Popular gay DJ founded dead after horrific robbery
Bryan Smith, a DJ and barber well-known in D.C.s LGBTQ+ community, died last week following what police have described as a robbery that left him lying unconscious on the street with severe head injuries.According to The Washington Blade, police confirmed Smiths death last week but were still determining the cause and circumstances. Related A man allegedly vandalized a popular gay bar in DC. He just got arrested. The vandal wrote Kamala = Hitler, Trump > Hitler on a nearby bus stop. Once we have more information, well be putting that out, Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Thomas Lynch said. Subscribe to our Newsletter today According to an October 30 press release from the MPD, at around 5 a.m. on October 27, police responded to a report of a man found unconscious in the 500 block of T Street in Washington, D.C.s Northwest neighborhood. The victim, who was later identified as Smith, was transported to a local hospital. He was later transferred to a hospital in Virginia where he died on November 7.Police said they had determined that Smith was robbed by two suspects while walking in the area, which as the Blade notes is a little over a block away from D.C. gay bar Uproar. They had not, however, determined how Smith sustained his injuries.According to The Advocate, Smith had played a DJ set at the nearby 9:30 Club the night he was attacked. An MPD spokesperson told the outlet that the case is still being investigated as a robbery. There is no indication at this time that hate/bias motivated this offense, they said. The MPD has released video of two suspects and a vehicle believed to be connected with the crime and are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment. While investigator have also linked the two suspects to three other robberies in the early morning hours of October 27, the MPD spokesperson told The Advocate that there was no apparent connection to a recent incident in the area that is being investigated as a potential hate crime. As the Blade notes, hours before Smith was found on October 27, 22-year-old Sebastian Thomas Robles Lascarra, who is also gay, was reportedly attacked at an area McDonalds by 15 men and women. Police arrested a 16-year-old male in connection with that assault on November 5. Dave Perruzza, owner of two LGBTQ+ sports bars in D.C.s Adams Morgan neighborhood, told The Advocate that the recent attacks have raised concerns about queer people walking home alone. We should almost have a buddy system in D.C., Perruzza said, adding that Smith was likely just strolling home, not thinking anything would ever happen.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Why are basic human rights ever put to a vote?
Democrats spend way too much time trying not to offend anyone rather than being brutally honest about the challenges many Americans face, Massachusetts Democratic Representative, Seth Moulton, toldthe New York Times in the wake of Donald Trumps victory.I have two little girls. I dont want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, he continued, but as a Democrat, Im supposed to be afraid to say that. Related Democrats are at each others throats over the role of trans issues in Trumps victory But experts say we can find our way through. Following these remarks, Moultons campaign manager and top advisor, Matt Chilliak, resigned in protest. The School Committee in Salam, Moultons hometown and district, also denounced his comments. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today We are a district whose values are belonging, equity, and opportunity, and we serve all of our students, said state Rep. Manny Cruz (D), the vice-chair of the School Committee.Cruz added, This is not the time to be scapegoating our kids for the failure of national Democratic politics.Scapegoating indeed. In addition to targeting undocumented immigrants for bringing about the ills of the nation, Trump and MAGA Republicans acting within their autocratic divide-and-conquer scapegoating tactics as tyrants do have further weaponized and inflamed fear and hatred toward transgender people.Donald Trump has a long track record of fearmongering defining Mexicans, for example, as rapists, drug and human traffickers, and gang members who engage in high rates of crime on the U.S. side of the border. In the past year alone, the Republican Party spent approximately$215 millionin TV network ads, some of which they broadcast during National Football League games, targeting trans people for posing a threat to womens sports and for consuming taxpayer funds to undergo gender-affirming care while incarcerated. These ads, however, failed to mention that these procedures were also mandated by law during Trumps first term in office.Moulton doubled down on his comments about trans girls in sports even after receiving backlash: I stand firmly in my belief for the need for competitive womens sports to put limits on the participation of those with the unfair physical advantages that come with being born male, he claimed. I am also a strong supporter of the civil rights of all Americans, including transgender rights. I will fight, as I always have, for the rights and safety of all citizens. These two ideas are not mutually exclusive, and we can even disagree on them.Moulton, who retained his House seat unopposed, has contradicted his previous positions on trans rights and trans athletes specifically. First elected to Congress in 2015, he is a member of the Congressional Equality Caucus, which among other issues, promotes LGBTQ+ equality. Previously, Moulton had vigorously supported trans athletes playing on sports teams that best align with their gender identity. The Human Rights Campaign endorsed Moultons 2024 reelection campaign. In both 2022 and 2023, Moulton cosponsored the House Democrats Transgender Bill of Rights, which among other civil rights protections, would assure trans athletes the right to participate on sports teams that align with their gender identity.Moulton voted against a Republican-backed bill to bar transgender student-athletes from sports. Rep. Greg Steubes (R-FL) bill, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, would have changed Title IX to recognize sex as based solely on a persons reproductive biology and genetics at birth. Many questions remain. Do Moultons latest comments against trans athletes in school sports crepresent hypocrisy of the first order? Or has Moulton come to the side of others who are scapegoating trans people for his own political gains and out of concerns for his party?Speaking on the topic of trans people onMSNBC Weekends with Alex Witt, Moulton declared, The Democratic Party is out of touch with the voters:I was speaking authentically as a dad about one of many issues where I think we are out of touch with the majority of voters, he stated. He continued by blaming the progressive wing of the Democratic Party for shaming us and trying to cancel people who even bring up these difficult issues, saying it also shames the voters. He claimed that his party needs to listen to the voters on all these issues that were telling us the truth. But were the voters telling the Democratic Party the truth in their overwhelming support for the Republican Party in the 2024 elections? Or was the electorate broadcasting its biases and hatred of trans people and other marginalized people as a reflection of the Republican Partys fearmongering and scapegoating? Is Moulton being pragmatic in his assessment that support of trans equality is a losing strategy in the current political climate? If he considers this as pragmatic, he must accept the backlash against his statements since he is colluding in a movement to divide and conquer the electorate by placing upon the political alter the human sacrifice of a significant percentage of the population.A more important and urgent critical question must be addressed: Should peoples civil and human rights be able to go up for a vote in the public square, in state and national legislatures, and in the courts all to be decided by the majority? Unfortunately, rather than the basic human rights conceived as automatic in our founding documents, majority rule is tradition in the United States. Legislators and the electorate voted whether to grant voting rights to formerly enslaved males, to all women and to people of First Nations. They voted on who can and cannot marry, who can attend school, and who can hold jobs without discrimination. They voted on bodily autonomy, control of ones reproductive healthcare, and many other rights. In 1790, for example, the newly constituted United States Congress passed theNaturalization Act, which excluded all nonwhites from citizenship, including Asians, enslaved Africans, and Native Americans, the latter whom they defined in oxymoronic terms as domestic foreigners, even though they had inhabited this land for an estimated 35,000 years. The Congress did not grant Native Americans rights of citizenship until 1924 with the passage of the Indian Citizenship Act, though Asians continued to be denied naturalized citizenship status. Alexis de Tocqueville, French political scientist and diplomat, traveled across the United States for nine months between 1831 and1832 conducting research for his epic work,Democracy in America. He was astounded to find a certain paradox: On one hand, he observed that the U.S. promoted itself around the world as a country of We the People, where freedom and tolerance were among its defining tenets. On the other hand, he witnessed profound issues of discrimination and prejudice toward marginalized people. Though he favored U.S.-style democracy, he found its major limitation to be its stifling of independent thought and independent beliefs. A country that promoted the notion that majority rules was effectively silencing minorities by what Tocqueville termed the tyranny of the majority. This is a crucial point because in a democracy, without specific guarantees of minority rights, there is a danger of domination or tyranny over marginalized people. How much longer would the institution of slavery have continued in the United States if it were left to the states to decide by majority vote based on what the voters were telling them was their truth?Would interracial couples be allowed to marry today in all states if it were left to each individual state to decide based on what the voters were telling them was their truth? How much longer must we wait for people nationwide to have the freedom to control their bodily autonomy since the majority of Supreme Court justices took away this right and left it to states to decide based on what the voters tell them is their truth? We must not leave anyone behind on the sacrificial altar, no matter how politically advantageous or pragmatic, no matter what the majority of voters tell us is their truth. Fannie Lou Hamer, the great civil rights leader, wisely stated that nobodys free until everybodys free. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. added: Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. That is the truth.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

25 ruthless reactions to MAGA diehard Rudy Giuliani effing around and finding out
MAGA voters across the country are facing the consequences of their actions as they start to discover what tariffs actually are and realize their own family is blacklisting them, and its no different for Donald Trump ally Rudy Giuliani who fked around and now hes finding out.Today the former Mayor of New York gave up his prized watch collection ahead of the Friday deadline to turn his assets over to the two former Georgia election workers who were the target of Giulianis conspiracy theory that they committed ballot fraud in order to keep Trump from winning in 2020 even though there has never been any evidence that the MAGA leader lost unfairly. Wandrea Shaye Moss and her mother, Ruby Freeman, won $148 million in damages, and despite trying to dodge responsibility, its time for Giuliani to pay up, and now hes whining about it.On Thursday evening, Giulianis spokesperson, Ted Goodman, took to X to post a pathetic video lamenting the loss of the watch collection, even attempting to pull on peoples heartstrings by reminding viewers that his clients ran towards the flames during the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. This right here folks, this is the accumulation of 60 years of hard work, Goodman said while showing the watches. Many of these watches hold great sentimental value and hes being forced to turn all these over under court order. He added, This is a man who demonstrated courage by running towards the flames and now hes being forced to turn all this over under court order in an absolute bastardization of our justice system. (@) Dont try to destabilize democracy and maybe you can keep your ugly watches!Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of MeidasTouch and frequent Trump critic, reposted a clip from the video on X, and the responses were scathing! While there are some Republican loyalists who think the defamation case is an abuse of power (yawn), most people were dunking on Giuliani for landing himself in hot water because he was willing to lie to support Trump.According to AP News, Giuliani must also turn over his 1980 Mercedes-Benz SL 500, his $5 million Upper East Side apartment, and a shirt signed by New York Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio. This comes during the same week when Alex Jones lost his precious Infowars empire to The Onion when the satirical news site bought it at a bankruptcy auction after Jones was ordered to pay the families of the Sandy Hook victims $1.5 billion for spreading harmful conspiracy theories. If youre gonna fk around, you gotta be prepared to find out!Keep scrolling to see the funniest reactions to Giuliani having to hand over his watch collection! Russia passes bill to outlaw adoption by people from countries where gender-affirming care is legal
Russian lawmakers have moved to outlaw adoption by people from countries where gender-affirming care is legal.Russian language outlet Zona Media reports that the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian Federal Assembly, has unanimously approved a bill that would prohibit the adoption of Russian children by citizens of foreign countries where gender transition is allowed. Related Moscow police detained over 50 people in raid on LGBTQ+ venues Cops stormed two Moscow gay clubs following civilian complaints of drag performances and men kissing each other freely. Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin said the bill was aimed at protecting children who cant protect themselves, characterizing the Wests policy towards children as destructive. Global perspectives delivered right to your inbox Our newsletter bridges borders to bring you LGBTQ+ news from around the world. Subscribe to our Newsletter today It is necessary to do everything so that new generations of our citizens grow up oriented toward traditional family values, Volodin wrote in a Telegram post.Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law banning transgender individuals from receiving gender-affirming care, changing their gender in official documents and public records, fostering or adopting children, and legally marrying. But the new bills authors warned that while the Russian state can prevent transgender people from adopting Russian children at the time of adoption and on Russian soil, it cannot stop foreign parents from transitioning or receiving gender-affirming care in their home countries following adoption. Worse, according to the bills authors, adoptive parents can change the gender of the adopted child once safely back in their home country. State Duma deputies noted that the bill is aimed at preventing members of the LGBTQ+ community from adopting Russian children and that it also effectively bans adoption by citizens of NATO member states. The bill, which will have to be signed into law by Putin, is just the latest in Russias ongoing crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights. In 2013, the Russian president signed a law banning so-called LGBTQ+ propaganda in the presence of minors. That same year, Putin signed a law prohibiting adoption of Russian children by same-sex foreign couples whose homeland recognizes their union as marriage, as well as by single people or unmarried couples from those countries. In late 2022, Putin signed a new law expanding the countrys definition of what constitutes LGBTQ+ propaganda to include any promotion of homosexuality in public, online, or in media. The law also bans the demonstration of homosexuality to children. The 2022 law effectively outlaws any public expression of LGBTQ+ life in Russia.Last November, the Russian Supreme Court declared the international LGBT social movement an extremist organization, effectively giving authorities wide latitude to arrest and prosecute members of the LGBTQ+ community. In the year since the courts decree, there have been multiple raids on LGBTQ+ bars and other establishments in cities across Russia, and multiple people have been arrested and charged under the countrys anti-LGBTQ+ laws.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

People are boycotting a popular retailer over a tiny queer moment in its Christmas ad
Right-wing bigots in the U.K. are calling for a boycott of retailer Boots after the health and beauty chain released a holiday ad featuring Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh.Andoh stars in the one-minute spot as a sassy Mrs. Claus who takes over Santas workshop, distributing make-up, fragrances and other beauty supplies with the help of a team of very glamorous elves, including queer influencer William Grande. Theyre trying to appeal to the woke-minority and playing the black-drags card over traditional values, one user wrote, according to The Daily Mail. The @BootsUK Christmas Ad is one of the worst woke adverts Ive seen tbh, another reportedly wrote. The actress stirred controversy among the British right during King Charless 2023 coronation when she said she was struck by the contrast between the rich diversity of the crowd at Westminster Abbey and the terribly white faces of the Royal Family gathered later on the Buckingham Palace balcony. Britain First complained that the Boots ad promotes They/Them transgender pronouns, a concept created by far-left extremist LGBT movements in an attempt to undermine traditional gender norms, biological sex and the traditional Christian family. The party also took issue with the ads depiction of Santa Claus, who is seen sleeping while Andoh and her elves work. Santa Claus is the only heterosexual white man in the whole advert and he is deliberately portrayed as a lazy good-for-nothing.In a statement to The Daily Mail, a Boots spokesperson defended Andohs involvement in the ad, describing her as an incredibly talented British actor. We recognize that people look forward to seeing our Christmas advert each year and will have their own opinions on the creative direction, the Boots spokesperson said. We always strive to create inclusive campaigns and remind viewers that Boots has a gift for every kind of beauty enthusiast. City that placed $10,000 bounty on trans people who use public restrooms makes law even worse
