WWW.PRIDE.COMSonja Morgan wants to film another Bravo spin-off & dubs herself the 'curator of c*ck'We love our Sonjarita!Sonja Morgan is Bravo royalty from her very memorable time on The Real Housewives of New York City. Besides RHONY, the star has also appeared on The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip and Luann & Sonja: Welcome to Crappie Lake. While attending the grand opening for The Tryst Puerto Vallarta, the reality TV star dished on her very busy schedule that's kept her from starring on Emmy-winning shows such as The Traitors."I haven't been available for Traitors because to give six weeks, that would be a lot of Sonja in Your City! That would be like 17 shows right there. I just did Celebrity Name That Tune with Christian Siriano! All the girls were swooning. That was fun! Of course I brought an intern," Morgan tells PRIDE. See on Instagram It comes as no surprise that Bravoholics everywhere have begged NBCUniversal to cast Morgan back on RHONY or for another season of Luann & Sonja: Welcome to Crappie Lake."Luann and I are just so good together! We always get laid together. I'm the curator of c*ck! We like the D! For me, an ideal evening is drinking with the gays and going home with the d*ck. Luann and I are perfect for six weeks!"If a second season of Luann & Sonja: Welcome to Crappie Lake sadly isn't in the cards, Morgan even says she'd love to collab with her RHONY OG's on other potential spin-off shows."You know who's really great? Ramona and I! She always takes care of me. When she's fixing my makeup, it's like she's wiping snow off a windshield! I love to travel with her... and I could always travel with Dorinda! She always has something with the cellulite!"Fans can follow Sonja Morgan on Instagram here. WWW.PRIDE.COMMeet 'Fear Street: Prom Queen's queer secret weaponWelcome to the Creepy Kiki, PRIDEs weekly dissection of all things that go bump in the (gay) night. This is the first installment in a series celebrating queer horror, so join us each week for more stories that chill, thrill, and unapologetically kill with flair.Director John Hughes was one of the defining voices of the 1980s. He was the architect behind some of the most enduring archetypes of the teen comedy genre. But what if you took some of his most influential work, like 16 Candles, Pretty in Pink, and Some Kind of Wonderful and tossed them in a blender with some red dye and corn syrup? What youd end up with is Fear Street: Prom Queen, the latest entry in Netflixs oh-so-queer horror franchise that debuted with a trilogy of movies and dominated the summer of 2021.This new entry, set in 1988 between the events of the first two of those films, introduces us to a new cast of doomed characters just days away from their senior prom. At its (bloody) heart is Lori Granger, who in typical form for the franchises fictional town of Shadyside, comes from a family that seems cursed with violence. By her side is her horror-loving, pot-smoking, and very queer-coded best friend, Megan Rogers, played by out actress Suzanna Son. Against all odds, Lori finds herself nominated for prom queen. The only thing standing between her and coronation is the wolf pack her schools group of vicious, popular girls oh, and an axe-wielding maniac, picking off the would-be prom royalty. Its a perfectly 80s setup for a slasher movie, and the film takes full advantage of finding delightfully gory ways to slice and dice through its significant body count. But what really makes this a must-see for queer fans is Megan, who is an amalgamation of classic '80s (and '00s) sidekicks Duckie, Watts, and a whisper of Janis Ian; and that Son helps infuse the character with the kind of queer-coding that would also have been period appropriate. This film marks the actress's freshman foray into the horror genre, having first broken out in her Gotham Award-nominated role in Sean Bakers Red Rocket, followed by a scene-stealing performance as Chloe in HBOs The Idol. But her road to becoming a scream queen might just have been predestined. My birthday is the day before Halloween, she jokes to PRIDE. The nurses at the hospital were actually dressed up like witches, and I think that's so funny. It's something that's followed me.It may have awakened something in her as well. Son credits starring in Fear Street for turning her into a fan of the genre but that first came with conquering a fear of her own. I was pretty nervous to do Fear Street, she admits. I had never screamed in public. I had never run on screen before. I was very self-conscious. So, in a way, it was like boot camp and it also made my love for horror so much stronger. The secret to a good scream? Son, whos also a lifelong piano player with her first album debuting soon, says it's the same as singing. You don't know what sound is going to come out, and if you don't commit, and if you're not a little bit relaxed, it's gonna sound like crap, she explains. You really just have to just throw yourself away. She has plenty of opportunities to show off those pipes in Fear Street, as shes stalked through the halls of Shadyside High by a masked killer. Her newly found love of horror is also something shes been sharing with her wife, talent manager Ana Bedayo. She was really scared, says Son. Son, on the other hand, has dived into the deep end of the genre and isn't looking back. I'm good to go. I will watch Sinners on shrooms in IMAX, and my wife is freaking out and I have to console her while I'm on shrooms, which is crazy, she says. So if that gives you any bit of the dynamic, she's such a chicken, but I love her so much because she will watch all of the horror [movies] with me, and I'll just maybe I'll watch it first, and then I'll have to tell her there's a jump scare coming. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Suzanna Son (@suzannason)Her new passion for the genre has lead to her discovering film like Nicolas Pesces The Eyes of My Mother, a psychological horror entry about a young womans emotional detachment growing into violent behavior, which Son says she connected with in a surprisingly profound way, It's so sad, and there's something about it that reminds me of my childhood, which is so fucked up, just like the way... I don't even want to get into it, but, yeah, there's just something nostalgic about it, she shares. It's also a beautiful film. All the trauma aside, it's stunning... that changed my life, actually. It was like, horror can be beautiful. Like many queer folks, Son has found a refuge in the horror genre, and the catharsis it offers in a world where reality can feel quite scary. Feeling those feelings in a safe place, on my couch with my wife, there's something nice about [it], that life isn't so scary anymore, she explains. I can go to that place and be scared when I want to and when I'm in control of it. Not only has the horror genre offered a safe space to process feelings of fear, but its also been a place where queer audiences have seen themselves reflected, either subtextually in films like A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddys Revenge or textually as in Miriam Blaylock in The Hunger or, more recently, in a multigenerational lesbian love story central to the Fear Street trilogy.Like most of the queer viewers who tuned into that three part saga of sapphic love and human sacrifice, Son was a fan. No notes! Honestly, I just love a love story that isn't all about sadness, she says of Prom Queens predecessors. While the new film falls more into the subtextual column, queer fans will likely pick up on the loads of queer coding in the film as unintentional as it may be. Son shares that director Matt Palmer (Calibre) intended the dynamic between Megan and Lori to be platonic love; we'll leave it up to the audience to decide what they see. If they end up viewing the dynamic through rainbow colored glasses, well, theyre in good company. It was how I interpreted the page, really, admits Son. I saw all these words on the page and, yeah, they just felt so real. I don't know how to put it. I just felt the friendship and the kinship, and I have lost some best friends before, and it was reminding me of that feeling. While Fear Street: Prom Queen might be Sons first foray into horror, it wont be her last. Next up, shes starring in the upcoming season of Monsters, which will focus on famed serial killer Ed Gein, whose crimes inspired some of the most iconic queer villains in horror history, including Silence of the Lambs Buffalo Bill and Psychos Norman Bates himself. While Son cant say much about her Monsters role, including the name of her character, it's one she admits she mourned when she had to say goodbye to them.Son seems destined to be a figure in queer horror history, and we cant wait to see what she conjures up while safely peeking out between our fingers, of course. To see PRIDE's interviews with the Fear Street: Prom Queen cast, check out the video at the top of the page.0 Comments 0 Shares 77 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PROPUBLICA.ORGDOJ Abandons Effort to Address Phoenixs Treatment of Homeless Peopleby Nicole Santa Cruz ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up for Dispatches, a newsletter that spotlights wrongdoing around the country, to receive our stories in your inbox every week. When a homeless man questioned the Phoenix polices authority to stop him in February 2020, an officer grabbed him and knelt on his neck while another officer shocked him with a Taser. Another unhoused man said officers threw away his belongings, telling him, You guys are trash and this is trash. Other people experiencing homelessness were regularly cited and arrested by the citys officers during early morning hours for conduct that is plainly not a crime. Those were among the abuses alleged by the Department of Justice last June, following a nearly three-year investigation into the city of Phoenix and its police department. The investigation marked the first time the DOJ had found a pattern of violations against homeless people, including that officers and other city employees illegally threw away their belongings. In addition, DOJ investigators found that officers disproportionately cited and arrested people experiencing homelessness. They comprised 37% of all Phoenix Police Department arrests from 2016 to 2022, though homeless people account for less than 1% of the population. Investigators said many of those stops, citations and arrests were unconstitutional. The wide-ranging probe also found officers used excessive force, discriminated against people of color, retaliated against protesters and violated the rights of people with behavioral health disabilities similar issues to those the DOJ has documented in troubled law enforcement agencies in other cities. But federal officials announced Wednesday that they had abandoned efforts to compel the city and police to address those issues. The DOJ closed its investigations and retracted findings of constitutional violations in Phoenix and five other jurisdictions, including Trenton, New Jersey. Beyond that, the Department of Justice said it was dismissing Biden-era lawsuits against several other police departments, including in Louisville, Kentucky, and Minneapolis, where George Floyd was killed by police five years ago.The DOJ said requiring the cities to enter consent decrees, which are intended to ensure reforms are enacted, would have imposed years of micromanagement of local police departments by federal courts and expensive independent monitors, and potentially hundreds of millions of dollars of compliance costs, without a legally or factually adequate basis for doing so.The city of Phoenix said in a statement that it has tirelessly focused on enhancing policy, training and accountability measures to ensure the best public safety for everyone who lives, works and plays in Phoenix. In recent years, the city has enacted policy changes including employee training and the implementation of body-worn cameras. Legal experts told ProPublica the wrongdoing the DOJ uncovered in Phoenix should be corrected even though city officials will be under less pressure to act.It