A queer 'Anne of Green Gables' retelling hopes to help LGBTQ+ youth
Dan in Green GablesA new reimagining of Anne of Green Gables hopes to make the world a little better for LGBTQ+ young people. The graphic novel Dan in Green Gables, from author Rey Terciero and illustrator Claudia Aguirre follows 15-year-old Dan Stewart-lvarez after he finds himself abandoned by his mother in rural Tennessee with his grandparents, whom he had never met before. Dan must chart a new life working the farm and starting high school within a conservative religious community. The original Anne of Green Gables was written in 1908 by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery and its story of an orphan girl who helps run the farm of estranged family members has remained a children's classic ever since. The story resonated with Terciero, who wanted to adapt it for a new generation (and political climate)."Right now, it feels like our whole world is falling apart," Terciero says. "Books are getting banned, my Brown people are being rounded up by ICE, my trans friends are scared to travel because of gender identity fraud bills trying to be passed in places like Texas, where I was born. It's so gross and so terrifying, especially for our LGBTQ+ community.""As a writer of literature for young readers, I've made it my life's mission to create stories full of diverse characters, messages of compassion and kindness, and encouragement to maintain hope in the darkest of times," he continues. "As a boy, Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables kept me company in a lonely time of my life and taught me that sometimes we have to build the home we want to find for ourselves. So I wrote Dan in Green Gables as a love letter, not only to the stubborn red-headed orphan Anne Shirley, but to my dad's religious family who rejected me as a boy on account of my queerness. Yes, the world feels like it is falling apart. But through stories, I'm hoping to instill the next generationand maybe my own peerswith a little love, to let them know they are not alone, and they too can help to build a better world and a better home."Order Dan in Green Gables today from Penguin Random House.
