Rep. Chris Pappas was only LGBTQ+ legislator to support bill restricting trans healthcare
Out gay Rep. Chris Pappas was one of 81 Democrats who voted in favor of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) yesterday, a $895.2 billion military bill that included a provision restricting gender-affirming care for minors. Pappas is co-chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus and has a long history of supporting pro-LGBTQ+ legislation, but he was the only out LGBTQ+ Congress member to vote for the NDAA. A previous version of the NDAA reportedly banned all gender-affirming care covered by the militarys health insurance plan, TRICARE, whereas the current provision only bans any medical treatment for gender dysphoria that could result in sterilization for children under 18. Its unclear if the current legislation would ban puberty blockers (which dont affect fertility), hormone replacement therapies (which can), or mastectomies (which are rarely ever performed on minors). Related Families consider leaving the military after House votes yes on anti-trans spending bill The NDAA would remove gender-affirming care coverage for servicemembers trans children. The current version of the NDAA still needs a Senate vote and the signature of President Joe Biden to become law. The Democrat-controlled Senate could potentially remove the provision before passing its own version of the NDAA, and Biden has previously pledged to veto any legislation that harms the LGBTQ+ community. Subscribe to our Newsletter today LGBTQ Nation reached out to Pappas for comment and will update this article if he responds. The NDAA is an annual bill that regulates how the military budget is spent; it also regulates additional military facets beyond the budget, including funding for projects in congressional districts nationwide. On Thursday, a group of 45 Senate Democrats sent a letter urging leadership to reject the NDAAs anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ provisions. The letter noted that House Republicans have introduced more than 50 anti-LGBTQ+ provisions across all 12 appropriations bills, including the NDAA. The other bills provisions would allow taxpayer-funded people and organizations to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people. Several of the bills other provisions would prevent the administration from enforcing executive orders and laws to protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination.Partisan, discriminatory, and harmful policy riders have no place in must-pass legislation such as appropriations bills. In the recent past, the Senate has had success passing bipartisan bills in committee because these bills did not contain new poison pill riders, the letter said.Half of the Houses appropriations bills also contain dangerous riders that severely restrict access to gender-affirming care, which would deprive transgender people of critical, medically necessary, evidence-based, and often life-saving healthcare, the letter continues. Among those who would be impacted by these riders are the more than 134,000 transgender veterans who rely on the Veterans Affairs Administration for their healthcare. The letter also noted that, in 2024 alone, more than 574 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced across 42 state legislatures. A brief history of Pappas LGBTQ+ advocacyPappas was first elected to Congress in 2018, is the first out member of Congress from New Hampshire, and has served as co-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus. The centrist Democrat has gotten a score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaigns Congressional Scorecard for his previous sessions in Congress. He was also one of the Advocates for Trans Equalitys inauguralTrans Equality Champions, recognizing legislators who have fought to protect and advance trans rights amidst a surge of federal legislative attacks. Pappas co-sponsored the Equality Act, a bill that would update existing federal civil rights legislation to explicitly ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Every American deserves the same rights and responsibilities, and no one should be discriminated against just because of who they are or whom they love, he said of the bill.In January 2024, Pappas was one of three out representatives who asked Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to expedite the process forformer LGBTQ+ soldiers still seeking to upgrade their less-than-honorable dischargesafter being kicked out of the military under Dont Ask Dont Tell (DADT) and other historic bans on out queer military service members. In the same vein, in June 2023, Pappas introduced the SERVE Act (Securing the Rights our Veterans Earned). The legislation sought to guarantee and protect Veteran Affairs (VA) benefits for military veterans discharged from the military due to their LGBTQ+ identity. In June 2023, Pappas introduced a House bill to ban the gay and trans panic defenses in federal courts. In October 2023, he was co-sponsor of a bill to research and create a National Museum of American LGBTQ+ History and Culture. He also voted in favor of the Respect for Marriage Act, a law that requires the federal and state governments to recognize same-sex and interracial marriages performed by other states.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Everything you need to know about dental dams, according to experts
For those of us lucky enough to get sex ed in school, you may have experienced putting a condom on a banana, but its unlikely dental dams were ever mentioned, let alone demonstrated. This lack of education, combined with the misconception about Sapphic sex weve all been inundated with in popular culture that were doing it for men and that scissoring is either an urban legend or our number one sex act means that weve all missed out on realistic depictions of queer women getting busy and the best ways for LGBTQ+ people sporting vulvas to practice safe sex.Although dental dams have been used to prevent STIs since the 1980s, most women even queer women have no idea how to use them or how to introduce them in the bedroom. So, to help us demystify the dental dam, PRIDE spoke with certified sex expert Isabelle Uren, certified sexuality educator and coach Cady Moore, and Ed Buhler, PhD and director at the sex toy shop Bodyjoys. What is a dental dam and why is it important to use one in the bedroom? In case you dont know, a dental dam is a thin piece of latex (or polyurethane if you have a latex allergy) designed to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. In a nutshell, as Moore tells PRIDE, you stretch it over your partner's naughty bits before oral sex to help protect against STIs, thus keeping your oral adventures spicy *and* safe.Uren agrees but says that dental dams arent just good for oral; they can be used for rimming or other anal play too. She also explains that dental dams should always be used if you are not exclusively fluid bonded with your sexual partner or are having sex with someone who doesnt have a current negative STI screening and warns against having sex with someone who has an active infection even with the use of a dental dam as no barrier method is 100% effective. It's a common misconception that STIs cannot spread through oral sex, Uren explains. "In reality, most STIs can be transmitted through oral sex. They also protect against the transmission of bacteria during rimming. Some people might also prefer to use a dental dam to receive oral sex while menstruating. How do you use them and during what activity?Dental dams are perfect for oral sex on vulvas or for rim jobs or during menstruation or any old time really. Luckily, the ultra-thin membrane is incredibly user-friendly. All you need to do is place the dental dam over your partner's vulva or anus, covering the full area so that all of their body fluids are trapped underneathPlace it over your partner's anus or vulva, making sure it covers the full area so any body fluids will be trapped under the sheet. Hold the dental dam in place so it doesn't slide out of position. You can then perform oral sex as you would usually. If you notice any signs of damage during use, throw the dental dam out and get a fresh one, Uren says.Tips for first-time usersIf youre new to dental dams, there are a few tips to keep in mind. Always use a new dental dam, and be sure to only use one side. Adding a drop of lube avoid using oil-based lubes that can degrade the latex; instead, use water-based or silicon-based lubrication for extra sensation. If youre turned off by the smell and taste of latex, try flavored dental dams. And if youre nervous about using one with a partner, practice by using one during solo play first. Many people hesitate when it comes to oral dams, thinking they might hinder the experience or be difficult to apply, Buhler says. In reality, though, oral dams are incredibly simple to use. Just apply them over the area of choice, and get to work giving your partner a sensual experience thatll rock their world. And to really enhance the sensations, add a little water-based lube behind the dam.How do you introduce their use into your bedroom activities with your partner? When using dental dams for the first time with a new partner, its best to bring up the topic outside of sex, but Buhler says that there is never one perfect moment to broach the subject. Instead, bringing it up in a casual, light-hearted manner can help.Moore agrees, Whenever I work with clients who are looking to incorporate something new into the bedroom, I suggest that they propose it as something new to try together, keeping it casual and confident. Something like: Hey, Ive been wanting to try thiswanna experiment together? (because safer sex is a team sport). You can even make it playful by picking flavors together or turning it into a sexy little demo.In a pinch can you use a condom instead? If you're in the mood, but don't have a dental dam handy, you can use a condom instead! It's really easy: Take the condom out of the wrapper. Cut off the tip and slice down the length of the condom. Unroll and voil. A home made dental dam. Tried dental dams, but theyre not your thing? Try fun flavored versions or use Lorals instead theyre cute undies made out of latex, so they look sexy while protecting your lady bits.Is it common for people to use dental dams?According to a 2022 study by the International Journal of Womens Dermatology, only 10% to 15% of women use dental dams during oral sex, and that number is even lower among women who exclusively have sex with women. Buhler says his own experience as the director of Bodyjoys backs up that data. I can only judge from the amount we sold over time and based on this I would say they become more popular but are by no mean mainstream yet.Moore says that dental dams should be more popular than they are. Honestly, dental dams arent nearly as popular as they should be (like pineapple on pizzacontroversial but underrated), she says. Most folks dont use them *because they dont know they exist*. But hey, youre ahead of the curve now, so start spreading the gospel of oral safety!Experts cited: Isabelle Uren, Certified Sex Expert & Site Manager at BedbibleCady Moore, AASECT-Certified Sexuality Educator & Coach at Age of SexplorationEd Buhler, PhD and director at the sex toy shop Bodyjoys

This lesbian version of 'Baby It's Cold Outside' has us giggling & in the Christmas spirit
Its that time of year when Christmas music is suddenly everywhere weve already heard "All I Want For Christmas is You" at least 100 times but other than queer hits like Whams "Last Christmas" and Lady Gagas "Christmas Tree," there arent a lot of options if you want to celebrate the yuletide season without listening to music about straight couples and heteronormative families. But thats all changing with one TikTok couples fun lesbian riff on "Baby Its Cold Outside."Earlier this month, queer social media personalities Ruby and Katrena posted their own version of the popular and somewhat controversial song that was originally about a man trying to convince a woman to stay at his place for the night, but added their own Sapphic twist by keeping the tune but changing the lyrics. While the original starts with the lyrics I really cant stay/ Baby, its cold outside, their new version plays on the U-Haul lesbian stereotype with the line, You really should stay/ Maybe just one more week.@rubyandkatrenaIts that time of year again#wlw #lesbiancouples #queertok #christmas #sapphic #lgbt #holidayThe two lesbian lovebirds who started out in a long-distance relationship before Ruby moved to California to be with Katrena continue to mimic the original call-and-response duet but with modern and very gay lyrics while snuggled up together on their couch. This evening has been/ So happy you were on Hinge/ So very nice/ Could see us engaged by next Pride, the pair sings. In the song, Katrena even admits that her dad still thinks shes straight a relatable lyric for a lot of queer women with judgmental families, My father thinks Ive been dating guys/ Tell me youre not the closeted type. Its a sweet, funny, and adorable take on a Christmas classic, with lyrics about lesbian topics like borrowing a pair of Woxers (boxers for women), what your astrological sign is, flannel shirts, and even who should spoon who, with the line, Can you be the big spoon this time? There is even an ode to the lesbian cat lady in all of us, I wish I knew how/ Your cat is my child now/ To break this spell.See on InstagramLucky for fans of Ruby and Katrenas take on the 1940s OG, the couple is currently working on releasing their Sapphic version. And theyve turned some of their favorite lines from the song into merch made by queer artists that you can buy. But if you cant wait for the lesbian Christmas vibes, they also released their very first single last week, and its a Christmas song called Ice, which you can stream on Spotify. So snuggle up with your boo and enjoy the holiday season in the most lesbian way possible!

Sen. Tammy Baldwin & 44 others fight GOPs anti-LGBTQ+ provisions in must pass funding bills
On Thursday, out lesbian Sen. Tammy Baldwin helped lead a group of 45 Senate Democrats in urging Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Patty Murray (D-WA) and Vice Chair Susan Collins (R-ME) to reject 55 anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ+ provisions in 12 must-pass funding bills to avoid a government shutdown.House Republicans have used the [2025 fiscal year] appropriations process to push extremist and unpopular anti- LGBTQ+ measures, which threaten the lives and fundamental dignity of LGBTQ+ communities, Baldwin and the other senators wrote in an open letter. Related Donald Trumps Pentagon nominee said gays ruined the military in rant from just this year Pete Hegseth said repealing Dont Ask, Dont Tell marked the beginning of the end of the militarys tough looking, go get em culture. The provisions would allow taxpayer-funded organizations to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people. Several of the bills other provisions would prevent the administration from enforcing executive orders and laws to protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Half of the Houses appropriations bills also contain dangerous riders that severely restrict access to gender-affirming care, which would deprive transgender people of critical, medically necessary, evidence-based, and often life-saving healthcare, the letter continues. Among those who would be impacted by these riders are the more than 134,000 transgender veterans who rely on the Veterans Affairs Administration for their healthcare. One of the aforementioned provisions would issue a ban on Medicare and Medicaid funds for healthcare providers who provide gender-affirming medical care. Many hospitals and medical providers could stop offering the care rather than risk losing access to federal funds.Other provisions would repeal President Joe Bidens executive orders protecting access to abortion care, interfere with postgraduate medical training in abortion care, and restrict access to abortion and fertility care for military members, veterans, and their families. If adopted, these provisions would dramatically undermine peoples ability to make decisions about their bodies, lives, and futures, the letter stated, adding, Partisan, discriminatory, and harmful policy riders have no place in must-pass legislation such as appropriations bills. In the recent past, the Senate has had success passing bipartisan bills in committee because these bills did not contain new poison pill riders. The letter also noted that, in 2024 alone, more than 574 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced across 42 state legislatures. The senators letter is endorsed by several LGBTQ+ and allied organizations including the Human Rights Campaign, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Whitman-Walker Institute, the National Womens Law Center, Reproductive Freedom for All, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and Advocates for Trans Equality among other groups.Realistically, Congress will not be able to agree upon final versions of these bills in time to get them signed into law before the federal legislature adjourns on December 20. As such, lawmakers will likely need to pass a continuing resolution (CR) to avoid a government shutdown by maintaining current levels of government spending until Congress can pass new funding bills. The real question is how long the CR will last. Republicans will hold a 53-47 seat majority in the Senate next term, but assuming that they dont eliminate the filibuster rule theyll need Democratic support to overcome the 60-vote threshold to overcome a filibuster. As such, Democrats may be able to successfully prevent the anti-LGBTQ+ and abortion amendments from becoming law, even after President-elect Donald Trump is sworn back into office.Concurrently, House Republicans have introduced a provision in the $895.2 billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that bans the militarys health insurance plan, TRICARE, from covering any medical treatment for gender dysphoria that could result in sterilization for children under 18.Its unclear if the current legislation would ban puberty blockers (which dont affect fertility), hormone replacement therapies (whichcan), or mastectomies (which are rarely ever performed on minors). While 81 Democrats voted in favor of the NDAA, it still needs a Senate vote and the signature of President Joe Biden to become law. The Democratic Senate could potentially remove the provision before passing its own version of the NDAA, and Biden has previously pledged to veto any legislation that harms the LGBTQ+ community.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Pete Hegseth walks back his opposition to gay people serving in the military
Donald Trumps nominee for secretary of defense, former Fox host Pete Hegseth, flipped his position on Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal without explanation, telling reporters yes when asked whether he supports allowing gay people to serve in the military.Hegseth is facing an uphill battle for confirmation in the Senate due to accusations of sexual assault and extreme drunkenness. His opposition to women serving in combat roles in the military and his previous tirades against LGBTQ+ people serving in the military havent helped either. Related Donald Trumps Secretary of Defense nominee thinks LGBTQ+ soldiers harm the military Pete Hegseth thinks the estimated 126,827 LGBTQ+ military service members erode standards of the US military. For example, he said on The Ben Shapiro Show earlier this year that repealing Dont Ask Dont Tell, the law that banned gay and bi people from serving openly in the military, was part of a shift from the tough looking, go get em army to the absurdity of I have two mommies and Im so proud to show them that I can wear a uniform too.' Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today He said that Marxists and leftists allowed queer people to serve in the military, and in his book The War on Warriors he said that this was a gateway and a camouflage for broad cultural changes that harmed the military. An estimated6.1%of current military personnel identify as LGBTQ+,according to a 2022 study, a percentage that accounts for approximately 126,827 people. Trump is also expected to ban transgender people from serving in the military, which could result in over 10,000 people being discharged from the military at a time when the military faces difficulty in recruiting enough servicemembers.Hegseth has also been hostile to the idea that women can serve in combat roles. We shouldnt be having military sexual assault. Everybody understands that. We need to be taking care of it, hesaid in 2016. You think you bring women into infantry, different units, you might exacerbate that a little bit? Im not saying thats anybodys fault, but thats an unintended consequence of that priority also.He doubled down on this position on women in combat just last month. Im straight up just saying we should not have women in combat roles, he asserted in a recent CNN interview. It hasnt made us more effective, hasnt made us more lethal, has made fighting more complicated. Weve all served with women, and theyre great. But our institutions dont have to incentivize that in places where, traditionally not traditionally, over human history men in those positions are more capable. But he appears to be walking back these positions as confirmation hearings loom. He met with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) yesterday, and reporters then asked him whether he thought gay people should be allowed to serve in the military.Yes, he replied, according to Politico. In a recent Fox News appearance, he changed his position on women serving in combat roles.I also want an opportunity here to clarify comments that have been misconstrued, that I somehow dont support women in the military, some of our greatest warriors, our best warriors out there are women, he said on Sean Hannitys show this past Monday. But after President Trump asked me to be his Secretary of Defense, should I get the opportunity to do that, I look forward to being a secretary for all our warriors, men and women, for the amazing contributions they make in our military. Hegseth made headlines last week when he promised to stop drinking if he gets confirmed by the Senate. Shortly after Trump announced Hegseths nomination last month, an allegation of sexual assault from 2017 came to light. A woman accused him of sexually assaulting her at a conference for the California Federation of Republican Women in Monterrey. She reported the incident to police, and he made an undisclosed payment to her a few years later as part of a confidential settlement. No charges were filed, and Hegseth insists that the encounter was consensual. His lawyer now describes the incident as blackmail.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

This newly elected gay lawmaker explains what its like to win the same day that Donald Trump did