A Texas city infamous for placing a $10,000 bounty on trans people who use bathrooms and locker rooms that do not align with their sex assigned at birth has voted to make its policy even more strict. On Tuesday, the Odessa City Council voted 5-1 to maintain its bathroom ban and allow individual citizens (whether or not they are Odessa or even Texas residents) to sue a trans person for a minimum of $10,000 in damages if they violate it (there is no cap on how large the bounty can be). It also approved an expansion of the law. Once applied only to public facilities, it will now apply to private ones as well. Related Federal court allows Indianas gender-affirming care ban to go into effect The Trump judge argued that trans youth can still do talk therapy so there are still options for treatment for them. You are putting a target on the queer communitys back by offering a reward and taking money out of their pockets, Odessa resident and business owner Bradley Burke told the council during public comments, as reported by Lonestar Live. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The trans community is not a threat to Odessa or anyone in the bathroom, added Matilda Mann-Morales, president of local LGBTQ+ groupOut in West Texas. Were just trying to live out our lives. I dont want the government in the bathroom.Speakers also argued that trans people have not historically posed any risk to people in the bathroom and are instead statistically far more at risk of being abused or harassed while trying to use facilities. Lonestar Live reported that Odessa police have not received any report about public restrooms in three years, and police in several states have said they have been unable to identify any cases of trans people harassing anyone in a public bathroom.A letter from the ACLU of Texas to the Odessa City Council and Mayor Javier Joven, pointed out that the last-minute addition of private facilities in the legislation is a likely violation of the Texas Open Meetings Act because the city did not provide adequate notice to business owners and Odessa residents that the local government was exposing them to immense liability on private property. The letter also pointed out that the proposal to place a bounty of $10,000 per occurrence on anyone using a restroom on private property could bankrupt many businesses and Odessa residents, as well as flood the courts with frivolous lawsuits. The organization also urged the city council to reject the ordinance because it is discriminatory and does not reflect the values of Odessa: Transgender people are part of the fabric of our community, our families, our workplaces, and our neighborhoods. Like everyone else, they are small business owners and homeowners and should be allowed to use their private property without undue government interference. But the sweeping proposed changes affixed to your upcoming council agenda trample on their rights and threaten to create a gender-policing witch hunton both public and private property across the City.In addition to granting the right to sue, the ordinance also invokes criminal penalties for individuals who use bathrooms that align with their gender identity. The provisionstatesthat a person violating the provisions of this ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a Class C misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine not to exceed five hundred dollars and that anyone who refuses to use a bathroom aligned with what the city perceives as their biological sex, even after being asked to leave by a building owner, may be guilty of misdemeanor trespassing. The bounty defines biological sex based on birth certificates, either at the time of birth or corrected if there was a clerical error. This means that any transgender individual who gets their birth certificate updated to reflect their gender identity would still be violating the law if they used bathrooms that align with their gender. This ban lacks any exceptions for disabled people who may be accompanied by a person of a different gender and may open the door to lawsuits targeting anyone who is gender non-conforming.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Donald Trump has insulted us all by nominating Mike Huckabee Ambassador to Israel
An ambassador is defined as an accredited diplomat sent by a country as its official representative to a foreign country. In this regard, what then is a diplomat?a person appointed by a national government to conduct official negotiations and maintain political, economic, and social relations with another country or countries.a person who is tactful and skillful in managing delicate situations, handling people, etc.By naming former Arkansas governor, Baptist Evangelical pastor, former TV host, and former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee as U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Trump has failed to fulfill the spirit and letter of the definitions of both ambassador and diplomat. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Related Donald Trump names anti-LGBTQ+ Rep. Matt Gaetz as the next attorney general Gaetz has referred to LGBTQ+ people as degenerates and will be expected to rubber stamp Trumps agenda and vendettas. Donald Trump insults the Jewish people of Israel and the Palestinian people of the region with his selection of Mike Huckabee. The decision ensures even more instability in an already unstable area of the globe. All ambassadors from the United States must represent the very best of their country to the nations to which they are sent. They are required to be thoughtful and sensitive negotiators serving the best interests of their country and the interest of peaceful coexistence in the world.Mike Huckabee has none of the requisite skills and traits to serve as ambassador to anywhere on this planet, at least anywhere on what we refer to as Earth One. On the Middle EastHuckabee has long rejected the idea and reality of an independent Palestinian state carved from the territory Israel seized following the 1967 war. He has argued for a one-state solution with the Israeli government holding all power. This position contradicts longstanding U.S. policy. He has argued, for example, that the West Bank of the Jordan River belongs to Israel, and he stated emphatically that The title deed was given by God to Abraham and to his heirs.I suppose that Huckabee must have forgotten that Ishmael, the original ancestor of the Arab people, was also Abrahams son and heir.He condemned Israels 2005 withdrawal from Gaza and described the Jewish settlers evacuated by Israeli forces as having been marched at gunpoint. Huckabeestated: I feel that we have a responsibility to respect that this is land that has historically belonged to the Jews.Well, on that score then, what we know today as the Americas is land that has historically belonged to indigenous peoples. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Huckabee would follow his boss Donald Trumps mandate to the Netanyahu government to do what you have to do to wipe out Hamas and Hezbollah, which has already resulted in the deaths of over 45,000 innocent civilians in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.John Bolton, Trumps former national security adviser from 2018 to 2019, said that Trump may give Israel free rein to step up its attacks against Iran, thereby further increasing tensions and the possibility of all-out war.Trump is probably saying [to Israel] do whatever you want before January 20th, said Bolton. White Christian NationalismMike Huckabee describes himself as a conservative Christian Evangelical and supports many of the tenets of Christian nationalism.HistorianAmanda Tylerfrom the Center for American Progress defines Christian nationalism as, a political ideology and cultural framework that seeks to merge American and Christian identities, distorting both the Christian faith and Americas constitutional democracy. Christian nationalism relies on the mythological founding of the United States as a Christian nation, singled out for Gods providence in order to fulfill Gods purposes on earth. Christian nationalism demands a privileged place for Christianity in public life, buttressed by the active support of government at all levels.Anthea Butlerfrom Yale University distinguishes, more specifically, white Christian nationalism: Simply put, it is the belief that Americas founding is based on Christian principles, white protestant Christianity is the operational religion of the land, and that Christianity should be the foundation of how the nation develops its laws, principles and policies. Huckabee has advocated for the teaching of Creationism (reframed as Intelligent Design) in schools to explain the genesis of the world and all its creatures. He has vigorously lobbied for a ban on marriage equality for same-sex couples, opposes abortion except in cases when there is risk to the life of the pregnant person, and is committed to abstinence only sexuality education.Huckabee is also no friend to the Palestinian people. In fact, he oncesaid, There is no such thing as a Palestinian. But let us be clear, Huckabee is not a friend to the Jewish people, either.Huckabee defines himself as a Christian Zionist. Most American Christian Evangelicals and Christian Zionists believe in what they call the rapture in which the end of the world and all creatures will come about by horrific events in the Middle East. At that time, primarily all Christians, living and dead, will be resurrected and delivered through the clouds into heaven to meet their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the Second Coming. Believers will be given new bodies that God had intended before they sinned.Jews, Muslims, and all other people will be left behind to face the Tribulation: an extended period of inflicted wrath with great suffering. So, by joining Trumps advisors, ambassadors, and cabinet, Mike Huckabee accepts his mandate to follow through on his boss patriarchal Christian white supremacist legacy of death and deception along his march to autocracy.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Texas still has a law banning gay sex. Democrats are fighting to change that.
Texas law still technically bans gay sex, and Democrats in the state have filed two bills to change that in the upcoming legislative session, the Hill reports. The law has not been enforceable since the Supreme Courts landmark 2003 decision in Lawrence v. Texas, but it remains on the books as a misdemeanor with a $500 fine and defines gay sex as deviate sexual intercourse with another individual of the same sex. Joe Moody (D) and state Sen. Jos Menndez (D) filed the bills on the first day they were allowed to do so for the upcoming legislative session. In addition to repealing the ban, the bills call for Texas law to no longer require education materials for minors to state that homosexuality is not an acceptable lifestyle. This sentiment is also echoed in the Texas GOPs official platform, which states that homosexuality is an abnormal lifestyle choice and also states opposition to all efforts to validate transgender identity. Among the bills filed were also several targeting the LGBTQ+ community, including a trans bathroom ban and one seeking to end all legal recognition of trans identities.Texas has been at the center of the GOPs crusade against LGBTQ+ rights and especially trans rights over the past several years. Gov. Greg Abbott (R) and Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) have been particularly vicious in their efforts to rip rights away from trans kids and brand gender-affirming parents as abusers. In April, Paxton announced he was suing the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) over new Title IX guidelines that make discrimination against LGBTQ+ students in education illegal, vying for the right to discriminate against vulnerable kids. Denzel Washington says his same-sex kiss was cut from Gladiator II
Director Ridley Scotts Gladiator II may be set in ancient Rome, which was relatively tolerant of certain forms of same-sex relationships, but dont expect to see much queer smooching in the film.In fact, according to star Denzel Washington, a scene in which his character kisses another man was cut from the film. Lesbian whines about losing friends after voting for Donald Trump
The queer people have turned their backs on me, and Im queer, so its very painful, LA resident Tanya Tsikanovsky told LA Fox affiliate KMSP over the weekend as she complained about how being a supporter of Donald Trump has meant losing friends in the LGBTQ+ community.Tsikanovsky said that she wasnt always a Republican. In fact, she voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020. She worked in Iowa with Clintons campaign, and she said that she really didnt like Trump supporters at the time. She said that she changed her partisanship after campus protests against the Israeli governments war on Gaza, which she called appalling. They should have sent in the National Guard as soon as Jewish students were being blocked on campuses, she said. That was enough to get her to become a vocal Trump supporter, something that cost her friends right away.I had like 50 unfollows right away, she said about the first time she discussed her support for Trump on Instagram. Tsikanovsky said that she lost friends on her queer basketball team and longtime friends have turned their backs on her for supporting the extremely anti-LGBTQ+ presidential candidate. Ever since I publicly said I was voting for Trump, I am no longer welcome in the [LGBTQ+] social spheres they provide, she complained. If there was a birthday party I was invited to, Im no longer able to attend.I think its disgusting someone can push me out of something [like this]. They liked me two weeks ago, and now they dont, just because I voted for someone.I definitely feel like Im on an island alone.Tsikanovsky accused LGBTQ+ people of being too worried about Trumps second term. After all, Trump was already president once and it didnt affect her personally.I was a lesbian under the Trump presidency before and my rights havent changed, she said. Im not all of a sudden anti-gay now because I voted for Trump, she said. I want to bring humanity to this. The only way we can come together is if we sit together and have hard talks.Exit polls which are a far-from-perfect tool for analyzing voter behavior showed overwhelming support for Kamala Harris among LGBTQ+ people in this election. They found that 86% of LGBTQ+ people voted Harris and just 13% voted for Trump. In 2020, post-election polling showed even greater support for Biden than exit polling did among LGBTQ+ people, but such polls have not been released yet in 2024.The same early exit poll results show that 79% of Jewish Americans voted for Harris. Donald Trumps Cabinet picks are a prelude to his consolidating power in his hands alone
Its hard to imagine that the day would come where we would be relieved to see Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) in a presidential Cabinet. But as Donald Trumps choice for secretary of state, Rubio is one of the few conventional nominees for Trumps second term. Most of the names that Trump has announced are an assortment of unqualified, flame-throwing crackpots whose chief qualification is that they will do whatever Trump tells them to do. Of course, that was the plan all along. Trump made it abundantly clear that he would not make the same mistake he did in this first term, when establishment Republicans restrained him from carrying out his worst impulses. Last month, he told podcaster Joe Rogan that hiring disloyal people back then was his biggest mistake. Related Elise Stefanik, Donald Trumps new pick for UN envoy, supports his attacks on trans people She has previously referred to Democrats as pedo grifters. The result is that we are seeing people like Pete Hegseth, a Fox News talking head, being named secretary of defense. Hegseth, a veteran with little leadership experience and none in running a large organization, is best known for complaining that the military is too woke. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Or theres Tulsi Gabbard. Gabbard is an erstwhile Democrat who pretended to be a liberal in her failed 2020 presidential bid but quickly reverted to her anti-LGBTQ+ past. (The fruit doesnt fall far from the tree; her father was the leading opponent of marriage equality in Hawaii.) Gabbard, who parrots Russian talking points, is proposed as director of national intelligence. Or theres Matt Gaetz, who resembles a frat boy gone to seed, and who apparently behaves exactly that way. Gaetz gleefully ousted Kevin McCarthy as House speaker mostly because he could. He is also under investigation for sex trafficking underaged girls, which clearly makes him the obvious choice for attorney general, the nations top law enforcement job. Or Robert Kennedy Jr., an anti-vax, anti-trans, AIDS denialist, as head of the Department of Health and Human Services. Most of the attention has been on just how exquisitely unqualified these candidates have been. They are charlatans and crackpots, but in that sense, they are a reflection of their would-be boss. But the bigger issue is what Trump is doing by nominating them. Remember when Trump said he would be a dictator on Day One? It turns out, hes not waiting that long. The nominations are power moves meant to make it clear that Trump, and Trump alone, will be calling the shots this time. He is daring the Republican-controlled Senate to refuse to confirm his choices. Even the spineless majority there is having a hard time swallowing this buffet of incompetence. Moreover, its not just that Trump is picking inept toadies, just like a dictator would. He also wants to upend the process that applies to his nominees as well, circumventing the rules. For one, Trump is pressuring the Senate to allow him to make recess appointments. Recess appointments allow the president to appoint someone to a position for a year if the Senate is not in session, even though the position normally requires Senate approval. In the past, presidents have used recess appointments sparingly for lower-level positions, generally after a nominee has been in limbo due to partisan concerns. Trump wants to make wholesale use of this loophole. Hes asking Senate Republicans to let him use recess appointments for anyone he wants. This would spare people like Gaetz the humiliation of having details of his extracurricular activities made the focus of a public hearing. Spineless Republicans may well let Trump have his way. In doing so, they will be abrogating their responsibility to confirm key officials. Moreover, give Trump an inch, and he will take a mile. Does anyone rightly believe that he would let his appointees go after a year simply because thats the way its supposed to work? Just as bad, Trump is looking to outsource background checks on his sleazy appointees and have them forgo security clearances altogether. That would mean that, like Trump, his acolytes could have all kinds of inappropriate, perhaps dangerous relationships with foreign governments, like Russia, and still have access to the nations top secrets. The policy changes that will come with the Trump administration will be horrendous. The Cabinet choices confirm that. But what we are seeing with how Trump is pushing his nominees through is even more dangerous. He is already chipping away at the safeguards that underlie democracy. He is concentrating power in his hands, and he is testing limits, knowing that he will test them even further. Trump isnt even in office yet, but hes already well on his way to damaging our democracy. Trans people are entering a new chapter of resistance. We are ready.
