Gay elder dies after brutal assault outside queer nightclub
A gay California man has died due to injuries from a November assault that authorities believe was a hate crime. The alleged attacker, 25-year-old Sean Wesley Payton Jr., now faces homicide charges.58-year-old Alvin Prasad had been enjoying a Halloween night out with his adult daughter and friends in Lavender Heights, Sacramentos LGBTQ+ district. But the man punched Prasad in the forehead, causing him to fall backward and strike his head on the pavement. Before Prasads death, Payton, the alleged attacker, was already facing felony assault charges with a hate crime allegation and great bodily injury allegation. The Sacramento County District Attorneys Office takes every hate crime seriously, including those targeting members of our LGBTQ+ community, the office told USA Today.Throughout Prasads hospital stay, his daughter maintained a GoFundMe page to raise funds for associated medical bills. She updated the page when he died, writing that when the nurses told her, she immediately started to cry and dropped to the floor.I thought I had a little more time, she wrote. I just wanted to say I love you one more time before he passed. Prasad describes himself in his Instagram bio as Gay & proud. His posts include several countdowns to his retirement. The attack occurred when he had less than a week to go.David Heitstuman, CEO of the Sacramento LGBT Community Center (which is near the scene of the assault), said in a December statement that the brutal attack is part of a string of anti-LGBTQ+ attacks in the area.Weve also learned of several other bias and hate-related incidents in the neighborhood, from an attempt to tear down the Centers Pride flag and broken windows to multiple attacks targeting LGBTQ+ people over the last several months, Heitstuman said.