In his run for the Wisconsin State Assembly this year, 31-year-old Christian Phelps identified with a political tradition that predates the young, gay candidate by over a hundred years: Progressivism, a reform movement born on college campuses in his home state at the height of the Gilded Age.It was an economic and political era not unlike our own, when technology and wealth disparity threatened a restless working class. The Robber Barons of today corporate greed allies and political tricksters in Phelps estimation are creating false enemies and false villains of our neighbors, whether its undocumented immigrants or immigrants as a whole, or trans people. Its an effort to divide and conquer anyone who works for a living, he says, adding, The culprit is not my neighbor. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The soon-to-be assemblymember spoke with LGBTQ Nation from his newly drawn District 93 in Eau Claire, ground zero in swing state Wisconsin in the 2024 election. Hell be sworn into office on January 6.LGBTQ Nation: What are going to use to take the oath of office, and whos going to be there with you?Rep.-elect Christian Phelps: I havent thought about what Im going to take the oath of office on, but its definitely not going to be a religious text. Im vehement about the separation of church and state. But my partner is going to be there, and also my grandparents, who do live in Madison, and then anybody else that wants to come, honestly. Its been four weeks since the general election. You won yours, and so did Donald Trump. What was going through your mind that night?I was unwise enough to look at The New York Times app before I went to the Eau Claire County election night gathering. I thought it was pretty clear early on that he was going to win, and so I walked in already feeling, like, panicked about that. And so it was a very bizarre evening with people elated to see me, who had been just kind of watching my results and seeing that they were looking good and congratulating me, while I was sort of internally panicking about the national picture. We were already fighting against the status quo in so many ways, and now were fighting the status quo and authoritarianism. Theres a vacuum, I think. Left-wing populism can fill that vacuum when we say, Listen, the message we need to put forward isnt one thats about defending the status quo, its also about changing it. Just not in the Trumpian way in a way thats actually good.So you see a similarity between busting up the status quo, which is what Trump claims he wants to do, and Progressives who want to do the same thing? I dont see any similarity. I just see a message from voters that if they dont get the sense that youre going to do anything other than maintain and defend a status quo that they feel is leaving them behind, sometimes they choose to simply break it. And I wish that had not been the outcome of the election, because the breaking it that Trump is offering is really to break it in favor of himself and his billionaire friends and to enable some of the ugliness that weve seen from him. But I do take that as a little bit of a sign from voters that theyre looking for something more than simply a defense of the status quo.Trump said during the campaign that he would enact a national ban on transgender girls and women playing in womens and girls sports, and with that, access for trans athletes to womens spaces like bathrooms and locker rooms. Is that even possible, or do you think Trumps interest in the issue will disappear after he used it successfully to win back the White House?I find that predicting Trumps behavior is a fools errand, because I dont really see any evidence that he actually even holds a political ideology. He just holds an allegiance to himself and his own power. And so whatever is the most expedient way for him to consolidate that is where he stands in the moment. But that doesnt reduce the harm of relying on that narrative. I mean, regardless of what he tries to do policy-wise, damage has already been done by normalizing this type of rhetoric about our own neighbors and community members. We need to correctly identify who the villains are in the story, and theyre not trans people.Trumps first term was a failure by any reasonable measure. With that in mind, should Americans worry more that theres going to be a fascist in the White House come January 20, or that theres going to be a guy who wishes he had the respect that comes with being a dictator, but will never earn it, and his second term will be a litany of failures like the first one?Probably the best blueprint would be to look at where he did not fail on policy in his first administration, since there were so many instances of where he did. He did not fail in passing task tax cuts for the rich. I think that he will probably be able to enact some economic damage on the working class, which obviously disproportionately hits LGBTQ people. And he will launch rhetorical attacks as far as his anti-democracy efforts. Two of the highest profile out LGBTQ+ electeds in the country are from Wisconsin: Representative Mark Pocan and Senator Tammy Baldwin, who kept her seat after a highly contested race. Have you spent any time with either of them, and whats something youve learned from them in service of your work in education advocacy and as a soon-to-be legislator?I live in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, which was three competitive Assembly districts, one competitive U.S. House district, a statewide competitive Senate district and a competitive presidential race. So everybody came to Eau Claire a lot this year. So I spent time with both of them, and I think one thing that was helpful to me, is that the myth that rural and western Wisconsin voters will never elect an LGBTQ person has already been busted. She had already won twice and won a third time last month. So I didnt have to teach the media or the party or the voting population that this type of a district is open to electing an LGBTQ person, because they already had. Before the election, I spoke with Angelina Cruz, one of your soon-to-be colleagues in the Wisconsin Assembly, about a door-knock experience she had with a woman who was voting for both Trump and Baldwin. Can you describe or explain what a Trump-Baldwin voter is? I met more than one myself, and in many cases it was somebody who, in my interpretation, seemed to be ideologically conservative, but they just sort of respected the hustle, and they viewed Tammy Baldwin as the harder-working Senate candidate and the more grounded, more approachable Senate candidate. And so they were actually setting aside some of their ideological disagreements in order to vote for her. She was able to appeal to more conservative voters than other Democratic candidates seem to be.At a candidate forum in July, you were asked at the end if there were any issues you wanted to discuss that hadnt been brought up, and you made an impassioned argument about the public discourse around LGBTQ+ issues harming kids. You drew a parallel to when you were 13 years old and Wisconsinites voted in favor of a ban on same-sex marriage. Whats different now and whats the same versus when you were growing up in 2006?Sadly, I think there are too many similarities. The debate is like, Should trans girls be allowed to play sports, and Should drag queens be allowed to exist in the same neighborhood that children live in? And its absurd. And I know from my own personal experience that there are children in formative years grappling internally with their own identities, and they are listening to those conversations. That does damage to a person and to a community. The children can hear us. Youve said you were lucky to have the support of your parents and teachers when you were coming to terms with your own sexuality. What form did that take? Did you come out to them one day, or was there an unspoken understanding?I did come out to my parents, and I dont remember if I came out to teachers or anything. But public educators do represent a certain foundation of a community. The tone that theyre able to set is the kind of thing that can protect kids, in a way, against some of the rhetoric I was just referring to. I definitely know that I was lucky to have teachers that did that in their classrooms. And I had kind of an interesting identity, because on one hand, Ive always been relatively feminine, or whatever. Like, the coming out didnt shock anybody, I dont think, as far as who I am. But I was also an athlete, and so I was in a lot of all-male spaces and there was a certain amount of normalcy, credibility. When teenagers are trying to conform, if youre a good athlete, that helps you do that. But at the same time, that makes it harder to be different and to have a different identity. Its kind of a double-edged sword in that way. You earned a BA in Urban Studies from Vassar, which was well-known as a girls school before going co-ed in 1969. Even now, they maintain a majority-female ratio of women to men. Expanding womens productive freedoms is high on your list of priorities as a new Wisconsin assembly member. What did you learn about women at Vassar?Oh, interesting question. I dont know. I learned a lot about East Coast old money at Vassar. It was certainly a different student demographic, in more ways than just gender, at that school than what I was used to. It probably did expose me to more interrogation of how gender plays out in our society, and how to interrogate your own and where you fall in that, but I guess I dont really know. Ive never really given any thought to that question.Vassar is also well known for its embrace of the LGBTQ+ community. You were a tall, good-looking tennis player there. Were you out and about on campus, or the nerd in the library? (Laughing) I was a better student in grad school than I was in college. Because I think when youve taken a few years to develop your professional goals like, by the time I went to grad school, I had a much clearer goal about what I was doing there academically than I did in college. I wasnt a bad student or anything, but, you know, Vassar, having a large LGBTQ population, and having a well-documented history as such, was like a huge factor in why I went there. And certainly, some of the friendships that I formed there are the deepest ones in my life.Youve described your political awakening as happening with the passage of Act 10 in Wisconsin. That legislation stripped teachers of the right to collective bargaining. What was the effect on the states teachers and school system?Great question, because in some ways, it was obviously economic, and it came with huge cuts to public education that have not been restored yet. Our schools are severely underfunded, and I saw that when I was a special ed assistant. We were underpaid, and I had to get second jobs in order to pay my rent. But the bigger impact was just the cut to the morale. Teachers, instead of being revered and respected members of our community, were instead like a political wedge. And the emotional toll is, I think, greater than the financial one in some ways.Didnt Scott Walker accuse working teachers of having Cadillac benefits?Yes, exactly. And I think this whole cushy job narrative really took hold because of that movement. And its taken at least 13 years to start crawling that back. The privatization of Wisconsin schools is a major issue that you ran on. Democrats have faced a nearly 2-1 Republican majority in the assembly and in the state Senate the numbers are even worse. What are your prospects for making change in the face of that kind of opposition?Well, it wont be that kind of opposition in the new session. Weve narrowed the gap significantly because of the new legislative maps, so its going to be 45 Democrats to 54 Republicans in the Assembly this session, for the first time since the maps that they drew right after Act 10 that gave them that 2-1 majority. That means that the veto from our Democratic governor is no longer under threat. Now, I think when we have a little bit more of a cushion, it means we can push on the things that have been in the Republican status quo. Like, the next budget can be less bad than the last one. And even if they dig their heels in and dont let us make the policy changes, I do see better prospects in 2026 when their constituents in more competitive districts are more aware of how theyve been underfunding public education and siphoning money off to private schools instead. Would you support national mandatory service for young people in the military or some other form of public service of their choosing, like the Peace Corps or Teach for America?Ive never given much thought to that, but probably not. I dont think that a national mandate is necessary or makes a lot of sense there.Protecting the environment is high on your list of legislative priorities. Whats the single most important thing the world should do to address the climate crisis?I think correctly identifying who is really culpable, which are the high-polluting mega-corporations. I want to be really good about messaging that that doesnt mean were trying to control individual behavior. It means were trying to crack down on corporations that are profiting off of the continued damage to the planet. Before running for office, you served as comms director at Wisconsin Public Education Network, a statewide nonprofit advocating for public schools. What did you learn in that role thats going to inform your work as an assembly member?Ive seen how to communicate with members of the community from all stripes around the things that we are united on in a strategic way that builds the relationship in advance and gets something done and then continues that relationship. Change works a lot better when you have existing relationships that youre building on, rather than going to the community and saying, I need this from you now, and Im popping up out of nowhere. You mentioned youre a fierce advocate for the separation of church and state. How do you think that is going to play into your time as an assembly member? And are you religious in any way? Im not. I havent really talked about that because I just dont think that whether I am or not should be relevant to somebody running for office. This is a public service position and it should not prioritize anybodys personal religious practice or lack thereof.Education is my field, so when I talk about separation of church and state, that means a misuse of public funds to give them to private and religious schools that can pick and choose their students and pick and choose their curriculum to advance their religious agendas. That violates what the public is all about, and working in the state house means youre working on behalf of the public.Youre a Progressive. How do you define Progressivism? To me, it means understanding working-class solidarity. I mean, were all, to a certain extent unless youre a multi-millionaire or billionaire the working class. Youre somebody who works for a living, and you work to contribute to your community. To me, our Progressive tradition in western Wisconsin is strong when we recognize that, and we say we cant succeed unless we lift all boats. The culprit is not my neighbor. The culprit is a political trickster trying to tell me that my neighbor is the enemy or the corporate greed allies that got things like Act 10 passed. What can you tell us about your partner?I met him at Vassar. Hes actually in grad school right now to become a teacher, so he also is super passionate about education, and weve been together 10 years, which blows my mind.Do you have any marriage plans, and if so, whos going to propose to whom?Im the kind of person that can only handle one major life thing at a time (laughing). So we have specifically talked about how this whole running for office thing is a pretty major thing. So were going to have to revisit all the other major life-change conversations a little bit later. What are you most looking forward to when you start serving the constituents of Wisconsins Assembly District 93?Im looking forward to continuing the relationship-building that weve already been doing and learning from all the people Ive already been learning from. The whole reason I did this in the first place was because I saw that in a newly drawn district, we had an opportunity to put new people in the Capitol that want to co-govern with the community, that see movement builders and community organizers as key partners. That was the philosophy that I tried to carry into the campaign in the first place, and I think the fact that we won proves that that was a winning strategy.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Gay couple brought to tears as Japanese court rules marriage equality ban unconstitutional
The Fukuoka High Court of Japan has become the third of Japans eight high courts to rule that the governments policy against same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. However, the court upheld a lower court ruling that dismissed three same-sex couples who had sought 1 million yen ($6,540) each for being denied their constitutional rights to gender and legal equality, individual dignity, and the pursuit of happiness. The couples, who live in the southwestern cities of Fukuoka and Kumamoto, had their damage claims dismissed by the Fukuoka District Court in 2023 after the court ruled that the government wasnt obliged to compensate them or legalize marriage equality legislation despite being in state of unconstitutionality, The Mainichi reported. Related Historic Japan court ruling allows trans woman to change gender without surgery Trans people just scored an important win for bodily autonomy and freedom. High Court Judge Takeshi Okada ruled that civil laws forbidding same-sex marriages violate the nations constitution, saying, There is no longer any reason to not legally recognize marriage between same-sex couples. However, he noted that any change in national marriage laws must be decided by Japans legislature, known as the National Diet. Despite this, his 37-year-old partner Masahiro said [the judge] understood our suffering, and I felt very reassured.Opponents of marriage equality in Japan have noted that Article 24 of the Japanese constitution specifically states, Marriage shall be based only on the mutual consent of both sexes and it shall be maintained through mutual cooperation with the equal rights of husband and wife as a basis. However, marriage equality advocates have also pointed out that the constitutions other articles state, The people shall not be prevented from enjoying any of the fundamental human rights, and, All of the people are equal under the law and there shall be no discrimination in political, economic or social relations because of race, creed, sex, social status or family origin. Regardless, in October the Tokyo High Court ruled similarly, echoinganother one made by the Sapporo High Court in March, which said that limiting marriage to couples of the opposite sex is unconstitutional and discriminatory. Despite the rulings, the countrys judiciary doesnt have the power to overturn existing civil marriage codes.Marriage equality has divided the countrys court system in opposing rulings over several years. Meanwhile, Japans conservative government lags behind increasingly supportive public opinion. Seventy percent of the Japanesepublicsupports marriage equality, but it faces opposition from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The partylost its parliamentary majorityin last Sundays election and will likely have to compromise on more liberal policies pushed by the opposition parties, like marriage equality, the aforementioned publication noted. Right now, Japan doesnt offer national LGBTQ+ non-discrimination protections or same-sex marriage. As a result, LGBTQ+ people in Japan often face inequities in employment, housing, education, and health care.More than 200 Japanese municipalities offer some form of recognition for same-sex couples. Such recognition can help same-sex couples rent apartments together, visit each other in city hospitals, and receive other services that married heterosexual couples enjoy.Though several jurisdictions offer partnership certificates, theyre entirely symbolic and dont offer federal benefits given to married heterosexual couples. LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have pushed for a national bill that would enshrine equal civil rights and non-discrimination protections into law. However, the conservative party of Prime Minister Fumio Kishidahelped defeat the effortin the lead-up to the 2021 Olympic Summer Games.Japan remains the only country in the G7, a political and economic forum of seven of the worlds most advanced economies, that has not legalized marriage equality. Currently, the only Asian countries that have legalized same-sex marriage are Taiwan, Nepal, and Thailand.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Bluesky faces its first LGBTQ+ safety test as users call for anti-trans podcaster Jesse Singal ban
In the aftermath of the election, Bluesky has become a social media utopia for many marginalized groups, but now that peace is being threatened by an anti-trans interloper who users are urging the growing platform to ban. When Elon Musk bought Twitter (now X) and started promoting right-wing political views, liberals everywhere started looking for an escape route, and Bluesky seemed to be the answer. POC and LGBTQ+ users flocked to the new social media site after Donald Trump was elected in the hopes of finding an online community that didnt allow right-wing bigots and conspiracy theorists to flourish unimpeded the way they are easily able to on X. But now, Bluesky has ballooned to include 25 million users, and with that influx has come anti-trans writer and podcaster Jesse Singal, Tech Crunch reports. Singals loudly anti-trans views have made him the most blocked user on Bluesky, but this hasnt quelled user complaints about him being given a new platform on the social media network. The controversial 41-year-old has been tagged by GLAADs Accountability Project as someone who has used their platforms, influence, and power to spread misinformation and harm LGBTQ people based on his writings on trans issues and other matters.Part of what made Bluesky so attractive to Black and queer users who wanted to leave X was the amount of control it allows users to have over their own experience on the site. According to Tech Crunch, Bluesky has robust moderation and a suite of custom tools to help users curate the experience they want, including block lists, layered moderation, custom feeds, custom algorithms, labeling services, and more. Users can even take advantage of dedicated block lists that let you block entire groups, like MAGA supporters. But despite these advanced controls, Bluesky users are concerned their experience on the site may be compromised by the addition of Singal. Now, people are demanding that Bluesky intervene by preventing him from increasing his audience reach and by not giving Singal and people like him a platform altogether by banning him. While permanently banning Singal would be easy enough to do if he violated Blueskys terms of service or guidelines users say he has already begun harassing trans people on the site this decision could put the social media company at risk with the FCC since Brendan Carr, Trumps pick as the next head of the commission, has already said he plans to go after tech companies he thinks are censoring right-wing voices, the Washington Post reports. Singals presence on the site which was once an escape from the racism and anti-LGBTQ+ hate found on X has led users to create a Change.org petition to ban him from the site. This isnt the first time Bluesky has come under fire for moderation issues; last year, it faced criticism from Black users for its handling of hateful and violent rhetoric, Tech Crunch reported at the time.