Many of us have watched with alarm as trans people have been increasingly targeted by extremists culminating in Donald Trumps hateful presidential campaign. Trans people deserve full, authentic, and healthy lives, not to be attacked by anti-trans politicians who are trying to distract and divide us. Now, we are entering a new chapter of resistance, and we are ready. Having already lived through a Trump presidency, we know firsthand the devastating impact a second term could have on our rights, our safety, and our future. Many in the LGBTQ+ community, particularly trans people and their families, are understandably feeling fear and uncertainty about what lies ahead. Related Donald Trump wants to dim trans peoples light. We cant let him. People need our stories. Get out there and tell yours. However, we want to make it clear: you are not alone. We are in this together. As a community, we stand united in this fight. Earlier this year, two trans-led organizations, the National Center for Trans Equality and the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund, merged to form Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE), a unified force dedicated to building the power, strength, and resilience we need for the long haul. Allied politicians who stand with us are deeply committed to upholding human dignity, ensuring equitable healthcare access, and fighting against discrimination. Grief is a process, and its okay to feel anger, fear, or sadness. There is no rush to find closure or make big decisions. But even in the face of difficulty, it is essential to remember our wins. This year, Sarah McBride (D-DE) made history as the first openly trans member of Congress. Emma Curtis, an A4TE-endorsed candidate, became the first openly trans elected official in Kentucky when voters selected her for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council. And across several states including Arizona, Missouri, and Montana abortion rights have been enshrined in state constitutions. These victories are proof that even in the face of challenges, we are part of a movement that is growing stronger, more united, and more determined. This is why A4TE merged: to build the power necessary to weather storms like this one. Weve prepared for this possibility. Weve developed contingency plans. Transition-related healthcare has been studied for over four decades and is supported by every leading medical association. And the research is clear: the harmful narratives being pushed are taking a direct toll on the physical, mental, and emotional health of trans people.By targeting the trans community and denying us the right to live safe, healthy, and authentic lives, these politicians are distracting from the real issues facing all Americans issues like underfunded schools, rising costs of living, and the climate crisis. Every person, including trans people, deserves the opportunity to live authentically, to be healthy, and to be supported in their identity. Our mission has never been more vital. Not only for trans people but for the broader LGBTQ+ community. The stakes are higher than ever before. We will fight. We will organize, testify, march, and protect each other. Weve faced repression before when regressive forces tried to control us. But each generation has fought back and now, its our turn to pick up the baton. We will stand firm for our freedoms, for our families, and for our futures. The arc of history is long, and a second Trump presidency is just one chapter in that story. It is not the whole book. Jen Psaki warns Democrats not to cave to the right on trans rights
MSNBC host and former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki warned Democrats not to give in to the right-wing fearmongering over trans issues in the wake of Donald Trumps victory. Its important not to yield to manufactured panic and to align with the actual facts before making sweeping claims, she told viewers on an episode of Inside with Jen Psaki. Related Dems stand up for trans people amid election loss blame game One activist cautioned that anyone abandoning trans folks will wear that decision like an albatross around their neck. Democrats have been at each others throats over the role of trans issues in Trumps victory. While exit polls have indicated that inflation and an unpopular incumbent president both doomed Kamala Harris 107-day run for president, some Democrats are blaming their partys embrace of transgender people for Harris loss. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Psaki said Republicansinvested about $215 millioninto airinganti-trans TV adsthat repeated claims about Democrats wanting boys to play girls sports and supporting taxpayer-funded gender-affirming surgeries for inmates. One ad aired repeatedly during football games to reach male voters and suburban women showed pictures of Harris next to a drag queen, a trans woman, and a nonbinary person; and ended with the tagline, Kamala is for they/them. President Trump is for you.Psaki said Harriss loss means the Democrats absolutely need to do some soul searching but cautioned the party not to reach the wrong sweeping conclusions when it comes to trans people. Echoing and adopting the panic from the other side is not leading, she said. Its not meeting people where they are. Its simply falling prey to right-wing propaganda without checking the facts first. She explained the GOPs fearmongering over Harriss support for providing gender-affirming care to inmates is a particularly obscure issue that applies to a tiny group of people and was also a policy that existed during Trumps first term as president. She also said the GOP has completely manufactured the idea that there is some sort of national crisis around trans youth and sports. The anti-trans ads created this perception that the issues of trans kids playing sports was dominating schools across the country, she said, Which is completely false. When I say few examples, I mean that if you count the examples of transgender girls playing youth sports in any single state, the number often rounds to zero. Utah, for example, passed an anti-trans sports ban in 2022, when there was one single trans kid in the state playing youth sports. She also cited South Dakota, which passed a ban the same year, despite how only one trans girl had competed in high school sports in the state since 2013. Psaki then pointed out that when these bills became pervasive in 2021, lawmakers in more than 20 states could not name a single instance in their state or region where trans athletes were causing a problem.Psaki brought up comments made by Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA), who recently blasted Democrats for being too supportive of trans rights.Democrats spend way too much time trying not to offend anyone rather than being brutally honest about the challenges many Americans face, Moulton said. I have two little girls, I dont want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, but as a Democrat Im supposed to be afraid to say that. Moulton later doubled down, telling CNN, that he may not have used exactly the right words but was speaking authentically as a parent about one of many issues where Democrats are just out of touch with the majority of Americans. We try to cancel people rather than actually having debates about issues that Americans care about, he said.Psaki responded to this mindset by acknowledging that reflection is good but that this issue is simply not worthy of debate because trans youth are not actually causing any problems around the country. She also added that when we do see examples of trans kids on sports teams, there isnt evidence those kids are a threat to safety or fairness. Yet the noise on this issue has been constant, she continued, and according to Donald Trump that is on purpose. She played a 2023 clip in which Trump essentially told a crowd that the GOP plays up trans issues because they seem to rile people up. Its amazing how strongly people feel about that. You see, Im talking about cutting taxes, people go like that, Trump said, clapping weakly. I talk about transgender, everyone goes crazy. Who would have thought? Five years ago, you didnt know what the hell it was! he said, calling out the Republican base for making up an issue to be mad about.Psaki explained, Donald Trump and the Republicans have managed to amplify their bad faith attacks to the point where people do have concerns, as misguided those concerns may be, so this is a good time for democrats to self-reflect about what went wrong and what to do better moving forward.Trans advocates have also been telling Democrats not to blame trans people for the elections results. Please do not blame trans issues or trans people for why we lost, Sam Alleman, the Harris campaigns LGBTQ-engagement director, wrote on social media. Trans folks have been and are going to be a primary target of Project 2025 and need us to have their backs now more than ever.Out Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT)said, No, were not going to abandon our support of all Americans, including our trans friends and neighbors and family members. Absolutely not. Instead, Balint said that Democrats should work on strengthening their coalition of voters. Brad Pritchett, the interim chief executive of LGBTQ+ advocacy group Equality Texas, cautioned, This is something that Democrats need to stop and remember what their values are. We live and run campaigns by the values we hold dear.He also noted that NBC News exit polls showed that 86% of LGBTQ+ voters supported Harris and that Democrats shouldnt be alienating some of their most loyal supporters.MSNBC columnist Hayes Brown noted that Democrats only spent $9 million to refute the GOPs anti-trans attacks, rebuffing the idea that Democrats lost for embracing trans issues too tightly. Brown noted thatnumerous trans and nonbinary candidates won historic races on Election Day, rebuffing the idea that voters are transphobic.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Hes a joy to have around the facility and its not typically how he operates. 11 major myths about lesbian bed death debunked
Don't panic if it's been a while. Most of us have heard about the much-feared Lesbian Bed Death, that moment in time where lesbians and queer women in relationships suddenly stop having sex and start being cuddly, BFFs. Its something a lot of us freak out about when we go a few days or a week or even a month without sex. It looms in the distance, the thing that may or may not be real, but that sure does feel real when were panicking about it.Regardless of how you feel about LBD, there are definitely a few things that need to be debunked about it. So what are the most major and most ridiculous myths out there?1. As soon as you stop having sex, you have to start freaking out about LBD.So the myth goes that as soon as youre not having sex, its time to panic. Why? Because youre suffering from Lesbian Bed Death. But just because youre in a slower time in terms of how often youre having sex doesnt mean that you have something to worry about.2. Less sex means your relationship is suffering.Despite what the hypersexual media will tell you, not everyone is having sex 24/7. Not even queer women! Were allowed to take a pause and to have something else become the center of our relationship. Its okay and it doesnt mean youre at a low point in your relationship.3. Less sex means your partner is cheating on you. This is a tricky one because for many of us the moment theres less sex in our relationships, we jump to conclusions. One super common thought is that less sex means your partner must be getting it elsewhere, so if youre in a monogamous or exclusive relationship that must mean shes cheating on you. But maybe shes just plain ol not feeling it. Its up to you to discuss this with your partner(s). Otherwise, youre freaking out over something that may not even be relevant.4. Cuddling too much will kill your sex life.Again, lesbians are hypersexualized to no end. We dont exactly see many romantic portrayals of lesbians that dont revolve around having sex constantly, and cuddling is practically a joke mean to demean queer relationships as lesser. But cuddling is fun! Its sweet. And if youre into it, sometimes more than youre into sex, it doesnt mean anything is wrong. You can be big cuddlers and have super great sex. The two arent mutually exclusive.5. It means your relationship is doomed. So youre convinced that youre going through LBD. Its okay. Seriously. Having less sex than you did when sparks were flying and everything was passion all the time doesnt mean your relationship is over. Youre not doomed. Things are just changing.6. Strong couples never go through sexless periods. The idea that a strong, healthy couple is always made up of two super thrilled individuals who want to have sex all the time simply isnt realistic. There are highs and lows in any relationship, and as long as those lows are never too low, you have no reason to freak out. Its really okay to have a period of time where sex just isnt what your relationship is all about.7. Asking for help is a no-no.When it comes to sex, looking into resources and asking for help, whether it be from a sex therapist or your best friend, is a yes-yes. If you cant figure it out together, enlist the help of someone who can!8. Theres only one way to have sex.Maybe youre not having sex the way you used to. But maybe your kisses are sweeter than they used to be, or youre really getting into X where you used to do Y. If you find yourself just having sex differently than you used to, it may be time to re-define your understanding of sex so that, for example, what once was foreplay is the main event. It may just be that your sex lives are changing and growing, and thats totally great! There are so many different ways to have sex, and only you can define sex for yourself.9. Youre officially a stereotype.Because of the marginalization faced by lesbians and other queer women, sometimes the pressure to not be a stereotype is way too intense. You get a cat and feel guilty. You wear a flannel and feel guilty. You go through LBD and feel guilty. But youre not a stereotype. Youre people in a relationship, and if your relationship is mimicking something that happens in other relationships, all it means is that you have more people to go to for advice.10. Its someones fault. When people in a sexual relationship stop having sex, its all too easy to point fingers. At each other. At work. At other people. But sometimes youre just on a new medication that takes down your sex drive, or youre just way too tired, or you just really dont feel like it. You dont need an excuse to choose not to have sex, and you dont need an excuse for being in a relationship that is sexless, temporarily or permanently. As long as you feel happy, loved, and cared for in your relationship, theres no one out there you have to impress with scandalous tales of what goes on in your bedroom.11. It means you have to break up.How you choose to handle a period of less or no sex is your call, point blank. Maybe youll choose to see a sex therapist. Maybe youll try new ways of having sex. Maybe you will break up. But the most important thing here is that youre doing whats right for you, and if you love each other, are invested in your relationship, and dont have any interest in breaking up, maybe ending things just isnt in the cards for your relationship. Only you can make the decision.

This Neo-Nazi stabbed a gay man 28 times until he died. Hes going away for life.
