Trump admin to monitor human rights given to us by God which dont include LGBTQ+ rights
The U.S. State Department is making official changes first seen in human rights reports issued over the summer, hollowing out support for marginalized groups around the world, including the LGBTQ+ community. In a cable sent to diplomatic posts on Thursday, the State Department ordered a refocus of human rights reports away from torture, politically motivated killings, and the persecution of minority groups to a Heritage Foundation wish list emphasizing conservative social and religious priorities, mixed with a one-sided defense of free speech. We are saying enough is enough, said Tommy Pigott, a spokesman for the department, in a press briefing reported by The Washington Post.New reports will provide an accounting of the chemical or surgical mutilation of children with gender-transition procedures, the prevalence of euthanasia, and state-subsidized abortions, according to another State Department official. This effectively categorizes health care as a human rights violation. Embassies and consulates will collect data on other governments affirmative action policies, highlighting those that provide preferential treatment based on gender or race. Data on arrests or official investigations or warnings related to speech will also be culled from other countries. The United States remains committed to the Declaration of Independences recognition that all men are endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable rights, said another senior State Department official. New reports will focus on rights given to us by God, our creator, not by governments. The change in emphasis was first seen in the annual human rights report for 2024 issued by Trumps State Department over the summer. It included no mention of LGBTQ+ rights violations and abuses. Initially prepared by the Biden administration, the report was delayed for months while the State Department removed any references to categories of human rights violations not explicitly required by statute.State Department employees were ordered to cut references to gender-based violence, environmental justice, restrictions on political participation, government corruption, sexual violence against children, and violations of the rights of LGBTQ+ and disabled people, among scores of other human rights categories. The changes were made to fit the view and vision of the current president, said then-State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce. In just one egregious example, sections on Uganda and Hungary made no mention of those countries sweeping anti-LGBTQ+ laws and restrictions on LGBTQ+ rights. It is deliberate erasure, said Jessica Stern, a former Biden administration special envoy for LGBTQ+ and intersex rights.A senior State Department official called the 2024 reports a good preview of what to expect next year.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
