WWW.PRIDE.COMQueer Joy Alert: Gay TikTok star rallies his followers to feed the hungryQueer joy is a radical act, so join us each week for more stories that uplift, resist, and shine. For more stories on Queer Joy, click here.Facing empty shelves and worrying about how they were going to feed their community, a Tennessee food pantry was shocked when they found themselves flooded with donations from an unexpected source: TikTok. A week ago, Knox Pride, a LGBTQ+ nonprofit resource center, put out a call on Instagram for donations because their food pantry was almost empty with no way to fill it after their funding was slashed. Luckily, one queer TikTok star saw the post and jumped into action.Social media can feel like a vapid, superficial way to spend your time, but sometimes these apps that have taken over our lives are used to make real positive change in the world.Thats true for Matthew Bounds, who is changing lives with his TikTok channel, one charity at a time. Better known as Your Barefoot Neighbor, the 42-year-old gay social media influencer creates simple, easy comfort food recipes for his 1.8 million followers, but on top of his cozy meals, Bound has managed to galvanize his fans, over and over again, to donate to local charities. While killing time waiting in line by scrolling on his phone, Bounds saw Knox Prides plea for donations and knew he had to act fast. I knew they had lost their funding. I knew things were tight for them. I had seen their updates on that, but that post right there just really hit me, he told PRIDE.Bounds rushed home and recorded a quick TikTok asking his followers to help him fulfill their Amazon Wishlist and stock their pantry shelves, after he had donated a handful of things himself. History has shown that the Barefoot Neighborhood does not play when it comes to stuff like this, and yall go crazy hard, crazy fast, Bounds said in the video.@yourbarefootneighbor#barefootneighborhoodAsking his followers he has approximately 3.5 million across all platforms to help out nonprofit organizations in desperate need of donations is nothing new, but normally, Bounds carefully plans out any fundraisers he does so when the TikTok video asking for help for Knox Pride didnt get as many views as he was hoping, he worried that very few people would order anything off of the nonprofits Wishlist. But the next morning, he woke up to a message from Knox Prides executive director, John Camp, with photos of the trucks full of Amazon packages streaming in. This allowed them to fully stock their food pantry within 24 hours of the video going live.Theyve never let me down, Bound said of his followers. They love a good call, they love to rally and help people. So, I didnt have any doubt that they would come through, I think I was surprised at how big they came through.Donations continued to flood in over the next week, and soon, Knox Pride had enough food to stock the pantry multiple times over. The fundraiser was so successful that they also received so many monetary donations that they were able to pay their rent through July, and volunteers started showing up in person. They even got enough truckloads of food delivered that Knox Pride was able to reach out to other local resource centers and help them stock their food pantries as well. Its a 180 at the center, Bounds said. Not only was it the tangible physical donations, but you know, just a lot of people who may have kind of forgotten they were there or I even got comments from people who live in Knoxville and said they were unaware of Knox Pride and then they saw my video, so now they are donating and theyre showing up to volunteer.@yourbarefootneighborAn update for the #barefootneighborhood Knox Pride provides food to between 75 and 100 people every day at their food pantry so having empty shelves would have been devastating to the community. After the donations started streaming in, Bound began getting DMs from people who were grateful he had stepped up. I had someone DM me and he said hes a 55-year-old gay man whos unhoused and the day I posted that video, he had gone there earlier that day and said they fed him with literally some of the last things on the shelves, Bounds recalled. He said, I laid down last night and I didnt know where my next meal was going to be coming from because they were out. And he said, I woke up this morning and saw the video and the updates and everything. Im going to eat today because of your followers, which was really incredible.Bounds, who has published one cookbook and has a second one on the way in 2026, has made a name for himself by making easily accessible, comforting southern classics, but he has also built community outreach and fundraising into his platform since the very beginning. In fact, earlier this month, Bounds, who is a Gulfport, Mississippi native, rallied his followers to support a food drive for Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, and was able to completely stock the shelves of their food pantry in less than two weeks. My being gay, and then a lot of my audience is part of the LGBTQIA community, and allies and things like that. I think theres almost the spirit of were here, were queer, well handle it. I think that really rallies us a lot, too. You know, so many people just love to be a part of an inclusive, diverse community that is so committed to helping folks. The vibe of the community Bounds has created is one that loves good food and is devoted to helping their community, but he thinks people need the positivity in their lives more now than ever before. Theres so much negativity and awful news, and I dont know about you, but I feel really hopeless a lot of days, Bound admitted. I think theres so many people that just want a little win, and if I can say, Hey, heres an Amazon Wishlist, order something off of it, well feed someone today, thats a way for someone to chip in and make the world a little bit better and have a little control over it for a minute. Were not victims of it, were contributing to some sort of solution."0 Comments 0 Shares 62 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMHow one gay kiss on 'Dawson's Creek' changed television foreverPicture it: May 24, 2000. The millennium had just dawned, Britney Spears was still a girl, not yet a woman, and the world of teen television was about to serve us an iconic queer pop culture moment we'd never forget.Dawson's Creek, notorious for angsty teens discussing existential dilemmas with a vocabulary beyond their years, showed the first passionate kiss between two men on primetime network television.Sign up for the PRIDE.com Newsletter to get a candid take on whats fresh and fun in LGBTQ+ culture this week!Jack McPhee, the charming, gay heartthrob played by Kerr Smith, made history when he shared a heartfelt and unabashed kiss with Ethan, portrayed by Adam Kaufman. The brief scene was filled with courage and vulnerability, full of real and raw energy. For many queer teens watching, it was the first time we'd seen ourselves genuinely reflected, without caricature or comedic sidekick status, in a scene that mirrored our