Patriotic education: Trump Orders Federal Push to Monitor K-12 Curriculum
By Orion RummlerThis story was originally published by the 19th, a nonprofit news network. President Trump's latest executive order directing the federal government to monitor K-12 education curriculum targets transgender students and those who support them in schools. (Allison Bailey/NurPhoto via AP)Subscribe nowPresident Donald Trump has directed the federal government to begin a campaign to monitor and influence K-12 curriculum a move that former Education Department staff describe as unprecedented interference into the countrys education system with the purpose of targeting marginalized groups, particularly transgender students. In an executive order signed Wednesday, Trump instructed the secretary of education, secretary of defense and secretary of health and human services to work with the attorney general to enforce patriotic education and eliminate federal funding for schools promoting indoctrination based on gender ideology and discriminatory equity ideology. These and other terms used in the order echo attempts by Republicans in red states to restrict teaching critical race theory, Black history, intersectionality and social justice, and to ban classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity. For example, discriminatory equity ideology is defined within the order as, among other things, the belief that the United States is fundamentally racist, sexist, or otherwise discriminatory.Borrowing language from a recent executive order that signals the Trump administrations opposition to transgender identity as a whole, this new order seeks to bar teachers from supporting trans students by using that students name and pronouns or allowing these students to use restrooms that match with their gender identity. Teachers have been under this kind of political pressure for years, as states like Florida and Kentucky enact policies banning LGBTQ content in schools and restrict how teachers can interact with trans students.Catherine Lhamon, an assistant secretary for the Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Education under former President Joe Biden, said that complying with this order is ultimately impossible for federal agencies, in part because the order lacks clarity and clashes with other orders signed by Trump. She also believes it is illegal. The executive order effectively directs curricular instruction and it is, in multiple statutes, against the law for the United States Department of Education to direct curriculum, which is locally controlled, Lhamon said. The Department of Education Organization Act, the federal law passed by Congress in 1979 that first established the agency, makes that clear. By directing what school staff can and cannot say in a public school, the order also seems to contradict an earlier order signed by Trump guaranteeing respect for free speech under the First Amendment, she said.President Trump campaigned on returning power over students education to the states, even going so far as promising to shut down the Department of Education entirely. But this executive order explicitly uses federal funding to determine what can be taught in schools while labeling certain concepts as divisive, said Katy Joseph, formerly chief of staff for the Education Departments Office for Civil Rights. The executive order gives federal agencies 90 days to create a plan to discover and restrict all federal funding sources that directly or indirectly support or subsidize the instruction, advancement, or promotion of gender ideology or discriminatory equity ideology in K-12 curriculums and teacher certification. Those agencies also have 90 days to figure out how to restrict funds from being used at schools to support transgender students social transition including through school staff not alerting parents that their students are transgender. The order also gave the secretary of education, who has yet to be confirmed by the Senate, 120 days to reestablish the 1776 Commission, an advisory group created during the first Trump to promote a specific version of patriotism in school curricula.Rachel Laser, president and CEO of the religious freedom advocacy organization Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said in a statement that bringing back the commission would advance narrow Christian nationalist beliefs about gender and a white-washed American history. It would also blur the lines between church and state, which, she said, stands in direct opposition to the nations founding principles.Nicholas Hite, a senior attorney for Lambda Legal, a civil rights organization focused on the LGBTQ community, called the executive order patently unconstitutional nonsense. In a statement, he said it isdesigned to demean and deny the very existence of transgender and other queer youth.Hite continued: Bans on using the correct restrooms threaten the safety and health of transgender and nonbinary youth. Denying the opportunity to participate in school sports programs with their classmates deprives them of the many opportunities and developmental benefits all agree come from joining in team sports. And compelling teachers to tell parents about a students in-school request that a chosen name or pronoun be used contrary to the students wishes can expose the student to violence in the home.To Joseph, Trumps blitz of executive orders in the first days of his presidency are part of a clear strategy: to demonize certain marginalized groups and distract people from the larger picture of his administrations broader agenda to undermine democracy.Trans youth and trans folks more broadly are very high on that list, as well as immigrants, students who are here are on student visas, and now educators are being pulled into that as well, she said. This new executive order targets practices that support transgender youth while broadly undermining the ability for all young people to learn critical thinking skills and accurate history, Joseph said. Until this point, the federal government had not had any role in curriculum development; the task had always been a local process, with limited oversight from the federal agency to investigate potentially hostile learning environments, she said.Subscribe nowIn addition to Lambda Legal, the Human Rights Campaign, Advocates for Trans Equality and other LGBTQ advocacy groups condemned Trumps executive order on Wednesday, during a week where the administration made several attempts to roll back LGBTQ rights at the federal level. Our team of lawyers and policy analysts will be scrutinizing the executive order closely in the coming days for its impact on our community, and we stand ready to use every resource at our disposal, from Capitol Hill to the courts, to defend the rights of all students, parents, and teachers who deserve to feel safe and welcome at school, said Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE) executive director, in a statement.Several lawsuits against the Trump administration have already been taken up in response to executive orders that restrict LGBTQ rights. GLAD Law and the National Center for Lesbian Rights are challenging Trumps executive order barring transgender people from the military. An incarcerated trans woman has filed a lawsuit against Trumps broad executive order mandating that the federal government only recognize two sexes an order that would require housing trans people in federal prisons based on their sex assigned at birth. All young people including LGBTQ students and the children of LGBTQ parents, who are accepted by the adults in their life have much better outcomes for mental health and other metrics, Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said in a statement. We owe it to them to ensure that they feel safe, respected and ready to learn when theyre at school.Nadra Nittle contributed reporting. If objective, nonpartisan, rigorous, LGBTQ-focused journalism is important to you, please consider making a tax-deductible donation through our fiscal sponsor, Resource Impact, by clicking this button:Donate to Uncloseted Media

Human Rights Campaign announces major restructure as LGBTQ+ organization faces new political reality
The Human Rights Campaign is set to lay off approximately 20 percent of its workforce in a major restructuring effort in what the group's leadership said is to adapt to the evolving political and financial landscape, The Advocate has exclusively learned.According to a senior HRC official knowledgeable about the decision-making process, the layoffs, which will take effect on February 12, will impact about 50 employees. By the start of its next fiscal year on April 1, HRC expects to have around 180 staff members. Another senior official said that the decision reflects a need to operate differently in response to external political and legislative threats to the LGBTQ+ community and internal budget realities.HRC views current programming as unsustainableIn recent years, HRC has experienced significant fundraising success, with revenues exceeding expectations, the group said. In fiscal year 2023, a representative said, the organization budgeted to raise $63 million but ultimately brought in $85 million. Since 2017, the person added that HRC has exceeded its fundraising goals. However, the decision to reinvest those surpluses into expanded programming and operating costs has created a financial model that leadership now sees as unsustainable.According to available financial reports and IRS form 990s, which The Advocate reviewed, HRCs total revenue in fiscal year 2024 was approximately $75 million, a decrease from the previous years $85 million. The organizations total expenses for the year stood at nearly $89 million, exceeding its revenue and contributing to a net asset decline of over $12 million. As of March 31, 2024, the organizations net assets totaled $45.7 million, down from $58 million in 2023. HRCs combined revenue between its main organization and foundation remains over $70 million, according to the official, but leadership determined that current spending levels could not be maintained without restructuring. The organizations board has directed its president Kelley Robinson, who has led the organization since 2022, to ensure a balanced budget in response to the shifting financial and political landscape. The board has charged Kelly with ensuring a balanced budget in the face of a new environment that requires a reset as we ready ourselves for the challenges ahead, an official explained. They added, To avoid layoffs, we explored a range of cost-saving measures, from attrition to aggressively pushing revenue and evaluating program expenses, but ultimately, both strategic and budget reasons led us to this restructuring. While the decision is not tied to one factor, HRC officials acknowledged the increasingly hostile political climate as one reason for the shift. Given the threats ahead of us, any LGBTQ organization or progressive organization thats not seriously evaluating their strategies and structures is missing the reality of the threats in front of us, one official said, citing the weaponization of state and federal governments against LGBTQ+ rights, as well as institutions making decisions out of fear that could impact HRCs work.In an interview with The Advocate, Robinson acknowledged the gravity of letting employees go but emphasized that HRCs mission remains unwavering. Our success has never been determined by the number of staff we have but by the impact that we make in the world, she said. We need to stay laser-focused on how we can create change. Were sharpening our focus...," says Kelly RobinsonThe restructuring will allow HRC to focus on areas where it believes it can have the most significant impact: schools, workplaces, policies, and politics. Were sharpening our focus on where we can make the most impact, Robinson said. This is about ensuring that we are agile and strategic in this moment.Robinson dismissed concerns that the layoffs could weaken HRCs influence. If its our opposition asking that question, I think they do that at their own peril, she said. The best thing about being a queer person is that we have a history and a legacy of confronting impossible challenges and coming out the other side.Despite the growing conservative backlash against diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, Robinson said HRC is committed to continuing to engage corporations. Recently, companies like Walmart, McDonalds, Tractor Supply Co., and others have announced they will no longer report corporate information about their workplace culture to HRC. However, Robinson highlighted that HRCs Corporate Equality Index saw participation from over 1,400 businesses last year. We just had our Corporate Equality 100 awards in New York, where 600 corporate partners came together to celebrate getting a perfect score, she said. Theres still so much allyship and work to be done.HRC officials said schools and workplaces will be a primary area of emphasis, ensuring LGBTQ+ people have protections and resources in their daily lives. Policy and politics will also remain central, focusing on defending against harmful legislation while advancing state and federal protections. Additionally, HRC says it is committed to reshaping the national conversation around LGBTQ+ issues by countering anti-LGBTQ+ disinformation and amplifying voices that represent the realities of the community. Were not just responding to threatswere transforming them into opportunities for lasting impact, a senior official said. This reset is really about strengthening our ability to win on these critical fights and keep our focus where we have the ability to make the most impact.HRC has been a unionized workplace for over 25 years, with employees represented by the Service Employees International Union. The organization notified the union about the impending layoffs and will engage in discussions before finalizing the details.Weve been a proud union shop, and we are providing this time for meaningful discussion with the union, which is a regular part of our process, an official said.HRC held an all-staff meeting Tuesday morning to notify employees of the change. When asked about severance and transition assistance for affected employees, Robinson acknowledged the difficulty of the decision. This is the hardest part, Robinson said. We have some of the most dedicated and tenacious staff Ive had the opportunity to work with. She emphasized that HRC is working closely with its union to ensure that affected employees are treated with dignity and respect. We are in active conversations with our union to make sure that we are honoring those discussions, she said.Representatives for SEIU did not respond to The Advocates request for comment.Despite the staffing reduction, HRC insists that its core mission remains unchanged. We arent going anywhere, a senior official said. This is about responsible leadership and positioning ourselves to be in a place of strength for our peoplenot just today, but in the years ahead.HRC also affirmed that its major events, such as the National Dinner and regional fundraising galas, will continue. Convening community is critical toward building power and strength, the official said, adding that while there may be some shifts in programming, supporters should not expect a dimming of the lights. What comes next for the Human Rights Campaign in this new political reality?HRC leadership said the organization also plans to rethink how it communicates about LGBTQ+ issues, particularly in the face of mounting disinformation. We need to make sure that the American people understand that trans people arent a thought exercisethat we are in every zip code, every family, every race and region, and we are not going anywhere, the official said. But we also need to be strategic about how we amplify these voices in a way that shifts the national conversation.HRC is developing new storytelling initiatives to highlight the real-life impacts of anti-LGBTQ+ policies. The effort will include media training for advocates and elevating voices like Emily Shilling, a U.S. Navy commander who has spoken out against anti-trans military bans, and Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, who has provided moral clarity on LGBTQ+ rightsmost notably when she confronted President Donald Trump about his anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-immigrant policies at the National Prayer Service following his January 20 inauguration. As the LGBTQ+ community faces unprecedented political attacks, HRC says this restructuring is designed to ensure the organization remains a powerful and effective advocate for years to come.Robinson, who is pregnant and expecting in the spring, also addressed her upcoming maternity leave, assuring that she has a strong leadership team in place to maintain the organizations momentum. A movement is bigger than any single person, she said. I am proud to have a great chief of staff, a great chief operating officer, and an incredible team here at the Human Rights Campaign that, even while Im on maternity leave, will be helping to move things forward.

