SNL's first trans writer, Celeste Yim, leaves the show
Celeste Yim shared that they are leaving the writer's room at Saturday Night Live after five years. Since being hired as a writer for the show in 2020, Yim was promoted to writing supervisor in 2023. This announcement comes as the show's creator, Lorne Michaels, confirmed that cast changes will happen ahead of the premiere of SNL season 51.Sign up for the Out Newsletter to keep up with what's new in LGBTQ+ culture and entertainment delivered three times a week straight (well) to your inbox!Yim shared the details about the decision to exit SNL in an Instagram post uploaded on Monday, writing:"Lorne hired me over the phone when I was 23 and the job literally made all of my dreams come true BUT it was also grueling and I slept in my office every week," they wrote. "BUT my friends helped me with everything BUT I got yelled at by random famous men BUT some famous girls too BUT I loved it and I laughed every day and its where I grew up."They continued, I hate when other people say this but it's true that I was the first ever out trans person to be a writer for SNL. I always felt honored to be working within the long tradition of queer writing at the show." They jokingly wrote that many people would be surprised to know that Chevy Chase (an early cast member) was nonbinary.Yim also wrote that they felt "powerless to protect trans people in the world but writing connects us and makes us permanent, so its what I will continue to do." See on Instagram Yim went on to thank everyone who supported them, including "every SNL assistant and production crew member who ever made any part of anything I ever wrote."A special mention went out to Bowen Yang, who Yim thanked for "changing [their] life and for making [them] feel normal."Yim closed out their statement thanking their family for their support and then went on to name each of the cast (former and current) and writing staff who they say became their friends. The comments section was overflowing with love and support from the other cast members. "YIM/YANG 4 EVA!!!" Yang wrote, while Heidi Gardner left a comment with sad emojis and wrote, "Love you."