is a very real shame and a disservice to the residents of these communities to end the work, to stand down and unwind the investigations and to purport to retract the findings, said Justin Levitt, a law professor at Loyola Marymount University and former deputy assistant attorney general in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. The reports retraction, along with last years Supreme Court decision allowing cities to arrest and cite people for sleeping outside even when they have nowhere else to go, could further embolden cities and police departments to marginalize homeless people, said Brook Hill, senior counsel with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a legal advocacy group that focuses on racial justice issues. They will feel like they have a license to do the sweeps and to otherwise make life in public view uncomfortable for unhoused people, he said.Indeed, just last week California Gov. Gavin Newsom urged all local governments in that state to use their authority affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court to address encampments. After the DOJ began the Phoenix investigation in August 2021, Fund for Empowerment, an Arizona advocacy group for homeless people, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona sued the city and police department to stop what attorneys called unconstitutional raids on unsheltered people. Its lawsuit accused the city of failing to provide housing and instead turning to encampment removals to clear sidewalks and other areas. The City has made its message to unhoused individuals clear: engaging in sleep and other essential life activities on the citys public grounds will lead to detention, arrest, displacement, and the loss of the individuals personal effects, the Fund for Empowerment alleged in court documents.Nearly a month later, a judge issued an injunction preventing the city from enforcing its camping ban against people who cant find shelter, as well as from seizing and throwing away peoples belongings. The lawsuit is ongoing. The DOJs June 2024 report stated that even after the injunction and new city policies were in place, city officials continued to arrest people for camping and to destroy peoples belongings without notice or the opportunity to reclaim them.ProPublica, as part of its investigation into cities handling of homeless peoples possessions, found that Phoenix rarely stored property seized from encampments. From May 2023 to 2024, the city responded to 4,900 reports from the public involving encampments, according to its records. The city said workers, trained to assess which items are property and which are trash, found items that could be stored at only 405 of the locations it visited. Not all of those belongings required storage because people may have removed them between a report of an encampment and the citys arrival. The city stored belongings 69 times. In January 2024, the city issued its own report in anticipation of the DOJs allegations. The city said it found nothing to support accusations that police interfered with the possessions of people experiencing homelessness. Phoenix officials also said in the report that although the city and police department welcome additional insights from the DOJ, they were unwilling to be subjected to a consent decree, a binding plan in which an appointed monitor oversees implementation of reforms.Attorneys and advocates said that the DOJs decision has no bearing on lawsuits filed by private attorneys alleging civil rights violations, including against people who are homeless. The ACLU this week also launched a seven-state effort to file records requests to hold police departments accountable, it said. Elizabeth Venable, lead community organizer with the Fund for Empowerment, who also helped the DOJ connect with the unhoused community in Phoenix, said she viewed the federal findings as a victory for unhoused people. Despite the retraction by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, Venable said, the report still has weight. No matter what Pam Bondi says, people are not going to forget it, especially people who learned about something that they were horrified by, she said.0 Comments 0 Shares 72 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COM25 hottest codpiece moments in pop culture historyOriginally a way to cover mens poles in 15th and 16th century Europe, men wore codpieces beneath their doublets with no other underwear, before the ingenious sartorial invention became a piece of armor, and then a sign of virility and power for codpiece poster boy Henry VIII.Now its a fashion statement, a sexy way to spice up an outfit, and a frequent part of leather fetish gear. Whatever your reason for wearing one, you have to admit that its a great way to cover up while showing off your impressive bulge. Much like jockstraps, what started as a practical piece of clothing has morphed over time into a sexy piece of clothing, only with codpieces, you can wear them right out in the open because they are meant to be seen.So whether your queer and kinky or a celeb sporting one for a movie role, the codpiece is undeniably hot!David Bowie in 'Labyrinth'David Bowie had men and women alike lusting after him when he sported a memorable codpiece while playing the goblin king in the 80s fantasy film Labyrinth.Alex and his Droogs in 'A Clockwork Orange'Alex and his Droogs wear all white with large codpieces over the top of their A Clockwork Orange pants. Its such an iconic look that its instantly recognizable and still used as a frequent Halloween costume today, despite the film coming out in 1971.Kristen StewartLong before Kristen Stewart came out of the closet, she started breaking away from her good girl image, and at the UK premiere of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 she wore a black lace body suit with a sparkly black codpiece that made a memorable red carpet moment. Sting in 'Dune'If Sting isnt your favorite part of David Lynchs Dune, then you need to rewatch it asap because a glistening Sting in nothing but a skimpy codpiece is literally the only thing we remember about that movie.Rowan Atkinson in 'Blackadder' (@) Rowan Atkinson sported animpressive and strange (think an upside-down Gonzo nose) codpiece in the British comedy Blackadder. John Travolta in 'Battlefield Earth'The films connection to Scientology and John Travoltas white guy dreadlocks is a true travesty, but we have to admit, his leather codpiece is formidable. Too bad the movie was not.George Clooney in 'Batman & Robin'There has been LOTS of talk over the years about nipples being added to the classic bat suit, but George Clooneys suit in Batman & Robin will always stick out in our memory for the large silver codpiece showing off how well endowed the Dark Knight is.Darth Vader in 'Star Wars'The evil Star Wars villain is never seen out of his iconic black armor, and while hes often partially covered by his black cloak, his codpiece is still hard to miss! Once you see it, youll understand how he could have sired Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.Tom Savini in 'From Dusk Till Dawn' (@) Horror special effects legend Tom Savini played Sex Machine in From Dusk Till Dawn, where the leather-clad character had a unique codpiece with a built-in revolver that could pop out and fire. Talk about conceal and carry!Immortan Joe in 'Mad Max: Fury Road'Immortan Joe, the mutated tyrannical post-apocalyptic leader in Mad Max: Fury Road, wears a metal codpiece, flanked by two pistols framing hisjunk. Wed almost say he beat From Dusk Till Dawn with this one, but the guns never fire during the movie. What a let down. Jojo Siwa (@) As pop star Jojo Siwa was shaking off her child star image, she posed in a sparkly codpiece and chest plate shaped like a man's chest on the cover of LadyGunn magazine. It was a bold stance that, predictably, led to a conservative freak-out. Sean Connery in 'Zardoz' (@) Is Sean Connery wearing a red suede codpiece or banana hammock in Zardoz? Its hard to tell, but what we do know is that the man is packing!Jethro Tulls Ian AndersonJethro Tulls frontman Ian Anderson was always ostentatiously dress on stage, but this codpiece was especially eye catching. Sam SmithNonbinary pop star Sam Smith wore a plaid, tartan codpiece with no pants and sky-high heels while walking in the Vivienne Westwood fashion show at Paris Fashion Week in 2024.James Franco in 'Your Highness'James Francos character in the comedy Your Highness wears skin-tight gray leggings that show off and large codpiece. His extra short tunic that shows off the impressive bulge only adds to the humor of any scene hes in.GWAR'sOderus Urungus (@) Heavy metal band GWAR is known for its elaborate and distinctively grotesque costumes, but the bands late frontman, Oderus Urungus, frequently sported giant codpieces. From creatures with too many teeth to a two-foot-long cuttlefish to Cthulhu, the legendary musician seemed to have a never-ending supply of monstrous codpieces.Sylvester Stallone in 'Judge Dredd'Sylvester Stallones entire costume in Judge Dredd is a mid-90s dream, but his codpiece is what reallystands out. Kiss' Gene Simmons (@) The four members of Kiss always dress up in costumes and face paint, but frontman Gene Simmons frequently sports large codpieces, including a spiked number and one that resembles a silver lobster tail.Codpiece in 'Doom Patrol'Codpiece is a villain on Doom Patrol, and like his name suggests, he has a huge codpiece. This DC baddies codpiece is a weapon, and in case you werent sure about why someone would want a gun in that location, he once said, Not everyone can handle a full load from this big gun.Henry VIIIHenry VIII is probably one of the most recognizable figures to ever wear a codpiece. His cloth codpiece is front and center in nearly every portrait of the former King of England, and its large size was intended to represents his power and virility. Alice CooperGodfather of shock rock Alice Cooper has donned a codpiece multiple time throughout his career, including while wearing a boa constrictor on stage in 1986 and on the cover of his Alice Cooper Trashes the World VHS tape.Tom Cruz in 'Rock of Ages'In the comedy jukebox musical Rock of Ages, Tom Cruz plays a tattooed rock star, who at one point trades out his leather pants for assless chaps and a silver demon codpiece with its tongue sticking out. Rock of Ages? More like C*ck of Ages because once you see it Ill stick with you for..well, ages.Howard SternShock jock Howard Stern went to the MTV Music Awards in 1992 dressed up as his Fartman persona, wearing a yellow crop-top superhero suit with a giant gold codpiece.Throb ZombieQuite possibly the sexiest drag king to ever grace our screens, Throb Zombie wore the spikiest codpiece in existence while on Dragula. WWW.UNCLOSETEDMEDIA.COMAs WorldPride DC Begins, A Look Back at the Eight Cities that Led the WayDesign by Sam Donndelinger.Subscribe nowWorldPride DC, which is expected to bring as many as 3 million visitors and $700 million to the citys economy, began on May 17 and will culminate on June 8 with a march. This is the ninth WorldPride and has already garnered controversy as it takes place in Americas capital city, where the Trump administration has dismantled LGBTQ rights and made relentless attacks against the queer community. Many countries have issued travel advisories for trans people visiting the U.S., and WorldPride organizers have cautioned international trans folks from attending. Despite this, hundreds of thousands of people will celebrate and protest over the next two weeks. The eight WorldPride events that have taken place over the last 25 years have all included challenges and triumphs. Heres a look at each of them through the lens of attendees who experienced it.Photo courtesy of Stefano Bolognini. The first WorldPride was held in Rome, the capital of Italy and home of the Vatican. The location was important: Italy wasand still isamong the weakest countries in Western Europe for LGBTQ rights, with gay marriage and non-binary gender markers still unrecognized today. The weeklong Pride was held in July during the Catholic Churchs