A member of a neo-Nazi group whose computer was filled with anti-gay and anti-Jewish propaganda was sentenced to life in prison Friday for the brutal stabbing death of a gay and Jewish former high school classmate.A California judge sentenced Samuel Lincoln Woodward, 26, of Newport Beach to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a jury in July found him guilty of first-degree murder with a hate crime enhancement in the death of Blaze Bernstein, who was 19 at the time of his death and home from college on winter break in 2018. Related Jury finds killer of Blaze Bernstein guilty of murder and a hate crime Spectators of the trial cheered as Woodward was convicted Judge Kimberly Menninger said Woodward, then 21, was driven by pure hate and rage due to the victims sexual orientation and religious beliefs. She characterized the two former schoolmates as on opposite ends of a culture war. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Woodward reconnected with Bernstein on a gay dating app and arranged to meet while he was in town during the holiday break in January. The University of Pennsylvania student met up with Woodward in a public park, where prosecutors say Woodward stabbed the young man 28 times and buried him in a shallow grave.Bernsteins parents reported him missing the next day and went through his online activity in search of clues. They discovered hed been in touch with Woodward, a former classmate at Orange County School of the Arts, a middle school and high school in Santa Ana.Woodward told the Bernsteins that he had met up with their son but that he had walked off into the park with an unknown person and he never saw him again, the district attorneys office said.Bernsteins mutilated body was found in the park a week later after it was exposed during heavy rains. The students blood was discovered on a skull mask in Woodwards possession linked to the neo-Nazi group Atomwaffen, whom Woodward had pledged allegiance to. The nihilist groups stated aim is to use violence to bring about the collapse of society and government. In the three-week trial in July, Woodwards attorney argued the killing was a spontaneous, irrational act, and Woodward testified feeling anger like nothing I had ever felt in my whole life, leading him to just keep driving and driving and driving the knife down. Asked if he remembered how many times he stabbed Bernstein, Woodward responded, No.Woodward claimed in the same testimony that he had been provoked to stab Bernstein when he allegedly took a photo of Woodwards genitals. Woodward also claimed that he had smoked cannabis at the park and was in a haze when his discovered Bernstein was touching him.At the sentencing, prosecutors reminded the judge that Woodward was a former Eagle Scout hoping to impress Atomwaffen with the murder and prove he wasnt gay.Bernsteins mother said at the sentencing she was haunted by the thought that her son was made to die looking at an Atomwaffen mask.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Lily-Rose Depp breaks her silence on her relationship with girlfriend 070 Shake
It looks like things couldnt be going any better for Lily-Rose Depp and her girlfriend, rapper 070 Shake (real name Danielle Balbuena), and we're over the moon to hear it!In case this is new to you (because the two are pretty private,) about a year and a half ago, Depp went Instagram official with her boo announcing the two of them had, at that time, been together for about four months.See on InstagramNow, in an exclusive interview with E! News, Depp said that these days, about two years in, the two were still going strong. Its that kind of je ne sais quoi, she said during her interview on the red carpet ahead of the 15th annual Governors Awards on November 17. You cant describe that kind of feeling. Im very happy. When pressed further, Depp said that one of the key aspects to their relationship was supporting each others careers, as evidenced by Depps appearance in Shakes music video for Winter Baby/New Jersey Blues back in October and continued support of her most recent album, Petrichor.Depp, whos the daughter of actor Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis and has made her own name for herself in HBOs The Idol, admitted in her interview that theres not enough time in these interviews to really sum [how they feel about each other] up, but said that shes incredibly proud of Shake and that shes incredibly talented.Although the two have chronicled little bits and pieces of their relationship over the last year and a half or so, theyve largely kept their relationship privatewhich is probably a good idea considering how wild relationships can be when theyre under the public eye.See on InstagramDepp previously addressed her value on privacy during an appearance in 2021 on The Drew Barrymore Show, where she said, Growing up in a family like I did, it was always something that wasI always learned the importance of privacy and valuing that and keeping things just for yourself. • Jinkx Monsoon and BenDeLaCreme on Their New Holiday Show & Allyship During the Holidays
The Trevor Project caught up with Jinkx Monsoon and BenDeLaCreme at the start of The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show tour. The award-winning musical comedy is back with a new show in its seventh year, and will stop in 33 North American cities this November and December. Along the way, the duo will encourage fans to donate and support The Trevor Projects life-saving work. This isnt their first time on stage or in front of the camera. Jinkx won RuPauls Drag Race season five and RuPauls Drag Race All Stars season seven the first All Winners season of Drag Race. She made her broadway debut in Chicago and became the first ever drag queen to be in a major broadway musical. Jinkx also starred in Little Shop of Horrors as Audrey and played Maestro in Doctor Who.BenDeLaCreme competed on RuPauls Drag Race season six and RuPauls Drag Race All Stars season three. DeLa created and toured a number of solo shows Committed, Terminally Delightful, Inferno A-Go-Go and Cosmos. Both queens have a history of supporting The Trevor Project and protecting LGBTQ+ young people.Huge congratulations on the return of The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show! What inspired you both to create this humorous and entertaining show, and how does it stand out from other holiday performances?Jinkx: I think what inspired us most is that we really like working together. We worked together for many years before we started The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show, but this show was us deciding, Lets go into this as partners, and create something new between the two of us. It was our first project like that. And us being who we are, we decided that it also has to be meaningful and impactful to our audiences, and that we would write a new show every year. Seven years later, I think thats why were here now.DeLa: Exactly. I had been creating and performing holiday shows in Seattle for a while before Jinkx and I started doing this together, and for me, it had always been about making a queer reclamation of the holidays. It can be a hard time of year for a lot of people, but especially the queer community, as a lot of us can feel alienated by themes of family and homecoming. So, when it felt like it was time to put something really big together with my drag sister, it was really cool to be able to carry that message in, have her really resonate with it, and us be able to elevate it on a much larger level.Touring can be grueling both mentally and physically demanding. While you are on tour, how do you both prioritize your mental health and self-care during a busy schedule?DeLa: Well the first week or two on the road is the craziest because were still in a creation process doing previews, and then adjusting to the rhythm of living on a tour bus and performing every night. But once we get through that first part, I would say that my self care is making sure I sleep in until at least noon on the tour bus any given day, and then I roll-in to the venue. Somebody hands me a coffee, I put on my makeup, and we do a show and meet-and-greet after. And then of course being with our tour familywho really mean a lot to usgives both of us so much energy to move forward, because this whole cast and crew also believes in this project. Jinkx is the opposite thoughshe wakes up at dawn! [laughs]Jinkx: On tour I have a couple mantras, like one day at a time and tour life. I have to say tour life a lot, because you have to do certain things you wouldnt normally do staying in one place. Youre gonna sleep weird hours, youre gonna eat weird food. Youre gonna be hungry for the weirdest shit at the weirdest times. And you just have to just say to yourself tour life! You got to give yourself permission to be just a little bit indulgent when you find the time, because you got to give yourself rewards for the hard work youre doing. I do that with video games.DeLa: Yeah, tour life is like being pregnant but seven months shorter. At The Trevor Project, we know the holidays can be a particularly hard time for LGBTQ+ young people. How do you believe humor can help us get through tougher times and provide a sense of support?Jinkx: I think the queer community, and drag queens in particular, are especially apt for turning trauma into comedy. I think its a survival mechanism and a coping mechanism that a lot of us have formed after years of generational queer trauma. Not everyone handles life in that way, but since some of us do, it is a very cathartic way to address some very, very heavy issues in a non-threatening, non-aggressive, accessible way.DeLa: Yeah, humor is such a deep and guttural emotion. So when we are able to make people laugh, I think that its healing for both us as artists and our audiences on a major level. Laughter brings down our walls, and when we can take those walls down, it allows us to dig into our deeper feelings.Jinkx: Yes, exactly. What did that one witch say? A spoonful of sugar. How can allies show up and support young people around the holiday season?Jinkx: Alright, allies, number one thing is: its not about you. If you want to be an ally, remove yourself from the center of the conversation. Thats step one. Then, look at what that person needs and just be present for them. Sometimes we just need someone to hear us and know that were seen and that youll stand up for us when we need it.Also I want to speak to the parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents who want to be allies to the queer children in their life this time of year. I know from firsthand experience as a visibly queer child that there was always a conversation about gift giving. Its like, do you get them the present they want, or do you get them the present thats socially acceptable? All I say in those moments is just really think about what the kid is feeling in that moment, and what the kid is thinking and all of their anxieties and insecurities around what gifts theyre gonna get. When I was a kid, I cant tell you how many stars were named after mebefore video games were finally a thingbecause no one knew what to get me. Just ask the kid.DeLa: Yeah, I think everything Jinkx says is absolutely right. Queer kids just want to be seen for who they really are, and they dont want it to be like a ticker tape parade. They just want to get the same recognition everyone else gets. So, dont make some huge production out of their differences. Just let their differences be part of the way that we all are coexisting.Do you have any words of affirmation for young LGBTQ+ people as they head into the holidays?DeLa: All the things that other people make you feel different and strange about now are your superpowers. And they will continue to be throughout your life. So just remember that right now youre a young person. Being young is finite, that moment where you dont necessarily have options about your location or the company you keep, but you will have those options one day. And if youre not celebrated now, you are going to be. If you just really, really know that we are out there waiting for you. Were here and were ready to lift you up and be a family with you.The post Jinkx Monsoon and BenDeLaCreme on Their New Holiday Show & Allyship During the Holidays appeared first on The Trevor Project.

Donald Trump names Project 2025 author to oversee the internet & media
President-elect Donald Trump has named Brendan Carr as his pick for chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the agency that oversees radio, television, and digital telecommunications. Carr could help further Trumps goals of persecuting broadcasters who have been unfair to him and ending net neutrality.Carr, who is one of the FCCs five current commissioners, also authored the Heritage Foundations Project 2025 plan for Trumps second administration. In it, Carr wrote that he wanted to ban the video-sharing app TikTok and other Chinese tech firms, prevent social media companies from censoring conservative content, allow billionaire transphobe Elon Musk and other U.S.-based investors to develop Earth- and space-based internet infrastructure, and eliminate outdated FCC regulations and spending policies involving private businesses. Related Trump wanted to use the feds to punish SNL for mocking him Trump wanted to pursue action through the Federal Communications Commission, the courts, or even the Department of Justice. [Carr] was the FCCs General Counsel, Trump wrote in his recent announcement. I first nominated Commissioner Carr to the FCC in 2017, and he has been confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate three times. His current term runs through 2029 Carr is a warrior for Free Speech, and has fought against the regulatory Lawfare that has stifled Americans Freedoms, and held back our Economy. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Its worth noting that President Joe Biden also nominated Carr to continue serving on the commission in May 2023. In his time on the Commission, Carr has focused on expanding affordable, high-speed Internet service to all Americans. Carr also leads a groundbreaking telehealth initiative at the FCC, the Connected Care Pilot Program, which supports the delivery of high-quality care to low-income Americans and veterans, the White House wrote in an announcement about Carrs nomination at the time.Over the past year, Carr has expressed support for ending all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts at the FCC; targeting the Facebook, Google, Apple, and Microsoft censorship cartel as well as fact-checking organizations like the Orwellian named NewsGuard; said that NBC should be disciplined for allowing then-presidential nominee Kamala Harris to appear in a Saturday Night Live comedy sketch in early November. In a late October post, the tech policy blog Techdirt accused Carr of deliberately mismanaging the FCCs Rural Digital Opportunity Fund, a $20 billion fund to improve internet access in rural areas in order to reduce competition against large telecommunication companies. The blog said that Carr has since pinned the programs failures on Biden rather than admitting his own fault. The FCC just ordered every broadcaster to start posting a race & gender scorecard that breaks down the demographics of their workforce.Activists lobbied for this b/c they want to see businesses pressured into hiring people based on their race & gender.Courts have already pic.twitter.com/4Mvb2sLMKj Brendan Carr (@BrendanCarrFCC) February 22, 2024Right now, the FCCs bipartisan five-member commission leans Democratic with a 3-2 majority under Biden. Next year, Trump will appoint a new commissioner, inevitably giving it a Republican majority. The international law firm of Perkins Cole wrote that Trump will swiftly use the FCC to overturn Bidensorderto reinstate net neutrality, the principle that internet service providers must provide equal access to all websites and content providers without throttling connectivity or providing quicker traffic to those websites that pay for it.Carr hasvotedto end net neutrality in 2017, saying the decision to end it marked a great day for consumers, for innovation, and for freedom.Trumps FCC could also seek to overturn a new rule that would require disclosure of the use of AI-generated content in political advertisements. Trump shared AI-generated content during his re-election campaign, including an image that falsely made it seem as if pop star and LGBTQ+ ally Taylor Swift supported his campaign. Swift endorsed Trumps opponent during the campaign. Criticizing Trumps selection of Carr as FCC chair, Craig Aaron, the co-CEO of the media watchdog advocacy group Free Press Action, wrote, Brendan Carr has been campaigning for this job with promises to do the bidding of Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Carr doesnt care about protecting the public interest; he got this job because he will carry out Trump and Musks personal vendettas. While styling himself as a free-speech champion, Carr refused to stand up when Trump threatened to take away the broadcast licenses of TV stations for daring to fact check him during the campaign. This alone should be disqualifying, Aaron added. The public needs a watchdog looking out for them at this independent agency, not an attack dog for Trump and Musk.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Watch lesbian who proudly voted MAGA lament over learning actions have consequences #FAFO
"The queer people have turned their back on me, and I'm queer, so that's very painful," said Tanya Tsikanovsky to LA Fox affiliate KMSP about the response she's gotten to recently coming out as a Trump supporter."I had like 50 unfollows right away," said Tsikanovsky about the first time she publicly posted about supporting Donald Trump on Instagram. As shocking as the response was to Tsikanovsky, it was also a shock to her friends and family. Tsikanovsky had been a lifelong Democrat. She had voted for Joe Biden in 2020, and even worked on the Clinton campaign in Iowa back in 2016.Tsikanovsky said that up until recently, she was "absolutely that person who would say, 'If you're a Trump supporter, I don't want you in my life.'" Adding that "she regrets it" That regret probably stems from Tsikanovsky now being a Trump supporter herself and experiencing the consequences of her actions. With all due respect... boo hoo.See on InstagramSince voting for Trump, Tsikanovsky has noticed that she now feels unwelcome in many of the queer social environments she once inhabited, like her queer basketball team. I think its disgusting someone can push me out of something [like this]. They liked me two weeks ago, and now they dont, just because I voted for someone," Tsikanovsky complained. The impacts of her vote have been immediate. "Ever since I publicly said I was voting for Trump, I am no longer welcome in the [LGBTQ+] social spheres they provide. If there was a birthday party I was invited to, Im no longer able to attend," she said.Tsikanovsky is failing to understand why so many people are choosing not to associate with her because she voted for Trump. Im not all of a sudden anti-gay now because I voted for Trump, she said. Just a theory, but people may not want to associate with her because voting for a candidate is one way of expressing one's values and morals. Voting for a candidate who is very openly anti-LGBTQ+ might make it seem like you, even if you are a gay person, are anti-LGBTQ+. Again, just a theory.Tsikanovsky's very nearsighted and self-serving statement that "I was a lesbian under the Trump presidency before and my rights havent changed" might also give some insight into why other LGBTQ+ people don't want to associate with her. So what was the deciding factor for Tsikanovsky this election? "Israel," she said.See on InstagramTsikanovsky describes herself as "highly lesbian" and "highly Zionist" in her Instagram bio, but not necessarily in that order. It was the Trump campaign's unrepentant support of Israel's ongoing genocide against Palestine and the Palestinian people that turn this former Clinton campaigner into a Republican. She said that it was the pro-Palestinian protests against genocide held on college campuses across the US this year that convinced her to support such a firmly anti-LGBTQ+ candidate. She said of the protests, "What was happening on college campuses was appalling.""I want to bring humanity to this. The only way we can come together is if we sit together and have hard talks," said Tsikanovsky. However, until she's ready to sit and have the hard talk about how antisemitism and anti-Zionism are different things entirely, or how just because she claims that her life as a lesbian didn't change under Trump's first doesn't mean other queer people aren't at a severely heightened risk then and now, her pursuit of humanity will continue to ring hollow. You can watch Tsikanovsky's full interview below (if you really feel like watching Fox News for some reason). 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 2 'King' just dropped a new drag name
Babe, wake up! The winner of RuPaul's Drag Race season 2 has just announced another drag name.James Ross (he/him), the drag artist best known as Tyra Sanchez while competing in (and winning!) the second season of Drag Race, spent the past few years asking fans to stop attaching Tyra to the franchise created by RuPaul. Ross also made it clear that King Tyra was the official new name for fans to refer to this drag persona. But something has changed within Ross, or at least that's how it seems! On Saturday, November 16, the official @thatdamntyra profile on X/Twitter wrote:"Drop the King, just call me Tyra." (@) A slightly altered version of this announcement was shared via the official Instagram page from @thatdamtyra."Message. Not Queen. Not King. Just Tyra."See on InstagramThe formal and informal renaming of Tyra has been a recurring theme as far back as Drag Race season 2. At the time, RuPaul had fun calling Tyra as "the other Tyra" in reference to Tyra Banks. In recent years, after taking a break from drag, Tyra returned to social media with a new drag name: King Tyra, who went by he/him pronouns even in drag (according to Ross). It's unclear if this "drop the King" rebranding means that Tyra will once again use she/her pronouns for the drag persona. Nonetheless, it doesn't seem like Tyra's contentious relationship with the Drag Race franchise has changed.RuPaul's Drag Race is streaming on Paramount+.

