The queercouple fightingfor DEI with math
When faced with questions of diversity, equity, and inclusion, detractors often respond with demands forevidenceorcomplaintsaboutcost.Husbands Chad Topaz and Jude Higdon spend their time trying to find answers to those questions on top of their other jobs as math professor, university administrator, and parents to a son and two dogs.It started when Topaz, a mathematician, found himself as one of the only people in justice spaces able to quantify some of the issues facing marginalized communities. When community members pointed out that all the artists in the new wing of a local museum were white, Topaz thenresearchedthe diversity of artists at major museums. The study found that in 18 major U.S. museums, artists are 85% white and 87% male. On top of that research, Topaz determined more diversity existed in regions, time periods, and even museum permanent collections than was being displayed. Youre taking a bad problem and making it worse through your curatorial decisions and practice, says Topaz. As it turned out, it also meant that Topaz was sometimes one of a few mathematicians with a concern for justice. When a colleague pointed out that there was only one woman on a 50-person mathematics editorial boardone of the highest professional achievements for an academicTopaz set out to figure out if that was the exception or the trend. He looked at435 journals, and it was indeed the trend. These experiences were transformative. My activism and sense of justice and my quantitative skills could be brought together, said Topaz. But finding projects was another story. Higdon, the administrator who Topaz praises as an organizational genius, was able to channel some of Topazs math-justice energy into collaborations with community partners. Im not afraid of tech nerds [and] mathematicians, said Higdon, looking affectionately at his husband, I know how to speak their language enough, but I also know how to build an organization and how to connect that work with other folks. So, following the success of early projects, the two co-founded the non-profit research institute QSIDE in 2017, which uses data science to promote justice. Citing Ida B. Wellss famous quote, the way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them, Topaz says they believe that data science can be a potent form of that light of truth. My activism and sense of justice and my quantitative skills could be brought together.Chad TopazSince then, theteamwhich has grown beyond Higdon and Topazhaspublishedmore than 15 peer-reviewed research articles, in addition to writing white papers and creating data tools. One of their biggest projects bucks up against some of the biggest arguments against any work concerned with diversity, equity, and inclusion: that its too expensive. At least in one case, they have the numbers to prove otherwise.QSIDEworks withcommunity partners who make programs to lower incarceration rates. People of color aremore likelyto be incarcerated. Community partners make programs for youth to disrupt these cycles of incarceration and poverty, says Higdon.Regardless of how effective the programs are, state governments often opt not to fund them because of their cost. That cost analysis fails to acknowledge broader economic benefits from the programsand losses from incarceration.Dr. Jude Higdon, Ed.D., QSIDE COO. Photo: QSIDEWeve built this econometric model that models out whats the true cost of incarceration versus the cost of a program that can be used by community-based organizations, says Higdon.Topaz is also the author of a forthcoming book on the intersection of data and criminal justice, titledCounting on Justice. It explores the numbers behind inequality in the U.S. criminal justice system. In the recent weeks, Higdon, Topaz, and QSIDE have been hit by the wave of anti-science and anti-DEI actions washing over the nation.Higdon said that QSIDE lost a major corporate funder out of the blue, despite being assured they were set for renewal two days prior. Is this because we have DEI in our name? Higdon asked the grant manager, and he kind of hemmed and hawed about it, before saying no, but Higdon was not convinced.Topaz, a career academic, has been watching the cuts to scientific agencies with horror. As a member of an advisory subcommittee at the National Science Foundation, Topaz had a mechanism to lodge an official complaint against the cuts, but the rest of the group balked, citing unspecific rules. When the group didnt budge, Topazpublicly resigned. The director of the NSF is complying with illegal executive orders and not complying with stays that judges have put on those illegal actions, Topaz said, It seems to me like now is exactly the time we should be speaking out about these cuts.Topaz said the idea that any of these actions will promote better science or a meritocracy is a lie. [It] is essentially segregation and keeping a vast pool of talent away from opportunities so that those opportunities can belong to white men. I wont even use the word meritocracy to describe what theyre doing because that is a lie. With the widespreadcutsto science funding, especiallyscience concerned with DEI, the team is dedicated to doing the work. We can weather this storm in a way that organizations that have a bigger infrastructure are not, Higdon said. We can stick to our principles despite the headwinds that were facing right now.At every point in the interview, Topaz and Higdon emphasized that while they are excited about the power of math and data, they dont view their contributions as more important than others. Each project has partners from boots on the ground, community members or community-based organizations that can represent the voices of affected people, alongside any other subject-matter experts they may need.We dont think our technical skills are better in any way, said Higdon. They have superpowers. We have superpowers. Together, we have a Justice League. This story is part of the Digital Equity Local Voices Fellowship lab through News is Out. The lab initiative is made possible with support from Comcast NBCUniversal. The post The queercouple fightingfor DEI with math appeared first on News Is Out.

Religious groups in Mexico City are fighting to shut down gay artist Fabin Chirezs provocative exhibition
Fabin Chirez, a gay painter from Mexico, has ignited a firestorm of controversy in Mexico City over his latest exhibition, La Venida del Seor (The Coming of the Lord).Hosted at the Antigua Academia de San Carlos and affiliated with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the collection of nine paintings blends religious imagery with homoerotic themes, a fusion that has sparked intense backlash from religious groups and conservative figures.See on InstagramThe Mexican Association of Christian Lawyers (AAC) has formally filed a complaint against Chirez with the National Council to Prevent Discrimination (CONAPRED), arguing that the exhibition violates Article 24 of the Mexican Constitution, which guarantees religious freedom. The complaint has been digitally signed by over 9,000 people, citing the use of religious symbols in what they claim are offensive and blasphemous contexts. (@) At the heart of the exhibition is the titular painting, La Venida del Seor, which depicts two altar boys licking a Paschal candle, with melting wax evoking ejaculatory symbolism. (@) Other works portray nuns and priests in suggestive poses, with allusions to sexual acts intertwined with religious iconography.See on InstagramChirez, known for his subversive and LGBTQ-inclusive depictions, sees his work as a necessary confrontation of societal taboos. Its an exercise in which I make a comparison between religious ecstasy and sexual ecstasy, two things that would appear to be opposites but actually have more in common, he told Hyperallergic.Protests erupted outside the exhibition on February 14, when Catholic demonstrators organized a sit-in and held an open-air mass, demanding the removal of the artwork. A more disruptive protest followed on February 19, when members of UNAMs Catholic community entered the gallery, wrapped caution tape around the paintings, and staged what they called a symbolic closure of the show. (@) The protesters, wearing shirts emblazoned with No ofendas mi fe en nombre del arte (Dont offend my faith in the name of art), accused Chirez of inciting Christianophobia and promoting anti-Catholic sentiment.Chirez remains unfazed by the controversy. Responding on social media, he acknowledged the complaint against him with a brief statement: I have been denounced. See on InstagramIn his interview with Hyperallergic, he pointed to what he sees as a double standard in the outrage. I think there are other issues we should be protesting against, such as the churchs abuse of power and sexual abuses within the church, he said.UNAM has implemented security measures in response to the protests but has not indicated any plans to shut down the exhibition before its scheduled closing on March 7. Chirez views this as a positive stance. See on InstagramIts important that we reconsider our strategies to confront any violence that we might face, especially by seeking community and trying to connect with people in real life who might think differently from us and exist in other contexts, he said. The protests and legal complaints surrounding La Venida del Seor underscore the ongoing tensions between artistic expression and religious belief in Mexico. While some view the exhibition as a necessary challenge to traditional narratives, others see it as an outright provocation. See on InstagramAs Chirezs work continues to stir debate, the broader question remains about where the line should be drawn between free expression and respect for religious sensitivities.

Cynthia Erivo & Lena Waithe continue to fuel engagement rumors with latest appearance
Cynthia Erivo and Lena Waithe have allegedly been quietly dating for years, and their latest appearance at the NAACP Image Awards over the weekend has once again sparked conversation especially after engagement rumors initially popped up a few weeks ago. The two arrived together at the February 22 NAACP event, where Erivo was nominated for Entertainer of the Year and Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for Wicked.Their outing follows weeks of speculation about their relationship status after Erivo was spotted wearing a diamond ring at the 2025 Grammys, where the two of them briefly met up. Though it was later confirmed not to be an engagement ring, it reignited rumors surrounding their notoriously private romance.Despite never publicly confirming (or, really, denying) their relationship, Erivo and Waithe have been closely linked since at least 2020, though they initially met at the Met Gala in 2018.Waithe recalled in an interview with Variety that she had been a fan of Erivos work in The Color Purple long before they connected in person, where they had been vibing ever since they met. (@) Erivo echoed the sentiment on one of the rare photos on her Instagram feed of the two of them together, where she referred to Waithe as perfection.See on InstagramOver the next few years, the two were frequently spotted at various events, including the BET Awards, the GLAAD Media Awards, and the Golden Globes. Although theyre mostly only spotted at these events, their growing closeness also coincided with Waithes split from ex-wife Alana Mayo, whose divorce was finalized in 2021.Though they keep their personal lives out of the spotlight, their unwavering support for each other is evident. Waithe was present at the Wicked premiere in 2024, seen holding Erivos gown at the Tony Awards and seated beside her at the 2025 Golden Globes and Grammys.Meanwhile, Erivo has expressed admiration for Waithe and has celebrated her birthday with a heartfelt social media post.See on InstagramWhile fans continue to speculate about their relationship, Erivo and Waithe remain committed to keeping things low-key. Their NAACP Awards appearance was just the latest example of their quiet but constant presence in each others livesno public declarations necessary. While we respect their privacy, we have to say, we're also totally supportive of this relationship.I mean, could you literally ask for a cuter couple to represent strong Black queer women?!We may never know the full extent of their relationship or their love together, but we hope they keep us guessing. And we hope they keep showing up to support each other every step of the way. Perhaps we'll get a more telling answer about the "not an engagement" ring when Erivo undoubtedly finishes her EGOT collection at the upcoming 2025 Oscars.