Saudi Arabia kills its gay citizens. It will host the FIFA World Cup in 2034.
On Wednesday, FIFA, the international soccer federation responsible for organizing the quadrennial mens World Cup, formally awarded the 2034 tournament to Saudi Arabia, the lone nation to submit a bid after Australia and New Zealand dropped out in 2023.Homosexuality is punishable by execution in Saudi Arabia, and human rights organizations have condemned FIFAs decision. Related Rod Stewart turns down Saudi Arabia gig over the countrys anti-LGBTQ+ human rights abuses Id like my choice not to goto shine a light on the injustices there and ignite positive change. Todays confirmation of Saudi Arabia as host of the 2034 FIFA mens World Cup, despite the well-known and severe risks to residents, migrant workers and visiting fans alike, marks a moment of great danger, read a joint statement from nearly two dozen groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. Subscribe to our Newsletter today There is no shortage of evidence of migrant workers being exploited and subjected to [racial discrimination], activists sentenced to decades in prison for expressing themselves peacefully, women and LGBTQIA+ people facing legalized discrimination, or residents forcibly evicted to make way for state projects, the statement added. It is evident that without urgent action and comprehensive reforms, the 2034 World Cup will be tarnished by repression, discrimination and exploitation on a massive scale.Saudi Arabias winning bid comes two years after neighboring Qatar hosted a winter World Cup in 2022, where public displays of LGBTQ+ allyship including rainbow attire were banned by the government. Leading up to the tournament, FIFA said it would discipline players and teams with expulsion over plans to demonstrate against Qatars draconian anti-LGBTQ+ laws on the pitch. At the time, FIFA urged federations to focus on the football. As in Saudi Arabia, homosexuality in Qatar is also punishable by execution. In its evaluation of the Saudi bid, FIFA scored the counrty 4.2 points out a possible 5, the highest score earned by any country in the organizations history. Neither the bid nor FIFAs evaluation mentioned LGBTQ+ rights specifically, and the football organization was vague in addressing the issue. As part of the Human Rights Strategy, the bidder commits to ensuring a secure and inclusive tournament environment free from discrimination through the implementation of policies, procedures and educational measures to address discrimination in the tournament context, the evaluation stated. Human rights groups accused FIFA of complicity in Saudi Arabias abuses. As expected, FIFAs evaluation of Saudi Arabias World Cup bid is an astonishing whitewash of the countrys atrocious human rights record, Steve Cockburn, Amnesty Internationals head of labor rights and sport, told the Athletic. There are no meaningful commitments that will prevent workers from being exploited, residents from being evicted, or activists from being arrested.By ignoring the clear evidence of severe human-rights risks, FIFA is likely to bear much responsibility for the violations and abuses that will take place over the coming decade, Cockburn added. The victims of those violations include LGBTQ+ Saudis subject to the countrys lethal penalty for same-sex behavior. There is substantial evidence of the law being enforced in recent years, with LGBT people being frequently subject to arrest some of those arrested have been executed by authorities, wrote the Human Dignity Trust, a charity providing legal protections to the LGBTQ+ community globally. In its evaluation, FIFA rated Saudi Arabias human rights record as medium risk.Said one Saudi womens rights activist, We cannot say that Saudi Arabia is a medium risk country, given that it has become a pure police state.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

From scissoring to butch/femme dynamics, everyone and their mother thinks they get to have an opinion on Sapphic sex hint: they dont! but one queer comedian says that what we really should be focusing on is how awkward using a strap-on can be.Comedian Bridget Foleys recent stand-up routine at Club Cumming during this years New York Comedy Festival featured a bit about the ego death she experiences every time she dons a strap-on in the bedroom. My entire experience with strap-ons is colored by ego death, Foley deadpans. You know, some folks, they get in that thing, they feel really confident, she jokes. Im waddling around the room like a dog in a Halloween costume, she said as the audience cackled.Like girl, no one is convinced the chihuahua could ever be the sheriff. But its a nice idea. Montana Supreme Court Upholds Injunction against Gender-Affirming Care Ban Pending Trial
Subscribe nowby Blair Miller, Daily MontananTransgender rights protesters outside the Montana State Capitol on Monday, April 24 2023. (Photo by Blair Miller, Daily Montanan) TNow that the states appeal of the preliminary injunction, which has been in place since September 2023, has been resolved, the full case will continue to trial in Missoula County District Court to determine whether Senate Bill 99 is unconstitutional.I will never understand why my representatives are working to strip me of my rights and the rights of other transgender kids, one of the plaintiffs, Phoebe Cross, a 17-year-old transgender boy, said in a statement. Just living as a trans teenager is difficult enough, the last thing me and my peers need is to have our rights taken away.Six of seven justices signed on to the majority opinion, written by Justice Beth Baker. Justices Laurie McKinnon and Ingrid Gustafson wrote a concurring opinion in which they criticized the court for not deciding some of the state constitutions equal protection clause claims at hand, including whether discrimination on the basis of transgender status constitutes sex discrimination.Justice Jim Rice concurred that SB 99 should be enjoined, except for a portion that prohibits Medicaid funding for gender-affirming care since there is no current federal mandate that Medicaid fund such care.Plaintiffs in the case include Molly and Paul Cross, of Bozeman, and their transgender son, Phoebe, and Jane and John Doe, who joined the suit on behalf of their 16-year-old transgender daughter. They also include two medical providers of gender-affirming care. Another plaintiff in the case was dismissed in September after turning 18, according to court filings.Defendants include the State of Montana, Gov. Greg Gianforte, Attorney General Austin Knudsen, the boards of nursing and medical examiners, the Department of Public Health and Human Services and its director, Charlie Brereton. The state appealed Missoula County District Court Judge Jason Markss decision to issue a preliminary injunction on the claims that the plaintiffs did not have standing to challenge the bill and that the district court had erred in issuing the preliminary injunction against the entire bill. In September 2023, Marks found that the plaintiffs were at risk of facing severe psychological distress if they were blocked from receiving gender-affirming care.Subscribe nowIn response to the Supreme Courts decision Wednesday, Gianforte, a Republican, said he was deeply disappointed the injunction was upheld pending the trial.Children who struggle with gender identity deserve love, compassion, and respect. They deserve no ridicule, animus, or seclusion, the governor said in a written statement. They are entitled to protection, not exploitation. While their young minds and bodies are still developing, they should not be subjected to experimental and permanent, life-altering medical and surgical procedures.During the district court hearing and in briefs, the plaintiffs submitted expert witness reports showing that the use of puberty-delaying medications and gender-affirming hormone therapy were World Professional Association for Transgender Health standards of care for treating gender dysphoria, and that surgery is rarely recommended under those same standards, the Supreme Court noted. The bill, established as the Montana Youth Protection Act, bans the use of things like puberty blockers and surgeries, generally called gender-affirming care by medical professionals, for Montana youth experiencing gender dysphoria, a condition where a person feels their biological sex does not match their identity. The bill also would open medical professionals who perform any gender-affirming care outlined in the bill to potential discipline by the licensing board, including a one-year suspension of their license. The measure also allows a parent or guardian of a child to sue a medical professional for damages and does not allow Medicaid or childrens health insurance program money to go back to families for reimbursement. The court found the plaintiffs do have standing because the state had already conceded that Phoebe Cross had standing during the district court hearing, and precedent says that if one plaintiff has standing, a claim can proceed. Further, the court wrote, the medical-professional plaintiffs face a threat to their ability to practice medicine under the law, which the court said was a concrete injury. On whether the district court erred in ordering a preliminary injunction based on the plaintiffs privacy claim under the Montana Constitution, the court agreed with the district courts analysis that the Supreme Courts 1999 finding in Armstrong vs. State applied.Though the State has a compelling interest in safeguarding the physical and psychological wellbeing of a minor, a statute implicating their privacy rights must be narrowly tailored to serve that interest, the court wrote. SB 99 affords no room for decision-making by a patient in consultation with their doctors and parents. The statute is a complete ban, prohibiting individualized care tailored to the needs of each patient based on the exercise of professional medical judgment and informed consent. The majority opinion goes on to say that the district court had not abused its discretion when it found that the plaintiffs had made an adequate preliminary showing of harm to warrant the preservation of their rights in status quo pending a full trial.Filings before the Supreme Court from both sides of the case cited similar and ongoing cases moving forward throughout the country, including at the U.S. Supreme Court, surrounding the Equal Protection Clauses in both the U.S. and Montana constitutions including orders and opinions that have happened since the district court hearing last year. But the state Supreme Court said the district courts conclusions based solely on Montanas privacy protections were sufficient to uphold the preliminary injunction and that the parties would be able to fully brief and use expert witnesses to make their full argument during a district court trial.McKinnons concurrence, which Gustafson joined, said while there is still much to be litigated in the rest of the case, the full court ignored the equal protection arguments from both sides and left the parties and the district court without necessary guidance on questions of law entirely appropriate for this Court to address at this juncture. She said most of the two sides arguments involve equal protection issues surrounding the nature of sex and class discrimination that would apply only under Montanas constitution and not necessarily under the federal clause. McKinnon wrote that with the U.S. Supreme Court considering a similar case under the federal constitution, the district court in Missoula deserves guidance on which hurdles the plaintiffs would need to clear to succeed on their claim of discrimination on the basis of sex.By declining to engage with this question now, we leave this critical definition open to lock-stepping by complicity in whatever direction the United States Supreme Court decides to take, McKinnon wrote. This Court should take the opportunity to clearly state that discrimination based on sex as explicitly contained in the equal protection clause includes discrimination on the basis of transgender status.Incoming Senate President Matt Regier, R-Kalispell, said in a statement that the court had sided with liberals at the expense of common sense.Children should not be undergoing irreversible, life-altering transgender procedures, Regier said. The Montana Legislature will keep fighting for Montanans against this woke craziness and keep fighting to rein in our out-of-control branch of government.Lambda Legal Counsel Kell Olson, from one of the law firms representing the plaintiffs, said in a statement that the Montana Supreme Court understands the danger of the state interfering with critical healthcare.Because Montanas constitutional protections are even stronger than their federal counterparts, transgender youth in Montana can sleep easier tonight knowing that they can continue to thrive for now, without this looming threat hanging over their heads, Olson said in a statement.Editors note: This story has been updated to include more detail on McKinnons concurrence and a statement from incoming Senate President Matt Regier. If objective, nonpartisan, rigorous, LGBTQ-focused journalism is important to you, please consider making a tax-deductible donation through our fiscal sponsor, Resource Impact, by clicking this button:Donate to Uncloseted Media

GOP-led county takes control of library spurring fears of book bans
In a highly contentious move, the Republican-led Warren County Virginia Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 earlier this week to take control of Samuels Public Library after local community members pushed back against book bans, The Washington Post reports.Nearly 100 residents of the local community attended a six-hour hearing discussing whether to take control of the county board; the vast majority of residents wanted to keep the current leadership. The Republican heads of the county, however, opted to establish a library board appointed by the county to handle its policies, budget, and management. Related Americas public schools were created to spread white Christian nationalism. Has anything changed? We need to place the current counteroffensive on education into historical perspective. Samuels Public Library has previously been honored as Virginias 2024 Library of the Year and received a $500,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation. The library is currently exploring all options, including obtaining private funding, so that it is no longer dependent on the county. The community has been outraged at the takeover. Chip Stewart, who launched a Change.org petition in protest of the Boards actions, told The Advocate, Things were looking good for the librarys future. But now, the trouble is returning. That is a suffocating supermajority, said resident Luke Marrazzo told The Washington Post, connecting the proposal to the election by underscoring the recent calls for accountability and efficiency that define this new era in America that was just elected It is also participating in a sweeping nationwide movement. Link arms and lock shields with a mandate handed to you in no uncertain terms. Return the power and the voice of the people.Resident Mark Nelson told the board, Its the library of the year. You guys tried to ban some gay books, got beat, now this. Everybody knows the truth. Let it be.While the last election signaled the American people want less government, the supervisors seem to be moving in the opposite direction of the voters. Simply put, this proposal represents creeping government overreach, said resident and Marine Corps veteran Joe Plenzler to The Washington Post. Jamieson, however, had other ideas. There are reasonable indications that savings of hundreds of thousands of dollars are plausible if the Warren County Library Board went into a competitive procurement process, he told the hearings attendees. He also claimed that they had no plans to ban any books, which was met with immense skepticism from the public. The library had previously engaged in a feud with the Republican officials over their attempt to ban books. They engaged in a series of compromises with them, including allowing for additional parental oversight, thus protecting books from being removed from the shelves.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Mysterious gay murder trial reaches unexpected conclusion
The judge presiding over the capital murder trial of Sheldon Timothy Herrington Jr. the 24-year-old accused of killing a fellow former University of Mississippi student in 2022 declared a mistrial on Wednesday. After nine and a half hours of deliberation, the jury remained deadlocked, 11-1. Circuit Court Judge Kelly Luther didnt share which way jurors were leaning. Related Prosecutors introduce damning evidence in mysterious case of gay students murder Investigators say that Sheldon Timothy Herrington Jr. made suspicious purchases and web searches before his hook-up disappeared. Herrington, 24, was accused of killing Jimmy Jay Lee after evidence indicated the two had a sexual encounter at Lees apartment in Oxford, where Ole Miss is located, on July 8, 2022. Lee vanished the same day. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Lee, who was 20 at the time of his disappearance, went silent on social media and had no contact with friends or family in the aftermath of the mens encounter. A judge declared Lee dead earlier this year at his parents request.Prosecutors havent said if theyll seek a retrial. Herrington remains free on bond and is still charged in the crime. He showed little emotion as he left the packed courtroom, the Associated Press reported. The case against him was damning.Surveillance video showed Herrington running from where Lees car was found abandoned at an apartment complex near Herringtons residence the same day that Lee disappeared and where the last signal from Lees phone was detected. The defendant was later seen picking up a shovel and wheelbarrow at his parents house, prosecutors said.Herrington purchased duct tape, rubber gloves, and trash bags from a local Walmart the same day, and an acrylic fingernail was discovered in Herringtons apartment placing Lee there. Prosecutors said Herrington gave conflicting statements during two interviews about Lees disappearance. Police first interviewed Herrington in his apartment, when he said he knew Lee but did not have any kind of sexual relationship with him, Shane Fortner, one of the officers involved, testified. In the second interview at an Oxford police station, after Herrington was advised of his rights, he said he and Lee had a deeper relationship and that they had a sexual encounter just hours before Lee disappeared.Unlike Lee, Herrington was not out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, according to prosecutors.Assistant District Attorney Gwen Agho said during opening arguments that messages shared between the two men indicated Lee was upset after they had sexual contact and he left Herringtons apartment.Herrington invited Lee back, Agho said; before his arrival, Herrington looked online for how long it takes to strangle someone, according to his search history. Lee was pursuing a masters degree in fashion, according to support group called Justice for Jay Lee. Lee was also a popular drag performer in Oxford.Jury deliberations were fraught from the outset; they sent two messages to the judge requesting guidance. He advised them they could consider lesser charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, or manslaughter. Still, they remained deadlocked.Capital murder in Mississippi is defined as a killing committed along with another felony, in this case, kidnapping.Prosecutors said at trial they wouldnt seek the death penalty.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Coming out is better than being outed, she wrote, according to the Guardian. I hope to show courage, and to take another step towards the destigmatisation of people who have become infected with HIV due to their actions or through no fault of their own. To my fans: the information about my HIV-status may be new to you [but nothing about me has changed]! Im healthy and well, and Im stronger, more motivated and liberated than ever. Thank you for your support!Oliver SimOliver Sim, singer and bass guitarist for the British indie pop band the xx, kept his HIV-positive status under wraps until 2022, when he released a solo project with a single about his complex feelings about living with HIV since his diagnosis at age 17. The single, Hideous, off of his first solo album Hideous Bastard, was the first time he ever publicly discussed living with HIV. In a letter to fans that accompanied the album's release, Sim wrote, Two thirds in, having a good idea of what the record was about, I realized Id been circling around one of the things that has probably caused me the most fear and shame. My HIV status. Ive been living with HIV since I was 17 and its played with how Ive felt towards myself, and how Ive assumed others have felt towards me, from that age and into my adult life.Greg LouganisOlympic gold medalist Greg Louganis contracted HIV in the late 80s at the height of the AIDs crisis during a time when most people had to hide their status due to stigma and few people survived. He immediately went on antivirals, but in 1993 his health began to fail and he gathered his friends and family to say a final goodbye. Luckily he survived and in 1994 he came out as gay at the Gay Games and in 1995 he spoke publicly for the first time about his HIV-positive status in an interview with Barbara Walters during the real of his memoir Breaking the Surface.Louganis went on to become an LGBTQ+ activist and HIV awareness advocate and now spends his time fighting for LGBTQ+-inclusive mental health resources and support for older queer people living with HIV, according to Healthline.OnginaSee on InstagramRuPaul's Drag Race star Ongina spoke out for the first time about living with HIV on an episode of the first season of the popular reality competition show. It was such a defining moment in my life because once the words came out of my mouth, I felt a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. I felt free to live my life without holding back to letting people know who I am entirely.

