Mary Beth Barone is taking her comedic skills to Netflix. The Overcompensating star and comedian is releasing her first hour-long special called Galaxy Brain on the streamer. Ky Newman will direct, and the special will tape at the New York University Skirball Center on March 19, reports Deadline. This, however, is not Barone's first comedy special; she self-released a 40-minute set called Thought Provoking to YouTube in 2024, not long before the release of Overcompensating. That hit 2025 Prime Video series catapulted her and series creator Benito Skinner into mainstream success, alongside their fellow queer castmates Owen Thiele, Wally Baram, and Holmes all of whom appeared on the 2025 Out100 list. The show centers on a group of young adults at the fictional Yates University, navigating the growing pains of college life.Overcompensating was recently renewed for a second season, but it's unclear when the show will make its official return. In the meantime, the Barone and Skinner will continue to host their popular podcast Ride. When the second season was announced, Skinner sent a statement to Variety that said, "I have been so overwhelmed by the insane response to the show, and feel so damn lucky to go back to Yates University with Amazon MGM Studios, A24, Strong Baby, and this legendary cast for Season 2!! PLAY SUPER BASS :)."
