Marc Maron joins list of comedians to call out Dave Chappelle's transphobia
For years, Dave Chappelle has been known for his anti-trans comments as much as his comedy.Chappelle has been making anti-trans jokes throughout his several comedy specials on Netflix. 2019's Sticks & Stones, 2021's The Closer, 2022's What's In a Name?, and 2023's The Dreamer all included jokes that were considered transphobic by various news outlets and comedians.Chappelle's offensive barbs include calling trans people "confusing" and comparing being trans to pretending to be Asian in Sticks & Stones; declaring that he is on "Team TERF" in The Closer; and saying trans people make him feel like he's talking to a method actor refusing to be called by their real name in The Dreamer. While Chappelle has continued to be supported by Netflix and major awards like the Grammys (he won Best Comedy Album for all four of the Netflix specials mentioned), many of his fellow comedians have been calling him out for his jokes over the years. Here are some of the funny people who have spoken out against Chappelle's not-so-funny anti-trans crusade.Marc MaronSee on InstagramComedian, actor, and podcaster Marc Maron he called out comedian Bill Maher for defending Donald Trump and Dave Chappelle for focusing so much on anti-trans jokes in a recent appearance on Pod Save America."Fascism is good for business. Netflix will just, you know, co-opt anybody that can take that algorithm," Maron said. "I used to do a joke about it Netflix can become 'Reichflix' very quickly."He said that a "pivotal moment" in the streamer's decline was when it decided to continue working with Dave Chappelle despite his continued history of transphobic jokes."When they had pushback from the trans community about Chappelle, they realized after several days that that community was not going to affect their bottom line at all. And they cut 'em loose. That is how fascism works in business," he said, reports The Daily Beast.Wanda SykesSee on InstagramIn 2023, comedian Wanda Sykes was asked by Variety if she thought her Netflix comedy special I'm an Entertainer "balanced out" Chappelle's anti-trans specials.Um, I dont know about balancing it out, because I think what he said was so hurtful and damaging to the trans community, Sykes responded. So yeah, the scale is still tipped, I would say, in their favor. But I know I wanted to say something, because so much has been said on that platform. I definitely want to say something on the other side of it."If you want to give me the label of a 'woke comic,' that's fine," she continued. "That's great. What makes me laugh is that they say that like it's an insult: 'Oh, they're woke.' Thank you!"Jerrod CarmichaelSee on InstagramIn his 2022 special Rothaniel, Jerrod Camrichael said he didn't believe in cancel culture or that Chappelle had been cancelled for his anti-trans views. He said that he thinks "people who offer nothing truthful or meaningful about themselves" often try to create a "boogeyman" they can complain about in society."Chappelle, do you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro? That's the legacy? Your legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans shit? It's an odd hill to die on," he said. "And it's like, hey, bro. Who the fuck are you? Who do you fuck? What do you like to do? Childish jokes aside, who the fuck are you? It's just kind of played. But he's choosing to die on the hill. So, alright, let him."Michelle ButeauSee on InstagramIn her comedy special Michelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall, Michelle Buteau called out Chappelle after making some respectful jokes about a lesbian friend."It can be done. We can tell jokes and stories and not disparage a whole community. We can do that. We can make it funny. We just have to work at it, right?" she said."So, if you guys ever run into Dave Chappelle, can you let him know that shit?" she continued. "I don't think he knows that shit. I don't think we'll ever run into Dave, though, because he is the GOAT. And he's the GOAT if that means 'Going Off About Trans' people.'""Make it funny," she concluded.Hannah GadsbySee on InstagramAfter Netflix was criticized for platforming Chappelle in 2021, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said that having programming like Sex Education, Orange Is the New Black, and Hannah Gadsby's comedy specials balanced things out.Gadsby was not pleased. "Hey, Ted Sarandos! Just a quick note to let you know that I would prefer if you didn't drag my name into your mess," Gadsby wrote in a message on Instagram. "Now I have to deal with even more of the hate and anger that Dave Chappelle's fans like to unleash on me every time Dave gets 20 million dollars to process his emotionally stunted partial world view.""You didn't pay me nearly enough to deal with the real-world consequences of the hate speech dog whistling you refuse to acknowledge, Ted," she added. "Fuck you and your amoral algorithm cult... I do shits with more backbone than you. That's just a joke! I definitely didn't cross a line because you just told the world there isn't one."Joel Kim BoosterSee on InstagramComedian Joel Kim Booster has been calling out Chappelle since back in 2019. That year, he told WNYC radio show All Of It that "it's kind of sad" to see that Chappelle "no longer has that many interesting things to say."Booster said Chappelle "used to have really interesting and prescient things to say about power structures and things like that," but "has been rich for a long time now.""I just don't think he's interested in dismantling that anymore," he said.Trans ComediansSee on InstagramIn January 2025, Chappelle hosted Saturday Night Live. Several trans comedians from the Here to Pee comedy tour gave him advice. Ren Q. Dawe, Mx. Dahlia Belle, Carlos Kareem Windham, Juno Men, and Joe John Sancez III all chimed in with "helpful" tips for Chappelle."Hey Dave, big fan. If you're going to write jokes about trans people, it would be helpful to interact with a few trans folks beyond Pornhub," Man joked."I really respect Dave Chappelle for trying to understand trans people. The first step to success is failure so we're clearly on the right track," Dawe said."The only thing more irritating than trans people constantly shoving our identities down cis people's throats is cis people constantly shoving our identities down their own throats," said Belle.