And judging from his appearance in Brookline, Waters has a lot on his mind, starting with the makeup of the new Trump administration. On the night of the Coolidge event, former congressman Matt Gaetz had just withdrawn from consideration to be President-elect Donald Trumps attorney general, and Waters didnt quite know what to make of it. They must have found something really bad about him, he said. He doesnt even wear eyeliner. His advice to Democrats and others who didnt want Trump to win the election: Stop whining. Just get ready, get ready.Hes perplexed by the rules regarding what people can say on TV these days: You can say f**k on national television, but you cant say fat on PBS.Hes not sure about a certain personal grooming product: Anal bleachwho would do that? he wondered. What is the color youre after? Do you have to do the roots? Not all of Waters musings were in the form of a question. With Christmas around the corner, he knows what people should give as presents:Give every person on your list books, he advised. Dont give them gift cards. Theyll think youre stupid. He knows for sure that the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz was gay: Hes butch and a coward. Hes a power bottom or a blouse thats a feminine top.He asked Divine to do just one take of the final scene in his 1972 film Pink Flamingos where his character eats dog droppings: Only one! Im not a sadist! John Waters won the Coolidge Award for original, challenging workJohn Waters receives the Coolidge Award at the Coolidge Corner Theatre on November 21, 2024 | Iz Indelicato/Coolidge Corner TheatreThis was the 20th year of the Coolidge Award, which recognizes an artist whose work is consistently original and challenging. The Coolidge Corner Theatre is an independent cinema and cultural institution with four screens and the capacity to seat more than 700 people. The original structure was built in 1906 as a Universalist church, transformed in the 1930s to an Art Deco movie palace and recently expanded.Since 1989, Coolidge Corner Theatre has been operated by a non-profit organization, the Coolidge Theatre Foundation, known for its contemporary independent film, repertory and educational programming. Past recipients of the Coolidge Award include Meryl Streep; Jonathan Demme; Michael Douglas; Julianne Moore; Liv Ullmann; Ruth E. Carter; Jane Fonda; Viggo Mortensen and Werner Herzog, among others. We cant think of a more brilliant artist to celebrate for the Coolidge Awards 20thanniversary than John Waters, said Coolidge Program Director Mark Anastasio. His movies have long been a staple of our programming, and his filmography remains one of the funniest, filthiest and most subversive in cinema history. Waters, 78, has written and directed 16 films, from so-called celluloid atrocities such as Female Trouble and Multiple Maniacs to more mainstream fare such as Hairspray and Serial Mom. Hes written 10 books, includingShock Value,Role Models, andCarsick. The ultimate multi-tasker, hes also a visual artist, fashion model, voiceover actor, camp counselor and popular graduation speaker. Next spring, hell teach a masterclass on filmmaking as part of a college course on Film Directors and Authorship. To celebrate the Coolidge Award, Waters took part in what amounted to three events in one at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, starting at 3 p.m. and ending just before 11 p.m. First was a screening of his 2000 black comedy Cecil B. Demented, with an introduction by the filmmaker and remarks after the movie ended. Second was a fast-paced conversation with Bowen, followed by the presentation of the Coolidge Award. Third was the Group Therapy session with superfans who paid extra to meet with Waters in a smaller theater upstairs at the Coolidge Center. All of the proceeds went to the non-profit that runs and programs the arts center. At another prestigious ceremony this year the 74thannual American Cinema Editors Eddie Awards in Los Angeles, where he received the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award Waters delivered a speech in which he discussed his approach to film editing, before an attentive audience of movie industry professionals. Speaking at the historic Royce Theater on the UCLA campus, he talked about everything from deciding when to cut a scene from a movie to the influence of a censor board and also the use of songs instead of narration to convey plot points. The Coolidge event was geared more to the general public than to film editors. There was no lengthy acceptance speech, just Waters brief, heartfelt, Thank you so very much, it means a lot to me, with no irony, for real. He didnt perform his holiday spoken-word show. He pretty much just graciously responded to questions and used them as a springboard to talk about a wide range of subjects on his mind, in the sort of stream-of-consciousness outpouring of wit and wisdom that fans have come to expect from him. Some of his remarks were about topics hes addressed before; others pertained to news of the day or subjects he doesnt usually address in his spoken-word shows, such as his admiration for the artist Cy Twombly. For anyone who went to all three segments of the Coolidge celebration, and many did, it was like watching several of the sit-down interviews that Waters does with Bill Maher unscripted, free-wheeling, bouncing from one subject to another. It was also a good look at a talented performer at the top of his game. That was his Thank You speech, essentially. His mix of facts and commentary was all the more illuminating because it was so wide-ranging and spontaneous.During Waters appearance in Brookline, certain subjects came up more than once, including the holidays, films and filmmaking, his family, his obsessions, the old days, the future. And as the author of a book titledMr. Know-It-All: The Tarnished Wisdom of a Filth Elder,he couldnt refrain from offering a bit of advice. With the holidays in mind, he had a suggestion for party hosts: If you want to know whos snooping in your medicine cabinet, he said, put some marbles on the shelves and then close the door. When the snoop opens the cabinet, the marbles will roll out and make noise and then youll know. If you have a party, you should do that, he said. For people going to see a movie on a date, he advised, choose the location wisely. This is a theater, he said, looking around the Coolidges main auditorium. This is a church, this theatreIf you go to a regular mall theater, youre not going to get laid but you might here.He doesnt advise young people to take acid, even though he wrote inMr. Know-It-Allabout doing so at age 70. I dont tell young people to take acid. I tell old people to. They can say its not dementia, Im tripping! Waters also had plenty to say about filmmakingJohn Waters speaks the Coolidge Award at the Coolidge Corner Theatre on November 21, 2024 | Iz Indelicato/Coolidge Corner TheatreMy films were never mainstream, he said, but they always had an audienceEven in church basements we sold out.He had a good reason for showing his early films in a church: I knew I couldnt get busted in a church. He knows who came to see his early films and still come: Minorities that dont fit in with their own minorities. Thats my core audience. He believes theres a fine line between bad taste and good taste: Bad taste and good taste are very close. And sometimes theyre exactly the same. Two celebrities with whom hed like to make a movie: Meryl Streep and Eminem.Hairspray, the 1988 movie in which a pleasantly plump teenager teaches a whole city about integration, was the most radical thing I ever didIts a Trojan horseEven the racists like Hairspray, he said.Theres no such thing as bad publicity except when you have to go to the doctors office and others in the waiting room ask whats wrong with you: As Gore Vidal once said [about bad publicity], You know what is worse? When it stops. As for the status of a possible movie version of his 2022 novel,Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance: Waters has written the script for a film adaptation of his book and confirmed Aubrey Plaza as the potential star, but it hasnt been funded. Hes exasperated that audiences keeping asking about it when there are no new developments. There is not one new thing to say about it, he said in response to a question from the audience. I said it six months ago and nothings changed. We dont have the money to make it now. Could that change tomorrow? Maybe. The film industry is going through a period of uncertainty, he said: Right now its very hard to get a movie made. Theres no one who can say yes. Everyone is in panic mode right now. Waters anticipated that historian Henry Louis Gates Jr. was going to discover a slaveowner among his ancestors when he agreed in 2021 to appear on the PBS genealogy series, Finding Your Roots: I knew they were going to find slaves. I grew up in the South.Gates often finds slaveowners in the backgrounds of celebrities; it seems to be a running theme of his program. But Waters arguably didnt come across as badly as the other person who appeared on the same program that he did, actress Glenn Close. They found more slaves in her family, he noted. I was relieved.Waters thinks his late father had reason to regret naming him John Waters Jr. After he began making movies, he said, My father got all the phone calls in the middle of the night. Hes grateful his parents supported him the way they did.Did I ever think that the Academy [Museum of Motion Pictures] would give me a show of 12 rooms to myself? No. But did I ever think that was impossible? No. I was raised to believe that anything I could do, I could. My parents did give me that. They made me feel safe. Thats all I asked, he said.Waters doesnt like it when reporters ask at the end of an interview: Is there anything else that youd like to say that I didnt ask about? No. Thats not the way it works. If he has to tell a reporter what questions to ask, he said, I should get part of your salary. He wont hire anyone who says certain words in an interview: If an actor ever uses the word journey, I dont hire them. He feels the same way about the word humble.Waters on artistic influences, cancel culture, & staying in ones hometownWaters greatly admires the late Andy Warhol, saying he was a huge influence on him.Of course he was an influence. Hes an influence on every artist thats working in America today, Waters said. He was brilliantAndy invented branding, almost.Among other feats, Waters said, Warholbrought drugs and gay people together at last. That was very important, because gay people were square before Andy.Warhol offered to pay for the filming of Female Trouble, but Waters declined: I said nobecause it would have been Andy Warhols Female TroubleI knew enough to say no.Despite that, Warhol put Divine on the cover ofInterviewmagazine. He was supportive of us, always, Waters said. He was a friend to me, and I have very good memories of him. View this post on Instagram A post shared by CY TWOMBLY ABSTRACT ART (@cytwombly_)Waters said Twombly, known for his bold brushstrokes, squiggly lines and shaky handwriting, is definitely my favorite artist. Waters once took the corner of an envelope on which Twombly had written his return address and hung it on the wall as a work of art.I got to know him and I love him because his first scribbles were so shocking that people would throw them away, those first blackboard paintings. They would be worth millions of dollars now.Twomblys abstract art made peopleso mad, which I love, Waters said. Some people thought his art was nothing but scribbles, but try doing them. Its impossible to imitate himAll good art ruined what came beforeThats my view on art. A visual artist himself, Waters said he also respects Maurizio Cattelan, the Italian artist who sold a banana duct-taped to a wall at auction for $6.2 million. (The buyer, Hong Kong-based crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun, later ate the fruit, saying, It tastes much better than other bananas. Indeed, quite good.)Good for him, Waters said. Its conceptual art, and I dont understand why that pisses people offI think whoever bought it is brave and smart and I think its great. Thats what art is an idea. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Maurizio Cattelans banana (@cattelanbanana)Waters always puts in a good word for his hometown of Baltimore, where he still has his main residence. But he thinks the city is missing an opportunity in the way it markets itself. He once proposed a bumper sticker that acknowledges the citys quirks and foibles: Come to Baltimore and Be Shocked! Now he has a suggestion for two more slogans that acknowledge the less-than-inviting reputation it got as the setting for HBOs crime drama series, The Wire. Its still like The Wire, he said. I think we should have bumper stickers that say that: The Wire: Its Still Like That. Or: Id Turn Back If I Were You.Waters told the audience that Baltimore is still a cool place to live. He calls it a new Bohemia.First of all, the young cool kids dont leave, and If they do, they come back, he said. And second, its cheap. So theres dangerous streets that are opening good restaurants. Theres bad neighborhoods where gay people can move in and make it betterYou can buy a manor in Guilford, the fancy neighborhood, for what an efficiency apartment costs in New York. And its easy to get everywhere. Waters said he thinks that everybody should stay where they were born and never leave, that they should embrace where they came from.It would be the greatest country ever, he said. You just stay where you are and make it betterIt used to be you had to go to New York, especially to see certain movies. But now, you can live anywhere. You can live in Des Moines, Iowa. Nothing against that either.Cities are very different today, with the internet and everything, he said. There is less local color because everywhere is more like [everywhere else]. I live in airports, so when I come to a city, I could be anywhere. The hotels are the same. The stores are the same, everything. Maybe thats good. Then every person in that town can maybe watch a weird movie, see a Gaspar Noe movie. You dont have to go to New York to see it. Looking back on his career, Waters insists his sense of humor hasnt changed Im exactly the same but over time other peoples sense of humor got pulled in my direction. He thinks he knows why he hasnt been canceled the way some entertainers have: I always tried to make people laugh, he said. Im not mean-spirited. I think thats why Ive lasted this long.Having a sense of humor is the key: Ifyou have a sense of humor about yourself, youll be accepted eventually through humor. Several days after the award ceremony, Waters embarked on a coast-to-coast tour of holiday shows, called A John Waters Christmas. The tour is taking him to more than dozen cities between December 1 and December 19.Waters told the audience hes not slowing down largely because he keeps getting job offers a fashion campaign for Saint Laurent here, voiceover work for Nordstrom there, a gallery show on the West Coast, his year-end 10 Best Movies list for Vulture.com. Many of his stage appearances are pegged to anniversaries of his movies. He said hes a carny like his idol, the director William Castle. He dreams up ideas in the morning and sells them in the afternoon. The last questioner of the night asked Waters what his secret is, how he finds the energy to keep going.I dont know how I cantNOTdo them, he replied, when theyre offered and Im alive.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

HBO & Max just canceled 'Sesame Street' and everyone's worried about Bert & Ernie's future
Warner Bros. Discovery has announced its next casualty, and this one really hurts. We're saying goodbye to Sesame Street.According to The Hollywood Reporter, WBD declined to renew the long-running children's show for a 56th season. "As weve launched Max though and based on consumer usage and feedback, weve had to prioritize our focus on stories for adults and families, and so new episodes from Sesame Street, at this time, are not as core to our strategy," a spokesperson said.Sesame Street was previously saved by HBO nearly a decade ago after PBS could no longer afford the first-run licensing fee. Episodes began initially airing on HBO before hitting PBS months later. In 2020 the show bounced to HBO Max (now just...Max), and in 2022, the newly formed Warner Bros. Discovery merger resulted in 200 episodes being removed from the streamer's library. It's a decision that didn't go over well with the general public, but one that became par for the course under CEO David Zaslav. Zaslav has become notorious for the company shelving movies before they're released, yanking shows with little to no warning, and making WBD a place many worry is hostile to both creativity and diversity.Pulling the plug on an iconic show like Sesame Street certainly isn't helping that image, especially as the program had only grown more inclusive in recent years, featuring out gay celebrities, having a gay couple on the block, and celebrating Pride Month on social media. And now HBO Max is done with it? Yeah, somehow that's not too surprising... (@) (@) (@) (@) (@) (@) The good news here is that WBD doesn't actually own Sesame Street, leaving it open for another network or streamer to pick it up and it seems as if there's an expectation that will indeed happen. But in the meantime, this just reads as yet another short-sighted decision from the folks over at Warner Bros. Discovery.

