility politician, Trump seems to promote and advance antisemitism.Donald Trump is a man with no shame. Posting on Yom Kippur 2023 the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, our Day of Atonement this man doesnt know the meaning of the word atonement.Posting on his so-called Truth Socialmedia platform, he wrote, Just a quick reminder for liberal Jews who voted to destroy America & Israel because you believed false narratives! Lets hope you learned from your mistake & make better choices moving forward! Happy New Year!Just a quick reminder for liberal Jews who voted to destroy America & Israel because you believed false narratives! Lets hope you learned from your mistake & make better choices moving forward! Happy New Year!Former President Donald Trump on Yom Kippur 2023He then commanded liberal Jews to Wake Up Sheep, claiming that his policies on Israel do not make him a Nazi or antisemitic. He then promoted several antisemitic tropes by criticizing supposed liberal Jews for not supporting his policies on Israel and bashing Jewish people for not voting the right way.During his occupancy at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and since reluctantly leaving the residence, Donald Trump has consistently used Jewish bodies as stepping stones to promote his far-right conspiracies. His previous diatribe chastising Jews on Truth Social included comments in October 2022 in which he wrote that U.S. Jews have to get their act together and appreciate what they have in Israel before it is too late! Trump is still smarting from having to exit the Oval Office after an estimated 75% of Jews voted for his opponent, Joe Biden, while a mere 22% gavetheir voteto the twice impeached disgraced former president.During his second presidential campaign, Trump has tried appealing to Jews by touting his supposed accomplishments for Jews and the state of Israel: He moved the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, and by declaring the Golan Heights area, taken from Syria in 1967, as the sovereign territory of Israel. On his social media site, however, Trump has rebuked Jews, who comprise a mere 2.4% of the U.S. adult population, for not fully appreciating his support of Israel. No President has done more for Israel than I have, he asserted. Somewhat surprisingly, however, our wonderful Evangelicals are far more appreciative of this than the people of the Jewish faith, especially those living in the U.S.Trump has continually fallen into the longstanding antisemitic trope of Jews allegedly having multiple loyalties: First with their faith, then with worldwide Jewry, followed by their allegiance to the state of Israel, and lastly, with their own resident country. This is a repetition of what he argued in 2019 while still President when, at the White House, he said of Jews, If you want to vote Democrat, you are being very disloyal to Jewish people and very disloyal to Israel. Trumps antisemitism and attempts to silence dissentShutterstock U.S. Republican Presidential former President Donald Trump speaks to attendees in a rally at the Bojangles Coliseum on July 24, 2024 in Charlotte, North CarolinaTrump must confront his own antisemitic words and actions before hell have any credibility in allegedly protecting the civil and human rights of Jews (or anyone else) in his own country.Only a few days prior to the release of his executive order to combat antisemitism in the U.S., Trumptoldan audience at a meeting of the American Israeli Council, A lot of you are in the real estate business, because I know you very well. Youre brutal killers, not nice people at all. But you have to vote for me you have no choice. Youre not gonna vote for Pocahontas [a reference to Sen. ElizabethWarren], I can tell you that. Youre not gonna vote for the wealth tax. Yeah, lets take 100% of your wealth away!Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office earlier that year that any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty. He didnt say originally to whom this would be disloyal, though later, in front of a gaggle of reporters on the White House lawn, he clarified, In my opinion, you vote for a Democrat, youre being very disloyal to Jewish people, and youre being very disloyal to Israel, and only weak people would say anything other than that.In a 2019 speech before the Republican Jewish Coalition, Trump said that the recently reelected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was your prime minister. This implied that Jews are not or cannot be U.S. citizens, but we are actually citizens only of Israel. So, any Jewish person who votes for a Democrat is both ignorant and disloyal to Israel, possibly to the United States as an ally of Israel, and by extension, to himself as an alleged defender of Israel. So, any Jewish person who votes for a Democrat is both ignorant and disloyal to Israel, possibly to the United States as an ally of Israel, and by extension, to himself as an alleged defender of Israel. The context of Trumps charge developed as controversy swirled around first-term Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN). In 2012 she tweeted, Israel has hypnotized the world. May Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.A few weeks later, she told an audience in D.C., I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is okay to push for allegiance to a foreign country.Confronted about this latter remark by her Democratic colleague, Nita Lowey, Omar replied, I should not be expected to have allegiance/pledge support to a foreign country in order to serve my country in Congress or serve on committees. Trump seemed not to understand the irony in his attacks on Omar, since we must chastise both Omar and Trump for invoking the centuries-old antisemitic tropeof Jews allegedly having dual or multiple loyalties. The trope goes back to Europe in the Middle Ages when the nobility and the larger citizenry accused Jews of isolating themselves and having no desire to integrate and hold allegiance to the state. Jews were blamed as national churches conducted massive campaigns, often brutally, to convert Jews to Christianity, as monarchs forced Jews onto the poorest lands and out of their countries entirely. Trump, though, would not settle by invoking the antisemitic trope of disloyalty or dual loyalties. He went so much further into the domain of Jews as cheap money-grubbers and as controllers of financial systems and of governments. This long-established libel has given populations throughout Europe justification for wide-scale attacks and government-sponsored pogroms against the Jewish people. John ODonnell, in a 1991 book about the former president of the Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino, said Trumphad told him, Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day. Before the Republican Jewish Coalition inDecember 2015, Trump gloated, Im a negotiator, like you folks. We are negotiators Is there anybody that doesnt renegotiate deals in this room? This room negotiates them perhaps more than any other room Ive ever spoken in.Trump also argued that the assembled Jews would not support himbecause he couldnt be bought, Youre not going to support me because I dont want your money. Mandatory Credit: Alan Goffinski-USA TODAY NETWORK The Unite the Right rally, Charlottesville, Virginia, August 11 12, 2017 brought together white supremacists, members of the alt-right, neo-Confederates, neo-fascists, white nationalists, neo-Nazis, and far-right militias chanting Jews Will Not Replace Us. They killed a counter-protester by plowing a car into the crowd.I think there is blame on both sides, said Trump about the rally You had a group on one side that was bad. You had a group on the other side that was also very violent. Nobody wants to say that. Ill say it right now.He criticized alt-left groups that he claimed were very, very violent. He later stated that There were very fine people on both sides. Trump focused his venom on Jewish billionaire George Soros. He erroneouslyaccused himof funding protesters against his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, and also suggestedthat Soros might have funded the refugee caravan of immigrants from Central America approaching the U.S. southern border. This added to the conspiracy theory that Jews are bringing immigrants into the United States to replace white people (and thus, the Jews will not replace us chant of the neo-Nazi white nationalists at the Charlottesville rally). The shooter of the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018 who killed 11 parishioners and wounded six others, including four brave police officers blamed Jews for bringing in an invasion of nonwhite immigrants to the United States who will diminish and slaughter the white race. The Washington establishment and the financial and media corporations that fund it exist for only one reason: to protect and enrich itself, stated Donald Trump in hisrally speechin West Palm Beach, Florida on October 14, 2016.He continued, For those who control the levers of power in Washington, and for the global special interests[i]ts a global power structure that is responsible for the economic decisions that have robbed our working class, stripped our country of its wealth and put that money into the pockets of a handful of large corporations and political entitiesThis is a conspiracy against you, the American people, and we cannot let this happen or continue. This is our moment of reckoning as a society and as a civilization itself.Trump certainly has no general grasp of history, but he definitely understood how to use the propaganda of fascism to sway public opinion. While his wife, Melania, finally admitted to plagiarizing the words of Michelle Obama in her speech before the delegates at the Republican National Convention in the summer of 2016, Donald will never admit to lifting sentiments and words verbatim from the notoriousProtocols(Minutes)of a Meeting of the Learned Elders of Zion.TheProtocolswas a fabricated antisemitic text dating from 1903 that was widely distributed by Russian Czarist forces to turn public opinion against a so-called Jewish Revolution for the purpose of convincing the populace that Jews were plotting to impose a conspiratorial international Jewish government. It is the alleged minutes of a late 19th-century meeting where Jewish leaders planned to subvert the minds, morals, and cultures of non-Jews by controlling politicians, the press, and world economies for world domination. TheProtocolswere translated into many languages and circulated throughout the world. During his Florida speech, Donald Trump succeeded in having his antisemiticleitmotivdog whistle heard, since, among many of his ardent supporters, the racist Christian white supremacist so-called alt-right received it loud and clear.Former Ku Klux Klan leader and current racist radio host,David Duke, added his praise of Trumps incredible speech on his radio show October 14, 2016, saying, Donald Trump had an incredible speech last night in West Palm Beach, maybe the strongest, most all out speech concerning the war that is being waged against us and the war that is being waged by the oligarchs who control the international banks and the globalists. These Jewish supremacists and these Jewish radicals who have been dominating international banking, the financing of politics and leaders, bribing them in effect, the people who have controlled the media, the people who have controlled the political apparatus in so many countries, who have controlled much of the academia, much of the discourse, theyre crazy.Theyre willing to risk World War III for their political objectives in the Middle East, in Israel, and elsewhere, Duke said. The Christian white nationalist website, The Right Stuff, celebrated Trumps Florida speech. Lawrence Murraywrote an article affirming that somehow Trump manages to channel Goebbels and Detroit Republicanism all at the same time.Joseph Goebbels, Nazi minister for Propaganda and Public Education, wrote and spoke continually of an alleged Jewish conspiracy to undermine German culture and civilization itself. Speaking at the September 1935 Nazi Party Congress in Nuremberg, for example, Goebbels connected Bolshevism with international Jewry. He warned Nazi party members of a supposed international Jewish conspiracy to snuff out western civilization.Toward the end of his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump ranan adportraying three rich Jews- then-Federal Reserve Board Chair Janet Yellen, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, and financier George Soros with the narration denouncing those who control the levers of power in Washington, and the global special interests who partner with these people who dont have your good in mind.Donald Trump, during his presidential campaign, tweeted a picture of Hillary Clinton with $100 bills and a six-pointed Star of David (Mogen David), evoking the age-old stereotype of Jews as money-grubbing cheats. The meme was also on a neo-Nazi website. Trump did not apologize, but he ultimately took the tweet down from his site.Twitter screenshot Trumps July 2016 tweet criticizing then-candidate Hillary Clinton. His posted image featured a six-pointed star, a pile of cash and the words most corrupt candidate ever. Wayne Allyn Root, a far-right conspiracy theorist, asserted that Jews in Israel regard Trump as something akin to the King of Israel or the second coming of God. Does Root not realize that Jews do not believe in Jesus as the son of God or of a second coming?Of course, Trump delighted in Roots words, and only half-jokingly announced to a group of reporters that I am the Chosen One.Though he talksabout Jews, Trump rarely talkstous. He directs his comments to conservative Christian Evangelicals. He stirred up what Christians call The Rapture, in which Armageddon will come in the area of Israel. Jews will be sacrificed so that good Christians will go forth to meet Jesus on the final judgment day. It is a cynical use of the Jewish people to conform to prophecy in the Christian testaments. Many of these people are known as Christian Zionists. They use Jews for their own supposed purposes. It does not matter that Trumps son-in-law is an orthodox Jew, that his daughter Ivanka converted to Judaism, and that he has Jewish grandchildren. It does not matter that Trump has employed Jewish people and counts Jews among his friends. What is clear, though, is that when anyone uses an already marginalized group to advance their own agendas or careers by tokenizing or feigning support, that itself is an act of oppression, in this case, antisemitism.Donald Trump uses Jews, and by so doing, he demonstrated his antisemitic bigotry by attempting to weaponize Jewish bodies! Mpox cases doubled in Los Angeles County over the past four months