Performance of pro-revolution 'Les Misrables' song at White House dinner raises questions
A performance that took place at the White House National Governors Association Dinner over the weekend is raising questions across social media.Video circulating online shows the U.S. Army Chorus filing into the dinner while singing "Do You Hear the People Sing?" from Les Misrables. Specifically, they sang the reprise version, promising, "Even the darkest night will end / And the sun will rise."Les Misrables is, of course, a story about one mans quest for redemption, set against a backdrop of injustice and revolution. The poor are oppressed and abused by the wealthy ruling class, and the government is seen as the enemy."Will you join in our crusade? / Who will be strong and stand with me?" the lyrics ask. "Somewhere beyond the barricade / Is there a world you long to see?"People horrified by the current administrations sweeping changes in just a month after taking power were quick to hope that this was a bold display of resistance from the choir. After all, its literally a song about a revolution against the government. (@) "Oh my gosh! #Resistance takes on many forms. The military choir choose to sing a revolutionary song from Les Misrables to make a point to all in attendance. This is so amazing! Keep fighting the good fight in whatever way you can America" (@) "They picked Les Misa musical about standing up to tyranny. They protested you at your own event and you were too stupid to get it." (@) But others werent so certain. For one thing, Donald Trump himself has used this song at his rallies in the past (to the fury of the musicals creators). And we know he has spent years claiming to be the one standing against the establishment, and that his base eats it all up without a moment of critical consideration. (@) Theres also the fact that this was the reprise of the song from the end of the musical after the revolution failed. "I mean, the rebellion does not end well in Les Mis," one redditor pointed out. "[The song choice] could even be 'go ahead and rise up, we will just cut you down' kind of messaging from the government."So the intention behind the performance remains unclear. But choosing it certainly caused a stir, and resulted in a lot of people across social media pointing out the potential irony, if nothing else. (@) "Going to lose my mind. Apparently the White House chose Do You Hear the People Sing? to be performed at the Governors Ball. You know, the Les Mis song famously calling for a peoples revolution in 1800s France? About overthrowing the government? Through violent populism??" (@) do you hear the people sing is a protestagainst government tyranny as it was set during the paris uprising of 1832 and not for nothing but i believe a general knowledge of les mis and its themes should be required for kennedy center board membership" (@) "the irony of singing les mis a week after he called himself the king is wild" (@) "These people think theyre cultured enough to run the Kennedy Center yet think having 'Do You Hear the People Sing?' sung at them is a compliment." (@) "i was filled with so much hope when i found out about how 'do you hear the people sing' was sung at the white house governors ball thinking 'wow its crazy that none of them understand what this song means'. until i found out that they think theyre the revolutionaries"

"Our director Travis Knight has assembled the most incredible ensemble cast and created a stunning tapestry of Eternia and its surrounding world."After promising "more to come," he added that the picture in question is a "sneak peek at the Sword of Power." And when pictures from set leaked earlier this month, people seemed even more divided.Fans of Masters of the Universe itself are likely still withholding judgement until more is known about the actual story to be presented in the film, but fans of Galitzine? It's not uncommon for big feature films to do promotional shoots with body doubles of their actors, sometimes even transposing their faces onto the bodies later. But we also don't know it's not Galitzine. So unless we ever explicitly hear otherwise, thirsting over He-Man's muscles and, um, sword is exactly what the actor's fans need to tide them over until the movie hits theaters next summer.

Obsessed with 'Yellowjackets'? Here are all the other times the cast starred in LGBTQ+ roles
Yellowjackets is one of the best and queerest shows on television, period. Weaving together two timelines in the lives of a group of soccer players who crash-landed in the woods and were forced to survive, and the traumatized and dangerous adults they became the show has quickly solidified itself as must-watch Sapphic programming. The series not only features queer love, but a cast stacked with LGBTQ+ folks, allies, and forever favorites like Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Liv Hewson. While this show alone is enough to make them forever queer faves, it turns out that for many of the cast, this is just their latest foray into presenting LGBTQ+ rep on the big and small screen. So if you're just as obsessed with Yellowjackets as we are, here are all the times they starred in queer roles (and where to watch them).Melanie Lynskey - Shauna (adult)There is a reason that Melanie Lynskey is an absolute queer icon. Not only is she a proud pusher of the homosexual agenda" every chance she gets, but she has also starred in several queer roles some of which were roots for an entire generation of Sapphics.Lynskeys breakout role was in the 1994, Peter Jackson-directed film Heavenly Creatures. She starred opposite Kate Winslet and depicted the true story of Pauline Parker and her friend Juliet Hulme whose ill-fated romance and obsession led to murder in the 1950s. In 1999 Lynskey starred alongside Clea Duvall and Natasha Lyonne in the lesbian classic But I'm a Cheerleader. Lynskey played Hilary, a teen going through conversion therapy. Of course, Lynskey made an appearance in The L Word. She popped up in season five of the beloved lesbian series as Clea Mason who flirted with Alice. Aw, what could have been? She also starred in the quirky lesbian short film, The Nearly Unadventurous Life of Zoe Cadwaulder which sees her as a young woman who overcomes her phobias and finds her Sapphic soulmate. Jasmin Savoy Brown - Taissa (teen)Out and proud IRL, Jasmin Savoy Brown has also made a career of representing queer characters on the screen specifically in the horror genre.Brown plays, reoccurring fan-fave, Mindy Meeks-Martin in the Scream franchise. Mindy first appeared in Scream 5 as the horror movie expert who lays out the rules of survival, returned in 6 with an ill-fated romance, and is set to come back again (and hopefully survive) the upcoming seventh entry in the franchise. But before that Brown starred in Sound of Violence as a queer young woman with synesthesia. As a child, she witnessed the murder of her parents by a serial killer, and as a result, she experiences pleasure at the sound of human pain.Tawny Cypress - Taissa (adult)Tawny Cypress, who plays Browns adult counterpart is also out and proud in real life. While Taissa is her first fictional queer role on screen, she did lend her IRL queerness to the documentary Queer for Fear where she discussed Mary Shelley, queer mother of horrors contributions to the genre. Liv Hewson - Teen Van (teen)Nonbinary, Australian actor Liv Hewson is staying busy with their role in Yellowjackets and the upcoming feminist mystery series He Had it Coming on the way, but Van isn't their only queer role. They rang in the holiday season in 2019 with Let it Snow. Lauren Ambrose - adult Van (adult)Before Lauren Ambrose starred in Yellowjackets and made us fall in love with the VHS-slinging adult version of Van, she starred as Claire in Six Feet Under which saw the youngest sibling of that family exploring her bisexuality in college.Christina Ricci - adult Misty (adult)While so far Christina Riccis character, Misty, hasnt been depicted as queer (but it's Yellowjackets so chances are good that will change) she has always been a Sapphic fave, both for her queer-coded roles in Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain and Now and Then when she was a teen, but for her incredible and heartbreaking portrayal of Selby Wall, the real-life lover of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003s Monster. Oh, and there was that one time she kissed Ashley Greene on her short-lived series Pan-Am. Juliette Lewis - Natalie (adult)Were still not over how things ended for adult Natalie in the season two finale, in large part to just how incredibly Juliette Lewis played that role. The same can be said of her portrayal in Sacred Lies: Singing Bones in which she played Harper a telemarketer with a passion for with solving "Jane Doe" crimes on the side and for making out with with a CSI tech played by Orange is the New Blacks Kimiko Glenn.Ella Purnell - JackieWhile shippers will never forgive the show for not making Jackie and Shauna canon, one thing is clear: Ella Purnell is the literal voice of Sapphic geeks everywhere. Not only did she lend those dulcet tones to the role of nonbinary alien teen Gwyn in Star Trek: Prodigy, but as the bi character Jinx in Arcane. Nia Sondaya - AkilahAkilah is quickly becoming one of the most intriguing characters in season three. With her connection to nature, and seeming heel turn she may be the last domino to fall into total chaos. We love to see it. We also loved to see actress Nia Sondaya as a lesbian teen in love and on the run in the Netflix original Heart Shot.Steven Krueger - Ben ScottBefore Steven Krueger was closeted gay Coach Ben on Yellowjackets, he had a breakout role in the vampire series The Originals as Josh Rosza a tourist turned vampire sire and lover to lead vampire baddie Marcel. Initially, he was supposed to have a minor role but he quickly became a fan-fave and was promoted to one of the leads. Sarah Desjardins - Callie SadeckiBefore Sarah Desjardins starred as Callie on Yellowjackets she played the role of Hope on the sci-fi YouTube series Impulse who initially struggled with and then embraced her lesbian identity.

