Boulet Brothers on Dragula: Titans S2, costume fails, and filling Elviras shoes
Get ready, uglies, because the most gargantuan drag, filth, horror, and glamour-filled season of The Boulet Brothers Dragula: Titans yet is premiering on AMC+ and Shudder on October 7. From the looks of the all-new trailer, this motley crew of drag monsters will be pushed to their limits and the cauldron seems filled to the brim with a whole lot of bad blood, cold sweat, and emotional tears.Touted as bigger, darker, and more unrelenting than anything weve done before, The Boulet Brothers Dragula: Titans season 2 sees the return of 14 cutthroat competitors, most of whom are finalists and/or fan favorites from previous seasons. With a crown, the $100,000 grand prize, a headlining spot on a forthcoming world tour, and the title of Queen of the Underworld at stake, these redemption-hungry Titans are undoubtedly going to clash.Dracmorda and Swanthula, the macabre masterminds behind The Boulet Brothers' Dragula: Titans and its flagship series, have been busy horror hosts these days. Not only did they just embark on The Boulet Brothers Dragula 666 Official U.S. Tour (a sacrilegious stage show you totally missed out on if you didnt go), theyve also been anointed as the official hosts of this years Knotts Scary Farm, where theyll be making special meet-and-greets on select nights. Not only that, but it is All Hallows Eve season, which means theyll also be throwing their annual Halloween Ball in Los Angeles as well as a spook-tacular Halloween House Party in Boston on October 31.Just days after completing their 22-date U.S. tour, the Emmy-nominated diabolical duo took some time to chat with Out about the selection process of their returning contestants in The Boulet Brothers Dragula: Titans season 2, how they might fare in one of their own fearsome extermination challenges if the tables were turned, and the over-the-moon excitement they have for their Knotts Scary Farm gig. See on Instagram Out: The Boulet Brothers Dragula: Titans season 2 sees the return of 14 former contestants. Was it an easy selection process or did the two of you ever have strong disagreements about who should and shouldn't return?Dracmorda: I think in general we're pretty aligned on our decisions, because we see the clay that we're molding in a similar way. With this season in particular, we really wanted it to be a monumental season that only happens every couple of years. And so we decided to pick, firstly, from the top three from all the seasons of the entire series. So that was our first thing. Then outside of that, we were like, Who are there people that are iconic to Dragula? Meaning, when you think of the brand, their faces come to mind. We need a couple of those as well. Lastly, we looked at people we thought had a lot of potential and great star quality, but they weren't quite there in their season but they've grown since their season.Your press release describes The Boulet Brothers Dragula: Titans Season 2 as the biggest, darkest and most unrelenting season thats ever been filmed. One of my favorite aspects of the show are the extermination challenges. When youre cooking up twisted ways to torment your contestants, have you ever been told that some of your extermination ideas are too extreme or too dangerous?Swanthula: Well, we have a great relationship with the overarching companies like AMC+ and Shudder. We don't get notes per se. They want us to do us. So they really put a lot of trust in us. And I think that's why you get a very true vision of what the crossroads of queerness, drag, and horror looks like. Now, do we have conflicts about things being too extreme? Absolutely. In-house. Like, we have this war board meeting every season where we talk about everything from the competitors to the fright feats to the exterminations. Historically, Drac likes to take it to an extreme that I have to pull back from. I'm like, Well, we don't want them actually dead or legitimately lost in the ocean, so we cant really do that per se.Dracmorda: That's the danger of owning a production company: the only person that's going to say no to you is you. So it can be dangerous. If the tables were ever turned and you were contestants on your own show, is there an extermination challenge from the history of The Boulet Brothers Dragula that would absolutely devastate you or one you might flat out refuse to do?Dracmorda: For me, I would hate to do a lot of them, but there is no way that I would not do them. Theres plenty of Xanax in the world. Like, its all about facing your fears. And I would do whatever I had to do. I would never not do a challenge.Swanthula: For me, the physical stuff is a thrill. I'm a thrill seeker. I'll do anything. But the one thing that is my Achilles heel, because it's involuntary, is if I have to eat some kind of nasty concoction that someone brewed up to make me vomit. Like, that's what's going to happen. It's so easy for that to happen for me. The Boulet Brothers Dragula: Titans season 2 cast and judges.Shudder/AMC+Do you see yourselves building up to an all-winners season of Titans? Like, maybe when you have 13 seasons under your belt, 13 winners might be a good number to do it. But do you think it would be a good idea to bring back the winner of every single season when you have enough monsters to bring