Bowen Yang isn't going to let a little exposed skin stop him from roasting J.K. Rowling!The Saturday Night Live star returned for the season premiere of the legendary sketch comedy show's 51st season this weekend, where he once again went viral for a Weekend Update character.The season premiere aired Saturday, with Bad Bunny hosting and Doja Cat as the musical guest. But it was Yang who made the biggest splash of the night, both with his great character work and a surprise wardrobe malfunction.During Weekend Update, Yang came out to the desk dressed as Dobby, the house elf from the Harry Potter books and films, and weighed in on that author's transphobia.As soon as he joined the desk, Dobby was visibly nervous. "Why would Dobby be scared, sir? Dobby's just about to publicly weigh in on trans people, that's all," Yang told the Weekend Update hosts, referencing the feud between Rowling and former Harry Potter actor Emma Watson. "Master sent Dobby to go on the telly and define once and for all what a woman is, sir."As background, Watson, who played Hermione Granger in the films, said in a recent interview that she still loves Rowling and is "grateful" towards her, despite their opposing views and comments on trans rights. Rowling replied on X, saying that Watson is "ignorant of how ignorant she is" and scoffed at her offer for a dialogue."Adults can't expect to cosy up to an activist movement that regularly calls for a friend's assassination, then assert their right to the former friend's love, as though the friend was in fact their mother," Rowling wrote. "Emma is rightly free to disagree with me and indeed to discuss her feelings about me in public but I have the same right, and I've finally decided to exercise it."On SNL, Dobby was there to give his point of view. Unfortunately, once he accidentally revealed that Rowling is his master, he felt he had to punish himself. As he self-flagellated by banging his head against the Weekend Update desk, Dobby then suffered a wardrobe malfunction, with one of his shoulder straps becoming undone, revealing Yang's chest."Oh, Dobby's come undone," Yang quipped. "Sorry! My fatigues are not well-made!"Dobby wasn't done showing off his body. A short while later, the house elf launched himself over the desk so he could punish himself by banging his head into the camera filming Weekend Update. As he flipped over the table, he flashed the cameras and struggled to keep his clothes from entirely falling off.When asked why he kept hurting himself, Yang replied, "Why? Dobby doesn't know. Perhaps because house elves are somehow always the problem, even though we're only 1 percent of the population. But house elves aren't the victims; Master Rowling is. She gets so much hate mail."Dobby held up one example of hate mail, a shirt with Rowling's face edited to have a short, blue haircut with shaved sides that said "They K. Rowling."Weekend Update co-host Colin Jost then reminded Dobby that, per the rules of the Harry Potter universe, because his master gave him a piece of clothing, he is free.Yang, who returned for his sixth season at SNL this year, has had several Weekend Update characters go viral during his tenure.