Transgender Men Experience Eating Disorders at Alarmingly High Rates. Why?
Justin Wee for Uncloseted Media / NRD for Unsplash Editor's note: This story deals with topics such as eating disorders and self harm which may be distressing for some readers. If you need help with an eating disorder, resources can be found at The National Eating Disorders Association. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts or a mental health crisis, call or text Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: 988.On a hazy morning in April 2022, Daniel-Jos Cyan opens his deserted fridge to find a single piece of moldy mozzarella cheese. He holds it up to the light and, knowing he has to eat something, goes against his better judgment and takes a bite.Subscribe nowI would go a long time without eating because I thought it would help me lose weight. And then I had to eat at some point because I wasn't physically well, Cyan, a 27-year-old living in the Bronx, told Uncloseted Media. Even looking in the fridge can cause me to shut down.Cyan, who wound up getting food poisoning from eating the cheese, struggles with an eating disorder. And hes not alone. 7 in 10 transgender people aged 18-24 experience an eating disorder. These disorders are so pervasive in the LGBTQ community that the Biden administration earlier this month awarded a multi-million dollar grant to psychologists pioneering identity-affirming eating disorder treatment for LGBTQ people.Trans men experience even higher rates of eating disorders than their female counterparts and the highest rates of any demographic group, according to a 2023 study from the National Library of Medicine. Experts say trans people disproportionately struggle with eating disorders because they face body dysmorphia, societal stigma, and a deep desire for control amidst a world that often feels hostile and invalidating. For trans men, this is compounded by the gendered expectations of being raised as a girl, and thenonce they transitionthe isolation and stigma that men who experience eating disorders often face.According to a guide for providers who treat trans patients, trans men may develop an eating disorder in a quest to look more masculine by reducing curves and breast size, and lose their period. By engaging in eating disorder behaviors and modifying their bodies, their goal is to appear more masculine as an intent to reduce gender dysphoria and distress, Anne Marie OMelia writes in the guide. Eating disorders are rooted in control, Lydia Rhino, program director at The Eating Disorder Foundation, told Uncloseted Media. Its scary to be a trans person in the United States. When theres no safety or acceptance in a lot of places, eating disorders are a way to express, I can't control what other people are doing outside of me, but I can control this.In 2024, trans rights are under attack. President-elect Donald Trump won the White House largely on a campaign of anti-trans rhetoric with ads announcing his opponent, Kamala Harris, as being for They/Them, while President Trump is for You. In addition, there are hundreds of anti-trans bills sweeping through state legislatures, and last month Speaker of the House Mike Johnson banned transgender women from using restrooms that match their gender identity on Capitol Hill.On top of political animus and transphobia, Rhino says body dysmorphia also plays a role, and it is not surprising trans men are the most susceptible group. If you have lived in a body that does not feel like yours, where people have identified you one way, and you know that it didn't feel accurate, why would your body be something that you respect and treat well?, says Rhino.Eating disorders can be the management of gender dysphoria, they numb out emotions and give you something different to focus on so you're not thinking about the transphobia you're experiencing, and for a lot of people, they change the [way your body looks] without using hormones or surgery because they can slow puberty, Emmy Johnson, a therapist who specializes in LGBTQ people with eating disorders, told Uncloseted Media.Justin Wee for Uncloseted MediaCyan has restricted his food intake and binged for nearly 20 years. I have struggled in my relationship to food since childhood. When I was in the fifth grade, I was heavily teased and bullied by my peers, my teachers and my family for my weight, he says, adding that this made him learn to hate himself.I counted calories, I avoided meals, and food became equal to fatness and that, to me, was one of the worst things you could be, he says. Food became a thing for survival. I ate because being hungry would make me physically sick. I always thought I had some sort of anorexia, but according to a nutritionist Im seeing, its called binge-restrict eating disorder.Natalie Allen, an eating disorder therapist at Toronto Psychology and Wellness Group, says that one of the reasons people raised as girls statistically experience more eating disorders than cisgender men is because of socialization. [People assigned female at birth] have historically received a lot more pressure to maintain specific physical beauty standards and ideals, she says.Justin Wee for Uncloseted MediaI didn't have a boyhood. I had a girlhood. Thats how I was taught to understand my body and food, because there were these impossible beauty standards of what it meant to be a girl, says Cyan. Subscribe nowHe remembers sitting on his couch at nine years old and watching Girl Code on MTV where they suggested viewers chew ice cubes and imagine them as food as a diet tip. I was like, This feels like the right thing, and maybe I could finally lose weight. There's just so much pressure to fit into a role, Rhino says. So it's one area that a trans person can be like, If I can change my body and make my body look this way, then I can communicate to people that this is who I am, and how I identify. A lot of it has to do with the social pressure to fit into a box.As Cyan went through puberty and his body began to change, his disorder escalated and was at its worst as a teenager. I would spend the entire day not eating and waiting to see how long I could go before I fainted, he says. [Passing out] was a goal of mine. But I thought to have an eating disorder, I had to be underweight, so it must not be that.Part of the barrier to recovery for trans men are the societal expectations of what kinds of people experience eating disorders. We have a problem understanding the problem of eating disorders in the United States, Doreen Marshall, executive director of the National Eating Disorder Association, told Uncloseted Media. Most people assume those impacted are young, white, thin, and female. [But] only 6% of people who struggle with eating disorders are clinically underweight. When somebody who is not that model then has to navigate recovery in the real world, they're also having to navigate this landscape that doesn't see them as a person who is impacted.Cisgender, white women are the most likely to be asked about eating disorders by their doctors and receive treatment. Men have reported struggling to feel understood by therapists, feeling unwanted in the treatment environment and that their concerns are not taken into account. This means a lot of menand especially trans menare left untreated. If I am a trans person seeking treatment, even the providers I go to may carry some of that bias, says Marshall. That bias ultimately impacts whether I get care or not.Cyan experienced this bias when he was seeking gender-affirming care two years ago. When he went into the doctor to get evaluated for top surgery revision, his surgeon told him that he would not operate on him unless he lost weight and gave him no recommendations on how to do it.I didn't realize how big of a trigger it would be until I spiraled and spent the entire year restricting myself from eating until I wound up binging. My doctor had no idea I was already struggling with an eating disorder.Cyan found it easier to be open about his eating disorder when he was feminine presenting, but since he transitioned, he gets nervous talking about it. I feel like its taken less seriously because I look like a man, and its more embarrassing to have to deal with it as a man. When I was considering my gender, I always thought men don't have to care about what they look like. But that was not the case.Cyan says men are held to standards of fitness and pressure to be strong in a certain way.Uncloseted Media is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support our work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. There's a sense of fitness that is still expected when it comes to peak masculinity. Its to be muscular and strong and I thought thats what I needed to be.Justin Wee for Uncloseted MediaAfter Cyan got food poisoning from the expired cheese last year, he realized he needed to seek care. It was scary for me I felt alone because I didn't know how to have conversations about it.Eating disorders by nature are isolating, says Adee Levinstein, nutrition manager at The Eating Recovery Center. And being part of the trans community can also feel very isolating in our current world. She says it makes sense that they overlap.According to Johnson, the therapist who works with transgender folks, gender-affirming healthcare can help trans people struggling with eating disorders. I have seen how motivating it is for patients to receive gender-affirming care, they say. A lot of eating disorder recovery is about exploring and developing identity, and affirming gender identity is a critical part of that. When trans men receive gender-affirming care, studies point to a reduction in eating disorder behaviors. Another 2019 study found that when gender is affirmed and gender dysphoria is reduced, eating disorder symptoms decrease.Eating disorder recovery is not easy. Five decades of literature suggest that fewer than half of adults with eating disorders will recover.Johnson says that getting to the root of the problem, whether it is control, body image, body dysmorphia, or external factors, is essential. Recovery is not linear, they say. If you are not ready to pursue recovery, you still deserve support and we want to help you stay alive and reduce the harm that the eating disorder is causing you.Justin Wee for Uncloseted MediaFor Cyan, his recovery was complicated after he was told he had to lose weight in order to receive top surgery revision. He wound up opting for bariatric surgerywhich reduces the size of the stomach and changes the digestive system. This allowed him to feel more connected to his body. The newfound connection also helped him begin to recover from his eating disorder. Beyond the surgery, he has been in therapy for years, seeing a nutritionist, and also uses support groups online that help with recovery. I'm surprised with how much I ended up relying on groups. Many folks will remind me, You need to eat frequently, and that's how you end up a healthy weight, meeting your protein numbers and your hydration levels, not restricting yourself.Subscribe nowEarlier this summer, Cyan started up the burner in his kitchen for the first time in his new apartment. He grilled salmon and air-fried vegetables. While he still has the occasional thought of disordered eating, his relationship to food is improving. Im actually starting to enjoy cooking again, he says. My relationship with food is different. For so long, eating was something that I had to force myself to do because of how the eating disorder worked. Now that my self-esteem is higher, Im more decisive about the food that I'm putting into my body. At times, I still feel the need to binge or completely not eat, but mostly Im doing okay.If objective, nonpartisan, rigorous, LGBTQ-focused journalism is important to you, please consider making a tax-deductible donation through our fiscal sponsor, Resource Impact, by clicking this button:Donate to Uncloseted Media

Singer Tank says queer visibility is not an agenda to minimize Black masculinity
R&B singer and LGBTQ+ ally Tank is challenging the perception that a so-called gay agenda is an attack on Black masculinity. On the December 3 episode of the Holdin Court podcast, the singer who made headlines in 2019 for saying that same-sex experimentation doesnt necessarily make men gay explained why he thinks the homosexual conversation among Black men is a mess. Related Actor Jermelle Simon gushes about his perfect boyfriend 2 months after coming out Simon said he skipped the line a little bit and has already found the one. The phobia as it relates to Black men is the elephant in the room, Tank told hosts Big Court and Rachel Rene, and no one will actually articulate their devastation. The first thing somebody is going to allude to, whether you are gay or not, when they are trying to assassinate your character or get off the highest joke imaginable theyre going gay first.Tank went on to suggest that something within our culture has created a stigma around homosexuality, which he said stems from the perception that somehow there is a program to make Black men gay.You see it everywhere, he said. There is an attack on strong Black men. But whos the attack coming from?Big Court suggested that the perception of this so-called gay agenda may come from the fact that LGBTQ+ people are now more visible in media.Back in our generation were the exact same age we didnt see homosexuality, the host said. Its been around since the beginning of time, but it was your aunties friend, your uncles friend. But now its more in your face, its more acceptable, its more mainstream, actually trendy.Rene noted that plenty of Black men in music have been celebrated for their androgynous style, from Prince to Rick James. That was in the context of entertainment, Big Court said. Its showmanship. So, whereas we never saw anyone like that in real life.We celebrated that. We owned it, Tank said of androgynous style. It wasnt an attack or an assassination on anything. He went on to shut down the idea that queer visibility represents an agenda to minimize Black masculinity or heterosexuality. No disrespect to homosexuality, Ive never seen anything that made me say, Oh wow, I wanna be gay. Im inspired to be gay, he said.Tank added that he understands homophobia because he was raised to believe that being gay was an abomination, and moved away from those beliefs. But the singer also asserted that his LGBTQ+ allyship doesnt compromise his faith. What I learned on my walk and on my journey is that all humans were created different, he explained, and the two things that every human being requires is grace and love. Every human deserves that. And once I got into that headspace I started looking at people differently. Former Abercrombie CEO says hes not competent to stand trial in sex trafficking case
Mike Jeffries, the former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch, is trying to delay his federal sex-trafficking case.As Business Insider reports, a spokesperson for the U.S. attorneys office of the Eastern District of New York said that Jeffriess attorneys asked a Manhattan judge on Monday to schedule a hearing to determine whether their client is competent to stand trial. Jeffriess attorney, Brian Bieber, confirmed the move in a statement. Related Ex-Abercrombie & Fitch CEO denies accusations he ran an international sex-trafficking ring A lawsuit alleges he lured over 100 aspiring models with cash, drugs, and jobs. Jeffries, who served as Abercrombes CEO from 1992 to 2014, was arrested in Florida along with his partner Matthew Smith and a third man in October. The three men allegedly ran an international sex-trafficking and prostitution business through which prosecutors say they coerced dozens of men into taking part in sex events. Subscribe to our Newsletter today While the indictment specifies that Jeffries and co.s crimes took place from 2008 to 2015, Breon Peace, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said they may stretch back as far as 1992. Many of the alleged victims were young men who hoped to become Abercrombie models. The 80-year-old Jeffries has vehemently denied all the allegations against him.Late last year, following a damning BBC documentary about his time as Abercrombies top executive, Jeffries and Smith were named in a civil class-action lawsuit that alleged they engaged in sex trafficking with over 100 young men in exchange for high-paying modeling gigs and other favors, in what the plaintiffs call a criminal enterprise run by Jeffries over two decades. The BBC doc alleged a network of middlemen was used to recruit potential victims for events in London, New York, Marrakesh, and other locations around the world between 2009 and 2015. Young men were reportedly paid thousands of dollars in cash after being instructed to engage in sexual acts with Jeffries and Smith or with one another. The lawsuit, meanwhile, also named Abercrombie & Fitch, claiming the company supported Jeffries alleged sex trafficking venture by authorizing unfettered access to corporate resources including a jet, transportation, and unlimited amounts of cash. The company responded saying that to the extent they occurred Jeffries illegal activities were carried out separate and apart from his work at A&F.In January, the FBI opened an investigation into the allegations of rampant sexual abuse and exploitation by Jeffries and Smith. At the time, the BBC reported that federal agents led by agents specializing in sex crimes and the U.S. Attorneys Office for the Eastern District of New York interviewed multiple witnesses and issued subpoenas. With federal prosecutors expected to challenge the move, the battle over whether Jeffries is competent to stand trial could extend pretrial proceedings into 2025.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Trans inmates are being forced to cut their hair short & undergo breast exams in Florida