LGBTQ+ comic Amber Ruffin to headline White House Correspondents Dinner. But, will Trump attend?
The White House Correspondents Association has announced that queer comedian, writer, and television host Amber Ruffin will be the featured entertainer at its annual dinner on April 26 in Washington, D.C.When I began to think about what entertainer would be a perfect fit for the dinner this year, Amber was immediately at the top of my list, WHCA president Eugene Daniels, an out gay White House correspondent for Politico, said in a statement. She has the ability to walk the line between blistering commentary and humor all while provoking her audience to think about the important issues of the day. Im thrilled and honored she said yes.Ruffin, an Emmy- and Tony-nominated writer, is best known for her work as a writer and performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers and as the host of The Amber Ruffin Show. She co-hosts CNNs Have I Got News For You alongside Roy Wood Jr. and Michael Ian Black. Ruffing came out as queer on the last day of Pride Month last June.Ambers unique talents are the ideal fit for this current political and cultural climate, Daniels added. Her perspective will fit right in with the dinners tradition of honoring the freedom of the press while roasting the most powerful people on all sides of the aisle and the journalists who cover them. The annual dinner, which serves as a fundraiser for journalism scholarships, has long been attended by sitting presidents. However, President Donald Trump did not participate in the event during his first term, breaking with a tradition that dates back decades. With Trump now back in the White House, questions remain about whether he will appear at this years dinner, particularly given the administrations expanded posture on press access. In 2016, while Trump was in the audience, President Barack Obama told several jokes at Trumps expense, which he did not appear to find funny. The Advocate has contacted White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt to inquire whether he plans to attend. The WHCA has not yet confirmed the attendance of the president or other administration officials.

The Proud Boys attacked a Black church and found out their actions have dire consequences
The Proud Boys lost big this week when a judge ruled that the group can no longer use its own name and instead awarded the moniker to a Washington DC-based Black church that was subjected to a hateful and overtly racist attack by the white supremacists. On Monday, the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal church where Fredrick Douglass, Oprah Winfrey, and former President Barack Obama have all worshipped was awarded power over the Proud Boys name by DC superior court judge Tanya Jones Bosier, who opened the door for the church to seize any profit made from the sale of merchandise sales using the far-right extremist groups name, logos, and insignia, The Guardian reports. The Proud Boys were initially ordered to pay the church $2.8 million in 2023 after several members scaled a wall and vandalized the church, including burning a Black Lives Matter banner during a December 2020 rally put on by people who falsely claimed that the election was stolen from Donald Trump after he lost to Joe Biden.Proud Boys leader Henry Enrique Tarrio and fellow members John Turano, Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs, and Jeremy Bertino lost the civil suit after DC superior court judge Neal Kravitz said that when they attacked the church, they had acted with an evil, discriminatory motive based on race and that their conduct was reprehensible to an extreme degree. Tarrio was also one of the planners of the January 6 insurrection at the Capital and was sentenced to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy, but was recently pardoned and released from prison by Trump. Although he was one of the main organizers of the Capital riot, he was not part of the insurrection and instead helped to plan it from a hotel room in Baltimore. He had already been arrested for stealing a BLM flag when the Proud Boys attacked the Ashbury Methodist church, part of a series of crimes that saw the white supremacist group target four churches in a single night. To satisfy the more than $2 million judgment, which the Proud Boys have yet to pay, the group will have to seek permission from the church in order to use its own name or logos (including their recognizable yellow laurel leaf design) for any revenue-creating venture. In the lawsuit, lawyers for the church say the Proud Boys have engaged in fraudulent activity to prevent the church from collecting the judgment, which includes terminating the Proud Boys entity and surrendering its trademark registration.Tarrio has not remained quiet after being pardoned, instead, he has called for the church to have its nonprofit status revoked and the impeachment of Bosier, who was appointed by Biden.Their actions are a betrayal of justice, Tarrio said of Bosier and Kravitz, the two judges involved in the case.I hold in contempt any motions, judgments and orders issued against me.

She began helping out with personal tasks and childcare, eventually becoming a nanny to their son. However, she alleges Gaiman sexually assaulted her repeatedly while she was in their employ, but that she felt unable to leave as she had previously been homeless and broke.Pavlovich has further claimed that she told Palmer about the assaults, and that Palmer subsequently informed her that multiple women had told her similar things about Gaiman in the past."Palmer was sufficiently aware that Gaiman was likely to target Scarlett, that she warned Gaiman to stay away from Scarlett before she brought Scarlett to Gaimans house as a babysitter," the lawsuit reads. "Yet Palmer never warned Scarlett of the known danger posed by Gaiman."Public opinion has shifted drastically against Gaiman as more and more accusations have come to light. He has also incurred professional consequences, with adaptations and reprints of his work either being canceled or put on pause. In January, he finally responded to the many allegations in a blog post on his website, claiming he had previously stayed silent "out of a desire not to draw even more attention to a lot of misinformation.""There are moments I half-recognise and moments I dont, descriptions of things that happened sitting beside things that emphatically did not happen," he wrote. "Im far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever."A representative for Palmer previously stated that she is "profoundly disturbed by the allegations that Mr. Gaiman has abused several women," but she has otherwise asked for privacy, citing "ongoing custody and divorce proceedings."

Here's how Trump's tariffs will impact you if he gets his way
Like designer knock-offs, tariffs may look like they mean business, but how quickly do they fall apart at the seams. With President-elect Donald Trump preparing for his presidency, he promised to slap tariffs on goods from the leading U.S. trade partners on day one. This would range from 10% on goods from China to 25% from Canada and Mexico. Trump has touted this move as a way to negotiate with these countries over several policies, mainly cracking down on drug production and illegal migrants entering the country, as well as protecting domestic jobs and industries. What Are Tariffs?"Tariffs are often touted as a protective measure for domestic industries," explains David Fritch, a registered investment advisor and CPA with over four decades of experience. "But the reality is that ramping up local production capacity can take considerable time." Even when goods are not wholly made externally, tariffs also increase the cost of resources for businesses, both big and small. While Trump guarantees that tariffs will be paid by the companies exporting their goods, that's not the case. Ultimately, it's the company and consumers importing goods; tariffs cause businesses to "reassess their supply chain strategies," Fritch says, "and even forcing some to pass costs onto consumers."So, which items will immediately face tariffs, and which could be vulnerable to potential tariffs should Trump launch a global trade war?Electronics: From Playstations to iPhonesIt's no secret that our gadgets are global jet-setters before they even hit the shelves. PlayStations are born from the minds of Sony in Japan, though they are assembled partly in China. And that shiny iPhone in your hand? It's as American as apple pieif it came from a bakery in Shenzen, China. With China being targeted, your next binge-worthy gaming console or phone upgrade might have a higher price tag.Fashion and Flair: Clothing and WigsFor those on a shopping budget or jumping into the latest aesthetic trend, the Chinese fast-fashion mogul Shein is about to stretch your wallet. And like elastic waistbands, expect a price increase from other clothing manufacturers based in China. And let's remember that many wig producers and suppliers are Chinese-based, so expect a 10% premium on your next hair transformation moment.Fortunately, a pair of Louboutins are safe from any proposed tariffs, as those red soles are safely made in France. But should President Trump choose to launch a trade war with the European Union, expect these to be on the chopping block. The Vanity Set: Makeup, Perfume, and FillersOur beauty essentials are also coming under attack. Brands like MAC Cosmetics, NARS, and Urban Decay make some or all of their products in Canada. In contrast, other brands like L'Oral are sourced from several countries, including Mexico. Fortunately, the cult-favorite Baccarat Rouge 540 and Juvderm are safely made in France and Ireland, respectively, so we will not foresee any price hikes due to tariffsWhether wholly imported or sourcing foreign-made materials, you may expect a higher price when it comes to cosmetics and perfumes. But let's face it, glowing skin is non-negotiable.Booze and Beans: Imported Liquor & CoffeeWhen you're sipping on Espolon, Patron, Don Julio, and Jose Cuervo, expect to pay an extra few bucks at your favorite bar. But suppose you choose a shot of Jameson or a sidecar of Hennessy. In that case, these libations are currently safe from tariff woes. And what about coffee? Rest assured, that morning cup will not increaseat least for now. Though Mexico's coffee exports to the U.S. pail compared to other Latin American and African countries, Trump could effectively impose tariffs on coffee-exporting countries to halt illegal migrants or drugs from entering the country.Trade Wars: Who Will Hurt The Most?Donald Trump's proposal is already sparking a range of responses, from concerns and threats of retaliation from the leaders of the U.S.'s three largest trade partners.I'm still eyeing my shopping cart like a financial advisor reading over my monthly expenses. Who would be caught in this international game of cat and mouse? We will. Consumers will undoubtedly fork out higher prices for our goods, be it furniture, electronics, clothing, or our favorite makeup or wig brands.Tech upgrades, closet staples, and the occasional indulgence may take a backseat these next few years until the Trump administration reverses its tariff policy. In the meantime, I'll patiently await the holiday sales.Marie-Adlina de la Ferrire is the Community Editor at equalpride, publisher of PRIDE.com.Voices is dedicated to featuring a wide range of inspiring personal stories and impactful opinions from the LGBTQ+ and Allied community. Sarah Michelle Gellar starring in a 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' sequel series has fans divided
After more than two decades spent rewatching cult hit Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the die-hard fans have reason to rejoice as the beloved series may be finally getting brand new episodes!A sequel to the iconic show is currently in the works and nearing a pilot order at Hulu with star Sarah Michelle Gellar attached, Variety reports. While all fans of the cult classic show are likely waiting with bated breath for every new kernel of information that comes along, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has always been especially beloved by Sapphics who loved the series queer-coded moments like every moment Buffy and Faith were on screen and the lesbian love story between Willow and Tara. (@) Gellar, who played the titular slayer Buffy Summers, is expected to reprise her signature role in what is being described as the next chapter in the Buffyverse despite spending years opposed to the idea of revisiting the series that helped to skyrocket her to fame. It wasnt until she starred in the Dexter prequel series Original Sin that she started to reconsider. Its funny, I always used to say no, because its in its bubble and its so perfect, she said, according to Deadline. But watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, Well, maybe.Despite some fans being excited about the possibility of watching Gellar slay vampires again, others feel like the legacy sequel series is just a cash grab that will never have the cultural impact of the original. (@) (@) Its unclear if any of the other original cast members will return, but self-professed lifelong Buffy fan Chlo Zhao is set to direct with many of the original executive producers returning. Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, and Kaz Kuzui will all be back and working alongside none other than country music icon Dolly Parton. Original series creator Joss Whedon, who faced misconduct allegations by nearly a dozen people who worked on the show, is not part of the creative team on the proposed sequel series.

