Sugar and Spice, the twin contestants of RuPaul's Drag Race season 15 who were the most-followed drag artists on TikTok for several years, have officially gone their separate ways. Over the weekend, Sugar shared a statement announcing her new drag name, explaining the reasons behind the rebrand, and seemingly hinting at how bad things had gotten with Spice as they continued to present themselves as a duo.Sugar wrote, "Introducing Sugar Solay. Not just a name change, but a re-birth and arrival of the individualized light that's been lying dormant inside of my me.""For the past few years, I've grown to feel disconnected from the initial 'y2k bimbo' character I was hiding behind," the Drag Race star added, clearly referencing the Y2K bimbo personas that she presented as one half of Sugar and Spice. "I knew there was much more to my consciousness as an artist, and it was up to me to do the inner work and unlock my own divinity. Solay was waiting for me until I awoke to my true essence and broke free from the fear of being seen as my spiritual and whimsical self."Sugar then revealed her inspirations behind the new drag name. "Solay is a re-spelling of the French name Soleil which means the sun and represents warmth + positivity. I will always be the Sugar of 'Sugar and Spice,' but Solay is my own personal extension of source energy. She's the gift I have received for committing to my higher, most aligned path. She's been the sun in my darkest moments and now I'm ready to share her with you all I hope I can lead the way for other blocked creatives/aspiring artists to reclaim their own magnificence. As the competition went on, the twins were perceived by the fans and their season 15 sisters as somewhat immature but ultimately innocuous, though they did try to quit the show together instead of lip syncing for their lives and being separated by a decision from Mama Ru of who got to stay and who had to sashay away.In Untucked, eventual crowned winner Sasha Colby was shown talking them off a proverbial ledge and insisting that it would be unfair to their experience on the show if they simply gave up and didn't allow whoever got to stay to complete her own Drag Race run. Despite Sasha's wise advice, the twins moved forward with their paired-up choreographed lip sync rather than engaging in an actual lip sync for your life where each queen attempts to outperform the other.But as the twins' chaotic performance to "You Better Run" by Pat Benatar ended, RuPaul told Spice to stay and asked Sugar to sashay away effectively ending her journey in episode 4. Spice continued in the competition until episode 9.Now, it appears that the twins themselves are choosing to sashay away from each other in pursuit of an "individualized light that's been lying dormant" inside at least one of them.
