Hasan Piker: Trans people would not be safer under a Kamala Harris administration
Hasan Piker quickly became one of the most prominent Twitch streamers during the last election cycle, serving as a progressive antidote to the rise of right-wing talking heads online. But he's found himself in hot water after recent comments made during a livestream, where he said that trans people would not be safer if Kamala Harris were president.Piker made the comments on Monday while watching a clip of a conversation between New York Times opinion columnist Ezra Klein and author Ta-Nehisi Coates on The Ezra Klein Show podcast; Klein said that trans people would be better off with Harris in office, to which the streamer vehemently disagreed, citing to the former vice president's alleged "concessions about transphobia" and "leaning into anti-trans narratives" in her career. (@) "The reason why [life for trans people would be better during a Harris administration] is wrong is twofold: Number one, at that point, all youve done is, once again, concede to the right-wing framing on trans people presenting some outsized harm to the American population," Piker said during the stream. "Youve leaned into it, and in that process of leaning into it you have normalized it. You have legitimized the claims of your opponent."He goes on to say, "Number two: Your opponent in the aftermath of that recognition will just turn around and say, See, these fucking pro-trans losers even recognize Im right. Vote for me. I will deal with the trans people with the integrity necessary."Not only do you look hypocritical, but you ended up fucking losing for that reason. Because you can never defeat the Republicans on hate-mongering, you just can't."Piker is likely referring to Harris's most recent comments in her memoir, 107 Days, where she said she has some "concerns" about trans athletes. "I agree with the concerns expressed by parents and players that we have to take into account biological factors such as muscle mass and unfair student athletic advantage when we determine who plays on which teams, especially in contact sports," she wrote. "With goodwill and common sense, I believe we can come up with ways to do this, without vilifying and demonizing children. The liberal streamer continued to argue that during the Biden administration, Republican lawmakers across the nation were consistently introducing new anti-trans legislation, saying that they were "aggressively hitting the anti-trans narratives and also successfully implementing anti-trans legislation at the state legislature level already, building the fucking framework for what came next." He is referring to the current administration's assault on LGBTQ+ rights, which includes the authors of Project 2025 petitioning the FBI to classify "trans ideology" as a "domestic threat," and completely gutting the LGBTQ+ youth suicide hotline, among many other actions.Harris also made headlines from another revelation in her memoir, in which she said that she did not choose Pete Buttigieg as her running mate because she believed a ticket with a Black woman and an out gay man would be "too big of a risk."