After Donald Trumps election, LGBTQ+ people are getting mysterious texts for reeducation camp
Not long after Donald Trumps election victory in the early morning hours of November 6, hundreds of Black Americans reported receiving text messages saying they had been selected to pick cotton on a plantation. Now the FBI has announced that Latino and LGBTQ+ individuals also received texts and emails of a similar nature. Related Donald Trump is already inspiring other countries to crack down on homosexuality A prominent lawmaker in Uzbekistan cited Trumps electoral win in calling for a ban on LGBTQ+ propaganda. The text message recipients have now expanded to high school students, as well as both the Hispanic and LGBTQIA+ communities, the FBI said in a statement on Friday. Some recipients reported being told they were selected for deportation or to report to a re-education camp. The messages have also been reported as being received via email communication. The message referred to an executive order and instructed her to check in to be transported to an undisclosed location for an LGB re-education camp, she told The New York Times. She said that she knew the message wasnt real, but the specificity was unsettling. The timing is not a coincidence, Brier said. Theres a lot of concern among my queer friends about whats going to happen to us.The FBI said they had already been aware of the offensive and racist text messages sent to Black communities around the country in the election aftermath and are working with the Justice Departments Civil Rights Division and other federal authorities to locate the senders. Some texts reported by recipients referred to them by name and included middle school-age children. Many referred to Trumps win.On Wednesday and Thursday following the election, hundreds of social media users in over a dozen states shared the messages they had received. Some individuals reported getting voicemails, as well. Students at several historically Black colleges were among the recipients of the racist texts. pic.twitter.com/Xe6HHrBruZ JJ (@playamadeJJ) November 6, 2024Has anybody else been getting these weird ass Trump slavery texts & calls/voicemails? Some were explicitly signed as from the Trump & Vance Administration. The Trump campaign has absolutely nothing to do with these text messages, spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. To date, the FBI said it had not received any reports of text messages that resulted in violent acts.Several states and federal agencies are investigating the origin of the racist and homophobic messages. Volleyball team members sue their coach for allowing a trans teammate to play
The players on San Jose State Universitys womens volleyball team are now suing their teams head coach, university, and Mountain West (MW) Conference officials for allowing a transgender woman to play on their team. Five teams have recently tried to forfeit their matches with the team because of the trans player.Brooke Slusser, the team captain, is leading the suit along with two other former players on the SJSU team and four athletes from other universities. They allege that their Title IX and First Amendment rights were violated due to allowing a trans woman to play on their college team. Related Lauren Boebert applauds volleyball team for transphobia. She was immediately overruled. This is how we stand up against these radicals! she wrote just as the university announced that it is not, in fact, standing up against anything. The suit is backed by the Independent Council on Womens Sport. The plaintiffs lawyer, Bill Bock, said, The NCAA, Mountain West Conference, and college athletic directors around the country are failing women. Because the administrators dont have the courage to do their jobs, we have to ask the federal courts to do their jobs for them.A Mountain West spokesperson told the right-leaning sports site OutKick, The Mountain West Conference prioritizes the best interests of our student-athletes and takes great care to adhere to NCAA and MW policies. While we are unable to comment on the pending litigation of this particular situation, we take seriously all concerns of student-athlete welfare and fairness. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The players oppose the transgender inclusion policy at the university, claiming it stifles free speech rights of womens athletes. The lawsuit demands an injunction be placed on the trans-inclusive policies before a November 27 tournament, and demands that either SJSU as a whole be disqualified or the player in question be disqualified, citing safety risks. It also asks for the losses of teams who forfeited to be removed. The transgender player in question has not come forward to the press, and contrary to claims that the player poses safety risks, there is no evidence that anyone has been injured as a result of her playing on the sports team. Schools that chose to forfeit against San Jose State for allegedly having a trans female player include Southern Utah University, Boise State University, Utah State University, and Wyoming University. The player in question has been playing for three seasons now without issues with her participation. She has been compliant with NCAA requirements for testosterone levels throughout this entire period, and has never violated the requirements. There is no evidence of discrimination against cisgender female athletes due to her participation.Todd Kress, coach of the San Jose State University team, said that his team has dealt with hate mail as a result of the publicity over the teammate. Some of it, to be honest, is disgusting. Im more worried about our student-athletes and what they receive and how thats impacting their mental health, Kress toldlocal media. There have been outside forces who have sought to divide our team, our university, our conference and our sport, Kress added. I know its been weighing on the players in our locker room who have put in years of hard work. We have an incredible group of young women who are trying to put the controversy aside. I just have faith that well eventually be able to put the outside noise aside and be able to play for each other and find love for one another again.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Meet the hot queer men of Elska Salt Lake City
Forget what you think you know about Salt Lake City!It turns out, the Utah capital, though very conservative, also has a sizeable, sexy, and proud community filled with LGBTQ+ folks who are living their lives in full and beloved queer travel and photography zine Elska is here to help prove that!Though religion does play a big part on many of the stories of the handsome gents taking up the pages of Elska's 49th issue (SLC has a huge population of followers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), it's not the only thing about them, and Elska's latest batch of sensual, intimate portraits humanizes and puts faces to names when it comes to life after being raised in Mormonism. And, as a release points out, this is the second issue since Elska Melbourne where "every one of the participants opted to bare all in their photoshoots, surprising anyone who thought a Utah issue would be buttoned-up.""For many years I've toyed with the idea of making an issue in Salt Lake City, but I had a difficult time weighing the potential pros and cons," Elska's Liam Campbell said in a statement. "On one hand, it would be an excellent opportunity to show what life is like for gay Utahns and to know how the legacy of the LDS church affects their lives. On the other hand, I feared that too many potential readers would expect us to fetishize Mormon boys, and would be disappointed when we inevitably failed to publish an mag full of horny elders in their white garments." "Ultimately I found that my hopes and fears converged in a way that proved I'd satisfy both those who eschew and those who desire stereotypes," Campbell continued. "I found that Mormonism played a huge role in this edition, especially in the stories the men contributed, but also in the photography, which featured not one but two men who opted to do a scene wearing their missionary 'uniform' but with the trousers off, or even wearing nothing but their elder badge."Scroll through to see more portraits from Elska's Salt Lake City issue. Intersectionality in action: Creating safe spaces for queer people of color
From ancient Egypt to modern Oak Lawn, people of color have celebrated expansive gender identities and same-sex relationships. In the 16th century, the first documented enslaved transgender African woman, Victoria, refused to compromise her identities. And in 2024, Black trans Texas drag queens are doing the same.Life experiences for queer people of color vary greatly, but they all have one thing in common: intersectionality. In 1989,Kimberl Crenshaw, a Black legal scholar and civil rights advocate, coined the term intersectionalityto describe how multiple forms of oppression can compound and create unique experiences for people who have multiple minority identities.DeAne Kennedy, a 26-year-old queer Black woman and founder of theDallas Black Queer Collective, said that she and her friends refer to her intersectional identities as a triple whammy.Im Black; Im queer, and Im a woman, she said. Its hard to feel safe in a lot of spaces with all of those identities in play. She said that she doesnt feel like she has to pick an identity, but she found that in all-Black spaces and in all-LGBTQ+ spaces, she didnt feel like she could comfortably express all of her identities authentically.Im a dark-skinned Black woman, she said. Something that happens a lot in queer spaces is the hyper-masculinization of Black women in general, and especially if youre queer.People have misgendered me instead of asking me my pronouns. I could be wearing the same clothes as a white or Latin woman, but because Im Black, people think Im trans because of what Im wearing.A 2020 Center for American Progress surveyshows that Black LGBTQ+ people consistently change their behavior to avoid potentially harmful experiences:Nearly one in three report avoiding public spaces such as stores or restaurants to avoid experiencing discrimination; two in five have moved away from family to prevent discriminatory experiences; and one in five avoid travel. They are also more likely than their white counterparts to experience discrimination within LGBTQ spaces. The survey also noted that Black LGBTQ+ people face disproportionate levels of discrimination ranging from more frequent police interactions to mistreatment in the workplace to discriminatory treatment from health care providers.Betty Neal, a 67-year-old Black gay woman from Dallas, worked as a club manager, promoter, emcee and DJ at clubs in the gayborhood starting in the 1980s. The self-proclaimed OD, original dyke recounted that queer people of color needed multiple forms of ID to get into bars at the time.It wasnt happening to me directly because I was in the inner circle as the first Black lesbian who worked in the gay bars in Dallas, she said. But it was happening to my friends who were trying to get in.Jesus Chairez, the 71-year-old gay Latino godfather of Dallas, was 27 years old when he moved to Oak Lawn, and he remembers going to meet a date at a bar in the neighborhood shortly after moving there. Id heard that people of color and especially Black people were always asked for three picture IDs, Chairez said. And his ID wasnt good enough to get him in the club, he remembers the bouncer saying.I didnt think much of it until, as I was leaving the bar, I heard the doorman tell the cashier, Thats another Mexican down. I was horrified, Chairez said.He said he spoke to the president of the Dallas Gay Alliance, but the president said his situation wasnt something they could get involved in. In the 1970s and 80s, Chairez addedm DGA was prominent in fighting LGBTQ+ discrimination that came from outside the community but often turned a blind eye to discrimination within the gay community. There were no gay Latino organizations for me to go to, so I joined LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) and met other gay Latinos, Chairez said. I learned how to organize. I formed the Gay and Lesbian Hispanic Coalition de Dallas in 1982, which was the second gay Latino organization in Texas. He said the group, which hosted workshops and raised money to fight the AIDS crisis, expanded to San Antonio, El Paso and Austin and then went national. Jose Plata, the first openly gay person elected to the Dallas school board, was an original member of the Dallas organization. In 1988, Bamboleos opened as the first gay Latino bar in the gayborhood. Chairez said that a bar for queer Latinos was needed because his community often felt discriminated against in Dallass mainstream, mainly white bars.Sometimes, when I am talking to an older Caucasian gay man about the problems with the bars in the 70s and early-to-mid-80s,I get the remark, I never have had any of those problems, Chairez said. I then tell them, The reason you never experienced this problem is because you are white. It is called white privilege.Neal said the music she was allowed to play in the bars back then was limited: In a lesbian bar in the late 80s, an owner told me not to play any Black stuff, Neal recalled. As soon as she left, I started playing Salt-N-Pepa, and the crowd loved it. The owner came back in, heard what I was playing, took my record and threw it across the room.Ever since then, I insisted on playing what I wanted to play.Neal said that when Black music was becoming more mainstream, clubs would play the songs to a house beat instead of a hip-hop beat to appease owners. We started seeing more and more Black gay people coming out, so we opened up Raps to give them a space that would be more welcoming, she said. I brought in Black drag queens from Atlanta and Houston, and people loved them.Neal also said she watched one of her friends lose gigs in the gayborhood because the crowd got too Black.Owners thought the white crowd would leave if Black people were in their bars, but slowly and surely, when white kids started listening to hip-hop, the bars naturally integrated, Neal said.Tamera Hutcherson, a pansexual, bi-racial and Black 29-year-old campaign strategist, said that while she doesnt experience overt racism inside the LGBTQ+ community, she has seen the prevalence of subtle anti-Blackness.We all have our own biases to grow from, they said. The main thing to name is that anti-Blackness is a problem within the LGBTQ+ community. Were all facing oppression, but some more than others because of our race, and we cant pull away from that.Hutcherson said that because she is light-skinned, colorism affords her privileges, and their experience is different from that of a dark-skinned Black person. And because she is cisgender, her experiences differ from that of a Black trans man or woman.I think I have privileges that Black gay men dont have because, within the Black