deepest hopes and fears. Jack wasn't comic relief; he wasn't a cautionary tale. He was a teenage boy navigating love, rejection, and self-discovery in the season finale, just like every other character on the show.Of course, the Creek was a primetime soap that didn't entirely reflect the real world. In a 2001 Entertainment Weekly article, Kerr Smith admitted that, while proud of helping to "break TV taboos," he drew the line at same-sex snogging once a year. "That's as far as I'm going to take it," Smith said, "I don't think teenagers need to see two guys kissing on a weekly basis." But that kiss proved that queer teen romance deserved space, visibility, and validation on mainstream television. From that moment forward, the landscape shifted. TV execs realized queer stories weren't just groundbreakingthey were necessary. That brief kiss opened the closet doors of queer teen storylines we see today.Unlike Dawson's Creek, Ryan Murphy's Glee presented queer romance with exuberance, complete with show-stopping musical numbers and dazzling theatrically. However, the essence of that groundbreaking moment in the fictional Massachusetts town has been woven into every storyline since then. Netflix's hit series, Heartstopper, captured the innocence of first love. The power of Jack's kiss has even rippled through genres beyond teen drama. Most recently, in HBO's gritty, post-apocalyptic series, The Last of Us, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina's (Isabella Merced) relationship is central to the second season's storyline as showcased in the video game. Ellie's moment of romance amid a desolate world still shared that Dawson's Creek essence, full of vulnerability and unflinching honesty. With one groundbreaking scene, Dawson's Creek established a legacy that enabled queer teen love stories to flourish boldly in mainstream media. But even more importantly, the show taught us that queer teens deserve to see their experiences woven seamlessly into the fabric of pop culture.Today's viewers, steeped and versed in diverse queer representation, might see Jack and Ethan's kiss as tame, perhaps even quaint, by compasrsion. But let's never underestimate the power of the "first." That kiss permitted countless other stories to bloom.0 Comments 0 Shares 55 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMTrans athlete Schuyler Bailar opens WorldPride with a funny and heartwarming speechAuthor and athlete Schuyler Bailar has been making history for years. In college, he became the first out trans man to compete in a D1 sport while swimming for Harvard, and now he has another accolade under his belt: He kicked off Trans World Pride with a funny and heartwarming keynote speech. More than two million people from around the world are expected to visit Washington, DC for the WorldPride celebration, and this week, the huge event launched with a Trans Pride event. Throughout the three-week-long event, there will be concerts, performances, parties, protests, advocacy efforts, a huge Pride parade, and a closing weekend festival. The sprawling celebration will also have diverse breakout events for Black Pride, Latinx Pride, and API Pride, and big stars are headlining, with concerts from Shakira, Cynthia Erivo, Rene Rapp, and Doechii likely to draw huge crowds. Bailars funny and touching keynote speech told the story of his experience of coming out as trans to his traditional Korean American family, and how that impacted him. The author of He/She/They talked about how scared he was to tell his Catholic grandmother about his transition because she had always made it very clear to Bailar what her expectations were of him as a granddaughter. She was always asking me like, When are you going to bring home a nice Korean boy? And I was always like, Well, little did she know its going to be me, Bailar joked during his speech, where his father was in the audience. Trans Pride being the starting place for WorldPride seems fitting at a time when the transgender community is under attack by the Trump administration and conservative politicians across the country. Bailars speech about how he came out to his very traditional immigrant family not only was funny and sweet, but charted a clear path forward for young people who are likely scared to come out in the current political climate.See on InstagramBailar ended up telling his grandmother that he is trans in a letter that explained everything and ended with, Grandmother, Im telling you this because I love you, because I respect you, and because I desperately hope that you will stay in my life.He was pessimistic that the letter would get through to her, but he ended up reading the letter out loud to his grandparents, and his grandfather clapped when he was done and commented that his grandson had come out of the closet.I had nothing to say, I didnt know he knew the words, coming out of the closet,' and he goes, Oh, congratulations, Bailar said to laughter from the audience. But he was still petrified to hear his grandmothers reaction. Luckily for him, her response was simple, but effective: I know. When coming out to all of his family members, Bailar faced hurdles and hiccups along the way, but ultimately got the love and support that everyone in the LGBTQ+ community hopes for.0 Comments 0 Shares 54 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMIs Gabby Windey trying to break us? Her steamy IG pics push us to the brinkLets be very clear. We love Gabby Windey for her mind. The Bachelor star breakout turned Traitor's champ, turned lesbian thought leader via her podcast Long Winded, is one of the funniest, brightest, and sharpest iconoclasts in the lesbian zeitgeist right now.Yes, we live for her and we live for her love story with her husband Robby Hoffman. Everything about their romance and wedding is the exact kind of wholesome sapphic chaos that makes us believe in love and root for their happily ever after. Also, her commentary on feminism, sex, the failings of men, and just her general contrarian takes on, well, everything is exactly the kind of charmingly disruptive and thought-provoking discourse that we crave. She is a true, unapologetic original. So when we say we are looking respectfully, we mean it. But my God, Gabby. Are you actually trying to break us and send us into a sapphic spiral so deep, so profound, so very thirsty, that we will never return but rather collapse under the gravitational weight of our longing like a dying star of sapphic yearning?Because that is what is going to happen if she keeps posting photos like this on main. That being said, we highly recommend you keep scrolling, you know, in the name of sapphic science.Respectfully.See on InstagramNoodles and whale tail? WWW.PRIDE.COMI tried penis filler heres what I wish I knew firstIve never had a problem with what Im working with below the belt, but when I had an opportunity to try a girth enhancement with Chris Bustamante through Lushful Aesthetics, I couldnt turn down the opportunity to see what it was all about.Bustamante, more affectionately and popularly known as InjectorChris, offers a range of cosmetic