Social Security Administration Halts Changes to Sex Markers, Following Trump Executive Order
The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced on Friday, January 31, that it will no longer accept requests to change sex markers in its records, an unexpected shift that has sparked concern and outrage within the LGBTQ+ community. The new policy, communicated internally through an emergency memo, will only recognize the traditional male (M) and female (F) markers in the SSAs Numerical Identification System (NUMIDENT), a computer database that tracks personal information, including a persons full name, date of birth, gender, and Social Security Number (SSN).According to Chris Geidner, a legal expert at the website Law Dork, the memo explicitly directs SSA staff to refuse any changes from M to F or vice versa, signaling a direct response to a sweeping executive order issued by former President Donald Trump. The order, titled Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government, mandates that the federal government only recognize two sexesmale and femalebased on reproductive biology at conception. The memo, which was sent out by the SSAs Office of Retirement and Disability Policy, raises additional concerns, particularly for individuals with gender markers labeled as X, which is used for nonbinary or gender-nonconforming people. The SSA memo does not specify how the agency will handle these individuals, leaving a significant gap in the policy that LGBTQ+ advocates say could further marginalize vulnerable communities.LGBTQ+ Advocates Criticize Policy ChangeLGBTQ+ advocates have harshly criticized the new directive, arguing that it further alienates already marginalized groups, especially transgender and nonbinary individuals. The Trump administration is obsessed with controlling every aspect of peoples lives, including their gender identity, said one advocate, noting that the SSAs move comes as part of a larger pattern of policies aimed at limiting gender expression and recognition. The policy change is in direct response to Trumps executive order, which insists that the federal government only acknowledge two sexesmale and femalebased on the biological characteristics assigned at birth. The order has been widely seen as an effort to impose a rigid, binary understanding of sex and gender across all federal agencies.Shortly before the SSA issued its directive, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) sent a similar memo to all federal agencies, ordering them to comply with Trumps executive order by January 31. The timing of the SSAs announcement coincided with the OPM deadline, signaling that the shift is part of a broader government initiative to limit recognition of gender beyond male and female.Removal of Gender-Related Information from SSA WebsitesThe SSAs move to halt changes to sex markers is not an isolated incident. In the wake of Trumps executive orders, the agency has quietly removed a section from its website that previously provided guidance on how individuals could update their gender identification. This information, which had previously helped transgender individuals correct their gender markers in SSA records, was wiped from the site soon after Trump signed the order into effect.Fortunately, proactive internet users, anticipating such actions, archived the original content, preserving the lost information. LGBTQ+ advocates have expressed concern that these website changes are part of a broader effort to erase critical resources for transgender and nonbinary individuals, especially in the face of political opposition to gender-inclusive policies.Additionally, the SSA has removed mentions of sexual orientation and gender identity from its Civil Rights and Compliance page, another sign of the administrations ongoing efforts to curtail protections for LGBTQ+ people within federal agencies.Legal Challenges and Warnings from LawmakersDespite the implementation of these executive orders, many legal experts and government officials warn that these actions could violate federal law and constitutional protections. Executive orders are not automatically enforceable and often require further legal processes to take effect. Many of Trumps orders, including the one restricting gender identification changes, are currently being challenged in court for potential violations of civil rights and anti-discrimination laws.New York Attorney General Letitia James has been outspoken in her opposition to the executive order, writing a letter to NYU Langone Health urging the hospital to continue providing puberty blockers and other gender-affirming care to transgender youth. James warned that refusal to provide such treatments could violate New Yorks state anti-discrimination laws, which protect LGBTQ+ individuals from being denied medical care based on their gender identity.James intervention came after NYU Langone began turning away patients seeking gender-affirming care, citing concerns over the potential loss of federal funding as a result of Trumps order. This move has sparked wider concerns about the impact of the executive order on medical care for transgender individuals, particularly as it could lead to a chilling effect on healthcare providers across the country.Wider Implications for LGBTQ+ RightsThe SSAs decision to stop accepting sex marker changes and the ongoing implementation of Trumps executive orders have raised alarms across the LGBTQ+ community. Critics argue that the actions are part of a broader effort to roll back the rights and protections of LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly those who are transgender or nonbinary. In response to these changes, many LGBTQ+ organizations have vowed to continue fighting for the rights of gender-diverse individuals, including advocating for legal challenges to the executive orders and pushing for stronger protections at the state and federal levels. As these policies unfold, the LGBTQ+ community and its allies are bracing for further efforts to curtail gender inclusivity in federal systems. However, many are also preparing to challenge these policies in court, as the battle over LGBTQ+ rights continues to intensify in the wake of Trumps presidency. The full impact of these changes on transgender and nonbinary individuals remains to be seen, but advocates are determined to ensure that their voices are heard in the fight for equality and recognition. The post Social Security Administration Halts Changes to Sex Markers, Following Trump Executive Order appeared first on Gayety.

Netflix Pulls Back Support for Karla Sofa Gascn Amid Controversy, Oscar Campaign in Limbo
A new report reveals that Netflix is quietly distancing itself from Karla Sofa Gascn, the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for an acting Oscar, following a series of controversial social media posts. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gascns role in the film Emilia Prez had initially positioned her as a frontrunner for awards season, but recent controversies have led the streaming giant to halt its support for her involvement in the campaign.Gascn, who made history with her nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards, was set to attend a number of key awards events, including the AFI Awards luncheon, Critics Choice Awards, and the PGA Awards. However, reports indicate that Netflix has opted not to cover her travel, accommodation, or other associated costs for these events. Tensions reportedly escalated between the actress and the studio, leading to the removal of her name from promotional materials, such as email blasts and ad reads. Additionally, some events, including the Santa Barbara Film Festival, were said to be considering canceling their plans to feature Emilia Prez if Gascn did not withdraw from participation. From Oscar Glory to ControversyEmilia Prez received widespread critical acclaim upon its release and made history with a record 13 Oscar nominations. Gascns role as the titular character, Emilia Prez, cemented her place in LGBTQ+ history as the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an acting Oscar. However, her path to the Oscars has been marred by increasing scrutiny over past social media posts. In late January, Gascn sparked a wave of controversy when she accused Brazilian actress Fernanda Torreswho is also nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Im Still Hereof orchestrating a social media attack against her as a trans woman and against Emilia Prez as a film. However, these claims were quickly debunked. Social media responses came predominantly from independent film critics and Brazilian fans of Torres who supported her Oscar campaignnot from any coordinated effort as Gascn had suggested. The accusations were followed by the resurfacing of several old posts from Gascns social media accounts. These posts, dating back to the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s, included controversial opinions about various topics, including Islam, Muslims, George Floyd, and singer Adele. The discovery of these posts led to a wave of public backlash. Some of Gascns remarks were viewed as offensive, leading to further scrutiny of her character during the critical awards season.Gascn Responds and Netflix Takes a Step BackIn response to the uproar over her past social media activity, Gascn issued an apology through a press statement, acknowledging the harm caused by her earlier comments. I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt, she told Variety. As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life, I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness. In an effort to distance herself from the controversy, Gascn deactivated her social media accounts. Im sorry, but I can no longer allow this campaign of hate and misinformation to affect me and my family, so at their request I am closing my account on X, she told The Hollywood Reporter. She also spoke candidly about the threats and harassment she has received, adding, I have been threatened with death, insulted, abused and harassed to the point of exhaustion. I have a wonderful daughter to protect, whom I love madly and who supports me in everything.Despite the fallout, Gascns nomination remains intact, and she has made it clear that she does not intend to withdraw from the Oscar race. Speaking to CNN en Espaol, Gascn explained, I cannot renounce a nomination because what I have done is a job, and what is being valued is my acting work. I cannot renounce a nomination, either, because I have not committed any crime nor have I harmed anyone. I am not a racist nor am I anything that all these people have taken upon themselves to try to make others believe that I am.A Film in CrisisThe situation has raised significant questions about the intersection of celebrity, social media, and awards campaigning. While Emilia Prez had originally garnered attention for its historic Oscar nominations, Gascns public controversies have thrown a shadow over the films path to the Academy Awards. The film, which has received critical praise, now finds itself in a difficult position as it navigates the aftermath of the social media backlash. The report from The Hollywood Reporter also highlights the internal tensions between Gascn and Netflix as they navigate the fallout. The decision to remove Gascns name from promotional materials and halt her participation in key events underscores the complexities of balancing support for a groundbreaking nomination with the realities of public relations in the #MeToo and cancel culture era.As the Oscar race continues, all eyes will remain on the impact of these controversies on Gascns chances and the future of Emilia Prez. The unfolding situation serves as a stark reminder of the challenges celebrities and films face in the age of social media, where past actions can resurface to impact present-day careers. For Gascn, the battle is far from over. With her nomination still in place, she remains resolute in defending her body of work, despite the public scrutiny surrounding her personal history. The next few weeks will likely determine whether she can overcome the controversy or if her Oscar campaign will be overshadowed by the fallout from her past social media activity. The post Netflix Pulls Back Support for Karla Sofa Gascn Amid Controversy, Oscar Campaign in Limbo appeared first on Gayety.