Great Jubilee. Pope John Paul II was outraged, calling it an offence to the Christian values of a city that is so dear to the hearts of Catholics throughout the world and adding that homosexual attendees are intrinsically disordered. The Vatican even convinced the city government to withdraw its promise of $200,000 in financial support for the event. While the money was eventually returned due to backlash, the city still removed all of its official branding.Photo courtesy of Giovanni Dall'Orto.Despite this, the event was a huge success. It was beautiful, Renato Sabbadini, who helped organize the event, told Uncloseted Media.Sabbadini, who was in his twenties when he helped organize the event, says that while previous Rome Prides drew 10,000-20,000 people, WorldPride brought in 700,000 peopleso many that they couldnt all fit into the marchs destination, the ancient Roman chariot-racing stadium known as Circo Massimo.Photo courtesy G.dallortoSabbadini was a board member for the Italian LGBTQ rights group Arcigay and had helped draft the initial proposal for WorldPride. He was proud of what his work accomplished, both in size and in impact. He was most emotional seeing the sheer number of non-LGBTQ people who turned up to show that Italy was ready for change. The Italian population, for the first time, wanted somehow to assert the fact that Italy was no longer a country that could be considered simply as a sort of colony of the Vatican, but it was a secular country with its own consciousness and values, Sabbadini says.Subscribe nowPhoto by Yotam Ronen.Subscribe nowSix years later, the second WorldPride was held in Jerusalem. The locationa holy site for Judaism, Christianity and Islamwas once again chosen by WorldPrides international and official organizers to protest religious and state discrimination against the LGBTQ community. The region was also a controversial choice. While Israel is seen as the most progressive country for LGBTQ rights in this region, the Middle East is still home to many hostile countries, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Yemen, where you can be killed if found engaging in homosexual acts. The march was postponed twice, first due to Israels 2005 disengagement from Gaza and later because of the 2006 Israel-Lebanon War. Leaders of all three major Abrahamic religions opposed the event, saying that it would create the impression that homosexuality is acceptable. "They are creating a deep and terrible sorrow that is unbearable," Shlomo Amar, Israel's Sephardic chief rabbi, said in a news conference.Abdel Aziz Bukhari, a Sufi sheik, added, "We can't permit anybody to come and make the Holy City dirty. This is very ugly and very nasty to have these people come to Jerusalem."Photo by Yotam Ronen. While the event eventually took place in November, it was boycotted by many LGBTQ rights organizations in protest of Israels occupation in Palestine and invasion of Lebanon.Deeg Gold, a boycott organizer, says that the attention garnered by the boycott helped spread awareness about LGBTQ Palestinians and pro-Palestinian activism. They say it also helped popularize the term pinkwashing, which is now frequently used to describe the practice of using LGBTQ-friendly aesthetics for profit without actually supporting the community.Boycott flier, courtesy of Deeg Gold.It brought, for the first time, an international awareness that there are a lot of queers in Palestine.Photo by Tom Morris. At Londons WorldPride in 2012, the global LGBTQ community was still facing significant legal and social challenges. 40% of UN Member States still criminalized same-sex sexual acts. The event, which featured a march with 25,000 participants, aimed to confront these injustices by celebrating progress and highlighting the work still left to do.Photo courtesy of AVEN.The event also opened new doors for inclusivity, including for 42-year-old mathematician Michael Dor, who organized the first-ever Asexuality Visibility and Education Network (AVEN) Conference.Michael Dor presenting at the conference, via YouTube.Subscribe nowThere have been attempts before at having big events, but WorldPride really [made it happen], Dor told Uncloseted Media. The one-day conference brought together roughly 100 attendees from across the globe and included a keynote titled "Asexuality BC (Before Cake)," which traced the early development of the asexual (ACE) movement and highlighted the intersections between asexuality and non-binary identities. The usual argument is that ACEs are not really oppressed, says Dor. ACE is just about not wanting to have sex or not wanting a relationship. I disagree with it. A lot of what ACEs go through is actually similar to the wider LGBTQ movement [such as] feeling broken and feeling the orientation is not going to live up to other people's expectations.Dor says the conference was just extraordinary. She hugged the other organizer and said, You are the first other asexual person I've met in my life! She was so excited to be there, and said it was the one day in her life she felt she could be herself.Photo by Stacy DePontSubscribe nowBuilding off the momentum from London, WorldPride returned just two years later to Toronto, which is seen as one of the most LGBTQ-friendly cities in the world. Its also the largest city in Canada, one of the strongest countries in the world for LGBTQ rights.Kalyn Heffernan, the 38-year-old frontwoman for the queer and disabled hip-hop group Wheelchair Sports Camp, performed at the march alongside Tangled Arts, an organization that promotes disabled artists.Photo courtesy of Heffernan. It was a big deal to get to play at WorldPride in Torontopretty amazing, Heffernan told Uncloseted Media.Heffernan lives with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a disease where bones break easily. She actively advocates for queer disabled folkswho, she notes, were integral to the origins of Pride. She says the fight for LGBTQ rights must also include accessibility, intersectionality and justice for all bodies and identities. She adds that she doesnt feel like Pride represents the disabled community like it has in the past, in part because of all the corporate backing.Photo by Stacie DaPonte. While Heffernan had some mixed feelings about Torontos WorldPride, like for the large police presence at the marchwhich she finds antithetical to the LGBTQ movements radical historyshe says she was grateful for the opportunity and for what Pride represents, especially as LGBTQ rights continue to be under attack.Photo courtesy of Justin Seymour.Three years later, under the banner of Viva la Vida, or Live Life for non-Spanish speakers, WorldPride Madrid brought an estimated 3 million people into the heart of Chueca, the citys historic LGBTQ neighborhood.Photo by Barcex. From early grassroots activism to becoming one of the first countries to legalize same-sex marriage in 2005, Spain has emerged as one of the worlds most progressive nations when it comes to LGBTQ rights.Photo courtesy of Seymour. It was a very fun, very cool environment, says Justin Seymour, a straight man and staunch ally from Lafayette, Indiana.Photo by Barcex.Seymour, who was in Spain to visit his then-partners family, says his first Pride experience was unexpectedly welcoming. One guy I spoke with was like, Oh, youre straight? and I was like, Yeah. And he goes, Well, thats too bad. So, I felt very welcome.Photo courtesy of Seymour. What stood out to him most was the atmosphere of inclusivity, one that he had never seen in his conservative hometown. There were small details. They changed the lights to be two women walking. That was totally unnecessary but very cool, he says. One of the major buildings in Madrid had the pride flag draped over it. Everybody seemed really supportive and [to be] having a good time.He says that straight people have something to learn from Pride.Seymour also thinks straight people should embrace any discomfort they feel around Pride. Being a straight white guy, you kind of get to do whatever you want. You're welcome anywhere, he says. Being in the minority, that's not normal [for us] and can be uncomfortable. But its important to lean into.Subscribe nowPhoto by Ybridex AngeloDemon.Seymour recommends that everyone go to Pride. Getting a little uncomfortable and trying to get to know people and ask questions is crucial, he says, referring to the fact that studies show how interacting with members of different groups can reduce prejudice and lead to more empathy and understanding. Its educating yourself. Its a good way of getting rid of your ignorance, and getting familiar with the community in and of itself.Photo by Elvert Barnes. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, WorldPride 2019 took place in New York City. The 1969 riots were a notable turning point for LGBTQ rights. They began as a protest in response to police raids at the Stonewall Inn, a historic gay bar in New Yorks Greenwich Village. One year later, the first Pride marches would be held in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago to commemorate the riots.Photo by Fulbert.Due to the grassroots nature of the riots, the commercialization of WorldPride was a source of tension. As a result, the Reclaim Pride Coalition organized the Queer Liberation March, an alternative Pride that rejected corporate sponsorship and police presence. While the Queer Liberation March was initially made up of 8,000 people, it grew to 45,000 that same day. There was everyone together, everyone celebrating, millions of people. The city was just electrified that year.Lentz says the energy inside Stonewall was palpable. I joked that I couldnt even get into my own bar that weekend.Photo by Leif Jrgensen.Flash forward two years to Copenhagen and Malms joint Pride in 2021. The theme, #YouAreIncluded, took place in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and emphasized human rights for all people, regardless of sexuality, gender identity, race, religion, appearance, economic status, nationality, refugee status, health, HIV statusor any other factor.Video courtesy of Yates.Copenhagen really rolled out the red carpet for Pride. I've never seen so many rainbow flags in my life, Victor Yates, a writer and educator, told Uncloseted Media. Not only did I feel safe, but I felt welcomed to the city. It was such a beautiful experience because even people who weren't participating in Pride wanted to experience what was happening.Denmark is recognized as one of the most LGBTQ-friendly countries on earth and was the first to grant the right for same-sex couples to enter into registered partnerships in 1989.Yates, a Black gay man, grew up in Florida, where he was afraid of attending Pride events. In Jacksonville, I never saw representations of positive queer images. There were always billboards about not having an abortion and that being gay is a sin. And because of this, I grew up not wanting to attend Pride events.Victor Yates as a boy. Photo courtesy of Yates. He remembers riding the bus in the early 2000s and passing a Pride event in the park. The bus driver commented, Where's the police when you need them? And it just took me aback, he says. This isn't the 60s, this isn't the 50s. We're living in a modern time where we have modern ideas, but there are still some people who believe that queer people should be arrested for just living their life authentically.Video courtesy of Yates.Yates experience in Copenhagen transformed his understanding of what Pride could be. I was like, This is magical, he says.Video courtesy of Yates.Yates says part of the unity he felt was because of the planning that went into the event. There were active conversations about how to welcome people to Copenhagen Pride. And I felt like every building, every organization, participated. Every encounter that I had with someone who was local was pleasant. I didn't feel othered while I was there.Photo by Tristien. In 2023, Sydney, Australia hosted WorldPride, after the country released a rainbow birth certificate in 2022, where citizens could opt to not list their gender. But despite these political advances, there was controversy around high