Kate McKinnon says sapphics love Benedict Cumberbatch and Andy Samberg
Kate McKinnon and the cast of the new movie, The Roses, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, are kicking off their promotional tour with a bit of chaos. In an interview with MTV UK, the interviewer asks the comedian to explain why, despite playing a straight character married to fellow SNL alum Andy Samberg, and her own yearning for Cumberbatch, sapphic people love these two men. @mtvuk Theyre beefcakes so true, Kate whos seen these icons in #TheRoses already? #katemckinnon #ncutigatwa #benedictcumberbatch #mtvmovies "Well, they're good guys," she starts out saying. "They're beefcakes, I love a handsome guy as much as the next les. I was also so excited to join the great tradition of les comedians being sexually aggressive with straight men," she joked. McKinnon goes on to say that the trope was "pioneered" by Jane Lynch in the work of Judd Apatowreferencing The 40-Year-Old Virgin (but she also does something similar in Glee, Only Murders in the Building, and so many of her other roles where she plays straight). She is then showered with praise from the two co-stars she's joined by during the interview Ncuti Gatwa and Zo Chao, as well as the interviewer who all say she does a great job holding up that tradition in the movie. In this new film, which just hit theaters this past Friday, Colman and Cumberbatch play a married couple whose seemingly picture perfect life is upended by their competitiveness and hidden resentments towards one another. These issues bleed into their marriage, their family, and their friendsthe latter of which are played by McKinnon and Samberg.