Transportation Department Ends Diversity Celebrations Under New Leadership
The Department of Transportation (DOT) announced an immediate shift away from observances that celebrate diversity, effectively ending recognition of cultural and identity-based events such as Pride Month, Black History Month, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The directive, issued by former U.S. Representative Sean Duffy, who now leads the department, aligns with the broader agenda of the Trump administration to eliminate what it deems woke policies from federal agencies.Duffy, a former Wisconsin congressman and reality TV star known for his stint on The Real World: Boston, revealed the decision on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday. Effective immediately, the Department of Transportation will no longer participate in celebrations based on immutable traits or any other identity-based observances, Duffy wrote, asserting that these events were distractions that do little to advance the core mission of the department. From now on, everyday of every month we celebrate transportation, beautiful infrastructure, and safety, Duffy added, emphasizing a renewed focus on the departments primary responsibilities, including air traffic safety, train operations, and the security of U.S. ports and highways. The move marks a continuation of the Trump administrations push to roll back diversity initiatives in federal agencies. Earlier directives had already led to the elimination of cultural observances related to Juneteenth, Holocaust Remembrance Days, and other heritage celebrations. The recent decision by the DOT fits into the larger effort by Duffy and others in the Trump administration to dismantle what they view as excessive woke policies.A Pushback Against DEI Initiatives and Climate Change PoliciesDuffys action is part of a broader initiative aimed at reversing policies put in place during the Biden administration. In a memo titled Woke Rescission, Duffy instructed department staff to identify and eliminate any Biden-era policies, programs, or practices that promote what he termed wokeism. This included Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, racial equity programs, and gender identity policies, which Duffy described as partisan and disconnected from the departments goals. The memo also targeted climate-related policies, including initiatives addressing environmental justice. One such policy rollback includes rescinding a rule from the Biden administration that required state transportation departments to establish targets for reducing carbon dioxide emissions on federally funded highways. Transportation is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., responsible for about 28% of total emissions.Former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, who led the department under the Biden administration, had made efforts to align transportation policies with climate change goals, advocating for a reduction in carbon emissions from the sector. In 2022, Buttigieg emphasized that addressing climate change would require the transportation sector to play an active role, saying, If we care about climate change, we have to make transportation part of the solution. However, Duffys recent directive has rolled back these climate-conscious measures, signaling a stark contrast in approach between the two administrations. While Buttigieg and the Biden administration focused on integrating sustainability into transportation, Duffys policies move away from environmental targets, instead emphasizing more traditional infrastructure goals.Political Agendas and Policy ShiftsDuffys memo also included several other controversial directives that reflect broader political goals. Among them was an order to give preference to communities with marriage and birth rates higher than the national average, a policy that critics have argued could disproportionately affect marginalized groups. Additionally, the memo calls for a prohibition on DOT support to recipients who impose vaccine and mask mandates and mandates local compliance with federal immigration enforcement policies. These elements of the memo have raised questions about whether the Department of Transportation is using its authority to further the administrations political agenda, beyond the scope of its transportation-related responsibilities. Critics argue that such policies could undermine the departments core mission and interfere with its ability to carry out its duties effectively. The directive also aligns with broader efforts by the Trump administration to prioritize certain social and political values over more traditional policy goals. Critics contend that, by focusing on identity politics and pushing partisan objectives, Duffy is undermining the departments role in ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation infrastructure. The Broader Debate on Wokeism in GovernmentThe move to halt diversity observances and target woke policies is part of an ongoing ideological battle within the U.S. government, with Trumps allies seeking to curb what they describe as an overemphasis on progressive social issues. The term wokeism has become a flashpoint in American politics, often used by conservatives to critique what they see as left-wing overreach in policy-making.Supporters of these policy changes argue that government agencies should focus exclusively on their core missions, free from political or social agendas. They argue that programs promoting diversity and inclusion are unnecessary distractions that could undermine public trust in government agencies. However, critics warn that these policies may disproportionately harm marginalized communities, particularly LGBTQ+ individuals and people of color, by removing vital support systems that promote equity and inclusion. By eliminating these observances, they argue, the Trump administration is signaling a retreat from efforts to address systemic inequality and social justice. As Duffy and the Trump administration move forward with their agenda, many are questioning how these shifts will impact the future of federal policy, particularly in areas that intersect with social justice, climate change, and inclusivity. With tensions already high over issues of race, gender, and climate, the fallout from these changes is likely to spark continued debate and resistance across the political spectrum. The coming months will likely reveal the full impact of these policy shifts, as the transportation department and other agencies implement the Trump administrations directive to defend against what they view as divisive or unproductive policies. The long-term consequences of these changes, particularly for marginalized communities, remain to be seen. The post Transportation Department Ends Diversity Celebrations Under New Leadership appeared first on Gayety.

Human Rights Campaign to Lay Off 20% of Workforce in Major Restructuring Effort
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), one of the nations leading LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations, is set to lay off approximately 20% of its workforce as part of a major restructuring initiative aimed at adapting to shifting political and financial realities. According to sources familiar with the decision, the layoffs, which will impact around 50 employees, will take effect on February 12, 2024. Following the layoffs, the organization plans to operate with roughly 180 staff members, a significant reduction from its previous staffing levels. This restructuring comes amid a challenging political and financial landscape, with the HRC leadership signaling the need to operate differently in light of growing threats to LGBTQ+ rights and budgetary constraints.Financial Realities and Unsustainable GrowthWhile the HRC has enjoyed considerable fundraising success in recent years, the groups leadership has acknowledged that the organizations financial model is unsustainable. In fiscal year 2023, HRC raised $85 million, exceeding its $63 million fundraising target. However, a review of financial records, including IRS Form 990s, revealed that the groups total revenue decreased to approximately $75 million in fiscal year 2024, down from the previous years $85 million. The organizations expenses, however, have not decreased. In fiscal year 2024, HRCs total expenses were close to $89 million, resulting in a net asset decline of more than $12 million. As of March 31, 2024, HRCs net assets stood at $45.7 million, down from $58 million in 2023. Leadership determined that in order to balance the budget and sustain its operations, restructuring was necessary.HRCs president, Kelley Robinson, who has led the organization since 2022, has been tasked by the board to ensure a balanced budget and adapt to the current environment. In an official statement, one senior HRC official explained that the board had instructed Robinson to make the necessary adjustments to ensure HRC remains financially viable and effective in its advocacy efforts.External Pressures and Internal RestructuringIn addition to the financial challenges, HRC officials noted that the organization is facing increasingly hostile political and legislative attacks on LGBTQ+ rights. Robinson pointed out that the political landscapeparticularly the growing efforts to roll back LGBTQ+ protections at the state and federal levelshas forced many progressive organizations to rethink their strategies and structures. We are not just responding to threatswere transforming them into opportunities for lasting impact, one senior HRC official explained. This reset is really about strengthening our ability to win on these critical fights and keep our focus where we have the ability to make the most impact.Robinson also emphasized the importance of focusing on key areas where HRC can make a significant difference: schools, workplaces, policies, and politics. Were sharpening our focus on where we can make the most impact, Robinson said. This is about ensuring that we are agile and strategic in this moment.Commitment to LGBTQ+ Rights Despite ChallengesDespite the challenges, Robinson was adamant that HRCs core mission remains unchanged. Our success has never been determined by the number of staff we have but by the impact that we make in the world, she said. She acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but emphasized that this restructuring is necessary to ensure the organization can continue to make a difference in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. We need to stay laser-focused on how we can create change, Robinson added. One area where HRC remains committed is in its ongoing corporate partnerships. Despite growing opposition to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives from conservative forces, HRC continues to engage with companies on its Corporate Equality Index, which ranks businesses on LGBTQ+ workplace policies. Robinson highlighted that over 1,400 companies participated in the index last year, and the organizations Corporate Equality 100 awards continue to draw support from major corporate allies.Reorganization Will Focus on Key AreasMoving forward, HRC plans to place a particular emphasis on defending LGBTQ+ rights in schools and workplaces, ensuring that protections and resources are available for LGBTQ+ people in their daily lives. The organization will also continue its advocacy on policy and politics, defending against harmful legislation and working to advance both state and federal protections for LGBTQ+ people. In addition, HRC is shifting its approach to countering the wave of anti-LGBTQ+ disinformation that has become prevalent in political discourse. As part of its strategy, HRC will launch new storytelling initiatives to highlight the real-life impact of anti-LGBTQ+ policies. This effort will include media training for advocates and amplifying diverse voices within the community, including individuals like Daniel Trujillo, a Latino transgender advocate, and Emily Shilling, a U.S. Navy commander who has spoken out against anti-trans military bans.Union Involvement and Staff SupportHRC has been a unionized workplace for more than 25 years, with employees represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). The organization has already notified the union about the upcoming layoffs and is in discussions with union representatives to finalize the details. Robinson emphasized that the organization is committed to ensuring that affected employees are treated with dignity and respect. Were in active conversations with our union to make sure that we are honoring those discussions, she said. The union has not yet responded to requests for comment.Despite the financial restructuring and workforce reductions, HRC remains committed to its mission of advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. Robinson, who is expecting a child in the spring, expressed confidence in the leadership teams ability to maintain momentum during her maternity leave.A movement is bigger than any single person, Robinson said. I am proud to have a great chief of staff, a great chief operating officer, and an incredible team here at the Human Rights Campaign that will continue to move things forward.HRC also reaffirmed its commitment to hosting major events like the National Dinner and regional fundraising galas, which are vital for building community and raising funds to support its work.As the organization faces unprecedented challenges, both financially and politically, its leadership believes that these adjustments will ensure HRC remains a powerful and effective advocate for LGBTQ+ communities in the years to come. The post Human Rights Campaign to Lay Off 20% of Workforce in Major Restructuring Effort appeared first on Gayety.

Cabinet Confirmation Hearings Largely Ignore LGBTQ Issues Despite Disparate Impact of Agency Policy on LGBTQ People
The Senate confirmation hearings for President Donald Trumps nominees began January 14, 2025. Despite the critical roles these nominees, if confirmed, will play in shaping national policy, the hearings notably lack substantive questioning or responses regarding the safety and equality of LGBTQ people, even as President Trump has taken high interest in targeting the community [...]The post Cabinet Confirmation Hearings Largely Ignore LGBTQ Issues Despite Disparate Impact of Agency Policy on LGBTQ People first appeared on GLAAD.