ticket prices, with the Sydney WorldPride organization receiving backlash for the whopping $1,497 they charged for three-day passes.Photo courtesy of Alan Maurice.Alan Maurice, a South-Asian gay man living in Sydney, has fond memories of marching across the Sydney Harbor Bridge. We don't often get an opportunity here in Sydney to close off a main artery and turn it into this big rainbow march, he told Uncloseted Media. There were queers and allies and all kinds of people went and crossed. And so that was a wonderful feeling.Photo courtesy of Alan Maurice (right).Though Maurice enjoyed his time at WorldPride, he felt there was a lack of South-Asian representation at the event. The Indian subcontinent's got billions of people, so there's a pretty large percentage of queer people. Not a single person was invited to present or speak during the Human Rights part of it so that was really disappointing, he says. Despite this, Maurice left WorldPride feeling the event had strengthened the LGBTQ community.Additional reporting by Soph Kristen and Nico DiAlessandro.Fact-checking by Amanda Donndelinger. WWW.PRIDE.COMWho needs Twitter when a queer woman just created a social app for the LGBTQ+ community?Finding ways to connect and hold onto queer joy is tricky in 2025, and while you may think another app is the last thing you need to accomplish this, J. Zakira Wise thinks technology may be the key to bringing LGBTQ+ people together. On May 14, Wise launched MyPride, a LGBTQ+ community-driven app built by and for queer people to connect people to mutual aid, local events, and meaningful social connection during Pride Month and beyond.Think Bluesky, but with ways to connect you to events and organizations that matter to queer people. The combination of giving birth to her first child and the changing political landscape that has particularly impacted queer youth, led Wise to create MyPride, a LGBTQ+ community-driven app built by and for queer people to connect people to mutual aid, local events, and meaningful social connection, not just during Pride Month, but all year round.Given the current political climate, I wanted to create a digital community space for people to share queer joy, news, resources, and events, Wise tells PRIDE. As the major platforms roll back protections for the LGBTQ+ community, it feels more important than ever to have a social space built by us and for us.Back in 2019, Wise created Mesh, a company that creates custom social networks, but by the time the end of 2024 had rolled around she was no longer satisfied and wanted to focus full time to support the LGBTQ+ community.MyPride was born from one queer woman's desire to use the technology she had already created for Mesh to provide tools for organizers to find, build, and grow their communities. On the MyPride app, users can join private or public groups based on shared interests, identities, or location, discover everything from Pride Month festivals to educational workshops in their area, get a curated and verified news feed with timely updates on issues facing the LGBTQ+ community, and get crucial access to health, advocacy, and educational resources. And unlike X (formerly Twitter), the social app is committed to content moderation and safety. Members are even given tools to report hateful content or accounts, control who sees their content, and managed who can join their groups and events. "My hope is that MyPride will become the digital hub for queer people and organizations to connect with each other, share news impacting their local communities, and celebrate their Pride, Wise says. MyPride is available now for free on iOS and Android devices.0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PROPUBLICA.ORGA Tennessee School Expelled a 12-Year-Old for a Social Post. Experts Say It Didnt Properly Assess If He Made a Threat.by Aliyya Swaby ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up for Dispatches, a newsletter that spotlights wrongdoing around the country, to receive our stories in your inbox every week. The day after a teenager opened fire in a Nashville high school cafeteria early this year, officials in the district scrambled to investigate potential threats across their schools. Rumors flew that the shooter, who killed a student before turning the gun on himself, had accomplices at large. At DuPont Tyler Middle School, the assistant principals most urgent concern was a 12-year-old boy. James, a seventh grader with a small voice and mop of brown hair, had posted a concerning screenshot on Instagram that morning, Jan. 23. He was arrested at school hours later and charged with making a threat of mass violence. The assistant principal had to complete a detailed investigation called a threat assessment, as required by Tennessee law. First, she and other school employees had to figure out whether James threat was valid. Then, they had to determine what actions to take to help a potentially troubled child and protect other students.Threat assessments are not public, but the district gave ProPublica a copy of James with his fathers permission. School officials did not carry out the threat assessment properly, according to experts who reviewed it at ProPublicas request. Instead, the school expelled James without investigating further and skipped crucial steps that would help him or protect others. (We are using the childs middle name to protect his privacy.)The way school officials handled James case also exposes glaring contradictions in two recent Tennessee laws that aim to criminalize school threats and require schools to expel students who make them with minimal recourse, transparency or accountability. One obvious issue in the threat assessment, according to the experts, appeared on Page 20. That page features a checklist of options for how the school could address its concerns about James, including advising his parents to secure guns in their home and ensuring he has access to counseling. Schools should take steps like these even when a student is expelled, according to John Van Dreal, a former school administrator who has spent decades helping schools improve their violence prevention strategies. Officials at James school opted for none of the options they could have taken. Instead, the assistant principal wrote under the list in blue pen, student was expelled.Thats actually about the most dangerous thing you can do for the student, Van Dreal said, and honestly for the community. Van Dreals name appears in tiny print at the bottom of each page of James threat assessment, because he helped the school district set up its current process. After ProPublica shared details about James case, Van Dreal said, What Im hearing is probably more training and more examples are needed. One page of the threat assessment form, created by John Van Dreal, used in James case (Obtained by ProPublica. Highlighted by ProPublica.) Nashvilles school district does not collect data on how many threat assessments it does or how many result in expulsions, according to spokesperson Sean Braisted. The goal is always to ensure the safety and well-being of all students while addressing incidents appropriately, Braisted wrote. He later declined to answer questions ProPublica asked about James case, although James father signed a privacy waiver allowing the school to do so.Tennessee schools must submit data to the state on how effective their threat assessments are but the state does not release that information to the public. School districts are required to get training on threat assessments, but lawyers and parents say they often carry them out inconsistently and use varying definitions for what makes a threat valid. Two recent contradictory Tennessee laws make it even harder to handle student threats. One mandates a felony charge for anyone who makes a threat of mass violence at school, without requiring police to investigate intent or credibility. The other requires schools to determine that a threat of mass violence is valid before expelling a student for at least a year.James alleged threat was a screenshot of a text exchange. One person said they would shoot up a Nashville school and asked if the other would attack a different school. Yea, the other person replied. I got some other people for other schools. The FBI flagged the post for school officials and police. James told school officials that he reposted the screenshot from the Instagram page of a Spanish-language news site. The Tennessean published a story in April detailing James arrest and overnight stay in juvenile detention. The story, and the ones ProPublica and WPLN published last year on other arrests, shows how quickly police move to take youth into custody.Schools in Tennessee are supposed to follow a higher standard than police when it comes to investigating threats of mass violence: Theyre supposed to determine whether a threat is valid. For instance, in Hamilton County, a few hours southeast of Nashville, school officials chose not to expel two students even after police arrested them for threats of mass violence, ProPublica and WPLN previously reported.Yet when James father appealed his sons expulsion at a March school district hearing, the assistant principal said repeatedly that James had to be expelled simply because hed been arrested. We did not investigate further, she said. James father shared an audio recording of the hearing with ProPublica. James, who turned 13 in February, is small for his age, still awaiting the teenage growth spurt of his three older brothers. At the hearing, his voice was soft but assured as he explained what happened. He said he understands why he shouldnt have posted the screenshot. But he said he wanted to warn others and feel heroic.Melissa Nelson, a national school safety consultant based in Pennsylvania who trains school employees on managing threats, reviewed James threat assessment at ProPublicas request and concluded that this is gross mismanagement of a case. This tool has not been used as intended, she said. They didnt do a behavior threat assessment. They filled out some paperwork. After the police took James away, assistant principal Angela Post convened a team of school employees to decide whether to expel him. They used a threat assessment form that Van Dreal had developed, one of the most commonly used across the country, to guide them on how to respond. According to Van Dreal, Metro Nashville Public Schools is in an early phase of using the form, and its staff have flown to Oregon at least once to learn from his consulting group. Van Dreal tells school officials to use the threat assessment to collect information about a student in trouble and address behavior that could signal future violence. If school officials worried that James was planning an act of violence, they should have pursued some of the many options outlined in the threat assessment to get him help and protect the school from harm. Instead, they chose none of those options.Experts said that is one of the biggest mistakes school officials make. Even if a child is expelled, what I always train is: Out of sight, out of mind doesnt help, Nelson said. Expelling a child doesnt deescalate the situation or move them off the pathway of violence. A lot of times, it makes it worse.School officials also failed to seek out more information that could have helped them figure out whether the threat was valid. Post checked a box acknowledging that she hadnt notified James parents of the threat assessment. She wrote beside it, as an explanation, student was arrested and expelled. On a line asking whether James had access to weapons, Post wrote that the threat assessment team did not know.Interviewing parents is a crucial part of the process, said Rob Moore, a Tennessee psychologist who has helped schools conduct threat assessments for more than two decades. When you sit in that room with those parents and you collect data from them, you really get a sense of things that teachers would never know, that the administrators would never know.Although school officials did not opt to investigate further or to monitor James, the threat assessment indicated they had concerns he