Mpox is on the rise again in L.A. County. On Monday, the Los Angeles County Department of Health reported that cases of the disease, formerly known as Monkeypox, had more than doubled over the past four weeks, up to 52 compared to the 24 cases reported during the previous four-week period. Related CDC is urging LGBTQ+ people to get mpox vaccine during Pride Month It gives you the freedom to enjoy and be proud during Pride. As the Los Angeles Blade reported, the department noted that 70 percent of the new cases were among people who were unvaccinated. It encouraged at-risk communities to get the two-dose Jynneos vaccine, which is available at pharmacies and is offered for free at public health clinics across L.A. County, according to KTLA. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The department noted that men who have sex with men or transgender people, trans people who have sex with men or trans people, sex workers, anyone who engages in intimate physical contact at large events, people with HIV, and the sexual partners of any of the above are particularly at-risk.The virus that causes mpox spreads through close personal contact, including direct skin-to-skin contact and contact with objects, fabrics, and surfaces. The L.A. County Department of Health issued recommendations for slowing the spread of mpox, including individuals reducing their number of sexual partners and limiting their attendance at sex parties. It also advised against sharing items like sex toys, towels, clothing, bedding, and toothbrushes and recommended that bedding, sex toys, and other intimate items be washed after each use.Mpox causes a painful rash, but symptoms can also include headache, fever, chills, body ache, fatigue, and swollen lymph glands, and in some cases, may lead to hospitalization. The L.A. County Department of Health recommended that at-risk individuals talk to their sexual partners about mpox symptoms and refrain from sexual activity if they or their partners show signs of the disease. It also recommended individuals exchange contact information with new partners so that they can follow up if they show mpox symptoms. While the virus that causes mpox is considered endemic in central and west African countries, it began spreading in the U.S. and Europe in 2022, causing an outbreak that saw, at its peak between July and August 2022, around 3,000 new cases per week in the U.S. During that outbreak, at least 58 people in the U.S. died of the disease. Anyone can contract mpox, but the 2022 global outbreak was particularly prominent among men who have sex with men.Case numbers in the U.S. have dropped dramatically since 2022 with the widespread availability of the two-dose Jynneos vaccine, which is now widely available. But in May, the CDC reported that only 23 percent of people at risk of mpox infection in the U.S. had received both doses of the vaccine.Messaging around the virus has all but disappeared in the U.S. since the Department of Health and Human Services officially declared an end to the national public health emergency over a year ago. Since then, small mpox outbreaks have occurred in New York, North Carolina, and Colorado. And a study released earlier this year found that closeted men who have sex with men were less likely to get vaccinated or treated for mpox due to a lack of information about the virus and the vaccine.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

To understand JD Vance, you need to meet the TheoBros
This articlefirst appeared on Mother Jones. It has been republished with the publications permission. On July 15,when former President Donald Trump first appeared at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, he brought along two new accessories. One was a large bandage covering his ear, which had been nicked by a would-be assassins bullet. The other was Ohios first-term senator andHillbilly Elegyauthor JD Vance, who was about to debut as the GOP vice presidential hopeful. Related JD Vances foreword to Project 2025 founders book says Democrats are wolves who must be killed He also suggests that liberals have poisoned Americas soil. Two days later, after paying tribute to his wife, Ushathe child of immigrants from Indiaand their three biracial kids, Vance portrayed a vision of America that resonated deeply with Trump voters. America is not just an idea, he said solemnly. It is a group of people with a shared history and a common future. It is, in short, a nation. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today To many viewers at home, this seemed like the stuff of a boilerplate, patriotic stump speech. But the words shared history lit up a far-right evangelical corner of social media. America is aparticularplace with aparticularpeople, Joel Webbon, a Texas pastor and podcaster, wroteon X. This is one of the most important political questions facing America right now, postedformer Trump administration official William Wolfe. Answer it wrong, we will go the way of Europe, where the native-born populations are being utterly displaced by third world migrants and Muslims. Answer it right, and we can renew America once more.Vance was embracing one of their most cherished beliefs: America should belong to Christians, and, more specifically, white ones. The American nation is an actual historical people, says Stephen Wolfe (no relation to William), the author of the 2022 bookThe Case for Christian Nationalism, not just a hodgepodge of various ethnicities, but actually a place of settlement and rootedness. For this group of evangelical leaders, Vance, a 40-year-old former Marine who waxes rapturous about masculinity and womens revered role as mothers, was the perfect tribune to spread their gospel of patriarchal Christian nationalism. For years, graying, khaki-clad evangelists have faithfully made the rounds at conservative events. However, as Wolfe, a 41-year-old former Princeton postdoc, writes in his book, these men in wrinkled, short-sleeve golf shirts, sitting plump in their seats are yesterdays Christians. Among younger activists, they inspire the rolling of eyesthey are the embodiment of an ineffective boomer approach to taking over the United States for Jesus. In their place, a group of young pastors hope to spearhead a Christian nationalist glow-up as they eagerly await a Christian prince to rule America. These often bearded thirty- and fortysomethings have suits that actually fit. They are extremely online, constantly posting on myriad platforms, broadcasting their YouTube shows from mancaves, and convening an endless stream of conferences for likeminded followers. Lets call them, as one scholar I spoke with did, the TheoBros. For all their youthful modishness, this group is actuallymoreconservative than their older counterparts. Many TheoBros, for example, dont think women belong in the pulpit or the voting boothand even want torepeal the 19th Amendment. For some, prison reform would involve replacing incarceration with public flogging. Unlike more mainstream Christian nationalists, like House Speaker Mike Johnson, who are obsessed with the US Constitution, many TheoBros believe that the Constitution isdeadand that we should be governed by the Ten Commandments.InAmerican Reformer, their unofficial magazine, hagiographies of Spanish dictator FranciscoFrancoappear alongside full-throated defenses of countries that execute gay people. On podcasts, the TheoBrosunpackthe perils of multiculturalism, exposeBurning Mans wicked agenda, andpeel backthe nefarious feminist plot of Taylor Swift. In WolfesThe Case for Christian Nationalism, one of their seminal texts, he writes that in an ideal Christian nation, heretics could be executed. The rise of the TheoBros worries more mainstream religious conservatives. Janet Mefferd, a former Christian radio host and journalist who tracks their ascendancy, says her community is alarmed to see an extremist movement gaining traction. Im not sure what the endgame is, other than they want to advance Christian nationalism, she says. But a lot of us find that terrifying.Im not sure what the endgame is, other than they want to advance Christian nationalismbut a lot of us find that terrifying. The TheoBros strategy is bottom-up: They aim to convert small American towns into Christian enclaves. But it is also top-down: Some are working to position themselves close to the locus of federal power. Vance, a Catholic convert married to a Hindu, would seem an unlikely hero for a movement of devout Protestants who believe in a homogeneous America. But over the last few years, his political orbit has increasingly overlapped with that of the TheoBrosso much so that to careful observers, his public echoes of their ideas are beginning to sound less like coincidence and more like dog whistles. And those dog whistles signal the major themes of this election: hypermasculinity, declining birthrates, ethnonationalismand no small measure of carefully curated misogyny. If you want to know some of the actors who red-pilled Vance, or at least those who flock to him, you need to meet the TheoBros.YouTube screenshots Clockwise from top-left: Douglas Wilson, Joel Webbon, Josh Abbotoy, Andrew Isker, William Wolfe, and Brian Sauv With no meetings, website, or an explicit statement of faith that unifies their beliefs, the TheoBros are not an official organization. They identify with 16th-century French theologian John Calvin, who spawned a rigid and deterministic form of Protestantism. Julie Ingersoll, a University of North Florida religion scholar, traces the current movement back to R.J. Rushdoony, an Armenian American philosopher who popularized the idea of Christian nationalism (and homeschooling) in the early 1970s.Out of Rushdoonys movement emerged two camps: the charismatic Christians, now known as the New Apostolic Reformation, and the reformed Protestants, which include the TheoBros. They share the goal of creating a Christian nation, says Ingersoll, but differ on a key point of theology: Adherents of the New Apostolic Reformation believe that God is still speaking directly to people through pastors who have declared themselves apostles and prophets. The TheoBros, meanwhile, believe that God said all he needed to say in the Bible. Many TheoBros are also proponents of postmillennialism, the idea that believers can hasten Jesus return by fighting against the satanic forces of liberal excess. TheoBro Aaron Renn, an Accenture consultant turned Christian pundit, has described our current era as a negative world, where Christians are persecuted for their beliefs. Andrew Isker, another Bro, calls it trashworld.Like all self-respecting millennials, the TheoBros have little tolerance for boomers, with the exception of their patriarch, Douglas Wilson, a 71-year-old pastor in Moscow, Idaho. When he was younger, Wilson imagined himself going into the family businessChristian bookstoresbut after a stint in the military, he moved to Moscow in 1975 to study philosophy at the University of Idaho, where he became involved with the Jesus People, a kind of mashup of evangelical and hippie culture. He helped found Christ Church, the congregation over which he still presides and that regularly draws crowds of 1,300.Wilson has since turned the college town into his own Christian kingdom. He helped found New Saint Andrews College, the Canon Press publishing house, and Logos School, one of the nations first classical Christian schools, where students exclusively study the Western canon. Wilson embraced Calvinism in 1988 and remade his church from the freewheeling Jesus People hub into something far more sober and buttoned-up, where women couldnt be church leaders and the only music allowed was hymns and psalms. In the early 1990s, Wilson helped launch the Association of Classical Christian Schools, which had 502 member institutions across the United States as of March 2023.The sexual act cannot be made into an egalitarian pleasuring party. A man penetrates, conquers, colonizes, plants. A woman receives, surrenders, accepts. His influence over Moscow has not been without controversy. In a 2021Viceexpos, former members of Christ Church alleged that ministers had encouraged them to stay in abusive relationships. That tracks with Wilsons 1999 book,Fidelity: How to Be a One-Woman Man, in which he wrote, The sexual act cannot be made into an egalitarian pleasuring party. A man penetrates, conquers, colonizes, plants. A woman receives, surrenders, accepts. For that reason, Wilson wrote, the dynamic of a dominant man and a submissive woman is an erotic necessity. (Wilson called allegations of the church urging women to stay in abusive relationships categorically false.)Wilson has also promoted another form of dominance. In the 1996 bookSouthern Slavery: As It Was, Wilson and his co-author argued that the master-slave dynamic was a relationship based upon mutual affection and confidence, and there has never been a multi-racial society which has existed with such mutual intimacy and harmony in the history of the world as that of the antebellum South. (In a 2020blog post, Wilson said he now allows that while the benevolent master is not a myth, the idea of the horrific taskmaster is no abolitionist myth either.) When I asked Wilson about his controversial statements, he likened himself to a chef who strategically deploys jalapeno peppers: Then some of my enemies online have combed through my writings, have gathered up all the jalapenos and put them on one Ritz cracker. In July, at the National Conservatism Conference in Washington, DC, Wilson shared the stage with Sens. Josh Hawley (R-MO), Ron Johnson (R-WI), and Mike Lee (R-UT), as well as Vance, who auditioned his America is a people bit a week before his star turn at the GOP convention. Wilson agrees with Vances suggestion that children should be allotted votes, managed by their parents. I would like to see elections where households vote, he told me. Men, as the heads of households, would actually cast the votes. Though he believes that womens suffrage was a mistake, he would allow a special exception for single mothers. Wilson offered the crowd a few one-liners (Im a Presbyterian, not a Lesbyterian), but mostly, he talked about the persecution of Christians. It used to be that the sexually troubled had to keep their kinks hidden away in the closet, he mused. Now it is the conservative Christian who needs to keep his virtues hidden in the recesses of the closet. After the National Conservatism Conference, Wilson appeared at the Believers Summit, which was headlined by Trump and hosted by the conservative political group Turning Point USA.But its not just conferences and interviews with the likes ofTucker Carlsonwhere Wilson promotes his ideas. He has a blog, a podcast, and a YouTube channel, thanks mostly to the urging of his children and younger colleagues. One example is that every year since 2018, Wilson has been celebrating what he calls No Quarter November: The month where we say out loud what everyone is thinking. In a2023 video, which was the brainchild of one of his sons, Wilson sits at a sumptuously appointed Thanksgiving table, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, and addresses the camera. If you think of my blog as a shotgun, he says, this is the month when I saw off all my typical, careful qualifications and blast away with a double-barreled shorty. His wife, clad in an apron, brings out a turkey and places it in front of him, and then the tranquil scene is interrupted by a blaring alarm and a glowing red perimeter breach sign. Wilson excuses himself, heads to his garage, and straps on a flamethrower. After using it to light a cigar, he aims the fire at cardboard cutouts of Disney princesses Elsa and Ariel, and the logos of Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and Netflix.Wilsons willingness to make campy content sets him apart, says Rachel Tabachnick, an extremism researcher who has been studying Christian nationalism for decades. Instead of a crotchety old guy talking about stoning people, hes like, super cool, she says. Hes witty. In subsequent videos, Wilsontackledwomens culpability in rape, thedark sideof empathy, and thevirtuesof something called the patriarchythat which, according to oursoi-disantand