enhancements through Lushful Aesthetics. These include the girth enhancement I experienced, a ScroFill for the testicles he refers to as the breast implants for men, and the wildly popular HoleTox made to help bottoms be more relaxed.Procedures like these, of course, have their own share of questions and stigmas, many of which I also had before I went in. Things like, Do I really need this? How bad does it hurt? Can I still pee? and Is this only for gay men? pop up for everyone, but trust me, its not that bad.Keep reading to hear more about my experience, what to expect of the procedure, and why this kind of sexual enhancement is suitable for straight and gay men alike. What I thought before (and why I did it anyway)Before I went in, I thought I was going to regret the procedure, but Bustamante calmed my nerves immediately.Everything is reversible, he said. So I do tell people that, if you feel like this just isnt for you, we can totally reverse it. No harm, no foul. That said, he also admitted I wouldnt like him for the first week, but that was completely normal. Prepare for week one to be questioning what you did, he warned. I usually expect a panicked text message around day three, then four days later they thank me and tell me the panic is gone.Despite my apprehension, I wanted to try this out for the experience itself. Ive never had any other type of cosmetic enhancementno Botox, no fillers, no nothingand figured that, even though its a pretty main part of my body, if something got botched, it was still easier to hide.Spoiler alert: The first few days, I felt like I was carrying a monster. I have since calmed down. But lets get down to one of the main questions that I and everybody else ask:Does it hurt?Short answer: no.Longer answer: sort of. The no revolves around the procedure itself. As Bustamante told me beforehand, The procedure itself is entirely pain-free. Its more of an awareness that Im down there, but theres no pain. The awarenessand the sort of of the longer answerstarts with a little shot of Trimex in the shaft to get things going. If youre unaware of what that is, its an injectable medication used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. When I say a little shot, I mean it, too. Its not enough to get you fully erect, but its enough to let Bustamante get a visual for what hes working with. The Trimex shot doesnt feel great, but the only pain involved is the nerve blocker shot. This gets inserted at the base of the shaft, and its similar to a Novocain shot when you go to the dentist. It hurts like hell while its getting injected, but then everything goes numb. After administering the nerve blocker shot, Bustamante applies additional numbing cream to the area while preparing the syringes. The procedure wasshockingly chillDuring the actual procedure, Bustamante supplies you with laughing gas to breathe while hes injecting you. While the appointment itself lasts about an hour, most of that time is spent discussing what to expect, including bruising, swelling, and the initial reaction of what did I just do to myself? The actual injections only take about 10 minutes, and youre set. Bustamante admitted that he has two separate playlistsone for his gay clientele (think Chappell Roan and Taylor Swift) and the other for the straight guys, usually leaning on The Killers because all straight men love The Killers. He also says that, though he gained popularity with HoleTox, the influx of penis patients, including straight men, have made penises his primary treatment. How much is injected into you?The amount of dermal filler used depends on the size your penis already is. Usually, Bustamante recommends starting with 15 shots (which he gave me), but you can do more or less depending on the size your penis is when you start. Its also important to note that there are no injections in the head of your penis. Additionally, this procedure only impacts your girth, not the overall length of your penis. It does help you be a little longer when flaccid, but not when erect. On average, patients can expect to see an increase in girth between one to two extra inches.Bustamante stresses the importance of it looking pretty, as well. Although hes not the only doctor out there doing this, straight men tend to think big and focus on the whole penis being girthy. Bustamante wants a more natural look, and he doesnt want your head to be small in comparison to the rest of the shaft. To combat this, he puts the bulk of the injections down at the base of the penis, then slowly works his way up. This allows for a more natural shape that genuinely doesnt make anything look malformed. However, there was one question I had going in that all of my friends also asked meCan I still pee?Good news: Yes!The injections only go on the sides of your penis. Nothing on the top, the bottom, or the head. As Bustamante explained before I started, Theres no effect on your bladder or your urethra. Its just a weird empty feeling, but it doesnt change your ability to pee. What I will say is peeing while my penis was still numb was an experience. I had to go pretty soon after the appointment, and was glad hed explained there would be a difference in my heads, meaning my brain expected a feeling that my penis didnt deliver. Although it didnt affect my ability to pee, while it was still numb, it did impact my ability to know when I was actually done. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but that did result in a little "accident" after I put my pants back on.What can I expect after? How long does this take to heal? Not only is Bustamante incredibly knowledgeable, but hes also really personable and prefers you to over-ask questions rather than assume something is okay when its not. As noted, he usually expects a panicked text message at some point, but stresses that you will likely see bruising and swelling, especially in the days immediately following. The morning after I woke up, I would have sent a panicked message if he hadnt gone over what to expect with me. The bruising was a bit of a shock, and the swelling only happened in certain areas and made my penis look strange. That has all resolved as of this writing, and I have experienced no complications from the procedure whatsoever. As for healing time, Bustamante advises expecting to be at 90% by week three, then 100% by week six. Starting on day three, you also need to massage the penis for a minimum of 15 minutes per day for three weeks with a method they demonstrate for you to help the filler settle.Lets talk about sex. When can I have it again?A significant question, of course, is around sex. Gay or straight, its likely youre not going to undergo this procedure only to share the results with yourself, but for health and healing purposes, you should wait for at least a week and a half or so before any type of sex, including oral. Most people who have partners are having sex about 10 to 14 days after, Bustamante said. Single people tend to wait about three weeks.Although theres a wait time to have a sexual partner, the same does not apply to yourself. For the first three days following