may pose a threat. In response to a question about whether James caregivers, peers or staff were concerned about his potential for acting out aggressively, Post checked yes and wrote, He has little to no supervision in discipline structures at home but might think he could get away with it.And although James told school administrators he was not a participant in the text thread he shared on Instagram, Post wrote that he had indicated a plan and intention to harm others. See attached image. Shows location, intent to harm, targets and date, she wrote, referencing a screenshot of James Instagram post. She also wrote that he had a motive: The post indicated that he was being made fun of. See attached image. The threat assessment included questionnaires from James teachers; three out of four said they did not have concerns about potential aggression. One teacher, who taught James social studies, cited his disciplinary history: using racial slurs, fighting another student and researching racially motivated things on the school computer. Dad seemed disengaged in conference & somewhat unaware of the childs school or social or personal issues, she wrote.James dad and stepmom did not know that the threat assessment accused them of lax supervision at home. Thats because they didnt even know the threat assessment existed until ProPublica told them about it, more than a week after it took place.Upon reading the document, their first emotion, after shock, was anger. They said they hadnt known about the incident with the racial slur, and it was not directly referenced in a copy of James disciplinary history. But they felt upset at the insinuation that they had not been involved in James life. Weve been asking for help, for grades, tutoring, his dad, Kyle Caldwell, said. And we really didnt get any. James relaxes at home with his dad, Kyle Caldwell, and the family dog. James was put on court supervision following his arrest. (Andrea Morales for ProPublica) James said that in early September, his social studies teacher taught the class about World War II. He said the teacher didnt answer enough of his questions, so he started searching online. The school flagged that he had looked up swastikas. I didnt know much about it, he said. Thats why I searched it.As part of his discipline, the school prohibited him from using its computers. His stepmother, Breanne Metz, shared emails she sent to James teachers explaining she and Caldwell were worried about his grades and wanted to help him catch up.James had been struggling with his parents contentious divorce; after his mom lost custody of him, he hadnt been able to see her in months. Worried, his dad and stepmom arranged for him to see a school counselor. James said the counselor tried to connect with him through their mutual love of video games over about five sessions, which was nice, though it didnt really help. Post wrote in the threat assessment that James had disclosed confidential information to the school counselor that would support a feeling of being overwhelmed or distraught. Then James lost his best friend: Lieutenant Dan, a three-legged pitbull-lab mix named after a character from the movie Forrest Gump. Dan joined the family when he and James were both 1, and he died of cancer last November. As James describes it, he was at capacity with the emotions he was dealing with, and his dogs death was the tipping point. When someone you love or something you love for your whole life passes away, you cant hold it, he said. He sat in class feeling sad and exhausted. Records show school staff talked with James parents about his attendance at school and he was disciplined for not complying with an unspecified request. Then in mid-December, he began a fight with another student, who had been horseplaying with him off and on and went too far, according to the school report. The following month, he was arrested and expelled. In the days after the arrest, Caldwell considered hiring a lawyer. Reading the threat assessment added the urgency for him to finally make the call. The puzzle pieces werent coming together in their story, he said. It really looked like they were going to try to be sweeping their stuff under the rug.In mid-March, James sat at the oval table in the district conference room next to his father and across from assistant principal Post. He wore a gray vest over his T-shirt in preparation for an appeal hearing that would determine whether he would be allowed back in school. It had been nearly two months since he had set foot on district property.Caldwell brought his private lawyer, a rare resource for a school hearing. He showed up that morning nervous but eager to make his case directly to school administrators. The public rarely gets insight into what happens at a school appeal hearing, but Caldwell shared an audio recording with ProPublica.Post started by reading aloud the social media post that landed James in trouble, stumbling over the shorthand and unfamiliar internet slang. Then, it was James turn to speak for himself.Lisa Currie, the school districts director of discipline, asked him to explain why he had reposted the screenshot of the texts. You do understand that once you reposted them from somewhere else, it gave the appearance that this was a conversation that you were having? she said.I just wanted to let people know, feel heroic, James said. I didnt want more people to get hurt. James enjoys building and painting the model F-15E fighter jet his dad bought him. (Andrea Morales for ProPublica) Over the next 40 minutes, Caldwells lawyer questioned Post about the process the school used to determine whether James should be expelled. When he pressed her for direct responses, Post repeatedly said that law enforcement and not the school held the primary responsibility for investigating the threat. Although the law requires schools to use a threat assessment to determine if the threat is valid, Post and her team based the expulsion entirely on the polices arrest. Once local police take over a case, she said, then its not really our investigation anymore. Was it your assessment at the time that he wrote this statement, like physically typed it out on a computer and posted it? the lawyer asked. We did not make that determination, Post said. She said school staff did not look deeply through James disciplinary history as part of the threat assessment. Thats not necessarily the purpose of the threat assessment, she told the lawyer. Because James had been expelled and arrested, there would not be a reason to be concerned about the return of a student.Currie indicated that Posts approach was supported by district leaders. The purpose of the threat assessment is to determine appropriate supports and interventions around the students while theyre in the building, she said. Post and Currie did not respond to ProPublicas requests for comment or to written questions.Post told the lawyer she couldnt remember whether school staff investigated the origin of the original threat. So if there was an actual threat made and somebody else authored this threat, then we dont know who that is. Would that be a fair statement? the lawyer asked. That is possible, Post responded. She said James didnt initially say that he had shared the post to warn others and it wasnt her place to decide whether he intended to make a threat. I dont want to think, Oh, hes not going to do that. And then something just like the previous day happened, she said, referring to the Antioch High School shooting. Once James was arrested, its in MNPDs hands, Post said, referring to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. The lawyer asked Post to explain whether the threat assessment could ever have changed school officials decision to expel James: What if school officials found out that the threat was not valid? Had yall come on information that he had not written these texts, he asked, would it have changed the punishment? We would have had to let our [school resource officer] know and they would have had to go through the MNPD channels, she said. You did not at that time know whether he wrote those text messages or not? the lawyer asked again.Correct, Post said. Then, it was Caldwells turn to speak. He criticized the schools decision to leave him out of the initial disciplinary process. He would have explained to James why he should go through appropriate channels to report a threat instead of posting it on Instagram. As a dad, he said, there was a teachable parent moment that I didnt get to have.As the hearing came to a close, Currie told Caldwell to expect a decision soon. The arrest and expulsion cleaved James life in two. He now begins many sentences with the phrase before everything happened. Before everything happened, he would ride his bike with his brothers and friends to explore the forested land and abandoned houses in the surrounding neighborhoods. They found all sorts of strange garbage: a fire engines license plate, wooden pictures of demonic rituals, a dentist chair adorned with rusty handcuffs. James looks for four-leaf clovers in his backyard. (Andrea Morales for ProPublica) He was able to come home from his night in detention in exchange for agreeing to pretrial diversion with six months of court supervision, a common outcome for students charged with threats of mass violence. While under supervision, he wasnt allowed to use the computer or phone unsupervised by an adult and was mostly restricted to the streets around his house. Its a big neighborhood, but once you get used to it, its small, he said. The court recently lifted his supervision, earlier than expected. Because he had completed the terms of pretrial diversion, his case was dismissed. His parents declined Metro Nashville Public Schools offer to enroll him in the local alternative school, which primarily serves kids with disciplinary issues who were suspended or expelled from their original schools. Instead, they enrolled him at an online public charter school; he starts in the fall. As James waited to hear the result of the expulsion hearing, he followed the schedule his dad and stepmom created for him less a rigorous academic curriculum than a routine to keep him occupied while his stepmom takes calls in her home office. He gets most excited about the hands-on activities, like building and painting the model F-15E fighter jet his dad bought him online. One night in early April, tornadoes touched down just outside Nashville. James, his five siblings, and two dogs huddled with Caldwell and Metz in the windowless laundry room; the kids wore helmets in case of falling debris. When they got up the next morning, groggy but unharmed, Caldwell checked the mailbox: A letter from the school district was inside.District officials had reviewed the information from the hearing and determined that there was not a due process violation of MNPS expulsion process. James was still expelled. Caldwell had prepared his son for this outcome so that he wouldnt be devastated. James would later joke that the storm had delivered the bad news. The letter gave the family the option to escalate the appeal through the district process. But the odds of winning and the costs of retaining the lawyer made the effort feel futile. The more the family fought back, the more anxious the 13-year-old felt about his future. Would he feel even worse if they lost again? Would people start to think of him as a bad kid? That afternoon, talking with his dad about the letter, James quietly considered these questions. Then he went outside to watch the storm clouds. Paige Pfleger of WPLN contributed reporting.0 Comments 0 Shares 36 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.UNCLOSETEDMEDIA.COMHow Apps Like Grindr and Sniffies Are Fueling the Meth Crisis Among Gay MenThis story is written in partnership with Queer Kentucky, a diverse LGBTQ-run nonprofit based in Louisville, Kentucky working to bolster and enhance queer culture and health.Photo by Jon Cherry for Uncloseted Media and Queer Kentucky. Design by Sam Donndelinger.Subscribe nowAt 21 years old, Robert McAllister remembers unlocking his phone in Louisville, Kentucky to a grid of bodies