lisping political theorists, must be smashed. Only they say something like thmasth.Shutterstock Wilson has usedhis platforms to anoint the next generation of ultraconservative reformed Christian pastors, all of whom happened to be men. Mefferd, the conservative Christian journalist, told me that WolfesThe Case for Christian Nationalismgot traction in mainstream Christian circles in part because Doug Wilson endorsed. Another Wilsonprotgis Joel Webbon, a 38-year-old pastor who hosts a podcast and YouTube show, which he films from a wingback leather chair in a book-lined room.Webbon wasnt always reformedhe is an alumnus of a Bible school run by a New Apostolic Reformation affiliated outfit, which he now considers straight-up heretical. In his 20s, he broke from the group, moved to Texas, and started his own church. In a video from a few years ago, WebboncreditedWilson with emboldening him to say whatever he wantedlike telling a guest that the Founding Fathers werent responsible for the slave trade because Africans had done the actual kidnapping and enslaving.Kamala sees happy, large families and hates them. She wants them destroyed. She wants you to never be able to have this. She is a nasty, bitter harridan who hates all that is true, good, and beautiful. For Webbon, it was intensely liberating to watch Wilson speak in public without worrying about being canceled. You stay in your little corner, you stay on your little leash, because youre like, I dont know what will happen, Webbon said. But when you see some other guy do it, and youre likethats the worst thing that can happen?Vicewrites an article about you? [Christianity Todayeditor-in-chief] Russell Moore wont invite you to his birthday party anymore? Like, thats it. At arecent conference, he registered dismay over immigrants in his community. Its like full, straight-up Hindu garb at our neighborhood swimming pool, that my daughter is asking [about and] Im trying to explain. In August, heremarkedon his show that a lot of people are gonna be surprised when youre spending eternity worshipping Christ next to Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee and Jonathan Edwards, and, you know, George Whitefield and Martin Luther King Jr.s in hell.Webbon is so impressed by his own audacity that he maintains an onlinelistof all the controversies in which hes become embroiled. There, he explains why he called Christian men living in California stupid (they could just move to a red state); why he once ordered his wife to stop reading a book on theology (he didnt want her exposed to beliefs that were different from his own); and why he believes in a patriarchal household structure (the Bible says so). Webbon, who is planning to host a conference in Texas next spring called Christ Is King: How to Defeat Trashworld!maintainsthat a return to the Constitution is impossible and that the only viable alternative is the Ten Commandments. Some of Wilsons other acolytes are attempting to create their own versions of Moscow, Idaho. Take Brian Sauv, a 33-year-old Christian recording artist, podcaster, and pastor of Refuge Church in Ogden, Utah. Like Webbon, Sauv wasnt always reformedRefuge began as a charismatic Christian church. After the lead pastor resigned in a scandal, the then-24-year-old Sauv ascended to take his place, immersed himself in reformed theology, and moved the church in a new direction. Today, he presides over a Moscow-esque ecosystem: a publishing house called New Christendom Press, as well as St. Brendans Classical Christian Academy, modeled after those in Wilsons network. Can you feel it in the sails? reads St. Brendans website. The stiff breeze out of Moscow, Idaho? We can.On his three podcasts and to his more than 53,000 followers on X, Sauv regularly states that womens primary function is to bear children. In July, after Vances comments about childless cat ladies who are miserable began widely circulating, he posted: It is desperately sad to think of all the intentionally barren women who will find themselves totally alone in their 50s, realizing their irreversible mistake. They will wish they could trade it allmoney, vacations, independence, all of itfor children they can now never have. But unlike more mainstream conservatives, Sauv does not even pretend to champion the idea of a Judeo-Christian nation. He posted in July, [O]ur political system is heavily influenced by Jews who reject Christ and embrace all manner of evils. An even more well-connected Wilson emulator is Josh Abbotoy, executive director ofAmerican Reformerand managing partner of a venture capital fund and real estate firm called New Founding. A former fellow of the right-wing think tank the Claremont Institute, Abbotoy reported that he recentlyparticipatedin a Project 2025 presidential transition strategic planning session hosted by the right-wing think tank the Heritage Foundation.Bucks County Beaconreporter Jennifer Cohnrevealedventure capitalist Chris Buskirk was listed as the editor and publisher. None other than JD Vance.Cara Owsley/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK Vice presidential candidate JD Vance speaks at his rally inside Middletown High School, Monday, July 22, 2024 Thiel, Vances mentor and former employer, is also a major funder of the National Conservatism movement. Obsessed with global birthrates, Thiel spent $10 million on his protgs successful 2022 Senate campaign. In July, shortly after Trump had announced Vance as his running mate, Cohnsurfaceda tweet by New Foundings network director, Josh Clemans: a photo of Vance with several New Founding staffers. The caption read Our guy.New Founding lists as a partner the Society for American Civic Renewal, a secretive fraternal order founded by Indiana shampoo baron Charles Haywood, who describes himself as an aspiring Christian warlord. According to founder Nate Fischer, New Founding wants to form the backbone of a renewed American regime and that its members understand the nature of authority and its legitimate forceful exercise. But its main public-facing project appears to be turning tracts of land in Appalachia into Christian communities. Promotional materials describe a community of unmatched seclusion where simple country faith protects local culture from rainbow flags and crime. Potential buyers, he advises, should not delay. Whos going to grab the land? Is it going to be good, based people who want to build something inspiring, something authentic to the regions history, or is it going to be Bill Gates and BlackRock and hippies from California? One eager customer is 38-year-old TheoBro Andrew Iskerthe pastor who interned at Wilsons church, studied divinity at New Saint Andrews, and co-wrote a book on Christian nationalism with Andrew Torba, the openlyantisemiticCEO of the social media platform Gab. In July, Iskerannouncedon X that he planned to move his family of seven to lead a church in a New Founding community in Tennessee. Life in his native Minnesota, he said, had become untenable because of permissive laws around trans rights and abortion, not to mention how hospitable the state has been to refugees. Minnesota is one of the top destinations for resettling foreign people hostile to our way of life, he said. That month, Iskerspokeat a Texasconferenceabout the war on white America alongside Paul Gottfried, the mentor of prominent white nationalist Richard Spencer. The conference was hosted by the True Texas Project, a far-right group with ties to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.Like many TheoBros, Isker sees much to like in Vance. In early July, before Trump announced his running mate, Iskerreferredto him as Senator JD Vance (R-Heritage America). In late July, heposteda video of Vance and told his 29,000 followers, You need to double down on childless cat lady discourse. Kamala sees happy, large families and hates them. She wants them destroyed. She wants you to never be able to have this. She is a nasty, bitter harridan who hates all that is true, good, and beautiful. One problem is that there simply are not enough TheoBros to populate Christian communities like the one Isker plans to move to. Enter William Wolfe, the founder of the Center for Baptist Leadership, which aims to persuade members of the Southern Baptist Convention that it, the largest of all Protestant denominations in the United States, has fallen prey to the corrupting forces of liberalism. Baptists are only the beginning. Wolfe wants to win over the entire evangelical mainstream, which he and other TheoBros refer to as Big Eva. In August, hepostedon X, Once you realize that Big Eva thinks its a bigger sin to desire to preserve the customs, heritage, values, and cultural homogeneity of your own nation than to kill the unborn in the womb, you can better understand their moral framework.Wolfe served in the Trump administration both as the deputy assistant secretary of defense and as director of House affairs at the Department of State. He is also an alumnus of Heritage Action, a sister organization of the Heritage Foundation, the arch-conservative think tank behind Project 2025, whose chief architect,Russell Vought, posted on X that he was proud to work with @William_E_Wolfe on scoping out a sound Christian Nationalism. A few months later, theBucks County Beaconuncovereda lengthy online manifesto on the goals of Christian nationalists. The document, which listed Wolfe and Joel Webbon as contributing editors and Oklahoma Sen. Dusty Deevers as a co-author, called for civil magistrates to usher in the establishment of the Ten Commandments as the foundational law of the nation. The manifesto doesnt specify exactly how Christian nationalists should achieve these goals. As Tabachnick, the extremism researcher, interprets it, the TheoBros are imagining a utopia where they are going to be free to be entrepreneurs in all different senses, including the tech world that theyre mixing with so freely. The key, she said, is that authoritarianism is required to have the utopian vision.Last year, the extremism watchdog group Right Wing Watchposteda video of Wolfe quoting a scripture passage. There are times when even the God of peace proclaims by his providence, to arms! he says. If we have ever lived in a point of time in American history since then that we could argue that now is a time to arms again, I think we are getting close.Shutterstock William WolfesChristian nationalism manifesto made the rounds on social media, but in mainstream conservative outlets, it was Stephen Wolfe who brought TheoBro ideas to the wider world. In his book, which was praised by editors at theFederalistand theAmerican Conservative, Wolfe paints America as a gynocracy whose government and culture have been feminized by unhappy women leaders. (Sound familiar?) He has stated on X that women should not have the right tovote, and that interethnic marriage can be sinful.Wolfe grew up in Napa, California, and his father was an admirer of the right-wing pundit and erstwhile GOP presidential candidate Pat Buchanan. After attending West Point and serving in the Army, Wolfe earned advanced degrees before leaving academia to do the Wendell Berry thing in North Carolina with his wife and four kids. Over the summer, Wolfe, 41, agreed to speak with me on the condition that I refer to him as Dr. Wolfe and call him an expert on Christian nationalism. The Dr. Wolfe I spoke with was a more muted version of the firebrand Id watched online. He said his ideal version of America would be led by a Caesar figure. Gay marriage would be strictly prohibited. Women would not be allowed to voteinstead, men would vote for their households. When I brought up the bit from his book about heretics being killed, he grew annoyed. I do think its permissible, in principle, for a state to suppress theological heresy, but that doesnt mean that its prudent or proper, suitable in every circumstance or every tradition or way of life. The Founding Fathers, he added, had encouraged religious liberty, so killing heretics would not be appropriate in the United States that we inhabit. We turned to remarks he had made at a recent conference convened by Brian Sauv: I think we need to reflect on this idea of Judeo-Christianity, or Judeo-Christian worldview, or Judeo-Christian whatever, and really eradicate that from our thinking. Because if we say that America is a Judeo-Christian country, then it cant be a Christian country, okay? What role, I asked him, would Jews play? After a deep sigh, he told me that they would be allowed to exercise their religion freely. We need to reflect on this idea of Judeo-Christianity, or Judeo-Christian worldview, or Judeo-Christian whatever, and really eradicate that from our thinking. Because if we say that America is a Judeo-Christian country, then it cant be a Christian country, okay?We spoke a week before Vances RNC speech, and Wolfes remarks helped me understand what the TheoBros heard in Vances phrase about America as a people. The founders, Wolfe noted, intended for their country to be Anglo-Protestant with an American inflection. America, he continued, is a place of settlement and rootedness, but its an open ethnicity in which people can become one of us. Which is to say that, like some others, Wolfe is not necessarily opposed to the idea of nonwhite people in Americaas long as they agree to assimilate to the Anglo-Protestant dominant culture. In this telling, America is not a pluralistic society at all, but rather one in which there exists an uneasy truce between Christians and those they reluctantly tolerate. Toward the end of our conversation, I asked Wolfe what motivated him. I want Christians to be more assertive and to recognize the Christian heritage of the American way of life, and to seek to restore that, he said. This is a Christian country, and weve got to work to restore it to what it once was.In his keynoteaddressat Sauvs conference, titled Why Multicultural Pluralism Fails and What to Build Instead, Wolfe called the concept of America as a melting pot an early 20th-century idea cooked up by a Jew in New York who despised the confident Anglo-Protestant establishment. WASPs were the distinct ethnicity of America, he insisted, and America should only welcome those who aspired to assimilate. As he put it, This is our homeland, and we welcome you on the condition of conformity. Or, in the words of JD Vance, America is a group of people.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Candidate Will Rollins hits his Republican opponent hard with corruption accusations