Redefining Luxury at SeaSince 2021, Virgin Voyages has been redefining the cruising experience, introducing a much-needed innovative approach to the high seas. With its fleet of "Lady Ships," an homage to founder Sir Richard Branson and the Virgin brand's British roots, this award-winning cruise line caters exclusively to adults, offering a modern, sophisticated sanctuary for travelers 18+. Among the fleet is Resilient Lady, which set sail in May 2023. Guests, or "Sailors" as Virgin calls them, enjoy complimentary access to filtered still and sparkling water, tea, coffee, and soft drinks throughout the ship. Additionally, the fleet is designed with state-of-the-art energy-efficient technology, reflecting Virgin Voyages' commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.For those who seek a more refined seascape rather than an EDM-fueled extravaganza often marketed towards gay travelers, Virgin Voyages strikes the perfect balance between vibrant entertainment, serene retreats, and inclusivity for all within the LGBTQ+ community. These lively performances offer a delightfully raunchy spectacle.Music pulses throughout the ship, reflecting Sir Richard Bransons Virgin Music roots. For the adventurous at heart, Squid Ink, the first tattoo studio at sea, offers a chance to leave with more than memories. Whether youre considering a custom design, permanent makeup, or a piercing, the studio features resident tattoo artists and occasional guest artists for a truly unique experience. Rates start at $200.With so much to explore, its no surprise that many Virgin guests are eager to returnthis is a boat where youll never run out of things to do!Your home at sea: A closer look at the cabinsThe cabins aboard Resilient Lady redefine comfort at sea, blending sleek modernity with thoughtful design and a touch of nautical tradition. With crisp white walls, wooden accents, and carefully considered feng shui, the spaces feel both stylish and functional. For those opting for a sea-facing terrace, the addition of a private balcony with two chairs, a small table, and a custom-designed hammockhandwoven by artisans from Yellow Leaf Hammocks, a social enterprise empowering women in Thailandwas a personal highlight of my trip. Swinging by the sea, listening to the waves, and gazing at the endless horizon felt like pure bliss.Practicality meets innovation with intuitive features throughout the cabin. Built-in sensors conserve energy when you leave and enter by closing or opening the blinds and adjusting the temperature, lighting options offer customizable modes, from photo shoot to in the mood and a wearable bracelet replaces the traditional keycard, granting access to your room as well as any onboard purchases. The bathroom, though compact, is cleverly designed with a rain shower, wall-mounted Red Flower shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, as well as a clothesline for drying swimwear. Other thoughtful inclusions are face cloths, wall-mounted glass holders for toothbrushes, and a box of facial tissues. Robes and slippers are not included in standard cabins, but there is plenty of storage, including wardrobes, drawers, baskets, and hooksideal for keeping your belongings organized. A lifejacket is also neatly stored in the closet.Daily housekeeping can be requested using the cabins intuitive indicator system, located inside the closet area. The tidy room button, marked by a spilled drink icon, turns blue when pressed, while the do not disturb button lights up red. The room itself features a transitional bed that converts between a bed and a sofa, a vanity desk with an ottoman, ample US/USB outlets, a 43 4K flat-screen TV, and daily replenished still and sparkling water.By the first night, settling in feels effortless. With smart storage solutions and thoughtful touches like the signature ocean scent that subtly fills the air, the cabins on Resilient Lady offer a cozy yet functional retreatperfect for unwinding after a day of Mediterranean adventure.Dining like a rock star: The culinary experienceDining aboard Resilient Lady is a refreshing departure from the standard cruise experience. Instead of a single large dining room, Virgin Voyages offers more than 20 unique eateries, each delivering its own vibe, menu, and atmosphere. While they welcome walk-ins, reservations via the Virgin app are highly recommended, as popular spots fill up quickly. Whether you're craving Korean BBQ at Gunbae or elevated Mexican flavors at Pink Agave, the dining experience feels more like a curated journey through world-class restaurants than a typical cruise offering. For plant-based cruisers like myself, Razzle Dazzle is a standout. This vibrant venue features a menu focused on vegetarian and vegan fare but also offers what Virgin calls "naughty" options for those seeking meat or fish. The Test Kitchen is a must-visit for those who love adventure on their plate. This multi-course experience takes you through experimental and artfully presented dishes, each a surprise. This restaurant invites you to slow down (allow yourself at least 2 hours to dine here) and savor every bite, making it one of the highlights of the culinary offerings onboard.Upstairs in The Galley, the ships main food market, guests can enjoy a variety of quick-service options, from sushi and tacos to freshly made soups and salads and comforting diner classics like burgers and fries. While the dessert selection here is extensive, it would benefit from a couple more vegan-friendly options. Even so, the market remains an excellent spot for casual dining without making a reservation. This is also where tea, coffee, and soft drinks like juices and sodas are easily accessible throughout the day.If you don't get your sugar fix upstairs at The Galley, head down to deck seven, and you'll find Lick Me 'Til I Scream offering a rotating selection of delicious ice creams and sorbets in cups or cones. Flavors change frequently, so if you spot one you're interested in, don't waitit might not be available the next day. There's always at least one vegan option available, typically a refreshing sorbet.Virgin's commitment to sustainability extends across its culinary program, too, with all seafood and produce responsibly sourced to ensure both quality and environmental impact. Whether indulging in Mediterranean-inspired small plates at The Dock House or creating a custom pizza at The Pizza Place, dining on Resilient Lady sets a new standard for thoughtful and inclusive culinary experiences. And when it comes to drinks, Resilient Lady delivers some of the best bars at sea. From the cozy Draught Haus, where you can enjoy craft beers and artisanal brews, to Sip, an elegant Champagne-focused lounge, there's something for every mood. Whether you prefer a classic cocktail by the pool at Gym & Tonic or a nautically themed drink at Loose Cannon, you'll never be far from a perfectly crafted beverage.Ports of call: What to see and do at each stopVirgin Voyages offers Shore Thingsa curated selection of land excursions easily booked through the app. Vetted for quality and convenience, these experiences ensure peace of mind as you plan your adventures. The ship boards in Piraeus, a port city near Athens, making it a great idea to arrive in Athens at least a day early to avoid any last-minute travel stress. Conveniently, you can check in your luggage at the port and explore before officially boarding. For those wanting to maximize their time, consider a scenic drive and walking tour of Athens, complete with airport pickup, before heading to the ship. While Virgins Shore Things offers a wide variety of options, the more popular ones can sell out, or you might crave something a bit more unique. Below are some excursions I explored in other ports.MykonosThe Resilient Lady docks in the celebrity-favorite, sun-soaked island of Mykonos on October 20, giving you 12 hours to explore this iconic island. I opted for a 4-hour Private Jeep Tour with WCM Mykonos Tours, a family-run company that ensures a personal touch to your adventure. The pickup was seamless, with our friendly driver, Dimitris, waiting at the port and holding a sign with my name. The Jeep was clean, spacious, and perfect for up to four guests, making it an excellent option for families or friends at $524. Our tour began at the Armenistis Lighthouse, offering panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and a serene start to the day. We then visited the Bay of Ftelia, known for its tranquil beaches and windsurfing spots. At ersini Beach, I took the opportunity to ground myself on the soft Greek white sand and even went for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters. Fokos Beach was another highlight, a secluded gem far from the bustling crowds. Dimitris tailored the trip perfectly, allowing ample time to soak in the natural beauty at each stop. The tour also included a visit to Paleokastro, home to the ruins of a Venetian castle, and Ano Mera village, where we paused for a picturesque lunch stop (food not included). Along the way, Dimitris shared fascinating insights into Mykonos, from the history behind its iconic white homes with blue accents to quirky details like how door colors signify family tradesred for farming and blue for anglers. The Jeep was ideal for navigating the steep dirt roads, taking us to hidden spots not easily accessible. The tour ended around 2 p.m., with the option to be dropped off directly at the ship. Instead, I opted to be dropped off at Mykonos Old Town to wander its labyrinthine streets and enjoy some shopping before making my way back to the ship. The walk from Old Town to the port is both easy and scenic, with a quick ferry ride offering more opportunities to soak in the charm of this enchanting destination. This was my second time visiting Mykonos but my first in the off-season, which felt like a dreamfewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and a uniquely magical atmosphere.SicilyWhen Resilient Lady docks in Sicily on October 22, it's your opportunity to soak in the irresistible allure of this culture-soaked island. Like many, I fell under Sicily's spell after season two of The White Lotus. To explore the dreamy locales up close, I chose the Private White Lotus On Land Tour with Discover Messina Sicily. This tour isn't just for White Lotus fans; it's for anyone eager to experience Sicily's undeniable charm. The 7-hour Catania shore excursion began at 8:30 a.m., when our guide, Sara (a delightfully knowledgeable, tour-certified local), whisked us from the Catania cruise port in a sleek Mercedes. At $960 for up to four guests, the price includes seamless transport and peace of mind. With most of the tour centered around Taormina, a fair distance from Catania, Discover Messina Sicily's guarantee to get you back before the ship departs is worth its weight in gold. The highlights of the tour are plentiful. Taormina enchants with its dramatic Greek-Roman Amphitheater, picturesque streets, and jaw-dropping views of the Ionian Sea. Castelmola, a quaint hilltop town, offers a quirkier vibe. Don't miss Bar Turrisi, a cheeky caf with risqu dcor inspired by the male anatomy. Sip a strong espresso and explore the nearby charming souvenir shops selling Sicilian keepsakes. One unforgettable stop is the iconic San Domenico Palace, now a Four Seasons hotel and