We stopped to videotape [ICE activity], and they shot her in the head.Goods mother, Donna Ganger, toldtheMinnesota Star Tribune, She was probably terrified, adding that her daughter has never protested against ICE agents. Renee was one of the kindest people Ive ever known, Ganger added. She was extremely compassionate. Shes taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being. In a social media post, the president claimed that Good was a professional agitator who viciously ran over the ICE officer. He blamed the shooting on the Radical Left. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem praised the officer, adding,This goes to show the assaults that our ICE officers and law enforcement are under every single day.Hundreds of supporters attended a vigil this evening in support of Good. While the U.S. Justice Department will never criminally charge the agent who killed Good, the agent could potentially be prosecuted after the current president leaves office, and state prosecutors could potentially charge the officer responsible with a homicide crime, if they found the shooting to be legally unjustified. Weve dreaded this moment since the early stages of this ICE presence in Minneapolis, Mayor Frey said in a Wednesday press conference. Having seen the video of myself, I want to tell everybody directly that [the DHS claim of self defense] bulls**t. This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed.I have a message for ICE. To ICE, get the f**k out of Minneapolis, Frey continued. We do not want you here. Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some kind of safety, and you are doing exactly the opposite. People are being hurt. Families are being ripped apart. Long-term Minneapolis residents that have contributed so greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy, are being terrorized, and now somebody is dead. Thats on you, and its also on you to leave.Frey urged residents not to respond in any ways that would encourage the federal government to send a military crackdown in response. During a press conference, Gov. Tim Walz (D) called the shooting as preventable and unnecessary.[The presidential] administrations dangerous, sensationalizewd operations are a threat to our public safety, Walz continued. What were seeing is the consequences of governance designed to generate fear, headlines, and conflict. Its governing by reality TV. And today that recklessness caused someone their life.Weve been warning for weeks that the Trump Administrations dangerous, sensationalized operations are a threat to public safety. Reports that she may have been part of the LGBTQ+ community underscore how often the most vulnerable pay the highest price. Her family and the people of Minneapolis deserve a full investigation, real accountability, and decisive action, Robinson added. And we must remove ICE and their terror from all our communities before even more preventable violence occurs.Minnesota State Rep.Leigh Finke (D), the states first outtransgenderlegislator, called Goods killing devastating and placed responsibility for her killing upon the federal government. My reaction is one of great sadness. For those of us here in Minnesota whove been seeing what these federal agents ICE, CBP, others have been doing and how theyve been treating our communities and our neighbors, something like this felt very possible. But weve just had so many tragedies here. Waking up to this news was heartbreaking. Its terrible. Its one too many of these things. That kind of influx of law enforcement, often untrained young people coming in with a mandate to kidnap neighbors and abduct people and deport them, violence is the only way that something like that can go at some point or another,Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