On November 5, the fate of the House of Representatives, and maybe democracy itself, hinges on just a handful of candidates in swing districts across the country. California Democrat Will Rollins is one of them.A Democratic majority in the House, accompanied by a win for Kamala Harris for the presidency, would deny Donald Trump a repeat of his January 6 plot to overturn the election by putting it in the hands of his MAGA allies in Congress. The stakes couldnt be higher. Rollins, 43, a former federal prosecutor, is making his second run against 16-term Republican incumbent Ken Calvert to represent California District 41 in Riverside County and the Coachella Valley.Calvert voted against certifying the 2020 election results. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Rollins was in Los Angeles, just west of his district, when we spoke between fundraising events in support of his sophomore campaign.LGBTQ Nation: We last spoke in October 2022, in the heat of your first campaign against Calvert. You lost that race, 52.3% to 47.7%. There were high hopes that a redrawn CA-41, now including solidly blue and very gay Palm Springs, could help flip the longtime red district but it didnt happen. Who do you blame? Will Rollins: (Laughing) Me, for not getting into the race early enough. I think that was the key lesson from the first campaign, because I think if we had had a little bit more time, we could have flipped the seat in 2022. Because I only had six months after that primary and going from a job in national security and law enforcement to become the congressional candidate in a hotly-contested, high-profile House race was a steep learning curve. And also, it just takes time to introduce yourself to voters. What we saw in the midterms is, where people got a chance to know me, I beat Calvert by 20 points in the Coachella Valley and not just Palm Springs. So voters did get to know me there, because we were able to communicate with them through messaging, through events. And then on the other side of the district, in western Riverside County part of the LA media market I just did not have enough time to communicate with voters in that part of our district. And we also didnt have the resources. In the first campaign, I raised a good amount of money, but its been nothing like the massive arsenal weve been able to build by starting a campaign in May of 2023 versus virtually less than one year before the midterm election with no prior political experience. So the fact that we almost beat the longest-serving Republican in Congress from California after six months is a very good sign to me that we will ultimately finish the job this November, because more people are going to know who we are. Lets talk about that progress. In California, we have a nonpartisan primary system, known colloquially as a jungle primary. This year, you went head-to-head with Calvert and a second Democrat in the primary in March and you swamped the other Democrat. But together, your totals added up to almost exactly the same margin as yours against Calvert in the general election in 2022. In other words, youre on track to lose again to the Republican by the same percentage as you did two years ago. Whats changed since then, and why should you expect a different outcome now?Well, primary electorates are just a different ballgame in California, and this year we had Nikki Haley and Donald Trump in the Republican primary. That really juiced a lot of Republican turnout. And I think there was something like a six-to-eight point gap between Republican and Democratic voters in the primary with one of the lowest primary election turnouts ever in California. So we werent too worried about that low number, especially because we didnt spend very much money, which was a smart, strategic decision on our part, because we wanted to save it for the general election. And if you look at just the projections from the midterms to 2024, its expected to be a 50% increase in turnout, with an additional 120,000 people voting in this November election compared to the midterms. Democratic enthusiasm now is off the charts, and thats going to be a huge part of our path to victory. According to the latest campaign financial reports, youve raised more money than Calvert, youve spent more money than Calvert, and you have more money on hand than he does. Youre also ahead in outside spending for your campaign and against Calverts. But as an incumbent, Calvert gets a boost, with the ability to spend money mailing CA41 constituents on the taxpayers dime, among other perks of incumbency. How do you counter that kind of insider advantage?Well, the good news is we know that our resources are working, because we had a one-point lead in our last internal poll, and thats a great position to be in at this point against a 32-year incumbent. It means that the work weve been putting in for the last three years is actually paying off and that our message is breaking through to the electorate. But to your point, I think theres a lot of advantages for an incumbent, especially a Republican incumbent whos willing to take unlimited funding from corporations and whose bulk of contributions come from corporations and special interests. Weve had close to 60,000 unique donors to our campaign, versus somebody that raises most of his money from outside of California. The fact that he abused a loophole in Congress barring constituent mailings during the 60-day blackout period before the March primary is a testament that he could care less about burning your tax dollars to benefit himself, and hes done that for three decades. Hes made up to $20 million since first taking office in 92. Hes directed earmarks to his own personal real estate investments, while the rest of us who live in Riverside County are seeing astronomical housing prices.Thats a good segue to my next question. You and the Democratic nominee for president, Kamala Harris, share an important line on your resumes: you were both government prosecutors. But while her opponent has been indicted and convicted, yours has only faced accusations of corruption. What are the charges you and others have made against Calvert and how are you making your case? The most important thing is, just think of the source of the allegations and the complaints about him, because they certainly didnt start with me. They started with Fox News doing a seven-minute documentary on his use of earmarks to benefit his own land. The Orange County Register has reported on this, and the LA Times and the National Review. His own Republican colleagues in the House tried to keep him off the Appropriations committee because they were worried about ethical issues. The depressing reality of Washington, D.C., is that sometimes things can be unethical but still legal, because we have a corrupt campaign finance system and a corrupt lobbying system and folks in office who are willing to abuse their positions of power for personal gain. No party has a monopoly on this. It just happens to be that Ken Calvert embodies it and personifies it because of his own record.I think more important is, what do we do to fix this long-term for the country? Thats why Ive been talking about banning stock trading by members of Congress and insider real estate dealings by members of Congress, which is how Calverts gotten rich.If you win and Calvert loses, would you go after him on those charges? Its up to the Justice Department to investigate wrongdoing, so I think rather than being vindictive as a member of Congress, my goal is to fix this long-term. What we really need are public servants on both sides of the aisle that are willing to take votes to police themselves because people are rightfully pissed-off at Congress.Congressional swing districts in California are going to determine control of the House. How much support are you getting from national Democrats, and how much more do you need? The party has been incredible this cycle, and the leadership, in particular. [House Minority Leader] Hakeem Jeffries did his first fundraising event for any challenger in the country for our campaign in January of this year. That was a very encouraging sign, and I really appreciate his support from the beginning of my second campaign. We only need four seats to get the majority back, and leadership knows that the contrast in this race between a former federal prosecutor and somebody who tops the rankings of the most corrupt members of Congress is a winning contrast for our party in this district. Not long after your March primary, you were a co-host for a DNC fundraiser in the Palm Springs area headlined by Jill Biden and hosted by President Barack Obamas gay ambassador to Spain, along with Barry Manilow, among others, which sounds super gay and like an example of the power of the LGBTQ+ community in the Coachella Valley. You and your partner, Paolo Benvenuto, moved to Palm Springs before the last election in 2022. Whats life been like for a gay couple in the city with the highest per capita gay population in the United States, and who were you more excited to meet at that fundraiser, Jill Biden or Barry Manilow?Well, we love Barry, and weve been lucky to have gotten to know him and his partner over both campaigns. They are just amazing and we are so grateful to them. And of course, I love Barrys music, and theyre such awesome members of the LGBT community and the Palm Springs local community. I mean, their involvement in so many issues is incredible. And its great to live in Palm Springs. I think what we love most about it is the ability to just feel like you belong and like youre normal. You know, thats what most LGBT Americans want: to feel like they can be themselves in public without any self-consciousness. And of course, the Coachella Valley is just one of the most stunning places of natural physical beauty on Earth, and we wake up every morning there feeling grateful to be able to live in a city like Palm Springs. The First Lady is also awesome, by the way. I didnt want to leave her out. Her willingness to fight for military families and her role in helping to end Dont Ask, Dont Tell, in particular, really resonate with me personally, because she, of course, was a military mom, and then she went out and tried to make sure that everybody could serve the country they love, no matter who they love. It was especially personal and powerful to be able to help the First Lady with that event and to get a chance to meet her in person. Calvert spent his career in Congress voting down pro-LGBTQ+ legislation, but after Palm Springs was drawn into your district, he voted for the Respect for Marriage Act. Has he pandered to the LGBTQ+ community in other ways since, and if so, would he be right to claim that hes fairly representing his constituents? I think the funniest part about his pandering is he cant even do that right, because while he voted for that marriage bill, he also voted to continue employment discrimination against LGBT people and he voted to defund LGBTQ senior centers. So I guess his philosophy is, we can get married on Saturday, but as we age, we dont deserve to eat.You were quoted in The New York Times recently about the collective effort to label Donald Trumps GOP weird. What about Ken Calvert is weird?Probably the weirdest thing to me is he got caught with a prostitute in the 90s, which I dont judge, but I do judge the fact that he wants to make it illegal for women to control their own bodies. Thats weird and unfortunate behavior, to say the least. Whats the single most important thing the world should do to address the climate crisis?Thats a tough one to choose just one. I would say, I think America has to keep leading technologically on climate because we have to be the global hub of the clean tech industry. And given our economic, our global economic dominance, if we can establish a clear lead in green technology in the 21st century, itll give us the leverage that we need moving forward to apply pressure on countries like China and India and our partners in Europe to get down to the emissions levels that we so desperately need in order to save our species.Would you support a form of mandatory national service for young people in the military, or some other form of public service, like the Peace Corps or Teach for America? Yes, 100%. And I think it would help restore some of the personal contacts and community that has started to dissipate with the rise of social media and smartphones. And I also think its really important to restore civic responsibility and appreciation for a democracy that a lot of people died to give us.Theres a scene in the classic gay movie The Birdcage where Diane Weist suggests that her daughter get married to whip up support for her senator husband played by Gene Hackman. Have you and Paolo ever considered the same tactic?I dont think he wants to inherit my credit card debt (laughing). But yes, that would be a good fundraiser. What can you tell us about Paolo? Where did you meet, and if you do get married, whos going to propose to whom?Thats the million-dollar question. We met in New York at a mutual friends birthday party, and I know love at first sight is a cliche, but we definitely hit it off right away and weve been together almost 14 years now. Weve been debating whos supposed to propose to whom for a long time now, because neither one of us has been proactive enough to do it. I think its mainly just laziness.I have some hypotheticals. J.D. Vance is promoting a conspiracy theory that Dutch immigrants have overrun the little town of Solvang, California. What are they eating? A) Endangered California condors, B) Trump Steaks or C) J.D. Vances lunch.(Laughing) Definitely C.Trump fangirl and conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer infamously predicted that the White House would smell like curry if Kamala Harris is elected president. What would the White House smell like if Trump were elected to a second term? A) Victory Cologne by President Trump, B) Rotting from the inside, or C) Fear and burning tires? (Laughing) Oh, God. A combination of B and C.The devil makes a deal with Donald Trump to drop all pending charges against him, but he has to leave the race for president and retire to Palm Springs, next door to you. Whats your reaction?I mean, Im glad hes not in the White House, but wed start looking for a new house. What are you looking forward to most if you win your race to represent the constituents of CA-41?Having the honor of saying that I serve them in Congress. You know, theres a big difference between campaigning and governing, and so far, Ive only experienced campaigning, and Im really looking forward to actually being able to do something to improve peoples lives. Itll make all of the dialing-for-dollars worth it.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Christian school head who bans gay students convicted of child abuse
A well-known MAGA pastor in Louisiana has been convicted of three felony counts of child abuse and a fourth for second-degree child cruelty.John Raymond, the founder of Lakeside Christian Academy in St. Tammany Parish, was accused of wrapping packing tape around the mouths and heads of three 13-year-old boys as punishment for talking in class. A distraught teacher at the academy removed the tape from the boys heads with scissors about 45 minutes after Raymond subjected them to the sadistic discipline in his private office. Related This dad beat up his 2-year-old son for acting gay. Hes going away for a long time. He told the judge his son preferred playing with Barbie dolls and kitchen sets to robots, cars, and soccer balls, so he punched him in the face. Raymond was convicted as well of placing his hand over the mouth of a four-year-old student until the child went limp. His Christian academy bans homosexuality. He was also the first contestant voted off the island on an early season of the reality TV show Survivor. Police arrested Raymond after receiving a complaint in March 2022 from the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services about potential child abuseat the Lakeside school, where they learned of the packing tape incident. The three victims reported they had trouble breathing and that the removal process was painful, police said.In a statement after his arrest, Raymond claimed hed offered the kids the option of using transparent tape instead or calling their parents and suspending them.No student was ever treated with cruelty or harmed in any way, he added. Two months later, Raymond was arrested a second time on the second-degree child cruelty charge.Police said Raymond held a four-year-old boyupside down by his ankles, whipping his buttocks, and in a separate incident covered his mouth and nose with his hand to stop a tantrum. Witnesses reported the punishment prevented the child from breathing to the point of him going limp. Afterward, the boy was unable to stand. In addition to the criminal charges stemming from those incidents, four parents sued Raymond over the abuse. That lawsuit detailed another episode of child cruelty at the school six years earlier when Raymond allegedly assaulted another child and caused serious bodily injury or neurological impairment. While he awaited trial, Raymond announced his second failed run for Louisiana state representative. I feel its important people who believe in conservative Christian principles hold positions to create laws to direct our state properly,Raymond said. Ive spent 23 years serving St. Tammany Parish in promoting Christian conservative values, andI feel compelled to run to bring those values into law.The convicted child abuser has testified in multiple hearings at the State House supporting bills requiring schools to post In God We Trust in classrooms, officially allow historical Bible courses to be taught in public schools, and for legislation rolling back LGBTQ+ rights. He faces up to 40 years in prison.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Outside of America, trying to make sense of Trump voters
