Broadway revival of 'Rocky Horror' casts gay star as Dr. Frank-N-Furter
Fans of The Rocky Horror Picture Show can rest easy now that they know who is going to be at the helm of its highly anticipated Broadway revival. Luke Evans, the out actor who portrayed Gaston in the live-action remake of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, is set to make his Broadway debut as the lead role, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. The musical, which is directed by the Tony-winning director of Oh, Mary!, Sam Pinkleton, is set to take over Studio 54, with preview performances beginning in March 2026 and an opening night on April 23. "Im giddy to crack this untamable classic open with the razor-sharp Luke Evans at the center. And I hope to do at Studio 54 what The Rocky Horror Show has done for people around the world for decades open a dimension to another possible reality," Pinkleton said in the official press release. "It seriously is the honor of a lifetime to bring the freakiest people Ive ever met into the freakiest theatre Ive ever been in to revisit the freakiest show theres ever been. No pressure, of course."The director continued, "Rocky Horror is, to me, a sublime, ridiculous, giant-hearted act of love a trashy little musical that means so many things to generations of tender weirdos with mascara streaming down their faces. I hope we can make something joyous, unfathomable, straight from outer space and I can't wait to welcome, really WELCOME you into the slimy tentacles of Studio 54."Evans, a 2024 Out cover star, is no stranger to the stage. He appeared in Rent and Miss Saigon on the West End before cementing a career as a Hollywood leading man in The Clash of the Titans, The Hobbit, and Fast and Furious 6.The show, created by Richard O'Brien, first hit the stage back in 1973 at the Royal Court Theatre in London. (The film version, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which featured an unforgettable Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, came out in 1975.) This production will be the third time the show has landed on Broadway the first was in 1975, followed by a revival in 2000. The show's original creator shared a statement, expressing his excitement about the new production. "It is music to my ears to hear that a cast of very fine actors is on its way to NYC in order to play lets dress-up and make-believe, sing and dance, and uplift the hearts of all those who enjoy the gift of free-thinking and the pleasure of love," he said. "Break out the fishnets and lets have a party."Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Eastern on Friday, October 31. Learn more at roundabouttheatre.org.