one of the world's most famous properties, set on the site of a 14th-century convent. Fans of The White Lotus will recognize it as the backdrop for much of season two. While access to the grounds is restricted to guests, with plenty of notice, you can book a Mediterranean-inspired lunch at Anciovi, offering jaw-dropping views as stunning as the food, or a spa treatment at their Botanica Spa, which recently launched a package for non-guests. Inside, the hotel exudes unparalleled elegance, with Dolce & Gabbana sun loungers framing its 69-foot infinity pool that appears to blend seamlessly with the Ionian Sea. The lush gardens are a masterpiece in themselves, perfect for a quiet stroll before returning to reality. Afterward, Discover Messina Sicily ensures a seamless ride back to the ship, leaving you inspired and craving more Sicilian magic, and by the time you're back on board, you'll be plotting your returnbecause once you've sipped almond wine and stood atop Mt. Tauro, Sicily leaves a mark you can't quite shake.Palma de MallorcaOn October 24, guests will arrive at the sunny Balearic gem of Palma de Mallorca, where a visit to UM Beach House is the perfect way to embrace Mediterranean bliss. This chic beach club balances laid-back vibes and authentic European style. With both a stunning pool and a small oceanfront access point for dips in the Mediterranean, it's ideal for those who love the sea but not the sand. After days on the cruise, it's a chance to truly feel grounded while basking in breathtaking surroundings.UM Beach House is more than just a spot to swimtheir cocktails and food are exceptional. The Coffee Break is perfect for coffee and Bailey's fans and comes highly recommended, and their strawberry-flavored summer daiquiris are a must-try. Their burgers and tacos (with vegan options available) are equally stellar. Arrive early to snag a prime spot and enjoy the chill vibe before the music ramps up around 3:30 PM, as locals begin to gather. After soaking in the Med and poolside vibes, explore Palma's treasures before heading back to the boat. Snap Instagram-worthy shots at the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria (more commonly referred to as La Seu), stroll the charming streets of the Old Town, or shop for artisanal trinkets at local boutiques. This mix of relaxation and exploration ensures your Palma stop becomes a standout memoryone where you truly lived the Mediterranean dream. Pro tip: Bumper in at least 15 minutes for Ubers to arrive on this island!Mainland Spain: Valencia & BarcelonaResilient Lady wraps up its journey with two unforgettable stops in mainland Spain. First up is Valencia on October 25, a city celebrated for its futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, vibrant street art, and delicious paella. I had my heart set on a Sidecar Tour, but it was sold out, so I opted instead for an adventure to Plaza de la Virgen. This historic square, with its iconic Turia Fountain and Basilica of the Virgin, is perfect for a morning stroll. Nearby, the El Carmen neighborhood boasts colorful murals and charming cobblestone streets, while the stunning Gothic La Lonja de la Seda is a UNESCO gem worth visiting. For a unique coffee break, Caf de las Horas near Plaza de la Virgen is a must. With its eclectic vibe, featuring chandeliers, ornate mirrors, and plush seating, its a cozy and whimsical spot to unwind. On October 26, the cruise concludes its journey with a final stop in Barcelona, where the citys architectural wonders, like Antoni Gaud's Sagrada Famlia and Park Gell, await. With an afternoon flight, I didnt have time to explore, but I recommend staying longer to fully immerse yourself in this cultural gem. Whether strolling down La Rambla, savoring tapas in the Gothic Quarter, or soaking in Mediterranean views from Montjuc, Barcelona promises an unforgettable finale to your adventure. The price of paradise: costs and inclusionsEmbarking on the Mykonos Moons to Spanish Sunrises voyage aboard Resilient Lady, set to sail from Piraeus (Athens), Greece, to Barcelona, Spain, from October 19-26, 2025, promises to be a transformative weeklong experience, offering a blend of luxury, style, and thoughtful inclusions. Prices start at approximately $1,710 per person (or $2,990 for two sharing) for an Insider cabin. Perfect for solo travelers or duos eager to explore every corner of the ship and its ports, this cozy yet stylish option ensures you have a private retreat without the feeling that you overindulged. For those who dream of morning stretching and evening stargazing with uninterrupted views of the horizon, the Sea Terrace cabins, starting at around $3200 per person (or $3,732 for two sharing), feature private outdoor spaces with a signature handwoven hammocka haven for relaxation. For the ultimate indulgence, the Rockstar and Mega Rockstar Quarters, starting at $8968 for two sharing, offer Tom Dixon-designed suites, marble-clad bathrooms, and exclusive access to the ship's most coveted areas, such as Richard's Rooftop. This private sundeck includes complimentary champagne and cocktails during Richard's Sunset Hour from 56 PM each day. No matter your choice, every voyage includes Wi-Fi, gym access, a range of fitness classes, all dining (with many menus crafted by Michelin-starred chefs), gratuities, and world-class entertainment developed in partnership with well-known brands like famed Brooklyn nightclub House of Yes and Weiner Entertainment Group. Queer representation in Star Wars has so much further to go
Star Wars is a massive global franchise that has come quite a long way in terms of representation and progress since it began in 1977, but it has so much further to go.Its likely little surprise that Star Wars isnt exactly breaking new ground when it comes to queer representation. Even for those not all that interested in the franchise, the fanbase or, at least, parts of the fanbase has become notorious for going after the shows, creators and actors for any ounce of diversity. The Acolyte, which was released in 2024, was a prime example, and many ofThe Acolytes actors have spoken out about the racismthey experienced from viewers and online.Queerness, be it in terms of relationships on screen or gender identity, has received similar treatment from Star Wars audiences, and it seems Disney which owns the franchise through its subsidiary, Lucasfilm is largely bowing down to that section of the fanbase. There has been very little queer representation whatsoever in the Star Wars shows and movies, and what little there has been hasnt been all that revolutionary.Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker had the franchises very first queer kiss on screen when two unnamed women kissed in the background of the films final celebration scene. This ended up getting plenty of pushback from both sides. There was significant homophobic backlash to the decision from viewers who were furious that Star Wars would have any queer characters whatsoever, but queer audiences were unhappy as well. For many LGBTQ+ viewers, this quick kiss between background characters no one knew felt like a way toappease queer fanswithout the franchise really sticking its neck out.The Acolyte is perhaps the Star Wars project that has had themost queer representationto date, but even that was minimal at best. The main characters, Osha and Mae, had two mothers, Mother Aniseya and Mother Koril, but the show never clarified whether they were romantically involved. It did suggest a queering of family structure Aniseya created the girls using the Force, and Koril carried them yet their relationship remained ambiguous, given their roles in the coven and limited screen time. The Acolyte also made reference to they/them pronouns, although that felt nearly as much like a throwaway as the kiss in The Rise of Skywalker had. The use of the pronouns came when protagonist Osha was asking about a character shed just met andsaid, Is he, or they, with us? As the kiss in The Rise of Skywalker had, this caused backlash from those who decried its supposed woke agenda and from the queer community for being alow-stakes form of representation. Still, this was progress in Star Wars, and its worth noting that the actor who plays Osha and Mae, Amandla Stenberg, is nonbinary.Oddly, Star Wars has had one genuinely solid queer story arc on screen, but it seems to have flown under the radar for the most part, perhaps because it was in an animated show, which may reach a different demographic. In Star Wars: Tales of the Empire, which also came out last year, anonbinary Jedi survivor of Order 66 the event that wiped out nearly all the Jedi alive at the time was being hunted by the Inquisitors. The character, who wasnt named in the episode but had a legitimate storyline, used exclusively they/them pronouns, which was reinforced throughout the episode. There is also a minor character, Djovi Resmia, who uses they/them pronouns inStar Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, another animated show. This show is targeted to a significantly younger audience, which may also explain why it hasnt gotten the same heat as representation in other Star Wars movies and shows has.Star Wars movies and shows are therefore disappointingly far behind in terms of queer representation, which is only all the more frustrating in light of how progressive the books are. In fact, the canon Star Wars books Queens Hope, Brotherhood and The Secrets of the Clone Troopers have all cemented Sister as a canonically trans clone trooper, and the Ahsoka novel featured a plotline in which Kaeden Larte developed feelings for Ahsoka Tano. These are just a few examples, but Star Wars books are consistently more diverse than the movies and shows in myriad ways.Queer representation in Star Wars may seem inconsequential to some, but the truth is, this matters far beyond just the damage it does to the fans. Because it is such a massive franchise, Star Wars can be considered a litmus test of the cultural climate. The franchises hesitancy to depict queer stories on screen and the intense backlash to any diversity in the shows and movies suggest a broader cultural hostility to queerness, particularly when it comes to representation on screen. This issue with Star Wars is also part of a larger Disney trend of pulling back from representation, especially queer representation. This was most recently clear with Disneys animated kids show Win or Lose, whichremoved a trans storyline from the showentirely. This example is particularly disappointing because rather than not including representation in the first place, Disney was actively removing it. In addition to depriving trans kids the opportunity to see themselves on screen, this decision sent a major message about Disneys stance on trans people and representation on screen.TheStar Wars Celebrationis taking place in Japan this April, and several new shows and movies are expected to be announced. Unfortunately, it doesnt seem likely that any upcoming Star Wars project will suddenly shift the franchises approach to queer representation. It may be quite some time before Star Wars movies and shows accurately reflect the fanbase, which has only become queerer and more diverse with time. The post Queer representation in Star Wars has so much further to go appeared first on News Is Out.