on Grindr, the gay hook-up app.To the average American, many terms and symbols in user bios read like a foreign language: PnP, Tina and parTy, or the crystal ball, ice cream and diamond emoji. At the time, McAllister also had no clue what these terms meant. After chatting with multiple men, he met up with one of them later that night. Before they started having sex, the guy pulled out a plastic bag of white powder from his backpack and asked McAllister if he wanted to partake. He snorted it like cocaine. And for whatever reason, I was like, Oh, well, cocaine isn't that bad, so I tried some, McAllister, now 27, told Uncloseted Media and Queer Kentucky. The powder he snorted was actually crystal meth, a highly addictive drug that can ravage the body and mind and lead to psychosis, organ failure and irreversible brain damage.Photo by Jon Cherry for Uncloseted Media and Queer Kentucky.I remember thinking, Wow, I want to do that all the time, says McAllister. He says the addiction got so bad that the only people he would interact with for months would be the hookups he used with. I would seek out people that had it in their profile, says McAllister, who was addicted to meth for four years. I would invite them to my apartment to use with me just because I didn't have anybody else around. At that point I had lost my job, my family really didn't want anything to do with me, and so the app was my excuse for social interaction.Photo by Jon Cherry for Uncloseted Media and Queer Kentucky.McAllisters experience is common. Party and Play (PnP) culture, also known as chemsex, is exactly what it sounds like: the use of drugs like GHB, ketamine and meth to enhance sexual desire, arousal and pleasure. The practice is most prevalent amongst gay and bi men, who use meth or similar drugs at three times the rate of heterosexual men, according to a 2014 study from the United Kingdom. For 25% of the guys who engage in PnP culture like McAllister, it becomes a severe problem. While drug overdose deaths in the United States declined slightly in 2023 for the first time since 2018, deaths from psychostimulants like meth rose, killing 36,251 Americans in 2023. Thats just over 3,000 lives a month, or 100 lives a day. And the epidemic is even worse in rural states like Kentucky. As meth addiction continues to devastate the gay community, hook-up apps like Grindr and Sniffies which make hundreds of millions of dollars a yearare where PnP culture thrives. One 2023 survey found that 91% of dating app users had a negative experience with drugs, and 1 in 4 dating app users deleted an app because of drug-related concerns.[Dating apps] are making lots of money from this community and the biggest problem that [we are] facing is not HIV, it is drug addiction, says Ignacio Labayen de Inza, CEO and co-founder of Controlling Chemsex, a charity that provides interventions for chemsex users. People are overdosing, people are suicidal, people are suffering from sexual assaults, they are psychotic, they are losing jobs, they are ending up homeless. And Grindr is the biggest vehicle that people use to get these drugs. So what are the apps doing to combat an epidemic that has been exacerbated by the easy access to meth on their platforms?Photo by Jon Cherry for Uncloseted Media and Queer Kentucky. The Risk of Hook-Up AppsSmartphone hook-up apps, which hit the mainstream in the 2010s, have long been associated with a greater risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among queer men. But emerging research suggests they also facilitate drug use among queer men, 15% of whom have used meth within the last year and 23% of whom have used it at least once in their lifetime. A 2017 study found that gay hook-up apps, including Grindr, significantly increased motivational substance use, and approximately 1 in 10 dating app users engaged in substance use after being persuaded on the apps. The apps know this is a problem. Sniffies is an app which features an interactive map known for its anonymity and showcases pictures of users genitals and butts nearby. In an email to Uncloseted Media and Queer Kentucky, they wrote that their users are significantly more likely to engage in chemsex and meth use compared to users on other platforms. They say a notable percentage of their users have reported deleting their accounts due to drug-related concerns. One of the major problems is that these apps enable easy access to the drugs, according to Kentucky-based Grindr users Uncloseted Media and Queer Kentucky spoke with. You can see it everywhere on dating apps, says Chris Hackenberg, who first used meth at 19 years old during a Grindr hookup. He says the drug opened a door to a level 1,000 happiness.Hackenberg, now 23, remembers staying up for seven days driving around Florida looking to PnP. From Jacksonville to Orlando to Miami, he would drive for hours searching for a new place to geolocate himself on Grindr to find a new selection of men who were ready to use meth with him.I think Grindr and Sniffies turn a blind eye to all these drugs. Grindr is so well-known for finding drugs. Its just so easy, he says.Subscribe for LGBTQ-focused, accountability journalism. What Are the Apps Doing? The epidemic of crystal meth addiction and PnP culture among gay men has been an issue since the late 1990s, long before smartphones. But the most dramatic increase in meth-related deaths and usage occurred from around 2015 to 2019, when overdose deaths soared by 180%. At the same time, Grindr exploded in popularity: In 2015, it was reported to have 10.5 million global users and make $38.1 million in revenue.Grindr and Sniffies declined multiple requests for an interview for this story. Instead, Grindr directed Uncloseted Media to their work with a UK nonprofit, The Love Tank, that provides safer chillouts guides on their website for information on sexualized drug use. In the guide, they provide information on harm reduction, such as how to check in with yourself before you use, how to determine proper dosage and how to handle overdoses. In an email, The Love Tank told Uncloseted Media and Queer Kentucky that Grindr promotes their guides through inbox and pop-up broadcast messages on the app, but only in the UK region.Screenshot of their pop-up. Courtesy of Grindr. In the U.S., Grindr works with the nonprofit Building Online Healthy Communities and has a similar pop-up for all users.Labayen de Inza, of Controlling Chemsex, says that this is not enough. Clearly pop-ups and guides arent working because the problem [of chemsex addiction] is still an issue, he says. If Im horny, Im not going to check my pop-ups. And sometimes people are not planning to chill. Sometimes people are having horrible psychosis and paranoia and [are] looking for help. People tell me, I want to stop. I have to stop, or I'm going to die. The guides arent going to help with that.In the past, Grindr has gotten bad press for allowing drug dealers to use the app. In 2022, detectives that conducted a Florida investigation titled Swipe Left for Meth charged 68 suspects for selling drugs on Grindr and other hook-up apps, causing nearly 280 grams of meth to be seizedthe equivalent of roughly 1,400 doses.Since then, Grindrs community guidelines say they have cracked down on banning profiles centered around or mainly consisting of drug content and that they prohibit images that are focused on advertising or promoting drug use as well as emojis commonly associated with buying/ selling. However, users say that simply putting a capital T, which is not banned, somewhere in their bios is enough to signal that theyre ready to PnP.And these bans may not work: Uncloseted Media found five references to PnP after using the app for only 15 minutes in Louisville, Kentucky.Screenshots via Grindr.Sniffies, meanwhile, has a resource page with instructions on how to use chemical drugs safely as well as links to harm reduction resources like syringe access and overdose prevention. Labayen De Inza questions, though, whether users will ever seek out a resource page while using the apps.In addition, Sniffieswhich has seen explosive regional growth in 2024has a feature where folks can list what substances they are comfortable with, though users cannot filter for other peoples drug preferences. In a data report that Sniffies pulled for Queer Kentucky, 18% of users selected No PNP under their drug preferences.Users we spoke with say they wish the apps had a feature where you could filter out folks who are looking to engage in PnP. One 2023 survey by Sniffies public health partner found that 4 out of 5 participants wanted to be able to filter by drug use practices.Legal ImmunityWhile it is likely that illegal drug use is occurring on these apps, they have Section 230 immunity, meaning that Grindr and Sniffies arent liable for any illegal activity that occurs on their apps and arent liable for the addictions stemming from the platforms. No one wants to do anything, Labayen de Inza says. Its really difficult to digest the fact that organizations know what is happening to the community. We cannot do very much because we are working on pride parades or HIV prevention. Those are important things. But lots of people won't be able to go to the parade because they will be psychotic or they will be suicidal [because of meth addiction].Labayen de Inza, who is in recovery for chemsex addiction, has spent six years on Grindr connecting with folks who have questions about drug use. He says he spoke with over 13,000 users in his first year.He also surveyed Grindr users in 2019 and found that 10% of the 2,000 respondents were using meth. Of those who said they had used, 90% had a premium subscription to the app, a percentage far higher than the roughly 7.5% of all users who pay.Grindr CEO George Arison did not respond to Uncloseted Medias request for an interview. Apps Become TriggersUsers in recovery from meth also report risking relapse on Grindr and Sniffies.Hackenberg started recovery in 2023 after he contracted HIV from injecting meth with a hookup. He says he still cant use Grindr or Sniffies without relapsing, which is difficult because they are his go-to platforms for meeting guys. I would try to get on the apps after moving to make friends, but I just couldnt do it, he says. As soon as I start going on Grindr, I get the same head buzz as I did when I would smoke Tina. Every time Ive relapsed, it was facilitated by the apps, he says, adding that he has slipped a few times in his two years of recovery.Mark Just, a 44-year-old finance analyst, started using meth as a way to build community in rural South Carolina, which only had a bookstore and a park as queer-friendly spots. I mean, that was the only avenue to meet people, he told Uncloseted Media and Queer Kentucky. Now 20 years sober and in a relationship, he says when he tried using the apps to meet people, he had to be careful. The question comes once you match and you're chatting, he says. PnP or parTy or the puff emoji. I was just trying to meet people, but it would come up over and over again. 