back?Swanthula: I love that you just put that into words: 13 seasons with 13 winners. Like, okay, that's going to float around in my mind now for a while. [Laughs]Dracmorda: Yea, we've talked about it. It really depends because sometimes the winners, they're like, Phew, I got out of that experience and I won and nothing weird happened. So I don't know if I want to risk it again. Because what are the chances that you win a second time? So it really depends on the cast and if the winners would want to do it. I definitely think some of them would, but some of the others, I'm not sure.Another favorite element of the show is, of course, the drama. There must be days and hours of footage per episode. So I can only imagine what it's like whittling all that down to a 60-minute episode. You must have to sacrifice so much juicy footage from the lab or the cauldron when you edit these things down.Swanthula: That happens every episode.Dracmorda: We film for three or four days per episode, so you've got to imagine there is a ton of footage, and it's a real process to get it down to an hour. There's a lot of stuff you want to include, but I think we've gotten a little better about killing babies as they call it.You guys must have eyes and ears everywhere. You're not in the cauldron or the lab, for example. So I would imagine youre immediately shown dailies or your team provides intel, like, so-and-so fought with so-and-so.Swanthula: Drac and I are very hands-on in the filming and the production of the show. So we're not in the room, but we have eyes and ears right there. We can watch what's happening as it's happening, or we'll just look at the footage in the dailies, which we get. And also some of the other producers will inform us, like, Oh, this happened and it was amazing. And that will guide the consecutive episodes and the story arc.Dracmorda: Actually, you see something in the trailer that came out today that shows a little behind the scenes where we react live on set to conversations that are happening outside of the soundstage. And we confront the person, so you'll see how closely connected to it we are. The only times we're usually not on set is if we have to get in drag ourselves or we're in a meeting. So otherwise we're on set and we're around. And even when we're getting ready, sometimes we'll leave our headsets on so we can hear all the conversations happening in all the different rooms. If something sparks your interest, you're like, Oop, mark that down. We need to do that.Swanthula: Oftentimes, you'll forget that youre miked. And they'll leave the stage and continue to talk and not realize that theres probably like 10 people listening to everything that they're saying. Its kind of incredible. See on Instagram As the show goes on, does it get more challenging for you to come up with unique themes, ideas, or new twists on some of your traditional challenges?Swanthula: It's been a long road with Dragula so far. Weve been producing the show now for a better part of 10 years. But I have to say this: We have not come to the bridge yet where it is hard or difficult or challenging for us to come up with challenges. Like, Drac and I are in a never-ending creative conversation. We both have overactive imaginations and we support each other's kind of craziness. So it ping pongs back and forth. And if anything, I feel like we have ideas for at least three or four more seasons, without even thinking about it.Do you have a wish list of guest judges that you haven't been able to obtain yet or maybe some who are interested, but they just haven't been available?Dracmorda: I wanted to get Jamie Lee Curtis on a Halloween House Party episode for a while. She was interested. It's really about finding the right timing. Because a lot of these people are extremely busy and we only shoot at a certain point of time in the year. So there have been people who have just not been available. I wanted to have Kim Petras on a couple of years ago. John Waters, I'd love to have him on too. I don't know why that's never happened yet.Swanthula: John Waters was at the top of my list, but we've talked about Stephen King. Also, I think Fairuza Balk would be a great guest judge and I think people would love to see that.If I may throw one into the mix, I would flip if you ever got Siouxsie Sioux.Dracmorda: Oh, yeah. That's another one I was going to say, although I don't think she would do it. I don't know.I would die if that ever happened.Swanthula: Your corpse would be right next to mine. I used to give that as an answer every time someone would ask that question, but I've now just given up and I accept that she's kind of a hermit and has disappeared from public life. The Boulet Brothers in promotional image for The Boulet Brothers' Dragula: Titans season 2. Scotty KirbyIf there was a deceased horror legend from the past you could bring back from the dead to be a guest judge, who would it be?Dracmorda: Oh, Vincent Price for sure. Vampyra too, definitely. Divine. That would be good.Swanthula: Oh my God. I'm gonna say you nailed it with Vincent Price. Like, just the career span is huge and I think, what a queen, and I just love him.Dracmorda: Yeah, maybe James Whale. That's a little deeper cut, but I think I'd love to see what his thoughts were on the evolution of queerness and horror. You two always serve