BOOM! The cannon fired. The man next to me and I both jumped. My husband Brent and I are American expats who have lived outside of our home country for seven years. I was recently standing on the deck of a cruise ship, about to leave Portland, England, our latest port of call. On the dock below us, men in old-fashioned costumes were firing a ceremonial gun, sending our boat off with a bang.ShutterstockWed both been taking pictures of the cannon, but the man next to me held up his camera, which showed a blurry image. That scared me so bad I messed up my photo. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today I looked down at the image on my phone. Me too! We both laughed. The man was in his sixties white, tall, and slender. He wore jeans, a navy-blue fleece, and black, horn-rimmed glasses. He looked a bit dorky, but that was a good thing. I figured he and I might have a lot in common.Jacketless and shivering, I turned toward the cabin where Brent waited. But the man stopped me. Did you see the sail in this morning? No, was it interesting? I said.We went right past this pretty little lighthouse. It would make a great photo. I was hoping to get one on the way out.Should I try to get a photo too? I thought, torn. I was freezing, and Brent was waiting for me.Okay, I wasnt that torn. I never miss a chance to get a good photo. As we settled in with our respective cameras to wait for the lighthouse, the man said, Enjoying the cruise?I laughed. Well, the weather could be better. All that rain. And not getting into Edinburgh because of the fog was disappointing.Shutterstock So true. He held out his hand. Im Bob.Michael, I said, shaking his hand. How about you? What do you think of the cruise? We brought my grandsons eleven and thirteen. I wanted to spend time together before I lose them to their teenage years. And how has that gone?Surprisingly well! I smiled. Bob seemed like a decent guy.Where are you from? he asked.Seattle, I said. You?Pittsburgh, but we recently moved to Arizona.I lifted an eyebrow. Pennsylvania and Arizona both swing states in the election. Things must be crazy. So crazy.I usually try to avoid discussing politics with strangers especially with older, white men. I always worry theyll say something to upset me.But before I could change the subject, Bob shook his head. I cant believe I voted for that man. Twice.I tried to keep the look of surprise off of my face. Bob had voted for Trump twice? After the horror of his first term, Bob thought, Yes! I want more of this insanity and chaos!Brent and I are liberals, but we have a few Republican and right-leaning friends and acquaintances. But theyre all educated, and theyd been as disgusted by Donald Trump as we were. None had ever voted for him not that I know of anyway.Brent and I had often wondered about these Trump voters. How could almost half of the country support this racist, misogynistic man? Who were these people?Just the night before, Id overheard the conversation at the table next to us. All these immigrants come in, and the government gives them everything for free! a red-faced, older white man had thundered. That Harris woman wants more to come. Trump will keep America for Americans. That man had looked and sounded precisely like a Trump supporter was supposed to. But Bob didnt look like a Trump voter, not at all.Did you watch the debate? I asked. This was the day after Harris had destroyed Trump, and memes of him ranting about pets being eaten by immigrants had flooded the internet.I watched clips, he said. What a clown.A loose cannon, I thought, looking back toward the dock behind us.I never got his appeal, I said.I really hate the way things are in D.C., Bob explained. I thought he might change that, but now things are worse than ever. And the way he disrespects womenYoure just noticing this now? I thought. Twenty-eight women have accused him of sexual assault! But another part of me thought: This fellow lives in an important swing state. Maybe I can convince him to vote for Kamala. It was January sixth that finally did it for me, Bob said. I mean, attacking the Capitol?Right? I said. The MAGA folks wanted to hang Mike Pence. And for hours, Trump didnt even try to stop them. Now he calls the people who were arrested hostages and wants to pardon them all.Bob nodded. And that policeman who died.Do you think you might vote for Harris? I asked. Whatever her flaws, shed never do anything like that.Maybe. I havent decided.I nodded, but the truth was, I couldnt believe Bob was ambivalent. Couldnt he see the damage Trump had caused with his despicable lies about the stolen 2020 election? The former president now seemed more unhinged than ever and more racist. Even many members of his former administration were saying he was unfit to lead. Was America really going to collapse into quasi-fascism because the entire world briefly experienced high inflation in the years after COVID? I was so unbelievably tired of Donald Trump! His crudeness and cruelty, his barely veiled appeals to violence. And when a deranged lunatic tries to assassinate him, he doesnt tone down his rhetoric in the slightest but instead cynically tries to use the terror as a way to try to silence any criticism of him?I didnt understand how Kamala Harris could rise above it all, staying so dignified a light to Trumps darkness. She was like, well, the lighthouse that had finally appeared in the distance at the end of the harbor. We need more people like Liz Cheney, I said. She and I disagree on a lot of issues. But we agree on the most important things, which are the Constitution and the importance of our democracy. I genuinely admire her.Bob brightened. I do too. I smiled. Was I convincing him to vote for Harris? Then, he seemed to deflate a bit. Ive got family in Pennsylvania, and theyre all still such total Trumpsters. This made me deflate too. Even after all the lies and nonsense, Bobs family in Pennsylvania wasnt doubting Trump at all?It also made me angry. This wasnt normal politics policy differences, the kind of things you could agree to disagree on. Make America great again? Trump and his supporters seemed determined to destroy almost everything that did make America great.I remembered 2016 and the online fights Id gotten into with some old high school classmates who had turned into full-on MAGA-types. Things had gotten incredibly ugly, and fighting with them, Id quickly turned into a version of myself I didnt like. After Trump won, Id mostly tuned out politics, if only to preserve my sanity. When Biden won, I assumed that craziness was finally all behind us.But now here we were again, the country split almost in half, the two sides literally hating each other. And after nearly a decade of this horror show, the threat of violence was worse than ever.So where did that leave us? How did a country survive with a divide like that? There it is, said Bob, meaning the lighthouse. Didnt I say it was fantastic? But I barely glanced at the lighthouse. Instead, I looked at Bob.Yes, hed voted for Trump twice and wouldnt yet commit to voting for Kamala. That was hard for me to accept and even harder to understand. On the other hand, it didnt sound like hed vote for Trump again.More than that, Bob was clearly a good person. If I fell overboard then and there, I suspected hed grab a life ring and leap into the water right after me.What about the guy in the dining room the night before? Would he have jumped into the ocean to save me? If I knew who he was, would I have done the same for him?At some point, the hatred had to end. Didnt it? And at some point, we all needed to learn to coexist and get on with our lives.Bob lifted his camera. The lighthouse was approaching fast. Get ready! Here comes the lighthouse!I finally looked at it, and it was as pretty as Bob had said. It was standing there, guiding us to safety. All we had to do was follow its light.Shutterstock Michael Jensen is an author, editor, and one-half of Brent and Michael Are Going Places, a couple of traveling gay digital nomads.Subscribe to their free travel newsletter here.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Did Donald Trump just promise free IVF to gay couples?

The rights attack on trans rights is a useful dodge for its anti-abortion stand
Ever since the six right-wing justices on the Supreme Court ignored five decades of precedent to strike down Roe v. Wade, Republicans have been on the defensive. They have long called for the end of a womans right to choose, but once they had it, they found their wish was accompanied by severe electoral consequences. Every time a ballot initiative protecting abortion rights turns up on the ballot, it wins handily, even in deep red states like Kansas. The predicted GOP tsunami in the 2022 midterms fizzled, in large part because of the backlash to the Supreme Court ruling earlier that year. Related Abortion & trans rights are safe in Virginia as Democrats take control of the legislature Voters across the country have repeatedly shown that Democrats win when reproductive rights are on the ballot. So, if you are a MAGA candidate and youre looking for a way to seize the conversation again, what can you do? As it turns out, you can resort to the tried-and-true: attack transgender people. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today In one of the stranger twists of this election year, Republicans have been trying to make abortion into an issue about runaway transgender rights. They hope it will be a distraction from the losing issue of abortion. Trans rights arent nearly as popular as abortion rights, so they are trying to change the debate.Earlier this month, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) told a Cultural Impact Conference at a Baptist church that the Missouri ballot measure to protect abortion rights was really about health care for trans youth. This is about an effort to come into our schools behind your backs without your knowledge, to tell our kids that theres something wrong with them and to give them drugs that will sterilize them for life, to push them toward procedures that will fundamentally change their bodies irrevocably for life, Hawley lied. And there will be nothing we can do about it. This is a riff on Donald Trumps equally deranged rant that schools are performing surgery on trans youth. Hawley was repeating a lie that opponents of a pro-choice ballot measure in Ohio last year tried to use. Anti-abortion activists insisted that the ballot measure would also allow trans youth to get health care without parental consent. (It wouldnt.) Advocating for abortion goes hand-in-hand with advocation for gender-affirming care, an ad opposing the measure insisted. Similar ads ran in Wisconsin and Michigan. In every case, the argument wasnt just a lie. It was also a flop. The ballot measures passed overwhelmingly in all three states last year. Given how easy it is to show that the two issues arent directly connected, it may seem weird that Republicans keep linking them. One explanation is pretty simple: candidates have learned that the abortion bans are very unpopular, so they try not to talk about them at all. (They keep failing.) The other explanation is more complicated. In fact, for the right wing, abortion rights and the rights of trans youth are very closely linked. They depend upon restrictions of bodily autonomy. Simply put, the right doesnt believe that people have the right to make their own decisions about their body. For youth, they believe that parents have the absolute right to control a childs decisions, to the point of ignoring what is best for the child. They dont mind parents stopping trans youth from getting the health care they need. The right decides, and everyone else abides. If you look at the criminal penalties attached to restrictions on abortion and trans health care, you can see the similarities. In both cases, stopping health care isnt enough. Providers have to be punished if they provide it. Project 2025, the handbook the right developed for a second Trump administration, lumps reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and gender equality as equal evils. The next conservative president must make the institutions of American civil society hard targets, the document states. This starts with deleting the terms sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI), diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), gender, gender equality, gender equity, gender awareness, gender-sensitive, abortion, reproductive health, reproductive rights, and any other term used to deprive Americans of their First Amendment rights out of every federal rule, agency regulation, contract, grant, regulation, and piece of legislation. In a sense, conservatives are correct that all these the issues are linked, not just in their fevered imagination. Reproductive rights and trans rights (indeed, all LGBTQ+ rights) rest on the same legal grounds. Its not by accident that Justice Clarence Thomas suggested after the repeal of Roe that marriage equality should be next. The concept of a right to privacy, the right to make personal decisions about ones one body, is anathema to the right. The right, particularly the religious right, is not made up of single-issue voters. They arent just targetting abortion. They are looking to reconfigure society so that it resembles a kind of retro Christian paradise. Trans youth are emblematic of the type of modern society they want to eliminate. Abortion is another. To them, its all part of the same problem. Of course, to outsiders, it looks like a desperate attempt to change the conversation away from abortion. And in a way it is. But if the issue is really about policing sexuality and gender roles, its all part of the same conversation. Trans youth are just shorthand for everything thats they think is wrong with the country. The fact that they are harming children never enters their minds. They believe that they know best. We just have to hope that the majority of voters know better. How are you planning to vote this year?
