The second that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement on Tuesday in a post uploaded to Instagram, phones were flooded with push notifications from news outlets breaking the news, screams were heard from Swifties in every office, and social media was set ablaze. One of those social media platforms was Reddit and more specifically, the Gaylor Swift subreddit, which went private shortly after the announcement. See on Instagram The niche community online is comprised of Swift's fans who believe that the pop star is secretly queer. The official subreddit, which boasted over 50,000 members before it closed itself off to the public, advertised itself as an online space "for thoughtful discussion and examination of Taylor Swift, including queer readings, themes and motifs in her work and public persona. After the page went private, any Reddit user who is not a part of the community is locked out with a message saying that only accepted members can view and contribute to the subreddit.This conspiracy theory stemmed from her friendship with model Karlie Kloss in the mid 2010s following her split with DJ Calvin Harris. In 2014, what became known as Kissgate took place. At a concert for The 1975, a fan claimed to have seen Kloss and Swift kissingbut the video captured was too grainy to tell and a rep for Swift told Entertainment Tonight that the claim was "crap." Fans also romantically linked Swift and former Glee star, Diana Agron.Throughout the years, there have been a few times when Swift was vocal about her support of the LGBTQ+ communitywhich was taken to a much further extent by her queer fans. At the TIME 100 Gala in 2019, she performed her song "New Years Day" and changed the lyrics from "I want your midnights" to "I want her midnights." Later that same year, she put out "You Need to Calm Down," a song in support of the queer community and featured prominent LGBTQ+ icons in the music video. In 2023, she seemed to have hint at the media's speculation of her sexuality given her close friendships to womennamely her "squad" that appeared in both the "Bad Blood" and whose names appeared as easter eggs in the "Look What You Made Me Do" video, which Kloss was a part of. In the liner notes for her album 1989 (Taylor's Version1989 (Taylor's Version), she wrote: I swore off dating and decided to focus only on myself, my music, my growth, and my female friendships. If I only hung out with my female friends, people couldnt sensationalize or sexualize that right? I would learn later on that people could and people would.The general public's reaction almost immediately after Swift and Kelce posted their engagement photos was a mix of excitement and disappointment, but the latter mainly came from the Gaylor community. People were sharing screenshots of users' posts on the subreddit to X. "Not to be dramatic but my breathing has been near-panic attack levels for two hours," one post read. "I know all the logistical reasons why this is fine, whether she's bi and really loves him or doing performance art or whatever. But ugh, it's just knocked me on my ass a little today." (@) Another screenshot someone shared showed a Reddit user questioning the whole basis of their conspiracy theory. "I'm genuinely scared watching how serious Taylor and Travis are becoming. Sometimes I wonder, what if they actually got married?? What if she's really not queer at all??" another post reads. (@) Some made jokes about the situation and the subreddit's reaction to the news. (@) But it seems like Kloss and Swift are on somewhat good terms as the supermodel (who is married to Joshua Kushner) was spotted in the crowd at the Eras Tour back in 2023, singing and dancing along to "You Need to Calm Down." (@) Who knows what goes on behind closed doors, but there's a fervent subset of her fan base that still believes in this conspiracy theory and will find any way to push their agenda. They will have the chance to continue the conversation when Swift releases her newest album, The Life of a Showgirl, on Oct. 3.