MAGA is turning on itself as Dan Crenshaw threatens to 'kill' Tucker Carlson in hot mic moment
Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw is helping MAGA implode by getting caught on a hot mic threatening former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. In an exchange with a journalist, while having his mic removed after being interviewed by conservative British news channel GB News, the camera was still rolling, and Crenshaw called Carlson the worst person and said hed never met the right-wing pundit in person, Politico reports. If I ever meet him, Ill fking kill him, the Texas congressman can be heard saying. (@) Before the candid moment, Crenshaw was critical of Carlsons opposition to U.S. aid to Ukraine and said the political commentator and known conspiracy theorist doesnt know what hes talking about.Carlson defender Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) took to X (formerly Twitter) to ask Crenshaw if he had threatened her friend, to which he responded, Lol, no.Steven Edginton, the journalist who interviewed Crenshaw, shared the now-deleted clip, writing on X that he kept the receipts. Then, Carlson escalated things with a veiled threat himself. Why dont you come sit for an interview and well see how you do? Ill send you my address, he wrote on X, noting that he tried to laugh the remark off, but Crenshaw just doubled down, saying, "No seriously, I would kill him (@) MAGA seems to be divided about whos side they are on, but the rest of the internet was popping popcorn and watching the MAGA fallout and taking the opportunity to roast both men. AI video of Trump kissing Elon Musk's toes goes viral after pranksters hack HUD building
Creative pranksters targeted a federal building this week with an AI-generated video highlighting the resentment over Elon Musks growing power within the U.S. government. On Monday morning, TV screens throughout the Department of Housing and Urban Development building in Washington, D.C., began looping a video clip showing Donald Trump kissing, sucking on, and essentially caressing Musks (two left) feet."LONG LIVE THE REAL KING," read a large, all-caps text overlay across the screen.According to a Bluesky post from independent journalist Marisa Kabas, the video looped for about five minutes before it was shut down."Building staff couldnt figure out how to turn it off so sent people to every floor to unplug TVs," she wrote. (@) Its still unclear who pulled off the prank, or how, but the likely message behind it requires little interpretation. Musk has spent the last several weeks bulldozing various federal agencies, laying off employees en masse and making public claims of widespread corruption using misinterpreted data that many Americans dont think he should ever have been allowed access to in the first place. That an unelected billionaire has been given so much power in Trumps administration (and has extended some of that power to similarly unelected young adults) has been extremely contentious. Drawing attention to that in a federal building on the day government employees lost the option to work from home, at least partially by Musks demand makes sense."Staff have viewed this as a sign of resistance that has brought a lot of joy," an anonymous HUD employee told NBC News.Meanwhile, HUD spokesperson Kasey Lovett lamented to The Independent that it was "another waste of taxpayer dollars and resources." Presumably, whatever taxpayer resourceswere drained by employees walking around shutting off TVs for five minutes will bounce back more quickly than those created by the tax cuts Trump wants to give billionaires.Online, MAGAs echoed Lovett, calling for whomever enabled the video to be fired. Some even suggested this was grounds for lifetime imprisonment or dismantling HUD entirely super normal responses to the egregious "crime" of insulting an elected official.Other responses were more mindful of exactly why this is happening to begin with. (@) "Looks like somebody at HUD found a great answer for Elon's what did you do this week? questionnaire." (@) "Maybe having 20 year old racist nerds fire competent IT staff was a bad idea." (@) "Hearing that nobody knew how to turn off the videos or TVs, so folks had to manually unplug every screen. Feels like an apt metaphor for these horrifying times. In not funny news, HUD will cut 84% of staff from a key office that focuses on solving homelessness." (@) "This would be the moment I'd tell Elon to gather all his inside sunglasses and his petite Nazis with their swoop bangs and get the hell outta my sight forever." (@) "VEEP was a documentary and this insurrectionist presidency is an abomination and global embarrassment."

  • Queer Coded Fantasy Characters Xena Gabrielle Hawkman Princess Aura
    WWW.PRIDE.COM
10 queer-coded fantasy characters from our childhoods
These queercoded fantasy characters snatched our imaginations and young hearts!Time was that finding out and proud characters in TV and movies was rare indeed. In their palace there were queer-coded characters, typically villains but not always, that gave young LGBTQ+ folks the opportunity to relate to who they were seeing on screen. These depictions tended to be in genre storytelling, like horror and sci-fi, and of course animation, but also the fantasy genre is rife with characters who were coded oh-so-queerly. After all, there is a reason were so excited for the new Masters of the Universe film, it's not just because Nicholas Galitizine is entering his twunk era (though it doesn't hurt) as Prince Adam, its because He-man and the Masters of the Universe like many of the other fantasy programs and movies we watched in our youth were unbelievably gay in retrospect. Whether it was serving up high camp, femme realness, or simply leather-bound muscles, these characters were near and dear to our young queer hearts. Hawkman in Flash GordonFlash Gordon may be the queerest and kinkiest family-friendly film ever made. From the Queen soundtrack to the bore worms torture scene, and every inch of the costumes in this film, this movie screams gay, in the best and most camp way possible. While we could really name any character here as having queer root potential, we have to give the honor to Hawkman, the fighting, shouting, leather daddy, bear of our fantasies.Princess Aura in Flash GordonAnd if youre a Sapphic of a certain age with a taste for high femme kink, Princess Aura is probably at least partly to blame. While she spends the film pining for Flash and eventually falling in love with Prince Barin, we know a bisexual diva when we see one. Jareth the Goblin King in LabyrinthDavid Bowie in those skin-tight pants and codpiece awoke a generation of bisexuals. Sure he was kind of a creep with the whole baby-stealing and the teen-seducing thing (cringe), but regardless of how problematic he is now, Jareth will forever remind us of the babe. What babe? Him.Princess Mombi in Return to OzSpeaking of queer-coded villains, Princess Mombi and her harem of lady heads in Return to Oz, was both terrifying and alluring. You just know she made them kiss at night.Lord Humungus in Mad Max 2: The Road WarriorWhile we won't be racing out to watch this movie again, due to the Mel Gibson being a terrible human being of it all, for baby 80s gays Lord Humungus was a leather daddy awakening moment. I mean, come on just look at him.Red Sonja in Red SonjaThe camp factor alone in Red Sonja makes it queer fave worthy, but in addition to all that leather and swordplay was the statuesque Brigitte Nielsen as the titular Red Sonja. This powerful warrior vowed never to sleep with a man (who couldn't defeat her in battle but lets just hand-wave that detail away) after being bestowed with powers by a goddess. Gay.Xena and Gabrielle in Xena: Warrior PrincessWhat made Xena such a potent queer awakening moment? Well, there was the Lucy Lawless factor, of course. But she was also incredibly powerful with Sapphic swagger for days. Add to that her forever-yearning friendship with Gabrielle and it was pitch-perfect for baby lesbians everywhere.Lady Amalthea aka The Last Unicorn in The Last UnicornUnicorns are lesbian AF. Nuff said? Ok fine, she also had zero time for the boys and just wanted to run, be free, and be fabulous. Lesbian-coded.Adora aka She-Ra in ;She-Ra: Princess of PowerWhile the 2018 series remake by Nate Stevenson brought all the subtext to the fore, She-Ra was always queer. She was strong, beautiful, could rock a boot like no one's business, and rode a rainbow pegasus.

Tate McRae says her gay fans are her 'favorite' & reveals her dream collaboration
She's all we wanna be!Tate McRae is the hottest up-and-coming singer in pop music. With a slew of hits now under her belt, the powerhouse is quickly becoming one of the biggest female artists this decade and her star is only on the rise. Her latest project So Close to What just dropped last Friday and it's already receiving critical acclaim worldwide. Although her popular songs such as "greedy," "Sports car," "exes," "It's ok I'm ok," and more have taken over the charts the past few years, McRae's success didn't just happen overnight.OG fans remember McRae's humble beginnings when she came in third place on So You Think You Can Dance back in 2016 at only 13 years old. Four years later, the star's music career started taking off with "you broke me first" becoming an international hit and her first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.Fast forward to today, the talented entertainer has released three albums and she's gearing up for her global Miss Possessive Tour that'll have her headlining at various arenas across the globe. She's certainly come a long way from performing at gay clubs in the early days of her career.McRae may be a supernova at only 21 years old, but she's staying true to her roots by surrounding herself with a queer support system and releasing music that resonates with who she truly is. Scroll below to read PRIDE's interview with Tate McRae on her new album So Close to What and why she considers her gay fans to be her best fans. See on Instagram PRIDE: Congratulations on your third album! So Close to What has a little bit of everything, but how would you describe your latest project? For me, it's giving liberation, sexy, and so hot!Tate McRae: I like that! I'd definitely say liberation, feminine, bold, and maybe a little sexy. I would say there's some sensual movement sprinkled throughout this campaign. I feel like the visuals have been the most exciting part for me. It's been a dream! It's been a dream for us to watch! I'm obsessed with all of the singles and music videos this era.We were so excited! My music taste is very diverse. One day I can write a folk song and another day I can write about a sports car. It really depends on my mood. I don't want to do just one thing. I want to be versatile and I want to be able to sit down in my show and talk directly to my fans, then I want to be able to dance and feel sexy.I'm so glad you're touching on the sexy themes in your new music! Why was it important for you to channel that sexy energy and empowerment on this album?I think I was honestly envisioning myself going on tour again. These new songs are the ones I want to feel on stage. Ever since I started touring, I think about that every time I write. It's safe to say this upcoming tour is going to be iconic. You are going to get a show! I will not go easy on the audience. I do the most at all times! The stories this year mean so much more to me than they have before. They're really f***ing personal and it makes for a better performance. We're in the process of creating the show right now. It's going to be crazy! See on Instagram Your journey as an entertainer has been such a joy to watch. How much fun are you having merging your passions in dance and music into one career? It finally feels like I can be myself again. I trained in dance my whole life and then I lost it for five years. When I was 20, I was just like, 'F*** this!' I've trained for a reason. My dancing is from my soul. I can't just cut that part of me off. It's been so rejuvenating getting to bring it back into my art. I feel like myself again. That's what it's all about! Your music is clearly coming from a place of authenticity and it's really landing with your fans.Honestly, I'm living the dream. I feel so lucky and blessed. It's everything I've ever wanted to do.I know all of your fans are really enjoying your rise to fame, but there's nobody who loves you more than your LGBTQ+ fans!Of course! They're my favorite. No one beats them. Nobody is better than them. My whole team is gay! That's the only opinion I really want when I'm releasing music. I feel lucky that I have their opinion. We want to do the most and push the boundaries, but it's also the most brutally honest advice.Yes! Not only do the gays keep it real, but they also bring the best energy to your shows. I know you felt the love when you performed at G-A-Y & Heaven Nightclub in London back in 2023!That was one of my favorite performances ever! I ditched the mic and just started dancing. There was only like 150 people in the room and it was some of the craziest, loudest energy I've ever felt. I just wanted to whip my hair, do a kick, and leave! That's all I wanted to do. See on Instagram You've evolved so much over the past couple of years. Now, you're going to be performing in front of thousands of people nearly every night on your upcoming Miss Possessive Tour. That's pretty surreal! It's so crazy! I can't believe this is my job. Four years ago, I played my first ever show at The Moroccan Lounge in front of 100 people in LA. It was the size of a shoebox, like it's so small. I could see my grandma, my mom, and everybody that I knew. Now, we're performing three nights at the Kia Forum. It's the biggest dream of my life. It's insane! It's amazing seeing your dreams come true, but I'm dying to know what you're manifesting and what you'd love to do next.I always have things that I'm setting my sights on. I'm a very goal-driven person. Sometimes, I think I'm a little clairvoyant. I'm really good at manifesting! I would die to perform at the VMA's. That's something I've watched all my idols do for so many years. For some reason, that specific performance is something I've always wanted. My ideal performance is a perfect balance of dance, outfit, singing, and musical arrangement. When they're all balanced perfectly, that's my ideal performance. What about collaborations? Would you like to hit the studio with any of your idols? My dream is to write with SZA. She's one of the coolest and best writers ever. I love her. I think it'd be a mix of pop and R&B. I'd let her take the charge! I just want to always keep pushing my comfort zone. I never want to recycle and do the same things. As an artist, I want to be uncomfortable and shock myself sometimes.Let's manifest it now! Before I let you go, I'd love to see if you had any message you'd love to send to your dedicated LGBTQ+ fans?I love you guys so much. Y'all are my number ones. You know that as much as you guys ride for me, I ride for you. I feel very grateful to have you guys in my life and surrounding me.So Close to What is available everywhere now.