the procedure, you are not allowed to masturbate, and you also are not supposed to go into hot tubs, pools, or submerge yourself in water to help prevent any infections. After that, feel free to play around with it and see how the new you feels. How long does this filler last? The good news here is that the filler lasts remarkably long, making the investment (which well discuss) worthwhile. You can always go in for touch-ups anytime you want, but you can also expect it to take two to three years before youre fully back to your natural self. The filler contains a mixture of a hyaluronic acid-based and a firmer calcium-based. Most fillers only use one type of filler, and this mixture makes penis enhancement more unique because no other filler looks and feels as natural on its own.How much will this cost me?This is definitely a cosmetic investment, and for the penis enhancement especially, you can expect to hit a big dent in your wallet. The first five syringes cost $4,000. An additional five syringes come out to $700 per syringe. If you have over 10 syringes, the cost of each additional syringe from there is $600. The 15 recommended syringes I did, then, costs about $10,500.Its also important to note that to receive the discounted pricing on the additional syringes, you must use them simultaneously. That means, if you did five on one day, came back for another five a few days later, and then finished off the 15 a few days after that, it would cost you $12,000 instead. They also offer financing options, so be sure to discuss with them whats best for you.Sowould I do it again? At the moment, he and I are still getting to know each other down there. As of this writing, I havent crossed the 10-day restriction on sex, but can confidently report back no issues thus far. Bustamantes professionalism from start to finish is also a huge selling point for me. I never felt uncomfortable, and its more than evident that he really knows what hes doing and deserves the recognition hes earned for his work. Most importantly, this procedure offers the individual who undertakes it a choice and a sense of empowerment. It might not be the choice for everyone, but those who are curious about it and can afford it should give it a go.I know I will again.Still have questions? WWW.PRIDE.COM8 chaotic things we learned about Kristen Stewart's 'Chronology of Water' after a wild CannesKristen Stewart has been making a big splash at this years Cannes Film Festival with the premiere of her directorial debut, The Chronology of Water. Shes spoken about the film and her desire to make it many times over the years, but now that its done (sort of), Stewart has been sharing far more about the chaotic journey she took to get here.Heres what we know!1. Its based on Lidia Yuknavitchs memoir.Imogen Poots stars as Yuknavitch, a "lifelong swimmer turned artist." The memoir takes a hard look at gender, sexuality, violence, grief, and addiction through a non-linear lens, with Stewarts film promising to do the same, though allegedly taking major deviations from the source material."Its just about how the things that happen to us live in our bodies and how we excavate, recreate, reframe things in order to survive," she told Vulture. "And also to define ourselves."2. Stewart herself has a hard time describing the film.If the description above sounds vague and broad all at once, its because the story itself encompasses so much."People say, 'Whats the movie about?' and Im like, 'Oh fuck, I dont know life?'" Stewart said while speaking at a Breaking Through the Lens event. "Its about being in love. Its about losing people. Its about your parents fucking you up. Its about writing. Its about making art. Its about how memory works. Its about the ocean. Its about the body. Its about hating the body. Its about loving the body. Its about desire. And its also just this vibe."3. She sent Fiona Apple a letter asking to use her music.Stewart has mentioned a few times now that she was so desperate to use Fiona Apples songs in her movie that she wrote her a letter despite the two having never met."I think I said, 'Whats yours is mine now,'" she recalled during her interview with Vulture. "Like, 'I know that these are your songs, but theyre fucking mine. They belong to me, they really belong to this movie, and can we please show that?'"4. It took her eight years to get it made.See on InstagramKStew fans have been listening to her talk about The Chronology of Water for nearly a decade now. She was determined to make this her directorial debut, even threatening to stop acting until she was able to make it happen.5. She was working on it up until five minutes before the premiere.Stewart told the Cannes audience that she finished the movie "five minutes before" but even that isnt quite the truth. She later told Vulture that they werent merely tweaking edits, but were and are actually still working on completing the film.6. She says Imogen Poots has "Big Tit Energy."Asked why she cast Poots in the lead rather than tackling the role herself, Stewart replied, "She doesnt have big tits or anything, but she seems like she does.""She has Big Tit Energy. Its like Big Dick Energy she has BTE," she continued. "I was like, I just feel like you have these big tits and you just have to play this part."7. She got tattoos to commemorate her experience on the film.Stewart has mentioned two tattoos she got related to the film one on her arm that says "Why," and one on her thigh that says "MINE.""The coolest song in the movie is when she comes on her hand, smells it, wipes it on her fucking bicep, and goes, 'I didnt know a girl body could do that. Shoot come," she explained. "And then this song comes on and it goes, 'Mine, mine, mine, mine.' And its just fucking mine."8. Shes likened the films pacing to that of a female orgasm.Forget the "three-act success story" that film audiences are accustomed to, Stewart says. The Chronology of Water currently has a run time of 2 hours and 8 minutes, because "its a serious fucking movie" that she believes deserves to take up that space."Its like a female orgasm. Its like, 'Almost, almost, almost. Stick with me, stick with me, stick with me!'" she said, adding, "I dont think the movie is long."As for when the rest of us will finally get to see Stewart's long-awaited directorial debut, that has yet to be determined. But we've waited eight years already we can wait a little longer.0 Comments 0 Shares 58 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PROPUBLICA.ORGThe Invasion Invention: The Far Rights Long Legal Battle to Make Immigrants the Enemyby Molly Redden ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published. When top Trump adviser Stephen Miller threatened on May 9 that the administration is actively looking at suspending habeas corpus in response to an invasion from undocumented immigrants, he was operating on a fringe legal theory that a right-wing faction has been working to legitimize for more than a decade. The Constitution is clear and that of course is the supreme law of the land that the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus can be suspended in a time of invasion, Miller said earlier this month in response to a question about Trumps threat to suspend habeas corpus, the legal right of a prisoner to challenge their detention. Days after Millers remarks, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem issued the same warning when a member of a House panel asked her if the number of illegal border crossings meets the threshold for suspending the right. Im not a constitutional lawyer, Noem said. But I believe it does.Hard-liners have referred to immigrants as invaders as long as the U.S. has had immigration. By 2022, invasion rhetoric, which had previously been relegated to white nationalist circles, had become such a staple of Republican campaign ads that most of the public agreed an invasion of the U.S. via the southern border was underway. Now, however, the claim that the U.S. is under invasion has become the legal linchpin of President Donald Trumps sweeping anti-immigrant campaign. The claim is Trumps central justification for invoking the Alien Enemies Act to deport roughly 140 Venezuelans to CECOT, the Salvadoran megaprison, without due process. (The administration cited different legal authority for the remaining deportees.) The Trump administration contends they are members of a gang, Tren de Aragua, that Venezuelan President Nicols Maduro is directing to infiltrate and operate in the United States. Lawyers and families of many of the deportees have presented evidence the prisoners are not even members of Tren de Aragua. The contention is also the throughline of Trumps day one executive order Protecting the American People Against Invasion. That document calls for the expansion of immigration removal proceedings without court hearings and for legal attacks against sanctuary jurisdictions, places that refuse to commit local resources to immigration enforcement. So far, no court has bought the idea that the U.S. is truly under invasion, as defined by the Constitution or the Alien Enemies Act, on the handful of occasions the government has used the argument to justify supercharged immigration enforcement. Four federal judges, including one Trump appointee, have said the situation Trump describes fails to meet the definition of an invasion. Tren de Aragua may well be engaged in narcotics trafficking, but that is a criminal matter, not an invasion or predatory incursion, U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein wrote. Indeed, Trumps own intelligence agencies found that Maduro is not directing the gang. The Supreme Court has not ruled on the question but froze any more deportations without due process on May 16.The Trump legal push has been in the works for years. After Trump left the White House, two of his loyalists, former Homeland Security official Ken Cuccinelli and his now-two-time budget chief Russell Vought, quietly built a consensus for the invasion legal theory among state Republican officials and ultimately helped persuade Texas to give it a test run in court. Former Homeland Security official Ken Cuccinelli, first image, and President Donald Trumps two-time budget chief Russell Vought (Bloomberg and Tom Williams/Getty Images) Most legal scholars reject the idea that the wave of undocumented immigration fits the original definition of what an invasion is, but they worry nonetheless. When U.S. District Judge Stephanie L. Haines, a Trump appointee, issued a preliminary ruling earlier this month that allowed Trump to invoke the Alien Enemies Act, she did not label immigrants invaders. Instead, she proposed that Tren de Aragua was the modern equivalent of a pirate or a robber. If the Supreme Court ultimately takes up the invasion question, a ruling like Haines offers a blueprint for sidestepping the issue while giving Trump what he wants, or for embracing the invasion theory wholesale, legal scholars said. All this really comes down to the issue of whether the United States Supreme Court is going to allow a president to behave essentially as an autocratic dictator if hes prepared to make entirely fictitious factual declarations that trigger monarchical power, said Frank Bowman, a legal historian and professor emeritus at the University of Missouri School of Law. Under the Constitution, if the United States is invaded, Congress has the power to call up the militia and can allow the suspension of habeas corpus, the constitutional right that is the core of due process. The states, which are normally forbidden from unilaterally engaging in war, can do so according to the Constitution if they are actually invaded. The Alien Enemies Act, an 18th century wartime law enacted during a naval conflict with France, also rests on the definition of an invasion. It allows the president to expel aliens during any invasion or predatory incursion by any foreign nation or government. It has only ever been invoked three times, during the War of 1812 and World Wars I and II.Habeas corpus has likewise been suspended only a handful of times in the Constitutions nearly 240-year history, including during Reconstruction, to put down violent rebellions in the South by the Ku Klux Klan; in 1905, to suppress the Moro uprising against U.S. control of the Philippines; and in Hawaii after Pearl Harbor in order to place Japanese Americans under martial law. In each of these cases, the executive branch acted after receiving permission from Congress. An exception was in 1861, when President Abraham Lincoln unilaterally suspended habeas corpus at the outbreak of the Civil War. This provoked a direct confrontation with Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Taney, who ruled that only Congress was empowered to take such an extraordinary step. Congress later papered over the conflict by voting to give Lincoln the authority for the wars duration.Today, nearly every historian and constitutional scholar is in agreement that, when it comes to suspending habeas, Congress has the power to decide if the conditions are met. The Constitution does not vest this power in the President, future Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote in 2014. Scholars and courts have overwhelmingly endorsed the position that, Lincolns unilateral suspensions of the writ notwithstanding, the Constitution gives Congress the exclusive authority to decide when the predicates specified by the Suspension Clause are satisfied. Even then, the Constitution only allows Congress to act in extreme circumstances when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it.Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University who has closely followed these arguments, argues there is virtually no evidence that the drafters of the Constitution thought of an invasion as anything other than the kind of organized incursion that would traditionally spark a war.The original meaning of invasion in the Constitution is actually what sort of the average normal person would think it means, Somin said. As James Madison put it, invasion is an operation of war. What Vladimir Putin did to Ukraine, thats an invasion. What Hamas did to Israel, thats an invasion. On the other hand, illegal migration, or drug smuggling, or ordinary crime thats not an invasion. In 1994, Florida Democratic Gov. Lawton Chiles Jr. filed the first modern-day lawsuit arguing otherwise. The Haitian and Cuban refugee crises had spawned a new wave of anti-immigration sentiment, and hard-liners accused the federal government of owing states billions for handling immigrants supposed crimes and welfare claims. Chiles, who died in 1998, took the concept one step further. He filed a $1.5 billion suit claiming the U.S. had violated the section of the Constitution stating the federal government shall protect each [state] against Invasion. Federal courts slapped down his lawsuit and a spate of copycat suits from Arizona, California, New York and New Jersey and the legal case for calling immigration an invasion died out.In the late 2000s, a group of far-right voices began to revive this approach. Ken Cuccinelli was among the first and most strident. He was an early member of State Legislators for Legal Immigration, part of a powerful network of anti-immigration groups that pioneered efforts like ending birthright citizenship. The organization contended that immigrants were foreign invaders as described in the Constitution. Cuccinelli evangelized for the theory as he rose from a state legislator to an official in Trumps first Department of Homeland Security.Under war powers, theres no due process, Cuccinelli told Breitbart radio shortly before his appointment in the first Trump administration. They can literally just line their National Guard up with, presumably with riot gear like they would if they had a civil disturbance, and turn people back at the border. You just point them back across the river and let them swim for it.Cuccinelli got traction after Trumps reelection loss. He joined a think tank Vought had founded as its immigration point man. During his time in the first Trump administration, Vought became frustrated that the presidents goals were frequently thwarted. He founded the Center for Renewing America, dedicated to a sweeping vision of remaking the government and society what ultimately became Project 2025.In remarks to a private audience at his think tank in 2023, Vought, who is now Trumps budget chief and the intellectual force behind Trumps unprecedented executive power grab, said he specifically championed the term invasion because it unlocked extraordinary presidential powers. One of the reasons why we were very, so insistent about coming up with the whole notion of the border being an invasion because there were Constitutional authorities that were a part of being able to call it an invasion, Vought said. Documented and ProPublica obtained videos of Voughts speech last year. Vought and Cuccinelli did not respond to requests for comment. In 2021 and 2022, Cucinelli, with Voughts help, mounted press conferences and privately urged Gov. Doug Ducey of Arizona and Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas to proclaim that their states were being invaded. After Arizonas then-attorney general, Mark Brnovich, released a legal opinion in February 2022 proclaiming violent cartels had actually invaded and opened the door for Ducey to deploy the states National Guard, Vought bragged to his audience that he and Cuccinelli had personally provided draft language for the opinion. In a previous email to ProPublica, Brnovich acknowledged speaking to Cuccinelli but said his opinion was drafted and written by hard working attorneys (including myself) in our office. Ducey never acted on the invasion theory. But Abbott was more receptive. He invoked the states war powers, citing the actually invaded clause, in a 2022 open letter to President Joe Biden. Two years of inaction on your part now leave Texas with no choice, he wrote. Andrew Mahaleris, a spokesperson for Abbott, said the governor declared an invasion due to the Biden Administrations repeated failures in upholding its constitutional duty to secure the border and defend states.Abbott ordered the banks of the Rio Grande river to be strung with razor wire and a shallow section to be obstructed by a 1,000-foot string of man-sized buoys and blades and signed a law, S.B. 4, giving state authorities the power to deport undocumented immigrants. When the Justice Department sued, Abbotts administration argued in legal briefs that its actions were justified in part because his state was under invasion. Twenty-three Republican attorneys general filed a brief in agreement. In both scope and effect, the wave of illegal migrants pouring across the border is like an invasion, their brief read. The Constitutions text, the principle of sovereignty in the federal design, and the broader constitutional structure all support the conclusion that the States have a robust right to engage in self-defense. Contained within that right is presumptively acts to repel invasion.Texas invasion argument did not prevail. The 5th Circuit has blocked S.B. 4., and a lower court and a three-judge panel skewered Abbotts constitutional argument in the buoy case. In 2024, the full 5th Circuit ruled under another law that Abbott was entitled to leave the floating barriers in place. It avoided ruling on Texas invasion claim altogether but not without one judge dissenting. Trump appointee James Ho argued courts have no ability to second-guess executives about which threats rise to the level of an invasion and justify military action. In his speech, Vought credited the massive take-up rate of the invasion legal theory to his and Cuccinellis behind-the-scenes efforts. Now the concept is being taken seriously by the presidents top advisers as they threaten to upend a core civil liberty. The definition of invasion has broad implications for civil liberties thats pretty obvious, Somin said. Theyre trying to use this as a tool to get around constitutional and other legal constraints on deportation and exclusion that would otherwise exist. But they also want to use it to undermine civil liberties for U.S. citizens. Molly Redden is covering legal affairs and how the second Trump administration is attempting to reshape the legal system. WWW.PRIDE.COMNew study shows LGBTQ+ people love astrology more than straight people, these experts explain whyTurns out astrology is even gayer than we thought!Thats right, almost twice as many LGBTQ+ Americans consult astrology or their horoscope at least yearly, compared to adults overall, a new survey finds. We all have queer friends who have to know everyones astrological sign, is obsessed with horoscopes, and collect tarot decks, but now that isnt just a familiar anecdote, there is real research to back it up.According to a new Pew Research study, 54% of LGBTQ+ adults consult astrology or horoscopes at least once or twice a year, whereas only 28% of U.S. adults overall do the same. Plus, 33% of queer adults report that they consult tarot cards (making them three-times as likely as adults overall), and a further 21% says they rely "at least a little on what theyve learned from astrology, horoscopes, tarot cards, or a fortune teller when making major life decisions. The