These are the 'little boys' helping Elon Musk stage an unconstitutional takeover of government
It's been a long century in the three weeks that Donald Trump has been president again. We've rewound the clock to the 1800s, increased attacks on transgender people, given tech oligarchs the keys to the kingdom, and awarded an unelected man, Elon Musk, way more power than should have ever been approved by anyone. We're also, apparently, outsourcing a lot of Musk's work to a group of young men BlueSky users have dubbed the "Hitler Youth."Let's back up for a second. In case somehow you've missed it, Musk is the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is a non-existent government branch created by Trump that's seemingly meant to wipe out everyone in the federal government and replace them with Trump loyalists. Over the weekend, Musk shockingly managed to gain access to Treasury payment systems which essentially allowed him to dig into things like people's Social Security and Medicare payment systems. This is a gross amount of power for an unelected official but it's made worse by the fact that an expos from WIRED revealed that this access has also gone to engineers between the ages of 19 and 24, and most of them have been linked to Musk's companies. It's also uncertain if any or all of these youth workers are citizens or working on an H1-B visa.See on InstagramThe article identified six engineers -- Akash Bobba, Edward Coristine, Luke Farritor, Gautier Cole Killian, Gavin Kliger, and Ethan Shaotran -- who have "little to no government experience" who now have "critical roles" in DOGE, which is tasked with "modernizing Federal technology and software to maximize efficiency and productivity." (@) Apparently, at least one of these young men is working as a volunteer. According to social media reactions, Edward Coristine is a 19-year-old Canadian who calls himself "Big Balls," and he's the biggest source of everyone's face palming and worrying about our future.Contrary to some info I've seen, 19-yr-old Doge staffer "BigBalls" Edward Coristine did not delete his X account, it's just renamed and is private. Wired reported that govt tech workers had to defend their work to the Neuralink intern in an Office Space-esque scene. / more for Canadians[image or embed] Jacqueline Sweet (@jsweetli.bsky.social) February 2, 2025 at 10:22 AMSo, this is where we're at in "Making America Great Again," but at least "Big Balls" is here to save the day, right? There's so much to unpack here, and it's hard to know where to start. It's difficult for the people who care about America to watch it become a joke. Every day feels like a decade.Like so many other things going on, this has been met with a wide range of resistance from people on the left and those who simply oppose fascism. Keep scrolling for some reactions that remind us that the resistance is, in fact, still at large. The Task Force and 200+ organizations stand up for LGBTQIA2S+ freedom
The National LGBTQ Task Force has issued a press release along with 200 LGBTQ+ organizations in solidarity, addressing a commitment to advancing freedom during the second Trump administration. Read the full release below. A Message to Our Community from 200+ Organizations Committed to Advancing LGBTQIA2S+ FreedomRemember: were stronger together. Dont run and hide. We have to be more visible and unified than ever! Miss Major Griffin-GracyMiss Majorgave the LGBTQ+ community and our allies this call to action in October 2018, under the first Trump Administration. She addressed our fear and anxiety as we reacted to a leaked draft of a rule detailing changes to how Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act would be implemented, which would remove protections from discrimination for many marginalized communities. She ended her gentle message to her beloved trans and gender nonconforming community with a powerful reminder:We are still here.We are here because of the love and care of movement leaders like Miss Major. In every community across the United States, there are trans elders who have shown us how to navigate moments like this. We honor Miss Major, our trans elders, and our trans youth by advocating for a healthcare system that cares for us from youth to our golden years because every person, across race, gender and ability, deserves to live long, healthy, joyful lives. We are here because of the grit and humor ofCeciliaGentili, who taught us that we are all worth fighting for. When this administration and its supporters act to dim our light, we honor Cecilia by showing up for our community and shining bright as our true selves. We are here because of the vision and tenacity ofLorena Borjas, mother to trans migrants, and an inspiration to all of us who believe that liberation for LGBTQIA2S+ people is a global commitment. We honor Lorena by fighting to keep our families and communities whole. We are here because ofMonicaRoberts fierce commitment to telling our stories and uplifting our history. We honor Monica by taking on those who try to bully their way into power, who ban books and medical care, and pass laws controlling who we can be and love.In these challenging times, we remind ourselves that ours is a legacy of care. Our stories, our families, our art, our voices, and our lives are powerful. We hold onto this truth:Those working to divide us cannot take away our joy because they didnt give it to us in the first place. Trans and queer joy will always exist because trans and queer people will always be here. Its crucial for LGBTQIA2S+ communities, organizations, and our allies across the country to come together. • This Is Not A Test Promises A Queer 90s Set Twist On The Zombie Genre
    WWW.PRIDE.COM
Out stars join 'This Is Not a Test' which promises a queer, '90s-set twist on the zombie genre
YA horror fans, get ready: This Is Not a Test is getting the big-screen treatment. The apocalyptic thriller, based on Courtney Summers novel of the same name, is officially in development with Cruel Summer's Olivia Holt, The Strangers: Chapter 1s Froy Gutierrez, and Bros star Luke MacFarlane leading the cast. Directed by Adam MacDonald (Backcountry, Pyewacket), the film is being described as The Breakfast Club meets 28 Weeks Later, which sounds like a messy, emotional, and bloody good time. For those unfamiliar, This Is Not a Test follows Sloane (Holt), a high schooler grappling with her own struggles when a full-scale zombie outbreak forces her and four other students to take shelter in their high school. As the infected pound on the doors, Sloanewho initially had no will to survivestarts seeing the world through the eyes of those who desperately want to live. And when push comes to shove, she decides to take matters into her own hands.Producer Cybill Lui promises the film will be both an emotional and terrifying ride, telling Variety, Were dead set on making an intense, emotional, and gripping film set in the 90s. See on InstagramWith intentional comparisons to The Breakfast Club, we can probably expect a group of misfits, deep personal revelations, and the impending threat of zombies instead of Saturday detention.Outside of how much we love the plot, having daddy MacFarlane and hunky Gutierrez as part of the cast adds another layer of excitement to the project. While details on their roles remain under wraps, their involvement signals that This Is Not a Test could deliver some much-needed queer representation in the YA horror genre outside of just casting queer people.See on InstagramIf the film follows the book closely, theres already a notable queer character at the heart of the story. They'd be smart to tap into that, and doing so would set this adaptation apart in an era of mainstream horror that is still catching up on LGBTQ+ inclusion.See on InstagramSummers herself is thrilled with the adaptation, stating, From its stellar script to its exciting cast, [MacDonald and Luis] enthusiasm for the book and their passion for filmmaking has and continues to define every part of this process. I cant wait to see the story come to lifeor should I say death? No release date has been announced yet, but with filming set to begin in Canada this month, it likely wont be long before we get some more details, such as who will take on which character. Hopedfully, horror audiences will get the queer representation they deserve!

10 Democrats who are actually doing something about Trump for the love of god
January seemed to last approximately 537 years, and February isnt looking much better as the public watches President Donald Trump and his cronies quickly dismantle the U.S. government and roll back any and all protections for the LGBTQ+ community. But while its easy to feel frozen by fear and an overwhelming sense that there is little that can done to make a difference, some Democrats arent sitting around waiting for their next chance at having a majority in Congress or a Democrat in the White House. Instead, they are standing up and fighting back against the Trump policies that threaten the very fabric of our democracy.Rep. Jasmine Crockett (@) Rep. Jasmine Crockett joined a protest outside of the Treasury on February 4 alongside Sen. Chuck Schumer to try to combat Elon Musk's seeming takeover of the US government. "We are going to be in your faces, we're gonna be on your ass, we're going to make sure you understand that this is what democracy looks like, Crockett said in a powerful speech given at the protest. Rep. Ilhan Omar (@) Rep. Ilhan Omar, the first Somali American congresswoman, has been quoted in a video as helping undocumented immigrants by advising them not to talk to ICE if they are approached in light of the mass deportation plans Trump is currently working on. "You are not obligated to answer their questions. Just state that your are advised by a lawyer not to answer questions," Omar told a reporter, according to Newsweek. "Disclosure of your name, immigration status, and the mode of entry is not mandatory. Learn the laws and prepare yourself and refrain from disclosing information that you prefer them not to know."Sen. Chuck Schumer (@) Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer joined a rally outside the Treasury Department on February 4 to protest Musk gaining control of the U.S. government and access to the Treasury payment system. On the same day, he and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries introduced their Stop the Steal bill in a tongue-in-cheek reference to the MAGA rallying cry over false election fraud claims to prevent Musk from any unlawful meddling in the Treasury Departments payment systems.Rep. Al Green (@) We're only a little over two weeks into the Trump presidency, but he's already well on his way to being impeached again. On February 5, Rep. Al Green announced he was planning to introduce articles of impeachment against Trump after the MAGA president said the U.S. would take over Gaza, Politico reports."Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. and injustice in Gaza is a threat to justice in the United States of America," Green said in a floor speech on Capitol Hill. "I rise to announce that the movement to impeach the president has begun. I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done."Rep. Hakeem Jeffires (@) Instead of just sitting idly by while Trump reshapes the U.S. government, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries released a letter to his Democratic colleagues laying out a 10-point plan for combating Trump, including this intent to introduce a bill to prevent unlawful access to the Treasury Departments payment system.Sen. Brian Schatz (@) Brian Schatz saying hell put a blanket hold on Trump nominationsSen. Brian Schatz, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, announced on February 3 that he plans to put a blanket hold on all of Trumps nominees to the State Department until the president agrees not to go forward with his plan to dismantle Americas foreign aid agency, USAID.Until and unless this brazenly authoritarian action is reversed and USAID is functional again, I will be placing a blanket hold on all of the Trump administrations State Department nominees. This is self-inflicted chaos of epic proportions that will have dangerous consequences all around the world, Schatz said in a statement, The Hill reports.Rep. Ayanna Pressley (@) Rep. Ayanna Presley protested alongside Sen Chuck Schumer and Rep. Jasmine Crockett on February 4 and gave a speech condemning Musk for how much power and influence he now seems to hold in the U.S. government. Im so tired of these billionaire boys and their grubby little hands grabbing at everything, she said to a large crowd outside the Treasury Department. Hands off our bodies. Hands off our data. Hands off our tax refunds. Hands off our Social Security checks. Hands off our constitution. Hands off our democracy. Hands off!Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester (@) Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester is pushing back against Project 2024 and the MAGA agenda by issuing a statement to her constituents promising that she will oppose every cabinet-level nominee that Trump brings to the Senate floor.California Gov. Gavin Newsom (@) When Trump came to visit California after the devastating fires in Los Angeles, Gov. Gavin Newsom may have agreed to work with him, telling reporters, Its not about me, its about people we both represent, but hes also been quietly working to protect the undocumented immigrants living in the Golden State. Newsom requested a special session with the states lawmakers to use funds to protect immigrants. While they haven't been voted on yet, the two new pieces of legislation would allow the California Department of Justice to use $25 million on legal fights with the Trump administration and would grant $25 million in grants to non-profits tasked with providing immigration-related legal services. Sen. Bernie Sanders (@) Outspoken Trump critic Sen. Bernie Sanders an independent who caucuses with the Democrats took to the floor of the Senate on February 4 to give an impassioned speech against the "America's dangerous movement toward oligarchy, authoritarianism, and kleptocracy. He placed the blame firmly at the feet of Trump, Musk, and other billionaire tech CEO who suck up the nations wealth and then use it to control the government. The Trump administration is moving this country very aggressively into an authoritarian society where the rule of law, and our Constitution, are being ignored and undermined in order to give more power to the White House and the billionaires who now control our government," Sanders said, reported Common Dreams.