The ACLU of Florida is suing the states Department of Corrections over a new anti-transgender policy that will restrict trans prisoners access to gender-affirming medical care as well as their ability to express their gender identity.According to a report from The Marshall Project and the Tampa Bay Times, a federal judge in Tallahassee held a preliminary hearing in the case on December 9. The ACLU of Florida has asked the judge to block enforcement of the policy, calling it an unconstitutional ban on gender-affirming care. A ruling is expected in the weeks ahead. Related Prison forces trans woman into solitary confinement at a mens facility Kim is on a hunger strike, and has been since Friday, demanding to be transferred back. Im just scared its gonna get a lot worse before it gets better, she said. Under the new policy, Florida prisons will only provide inmates diagnosed with gender dysphoria with therapy. Trans inmates will not have access to gender-affirming hormone therapy except in rare instances when it is deemed necessary to comply with the U.S. Constitution or a court decision. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Unaddressed psychiatric issues and unaddressed childhood trauma could lead to a misdiagnosis of gender dysphoria, the policy claims. Gender-affirming hormone therapy, it continues, may be requested by persons experiencing short-termed delusions or beliefs which may later be changed and reversed.Daniel Tilley, lead attorney from the ACLU of Florida, compared the policys therapy requirements to so-called conversion therapy. In court documents, Danny Martinez, the state prison systems medical director, said he based the departments new policies on a 2022 report commissioned by Floridas Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). The report focused primarily on the effects of gender-affirming care on children and its findings contradicted the overwhelming consensus of all major medical organizations, which hold that gender-affirming healthcare is necessary and frequently lifesaving for transgender individuals suffering from gender dysphoria. The 2022 report resulted in the state banning healthcare providers from billing the states Medicaid program for gender-affirming care. But in June 2023, a federal judge struck down the Florida Medicaid ban, finding that the AHCA report was a biased effort to justify a predetermined outcome, not a fair analysis of the evidence, and its conclusion was not supported by the evidence and was contrary to generally accepted medical standards. The Florida Department of Corrections new policy was announced in September during meetings in which incarcerated transgender women were told that trans inmates would be reevaluated to determine whether they would still be allowed access to gender-affirming healthcare and other accommodations that they were already receiving. According to the Tampa Bay Times, inmates said they were not told how prison officials would determine whether they would still be allowed access to care. While so far no inmates reported being taken off hormone therapy, more than a dozen incarcerated trans women told the paper they had already been forced to cut their hair short. In court filings and interviews, incarcerated trans women in Florida prisons also reported being subjected to breast examinations to determine whether or not they would still be allowed access to bras.It felt like I was being treated less than human, Josie Takach, a trans inmate at a Florida mens facility, said of the examination. Takach said her undergarments, now considered contraband, were confiscated. I feel like Im 12 years old again, sneaking around wearing a bra. Sara Maatsch, who is also incarcerated in a Florida mens prison, said that her gender dysphoria diagnosis was now considered a serious psychiatric illness. She was told she would have to be moved to a more restrictive facility with fewer work and programming opportunities to continue receiving treatment.Mariko Sundwall told The Marshall Project that after spending 10 days in solitary confinement for refusing to cut her hair, a prison barber buzzed her hair short while she was handcuffed.Im very sad and depressed. I feel like theyre taking away my identity, Jada Edwards, another trans inmate, said of the buzz cut she was forced to receive. As The Marshall Project notes, previous court decisions have held that prisons in the U.S. are required under the Constitution to provide gender-affirming care as needed.University of California San Francisco psychiatrist Dan Karasic, who helped develop international standards for treatment of transgender people, told The Marshal Project that Floridas new anti-trans prison policies were a fig leaf on [the states] efforts to ban gender-affirming care. They are really trying to skirt the law, as determined by multiple courts, that gender-affirming medical and surgical care must be provided when medically necessary, Karasic said. The battle over Floridas anti-trans prison policies follows the 2024 presidential campaign, which saw Donald Trumps campaign target Democratic nominee Kamala Harris with ads claiming the Vice President supports taxpayer-funded sex changes for prisoners.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

'Eight Times the Suicide Risk': Family Rejection is a Public Health Crisis for LGBTQ Youth
Photo courtesy of U.P. Nguyen. Design by Sam DonndelingerEditors note: This article includes mention of suicide and contains details about those who have attempted to take their own lives. If you are having thoughts of suicide, or are concerned that someone you know may be, resources are available here.In 2020, U.P. Nguyen called her mom in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with a secret she had kept for 23 years.Mom, Im gay.Her mom responded in Vietnamese, Nguyens native language.[She] said I was going to hell and that she wasnt sure what they did to deserve a daughter like me, Nguyen, a 26-year-old running coach and data engineer living in Boston and New York, told Uncloseted Media. Just thinking about it makes me tear up.Before the end of the call, Nguyens mother told her she was cut out of the will.Subscribe nowNguyen usually goes home to celebrate Christmas with her deeply religious parents, who have voted for President-elect Donald Trump three consecutive times, but she wont return this year.Photo courtesy of U.P. NguyenI don't really want to spend the holidays moping by myself, she told Uncloseted Media. I'm heartbroken. Ill miss a lot of things about being home. Ill miss my siblings. But I feel like I need to not go.Nguyens parents did not respond to Uncloseted Medias request for comment.Nguyens experience highlights a broader issue many LGBTQ people face: the struggle for family acceptance during the holidays. In the U.S., less than 40% of LGBTQ youth consider their homes affirming and over a quarter report daily tensions.Family rejection takes a significant mental health toll: LGBTQ people who experience high levels of rejection from their families are eight times more likely to attempt suicide. The pervasive familial rejection of queer people is a public health crisis and the severity of it is often downplayed. The lack of support from the family is contributing to despair, lack of hope, thoughts of taking their lives, substance abuse, and various other kinds of risks, says Caitlin Ryan, director of the Family Acceptance Project, a research and education initiative aimed at spreading awareness for LGBTQ family acceptance and mental health.Ryan, who co-founded the project in 2002, says that until her organization started this research, no one knew that there were a whole set of behaviors that were related to family acceptance and mental health [for LGBTQ people]. And even today, research is limited. For Nguyen, her parents rejection often makes her feel angry. Im pissed off, she says. A lot of my friends have it simpler. She says this rejection manifests in the everyday interactions that others take for granted. I was FaceTiming my mom and I was trying to show her that I was at my girlfriend's house I handed the phone over to her, and then my mom immediately hung up. It felt awful.Photo Credit: Family Acceptance ProjectWhile many LGBTQ folks feel this rejection daily, the holidays often amplify feelings of loneliness for those estranged from their families. Sixty-six percent of people report feeling lonely during the holidays, and 64% of individuals with mental health conditions say the season worsens their state, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.LGBTQ people throughout time have lived in a world that wasn't supportive, that often discriminated against them and was rejecting and victimizing. And so support is essential, says Ryan.Robin, who grew up in Southern California, says their upbringing was full of rejection because of their fathers treatment of them, their past partners and the LGBTQ community at large. The expectation has generally been that for the holiday seasons, everyone who has moved away from our hometown will come back and spend a few days there, says Robin, 26, who moved to northern California and asked to use a pseudonym out of a fear of blowback from their dad. I've done that once in the past five years and was very reluctant to do so.Robin, who is not going home this holiday, says that their father was harsh towards their transgender partner when they both visited him.My dad took that opportunity to interrogate her about her identity and ask what kind of hormones she was on and what kind of surgeries she had gotten, they told Uncloseted Media. He does not use my correct name unless I specifically insist, which I have to do every sentence. I have not heard him gender me correctly once.According to Ryan, the tactics used by Robins father contribute to mental health deterioration. Rejection behaviors all focus on trying to change, prevent, deny or minimize someone's LGBTQ identity, Ryan says. That includes behaviors like blaming your child when others mistreat them because of their LGBTQ identity, not talking about their identity, pressuring them to be more or less masculine or feminine, not using their appropriate name, misgendering them, and so on.Research has found that when trans youth could have their chosen name used, there was a more than 70% decrease in severe depressive symptoms and a 65% decrease in suicide attempts. This is startling when you think that this is just about using someone's name, says Ryan.I want to be speaking up against these things, and I often do. And my impression is that that disturbs the peace of the holidays, Robin says. There is this unspoken agreement that we will tolerate it, but I am no longer afraid of ruining a relationship by bringing these things up because I see that relationship as being over already.Since Nguyen came out four years ago, she says going home for the holidays is difficult. Im gay, Im the only one who moved away from home, and so Im definitely the topic of gossip when I visit, she says. Its often like, Whoa. I feel pretty scrutinized. What Robin and Nguyen are describing is the conflict that many LGBTQ children feel towards their parents: the pull to be themselves authentically, clashing with a desire to keep relationships with their parents intact, with silence as the glue.Uncloseted Media is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support our work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. When we're in environments where we don't feel like ourselves, it creates a sense of avoidance, says Rebecca Schlegal, professor of psychology at Texas University, whose research focuses on authenticity and well-being. But when you're talking about family, what a conflict, right? Our impulse is going to be to approach family. But when you're getting signals that you don't fit, you're going to feel like you need to avoid. And so that's going to arouse a sense of conflict within the self.According to Schlegels research, when people are allowed to be themselves and feel accepted, their well-being skyrockets. Authenticity is associated with every mental health outcome that we've ever looked at. It's bigger than a typical effect that we see in social psychology, she says.Photo courtesy of U.P. NguyenFor Nguyen, the rejection manifests in acute mental health struggles. It feels like deep sadness, she says. Like, Man, Why is this happening to me? Why cant good things happen to me? And I feel lethargic and its hard for me to move, like literally move and get off the couch or out of bed.She says the worst experience was in 2022, shortly after she and her girlfriend broke up and she chose to go home to her family for Christmas. My ex had hosted me for the holidays for the [three] years we were dating and I didnt have to go back home. I was like, Wow, this is really nice. Like, this is what it's like to have a family that is supportive. So the double gut punch of losing my [girlfriend] and then needing to deal with all the homophobia and toughness of home was terrible for my mental health. In an advisory released last year by U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, isolation and loneliness are as bad for your health as smoking every day. It can also increase your risk of mental health conditions, stroke, heart disease and even premature death.Theres often a perception that people are always the answer to not feeling alone. [But] sometimes they're the cause, Sam Carr, loneliness researcher at the University of Bath, told Uncloseted Media. If you have to be somebody else with your family, that means the real you is hidden. So even when you do go back home, you feel lonely because your family requires you to be something different. If you live your whole life that way, you've essentially lived a very lonely existence. The world hasn't seen you.Somewhere in between my high school self and now I've tasted freedom and what its like to be fully myself, fully out, fully existing, Nguyen says. When I'm at home, I feel like I have to put on a mask or I have to censor myself because my parents and I have very differing opinions, and I dont want to spend the whole time I visit fighting, so I just don't say a lot of things. Even though Im out, it feels very closeted.Research has found that more than a quarter of Americans are estranged from family members and that differences over political views are among the leading causes of those estrangements. Many queer people are profoundly distressed and even feel betrayed by their family members this election, says Linda Hsieh, a life coach and therapist who works with LGBTQ clients. Individuals may be thinking, How could you not vote to support me? I'm part of the family.Mary, a 26-year-old trans woman originally from Hawaii who wished to remain anonymous to not further fracture her relationship with her parents, spent this Thanksgiving at home in Oregon with her conservative evangelical family.I don't want to go back any time soon, she says. My father is a Trump supporter, and we've had lots of fights about it.Mary knew she was trans from the age of 12 but kept it to herself for over a decade before coming out to her family in 2022. Since then, her family avoids addressing her name and tries to act as though nothing happened and nothing changed. Her aunt has refused to let her see her niece and nephew, citing concerns about confusing the children because of her identity. I dont think its right to treat my identity as another potential source of conflict. I miss them deeply.Subscribe nowDuring Thanksgiving dinner, it was tense. My grandparents wouldn't look at me, and they would talk around my name so they didnt have to say it, she says. When politics came up, she felt outnumbered. I felt like I couldn't speak. Mary says it has impacted her mental health. Whenever I visit Oregon, I feel an old depression set back in and it makes me antsy to return home to Los Angeles where I don't often feel that same caged animal sadness.Nguyen, who is the first-born daughter of her Vietnamese refugee family, says that she understands where her parents are coming from, but she disagrees. They think that I'm going into battle because they are very religious, and it was tough to be queer in their world growing up. But I think they don't quite understand that it's different now.Research published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine insists that there must be a change. The study reveals a powerful intervention to suicide prevention among LGBTQ people: love. According to the longitudinal study on suicide ideation, social support from family and friends is the most protective factor for at-risk youth. We found that when there were high levels of these supportive behaviors, there were extremely low levels of suicidality, depression, substance abuse, very high levels of self-esteem, high levels of overall health and well-being, positive social connections, and having people who care about you and support you overall, Ryan says. She emphasizes that solutions to family rejection dont require parents to abandon their religious beliefs or political values but instead focus on practical behavioral changes. They just need to modify their behaviors in ways that show love.Ryan's approach involves guiding families through small, actionable steps, such as using their childs chosen name and pronouns. She also encourages families to take part in educational programs that explain the impact of rejecting behaviors. Its about meeting the family where they are at, says Ryan. Most of these families want their kids to be happy and healthy. When they see the data about how much pain the rejection is causing them, they change. They want to keep their families together.Photo courtesy of U.P. NyguenThis holiday, Nyguyen is feeling conflicted about not going home. Sometimes I get lonely, she says. Ive been quite lucky to have had an incredible support network around me. When I came out and was rejected by my parents, I was immediately embraced by other loved ones. I had a stable tech job and a roof over my head, far from family, so the damage was mostly limited to feeling cast out by the ones who were supposed to love me the most.Nguyen has been in therapy for years and says that it has done wonders for how she processes her familial relationships. Theyre not the easiest, but theyre mine, and I get to choose whether or not I want them. I will always love my family and want to honor what they gave me, and I'm still deciding how to do that in a way that doesn't make me go crazy. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts or mental health, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Hotline. She then shared her favorite: I believe in things and many others dont, like having a sixth sense, clairvoyance and telepathy, and as an adolescent, I had bizarre fantasies or preoccupations.'Maddow could not believe that all of it was one question, and she wondered if the and meant that all of those things had to apply for someone to mark it as applying to them. She then emphasized again just how strange the questions were. If your would-be boss asks you how interested you are in sex, and this would-be boss wants you to put this answer in writing and submit it to the company, call HR, right? Maybe call the cops. Definitely dont take that job. But that is being administered to people who want to work for the U.S. government in the second term of Donald J. Trump.Kennedy has no background in medical science and is known for his wacky, anti-scientific approach to health, which includes opposition to vaccines and sunscreen, health interventions that have saved millions of lives. Kennedy himself has a history of poor health, which included a parasitic brain worm that resulted in mental fogginess and memory loss.Hes also gotten attention for saying that COVID was engineered by China to target Caucasians and Black people and spare Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people and for claiming the U.S. is sending money to Ukraine to fund other racial bioweapons.Kennedy has been a prominent voice in the anti-vaccine movement, which is based on pseudoscience and uses misinformation to spread the belief that vaccines dont prevent disease. Kennedy and Childrens Health Defense spread misinformationin 2018 in Samoa that led to a decline in the vaccination rate, which was followed by an outbreak of measles in which 57,000 people were infected and 83 people including children died.Kennedy opposes the fluorination of water, which is considered one of the great public health achievements of the 20th century. Fluoridation improves dental health and particularly benefits children who cant regularly access dental care, but it has also long been the subject of conspiracy theories.Kennedy is also an HIV denialist, including over 100 pages of quotes from people who deny the connection between HIV and AIDS in his bookThe Real Anthony Fauci. Kennedy has disparagingly referred to the orthodoxy that HIV alone causes AIDS and the theology that HIV is the sole cause of AIDS. He has called medications used to treat HIV absolutely fatal. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The advice is the same as its been for the last couple of decades, which is to do a second-parent adoption, Alexander explained. Do not depend on the federal government or the gay right to marry to give you parental rights. A 2023 report from a coalition of LGBTQ+ advocacy groups explains that second-parent adoption can be used to establish a legal relationship between a parent and a child OR to obtain an adoption decree for someone who is already a legal parent through another pathway to parentage, such as the marital presumption.Shelbi Day, Chief Policy Officer for Family Equality, toldLGBTQ Nationwhen the report was released that even married LGBTQ+ couples cannot rely on the marital presumption and should take further steps to protect themselves. She said that the presumption can be challenged in some states and that Family Equality strongly suggests that parents take additional steps to establish legal parentage to ensure that children have legal stability and access to all of the rights and benefits of legal parentage no matter where people travel and no matter what happens between the parents in the future. This is also true even if both parents are on a childs birth certificate, which she said does not establish a legal parent-child relationship.Alexander dispensed similar advice to Advocate. She also said parentage orders are not as effective as second-parent adoptions, at least in Texas where she practices, because these orders have not been challenged extensively in the courts. Adoptions, on the other hand, have been repeatedly upheld. LGBTQ+ family law expert Nancy Polikoff agreed, saying adoptions are better understood and more universally recognized. When we are looking at the possibility of cutting back on LGBT family recognition, states that are not inclined to recognize the legitimacy of parenting by LGBT people are going to be emboldened to deny that status whenever they can, she said.Nobody is expecting Obergefell to be overturned anytime soon, she continued. Unfortunately, I think parentage is one of those places where if a court is just not going to be as protective in a particular state, I think they are going to have more leeway to discriminate under a Trump administration. Related Why I adopted my own son after giving birth to him LGBTQ+ parents must take extra steps to protect their families. We wanted to do whatever it took. In addition to many parents simply not knowing this is the best path to protecting there families, another barrier looms large: Second-parent adoptions can carry a hefty price tag.It makes me sick to think there are people who need this done and cannot get it done, Haley Swenson told Advocate. Swenson and her wife, Alieza Durana, rushed to complete a second-parent adoption of their son after Trump won the election. Unable to afford the $3,500 they needed to begin the process, they reached out to friends and family for help. Its unclear what they want to do, and that lack of specificity is whats really scary if youre a queer parent because you dont really know how to protect yourself, Swenson said of the incoming administration. So since we know there was this one thing we could do to protect ourselves, and we hadnt done it yet, it was like, OK, there are so many unknowns lets at least take care of what we can.The best path toward obtaining legal parentage rights may vary by state. Wicked star Jonathan Bailey says a teacher called him a homophobic slur when he was young
