Eight men have accused Christian rock star Michael Tait of sexual assault
Michael Tait is one of the biggest names in the history of Christian rock. Now, he's being accused of sexual assault by eight men.Tait, formerly a lead singer for the popular Christian bands DC Talk and Newsboys, was previously accused by six men of sexual assault. Now, two more have added their accusations, according to a new report in The Guardian.Jason Jones, the founding manager of the band Evanescence, told The Guardian that he was fired from the band after he spoke about his alleged encounter with Tait.Jones met Tait in the 90s, and the musician helped him and Evanescence get meetings with record labels, producers, and venue owners. During this time, Jones alleges that Tait would take him out drinking and smoking marijuana and confessed that he was "living a double life as a closeted gay man."He alleges that in 1998, he was drinking at Tait's house when he felt tired and was told to go sleep in Tait's bedroom. He then says he woke up some time later with Tait performing oral sex on him."I said no and pushed him off, but then, somehow, I passed out again. I woke back up, and he was still doing it. I said no again, then nodded out," Jones told The Guardian. "And then I woke up a third time, aggressively shouted, 'no!' and pushed him harder. It was then that he left me alone."He says he believes Tait drugged him.Evanescence co-founder Ben Moody said he recalls Jones telling him about a sexual encounter with Tait, but that he thought it was consensual. He also denied that Jones was fired for speaking out against Tait."I was a kid, only 18, and clearly didn't realize what he was going through," Moody said. "I'm sure I missed a lot of things Id recognize today. I didnt realize he was traumatized."Another man, Randall Crawford, alleged that in 2000, he went over to his friend Tait's house after a bad breakup. There, he says he had one shot of alcohol and "blacked out shortly after I took that one drink."He says he remembers waking up with his pants around his ankles and his legs in the air with Tait licking his anus.Tait has been a superstar in the conservative Christian world since the late 80s with bands like DC Talk, Newsboys, and Tait. In 2004, he and fellow DC Talk member TobyMac worked with Christian Nationalist organization WallBuilders to publish the book Under God.Tait's song with Newsboys, "God's Not Dead," has become an anthem for the Christian Right and is featured in several evangelical and Christian Nationalist films of the same name.More recently, Tait has endorsed and supported Donald Trump in his campaigns for president. In June, Christian news site The Roys Report dropped a bombshell story alleging that Tait had been accused of sexual assault, grooming, and substance abuse dating back to 2004, when he was performing as a solo artist. The story featured allegations from three men who said they individually met Tait in 2004, 2010, and 2014. Two of them stated that they woke up to Tait "fondling their genitals" after drinking with him. The third said he was given a back massage while skinny dipping with Tait and that Tait allegedly "non-consensually massaged his anal region" while the two shared a king-size bed.See on InstagramOn June 10, Tait published a statement on his Instagram titled, "My Confession." In it, he admitted that the "recent reports of my reckless and destructive behavior, including drug and alcohol abuse and sexual activity, are sadly, largely true."In the statement, he said he "might dispute certain details" in the accusations, but admitted to touching "men in an unwanted sensual way" and said he does not dispute the "substance" of the allegations. The statement also said that in January 2025, when he stepped down from being frontman of the band Newsboys after 15 years, it was "to get help." Tait says he spent six weeks at a treatment center in Utah and has been clean and sober since. On June 13, The Guardian published a story featuring three other men who allege Tait sexually assaulted them, as well as four more who said he "engaged in inappropriate behavior such as unwanted touching and sexual advances."Two of the men in The Guardian's report alleged that Tait had drugged them before assaulting them. One accuser, Shawn Davis, alleges that he was a minor when he met Tait, who quickly took him under his wing and introduced him to drugs and drinking. He asserts that when he was 17, he was drugged by Tait and said that he "woke up in the closet, and [Tait] had my pants down, and he was giving me a blowjob."Another accuser, known as "Adam" in the report, shared a similar story that involved "waking up in his bed, my pants unzipped, and [Tait] was jerking me off."A third accuser, Isaral Anthem, says he was 13 when Tait allegedly exposed his penis to him in a restaurant bathroom and Tait began "rubbing his penis, and making eye contact."Tait has yet to comment on the new accusations.