Target drops DEI initiatives and learns there are harsh consequences
Target is facing the harsh reality that actions have consequences after ending their DEI initiatives. The retailer is currently being sued for allegedly hiding the risks of ending the companys DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) programs after customers angry about the move started a boycott. Last month, Target joined major corporations across the country who have been rolling back diversity initiatives in the wake of President Donald Trump taking power. The company also issued a memo that said it would end its Racial Equity Action and Change program and will be stopping all external diversity-focused surveys including HRCs Corporate Equality index, the Advocate reports. The backlash to the move was swift, with civil rights activists and people across social media calling for a boycott. Georgia pastor Dr. Jamal Bryan even told his congregation that they should participate in a 40-day fast from Target. Now, the mega-store is realizing that while ditching diversity programs may win over Republicans, there are also very real consequences. (@) Target shareholders, led by the City of Riviera Beach Police Pension Fund in Florida, filed a class action lawsuit, claiming Target defrauding them by artificially inflated stock prices and failing to warn inventors about how removing DEI and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) policies could cause stock prices to plummet, Forbes reports. The lawsuit also says that Target concealed the backlash it suffered from the May 2023 Pride Month campaign after the company removed the LGBTQ+ merchandise after confrontations happened in stores. Target lost $15.7 billion of market value after share prices fell 22% on Nov. 20, 2024.The lawsuit was filed after January 24, when Target announced it was ending its DEI initiatives. This move walked back the companys commitment to diversity that increased after the police killing of George Floyd in 2020 when the retailer created a program to support Black businesses.

We Cant Stop Staring at Jonathan Bailey in Jurassic World: Rebirth Thanks to This New Trailer
The Jurassic Park franchise has always captivated audiences with its thrilling spectacle of dinosaurs, chaos, and larger-than-life action. Since the release of Steven Spielbergs iconic 1993 film, the series has evolved through sequels, reboots, and reinventions, continuously delivering the same exhilaration of watching towering prehistoric creatures on screen. While some entries have faced mockery and criticism for their outlandish plots, the franchises mix of absurdity, star power, and entertainment has remained its core appeal. With the release of the first trailer for Jurassic World: Rebirth on February 7, Universal Pictures has reignited that excitement, delivering a visual feast that promises even more high-stakes action. The film, slated to hit theaters in 2024, continues the saga five years after the events of Jurassic World: Dominion in 2022. While some fans may question the timelines consistency, the franchises commitment to delivering thrills over logical precision remains intact. Dinosaurs, after all, are not meant to be bound by reality.Bechir Sylvain, Jonathan Bailey, and Scarlett Johansson. Photo: Universal PicturesIn this new chapter, the world has become largely uninhabitable for dinosaurs, forcing the once-dominant creatures to seek refuge in a few remaining safe havens. Among them is the iconic original Jurassic Park, which has long been abandoned by humans due to its inherent dangers. Enter Scarlett Johansson, who plays Zora Bennett, a covert operations expert with a mission to retrieve DNA samples from the three largest dinosaurs in the world. The DNA is crucial to the development of a life-saving medical breakthrough. To accomplish her mission, Zora enlists the help of Dr. Henry Loomis, a paleontologist played by Jonathan Bailey. While there are certainly additional plot elements that will unfold, the trailer highlights the central dynamic between Johanssons Zora and Baileys Henry, which promises to bring humor, suspense, and adventure in equal measure. One of the standout moments from the trailer showcases Baileys Henry as he gazes up in awe at a giant dinosaur, whispering, Whoa, my god! His expression of wonder echoes the audiences likely reaction, as the film invites viewers into a world where awe and danger are intertwined. The visual effects in Rebirth have notably improved, with the dinosaurs appearing more lifelike and less cartoonish than in some of the recent franchise installments. The CGI department has certainly stepped up its game, delivering impressive depictions of these prehistoric creatures in their full glory.Jurassic World: Rebirth looks set to deliver its signature action-packed set pieces, with raptors returning to the fray and promises of even more thrilling sequences. However, what has always set the franchise apart is its ability to balance high-octane action with a sense of humor. The original Jurassic Park was as much a comedy as it was an action-horror film, with moments of light-hearted banter woven into the chaos. Early indications suggest that Rebirth will follow this tradition. In one of the trailers lighter moments, Johanssons Zora quips to Baileys Henry, I can guarantee your safety. More or less, to which Henry adorably responds, More or less?! This playful back-and-forth showcases the chemistry between the two leads. Bailey, who has earned widespread recognition for his roles in Bridgerton, Wicked, and Fellow Travelers, further proves his ability to deliver charming comedic moments.Another humorous exchange comes between Baileys Henry and Rupert Friends character, Martin Krebs. When Krebs asks if they need to collect a sample from an egg, Henry sarcastically replies, I suppose we could try to get it from the parent, but theyre a flying carnivore the size of an F16. This exchange highlights Baileys impeccable comedic timing and adds a layer of levity to the otherwise high-stakes narrative.Beyond the laughs and thrills, Jurassic World: Rebirth holds significant cultural importance, especially with Jonathan Baileys starring role. Baileys casting is notable not only for his immense talent but also for being one of the first openly gay actors to lead a blockbuster action film. His role in this high-profile project marks a milestone for LGBTQ+ representation in Hollywood, as he joins the ranks of major stars in a genre traditionally dominated by straight actors. In addition to his acting prowess, Baileys charm and relatability have earned him a devoted fan base, and Rebirth is poised to solidify his status as a leading man in the industry. As he continues to captivate audiences with his performances, Baileys presence in a franchise as iconic as Jurassic World is a momentous step forward for LGBTQ+ visibility in mainstream cinema. As the Jurassic World franchise continues to evolve, Rebirth promises to deliver everything fans love about the series: action, humor, and, of course, dinosaurs. Whether youre in it for the thrills, the laughs, or the spectacle, this latest installment looks set to offer it allalong with a fresh dose of star power from Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey. With Rebirth, the adventure is far from over. The post We Cant Stop Staring at Jonathan Bailey in Jurassic World: Rebirth Thanks to This New Trailer appeared first on Gayety.

Trump Signs Executive Order Blocking Federal Funds for Schools Allowing Transgender Women in Sports
Former President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at restricting transgender women and girls from participating in sports designated for cisgender females. The order blocks federal funding for schools that allow transgender athletes to compete on womens sports teams and mandates that the Department of Justice take legal action against institutions permitting such participation. The executive order also outlines a plan to convene representatives from major athletic organizations and governing bodies to create guidelines that would prevent transgender women from competing in womens sports. Additionally, the order threatens to bar cisgender American athletes from international sports competitions if those events permit transgender athletes to compete alongside cisgender athletes. The move continues Trumps track record of opposing transgender rights, especially in the realm of education and athletics. The order argues that transgender women competing in womens sports is demeaning, unfair, and dangerous, and claims it deprives cisgender women of fair opportunities to compete. It also states that transgender female participation in female sports is a violation of womens dignity, safety, and privacy. The order underscores that the Presidents interpretation of the law governs, citing the desire to protect the integrity of womens sports. The policy argues that the inclusion of trans women in female athletic spaces results in the endangerment, humiliation, and silencing of cisgender women and girls. It continues, It shall also be the policy of the United States to oppose male competitive participation in womens sports more broadly, as a matter of safety, fairness, dignity, and truth. This directive marks the latest development in the ongoing debate over transgender rights in sports, which has divided lawmakers and advocacy groups. Trumps executive order takes direct aim at policies implemented during the administration of President Joe Biden, which took a more inclusive stance on transgender rights. Under Biden, Title IX, the landmark civil rights law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in education, was interpreted to protect transgender students from discrimination. In contrast, Trumps order attempts to reinterpret Title IX in a manner that would deny the existence of transgender people in female athletics. Trumps position directly opposes the previous administrations understanding of the law, effectively reversing protections that had been extended to transgender individuals.Despite the Biden administrations inclusive stance, there have been no federal guidelines issued to regulate transgender participation in sports at the K-12 or collegiate levels. In April 2023, the Biden administration proposed a rule allowing schools to limit the participation of transgender athletes, while ensuring that outright bans would be prohibited. However, this proposal was rescinded in December 2024, with the administration stating that the issue was legally complex and too contentious to pursue further.Trumps new order directs the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Justice to take punitive actions against schools that violate the directive, including the possibility of lawsuits or the withholding of federal funds. The order also targets educational institutions that permit transgender athletes to compete in womens sports, and further mandates that any such policies be revoked.Furthermore, the order calls for a meeting of major athletic organizations within 60 days, urging them to adopt anti-transgender policies, particularly regarding transgender womens participation in female sports categories. The order also requests that state attorneys general develop best practices for ensuring equal opportunities for women in sports, with a focus on the alleged harm caused by the inclusion of transgender athletes.Trumps directive also addresses international athletics, asking the U.S. government to encourage other nations to adopt anti-transgender policies and pressuring the International Olympic Committee to ban transgender athletes from competing in future Olympic Games. In comments made prior to signing the order, Trump claimed that the executive action would prevent men from beating up, injuring, and cheating our women and our girls. He cited unverified claims that transgender athletes had accumulated over 3,500 victories in womens competitions, though he provided no evidence to support this assertion. He also mentioned a purported incident where a male boxer allegedly stole a womens gold medal during the Paris Olympics, a claim that has been debunked as a misunderstanding of a cisgender athletes participation.Trumps order has been met with strong opposition from LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations, with Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson criticizing the move. Robinson said that the order risks exposing young transgender athletes to harassment and discrimination. She added that the order would create divisive and harmful policies at a time when the country is facing pressing issues in education and society. In a separate statement, GLAAD denounced the order as inaccurate and incoherent, emphasizing that all women and girls, including transgender women, should have the right to participate in sports. GLAAD further noted that the order does not change the law or the facts, reinforcing the belief that transgender athletes should be free from legal and political attacks. As of now, 27 states have enacted laws banning transgender athletes from participating in girls and womens sports. These policies affect not only K-12 students but also extend to collegiate teams and co-ed recreational leagues. The restrictions have led to instances of trans-vestigation, where cisgender athletes are questioned or scrutinized due to their perceived gender identity, further fueling the debate over fairness and inclusion in sports.Trumps executive order represents a major escalation in the ongoing battle over transgender rights in the U.S. The decision is expected to further polarize the debate, as both sides continue to advocate for their positions on how to define fairness and inclusion in competitive athletics. The post Trump Signs Executive Order Blocking Federal Funds for Schools Allowing Transgender Women in Sports appeared first on Gayety.

