Rene Rapp 'relieved' to address cheating in new albumbut not everyone is thrilled
Rene Rapp released her sophomore album, Bite Me, on Friday, and one line is creating quite a stir on social media. On Bite Me's final song, Youd Like That Wouldnt You, Rapp sings, And I swear Id never ever, ever, ever cheat again. This line caused an uproar among online users who interpreted it as Rapp addressing her relationship with her ex, Alissa Carrington. Many accused her of being the toxic ex or that shes "glorifying cheating." On the Wednesday episode of Alex Cooper's podcast Call Her Daddy, Rapp was asked about the line. She revealed that she almost didn't put it in the album. It "stressed" her out, she told the podcast host, but she ultimately decided to keep the phrase in the song. "I feel so relieved to be able to poke fun at something so horrible that happened to me and make light of it and something that I did at one point that Im not proud of," the singer said on the show. "I was like, this feels so fucking good to get out."Rapp also said that she was worried about the impact of the lyrics, telling Cooper, "And then months later I was like, Oh my god, what if it isnt received in the right way? I dont know if I want to put that much of my personal life out there. I don't know what I did.' Ultimately, what I always come back to is, no one knows every intimate detail of my life. This is how it should be. That is OK. I made something that I am really proud of."This isn't the first time Rapp addressed infidelity. When she was on comedian Ziwe Fumudoh's show in June, the Mean Girls star was directly asked if she had ever cheated and the pop star said yes. "It was fucked up, she said during the interview. "I was in a miserable relationship, which doesnt excuse cheating. Im not saying that. It doesnt excuse cheating. - YouTube She continued, "I got super drunk with one of my friends, and then I woke up the next morning, and was like, All right, I think its time to pack this one up.'" Rapp didn't share specifics on which relationship she was referring to her current one with Towa Bird or her ex, Carrington. But this conversation made its way to TikTok and X, where people shared their opinions about the content in Rapp's album. @maxxed_out_mac This isnt a critique on whether or not I think the album is good #reneerapp #biteme #cheater #toxicrelationship #toxicex "I think a lot of people are upset about Rene Rapp's album because she is the toxic ex, she is the person her fans want her to be writing about, when in fact she is that person," TikToker user @maxxed_out_mc said in a video that has over 266,000 views. "She is self-reflective and is very clearly is aware that she has these problems, and hopefully she's working on them. But I don't think her fans or people listening to the album know how to process that information because I think a lot of people listening to the album are the ones who have been hurt," and see their ex in Rapp. This analysis seems to encapsulate the anti-cheating discourse that is forming online. Some social media users have used the audio from the song with that one specific line and made videos side-eyeing the camera. @jessicafegeley EDIT: Guys please be kinder to each other in the comments. I simply dont like how the line and this sound is downplaying cheating and making it seem normalized. I have been a fan of hers for years. I just dont like how she keeps bringing cheating up and how she has spoken about it in interviews. That doesnt mean we should be fighting and talking about such serious topics in the comments and making assumptions about anyones life. I just think cheating is bad. Thats it. #reneerapp #biteme #newmusic #cheating #cheater @retireds1ut #reneerapp Others have made more analytical looks into the nature of Rapp's dating life. One TikTok creator, @TellTheBees, broke down his thoughts on the matter in a video that accumulated over 600,000 views in less than 24 hours. @tellthebeees Thank you to @shark bait for the timeline and @maxxed_out_mac for the moralizing point!! #americancheating #reneerapp #affair #cheating #towabird #tellthebeees #slocg Rapp's thoughts on cheating aren't the only juicy part of this interview with Cooper. She also addressed (well, as much as she could) her abrupt exit from the hit HBO Max series, Sex Lives of College Girls. For that and more, watch the full video on the Call Her Daddy YouTube page.
