Pitt interrupted."Oh, he wishes!" Padman added.Shepard teased, "That's hopefully where it ends!""You know, I've never had a gay experience," Pitt said. "I kind of missed that window. But if I did, it wouldn't be you."Shepard, who was laughing, reacted: "Oh man, you had me. I was like, 'Wow, he's going to say it.'"Pitt replied, "[You'd be] maybe 14th, or 15th.""I don't want to brag, but you're going to need to build up to me," Shepard quipped. "I do recommend you start with some starters."Brad Pitt's journey to sobriety. The men circled back to the actual question that Shepard was trying to ask: If Pitt had any issues talking about A.A. and identifying himself as a recovering alcoholic."No, not at all. Quite at ease," Pitt responded. "We can say, 'men's group,' right?"Shepard said, "I say A.A. You're not supposed to, but I say it."Pitt agreed, "I said that on some New York Times interview, and what an amazing thing this experience was for me. It was a men's groupwhen I first was getting sober. I just thought it was just incredible men sharing their experiences."According to Pitt, however, he "got admonished by someone of the higher-ups, saying, 'It's anonymous.'"A younger Brad Pitt and his brother were called homophobic slurs. When asked, Pitt talked about having two siblings a younger brother and younger sister. According to the actor, his brother is now very successful in all of his endeavors. When they were both growing up, however, Pitt recalled that his brother "was wild."Shepard asked, "Did you ever have to beat anyone up to save your brother?""No. In fact, I remember he got in fights before I did," Pitt replied. "I remember getting in a fight and I grabbed a guy in the balls."Shepard and Padman laughed at the story. Pitt added, "It worked. "Desperation!""I wonder why it worked, though," Shepard wondered. "Was it because it hurt so bad, or because everyone was such a homophobe back then?"Padman asked, "Was that happening then? Was there a lot of calling you a 'wuss,' and 'don't be gay'?""Yeah," Pitt said. "'Don't cry.' 'Don't be gay.' 'You fag.' That kind of stuff. A lot of that.""That was that errorthat era, but error."Listen to Brad Pitt's full interview on the Armchair Expert podcast below.