Jacques Audiard Says Hes Had No Contact with Karla Sofa Gascn Since Her Apology, Calls Her Behavior Self-Destructive
Director Jacques Audiard has broken his silence regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding Emilia Prez star Karla Sofa Gascn, whose Oscar campaign has been marred by the resurfacing of racist and controversial tweets. The director, in a recent interview with Deadline, expressed his disappointment in Gascns behavior and distanced himself from the actress, stating that he does not understand why she continues to make decisions that could harm herself and those around her.I havent spoken to her, and I dont want to, Audiard said, emphasizing that he does not feel the need to engage with Gascn, whom he described as being in a self-destructive state. He further questioned her motives, saying, Why is she harming herself? Why? I dont understand it, and what I dont understand about this too is why shes harming people who were very close to her.The controversy stems from Gascns social media posts from 2020 and 2021, which sparked outrage when they resurfaced in late January. The posts, which addressed sensitive topics such as George Floyds death, Muslims, and the COVID-19 pandemic, were widely condemned and led to a significant backlash. Gascns actions subsequently undermined her Oscar campaign for Best Actress, and have also impacted Emilia Prez as a whole. Actress Zoe Saldaa, a frontrunner for Best Supporting Actress, publicly disavowed Gascns remarks, and Netflix reportedly distanced itself from the actress, removing her image from promotional materials and not inviting her to upcoming award season events.Despite the growing fallout, Gascn has continued to defend herself publicly and deactivated accounts online. In an effort to address the damage caused by her statements, she appeared in an interview with CNN in Spanish and posted a lengthy statement on Instagram, asserting that she is not racist. However, Audiard expressed frustration with Gascns approach, particularly her victim-blaming rhetoric.Shes really playing the victim, Audiard said. Shes talking about herself as a victim, which is surprising. Its as if she thought that words dont hurt. He expressed disbelief at her attempts to downplay the gravity of her actions. In her initial statement following the controversy, Gascn acknowledged the hurt caused by her past posts. As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well, and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain, she said. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness. While Gascns scandal has stolen much of the attention surrounding Emilia Prez, the film itself has faced its own criticisms. Some members of the Latino community have expressed dissatisfaction with the portrayal of Mexican culture in the film, prompting Audiard to respond. The director defended his creative vision, explaining that Emilia Prez was intended as an opera rather than a realistic depiction of Mexico. It seems Im being attacked in the court of realism. Well, Ive never claimed that I wanted to make a realistic work, Audiard said. If I wanted to make a work that was particularly documented, then I would do a documentary, but then there would be no singing and dancing.Audiard further addressed a review that criticized the film for including photocopiers in night markets, a claim he dismissed as misguided. In night markets in Mexico City, one also doesnt sing and dance, he noted. You have to accept that is part of the magic here. This is an opera, not a criticism of anything about Mexico.Emilia Prez has certainly faced its share of hurdles, but Audiard is steadfast in his commitment to the project. The films unique blend of opera, musicality, and emotional depth, according to the director, is central to the story he is tellingone that is not bound by the constraints of realism. As the controversy continues to unfold, it remains unclear what the future holds for both Emilia Prez and Gascns career. While Audiard has made it clear that he no longer wishes to engage with Gascn, the actress continues to address the fallout from her past statements. Whether the film and its stars can overcome the ongoing scrutiny is yet to be seen, but Audiard remains focused on his artistic vision, confident that his work will be judged on its own terms rather than the controversy surrounding Gascn. The post Jacques Audiard Says Hes Had No Contact with Karla Sofa Gascn Since Her Apology, Calls Her Behavior Self-Destructive appeared first on Gayety.

Spencer Macnaughton | Uncloseted Media Weekly Newsletter | Why Dropping the "T" from LGBTQ Will Harm the Whole Community
Subscribe nowAs of this week, the State Department has dropped the T from the LGBTQ acronym and now only addresses LGB Travelers. Similarly, what was originally a page titled Resources for LGBTQI+ Prospective Adoptive Parents now just says LGB Prospective Adoptive Parents. The Social Security Administration's website formerly had a page about Social Security for LGBTQI+ People. It has now been updated to LGBQ People. In addition, the Health and Human Services Department announced that grant funding for gender ideology programs is permanently terminated. There is a loud minority of gay, lesbian, and bisexual folks who are thrilled about the idea of erasing our trans and nonbinary siblings. They dont believe the idea that someone can actually be trans. Or theyre riled up by algorithms telling them to use transphobia as a vehicle to quell their insecurities, their despair, or their loneliness.Michael Deacon, British political journalist for The Telegraph, published a column this week titled LGBT is over whether the BBC likes it or not. He wrote about how radical activists combined gay and trans issues into one and that dropping the T isyou guessed itcommon sense. But heres where Deacon and many folks who feel similarly to him are misinformed and manipulated by the messaging that exists in Americas right-wing circles: The folks in charge of erasing trans people from American existence are waiting with bated breath and are ready to come hard and fast for the rest of the alphabet. Yes, that means gay marriage. Yes, that means same-sex adoption. Yes, that means revisiting whether homosexuality should be classified as a mental illness or not. Many of the organizations and the people in Trumps ear are connected to anti-LGBTQ hate groups who are in favor of gay conversion therapy and are opposed to marriage equality. These groups operate in developing countries where they come after not just trans people butwait for itgay and bisexual people as well. For them, undermining the whole alphabet is their version of common sense.Just ask Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, who has compared gay marriage to giving pets and pedophiles the right to marry and described it as the dark harbinger of chaos and sexual anarchy that could doom even the strongest republic. As American culture bleeds further to the far-right when it comes to LGBTQ issues, be prepared to continue the fight for the LGB rights that many of us assumed had already been won.It pains me to even have to write something to convince LGB folks and allies to care about our trans and nonbinary siblings. Whether or not you like the idea of having us all part of one alphabet, this is a conversation about basic human rights. To cheer on or stay silent as the American government aims to erase one of the most marginalized groups in our society is inhumane.Upgrade to paid to support LGBTQ-focused accountability journalism. Why LGBTQ+ communities face higher risks of nicotine addiction
When it comes to the LGBTQ+ community and commercial tobacco use, the statistics are daunting.According to what was last available via the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)whose numbers have now been erased because of an executive order from President Donald Trumpabout one in six lesbian, gay and bisexual adults smoke cigarettes, compared with about one in nine of their heterosexual/straight counterparts. Cigarette smoking is also higher among transgender adults than cisgender adults. Also, commercial tobacco use among queer youth is more prevalent than non-LGBTQ+ youth. Smoking prevalence is 38-59% for LGBTQ+ youth, compared to 28%-35% for the general youth population, according to theAmerican Lung Association.Commercial tobacco use (as opposed to ceremonial tobacco use among Native Americans) in the queer population is about 40% higher than with their non-queer counterparts, confirmed National LGBT Cancer Network Executive Director Scout. (Side note: Scout got involved in healthcare advocacy from their days in ACT UPwhen, at one point, they were arrested with Windy City Times Owner Tracy Baim at a protest in Chicago against Westboro Baptist Church.) Scout noticed a trend: The numbers started to move downbut as soon asother tobacco products came into play, the numbers started to go back up again. But there are also stressors that can trigger commercial tobacco use, or nicotine addiction, as Scout has classified itand the current president embodies one of those triggering factors. The new administration put out an edict that all data related to trans people had to be stripped off of federal websites by5 p.m.[on Jan. 31], they explained. But also, federal data is not fast enough to measure those changes, but we did another research project knowing that this was coming. It covered about five states, and we got volunteer researchers and community organizations to interview people right before and right after the election. Smoking changes didnt happen that quickly, but as an indicator of the stress-based changes, anxiety increased 45%, depression by 19% and feelings of dread by 30% among trans Americans from the month before to the election until the week after; 80% reported that these health problems interfere with their daily functioning. However, simply being part of the queer community increases the likelihood of commercial tobacco usage as well. Multiplestudieshave shown factors such as internalized LGBTQ+-phobia, perceived stigma, and prejudice regarding sexual orientation and gender identity (which now mayincrease with developments such as DEI rollbacks) were associated with increased probability of cigarette and marijuana use in LGBTQ+ individuals.Marketing also contributes to the increased usage in the LGBTQ+ community, especially on social media. However, Scout talked about another aspect of nicotine-addiction marketingdirectly reaching out to traditionally underserved demographics: The tobacco industry is using a strategy of using newer products that fall outside of any regulatory frameworklike [the nicotine pouch] ZYNfaster than the FDA can respond. We fought so hard to get flavored cigarettes off the market and the only flavor thats left with traditional cigarettesand thats disproportionately used by queers, Latinx people, African Americans and Native Americansis menthol, they said. The one disproportionately used by minority populations was the only one that was allowed to stay. And the tobacco industry went on a huge campaign hiring people such as Al Sharpton. As a result, people like the ACLU are defending keeping this in; theyre using the argument that, since Black folks are using it, taking the items away will hurt that population. But then Scout added, Now you get to the new game. Those flavors arent banned for all the new products, so now were going to get an e-cigarette that looks like a high-tech product and were going to get a vape bar that looks like Starbucks. And youre going to go in for a customized experience and were going to give you 200 flavors like cherry Starburst or Capn Crunch. You put It all together and its a huge [attraction] for youth. And then if you had the vulnerable youth to the equationthose already struggling to fit inand its a toxic brew.National LGBT Cancer Network Executive Director Scout. Photo: LinkedInThe marketing also includes direct outreach to the LGBTQ+ community, according to Scout: Theyre now reaching out directly to our thought leadersparticularly, an organization run by a dear friend of mine who was a big tobacco-control advocate. A year before, he signed a letter about how menthol needed to be out. The Center for Black Equitya parent organization to all Black Prides around the countrywas run by Earl Fowlkes, a dear friend of mine. Last spring, the vaping industry came around and said, You know, all this regulation is really going to deny access. All of these smokers who are trying to get off of cigarettes and want to use vapes. Can we please partner with you on this? They asked different EDs and most said no. Eight months later, the Center for Black Equity came out with a reportslick as icethat was written by a white former Clinton Administration member; it said that we really need vapes, particularly the flavored ones. Now, people are seeing so many ads that reporters are asking What is up with this? Now theyre using our influencers against us. [Note: The Center for Black Equity vaping report is atthis link. A related press release is atthis link.]Marketing efforts, according to theTruth Initiative, can also include funding HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ+ organizations and events.Waking up in the middle of the night to smokeThe effects of nicotine addiction are many, encompassing everything from anxiety to restlessness to cardiovascular disease to cancer to depression. So how does one recognize nicotine addiction?A really good test that stands the strength of time is seeing how long you can go without smoking after you wake up, Scout said. Back in the day, people would wake up in the middle of the night to smoke, or had to have a smoke while showering. But now, people are smoking less, so thats great. But the problem with nicotineespecially these little tobacco products theyre usingis that people will say, I just smoke occasionally. But then youll wake up and say, Ive been smoking occasionally for the last decade. Oops! With our community, we also have an increase in social smoking. People just do it when theyre out with their friendswhich, I guess, is better than doing it every day. But we want to be healthy influences on each other. But there are things you can do, like dont smoke around other people. Do it as much as you want, but dont do it around other people because its a socially transmitted disease. Weve talked with people in youth groups and they said that they hadnt started smoking until they joined other people outside.Scout underscored the significance of addiction with an astounding statistic: I read an article in a doctors office that said that if youre a cigarette smoker, the only semi-conscious thing in your life that youve done more than smoke is blink.Scout conceded that smoking cessation is a comprehensive endeavor: First, you try to combat the actual physiological addictionbut battling the habit is a long effort. However, they had tips on how to tackle cessation. You have to be gentle with yourself, Scout said. It takes about an average of seven times before people achieve success, so dont try it once and quit. Also, dont say, Im going to quit on Tuesday because thats what my cousin did and it worked for them. Well, my cousin mightve won the lottery but that doesnt mean Im going to buy a ticket. Use the sciencecall a quit line.Scout noted that quit lines such as 1-800-QUIT-NOW have people trained to be queer-welcoming.The quit lines might recommend that you see your doctor about medications. See your doctors and tell your friends; get social support. Get the counseling. Slowly gather your resources so you can start your cessation attempt. If you dont make it to full cessation but you cut down, thats a win.The tobacco industry wants you to blame yourself for smoking, because that freezes you from being able to do something about it. If you look at the fact that theyve been targeting our community with this kind of manipulation for decades, its a little easier for you to get upset about the freeze. For most people, if you dont smoke before youre 18, youre home-free so this is a pediatric thingand its the only pediatric epidemic where we somehow blame the victim. So please dont blame yourself. The post Why LGBTQ+ communities face higher risks of nicotine addiction appeared first on News Is Out.