How are you planning to vote in this coming election? Were down to the last month before Election Day, and now is the time to be thinking about your plan for voting. Voting can be a confusing process depending on where you live, and rules vary by state and even municipality.Research has shown that people who think through how theyre going to vote in advance of Election Day are more likely to turn out. A 2010 study found that people in Pennsylvania who were asked to create a plan before the election were more likely to actually vote than similar voters who werent asked to make a plan.Last week, Donald Trump called voting stupid stuff at a rally in Indiana, but getting your vote in early could be the most convenient way to do it. And at that same rally, Trump even encouraged his voters to go out, make a plan to vote early, vote absentee or vote in-person on election day.So wed like to know (very vaguely) how youre doing it this year. Donald Trump https://t.co/BugavRgfDl Chasten Glezman Buttigieg (@Chasten) September 26, 2024A tape of Trumps infamous quote leaked to the press in October 2016, just two days before Trumps presidential debate with Hillary Clinton. In response, numerous congressional Republicans withdrew their support of Trumps candidacy and condemned his comments. Hitting on married women? Condoning assault? Such vile degradations demean our wives and daughters and corrupt Americas face to the world, former Massachusetts Gov. and not-yet-Sen. Mitt Romney said.Eventually, Trump himself responded to the backlash, saying that he would not drop out of the presidential race, stating, This was locker room banter, a private conversation that took place many years ago. [Former President] Bill Clinton has said far worse to me on the golf course not even close. I apologize if anyone was offended. While Trump went on to win the 2016 election, at least 26 women have publicly accused him of rape, sexual assault, or sexual misconduct. Though Trump has denied all of the allegations, in May 2023, he was found liable for sexual abuse against E. Jean Carroll, a writer who accused Trump of raping her in a Bergdorf Goodman fitting room around 1996. A jury ordered Trump to pay her $5 million for the assault, but he said he would appeal the decision. This isnt the first time that Buttigieg has mocked Vance for his comments on the campaign trail. In September, Vance suggested that American families struggling with childcare costs should simply ask grandparents, aunts, and uncles to help raise their kids. In response, Buttigieg replied, Ask grandma to watch them for free is not policy.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Chappell Roan created a secret horror soundtrack you can hear just in time for Halloween
Before skyrocketing to worldwide fame, queer pop star Chappell Roan created her first and only film score to date!Back in 2022, the Pink Pony Club singer composed a hauntingly beautiful score for the indie horror short Posies, about people who begin to devolve into masters and one womans attempt to hide her transformation by placing flowers under her skin, according to the official synopsis. While Roan is best known for hit songs like Red Wine Supernova and Femininonenon, and her enduring love of drag culture, it turns out shes a horror girlie, too!Although the movie first premiered two years ago, it is being rereleased by the popular horror platform ALTER on October 10, just in time for spooky season! The original score may have been a well-kept secret until now, but Roan didnt just write the original score; she sings too, and her song Bitter also appears in the film.Posies star Anna Diop (Us, Nanny) and Andy Favreau (Little Fires Everywhere), and was directed by Katherine Fisher and Rachel Stavis, who also wrote the script. Stavis is also a horror novelist and a world-renowned, non-denominational exorcist who works with rock stars and Oscar winners and is on a mission to create global change by eradicating darkness from one person or place at a time, the films press release states. We cant wait to get our greedy eyeballs and ears on this short film!Posies will be available on ALTER on October 10, 2024. Gays are sharing their twink to twunk evolutions are we're SWEATING
Twink death or twunk evolution? From pop singer Troye Sivan to Heartstopper star Joe Locke, twinks are everywhere these days! But the term twink death is also in the zeitgeist, and people on X (formerly Twitter) are posting pictures of celebs (and themselves) evolving from twink to twunk, and the results are hot, hot, hot! Twink is a slang term referring to a gay man in his late teens to early twenties who is thin, hairless, and with more effeminate features, while a twunk is basically a muscular twink. There have long been jokes about twink death, when a young gay man ages out of being considered a twink or starts bulking up and evolves in a twunk instead. In the before and after pictures people posted on X, some people were jokingly mourning the loss of a twink when he became a twunk, while others were celebrating how hot both versions are were in the later camp!Earlier this week, V from the Korean boy band BTS posted a photo showing off his new muscular arms, prompting people to post a before and after shots of him, calling it twink death. Then other people posted photos of their own physical transformation for twink to twunk, and pictures of celebrities like Oscar Isaac and James McAvoy who arent gay and so cant technically be considered a twink. Even Drag Race royalty Bob the Drag Queen got in on the action, posting a photo of herself when she was in her twink era and wearing nothing but underwear and then a later picture of a more mature Bob with facial hair and muscle. Whether you're into twinks, subscribe to the belief that twink death exists, or are hot for muscular twunks, youre going to love these pics! (@) Bob the Drag Queen managing to look hot in both photos! (@) While there are rumors that V fro BTS is gay, he's never said anything about his sexuality. But these photos are a compelling case for him going from twink to twunk even if he's straight as an arrow! (@) Definite twink vibes! (@) Again, Oscar Issac can't technically be a twink or twunk because he's not gay, but either way, these pics are steamy! (@) He may be part of Straight Land, but these photos of young James McAvoy vs. older James McAvoy definitely fit the bill! (@) Korean singer and actor Ren who was formerly in the Korean boy ban NU'EST showing off his muscles have fans crying that this is twink death. Listen, some fans may be sad, but we'll never turn down photos of a man in short shorts. (@) These are photos of anti-LBTQ+ British journalist and commentator Tom Hardwood who probably wouldn't appreciate being called a twink, which is all the more reason to do it! (@) Former boy band singer Wonho has gone through a huge transformation that includes bulging biceps. Whether he's thin or ripped, we're on board! (@) Ok, this is just funny! (@) We love a gay man who can poke fun at himself! (@) We can't stop laughing at Alice's transformation throughout the Twilight series being likened to twink death! (@) There seems to be a Korean boy band to twunk pipeline! (@) We agree! (@) The twink death memes are too funny!

Bowen Yang shuts down claims that he 'mocked' Chappell Roan on 'SNL'
On Saturday, September 29, Saturday Night Live kicked off its historic 50th season with a jam-packed episode hosted by Jean Smart and that featured performances by musical guest Jelly Roll. One of the moments that stood out the most came from Bowen Yang, who played a character named "Moo Deng the hippo" in a scene for the Weekend Update segment of the show. There's no debate that this Moo Deng character was drawing parallels with and making direct references to Chappell Roan's recent struggles with fame, which include parasocial relationships with fans and the pressure to publicly state her political stances. But there is, apparently, some debate over whether or not Yang and SNL were "mocking" Roan through this character.Variety published a story titled "'SNL' Mocks Chappell Roan as Bowen Yang's Moo Deng Takes On Crazy Fans," which outlined all of Moo Deng's references to Roan's career. And while those references are, indeed, all about Roan, the article doesn't deliver the promise of the premise: in what way did Yang "mock" Roan with this performance? An equally confused Yang reacted to the article via Instagram story:"Oh geez. 'Mocks'??? If my personal stance and the piece aren't absolutely clear in terms of supporting her, then there it is, I guess. Everything she has ever asked for has been reasonable, and even then, we can connect it to another story about boundaries or whatever. Needing the hose [right now]."If you're familiar with Yang's work, personal life, and general disposition while doing interviews or cohosting the Las Culturistas podcast with Matt Rogers, it's pretty hard to make sense of this conclusion that the SNL star would be doing a scene intended to "mock" Roan. Quite the opposite, actually! Before we dive into the reasons why this claim of "mockery" feels odd, it's worth recapping how this scene actually went. Feel free to skip ahead to the next section if you're already seen it but if you haven't, it's absolutely worth watching (and paying attention to) it.What happened during Bowen Yang's Moo Deng scene on 'Saturday Night Live'?Yang's Moo Deng scene took place in the Weekend Update segment of Saturday Night Live, which has maintained co-anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che for season 50."This summer, a two-month-old pygmy hippo in Thailand named Moo Deng became a viral sensation, causing huge crowds at her zoo enclosure," Jost announced, "with some unruly fans throwing bananas and shellfish at her to get her attention. Here to comment is Moo Deng."After Yang enters the frame dressed as Moo Deng (she/her), the character tells the SNL audience to "stop clapping" (in a very unserious way) and asks Jost, "Is it OK if I say something?" The Weekend Update anchor tells Moo Deng to go ahead, and she does:"For the past 10 weeks, I've been going nonstop running around, eating lettuce, trying to bite the water from a hose, and the response has been overwhelming. But it has come to the point where I need to set some boundaries."Moo Deng goes on, "Reminder: women owe you nothing. When I'm in my enclosure, tripping over stuff, biting my trainer's knee I am at work. That is the project. Do not yell my name or expect a photo just because I'm your 'parasocial bestie,' or because you appreciate my talent."Jost asks, "Your talent what is your talent?""Having a slippery body that bounces," Moo Deng replies. "Before me, the only hippos in media were either 'hungry, hungry' or Jada Pinkett Smith in Madagascar. But now I'm your favorite hippo's favorite hippo. And I'm thirsty, thirsty. Hose!" she yells."Sorry, I needed that," Moo Deng says after regaining composure. Jost points out how stressful it must be to have the whole world watching her every move. Moo Deng agrees, "Honestly, Colin, sometimes I feel like I live my life in a cage, you know? Like an animal, trapped in a zoo, for people to look at."Nearly all pop stars have used the surveillance-pilled motif at one point in their careers, like Britney Spears in Blackout, Taylor Swift in Reputation, and Lady Gaga in The Fame Monster. But given that Moo Deng is a hippopotamus who lives at the zoo, Jost points out to her that "that's kind of what you are" in the most literal sense."No, Colin, I have a career, OK?" Moo Deng claps back. "I've been approached by brands [like] Maybelline, Away Luggage but I will only stand behind products that I believe in, like sweet potatoes and hose water. Hose!" she yells again, and is again hosed down by water. She continues, "And trust me, I know I would not be in this position without my fans, my community, my Moo Deng boo thangs, my mujahideen but the harassment has been intolerable." As shellfish and bananas start getting thrown in Moo Deng's direction, she screams in response, prompting Jost to yell that person to leave Moo Deng alone. She replies, "Wow, thank you so much, Colin. Your voice got so loud; that was so, so brave of you."Jost highlights that Moo Deng's life "sounds a lot like Chappell Roan's lately" and asks the hippo if she knows who that is."I'm 10 weeks old, Colin, of course I know Chappell Roan," Moo Deng replies. "And, by the way, leave her alone. Let her take as much time as she needs for her mental health. We both deserve patience and grace so stop harassing her, and stop throwing shellfish at her."She adds, "This is what society does: it puts young women on pedestals only to knock them down with shellfish. And also, I know I'm only 10 weeks old, but this is very important to me, so please listen: I will not be making an endorsement in this year's election.""The presidential election, really?" Jost asks. Moo Deng responds, "Oh, I'm getting stressed out again! Colin, can I bite your knee?"After Jost declines her request, Moo Deng says:"Fine. See how easy that was, to respect people's boundaries?"See on InstagramThe scene ends with another water-hosing moment, but those last few lines delivered by Yang still resonate as the actual point of the scene: it can seem a bit silly and cringey when pop stars who grow up in the public eye have certain emotional outbursts and feel the need to assert themselves as human beings but it's even cringier to put this much emphasis on the political endorsement of a 10-month-old hippo, or a 26-year-old singer whose politics are extremely clear in every song, performance, statement, interview, and social media post. This same episode also features a sketch of Yang impersonating Charli XCX, which is centered around the 32-year-old British singer sharing an X post that reads, "Kamala is brat." The sketch is just as funny and silly as Yang's scene playing Moo Deng, but the comedian is not literally "mocking" either of these women whatsoever. What has Bowen Yang said about Chappell Roan in the past? The Las Culturistas podcast cohosted by Yang and Rogers, on a base level, is very supportive of female singers. Long before the average person knew who Roan was, Rogers and Yang were already singing her praises, like during an episode titled "Sunday Morning Talk" from April 2023. In a recent episode, "An Attack on Leos," from August 2024, Yang and Rogers had a long discussion about their support for Roan's plea for privacy. Also recently, the cohosts disclosed that one of the few times they fought with each other was hilariously associated with their very passionate feelings for Roan.In June 2024, Vulture reported that Roan's The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess had won Album of the Year for two consecutive years at the Las Culturistas Culture Awards a hilariously chaotic and deeply subjective award show that spun out of the Las Culturistas podcast. What do we know about Bowen Yang's feelings toward Chappell Roan?See on InstagramWhile it is often unclear how a comedian actually feels about a celebrity who ends up being referenced in a joke, it couldn't be more ironic that Yang literally has a long, well-documented digital footprint illustrating how much he loves and supports Chappell Roan.Yang interviewed Roan for Interview Magazine as recently as August 2024, where he was literally described as a big fan of hers. That much was evidenced even more by their entire exchange, with Yang noting that Roan's vinyl record is displayed "front and center" in his living room, saying that he couldn't wait for her to be a musical guest on Saturday Night Live (which is now officially happening in November), and showing empathy toward Roan's struggles with fame. Why does it feel so weird to accuse Bowen Yang of mocking Chappell Roan on SNL?In case you missed it: Yang himself took a career break in July 2023 due to mental health issues. The comedian and podcaster announced that hiatus via an Instagram story that read:"Taking a very short break from [Las Culturistas]. Bad bouts of depersonalization are f*cking me up bad, but I am doing my best to get better! Please take care, be soon."One could argue that Yang's struggles with his career and fame, as well as his personal experiences with depersonalization, are totally unrelated to Roan's issues. That person could argue that this feels like a stretch and, well, sure!On the other hand, there's a very long list of Yang expressing his adoration and support for Roan in comparison to one moment on Saturday Night Live where he played a character that perhaps could be misinterpreted as "mocking" the singer. If we're really forced to reach a conclusion about Yang's feelings for Roan one that feels plausible after looking at the comedian's past statements and his own mental health concerns there's just a lot more evidence that Yang wholeheartedly feels for Roan and sympathizes with her, and not much else to back up the conclusion that he just decided to make up a character with the literal intention of mocking Roan on the season 50 premiere of SNL, despite being a huge fan of hers and knowing that she was already booked to perform on the show in two months.New episodes of Saturday Night Live air Saturdays on NBC and are available for streaming on Peacock.