1 in 3 guys would ask.The temptation is powerful, he says. Its like giving up Krispy Kreme donuts and then someone showing up to your house with a dozen of your favorite donuts. Your body goes into craving mode, even though you haven't been exposed to it in so long.In a perfect world, they should make it similar to Tinder, where they don't show you people that you aren't interested in based on your demographic. So filtering people based on [drug use] would be helpful.Subscribe for investigative, LGBTQ journalism. What Do We Do?Ignacio Labayen de Inza says that the apps have to be a part of the solution because they are the ones providing a space where users can easily access the drug.He thinks resources for support and harm reduction for chemsex need to be front and center on the apps and constantly visible. There needs to be a pinned square called Chem Sex Support so people know exactly where to go for help and they dont have to leave the app, he says. He and his team, who are grant-funded and offer their services for free, are already providing this resource to Grindr users but are constantly getting banned from the app because it violates the apps user guidelines. The reality is that people are desperate and they dont know where to go, he says. Chemsex support is very unavailable.Example of intervention on Grindr, courtesy of Controlling Chemsex.Example of intervention on Grindr, courtesy of Controlling Chemsex. There needs to be a bigger conversation, says Christian Parker, executive director of the community nonprofit Gay & Sober. The epidemic of meth in the gay community is a perfect storm. There is loneliness, isolation, and stigma all tied together.Sean Young, executive director of the University of California Institute for Prediction Technology, says that the apps dont bear all the responsibility, but silence is not working.I think it's the responsibility of the technology company to have a safe environment, which right now they're not, he says. But the apps don't have the knowledge about substance use to know how to do these types of interventions, and it could backfire if they tried to start doing this. The solution to this is that technology companies should come to the table with public health officials and with individuals who are using the apps and start a conversation.I would love to have the opportunity to speak with someone from Grindr, says Labayen de Inza. To say, Let's work together. Let's do something effective.SharePhoto by Jon Cherry for Uncloseted Media and Queer Kentucky.McAllister, who became addicted to meth after his first time trying it with a Grindr hookup, says that education, online support andmost importantlya destigmatization about meth use would have helped him be more careful.Photo by Jon Cherry for Uncloseted Media and Queer Kentucky. Its all still somewhat taboo and behind closed doors, so I had no idea what it was when I first used it, he says. The dating apps are just enabling that by saying Yes, you can put that [PnP] tagline in your profile, but they're not doing anything to educate people about what that means. We'll just turn a blind eye to it and let people do it, he says.If objective, nonpartisan, rigorous, LGBTQ-focused journalism is important to you, please consider making a tax-deductible donation through our fiscal sponsor, Resource Impact, by clicking this button:Donate to Uncloseted Media0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews

NEWSISOUT.COMThe real-life impact of delaying gender-affirming careThe attack on trans rights, including gender affirming care for minors, did not begin with the Trump administration. The persecution of and harmful rhetoric about the trans community vastly predates Donald Trumps presidency, not to mention the onslaught of legislation against the trans community across the globe, includingthe United Kingdoms ruling excluding trans women from the legal definition of women. Yet, its evident that, since January 20, 2025, the United States has experienced an unprecedented targeting of trans rights.Since Trump took office, its estimated that886 anti-trans bills are currently under consideration in the US, and that number is expected to increase over time. So far, in 2025 alone, 97 anti-trans bills have passed in the United States. At the state level and federal level, many bills specifically target trans minors, primarily with attempted bathroom bans, sports bans and bans on gender-affirming care. One of the most pressing of those attacks is Trumps attempt viaexecutive orderto cut federal funding to institutions that provide such care to minors, whom they define as anyone under 19.This focus on banning gender-affirming care has increased under the Trump administration, which is a strategy that was clear throughout his 2024 campaign. Pera fact sheet put out by GLAAD, Trumps anti-trans talking points on the campaign trail included: outlawing gender-affirming care for minors, cutting federal funding for schools that promote inclusivity, and banning transgender athletes from sports teams aligned with their gender identity.A report by CBS Newsestimated that Trump and his allies spent tens of millions of dollars on anti-trans ads during his 2024 campaign. The same report confirmed that Make America Great Again, Inc. (MAGA) independently spent about $1.1 million on similar ads.Americans in general have also shifted to a less favorable opinion of trans people, witha survey from the Pew Research Centershowing that, compared to 2022, Americans are now more in favor of laws restricting protections for trans people. The survey reflected a 10-percentage point increase in favorability for bans on gender-affirming care for trans minors, an 8-percentage point increase in favorability for sports bans, and an 8-percentage point increase in support of bathroom bans. However, many of these talking points represent misconceptions and misinformation. One prominent example from Trumps 2024 campaign was the notion that children were going to school andgetting gender-affirming surgery(which is unequivocally false). Perthe Trans Can Work organization, other common myths and misconceptions about gender affirming care include that it is unsafe/experimental, not backed by science, and likely to lead to regret.Likewise, the National Association of Social Workersidentified myths and misconceptions such as children receiving medical procedures/surgeries, puberty blockers causing irreversible changes, and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) being harmful to long-term health, among others. The truth is it is rare for anyone under the age of 18 to receive gender affirming surgery. One study, which included a cohort of 522,605 pediatric patients from 2018 to 2021, found that only .02% of patients were minors who had received gender affirming surgery. Of those .02%, most were 16 years old or older and were specifically getting chest surgery. While gender-affirming surgery for minors is therefore exceedingly rare in the United States, gender affirming care for minors can include puberty blockers and hormone therapy. Yet, the aforementioned misconceptions persist, and, as identified above, continue to be pushed by politicians as well as organizations likethe Heritage Foundation. The previously mentioned beliefs about puberty blockers and HRT are also false. For most children, especially those who are pre-pubescent, gender-affirming care is social and mental health related. This includes social transition involving clothing, hairstyles, names and pronouns, etc. In terms of mental health, organizations likethe Gender Clinic at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphiaorthe Gender Services department at Boston Childrens Hospitalconnect families with psychologists and social workers who are informed and trained in gender affirming care and related mental health needs.According tothe Human Rights Campaign, For patients seeking out gender-affirming medical care, they often receive counseling for extended periods of time. If medications or surgery are part of their gender journey, they are only prescribed after further assessments to ensure they meet prescribing criteria. This can include but is not limited to documentation and referral letters, parental consent, and ongoing mental health support. At all stages, gender-affirming care is only delivered after patients and their families have been counseled, and informed consent has been given.PerAdvocates for Trans Equality, puberty blockers are also a temporary, reversible way for trans minors to put a pause on puberty as they, and their families, work with doctors to determine the best, safest and healthiest path forward on an individual level.By contrast, several effects of puberty are irreversible once theyve occurred, which also discredits the notion that trans kids can simply wait until they are adults to make these decisions. These changes, which puberty blockers can keep at bay temporarily, can be incredibly distressing for trans people and can directly impact their mental health and well-being. Delaying gender-affirming care for minors, therefore, can and does cause direct harm. What is also abundantly clear is that gender affirming care is life-saving care, and thats more than just a slogan. Per aStanford University School of Medicine study, the odds of severe psychological distress were reduced by 222%, 153%, and 81% for those who began hormone therapy in early adolescence, late adolescence, or adulthood, respectively. The odds of previous-year suicidal ideation were also 135%, 62%, and 21% lower in patients who began hormone therapy in early adolescence, late adolescence, or adulthood, respectively, when compared to a control group. These numbers are clear: gender affirming care, especially when begun in early adolescence, can help to reduce thoughts of suicide, which, according tothe Trevor Projects 2024 survey, affects an estimated 46% of transgender and nonbinary young people. These stats directly disprove several claims made by the Trump administration regarding what gender-affirming care, especially for minors, actually entails. Ultimately, many professionals in the field, includingthe American Academy of Pediatrics, continue to back gender-affirming care such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy for trans kids, and their surveys, studies, and statistics reinforce that much of this rhetoric stems from misinformation. The post The real-life impact of delaying gender-affirming care appeared first on News Is Out.0 Comments 0 Shares 28 Views 0 Reviews

NEWSISOUT.COMPalm Springs remains a haven for LGBTQ+ visitorsFor the uninitiated, Palm Springs, California is the gayest city in the country, and maybe even the world. At least a third of the citys population of 45,000 identifies as gay or lesbian. The desert city is about a two-hour drive from Los Angeles in good traffic and a little over an hours flight from San Francisco. The city has long been a getaway for Hollywood elites as well as the LGBTQ+ community. For vacationers, Palm Springs boasts the most gay resorts of any place on the planet, with 11 in the city limits and one in the adjacent city to the south, Cathedral City.By the way, most of the gay nightlife used to be in Cathedral City, but starting in the 1990s, bars and nightclubs started springing up in Palm Springs. The first was Streetbar on E. Arenas Road in downtown Palm Springs, just east of Indian Canyon Drive. That block is now where the biggest concentration of gay businesses and nightclubs is situated. This years Palm Springs Pride is set for November 6-9. It includes a parade, festival, and other events, such as a block party.ResortsThe pool at the Santiago Resort in Palm Springs offers relaxation and fun for gay men. Photo: Courtesy Santiago ResortThe fabulously gay Santiago Resort is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The two-story, hacienda-style property has one of the largest pools and offers one of the most picturesque mountain views of any of the gay resorts. Like its sister properties, Twin Palms and Descanso resorts, Santiago offers a free breakfast, lunch, coffee, soft drinks, and snacks 24 hours a day. Santiago has a loyal following that keeps it busy even in the slower summer months. The biggest cluster of gay resorts is in the Warm Sands neighborhood, just under a mile from the Arenas Road gay strip. That is where you will find El Mirasol Villas, Casa Oliver, Hacienda Palm Springs, Desert Paradise Resort, and InnDulge. El Mirasol Villas is the most affordable, and Hacienda is the most luxurious, but all the resorts are first-rate.Casa Oliver is the newest gay hotel, opening in December 2024 in the space where All Worlds Annex used to be. The husband-and-wife owners are already putting a number of upgrades into the property, with newly remodeled rooms and plans for a restaurant on the property. It is one of three of Greater Palm Springs resorts that is open for day passes, starting at $25.Another gay resort offering day passes is Canyon Club Hotel on Palm Canyon Drive, on the north end of downtown. Canyon Club passes are just $15. Canyon Club is the most affordable of all the resorts, with rates that start at $119 with no resort fee. Cathedral City Boys Club (CCBC), that citys