community, there is an extreme sense of homophobia and transphobia, she said. I cant pinpoint why that is, but I think it stems from our history. I think it goes back to the Atlantic Slave Trade and the [emasculation] of Black men.But that is a tough topic to talk about in the Black community.Kennedy said that it can feel frustrating when intersectional oppression happens in what are supposed to be safe spaces.Thats how the Collective was born, she said. I didnt feel safe in Black straight spaces, and I encountered racism in LGBTQ spaces. Its shocking to experience oppression from other oppressed groups, and its often disguised, which can make you question if its really happening.Kennedy said that in 2024, she brought her mom to an LGBTQ+ mixer, and her mom noticed something strange: She noticed that I was being blatantly ignored, like people were scared to interact with me, Kennedy said. She called it out before I did, and for someone outside the community to see that covert racism so clearly, she understood why I needed to create the Collective.Kennedy said that when she was traveling in Europe, a woman invited her to a Black queer collective event, and they talked about how to navigate anger as people with intersecting identities.I remember being so moved by it, and I was like, Dallas needs this, a space for Black queer folk to come together. Queer people are not just nightlife, and were not just who we have sex with. We need a space for this, especially for people who are quiet and queer.Kennedy came back to Dallas and started the Dallas Black Queer Collective in February 2024. She said the first event was a mixer, and she expected five people, but more than 15 showed up. From there, it kept doubling in size. Its a big thing for me that people feel like they belong to something, she said. I find people who have such a light about them have been through some of the darkest things, and Ive experienced a lot of loneliness. I try to make sure people dont ever experience the loneliness Ive felt.To combat collective loneliness, Kennedy said its important that people feel seen. She said that its been overwhelming to have people come up to her at Collective events and tell her that theyfeel seen.People overwhelmingly tell me that they need the Collective, she said. Ive seen Black gay or lesbian groups, but I wanted to come up with a community space that could hold all Black queer people. Whether youre nonbinary, questioning or know your identity in great detail, you can exist in this space, and that was my intention when creating it.She said the Collective is open to allies as long as people understand that the group centers Black queer voices. Its been very rewarding to engage with other Black queer individuals and ultimately feel seen.Tamera HutchersonHutcherson said that queer people of color need their own spaces, as many LGBTQ+ groups in Dallas dont have Black representation. We want groups that would center our own experience, and I think its important for affinity spaces to exist for our own well-being and healing, they said. One group Hutcherson has found safety in is the Dallas Black Queer Collective. Its been very rewarding to engage with other Black queer individuals and ultimately feel seen, she said. Throughout history we have seen the erasure of Black queer people. Being seen and having fundamental rights is important to the safety of the LGBTQ BIPOC community. The Collective has partnered with local Dallas organizations like Resource Center and Oak Cliff Veggie Project to host mutual aid and social events. Some events include a Black queer woman-directed short film showing, community garden harvesting, yoga classes, a beauty expo with BIPOC queer beauty vendors and social mixers every last Wednesday of each month.Kennedy said that the Collective hosts three or more monthly events, and 30 people or more show up consistently. There are 100 people on the email list, and a thousand people follow the Collectives page on Instagram.Im Dallas born and raised, so to be doing something like this in my hometown where I was too afraid to come out when I was younger, its crazy, Kennedy said. I think within the Dallas LGBTQ community, we have some work to do, and I believe that change is coming soon.It sucks that I felt the need to do this because I was experiencing racism, but Im happy the Collective is here now.Liquor Mini, a 51-year-old gay Mexican-American man, drag queen and show director at Hamburger Marys, has been playing in drag for 25 years.I think most people assume that Im white, she said. In drag, they see me as a rich white woman. Racism within the LGBTQ community has affected my friends, especially my trans friends, more than its affected me.She said that while racism and stereotyping hasnt personally affected her, she knows it is a reality for some LGBTQ+ people of color, and she takes that into account when developing a cast for drag shows. She said that there are certain venues that have an all-POC cast and others that have all-white casts. Its important for me as a show director to represent all of the community, Mini said. I make sure to book trans people, people of color and white people in my cast. Its important that people in the audience see themselves represented on stage.Liquor Mini said when she moved to Dallas in 2005, the bar scene was racially integrated, but there were and still are bars that cater to specific demographics. If youre Latin, youre gonna go to Caliente or Havana, she said. If youre Black, youre going to go to Martys or Vegas. I can go to any bar and feel safe and welcomed, but certain races go to certain places because thats where their tribe is.Hutcherson said that when creating a presentation on Black queer history, she felt pride and pain in learning about her ancestry. Our ideas of gender and our conceptualization of pronouns have been instilled in us over time through religion, colonization and socialization, she said. Trans people have existed for centuries, same-sex relationships have existed for centuries, and people like to act like they havent. It was both painful and full of pride, learning that even before my ancestors were chained and brought over to this country, queer Black people existed. She said that even when shes been in relationships with queer men of color, shes found that stereotypes about queer Black women pervade. They make these assumptions about me that I might be more sexually promiscuous or sexually open for their own entertainment, Hutcherson said. I know Im not the only queer woman of color who has had to deal with this kind of fetishization and hypersexualization.Chairez said that growing up, his family worked hard to assimilate into whiteness. But as an adult, he embraced his Mexican culture. His radio show,Sin Fronteras, was the first and longest-running LGBTQ+ bilingual Latino radio show not only for Dallas, but in the USA. It ran for 12 years. As an artist, Chairez advocated for showings of Latino art outside of Hispanic Heritage Month and Cinco de Mayo. And as a writer, he wrote about art and culture from a Latino perspective.I have embraced the experience I have been given and still do, he said. That evening in Oak Lawn woke up the activism in me, something that still continues today, some 44 years later.Neal said that in the 90s, clubs became more diverse, and they would host nights exclusively playing Black music. In the early 2000s, she said, being gay became more accepted, and more people felt comfortable coming out.Ive seen the culture change to where Black people can go anywhere, even the Round-Up, now, Neal said. The problem has subsided, but at the same time, theyre not going to give us too much, because they fear what comes with a crowd of African-Americans.Neal said that stereotypes in the LGBTQ+ community against Black folks have pervaded the culture for decades. She said people think that Black people are more likely to fight, bring in their own liquor and dont tip the staff. And these stereotypes have led to the removal of Black nights in bars.If someone fights at or brings liquor into a bar, that can be a real problem for the venue, and those people should get kicked out. But making an entire community suffer for the actions of a few people doesnt make sense, Neal said.Neal said that, ultimately, she set herself up to be friends with the owners and fight racism from the inside, sticking up for people of color when she saw discrimination happening. As Black people, we had to liberate the businesses, she said. We paved the way. Some of us made change from the outside, and some of us made change from the inside. This new generation doesnt know the struggles weve gone through to make the scene as welcoming as it is now.Chairez said hes watched racism in the LGBTQ+ community evolve and lessen over the years. He said while he doesnt frequent the bars in Oak Lawn anymore, he visited in March 2024.I was amazed to see many women, drag queens, trans and many African-Americans and Latinos all young, hanging out having a good time all enjoying each others company, Chairez said.No more three picture IDs required to keep us out, as we had now taken over, he continued. Bar owners now seem very accepting. I guess they had to change their attitude if they wanted their business to survive.Neal echoed Chairezs sentiment: Im really proud of the gay bars in Oak Lawn for growing with us, growing with the community and not being so exclusive. I know the owners now, and they dont have a racist bone in their bodies. They dont care what color you are, as long as you follow the rules.Mini said that since the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, companies are more focused on DEI, ensuring that theyre hitting the mark when it comes to making people of color feel included.Being a part of the LGBTQ community, its important that we dont separate ourselves from others within our community, Mini said, Especially right now, when our rights could be at risk again as gay people, people of color and women, its more important than ever to be unified, to include everyone, no matter your race, religion, sexuality or gender identity. If we stick together, we live in a safer space. The post Intersectionality in action: Creating safe spaces for queer people of color appeared first on News Is Out.

    What is a 'ninja lesbian'?
If there is anything we love to do in our Sapphic community it's to put ourselves into various discrete lesbian categories. Butch, femme, chapstick, lipstick, baby dykes, gold stars, hey mamas and yes, ninja lesbians. The list goes on. But lets talk about that last one. What the heck is a ninja lesbian despite sounding really cool? Maybe you've seen it pop up on TikTok, or had someone include it on their HER bio, or even called you one. If youre confused, no worries. Heres the tea with ninja lesbians. What is a ninja lesbian? So what are these lesbians of myth and mystery known as the ninja lesbian? Quite simply, according to Urban Dictionary, ninja lesbians are queer women who look completely straight until WA-BAM, she's checking out your boobs and listening to Melissa Etheridge. In other, less dude-bro terms, ninja lesbians are usually high femme Sapphics whose personal style and aesthetics are such that they can go stealth and blend in with straight culture. That makes sense, right? How was the term "ninja lesbian" popularized? While the exact origin of the term has been to the sands of time and algorithms of the internet, the popularity of the term surged last year following an episode of the Ive Had It podcast which discussed the existence of ninja lesbians. In the Feb. 23, 2023 episode entitled, appropriately, Ninja Lesbians, hosts Jennifer Welch and Angie "Pumps" Sullivan discuss a message they receive from a listener named Tammy M who has called in to say that she has had it with straight people appropriating the term partner. Tammy M goes on to explain that her partner is a ninja lesbian, super feminine so she walks amongst the straights completely undetected. Tammy M is frustrated because her partner is constantly being disappointed by the experience of meeting other women who she wrongly assumes are also ninja lesbians when they refer to their significant other as their partner, only to reveal they're a dude. (Cue the *whomp whomp* sound effect). Both the hosts heartily agree with Tammys opinion that partner should be the sole property of the LGBTQ+ community, then talk excitedly about the existence of ninja lesbians.@ivehaditpodcastHeres how social media has reacted to the term "ninja lesbian".As always social media had a ton of fun with the term. Would you friend-zone someone over their zodiac sign? Lesbians weigh in
Astrology has become a common hobby in recent years, particularly among queer millennials. But at what point does it cross the line into something detrimental? The question recently came up in the ActualLesbiansOver25 subreddit when one user said she was "friend-zoned" purely because of her astrological sign."Its such a desert out there, and this woman is really friend-zoning me based on my zodiac big 3 and nothing else and refuses to even tell me her sun sign," wrote u/Questioning8. "She said wed have a blast as friends but she didnt see romance based on my big 3. That doesnt even compute to me. how can we be terrible as lovers but great as friends?"The original poster wasn't the only one thrown by the idea of someone putting so much stock in astrological compatibility right off the bat. Other redditors quickly reassured her that looking to the stars is not a great way to determine whether or not you should date somebody. from ActualLesbiansOver25 from ActualLesbiansOver25 from ActualLesbiansOver25Still, it was acknowledged that queer millennial women do tend to be drawn towards astrology maybe sometimes a little too much. from ActualLesbiansOver25 from ActualLesbiansOver25 from ActualLesbiansOver25How did we get here? "Astrology comes into vogue at times of great change societally because we're breaking open a paradigm of what we thought worked for us," astrologer Chani Nicholas said in an interview shared with The Advocate in 2020. "It's a very queer phenomenon. I think queers have really always taken to it. We need alternative ways of seeing ourselves or being witnessed."There's definitely something to the idea of looking for guidance in a world where everything is so uncertain, especially for members of society who don't follow the obvious paths. But queers, of all people, should know that you risk the chance of missing out on something great if you hold on too tightly to expectations even astrological. As for what to do in a scenario where you seem to be hitting it off with someone, but they believe your chart could derail things? The reigning opinion seems to be that it actually is a compatibility issue after all, albeit not just in the way Astrology Queers may think. from ActualLesbiansOver25 from ActualLesbiansOver25 from ActualLesbiansOver25

25 of the biggest myths about LGBTQ+ sex, debunked!