This rightwing activist gets major brands to turn their backs on diversity. How is he doing it?
Robby Starbuck, the former music video director behind clips like Super Collider for Megadeth, has a new job: hectoring companies to drop their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs and cut their ties to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and the organizations Corporate Equality Index (CEI). But Starbucks successes may hint that these companies were never actually invested in DEI to begin with. This summer, he convinced Harley-Davidson, Jack Daniels parent company Brown-Forman, Ford Motor Co., Lowes, Tractor Supply Co., John Deere, and most recently large-equipment manufacturer Caterpillar Inc. Starbuck calls these corporate decisions a massive win for sanity. Related HRC President Kelley Robinson calls rightwing activist a Republican reject after Ford drops CEI Ford is the latest brand to scale back its DEI initiatives and connection to HRC after being targeted by Robby Starbuck. All this is framed as Starbuck fighting for corporate neutrality. Our campaigns are so effective that were getting some of the biggest corporations on earth to change their policies without me even posting a video first just from the fear they have of being the next company we expose. The landscape of corporate America is quickly shifting to sanity and neutrality. We are the trend now, not the anomaly, Starbuck wrote. Today theyre making preemptive changes. Some highlights: No more woke trainings. No donations to divisive events. They pic.twitter.com/rNh6b8Zcvw Robby Starbuck (@robbystarbuck) September 19, 2024Based on these successes, one might expect Starbuck to be a veteran organizer like his fellow conservative activist Christopher Rufo, who has been a far-right figure since at least 2017. Rufo is perhaps most known for the ousting of Harvard University President Claudine Gay and for making critical race theory a bugbear of the right. But surprisingly, Starbuck is relatively new to the scene. When it comes to followers on X (formerly Twitter), hes got fewer than 630,000. Comparatively, LibsOfTikTok has 3.5 million, Project Veritas founder James OKeefe has 2.6 million, and Rufo has 700,000. And yet, these big brands are following his lead.Hes been openly Republican for the last decade on social media but has only been politically active for the last four years. Though he made a failed run for Congress in Tennessee, it was his anti-LGBTQ+ activism that launched him into the right-wing spotlight in 2023. He accused actress Megan Fox of child abuse after seeing a photo of her eldest son, Noah, wearing a pink shirt. He also claimed Fox was forcing her children to wear girls clothes in another tweet, according to The Independent.Fox criticized Starbuck, saying he was exploiting my childs gender identity to gain attention in your political campaign has put you on the wrong side of the universe, in a now-deleted Instagram post. The attention Starbuck got from going after Fox may have been what ultimately laid out his path. This year, he directed the documentary The War on Children, which parrots right-wing conspiracies that the LGBTQ+ community is trying to sexualize children. The documentary premiered in February on X, where it was promoted by Elon Musk, who has his own issues with transphobia. A few months after his film came out, Starbuck started his war on DEI, and in particular, the HRC and the CEI. The CEI is a massive index of nearly 1,400 companiesincluding three-quarters of the Fortune 500 list of largest businesses. HRC has been compiling surveys for the CEI since 2002 and rates companies based on four main metrics: nondiscrimination policies, benefits for LGBTQ+ workers, corporate culture, and social responsibility. Companies receive a score out of 100 points, and as of the last report, 545 companies have a perfect score. While DEI initiatives attempt to create inclusive environments for people of all races, sexual orientations, and genders, a recent analysis by LGBTQ+ employee advocate Drew Keller found that only 9% of Starbucks DEI-related posts are about racial diversity, with the rest directed at the LGBTQ+ community, according to USA Today. This is not just a broadside against DEI, Keller told the newspaper. Its really a targeted campaign against LGBTQ inclusion. In a long post to X this month, Starbuck laid out his grievances against HRC in particular. He slammed HRC for calling former President Donald Trump a white nationalist and claimed the organization is work[ing] to legalize child sex changes and men in girls locker rooms. This group, the HRC, fuels the wokeness in Corporate America via their CEI scoring system where companies bend over backwards to get a 100% score. Many even hire a special health care concierge for LGBTQ employees and fund transitions for children of employees in order to get their 100% CEI score, Starbuck wrote. To get their 100% score, they essentially have to worship at the altar of left wing policy. Over the coming months, with the help of some great whistleblowers, we will expose every element of these disgusting practices. Now is the time to name and shame every single company who associates with this open hatred of conservative consumers. Its time to expose the @HRC. This is a must see video. Did you know that most major companies work with a group that calls Trump a "White nationalist" who "hates America" and many give this group MILLIONS as they work to legalize child sex changes and men in girls locker rooms? pic.twitter.com/2kz4fj9foM Robby Starbuck (@robbystarbuck) September 12, 2024 Its not surprising that Starbuck got a number of things wrong in his description of the CEI. While he describes companies as having to bend over backwards to get a 100 point rating, 545 out of 1,386 companies in the latest report, or nearly 40%, have that honor. Most of the CEIs criterialike having non-discrimination policies or offering the same benefits to employees with same-sex partnersare basic requirements which should be met by most companies regardless of DEI policies. When it comes to the companies singled out by Starbuck, all have lost 25 points for responsible citizenship, which is defined as a a large-scale official or public anti-LGBTQ+ blemish on their recent records. In this case, HRC confirmed its due to the Starbuck-inspired DEI-dumping. Ford, Lowes, Molson Coors, and Brown-Forman would otherwise have a perfect score, but are now at 75 points. John Deere is at 70, losing an additional 5 points for not having an LGBTQ+ benefits guide. Tractor Supply Company is also at 70, losing five points for not having a LGBTQ+ non-discrimination policy for suppliers and guidelines for inclusive giving.Harley-Davidson has the lowest CEI score of these companies, at 20. The motorcycle company has a few pro-LGBTQ+ benefits, including a non-discrimination policy, equal health coverage for transgender employees, an LGBTQ+ resource group for employees, and a supplier non-discrimination policy. However, it loses out on all other subcriteria.Eric Bloem, the Human Rights Campaign Foundations vice president of programs and corporate advocacy, told LGBTQ Nation it was not surprising that Starbuck would go after the CEI. Last year, for the first time, HRC issued our first state of emergency. We did so in response to the record-breaking legislative attacks that were being lobbed at the LGBTQ+ community, so certainly we understand that there are extremists at work here seeking to undermine the work that weve been able to do to achieve greater equality. And for the last 20 plus years, businesses have been at the forefront in helping us achieve that greater level of equality, Bloem said. The question remains: why are companies seemingly inclined to listen to Starbuck? Starbuck himself told the Financial Times that he thinks its because hes a strong communicator. When I talk about somebody being afraid to say anything about how they feel at work because theyre afraid theyre going to lose their job, that connects with somebody a hell of a lot more than a shareholder proposal does, he told the outlet. Dr. M.K. Chin, an associate professor and Jerome Bess Faculty Fellow at Indiana Universitys Kelley School of Business, told LGBTQ Nation that a companys political decisions are usually a combination of the CEO or C-suites personal beliefs and values, the values of the companys employees and outside forces. The biggest factor is not the CEO or management teams personal beliefs. Its the degree to which their personal beliefs align with employees. So thats when the companys voice is most strong, he said. But outside pressure can have stronger influence when neither the executives nor employees have strong beliefs around an issue. Making the connection to the recent phenomenon around John Deere, Jack Daniels, and these other cases, theres a very good chance that their driving force was not from the CEOs or employees. Their decision to engage in the DEI policies, I think theres a good chance that its mostly driven by external factors. They might have considered it like checking off boxes. Weve got to do this, this is expected, Chin said.So I have to assume that theres probably been either no consensus or weak consensus for DEI policies in the boardroom, management teams or CEOs personally at the beginning. And if that is the case, these threats might look more salient, he added. If you have strong beliefs in these values and these policies, you wont be swayed by a few tweeters and influencers.Chin also suggested that these decisions may be hastily made, citing the Tractor Supply Company. That company said they were dropping DEI policies to ensure our activities and giving tie directly to our business. A few days later, the Black Farmers Association announced a boycott, because they perceived that as like an attack on them, Chin said. So I think there could be a lot of different types of backlash the companies might not have expected.Bloem points out that fighting DEI initiatives is a losing battle, as the number of people who identify as LGBTQ+ is growing, with 26% of Gen Z identifying as something other than straight. In addition, a recent Washington Post-Ipsos poll showed that most Americans agree with DEI initiatives. What that means is that a companys future employees, their future customers are increasingly LGBTQ+. And so if they are going to be able to recruit the best talent, if theyre going to be able to count on their support when they purchase their products and services, theyre going to have to have to make sure that they have done the hard work in demonstrating their allyship to the LGBTQ+ community, Bloem said. Chin agreed, pointing out the differences between older generations, like Boomers and Gen X, and younger ones, like Millennials or Gen Z.Millennials tend to prefer companies to stand up, and they expecteven requireCEOs to speak up on these socio-political issues, he said. Millennials are becoming more of a center of this economy. Theyre becoming more important customers with greater disposable income. Boomers are retiring or retired. Generation Xers are getting into their 50s and 60s. Considering this trend in demographics, pulling back from this initiative could have a long-term impact.Attracting and retaining human capital might have a bigger impact. They are customers, but theyre also employees. And a good amount of research shows millennial employees tend to prioritize the importance of purpose and values at the workplace. So if dumping these DEI initiatives is perceived as were not treating everyone as whole, that could hurt in terms of attracting and retaining higher-quality human capital, Chin added.LGBTQ Nation reached out to Starbuck, Harley-Davidson, Jack Daniels, John Deere, Tractor Supply Co., and Lowes for comment but did not hear back. Ford declined LGBTQ Nations request for comment.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Senator Scott Wiener served a sexy leather daddy look at Folsom Street Fair AGAIN
California Senator Scott Wiener has represented the states District 11, which includes San Francisco, since 2016. He has been a voice for LGBTQ+ rights, better access to healthcare, and addressing climate change head-on. Just this year alone, hes authored 12 bills Governor Gavin Newsom has gone on to sign, including ones focused on worker and HIV protections. So yes, we love him. (@) Oh, and hes also a leather daddy with a bit of a kinky side.Or, rather, thats at least what we assume based on his continued attendance to San Francisco's Folsom Street Fair.Like last year, he posted a photo of himself at the event and captioned the photo, Going all Senatorial at Folsom. The picture, posted on his X, formerly Twitter, account, shows him shirtless with a black tie and soaking up the San Francisco sun. (@) For those unfamiliar with the Folsom Street Fair, its an annual event similar to Pride where people come to explore their leather/kink/alternative sex practices that may otherwise be considered taboo. Their website says to come in all your gear or none at all as we take the streets with our deliciously weird and wonderful flair!Naturally, as with his previous presence at the event, Wieners photo had a highly mixed response, with the bulk of the critics coming from concerned Conservatives who are clutching their pearls over a grown, consenting adult attending an adult event all about consent. (@) Ah, being totally misunderstood.Of course, a lot of the hatred for him -- and judging by the comments under his photo, we mean a lot -- is based on the misconception that Bill 145, which Wiener authored, decriminalizes pedophilia, which it does not. Considering San Francisco is part of the district Wiener represents, it shouldn't be a surprise that he would attend the event, which draws in thousands of visitors every year. And in case you're wondering -- just because things do happen at Folsom that involve various kinks you may or may not understand, that also doesn't mean everyone does everything, so it's wrong to assume what Wiener does during his time.Regardless of the Conservative complaints about his attendance there, others think it's great to have governmental figures at events like these because it helps further promote equality, which is a main avenue of focus for Wiener. Maybe people are just bothered because he's showing a little more skin this year than he did last year, when he wore a thin leather vest that largely covered his chest, as opposed to the tiny tie that showed off more of his chiseled body.See on InstagramConservatives will always find something to complain about, but there will always be people backing for more equality at all times, too.Remember to vote on November 5 and keep scrolling for more reactions to his photo. JD Vance says kids cant do math because schools are gender-inclusive
