Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri's new movie has a sapphic twist
Julia Roberts's next film, the academic thriller After the Hunt, features heart-pounding drama, ever-heightening stakes, and a sapphic twist. After the Hunt comes from director Luca Guadagnino, known for his provocative and twisty films like Call Me by Your Name, Challengers, and Queer. It follows Julia Roberts as Alma Olsson, a well-respected Ivy League professor who takes a young student named Maggie (Ayo Edebiri) under her wing. When the student accuses Olsson's colleague, Hank Gibson (Andrew Garfield), of sexual assault, Olsson must deal with her own beliefs, morals, and past. The trailer introduces viewers to Alma, Maggie, and Hank at a house party, where professors and students are debating which generation is more sensitive. Some time later, things turn ugly when Maggie shows up at Alma's house and says that Hank walked her home the previous night and "crossed the line."The trailer makes it clear that Alma and Hank's relationship may have blurred the lines between friendship and romance, but it also hints that Alma and Maggie's relationship may be similar."You tend to choose people because they worship you, not because of any actual merit on their part," Alma's husband, played by Michael Stuhlbarg, tells her."Maggie is brilliant," Alma argues."Is she? Or does she just think you're brilliant?" he counters. The trailer features several close-up shots of Maggie's hands embracing Alma, and the sapphic drama reaches its climax when Alma tells Maggie, "I know you have feelings for me."After the Hunt promises to have plenty of twists and turns, and like most of Guadagnino's films, it's guaranteed to be highly erotic. Now, fans know that those erotic twists might include a relationship between Alma and Maggie! In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Garfield described the film as "a very serious, grown-up drama" that is "still very, very playful.""Luca is a very playful director," he said. "Luca's like pure imagination and freedom. His creativity is this free, radical, sublime thing."After the Hunt opens in select theaters on October 10 and everywhere on October 17.Watch the trailer below.
