Here's why Helen Mirren says tomatoes are 'bisexual'
Helen Mirren has declared that tomatoes are the newest bicon! On Monday evening, the actress appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon alongside costar Pierce Brosnan to promote Netflix's upcoming film adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club. There, she caused quite a stir with her comments on the bisexuality of fruits and vegetables. While Fallon made salsa for the stars using a tomato he had proudly grown, Mirren offered some gardening advice."Incidentally, I just want to give you a tip about growing tomatoes. You know the little flower? Well, a good way to get a tomato out of a flower is you have to tremble the flower like this," she said, wiggling one bent finger in front of her. "Did you know that?"Fallon started laughing immediately, telling Mirren to "stop doing that" and saying, "I'm not doing thatat all tomy tomatoes!""You've got to. A tomato is a bisexual thing, you see," she repliedinsisting "Well, it is!"as the host, her costar, and the audience erupted in laughter."I looked it up very recently because I had a problem with my tomatoes. It's bisexual, so you have to go around to each tomato, each flower, and go like this," she added, making the motion again, while Fallon tried to hide his embarrassment.Mirren may be on to something. In flowers, the stamen, where pollen is made, is labeled the "male" part, and the pistil, which receives the pollen and produces eggs that develop into seeds, is labeled the "female" part. Tomato flowers, incidentally, have both on the same plant. While this isn't the same thing as being bisexual, tomatoes indeed have both male and female reproductive structures. Therefore, any tomato plant can be a "mother" or "father" to other plants.Watch Mirren's interview below! - YouTube youtu.be