Donald Trumps vice-presidential pick, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), has blamed transgender inclusion for Americas declining schools.Ahead of the Ohio senators highly anticipated debate with Democratic VP nominee Tim Walz on Tuesday, Vance test-drove his trans line of attack on Saturday on stage with Lance Wallau, a notorious anti-LGBTQ+ hate pastor currently on a stealth Trump campaign revival tour. Related MAGA preacher says witchcraft caused Trumps debate disaster Lance Wallau is calling for a supernatural solution to the former presidents poor debate skills. Creeping socialism and 87 different genders are poisoning in the minds of our kids, Vance claimed in a trademark ramble in answer to a question from Wallnau, a Christian nationalist conspiracy theorist. Subscribe to our Newsletter today First of all, Vance said, the American education system used to be the envy of the world, rich or poor alike. We believe in this country that every person deserves a quality education.Well, now weve got American children who cant add five plus five, but they can tell you that there are 87 different genders, the one-time venture capitalist claimed. And I think both of those things are related. J.D. Vance, making the case for cutting off funding to radical public schools: Now weve got American children that cant add 5+5, but they can tell you there are 87 different genders.Has anyone ever met a student for whom this is true? pic.twitter.com/i9GkGcL4OL Mike Hixenbaugh (@Mike_Hixenbaugh) September 29, 2024According to Vance, American schools funded by taxpayer dollars are now akin to Communist reeducation camps brainwashing our children with radical ideas. This picture paints teachers like Walz, a former coach and social studies teacher in Minnesota public schools, as radical purveyors of Godless socialist ideology and a threat to Americas Christian heritage.Because were teaching kids radical ideas, Vance continued, were not teaching them the basics. Were not teaching them reading, writing, arithmetic, the things that every child needs in order to live a good life. And that is to your point, Vance told Wallnau, this creeping socialism in our schools. Weve got to get it out of there, and I think we cut off the money. Stop spending your tax dollars on radical organizations that are poisoning the minds of our kids.Trump and Project 2025 the authoritarian blueprint for a second Trump presidency drafted by the right-wing Heritage Foundation advocate dismantling the Department of Education. The former president declared in February, We will force schools to adopt school prayer which Project 2025 also suggests. Vance appeared at the event just miles from Butler, PA (where Trump was shot in the ear over the summer) as a guest on Wallnaus Courage Tour, a Trump campaign proxy in the guise of an old-time religion revival tour. Wallnau was a key player on the ground in mobilizing Christian nationalist support and bodies for the January 6th insurrection. His Courage Tour has been supplied with swing state voter data by Trump-aligned America First Legal, run by Trump administration propagandist Stephen Miller.Wallnau is known for popularizing the Seven Mountain Mandate that asserts conservative Christians are called on to rule the world.Following Trumps debate with Kamala Harris earlier this month, Wallnau said he witnessed occult-empowered deception, manipulation and domination, over the airwaves at the event. Thats what ABC pulled off as moderators, and Kamalas script handlers set up the kill box, he said. Wallnau called it witchcraft. After a so-called demonic Harris secured support for the Democratic nomination in August, Wallnau predicted shed pick U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg as her running mate to stoke national division over racism and perversion.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Rene Rapp & Towa Bird share a kiss while performing at All Things Go Fest and we're SCREAMING
The sold out New York leg of the All Things Go music festival was filled to the absolute brim with celebratory sapphic moments! Chappell Roan may have been absent, after a brave and commendable choice to step away from her scheduled performance slot and take care of her own mental health, but there are still plenty of other incredible queer performers taking the stage, including MUNA, Janelle Mone, Rene Rapp, and Towa Bird just to name a few!It would seem that these artists must have met backstage before their respective sets and made a bet to continually one up each other in just how gay their performances could get.MUNA performed a cover of Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles". Sorry, they previewed their totally original new hit single that they wrote impromptu onstage, and which sounds NOTHING like the iconic Vanessa Carlton hit "A Thousand Miles", my mistake. Upon hearing this new song for the very first time, the whole crowd went understandably wild. to witness a performer telepathically communicate a song to their band mates and the entire audience is a level of artistry that has left me near speechless. Let's go lesbians indeed!@allthingsgofestivalI cant believe this is the first time Im hearing this #muna #athousandmiles #coversong #atgdc #allthingsgoUpping the ante, Janelle Mone performed "PYNK" in the iconic vulvar ensemble, a big, pink labia headpiece to match their even bigger and pinker pants, from Dirty Computer, the film and visual companion to Mone's album of the same name. Mone also made the universal sign for cunnilingus as they sang the line, "It's my favorite part," to uproarious approval from the crowd. @allthingsgofestivaljanelle the icon you ARE #allthingsgo #janellemonaeFinally, Rene Rapp and Towa Bird went all in, not just performing together, but sharing a kiss on stage. Rapp was joined by Bird, who was playing her own set at All Things Go fest. Bird is a gifted guitarist, which is one of the hottest and dykiest things anyone can do, and one upped on the Hot & Dykey Scale only by using your sexy guitar playing skills to perform with your girlfriend. Rapp and Bird are really out here running a masterclass on hot lesbian activities. It was during Rapp's performance of "Tummy Hurts" that Bird, while still shredding, knelt in front of Rapp, who joined her on the ground. They embraced each other, Rapp still singing and Bird mouthing along to the lyrics. Then, right before standing, the two share a chaste kiss. It may have just been a quick, tender, "blink and you'll miss it" kiss, but it meant a lot to those looking for more out and proud lesbians to be celebrated on a stage such as this.@allthingsgofestivalReplying to @DonLemonOfficial we gotchu #reneerapp #towabird #allthingsgo #atg

Ellens former employees blast her delusional Netflix special
Former employees at The Ellen DeGeneres Show say the comedians new stand-up special on Netflix is a case study in evasion and self-deception.From the beginning of the show, which opens with a montage of DeGeneres comedy history, the former talk show host is delusional, they say. Related Ellen says she should have signed off her show by saying Go f**k yourselves She says she was kicked out of show business in her newest Netflix special. The one-time sitcom star, who pulled the plug on her daytime chat show in 2020 after allegations of staff abuse, has said repeatedly including at the top of her Netflix special that she was kicked out of show business twice: once for coming out as gay on her primetime ABC show, and once for being mean. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Former talk show staffers told Rolling Stone the claim is ironic. She made millions of dollars doing a Netflix special talking about how she got canceled, but by nature of making millions of dollars to do a Netflix special, you were not silenced, one former staffer says. You were not kicked out of Hollywood. Most people cant get Netflix specials. One former employee went on to say they admired DeGeneres for years before working for her, which is why witnessing her behavior behind the scenes was so disappointing. Ellen displayed the same kind of self-justifying deception at work as she did on stage in the special, they said. While DeGeneres may have a point that Hollywood was cruel and discriminatory to her, they said, she still fostered an unwelcoming environment behind the scenes of her show. Both things can be true at once, the former staffer said.Even if [her cancellation] was because she was mean, that is something that she has done to other people, whereas being gay is about her being judged, and its interesting that she cant see it outside of the lens of herself, the employee said.It only exists as either its happening to me because I am a strong woman or its happening to me because I am gay, they added. Its impossible that these are the consequences for my actions. That doesnt even come into her brain that these are consequences. According to another actor in DeGeneres cancelation drama, one mischaracterization occurs right at the top of her show in that video montage, which displays a misdated screenshot of a call for stories about Ellen being mean that the comedian says helped lead to her downfall. In March 2020, podcast host Kevin Porter solicited backstage gossip about the host with a promise to match the items with donations to the LA Food Bank as the COVID pandemic was just starting. Porter called his tweet quite lightweight and just juicy gossip, but it became a scapegoat for the negative attention. It was a pretty masterful reframing and dodge of everything.Staff members were particularly appalled by DeGeneres seeking sympathy for the toll she says the talk show allegations took on her mental health. A former writer on The Ellen DeGeneres Show used the example of her penchant for pranks that would intentionally frighten staffers, among them a years-long tag game in her fun and carefree work environment. It is true that she scared people, but thats not always a comfortable workplace to be in where youre on edge that at some point someones going to jump out of your closet and its the person that youre most scared of. I would have nightmares for years after that she would be chasing me, and I wasnt even involved in that tag game.Literally, the sight of her gives me a trauma response, said one staffer.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Judge rules straight, cis principal cant be the victim of anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination
A federal judge ruled last Wednesday that the principal of a Minnesota school district is not protected from alleged retaliation due to her advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals, nor is she protected under the First Amendment. The case, Thomas v. Marshall Pub Schs, concerns former Marshall, Minnesota middle school principal Mary Kay Thomas, who installed pride flags at school and established a Gay-Straight Alliance. She alleges that she was discriminated against when the school board and superintendent removed her from her position following controversy surrounding her inclusive actions, which were allegedly done against the requests of board members and the superintendent, as well as numerous members of the faculty. Related School board votes to allow discrimination against trans students The board removed gender identity from the districts nondiscrimination policy. She argued that the board violated Title VII, Title IX, and the First Amendment since she was protecting marginalized groups. Title VII and Title IX protect marginalized groups from discrimination in both employment and education, and the First Amendment protects ones right to free speech. Subscribe to our Newsletter today But U.S. District Court Judge Patrick J. Schiltz said that because she is a self-described straight, cisgender woman, she is not subject to the same protections as LGBTQ+ people. Title VII and Title IX only protect marginalized groups from legal retaliation, not actions on behalf of them. As such, the judge ruled them inapplicable. The district acted against Thomas because of hostility to her views, not because of hostility to her sex, and thus the district would have discriminated against Thomas in exactly the same way had she been a man.The First Amendment claim was thrown out because Thomas was not acting as a private citizen in defending LGBTQ+ rights but rather as the school principal. Schiltz ruled that it was not unlawful for her to be subject to pushback due to her advocacy, as it concerned her job duties and not independent speech.Additionally, Schiltz ruled that this was not retaliation because Thomas did not prove with certainty that she was removed from her position (and transferred to a separate administrative role created just for her) due to her advocacy specifically, as opposed to because she did not heed the words of staff members and her superiors. Thomas claims were dismissed without prejudice. She will remain employed with the district.Superintendent and defendant in the case Jeremy Williams said of this ruling to the Star Tribune, Marshall Public Schools is ready to close the chapter on this prolonged and costly unjustified litigation. He continued in a press release, I am proud to serve this district, where we honor and support each and every student, ensuring they have the opportunity to learn and grow in a positive environment.David Schlesinger, Thomas lawyer, said they are deliberating whether to appeal or file an additional claim in the state court. The Courts order did not end the case.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

7 of JD Vance's most painfully awkward & therefore HILARIOUS moments, so far
JD Vance has certainly made a name for himself ever since he was first announced as Donald Trump's running mate back in July. Unfortunately for him, it hasn't necessarily been a positive thing. As much as he tries (and tries and tries) to brand himself as an everyman, he frequently appears to lack the ability to connect with other human beings. His jokes fall flat, his attempts at humanizing himself through conversations with regular people are cringe-worthy, and he just comes across as an all-round awkward and WEIRD guy. And while awkwardness can be endearing, with Vance, it veers heavily towards uncomfortable. The secondhand embarrassment is real, but it's hard to feel any sympathy for a guy who thinks women only have value as mothers and who peddles conspiracy theories to a base that's often too happy to fall for them. So instead, let's take a journey through Vance's most awkward moments on the campaign trail so far as we have a good cackle.1. That time he didn't know how to order a donut. (@) (@) Enough said.2. His weird egg claims. (@) Nothing says "I lie for a living" like claiming eggs cost $4 while standing in front of multiple signs saying otherwise. (@) 3. Accidentally misgendering himself. (@) Republicans are way too obsessed with policing gender for us to let this one slide.4. Say, is Robert F. Kennedy still alive? (@) Don't ask Vance, apparently.5. Trying to own the libs by drinking Diet Mountain Dew. (@) ...what?6. Not knowing how to walk a dog. (@) 7. Getting turned away from a sandwich shop. (@) Conservatives got big mad recently when Vance had to speak to his supporters in the parking lot of Primanti Bros in Pittsburgh, PA, after initially getting turned away from the restaurant itself. (@) As entertaining as it is to watch Vance humiliate himself, we'd still much rather just never hear from him againsomething the employees of the small businesses he keeps dropping in on can probably relate to.
