After Little Mix, Jade can finally make music 'just for me'
Jade Thirlwall, who mononymously goes by Jade, was scared that people would be upset at her debut single, Angel of My Dreams, a scalding diss track where she expressed her frustrations with the music industry machine. I definitely expected more of a kind of Marmite response to the song, the former Little Mix member tells Out over a Zoom. She was cognizant of how a song like this would sound and was ready for any controversy it might spur as she felt people would see her debut single as her complaining or being ungrateful for her success. But as she puts it, she loves the conversation it created. Ive done this long enough now that I know the game, she says. Im in control and I know how it works. The British pop star is the last of the Little Mix trio to release her solo music, which is coming in the form of her debut album, That's Showbiz Baby. Jade served as one-third of one of the best-selling girl groups of all time for a decade. In that time, the group sold over 75 million records worldwide and went on to win a number of esteemed awards, including British Group at the Brit Awards back in 2021 making it the first girl group ever to receive the award in 41 years. In 2022, the women put their world domination on pause to announce a hiatus (which for many groups is a death knell). While they're focusing on solo endeavors at the moment, each of the women has quelled their fans fears and said they plan to return to being a group when the time is ready. JadeConor CunninghamBut for now, the three of these musicians are taking their time to try their hands at solo careers. First was Leigh-Anne Pinnock, then Perrie Edwards, and now, Jade. She says that it took her the longest to put out music because she needed a moment to find herself. Ive devoted my whole life to Little Mix and rightfully so, because I loved it with my whole heart, but it took me a minute to learn how to write music that wasnt just for them anymore, it was just for me and tap into the Jade sound, the former girl group member shares. The more I got into [making music], the more liberated I felt and the nerves evolved into confidence.Jade came out of the gate swinging with the aforementioned debut single, Angel of My Dreams, which went on to receive widespread critical acclaim. Then, she went on a hit parade with back-to-back banger after banger. After her debut, she released Midnight Cowboy (featuring some spoken word by her friend, Ncuti Gatwa); Fantasy showed off her artistry in the disco genre with a music video directed by the auteur David LaChapelle; then the hits kept on coming with IT GIRL, FUFN (Fuck You For Now), Plastic Box, and earlier this week, Unconditional. With the amount of songs shes released so far, its hard to believe there is still good material left on the album. Without a doubt, there are plenty of new songs to enjoy from the pop star. Given her history in one of the biggest girl groups of all time, did Jade feel like she already had a leg up in the industry, or did she feel that she was starting from scratch creating something of her own? Ive treated this process like I was starting again. I didn't want to fool myself into sort of false pretense that just because Little Mix was big, all these things were going to be handed to me on a plate," she said. And thats helped her be a better artist. She says shes always made her solo music with the mentality that she has to prove to people that she is amazing on her own. Just because I was in a group, doesnt mean I was allowed in certain rooms, she adds. My solo work is a different kind of success, its about writing music that Im proud of, that speaks to me.Her music is already resonating with a large swath of people Little Mix fans and not but especially the LGBTQ+ community, who adore her nostalgic, disco-tinged aesthetic that reminds them of the divas of yore while still remaining fresh, imaginative, and exciting. In addition to capturing this audience, shes also aligned herself with the right up-and-coming talent. Earlier this summer, she served as an opener for two of Chappell Roans shows in Europe. Jade says she intended to reach out about potentially performing with Chappell and then Chappells team reached out to her. She wanted me there and that felt really good, Jade says. It was a very quick yes because I respect her so much.As for what stateside Mixers have been yelling about for years: A Little Mix tour in the U.S. she says shes open to the idea and knows how much the fans have been clamoring for performances on this side of the pond. But itll be after the singers feel the time is right, and the fans are ready for a reunion. For now, they will be focusing on proving themselves as solo artists. That's Showbiz Baby is now out.