'Matilda' star Mara Wilson goes viral for scathing critique of Trump's trans sports ban
Queer actress Mara Wilson is going viral on social media after posting a scathing critique of President Donald Trumps executive order banning trans women and girls from competing in womens sports.Wilson took to Bluesky on Wednesday after Trump signed his fourth executive order targeting transgender people that he has signed since taking office on January 20.I know pointing out hypocrisy doesnt matter anymore, but if theres one person I wouldnt want to be the judge of who goes into locker rooms, it would be the man who openly boasted about walking into dressing rooms of underage girls, the former child star wrote on Bluesky on February 6.The executive order, titled Keeping Men Out of Womens Sports, prohibits the participation of transgender girls and women in female sports categories and will mandate immediate enforcement against school and athletic associations that "deny women single-sex sports and single-sex locker rooms. At a signing ceremony surrounded by young female athletes, Trump falsely claimed that men are beating up, injuring, and cheating our women and our girls and told the crowd that "womens sports will be only for women, the Advocate reports."Under the Trump administration, we will defend the proud tradition of female athletes, and we will not allow men to beat up, injure and cheat our women and our girls," Trump said at a signing ceremony surrounded by young female athletes.Wilsons post pointed out that Trump has railed against trans women who he insists are men entering womens locker rooms despite the fact that in 2005, he bragged on Howard Sterns radio shows that he was allowed backstage at the pageants he owns where women are often naked. Trump owned not only the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants but also Miss Teen USA, which features girls as young as 15.Well, Ill tell you the funniest is that before a show, Ill go backstage and everyones getting dressed, and everything else, and you know, no men are anywhere, and Im allowed to go in because Im the owner of the pageant and therefore Im inspecting it, Trump said, as reported by CNN. You know, Im inspecting because I want to make sure that everything is good. This isnt the first time Wilson, who came out as bi/queer back in 2017, has spoken out against rampant conservatism. She has also railed against Trump, criticized ICE, and taken on anti-abortion rights activists by posting on X (formerly Twitter).

Tesla sales tank in Europe amid Elon Musk's growing controversies
While billionaire CEO Elon Musk has been busy quickly infiltrating every corner of the U.S. government, Tesla profits have been plummeting.Musks increased visibility and connection to the Trump administration has been a popularity test that he seems to have failed at least in Europe. The electric car company sold nearly 60% fewer cars in Germany last month than it did in the previous January. On Wednesday, the German Federal Motor Transport Authority reported that the number of newly registered Tesla vehicles dropped 59.5% in January, while the overall German market was only down 2.8% during the same period, Reuters reports. This drastic drop in sales comes during the same month when Musk criticized Germans for having too much of a focus on past guilt for crimes Nazis committed during the Holocaust and urged people to vote for a hard-right nationalist party during Germanys general election, according to the New York Times.Despite Germany being home to Teslas only factory in Europe, only 1,277 new Teslas were registered last month. Instead, Germans were buying domestic and Chinese electric cars, which increased by 54% in demand in January. But it wasnt just Germany where Tesla sales are taking a nosedive, sales also plummeted 63% in France and 12% in Britain, where Musk has made inflammatory comments about Prime Minister Keir Starker. Car registration data earlier this month shows that registered Teslas were down 44% in Sweden where Tesla mechanics have been striking for more than a year now and 38% in Norway.According to the New York Times, a report by Schmidt Automotive Research linked the drop in sales in Germany to incendiary comments Musk made while speaking at a gathering of the ultra-conservative Alternative for Germany party just days before the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the gesture Musk at Trumps inauguration celebration, which most people agree was a Nazi salute. There could be reasons for dwindling Tesla purchases other than Musk being embroiled in controversy, including that consumers may be waiting for the updated Model Y to make their purchase. In the U.S., where Musk has had increased visibility this year as he inserts himself into the American government and the Trump administration, there has also been a drop off in sales, though it hasnt been as drastic as in Europe. According to the California New Car Dealers Association, registrations of new Teslas in the state plummeted by 11.6% in 2024 despite the overall sale of electric cars and trucks increasing by 1.2%.

Travis Kelce said Trump at the Super Bowl is a 'great honor' & social media points out the obvious
Travis Kelce is getting side-eyed for recent comments he made about Donald Trump. But is his relationship with Taylor Swift protecting him from genuine backlash? On Tuesday, the White House announced that Trump will be attending the Super Bowl in New Orleans this coming Sunday. Hell be the first sitting president to attend the annual game, so it isnt surprising that various players were asked their thoughts on the matter during subsequent press conferences."Thats awesome. Its a great honor," he said. "I think, no matter who the president is, Im excited because its the biggest game of my life. And having the president there its the best country in the world, and thats pretty cool." (@) There are plenty of people who already bent over backwards trying to find ways to justify Kelces remarks. Theyve suggested he didnt want to jump into political fights, or that he tried to toe the line and not offend anybody. Maybe hes thinking about his bottom line and doesnt want his brand deals or attempts at an acting career jeopardized. And hey, maybe we just shouldnt be asking football players about politics at all! (@) (@) (@) (@) But there are a number of flaws with all of these arguments. To start, Kelce has had no problems wading into topics of public interest in the past when it suits him or his multi-million dollar podcast, anyway. That makes asking him about things that go beyond football fair game because he opened that door. And there really is no such thing as trying to toe the line when it comes an administration that has already targeted essentially everyone other than cis straight white Christian men in the first two weeks of taking power. Declining to condemn the cult of MAGA is an implicit suggestion that everything is business as usual, at best. And calling it an "honor" to be in the presence of their leader, a convicted felon with a litany of sexual assault allegations against him, is pretty disgusting. (@) "Trump ripping apart the foundations of our country but Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce excited to throw a ball in front of him for a couple hours" (@) "'travis kelce isnt a trump supporter' idk if i were a famous person id think a little harder and come up with something other than its a great honor to play for any president when this president is destroying the democratic frameworks of our government." (@) "'travis kelce was media trained and' and the media training needs to shift as the world shifts. the current media training should be nothing less than i denounce donald trump." (@) To be clear, Swifties seem split on the matter. Some are make excuses for Kelce while others are genuinely horrified about his complacency here. But that there is such a notable divide here itself is jarring, considering it was only last year that Trump took to social media to declare, in all caps, "I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT." (@) Swifts fandom is known for swooping down and taking vengeance on any perceived wrongs against her. If it had been Joe Alwyn or Matty Healy who showed an iota of support for someone who went on a tirade against their ex, its difficult to imagine anyone whose online identity revolves around their love of Swift defending them. (@) But because Kelce is Swifts current beau, and because they have so deftly turned themselves into this all-American couple for people to project their own fantasies onto, the Chiefs player seems to have earned some special layer of protection from their wrath. (@) "it's not hard to believe that someone like travis kelce would be a trump supporter but my god stand up for your girl!!!" (@) "The travwives putting community notes onto every piece of journalism which critiques Travis Kelce for supporting Donald Trump is truly embarrassing. What happened to this fandom exactly? Do you actually like Taylor Swift?" (@) "Some of you care more about Travis Kelces image and reputation than minorities who are actively having their lives destroyed by Trump and you should just admit it rather than gaslighting the rest of us that his statement was neutral when it wasnt at all" (@) "imagine that your boyfriend says it's an "honor" to have the man who slanders you publicly and stand for him. oh they would never make me like you" (@) "She really dated one liberal man and went to two conservatives back to back. Loving him is red I guess !" (@) After all, if Taylor is still with him, he must be good, right?Ultimately, Swift isnt responsible for anything that Kelce says, just like Kelces proximity to her shouldnt protect him from the consequences of his own actions. But theres a ripple effect here, just as there has been regarding her friendship with Brittany Mahomes. And when the result is watching a subsection of her fans defend complacency, it is, once again, difficult not to feel disappointed. (@)
