Julia Garner had to convince Madonna she could dance to play the pop star in a biopic
The Material Girl is still getting her movie after all!Julia Garner, the breakout star of Netflix's Ozark who's joined the MCU in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, it shared an update on the Madonna biopic she's set to star in.There have been reports that the biopic, which will be directed by Madonna herself, has been canceled. However, Garner says the film is "supposed to still happen" and that "anything that's great takes a long time," per Variety.Garner, who won three Emmys for her role as Ruth Langmore on the Netflix show Ozark, was a guest on the SmartLess podcast with hosts Will Arnett, Sean Hayes, and Jason Bateman when she provided an update for the long-gestating Madonna biopic.She admitted that she "grew up listening" to Madonna and is "such a fan" of the singer.She also gave some insights into the auditioning process, revealing that Madonna was a big part of it.Garner said she heard about the project and went out to audition, but felt a little out of her depth."I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it, because I wasnt a trained dancer," Garner revealed. "And I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing. And sing with her!"To hype herself up, she got in the mindset of the Queen of Pop.She said before the audition, she asked herself, '"OK, what would Madonna do?' Which is convince you that she deserves, you know, to be in this room, and I owned it. I was kind of like, 'You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, if I leave, then thats on you.'"The project has been in development since 2020 at Universal. In 2023, it was announced that the biopic was put on indefinite hold due to the singer's career-spanning world tour. Garner is clarifying that the project is still happening, and fans couldn't be more excited.