The cast of 'Masters of the Universe' is an LGBTQ+ dream, here's who they're playing
Between Red, White & Royal Blue star Nicholas Galitzine dropping thirst traps of his twink-to-twunk transformation, us taking a walk down memory lane to remind you which He-Man characters are the gayest, and now a cast list that is chock full of hot stars, we can safely say the Masters of the Universe film is definitely for the gays. Not only was the original He-Man cartoon so queer-coded its nearly laughable to watch it now (dont tell us you dont see the chemistry between He-Man and Skeletor!), but weve got Galitzine starring who has made a career out of playing gay characters and queer queens Sasheer Zamata and Alison Brie in lead roles too.But lets be honest, as much as we remember how campy the original cartoon was that the new live-action film is based on, we dont remember all of the characters. So who are all of these hot stars playing?Nicholas Galitzine as He-ManSee on InstagramNicholas Galitzine will be playing the titular Master of the Universe, Prince Adam AKA He-Man. Considering how many gay roles Galitzine has played and how queer-coded the OG cartoon was, were keeping our fingers crossed for a gay He-Man. But with the way Galitzine has been bulking up for this role, no matter what, it should be full of eye candy!Alison Brie as Evil-LynSee on InstagramBisexual icon Alison Brie has nabbed the role of Evil-Lyn, who is a supervillainess. As an evil witch, she uses her powers of darkness to help Skeletor as his second-in-commandSasheer Zamata as SuzieSee on InstagramQueer comedian and podcaster Sasheer Zamata is poised to play Suzie, a character not in the original cartoon or 80s movie. According to Mens Health the new film gives Prince Adam a different origin story that has him crash landing on Earth as a 10-year-old and is separated from his magical Power Sword. It looks like Suzie may be one of his friends on Earth before he returns to Eternia to regain his birthright as He-Man.Morena Baccarin as the SorceressSee on InstagramActress Morena Baccarin has been cast as The Sorceress of Grayskull, who uses her magic powers to watch over Castle Grayskull. In the cartoon series, the Sorceress also known as Teela-Na wears a campy bird headrest and winged cape, so were hoping this character leans Sapphic!Camila Mendes as TeelaSee on InstagramRiverdale star Camila Mendes is starring as Teela, daughter of the Sorceress, and a warrior goddess and the captain of the Royal Guard who helps He-Man in battle (though shes unaware that He-Man and Prince Adam are one and the same). Jared Leto as SkeletorSee on InstagramSkeletor is the main villain of the Master of the Universe franchise and is not only He-Mans constant foe, but the two have a very gay-coded adversarial relationship. Hopefully, Jared Leto can do a better job playing the over-dramatic, campy villain than he did playing Joker. Idris Elba as Man-at-ArmsSee on InstagramDreamboat Idris Elba will be playing Men-at-Arms, a crop-top armor-wearing, 70s porn state having, warrior who likes to take trips with Prince Adam. We cant wait to see Elba and Galitzine on screen together!Sam C. Wilson as Trap JawSee on InstagramSam C. Wilson has been cast as Trap Jaw, one of Skeletors main henchmen. Trap Jaw was transformed into a cyborg with a metal jaw and one robot arm after losing a fight with Skeletor.Jhannes Haukur Jhannesson as FistoSee on InstagramIcelandic Game of Thrones star Jhannes Haukur Jhannesson is set to play Fisto, a muscular, bearded warrior with a metal fist that can do some serious damage. But with a name like Fisto, we know what hes really doing with that hand!Kojo Attah as TriclopsSee on InstagramHunky actor Kojo Attah is playing Triclops, an inter-dimensional bounty hunter and tracker who was recruited by Skeletor to spy for him using his tri-optic visor that he got after an accident left him blind. Jon Xue Zhang as Ram ManSee on InstagramThe Gentlemen star Jon Xue Zhang has been cast as Ram Man, who inherited his familys ancient mystical armor that also him to ram his enemies. You can take that as you will. He started out working for Skeletor before switching sides and becoming a core member of the Masters of the Universe. Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat ManSee on InstagramProfessional strongman and Game of Thrones star Hafthor Bjornsson will be Goat Man, a minor villain of the franchise who wears goat horns and shows off his toned abs with a little half-shirt. Charlotte Riley as Queen MarlenaSee on InstagramThe stunning Charlotte Riley will star as Queen Marlena, one of the rulers of Eternia alongside her husband, King Randor, and the mother of Prince Adam (He-Man) and Princess Adora (who grows up to be She-Ra).James Purefoy as King RandorSee on InstagramA Knights Tale actor James Purefoy is starring as King Randor, the ruler of Eternia and Prince Adams father. Groups Helping LGBTQ Victims of Violence Could Face a Catastrophic Loss of Federal Funding
By Mel Leonor Barclay, Jasmine MithaniThis story was originally published by the 19th, a nonprofit news network. Emily Scherer for The 19th; Getty ImagesSubscribe nowOrganizations that provide services to LGBTQ victims of domestic and intimate partner violence expect much of the federal funding they rely on to dry up as the Trump administrations executive orders target the work they have been carrying out for years. Some received direct notices from the federal government to stop work that promotes what the administration is calling gender ideology extremism and to include disclaimers on their websites that the federal government doesnt support their mission.Federal grants make up significant shares of operating budgets for many domestic violence nonprofits, and losing that funding puts their continued existence at risk.Groups that focus specifically on LGBTQ victims are part of a broader network of federally funded nonprofits that provide life-saving counseling, housing and legal aid to people experiencing violence from spouses, partners or family members. Some nonprofits also train social workers, therapists and lawyers in how to work sensitively with LGBTQ victims of violence. The White House has promised to slash funding for programs that dont align with the administrations ideology on gender, race and immigration.Domestic violence groups and the broader network of gender-based violence nonprofits have been on high alert since a temporary federal freeze in late January, as The 19th reported this month. The vague language of President Donald Trumps executive orders illegal diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility activities; gender ideology extremism has left organizations scrambling to figure out if they stand to lose federal funding.Subscribe nowSome are trying to protect their funding by removing language or resources that they fear may be at odds with the executive orders. The people leading groups founded specifically to support LGBTQ people say that for them, there is no hiding: The executive orders specifically target the people they are focused on serving. Some groups are making an effort to kind of change the way they talk about their services and the populations they serve. Our organization literally has the words gay and lesbian in our IRS name were not fooling anybody. And obscuring what we do and who we serve doesnt help those services stay accessible, said Audacia Ray, the interim executive director of the New York City Anti-Violence Project, officially the New York City Gay And Lesbian Anti-Violence Project Inc., which supports LGBTQ and HIV-affected victims of violence.LGBTQ Americans, with the exception of gay men, are more likely to have experienced domestic violence, partner abuse or dating violence than cisgender and heterosexual people. Queer women are significantly more likely to have experienced intimate-partner violence in their lifetime than straight women, according to an analysis of federal survey data by the Human Rights Campaign.Transgender people are four times more likely to be victims of violent crime than cisgender people, according to research from the Williams Institute at UCLA. Fifty-four percent of respondents to the 2015 U.S. Trans Survey the most recent data available said they have experienced intimate partner violence, and 47 percent reported being sexually assaulted. Transgender people are also more likely to experience severe physical intimate partner violence than the average American.Nonprofits serving victims of violence have long relied on federal funding, especially since the Violence Against Women Act created specialized grant programs 30 years ago. They receive little support from private philanthropy: Most recent data from the Equitable Giving Lab shows about 0.1 percent of charitable giving in the United States goes toward LGBTQ causes, and less than 2 percent goes toward women and girls. The danger of this moment is that it becomes very nebulous to people how federal funding contributes to the basic social safety net. There arent donors. There isnt all this money, said the executive director of a regional nonprofit serving LGBTQ victims of violence that receives about 40 percent of its funding from the federal government. The organization helps offer shelter and direct cash assistance, among other services, to LGBTQ people fleeing violence. The executive director spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear that their organization would be targeted further by the Trump administration. When people are facing imminent threat of being murdered, and there are no resources to give people funding to flee that situation it is going to result in more death. Truly, I believe that.Subscribe nowThe need for targeted LGBTQ servicesNonprofits focused specifically on LGBTQ communities sprung up to meet the specific needs of this population, which experiences higher incidences of violence and also discrimination based on gender-identity and sexual orientation.Specialized resources for LGBTQ survivors are dearly needed: A 2017 survey of LGBTQ survivors who received services from the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs showed that 43 percent of LGBTQ intimate partner violence survivors were denied entry to a shelter; of those denied, a third were refused entry due to their gender identity.LGBTQ people are vulnerable to abuse related to their identity, including threats of outing that could cost them housing, jobs or other relationships. Queer survivors are often isolated from typical support systems like family who could help them in an abusive situation. Transgender people are more likely to be killed by intimate partner violence, and the risk is increased for people of color, especially Black trans women.Groups focused on LGBTQ survivors serve as a critical safety net for LGBTQ victims, often accepting referrals from national and local groups without tailored resources. The Hotline, a national nonprofit that supports victims of domestic violence, describes the fear of not receiving