'Peacemaker' and its bisexual superhero fight to top of DCU with 99 percent rating
The first episode of Peacemaker season 2 debuted on HBO Max just last week, but reviewers have already gotten a glimpse at the first five episodes, and they are loving what they are seeing. With 60 critics already having weighed in, the second season now sits at 99 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the best-reviewed live-action DC project ever well ahead of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, which currently has the highest rating of any DC movie, at 94 percent, and a number of other popular superhero series.Peacemaker stars John Cena as the titular DC Comics vigilante who "fights for peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it," according to the series synopsis. In addition to his violent approach to carrying out justice, Cena's character, whose civilian name is Christopher Smith, is also a card-carrying bisexual. And after talking about his relationships with men in the first season, the premiere episode of the long-awaited second chapter shows him partaking in a pansexual orgy.Smith, or the Peacemaker, isn't the series' only queer character either: Another central crime-fighting figure, Leota Adebayo, played by Danielle Brooks, is a lesbian. So not only is creator James Gunn's small-screen reimagining of the DC bad boy one of the gayest superhero shows ever, but it's also one of the highest rated.By comparison, other DC Comics-based shows with high ratings hover around the mid-90s on Rotten Tomatoes, including Watchmen at 96 percent, Creature Commandos at 95 percent, and The Penguin at 95 percent. Though, a few single seasons of DC shows, some of which coincidentally also feature queer characters, have gotten 100 ratings.Seasons 3 and 4 of Doom Patrol which starred Matt Bomer as Larry Trainor, or Negative Man, a gay former Air Force pilot who joins a misfit superhero group each sit at 100 percent with 10 and 13 reviews, respectively. And Seasons 5 and 6 of Legends of Tomorrow, which fans may remember featured several queer main characters, also each have 100 percent ratings, with season 5 getting 13 reviews, and season 6 getting 7.Though those shows make an impressive case for LGBTQ+ representation in the DC Universe, neither one has attracted as much attention on the ratings website as the new season of the Cena-led series. With 60 reviews (and counting) deeming the series a 99 percent hit, Peacemaker has generated more critical acclaim than any other DC show or movie to date marking a major win for bisexual defenders of justice everywhere.New episodes of Peacemaker debut on HBO Max at 9 pm ET on Thursdays.