There are a lot of myths floating around about the way LGBTQ+ people have sex let's clear them up!There are so many misconceptions about gay sex. How we do it, when we do it, who do we do it with. Why? Well for one thing its hardly ever taught in sex ed, so the only real way to understand it is to... well... do it. Sure there are gay sex scenes and lesbian sex scenes in films and TV, but those rarely show the reality. Yes, queer porn also exists (thank god!) but even that is much more of a fantasy and rarely a true representation of what goes on between queer folks behind closed doors. Naturally, people are going to get it wrong sometimes and just have misunderstandings about how it all works. Some of them are more ignorant than harmless, but others are just downright dangerous. Join us as we debunk 25 of the largest and most persistent myths about LGBTQ+ sexuality, in no particular order.Gay men just have anal sex. There's so many other ways to have sex than just doing anal sex. Gay men have sex in a variety of ways and manners. Plus, not every guy likes anal. Different strokes for different folks.Lesbians just scissor.Ah yes, the classic misconception that lesbians only ever engage in scissoring. While scissoring is enjoyed in many lesbian relationships, it's not the sexual position of preference for many cis women. Oral or anal sex may be more prefered instead. It all depends on the women having sex at the time!Bisexuals aren't "really" gay. This one is false, despite being so recurrent. No, bisexuals are really bisexual: they're attracted to their own gender and one or more. It's that simple, yet people want to push bisexuals into identifying as something they're not.Trans sexuality.A whole slideshow could be dedicated to the misconceptions present about trans sexuality. One tidbit to address: trans bodies function differently from cisgender bodies, so trans people engage in sex in different ways. Some are OK with using their genitals during sex, some aren't. Some engage in PIV (penis in vagina), others don't. It depends from person to person the end."Queer" just means "gay."There's a variety of definitions and identities under the term "queer." Being "queer" is just an umbrella term, so it's important not to conflate it with simply being gay.Asexuals just need to meet "the right person."Asexual people feel little or no sexual attraction, meaning there isn't a "right" person that "fixes" their asexuality. They just don't feel sexual attraction the same way other people do.Poly relationships are excuses for casual sex.Not true. Healthy poly relationships are built on romantic and sexual bonds that are strong, meaningful, and empowering. It's important not to confuse that with open relationships, which are based on two or more people being open about sex but staying romantically tied.Open relationships fall apart.A mature, healthy, and happy relationship can make an open relationship work! No, an open relationship doesn't automatically mean drama.PrEP means condom-free!Woah buddy! There are a lot more STIs out there than just HIV. PrEP may be a life-saver, but it's still important to take care of yourself, watch out, and get tested regularly. There's no way to safely toss salad. There is! Dental dams are not just safe, they can make clean up easier and leave out that questionable aftertaste when you're all done. Female condoms work too over the ass, as do cutting a male condom. You don't need protection if you've already slept together.Wrong, for a lot of reasons! Some forms of sex are messy and just require a condom, like anal sex. Or your partner could contract an STI and later give it to you, especially if your relationship is open. Don't take chances.Gay men have high sex drives.Gay men's sex drives come in a variety of styles and sizes. Some men like to hook up and have sex a lot, others only now and then while in relationships. Everyone is different.Meanwhile, lesbians have barely any sex drive. The Lesbian Bed Death myth is not true at all. Many lesbians in relationships remain very sexually active with their partners. Others, a little less, but that doesn't validate the stereotype! It just means every person and every relationship is different.Trans women have sex just like in porn. No, not really. Porn shows fantastical images of how sex works, including for trans women. We don't act or behave like many trans women in porn; some of us don't even like using our strapless. It's just not a realistic image of what sex with us is like."You have to toss a salad to be gay."Or have anal. Or receive. Or be a top. It all doesn't matter; what's important is if your partner honorsyouandyour boundaries. You never have to do anything you do not want to do.Photo: PixabayWe're all tops and all bottoms. There's many other kinds of "types" in the mix, including vers. And some people simply prefer to opt out of the whole "tops" and "bottoms" lexicon altogether, seeing themselves as simply a partner for their partner.Or we're largely oversaturated with bottoms. While bottoms are common and plentiful in the LGBT community, it's not as if we live in a top or vers drought. Again, there's many types of people with types of preferences in the community these days. Be open-minded!Photo: PixabayGay sexuality can't be found in pop culture.Oh, we're all over the place. From video games like Mass Effect and Life is Strange, to shows like The L Word and Heartstopper. Seriously, you have to be blind not to see it.Relationships always end in weddings.Gay and queer relationships go in a variety of directions. A lot of couples choose not to get engaged because, well, why in the first place? It's important to be open to the idea that everyone's romantic and sexual lives are different. The party scene "is crazy."We do know how to throw some hot parties here in the queer community, but the term "hot" is relative. Every host throws their own style of party, and some are more laid-back and chill than others. It depends on the circumstances, who's hosting, and whether their friend group is more casual or on the wilder, party-hardy side. The sex toy market is very niche.Believe me, it isnot. There are sites upon sites dedicated to toys for gay men and women, and there's tons of guides online for trans people looking to have sex. And for the gay guys, check out our recommended sex toy purchases. They're perfect for any and every boudoir. There's no porn by and for queer or trans women.False! More and more, the internet is allowing queer and trans creators to develop erotic stories, films, and comics by and for their own identity. Just check out titles like Nerve Endings!HIV is a non-issue these days. That's not true, and certain communitiessuch as the trans communityare at high risk of contracting HIV. While extensive measures have helped make HIV a controllable disease, it still remains a major problem across our communities. We know everything we need to know about each other.LGBTQ+ sex education curriculums are practically non-existent. A lot of us have to learn as we go, so it's important to have empathy and patience for one another when we prove ignorant or unsure.Queer sexuality and relationships are radically different. At the end of the day, queer sexuality mirrors straight sexuality in a lot of ways. We hook up, make out, fight, have make-up sex, experiment with one another, grow close to each other... it's very similar, in a lot of ways, and just another part of the human experience.

House GOP introduces bill to ban newly elected Democrat from using the womens room at the Capitol
Anti-LGBTQ+ Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) has introduced a bill to bar transgender women from using Capitol restrooms that match their gender identity. After doing so, she implied that Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, the first out transgender Congressmember, would endanger women and girls if allowed to use the restroom and pledged she would stand in McBrides way if she tried. McBride has said shes not particularly concerned with the resolution. The resolution would prohibit any trans or nonbinary House members, officers, and employees from using single-sex facilities that match their gender identities, The Hill reported. It would task the House sergeant-at-arms, an officer in a legislative body who maintains order, with enforcing the rule. Mace has said she intends the resolution to be included in a rules package for the incoming 119th Congress or as a stand-alone rule to be passed soon after McBrides arrival in January 2025. As such, it would only need a majority vote in the then-Republican-led chamber to pass. Related Sarah McBride explains how she pulled off her historic victory McBride insisted anti-trans ads werent what swung the election in Donald Trumps favor. When asked about the resolution on Monday evening, Mace said she would stand in McBrides way if she tries to use womens facilities in the Capitol, adding, She doesnt get a say. Horrible, awful, and mean woman.[image or embed] Yashar Ali (@yasharali.bsky.social) November 18, 2024 at 10:22 PMWhen asked the same question, anti-LGBTQ+ Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) referred to McBride as a man and a biological male and said, He would not be allowed to use our womens restrooms, our womens gym, our locker room, or spaces that are specified for women, adding, He has plenty of places he can go. He can go in the mens room, and he has a bathroom in his office, just like the rest of us.Greene then claimed that this election was all about voters being fed up with the Left forcing their sick trans ideology down our throats and invading our spaces and our womens sports, adding, Theyre sick of this s**t. [McBride] has to respect my space, my privacy, and other womens space and their privacy. While Republicans spent over $215 million on ads attacking Democrats for their pro-trans policies, only an estimated 4% of voters ranked trans issues among their top concerns in exit polls. Nevertheless, other Democrats argue that the ads successfully depicted their party as out of touch. JUST IN: Reps. Delawareans sent me here to make the American dream more affordable and accessible and thats what Im focused on, she said.Journalist Kadia Goba asked McBride whether she had discussed bathroom use with Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). Two trans women beaten in train station while bystanders cheered
LGBTQ+ advocates say bystanders cheered as two transgender women were viciously attacked in Minneapolis earlier this month. In a statement, Minneapolis Police told The Independent that the two women confronted a group of people who were making derogatory remarks about them at a downtown Minneapolis light rail station on November 10, leading to a physical altercation. Related Jen Psaki warns Democrats not to cave to the right on trans rights Psaki emphasized that abandoning trans rights would be falling victim to GOP propaganda. Amber Muhm, one of the organizers of a rally in support of the victims at the station on Sunday, told the outlet that shes spoken to the women, identified only as Dahlia and Jess. They told her that they were leaving the station when a man yelled anti-trans slurs at them. According to Muhm, when Jess asked the man to stop, he sucker punched her. After Dahlia hit the man with her cane, four or five other men began beating the pair. In fact, they said people were cheering the attackers on while they were getting beaten, Muhm told CBS News.It was a traumatic event and they are both still dealing with the physical consequences of that very acutely but the community is kind of whats keeping them grounded right now, Muhm told The Independent.Minneapolis police told CBS News that they were investigating the incident, but had made no arrests as of Sunday night. They need to step up because this keeps happening and its ridiculous and unacceptable at this point, Muhm said of the police response.According to CBS News, Dahlia and Jess moved to Minnesota from Iowa because of the states Trans Refuge law. Introduced by state Rep. Leigh Finke (D) Minnesotas first out trans legislator and passed in March 2023, the law prevents out-of-state laws from interfering with people seeking gender-affirming care in Minnesota. At Sundays rally, Finke said she expects to see even more trans people moving to the state following the re-election of former President Donald Trump, whose campaign spent millions on anti-trans ads in battleground states during the final months of the campaign.People are so emboldened now. Theres so much false data, so many false narratives about trans people, Muhm told The Independent, adding that at Sundays rally bystanders repeated false claims about gender affirming surgeries being performed on 10-year-olds.One speaker at the rally told CBS News that Trumps re-election is fueling fear in the trans community. People are talking to me about erasing their social media presence, going back in the closet, they said. But Muhm urged people to stay in the fight. The community here is beautiful. Were building a movement, were going to get through this and were going to be stronger for it and Minneapolis is going to be such a beautiful place for trans people to live, she said.At the same time, Muhm noted that trans people in the city are preparing for a possible uptick in anti-trans violence by enrolling in self-defense classes and looking into getting handgun permits.People are about to get a lot more hostile and emboldened in their transphobia, she told The Independent, so what do we do to protect ourselves when were out?Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Oh, no, Toto! Original Wicked Witch of the West actress was too ugly for the part
Everybody's excited about Oz these days! With the release of the new Wicked movie only a few days away, the classic story of The Wizard of Oz is on everyone's minds! Thankfully, that means we get to find out some interesting and c*nty historical facts about the original film that we never knew before! While we all know that in the original Wizard of Oz film, the iconic Wicked Witch of the West was played by the iconic Margaret Hamilton in one of the most memorable villain performances of all-time, what many don't know is that another actress was almost cast, and her look for the character was completely different! (@) Before Hamilton was cast, Oscar-winning actress Gale Sondergaard was lined up to play the role, and even did some costume tests! However, her version of the Wicked Witch was very different from the one we know and love! In her original design for the movie, the Witch was serving c*nty Evil Queen from Snow White realness, with a black dress, sequined cape, black hood, and sequined witch hat. She also had on beautiful glamor makeup, making her look like a movie star very different from the green-skinned, pointy-chinned, frightening Witch we got in the end.See on InstagramWhile Sondergaard, who was 40 at the time, looked great, the studio also had her do a test in more traditional ugly witch makeup, which led to her dropping out of the film.Sondergaard reportedly feared that wearing makeup that disfigured her and made her look older would damage her career, as Hollywood was even more difficult for actresses over 40 at the time then it is now. So she dropped out of the role, opening the door for Hamilton. In the new Wicked film, The Wicked Witch of the West, also known as Elphaba, is played by the amazing Cynthia Erivo. She stars alongside Ariana Grande as Glinda, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero.Wicked opens in theaters November 22.