services as an obstacle to reaching safety that LGBTQ people might confront. It offers referrals to service providers focused on LGBTQ people the same providers that are now staring down the loss of federal funding.Given the executive orders, theres no universe in which some of the work doesnt take a hit. I feel very clear about that, said Ray of the New York City Anti-Violence Project. And at the same time, we have to be able to answer the phone and support our community, whos directly impacted by all this violence.NYCAVP runs a 24/7 hotline for victims of violence, as well as free long-term counseling, legal services and connections to support groups. About two-thirds of the organizations budget comes from a mix of federal, state and local government grants. Most of its funding comes from programs targeting underserved communities.Ray said that the New York City Anti-Violence Project, in addition to offering direct services to victims, including through its hotline, also spends resources advocating and advising lawmakers on legislation affecting LGBTQ people. For example, NYCAVP helped shape the 2013 reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, the first federal funding statute that banned discrimination based on actual or perceived gender identity and sexual orientation. My immediate thought was we will do what we do as long as we can, and were not preemptively laying people off or shutting anything down, Ray said.We have a couple different contingency plans around, What are the services that we need to prioritize and center, and how do we continue to do that as long as possible? The executive director who spoke on condition of anonymity said their organization connected with more than 600 LGBTQ people facing abuse and violence in the past year. Some came as referrals from domestic and intimate partner violence organizations that werent equipped to serve them, or who were working with a victim needing relocation to a state less hostile to LGBTQ people. Its kind of like an informal witness protection program, they said.Without federal funding, they said, their ability to help these victims will significantly shrink. How nonprofits are fighting backIn a lawsuit filed Thursday by Lambda Legal on behalf of nine nonprofits that receive federal funding, the plaintiffs argue that the Trump administrations executive orders, including the order calling for the end of federal funding for activities that promote gender ideology extremism, amount to an existential threat to transgender people. They argue the orders are unconstitutional because they violate the groups free speech, due process and equal protection rights. The executive orders force plaintiffs to silence their speech and viewpoints that are not only of great societal importance but also central to plaintiffs missions or forgo federal funding, the complaint reads. That choice is an impossible one.Among the plaintiffs suing Trump is FORGE, one of the only organizations in the country focused on supporting transgender people experiencing intimate partner violence. FORGE trains providers who assist transgender and nonbinary survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence and hate crimes. The 30-year-old organization also connects victims with wellness services.According to the case filing, 90 percent of FORGEs funding is derived from federal grants, the highest out of any listed plaintiff. It has received grants from a wide range of agencies including the Department of Justice, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the National Institutes of Health.Several other plaintiffs that received funds from HHS programs, according to the complaint, were sent notices in late January to immediately terminate, to the maximum extent, all programs, personnel, activities, or contracts promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion or, separately, gender ideology.Trans and nonbinary people are scared and hurting not only from the high levels of violence so many of us experience every day, but also because of the dehumanizing, erasing, and damaging impact of the Executive Orders. For the past 30 years, FORGE has been committed to serving trans survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and hate-fueled harm. We are not going anywhere, michael munson, executive director of FORGE, said in a statement. Conditioning federal funding on rejecting transgender identity and DEI not only harms trans people, but it also creates a world that is less safe and less free for us all.Subscribe nowDeleting language and resourcesThe National LGBTQ Institute on Intimate Partner Violence urged fellow providers to hold the line together and stand in solidarity with LGBTQ, immigrant and BIPOC survivors in an email obtained by The 19th. The missive explicitly called upon organizations to continue serving LGBTQ survivors, to not take down materials tailored to the queer community and to keep pronouns on public-facing materials. It also cited previous reporting from The 19th detailing how some groups removed mentions of LGBTQ people from their websites. For organizations that have removed LGBTQ materials, we encourage that these materials be restored, the statement read. We urge organizations to not cede our collective power as a movement and back down in our work to protect LGBTQ survivors. The group reminded organizations in its network that federal law the same law that the New York City Anti-Violence Center helped pass makes it illegal to discriminate based on actual or perceived gender identity or sexual orientation. These federal non-discrimination policies remain in place and give us power to protect transgender survivors in the work that we do, the organization said. The Los Angeles LGBT Center, where the institute is housed, declined to speak on the record, citing the current lawsuit.Several days later, Respect Together, the umbrella organization of the National Sexual Violence Resource Center and the Pennsylvania Coalition to Advance Respect, publicly apologized for removing resources for LGBTQ people from their websites.Federal and state funding accounts for the vast majority of our operational budget, and as a result, we acted too swiftly to the news from the current administration, the apology reads. We heard you, and recognize that this was the wrong choice, CEO Yolanda Edrington said in the statement. We are committed to rebuilding trust, learning from this experience, and ensuring that our actions align with our mission to support survivors of all communities, their allies, and advocates. The Hotline, which had deactivated a page on LGBTQ resources earlier this month, has now restored it. The organization did not respond to a request for comment on the restoration, but told The 19th earlier this month that it was reviewing its website to protect its federal funding.Even if groups commit to still serve all people in need, regardless of identity, removing resources adds friction. Visibility and ease of navigating resources when you are in need of services is important, said Tandra LaGrone, the CEO of In Our Own Voices, a nonprofit supporting LGBTQ people of color in upstate New York, which has received a grant from the Office on Violence Against Women. The erasure of information can lead victims to feel like they are at fault, LaGrone said.Ray said that its a big risk to not change their organizations public-facing content in anticipation of a potential loss of funding, but they think holding steady is the right thing to do. Backing down wont reduce violence, they said.I really believe that complying in advance of direct demands and being forced to change those programs is contributing to the overall violence against LGBT people, Ray said. That sort of advance compliance is extremely worrisome to me, because it shows that those orgs are concerned about the org as an institution more than theyre concerned about the community as a directly impacted population. If objective, nonpartisan, rigorous, LGBTQ-focused journalism is important to you, please consider making a tax-deductible donation through our fiscal sponsor, Resource Impact, by clicking this button:Donate to Uncloseted Media

'White Lotus' star Carrie Coon dishes on her 'open-minded marriage'
People are freaking out over their White Lotus crush Carrie Coon saying shes in an open marriage, although she says it was a misunderstanding. But was it?On a recent episode of the WTF With Marc Maron Podcast, the 44-year-old actress, who plays the career-obsessed Laurie Duffy on season 3 of White Lotus, opened up about her marriage to Tracy Letts and how she loves that the couple is able to talk about being attracted to other people without jealousy getting in the way, Entertainment Weekly reports. "That's the nice thing about a marriage where everything's on the table: you talk about everything," Coon told Maron. "We're not jealous people. Like, we don't have any of those hang-ups. So we never wanna be like, the police. You know? So it's nice to be in a relationship where we can always talk about, like, 'Who are you attracted to on set?In response to Marons surprise at her comments, she said, Its so fun. I love it. Tracy's the kind of person who notices every single woman on the street And he always tells me who he has a crush on. It's fun. It's interesting to know what your partner's into. I think it's titillating. Then, the podcast host asked, "But it doesn't ever go over the line?"We don't really like lines," Coon answered. "Lines are really boring. I mean, look, life is short. Finite. (@) If that wasnt enough for fans to start wondering if Coon and Letts have an open marriage, her feelings about monogamy certainly did.Monogamy is something we've imposed on ourselves. We were supposed to have babies and die when we were like 30. And that's not the way life is anymore," she explained. "So I think you have to stayyou have to kinda be open-minded about what engages you in the world and what sparks your imagination and where your passion is. And I think if you're willing to stay open to that, then you're living a more full life. And I don't think either one of us would wanna keep the other from living." The podcast episode went viral hours after it was released, when gay fan Tom Zohar posted a clip on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption, Finding out Carrie Coon and Tracy Letts have an open marriage has been a really great way to start my week.Word must have gotten around to Coon, who took to social media to set the record straight. "Settle down, internet," she wrote on X. "I said 'open-minded' not open.'" (@) Zohar responded comically by writing, "LMAOOO Carrie is really sending us all to horny jail."The Gilded Age star may have never used the words open marriage, but she was openly critical of monogamy, talked about the lack of jealousy in her marriage, and called lines you dont cross in a marriage really boring, so its understandable that some fans got their hopes up that even though Coon is married, they might still have a chance!