such wickedly stunning outfits every time you hit the runway. How far in advance do you plan out your outfits for the season? You must have so many people wanting to design stuff for you.Dracmorda: When we get into pre-production, that's when I usually start trying to figure it all out. We don't have a lot of designers reaching out to us, believe it or not. I think that they think we have our people that we use and that's it. So we don't get a lot of people hitting us up like that. And there's a couple of designers we work with regularly. Mindy L'Amour is probably the one we work with the most. Marco's Wigs in Italy does all of our hair. And usually, maybe three months out from when we were actually wearing it. That changes sometimes because disasters do occur. So sometimes you'll see us wearing an outfit on one episode that it absolutely was not intended for.Swanthula: Here's a story from Season 6. Wearing latex sucks. It looks incredible, but it's very uncomfortable. Couple it with drag, and it's a living nightmare. And we shoot for 10 to 12 hours a day. So we had this one episode and we had the biggest wigs we could be wearing that season. And these skin-tight skeleton latex catsuits. So I lube up my body as one does and get in my latex. And I'm ready, I'm heeled, I have my claws on. I'm blinded and my giant wig is there and I'm walking down the hall to Drac's green room. And I hear, Oh my God, and this sound and I'm like, What's happening in there? And Drac's assistant just pulled the jumpsuit the wrong way and the whole thing just snapped like a rubber band and ripped right up the back. So, yea, I had to change. A three-hour snafu because we had to rearrange all of the costumes for the rest of the season because we couldn't wear the catsuit. But you just got to keep it moving. When youre shooting your floor shows, so many of your contestants have these gore effects that leave blood and guts all over the floor. It must take hours to clean all that up and then redo it all over again.Dracmorda: It's horrible. It takes so long. You'll be sitting there for one floor show that you watch on the show that's like five minutes long. But its like an entire day for us. They do their thing. And then you have to clean the whole stage again so when the next person comes out, it's fresh. Sometimes you'll have to do a second take. So they have to do it all over again. The worst part about it is the smell. Because a lot of people like to use real props. So when someone comes out and covers themselves in fish guts or whatever it is, it's bad. And it stays with the set for a couple of days. So that's the worst part of it to me. See on Instagram Youre the official hosts of this years Knotts Scary Farm and youre set to make special appearances this year. Does this mean you're going to eventually fill the shoes of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, and do a regular stage show maybe starting next year?Dracmorda: Flat out, the answer is yes. We want to do a classic, horrifying Halloween show. We want it to be a variety show from all sorts of different talents, but we really want to bring the focus back to classic Halloween and horror. We want to bring the fear into the stage show. And we're really excited about it, honestly. This year was our introduction to the crowd. Next year, we'll be moving into a different direction.Swanthula: They're integrating us this year the best they can. What a natural marriage in hell for us to be there. And we did their Nightmares Revealed event, and I was like, Okay, this is the moment. This is when we're going to be in front of a completely different audience. And there were like 3,000 people there and they ate it up. It was amazing.Dracmorda: I think we'll bring something different. There's always been a horror host at Knotts: Elvira, Wolfman Jack, Sinister Seymour. Obviously, no one could fill Elviras shoes, but I think we'll bring our own interpretation of hosting Knotts. We're really into the history and the IP and the ideas and the concepts. So it's probably one of the things I'm happier about that's happened in our career.Swanthula: Oh my God, I can't overstate it. It's something that we've been trying to really maneuver through for the past couple of years. And this year it's coming to fruition. That's why your comment about Season 13 scratches the edge of my brain because sometimes things take time to manifest. But this one we are super excited about it. I think I'm more excited about the Knotts marriage than I was about the Emmy nominations.Elvira did her Knotts stage show for 31 years. Are you guys in it for the long haul? In fact, what do you envision for the future of The Boulet Brothers brand and how long do you see yourselves doing drag? What do you see yourself tapping into next? Perhaps feature-length horror films?Dracmorda: Obviously, we love being horror hosts, so we'll do that for a million years, hopefully, two lifetimes. But as far as where things are leaning, I think our career is taking us into a scripted place. So feature films, specials for streamers, things like that. I think you'd see a different side of us, you know, like the type of horror that we would want to make, I think would be exciting for people to see.The Boulet Brothers' Dragula: Titans season 2 premieres Tuesday, October 7 on Shudder and AMC+.
