'Superwoke' Superman smashes box-office records, despite conservative complaints
A "superwoke" Superman movie is leaping over box office records in a single bound! The new film from Warner Bros. and DC Studios has flown to an estimated $122 million at the North American box office over the weekend, making it the number one movie in the United States and Canada.Superman, starring David Corenswet in the titular role, has also earned $95 million overseas, bringing its total earnings to $217 million for its opening weekend, and making it one of the biggest film openings of the year. It's also one of only three films in 2025 to debut with more than $100 million in domestic ticket sales, according to USA Today. Its box office success comes despite conservative backlash to the film, calling it "woke" and complaining that it pushes a political agenda on viewers.Conservatives dubbed the new film, "Superwoke," after writer/director James Gunn said that Superman is an immigrant and the film tells that story."We don't go to the movie theater to be lectured to and to have someone throw their ideology onto us," Fox News commentator Kellyanne Conway said."Changing beloved characters, I dont think, is a great idea. I think if you wanna create a new character, go ahead and do that, but for me, Superman has always stood for truth, justice, and the American way," former TV Superman actor Dean Cain told TMZ. "And the American way is immigrant-friendly tremendously immigrant-friendly, but there are rules."Still, leaning into Superman's story as an immigrant (and a gay allegory) hasn't hurt the film's numbers. The flick had a bigger opening weekend than the character's last solo film, Man of Steel, which earned $116 million in its opening weekend, Entertainment Weekly reports. Its weekend box office is also greater than the total lifetime gross of six recent DC films, Blue Beetle, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Wonder Woman 1984, The Suicide Squad, and Birds of Prey.Superman's estimated budget was $225 million, meaning it's on track to earn its money back. This isn't the first time Superman has been accused of "going woke." When 2013's Man of Steel came out, The Advocate editor Jase Peeples argued that "more than any Superman movie before, Man of Steel presents Kent as an outsider, struggling to find his place in a society where he does not see himself reflected. It's a predicament not unfamiliar to many in the LGBT community -- especially those who grew up in an era before gay characters were commonplace in media, when others like us could be discovered faster than a speeding bullet through the internet."In 2021, Jon Kent, the superpowered son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane who took up his father's crime-fighting mantle, came out as bisexual. Superman was officially queer.Going back to his origin as a hero created by two Jewish immigrants, Jerry Siegel and Joel Shuster, Superman has always represented marginalized and oppressed communities. The new Superman film is just the latest iteration to understand that.Superman is currently playing in theaters.