Wicked star Jonathan Bailey did not come out as gay until his mid-20s, but he had inklings about his sexuality throughout his childhood. Bailey, who plays straight heartthrob Fiyero in the film, recently told British Vogue that he really wanted to explore these feelings when he was a kid. He recalled declaring at a sleepover with his friends, Guys, guys, who else thinks theyre gay? Do you? I do. I do. Related Conservative Christians demand boycott of Wicked for pushing an LGBTQ agenda There arent any openly LGBTQ+ characters in the film, but the fact that many of the actors are gay. I might coparent with a woman, he said, but Im thinking it will be with a man.Bailey is far from the only LGBTQ+ member of the Wicked cast. There is also Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba), Bowen Yang (Pfannee), Bronwyn James (Shenshen), and Marissa Bode (Nessarose). The film, itself, has also been celebrated for its queerness. Ariana Grande, who stars as Glinda, called it beautifully queer, saying that Oz is a celebration of uniqueness. Erivo, who stars as the green-skinned Elphaba, agreed that the film is a celebration of people who feel othered. I do think that both Glinda and Elphaba are just different. Both of them are almost, like, other, you know? she said. Both actresses were fully onboard with fans who ship their characters. Its a relationship, Erivo insisted. It is true love, which is probably why people are shipping it, you know, because what they build with each other is an unbreakable bond and love. And trust and truth and just such a safe space for one another, Grande added. Which is what all relationships should be.The Thank You, Next singer then took it a step further. Gay cop developed PTSD as he worried about colleagues poisoning him after years of harassment
A gay police officer is suing the city of Oceanside, California, alleging he faced both anti-LGBTQ+ harassment and retaliation after he reported it.NBC 7 San Diego reports that Sgt. Tyler Peppard filed a lawsuit against the city on November 22. According to court documents, Peppard joined the Oceanside Police Department (OPD) as a recruit in August 2016. Following his first six months on the job, Peppard was outted as gay by his partner at the time, making his sexual orientation known in a retaliatory manner, according to the suit. Related Lesbian firefighter may get $1.3 million for enduring 21 years of shocking harassment Her colleagues swore at her, injured her, and then urinated on her belongings. Peppard claims that a year after he joined the OPD, Field Training Officer Matt Bryd told him during a performance evaluation that his lifestyle choices do not add up to the values of our police department. Bryd allegedly added that Peppards father, a former police officer, is probably disappointed and embarrassed. He probably would prefer you turn in your badge and gun. However, his father used his connections with Sgt. Keli Garcia to help Peppard retain his job and to be moved out of the purview of the units where he had been struggling, according to the lawsuit.Peppard was subsequently able to thrive at work, receiving above standard and outstanding marks until late 2023, when his supervisors changed. After that point, the harassment began again and was constant, with Peppard claiming his colleagues left rotting food in his equipment bag and even tampered with his SWAT equipment by removing ammunition. The harassment got so bad, the suit alleges, that Peppard became anxious to eat food that may have been out of his sight for even just an instant, for fear that his colleagues would try to alter his food.In May, Peppard was placed on probation but denies the departments allegations of communications issues, including not responding to text messages. The suit alleges that the department retaliated against Peppard after he reported his mistreatment. He claims he was denied a promotion, subjected to continued harassment, and placed on probation simply because he is gay. Peppard says he met with a psychologist who diagnosed him with PTSD in October. The following month, he took medical leave to attend an outpatient program recommended by his doctor. He claims he continues to struggle with emotional distress as a result of his employment, including without limitation, stress, anxiety, fear, anger, feelings of isolation and oppression, depression, problems with relationships, and the development of an eating disorder.Once Sergeant Peppard came out, or was outed as homosexual, he was treated differently, Peppards attorney, Dante Pride, told CBS 8. The way that the officers speak to him, the way that they look at him, the respect that he feels, all of that has changed.Pride said he is aware of several other issues that will be made public during discovery. I dont know how I would feel if the person who I have to report to, the person in charge of my paycheck, in charge of my hours, basically in charge of my life, tells me that they believe my parents should be ashamed because of my sexuality. I mean, its heavy, very heavy, Pride said.Oceanside City Attorney John Mullen responded to the suit, telling NBC 7 that The city takes these allegations seriously and has retained a law firm to conduct an independent investigation to review Sgt. Peppards allegations. Mullen added that the investigation is ongoing and that the city would not comment further until all witnesses have been interviewed, all relevant evidence examined and the independent investigation is concluded.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

This Florida county just adopted a new sex-ed curriculum minus the sex
This story wasoriginally publishedon Judd Legums Substack,Popular Information, to which you can subscribehere. it then appeared on Mother Jones and has been republished with the publications permission.A new middle schoolsex education curriculum in Orange County, Florida, obtained by Popular Information, eliminates previous lessons on the reproductive system, contraception, and consent. What remains is a discussion of the benefits of abstinence and a cursory review of various sexually transmitted diseases.Orange Countys new curriculum, provided to Popular Information by the Florida Freedom to Read Project, was recently approved by the Florida Department of Education (DoE). That approval was required as part of a law,HB 1069, signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis in May 2023. The law requires schools to teach abstinence from sexual activity outside of marriage as the expected standard for all school-age students. The new Orange County 8th grade sex education curriculum, for example, emphasizes that abstinence is the only 100 percent effective method to prevent sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy. The same information was included in Orange Countys previous 8th grade sex education curriculum, taught in prior years, and submitted to the Florida DoE for the 2023-24 school year, but never approved. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today A very large amount of material has been removed from the sex education curriculum. The 8th grade sex education curriculum submitted last year but not approved is 230 pages. The new, approved version is 36 pages. (You can review both documents in full at the end ofthis story.)The old curriculum included basic information about human anatomy that has now been eliminated.Eliminating this information was not required by the new law. Rather, the law requires the DoE to approve sex education materials as appropriate for the grade and age of the student. According to theOrlando Sentinel, department officials told educators in Broward County, Florida, that [p]ictures of external sexual/reproductive anatomy should not be included in any grade level. Officials in Orange County appear to have received similar instructions.A DoE spokesperson defended the new restrictions, telling theAP, A state government should not be emphasizing or encouraging sexual activity among children or minors and is therefore right to emphasize abstinence. The old 8th grade sex education curriculum in Orange County, while promoting abstinence, acknowledged that some students are sexually active. It provided information on how to prevent unintended pregnancy and protect against STDs if students engaged in sexual activity. This information has been deleted from the new curriculum. The old Orange County 8th grade curriculum also included information about the various kinds of birth control, their efficacy, and whether or not they helped reduce the risk of STDs. This information has also been removed.According to theSentinel, state officials told Broward County officials that [c]ontraceptives are not part of any health or science standard. Instead, contraceptives could only be mentioned as a health resource. Here is what remains on contraception in the new Orange County 8th grade curriculum:Prevention of PregnancyIntentional prevention of pregnancy through the use of various behaviors and products, such as:Sexual abstinenceCondoms, pills, devices, patches, etc. Abstinence and Preventing Risky BehaviorsKnowing the facts helps prepare someone to make informed, healthy choices.Pregnancy prevention methods can safeguard people from the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV disease. There are no descriptions of the different forms of birth control and no explanation of which forms of birth control are effective in preventing the transmission of STDs. This is a particularly important issue in Florida, which is currently reporting more HIV diagnoses than almost any other state. Previously, Orange Countys 8th grade sex education curriculum included a detailed lesson about the importance of consent before engaging in sexual activity.Elissa Barr, a professor of public health at the University of North Florida, says that schools across Florida have also been ordered toremove contentmentioning consent from sex education curricula. All discussion of consent has been removed from the new Orange County 8th grade sex education curriculum.During the 2023-24 school year, several of Floridas largest school districtsincluding Orange, Hillsborough, and Polk Countiesdecidednot to teach sex educationbecause the DoE never approved their proposed curricula. The department hired unnamed experts to review each proposed sex education curriculum. These experts were then required to evaluate all materials on 11 separate criteria, some of which were inscrutable. (Experts were paid $330 for each completed review.)That process has finally been completed, at least in Orange County, for the 2024-25 school year. The result is a sex education curriculum that includes almost no information about sex.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Donald Trump just created a special new job for gay diplomat Richard Grenell
President-elect Donald Trump has named Richard Grenell as an envoy for special missions primarily involving foreign policy challenges, a newly created position that will not require Senate confirmation, the Associated Press reports. Grenell, who is gay, served as the ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence during Trumps first term.Ric will work in some of the hottest spots around the World, including Venezuela and North Korea,Trump wrote in a Saturday social media post announcing Grenells appointment. Trump has traded insults with Venezuelas president after implementing economic sanctions against the country, and while Trump had a bromance with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, their relationship could change amid rising tensions in Asia. Related Gay Trump official Richard Grenell linked to group behind antisemitic ad campaign The ads seem pro-Jewish and pro-Israel until you find out where theyre airing. Grenell reportedly wanted the position of secretary of state in Trumps Cabinet, and right-wing influencers may have even been bribed to endorse him for the spot (something Grenell denies). However, sources toldPoliticothat Grenells business dealings in foreign countries and reputation as a prickly and less than diplomatic demeanor may have sunk his chances of getting the secretary of state job. Instead, Trump nominated Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) for the position. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Now, Grenell will serve as a diplomatic ambassador to at least two nations that Trump and the United States has historically had strained relationships with. During Trumps first presidency, he issued harsh financial sanctionsagainst Venezuelan oil, reportedly in an attempt to oust Venezuelan President Nicols Maduro. Maduro is an oppressive leader who the U.S government accused of stealing his countrys recent elections. Trumps sanctions are believed to have mostly hurt Venezuelan residents (not Maduro) and increased emigration from the country.Trump has previously referred to Maduro asa Cuban puppet and a tyrant, and Maduro has previously called Trump a miserable racist cowboys, a mentally ill crook who handles foreign affairs like a New York mafia extortionist. However, Maduro called Trumps re-election a new start, and Trump may need to strike a deal with him if he would like Venezuelas help with potentially lowering gasoline prices and accepting Venezuelans mass deported from the U.S. back to their native country. During Trumps first term, he ended a longstanding U.S. foreign policy of isolation North Korea in hopes of ending its nuclear program. Trump famously held a historic summit with North Koreas leader Kim Jung Un in June 2018. During their meeting,Trump didnt say anything about the countrys human rights abuses, including the fact that U.S. student Otto Warmbier died a few days after he was released him from 17 months in a North Korean prison in 2017. Since the summit occurred, North Korea has only continued launching missiles near its Asian neighbors and currently has an estimated 50 nuclear weapons (having had 10 to 20 in 2018), according to the Arms Control Association. North Korea now also has increased strategic, financial, and ideological support from Russia and China that collectively challenge U.S. influence in Asia, making U.S.-allied South Korea and Japan a bit nervous. Its unclear what position Trump will take towards both countries, and its also unclear how Grenells role will work with Rubios. But regardless, Trumps actions will have long-reaching implications for the future of U.S. diplomacy abroad amid declining American influence Richard Grenell is a converted Trump loyalistGrenell deleted social media posts criticizing Trump as reckless and dangerous after Trump became the Republican presidential nominee in 2016. Grenell has since become one of Trumps biggest supporters.Although Grenell claimed in August 2020 that President Trump is the most pro-gay president in American history, nothing backs up that claim. During his time in the Trump administration, Grenell said he worked with Trump ona campaign to end the criminalization of homosexualityaround the world, but the campaign seemingly accomplished nothing. Around the same time, Trump officials said it wouldviolate religious freedomto pressure countries to repeal their anti-LGBTQ+ laws.Since Trumps re-election loss in 2020, Grenell has repeated Trumps lie that the election was stolen due to an unprecedented nationwide conspiracy of voter fraud that only occurred in the states that Trump lost. He has also opposed the Equality Act legislation that would provide federal LGBTQ+ anti-discrimination protections claiming it would be an attack on religion.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Altmans announcement comes on the heels of Amazon and Meta also announcing $1 million donations to the inaugural fund. Altman, however, will reportedly be donating the money from his personal funds, whereas Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg will be making the donations through their respective companies. Many believe the donations are a sort of olive branch to the incoming administration an attempt by tech companies to smooth over their once-hostile relationships with Trump (out Apple CEO Tim Cook also recently had dinner with the incoming president). OpenAI is the tech driving the popular ChatGPT chatbot and DALL-E image generator. Some have worried about its potential to create widespread cyber-scams and disinformation floods, causing AI to be riskier perhaps to human survival than the advent of nuclear weapons. To stop potential abuses, Altman expressed support to Congress for the creation of a government agency that could help set safety standards and audits to prevent AI from breaking copyright laws, instructing people how to break laws, illegally collecting user data, and pushing false advertising. Wickeds Defying Gravity is a musical theatre anthem and a battle cry foroutsiders