study points out that most Americans arent actually looking for insight or guidance on life decisions, but are doing it for fun. Women and younger Americans are also more likely to believe in astrology. Women are about twice as likely as men to believe in astrology (35% compared to 18%), and 18 to 29-year-old Gen Z adults are more likely to believe than adults over 65 (33% compared to 17%).But why do queer people gravitate toward astrology? To get to the bottom of this, we reached out to lesbian astrologer Courtney Trethric, who also teaches yoga and is an intuitive tarot guide, as well as New York-based queer astrologer Christa Lei, and Carmen Turner Schott, a best-selling author of 11 astrology books and the founder of Deep Soul Divers Astrology.Homophobia in religion rears its ugly headNow, that we have research to backup our lived experience that more queer people are into astrology, the question remains. Why? Trethric tells PRIDE its because LGBTQ+ people have been shunned in mainstream religions. Queer people have long been drawn to the occult and non-traditional forms of spirituality, she explains. Historically, we havent always been welcomed in mainstream religious spaces. Practices like astrology, tarot, and other forms of divination offer a more open and inclusive environment. It's free from discrimination, rigid dogma, or social expectations around what is or isnt acceptable. In astrology, everyone has a place. She continued, It's spirituality without the hierarchy or trauma that often accompanies organized religion. Lei agreed, We already live a life as outsiders because we are queer and dont necessarily fit in with the status quo," she says.Struggle and traumaTurner Schott has found that in her work as social worker, queer clients are more likely to lean into astrology because they are on a quest for answers and self-awareness and going through hard times.I feel that queer clients often have experienced struggles with embracing their true identities and they value having the freedom to research and explore topics that are created to support them in their search for self-awareness, Turner Schott says. Astrology, tarot, and fortune telling are tools that can be used to validate things about ourselves and others.Trethric agrees, When society already views your existence as unconventional, exploring alternative spiritual paths can feel liberating, even empowering. If youre already perceived as taboo, why not explore all the other taboos too?Is this interest in astrology new? While interest in astrology, horoscopes and tarot has always been there, Turner Schott thinks social media has made it spread faster. I think with social media and with generational movements and belief systems, we see more interest online with astrology and new age topics, she explains. "People are more open and share more. I think the new generations are more open-minded and accepting of unique, eccentric, and non-traditional beliefs.Lei thinks that people today are far more open about alternative practices than they were in the past, and that astrology being considered more mainstream than it used to be has also driven up interest. I just think its become queer currency and more people are open to talking about it and being curious, she says.Young women are also statistically more drawn to astrology, but Trethric has noticed this in her own practice as well, Ive also noticed that many young women, across diverse backgrounds, are especially drawn to astrology, she says. The community it fosters, the conversations it opens up, and the emotional intimacy it allows (particularly between women and their often female practitioners) creates a container of compassion, understanding, and relatability.0 Comments 0 Shares 33 Views 0 Reviews

NEWSISOUT.COMThe sacramental shame many LGBTQ+ conservative Christians wrestle with and how they findhealingKai found Jesus as a teenager. A person of white and Hawaiian descent, Kai now goes by gender-neutral pronouns and identifies as mh, the traditional Hawaiian term for someone in-between masculine and feminine. But when they first became Christian, the high-schooler identified as gay and was committed to celibacy.Kai a pseudonym to protect their privacy embraced their churchs welcoming but not affirming teachings about LGBTQ+ people, agreeing that same-sex intimacy was incompatible with being Christian. It felt good to be sacrificing for the Lord, Kai recalls. But they eventually realized they were harming themself.I found myself unconsciously shutting down connection, Kai told us. Inside, I was crumbling in every moment because I was so fervently policing myself.Kai believed and their church taught that Gods own love is a gift, freely given. Nevertheless, they still felt that to be worthy of that love, Kai had to surrender their orientation and need for emotional connection, even with friends. It took me a long time to be able to look back on that and say, Those were days when I hated myself, Kai said. I hated myself for the sake of demonstrating how much I loved God.Kai began to reflect on what it meant to be Christian and concluded that Jesus didnt have a problem with same-sex marriage, or gender beyond clear ideas of male and female. Christian friends quietly cut Kai out of their lives. As a sociologist and a philosopher, weve worked together to understand the experiences of LGBTQ+ conservative Christians. Kais story illustrates a dynamic that in our 2025 book, Choosing Love, we call sacramental shame. In Christianity, the word sacrament often refers to a particular rite, like baptism, that provides a tangible sign of Gods presence. Many of the LGBTQ+ Christians we spoke with felt that conservative congregations expected them to demonstrate shame for their identity to prove they hadnt turned their backs on God that God was still present in their lives.Weight of shameSome Protestant denominations fully affirm LGBTQ+ identities, same-sex marriage and gender transition, and other churches are split. But when we learned that LGBTQ+ people and their allies were advocating for change in conservative churches, we wanted to hear their stories. In interviews and fieldwork, LGBTQ+ evangelicals told us that their churches often treated being cisgender and straight as though it were more important than the Ten Commandments. In some congregations, being LGBTQ+ is treated as an especially grave sin. But since people cant change their sexual orientation or gender identity at will, treating these things as sins creates an experience of endless shame. In the sacramental shame dynamic, churches require LGBTQ+ people to feel and display shame as the sign that they have not rejected God. Their churches, families and friends more or less require them to act as though their very capacity to love others, and to recognize the truth about themselves, is a danger to the people they love.As one person recalled, there were a lot of [friends] that I cut off. And I thought I was endangering them. I thought that I was going to poison them.Feeling unworthy of the love of God and other people can make people feel like their lives are