Duolingo apologizes for J.K. Rowling after German lesson calls her 'cruel'
Duolingo, a language learning app, issued an apology to J.K. Rowling after one of the German lessons on the app used her as an example and called her "cruel."During one of the training sessions on the app, a question asked users, Magst du die Bcher mit Harry Potter als Figur? This translates to: "Do you like books with Harry Potter as a character?" The correct answer was supposed to be "Ja, aber meiner Meinung nach ist die Autorin gemein," which translates to, "Yes, but in my opinion the author is cruel/mean." (@) According to The Independent, a spokesperson confirmed this to be true and issued Rowling an apology. "We apologize for any offense caused and will remove this content." As of this writing, Rowling has yet to make a public statement in response which she is known to do.This incident on Duolingo follows CEO Luis Von Ahn laying off 10 percent of its contracted workforce, which included contractors and writers, after the company announced its plan to become an "AI-first" platform. Ahn recently discussed the company's relationship with AI in an interview with The New York Times, claiming that the move to lay off contract workers to replace them with AI was "not controversial" inside the company. "Externally, as a publicly traded company, some people assume that it's just for profit," he added. "Or that were trying to lay off humans. And that was not the intent at all."Meanwhile, filming for the new Harry Potter series at HBO has commenced with an all-new cast of actors. The original main cast in the film franchise Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have all expressed publicly that they do not share the same views as Rowling and have distanced themselves from her.
