Grindr addresses rumors of an outage linked to Charlie Kirk's memorial service
Social media was set ablaze when an account on X uploaded a post the day after Charlie Kirk's memorial service that read: "BREAKING: Charlie Kirk's memorial caused a SEVERE Grindr outage in Arizona." The post also included screenshots of a heat map that was concentrated in Phoenix close to Glendale, where the memorial was held and a website called Downdetector, which provides real-time reports of outages for various websites. The post quickly garnered thousands of likes and reposts, spreading to other platforms like Reddit and Facebook. (@) In response, the fact-checking website Snopes noted, "Downdetector's information is crowdsourced and any user can report an outage," adding that Grindr itself did not report an outage. A representative for Grindr echoed those points in a statement for Out, which reads, "As noted on Grindr's status page, there were no outage reports on September 21." The app's status page reports when the platform has issues and notifies users when they get resolved. But there was no report for September 21. @hopeisforpeople Replying to @rae.rae.red You cant make this stuff up lol #charliekirk #phoenix #arizona #statefarmstadium #fyp Around the same time that the X post was uploaded, a TikToker shared a video that included an apparent screenshot of the Sniffies map at the stadium where the memorial took place. In the video, he claims that the screenshot, which appears to show several Sniffies users lurking on the app, was taken around the time of the service.Like the claims about a Grindr outage, insinuations about Sniffies users congregating at the service were unverified. But that didn't stop rumors spreading across social media like wildfire. (@) The memorial service, which was attended by top political officials like President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, was said to have drawn tens of thousands of people. It started at around 11 a.m. and lasted for approximately five hours.