not worth living. We heard about countless struggles with addiction, depression and suicide attempts and sometimes even physical symptoms, like unexplained asthma attacks or autoimmune disorders that developed as LGBTQ+ people wrestled with the stress of trying fervently to be worthy of love.Queer Christians of colorSacramental shame isnt easy for anyone, but often it can be more complicated for Black or Indigenous Christians and other Christians of color. In part, thats because centuries-old racist tropes often depict minority groups in a sexualized way, as promiscuous or exotic. Not wanting to affirm those stereotypes can make it harder for LGBTQ+ Christians of color to navigate life.Kai, like many Christians, was drawn to the faiths message of love and justice for the oppressed. Religion can offer support and strength for dealing with the realities of racism. But that can sometimes turn into a pressure to disprove racism by behaving as respectably as possible.A Black, bisexual pastor well call Imani grew up in a church that quietly supported LGBTG+ people, but she never knew it. As a young person, Imani worried that her own sexuality might cause trouble for her mother, who had already been through a lot:I was scared of embarrassing my mother. All I could think about was the swirling doom that would be, if people found out. I never even thought for a second that it was an option. Some white respondents, too, feared that coming out would embarrass their parents. But for Imani, silence about her sexuality seemed necessary to protect the Black communitys respectability, as well as her familys belonging in the church. We also met Darren Calhoun: a Black, gay man who was urged to try to fight being gay. His pastors ideas about how to fix Darren involved having him live in an out-of-state church building for four years, sleeping on the altar and fasting two days a week.It ended when Darren heard Christ telling him to stop hiding from life. So he went home, and his pastor told the church not to talk to him.Shifting viewsSome conservative Christians, including allies who arent LGBTQ+, are starting to change the conversation and their own views. In 2024, New Testament scholar Richard Hays and his son Christopher Hays drew ire from some fellow evangelicals by publishing a book arguing that Gods mercy creates room in the church for LGBTQ+ people. Before them, evangelical leaders such as Tony Campolo, David Gushee and James Brownson had also changed their minds.Leaders or laypeople who have rethought the issue often pointed out to us that Jesus said all of the Ten Commandments come down to loving God and your neighbor. Some said their views began to shift when they remembered to exercise humility, realizing that they might not know everything about gender, sexuality and Gods plan. For example, the Book of Genesis says that God created male and female; it also says God created day and night, and sea and dry land. But as transgender Bible scholar Austen Hartke writes in his 2018 book Transforming, recognizing night and day doesnt preclude sunsets. The fact that there are seas and dry land doesnt mean marshes are abominable. As Kai tried to share Gods love with other LGBTQ+ people, Kai came to realize that their churchs expectation for all LGBTQ+ people to be celibate wasnt just hurting me; it was hurting other people. Kai decided that As holy as this feels, its not the spirit of the Jesus I fell in love with when I became a Christian.Humility is not the opposite of pride; it is a realistic awareness of your gifts and your limitations. When LGBTQ+ people celebrate pride, they are celebrating the often hard-won knowledge that they are human beings, worthy of love.Dawne Moon, Professor of Social and Cultural Sciences, Marquette University and Theresa Tobin, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Marquette UniversityThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. NEWSISOUT.COMThe OutLook: LGBTQ+ politics & policy: May 23, 2025The Outlook is our weekly roundup of political issues that affect the LGBTQ+ community. The Republican-led House narrowly passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which now includes expanded restrictions on federal funding for gender-affirming care and rolls back insurance coverage requirements, potentially increasing out-of-pocket costs for transgender patients. Now the bill heads to the Senate. A federal judge in California is reviewing a challenge to three executive orders issued by former President Trump that limit federal funding for programs related to gender identity and diversity, equity, and inclusion, after several LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS nonprofits reported receiving funding termination notices and argued the orders infringe on free speech protections.Over half of Texas 220 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have stalled, but several restrictive measures remain active, alongside a historic House vote to repeal the states sodomy law.Several LGBTQ+ candidates in Pennsylvania advanced in the May 20 primary, including Erica Deuso, who could become the states first openly trans mayor, and judicial hopefuls like Sherrie Cohen and Leon A. King II.Ohio House Democrats have introduced HB 300, a bill that would ban conversion therapy for minors statewide. WWW.PRIDE.COMAlexander Skarsgrd's short shorts have the gays going wild: 'I wanted to be sexy today'Alexander Skarsgrd is making yet another splash with his bold fashion choices, this time appearing on the ITV talk show, Lorraine, on Friday wearing teeny tiny shorts.Guest host Ranvir Singh quickly drew attention to the True Blood stars outfit, complimenting how "out there and free" he is with his style."I wanted to be sexy today," he admitted, "and I thought theres nothing sexier than a middle-aged man in a British schoolboy uniform."Per Singhs request, Skarsgrd subsequently stood to show off his legs properly, and audiences were very pleased with the whole situation. (@) "He's so babygirl here" (@) "Alexander Skarsgard is so Miu Miu it-girl coded. In another universe, hes Miuccia Pradas muse." (@) "Celebrities being fun again is so wholesome to see" (@) "alexander skarsgrd on 'lorraine': ''So great to have Alexander Skarsgrd in the studio looking as stylish as ever!'" (@) "He just understands the vibe in a way that almost no other actor does, like this diva is feeling the FANTASY"This certainly wasnt the only time Skarsgrd has turned heads with his fashion lately. Appearing at the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of Wes Andersons The Phoenician Scheme, he threw on some thigh-high leather boots over an otherwise normal tailored suit. The fetish-adjacent choice was purposeful meant as a nod to his role as the BDSM-enthusiast leader of a biker gang in the upcoming Pillion. Of course, fans will also consider it reminiscent of the time he donned a collar and leash for Infinity Pool press back in 2023.Oh, then there was that time he just skipped pants altogether for the 2016 MTV Movie Awards.Keep doing what youre doing, sir!0 Comments 0 Shares 74 Views 0 Reviews