Michigan representative introduces resolution to overturn same-sex marriage
Michigan State Rep. Josh Schriver, R-Oxford, has introduced a resolution calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.Michigan now joins Idaho, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota in creating resolutions looking to overturn same-sex marriage in the United States.House Resolution 28 is co-sponsored by the following Republican representatives Joseph Fox (District 101), Gregory Alexander (District 98), Jason Woolford (District 50), James DeSana (District 29) and Steve Carra (District 36).At a press conference Tuesday, where he did not take questions and instead directed reporters to contact his office, Schriver defended the resolution. He claimed Obergefell v. Hodges has defaced the definition of marriage and increased persecution of Christians.Has Obergefell v. Hodges not widened the portal for gays, queers, transsexuals, polygamists, minor-attracted persons and other perverts to advance attacks on our children? Schriver said.Schriver also said children of same-sex couples face greater challenges in education, employment and self-sufficiency compared to those raised by a mother and father. This statement contradicts the results of numerous studies, which have found children of same-sex couples fare as well, if not better, than those raised by opposite-sex parents. In response to Schrivers resolution, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released a video statement, calling marriage equality a non-negotiable. @biggretchwhitmer Right now, Republicans in the Michigan legislature are trying to get the Supreme Court to overturn marriage equality. Heres my response to that: hell no. original sound BigGretchWhitmer Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who is openly lesbian, also released a video statement.Upending this constitutional right hurts so many and helps absolutely no one, Nessel said. It doesnt make your eggs cheaper. It doesnt create more jobs. It doesnt make housing more affordable. It doesnt protect your child from an active shooter in school.Nessel, who has been married to her wife since 2015, closed her video saying, A decade after we won the fight for equality, Im not giving up the fight to maintain it, and Im sure as hell not giving up this ring.Equality Michigan (EQMI) released a statement condemning the resolution. This resolution is nothing more than cruel political theater and a bigoted attempt to stir up fear and division at the expense of real families, said Erin Knott, executive director of Equality Michigan.Marriage equality has been the law of the land for nearly a decade, and the vast majority of Americans support it. But make no mistake this isnt just about marriage. Its part of a broader agenda to strip LGBTQ+ people of their fundamental rights. The post Michigan representative introduces resolution to overturn same-sex marriage appeared first on News Is Out.

Joyful resistance: What the AIDS crisis teaches us about fighting the Trump administration now
Right now, the world can feel like a joyless place for LGBTQ+ people, but queer joy is not only possible, it' s an act of resistance.President Donald Trumps systematic attack on the rights of LGBTQ+ people has made the world a scary place to live in. He has ended federal funding for gender-affirming care, denied LGBTQ+ people access to the HIV prevention medication PrEP, reinstated a ban on trans people serving in the military, and signed the anti-trans No Men in Womens Sports executive order. It would be easy to fall into despair and hopelessness, but this is not the first time our community has felt this kind of existential dread and fear for our future. The queer community has fought back and won before, and we can and will do it again. To empower ourselves in the present, it's essential to understand our past. In 1981, doctors started identifying the disease that would later become known as HIV/AIDS in gay men in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City. By 1986, more than 11,000 people had died from AIDS-related complications in the United States, and yet rampant homophobia led to a lack of social services, inaction by the government former President Ronald Reagan didnt even say the word AIDS until 1985 and little scientific advancement. During the height of the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 90s, people took to the streets en masse, marching and participating in nonviolent direct action and acts of civil disobedience to demand structural change and fight against the inexcusable neglect of the deaths of thousands within the queer community. And while the fight to create real change is long, arduous, and often exhausting, weve won before by embracing and fighting for queer joy as much as queer rights. As Dan Savage, Savage Love writer, LGBTQ+ activist, and co-creator of the It Gets Better Project, posted on Instagram in the wake of the 2024 election, During the darkest days of the AIDS crisis, we buried our friends in the morning, we protested in the afternoon, and we danced all night. The dance kept us in the fight because it was the dance we were fighting for. It didnt look like we were going to win then and we did. It doesnt feel like were going to win now but we could. Keep fighting, keep dancing."The movement to fight back against a system that was failing queer people across the country was led by the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), a grassroots activist coalition born out of the collective anger at the social and governmental neglect of people with AIDS and the 1986 U.S. Supreme Court case that upheld the constitutionality of anti-sodomy laws. ACT UP organized marches, stunningly brave acts of civil disobedience, and worked to destigmatize queer sex, but also knew that building community, celebrating their sexuality, and finding moments of happiness were also crucial.Growing up in the 80s and 90s in the San Francisco Bay Area with an out-lesbian mother meant that the AIDS crisis was ever present in my childhood.I watched my mother protest in the streets, even as she took care of her gay friends who were dying and had been abandoned by their families. I went to countless funerals. The first memorial service I ever attended was for my godmothers brother, who died of AIDS-related complications. I was five or six years old, and I vividly remember helping to plant a rose bush in her garden, where we spread his ashes while the adults around me sobbed. As an activist, my mother was part of an affinity group a small group of people who support each other during demonstrations and protests that worked closely with other groups, including an affinity group comprised of gay men. Shockingly, all twelve of them had passed away by the time the early 90s rolled around.I watched as she mourned these men and saw her devastation at losing her best friend to the disease. I also bore witness to her planning protests, including the time she and other activists shut down the Golden Gate Bridge in an attempt to raise awareness of the crisis and demand the government step in to alleviate the suffering. But I also remember that even though death and tragedy became an ever-present fact of life, my mother and her queer friends found ways to be joyful, and this joy allowed them to keep fighting back even amid all the grief. There was joy and gathering together in communal spaces that was not just important but necessary for survival, ACT UP activist Sean Strub told PRIDE. People were still making art, falling in love, breaking up, pursuing careers, raising families, etc., despite also experiencing profound loss and having to take care of each other as we were dying. Strub co-chaired ACT UPs fundraising committee, was the first openly HIV+ person to run for Congress, founded both POZ Magazine which chronicles the lives of people with HIV/AIDS and the Sero Project which focuses on ending the criminal prosecution of people with HIV and authored the book Body Counts: A Memoir of Politics, Sex, AIDS, and Survival. Today, even as our government is becoming more repressive and police forces across the country are becoming more violent toward even nonviolent protesters, its important to remember that having fun, celebrating your sexuality, and finding moments of queer joy isnt just a way to keep your spirits up, but is also an act of rebellion all on its own. In every resistance movement, even under the most awful oppression, even in refugee camps and prisons, there are aspects of joy, Strub said. I'll bet someone has studied this in Vichy France and elsewhere. At POZ we once sponsored a POZ comedy night and it was a huge success. Some were appalled: What's funny about AIDS? But keeping our sense of humor, finding love, companionship, creating art and music and celebration are a necessary fuel to drive the resistance, to ultimately overcome.Trumps attack on the rights of the LGBTQ+ community has been so disheartening to witness that it would be easy to lose faith that anything can be done. But as you rally to fight back, its important to remember that real change often takes years, not months, so you have to find ways to keep your hope alive and keep fighting. If youre not in the streets today; If youre not dedicating a significant portion of your energy, time, and resources to combating whats going on; how much worse would it have to get for you to do so?" Strub asked. "We are in wartime and last November we lost, badly, the biggest battle to date. Millions of lives are at stake, the community we've created and the rights we've fought for and gained are at tremendous risk. Activism is incredibly rewarding but can also be exhausting, which is why ACT UP activist Anne-christine dAdesky, who also co-founded the direct action group the Lesbian Avengers, is about to host a cabaret at her house for her birthday because we need to dance together.Fun has to be part of the formula for me because it will continue to draw people, and it continues to bond us, said dAdesky, who helped to organize the very first Dyke March and has had a storied career as an award-winning journalist for publications like the Village Voice, The Advocate, Out, launched HIV Plus Magazine, and has dedicated much of her recent activism to combating Project 2025.She called the current political climate both a horrible time and an incredible time in the sense that repression forces people to survive, remarking that ACT UP was started because people were fighting for their survival and what she called Trump 2.0 is creating a similar situation today that is giving people a common cause to fight for. dAdesky said that turning up for national protests is important because we need the numbers out on the street to make public opposition to this regime visible, but you can make an even bigger impact at a local level through mutual aid or doing things like speaking to your representatives in person. The more that happens, the more effective our resistance, and the more they will feel that theyre part of a movement, dAdesky said. That theyre not isolated at home. That theyre not sitting there at home not knowing what to do or how to plug in.Jordan Peimer, an ACT UP Los Angeles activist and the co-creator of ACT UP LAs oral history project, said that on top of doing the important work of organizing and protesting, building community, celebrating together, and even flirting with other protestors and having sex was part of what kept members of the group going. There were far too many funerals, and there were far too many protests. Sometimes all you could do was dance, he said.Peimer who got more involved in the movement in 1988 after participating in an overnight vigil at LA County General Hospital where he saw firsthand how terribly AIDS patients were being treated said activists of the past benefited from having to meet up face-to-face to organize, protest, and party together, and cautioned that sitting behind a computer screen is demoralizing.Although you may be feeling grief, existential terror, and frustration, todays queer activists need to use queer joy as a weapon of resistance so we have the emotional energy to fight another day. Despite setbacks and even major losses, the protest movements of the past have taught us that real change is possible.I get it, it is way easier to click on a computer screen but it doesn't feed your queer soul, he explained. The Trans community just scored a partial victory in LA against the Children's Hospital by coming together to protest their lack of gender-affirming care when Children's Hospital LA reversed their recently enacted restrictions on gender-affirming care. That would not have happened if people stayed at home. It wouldn't have happened for me as seriously if I hadn't spent the night at the Los Angeles County General Hospital Vigil. Show up for your community: you'll be less tired and defeated, and who knows, you might get laid!
