A hotel misgendered & humiliated a lesbian restroom user. Now the hotel is paying the price.
The Liberty Hotel a five-star Boston hotel that lied about removing a lesbian couple from a womens restroom after mistaking one of the women for a man reached a settlement with the couple by guaranteeing to update its nondiscrimination training and policies and donate $10,000 to an LGBTQ+ organization.In early May, a security guardentered one of the hotels womens restrooms and demanded that Ansley Baker exit a stall, accusing her of being a man and forcing her to show ID to prove her gender. While escorting Baker and her partner out of the restroom, other women waiting in line for the facilitiescalled Baker a creep and demanded that she be ejected from the hotel, which the guard did. On Monday, the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) announced a settlement, requiring the hotel to donate $10,000 to an LGBTQ+ organization, update its nondiscrimination training and policies, and post a nondiscrimination statement in its lobby, GO MAG reported.In a statement, MCAD said the couple were stereotyped, harassed, and removed. They were denied services, subjected to demeaning treatment in front of other patrons of the hotel, and falsely accused of actions they did not commit, which is not only degrading, but unjust according to Massachusetts civil rights law.Liberty Hotel General Manager Mark Fischer issued an apology to the couple on Monday, stating. On behalf of the Liberty Hotel, I want to offer another apology to Ansley Baker and Liz Victor for the incident that occurred. We deeply regret that our initial statement may have created unintended impressions about the actions of Ansley and Liz. That was not our intent. Baker and Victor plan to move forward with a civil lawsuit against the hotel for publishing a false and defamatory statement about them, which implied that they were involved in some lewd behavior while allegedly sharing a restroom stall.In an interview with WBZ-TV, Baker said the hotels apology doesnt personally mean much to her or her partner, even though it likely means a lot to other people. Bakers partner, Liz Victor,said she wants to hold the hotel responsible for its actions and guarantee that such falsehoods arent spread about the hotels patrons again in the future.Since 2016, Massachusetts state law has allowedall people to use restrooms and locker rooms that are most aligned with their gender identity.