As director Jon M Chus first instalment of the mega-musical adaptation Wicked arrives in cinemas, a new audience of fans is connecting with Stephen Schwartzs memorable score. Featuring hits including Popular The Wizard and I and For Good, the musical is particularly loved for its celebration of female characters in song.Unlike many Broadway shows, Wickeds heroes Elphaba (played in the film by Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (by Ariana Grande), both women, dominate the song list. They frequently sing together, whereas other musicals typically feature duets that focus on a romance between a male and female lead.At the heart of Wicked is the anthem Defying Gravity which closes act one of the stage production and serves as the finale to Chus film. It begins as an argument between Elphaba and Glinda as they debate how to solve a mutual predicament. Elphaba explains her feelings to Glinda and asks her to leave Emerald City with her. They dream about becoming a united front but, in the end, the song climaxes with Elphaba breaking free and accepting the consequences of embracing her magic.Looking for something good? Cut through the noise with a carefully curated selection of the latest releases, live events and exhibitions, straight to your inbox every fortnight, on Fridays. Sign up here. The journey of the song, which begins as a conversation and ends with a battle cry, epitomises a classic musical theatre finale, as it gains momentum and rises in key.Using similar values to Schwartzs lyrics to Go the Distance from Hercules (1997) and his song When You Believe from The Prince of Egypt (1998), Defying Gravity is particularly special because Elphaba goes on a journey with her best friend Glinda as her audience. Many musicals feature a rousing act one finale led by a female protagonist. For example, Mama Rose regathers her strength to make her daughter Louise a star during Everythings Coming Up Roses in Gypsy, which has just returned to Broadway. However, Defying Gravity transcends its context in Wicked by focusing on the theme of trusting yourself and believing in who you are without compromise.Wicked is an exploration of stigma (aimed at Elphaba in the show) and where it leads, and Defying Gravity is a watershed moment. Erivo described it as an important moment in which Elphaba resolves to not allow the things that have hurt her, that have stripped her of her humanity to keep her down.Friends of DorothyAs well as offering empowering representations of its female characters and of female friendship, Wicked is one of many queer-coded musicals. These are shows where LGBTQ+ identities or themes are unnamed but can be easily identified. Theatre professor Stacy Wolf has suggested that Wicked does more than portray women as powerful and as friends; it presents the story of a queer romance between Elphaba and Glinda. This places Defying Gravity alongside the queer anthem Somewhere Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz, another musical adaptation based on L. Frank Baums 1900 childrens novel. In fact, in Defying Gravity Schwartz quotes The Wizard of Oz composer Harold Arlens melody in a motif set to the word unlimited, which can be heard several times throughout Wicked. Defying Gravity also uses a similar structure of escalation to another queer anthem, I Am What I Am from the musical La Cage Aux Folles. It also inspired Let It Go from Disneys Frozen (also sung by Idina Menzel, the first Broadway Elphaba), which has its own queer history. If Somewhere Over the Rainbow imagines whimsical escapism from an unfriendly world and I Am What I Am is fierce about being rejected by the people you love, Defying Gravity is about the power of choosing and forging your own path, with or without help. The stirring accompaniment and building vocal line connect Defying Gravity to a tradition of classic musical theatre showstoppers. Meanwhile, the musical style and message of self actualisation recognises more modern values. As Wicked arrives in cinemas, the message of Defying Gravity feels especially timely. Its core sentiment that everyone deserves the chance to fly speaks to so many people the centre piece of a powerful musical about embracing our differences.Hannah Thuraisingam Robbins, Associate Professor in Popular Music/Director of Black Studies, University of NottinghamThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Lucid, with AI, aims to push the boundaries on streaming
Not many 28-year-olds can say they were a professional athlete, top of their class at an elite university, an investment bank analyst, and a global business development lead and now have their own company. But Indy Sanders, founder and CEO of the tech startup Lucid, can.I dont think there are any barriers within someones being or within the world that can prevent anyone from reaching the top of anything they want to achieve. I think the only prevention or blockage is your ability to push through, Sanders, who identifies as queer and nonbinary, said during a Google Meet interview with the Bay Area Reporter.Lucid is an artificial intelligence-driven wellness and media platform featuring works by an array of creatives, artists, and filmmakers. The company seeks to turn the current entertainment-streaming model of Netflix, Prime, Hulu, and similar subscriptions on its head with its offering of tailored, advertisement-free content based on users personality, mood, and other relevant data.Headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, Lucids MVP (minimal viable product) beta launch took off in July 2023. Ever since, Sanders has been steadfastly promoting their companys concept, iOS app, and intelligence-streaming model. For Sanders, its all about perseverance and an unwavering drive to succeed. If you find a way, then theres always a next move. Thats the mentality that I brought into the company, they said.Setting the stage for entrepreneurshipWhile most 13-year-olds were enrolled in school and living at home with parents or caregivers, Sanders, who hails from the United Kingdom, was playing tennis at the professional level and traveling internationally on their own for matches and tournaments. Their days consisted of training for eight to nine hours and then heading to wherever they were staying, making themself something for dinner, and getting in some study time before falling asleep and doing the same routine all over again. In terms of what Sanders gleaned from the experience, they said, I basically was taken out of the systems that other people were in, which gave me a very different perspective on life, and I was very much trained as an athlete into this obsessive, hard-working behavior where you feel so deeply that whatever you put in you get out, and you know that mistakes are just part of the positive learning experience. For them, those formative years yielded two key benefits. It was a combination of not being tied to the main structures of our world that constrain people particularly constrain their own belief in what they can achieve and do for the world and my ability to not feel deterred by problems and [instead] be like, OK, lets go. What can we do next? Sanders said.A spinal injury ended their tennis career, but it didnt lessen their ambition or self-discipline. Sanders pivoted from being a professional athlete to a conscientious student, enrolling in Loughborough University, a major sports university in England.I went there because I didnt know how to engage with normal people that didnt do sports, to be quite honest. So it was a nice transition, Sanders said. After graduating top of their class and with a first degree (the U.S. equivalent to graduating summa cum laude) in politics, they gave law school a try, only to find it wasnt the right fit.Law was too much about reading and less about practical innovation using my mind, Sanders commented. For Sanders, realizing that the career wasnt for them didnt result in giving up; instead, it prompted them to try something new: the financial-centered world of banking. Their work in the industry included joining Houlihan Lokeys mergers and acquisitions team as an investment banking analyst, going from legal books and trial practice to sourcing and making deals. They shared, I was looking at cool businesses across Europe and finding acquisition targets for our clients, and then starting off those M&A deals. So that was really good insight into looking at the later stage of a startup and going, What is an acquirable startup? What does it look like? What are the patterns of growth? The analyst job was followed by work at a small tech consulting company, State of Flux, with Fortune 100 clients but, at the time, an indiscernible sales process.I went in as their first-ever dedicated sales person, and I basically ripped their system to sh*t and built a proper global growth structure, selling into Microsoft, Google, Chevron [with] deals up to the millions, said Sanders.Their efforts resulted in the companys interest in moving Sanders from the U.K. to New York, as head of strategic growth, to run operations globally; after a few years of driving sales and business development, they were ready to branch out on their own, with the idea of Lucid in mind.Pushing the boundaries of streamingOnce downloading the free Lucid app via the Apple Store and opening it, a soon-to-be-user sees the wording Enter Lucid and registers via an email address and password. From there, the approximately 5-minute onboarding involves a personality assessment, featuring nine prompts, including If you were an emoji and selecting one of a dozen featured emoji (e.g., peach, fire, crying yellow face); You move into a new apartment Whats the first thing you buy? with paint, lights, speakers, sofa, or plants as one of the possible responses; and You have more than 30 with the five options being books, tattoos, shoes, succulents, and bottles of alcohol. We really started honing in on exactly what people wanted, and then we uncovered, Oh, its not just a content play here. Its how do you connect people to content in a more meaningful way, and how do you integrate it into their lives in a habitual way that they dont have to make an effort towards, which is where all of our AI came in, explained Sanders about the apps development.Post-personality assessment, Lucids AI ghost depicted as the traditional white bed sheet figure appears on the screen, putting together curated content based on the users selected answers to the prompts. The user can also have a conversation with the ghost, with the interactions serving as a means to further personalize their experience. You can say, Hey, Im feeling pretty low. Im a Pisces. My partner just broke up with me. Help me elevate myself this evening, and lift my mood up and show me that theres a reason to have faith in the universe today. And it will give you conversational reasoning as to what its curating for you and why, and then it presents it to you, Sanders said.Feelings such as love, calmness, and joy drive the film collections, with titles like Kinetic Motion and Quiet Contemplation, that Lucids AI ghost selects and recommends. We curate, not by genre, but by emotive. Like, Does this content deliver some kind of emotive impact? And if it does, then we like it. We typically are doing the stuff other people arent doing, and we like that. We dont want to be copycats of Netflix were very different from them, Sanders explained. The curated content art-oriented films of varying lengths comes from numerous creatives, sourced by Sanders and their team, including Asia Stewart, Lucids founding artistic director and Sanders spouse. As Indys life and business partner, I see how committed they are to Lucid firsthand, Stewart, a Black queer woman, wrote in an email to the B.A.R. It is not an exaggeration to say that from the second Indy wakes up to the moment their head hits their pillow twenty hours later, they are thinking about Lucid. On many occasions, theyve woken up during the middle of the night to do research or jot down notes for a new idea or feature. They are constantly assessing how they can refine Lucids apps to be reflective of the needs of filmmakers, artists, and audiences.Films on the Lucid app include The Man of My Dreams, written and directed by Tristan Scott-Behrends, a queer filmmaker who divides his time between New York City and Los Angeles.Scott-Behrends nearly 6-minute film centers on a romance, with two lovers eating pizza slices together at a restaurant, spending time in a laundromat, and holding and kissing each other on a subway train. How quickly strangers stares turned into smiles as they recognized the radiating love between us, the films narrator says.Scott-Behrends, whose works Only Trumpets, Suckmeoff, Princess! and Lilac Lips, Dutchess County are also part of Lucids film collection, described the platform as filling a much-needed gap for those in the film and performance industries.Curation is such an important part of any artists discovery, and Lucid is proving to be a trusted visionary connecting their audiences to compelling and provocative work that they may not otherwise be able to access. So many of the other platforms that artists working within performance or experimental film (use) have such strict censorship that work particularly work from queer artists often gets banned or pushed out of the algorithm, he wrote in an email to the B.A.R.Scott-Behrends appreciates not only Lucids hand- (or AI ghost-) picked content based on an individuals interests and preferences but also the companys willingness to pay filmmakers and other creatives for their contributions.I am really honored to be a part of this new venture, and with their financial model I anticipate that the money Lucid pays out to artists will allow us to continue to finance our work, he commented.Getting the word and content outAt the time of Sanders interview with the B.A.R., they were in Miami for Miami Art Week 2024; they had attended last year as well. The event draws myriad exhibitors and attendees and features various fairs and shows. For Sanders and their team, its an opportunity to get a firsthand look at peoples responses to Lucids content.Last year, we were in a really cool alternative show and fair where we were in this warehouse. We had projections all over the ceiling, big chairs, and I was in there 12 hours a day with my team, and it was really interesting to see people walking in and absorbing our space and our content specifically. It was like the best customer discovery experience you could possibly have, they said.Miami Art Week is also a means for Sanders and the Lucid team whose core members are Stewart; Millie Gibbons, founding AI engineer; and Max Roman, lead adviser and investor to establish cultural partnerships with those in the art world, such as with the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA), a nonprofit arts organization and one of the biggest shows at the event.Sanders commented, We dont necessarily position ourselves as an art company; were culture[-themed], obviously, but whats really exciting, I think, is being able to literally rub our shoulders in this event next to some of the top galleries in the world. And then theres the palpable interest in Lucid from hotel groups, social clubs, and venues looking to amp up their spaces visual displays.People watch Lucid content at Lucids NADA Miami showcase 2024; featured still from smet Krolus Gate29 (2021). Photo: Dylan MekhiAs Sanders shared, They were saying, We love your content. It actually has some kind of depth and meaning and has a draw to it. The other content that weve showcased, printed artwork, or anything thats an alternative to elevate a space just hasnt hit in the same way. Are you guys going to do a corporate deal?Sanders built out the tech to deliver in that regard, adding consumer market to Lucids growing list of customers, including art museums, film festivals, and other cultural organizations, as well as a future partnership with The Donum Estate, a Sonoma, California-based vineyard. The positive reception to Lucid extends to recognitions such as a South by Southwest (SXSW) 2024 conference award that Sanders nabbed for best speed pitch in media and entertainment. Sanders and Stewart were also selected for Forbes 30 under 30 North America 2025 Art & Style list, which recognizes the business achievements of individuals under age 30. The right mentality goes a long wayThough millions of people are using Lucids app, cultural partnerships abound, and accolades are mounting up, building a business from scratch hasnt been without its challenges, noted Sanders. Its definitely harder being queer as a founder fundamentally, ridiculously harder. I thought I could beat the odds, and in some ways I do. But I like to say, if I was a cis straight white man and I had my background, I would be getting $20 million checks dropped in my lap by VCs all the time. And that, sadly, is not the case. I dont have $20 million to play with right now, but I will, said Sanders.Lucid does, however, have certain major venture capital investors including Antler, based in Singapore, and New York City-headquartered Techstars. According to Sanders, they raised $400,000 from these VCs, as well as from angel investors, including Roman, an ex-product lead at Netflix. Theyre currently involved in a fundraising round to fuel scaled growth that will carry over into 2025.Lucids investors are not only financially backing the company but also articulating support for Sanders ideas and work ethic.Indy is one of the most focused entrepreneurs Ive ever encountered in my career. That, combined with their ability to learn incredibly fast, makes them just outrageously effective and able to execute quickly, said Roman, a self-described frequent and enthusiastic ally, in an email to the B.A.R.Roman, who lives in the Bay Area, is a guest lecturer at Stanford Universitys Graduate School of Business and was elected to the Piedmont Unified School District Board of Education in November, per Alameda County election results. His sentiments about Sanders skill set and leadership qualities parallel that of Antlers general partner, Jeff Becker:Indy is a force. They are maniacal about the details that matter, an exceptional operator, and someone with top 1% resilience. This is the type of founder you always back, wrote Becker in a comment Sanders shared with the B.A.R.Lucid team members conveyed views of Sanders along the same lines as Lucids investors. As CEO Indy strikes the perfect balance. Theyve built an inclusive, energetic workplace culture where exploration and spontaneity are encouraged, while also modeling really incredible work ethic, drive, adaptability and creativity, Gibbons, who identifies as cis and straight, wrote in an Instagram message to the B.A.R.I think Indys unconventional path into this industry has made them a particularly resilient and driven founder, who also really cares about unlocking the potential of every member of their team, she added.Stewart described Sanders, her partner, as incredibly strategic, assessing it as a way of being derived from Sanders years on the court, racket in hand. They can distill any problem affecting any area of the business into simple facts and quickly outline an efficient and effective solution that aligns with wider business goals. They push the team to be nimble and always embrace continuous innovation, Stewart said.Early in the new year, Sanders plans on scheduling a trip to Mexico with the Lucid team, where they can collectively work in mild weather and also celebrate the success of Lucid thus far.For Sanders, the life lessons learned from sports carry over to their approach to running a company.Your odds of winning a race are not defined by where you start in the race and what your odds are at the starting line. The odds are going to change at every single point along the way because other people are going to drop out. So the one thing you know for certain is, if you continue and you are one of the final people, your odds are going to be better, and you will have a much higher chance of succeeding, they said.I think that that mentality kind of pulls you through every moment, Sanders added. This story is part of the Digital Equity Local Voices Fellowship lab through News is Out.