only gay resort, offers day passes for $35, with a Wednesday special of $22.The fabulous Triangle Inn in Palm Springs is owned by Michael Green and Stephen Boyd. The couple is well known for their work in the community and for their help to other LGBTQ+ businesses. Green is the president of the Palm Springs Cultural Association. The property is an architectural gem. It gets its name from the triangle-shaped front of the hotel as well as the LGBTQ+ pink triangle symbol. The front of the hotel is framed by a gorgeous garden. The aforementioned CCBC is the largest of the gay resorts, spread out on 3.5 acres. It includes the Runway Bar and Restaurant that is open to guests and non-guests alike. The resort hosts a number of special events that draw locals and tourists.Sadly, there are no longer any lesbian resorts since Casitas Laquita and Desert Hearts Inn closed years ago. All of the dozen gay resorts are male, clothing optional, and most serve a free continental breakfast. Some charge a resort fee but others dont, so if you are budget conscious and who isnt take that fee into consideration when comparing prices. Rates in general are cheapest over the summer and most expensive from mid-February through early May.NightlifeHunters Palm Springs. Photo: Hunters FacebookOn the E. The Evening Citizen bar is purposely a little hard to find and is behind Streetbar. (That is because it is an old-fashioned speakeasy bar.)There are no longer any lesbian bars since Delilahs went out of business years ago, but Hunters, and, on the north end of Palm Springs, Toucans Tiki Lounge, are very women-friendly. The Dinah, which promotes itself as the worlds largest lesbian and queer womens event and music festival, runs this year from September 24-29.While lesbians may not have a dedicated bar, theres a thriving community of queer women in Palm Springs hosting events, lesbian nights, and activities in the city. For more information, go to lesbianpalmsprings.com. The Tool Shed is on the edge of the Warm Sands neighborhood and is famous for its Thursday underwear night. And since Barracks in Cathedral City was shut down last year, it also is taking up the mantle with a Wednesday underwear night like Barracks used to have.Besides CCBCs Runway Bar, Cathedral City is home to One Eleven Bar and the Roost Lounge. Both bars are known for karaoke and live entertainment, and draw a higher percentage of locals than the Palm Springs bars.SightsDrag and Fly Tours has become a popular attraction since launching last November. Photo: Ed WalshOne of the newest attractions in Palm Springs began last November and is already among the hottest tickets in town. Drag and Fly Tours are as entertaining as they are informative. The 90-minute tour is conducted in a bus with 13-seat stadium seating, so everyone has the same good view. The tour is hosted by a drag queen and includes archival videos of some of the attractions that you will see along the way. It makes a quick pit stop on E. Arenas Road, where you will hear more about the citys gayest block.A must-see attraction is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. It takes visitors through four seasons in 10 minutes. If you are visiting in the summer, it could be 120 degrees in Palm Springs but a comfortable 80 degrees at the summit. At the top, you can have a meal, hike, and watch a very informative video on construction of this engineering marvel. If you are visiting in the winter, you can bring, or rent, a sled or cross-country skis.Palm Springs closes its main drag, Palm Canyon Drive, in the heart of downtown, every Thursday night for the street fair known as Village Fest. It runs from 7 to 10 p.m. June-September and from 6 to 10 p.m. the rest of the year. By the way, Palm Springs has two sunsets. The first sunset is when the sun goes behind the mountains to the west, putting the city in shade. Then about an hour later is when the sun officially sets. So, the Village Fest is shaded for at least an hour before sunset. The Palm Springs Art Museum is free on Thursday nights from 5 to 8 p.m., so you can easily coordinate a trip to the museum with Village Fest. The museums focus is contemporary art and design. It currently has an exhibit on the first floor showcasing works by LGBTQ+ artists from the museums photography, painting, and design collections. The post Palm Springs remains a haven for LGBTQ+ visitors appeared first on News Is Out.0 Comments 0 Shares 27 Views 0 Reviews

"At least Paige is winning off the court," said a comment with more than 125,000 likes.Oh this confirms everything thanks queen, one person wrote.Someone else joked, Historians will say they were just best friends."Another person commented, Am I crazy or is this a hard launch? The viral TikTok has also inspired videos of people celebrating the news or commenting it.@wbbupdatesandedits4uwar is over #paigebueckers #azzifudd #hardlaunch #wlw #kkarnold #goodtimes #celebrate #wnba #dallaswings #uconnwbb #womensbasketball #uconnhuskies #uconn #wbb #fyp #makemefamous #xyzbca #bleedblue #huskynation #viralvideoNeither woman has come out as LGBTQ+ publicly, but that hasnt stopped the persistent rumors. NEWSISOUT.COMYour LGBTQ+ travel guide to Breck Pride in ColoradoOh, how I love to get high in Colorado. And yes, Im referring to both legal marijuana gummies and the soaring altitude of its walkable mountain towns.Last June, I was invited to the quaint historic village of Breckenridge with a group of gay journalists to experience Breck Pride also briefly known as 10 Mile Pride and it was a pure delight. From the novelty of snow-capped peaks in summer (and actual snowfall, however minimal) to the breathtaking scenery, its difficult to imagine a more picturesque backdrop for a queer celebration. In my decades covering Pride events as a travel writer, Ive been a spectator at the biggest of the big, including World Pride in New York City. Ive also marched, ridden, and floated in more modest-by-comparison observances in Puerto Vallarta, Miami Beach and the Pride Boat Parade in Norfolk, Va.Honestly, Ive lost count of how many different Pride festivals Ive attended over the years, and it never gets old seeing how other towns, states, and countries approach the celebration differently. But of all the Prides Ive been a part of, I can state with certainty that Ive never been to one smaller than Breck Pride and that only made it more magical.A drag artist performs at Breck Pride. Photo: Steven LindseyFrom the moment we arrived in Breckenridge and stepped off the 90-minute shuttle from the Denver airport, rainbow flags greeted us at every turn throughout the town. They were hung in storefront windows light poles and were also waving in the breeze on banners spanning the main street through town.I visit many small towns with a bit of caution, as residents tend to be more conservative., But we couldnt have felt more welcome or loved in Breckenridge. In a town of only about 5,000 people, the estimated 1,000 people who attended the Community Gathering on Saturday represents a significant statistic. The event took place in the heart of town on the Riverwalk Center Lawn. It featured local drag queens, big-name drag headliners Jade Jolie as Taylor Swift and Coco Montrese as Janet Jackson live music, food and beverage vendors, acrobats, nonprofit organization booths, and celebrants of all ages.Because of the relatively small size compared to others, like my hometowns Dallas Pride which normally draws around 60,000, it felt pure in its intentions, almost grassroots if you will. And thats what I remember the most. Surrounded by spectacular natural beauty, I felt more part of a community than I ever had at larger Prides. This year, Breck Pride returns from June 9-15, featuring a full schedule of events throughout the town. Among the gatherings to check out: Pride Trivia Night, a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Gay Pop Icon Karaoke, a Fireside Chat with LGBTQ+ panelists, Pride Yoga, Drag Queen Bingo, and Pride Climbing. The main event, the Community Gathering, returns to the town center with headliner JORDY, the stage name of Jewish queer pop artist Jordan Shulman.Another perk of attending Breck Pride is building a fun weekend around the major Pride events. Read on for personal recommendations of accommodations, restaurants, and activities to make the most of your time in this mountain paradise. With lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s, dont forget to pack a jacket and gloves!Where to StayGravity HausLocated in the heart of town, this contemporary boutique riverside hotel features only 60 rooms, but its bursting with ski-town-inspired decor throughout its public and private spaces with wonderfully comfortable rooms with great views of the town and its surroundings. The property also boasts multiple hot tubs, a cold plunge, a sauna, and a well-equipped gym with fitness classes. Its also steps from the base of Peak 9 ski slopes if you come in winter, and a short walk to breathtaking hiking trails in warmer months.Bunk House LodgeFor more than 50 years, Bunk House Lodge has been a cozy retreat for the LGBTQ+ community and allies, but predominantly gay men. Its designed to be a place for fellow like-minded travelers to meet and will appeal to less fussy travelers, but the lodge attracts a high number of repeat guests. Please note that the property is considerably more rustic than a traditional hotel and is located approximately 3.5 miles from the town center. Accommodations include both private rooms (some of which are accessed by ladders) and a bunk room that accommodates up to five individuals. All options share bathrooms and amenities include a complimentary continental breakfast spread, hot tub access, and an outdoor fireplace. Its currently under consideration for inclusion on the Colorado and National Registers of Historic Places.Photo: Louie TraubWhat to DoVisit the Breckenridge TrollStrap on your hiking boots or walking shoes and venture into the woods on the Trollstigen Trail to hang out with the cutest 15-foot wooden troll youll likely ever encounter. Unlike his internet counterparts, Isak Heartstone (yes, he has a name) spreads nothing but good vibes and even better photo ops. While youre in the hiking spirit, hit up one of the longer trails, which take you by rivers, old mines, and scenic overlooks.Create a masterpiece with recycled plasticSign up for a class at Breck Create and design jewelry, pins, or your own unique work of art entirely made out of heat-pressed recycled plastic, available in a near-infinite number of rainbow hues.Relax, reflect, and recharge Book a session at Clairvergence Wellness Center and experience your choice of healing and inspirational activities, including Reiki, tarot card readings, soundbaths, yoga, and craniosacral therapy. Its an ideal way to end your time in Breckenridge on a calm, peaceful note.Get ready for lift-offPack a picnic lunch from Semplice Cafe (the vegan chickpea wrap is delicious!), then hop on a chair lift for a scenic gondola ride to Peak 8s Epic Discovery area, followed by a chair lift where hiking and biking trails, coasters, alpine slides, climbing walls, and mini golf await.Go for a rideSchedule a tour with Ridden Breckenridge and explore the town and surrounding terrain by bicycle (available even during the winter) with options that highlight the regions history along with stops at Broken Compass Brewery and Breckenridge Distillery.Where to Eat & DrinkFor a small town, Breckendrige has an abundance of incredible places to eat and drink. For breakfast, try Blue Moose for their famous Benedicts and cinnamon buns. Chow down on incredible Italian fare at Tin Plate Artisan Pizza . Enjoy cocktails at Cabin Juice or RMU, a bike and ski shop that doubles as a bar. And enjoy fine dining with casual vibes at both Radicato from James Beard-nominated chef Matt Vawter, as well as The Carlin, specializing in Pacific Northwest fare. Of course, any time of day is a good time to stop at Mimi & Pin for churros and waffles. The post Your LGBTQ+ travel guide to Breck Pride in Colorado appeared first on News Is Out.0 Comments 0 Shares 26 Views 0 Reviews
