Tyler Perry's sexual assault suit: Everything to know
Media mogul Tyler Perry is at the center of controversy after he was accused of sexual assault by one of the actors on his show The Oval. The actor, Derek Dixon, filed a $260 million lawsuit against Perry in Los Angeles Superior Court last month, and the more Dixon speaks out, the larger the story becomes. He recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about why he felt it was time to do so.But Perry isn't the only one facing claims of sexual assault. The senior vice president of scripted programming at Tyler Perry Studios, Mark E. Swinton, was accused of grooming and rape by actor Braxton Wells in a series of videos uploaded to Instagram. In his videos, he says that Perry knew about the assault and is complicit in helping cover it up.Dixon and Wells are not the first to accuse Perry of inappropriate behavior. In 2023, an actor named Christian Keyes, who worked on multiple projects for Perry, including Diary of a Mad Black Woman, alleged that he was the victim of sexual harassment at the hands of a "Black Hollywood billionaire" in an Instagram Live. The billionaire behind beloved IP has been in the public's good graces for decades, but things are on shaky ground after Dixon, an out gay man, tells his story. On June 13, the actor, who has appeared in more than 80 episodes of Perry's BET show The Oval, sued the influential billionaire for sexual harassment, sexual assault, and coercion. "Everyone deserves to go to work and do their job without their boss trying to have sex with them, Dixon tells the Reporter.In his lawsuit, he alleges that the media mogul made several unwanted advances toward him, "including one in which the producer pinned him against a wall and groped him and another in which Perry snuck into his bed," according to the Reporter.