The spirits of Black trans women are unbreakable & no hateful rhetoric can strip us of our worth
Another election season has come and gone, confirming our worst fears: Our rights, safety, and dignity remain at the mercy of shifting political tides, once again left unprotected and vulnerable. This election cycle, we witnessed a surge of narratives defining who we are without our input. Our lives became a polarizing topic; we were reduced to pawns to stoke fear, anger, and division at best, we were tokenized as an abstract cause for others to claim credit in saving. We became a topic of debate in dining rooms across America, without ever being offered a seat at the table to speak for ourselves. Related Trans people are entering a new chapter of resistance. We are ready. Weve prepared for this possibility. Weve developed contingency plans. We will adapt, and we will continue our work with renewed urgency. Throughout this campaign, our bodies, our lives, and our existence were shamelessly politicized. Trans people were presented as concepts in campaign ads, national debates, and living room conversations, all without ever having a trans person present. But what I as a Black trans woman living in the South see in my own community is a different story altogether. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today My Black trans sisters, brothers, and nonbinary family embody strength, resilience, love, and acceptance. We are anchored in a determination that far outweighs the neverending waves of oppressive forces we confront. We do not need a lifeboat from others to keep us afloat. We are here to stay, and no election, no law, no hateful rhetoric can strip us of our worth. No political cycle can overshadow our truth: We are powerful, resilient, and deserving of full humanity. It has become increasingly clear that true solutions for our community come from within. As Ian L. Haddock, founder of The Normal Anomaly Initiative, reminded us on the ground in Texas where we met for solidarity after this election, They are not coming to save us.We must save ourselves. This is why grassroots programs that center and uplift trans people are more important than ever. In Houston, I am fortunate to be part of the Trans Ally Collective Scholars in Action for Gender Expansive Services (TAC: SAGES), a one-of-a-kind cohort of Black trans women leading research for our own communities. In partnership with the SUSTAIN Center at the University of Houstons Graduate College of Social Work, we are spearheading groundbreaking research that allows us to identify our own needs and create our own solutions, placing power in the capable hands of Black trans women. The women at its helm showcase not only the remarkable tenacity but the unstoppable drive that defines us. Together, they transform adversity into progress, expanding spaces where our voices, stories, and truths can resonate louder than ever. It is not just a program; its a testament to the unbreakable spirit of Black trans women who refuse to be erased or silenced. We recently held a press conference announcing the launch of this research in Houston while standing under a billboard showing a photo of myself and six of my fellow trans sisters. Seeing our faces in public, proudly displayed for all to see, was a powerful reminder: While they may try to strip us of our narrative, twist our stories, or label us for their own gain, we arent going anywhere. Now those who try to create narratives for us can drive down the street and be reminded we have our own stories and dreams they can never take away. Trans women in Texas and beyond are here to stay, with our smiles, stories, and dreams firmly planted where they cannot be ignored.Amid ongoing threats to our safety, protections, and rights, its all too easy to feel discouraged, worn down by another cycle of legislation targeting our freedom. But in the face of such relentless assaults, we do not shrink. The Black trans community, as it has done since the beginning of time, stands resolute, fueled by a resilient fire that has carried us through countless battles before. Although politics may attempt to bend or silence us, we will not break. Our histories will not be erased even if they rewrite the textbooks. Trans women have always been here, and we always will be. We are not just surviving; we are thriving, and we are writing our own future. For most of my life, I have been someone who felt more comfortable working and operating in the background due to fears surrounding safety and the stereotypes imposed on my community. As a Black trans woman who has been in transition for over ten years, I have experienced how society mischaracterizes us, suggesting that trans women hide our true selves to take advantage of men and encroach on the spaces of cisgender women. These portrayals are far from the truth. We simply seek the promise of what the United States is meant to stand for: freedom the freedom to live in a way that brings peace to the deepest part of my soul.As time has passed, the trans community has become more comfortable embracing our identities. However, I have noticed how the goalposts have shifted regarding how we are perceived by society. Our narratives have often been co-opted and used to cast us in a negative light, preventing us from speaking for ourselves.I want to leave a message for my trans community and trans youth: now more than ever, it is vital for us to use our voices. We must stand together as a community to combat the rhetoric that has been directed at us. Even if you fear speaking up, it is necessary for those of us today and for future generations of trans folks. To our allies, we need you to support us in the same way we have supported the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, Black individuals, women, and everyones right to live freely. TAC- SAGES gives fuel to the voice I feared to use for so long but no longer. My voice is here and here to stay.My aWesley is a 32 year old trans woman born and raised in Houston, Texas. Victims of the Club Q mass shooting are suing the nightclub & the sheriffs office for negligence
Surviving victims of the 2022 mass shooting at the LGBTQ+ bar Club Q, along with the mothers of those who were killed, have filed two lawsuits alleging that improper safety measures caused the tragedy. Anderson Lee Aldrich killed five and injured 19 at the Colorado Springs nightclub in November 2022. In June, they were sentenced to 55 concurrent life sentences to run consecutively with 190 years in prison after pleading guilty to 74 hate crimes and firearms charges connected to the shooting. Related Marjorie Taylor Greene & Jared Polis celebrate Robert Kennedy Jr leading Health department Polis and Greene both believe that the HIV/AIDS denialist will improve Americans health. One lawsuit targets Club Q itself for allegedly reducing security at the venue to save money in the year leading up to the shooting. The other focuses on the El Paso County Sheriffs office and accuses law enforcement of failing to enforce Colorados red flag law that could have prevented the shooter from having access to firearms. Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Members of the El Paso County Sheriffs Office negligently and unconscionably played a role in Anderson Aldrich possessing and using firearms inside Club Q, they wrote in a 2023 notice of claim regarding their intent to sue. The states red flag law also known as an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) says that members of law enforcement, family members, and roommates can request the temporary removal of a persons firearms from their possession if they believe them to be a danger to others or themselves. It also prevents them from purchasing more weapons.Aldrich was arrested in 2021 for allegedly kidnapping their grandparents and threatening to kill them. Court documents also allege they had voiced plans to become the next mass killer and were stockpiling firearms, ammunition, materials to make bombs, and body armor, the Associated Press reported. Aldrich faced felony charges, which temporarily prevented them from buying guns legally. But just months before the shooting at Club Q, the felony charges were dismissed for lack of evidence, and Aldrich was free to buy and possess guns again. Colorado Public Radio reportedthat no local authorities filed a petition for the removal of Aldrichs weapons after their arrest. It is not, however, a requirement that a request be made and many conservatives believe that it is unconstitutional to remove weapons from someone who has not been convicted of a crime. In El Paso County where Colorado Springs is located local leaders have previously declared their allegiance to the Second Amendment. In 2020, the El Paso County Sheriffs Officeannouncedit would only request weapons removal if there is probable cause that a crime is being or has been committed, even though the red flag law is designed to prevent a crime before it can happen. Aldrichs case and the sheriffs refusal to use the red flag lawprompted state lawmakersto revise the provision this year to allow prosecutors, health providers, and educators to seek extreme risk protection orders, in addition to law enforcement and family members. The plaintiffs in the suit state that the sherriffs office deliberate inaction allowed the shooter continued access to firearms, directly enabling the attack on Club Q. The suit targeting Club Q for allegedly reducing security from five guards to one states the venue advertised itself as a safe place for LGBTQIA+ individuals. But that was a faade. Swing voters went for Donald Trump because of trans rights issues, poll finds
A poll conducted in the 48 hours that followed Election Day earlier this month found that voters who were undecided during the race before making up their minds in the final weeks of the campaign voted for Donald Trump by a 52-38 margin. And the survey points to the importance of trans rights issues in these voters decision-making.Of the swing voters who voted for Trump, 83% said that they believe Kamala Harris supported using taxpayer dollars to pay for transgender surgeries for undocumented immigrants in prison, according to the survey conducted by Blueprint. This is not a position that she campaigned on and is, in fact, a description of rights already accorded to people in federal custody under the Eighth Amendment, rights that were in place during Trumps first term. Related Fact Check: Did Sen. Tammy Baldwin fund an org that pushed an aggressive LGBTQ agenda on kids? Republicans are claiming that Tammy Baldwin is trying to make gender-affirming surgery legal for kids. Whats the truth? Among swing voters who voted for Harris, only 40% believed that Harris supported that policy. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today A large majority 77% of swing voters who voted for Trump believed that Harris supported allowing children under 18 to transition genders without informing their parents, which is never something Harris said she supported. Only 29% of swing voters who voted for Harris believed the same thing.Other Republican lies were also believed by large swathes of swing voters who voted for Trump. 82% believed that Harris wanted to ban gas-powered vehicles by the year 2035, which is not true, and 76% believed that Harris wanted to allow abortion up until the day of birth, which is also not true. 67% believe that Harris wanted to give Black people reparations for slavery, 74% said they believed Harris would ban fracking (something she faced criticism for explicitly opposing), and 73% said that she would force everyone onto a single-payer health care system.Swing voters who voted for Harris were less likely to believe she supported any of these positions. | Blueprint While Harris didnt support most of the positions raised in the poll, Trump was effective at getting swing voters to believe that she did. He repeatedly said that children were getting gender-affirming surgery at school without their parents knowledge, which is a lie, and his campaign spent tens of millions on ads that made it seem like support for taxpayer-funded sex changes for prisoners and immigrants was a central part of her campaign and not just a statement of how she implemented a policy when she was district attorney in San Francisco. In Michigan, the Trump campaign ran ads saying that Harris wants to end all gas-powered cars. Crazy, but true, even though thats not true. The statement about reparations comes from a social media meme that took liberties with an interview where Harris said that she supports Congress efforts to study the issue of reparations, not that she would unilaterally implement them as president. The aftermath of the 2024 elections has shown the role that misinformation played in peoples decisions on who to vote for, like fake images of Harris in a swimsuit hugging sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, rumors that immigrants were eating cats and dogs in Ohio, an AI-generated video of a man claiming he was molested by Harris running mate Tim Walz, and false statements from Republicans that the Biden administration wasnt helping people affected by Hurricane Helene. One fake video of a Haitian man showed him saying that he had voted twice in two different counties in Georgia, and it was later uncovered to be a video made by Russian influence actors.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Today, we finally got some news on that front and the wait for this Sapphic masterpiece is almost over. For the uninitiated (first of all, what are you waiting for? this show is incredible), the series has been described by Showtime as equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story, and coming-of-age drama. Its from the minds of creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson (Narcos), and follows a group of high school girls soccer players who (mostly) survive a plane crash deep in the wilderness. The remaining players and other passengers must band together to survive injuries, the elements, and a darkness that seemingly lives in the woods and within themselves. The series follows their rapid descent from friends, teammates, and lovers into savage clans. At the same time, it chronicles the survivors 25 years later, trying to live their lives, hide their secrets, and deal with the fact that the past and what they discovered in the wilderness is far from being over. When season three picks up, the former teammates will be dealing with the aftermath of the dramatic events of season two. Heres what else we know about the upcoming season. BIPOC LGBTQ+ folks are creating virtual support networks post election
In todays digital world, technology is transforming how people connect and support each other. For LGBTQ+ and BIPOC individuals, creating safe spaces online has become more crucial than ever. In the wake of the political uncertainty surrounding a second Trump presidency, these spaces offer a lifeline for those who feel targeted or threatened by policies and rhetoric that undermine their rights. Online communities allow people to share their experiences, find emotional support, and connect with others who understand their struggles. With many feeling uncertain about the future, these virtual networks are vital for maintaining a sense of belonging, empowerment, and solidarity. As we recover from the election, online community building is at the forefront of social media, making it an essential area of focus for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC activists. Why safe spaces matterLGBTQ+ and BIPOC individuals often face discrimination, exclusion, and isolation in many areas of life, which makes safe spacesboth physical and digitalcrucial for mental health and well-being.South Florida community artist,Symphonii Smith-Kennedyshares, Personally, I feel like because I have lived in conservative spaces, whether it be my family or my schools in Florida that didnt really understand and actively shunned queerness, I found a sense of relief and normalcy by finding my online community, especially during times of isolation like [during the] COVID [pandemic].For many, virtual spaces allow them to access communities that embrace their queerness, especially when physical spaces fall short. How technology helps people connectSocial media platforms, online forums, and mobile apps play a significant role in helping LGBTQ+ and BIPOC individuals find each other and build lasting connections. For example, platforms likeRedditandTumblrallow users to share their stories and ask for advice anonymously. Apps likeHERandGrindrare not only spaces for dating but also facilitate celebration of identities and connections among people in local marginalized communities.Technology has broken down geographical barriers, allowing people to find and create communities where they feel accepted and understood. This is particularly impactful for individuals who may live in areas with limited local support, as they can still find solidarity and support online.Smith-Kennedy says, The connection didnt die because I had the internet to stay in contact. This shows how crucial virtual spaces are in maintaining bonds despite geographical and political divides. With the political landscape becoming increasingly polarized, virtual communities are more important than ever in ensuring that marginalized voices are heard and supported.Accessing resources and supportBeyond connection, virtual safe spaces also provide essential resources. Organizations likeThe Trevor ProjectandHuman Rights Campaignhave built online systems offering crisis intervention, mental health resources, and educational materials tailored specifically for LGBTQ+ youth and BIPOC individuals. These platforms are particularly crucial as traditional support systems often fail to address the unique needs of these communities.Lu Calzada, an Editorial Fellow atWindy City Timessays, I was able to access so many mental health and educational resources that way, and it helped me realize that nothing was wrong with me for being queerinstead, queerness was normalized.Calzadas experience underscores the power of online resources in validating marginalized identities, particularly during politically charged times.Facing challengesWhile virtual safe spaces provide many benefits, they also come with challenges. Online harassment, doxxing (sharing private information such as addresses and phone numbers), and the spread of misinformation can create unsafe environments for users. Community rules, proper moderation, anddigital security measuresare necessary to keep these digital spaces positive and welcoming for all.Additionally, not all individuals haveequal access to technology, which can limit the reach of these resources. This is especially true in low-income BIPOC communities, where there are significant barriers to internet access. As the digital divide continues to affect marginalized communities, it is critical to ensure that all people have access to the tools needed to participate in online support networks and activism, particularly with the upcoming elections, where the role of digital organizing will be central. The future of virtual safe spacesLooking ahead, the role of virtual safe spaces will continue to expand, especially as digital advocacy and activism become more ingrained in the fight for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC rights. The growth of social media communities during election cycles highlights how technology can facilitate large-scale engagement, mobilization, and support. With platforms likeTikTokandInstagrambecoming spaces for LGBTQ+ visibility and activism, there is significant potential to use these platforms to further foster community-building and amplify marginalized voices.By continuing to leverage technology for inclusivity and safe spaces, there is hope for creating a more connected and supportive future for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities. These spaces provide not only refuge but also a powerful tool for advocacy, helping to shape a more inclusive political landscape during critical times. As technology continues to evolve, it has the potential to further break down barriers and ensure that safe, inclusive spaces remain accessible. We are approaching a significant political moment, and its crucial that we continue to embrace the power of technology in building and sustaining supportive communities that promote diversity, acceptance, and empowerment for all. This story is part of the Digital Equity Local Voices Fellowship lab through News is Out. The lab initiative is made possible with support from Comcast NBCUniversal. The post BIPOC LGBTQ+ folks are creating virtual support networks post election appeared first on News Is Out.

Less than 1% of U.S. clinical trials include trans patients. It isnt by choice.
This Transgender Awareness Week, we need to address something the healthcare system cannot afford to ignore any longer: the underrepresentation of transgender and nonbinary individuals in clinical trials. This isnt just a gap in data its a glaring oversight in healthcare equity, one that has real consequences for peoples lives.Let me be clear: Inclusion in clinical trials is not optional. It should be a core qualification in any study that claims to advance healthcare for all. Yet fewer than 1% of clinical trials in the United States include transgender or nonbinary patients. One may assume that this lack of participation is by choice. However, our recent survey at the PAN Foundation reveals a striking level of interest in clinical research among LGBTQ+ people. Related Trans people are entering a new chapter of resistance. We are ready. Weve prepared for this possibility. Weve developed contingency plans. We will adapt, and we will continue our work with renewed urgency. Despite being one of the communities most aware of historical harm and past exploitation in medical research, 65% of LGBTQ+ respondents expressed a strong willingness to participate in clinical trials. This statistic is not just encouraging its noble. LGBTQ+ individuals remain committed to advancing medicine for everyone, including each other. They recognize the power of collective action in improving healthcare outcomes and have repeatedly shown their willingness to contribute. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today However, this willingness has been met with inadequate outreach. When asked why they have not participated, 80% of LGBTQ+ individuals report that theyve simply never been asked to consider clinical trials. Its as if the healthcare system presumes this community wouldnt want to participate a damaging assumption that denies opportunities for both LGBTQ+ patients and the entire field of medicine.PANs Opening Doors to Clinical Trials initiative is our way of extending an invitation. Through the support of ComPANion Access Navigators, we help people overcome barriers like transportation and costs related to other basic needs. We also provide tools to locate trials easily and offer resources that combat mistrust and build transparency. We want the LGBTQ+ community to feel that they belong in clinical trials. Because they do.Transgender Awareness Week calls us to do more than acknowledge the existence of transgender and nonbinary people in healthcare. It challenges us to actively include them, especially in clinical research that shapes the future of medical treatment. Without their participation, data and findings are incomplete, and the healthcare field continues to operate with limited knowledge and understanding of transgender and nonbinary health needs. For researchers, healthcare providers, and policymakers: If you aim to serve the health of the public, you must ensure that clinical trials include transgender and nonbinary patients. This is not a request; its an obligation to every individual we claim to serve. For every person excluded, we fall short of our mission. With federal mandates and government involvement in DEI remaining uncertain, private companies, nonprofits, and pharmaceutical firms play a vital role in setting active goals to increase representation. Together, we can bridge this gap and create a future where everyone has an equal stake in the medical research that shapes healthcare. Lets make inclusion in clinical trials the norm not an option, but a mandate. For more information on the PAN Foundations Opening Doors to Clinical Trials, or to speak with someone about potentially joining a clinical trial, visit https://clinicaltrials.panfoundation.org/.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
